Android Market tracker AndroLib.com is currently showing 200,000 products in the portal. It also records over 103 new downloads per second.
It's a speedy rate of expansion, though still some way behind Apple's 3m apps total. AndroLib also shows 2.5 billion downloaded apps on Android, against Apple's 6.5bn.
These estimates suggest Android could take the downloads top spot by 2013.
Of course, there are many arguments against this. Android is still a messy and fragmented OS with multiple iterations and tweaks by operators.
In Checkout, it also lacks a popular billing system which has persuaded some developers to either ignore the OS or choose ad-funded versions of the products only.

From the article: 'Apple is being sued for allegedly letting mobile apps on the iPhone and iPad send personal information to ad networks without the consent of users.' Some of the apps listed are on the Android Market as well, but there is no mention of a similar problem for Google. One wonders if Apple could be persuaded to strip access to the unique phone identifiers from apps."
A followup article with an industry lawyer suggests that this lawsuit could be the first of many as users push back against privacy intrusions by app developers and ad networks.

We're not exactly sure of the cause of this fancy new issue affecting Apple's super cool iPhone line of cellphones, but apparently you've got trouble come 1/1/2011. According to an explosive stream of frustration-filled tweets on the Twitter microblogging service, when the clock strikes midnight, one off alarms will cease to sing out. The issue sounds eerily similar to recent Daylight Savings Time trouble we witnessed back in November, although we saw both repeating alarm and single alarm failures.
So how can you fix this potentially life-ruining problem? Well until Apple patches its OS -- and it's currently unclear if this is just iOS 4.2.1 or earlier versions as well -- you can simply create a recurring alarm at the time you need to be woken up, and then disable it once your dreams are completely ruined. We're taking a deeper look into the issue and have contacted Apple -- if we get more news, you guys will be the first to know. In the meantime, feel free to commiserate in comments, and... happy new year?
Update: 9to5 Mac says that the bug will get fixed all by itself once the calendar hits January 3rd. We haven't confirmed this, but if it turns out to be the case, that's pretty good news. In less good news, the issue seems to be affecting iOS 4.1 and 4.0.2 as well.
Update 2: Apple responded to us on the issue, though they didn't offer any surprises:
We're aware of an issue related to non repeating alarms set for January 1 or 2. Customers can set recurring alarms for those dates and all alarms will work properly beginning January 3.

App developer m3me has just release Remote Conductor ($9.99) tor the iPad. This app turns an iPad into a full-featured trackpad for the Mac. Remote Conductor has three modes to choose from. The default setting is the trackpad mode, where the entire iPad screen becomes one giant trackpad. Multi-Touch gestures are supported as well. Three finger gestures are not the standard Apple ones, however, instead the app uses three finger gestures to drag windows or select blocks of text.
At the top right of the screen are icons for Remote Conductor’s three modes. They represent Track, Launch and Switch. Track is the aforementioned trackpad mode. Launch mode allows you to see all of your Mac’s applications...

It's an important time in any young OS's life: NES emulation. Windows Phone 7 has just passed this important puberic milestone, thanks to the hard work of Matt Bettcher. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't seem to recognize the significance, and is keeping the emulator out of the Marketplace (as per its no-funny-business terms of service). Matt's trying to drum up some community support to change Microsoft's mind on the matter, and in the meantime he's planning to open source his project. There's video after the break of the emulator running inside the WP7 emulator. It does the heart good!

Google and Motorola haven't quite announced that Honeycomb tablet we're expecting to see at CES in just a couple days, but that's not stopping eLocity, makers of the A7 tablet pictured above -- the company just announced no fewer than seven 10-inch Tegra 2 tablets running Android 3.0. Specs are pretty light, but we're told the new A10 line will use the dual-core Tegra 2 T-250, have "high-resolution" multitouch screens, microSD storage, USB ports, a front-facing camera, and feature an HDMI port that supports 1080p output. So why seven 10-inch tablets with what seem to be the same basic specs? We have no idea -- we're sure to find out more when CES kicks off. PR after the break.

First there were the Tactile+ Plus stickers. Now, there's an exciting new development in the field of fake buttons for touchscreens! The Fling is an analog stick designed to be placed on an iPad's screen, over the virtual joystick. Unlike the Tactile+ Plus, there's no adhesive to apply to your screen -- it uses suction cups.
The transparent design (with a small accent in your choice of three colors) is designed not to obscure too much of the view, and it comes with a lovely pouch for storage when you aren't playing a game with virtual controls or don't want to be seen with some thing stuck to the screen. If you're desperate enough to be playing games with virtual controls on an iPad, then you're probably at the point where you're willing to try crazy stuff like this. You can pre-order it for $24.95.

With few exceptions, most social networking apps that piggyback on Twitter's framework fail to deliver anything worth downloading, let alone uttering a word about to another social networking fanatic. Fortunately, such is not the case with UberSocial, a sweet new social networking app that comes to us from Tunji Afonja, a jailbreak developer whose work is hosted on ModMyi.
Promising a unique Twitter experience that actually is unique, the free iPhone app enables you to follow the people that you actually possess some remote interest in. Best of all, even if you are a professed Twitter hater, you can still enjoy UberSocial. Why? Because you don't have to be on Twitter yourself to keep tabs on those who are.

A patent applied for over a year before the new iPod nano came to light - but released last week - shows Apple is considering a simplified multi-touch interface for its smallest media player that allow a user to control it without looking at the touchscreen. Addressing issues some users have had operating the device when it's worn on a clip, the interface includes different combinations of taps and holds for playback and volume controls.
The patent application notes that having physical buttons on a device increases the size of the device, but that smaller devices with fewer buttons are difficult to operate when looking away from the device, such as during a workout.

While we all wait for an untethered jailbreak solution, the Dev-Team has updated redsn0w with a "one-click" option for the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak. Rather than the multiple screens you normally see, you can now use redsn0w on the command line to "Just boot tethered for now."
There are currently two major efforts towards an untethered jailbreak. The "jailbreak monte" backup plan is still in beta, and is only available to developers who have access to the 4.2 beta 3 build. While that is underway, @comex is working on the 4.2.1 untether and making good progress (even if slower than many of us would like). So since we're kind of stuck with the current stet of affairs for the immediate future, the Dev-Team added some command-line options to simplify the process.

Well, look who just oozed into being, Google's latest flavor of Android, the tablet-friendly 3.0, Honeycomb. We heard talk that 3.0 would be exclusively for tablets, as in not for phones, and that looks to be played out with the text "Entirely for Tablet" seen early in the video. Perhaps the best thing to say is that this looks more or less nothing like Android. Sure, the browser is the same, and the Gmail app will be familiar to iPad users, but trust us when we say there's a lot of lovely UI in the video above to admire...and a lot of glowly blue lights, too. Apparently we weren't the only ones who saw Tron:Legacy on opening night.

Details of Apple's plans for the Liquidmetal alloy it licensed earlier this year are beginning to take shape. Rather than a radical new computer or mobile device case, though, it's possible that one of the first uses of the light, strong alloy will be in fuel cells that will replace the batteries of future iPhones and MacBooks. Cult of Mac has discovered a patent granted to Apple for fuel cell collector plates made of Liquidmetal, raising the possibility of mobile devices that can run for weeks without refueling.
Fuel cells take a fuel like hydrogen gas and use an oxidant like the oxygen in the air to create a chemical reaction that separates electrons from the fuel onto collector plates to produce electricity, water and heat. Spacecraft and satellites use fuel cells for onboard power, and the potential to use them to power electronic devices has been recognized for some time.

We've seen many arcade-style joysticks for video game consoles over the years, and the trend is making its way to the tablet market. The ThinkGeek Joystick-It attaches to your tablet's screen in a position of your choosing so that you can game on your shiny new slate in a decidedly retro way. The joystick is all-aluminum, works with any game that has an on-screen control pad, and does its thing without the use of batteries. We don't know how the device actually attaches to the display, but we do know that it is more aesthetically pleasing than other tactile control solutions we've seen at CES this year. The Joystick-It will cost $24.95 and be available by the end of January, so if old-school gaming is your thing, check out the demo video after the break.

