News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/04/02/w...nd-the-iphone/
This is a post I promised myself I would do, a long time ago. The main reason I haven’t posted about this yet is that I don’t myself own any Apple product, so I’m in an awkward position to talk about this…
If you’re a Wagic player, you’ve probably been wondering if there was any plan to release Wagic on platforms outside of the PSP. The answer is, of course, yes. Wagic already runs perfectly on several platforms (Maemo, PSP, Linux, Windows), and we are trying very hard to get it ported to as many platforms as possible. But the truth is, we’re lacking manpower to maintain all the ports.
A little while ago, Xaw Otihs, who already ported Wagic to the Maemo platform, shared a video showing extremely good progress on the iOS platform.
If you’re into card games, you probably already know about freeware games such as Forge, Incantus, MagMa… These games all have pros and cons (Forge recently reached a number of cards higher than Wagic… but wait for our next release guys, the competition is not over yet ), but Wagic is the only one designed for portable devices. If you’ve been hoping for a Card Game on your iPhone, Wagic is likely to be the thing you’ve been looking for. The thing is: the port exists (and it’s been in our public svn for a little while now), but we now need devs to improve it so that it goes into a more acceptable state: easier to compile, easier to configure, easier to distribute, better interface for touch devices, etc…
If you’re an iOS dev and are interested in this project, we would love to hear about you. Don’t send me an email personally, as I’ve been really busy lately, but rather, please follow our “procedure” for joining the Team: provide a few patches for the game, on the forums, and we will review them. If they’re good enough, we’ll gladly give you submission rights in our SVN . More info here
(and to clarify one thing, we’re talking of the Cydia side of the force here…we don’t expect Wagic to be distributed on non-jailbroken devices anytime soon )

A pirated version of an Android app is actually a Trojan that shames someone who installs it by sending an SMS message to all his/her contacts telling them of his/her piracy. The original app is called Walk and Text, and costs $2.10 in the Android Market. The app uses the camera on the back of a smartphone to show a user a visual of his upcoming surroundings, which will supposedly prevent the user from running into the street or across a set of train tracks. The pirated version is available from unofficial Android app markets, and once installed redirects the pirate to the legitimate app in the Android Market, while also sending the SMS message to the phone's entire contact list."http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/04/...es-Freeloaders

Google has begun to censure companies over unauthorised changes to the Android operating system, as well as the formation of partnerships without the company's involvement.
According to a Bloomberg report companies will now need prior approval from Google's Andy Rubin in order to gain early access to software updates.
The changes in the working relationship were described by major hardware partners such as LG, Toshiba, Samsung, and Facebook - which is working on its own device. Bloomberg's sources suggest that some companies have already made legal attempts to prevent Google's interference.
Although Android remains open source, and therefore free to use by any company, the advance access to features and updates is now being used as a means to bring major partners into line. Especially given Android's now 31 per cent share of the market.
Google's move is apparently due to concern that its market is beginning to fragment, with some hardware manufacturer's continuing to use outdated versions of the operating system - creating compatiblitily issues for developers and confusion amongst customers.
As a result Google has begun to insert "non-fragmentation clauses" into its contracts, ensuring that it has the final word on how the operating system is used and customised - as well as any additional partnerships between companies.
Smaller firms complain that Google is purposefully delaying the release of new code to the public, making it harder for them to compete.
"The premise of a true open software platform may be where Android started, but it's not where Android is going," Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop is quoted as saying.

Rovio's breakthrough franchise shows little sign of slowing
The latest edition of Angry Birds has soared past ten million downloads just ten days after its release, the game’s developer has claimed.
Rovio said Angry Birds Rio had been “breaking all records” in a message released on the firm’s Twitter account.
Rio is the fastest-selling Angry Birds edition yet, the figures suggest, showing that the mobile market’s lust for the franchise hasn’t dulled.
The title is available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Yet the game isn’t available on Google’s own Android Market, after Amazon scored an exclusive deal to distribute the Android game on its own App Store.
Currently the game is first place on the App Store paid chart, rising above all apps including non-game programs.
Angry Birds Rio ties into a new animated movie, Rio, which is set for release later this month.
In March Rovio, based in Finland, had secured a $42 million investment from several VC firms. The company went on to reveal plans to float on the stock market.

"International Business Times reports that when manufacturers trotted out their Android tablet prototypes during the CES show two months ago, pundits were happy to toll the death knell for the Apple's iPad, but now manufacturers are discovering that simply making a good tablet does not guarantee that it will sell — much to the chagrin of Motorola and its Xoom product. Now it is plain for all to see that Apple's secret weapon is their network of dedicated Apple stores worldwide where dedicated sales people are not only able to better explain its tablet to consumers but Apple also captures more margin than competitors who have to share margin with retail partners. Apparently, we are not going to see a repeat of the Android ambush of the smartphone market where the combined, price, savvy marketing, and modulated supply releases of the iPhone created so much aspirational demand in the market that buyers simply surged at the chance to buy what was perceived to be an equivalent product at lower prices. 'Motorola's Xoom is only the first to face these problems,' writes AA Defensor. 'Soon RIM's Playbook, and HP's TouchPad will hit the shelves and unless they can do something drastic over the short term, it might remain to be an iPad market. But not because they did not build a good product.'"http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...he-Tablet-Wars

Epic co-founders Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein have said not to expect a version of the iOS title Infinity Blade on Android systems yet, as the platform doesn't offer enough consistency to guarantee performance.
Speaking in an interview with Gizmodo, Rein and Sweeney spoke about the need for the infamously hands-off Google to exert more control over their platform to make sure that consistency becomes reality. Currently, Google allows mobile networks and handset distributors almost free-reign with the open source Android platform, leading to some performance disparity.
"When a consumer gets the phone and they wanna play a game that uses our technology, it's got to be a consistent experience, and we can't guarantee that [on Android]. That's what held us off of Android," said Rein.
"If you took the underlying NGP hardware and shipped Android on it, you'd find far far less performance on Android. Let's say you took an NGP phone and made four versions of it. Each one would give you a different amount of memory and performance based on the crap [networks] put on their phone.
"Google needs to be a little more evil. They need to be far more controlling."
Google's most recent iteration of Android, known as Honeycomb, has been held back from release to mobile companies in an attempt to maintain quality standards, remaining tablet only for the time being.
UE3 development for Android is very much a reality, however, as Rein made clear in a quote toGamesIndusty.biz.
"With respect to the engine we have been licensing Unreal Engine 3 on Android for several months now," Rein clarified.
"In fact Dungeon Defenders, from Trendy Entertainment, was the first game certified by Google on 'Honeycomb' and comes pre-installed on the Motorola Xoom tablet. It's been available on the Android market place for several months and it's a great game. Monster Madness, from Southpeak, is also available on the Android market place for mobile phone and tablet. "
Dungeon Defenders is also a prime example of another problem affecting the Android marketplace: a 50mb limit on app size. Any excess on that limit has to be downloaded separately, on the developers bandwidth, with a 'stub' program sitting on the marketplace itself.
As Rein points out, developers who are already paying fees to appear on the marketplace are not keen on funding bandwidth costs to see those programs downloaded, especially when app size greatly exceeds that limit. Infinity Blade, for example, currently weighs in as a download of around 850mb.
Getting round that extra cost is possible - and Trendy Entertainment has done just that by shipping Dungeon Defenders as a pre-installed app - but it's hardly practical for the majority. Google is doubtless working on this, Rein points out, but it's a definite indication of the platform's relative immaturity.
Last year, Epic subsidiary Chair Entertainment brought Unreal Engine to iOS users in the shape of visually stunning action RPG Infinity Blade. Not only has the title been a commercial success on that platform, it's also operated as something of a shop window for the technology on iOS devices.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz in March, Chair's CEO and CTO, Donald and Geremy Mustard, discussed how Apple was becoming more switched on to gaming as a major part of its business model, a relatively recent change in policy..

"An iPad is just another TV set, and can be viewed just like an extra outlet. These are the words Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) has thrown toward content providers as demand for consumer viewing keeps shifting to more available sources like Roku, Apple TV, and the iPad, over providers like Netflix, and Hulu, and now Cable TV. Programmers are throwing down the gauntlet as more devices are able to stream video from a variety of providers."http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...Another-TV-Set

Our good friends over at PreCentral have just received a couple of juicy scoops, even for this time of the day. According to their proven tipster, what we're looking at here is an upcoming webOS phone sans keyboard -- a first for Rubinstein's crew, as many of you might already know. While there's not much detail to go with this pic, it appears that this here slate's just slightly bigger than the Pre 3, and that the little spot above the screen could be either a front-facing camera or merely a proximity sensor. Following PreCentral's logic, this could very well be the Stingray that showed up in the list of codenamesback in November -- the similarly sized Pre 3 is Mantaray, whereas the smaller Veer is Broadway, leaving Stingray and Windsor unclaimed. But of course, we wouldn't place our bets just yet.
Speaking of the Pre 3, the same tipster also sent in a spyshot of said phone connected to Verizon. While we already know that this slider packs both CDMA and GSM radios, this is actually the first prototype seen running on the former. Alas, the mysterious tipster is again keeping a tight lip about this leak. Picture after the break.

