The ScummVM Team has released a new version of ScummVM for tons of consoles and Operating Systems,
Heres the release details:
We can call it a tremendous development. Half a year since 0.11.1 passed pretty quickly, and we are pleased to announce the release of 0.12.0!
This new version of ScummVM adds support for 5 completely new games. The games that now run smoothly on many more platforms than was initially intended are: The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Two: Hand of Fate, The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three: Malcolm's Revenge, Lost in Time, The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble and Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back.
The number of supported platforms grew as well. The PS2 port has been revived, and the GameCube and Wii are now supported too. Take your Wiimote and make your beloved adventure game protagonist run around the screen .
For those new to ScummVM heres a description:
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.
Heres the release notes:

It appears the software giant expects to launch an applications store called Skymarket this fall for its Windows Mobile platform, if a recent job posting spotted by Long Zheng at Istartedsomething.com is accurate. According to the ad posted Sunday on Computerjob.com, the Skymarket senior product manager will head a team that will "drive the launch of a v1 marketplace service for Windows Mobile."
There is a link to the job posting in the article if you are interested. It is great to see Microsoft doing this, but it seems once again it took Apple to do it first and show that it really can help drive the market. Any bets MS has something along the lines of a MobileME in the works, but one that works correctly of course.

Music Week is reporting that when Snow Patrol debuts their new album A Hundred Million Suns late next month, according to their label's product manager, it'll launch on iTunes with Apple's next (presumably) killer app for the iPhone and iPod touch (Remote being the first): an interactive album application that'll deliver lyrics, artwork, behind-the-music photos and other bonus content.

Apple/AT&T customer William Gillis was unhappy with the performance of his iPhone 3G. So he filed a lawsuit. But what's unique in this case is that the lawsuit isn't complaining just that the iPhone 3G is underperforming, but that the iPhone 3G is underperforming because it's been consciously oversold in a plot by AT&T and Apple.

The JoyPod, rumored to be the first venture into iPhone game pads by a major player in the accessory industry (Belkin), turns out to be a fake. The original article came from a site called TouchArcade, and it looks like they've taken us all for a late April Fools. After sleuthing just a tad, we received this email from Belkin:
Quote:
Hi Cody,
Thanks for the email! The "JoyPod" is as much of a surprise to you as it is to us! The "JoyPod" is not a Belkin product,

Remember when MMS finally reached Jailbroken iPhones via SwirlyMMS back in December adding MMS receiving support in March? Great news! SwirlyMMS is nearly ready for iPhones running 2.x firmware!
From SwirlyMMS:
"Dear Swirly Users,
We know that many of you are wondering what is going on with the so much sought after release for firmware 2.x. We have been working really hard lately and today we were able to send and receive the first MMSs between different devices running firmware 2.x on iPhone 3G and 2G!
Of course, you are all wondering when will this be made public? It is hard to say, and you all know how bad I am at making guesstimates... There are a few issues left, not major ones, but still issues, until we can make an official 1.2 release for the 2.x firmware. So lets say maybe two weeks from now. Maybe, maybe...
Stay tuned!
Greetings from the SwirlySpace team,

When last.fm released their application for the App Store, many people were disappointed. There was no searching, there was no scrobbling, and you could only play your recommendations. But someone apparently got their hands on the newest version of their software for iPhone. It adds the ability to search, play music from other people's profiles, love, or hate, songs, and much more.

As the root of our name implies, desktop browsers aren't really our thing in Engadget-land. Still, we're pretty sure that you've managed to learn about Google's new Chrome browser even without our assistance. However, when we hear Google's co-founder, Sergey Brin discussing Chrome on Android, well, we're all in. Even though neither has been released out of beta yet, Brin said that the Webkit-based Chrome browser is expected to soon supplant the Webkit-based browser in Android. "Probably a subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack," Brin said before adding, "My guess is we'll have 'Chrome-like' or something similar," when asked about the brand name. While we have lingering doubts about the likely stability of the initial 1.0 Android OS release, version 2.0 with Chrome is likely to be killer in every sense of the word to Symbian Nokia, Microsoft, and Apple. Of course, we'll be first in line for the HTC Dream regardless.

Hey, what's one more leaked OEM/ODM image of the iPod nano 4G between friends. While usually we'd be highly suspect of an image like this from Alibaba.com (peddlers of the Mac G6), the stars have certainly aligned around the next-generation iPod nano form factor show beneath the "Screen Guard for iPod Nano 4th Gen." Besides, it's the first clean render we've seen from below. Five more days and we'll know for sure.

Logically speaking, it shouldn't be a huge surprise. But a friend in the industry told us that they've seen H.264 1080P video playing on the iPhone, quite a few times, with no problems at all. Of course, the resolution is absurd overkill for the system's screen, but what's this mean in light of the purported iTunes 8 HD? Potentially a lot.

I knew the iPhone was powerful, but I had know idea it contained the sort of mystical energies needed to call for one of the Great Old ones. Mobile content developer Digital Jokers have just creating content for the Apple device, and their first effort shall be summoning the living embodiment of terror and madness in the form of Call of Cthulu: Darkness Within. It's exactly the sort of point and click adventure that the iPhone needs to help important, on-the-go people look like they're still on-the-go when they're actually just goofing off with the elder gods.
The company will be demoing the game later this month. In the meantime, here are the first, oddly non-threatening screens.

I'm pleased to announce that a new open source sample application—called Photostream—has been added to the apps-for-android project. Photostream is a simple photos browser and viewer for Flickr. All you need to use it is a Flickr screen name or user name (the application offers a default user name if you just want to try it.)

It's still not even a week since I bought a new iPhone 3G and during this time my brother and I did a lot of cool stuff. The iPhone with its accelerometer and multitouch display is ideal for making gadgets. When I got it home, we started thinking about some cool demos which we could make. Incidentally we found an old R/C car model ;-) Have you ever seen anything like this? I hadn't :-) Did you ever think that an iPhone could do this? Enjoy!

EA has announced that nine new titles are currently in development for the iPhone: Yahtzee Adventures, EA Mini Golf, Lemonade Tycoon, Mahjong, Monopoly: Here & Now The World Edition, SimCity, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 09, Need for Speed Undercover, and The Sims 3. Many of these titles have been mentioned before, but I was pretty pumped to hear about SimCity and the Sims 3 being added to the list. EA has also revealed that they are shooting to release Spore Origins on September 7th—the same day it is released on the Mac and PC.

There are already a few home automation iPhone apps in the store, but here at CEDIA it's clear that all of the home automation heavies have definitely discovered the obvious: the iPhone makes for a great universal touchscreen remote for everything from your AC to your living room blinds to your music collection. And most of them won't make you pay the price of a snazzy dedicated touchscreen controller to get it, either. Most of them

here you have it, more supposed iPod nano 4G love, unboxed and wearing a distinctive iPod nano 2G lime-colored coat. Must be cold in the house that fruit built from all these leaks.
Update: As noted in the comments, that 2G-style coloring is matched with an old-style squeeze-connector iPod cable, making this leak, at least, highly suspect.

Hi all,
this is mainly an auto locking program which utilizes the Windows Locking for partial locking (phone related keys are active)
or complete locking (no keys are active).
It can be considered as an add-on to other programs which provide the User Interface, an 'In Call Locker'
with some goodies as mentioned later on which may or not depend on whether the device is locked (with any program that uses
the Windows locking).
The locking can be activated at the following events:
1. After a specified period of idle time (no screen tapping or touching the keyboard).
2. After the device has waken up.
3. During a call ("In-Call Locking" Partial or Full).
Log:
06/09 - v3.29 - Added option for Power off, Stylusout unlock, display message (+Fixes of course).

Ok not clock stopping news here but enough to warrant you to stop and read this bit of news just in.
With the rumors of the Gizmondo 1.5 swimming round the aspect of battery life is still a key objection. this however in an unsuspecting move has been addressed with this comment from Carl Freer.
We know the Gizmondo’s standard battery was no good hence the need for the premium battery but please read on.
“We understand that there was an issue with the batteries in the original Gizmondo units. Frankly, they never worked very well. Part of this was due to the physical battery used, the other was the power management module in the OS.
We now have a MUCH enhanced solution for the battery issue (including a new model battery) that we will be offering in the new Gizmondo units. Additionally, we will to offer a new battery to current Gizmondo owners as part of the upgrade process. This program will be available FREE OF CHARGE and will be a part of the relaunch.
As I mentioned, we are committed to current owners and want to help enhance their experience along with draw new users to Gizmondo.”
Now to read that on first impression would be wow! Indeed great commitment to the early adopters and possibly very risky financially but if we read into this, there might be some form of exchange old batteries for new? What lies on the horizon for the Gizmondo surely must be big as this is merely a spec of what’s to come

We set our moderation and staff team loose on Carl to see what they could draw out of him this time.
The following are our questions and as usual Carl’s answers are quoted below.
Do you plan to harness or upgrade the GPS in current Gizmondo’s or new Gizmondo’s i.e.: Will you approach ALK again with CoPilot, look at other companies?
Yes, we want to upgrade the GPS in the new release. We are currently looking for a GPS partner.
Will we be seeing an improved GPS chip such as the SIRF 3 found in modern GPS units?
A new GPS chip will be included into the new version of the Giz
Will the Gizmondo Servers be back? Such as the Location based, where am I, or where is my nearest, services?
We are currently building out a worldwide server farm to minimize load times for users regardless of where they are located.
What is going to happen to SmartAds? Will we see it returning to the Gizmondo?
No
Will there be additional support for audio and video files on the Gizmondo such as the widely used Divx and Xvid?
We are discussing support for Xvid but currently the audio/video formats we are planning are the ones built in to the Windows Moble Media Player which include MP3 & WMA for audio and WMV and MPEG for video. Thus far, we have not discussed support for Divx.
Will the updated Gizmondo have WIFI or 3g capabilities?
The updated Gizmondo will have WIFI. We’ve looked at 3g but the 3g boards are really expensive to add and would put the Giz outside the pricepoint we are trying to stay within. We are looking at a external USB device that could be plugged into the Giz to provide 3g capabilities.
With the change in user interface will you be using the astonishing tribe http://www.tat.se again?
Yes, we are upgrading the UI and are handling the entire redesign in house. We took a TON of feedback from Gizmondo users.
What support will you be giving to operating systems such as driver support? Last time we were stuck with using windows 98-XP will there be Mac, Linux and Windows Vista support?
The new Giz will be on Windows mobile, so there will be Vista support. Not sure yet on Mac or Linux versions yet. We are also looking at an Android version as well.
Will Gizmondo be producing its own software for purchase? Can you divulge any ideas or projects you have going?
Yes, we will be producing non-game titles. We will be happy to provide you with detail on any of our applications as they get closer to launch.
From our development community
Can you elaborate on what support you will be providing for developers and programs you will be initiating to draw them in before releasing to the public? The development guys really need specific details on this as soon as possible.
We will provide a very comprehensive SDK, free access to a new device for registered developers for testing. There will be a revenue share program for new titles as well as for Gizmondo peripherals. We are also going to launch a small venture fund for promising technologies/applications developed for the Gizmondo. We have been approached by several educational institutions who want to use the Giz for lifestyle testing, as a universal remote etc. As we said before, we are committed to developing the Giz as a platform and we want to encourage these creative ideas.
The last Gizmondo lacked any extra incentives for developers, thus its homebrew community was also diminished. Are there any extra incentives or programs for developers this time round?
There will be a chance for revenue share on any application built for the Gizmondo and sold/distributed through the website. We also have other marketing partners that have indicated they will want to partner with members in the development community.
Will developers be able to buy the Gizmondo 2.0 before the public release (Dev Unit), so that they can produce content for the community in time for the actual launch?
Yes. We will have dev units and the SDK available early in 3rd quarter.
Will there be any difference in a Developer Unit & a Normal Unit (or any other units for that matter)?
No, there won’t be a difference between the units. All units will come unlocked.
Will there be any other specific resources to help developers get started developing with the Gizmondo 2.0 (e.g. SDK, Documentation, Forums/Developer Network…)?
Yes, we will offer all of these…SDK, Documentation, Forums/Developer Network.
Prospects of Android sound interesting though it would defiantly push the Gizmondo into a future market with the boom on that platform imminent a lot of money is being invested into android and Gizmondo backing it would mean we could get our hands on a first gaming android device.

Ars Technica is now backtracking from its initial prediction that iTunes 8 won't be a hit in Apple's Let's Rock September 9 event. Not only iTunes 8 will be available then, but they say Apple will also release the iPhone 2.1 update that in theory will fix its huge password security flaw. Jacqui hints that the 2.1 update will have new secret features that are absent from the beta. Repeat with me: COPY PASTE COPY PASTE COPY PASTE. And fix the bloody thing.

dTunes, a new app by Richard Shearman, lets you grab all the free music you'd like, downloaded straight to your iPhone using some magic to combine SeeQPod's streaming .mp3 service and Jonathan Misurda's useful Safari Download Plugin.
Download dTunes (available via Cydia now on the MMi repo), and once installed, tap the magnifying glass or the Search Seeqpod button. dTunes will bring up a window with Seeqpod in it - simply search for the music you'd like, and when found, tap the song.

