Microsoft is the latest tech giant rumoured to be developing a smart watch product - which could arrive next year.
It joins the likes of Apple which is reportedly producing an iWatch product, while the Sony SmartWatch 2 will hit UK shelves later this year and a Samsung smart watch is also in development.
Microsoft placed orders for 1.5-inch screens a few weeks ago and the product is already in the prototype stage, reports AmongTech. The watch will allegedly be available in a range of colours including blue, red, yellow, black, white and gray, with removable wrist bands.
It's said to be made from a type of Oxynitride aluminium which is 80 per cent transparent but around three or four times tougher than glass. Current manufacturing costs are said to be around $20,000 (Ł13,000) per square metre.
It could have its own version of Windows 8, 4G technology and 6GB of storage, and be able to communicate with smartphones.
Reports suggest the team behind Microsoft's Surface tablets are working on the Microsoft smart watch.

The latest version of the Google Maps app includes full support for iPad, plus developers can now add Street View and indoor floor plans to their own creations.
Google Maps now works with all devices running iOS 6 - the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. It sports a cleaner look and feel, plus search results display red icons for locations you're looking for.
New Info Sheets let users access specific information on each location including reviews and pictures, while the Explore feature lists nearby places of interest such as restaurants and shopping centres.
Dynamic Map Rerouting is not yet available on the iOS version, although it is on the Android version, reports Wired. This uses the latest traffic information to reroute users around busy areas. Google says it is "coming soon" to iOS. The iOS version is also getting directions for bicycles, too.
Version 1.4 of the developer kit for iOS maps also lets app makers add Street View imagery and indoor floor plans to their creations.

Apple is running a series of summer promotions for students looking to buy a device before they head to university.
Those who buy an iPhone or iPad for university before September 6th will receive a Ł35 App Store Gift Card, while customers who purchase a new Mac will receive a Ł70 gift card.
Plus, Apple says consumers can save up to Ł183 with "education pricing" on new Macs.
Online orders placed for iPhones, iPads or Macs will include free shipping, as will 'study essentials' including organisers, bags and carry cases.
To qualify for the discounts, the customer must be a university student, a student accepted to a university, a parent buying for a university student or a faculty or staff member.
Apple is also targeting students directly in the offer.
"You can use your iPhone to revise for exams, take notes and stay organised," read a statement. "Using Pages, Numbers and Keynote, you can have anytime access to your projects and presentations. And when it’s time to kick back, you can tweet, play games and even order a pizza."

The BackBerry A10’s specs have been leaked, showing it will have a bigger battery and a faster processor than the Z10.
A member of CrackBerry’s forum posted a screen grab which appears to be taken from a confidential BlackBerry document. It shows most of the A10’s specs including 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 5-inch OLED 1280x720 display, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, and a 2800mAh battery.
In comparison, the Z10 has a 4.2-inch display, 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and a 1800mAh battery.
Last month, Sprint Nextel executive Lois Eichelberger ***an told CNET that the A10 will be coming to the carrier ‘during the holidays’.