We've seen plenty of data to show that Android is the hottest-selling smartphone OS among US buyers today, but now we have a stat point to show that it's doing pretty well in cumulative terms as well. According to ComScore's latest estimates, Android had 26 percent of all US smartphone subscribers in the quarter ending November 2010, bettering Apple's iPhone for the first time. The major victim of Android's ascendancy has actually been RIM's BlackBerry, whose lead at the top contracted by 4.1 percentage points (nearly 11 percent less than the share it had in the previous quarter). Guess those Verizon iPhones and dual-core BBs had better start arriving pretty soon.

You may recall ThinkGeek's pretty convincing April Fools' prank last year: the iCade cabinet for the iPad. Now, thanks to the keen beans at Ion, the two companies held hands and turned this totally rad concept into reality (although they're definitely not the first). Come late spring, retro gaming enthusiasts will be able to pick up one of these well-built Bluetooth joystick kits for $99 direct from Ion, and eventually they'll make it across the pond for about €99 and Ł79. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of classic games available to suit the iCase courtesy of Atari, who's already got Asteroids working beautifully on the iPad (and it's actually a lot harder than it looks); any iOS game that takes a Bluetooth input peripheral should also play nice with the iCade. Hands-on video after the break.

Apple itself might not be at CES, but the prospective upgrade of its iPad to version two has accessory manufacturers (or at least manufacturers' imaginations) working overtime. We've just come across our second iPad 2 mockup, this one a lot more comprehensive than the first, which seems to mesh well with some earlier imagery we've seen of the supposed next-gen Apple tablet. Not only that, its rear label reveals an A1337 product code -- one that's also shared by the current iPad WiFi + 3G -- and lists 128GB of onboard storage, two times the current tablet's maximum. We don't know what material it's made out of, but it felt felt the same as the current iPad's aluminum shell. All that said, this is still just a mockup from a no-name accessory maker and we're just as willing to believe it was put together on the basis of some decent rumor research as we are to think that it really is the iPad 2. No harm in browsing some pictures of this 9.4mm-thick device, though eh?

The above images are purported to be Foxconn diagrams of apple's next generation iPhone - the iPhone 5. That's according to a Chinese language Apple blog, which posted photos of the drawings. Still, a discerning, informed eye would have to conclude that there is very little compelling evidence apparent about the design to suggest that it's a future iPhone model. Many, however, believe the photos are legitimate and were likely taken by a disgruntled Foxconn employee. As a result, these images have the blogosphere buzzing Friday.
Most tech gurus and bloggers say that the only hope for validating the images would come in the form of an official request by Apple to pull the photos from the myriad sites that now display them. Of course, it is unlikely that Apple would show its cards in such a gratuitous fashion and, instead, simply leave these pics to circulate under the umbrella of rumors that is already teaming some six months before the iPhone 5 will likely even see the light of day.

Concerns have been raised about Mac App Store security after a simple cut-and-paste workaround was found that defeats copy protection for some paid apps. While many pundits are blaming developers for not following Apple's security guidelines, others are pointing out that the recommendations are complicated and incomplete.
Just hours after apps began appearing on the Mac App Store yesterday, news emerged that you could get around the copy protection on some apps by exchanging the receipt and signature files with ones from a free app. John Gruber of Daring Fireball said the vulnerability was due to poor programming, saying that "it appears that many apps don't perform any validation whatsoever," and urged Apple to "test for this in the review process

Here’s a mounting system that adds mechanical tilt control to the iPhone. It uses two servo motors to rotate along the X and Y axes. An analog joystick is used along with an Arduino to control the movement of the apparatus. As you can see in the video after the break, this works quite well when playing accelerometer-based games. But adding a joystick isn’t the end-goal of the project. [Shane] plans to point a camera at the iPhone and use image recognition to play games automatically. That sounds like a big bite the chew but we’ve seen this work with Guitar Hero so we’re optimistic.

Android getting ported to the iPhone may be old news by now, but Android 2.3 (a.k.a. Gingerbread) getting ported to the iPhone? Well, that's something... new, if entirely expected. As before, it's the iPhone 3G doing the honors, and the port is still based on the iDroid project, which means you can hang onto iOS in a dual-boot configuration so you won't be left in the cold when the less-than-stable port decides not to cooperate. And, yes, this once again means that the iPhone has gotten the latest version of Android before many Android devices have.

Even on the heels of one longstanding rumor (the Verizon iPhone) finally resulting in reality - at least as of next Tuesday's formal announcement - the rumor mill proves incapable of rest. This weekend, Digg founder and widely read tech guru/blogger Kevin Rose made it clear that tech journalists have it all wrong with regard to the second-generation iPad. According to Rose, we won't have to wait until spring for a glimpse of the iPad 2.
Quote:
I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next "3-4 weeks", possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back

Worried about your Windows Phone 7 handset chomping down megabytes of 3G data when it should be asleep or utilizing WiFi instead? Microsoft hears your telegraphed fears, and has pledged to sleuth such suspicions of "phantom data" immediately. While Redmond wouldn't confirm whether its operating system was misbehaving to the tune of 2MB per hour like we've heard, the company told BBC News it would find out soon: "We are investigating this issue to determine the root cause and will update with information and guidance as it becomes available," reads Microsoft's statement on the matter. If it's all true, here's hoping we see some refunds or credits for the extra data usage, too.

If you've managed to use any piece of technology for ten years, it's safe to say that said piece has some serious lasting power in an era filled with flavors-of-the-week. It's a bit startling to think that Apple's iTunes has now fallen into that category, but sure enough, the music-turned-media-application is now a decade old. Fittingly enough, it just hit version 10.0 a few months ago, and it may very well be tweaked to play nice with an all new device later this week. Head on past the break for a look at the very first iTunes introduction at Macworld 2001, and then think about how many times you've hated your life as you watched that sync progress bar crawl along at glacial speeds. No, seriously, think about it.

There's no company in the industry that's better at consistently having confidentiality come off its products in the FCC's database right on time better than Apple -- and indeed, the CDMA version of the iPhone just hit the filing system. Model A1349 (as opposed to the GSM version's A1332) has the expected test results for CDMA / EV-DO Rev. A on the 850 and 1900MHz bands along with Bluetooth and WiFi without a whiff of GSM support for global roaming -- not to say Verizon gave any hint that you might be able to roam outside of CDMA countries anyway.

We've seen modders and peripheral manufacturers alike try to make gaming on the iPhone's glossy, contextless touch screen a bit more tangible, but we've never seen anything quite like this. Shane Wighton of Mechanically Inclined has managed to turn an ordinary Arduino, a webcam, some motors and a metal frame into a ... well, we're not sure if there's a name for it yet, because "Remote Gyroscopic Movement Controller Suspension System" seems just a tad wordy.
The device allows you to tilt your iPhone with precision using a remote controller, which would hypothetically not only change your strategy when you're desperately grasping for that high score in Tilt to Live, but also change the title of the game entirely. Again, we'd need to workshop a new title, as Remote Gyroscopic Movement etc. to Live doesn't exactly drip right off the tongue. Wighton hopes to program the machine to play the game by itself, which we think we can all agree is terrifying. Until then, check out a video of this clever, verbose mod after the jump.

The official PlayStation app for iOS and Android mobile devices is now available for download free of charge, Sony has confirmed.
As reported last month, version 1.0 lets you check your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends' games and online status. You'll also get PlayStation and PSP news as it happens, and can log on to the PlayStation Blog.
It's compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch devices sporting OS 4 and above, and most Android handsets with a minimum of OS 1.6.
For now, it's only available in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands, but Sony hopes to roll it out to "most of SCEE's markets" with the next update, which is due "soon".