We don't have any idea where this information came from, but the Telegraph is reporting today that the HTC Dream will launch on T-Mobile UK sometime in November. That's the same time frame we've heard before, and it certainly seems like El Goog's first Android phone is close to its debut, so it's definitely plausible, but we'd still take this one with a grain of salt -- even though we want this thing yesterday.

New for pocket pc:
I am glad to present a game I developed myself for the Windows Mobile platform (a version for PC also exists).
What's "Guess It!" ?
"Guess it!" is an intellectual word game with high-quality QVGA & VGA graphics, offering you hundreds of hours of pure gameplay.
Guess It! has two modes : arcade mode with more than 30 levels, and quick game mode. Both modes ensure you get hundreds of hours of pure gameplay.
Moreover, the game features 3 mentors to make it more enjoyable, more defying, and long-living!
Despite high-quality graphics and sound, Guess It! remains lightweight and should run on merely any Pocket PC. It can also be installed on a storage card.

Its still not showing the app in AppStore, but if you use the above link it will open in iTunes and let you purchase it from there - then just sync to your iPhone!

Ever since I got my iPhone, I have been struck with the difficulty that while my RAZR V3t had a very useful AIM app that handled messages by SMS, my iPhone was dumbfounded by the idea of instant messaging on a cell phone. Now that the app store is available, people are turning to apps such as AIM, MobileChat, and several others to get their IMing fix, however, these apps are quite glitchy concerning staying logged in, receiving messages while not using the program, etc. Until a fully stable solution is unveiled including notification of IMs, stable log-in, and an interface that doesn't look and feel like it was tossed together, I will stick with my solution: AIM TXT.
Right off the bat, if you use IM services other than AIM or have few text messages per month, you can probably overlook this.
Here's how it works: you send a text to 246246 (AIMAIM), then give them your screen name and password. They log you in and give you a list of options, to which you reply with a number (e.g. 7 is buddy list). You can call up your current online buddies, send IMs, change your status, go away, go invisible, and almost anything other basic AIM functions.
Here's a few pros and cons to choosing this over the apps.
Pros:
-Notification. This is a BIGGIE for me. Since AIM TXT works over SMS, it informs you as if it was a text message. No matter what app you're using, or even if your phone is asleep, you will be informed of the IM.
-Login stability. Your login is entirely on the server end, so you can ignore it for as long as you want, respring, or restart and you will be logged in until you send 246246 the word "logout."
-Familiar interface. Obviously, since it runs through SMS, everything looks and sounds exactly as if you were texting someone.
-No data plan needed. Running on T-Mobile without T-Zones and don't have a way to access the internet? That's not a problem since the service is all SMS-based.
Cons:
-Uses up texts--fast. Although this may not be a worry if you are lucky enough to have an unlimited messaging plan (like me), this method will suck up your available text messages fast if you are a moderate to heavy user (like me) and can't stand to be away from AIM for a moment (like me).
-No GUI. Unfortunately, starting an IM conversation isn't as simple as tapping a screen name and typing. Instead, you have to send an SMS to 246246 saying "send *screenname* *message*" to start a conversation, but after it is started, replies work just as they do with normal texts.
-Extra text gets annoying. You'll most likely start to get annoyed with the "(You can reply to this message)" after EVERY...SINGLE...MESSAGE...or even the repetitive screen name in every SMS as well.

While the first iPhone games were announced earlier this year, today's Let's Rock event from Apple seems to have sharply defined gaming as a major focus for the mobile device. Hell, gaming is now listed as one of the main selling points of the new iPod Touch, but the biggest proof came today during the event, after Jobs had finished showing off Need for Speed Undercover and the new on-screen d-pad from Gameloft.
"Now you can make a pretty good argument that it is the best portable device for playing games on - and a whole new class of games"
You could make that argument, sure. I'd daresay Nintendo, Sony, and sales figures might have something to say about it as well, but feel free to make that argument all you want. Me? I'm still waiting for my Zune to blossom into a powerful gaming machine. *pokes Zune with stick and sighs*

During today's Apple Let's Rock Event Gizmodo got a look at Gameloft's new soccer game: Real Soccer 2009. The graphics look fairly impressive though I have my doubts about ease of play.
The main reason I think the game may not do well is because it relies on a D-Pad and A and B buttons overlaid on top of the screen. I already have enough trouble guiding Frogger around with my chubby fingers, using two hands on the screen's gotta be problematic. But hey, it looks nice.
The game is already out on the App Story for $10, so I'll give it a try and write up something a bit later in the week.

By way of Gizmodo and their Live Blog of the Apple Let's Rock Event comes word that Need for Speed: Undercover is heading to the iPhone .
The game will allow you to customize your car, deliver packages cross town and, I assume, race people. Sadly the iPhone version will be lacking sexy, as they've not included Maggie Q. Dammit, I've always wanted her in my pocket too.
The game is due out to the iPhone and iTouch in November.
P.s. I know it's not iTouch, but I just can't help myself.

The new iPods are out—and quite frankly, awesome. But if you like the previous lineup just fine, Apple is intently clearing stock on refurbished models, dropping prices further than they have been for the last few weeks. The iPod touches are the best deals of the lot with up to 41 percent off their original prices, or a 20 percent savings vs. the new touches revealed today: A 16GB old school iPod touch is $240, or a 32GB model is $320.

The most noticeable thing about the second-gen iPod touch is just how thin it feels in your hand. The tapered edges make it feel like last year's iPod Nano, and it isn't as heavy or dense feeling as the 1g iPod touch. As Jobs stated in the keynote, the built-in speaker really is for casual listening, as it's not loud enough to cut through the crowds here. But when held to the ear, it sounds decent enough for what it is.

The new, thinner and smaller iPod nano really is smaller, thinner, and feels much better in your hand. Brian, our hand model, has small hands, so you can see how relatively small the unit is. The aluminum is slick, but the clickwheel might be slightly too slick, and not as grippy as previous models. The UI though, is fast and responsive—maybe even more so than the previous fat nano generation. The scrolling album art on the main menu is at the bottom, and not on the sides like before.

We were hoping for it, and it looks as though will actually get the iPhone 2.1 update on Friday. Word is that the free update will "fix a lot of bugs." Expect less call drops, crashes, better battery life, and a faster sync (thank God). Still no copy and paste though. Bumnmer. UPDATE: Current iPod touch owners will have to spend $10 to get the 2.1 software via iTunes—unless you purchased 2.0. For those users it is a free update. It is also included free with the purchase of a new unit.

To go with the Skittles smorgasbord of new iPod nanos, Apple's got a bunch of new accessories. By far the most exciting are their new premium in-ear headphones. They've got dual drivers (woofer + tweeter), a setup you don't see until about the $200 mark with say, Ultimate Ears' Super.fi 5 Pro or Shure's E4c-n set, which used to be over $300. And these have got a built-in remote and mic. Yet they're only $79. The first iPod earbuds that don't suck—amazing. Not so amazing: It appears that their remote and mic only work with the iPods launched today.

The iPod classic looks like it's getting the runt's end of the "Let's Rock" magic wand today—with boosted storage to 120GB for $250, up from 80GB for the same price. And it's death for the 160GB thickie, matching the Zune's lineup to a tee. Same form factor and colors as last time. Now, the largest iPod money can buy has been downgraded by 40GB—seem like a strange move to backtrack like this to anyone else?

After eons of offering only movies in HD, the iTunes store is at last selling TV shows the way they're meant to be watched. Starting today, you can buy HD episodes of TV shows for $2.99. NBC and Apple have kissed and made up as well—Monk, The Office, Battlestar Galactica, 30 Rock, Heroes are all back, and yes, you can watch Sylar cut heads open in HD. All the details on NBC's homecoming:

Cycling and listening to an iPod can be pretty dangerous as the music masks the road sounds, and fiddling with the controls can have you veering all over place: iBikeConsole is designed to help with some of that. It's a handlebar iPod nano mount that houses your PMP in a shock and rain-proof case, and comes with remote controls you mount near to the grip locations so you don't have to move your hands far. Neat... and it even functions as a bike computer, tracking your ride time, speed and distance and so on. Available now for $76

As expected, Apple just updated the iPod touch with a new thinner stainless steel case -- it's still got the same display. There's now hardware volume controls (hooray!) and a built-in speaker, and a Nike+ receiver is also built in, so you just need the shoe transmitter. On the software side, the UI has been tweaked and the new iTunes Genius features have been added, and the App Store is now included (obviously). Battery life is decent at 36 hours of music and 6 hours of video, and Apple's doing the same "environmentally sound" design thing it did with the new nano. Three price points: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399. So much for that rumored price drop below the iPhone's $199 price point, but we won't complain too much about a $100 price drop.

Apple's decision to transition from the fat third-generation iPod nano to the new svelte fourth-generation iPod nano must have been an easy one. The latest version has the same size screen (just rotated vertically) and the same video support as before, but adds a much more comfortable (sorta) oval shape, a curved screen, an accelerometer, a 16GB version and most importantly, a much improved user interface that aims to solve some of the limitations the Clickwheel has compared to the iPod Touch and iPhone UIs. This evolution succeeds beautifully.

Nice article from Popular Mechanics
As we expected, Apple's "Let's Rock" event yesterday offered some new iPods and a new version of iTunes—even if the unveiling didn't quite meet our expectations. But Steve Jobs and Co. had something else to deliver as well: a clear message that his company now has its sights set directly on the portable gaming market, with very real and very high aspirations for App Store games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Jobs even showed off a new ad touting the new iPod Touch as the "funnest" iPod ever.
Apple's mobile gaming goals go far beyond fancy new versions of Bejeweled and Tetris—Jobs yesterday called for "a whole new class of games." It's now clear that the company is gunning for the big boys: Nintendo and Sony, whose DS and PSP platforms, respectively, have dominated the portable video-game market for years. Here's why the old giants should be scared of the new kid on the block—and why they shouldn't.
3 Reasons Nintendo and Sony Are Running Scared:
1. Buying iPhone/iPod Games Is Quick and Simple
Because games can be purchased directly on your iPhone or iPod Touch via Wi-Fi or the phone's 3G network, it's easy to overdo it. Psychologically, pressing "Install" just isn't the same as plopping down a few bills at your local GameStop, so a spend-happy gamer may be likely to buy three or four games in a binge. And because iPhone and iPod users can buy games anytime, anywhere, they never have to worry about stock shortages—or ever getting up from their couch.
2. iPod Games Are Cheap, and Increasingly High-Profile
Very, very few iPhone/iPod games cost more than $10. Meanwhile, very few Nintendo DS or PSP games cost less than $25. And while the DS and PSP games are usually big-budget affairs that dwarf a simple iPhone Sudoku application, this gap is rapidly closing as high-profile developers increasingly port big games such as Spore and Need For Speed to the iPhone and iPod.
3. iPod Games Can Be Expanded and Updated
It's almost inevitable that a big game will have a few bugs or glitches that aren't discovered until after launch. There's usually little Nintendo DS and PSP players can do other than grin and deal with the glitchy gameplay. But iPod games can be tuned to check for updates and heal themselves whenever bugs are found. The iPhone 3G makes it especially easy for developers to deliver expansion packs, adding levels and characters to successful games.
3 Reasons the Gaming Companies Can Sleep Easy ... for Now:
1. iPods Are Touchscreen-Only
In some ways, the absence of a keypad is a boon to innovation when it comes to mobile gaming—it encourages developers to think up creative workarounds using simple tilts and touch gestures. But it's not perfect. This is true for both big, complex games (there's a reason the touchscreen DS also has a full keypad), and with the retro/classic gaming that mobile platforms traditionally excel at (we'll never get used to tilting our phone to manipulate Tetris blocks, and Space Invaders just isn't the same if you can't properly mash your fingers against buttons). Finally, buttons are still far more precise than Apple's accelerometer.
2. Parents Won't Buy iPhones For Their Kids
The Nintendo DS costs just $129. The PSP? $169. These relatively low prices make them very attractive to parents out shopping for an electronic babysitter. Not only do the iPhone and iPod Touch cost considerably more, but they simply aren't toys that can be thrown into the hands of young children. They have large, fragile glass touchscreens, no restrictions on Internet browsing and come linked to online stores. To the extent that gaming is for children, Apple hasn't figured out how to corner the market yet.
3. Games for Dedicated Systems are Much Bigger.
It's hard to ignore that even the high-profile iPhone/iPod games are pretty stripped down, usually playing like drawn-out mini-games that rely on one or two touchscreen-, or accelerometer-driven gimmicks. No matter how pretty a game is, if the gameplay just involves tilting the screen left and right, you won't play it for long. Dedicated gaming systems typically feature more complex games with stylistically different levels and elements. On the other hand, too many big applications will just slow the iPod Touch and iPhone down. Lets put it this way: The Grand Theft Auto series soared on the PSP, but will likely never come to the iPhone (and we're not so sure we'd want to play it if it did).
What are your thoughts, personally the biggest threat to DS and PSP in homebrew terms is Pandora but commercialy if they bring the Iphone/ipod touch down to a much lower price then only then will it threaten PSP or DS, your thoughts via comments

We'll tell you that when we first got a chance to handle Apple's latest generation of the iPod touch on Tuesday, our gadget-nerd alarms went clanging like there was a really, really bad fire somewhere. The improvements the company has made in design aren't remarkable, but they are entirely welcome. The new housing is smooth, incredibly thin, and feels like a solid metal brick in your hands. The built-in speaker is a nice addition, as are those volume controls (finally!) -- the screen is incredibly bright (on par with the iPhone 3G), though it also looks like it got the 3G's new color temperature. On the software side, 2.1 is definitely feeling smoother and slicker than previous versions, the Nike+ inclusion is huge if you're a runner, and the implementation is well integrated -- overall, we're leaning towards a thumbs-up on those bug fixes too. Unfortunately, we couldn't seem to get the Genius function working on the device (anyone else having this issue?), though that may be more of a server-side conflict than something funky with the player, as we were getting errors in iTunes when trying to flip the switch. We'll be blowing this out with a full review, but for now you can enjoy the succulent pics in the gallery below!