Apple makes a point of not giving away a single drop of info prior to launching products – which tends to further prod the rumour dragon, which periodically belches out potential fiery clues as to what the next gizmo will be. If you’ll pardon the unpleasant imagery.
Now, some of these turn out to be duff leads of course – but often, as was with the iPhone 5, a lot of the technical specifications do end up leaking ahead of the launch. So those eager to find out what Apple has up its sleeve for the iPhone 6 may well find the answer in the glut of speculation and technical clues fluttering around the web.
The iPhone 6 isn’t to be confused with the iPhone 5S – which again is a totally unconfirmed smartphone, and which solidify the rumblings that perhaps Apple will make a cheaper iPhone. This may also be called the iPod Nano. Or quite possibly it never has or will exist – but hey ho, that’s the fuzzy world of tech rumours.
We’ve gathered together what we think are the most likely iPhone 6 rumours, and we’ll keep this updated as more clues emerge.
iPhone 6 release date
Apple has already held an event showing off its next mobile operating system iOS 7, featuring a brand new look and a bunch of new features. The release date has been set for the fall (that’s Autumn for UK readers), and as several nose tappers have pointed out it would seem to make logical sense for this to emerge alongside the iPhone 6.
Unfortunately ‘fall’ is a fairly vague term, occupying a quarter of the annual calendar as it does.
Rumours of a more specific date are out there, however. Most of them point to early either September 10th or 20th – quite possibly an announcement taking the former date and the physical launch happening on the latter.
This is largely based on past Apple launch schedules which is a fair enough extrapolation – though we won’t know anything concrete until Apple sends out one of its cryptic invites to the press. And even then, we won’t know exactly what the event is in aid of until Tim Cook pops out out on stage.
iPhone 6 specs
It’s worth pointing out when pouring over tech specs for gadgets, despite their huge popularity Apple iPhones are often not the most advanced on the market when it comes to hardware, often surpassed by Samsung’s Galaxy S range, to name one.
That said, a number or rumours surrounding what components will make up the iPhone 6 have been doing the rounds.
A quad core processor is widely expected in order to keep up with the competition – some versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 have eight cores.
Some musings put the specific processor at 1.2GHz, alongside 2GB of RAM. But
You could even see some of the powerful iPad hardware, like the graphics components, turning up in the iPhone 6.
Usually iPhones come in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions – however the last iPad had a 128GB version, which could be replicated in the iPhone 6.
In terms of connectivity, 4G LTE seems inevitable.
iPhone 6 casing
There is talk of the iPhone 6 (or iPhone 5S) coming in different colours this time round, breaking with iPhone design traditions. Perhaps in line with the iPod Nano range, which come in a variety of colours.
We’d say this is veering towards the less likely end of the rumour scale, but you never know. Nokia seemed to push the coloured chassis as a leading USP of its recent 920 and 820 smartphones, so perhaps Apple took note.
Some rumours even point the phone have a translucent case – which we’d place even further towards the less likely end.

Limbo project offers a 'new lifestyle' as an extension of the smartphone.
Apple's iWatch is rumoured to be experiencing engineering problems, which may prompt Tim Cook to scrap the device entirely.
And with wrist phones quite the hot topic, a concept for a new flexible 6mm-thick smartphone that transforms it into a smart watch has been unveiled.
The recently designed 'Limbo' phone would be made up of materials with elastic properties and would be powered by Android.
Three powerful magnets on the back of the device would connect it to the wrist cradle, which is designed to not put any pressure on the wrist by using similar materials to the device.
The gadget would contain an 8MP camera on the back and a 1.3MP on the front and would be wi-fi, Bluetooth and 5G-enabled. It would also charge wirelessly, similar to the Nokia Lumia.
The general concept of the phone appears to focus on offering ways to live a healthier lifestyle - as it reads blood pressure, and contains a motion sensor that would be activated when mounted onto the wrist, presumably acting as a pedometer.
Not only that, the Smart Healthcare feature reads all the information collected from the blood pressure reader, and - if we're reading the pictures correctly - contacts a hospital if it thinks your health is in danger.
Even though these plans may never come into fruition, the Limbo has still offered a more exciting smart watch concept to compete with the Androidly than Apple or any of its counterparts have, so kudos for that.

Microsoft OS loses steam in Australia, but picks up in the UK.
Windows Phone-powered devices initially proved to be very popular in the down under market, but sales have drastically dropped over the last year and a half. Meanwhile the UK seems to be slowly warming to Microsoft handsets, seeing an increase to 1.31 per cent of all UK mobile web traffic, according to 51Degrees.mobi.
The OS makes up around seven per cent of UK sales from the last three months compared to 4.3 per cent during the same period in 2012.
US sales of Windows smartphones has also experienced a respectable 0.9 per cent growth.
At the beginning of 2012, mobile web traffic from Windows Phones in Australia was at around 1.2 per cent compared to below one per cent in the UK. It continued to rise at a rapid rate in the land of Oz to reach 1.4 per cent, and 1.2 per cent in Blighty.
Then around April 2012, interest in its devices seemed to go walkabout levelling with the UK in June at about 1.5 per cent and continually decreasing to about 0.6 per cent in June this year.
The UK, however, saw Windows Phone mobile web traffic grow and grow to hit an impressive 1.3 per cent in June 2013.
Have a look at 51Degrees data to see how the results panned out over the year.