Ah, would you look at that. Earlier this year there were rumors about Apple ditching the physical home button on upcoming iOS devices, and now we have what appears to be a new iPod touch prototype matching such description, courtesy of CrunchGear via Mr. Blurrycam. According to its About screen, this "DVT-1" (a late milestone) device packs 128GB of memory -- twice as much as the largest available capacity option right now (remember that 64GB iPhone 4 prototype in Hong Kong?) -- as well as a model number "MC550LL" which isn't far off from those of the fourth-gen iPod touches ("MC54xLL"), though this similarity doesn't help prove its authenticity nor indicate whether it'll make it to the market. Still, if Apple does go ahead with this grubby device or at least its capacitive home button, we might see new touch or gesture controls for the bezel area below the screen ŕ la webOS, as suggested by an earlierpatent. But hey, let's not take this too seriously for now -- all this could turn out to be just a much belatedApril Fools' prank, right?

The latest reports out of Asia - though some are already attempting to debunk it - suggest that the iPhone 5 (mock image above) will make a late June 2011 entry into the marketplace, even though Apple may still unveil the device earlier in the month at the company's Worldwide Developer's Conference, which begins June 6th in San Francisco.
Korean news site ETNews.co.kr reveals today that Apple will roll out the fifth generation iPhone during the 4th week of June. Information surrounding the release comes as Korean providers SK Telecom and KT are believed to be among the first who will receive and carry the iPhone 5 upon its debut.
As always, any unconfirmed reports regarding the iPhone 5 - or any Apple product for that matter - must be taken with a grain of salt. Still, it is worth noting that a series of recent stories and like-minded reports indicate that earlier suspicions of a fall 2011 iPhone 5 release may be inaccurate. If the latest report out of Asia is correct, it means Apple...

Spark Trophies 1.85 has been released today; mainly to fix the avatar issue brought forward by PSN’s April 1st update. Please note that if you haven’t already, you will need to accept the latest PSN Terms of Service, before you can use Spark Trophies – not doing so will result in authentication errors.
This release also speeds up the app somewhat, by fixing a handful of bugs that resulted in unnecessary re-authentication.

The Unreal Development Kit (UDK) will eventually appear for Google's Android operating system, according to new comments made by Epic Games vice president Mark Rein.
Speaking to website Gamasutra he stated that, "We've been supporting [Android] for quite a while, and we've been providing [Unreal Engine 3] in source code format to our licensees."
"UDK is a totally different story," explained Rein."It'd be difficult for anybody right now to make a game with UDK and ship it on Android, because Unreal is for making high-end, high-quality-content games, and most of them are pretty large, because you can make a large game with it."
Rein reiterated that the biggest issues for Android support is that software's 50MB limited for apps, which makes Unreal Engine 3 developed games difficult.
As a result Rein has already come out in support of Google's recent crackdown on Android customisation and fragmentation.
"UDK will come eventually to Android, and Google is going to solve that problem - we know they're working on it, but we don't know the release date and we don't know when it will get into the hands of all the different vendors with all the different phones," said Rein.
The UDK was originally created for iOS platforms, with the Epic-published Infinity Blade proving a technological milestone for games on Apple formats. However it is not yet available for rival smartphone operating system Android.
Yesterday Rein confirmed that the game would not be released on the platform because of a lack of consistency in the operating system.

Following a flurry of recent activity in the market, with acquisitions of both Spawn Labs and Impulse - as well a move into Facebook retail - US specialist GameStop has claimed that it could set itself up as a manufacturer of tablet devices in order to ensure the platform has a compelling environment for games.
Speaking to Gamasutra, company president Tony Bartel hailed the portable devices as the "next explosion" to hit the video games sector, noting the retailer's commitment to be a player there.
"If we can work with our partners and the OEMs and they come up with a great tablet that is enabled with a great gaming experience and coupled with a bluetooth controller, then there's no need to go out and develop our own," he said. "But if we can't find one that's great for gaming, then we will create our own."
The retailer, which is the biggest specialist brand in the US market, has embarked on a series of initiatives in order to ready itself for a future in which boxed product sales take less of a share, and digital sales more.
As well as finding a foothold in cloud gaming and digital distribution, setting itself up as a competitor to the likes of OnLive and Steam, any moves into the hardware space will increase the list of rivals to include other significant players such as Apple and Samsung.
Since the announcement of the Spawn and Impulse acquisitions, GameStop stock has risen by nearly 6 per cent to close yesterday at $23.90.

You still can't play them with an iCade cabinet just yet -- though that's coming, in June -- but Atari has now delivered quite a present to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. The company has just released its Greatest Hits collection for iOS devices, which includes 18 classic arcade games and 82 Atari 2600 games -- those available either in 25 separate packs for $0.99 apiece, or in one massive time sink bundle for $14.99 (Pong comes free with the app itself). As you can see, you'll also get things like the original box art and arcade cabinets for each game, and some of the titles will even let you play head-to-head with a friend over Bluetooth. Ready to get started? You know where to find it.

It's been one week since Google pulled the PSX4Droid emulator from the Android Market without warning, and today its lead developer has decided to take a stand -- ZodTTD's made a new version of the app free of charge, and is hosting it at his personal website as a downloadable APK. He now claims that not only did Google pull his app, the company has frozen his developer accounts, effectively restricting his ability to publish to (and profit from) the Android Market until this gets sorted out. We can't confirm his story at this point -- and we hear things may not be quite as cut-and-dried as he claims -- but we can tell you that if you happen to have a legally-obtained PlayStation BIOS and ROMs sitting around, you're only a few clicks away from being able to use them on your Android phone. Not a bad deal, eh?

The Guardian's Games blog reports on a survey from Google's Admob, which found that more people use tablets for gaming than for any other purpose, even viewing news or email. Quoting:"According to the survey (PDF), 84% of tablet owners play games, ahead of even searching for information (78%), emailing (74%) and reading the news (61%). 56% of tablet owners use social networking services on their device, while 51% consume music and/or videos, and 46% read ebooks. ... The survey found that 38% of respondents spend more than two hours a day using their tablets, while another 30% spend 1-2 hours. It appears that tablets are predominantly domestic devices, with 82% of people primarily using their tablets at home, versus 11% who say they are used primarily on the go, and 7% who said at work. 28% of respondents say their tablet is now their primary computer, while 43% say they spend more time using their tablet than they do their desktop or laptop computer."http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...se-For-Tablets

With over 300,000 devices activated per day, Android's clearly firing on all cylinders from a consumer standpoint, but much like the famed Cheez-It wheel, some would argue that the OS isn't quite mature enough for unabashed enterprise use. Being a corporation itself, El Goog's obviously been toiling around the clock to change that, and it's taking three major strides today. An updated version of its Google Apps Device Policy enables employees to secure a lost or stolen Android 2.2+ device by locating it on a map, ringing the device, and resetting the device PIN or password remotely via the new My Devices website. Furthermore, Apps admins now have an option in the control panel to "Encrypt Data on Device," which will now include requiring encrypted storage on Android 3.0 tablets. Finally, Google Apps Lookup is acting as a type of internal blackbook, allowing users to easily sift through colleagues and contact them through one form or another. So... hired?

Panasonic has been kicking around the idea of a tricked-out Android-based in-flight entertainment system for awhile, and now it's ready for airlines to start retrofitting their livery. The system, dubbed eX3, runs Android, relieving restless fliers with news, live television, games, and what the company calls on-board social networking, but that's mostly a nod to the Facebook app. Other amenities include broadband internet access and GSM service, touchscreen controllers, capacative screens, proximity sensors, and, in some cases, 3D displays. Not going to front -- we're stoked on the idea of tuning out on-board babies via multi-hour Angry Birds sessions, but we're seriously hoping the airlines ignore one of the system's marquee features: in-flight video conferencing.

[sparkfun] announced a new board called the IOIO (pronounced “yo-yo”) this week that allows communication from your Android devices to your upcoming projects.
The board hasn’t been released yet; [sparkfun] is still pulling together documentation and waiting on their first production run. We do know that the board contains a PIC24F MCU, and will give your phone analog input, and Digital I/O, PWM, I2C, SPI, and UART control. Communication with the board is over the USB port on your phone.
The brilliant thing about this board is that an external programmer isn’t required. Everything you connect to this board can be controlled from within Android apps. We covered Android development in a hackaday tutorial series before, so now it’s possible to put these skills to give your projects a touch screen, internet and bluetooth connections, a camera, or your phone’s accelerometers. Very slick.
Video of some basic functions demonstrating what possible with this board after the jump, but feel free to comment and tell us what you’d like to see done with this board.