The long-rumored resurrection of Gizmondo from the ashes of Stefan Eriksson's bisected Ferrari Enzo is near. Near, that is, if you believe Rich Jenkins, CEO of Media Power, the company behind this rebirth. Jenkins recently showed Swedish journalist Hans Sandberg a box full of pre-production gaming handhelds, all looking suspiciously like old, decidedly post-production units. According to Jenkins the changes are all internal, consisting of new graphics hardware from nVidia and an uprated battery (to be offered as a free upgrade to scorned owners of the original). Pricing is still undetermined but Android is confirmed; owners will have to choose either Google's new hotness or Microsoft's decidedly more tepid Windows CE, but can't have both -- unless they buy two. Release is still set for the end of this year via a "really cool website" hitting the intertubes next month.

Although they still rate Apple behind Sony Ericsson, Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Acer... (you get the idea) in its quarterly guide to greener electronics, Greenpeace tossed a bit of love to the boys from Cupertino for the new eco-friendlier iPod nano. In a blog post titled "less toxic iPods rock," Greenpeace praised itself as victorious in its own "Green my Apple campaign" before chiding Apple for not doing more to green all of its products. Hooray, a victory for Greenpeace, shame on you Apple for uh... oh never mind.

While the DevTeam rightly asserts that Apple can't undo the bug exploited by PwnageTool via firmware update alone, it's still subject to the whims of iTunes connectivity. In fact, iTunes 8 seems to detect jailbroken devices jailbreaking attempts and then stomps its feet and refuses to play nice. While the DevTeam says that fixes are in the works, the growing list of useful applications in the AppStore coupled with the global retail availability of the iPhone (and lack of a 3G unlock) makes PwnageTool less and less relevant with each passing day.
Update: The problem seems to occur when you try to restore to an iPwned ipsw from a non-iPwned device. Syncing to an already Pwned device works fine.

So said Jonathan Zdziarski in his O'Reilly webcast today, in which he also demoed a way around the iPhone passcode lock, as promised. To achieve that zoomy minimizing effect every time you press the home button (i.e., every time you finish reading your text messages, emails, web history, contacts—think how many times you press that button), the system takes a full-screen grab and caches it. Which, if you're up to some naughtiness (or your phone gets stolen), isn't something you necessarily want to happen.

We'd heard rumors that the Gizmondo 2 would be running Google's Android OS, and the company has now confirmed it to be true (Windows CE is the other optional OS). Available this winter, the Gizmondo 2 is a lot like the original Gizmondo but has a better battery and newer Nvidia chips inside. You like how we mentioned those other details? You know, like you actually care or something?

After being voluntarily retired from the iTunes App Store, following a call by THQ Wireless, the most useless yet completely obligatory iPhone app—PhoneSaber—is returning to the store as LightSaber Unleashed. The lightsaber simulator will tie in with the new LucasArts's game, including completely new graphics, "dueling music," and characters from the game:

One of the smaller, but still significant announcements yesterday was that NBC was coming back to iTunes and that they'd be one of the channels offering TV shows in high-def—for $2.99. Buried in that, even, is that they'll sell a bunch of older shows for just 99 cents an ep, and offer discounts to Season Pass buyers. Cnet says that "What this means for consumers, however, is that Apple is slowly losing control over pricing of video content at iTunes." Uh, what?

In their teardown of the iPod touch version 2, iFixit found a secret surprise: A Broadcom Bluetooth chipset! Though totally unannounced and not listed on the spec page (Apple says Nike+ doesn't use Bluetooth), the iPod touch's Bluetooth chipset supports 2.1+EDR. We don't know for sure yet if it has A2DP, which would let you use stereo headphones—and be another hardware one-up over the iPhone besides ">the built-in Nike+ functions. We've got our fingers crossed—what else would it be used for? Update: MacRumors notes that Nike+ uses the same 2.4GHz frequency as Bluetooth, so that might be what's going on here.

Solving advanced mathematical problems made easy
PocketCAS is a free interface to the open-source Computer Algebra System giac/xcas.
xcas enables you to quickly solve complex algebraic problems, e.g. symbolic and numeric integration and derivation of non-trivial functions, solving differential equations etc. It has also a huge support for problems of linear algebra, like solving linear equation systems, multiplying and inverting matrices, finding eigenvalues (and eigenvectors, of course) and much more. If you do statistics or number theory, you will like xcas' great functionality in those areas, too!

So, you've gone and updated to that new "big fix" firmware 2.1 -- but is the Kool Aid as delicious as you've been promised? On our end, we're certainly seeing noticeable improvements on lagging keyboards, app switching / opening (particularly with contacts and text messages), moving through menus / scrolling, application installation and iTunes syncing, but has Apple solved the big issue? The software update page boasts of a "decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls," and while that might make you think you'll see the proverbial "more bars in more places" (and you probably do), it's likely related to another change in this update, namely, "improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display."
We know that a lot of you are seeing apparent improvements in signal strength, but is that a matter of updated icons, or a reflection of some crazy voodoo Apple performed on the phone's radio? We're leaning towards the former, but we'd like to hear what you have to say. So what's the deal? Is the iPhone 3G seeing actual reception improvements, or is it just cosmetic? Let us know in the poll here.

Well, that was fast -- iPod touch firmware 2.1 was just released on Tuesday, and the QuickPwn project already has it jailbroken. It's not quite the GUI one-click process it's been in the past, but if you're anxious for a little underground code to go with your Genius playlists, it's not overly complicated. Let us know how it goes, we'll let you know when the iPhone 2.1 jailbreak inevitably hits.
Update: The Dev Team just pinged us to say that this isn't one of their official releases, if that sort of thing matters to you.

Why, this is downright preposterous! How dare the copyright-ignoring, astonishingly uncreative minds of those at Miao copy Apple's latest iPod nano design a full year in advance? They should be implausibly embarrassed by churning out a so-called Cottage MP3 player in 2007, all while the brains at Cupertino sat and pondered how to make its tiny little PMP that much better. This, people, is an outrage. An outrage!

At the Let's Rock event this week, Apple pushed the new iPod touch hard (and iPhone too, obviously) as a viable gaming platform. Steve even went so far as to call it the best portable gaming platform out there. Strong words for DS and PSP fans, but the crop of games popping up in the App Store continues to build steam. This week we'll take a look at games both current and upcoming, as well as some other standout favorites as always. Shall we?
Real Soccer: Real Soccer got a quick play during the Let's Rock event and hit the store this week. For $10 you can play as 198 real teams in 12 different stadiums with FIFA 96-era graphics, all using an on-scree D-pad and A+B button. The other demo at Let's Rock, Need For Speed: Undercover, is still under development and will drop in November. Real Soccer is $10
TouchGrind: Due to be released in October, we got a look this week at Touchgrind, a novel skateboard game which is billing itself as the "first true multitouch game" let's you do tricks and flips with a mini deck, racking up points for combos. From the demo video, it looks pretty great, especially if you were as obsessed with the old Tony Hawk PS1 games as my friends and I were.
Air Sharing: Air Sharing looks like it may be the king so far of the file storage apps—our friends over at Lifehacker gave it a shakedown and liked what they saw. It uses WebDAV to show up as a shared folder on Mac, Windows or Linux systems which allows you to save files to your iPhone's flash memory, and provides a URL for devices on the same network to connect to and download the files to another machine. And best of all, unlike many of the other iPhone file vaults, it's free. Until September 22, that is, so grab it.
Roller Coaster Physics: Really cool idea for an app that records G-forces from your accelerometers and displays the results on a trend line. It's designed to be used to measure exactly how much force is causing your stomach to drop at Six Flags, but I don't see why you couldn't use it in a car or anything else, when you want to monitor G-forces. And it's free.
Civil Aircraft Identification Guide: These guys had me in mind. As an aviation geek I love spotting jets at the airport, but as anyone else who shares my hobby knows, sometimes telling your 737s from you A319s (look for the slanted section of the tail fin on the 37, but still) is tough. Airplane ID gives you top and side views with stats on 40 of the major airliners. Cool stuff. $2
More Games in Brief:
EA's Spore Origins hit the store this Sunday - check out our hands-on video here. $10
Asphalt 4: Elite Racing will be Need For Speed's number one competitor: as it's been camped out on the top ten most popular apps list. This driving sim gives you on-screen D-pad or accelerometer steering, and lets up to four players join in multiplayer games on the same Wi-Fi network. $10
And of course Light Saber Unleashed (formerly Phone Saber). This one isn't a DS killer, but thank God it's back.
And as commenter Marcelo points out, Cro-Mag Rally (Mario Kart for cavemen) is on sale for $2 this week, down from $10. Good deal.
This list is in no way definitive. If you've spotted a great app that hit the store this week, give us a heads up or, better yet, your firsthand impressions in the comments. And for even more apps: see our previous weekly roundups here, and check out our original iPhone App Review Marathon. Have a good long weekend everybody.

I'm sure all of the iPhone owners out there were chomping at the bit to download the 2.1 update when it hit today. After all, it does claim to fix major problems like call drops, crashes, slow syncing and bad battery life. I've been busy, so I haven't had a chance to install it myself—so help me out with this. How are the individual bug fixes working out for you?
Any Dropped Calls?

Previously, when you went to google.com from your phone’s browser and performed a local search, the results were tailored to the last location you entered. Now, using the Gears Geolocation API, Search with My Location approximates your actual location using the same Cell ID technology used by Google maps for mobile. So if you want to find sushi nearby, just type "sushi" and Google will return local business listings around you. If you want to know the forecast, type "weather". If you want to search somewhere else, specify a location in the query like "pizza Kansas City."
On your mobile device, go to www.google.com/m
Click the Location link
Tell it to install Gears. A Windows CE CAB will be downloaded that you need to install.
Soft reset your device when the install is done.
Launch PIE and allow Google Gears access to your browser
It isn't perfect. It thinks I am 13 miles northwest of my present location, which is odd. The tower locator system that the Google Maps tool uses can always get me to within half a mile of my real location, and usually under 1,000 yards. It also isn't on the iGoogle page yet on your device, so you either have to pick the iGoogle personalized page to search from, or the generic Google Mobile page, but not both.
Right now it is limited to the US and UK, and there are a list of unsupported devices, so check the blog post before installing.

Addition released their application iPhoneModem Saturday through the MMi Cydia source. They describe it as "an application for the iPhone that aims at making it really easy to use the iPhone's internet connection on your computer," and they deliver.
A while back, we posted a how to on tethering the iPhone using NateTrue's method - which required some command line knowledge and a few network tweaks on your OS X box. Until now, this was pretty much the easiest way to tether your 3G iPhone (and still is a great method which only takes a few minutes).
iPhoneModem makes tethering a 10 second process. I've been testing it the past few hours, and its incredibly well-designed and functional. For those of you running OS X Leopard (iPhoneModem is actively working on the desktop client for MacOS 10.4 and Microsoft Windows, as well as a 1.x iPhone..

Juice Wireless, Inc, has just released Flutter (iTunes AppStore Link), an AppStore app which (kinda) allows you to send MMS from your iPhone.
The app is definitely still in a beta format, with a bunch of supposed limitations (can only send to folks in your contact book - can't just tap in a number, can't receive MMS, location support is buggy - far off usually, and not everyone seems to be receiving the MMS's), but its up.
However, either the app is a joke, or their servers are much more overloaded than they thought would happen - I have yet to even get the confirmation sms, much less be able to test the app, and its been hours. I will update this post with a more involved review when (if?) it comes through.

I know we all love Pandora but unfortunately its future is in question . New to the AppStore is FlyCast (previously known as FlyTunes) which provides a solid alternative. Now FlyCast doesn't have the "awesome figure out what I want to listen to technology" like Pandora but it holds its own in the iPhone streaming music app department. FlyTunes is more like Sirius except with a lot more channels and some neat features built in.