Continues Hasbro marketing partnership to make gameplay more interactive with real world toys that connect to the game.
Rovio's November 2012-released Angry Birds Star Warsclimbed its way to the top of the App Store in a record two and half hours, and has gone on to smash past 100 million total downloads.
Looking to build on the success, Rovio has confirmedAngry Birds Star Wars II today (July 15th), and expectant fans can diarise September 19th as the release date.
Star Wars II will follow the story of the original three prequel Star Wars films, which means brand new characters and the option to 'Join the Pork Side' and play as the evil pigs.
Rovio recently pledged to continue working with Hasbro on consumer products and has integrated the toy maker's Telepods technology into the game.
Players will be able to collect 30 Telepod figures and scan the characters from the physical world and into the digital world via the mobile device's camera.
Jami Laes, EVP of games at Rovio Entertainment, said: "Angry Birds Star Wars was a blockbuster hit for us and Lucasfilm with over 100 million downloads since its release. Some of the most amazing character additions are versions of young Anakin, Mace Windu and Darth Maul."
Hasbro is no stranger to mobile games and purchased a 70 per cent share of Backflip Studios for $112m last week.

The saga of the application-signing flaw affecting Google's Android mobile phones took another turn Tuesday when a Silicon Valley startup teamed with graduate students from Northeastern University in Boston to offer their own fix-it tool for hundreds of millions of Android phones that have been left without access to Google's official patch. Duo Security announced the availability of an Android utility dubbed 'ReKey' on Tuesday. The tool allows users to patch the so-called 'Master Key' vulnerability on Android devices, even in the absence of a security update from Android handset makers and carriers who service the phones, according to a post on the Duo Security blog. Jon Oberheide, the CTO of Duo Security, said that ReKey provides an in-memory patch for the master key vulnerability, dynamically instrumenting the Dalvik bytecode routines where the vulnerability originates, patching it in-memory. Oberheide said that ReKey will also 'hook' (or monitor) those routines to notify you if any malicious applications attempt to exploit the vulnerability. Despite the availability of a patch since March, many Android users remain vulnerable to attacks that take advantage of the application signing flaw. That is because Android handset makers have been slow to issue updates for their handsets. For platforms (HTC and Samsung) that have been patched, carriers delayed the rollout to customers further. 'The security of Android devices worldwide is paralyzed by the slow patching practices of mobile carriers and other parties in the Android ecosystem,' said Oberheide. However, the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem is significant enough that it is no longer feasible for Google to take over responsibility for distributing patches. Third parties may need to step in to fill the void."A related article makes the case that the release of the Master Key vulnerability started an important conversation within the open source community.

BitMonster has unveiled its next iOS game Gunner Z, a new shooter that’s a definite change in tone from its debut mobile game, Lili.Gunner Z will ask players to create and customise their own fleet of AC-HMV Gun Trucks in order to take on an army of undead antagonists. It is built in Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 – the tech is described by BitMonster as “a natural fit and allows the creation of console quality games on mobile devices.”The studio was formed by six former Epic Games developers last year, and its debut release, family-friendly adventure Lili, was an App Store hit.

The technology company that provided Microsoft with the original Kinect sensor is reportedly being courted by a pair of rival companies.
VentureBeat translates a report from Israeli outlet Cacalist, which states Apple, Sony and Samsung have met with manufacturer PrimeSense regarding the acquisition of tech similar to that of the Kinect.
Apple specifically paid a visit to the Tel Aviv headquarters for a tour – the firm already owns a trio of Israel-based R&D facilities.
Neither Apple nor Sony has commented on the report at this point, while a PrimeSense rep gave the ‘no comment’ comment to Mashable:
"We can't comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing and we’re not commenting on rumors."
Microsoft itself has moved on from PrimeSense in regards to the latest in its Kinect line, working with a new tech manufacturer for the Xbox One model.

In the quest for the ultimate Android device, [白い熊] on the XDA developers forum created an awe-inspiring monstrosity that gives his Galaxy Note II 288 Gigs of storage and enough battery to theoretically last three and a half months.
First, the storage: the phone can now store movies, videos, apps, and music on an incredibly capacious 256 Gig SD card. Yes, this card currently sells for about $500, but having that much storage space effectively turns the Note into a portable hard drive running Android.
The battery comes direct from an eBay listing that advertises 8500 mAh inside a huge Li-ion battery. It’s extremely doubtful this battery will live up to the stated rating, but even if the new battery has twice the capacity as the stock battery [白い熊] is looking at about 10 weeks of standby time.
Yes, it’s just parts bought online and thrown together, but you really have to admire the sheer ostentatiousness of this phone.