Playing video games is the number one use for tablets such as the iPad, with 84 per cent of owners using it for the purpose - compared to 78 per cent for "searching for information" and 74 per cent for emailing.
The data comes from a new Google survey, which puts "reading the news" as the fourth most common activity at 61 per cent, followed by accessing a social network (56%), music and videos (51%), e-books (46%), shopping (42%), and other (19%).
The survey was conducted by Google's AdMob subsidiary and polled results from 1400 tablets owners in the US.
Other data included in the full report shows that 43 per cent of respondents spend more time on their tablet than with their desktop or laptop PC. A third also spend more time than watching television.
A total of 68 per cent of respondents spend at least an hour a day using their tablet, with 82 per cent primarily using it at home - mostly at weekends and in the evening.
Over three quarters admitted that their use of desktop or laptop PCs had decreased since obtaining a laptop, with 28 per cent describing the tablet as their primary computer.

James Laird has reverse engineered the Airport Express private key and published an open source AirPort Express emulator. 'My girlfriend moved house, and her Airport Express no longer made it with her wireless access point. I figured it'd be easy to find an ApEx emulator — there are several open source apps out there to play to them. However, I was disappointed to find that Apple used a public-key crypto scheme, and there's a private key hiding inside the ApEx. So I took it apart (I still have scars from opening the glued case!), dumped the ROM, and reverse engineered the keys out of it.http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...te-Key-Exposed

Lest you thought HP's Windows 7 slate was for large businesses and its upcoming webOS ones were reserved for consumers, not so fast. In a video (embedded after the break for your viewing pleasure), HP touts Citrix running on its forthcoming Touchpad to show it can play nice with enterprises' IT departments, too. As with Chrome OS, Citrix Receiver runs inside the browser, letting people choose the desktop apps they want. Both platforms, it seems, are capable of running computer-aided design applications in the cloud, with HP showing a 3D model in AutoCAD. The frame rate isn't as fluid as HP would have you believe, but getting started appears idiot-proof, thanks to some large, tap-able icons. In any case, with 80 percent of the Fortune 100 already deploying the iPad, it's wise of HP to woo corporate customers with webOS. Isn't that right, Microsoft?

On Monday, the world learned that Apple's iPhone 4 is about to make a major splash in one of the world's largest and most rapidly expanding mobile phone communities on the planet - the nation of India. According to the Wall Street Journal, two prominent telecommunication service providers in India say the iPhone 4 will be introduced on their networks "in the coming months."
The news comes just as mobile telecom companies in India begin rolling out third-generation services. The new Indian iPhone 4 carriers include Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Aircel Ltd., although neither is presently commenting on the anticipated costs that will be associated with iPhone 4 ownership and usage in India.
Second only to China with regard to the world's largest market for telecom services, India presently has more than 790 million mobile phone subscribers, many of whom are eager to get their hands on the iPhone 4. Bharti, which sells earlier models of the... [Read More]

New Android handset with stunning specifications
Taiwanese smartphone giant HTC has unveiled the firm's latest large-screen 4.3" Android smartphone, the HTC Sensation.
HTC pioneered the large 4.3-inch screen format device and has met with success with handsets such as the HD series, pre dating Android with Windows Mobile, through to the HD7 for Windows Phone 7 and a number of Android handsets including the Desire HD.
The new HTC Sensation boasts top shelf specifications with quad-band 3G, 1.2GHz dual-core ARM CPU, 8 megapixel auto focus camera capable of recording 1080p HD video and Bluetooth 3.0. The phone also features a forward facing camera for video calls.
The Sensation also boosts screen resolution to 960 x 540 which is the first time Android smartphones have made the move beyond the 800 x 480 standard and actually matches the height resolution of the iPhone 4's Retina display although it's 80 pixels short on width.
Some of the features HTC boast for the Sensation include a new instant capture camera, free of the usual delays associated with phone cameras.
Moving beyond an amvalently regarded front end customisatio, it's now a highly polished feature laden software enhancement with a raft of cloud sync features and media sharing functionality.
The new Sense shipping with the Sensation also features an improved features a customised lock screen which can launch directly into applications.
Vodafone will have exclusive wraps on the Sensation when it first launches in mid-May, thereafter being more widely available on other carriers.
It's not known exactly how much the Sensation will cost but Vodafone have taken to offering other high end smartphones such as the Samsung-made Nexus S for 'free' with 24-month Ł35 contracts.
It's likely the Sensation will also be available for 'free' but it may match the carrier's iPhone offering and require a Ł45 monthly contract or else require a payment from Ł89 to Ł139 up front for a lower level contact.

HMV has launched a free Android and iOS app which allows customers to check how much their video games are worth in credit when traded in at an HMV store.
The re/play app was developed for the retailer by MoPowered. Users can enter game details manually or scan a barcode to check the latest potential trade-in prices. The app also details in-store offers and gives directions to the nearest local branch. Under the re/play scheme, games can be traded in for store credit, money off purchases or cash rebates.
"We're incredibly proud and excited to be the-first-to-UK-market with a games trade-in app for iPhone and Android," said HMV's re/play manager Martin Baxter. "This ground-breaking app will not only become a must-have download for current trade-in users, but will encourage a whole new range of customers who may have previously lacked the confidence or awareness to trade their games in.
"Whether users choose the manual search option or the equally simple barcode scanner, they will be given an instant trade-in value for their games and consoles before being directed to their nearest HMV. Our re/play app will not only reduce current store transaction times, but will enable customers to quickly select new games and other products they wish to trade-in against, safe in the knowledge of how much they have to spend.
"By launching this innovative new service HMV will further improve its customer experience, boost its mobile credentials and maintain its status as a credible destination specialist for games and other entertainment content."
Earlier this month HMV announced that it was lowering profit expectations for the financial year - the company's fifth profit warning in a year.

NaturalMotion's American football iPhone game hits sales milestone
NaturalMotion's American football title Backbreaker has now seen five million downloads on the iOs platforms.
The news comes in the immediate wake of the Oxfordshire-based animation technology outfit's announcement that Backbreaker is to see a sequel on XBLA named Backbreaker Vengeance.
NaturalMotion, which has proved a technology company can make a huge success out of releasing its own games whilst still expanding its tools' functionality and uptake, released the original Backbreaker on both iOS and Xbox 360.
The company's solutions, which include the ever-popular Morpheme and Euphoria, remain prominent tools across the industry.

A traditional summer release for the next iteration of the iPhone is very unlikely, according to a new report.
A source at the Taiwan-based plant responsible for manufacturing the smartphone's touch panel toldDigitimes that Apple had not yet given them a production roadmap.
Apparently suppliers are reluctant to make the switch to a new model with demand still so high for the iPhone 4.
If this is the case, Apple would struggle to get a new device out in time for a June launch – which is when both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS arrived in stores.
A Business Insider report earlier this week claimed that production on the new model is due to start in September, suggesting the new phone won't hit the shelves until Christmas at the earliest.

We knew it was coming, and today at MIX 11, Microsoft showed off its developer platform for the next version of Windows Phone, which developers will be able to get their hands on for free in May. The new application platform adds:
- Multitasking for background processing, audio and file transfer, and fast app switching, including background audio playback for HTML5 webpages
- Deeper integration of apps into the OS, allowing programs to leverage Live Tiles, including push notifications via Live Agents running in the background
- Raw access to the camera and sensors (gyro and compass) via the Motion Sensor library, letting apps to control device hardware
Microsoft hopes this will allow developers to make even more creative and engaging apps. To get our juices flowing, it showed off demos of new app concepts from Skype, Spotify, Layar, Qantas, AmazonShopping, and Kik Messenger. Check out our gallery below and hit the break for the details.

Open up Android Market on your Android device today and (most of) you will see a familiar set of three headings -- Apps, Games and My apps -- bidding you welcome. Do the same on your Sony EricssonAndroid phone, however, and the last item in that list might no longer be there. That's because SE has decided to introduce its own "channel" to the Market, wherein you'll find a load of Xperia handset-specific junk software and other specially curated bits that your smartphone is adjudged to be in need of. The change means you'll need to open up your menu to get at your own apps, but that shouldn't be an entirely unfamiliar activity for Android users. Sony Ericsson may be the first manufacturer to pull this switcheroo, but it's following in the well-worn footsteps of Verizon and T-Mobile in the US. And speaking of carriers, Sony Ericsson says this change is operator-dependent, so if you're nice and lucky, your operator won't bother to roll this out. Sadly, our Xperia Arc has already been infected.