Microsoft views the Windows Phone 7 as its very own handheld games console, according to the platform holder's mobile gaming chief.
"This is our mobile platform for games," Kevin Unangst told Kotaku at the CES show held in Las Vegas over the weekend.
"The same people who make the Halo game, the same development folks, work on this, this is our mobile console," he explained.
Unangst pointed out that the device had sold 1.5 million units since it launched in November last year and now boasted 5500 apps on its marketplace from 30 different developers. 60 of them are Xbox Live enabled games.
He added that Microsoft was working hard to encourage Epic to develop for the platform, though no agreement has yet been made.
Microsoft announced a handful of new titles for the phone at its CES presentation last week, including Fable II: Coin Golf, Game Room, Full House Poker, Pac-Man, Pro Evolution Soccer and Pocket God.

Microsoft wants the US Patent and Trademark Office to reject Apple's application for the name 'App Store', arguing that the term is generic and one the iPhone maker's competitors should also be able to use.
Yahoo reports that Apple's trademark application, which was filed in 2008, relates to goods and services including "retail store services featuring computer software provided via the internet and other computer and electronic communication networks".
In its motion, filed on Tuesday, Microsoft said: "'App store' is a generic name that Apple should not be permitted to usurp for its exclusive use. Competitors should be free to use 'app store' to identify their own stores and the services offered in conjunction with those stores."
While the term 'App Store' has become synonymous with Apple and its products, Microsoft and a number of other major players in the retail market also operate or are developing their own app stores.
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 now plays home to 5,500 apps in its marketplace, more than 60 of which carry Xbox Live features.

We'd been disappointed to find that iOS 4.2 only brought AirPlay video support to built-in Apple apps on the iPhone and iPad, but it looks like that's changing soon -- Apple just posted up the first iOS 4.3 beta, which allows devs to send video from apps or websites to an Apple TV. There's also a new beta of the Apple TV software for testing it out -- it doesn't have any version notes, so we don't know if it offers any additional features as well. One thing we're not seeing explicitly listed is any mention of mobile hotspot functionality -- and considering the Verizon iPhones we saw were running iOS 4.2.5, we've got a feeling everything still hasn't been merged up. We'll let you know if we find anything else -- stay tuned.
Update: What do you know -- personal hotspot is indeed in there, although it needs to be enabled on the carrier side to work. We're also told the iPad's gained some additional multitouch gestures, so it's quite a feature-party. We'll keep you updated as we learn more.
Update 2: Oh snap -- the iPad's side switch can now be set back to being an orientation lock! Praise be. Screenshot after the break. Thanks, Matt!
Update 3: We're also seeing a new FaceTime icon, which is nice, and 9to5 Mac noticed that the iPad now supports fullscreen iAd banners, which is less nice.

n the first update to Windows Phone 7, Microsoft is planning to block ChevronWP7, which allowed users to unlock any retail Windows Phone 7 device for application side-loading without having to pay $99 per year for a WP7 marketplace account. The update, which is slated for release this month, will also introduce copy and paste functionality, among other improvements. ChevronWP7 was discontinued less than a week after its release about two months ago. ChevronWP7's three developers, Long Zheng, Rafael Rivera, and Chris Walsh were approached by Brandon Watson, Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7, and decided to kill their app.

The developers at FireCore have released Seas0nPass, a tethered jailbreak for the second-generation Apple TV running 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1). Like PwnageTool or Sn0wBreeze, Seas0nPass creates a custom IPSW that gets loaded on your device. The tool is extremely simple and easy to use, automating all the steps except actually entering DFU mode (like most JB tools, it will guide you through that as well). It will even download the stock IPSW from the internet for you.
Seas0nPass is free and open source: you can download the source code from Github.
Make sure you have a microUSB cable before beginning.

History lesson, folks. If you dig far enough into iOS's code, you'll eventually come across iPhone3,1, which is the AT&T iPhone 4, and the analogous iPhone3,2 (i.e. Verizon iPhone). It's nothing we haven't seen before, but then along comes iOS 4.3 with a handful of new mystery identifiers to spurn speculation -- namely, two new-generation iPhones (4,1 and 4,2) and three iPads (2,1; 2,2; and 2,3). Speculate all you want, but there isn't much else at all we can say definitively here, but if we had to take a guess, it's the GSM and CDMA variants of the next-gen models (plus a WiFi-only iPad). It is interesting to note the lack of an "iPhone4,3" given the yet-to-be-revealed iPhone3,3 is still there -- will the last member ever see the light of day? Outside of iOS 4.3 but still very much related, BGR is claiming it's heard from sources that the next iPhone / iPad models will eschew the physical home button altogether in lieu of the new multi-finger gestures and that employees at Cupertino are already testing such devices. That seems a little more out there to us; five-finger pinch to home feels extremely clunky. The real takeaway here? We can finally have an iPhone rumor that doesn't involve wondering if it'll head to a new US carrier.

Do you want this Game Boy-themed iPhone 4 case? Well, how does it feel to want? Not all that hot from where we're sitting, that's for damn sure. Spotted at Incipio's CES booth, the company put the case together to demo the company's production capabilities. Sadly, for us, the thing won't be coming to market at any time in the near future (unless someone in Shenzhen decides to take on the cause, that is). We must say, this is a big improvement over the company's iPod nano watch bands -- and an immense improvement over the guy who shoved an HTC Aria inside his old Game Boy (throwing in a fake iPhone 4 for good measure).

For whatever reason, Apple has a thing with ten billion. The outfit served up its ten billionth iTune right around this time last year, and more importantly, served its one billionth app in April of 2009. In just 1.5 years, the company has seen that figure soar nearly tenfold, which is impressive no matter how you slice it. Of course, we're quite curious to know if this includes duplicate downloads, app updates and just free or paid apps, but regardless, there's no question that Cupertino (and quite a few developers) are raking it in. Of course, the explosion of the iPad certainly helped boost the download frequency, and if we had to guess, we'd say it'll take even less time to double up this milestone. You know, once next month happens. Oh, and if you get lucky enough, you could score a $10,000 iTunes gift card if you just so happen to download the ten billionth app -- make sure it's a good one.

We love all the little goodies that come out of iOS developer builds. It's been only a day since 4.3 hit the scene and already we've seen hints of future iPhone / iPad models, a Find My Friends feature, and now more hints of a camera for the next iPad. Which, of course, is far from the first time we've heard iPad and camera in the same utterance (cases, mockups, paperwork, even more code). Today's revelation comes in the form of shutter screens and camera / video icons care of 9 to 5 Mac, but here's the catch: to believe these imagery to be the real thing is to also accept that the iPad 2 might have the same 1024 x 768 display, given that's what these pictures are optimized for. You didn't really believe the iPad 2 would have a 9.7-inch, 2530 x 1897 resolution retina display... did you? Well, it's only speculative, anyway.

As many of us continue to wait for a stable release of an untethered jailbreak for current generation iPhones, iPods, and iPads on firmware 4.2.1, the iPhone Dev Team has announced that they are already at work on a jailbreak for the Verizon iPhone.
The team has been working on a jailbreak for firmware 4.2.5 (first seen on the Verizon iPhone 4) and 4.3 beta, which was just released to developers by Apple on Wedenesday. However, Dev Team member MuscleNerd has posted on his twitter that nothing will be released until after the current firmwares are out of beta, simply because "Most people can't take advantage of betas." We also suspect that it has something to do with the fact that they want to be extremely careful about the exploits they find, so that Apple will not patch them up before the update is released.

With about half a year to go before the expected fifth-generation iPhone launch, the East Asian supply chain is already humming with rumors about the new phone's design. A supplier of bulk silicon is blabbing that Qualcomm is buying up wafers at a prodigious rate for iPhone 5 parts, and hinting that it could provide parts for a new Apple system-on-a-chip called the "A8." Nothing is known about this purported SoC, though the name does suggest that Apple could finally be producing a dual-core CPU.
Kinsus is a Taiwanese manufacturer that turns out large quantities of the silicon wafers which serve as the substrate for integrated circuits. An anonymous source at the company told Taiwan's ...