It's the HTC One, except mini.
The HTC One Mini is like a tiny twin brother to the HTC One, sharing the same style and material - everything really, except the size.
The stat? unveil comes just after HTC released an infographic on some amazing small facts, indicating that we were soon to be seeing its ikkle phone.
The new model has a 4.3-inch display and a slimmer body, but still contains the dual front-facing speakers and built-in amps enhancing the sound, and is lovingly wrapped in the sleek metal jacket.
The smaller screen has been built especially for single-handed operation, making it a more convenient handheld device compared to some of its larger counterparts, and perfect for those of us with itty-bitty mitties.
The HTC Blinkfeed, aka 'homepage' of the phone, updates automatically every time you wake your device up. The home screen can be customised so it brings up the news you want to see first whether that be pictures from Facebook, the news, sport or blogs.
HTC Zoe brings your photo album to life, by choosing what it thinks are the highlights of a series of photos and pulling them together in a 30-second show, playing your desired soundtrack over the top.
It has been rumoured that the HTC One Mini will be released around August but an official date is yet to be announced. Either way, it will be interesting to see if it affects sales of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

Sales for paid titles also rise on back of special deal
Epic’s Infinity Blade II was downloaded 5.7m times as part of Apple’s free-app promo during the App Store’s anniversary celebration.
AllThingsD reports the figure was accumulated over a week, with 1.7m of the downloads taking place on the first day alone. The game has now been downloaded nearly 50m times since it launched in December 2011.
Epic also saw a 2.5 per cent week-over-week rise in sales for the original Infinity Blade, and sales for the Infinity Blade: Awakening e-book went up 70 per cent – despite neither being discounted or directly involved in the promotion.
Infinity Blade: Dungeons was to be the next in line for the franchise, but was recently cancelled due to the closing of the game’s developer Impossible Studios.

How a phone manufacturer making a somewhat successful come-back can shoot itself in the foot: Marc "van Hauser" Heuse, who works for German technology magazine Heise, has discovered that immediately after setting up an email account on Blackberry 10 OS, full credentials for that account are sent to Research In Motion, the Canadian Blackberry manufacturer. Shortly after performing the set-up, the first successful connections from a server located within the RIM domain appear in the mail server's logs. (Most of the story in English, some comments in German.) At least according to German law, this is completely illegal, as the phone's user does not get a single indication or notice of what is being done."

GlassUp, an Italian startup, has started taking pre-orders on Indiegogo for an Android eyewear display system billed as a simpler, lower-cost alternative to Google Glass. The GlassUp device is a receive-only Bluetooth accessory to a nearby mobile device, providing a monochrome, 320 x 240-pixel augmented reality display of incoming messages and notifications. GlassUp was unveiled at CeBit in March, and is now up for crowdfunding on Indiegogo, where pre-sales opened today ranging from $199 to $399, depending on whether it's a pre-release, pre-production, or full-production version. This is less than a quarter the price of the $1,500 Google Glass Developer Edition. Already almost two years in development, GlassUp is expected to ship to presales customers in Feb. 2014, around the same time Google Glass is expected to ship in commercial production form."And for Google Glass itself, there's at least one project to bring Google's own hardware an alternative operating system.

Google Ventures partner Rich Miner says regular users don't notice the issue
[h=3]Google[/h]
In a tech forum hosted by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council, Google Ventures partner and Android co-founder Rich Miner said that the fragmentation problem faced by the mobile OS is "an overblown issue."
"I think this is a bit of an overblown issue, frankly," said Miner, according to a report by Xconomy. "Us techies read the blogs and know what features we may be missing. I think if you asked a consumer, 'Do you feel like your phone OS needs to be updated today?' they're pretty happy with the results and the performance they're seeing. So I'm not sure it's a major issue."
Miner said fragmentation will always be a minor problem with the number of Android devices activated each day.
"Don't forget, there are 1.5 million Android phones being activated every single day. There are 900 million devices out in the market," he explained.
Google has done its best to fix the issue and it looks like they may be succeeding. According to stats released by the company recently, the latest version of Android, 4.1+ Jelly Bean, is now on 37.9 percent of active devices. This means the new version has finally surpassed Android's most popular version, 2.3 Gingerbread, which still sits at 34.1 percent. Gingerbread was first released in December 2010.