You don't have to be a coder to appreciate the wonders that a software development kit can contain, especially when there's a nice emulator tucked in there to give an early taste of things to come. That's exactly what can be found within the webOS 3.0 SDK, and that SDK is exactly what's been leaked to the world, giving anyone who wants it the ability to play with the OS that'll make the HP TouchPad tick.PreCentral.net took the emulator within for a heck of a test drive, providing a lengthy textual overview of everything from keyboards to calendars, along with the video that's embedded below. Sure, clicking and dragging in an early emulator isn't nearly as much fun as tapping and swiping on some beautiful hardware, but it sure does cut down on the smudgy fingerprints. It's cheaper, too.

Sega may have axed the fan-made remake of Streets of Rage 2 recently, but redemption comes in the form of the original classic arriving on iOS for iPhone.
Similar to Sega's many other iPhone ports, it uses on-screen controls that are large enough to actually work pretty well. It also dons wireless multiplayer via Bluetooth, although you'll need 3rd generation iPhone & iPod touch and 3.x OS or better.

In what we think is a cool added extra, it also comes with original Japanese version of the game, titled Bare Knuckle 2, included. To access it you just have to change your phone's language to Japanese (but don't forget how to change it back).

Sega put a stop to a fan-made remake of Streets of Rage 2 that had been eight years in the making because it said it needed to "to protect our intellectual property rights".

InfoWorld's Neil McAllister test-drives Flash Player 10.2 for Android 3.0 and finds its shortcomings too sweeping to be chalked up to beta status. 'The worst part is the player's inconsistent behavior. This gets really frustrating when there's lots of HTML and Flash content mixed on a Web page. The UI turns into a tug-of-war between the browser and the Flash Player, where each touch produces varying effects, seemingly at random,' McAllister writes. 'As far as I could tell, there was one thing and one thing only that the Flash Player for Android 3.0 accomplished successfully. On the stock Android browser, Flash content is invisible, so you don't notice Flash-based advertising. With the Flash Player installed, however, all those ads suddenly appear where once there were none, their animated graphics leaping and scuttling under your fingertips like cockroaches on a dinner tray — some achievement.'"http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...ils-To-Impress

April 15th, 2011, 00:13 Posted By: wraggster
Candella Software has defended its controversial video game Alien Jihad to Eurogamer this afternoon.
Alien Jihad was announced for PC, iOS devices, Android and home consoles this morning.
The premise? A peaceful Earth - where Palestinians and Israelis "party together"; Saudi Arabia booms with mini-skirts; the US, Iran and North Korea create the Axis of Peace; Afghanistan is named the world's safest place; Somalia's economy swells largest; France welcomes back Roma travellers; British MPs decide not to "fiddle" expenses and "rip off" tax payers - is invaded by Aliens from Virginopolis, who flaunt destructive Fatwa technology. "Greedy" Wall Street bankers are turned into alien clones.
"Dick Puffin", leader of "the British Nazi Party", announces that, "We are the aborigines of this land." Former Australian Prime Minister Mr. Howard declares that, "We must invite these aliens to a cricket match. And after they lose, we must do to them what we did to the aborigines."
"Wise geriatric" Italian PM, "Saint Silvio", comments (while receiving "an oil massage from his new underage girlfriend") that, "Our culture is far superior to theirs. It's much better to love bunga bunga girls than these aliens." And "great American rabble rouser Fat Buchanan" broadcasts that, "These aliens pose a clear and present danger to our superior Anglo-Saxon culture."
"It is time for the video games industry to tackle mature subjects affecting millions of people's lives."
Ajith Ram, creative director of Alien Jihad
Alien Jihad gameplay is described as an arcade shooter similar to ancient PC game Star Wars: Rebel Assault. Earned trophies include Greedy Banker, Infidel, Foreclosure King, Bailout Champion, Day of Rage, Tea Party.
Is Alien Jihad for real?
"Yes, it is real," answered Ajith Ram, creative director.
"Naming and connotations are deliberate. The game tries to highlight some of the major political, social and religious issues in the news every day.
"Alien Jihad is a co-production between three small indie developers and all of us believe that it is time for the video games industry to tackle mature subjects affecting millions of people's lives."
Mature subjects, Ram continued, such as "the demonisation of entire Muslim communities due to the violent actions of a minority"; the "rise" of right-wing politics in Europe and the US in reaction to the "perceived" Islamic threat; the classification of some minorities including Roma travellers as "aliens"; the global recession; and the ongoing revolutions spreading throughout the Middle-East that will have "a massive impact on world affairs for decades to come".
"For an industry that pretends to be the art form of the 21st century, games have a strange reluctance to deal with hot topical issues in any form," alleged Ram, "whether the approach to these subjects is humorous or not.
"None of the other art forms have this problem; whether movies, music, art or comics, they have all reflected the topical issues of the day for decades."
Ram used examples such as Bob Dylan singing for peace during the Vietnam War.
"Rarely were they criticised for discussing the burning issue of the day or being unpatriotic," he said. "But when a games studio makes Six Days in Fallujah, all hell breaks loose."
"Surely as the exponents of a new art form, games designers (and publishers) can do better than Italian plumbers, space marines, ninjas and cute animals?"
Ajith Ram, creative director of Alien Jihad
Ram pulls comics into his argument: Judge Dredd depicted hostile post-Third World War world, Ram explained, and the Tom Clancy novels of the 1990s had Palestinian terrorists stealing nuclear bombs to blow up Denver with.
"We even had the usually pussyfooting and politically correct Hollywood portraying a similar story in James Cameron's True Lies," argued Ram. "Quite recently, we had movies like The Infidel (starring Omid Djalili) and Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen) taking a more comedic approach to Jewish-Muslim issues."
"So why is it," asked Ram, "that the games industry, which now claims to be bigger than box-office Hollywood, has such an enduring problem with global politics? Surely as the exponents of a new art form, games designers (and publishers) can do better than Italian plumbers, space marines, ninjas and cute animals?"
When quizzed about the more personal attacks on "Dick Puffin" - leader of "the British Nazi Party" - clearly a parody of British National Party leader Nick Griffin - Ram countered: "Dick Puffin is a fictional character in the game and not related to anyone. Mr. Griffin's attitudes are also well known."
As for the caricature of Silvio Berlusconi, the British MP expenses scandal and the Middle-East tensions: "All of these were - and some still are - topical issues," answered Ram. "They are quite well covered by the media and there is no reason why a video game should not highlight them as well."
Complex political arguments aside, won't brazenly naming a game Alien Jihad rile Apple and endanger the game's App Store release?
"It remains to be seen," shrugged Ram. "It will not be a problem on the PC which has no censors.
"On other platforms, if the stakeholders have a problem with the title of the game, we'll try renaming it. That's a bridge to cross when we get there."
The "home console" release is more hazy. "[No platforms] that we can specifically mention today," said Ram. "We certainly hope to see the game on consoles in the future."

If you're hankering to be riding the very latest mobile software from Apple, hit up your iTunes, for version 4.3.2 of iOS is now available for downloadin' and updatin'. Fixes for occasional "blank or frozen" FaceTime video and iPad 3G issues get top billing, while the obligatory security updates fill out the rest. The size of this mighty software drop? A hefty 666.2MB.
Update: Well, someone's skipping class today. A tethered jailbreak is already in the wilds, if you dare. Thanks, Jeff!
Update 2: Looks like Verizon customers are getting a slightly different update of their own: iOS 4.2.7. It promises only "bug fixes and security updates."

The Ion iCade, our favorite April Fools' joke turned actual product, has just passed through the FCC and moved one step closer to retail reality. The arcade cabinet for your iPad had all its Bluetoothy bits laid bare and even brought along its user manual, in case you're the type who bothers to read those sordid things. There aren't too many surprises here except, perhaps, the inclusion of an Ikea-esque hex key -- some assembly required. With the green light from the feds, though, that means the iCade is right on schedule for its May 31st release. If you want to ensure you nab one of the first batch, you can pre-order it now for $99 from either GameStop or ThinkGeek. And, while you wait for the blissful marriage of Atari's Greatest Hits and Bluetooth joystick, you can peep the pics in the gallery after the break.

Given Apple's track record of adopting newfangled technologies -- you know, like SD slots -- we're going to go ahead and assume Steve Jobs & Co. aren't planning on adding a 3D display to the iPad anytime soon. Now that you've swallowed that distasteful dose of reality, NewSight Japan is inviting you to mod it yourself in a way thankfully doesn't involve performing open-heart surgery on your magical slate. The solution -- whose name we can't decipher on the company's Japanese website -- combines software with a film placed over the display (not to worry, this won't impede mulltitouch gestures). Unfortunately, it doesn't flip 2D images to 3D, so those operating sans a 3D-enabled camera or conversion software are apt to be sorely disappointed. That said, it'd fit right into a utopian universe where 3D movie downloads were the norm.