On Friday morning, MuscleNerd provided an update to our community. Calling it the "Official iPhone unlock statement," MuscleNerd says: "no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out." If its' true that good things really do take time, now would be a good time to aquire that virtue called patience - assuming being a member of this community hasn't already imbued you with that aforementioned attribute.
Although the revelation isn't groundbreaking, MuscleNerd's latest comment is serving to cool the jets of those who think the Dev Team is about to drop "what's next" in the coming days. "It’s silly to release anything during Apple betas," says MuscleNerd, "because most people can’t take advantage.”
The news from MuscleNerd comes just as an NBC News affiliate reports that Apple is ramping up efforts to recruit the Federal Government to assist in cracking down on iOS jailbreaking.

You may or may not be old enough to remember Sierra On-Line, makers of such fine games as Leisure Suit Larry, the King's Quest, and Police Quest, but none of that matters anymore. Thanks to the folks over at Sarien, you now have access to these glorious titles via your iPad's web browser. The entire catalog has been ported over, and the games which were previously available via the web only are now there on your Apple tablet! The whole shebang is now hosted on Amazon's content distribution network, and the games have been extensively tweaked for that multitouch interface. Sarien hasn't apparently been issued a cease and desist from Activision -- owners of the catalog -- yet, so get these free gems of yesteryear while you can.

Researchers at the University of Michigan describe how to hijack the iPhone's headset port to power peripherals, establish bi-directional communications with them, and interface various sensors, all without jailbreaking your iPhone or having to pay thousands to access to the Apple Dock Connector. This makes it possible for students, hackers, and DIYers to extend the phone's functionality to the physical world. The team is giving away 20 HiJack modules/programmers to enable new apps

The discovery of a new driver bundle inside the iOS 4.3 beta is suggesting a potentially radical leap in performance for iDevices. The PowerVR SGX543, the smallest OpenCL-capable graphics core, isn't used in any current iOS device, but its inclusion in the beta suggests one or more future device will incorporate it. The power of this co-processor could lead to iPads and iPhones that have comparable performance to notebook computers.
Apple currently uses Imagination Technology's PowerVR SGX535 as the graphics coprocessor in the A4 chip. This is the same GPU used in the iPhone 3GS, as well as the Motorola Droid and the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab. It supports OpenGL 2.0 and can render up to 28 million polygons per second with a fillrate of 500 million pixels per second. The next-generation SGX543, by comparison, can render 35 million polygons per...

Reports abound that the next generation of iPhone and iPad hardware will run (nay, sprint) on multi-core processors and feature screen resolutions higher than many desktop monitors.
That processor will be made by Qualcomm and be dubbed the A5, according to Engadget, and be under the hood of all three upcoming devices: iPad 2, iPhone 5 and Apple TV 2.
AppleInsider goes on to claim that the iPad 2 will use that power to produce resolutions that potentially reach 2048 by 1536 pixels.
The iPad 2 will also apparently feature a camera on the front and back, an SD slot and launch in April, to coincide with anniversary of the iPad 1 launch.
The iPhone 5, meanwhile, is reported to represent a rethink in iPhone design - albeit one presumably under the hood. Word is that Apple staff are testing the device internally as you read this, and that a summer release is planned.
The unwritten word is that games will look and perform much better on iPhone 5 and iPad 2. And when you consider Infinity Blade as today's technical benchmark then the future is bright indeed.

Korean smartphone maker LG has expressed disappointment at the 'consumer visibility" of the firm's Windows Phone 7 smartphone effort.
Speaking in an interview with British gadget site Pocket-Lint, LG global 'marketing strategy and planning team director' James Choi said that the firm had high expectations and that the firm feels that Windows Phone 7 is "absolutely perfect for a huge segment" of consumers.
Android, by contrast, has been seen as being "extremely complicated" while Windows Phone 7 is "very intuitive and easy to use" but Choi said that Windows Phone 7 being so user friendly meant that some believed the Microsoft mobile OS reboot was "a bit boring."
Choi reiterated that Windows Phone 7 has strong potential "even though the first push wasn't what everyone expected," he said.
Interestingly, Choi suggested that a multi-OS microcosm was in demand from the network operators with some saying there "too much Android in the portfolio".
Admitting that there was "skepticism" in the market around Windows Phone 7, Choi said that the appearance of mid range and low-end Windows Phone 7 handsets will mean that Windows Phone 7 will experience market share growth.
"Right now it’s only exclusively present in a high tier, because of its hardware requirements, and that’s limiting growth," Choi told Pocket-Lint.

So, AppleInsider has some new info on Apple's successor to the A4, which we were talking up last week, and our sources say it's spot on. Specifically, AI claims that Apple is moving to dual-core SGX543 graphics, up from the A4's single SGX535 GPU (also known as the PowerVR 535). What's particularly great about this move is that the graphical power improvement is rated at around 4X the current generation -- which makes a true 4X resolution iPad "Retina Display" upgrade seem much more of a possibility. We're also starting to see 1080p HDMI video output as a "default" spec in this year's generation of devices, so there's no reason Apple will want to be left out -- particularly in the Apple TV -- and these dual graphics cores could handle that easily. The same cast of A4 characters are to credit for this new A5 generation, including the Apple-owned Intrinsity and PA Semi, while Samsung will again do the production duties. But details aside, we're just excited to play around with all this new horsepower when it hits -- apparently the PSP 2 is rumored to use the same graphics architecture with even more cores. Isn't Moore's law a grand thing?

Despite losing in court last year, Apple is still trying to crack down on jailbreakers and unlockers. This time, they're asking the US Copyright Office for help, using specious arguments about software piracy and copyright infringement. Though these arguments are not new, and had been rejected by federal regulators in last July's decision, it's clearly Apple's hope that if they complain loudly enough and frequently enough, eventually they'll either find a venue where they'll get a favorable ruling, or scare people away from making modifications to their own devices without Apple's sanction.
The Librarian of Congress, who oversees the US Copyright Office, released new exemptions to the Digital Copyright Millennium Act last year which ruled that jailbreaking or unlocking an iPhone or any other device is not illegal. The ruling was clear and unambiguous, and even went so far as to state that there was "no basis for copyright law to assist Apple in protecting its restrictive business model." In a response almost childlike in its vindictiveness, Apple then released a statement vowing to void the warranty of jailbroken or unlocked devices, which is an action that is still permitted under the law, but seemingly aimed more at intimidating users than providing product support.
Today - in an NBC news report that rather typically confuses jailbreaking, unlocking, and pirating - we're learning that Apple has directly approached the Copyright Office asking them to crack down on the practice of jailbreaking, saying in part that "current jailbreak technologies now in widespread use utilize unauthorized modifications to the copyrighted bootloader and operating system, resulting in the infringement of the copyrights in those programs." This gambit comes despite the fact that the Copyright Office explicitly stated in July that "while a copyright owner might try to restrict the programs that can be run on a particular operating system, copyright law is not the vehicle for imposition of such restrictions."
Even if Apple fails once again to legally sanction users who want to modify the devices they have bought and paid for, the mere request itself may serve to dissuade developers for writing apps or tweaks for Cydia, fearing that they may be slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit. It's difficult to see this as anything other than bullying behavior on Apple's part.

Rumors surrounding the iPad 2 have been swirling for some time now. The latest rumors indicate the next iPad model will sport a higher resolution screen. The current iPad has a resolution of 1024x768 and 132 ppi. There has been much talk lately that Apple will be including a Retina Display (300 ppi) with the next iPad, but that is highly unlikely. A 9.7-inch screen with a resolution that high would be impractical. It’s far more likely that Apple will simply double the horizontal and vertical resolution as they did with the iPhone 4. The iPhone 3GS has a resolution of 480x320, while the iPhone 4’s screen was increased to 960x640.
Recently, a developer found artwork within version 1.1 of Apple’s iBooks app that was larger than typical iPad images. Upon closer inspection the image seemed to be pixel-doubled.

