The search engine giant has sent out press invites to a mystery Android event in New York.
The invite states âThe playground is openâ, and following recent speculation, many are expecting to see Google showcase a new Nexus smartphone.
As well as a Nexus handset, reports claim that HTC has been working on a Nexus 5 phablet and Sony and Samsung have Google-branded devices in the works. There is also talk of a 32GB version of the Google Nexus 7 tablet and a 10-inch Nexus 10. So we think itâs safe to say weâll be seeing a few devices making an appearance at the event.
Being an âAndroidâ event, it is highly likely that Google will bring us news on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates. Itâs unlikely that weâll see 5.0 Key Lime Pie at the event, being so soon after the release of the Nexus 7, which introduced 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Whatever happens, you can find out in real time by watching the live stream at YouTube.com/Android. The event takes place at 10am ET (3pm UK time).

It seems like every week a new stat comes out that highlights mobile's unstoppable global momentum.
Last week we learnt that the world has six billion mobile phone subscriptions, while this week a study by Strategy Analytics says that the total number of smartphone users worldwide hassurpassed one billion - 1.038 billion, to be exact.
The report says the milestone figure was reached in Q3 of 2012, which is a huge leap from the figure of 0.7 at the end of Q3 2011.
Although it 19 years to hit one billion smartphone users (the first was launched in 1993), Strategy Analytics believes the number of smartphone owners will reach two billion by 2015 - that's some serious growth, but not particularly surprising when you consider emerging markets like India, China and Africa.

Apple has lost an appeal against a ruling that Samsung did not copy the iPad.
The UK High Court has upheld its decision that Samsung Galaxy Tab does not infringe the iPad's design.
In July, Samsung won its case against Apple over the design of the Galaxy Tab 10, with the judge ruling that it was ânot as coolâ as the iPad and ordering that Apple must publicly admit Samsung did nothing wrong.
Apple appealed the verdict, and the ruling was postponed in late July, but it is now expected to be put in effect quickly. Reuters has reported that the Court of Appealâs Judge Kitchin said today the notices must be in a font size no smaller than Ariel 14.
The appeal was dismissed Lord Justice Longmore, Lord Justice Kitchin and Sir Robin Jacob.
Sir Robin said: "Because this case (and parallel cases in other countries) has generated much publicity, it will avoid confusion to say what this case is about and not about.
"It is not about whether Samsung copied Apple's iPad. Infringement of a registered design does not involve any question of whether there was copying: the issue is simply whether the accused design is too close to the registered design according to the tests laid down in the law. So this case is all about, and only about, Apple's registered design and the Samsung products."
Samsung provided the following statement:
"We welcome the courtâs judgment, which reaffirmed our position that our GALAXY Tab products do not infringe Appleâs registered design right. We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners and that the origins of Appleâs registered design features can be found in numerous examples of prior art. Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims in other countries based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited."
Apple has not yet commented.

Starting with fMSX-Android 3.6.2, I have fixed the virtual keyboard display in the accelerated mode and enabled video acceleration by default. As it takes less time to update the screen, the number of drawn frames has been increased to 65%, so the emulation should feel much smoother now. You can get the latest fMSX-Android here:
Free version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d=com.fms.fmsx
Ad-free version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ms.fmsx.deluxe
If you are an existing fMSX-Android user, you will have to uninstall and then reinstall fMSX in order for the new default settings to take effect. Or you can set them manually in Settings. If you are having any performance problems with the new fMSX, please do not hesitate reporting them to me. Always mention what hardware you are running fMSX on.
Quote:
ALL CHANGES:
* Switched to using video acceleration by default.
* Increased the number of frames drawn by default.
* Now showing button labels and keyboard with video acceleration enabled.
* No longer deleting buttons layout on each upgrade.
* Added fast navigation with sections to the file selector.
* Improved the file selector UI look and feel.

Grab yourself some good old gory vehicular combat today on iOS - Carmageddon is out for Apple devices and it's free - for now.
Developer Stainless Games is offering the 1997 PC classic at no cost for its launch day only (just a few hours left, so don't hang about), after which it'll cost $1.99.Carmageddon, for those who don't remember it, earned itself a reputation for being one of the most graphically violent and gory games of its time (pedestrian liquidation, anyone?) - and was censored in numerous countries including, temporarily at least - the UK.
The iOS version has the obvious control adjustments to work on a touch screen device, iCloud support, YouTube video uploads, Game Center and is already optimised for the iPhone 5's 4-inch Retina screen.
Later ports to PlayStation, N64 and other formats were poorly received. But hey, it's on your phone and it's free-ninety-nine. Can't complain.

What appears to be a 32GB Nexus 7 has already been spotted in Japan, and now a screenshot reveals that the slate has been listed on Staples' business-centric storefront. Staples Advantage pegs the tablet at $248.37, placing it on par with the current 16GB model. If a Nexus 7 with beefed-up storage and a price tag similar to the one above does materialize, Google could put one of the current models on the chopping block to maintain its two SKU offering. The retailer also lists an October 18th availability date, but we're not holding our breath for such a quick reveal.

When we first laid eyes on the MG, it was an ambitious effort that hoped to bring Android 4.0-powered gaming to the casual masses through the hit-and-miss world of crowd funding. Though its Kickstarter efforts were a bust, its creators have managed to get this project off of the ground and are now accepting discounted pre-orders at $150 until November 4th -- after that, the price will climb to a full $170. All pre-orders are expected to ship during the second week of November. As a refresher, the MG features a 4-inch WVGA display, a 1GHz Cortex A5 processor, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and an 8GB microSD card. It'll also accommodate up to 64GB cards, should you ever hit a wall. Sporting a design that's reminiscent of the Tapwave Zodiac, the MG will ship pre-loaded with several "freemium" titles and will have access to Google Play's massive library of games. So, if you're looking to wean your younger sibling off of your high-end smartphone, the MG could be the stocking stuffer that gets the job done this holiday season.