Millenial Media’s Mobile Mix report, published yesterday, has revealed that the iOS platform is making some progress in narrowing the gap in market share between it and Android, although Google's operating system is still far ahead.
48 per cent of all smartphones covered in the study were Android, compared to a 31 per cent share for Apple and 18 for RIM. Symbian and Windows phones accounted for 1 per cent each.
The figures were measured via the number of ad hits served on each platform - something which could tip the scales in Android's favour thanks to a higher density of free, add supported apps on the system.
In a reflection of that, the study also found that iOS devices account for 47 per cent of all generated revenue on smartphone, with Android trailing on 36 per cent. RIM machines account for just 7 per cent of revenues.
Earlier this year, Apple released the iPhone 4 onto US carrier Verizon, a market of up to seven millionnew customers after a period of exclusivity on the AT&T network.

[Matt] over at Make came up with a way to send push alerts to his iPhone whenever his mailbox is opened.
The electronics are just a switch mounted to the mailbox connected to an Arduino with an ethernet shield, but the interesting part of the build is the code. [Matt] got the Arduino WebClient to request a PHP script sitting on a server. This script connects to the Prowl API to push the notification onto an iPhone.
[Matt]‘s project has been up for a few months now, and we still haven’t seen any projects using an Arduino+Push combo, or really any other phone except for the iPhone. We think this could be done on an Android phone with cloud to device messaging, but that can’t be the only solution. Any hackaday readers have an idea of how to implement this outside the iOS world? What would Hackaday readers do with a microcontroller that can send push alerts to your phone?

The traditional home console business is quickly losing revenue share to the smartphone market, according to a new report from mobile analyst firm Flurry.
The report is based only on publicly available data and the company's own estimates, but appears to show that the revenues from smartphone and tablet games rose from 19 per cent of the U.S. portable game software market in 2009 (iOS only), to 34 per cent in 2010 (iOS and Android combined).
At the same time the market share for the Nintendo DS family of consoles fell from 70 per cent to 57 per cent, while the PSP dropped from 11 per cent to 9 per cent.
However, both portable consoles were nearing the end of their lifetime by 2010 - when their revenues might naturally be expected to fall. It is also unclear whether the smartphone revenues represent a true loss in market share on the part of consoles or simply an expansion of the whole category.
However, Flurry characterises Nintendo as, "struggling with its own burning platforming: Nintendo DS". The report is also adamant that smartphone revenues are increasing "at the expense of portable gaming".
Flurry's data for the video games market as a whole in the U.S. suggests that the smartphone and tablet market has risen from 5 per cent in 2009 to 8 per cent in 2010. This is estimated as an increase of $500 million to $800 million.
At the same time portable consoles have fallen from 24 per cent to 16 per cent, while home consoles have increased from 71 per cent to 76 per cent.
Since the report covers only publicly available data this does not include digital sales for any traditional console platform. It also does not include PC titles, although Flurry nevertheless estimates that smartphone and tablet revenues exceeded the estimated $700 million PC games market in 2010.
Although Flurry's data shows Apple's iOS having the high-end smartphone market essentially all to itself in 2009, the Android operating system is now dominant. Apple has closed the gap in recent months though, with the most recent data giving Android a 48 per cent market share, iOS 31 per cent, and RIM 18 per cent.

You know how ebooks are gradually taking over paper books as the most popular format for the consumption of the written word? Well, that's bad, mmkay? Publishers, librarians, and booksellers are losing their jobs and It's all entirely the iPad's fault. Forget the Kindle's millions of sales, the iPad did it. In a technophobic rant to rival all technophobic rants that have come before it, Illinois Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. accuses the iPad's popularity for the current level of unemployment in his nation, before proceeding to sculpt a rickety argument about how the First Amendment to the US Constitution is being exploited for the benefit of China. See his tirade on video after the break.

Rumor has it that HP is preparing to enter the cloud-based music storage fray. A reader at PreCentralsent in what purports to be a confidential PowerPoint presentation indicating the TouchPad will launch with an HP-branded music and movie store, as well as a smart syncing service that caches frequently accessed media for local playback. This may very well be the "Music Synergy" that SVP Steven McArthur mentioned to us. Amazon has already launched such an app and it's all but official that Google is planning the same thing, so it only makes sense that the company would want to imbue webOS with similar powers. We can't verify these claims ourselves and the slide above is clearly a wonky Photoshop job, but it's would hardly be surprising after snatching up Melodeo and the streaming music service Nutsie. And, while webOS and Android are working to banish the quaint ritual of plugging your cellphone into a computer, we can only imagine what the Lala team is up to -- maybe Jobs has them washing his turtlenecks.

Looks like somebody pulled the trigger on an order page for the mythical white iPhone 4 a little early over at Three UK. The phone that had previously been listed on the carrier's site for a long, long time (sans any ability to actually order it) has now sprouted up a page all its own with the magical option to "buy now." We managed to get all the way through to an order confirmation page, so if it's a mistake it's a very thoroughgoing one. Calling up Three's telephone ordering line and PR personnel brought us no closer to finding out the truth, but this particular order page was discovered via a tweet by a Three affiliate -- whose tweets have since gone private -- suggesting it was dug up from someone in the know. Our suspicion is that Apple's finally about ready to dish this phone up to the people and Three has been caught testing out its order page ahead of the inevitable onslaught of white iPhone orders. Hit the source link to see the premature revelation for yourself.

To date, we've heard scant few details about the next-generation iPhone, except for a rumor that it may or may not have a bigger screen, and that it almost certainly won't pack an NFC chip. Now, one analyst is reporting the design will remain unchanged, though its innards will get a slight boost. Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities (who has been dead-on in the past) talked with sources in Apple's supply chain to learn that the iPhone 5 will boast the same A5 processor as the iPad 2, along with an 8 megapixel rear camera, improved antenna design, and that Qualcomm baseband for both GSM and CDMA models we've seen bandied about (technically, theone in the current Verizon version is already GSM-capable). His sources also claim that Apple will begin mass production of its next-gen phone in September, which aligns with what we already heardabout Apple moving to a fall launch -- and because of the ongoing disaster in Japan, the company might not have sufficient supplies to launch a new iPod touch at the same time. Typically we take many Apple rumors with a grain of salt, but these tidbits all sound plausible. And given that Kuo has been right before, we're especially inclined to believe him -- even if the truth is more ho-hum than magical.

According to the research, findings, and a healthy dose of speculation from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo with Concord Securities, Apple's long-awaited iPhone 5 may ultimately delver only a few, less than groundbreaking improvements over the 4th generation Apple smartphone.
Based on what Apple's overseas supply partners tell him, the iPhone 5 will not bestow an all-new design or anything - at least from an aesthetic standpoint - that is radically different from the previous four generations of the device. Kuo says the newphone will deliver only "slight modifications" from the last generation. In other words, expect the same body and retina display you already have.
It should also be noted that almost everyone - Kuo included - has stopped alluding to Near Field Communication (NFC) technology as a possible new attribute of the iPhone 5. NFC would make mobile payments (transactions via smartphone at the point of sale) possible at participating retailers across the US.

Currently, the most popular camera used to upload pictures to Flickr is the NikonD90, a fine DSLR that costs over a thousand dollars. But in about a month or so, if trends continue, Apple’s iPhone 4 will take the lead as the most popular camera on Flickr. The Nikon D90 has been out for about three years now and has sold very well, but the iPhone 4, which has been out for under a year and is considerably less expensive, is about to take the top spot on Flickr.
It’s really not too surprising, however, as many people keep their iPhone’s with them most the time. A big, heavy, DSLR, may take much higher quality photos, but they can’t compete with the convenience of a smartphone. TheiPhone’s camera has progressively gotten better and better over the years. Now the images produced with the iPhone 4 are really quite good, especially for a camera with a microscopic lens.

Flash has been a thorn in Apple's side ever since the first iPhone shipped almost 4 years ago. While users have grown accustomed to their iOS devices not being able to display Flash content, it's unfortunate that Apple and Adobe have not been able to reach some sort of compromise before now.
Adobe, however, may have finally come up with a solution to the Flash dilemma once and for all with their latest version of Flash. At the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Las Vegas, Adobe recently previewed the latest version of Flash that incorporates HTTP live streaming. With this new version of Flash, iOS devices will finally be able to display Flash video without the need to install any additional software on their devices.
Over the years Apple has been steadfast in their opposition to approving Flash for the iOS. Continually citing concerns over Flash’s poor overall performance and being detrimental to battery life.