Now that 2.1's out, your iPhone 3G is finally perfect -- right? Well, that all depends on your definition of "perfect," but odds are you still have a niggle or two poking out from behind that heaping pile of bugs and security flaws that were smoothed over with Cupertino's putty knife in last week's update. Here's a quick look at what we're hearing so far:
Excluding those of you who don't know where you are, our poll on claimed reception improvements in 2.1 suggests that the majority of iPhone 3G owners (by a slim margin) are seeing no improvement or -- gasp! -- a degradation in signal strength since 2.0.2. Given that 2.1 patches up some bugs with third-party apps, it comes as no surprise that a few of 'em are apparently breaking with the new firmware (a disappointment, yes, but not a surprise). It sucks that Apple whacked the ball into developers' courts on this one, and we're hoping for the sake of users and devs alike that it's not going to take many sleepless nights of re-coding and debugging to get the affected apps back on the straight and narrow. We're now hearing some reports of email buffoonery ranging from an inability to add new accounts to 2.1-equipped phones, to failures of existing accounts that had previously worked, to total Exchange breakage. Are you folks seeing anything there? Any corporate types freaking out that they've lost access to their beloved ActiveSync setups? We actually found another bug in 2.1 ourselves: we can't find copy / paste anywhere. It's anyone's guess how that one slipped by the testers.
[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

With firmware 2.1 now out for the iPhone and iPod touch we bring you the inevitable PwnageTool and QuickPwn response. Apparently, the DevTeam took offense to a previous posting where we questioned the relevancy of continued jailbreaks in the age of the AppStore and official, worldwide iPhone distribution.
So, we'll put it to you dear reader: as much as we respect these guys for their gen-1 iPhone unlocking and pre-AppStore era work, is PwnageTool and the ability to jailbreak your phone still as important as it was?
Update: By a three-to-one margin it's clear that you still love your Pwnage! As such, we'll continue to cover the DevTeam's exploits just as obsessively as before.

Check this out this morning. This new iPhone app from the App Store, called XBMC Remote, does just that—it lets you control your XBMC from an iPhone or iPod Touch. The app is pretty open-minded, too. It allows for XBMC control on Windows, Mac and Linux machines. It's yours, if you want it, for $5 (?!) and 0.8MB

Just released yesterday, iPhone Modem for the Cydia jailbreak application repository promises tethering your laptop to your iPhone in just ten seconds. We haven't gotten around to jailbreaking our own yet, but this one is supposedly even easier than the official NetShare tethering app in the official App Store. ModMyiPhone forum says it works just fine on both MacBook and MacBook Pro. Careful using this on AT&T, since too much tethering data usage you're not actively "paying" for will get you neutered.

Typical. A week ago I got an iPhone at the urging of a friend and then, at the urging of the same friend, bought Pangea's Cro-Mag Rally ("I think it has multiplayer. It has this mode called "gather" but I've never been around anyone with the game to try it.") That was $5.99, now it is $1.99, along with a slew of other Pangea games (and the VR Pro utility) available for iPhone and iTouch. Just goes to show, even if you wait a year, you still can't buy anything new from or for an Apple device without seeing its price halved the next week. Full list on the jump. It's a limited time promotion, like the McRib.

New for pocket PC:
Hi all,
this is mainly an auto locking program which utilizes the Windows Locking for partial locking (phone related keys are active)
or complete locking (no keys are active).
Log:
13/09 - v3.30 - Fixes for various issuers reported.

If you thought that AnotherGuest (a.k.a SomeOne) has rested on his laurels and stopped releasing his great free stuff then you were wrong! Starting from the end of August, he simply flooded our discussion forums with his new, fantastic (and, as always, freeware!) ports of classic PC and video games, including:
* Clone Keen - an almost almost complete clone of one of classic DOS games, Commander Keen (episodes 1-3) by ID Software
* Miss Driller - a clone of Mr Driller. Mr. Driller is a series of video games developed by Namco. Mr. Driller puts the player in the role of a driller moving down through screens of blocks, having to keep his air supply from running out while avoiding being squashed by falling blocks.
* Heroes - a kind of Snake game, similar to the "Tron" and "Nibbles". You must maneuver a small vehicle around a world and collect powerups while avoiding obstacles, your opponents' trails, and even your own trail.
* Abuse - port of dark 2D side-scrolling platform game developed by Crack dot Com in 1995. It features beautiful lighting, realistic animation and nasty alien-like creatures to destroy.
* Stratagus - free cross-platform real-time strategy gaming engine. The engine is configurable and can be used to create games with a wide-range of features specific to your needs.
* C-Dogs - the sequel to Cyberdogs, an old DOS arcade shoot-em-up which allows players to work co-operatively during missions, and against each other in "dogfight" death-match mode.
* Crimson Fields - turn-based tactical war game. Protect supply convoys or raid enemy facilities to uncover technological secrets or fill your storage bays so you can repair damaged units or build new ones in your own factories.
Enjoy... and stay tuned for more!

"The concept of VsNotepad 2 is to note, change pages and view your notes like a true notepad. VsNotepad 2 allows you to organize your notes with a modern, simple, complete interface."
VsNotepad may share part of it's name with a common windows application, however it adds significantly more than Notepad could ever hope to have on the desktop. On sale now for $10 off it's usual price (sale price: $29.49), it looks like a nice app for jotting down everything from diagrams to story ideas. Check it out and let us know how it works for your needs!

So it's really no big secret at this point, but we've now received confirmation that T-Mobile will be unveiling its first Android handset -- presumably the Dream, G1, or whatever they decide to call it -- at a press event in New York City on September 23. The event is a whole shindig, too, kicking off in the morning and featuring "presentations from T-Mobile, Google and other company executives" followed by hands-ons with the real deal. Naturally, we'll be on hand in full force, so stay tuned!

Now this is an interesting development. According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new multi-hued iPod nano to the world -- a 4GB model. As there's been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the 'Let's Rock' event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer's site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168) -- though there seems to be some debate as to whether these lower capacity versions are limited editions or simply an incredible gaffe on Apple's part. Regardless, they appear to be the real thing, and they appear to be on store shelves right now (in some countries, at least). If you're looking for the ultimate Apple collector's item, this may be just the thing. Check out the gallery below for lots of looks at the mystery nano.

After the nudge the other day i was finally treated to an opticians test today with the sneek peek of the new Gizmondo website! Unfortuntly the above joke was real the sneek peeks of the website are tiny so much so no real detail is given, appart from a general idea of what is to come.
As you can see fans of spiderman may think of venom on first look as Rich explains
“Center shape is an orb that changes and mutates as it spins…when each button is pressed, the assembly stretches, extends and rebuilds itself.. ENJOY!!!”
Granted a first look all be it a tad late as Gizmondo do but somewhat dissapointing “Sneek peek” as it doesnt show much detail just of their art style. No information is availible of who is producing the website or what is on there but i’m sure we will fill you in on the next update.
Will this be the art style Gizmondo chooses for their new shell/OS? looks good but we shall see in the future.

It is very easy to miss the initial sound of an incoming message or a phone call especially if the smartphone was in another room at this moment, in a leather wallet or in your jacket when you're in a car or at the street. If you don't want to check the display constantly to ensure that you haven't missed an important phone call or a message you might be waiting for then you need to try Best Reminder from Smartphoneware. Best Reminder provides repeating alarms, visual notification and/or device vibrating to draw your attention to received but unnoticed messages and missed calls.

Anyone else tried to restore a custom firmware after updating to 10.5.5 and get error 1600?! I've tried 3 times and ended up resorting to Quickpwn.
I have read several other people having problems so please post up your results! Thanks.
This would potentially only apply to stock iphones... if the phone in already in an pwned state then it will continue to accept custom firmwares.

With under a week to go before the HTC Dream is officially unveiled in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal has given us something juicy to gnaw on for the time being: a price. Unsurprisingly positioned to compete directly with the iPhone 3G, the Android-powered HTC Dream / G1 will go for a cool $199 (with 2-year contract, obviously) when it launches on T-Mobile, though there's no word yet on what it'll run sans subsidization. So, how do you like dem Apples?

fsjk85 at the Australian Whirlpool forums was playing around with his camcorder's NightShot function when he found something interesting -- a hidden data matrix code on the left side of the iPhone 3G. We're guessing that's where Apple imprints the serial and IMEI numbers of each handset since it can't exactly hide them under a removable battery (cough), but we'll leave it to the rest of you to decode this sneaky tag and solve the mystery once and for all.

An invitation sent out on Tuesday by T-Mobile asks the media to gather next week to see the first phone built on the Android mobile platform, but will also pit Apple and Google against each other -- if reluctantly."
You mean they're actually going to release this eternally leaked device sometime? Whoa! So press conference next week, and rumors of late October release. Perhaps Android will finally make it out of rumor and into consumer's hands.

"In a move that could make organizing a mobile worker's life easier, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced Tuesday it is enabling Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on all of its S60 3rd edition handsets. The company did have a downloadable option for ActiveSync since 2006, but it was only available for limited handsets and the company told InformationWeek it didn't do a good job publicizing that option. The S60 series phones are all powered by the Symbian operating system, which is optimized the OS for convergence with current multimedia applications as well as making enhancements to its security. "
That makes 4 mobile platforms that now have some form of ActiveSync built in that allow server syncing with Exchange - Windows Mobile, PalmOS, iPhone 2.0 and Nokia's Symbian S60 series. Nokia has said the option will be coming to the E and N series devices as well.
While this strengthens the Windows Server/Exchange platform, I cannot help but think this weakens the Windows Mobile position. It has bee one of the strengths of the platform distinguishing it from others as an enterprise solution. Now, it is more and more just one of the choices a business professional has.

We just got an email from Jazon, the creator of the AppStore app SuperPong2 giving us the heads up that both versions of his app will be removed from the AppStore friday. This is the second App we are aware of that has been removed from the AppStore due to copyrights. A couple weeks ago we reported when Tris was removed from the AppStore. Jazon's email below:
"Hi, my name is Jazon Burnell and I am the owner of Spiffyware and developer of the game SuperPong.
In a situation similar to what Noah Witherspoon went through with Tris, I am being asked to remove my SuperPong 2 app from the App Store by Atari Interactive due to infringements against the pong and breakout copyrights.
Being a student, I don't presently have the time or resources to fight this, and so have until Friday to take the app down. I know you guys are dealing with your own sorts of legal annoyances, but if you guys wouldn't mind, it would be greatly appreciated if a story could be posted saying that anyone who is interested in downloading the app, the free Lite version or the paid.

A few days ago, we showed you iPhoneModem, by Addition. If you like a super quick solution with no security, but a great interface and extreme ease of use, that solution is still a great one, and can be found on our Cydia source as iPhoneModem by Addition. It is shareware, running $9.99.
Last night we posted iPhoneModem zsrelay - a solution (which actually had the iPhoneModem name first, but didn't release a public beta until after Addition did - for now, the packages have the same name, and are marked as "by Addition" or "zsrelay") which offers SSH encryption, background running of the daemon, and best of all - its completely free.

It looks like those still hanging onto a slightly aging Palm OS device now have a new option that'll let 'em breath a bit of new life into it, as one Dmitry Grinberg has released a driver that adds SDHC card support to a whole host of the devices. That includes the Tungsten T, C, E2, and T5, the LifeDrive, the Palm TX, and the Zire 31 and 72 -- support for other devices, including the Tungsten T3 and, yes, even the Tapwave Zodiac, is also promised. That boost in storage doesn't come free, however, but we're guessing there's at least a few Palm loyalists out there that'll gladly accept the $21 price tag to get a taste of what 32GB of storage is like.

A lot of hopes and open-source dreams are riding on a plucky little phone platform called Android, and its public debut on a real-live phone happens Tuesday. Those of us at Lifehacker HQ who didn't spring for an iPhone, and even some who did, are eager to see how it performs and, more importantly, what kind of useful apps will soon appear for the open Android. That's not to say we (and many other bloggers) don't have our reservations and lingering questions. We've put together a guide to get you up to speed on the Android platform and the first phone that runs it, along with what we expect, or just hope, to see in Android's very near future.
What is Android, exactly?
Android isn't the "Google Phone" or "GPhone." It's a (mostly) free and open-source mobile operating system that's made to run on all kinds of cell phones, and allow nearly anyone who can program in Java to create and distribute applications for it. Google spilled their plans for Android at the same time—November 2007—they announced that 34 hardware, software, and network companies had signed onto their Open Handset Alliance. In other words, Tuesday's press hoopla surrounds just the first phone to utilize Android, T-Mobile's HTC Dream; unless it's an outright failure, most cell customers can expect to see their carrier hawking an Android phone in the not-too-distant future.
So what will Android look and feel like? We know that, at least with the Dream, phone users will use the flip-out mini-keyboard to enter text, but rely on a prominent, iPhone-like touch screen for navigation. Of course, if an Android developer wants to build a touch-screen keyboard, there's nothing to stop them. One major difference between any Android phone and Apple's iPhone stems from the Cupertino company's patent application for "multi-touch" features; Android users can't resize their screens by pinching and expanding, or use two fingers to dual-finger scroll, but, other than that, you're flipping between work screens with a finger flick, tapping and dragging icons around, and otherwise manipulating your phone world with your fingers.
Don't take our word for it, though. To see Android in action, check out our sibling Gizmodo's in-depth video tour of Android's 0.9 development environment. The Dream and other Android phones may end up looking different (and, inevitably, deeply branded with your carrier's colors and logos, because you obviously can't remember who you pay more than $40 each month to), but they'll share the basic navigation, app-launching and phone-using functions explored in that video.
For a real-world Android demonstration on what is almost certainly a working Dream model, check out this video, shot earlier this week at the Google Developers Event in London:
So, should I get my wallet ready or not?
After showing off the HTC Dream Tuesday, T-Mobile might just surprise everyone by making the phone available that day, but most buyers are expecting to grab it in late October. The comprehensive AndroidGuys blog suggests that T-Mobile might release another handful of Android-based phones, followed by Sprint, and then, possibly, Verizon and even AT&T. Four of the top five cell manufacturers are working on an Android-based model, though, so a strong market response may push the carriers toward open handsets.