Sprint just recently announced that it will be offering the HTC 8XT on July 19th, but it turns out it's not the only option for those interested the phone. Upstart Ting has just announced that it is now taking pre-orders for the device, making it the first Windows Phone device available on the MVNO. Not many surprises beyond that, as you might expect -- the device is available off-contract per usual (running $373), and the phone itself is the same as you'll find on Sprint, including a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, 8 megapixel camera and HTC's trademark "BoomSound." Those looking for a different take on Windows Phone can also look for an unspecified Samsung ATIV device to be available on Ting sometime soon.

The LG Optimus F3 doesn't make much sense on Sprint, where a preference for contract pricing leaves the F3 competing with more advanced devices. It's a good thing that the 4-inch Android phone has launched on Sprint's contract-free Virgin Mobile brand, then. The smaller carrier's version offers everything we've seen before, including LTE, but costs just $180 up front -- a big discount over both the $250 Sprint variant and most 4G phones at Virgin. Combined with cheaper plans, Virgin's Optimus F3 should be a much better deal for those who want LTE on the cheap.

It's easy to find running apps that offer goals -- it's harder to find one that inspires you to run in the first place. RunKeeper wants to be that motivator, and it just overhauled the training section of its iOS app to match. The refresh takes broad, skill-based programs from sites like Greatist and breaks them down into more realistic daily objectives, such as running a little bit further or taking a break. There's also a steady stream of tips for staying healthy between sessions. RunKeeper hasn't said when Android-bound athletes will get the new training routines, but their iPhone-owning counterparts can grab the update at the source link.

Now that Android has received that new Chrome update, it's time for iOS users to get some of that love as well. Google has released a Chrome for iOS update that introduces improved integration with other Google apps -- signing into Chrome will automatically prompt you to sign in to other apps like YouTube, Google+ and Google Drive. You can also set up a preference where all directions links in the browser will lead to the Google Maps app instead. Aside from the tighter integration, the new iOS update also introduces fullscreen browsing on the iPad, access to your full browser history and an experimental data compression service that promises faster and more secure browsing. So if you're a fan of that alternative iOS browser from Mountain View, go on and download the update from the source link below.

Third-party apps have begun trickling out for Glass, but if Google expects thousands of add-ons to make their way to the public, it's going to need a searchable database of available downloads. And that structure could very well come in the form of a Glass-optimized Play Store. Android and Me noticed a "Google Glass 1" entry pop up in the device field following Mountain View's Play refresh that hit the web last night. It's not possible to push apps directly to the wearable at the moment -- the Glass option is not currently live -- but it's entirely possible that the device could be selectable in the near future. Take a closer look in the screenshot at the source link below.

VideoLAN revealed some very exciting news today: VLC for iOS will be back in Apple's App Store by tomorrow (July 19). The company tells TNW the app will be available for free worldwide, requires iOS 5.1 or later, as well supports the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. As you can expect, VLC for iOS version 2.0 will be open-source. This time, however, its code will be available online (also by tomorrow), bi-licensed under both the Mozilla Public License Version 2 as well as the GNU General Public License Version 2 or later."

Lucky Frame’s new release Gentlemen! has been downloaded illegally 2,462 times on Android as of this morning, with just eight copies sold legitimately. It’s the first time the Edinburgh indie has released a game on Android, where piracy is much more widespread than on iOS.“On our previous [iOS] games Bad Hotel and Wave Trip, piracy rates were generally around 20 per cent,” said Lucky Frame director Yann Seznec told us. “That is to say, for every 100 copies sold there were about 20 pirated copies.”It hasn’t made the Edinburgh indie think twice about releasing its future titles on Android, though. “We made Gentlemen! in Unity, and I think most, if not all, of our future game projects will be made in Unity, so it’s not significantly more work for us to release games for Android as well as iOS and other platforms,” continued Seznec. “I think we might re-think how we approach Android slightly – this is only our first Android release – but it doesn’t feel right to limit who can play our game because it gets pirated.”“Also, to be totally clear, we are really pleased that people are playing our game.” he added. “The people who are pirating the game are clearly really enjoying it, we’re getting great play stats and that makes us really happy.”Lucky Frame has sold 154 copies of the game to date on iPad – you can read our Gentlemen! reviewthrough the link.