Woah! In the world of big-time lawsuits, this must be just about the biggest. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has sued Samsung Electronics for copying "the look and feel" of its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone. This relates to the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the iPhone 3G / 3GS models, and the slightly less obvious Epic 4G, Nexus S, and Galaxy Tab (presumably the older 7-inch model, since the newer ones aren't out yet) devices. The claim for intellectual property infringement is phrased as follows:"Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple's technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products."
The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of California on Friday and seeks injunctions against Samsung, damages (both actual and punitive), and a finding that the infringement was willful. Lest we forget, the rarest outcome in such legal tussles is for an actual judgment to actually be handed down, so the greatest likelihood is that this will just lead to another round of grudging handshakes and licensing going one way with money going the other way, but still, it's fun to see the big dogs barking at each other.
Another aspect to these proceedings that shouldn't be overlooked is that, on the software front, they boil down to iOS versus Android (again). When Apple calls Samsung uninventive in its user interface, it's talking more about Android's perceived imitation of the iPhone's interface than whatever TouchWiz tweaks Samsung has slapped on top. And hey, if you're going to sue Google indirectly, you can't leave a major player like Samsung outside the courtroom, it just wouldn't be fair.

Games which offer credit for downloading other apps could be barred
Apple is thought to be slamming the door on an incentive scheme where users are offered in-game credits for downloading other App Store games.
The App Store vendor is said to be removing “very high profile” games that promise in-game money as reward for downloading apps from other developers.
Apple has not publicly commented on the matter, though mobile games publicationPocketGamer.biz says “well-placed development sources” have confirmed that a ban is being initiated.
“Several games, some of them very high profile and previously available on the App Store, have now been rejected with the reason given that they offer virtual currency in exchange for other app downloads,” the publication said.
The publication suggested that, due to the frequency of the matter, Apple has likely making “wholesale changes” to the iOS ecosystem.
‘Download incentivisation’ is said to have become a key business opportunity to App Store developers, particularly those which struggle with the conundrum of monetising free-to-play games.
The process of in-game incentives usually involves a developer and mobile networking partner such as TapJoy or OpenFeint.
A game will draw attention to other games supported by a networking partner. “The vast majority of the freemium industry” use the model, PocketGamer.biz said.
Big Time Gangsta (developed by Glu Mobile) rewards users 61 credits for buying a $4.99 app called Cleopatra's Pyramid (developed by Game Duell).
Such credits, bought outright, would have normally cost $9.99.
It is unknown how, in this instance, both parties share the revenue gained.
Glu Mobile uses the App Store networking service Tapjoy, which previously claimed to have helped enticed 1.5 million additional downloads per day using the scheme.

A major bug in the Android DHCP implementation has forced network administrators to (effectively) ban the use of such devices on the Princeton campus. In the last few months, Princeton has had to kick more than 400 Android devices off the campus network for using IP addresses well beyond the allotted DHCP lease (to the detriment of other users), sending invalid DHCPREQUEST messages after lease expiration, and a variety of other wacky behaviors. The link provides a clearly documented explanation of the buggy behavior, as does this largely neglected bug report. Without doubt, this buggy behavior is affecting other, less vigilant networks, and disrupting Wi-Fi traffic for Android and non-Android devices alike."http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...Campus-Network

Information from mobile marketing data firm Flurry suggests that Apple might have made some changes to the algorithms which govern the chart positions on the iOS App Store.
The changes are thought to have been made fairly recently, and first evidenced themselves with the rise of the Facebook app to the top of the number one position in the free downloads chart, where previously it had sat in the upper teens.
Analysts at several mobile data and ad tracking firms believe that this could be the result of Apple re-weighting the factors which govern position, giving new importance to the amount of use which apps receive once installed.
Website Inside Mobile Apps posited the change when it noticed the sudden rise up the chart of the Facebook app, which sees less downloads than many others in the chart, but is used by millions of people every day. Apple has so far refused to comment on what changes it has made, if any.
"We've been noticing changes in the Top Free rankings for at least three days now," Flurry marketing VP Peter Farago told Inside Mobile Apps. "From our point of view, Apple is absolutely considering more than just downloads, which we believe is the right direction to go in to measure the true popularity of an app."
Up until now, many companies have been paying networks like Flurry for placed downloads within other Apps, giving games high visibility in the download-centric chart and generating further downloads in turn. If Apple's rating algorithms have changed then that may no longer be such an effective strategy.
Whilst that may result in a higher quality of app, as developers attempt to retain chart position through stickiness rather than downloads, it also makes that front page much harder to break into.
If the algorithms do place as much importance on usage as the reports suggest, then the 39.5 million estimated DAU for Facebook's app are going to be hard to shift from that top spot.
Should the rumours of the changes prove to be true, they may be welcomed by many developers, who have called for changes to the current system of promoting the most downloaded titles, which many feel is prioritising throwaway games over higher quality endeavours.

An iPhone version of eccentric iOS adventure Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP hits the App Store on Thursday.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP Micro will cost Ł1.79 and include all the same content as the original iPad game.
Those who already own the iPad version but now want to play on their iPhone are also being catered for. An update, also due to go live on Thursday, makes it a universal app playable across all compatible Apple touch screen devices.
"The S:S&S EP project began life on the smaller touchtronic machines so many of the key art and design decisions were made with this very particular form factor in mind," read a post on the game's website.
"While the size of the iPad is certainly a treat for S:S&S EP, the tiny machine is definitely 'the way it was meant to be' - it's an entire little world you can slip into your pocket at any time.
"In many many ways this is the most significant launch for the project and it is also something of a homecoming - so please help us make some noize!"
Developed by Critter Crunch/Clash of Heroes studio Capybara Games, the game originally launched on iPad last month, picking up a 7/10 from Eurogamer's John Teti.
"There's no doubt of the passion and heart that went into the creation of Sword & Sworcery. The artistry is extraordinary," he wrote. "The resulting art is not, not quite."

Apple could probably plaster most of its Cupertino campus with patents and patent applications if it wanted to, but we're guessing there's few that make it more happy than a design patent for a flagship device -- like the iPhone 4. That's now been granted a year after the company filed the application, which details the "ornamental design for an electronic device with graphical user interface" in words and pictures. What's more, Apple's now also finally snagged a design patent for the 2007 iPod touch, and it's picked up a few other patents related to iTunes, Apple TV, and one for a "touch screen RFID tag reader." Hit up the link below for a closer look at those.

Security researchers unveiled the scandalous discovery that Apple's iPhone and iPad are recording the user's geographic location to a secret file.
Revealing the discovery at the O'Reilly Where 2.0 Conference in Santa Clara, researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden said that iPhone and iPad have been "storing a long list of locations and time stamps" ever since the iOS 4 update.
"We're not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it's clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations," they wrote on the O'Reilly Radar blog.
The researchers also showed that the data file was "unencrypted and unprotected" and is transferred to any computer that has been synched with an iOS device. The file can be accessed on the iPhone or iPad.
Allen and Warden published an OS X application which, when run on a system that syncs with the iPhone or iPad, it will extract the hidden file from automatic backups and visualises the data on a map. The Mac iPhoneTracker application can be found here.
Thankfully the pair also pointed out that the file did not appear to be sent anywhere without the users knowledge. However Allen's phone was also shown to have stored "hundreds of thousands of wireless access points" which the phone had been in range of over the past year.
The astounding ramifications of the discovery include the fact that any lost or stolen iPad 3G or iPhone can reveal the entire movement patterns of the owner, so too a lost or stolen laptop which had synced to an iPad or iPhone.
A Guardian report suggested that Apple will be legally in the clear due to a section of Apple's massive iTunes terms and conditions which says: "Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device."
At the Where 2.0 conference, Allen and Warden speculating on why Apple might record the data, suggested it might be something to do with Apple's new Geofencing functionality.
"I love the company, I was just pretty sad to discover this was how they were handling my location data. It just bummed me out really," said Warden.

The second quarter financial results for Apple show revenues of $24.6 billion for the iPhone and iPad maker, with a staggering $5.99 billion in profits for the three months ended March 26th.
Revenues rose significantly from $13.5 billion at the same time last year, with a total of 59 per cent of all revenues coming from outside the U.S. Profits were up from $3.07 billion at the same time last year.
A total of 3.76 million Macs (up 28 per cent) were sold during the quarter, along with 18.6 million iPhones (up 113 per cent), 9.02 million iPods (down from previous results but ahead of internal estimates), and 4.69 million iPads (including the iPad 2).
Lifetime sales for all iOS devices are now put at 189 million, although speaking in the company's financial conference call CFO Peter Oppenheimer did not break the figure down by formats.
However, figures from a federal document used in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung mention lifetime sales of around 108 million iPhones, 60 million iPod touch, and 19 million iPads.
As well as breaking company record for its March quarter Apple also revealed that iTunes enjoyed its best quarter ever. The App Store now offers 350,000 apps and has paid out a total of $2 billion to iOS developers.
Oppenheimer also pointed out that the iPhone's 113 per cent year-on-year growth was well ahead of the 74 per cent growth of the smartphone market as a whole. Apple sales grew 155 per cent year-on-year in the U.S. following rollout on the Verizon network, with sales in greater China up almost 250 per cent.
"With quarterly revenue growth of 83 per cent and profit growth of 95 per cent, we're firing on all cylinders," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year."
"We are extremely pleased with our record March quarter revenue and earnings and cash flow from operations of over $6.2 billion," said Oppenheimer. "Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $23 billion."