Following our sneak peek at one of Sony's neat new iPod/iPhone docks last week, the company's now officially released three other sets to tickle our fancy. Pictured above is the boom box model (ZS-S4iP) with Mega Bass sound, for some old school on-the-go music blaring—the dock secures and charges your music player and it comes with a wireless remote for full menu control. It'll be available in October for $100. If that doesn't speak to you maybe these other ones will.

If the chances of having your iPhone stolen by incredibly stupid thieves are pretty high, we recommend you download Private-I. The $1 application shows up as an icon screaming “PRIVATE” in big red letters, which will allegedly lure your phone burglar into launching it. The app then loads up a fake screen that says “Accessing pictures” while sneakily using the iPhone's GPS (or triangulation) capabilities to email you with your phone's coordinates. I'm not sure how big the population of bumbling bandits is, but hey! Anything to keep your baby safe, right?

According to an Apple patent application, the company is considering adding an "At a Glance" screen to the iPhone. Instead of spreading various notifications across multiple icons, the screen would allow a one-page roundup of the phone's calls, SMSs and voicemails, and a keypress would take the user to any of those individual screens. The screen could, of course, signal push notifications like email as well.
And while I can't help but to think it'd be handy, does this screen look like it could get a little cluttered *cough* Windows Mobile *cough* to anyone else?

A patent filed by Apple hints to the possibility of individual preferences/settings for applications directly from the home screen instead of the current messy system of having to open up the app to change prefs or having to browse through the settings app menus to access preferences. The current system is a bit of a mess and I personally do not like app prefs being in the settings app at all.
"The user interface has a plurality of application icons. In response to a first gesture, the GUI changes the appearances of the application icons whose corresponding applications have user-adjustable settings," the filing explains. "In response to a second gesture on a selected application icon whose appearance is changed, the GUI displays user-adjustable settings of an application that corresponds to the selected application icon. In response to one or more additional gestures, the GUI changes one or more user-adjustable settings of the application that corresponds to the selected application icon."

All right, kiddies, we know all of you out there have dutifully replaced your DS with a gaming-powered iPhone 2.0, but with all that gaming power comes the responsibility to be careful. Thus, you should all be on the lookout for a new Windows virus masquerading as apparently popular iPhone game Penguin Panic.
According to Sophos, the computer-controlling Trojan shows up as a zipped attachment to an e-mail with a subject like "Virtual iPhone games!" or "Apple: The most popular game!" Ironically, it seems the virus won't actually infect your iPhone or any Mac-based computers. It also seems incapable of infecting other portable gaming systems, which should be a relief to those of you still living in the past with those long-defunct platforms.

It's been just over a week since we ran a smash-and-grab at Apple's unveiling of its newest entries to the iPod family, the nano 4G and touch 2G. The devices, both set along an evolutionary (rather than revolutionary) path have certainly been nipped, tucked, and updated -- but we wanted to know if they'd been improved at all. For the nano, we've seen some iteration of the same device for years now, leaving questions as to how much further you can take a low-end music player, while the touch is another story completely; a handheld which treads that ever-thinning line between entertainment device and micro-computer. Do either of these products hit their marks, or has Apple overextended itself in its pursuit of market saturation? Keep reading to find out.
It was just about a year ago that we saw a real ramp-up of an increasing trend with Apple: a dead-on leaked photo of an unannounced product. In August of 2007, we caught a glimpse of a short, fat, and let's be honest... ugly little MP3 player that the rumoratti claimed was the redesigned iPod nano. What was probably more surprising than knowing that somehow Apple had let the leak slip past its all-seeing eye was the fact that the company had actually taken the design in this direction. While one division appeared to be asleep at the wheel, another was cranking on high -- around the same time, Apple released the first generation touch to the world, thus heralding a completely new direction in iPods for the company, and significantly impacting our perception of what a music / video player can and can't (or should and shouldn't) do.
A lot has happened in the past year; Apple trotted out the MacBook Air, launched (with a few stumbles) the enormously successful trifecta of the App Store, iPhone 3G and MobileMe, the company lost (then found) its relationship with NBC, and battled rumors about Steve Jobs' health (as well as his mistakenly reported death). In the midst of this flurry, can the company still pull off a relevant iPod, and does the touch have any more ground to gain?

We know -- it takes time to really dig deep within an open-source device (particularly a handset), but now that a few months have ticked by since OpenMoko's Neo FreeRunner began shipping in North America, we figured there was never a better time to ask how your experience has been. The unorthodox mobile isn't for the faint of heart (or the technology-challenged, truthfully), but for the hackers and tinkerers out there who splurged for one in hopes of finding their new favorite toy, how have things been? Is the interface friendly enough? Are there too many limitations? Is the design to your liking? Give it to us straight down in comments below -- how would you change this purty piece of Linux-infused kit?

Beware citizens, for it would appear that the T-Virus has mutated, and has now taken to resurrecting not only the recently deceased, but also mobile platforms thought long since dead. Or at the very least irrelevant. Gamasutra reports that Capcom is bringing a game based on its upcoming CGI flick, Resident Evil: Degeneration, to Nokia's N-Gage service, which (re)launched earlier this year and is available on multiple Nokia smartphones.
According to the report, the movie tie-in will feature two separate modes of play and 3D graphics designed to both show off the platform's capabilities and illustrate Capcom's "dedication to N-Gage," a fascination we imagine will blur the line between devotion and necrophilia when the title launches later this year.

The first Android phone is dropping next week, and the people who pick it up will be toting around mobile Google software in their pocket wherever they go. They'll be using mobile Google apps, probably in concert with using Gmail, Gcal and Google Maps on their normal computer. We know that Google is tossing out all user data after 9 months, but you've got to wonder what kind of a picture Google is getting of its heavy users like that when it's only getting info from how its apps are used. After the jump, an imagined day in the life of a Google user, as recorded and perceived by the Googleplex itself.

Remember Trism? It's the clever triangular puzzler from Steve Demeter of Demiforce, a Bejeweled-style iPhone app that uses the hardware's touchscreen and accelerometer for innovative play. Well, that little five dollar game has made Demiforce a cool $250,000 since its July release; not bad for someone who isn't Sega and comes armed with pre-established franchises like Super Monkey Ball. Start whipping up your apps quickly, kids, while the gettin' is still good — and make sure you don't make any Atari clones.

I've written a small application called WebViewDemo that shows how you can add web content to your application. You can find it in the apps-for-android project. This application demonstrates how you can embed a WebView into an activity and also how you can have two way communication between your application and the web content.
A WebView uses the same rendering and JavaScript engine as the browser, but it runs under the control of your application. The WebView can be full screen or you can mix it with other Views. The content for your WebView can come from anywhere. The WebView can download content from the web, or it can come from local files stored in your assets directory. The content can even be dynamically generated by your application code. For this example, the HTML comes from a local file called demo.html.
This application does not do very much: when you click on the android, he raises his arm.

Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 provides the ability to synchronize data from disparate sources. Rather than simply replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as laptops and devices that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is crucial for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Equally important is the need to synchronize the local copy of the data with a central server when a network connection is available. The Synchronization Services API, which is modeled after the ADO.NET data access APIs, gives you an intuitive way to synchronize data. It makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can count on a consistent network connection. Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0, which released with Visual Studio 2008, enabled synchronization between a server database and a SQL Compact 3.5 client database running on a desktop. With this download, you can also synchronize between a server database and a SQL Compact database on a Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device

The launch of Android is the most important event in mobile phones since the release of the iPhone. It could actually be more important, in the long run. Even if it doesn't exceed Google's wildest dreams to become a ubiquitous mobile platform, it's sure to re-stoke innovation in mobile phones as platforms slug it out for supremacy. But besides all that, Android just looks pretty damn cool. Of course, Android isn't all Google-y amazingness—there are some definite reasons to take a step back from the love-in. So here are five reasons why you should be absolutely hyped for Android on Tuesday, and five why, well...

We're not particularly inclined to believe them, but the whispers that Apple is about to bump the top-end iPhone capacity to 32GB are getting harder to ignore -- especially since 8GB inventory is drying up, leading to speculation that's it's going to be dropped as soon as next week. We think the timing's a little odd on the heels of the Let's Rock iPod refresh, but considering the rampant speculation that Apple was forced to bump the nano to 16GB and drop the "limited edition" 4GB model entirely at the last minute in response to the new Zune lineup we suppose it makes competitive sense. AppleInsider also says customers will once again get the option to activate in-home, but we haven't heard anything about that -- we'll see what happens in the next few days.

I'm posting this here as it may be beneficial to the community at large. I developed this for use with the Kaiser, but it is tested to work with other HTC/WM devices including the Diamond. You can read a little about it here or go get it at the MAIN THREAD in the Kaiser Forums. Please post over there. Thanks.
SASHIMI...the ultimate Automated Installer - 7.5 is here!
SASHIMI is first and foremost an installer. Its main function is to install CAB, .REG., .XML, .EXE, and .MSCR files that can be used when setting up your device. It can be run in Manual Mode, Automated Mode, or in Manual+Auto mode. SASHIMI can also perform backups of your important files and registry entries and allow for easy restore during installation. It would be impossible to describe all the additional things that SASHIMI can do....well actually, not impossible, just lengthy...so read the documentation or check out the series of video tutorials!

Amid the iPhone 3G launch hysteria, we made a pronouncement that, looking back now long after the dust has settled, pretty well nailed it: forget hardware, it's code that counts. Code via the juggernaut that is the App Store, which allowed the iPhone to truly came into its own as a mobile platform.
Now, our first official look at T-Mobile's G1, the first Android-capable phone built by HTC, is less than 24 hours away, and the same adage holds true now more than ever. Android's openness puts the emphasis even more squarely on the code this platform will run, making the hardware almost an afterthought. And while it's still quite early in the game and things won't really kick up until the G1 becomes available sometime in October, the Android Market is already looking like an equally if not more vibrant place for great apps for your phone.

Apple's iPhone Mail app isn't bad, but for those of us looking to use advanced Gmail functions (like managing multiple accounts or starring items), an app named MailWrangler would fill in the gaps...that is, if Apple hadn't rejected the application from their iTunes store. Here is the message sent from Apple to the developer, six weeks after the program was submitted to iTunes

Google just posted a few videos showing all the Google applications loaded on the T-Mobile G1. This includes Seach, Maps, Gmail and Contacts, Calendar, Google Talk and You Tube all enabled with a single sign-on -- no further logins are required. The fact that these are fully synchronized to the web negates the need for a desktop application. Nice. Amazon MP3 store, IMing, Street View compass mode and plenty more highlighted in the videos posted after the break.

Good thing nobody's working on anything right now in the smartphone space, or this could be really bad news for Microsoft, whose current version of Windows Mobile lost the technology and usability edge a while ago, and is being bandaged up by the likes of HTC to keep the OS relevant to consumers. According to CNET, some of Microsoft's partners in the space are claiming that the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 has been pushed back to the second half of 2009, instead of the "early next year" they'd been expecting. Microsoft has yet to make a formal announcement about the release date of the OS or the specific feature set, so we can't exactly point our fingers and laugh, but we'd say crying big, mobile OS tears into our morning cereal is certainly appropriate.

While the world waits to see the first Android cellphone revealed in New York later today, others are hard at work extending the reach of the open-source OS beyond just handsets. John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer at Wind River Systems says, "We're starting to see Android get designed in on devices that extend way beyond the phone--things that might go in the automobile or things that might go in the home." Bruggeman then collects his wits and adds, "I don't want to pre-announce any design wins, I think you'll see them in 2009. I would be shocked if you didn't." Indeed. After all, Intel and Wind River (both Android Open Handset Alliance members) have been working on an open, Linux-based car-computing platform since at least May of this year -- so a switch to Android would be an over-simplified snap. It certainly makes sense for the hardware independent -- thanks to Java-based Dalvik virtual machine -- OS, middleware, and apps to spread throughout a consumer electronics industry lacking a common development platform. Whether this occurs by Google's design or just a happy by-product of Android's momentum remains to be seen.

Android Market is officially out of the bag. The application store for Google's Android cellphones only contains free software for now and there is no approval process for the software: it's an open content distribution system. The structure is similar to the iPhone App Store, with a rating system similar to YouTube's. Google is touting their experience as a search engine and infrastructure provider as advantages to Apple's store, but would that be really useful if everyone and their dogs can submit their flashlight apps?

Zodttd has released a new beta for the iphone, this beta is donationware ie you dont pay you dont get, heres the details;
As promised, I have released an early build of vlc4iphone v1.0.0 Beta. It is based on the latest stable release of VideoLan.org's VLC, v0.9.2! Some core functionality is missing from it still.
If you would like to try out this version, please consider donating.
I took some quick screenshots but they didn't come out so well:
Here's what it has:
New interface. New look.
Internet Radio Browsing & Searching. Shows current track information!
Command line input by manually adding a bookmark.
Seeking into audio & video.
Mobile video formats are running great, such as FLV and 3GP.
Working file browser.
Enter a manual bookmark to an HTTP URL or RTSP/MMS for streaming media!
Here's what it currently lacks:
Playlists! It currently only plays one piece of media at a time. This is being worked on as we speak.
Performance of MP4's is very slow.
Sound is sometimes missing in

Hey, that's pretty awesome that Amazon's thrown together an MP3 store app for the G1, isn't it? What would be even cooler still, though, is if you could actually listen to those tracks without a crazy dongle hanging off your phone. Like many recent HTCs (Touch HD notably excepted), the G1 eschews a standard 3.5mm headphone jack for its proprietary ExtUSB connector, meaning you'll need custom headphones or an adapter to plug in your own. What's worse, the adapter won't be available immediately at launch, just a bundled headset. Why, HTC? Why?