As Apple approaches reaching the 10 billion downloads milestone for its App Store, new estimates suggest that an average of 60 apps have been downloaded per iOS device sold.
This is five times greater than in 2008, when estimated downloads were around 10 apps per iOS device. Asymco analyst Horace Dediu arrived at the figure via a combination of official device and software sales figures and estimates.
He calculated that the Store currently sees over 30 million downloads per day, and rising.
He also noted that "if we measure downloads as a function of the number of months since store launch, we can see that Apps reached 10 billion downloads in less than half the time it took songs (31 vs 67 months.)"
With this in mind, he predicted that app downloads would surpass iTunes Music Store downloads "I suspect by March."
While many apps are free, Dediu notes that "as the number of apps attached to any single device continues to increase, apps create increasingly higher switching costs for users" - meaning there may be increasingly reluctance to move to non-Apple devices.

Retail giant Gamestop has revealed more of its plans for recent acquisition Kongregate, today announcing an Android game hub based on the service.
Kongregate Arcade is billed as " the world's largest collection of free mobile games for Android," thanks to its use of Flash titles.
Over 300 games are available at launch, with more added weekly. Kongregate is also "actively looking to identify opportunities to work with its community of more than 8,500 developers to create new Flash based game content exclusively for the Kongregate Arcade library which should further jumpstart Android as a viable gaming platform."
The free Arcade application is available now via the Android Market, and works on all devices running Android 2.2 or later.
At present it includes a small amount of in-app advertising, and also offers user registration. There is no other overt monetisation method at present, but it joins a number of planned alternatives to Google's own Market - including one from Amazon.
"In creating the Kongregate Arcade, we wanted to solve the game discovery problem that all Android owners have shared," said Jim Greer, CEO of Kongregate.
"It was important to reinforce our mission to provide gamers with great free games anytime, anywhere, and to broaden the reach of the Kongregate community across multiple platforms. The arrival of Kongregate Arcade is the perfect next step in that strategy."

Two arrests have been made connected to the security breach that exposed thousands of iPad users' email addresses and other info last year. Daniel Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer (yeah, that guy again) have been taken into custody and charged with conspiracy to access a computer without authorization and fraud, for allegedly using a custom script (built by Spitler) called iPad 3G Account Slurper to access AT&T's servers, mimic an iPad 3G, and try out random ICC identifiers. Once a valid ICC was found, one could harvest the user's name and email address. Of course, the hackers maintain that this was all done to force AT&T to close a major security flaw, and we'll be interested to see what exactly the company does to make things right.

There's usually as much fun to be had before an Apple product launch as there is after, and this upcoming iPad 2 device is no exception. The latest scuttlebutt it has succumbed to comes courtesy of some cases that have cropped up in China -- AppleInsider and MIC Gadget have independently found iPad 2 shells that feature nearly identical cutouts -- with the resulting allegations pointing toward a rear-facing camera, an SD card slot, and perhaps even a Mini DisplayPort receptacle. Our own sources have confirmed the former two, but the latter, a miniaturized video output already featured in MacBooks, is a new development and less of a certainty. Then again, looking at the size of the hole leaves few alternative options (and a USB slot is extremely unlikely), so we're willing to believe that a Mini DisplayPort will be an inclusion Apple makes for the sake of offering choice -- even if it prefers you to send your video streams over an untethered AirPlay connection.

Apple has posted record revenues, sales and profits in its latest quarterly financial report, seeing earnings rise by 78 per cent in year on year figures.
The report was issued last night and shows figures for the quarter ending on Christmas day 2010, which is Apple's first financial quarter 2011. Quarterly revenue stood at $26.74 billion (Ł16.7bn) and quarterly profit at $6 billion (Ł3.75bn), both record figures for the company. During that period last year, Apple posted revenues of $15.68 billion (Ł9.8bn) and profit of $3.38 billion (Ł2.1bn).
The company also released specific sales figures for its major lines, shifting 4.13 million Macs during the period, 23 per cent more than the same quarter in 2010. Apple also sold 16.24 million iPhones during the three months leading up to Christmas 2010, an 86 per cent growth year on year.
19.45 million iPods were bought at retail during the quarter - a seven percent unit decline from one year ago. The company's newest product, the iPad, sold 7.33 million units during the quarter.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who announced Monday that he'll be leaving the company in the hands of experienced COO Tim Cook whilst he takes a period of medical leave, made a statement to accompany the figures.
"We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales," said Jobs. "We are firing on all cylinders and we've got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can't wait to get their hands on."
"We couldn't be happier with the performance of our business, generating $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $22 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.90."

In the run up to its 10 billionth App Store download, Apple has revealed charts listing the all-time most-downloaded software from its iOS service.
In the US, games comprise nine of the top ten paid apps, with this dropping to 8/10 in the UK. The recently contentious Doodle Jump is the most downloaded paid app in the US, though it is overtaken by Angry Birds in the UK store.
Also placing highly in both charts are Tap Tap Revenge 3, Pocket God, Flight Control, Bejewelled Blitz and Traffic Rush.
Gamers are far less prevalent in the free iPhone apps chart, with Paper Toss the only appearance in the top ten.
Paid iPad apps include four games in the top ten, and just one in the free chart.
Figures for most of these games are undisclosed, but Angry Birds is known to have sold 12 million copies across both formats.

Playboy boss Hugh Hefner has confirmed that — despite Steve Jobs' protestations that Apple is pure and Android is for porn — an app for browsing uncensored back issues of Playboy is to launch later this year on the iPad. The news, which is likely to generate significantly more buzz for Apple's popular tablet as a publishing device than Rupert Murdoch's delayed digital newspaper The Daily, comes courtesy of Hefner's Twitter stream, in which he proclaimed: 'Big news! Playboy — both old & new — will be available on [the] iPad beginning in March.

Apple just dropped iOS 4.3 beta 2 on world, and with it a big sad bomb: those nifty iPad multitasking gestures we discovered in beta 1 won't be enabled when 4.3 ships to customers. Instead, Cupertino says it's "providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps," Oh well -- there's always 4.4, or even iOS 5, we suppose. We're on the lookout for other new features, but for now let us know what else you spot in comments, okay?

Apple's COO (and current Steve Jobs stand-in) Tim Cook thinks "there's not much" competition to the company's iPad tablet. When queried about Apple's view on what the rest of the market offers, Cook was brutally candid in describing Windows-driven machines as generally being big, heavy and expensive, while current generations of Android-based slates are in his opinion merely "scaled-up smartphones." While we agree that Windows 7 isn't a terribly touch-friendly affair, we don't know that Cook's comments on Android are quite so pertinent now that Google's tablet-savvy Honeycomb iteration has been unveiled. Then again, he has something to say about the next generation of Android tablets as well, noting that the ones announced at CES lack pricing and release schedules, leading him to conclude that "today they're vapor." Ouch. As a parting shot, Tim took a moment to reaffirm Apple's belief that its integrated approach will always trump the fragmented nature of Android and its plurality of app stores.

If you came along for our most recent podcast you heard us discussing some of the new features uncovered in the iOS 4.3 beta, including multitouch gestures for multitasking like four-finger swipes to go between apps. They seem hugely useful on an iPad but, on an iPhone, sounded like a bit of a handful. Now we have some video evidence, with Antoni Nygaard managing to get them working on his iPhone, along with the lock/mute switch toggle as well. Given these multitouch gestures aren't coming to the iPad (yet) we're guessing it won't be hitting the iPhone either, but we can always hope.