Android Central has taken a close look at the new Transformer tablet from Asus, giving it an overall positive review, with minor points deducted for a 'plasticy' feel. The Transformer joins the Motorola Xoom in the world of Honeycomb (Android 3.0), and has very similar, high-end specs (though it's Wi-Fi only) with one big difference: the Transformer is marketed with a not-included-in-the-price attachable keyboard that adds a secondary battery. Notably, given inevitable comparison to the Xoom, the SD card slot, and Flash 10.2, work out of the box. The reviewer says Asus has done a credible job of making Honeycomb work well with a keyboard, but I wonder what other OSes will eventually be hacked onto this device. 16 hours of battery life in a netbook-sized computer sure sounds good to me, but I might want that to be with standard Linux apps instead of only with Android.

Less than a week after confirming that a flaw in Skype for Android could leak sensitive user information, the Internet calling company issued an urgent update to fix the problem. Skype informed customers that 'After a period of developing and testing we have released a new version of the Skype for Android application onto the Android Market, containing a fix to the vulnerability reported to us. Please update to this version [1.0.0.983] as soon as possible in order to help protect your information.' Humans, they just love mixing the old with the new. To wit, the iCade gaming cabinet for the iPad, anApril Fools' joke that was just a fun idea this time last year, has gone and turned very real, replete withFCC certification and now a pre-order page. The Bluetooth-communicating iPad enclosure seems to have originally been on sale for immediate delivery, but ThinkGeek has burned through its first shipment of units faster than you can say "Atari's Greatest Hits." The second batch of $100 iCades is expected by May 20th at the very latest, although orders are being taken only from the US for now. The rest of the world needn't despair, however -- we hear building one of your own is a pleasurable and rewarding experience.

doperative writes with this quote from a speculative piece at Business Insider about Apple's real motive behind its recent lawsuitagainst Samsung's Galaxy devices:
"Android is free. In some cases, it's even cheaper than free, with Google sharing some revenue from Google searches on Android phones with partners. This is hugely disruptive to both Microsoft and Apple's business models; Microsoft because they make money on software licenses, and Apple on hardware. And this disruptive approach is winning: Android is surging past iOS in marketshare. A lawsuit from a big company, even if doomed, still takes a lot of time, energy and money to fight off. So Samsung or someone else might settle, accepting to pay some form of license. If that happens, Apple can go around to the other manufacturers asking for the same license and have a much stronger claim. And now OEMs have to factor that cost into the decision to choose Android. And all of a sudden, Android has a price."Samsung has fired back with a lawsuit of its own.

See that up there? That could be your next iPhone -- or it could be a tear-shaped dream. It's a mock-up of what is said to be the iPhone 5, according to anonymous sources quoted by Joshua Topolsky. A continuation of the concepts laid out in our post-CES look at what's next for Apple, the design here is said to be thin, metal-backed, tapered, and sporting a 3.7-inch display with the same 960 x 640 resolution in the iPhone 4's retina display -- resulting in a slight drop from that phone's vaunted 326ppi density. The home button is quite obviously enlarged, possibly adding some thumbable gestures into the mix. Internals are said to include a "swipable" area, possibly meaning NFC, along with a Qualcomm Gobichipset with support for CDMA and GSM, so this could be the one phone to rule all the carriers. Or, it might wind up only ever having domain over a single .PSD file. To us, well, it looks a little too thin to be packing all that and a bag of antennas as suggested and, with all the weight at the top, we can see these things flying out of hands left and right. But, we're certainly willing to be surprised. Place your bets in comments below.
Update: The source has been updated with a note indicating that the bevel may be "a little exaggerated" in the above mock-up and that the back may not be metal after all.

The US Army is calling upon Android app developers to help make military life a little less stressful -- and, perhaps, a lot safer. Under a new Army framework known as the Mobile/Handheld Computing Environment (CE), third-party developers will be able to create and submit tactical Android apps, using the military's CE Product Developer's Kit. The framework, originally prototyped by the folks over at MITRE, represents the latest phase in the Army's ongoing campaign to incorporate smartphone technology on the battlefield. Any app operating under the CE system will be interoperable across all command systems, and, as you'd expect, will be tightly secured. The kit won't be released to developers until July, but the Army has already begun tinkering with its baseline suite of Mission Command apps, which includes tools designed to facilitate mapping, blue force tracking, and Tactical Ground Reporting. On the hardware side of the equation, the Army is planning to deploy a new handheld known as the Joint Battle Command-Platform, or JBC-P. The two-pound JBC-P is essentially a military-friendly smartphone designed to run on a variety of existing radio networks, while supporting the full suite of forthcoming apps. The JBC-P will be tested this October, and will likely be issued on a wider basis in 2013.

Minor update may also be called the iPhone 4S
The upcoming Apple iPhone 5 may arrive later than previously suggested with delayed production meaning the device may only appear in October or November.
Last week a Reuters report citing unnamed sources said the next-generation iPhone would ship during September however based on checks with component suppliers, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo issued a note suggesting production in August with an October or November release date.
According to Apple Insider, Kuo also claimed that the iPhone 5 would amount to a minor update, featuring the faster dual-core A5 processor from the iPad 2 and a higher resolution 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. A move to a different vendor of radio 'baseband' chip, namely Qualcomm, was also suggested along with an improved antenna design.
TheGadgets blog claimed that an Apple source said the phone would be called the iPhone 4S, rather than the iPhone 5, and will ship with a version of iOS 4 rather than iOS 5.

Imagine a world where Nokia's N-Gage is the mobile platform of choice -- there's no iOS, no Android, and Nintendo's 3D ventures ended mercifully with the Virtual Boy. It's a world where the Nckia NG belongs. In our universe, a knockoff of the stillborn Nokia 7700 doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense, even with a MicroSD slot and added buttons for dialing. And then there's the fact that the handset runs a JAVA OS that doesn't exactly offer a bounty of mobile gaming choices -- which was sort of the whole point of the N-Gage. As for other familiar features, we can't be sure that this will be the rebirth of side-talkin', but with what could be a speaker slot on the side, we've got our fingers crossed. No word on pricing, but if you're truly nostalgic for a time that never was, you can pick one up from Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen. Get a closer look after the break.

Dell boss Michael Dell said that while he was surprised by the success of tablet computers, business users turning to a range of platforms including PC, smartphones and tablets was a sign of continued industry growth.
Speaking in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dell added his voice to a number of analysts that have suggested that Android tablets will eventually surpass the Apple iPad.
The Dell boss pointed out that Android had very little market share just 18 months ago and added that he expected tablets to be no different.
Dell also moved to dispell the myth of Dell's focus on the comsumer PC business. "That's not really at all what Dell is today," he said, pointing out that one-third of the firm's profits were due to sales of PCs and the majority of that was not consumer business.
When asked about Dell's entry into cloud computing and how this would compete with offerings from firms like Rackspace and Amazon, the Dell chief said the firm's cloud offerings are aimed at larger commercial organisations.

Look, we all kinda, sorta know that Apple will finally admit it's springtime tomorrow and let the white iPhone 4 fly the nest. But in order to sell white iPhone 4s, you've got to ship them first, and one small Belgian retailer has just received its first batch of the mythical pale device and lined them up for some loving photography. Not only that, but they're even offering to sell you either the 16GB or 32GB over on their site (which, mind you, we can't vouch for!), though they can only ship within the Benelux region. One more pic after the break.

News via http://www.summeli.fi/?p=2314
For those of you who want a better experience on S^3, here’s a modified version of AntSnes that supports multitouch and has full set of on-screen buttons. Also runs much faster, close to 60 FPS w/out sound and usable with it. The audio might sound a bit glitchy at the moment, though, due to some optimizations.
This is completely un-official and Summeli can re-release this when he finds time through his proper channels and with the source, but at least here’s something to play with in the meantime.
Requirements: S^3 device with Qt 4.7.2 or 4.7.3 libraries installed

We're taking this with a grain of salt, since it applies only to users of the cross-platform Appcelerator Titanium development environment, but it appears that Windows Phone 7 is facing an increasinglyuphill battle for mobile mind-share. At this point it should go without saying that a platform lives and dies by its developers and, according to Appcelerator, they're growing less and less interested in creating apps for Microsoft's smartphone OS. Only 29-percent of devs responded to the company's quarterly survey that they were "very interested" in putting their wares on WP7, a fall of 7 points from last quarter and far less than market leaders Android and iOS. News is even worse for RIM, which saw a fall of 11-points in developer interest for BlackBerry, and now trails the folks from Redmond. Again, this survey is based only on the responses of 2,760 developers using a particular product, so we'd refrain from calling the results incontrovertible. Still, it reinforces something that even a casual observer could discern: BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 have a tough row to hoe. Two more charts after the break.