If the iPhone 5 is proving tough to find, that's likely because it's proven tough to make, as well. A Foxconn executive told the Wall Street Journal that Apple's latest smartphone has been difficult for the manufacturing company to produce
"The iPhone 5 is the most difficult device that Foxconn has ever assembled," the executive said. "To make it light and thin, the design is very complicated. It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day."
This is not the first time iPhone 5 manufacturing difficulties have come up. The phone's aluminum casing has proven susceptible to scratches, and tightened manufacturing standards sparked fights between factory workers and quality control inspectors. Those skirmishes were followed by a strike that briefly brought production to a halt earlier this month.

Google's seven-inch slate obliterates the competition. Except for iPad, obviously.
It's only been on sale for three months, but Google's Nexus 7 is already the all-time best-selling Android tablet in the UK.
The data comes from Carphone Warehouse, who says that while the tablet falls some way behind Apple's iPad, no other Android slate comes close.
Talking to The Telegraph, Carphone Warehouse's Graham Stapleton said: "Itâs impressive that this product is our biggest selling Android tablet, and it will be really interesting to see if other manufacturers will follow suit with smaller tablets over the coming months to spice up the Christmas period.â
It will be interesting, especially with the new Amazon Kindle Fire and Fire HD about to hit the UK.
Google originally said it hoped to sell three million Nexus tablets by the end of 2012. At the moment, estimates are closer to eight million.
Stapleton continued: âLooking at the sales of the Google Nexus tablet, itâs clear that there is a massive demand amongst our customer base for smaller tablets.
âWeâre seeing a real shift in what customers are using their tablets for, with more and more watching content on the go. Itâs now common to see people using their tablets during the morning commute or catching up on the dayâs news in a local coffee shop, and smaller devices make it easier to handle.â

Tearing down a device the size of an iPod nano is definitely not for the faint of heart (or shaky of hand), but none of that deters iFixit, who just tackled Apple's latest pint-sized player. We called it the best nanoso far, but if the tiny iPod with newfound Nike+ functionality calls it quits, can you do something about it yourself, or will it need to be binned or go back to the repair depot? iFixit is torn on the device, saying that it's easy to take apart and replace the LCD or digitizer glass, but that the battery is glued solidly to the chassis, and other important parts like the Lightning connector are soldered together. That makes the replacement of those components nigh-on impossible, resulting in a repairability score of 5/10 for the device -- not that we'd be brave enough to crack it open ourselves.

We already know what some of you are thinking, but that doesn't change the reality on the ground: Apple has been granted a design claim patent for a "portable display device" that looks a whole lot like theoriginal iPad. Filed just a day before the big reveal in 2010, it's both specific to the tablet and cites additional references dating as far back as the early 1990s. The claim likewise includes elements that transpired between the filing and the granted date, such as a certain legal squabble that carries on to this day. While we can't say we're enthusiastic for what might follow from the patent becoming official -- we know Samsung isn't, despite victories in the tablet space -- it does give Apple one more tool for arguing that its total iPad design is unique, not just the individual components.

The FBIâs Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is warning Android phone users of malware that targets Googleâs mobile operating system.
The IC3 said that the latest versions of the malware are âLoozfonâ and âFinFisherâ.
Different variants of Loozfon are used by criminals to steal information.
âOne version is a work-at-home opportunity that promises a profitable payday just for sending out email,â explains IC3. âA link within these advertisements leads to a website that is designed to push Loozfon on the user's device. The malicious application steals contact details from the userâs address book and the infected device's phone number.â
FinFisher is a type of spyware which is capable of taking over components of a mobile device.
âWhen installed the mobile device can be remotely controlled and monitored no matter where the target is located. FinFisher can be easily transmitted to a Smartphone when the user visits a specific web link or opens a text message masquerading as a system update,â said IC3.
IC3 has provided a list of safety tips to help protect your smartphone. These include using encryption, looking at reviews of developers before downloading their apps, and making sure you do not connect your device to unknown wireless networks.

Social funding site Kickstarter has got a lot of shit on it. I mean, a huge amount. Want to back a pop-up book about vampire sex? Great, $100 please.
How about a special sticker that will turn your iPhone 3D? All the project needs is $15,000.
But then there are the genuinely cool projects; like the Pebble watch, and the Ouya console, and now the iMpulse game controller.
An increasing number of people think the future of gaming lies with tablets and mobiles, and the creators of iMpulse are no different, but they do have a problem.
The creators said: "Physical controllers give us a level of tactile response and immersive experience that is completely lost on touchscreen⊠your fingers are just in the way and if they're not sliding off the control surfaces they're getting in the way of the action."
So, they decided to create the world's smallest, wireless Bluetooth controller for smartphones and tablets.
As well as working with the vast majority of titles right out of the box, the iMpulse supports emulators too, which is a nice touch.
The controller has backlit buttons, connects to a key chain (the device is also a key finder) and has a camera remote too.
The iMpulse has already reached its target of $49,999 and at time of writing sits at $77,111, but if you want to get onboard, there's still another 18 days to go.
This is a great idea. A lot of potential mobile gamers are put off by the inadequacies of touchscreen devices, so this could bring a lot more people out from the cold. It's simple. practical and at $30 not outrageously expensive. If another $30 means you'll spend more time playing games on your $500 device, then it's got to be worth it.
Find out more at the iMpulse Kickstarter page or watch the video below.