With sales of GTA IV slowing down lately, the EA bid for Take-Two officially over, the threat of Rockstar's Sam and Dan Houser potentially signing with another publisher, and Rockstar's own reluctance to bring GTA to Wii, the future of the GTA franchise has certainly been kept fresh in everyone's minds.
And while Wii isn't really being considered at Rockstar at the moment, another very popular platform could be: Apple's iPhone. With GTA: Chinatown Wars coming to the DS and making use of the touch screen later this year, it wouldn't be too difficult for Rockstar to bring the game to Apple's increasingly important (for gaming and other apps) iPhone, notes Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey.
"We expect GTA will likely be ported to Apple's iPhone platform, leveraging the device's touch screen technology and accelerometer. Apple's determination to layer gaming applications into the device's consumer value proposition and growing installed base is likely sufficient motivation for a deal," he said in his most recent report.
Hickey also commented on the Housers' situation. Unlike Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, Hickey does not envision Sam and Dan Houser abandoning Take-Two. "We find it unlikely that the Houser brothers would leave Take-Two Interactive for a competitor, as loyalty, compensation, culture and compelling IP should be sufficient in aggregate to leave employment alternatives unappealing," he said.

It's official. The Android-powered G1 will be hitting T-Mobile stores across the US on October 22, the UK in November, and elsewhere in Europe in early 2009. Being a Windows Mobile site, we'll spare you the fine details. Head over to the T-Mobile G1 site, and check out the videos after the break, if you're eager to learn more.
On to other matters: Android is one capable platform, and undoubtedly, one that users of Google services will love. Combined with Apple's continuing efforts to enhance the capabilities of the iPhone and Mac OS X, and the growth of heavyweights such as BlackBerry and Symbian, where does this leave Windows Mobile? Over the past year, we've perused multiple comments from readers suggesting that the platform is becoming increasingly stagnant and that efforts by HTC, Samsung, and other manufacturers to improve the usability of the platform are merely a band-aid solution.
As a result, you may have already jumped ship or are considering it. If you're in that group, just what would Microsoft have to do to Windows Mobile to win you back? If you're not in that group, what is it about Windows Mobile that's keeping you glued to the platform? The mobile war is on. And it's you, the consumer, who dictates the winners and the losers. Tell us what makes, or would make, Windows Mobile a winner for you.

I think the last time I posted on cell phones and brain cancer the conclusion was, it does not increase the risk of cancer, but I don't really remember because it seems to change every year or so. The latest research out of Sweden concludes that until your brain is fully developed around the age of 20, you may be five times more likely to get brain cancer from a cell phone than an adult. Of course, if cell phones don't increase the risk of brain cancer in adults, 5 X 0 = 0. I am not making light of it, there just seems to be new and different research so often it makes me wonder if enough time has passed to conclude anything.
"Children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobile phones, startling new research indicates. The study, experts say, raises fears that today's young people may suffer an "epidemic" of the disease in later life. At least nine out of 10 British 16-year-olds have their own handset, as do more than 40 per cent of primary schoolchildren."
Both of my kids have cell phones, primarily because we don't have a land line. The oldest texts about 200 messages a day it seems and the youngest about 20 per month. Neither spend much time talking on the phone. The study suggest kids should use a hand-free headset. Has anyone concluded that bluetooth radiation is less harmful than cell phone radiation?

"Well the mobile browser world will likely be in for some serious churn now that Mozilla's Firefox, codenamed "Fennec", is throwing its hat into the ring. Mozilla's Tristan Nitot commented that not only is the mobile browser in the works, but that its expected to arrive for Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Linux. Though, the rub here is that we'll need to wait until sometime in 2010 to see this live, and honestly, we may have HTC handsets integrated into our minds well before then."
It amazes me that we have been hearing about a mobile Internet browser from Mozilla for years and the soonest it will be available will be 2010! By that time Opera and all the WebKit variants will have a strangle-hold on the mobile browsing market – at least on the Smartphone side of things. There might even be a sliver a hope that by 2010 Microsoft would have already released Windows Mobile 7 and be on the way to announcing Windows Mobile 8 which hopefully will have a new and improved browser. 2010 is a little late to be jumping into the mobile Internet ring in my opinion but who knows, there is still a chance they might come out with something incredibly awesome and do to the mobile world what they have done to the Desktop world.

Anyone with a bit of programing knowledge can make some serious cash on the AppStore. All you need is an original idea, solid execution, nice looking graphics, patience, coding know-how, and a little luck and you too can produce a big hit on the Apple AppStore.
I was reading wired today and noticed that the Developer of Trism, Steve Demeter, successfully combined all of these together and has been a big success on the AppStore. How big? Well $250,000 in the last two months isn't just loose change that I found in my couch last night (I found $1.15. I was excited).
Demeter started developing Trism back in the Installer days before the AppStore existed as a distribution medium for developers. Trism was free and could only be installed on Jailbroken iPhones. The distribution platform was through Installer (we hosted Trism back then) and had a limited reach to our freakin

Many independent developers are doing quite well with their apps on the AppStore. If you're a University student in the U.S. and want to start learning how to code for the iPhone check out Apple's new iPhone Developer University Program and put some pressure on your Professors to get the program running at your school.
"The iPhone Developer University Program is a free program designed for higher education institutions looking to introduce curriculum for developing iPhone or iPod touch applications. The University Program provides a wealth of development resources, sophisticated tools for testing and debugging, and the ability to share applications within the same development team. Institutions can also submit applications for distribution in the App Store."
What can be done with this program?
Instructors can set up development teams with as many as 200 students.

When Alex Sokirynsky's Podcaster App was rejected from the AppStore by Apple because "... Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes," Sokirynsky came up with a solution: distribute Podcaster via ad-hoc.
It was good while it lasted but now Apple has shut that down as well. Originally Sokirynsky was able to create new sets of Podcaster 100 at a time to send out to whomever donated $10. Apple apparently doesn't like that business plan much and has removed the "remove device" link in Sokirynsky's account on the Apple developer website. Clicking that link is one of the necessary steps to get a new set of Podcaster out the gates and into donators hands.
For now Sokirynsky believes that all the previously distributed versions of Podcaster will still work so users that donated and received a copy wont be SOL. Sokirynsky also plans on making an update and distributing to all of those that purchased a copy of Pocaster after he tests it on his personal phone -- he does warn to keep a copy of

Remember the major security threat introduced with 2.0.2 which allowed anyone to access all the major phone application even if you had a passcode?
Apple said that they fixed the security. But, actually security not completely fixed. Another major bug still exists (one that has been around forever). The Emergency Call mode in passcode screen which is just meant to call emergency numbers like 911 can actually be used to call any number!
This is a big flaw as anyone can make a call and make you pay a big bill if somehow he/ she gets the phone! This means that iPhone Passcode is a big failure as anyone can access the main feature of iPhone really easily even if you think you have secured it.
You can reproduce the bug as follows:
Set a passcode

The Panoramio web site has a great collection of photos from all over the world, and they also have a very convenient web API. I thought it would be a lot of fun to use Android to access this content while you are out walking around – and especially to have Android find interesting photos based on your current location. The resulting open source application is now available in the apps-for-android project.
The application starts by showing your current location in a custom MapView. You can pan and zoom this map to choose the area you want to search.

About this time last year, my colleagues and I were preparing for the first of the "early look" SDK releases. I remember being a little freaked out—November 12 was starting to sound awfully close! But I think I can safely speak for the entire Android team when I say that we were all very excited about that upcoming release. In the year since, we've run and concluded the first Android Developer Challenge, given away $5,000,000, released more SDK builds, and worked with our partners to prepare the first device for users. It's been quite the whirlwind of a year.
In one of those strange cosmic symmetries, here we are a year later, and we're once again very excited about an upcoming release. I'm referring, of course, to the first Android-powered device that our colleagues at T-Mobile have just announced—the T-Mobile G1. We can't wait to see our hard work on store shelves and in the hands of users, but today we're almost as excited because we're announcing the brand-new Android 1.0 SDK, release 1.
Yes, that means we're officially at 1.0. Of course the SDK won't remain static—we'll keep improving the tools by adding features and fixing bugs. But now developers can rely on the APIs in the SDK, and can update their applications to run on Android 1.0-compatible devices. The Android Market beta will also launch with the T-Mobile G1, providing developers an easy and open way to distribute their applications on that and later devices. I've already seen a lot of applications that have me stoked, and I can't wait to see things really come together as developers cross that final mile to prepare their applications for Android 1.0.
So what's next for us? Well, we'll keep working on the SDK, as I said. But we're also working hard with our partners in the Open Handset Alliance on the open-source release, with the aim of making the code available in the fourth quarter. The second Android Developer Challenge is also on the horizon—watch this space for more details. We're also already working on the future of the Android platform, and on more devices. We've updated the Developer Roadmap, and we'll keep updating it as more information becomes available.
It has indeed been quite an exciting road to get to where we are today. The road stretches on ahead though, and we're not slowing down for a moment. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you developers out there—and trying out your apps on my phone!
Happy Coding!

Today the Apple site was updated with a nice "Buy iPhone 3g" button suggesting that you can now buy the iPhone online. Don't get excited you can't actually order a new iPhone from Apple via the internet. What you can do is pre-qualify and choose out options like your AT&T rate plan so once you get to the Apple store you only have to pick up your iPhone.
While this may save a few minutes for some I don't really see the point. Something like this would be extremely useful for a new product launch day where lines are extremely long and iTunes activation crashes -- of course then Apple wouldn't have all the hype and fanboyism outside their stores and the excitement of the the launch wouldn't be nearly as high.
If you find it easier the option to get some of the paperwork done online before you pick up your new iPhone is there for your convenience. Enjoy.

With the recent string of AppStore rejections devs of apps like Podcaster have been posting the typically flimsy rejection reasons given by Apple. It appears Apple doesn't like the bad press they have received because of this and now have made it clear the contents of Apple rejection letters may not be shared with a new line in the letters:
"THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS MESSAGE IS UNDER NON-DISCLOSURE"
While it is not totally clear whether or not the original NDA that developers are required to sign covers these rejection letters there is no doubt now that if your app is rejected from the AppStore Apple expects you to keep quite and not share the details. You don't want to feel the wrath of Apple do you?

After Apple has finished the phase 1 and 2 of launching iPhone 3G worldwide, it is now launching the phase 3.
In the first phase they released iPhone in 22 countries on 11th July, 2008 which included Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US.
After that, the second phase was launched in 22 more countries on 22nd August, 2008 i.e. just more than a month which included countries like Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, India, Liechtenstein, Macau, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, and Uruguay.
Now, they have launched the third phase. All the countries will not get it on the same day unlike first two phases out of which many will get the phone as soon as this weekend!