Long-awaited device to finally hit key territories including the UK, US; iPad 2 hits Japan
Having missed the launch of the iPhone 4 way back in June 2010, Apple has confirmed that the white version of the handset will at last go on sale in key territories tomorrow.
The launch is planned for a number of territories starting with the UK, US tomorrow. Countries to follow shortly after include Ireland, Germany, France, Australia, Spain, New Zealand, Denmark, China, Sweden, Canada, Austria, Belgium and Japan.
“The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful,” Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller stated. “We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.”
In addition, Apple has also confirmed that the iPad 2 will launch in Japan and other key Asian territories this week. It will hit China on May 6th.

Apple has finally given 'Unpleasant Horse' the thumbs up, and you can grab it now for free on the App Store.
Unpleasant Horse is the first game from PopCap's "experimental" new games label 4th & Battery, through which it promises to release some of its "more experimental ideas" from within the reams of game prototypes that would not usually see the light of day.

It has players taking control of a dark horse that leaps through the sky, grabbing onto 'pretty ponies'... and slamming them into a pit of spinning blades. Mwah ha ha.
That's about it. Basic but fun and pretty funny. Although Apple didn't seem to think so when I originally rejected the game earlier this month.

You're probably familiar with Microsoft's long running assault on Android but, as noticed by Groklaw, Barnes and Noble has fired backsaying, 'Microsoft has asserted patents that extend only to arbitrary, outmoded, or non-essential design features, but uses these patents to demand that every manufacturer of an Android-based mobile device take a license from Microsoft and pay exorbitant licensing fees or face protracted and expensive patent infringement litigation.' Barnes and Noble goes on to assert that Microsoft violates 'antitrust laws, threatens competition for mobile device operating systems and is further evidence of Microsoft's efforts to dominate and control Android and other open source operating systems.' The PDF of the filing from two days ago is rife with accusations including, 'Microsoft intends to utilize its patents to control the activities of and extract fees from the designers, developers, and manufacturers of devices, including tablets, eReaders, and other mobile devices, that employ the Android Operating System.' and 'Microsoft has falsely and without justification asserted that its patents somehow provide it with the right to prohibit device manufacturers from employing new versions of the Android Operating System, or third party software.' Barnes and Noble does not mince words when explaining Microsoft's FUD campaign to both the public and developers in its attempts to suppress Android. It's good to see PJ still digging through massive court briefs to bring us the details on IP court battles."http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/04/...s-Android-Suit

PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 racer Bang Bang Racing is being ported to Tegra-powered Android devices.
The chunky-looking title is being shrunk down via the magic of NVIDIA's advanced Tegra processor.
Tegra allows for whizzy graphics and lots more computational power. NVIDIA has dubbed it a "computer-on-a-chip".
Bang Bang Racing offers top-down racing and reminds us of a Micro Machines game, which is no bad thing.
Players control their vehicles by touch, drawing a path on the track for their flashy sports cars to follow.
Those lucky enough to have a Tegra-powered super phone or tablet can nab the title from the Tegra Zone app, a marketplace for games which support the NVIDIA chip.
Developer Playbox Games hopes Bang Bang Racing will launch early next week.

Three employees from Taiwan-based Foxconn Electronics' (Hon Hai Precision Industry's) plants in Shenzhen, China, have been charged with leaking the iPad 2's design to outside accessory companies in China, according to a Chinese-language sznews.com report. Several online shopping retailers in China were able to sell iPad 2 protective case products before the iPad 2 was even launched, leading Foxconn to suspect that there might have been some employees leaking the design of iPad 2, which it reported to the local policehttp://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...-iPad-2-Design

By now you've probably seen the latest spectacle to consume the white iPhone 4: it's thicker than the black model. The image above illustrates the point using a piece of lead from a mechanical pencil. So what, you say, in righteous indignation to a device that shipped ten months late. Well, the size difference creates a potential consumer issue since cases (at least the good ones) are manufactured against the tight tolerances supplied by Apple. We've confirmed ourselves, that an Incase slider that fits a black iPhone 4 just fine has to be forced into place on the new white model. Unfortunately, Apple's own spec page doesn't highlight the change in thickness (measured at 9.5mm by TiPb). Instead it still shows a 9.3mm depth with a tiny disclaimer stating, "Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process." The result is confusion -- will this case fit or won't it? -- which is never a good thing for consumers.
But why is the white iPhone 4 thicker? Phil Schiller mentioned that Apple needed to add extra UV protection among other tweaks, in an attempt to reduce the "unexpected interactions" between the white cover and the internal components. As such, Apple apparently needed to sacrifice some slimness for a better functioning white phone. In the end, we have what looks to be four different size / button configurations that must be considered when purchasing a shrink-wrapped case for your white iPhone 4, black iPhone 4, white Verizon iPhone 4, or black Verizon iPhone 4. Good luck with that.

GameStop is wasting little time expanding the scope of Spawn Labs, its newly minted "cloud gaming division." A recent job listing for the company seeks a senior software engineer to be "responsible for the development and maintenance of our Player software on Android tablets and smartphones." (Additional job postings are for key roles in the division, which is also looking to port the Spawn Player app to Linux-based systems.)
Upon announcing the acquisition of the game-streaming tech outfit late last month, GameStop laid out a clear goal: "Once the Spawn Labs integration and testing on a new consumer interface is complete, users will have immediate access to a wide selection of high-definition video games on demand on any internet-enabled device." Android phones and tablets (and Linux systems) would appear to be next on the checklist, but what about iOS devices?
"Getting the audio and video onto the iPhone or iPad is not too hard," Spawn Labs' David Wilson pointed out in the community forums (some months ago). "Getting game control in a way that works for console games is hard -- but only because Apple controls both the physical and Bluetooth interfaces to the device." In response to a followup question, he added, "Yes, Android is more within our control than the iPhone."
While Spawn Labs has operated as a sort of "Slingbox for gaming," with its Spawn HD-720box providing the technology to stream your game consoles' content to a computer, GameStop appears to be angling to cast a much wider net -- not just to stream your console games on more devices, but to sell you new games to stream on more devices. The retail giant has also scooped up a digital distribution platform in Impulse, which would seem just the thing to provide that "wide selection of high-definition video games on demand" -- just as soon as Spawns Labs' "new consumer interface is complete," of course. (Muahahahahaha!)

The iPad2 went on sale in several new countries today, the largest markets of which were in Asia. Hours ago, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and UAE joined the expanding list of nations to now boast iPad 2 availability.
Similar to the first wave of international launches one month ago, long lines (sometime 500 people or more) gathered at individual Apple stores awaiting the official kick-off of sales. Despite the rebuilding and recovery efforts still taking place in earthquake-ravaged Japan, the flagship Apple Store in Tokyo was described by some as a feeding frenzy, with consistent lines extending for blocks.
According to one report published earlier today by the Foreign Associated Press, 16-year-old mainland Chinese student Dandy Weng waited in line for over 12 hours in a torrential downpour outside the Apple Store in Hong Kong. "I haven't slept in 48 hours. I'm very tired but excited," he told AFP

App developer, FeiYingInfo today snuck through Monino, what is quite possibly the most blatant example of copyright infringement that you’re likely to see any time soon. Although Monino appears at first glance to be a genuine Nintendo game, featuring everyone’s favorite Italian plumber, it is in reality just a poor imitation of the beloved classic that we all grew up with as kids. Monino did, however, manage to reach number six on the list of top-selling paid apps in the App Store, before being pulled a few hours later. Not bad for a blatant rip-off with poor game play mechanics.
But really, who wouldn’t want to play Mario on their iPhone? Everyone except Nintendo, that’s who. The fact that this game was approved at all is almost as amazing as the game itself. Whoever was responsible for approving this app obviously hasn’t played a video game in the last twenty years.

If you’ve been sitting on the fence trying to decide whether or not to jailbreak your precious iDevice, Jay Freeman, better known as Saurik, has a few good reasons to take the plunge. Suarik who is the brains behind the unofficial app store Cydia, recently sat down with Robert Scoble at the Mobile Connections conference to discuss the merits of jailbreaking. The Q and A session also introduced us to the newest member of Jay’s team, Britta Gustafson, who is the “community manager and user experience person.”
Most of our readers here at ModMyi are well aware of the many good reasons to jailbreak their iOS devices. But, for some who are a little less familiar with the whole process of jailbreaking, Jay outlines a few of the benefits of leaving the confines of the official App Store.