Ouya’s arrival was far from a typical home console launch, but that’s fitting for a new piece of hardware determined to do things differently. Some reports from the US suggests that sales have been ‘light’, but retail alone won’t tell the full story of Ouya’s installed base – over 58,000 Kickstarter backers will have received their consoles already, and Ouya is also selling consoles direct through its website. We can, however, get real sales figures from the developers that have released games on the console.TowerFall, the Ouya exclusive that’s become the console’s flagship launch game, has performed better than expected, says its developer Matt Thorson. “We’ve made about 2000 sales so far at $15 each,” he told us. “So sales have been surprisingly high for a new game on a new console. The game has definitely proven itself on Ouya, I think there’s enough demand to warrant bringing it to PC.“The response has been amazing,” he continued. “A lot of high profile people in games have been praising the game, which is of course fantastic, and there’s been a lot of talk among gamers as well. Launching on Ouya got me a lot of attention, and the sales have been better than expected.”Nimble Quest’s figures from its first week on the Ouya store total 6,508 downloads, 122 purchases and $427 profit, NimbleBit’s David Marsh told us. “We released it on OUYA simply because we were using Unity and it was pretty much a snap to port it,” he added. So it was a fun thing to do, as well as a test of our cross-platform framework.“I would wholeheartedly recommend the OUYA to indie devs that have an existing pipeline to Android and are interested in what the OUYA does. It’s probably not going to be a huge source of income compared to other platforms, but it’s dead easy to submit a game and get it into the store. It’s the only console right now with a truly open store, which makes it interesting and worth supporting if you want to see more open platforms. It’s also a great device to have just to check out all sorts of neat experimental multiplayer games that are already popping up. I think it’s a step in the right direction.”Knife Media describe the release of Red, a twin stick shooter, as “reasonably profitable”.“We broke even within two and a half weeks, whilst sales are currently sitting at just below 400,” co-founder Jack Shiels told us. “Right now that doesn’t seem like a whole lot, but there aren’t a significant amount of Ouyas out in the wild right now. I reckon by year end we will have a clearer picture.”

Kickstarter funded Android console Ouya’s first month on sale in the US has been given a lukewarm assessment by sales tracker NPD.
"Retail sales for Ouya (not counting direct sales through ouya.tv) and were relatively light for a new console," NPD analyst Liam Callahan said, as reported by Joystiq.
"This may be due to the lack of a major marquee title driving consumers to seek out the console, low awareness due to Ouya being a new brand, or low inventory volume due to manufacturing constraints."
It has also been revealed that the until now Ouya exclusive title TowerFall is making the jump to PC although creator Matt Thorson says that this is not due to low sales on the Android platform, stating: “Ouya version is doing great! Just want to expand ”

Betting on Mozilla's mobile operating system? There's a good chance, then, that you're kicking around a Geeksphone, one of the few devices known for running Firefox OS. Owners of the company's Keon and Peak handsets can now manually upgrade their devices to Firefox 1.1, which -- according to enthusiasts on the Geeksphone forums and Twitter -- speeds up boot times, patches an assortment of bugs and tacks on minor navigational and display improvements. Naturally, users interested in trying the build will have to download and flash it themselves. Unsure how to proceed? Check out the Geeksphone forums link at the adjacent source link for tips.

We've reached out to all of the usual suspects, and only one of them hasn't stuck a thumb up and winked when we've asked if it'll be carrying HTC's "diminutive" new smartphone. O2, EE, Vodafone, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse have all confirmed that they'll carry the One mini, while ThreeUK has yet to get back to us. There's no solid information on how much the device will cost on a monthly or one-off basis, but Carphone Warehouse is already accepting sim-free pre-orders for a very plausible Ł380. That same retailer is also saying that the phone is due to arrive on August 9th, but we'll take that assertion with a pinch of environmentally-friendly salt.