It's not hard to argue that the App Store's inspired success for the mobile software world, with over 100 million programs downloaded on only a few million phones in just a matter of months. Palm, Nokia, Microsoft must all be simmering (and understandably so). But Apple, if you're having trouble getting buy-in from passionate developers with a serious creative vision for iPhone apps beyond the dozens of me-too calculators and to-do lists -- and you know you are -- the writing's on the wall, and you're the one who put it there.
But it's not just about the draconian SDK agreement (which we'll get to in a minute), or the uncertainty that runs through every developer -- large and small -- as they wonder whether you'll will give the all-important thumbs-up to the app they've just invested all that blood / sweat / tears / money into (we'll get to that, too). What seems to the rest of us like nefarious intent may simply be Apple coming to grips with its own successes by reacting with the same kneejerk response it plies to most everything else: control and micromanagement.
Let's rewind for a moment though, and go back to what Steve said at this Spring's iPhone roadmap event, where the SDK was introduced for the first time. As Steve's introduction reached its crescendo, he excitedly declared, "The developers and us have the same exact interest, which is to get as many apps out in front of as many iPhone users as possible," but "there are going to be some apps we're not going to distribute: porn, malicious apps, apps that invade your privacy..." The slide listed "malicious," "illegal," "porn," "privacy," "bandwidth hog," and "unforeseen." Ah, unforeseen -- glorious wiggle room. I suppose "apps that might compete with our own" wouldn't have gone over as well with the crowd. Read on.
As soon as the iPhone SDK's legal agreement made its way into the hands of eager developers, it became clear just what everybody was in for. Paraphrased in layman's terms (and vetted with help from our own geek-lawyer extraordinaire, Nilay), here are the key clauses your developers have to agree to in order to write an app for the iPhone:
Sections 2.1 and 2.2b: Use our SDK -- which is the only way to make a proper app -- but you can only distribute the applications through us. We're it. Make an app and try to sell it without us, and you're totally liable. Oh, and sub-note: we can approve or withhold an app at our sole discretion, and we're in no way responsible for your business's viability, nor your investment of time or money should we decide not to consign it in the App Store.
Section 3: You can't make apps that are mean, evil, malicious, install backdoors, etc. Alternately, no VoIP over cellular, no providing real-time route guidance, and nothing intended for use in emergency / life-saving situations. Don't breach anyone's copyright -- and don't screw with us.
Sections 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3: This SDK legal agreement is confidential. Engadget shouldn't even be writing about it. Also confidential: any knowledge we share with you about how to develop iPhone apps. So if you were thinking about doing a blog or a book about developing for the iPhone, or simply open-sourcing your app, then think again. Knowledge is a dangerous thing -- why do you think we did a commercial themed after Orwell's 1984?
Don't worry though, not everything is confidential: namely, anything you submit to us will be absolutely "non-confidential." We can talk publicly or privately about your apps without warning -- including what they do and how they work -- to whomever we want (including your competitors), and even before you've announced anything. We can also look at what you're doing, knock it off, and release our own version without any reproach. Trust that we wouldn't do such a thing, though.
Besides a few very specific callouts (like the no VoIP on cellular bit), all we've got to go by is one vague, gray, largely unspecific blanket statement: "No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple's Published APIs and builtin interpreter(s)."
Basically, that means that you can't build anything that you haven't prescribed in its given tool and feature set. So if the iPhone already has something like, say, a browser (read: mobile Safari), and Google wants to port a mobile version of Chrome for the iPhone, Google's out of luck. And Apple's legal wiggle room is unbelievably broad. Is a Word / Excel editor a code interpreter? Is a BitTorrent client a code interpreter? Should one have to build a complete and fully functional piece of software just to find out?
Thankfully, you guys have a fast-tracked review process for rejected apps so devs don't have to go to the back of the line if their program has some fixable but show-stopping issues. But mitigating the inherent risk of having their hard work nixed, developers are likely to either avoid the platform entirely for applications requiring any significant level of investment, or do as a huge portion of devs alrady have, keeping their apps largely limited to completely safe, un-interesting, dare I say novelty concepts. It's like the SDK doctrine, purposefully or not, gave Sturgeon's Law ("ninety percent of everything is crap") a big helping hand by de-incentivizing the best developers from doing anything interesting. Calculators, to-do lists, dictionaries, flashlights, there are hundreds and hundreds -- but not a single app that will sync my Google Calendar over the air, or help me manage my multiple Gmail accounts, or let me acquire podcasts -- the most frequently updated content on my device -- on the go.
In fact, each of those kinds of apps has, among others, been blocked or rejected. As developer Synthesis discovered in creating their iPhone SyncML client, there's no way to directly sync the device's calendar over the air with CalDAV / SyncML. Sure, one can do this with the Apple-endorsed methods (via Exchange or Mobile Me), but unlike the iPhone's relatively open contact database, devs aren't allowed to touch the iPhone's calendar database. No one really knows why, and they're certainly not being offered any explanations. Sorry, Synthesis.
Then there's more recently MailWrangler, and the now-infamous Podcaster, two apps rejected for not "providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality" and "duplicating the functionality of... iTunes," respectively. Podcaster allowed for podcast downloads on the go, while MailWrangler gives users legitimate, Apple-prescribed means of accessing multiple Gmail accounts without having to log out and log back in again.
But here's the real kicker in all this: there are already numerous iPhone apps with very real, very clear code interpreters built in, as well as other apps with features that don't just kind-of-maybe-sort-of duplicate Apple functionality -- they do so outright. And they're available right now on the App Store. I won't call those apps out here, as I don't want to see them get taken down just to make a point, but there are apps that already fully encroach on Apple's own objectives for the device, and they were most certainly let through.
So why is Apple rejecting some apps and letting others pass? I'm not sure there's any simple answer. Macworld editor Jason Snell wrote on this same topic just yesterday, insinuating that some malicious behavior "can just as easily be explained by incompetence." And given the piss-poor quality and frequency by which many of those apps "duplicate" the functionality of Apple's software (both on the desktop and iPhone), the rules of acceptance seem in many ways more arbitrary than iniquitous. Let that sink in for a moment, though, because it's kind of an unsettling conclusion we're beginning to arrive at: not only are there no known hard and fast rules to abide by when writing a program for the App Store, there's quite likely to a largely subjective smell-test for apps towards the end of the review process. It's not just about playing by all the rules, it might also be a crap shoot -- developers had better hope they get assigned an App Store reviewer who's feeling generous that day.
So it seems to me, you have two possible courses of action to clean up this mess, Apple: one, the bare minimum of courtesy and respect for its developers, and the other, full-on-righteous. If absolutely nothing else, you need to post some very clear, very easily interpreted guidelines as to what will and will not fly in the App Store. No more mystery, no more concern as to whether the investment associated with developing a program will be for naught if some faceless App Store approval technician semi-arbitrarily decides to hit reject. Just lay it out for all to bear and follow. Sure, there will be a lot of hating going on when Apple says in explicit terms that Mozilla has zero hope of ever getting Firefox on the iPhone, but at least the crippling uncertainty is removed from the equation. You shouldn't have to be one of the hallowed few approved by the iFund to be certain before you start work on your app that it will be approved.
Now, if you want to do the right thing -- the thing that may ultimately keep you out of some grumpy developer's class-action lawsuit, the thing that will take away Android's biggest consumer appeal right now -- you'll will simply stop filtering apps based on content, and only look for the kind of code Steve specifically promised to protect users against in the first place: grossly buggy and broken, malicious, or otherwise evil. I'm not exactly convinced of the latter's likelihood, but closed market or open, at a certain point this whole thing becomes about consistency and reliability, and right now you've got neither to wave in your defense, Apple.
In the meantime, groups like the iPhone Dev Team will continue to carry the torch for jailbreaking, hacking, and unauthorized app development. Hell, jailbroken development will even likely gain steam as increasing numbers of users can't find enough apps of any real utility on the official App Store. Even big companies like Sling Media have taken to working around the walled-garden. So here's to doing good by all the good people willing to invest in your platform, and to the simple kind of change that Apple, as a company, can make today if only you think a little harder about tomorrow -- and everyone living in it with an iPhone or iPod touch.

Well, that was speedy. Not too long after iPhone 2.1 arrived to fix most of iPhone 2.0's most damning problems, Apple has seeded OS 2.2 Beta 1 to developers. No one's had a chance to dive in yet to see what's new, but some mo' bug fixes, push notifications (finally) and added GPS features sound like a good bet, now that most of the bigger bugs are squished.

HappyWakeUp is a new cellphone alarm app developed for S60 (the other open platform) that only wakes you when it knows you're in a light sleep cycle. How does it know? Well, Computerworld says HappyWakeUp actually uses the microphone from your phone to statistically analyze your sleep habits based on noises you make, and when placed under your pillow, it determines what phase of sleep you're in.

Seen at the Valley Fair Apple Store here in the Bay Area, some guy's protesting Apple for something or other while wearing a homemade iPhone costume. Did your mom help you make that costume, sir? Because you should really ask her for help—she'd be able to pick out a nicer typeface and better looking icons. Best of luck to your cause, whatever it is

Even as Android lights up developers' eyes with the sparkling promise of total openness, Apple's grip continues to tighten around iPhone app development. After being blocked from App Store for "duplicating" iTunes functionality—a dubious argument, for many reasons—Podcaster's developers turned to a loophole in Apple's ad hoc app distribution program (mainly for education and testing) to unofficially distribute the app. For $10, they'd register your iPhone or iPod touch and you'd get Podcaster, totally legit, no jailbreaking or anything. Apple has just blocked the developer, Alex Sokirynsky, from making new ad hoc licenses, effectively killing any further distribution.

T-Mobile's just rolled back on their 1GB usage cap on their 3G plans for upcoming G1 Android customers, instead going to a hold-up-while-we-figure-this-out route. The statement they give now states that they can reduce throughput for "a small fraction" of users who are using too much data, but exact terms and limits are still being reviewed before they're finalized.

Whether or not such a two-sided conflict will actually play out in the larger mobile-phone industry, today Android vs. iPhone is the battle raging in the mind of every fanboy, gadget geek—and software developer. Since it has all the right themes for a Tolkien-esque epic whose outcome largely rests with small, furry-footed but pure-hearted creatures—developers—we asked the developers of popular mobile apps such as Pandora, TuneWiki and Instinctiv Shuffle, mostly people working on both platforms, to tell us whether it's better to write for the no-strings-attached open Android or the more popular but catch-prone iPhone. Android may not be an overnight success, but iPhone had better watch its back.
Android: iPhone's Refugee Camp
While Android's open approach undoubtedly led some developers to pick it over the iPhone from the start, Apple's byzantine approval process and perhaps anti-competitive protection of its own apps—Podcaster and MailWrangler being two of the most prominent—have definitely driven some devs into Android's open arms, or at least made them stare longingly at it.
One such dev was the maker of the ridiculously popular Instictiv Shuffle app for jailbroken iPhones. Currently, iPhone apps aren't allowed to touch a user's music or iTunes functionality in any way. Instinctiv CEO Justin Smithline told us that "the minute we found out about the restrictions of the SDK...we started up an Android effort." Nevertheless it was clear in our interview that they loved the iPhone platform, using the word "amazing" more than once to talk about it.
Free But Not Equal
One of the original dustups around Android was that the 50 finalists in the Android Developer Challenge received early, privileged access to SDK updates that the rest of the developer community didn't get. While it makes sense that Google would want to fast-track Android's potential killer apps in time for the launch, it also goes against Android's atmosphere of openness.
It seems like there is some favoritism—whether it's toward specific devs or just toward the best apps is uncertain. TuneWiki is a finalist and one of Android's 10 most exciting apps. Amidst complaints about the lack of updates to Android's SDK until the recent 0.9 release and Google's secrecy, TuneWiki CEO Amnon Sarig told us that "I cannot say good enough things to say how [Google] treated us. They gave us whatever we wanted. They want us to succeed."
Since TuneWiki looks like it'll be a fantastic app, it's hard to argue with this—why shouldn't Google devote the most resources to the best and brightest, the stuff that'll make its platform shine? Logically, it should, given how much of the platform's success ultimately lies in the hands of developers. Depending on how you see Android's raison d'tre, that might be deeply troubling philosophically, on the other hand.
Nuts and Bolts
One thing that every developer we talked to pretty much agreed about is that coding for Android is not exactly warm robotic apple pie. While it's commonly assumed that Android development is done using run-of-the-mill Java, the developer of BreadCrumbz—a very cool image-based navigation app that's one of the 50 finalists, told us that the Android framework is actually "very different" from a regular Java stack, so that even "experienced Java developers still need to learn." TuneWiki's devs agreed that there's a learning curve, but both said that since it's still Java at the end of the day, it's a short one.
Instinctiv was more down on Android Java, compared to iPhone OS X, when it came to porting their app. When we talked to them before the release of the 0.9 SDK, they said that "Android is a mobile OS unlike the iPhone system, which is really kind of a desktop OS." Because of Java, they lamented that it'll be hard for Instinctiv Shuffle to do any really heavy lifting without bogging the system down, so they didn't think they'll be able to make it "as personalized" as the admittedly outlawed iPhone version.
Access to hardware appears to be much better than with the iPhone SDK, even though BreadCrumbz's Amos Yoffe says that Android "doesn't let you access the hardware directly, you go through Java APIs which are abstracted from the hardware." He still says that it's "pretty good." TuneWiki devs raved that "Android doesn't sandbox you like Apple does, so you have more flexibility." Apps run in the background just fine, battery drain issues aside. And conversely to this freedom, security policies and threats should be interesting (and maybe terrifying for nail-biter types) to watch develop, though at the start, Android seems to strike a good balance between security and freedom (insert current events political joke here).
Flexibility is a huge thing for Android. One of its strongest points—that it's going to run on a ton of phones with a rainbow of specs—might also prove to be one of its weak points, and perhaps the biggest challenge for developers. TuneWiki's Sarig said that since the Dev challenge only provided them with a single set of specs, no one's had to deal with the issue yet. It's definitely looming, however.
He admits that they're going to "have to scale back for less powerful handsets," though he doesn't know to what extent, since no one's seen the pile-of-rusted-bolts end of the Android hardware scale. BreadCrumbz's Yoffe says that "it's a bit early to say" if performance variance between handsets will be an issue, no one will really know "until we get our hands on real Android hardware." The G1's hodgepodge of interface methods—touchscreen, QWERTY and trackball—perhaps not so coincidentally gives developers a chance to experiment with multiple ways to interact with their app using a single device, though having to account for them all necessarily adds layers of complexity and consideration to creating apps.
Android vs. iPhone: The Final Battle
Pandora CTO Tom Conrad, who famously said "I need Android like I need a hole in the head," actually takes a more measured approach to the platform war. He told us that "Generally, when I look at Android and the challenges we faced bringing Pandora to handsets," it doesn't seem to solve them. "It just adds another one to the mix."
Critical for Android's success is an easy-to-use app store and the killer apps to stock it. Conrad noted that while Pandora had been on a number of low-end phones for over two years, within 24 hours, their iPhone app had surpassed all of those users combined. They are currently taking a wait-and-see approach with Android, though he stressed that "absolutely, we want Pandora to be everywhere there are listeners." TuneWiki similarly wants to achieve multi-platform ubiquity, though they're much more juiced about both the iPhone and Android, saying, "We love them both."
Whoever wins, it looks like the carriers will lose. Every dev agreed that the iPhone sparked a revolution that is changing the way US carriers operate. Android is a part of that now, and the two, even locked in competition, will push that revolution further. In that sense, at least, we all win something.