If you've been cheekily holding on to the old version of iDOS, the one that got yanked from the App Store in record time, we're sorry to say that you've got a decision to make. It's now back and available for download, and if you want to keep your old one you're going to have to update all your other apps around it. This free version has been simplified somewhat and graced with a suite of formerly freeware apps that we haven't seen since we lost our giant box of floppies back in 1999, including Wolfenstein 3D and the original Duke Nukem -- back when he was kicking butt in 2D. These are the only proggies that you can easily access from within the emulator, but we're told you can still move others into the /Apps/iDos/documents folder and run them from there. Now if only we could find our TIE Fighter floppies...

Tired of your Windows Phone 7 device sending and receiving random bouts of data? Well, Microsoft is, too -- and they've started to reach some conclusions from that investigation opened a few days ago. Apparently, there's a "third party" that's responsible for the misbehavior, and Redmond's already reached out to help 'em make the necessary fixes; the story isn't necessarily over, though, because they're still "investigating additional potential root causes," which we presume could involve the operating system itself. As for the third party, it seems a "small" number of customers are affected, which probably explains why it's taken this long for the complaints to come to a rolling boil. Here's the full statement:
"We have determined that a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones is configured in a manner that potentially causes larger than expected data downloads. We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents.
We are investigating additional potential root causes for the remainder of the reports.
A small (low single-digit) percentage of Windows Phone customers have reported being affected.
We are continuing to investigate this issue and will update with additional information and guidance as it becomes available."

iOS 4.3 beta 2, released to developers Wednesday, has revealed even more to the already substantial evidence that the second generation iPad will feature a camera, most likely one in front and one in back. This time, there's photo evidence found in the beta that all but proves that we'll see a camera when the next iPad, likely in the first quarter of this year.
An image was found in the beta, titled 'homeScreenOverlayFaceTime~ipad.png' that is allegedly used by iOS to allow a user to preview a wallpaper, before actually choosing it. The image includes three new app icons however, which all but confirms a camera on the next iPad. The apps are FaceTime, Camera, ad Photo Booth, which seems like there might just be a camera to use those apps.

Taiwan newspaper DigiTimes is reporting today that Apple will be including a Retina Display on the next iPad that will be twice the resolution of the current display. And yes, before anyone else says it: the fact that it's in DigiTimes is almost enough alone to conclude that this report is bunk. There are, however, other valid reasons to discount the rumor.
#1 RAM. Doubling the current iPad's resolution means going from 1024 x 768 pixels all the way up to 2048 x 1536, and as John Gruber notes over at Daring Fireball, that's almost as many pixels as the 27" iMac at 2560 x 1440 resolution. The iMac comes with 512 MB of RAM on its graphics card, though, and the iPad has only 256 MB total, which must be shared by the CPU and the GPU. It takes a lot of memory to power that many pixels,..

Jay "saurik" Freeman has been hard at work on what he calls a "full package index:" a centralized database of Cydia packages. One of the first features based on this fundamental restructuring is now live on Cydia's homepage: the new " Manage Account" option. Finally, there's a simple way to determine what you've purchased on the Cydia Store, giving you a quick and easy way to re-install your apps, tweaks, and themes after a restore.
There are some caveats to be aware of. First off, if you had originally purchased your package through RockYourPhone, it may or may not show up in your "Installable Purchases" list unless you've explicitly linked the two accounts. As saurik says, he "tried very hard to automatically connect together accounts 'as if by magic' sometimes you will need to manually associate your Rock account."

More details have emerged about Google's surprise barring of Kongregate Arcade from its Android Market.
The GameStop-owned app acted as a hub for free Flash games hosted on Kongregate.com, but was removed from the Android Market mere hours after release "for unknown reasons."
Kongregate boss CEO Jim Greer has since told Joystiq that Arcade was pulled because "they claim you can't use their app store to distribute another app store - which is a reasonable restriction.
"But to us, what's really bizarre, to call [Kongregate Arcade] an 'app store' seems like a pretty extreme stretch."
Greer claimed that the app had been shown to a number of Google representatives prior to release, who had responded very positively, "but they weren't the decision makers, unfortunately."
Drawing attention to the number of dubious applications on the Market, including "Game Boy ROMs and things like that", Greer claimed that "I'm not ready to say it's a philosophical shift from Google; you could misinterpret our app and think those are all native experiences, but right now I'm just confused."
Arcade was, he maintained, "playing content in a browser" rather than acting as an App Store. It is possible Google has become more sensitive to the concept of any potential Market rival, due to a recent announcement from Amazon that it would release its own alternative Android app store.
Google allows alternative stores to be installed on Android devices, but not via Market. Arcade thus remains available for manual install from Kongregate.

The iPad 2 has a camera." We know, it feels all but certain at this point (even when it's far from official), but perhaps we can expand on that quoted assertion further. Like everyone else who can laugh at Objective-C jokes, 9 to 5 Mac has been digging through the latest iOS SDK and found some data referring to K94, which it claims is the codename for the next-generation iPad. (For reference, the original iPad was K48.) Anyway, within that code lies a string reference to "Back Facing 1MP Photo." Going further, the front-facing camera is reportedly VGA -- same as the iPhone, same as the iPod touch. It's unclear if the also-found "K95" files also included the the same data, or what exactly that codename might be, but if you're the betting sort, feel free to say, "the iPad 2's megapixel mullet is 0.3 up front, 1 in the back." It's still a gamble until Apple unveils it with a puff of virtual smoke on a presentation slide.

There's a new iOS coming... eventually, and if you've jailbroken your device you know it's going to get locked up tight again. The latest version of Cydia won't change that, but getting back to where you left off just got a lot easier. The app has merged with Rock Your Phone and now enables you to sign in using a Google or Facebook account. It will then track your purchases and downloads so that they can be easily applied again. And again. And probably again. There's also a new rating system and lots of other goodies -- but don't take our word for it.

It looks like the Chronic Dev Team has confirmed an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. This comes as great news to many current-generation iOS device owners who are waiting patiently for an untethered jailbreak that does not require saved SHSH blobs and the ISPW file for iOS 4.2 beta 3, the latter of which is only available to developers. They've just a released a video showing off an iPhone 4 restarting, and then launching Cydia.

The Apple App Store hit the 10 billion app download mark overnight on Friday, marking a milestone involving an awful lot of Doodle Jump, Tap Tap Revenge and Angry Birds playing, not to mention Facebook and Pandora usage. The Apple App Store hit the 1 billion mark in April of 2009, after opening in July of 2008. Apple is rewarding the downloader of the 10 billionth free or paid App Store app with a $10,000 iTunes gift card in a bit of showmanship that Willy Wonka would be proud of. As of 7AM EST, however, Apple hadn't publicly identified the winner, only saying that you'd need to come back later to find out who won. Apple put an iOS app countdown ticker on its Website last week to build buzz around the milestone and generated about 250 million app downloads since. It also revealed a list of all-time most downloaded free and paid iPhone and iPad apps."
The winner of the $10k is Gail Davis, a British woman who's children installed an app without her knowledge. She actually thought the phone call from Apple was a prank at first. "My daughters told me they had downloaded it and they knew there was a competition and that we may have won it," she told BBC Radio 5 Live.

The rumors that a Playboy app would appear in the Apple App Store were greatly exaggerated. Playboy plans to offer an online service through which subscribers can access past and current issues of the nudie mag — and per Playboy, it will be accessible via Safari and support iPad features (whatever that means). But if Playboy does come out with a native app for iPad, all the nudity will be censored. That should be just fine for the legions of people who indeed read the magazine for the articles. This really shouldn't be a surprise, though: If Apple insists on 'protecting' users of its high-priced gear from pixelated naughty bits in a graphic-novel version of classic literature, it certainly won't let users access the full monty. It's a shame, though: If Apple's customers want access to that sort of content, Apple should allow them to get at it via a native app instead of suffering a potentially buggier, less secure browser-based experience.