Scottish games development luminary Chris Sawyer has redesigned his 1994 management simulation classic Transport Tycoon for touch-screen devices.
[Update: the first five screens of the game can be found below]
PrevNext1 of 5
In partnership with London games studio Origin8 Technologies, Sawyer plans to release the redesigned game on iOS and Android platforms later in 2013.
Little is known of the project, though it is claimed that it aims to "recreate and restore Sawyer's original simulation code, resulting in the deepest, richest simulation game yet seen on mobile".
As well as Transport Tycoon, Sawyer is credited for creating key management games of the '90s, including Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2.
The original was praised by now-defunct games magazine Computer Gaming World as "an addictive, strongly strategic game with great depth, beautiful production values, and fantastic gameplay."
Before his decade-long hiatus from the games industry, one of Sawyer's final games was the PC sim Locomotion. Critics were disappointed with the game.
Apple's iOS platforrn has become a popular destination for classic game revivals. In 2011 Codemasters re-released a Dizzy game for Apple's smartphone platform, and a year later Activision Leeds revealed a new Pitfall game for the smartphone.

NVIDIA has confirmed that its upcoming Android gaming handheld, Shield, will start shipping on July 31st. The Tegra 4 testing platform was originally scheduled to hit online retailers in late June, but was delayed due to "a mechanical issue that relates to a third-party component." Now, the company is writing to customers with pre-orders thanking them for their patience and assuring them the product will be on its way by the end of the month.
The finalized ship date puts the product within its delayed July launch window by technicality, but due to the nature of snail mail, most buyers probably won't receive their unit until after the first of August. Frustrating for eager buyers perhaps, but at least NVIDIA's email strikes an apologetic tone -- assuring customers that the delay was a quality assurance measure. Can't wait until the end of the month? Check out our hands-on with the final hardware right here. Didn't pre-order? You'll find the company's official statement after the break.

The next Star Ocean game, Star Ocean: Material Trader, will incorporate the series' universe of characters and items into a social-oriented, role-playing card game, according to Siliconera's translation of Gamer's report. Series Producer Yoshinori Yamagishi is working with Circle of Mana developer Hippos Lab, Square-Enix's smartphone division, to lead Material Trader's development. The game will reach iOS and Android devices this year.
Players help the game's protagonist Tina by collecting "star shards," tackling quests, gathering experience and hoarding money. Hunting for materials and characters while exploring seems to be essential to boosting odds of success in the game. The series' trademark Item Creation mechanic also returns, allowing players to create and equip powerful accessories to their favorite cards.
Those who register before it releases will get a special card of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time's Peppita Rossetti.

the gpSP is a gameboy advance emulator originally written by Exophase. And now it’s ported to the Symbian OS! This version is only for S60 5th edition. Symbian^3 users should use gpsp 0.7 for Symbian^3
I head from the users that the game_config.txt from the past works better than the one packaged with 0.6.5. Some say that the Pokemon Fire Red works with this game_config, while it doesn’t work with the one packages in 0.6.5. For me it seems to be working with both game_configs, so I decided to make a new package for you. Does this one work better, do we have better game compatibility, or do you prefer the one packaged with the older 0.6.5? You can reply in the comments section.
What’s new:
- Repacked with new game_config.txt
gpSP mainview

know issues:
- not working on Symbian^3 based devices such as N8
- It’s a gpsp port, so see the gpsp compatibility list before complaining about non-working ROMs
- the emulator crashes if you try to load a ROM without setting the BIOS
- there are some limitations in the ZIP file support, so maybe you have to upzipt the ROMs
- The ZIP files seem to be eating quite a lot of RAM, so If ROM doesn’t work, try extracting it.
- Samsung blit fails when “keep aspect ratio” is ticked off
- N97 CFW: You can not use touch + call buttons at the same time with this firmware.
ZIP limitations
- WinZip
- Roms ziped in the WinZip Maximum (PPMd) format WILL NOT work.
- Roms ziped in the WinZip Maximum (bzip2) format WILL NOT work
- Roms ziped in the WinZip Maximum (Enhanced Deflate) format WILL NOT run
- Roms ziped in the WinZip Normal format WILL run
- Roms ziped in the WinZip Fast format WILL run.
- Roms ziped in the WinZip Super Fast format WILL run.
- Roms ziped in the WinZip None format WILL run.