Neither mobile banking apps nor mobile payment technologies are anything new, but the depth of Visa's newfound commitment to anything and everything mobile here is pretty unique. The company has announced a slew of initiatives to make it as frighteningly easy as possible for cardholders to do cool things with their accounts right from their phones starting with the launch of the Nokia 6212 Classic next month, which will serve up NFC-based contactless payments, cardholder-to-cardholder transfers, and realtime account alerts (subject to issuing bank availability). Meanwhile, they've wasted no time jumping on the Android bandwagon, revealing that they've hooked up with Chase to offer an Android app that delivers notifications, merchant "offers," and a location-based search of nearby retailers that accept Visa cards (which is pretty much all of them in our experience). If the Chase trial pans out, Visa plans to shop the Android app around to other issuing banks. Finally, there's also a new web-based mobile money transfer pilot going down that's scheduled to kick off around the end of the year involving several banks and "as many as" 6,000 cardholders; what are the odds that those 6,000 are going to be transferring much money among each other, though?

If you can't get your goods into China via the front door, there's always the back. Apple is now selling its iPhone 3G unlocked via its on-line Apple Store in Hong Kong. The 8GB model sells for HK$5,500 (about US$694) or HK$6,200 (about $797) for the 16 gigger. Already available since July 11th with a local Hutchison Telecommunications contract, this is the first time that Apple has sold its device unlocked in Hong Kong:
"iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."
Unfortunately for the 1 billion mainland Chinese, the terms and conditions limit sales to those in Hong Kong only -- not that the gray market cares about T&Cs. It'll be interesting to see if Apple extends the unlocking more broadly (presumably as exclusivity deals expire) or if this is strictly a local phenomena, perhaps in direct response to having its WiFi and the imperialistic 3G gutted from handsets sold under Apple's rumored China Mobile deal.

Smartphone game publisher Astraware has let us know that they're looking for more S60 owners to take part in their beta testing. Their S60 version of shoot-em-up Platypus had some compatibility snags when it launched recently, so if you want to help fix this kind of thing and get games free in the process head on over to the Astraware beta testing forum to find out more. They also do games for UIQ3 and most other smartphone platforms too so you may want to apply even if you're not an S60 owner.

On my WinXP laptop, Foxit Reader is my preferred PDF reader because it's fast, it's slick and doesn't hog memory like crazy. Although the future of UIQ is uncertain, some developers are still showing support to this platform. This 1.00 Beta version enables you to view PDF files easily on Symbian UIQ 3.X devices. With small size, fast launch speed and friendly user interface, Foxit Reader for UIQ 3.x is recommended and it's FREE! More from me and the developer below the break.

RipDev has released the Installer 4.0b8 publically! This is the last update since the 4.0b6 which removed quite a few bugs. The reason they mention for the late release being swamped with work.
This new version switches to libcurl from the stock Foundation URL loading classes, which means more lightweight CPU and memory footprint and, more importantly, resumable file transfers. They also mention that there will be some more bug fixes.
Another great thing is that they have changed the functioning of the feature page. Now the featured page has featured stuff in it's true sense. I mean to say that now it displays the most popular (number of installations) packages on the featured page. Though there will be a few sponsored package too (for obvious reasons ) but they will be easily distinguishable and will be less in.

Once again iPhone-Dev has jailbroken Apple's latest iPhone firmware before it has been released. Firmware version 2.2 Beta 1 was seeded to developers just over a day ago but is still vulnerable to pwnage. Below is a screenie of Terminal running on firmware 2.2 Beta 1.
Some nifty info regarding this newest firmware. With firmware 2.2 beta 1 Apple follows the a familiar pattern of naming their firmware versions. Remember they have been "Alpine" for awhile now -- 2.2 Beta 1 is called "Timberline." Also to note Apple has returned to putting expiry dates on their beta..

We're going down our "things that absolutely must change on the iPhone" list, and yeah, "redo the Safari toolbar" isn't anywhere on there. Not even at the very bottom. Cupertino works in mysterious ways, though, and they've decided in firmware 2.2 that it's time to muck with the positioning of the text boxes so that the address bar and search bar both appear at all times without needing to first tap in the area. They've also moved the refresh button inside the address bar itself, which should truly revolutionize our browsing experience yet again. Apple, screw copy / paste -- we're officially stoked.

Apple has committed to work with the state of Massachusetts to use its VoiceOver technology from Mac OS X to make its iTunes and iPod ecosystem fully usable for the blind. Before the agreement, Apple had already been making strides: VoiceOver and Braille support for OS X and closed captioning for iPod and Apple TV have already been implemented to a degree. But Apple's taking it even further.

The best SatNav app for Symbian [in Asri's opinion! - Ed], Garmin Mobile XT, just reached version 5.0. The new version looks like a totally new app because the interface has been redesigned and the speed in loading map data is also greatly improved. Both S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3 users can now enjoy the new version.

Palm claimed it was going to finalize the new operating system, codenamed Nova, by late 2008 and release devices in early 2009. That has changed.
"In a conference call with industry analysts yesterday, Palm's CEO promised that devices running its next operating system would be on the market by the middle of next year. On the surface this might seem like good news, but for many months this company has been committing to having smartphones running Palm OS II out in early 2009. The fact that it has switched its language is a sign that the release of this operating system has almost certainly slipped a bit."

You will see the above error from now if you review any app without purchasing.
This is a big reform in the review system of AppStore. There has been complaints about some useless reviews which made the position and sales of apps declined in the store. Finally, Apple has decided to change this faulty system. For this, they have made it mandatory to buy the app before you review it so you can't just write idiotic reviews or overcome your anger...

Ever get so pissed at your cell phone that you just want to chuck it into the trash? If Sony Ericsson's GreenHeart phone ever sees the light of day, you'll be able to do it, and nature will take care of the rest. For now, the phone is a concept (aren't they always?), but the designers are hoping to inspire other manufacturers with its environmentally-friendly feature set. Since you're asking, that entails bio-plastic, recycled plastic, HTML docs instead of printed ones, and a zero charger with 3.5mW of standby power. It ain't too sexy, sure, but this puppy decomposes with the best of them

It's been a little while since we've heard from the normally very talkative Carl Freer, but the chief Gizmondo booster has now finally returned with a few new tidbits of information about the gaming handheld, which we know you've all been patiently waiting for. Most interestingly, but not surprisingly, Freer made no mention of that supposed end of 2008 release date, with him instead saying that the company plans to release the handheld's full spec list by the end of October, and that they plan to have "volume availability" of the handled by the second quarter of 2009 -- in Europe, at least. In other news, he also confirmed that the device would boast an improved camera, and that they're even planning their "own version of the Apple App Store," which would seem to be a must considering that they're apparently also going to be relying exclusively on indie developers this time around.

When a major player like Google comes up with a new mobile operating system that's better than the competition and is totally free, you would certainly expect handset manufacturers to be interested. But there's interested, and then there's interested. After lingering for nearly a year in the former category Motorola is now firmly moving to the latter, hiring and headhunting in an effort to build up a 350-person group entirely focused on development of Android phones. The company was one of the original members of the Open Handset Alliance, but seems to have waited for the release buzz from HTC's G1 before diving in head-first. There's talk that Nokia (and its "real phones") may be feeling the vibrations too, allegedly forming an internal team to do the same -- on the down low.

From Meninos, the same designers who brought you the Samuel L. Jackson hard drive cases, these iPhone coasters have harnessed fanboy obsession into practical functionality—to protect your table from dangerous glass condensation. Constructed of thin plywood wrapped in a vinyl decal and bottomed in rubber, the 3.34" coasters come bundled in a pack of 16 for $60. Sadly, there's no support for downloadable coaster apps at this time

THQ today announces that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is now available on mobile handsets the world over. This includes the iPhone, where it has been lurking for quite awhile, Nokia's N-Gage gaming platform, and more than 850 different cellular handsets. Should you pick it up? Well Star Wars plus iPhone equals extra nerd chic of course, and Star Wars plus N-Gage equals you might as well, you obviously went out of your way for an N-Gage platform supporting phone.
As for the remaining 850 handsets, this is a good time to check and see if your phone needs upgrading. If yours isn't one of the 850 you obviously need to step up to a newer model, unless that military field phone is part of your whole campy, retro vibe.

I don't need to be able to play Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords on anything else, okay? It's already eaten away at my life on the DS, PSP, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, mobile phone, and PC to the point where every month I have at least one Puzzle Quest-related dream. Now TransGaming has announced their expansion into the Apple portable space with Puzzle Quest for the iPhone / iPod Touch.
“It has been a wild and exciting ride for us at D3Publisher to watch Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords progress from a unique release on handheld platforms to one of the most beloved puzzle game franchises of today, raising demand from gamers everywhere to be able to play it on their platform of choice,” said Yoji Takenaka, President and Chief Executive Officer of North America and Europe, D3Publisher.
Gah! I just want to hug this man and punch him at the same time, but not as much as Crecente, who actually contacted both companies and harassed them about making the port. Thanks, Brian. Look for Puzzle Quest to hit the iPhone and iPod Touch later this fall, at which point I will begin spending all my time in the bathroom.

Believe it or not, this iPod touch is alive after being crushed by a pickup truck almost beyond the point of no return And I don't mean "alive" as in a Connect-it-to-your-computer-and-see-if-it's-still-functioning kind of way. I mean that it actually works, screen included.
And it actually looks good below all that shattered glass. It will probably cut your fingertips though, which is good for your criminal record but bad for your iPod touch's blood tolerance.

Thanks to ratkat for the tipoff, but vtap have released a native S60 version of their 'videos from everywhere' client. This forms a competitor to the likes of emTube and Mobitubia - and of course to YouTube's own mobile client. vtap's unique selling point is that it aggregates from more than just YouTube. Look out for a video head to head between these four different systems in the near future.

"T-Mobile G1 manufacturer HTC plans to develop more handsets based on Android. It maintain this will not affect its Windows Mobile business - the Google platform and Microsoft's are 'complementary', it claimed. According to a report by DigiTimes, John Wang, Chief Marketing Officer at HTC, said that both systems have their merits, and so handsets based on either platform will appeal to different users."
I'm sure we can all agree that the only way this newest HTC Android enabled device is 'complimentary' to Windows Mobile is due to how ugly it is and the wonders it will do for pushing users to the new Touch family of devices! All kidding aside, I have to agree with HTC on this one. Google Android and Windows Mobile are not even in the same league. Both platforms target completely different groups of consumers and where the Windows Mobile camp has been screaming at the top of their lungs for years hoping Microsoft will release a more consumer friendly version of their flagship mobile operating system, nothing has come of it at all. Even being as ugly as the T-Mobile G1 is, it will still sell a lot of handsets. This device is target to the general consumer and doesn't focus on the business aspect and because of that I can't take three steps outside of my front door without hearing someone talking about the T-Mobile G1 or having them ask me about it.
HTC will now be able to create new super sleek consumer friendly devices and at the same time, continue to cater to the enterprise and enthusiast crowd. This is the best of both worlds for HTC. Hopefully this will be a good swift kick in the posterior to make Microsoft hustle to bring us something really cool in Windows Mobile 7.

Currently in the U.S. and across the world the iPhone is a GSM network only device. That means that even unlocked you can not run the iPhone on the Verizon network which is CDMA. This may change soon -- as early as Macworld 2009. Where does this come from? A Verizon tipster told 9to5mac that "Apple will be announcing iPhones for Verizon Wireless in 2009, perhaps as early Macworld 2009."
While there are many reasons that this rumor could be true we think these are the big ones:
Apple has been looking for EVDO and CDMA engineers with their job listings. You can check out these job listings

Prepare to qualify! Namco Networks, the mobile game development and publishing arm of good old Namco Bandai has futzed around with a classic racing title and dropped it on the iPhone for a whole new generation (read: market) of gamers to enjoy. Pole Position: Remix takes the primitive gameplay of the original Pole Position, tacks on some rather nifty new controls, and charges you $9.99 for the privilege of playing it.
“Pole Position: Remix is a fun and intuitive game that anyone can take for a spin,” says Scott Rubin, senior vice president, Namco Networks. “Similar to playing a racing game in an arcade, Pole Position: Remix makes you feel as if you are actually getting behind the wheel and racing on the track, screeching around turns and breaking to avoid a crash.”
In a fit of nostalgia I downloaded the game this morning. It's solid, and the controls are fun, both the tilt steering and the on-screen thumb-controlled steering wheel options. It's just the gameplay really hasn't aged all that well. I need some sort of nostalgia alarm that locks my wallet when the feeling hits. If you just can't resist, PP:Remix is now available at an Apple Apps Store near you.

One of the reasons you're going to see Android on a ton of phones—aside from Google's juggernautical influence—isn't because of its ass-beating potential, but because hardware makers don't have to pay anything for it. They do have to pay for Windows Mobile, the other major free-floating smartphone OS, on the other hand, and Steve Ballmer is saying it's going to stay that way, even as RIM's BlackBerry passes it in marketshare. Of course, by the time Windows Mobile 7 finally, finally enters a much more hostile mobile world, he could be singing something way different.