MuscleNerd announced last night that the he has successfully ported the Monte untether to use iOS 4.1 blobs. This means that there is no need to burn an exploit to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1, and that the new greenpois0n previewed by Chronic Dev might be held in reserve. It also resolves ongoing concerns about SHSH piracy that have created controversy in the jailbreak community.
The "Jailbreak Monte" method is a way to recycle exploits by convincing the device that it's running a given firmware right up to the pwnage step, then switching to the newer firmware thereafter. Currently, you need to have an iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blob - which only people in the developer program legitimately have access to - in order to jailbreak 4.2.1 untethered using Monte.

For those who have been longing to unlock the power of the Apple TV 2 the wait is over. XBMC is now available for iOS devices. This isn’t limited to the tiny ARM-based set-top box, but extends to the entire family including iPad and iPhone 4. Included is the ability to play high def video up to 1080p without transcoding. But we think the best feature might be XBMC’s ability to easily stream media over the network from just about any operating system. Goodbye iTunes tethering.
If you’re comfortably using SSH to work with a Jailbroken device, ATV2 installation will be a snap as there’s already a source repository to install from. iPad and iPhone 4 are even easier, just add the repository in Cydia and install. Wow, when we first looked in on the new generation of ATV we really thought it would take longer than it has to see a port of our favorite open source media client. Thanks Team XBMC!

Apple has announced that downloads from its App Store have now passed ten billion.
The iPhone firm revealed that around seven billion of those downloads had occured during the last year - following a record quarter in which Apple claimed $6 billion in profit.
The ten billionth App was downloaded on Saturday 22 January, with UK citizen Gail Davis from Kent being awarded a $10,000 iTunes gift card for being the downloader in question. Her app of choice was Paper Glider.
"With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years-a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone-the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
"The App Store has revolutionised how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet."
While Schiller was referencing the likes of Android and Nokia in his statement, the iPad firm is currently involved in a legal showdown with Microsoft over Apple's claimed trademark of the term 'app store.'

Microsoft's been playing it really cool with the nascent Windows Phone 7 hacker community so far, which is winning them friends in all sorts of important places -- not the least of which is the ChevronWP7 team itself. The first guys to split the platform open for homebrew apps were recently invited up to Redmond for a powwow with the guys in charge, and it seems the meetings were fruitful to say the least; though much of what they saw was under NDA, they say they're "genuinely excited" by what Microsoft has in the works. Furthermore, Microsoft was kind enough to give the team a heads-up that an upcoming platform update would break the existing ChevronWP7 tool, though they say they're "collaborating with Microsoft on an interim solution that will continue to support homebrew developments after the update." Considering that they've already reached out to jailbreaker extraordinaire Geohot as well, it's clear that Microsoft doesn't believe this is a black-and-white situation -- the ChevronWP7 guys seem to think homebrew has a place somewhere in the platform's future, it just remains to be seen how that's going to play out.

This has been a hot topic of discussion, as the iPad 2 should be coming shortly, and many of us are wondering if there will be an upgraded screen resolution. PC World has been reporting on the topic and says that IDC analyst, Tom Mainelli, commented that Apple will indeed bring Retina displays to the iPad, but not until about 2012, meaning that this would be possibly for the 3rd Generation iPad and not the iPad 2.
Quote:
"I think the Digitimes story probably got the resolution right, but the iPad version wrong," Mainelli told PCWorld via e-mail. "Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3.

A newly discovered Apple patent suggests Apple may be looking at ways to implement multi-touch interfaces without a touchscreen. MacRumors uncovered the application, which describes Kinect-like technology that would allow users to point and make gestures in the air above the keyboard, just as they would on a trackpad.
The patent application, entitled "Image Processing for Camera Based Motion Tracking," notes that the keyboard is still the preferred way of entering data into a computer.

On Monday, China's Commercial Times reported that Apple will begin to mass produce the fifth-generation iPhone in May, ahead of the widely anticipated annual June or July roll out of the next-gen Apple smartphone. According to the report, Apple's overseas partners are already gearing up for a massive production schedule that will likely turn out the largest batch of iPhones for a new generation launch.
Ahead of the iPhone 5 production, the Commercial Times noted that iPad 2 production will begin in just weeks as a "small pilot" program. In March, production of the second generation tablet will swing into full gear, placing the iPad 2 on pace for the widely expected April launch. As anticipated, Foxconn will lead the production charge, remaining Apple's largest manufacturing partner, although suppliers - including Pegatron - will play increasingly bigger roles in the forthcoming mass productions.

Last week Google took a page from Apple's book and pulled the Arcade by Kongregate app from the Android Market for violating its terms of service. In particular, the part that forbids distributing 'any Product whose primary purpose is to facilitate the distribution of Products outside of the Market.' As Kongregate's Jim Greer explained to Joystiq, the app is essentially a custom web browser that loads in a Flash game from the mobile version of Kongregate. Plus, it will cache the game so you can play offline. And this may be the feature that got it yanked, speculates Ryan Kim at GigaOm.

Apple still isn't offering much of a hint about an iOS 4.3 release date -- other than a busier than usual beta schedule -- but it looks like we could now be one step closer to a general roll out. What appears to be the first app that takes advantage of some iOS 4.3-specific features has now garnered Apple's approval and turned up in the App Store, which would seem to suggest that there's no more major changes or bugs that need to be ironed out (though that can certainly always change). The app itself is Matthew Gallagher's StreamToMe, which runs $2.99 and now incorporates the AirPlay video support that has come to apps in the a latest revision of the OS -- hit up the source link below to check it out for yourself.

GameStop has submitted a revised version of its Kongregate Arcade app to the Android Market, following the forced removal of the original iteration.
Google had pulled the Arcade from its mobile app store due to stipulations about the hosting of rival download shops on Market.
While Kongregate had disputed the "bizarre" removal, claiming Arcade did constitute an App Store, it has now altered the free game hub in an attempt to satisfy Google.
Kongregate Arcade now runs all its games within a browser, storing games in that browser's cache rather than saving them as their own entities on the phone.
The app is currently available on Android Market, though whether it remains there depends on Google's decision.

So we've just installed Google's first public-access preview of its tablet-focused Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, an early build of the platform's SDK that features "non-final" code and APIs; it's intended primarily for developers who want to get a head start on making their tablet app dreams come true, but naturally, we needed to install it and take it for a test drive ourselves. Here are our quick observations:
Like Android SDK emulators before it, Honeycomb's is extremely slow -- nearly to the point of uselessness in this case. We'll give them a mulligan since this is a preview build, but seriously, we wouldn't recommend installing this unless you enjoy pulling your hair out.
There appears to be some sort of orientation bug that prevents us from going landscape, which is what we really wanted. Sorry about that! We've shot the video sideways and rotated all of our images; if we're able to figure it out or a newer build is released with orientation properly working, we'll update.
The browser looks great -- specifically the UI, which is going to make desktop browser users feel right at home perhaps more than any other tablet browsing experience to date. As with the rest of the emulator, it was too slow to really use -- and it kept crashing on us -- but we're digging the look.
The system for adding and managing widgets is a joy to use -- it makes your entire desktop accessible from a single screen, and we like the amount of detail you can preview for each widget before deciding whether to use it and where to place it.
In general, the window animations and screen transitions seem cool, but none were smooth or fast enough in the emulator to know for sure. Jury's still out until this gets faster or we're using Honeycomb on actual tablets.
We're not in love with the dim, squashed segmented display that Google is using for the time in the lower right; we're hoping there are plenty of alternative fonts available.
Since the emulator doesn't provide a "Google experience" build with access to the Android Market, Gmail, or other "branded" Google apps, we weren't able to deep-dive on how real-world applications are going to look on the platform -- but with any luck, Motorola's Xoom should be shipping within a few weeks. In the meantime, check out a video after the break!

Microsoft just dropped a few tidbits of knowledge on us regarding Windows Phone 7's performance in the marketplace so far. Here's what we've got:
'Early research' says 93 percent of WP7 customers are 'satisfied' and 90 percent would recommend the platform to others. We don't know details about the research, though -- number of customers polled, time frame, so on.
Average of 100 new apps in the Marketplace per day, and over 6,500 total are available right now.
Most importantly, "over 2 million" licenses have been sold to OEMs around the world.
What does that tell us? Well, let's get the elephant in the room out of the way: the iPhone 4 sold 3 million units in a little under a month after its launch, so Microsoft clearly has plenty of room to catch up -- but that comes as no surprise to us, analysts, or Microsoft itself. Furthermore, selling a license to an OEM isn't the same as selling a phone to a customer, since many of these manufactured devices are sitting on store shelves; it's unclear exactly how many WP7 devices are actually in users' pockets right now, but the number is certainly less than "over 2 million."
Microsoft's earnings call is tomorrow where we expect to get more detail on the platform's performance, but the company is saying today that it sees plenty of reasons to be "bullish about the foundation for long-term success" here -- and considering that they simply can't afford to fail in the mobile game, we hope they're right.

Although gloves customized for use with touchscreen devices are nothing new, there's something quite "magical" about what could become the most popular high tactile gloves on the market. At least, that's what Apple is probably hoping for.
According to our friends at Patently Apple, the folks in Cupertino have won a patent for a new "Magic Glove System," the design for which also surfaced this week at the US Patent and Trademark Office. If you're curious as to how these gloves will improve upon those currently available on the market, that much isn't yet clear. Although since the word "magic" is involved, these must be superior to the competition, right?

Sony has announced PlayStation Suite, a new service which will deliver classic PSone content to Android smartphone devices.
Speaking at a press event in Tokyo, Sony boss Kaz Hirai promised that the service, which launches later this year, will bring "Legendary original PlayStation content" to mobiles. No specific titles were announced, but a snowboarding game was briefly demoed, with a virtual D-pad and buttons clearly displayed on the phone screen.
A service called PlayStation Certified will help developers with testing and quality assurance.
Hirai promised a "hardware-neutral game framework" that enables "PlayStation-quality" content to made for all kinds of mobile hardware.
"We envision PlayStation Suite as an initiative that is essential to the world of portable entertainment," he insisted.
We'll have more information on this story as it develops.

The description in Software Update may only say that it brings a "number of important stability and performance improvements," but Apple's just-released iTunes 10.1.2 update also adds another fairly important feature: support for the Verizon iPhone 4. That detail is tucked away in the "before you install" document included when you download iTunes from Apple's website (rather than Software Update), and actually only refers to the "iPhone 4 (CDMA model)," which you can read into what you will.

Digitimes is reporting on the possibility of the iPhone 5 touting a dual-core processor. Not much of a surprise, considering that the new Android devices will be sporting such chips, and I don't see Apple falling short for competition. This means better gaming and video experiences, as well as a nice speed increase. We should see this migrate over well to the iPad 2, so we can expect to see upgrades on both devices.
With strong competition coming from Google devices, and other smartphones, Apple sounds like they are ready to up the competition once again. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in the USA about June or July, (same months that iPhone 4 debuted last year), however it seems as though most of this ETA is mostly based on rumors, but then again, the iPhone 5 is a rumor all together.
Can we expect dual-core processors? Probably. Can we expect the iPhone 5 this year?

Sony's US president Jack Tretton has explained some of the thinking behind the PlayStation Suite - the new software offering for Android smartphones and tablets, revealed yesterday at the PlayStation Meeting in Tokyo.
He admitted that it was important to acknowledge the massive growth and success in the smartphone market with devices from Google and Apple, and Sony would be wasting the PlayStation heritage if it were to ignore the market entirely.
"We've always been about, what is the market? What is the opportunity? Seize the opportunity and differentiate yourself," Tretton told Engadget.
"To sit there and stick your head in the sand and say, 'smartphones are irrelevant, there are no other gaming mediums,' I think would be foolish, and it would be a disadvantage for us, because we have all these great games. We have this great gaming heritage."
"If you truly believe in your brand and you truly believe in your technology, expose yourself to as many consumers as possible, so hopefully PlayStation Suite introduces people to the PlayStation brand and ultimately they follow the breadcrumbs back to NGP and to our other devices. We've got this huge library of PlayStation One games that are tremendous games, especially when compared to a lot of the other stuff you're seeing on smartphones. That already sets the bar very, very, high."
By releasing original PlayStation games on a PlayStation Store - accessible on multiple handsets - Sony hopes to raise the bar for gaming experiences, despite the age of the software.
"The PSOne games are already state-of-the-art compared to what a number of consumers get with that type of investment on a smartphone," offered Tretton. "It's gonna set a level that'll force other games to measure themselves against, in terms of what they can economically justify.
"I would stack a lot of those PSOne experiences very fairly against what people are spending good money on [with smartphone titles], and I think it is a buyer beware market because there's no standard. Anybody puts anything out they want out on a smartphone and you don't know what you get until you buy it. I hope with the credibility of the PlayStation Suite, there'll be an expectation that we can execute against in terms of quality."
And the PlayStation Suite could be another entry level for budding design talent, according to Tretton, following opportunities though the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Minis.
"Now with things like the PlayStation Network and smaller digital games, you've really got a great breeding ground for development and we've reaped great dividends, and not only great content but great developers that have gone on to do bigger and better games, and we never would've gotten the opportunity to know them if it wasn't for things like Minis and PlayStation Network. So I think PlayStation Suite expands that even more."

Thought Honeycomb was just for tablets? Well, it's not! Sure, tablets might be Google's main thrust with the release, but we've been able to dig up enough evidence in the preview SDK's emulator released yesterday to suggest that these guys are still keeping their eyes on the smartphone prize.
Here's how it works: the emulator can be set to load at an arbitrary screen resolution. By default, that's WXGA, 1280 x 768 -- perfect for tablets, but obviously a wee bit large for even the biggest smartphones. Well, it turns out that setting the emulator to WVGA (like you might find on a modern mid- to high-end smartphone) triggers a moderately different shell UI that lacks most of the whiz-bang home screen stuff Google's shown on the Honeycomb tablets. In fact, the default launcher crashes out entirely, which means you need to install a replacement (Launcher Pro works nicely) just to play around.
Once you get in, it's pretty raw, but you immediately notice that the emulator's got some traces of smartphone support. Notably, the status bar reverts to a more smartphone-friendly form, albeit one with pre-Gingerbread background coloration and incorrectly-inverted font colors. The lock screen (pictured above) is back to its old form, not the webOS-esque circular lock in the Honeycomb tablet UI. The browser -- which has been completely revamped in Honeycomb -- works, though without visible tabs; Google might be thinking that they'd take up too much real estate on a screen this small.
Again, you can't glean much here, but it's interesting primarily because the emulator knows to revert to a smartphone UI layout at the lower resolution -- a possible sign that Honeycomb will be a true dual-mode, dual-purpose platform from day one. And even if it isn't, it looks like they're setting themselves up for a two-UI strategy down the road.

A couple of new job listings on Apple's website are firming up rumors that Apple will be including so-called "e-wallet" capabilities using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology on upcoming iOS devices. The positions - for a Hardware Test Engineer and a Manager of Global Payment Platforms - indicate that development on both the technical and business aspects is near completion.
As Nick reported on Tuesday, there's growing evidence that Apple is working on a PayPal-like service that would use radio-frequency identifier (RFID) chips built into iOS devices to allow them to act as electronic wallets: you would just wave your iPhone at a reader, and money would be immediately transferred out of...

A researcher at North Carolina State University has discovered yet another Android Browser exploit that affects the new Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and previous versions. Slashdot recently covered a previous browser exploit that affected all versions of the Android Browser, but was patched in 2.3. Xuxian Jiang writes 'our finding here is that the patch contained in Android 2.3 is not an ultimate fix and can still be bypassed. We have a proof-of-concept exploit with a stock Nexus S phone and are able to successfully exploit the vulnerability to steal potentially personal information from the phone.' The exploit is capable of reading and writing files from an Android's sdcard or system partition as well as uploading user data over the internet.