Mobile phone providers limit your bandwidth, offer you overpriced access to slow mobile internet or
screw you in several other aspects. Many people are mad about this and the older generation
might remember how easy it was to get many services like free phoning etc for free in the 90's.

In my last holiday I encountered a situation where my mobile internet connection failed because
of some provider bug. After researching the cause of this I found a quite interesting vulnerability which allowed me to develop a simple PoC to come into the enjoyment of free mobile internet.
When I was back home, I ported the PoC to my country's provider and developed a simple
application to speed up the whole exploitation process.
Now I am on the search for sponsors to fund required hardware for the development of the
vulnerability in more and more countries. If you are interested in sponsoring this research
feel free to contact me via e-mail: skfuinfo@gmail.com. Mobile internet providers and journalists are welcome as well
Beta testers are NOT required. I appreciate your offered help, but please understand that I only choose people for testings which I know anyway since a leak of the vulnerability may directly force providers to change their system and improve their security before the research is finalized.

Marat Fayzullin has released another version of its GameBoy Advance emulator VGBA-Android.
Quote:
This morning, I have released VGBA-Android 4.1.2, a new version of my GameBoy Advance emulator:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d=com.fms.vgba
The major new feature in this new version is the Record/Replay functionality. You can now record your gameplay and "go back in time" by clicking the Replay button. To start recording, select "Record" from the menu or click on the action bar button. You will see the recording indicator on your screen. When you want to go back, select "Replay" from the menu, or click on another action bar button: VGBA will show the playback indicator and start replaying your past moves.
As the menu started getting crowded, I merged Freeze/Restore functions into a single menu item called "States". Cheat-related items, including Cheatopedia, can now be found under "Cheats", and the network play is controlled with a single "NetPlay" toggle item. There have been other small fixes and changes as well.
- Added Record/Replay feature letting you go back in time.
- Merged Freeze and Restore into single States dialog.
- Added State Exchange access to the States dialog.
- Collapsed all cheat-related menu items into single Cheats submenu.
- Collapsed all advanced menu items into single Advanced submenu.
- Made NetPlay a single checkable menu item.
- Added a checkbox to Enable Cheats menu item.
- Added Breath of Fire to the Cheatopedia.

Marat Fayzullin has updated his GameBoy/Color emulator VGB-Android.
Quote:
I have just released VGB-Android 3.8, a new version of my Nintendo GameBoy emulator, with the Replay feature, letting you record your gameplay and then "go back in time" replaying the recorded gameplay:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id=com.fms.vgb
In order to start recording, select "Record" from the menu or click on the "target" icon in the action bar. The diamond sign will indicate the ongoing recording. To replay, select "Replay" from the menu or click on the "timer" icon in the action bar. The triangle sign will indicate the ongoing replay. You can terminate replay at any moment by pressing a gamepad button.
As the options menu was becoming crowded, I had to rearrange it. The Freeze/Restore functionality is now accessible via a single menu option called "States", which also lets you access online State Exchange. Cheatopedia and Advanced items got their own submenus.
Finally, I added more caching to the File Selector, making it smoother. File Selector now only shows progress dialog when processing large folders.
- Added Record/Replay feature letting you go back in time.
- Now only showing File Selector progress dialog for large folders.
- Optimized File Selector labels and screenshots for smoother scrolling.
- Merged Freeze/Restore into single States dialog.
- Collapsed cheat-related items into Cheats submenu.
- Collapsed advanced items into Advanced submenu.
- Made Enable Cheats and NetPlay menu items checkable.
- Fixed NetPlay crash when own IP address can´t be detected.
- Added Dragonball Z: Legendary Super Warriors to the Cheatopedia.

Apple and its suppliers are allegedly testing larger screens for the iPhone and iPad.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the firm is looking to release an iPad with a 12.9-inch screen as well as an iPhone with a display larger than the iPhone 5's.
While there have been an abundance of rumours suggesting the next iPhone will increase its display size, there has been very few talking about the possibility of a larger iPad.
Back in May, Korean site ETNews.com reported that Apple was working on a larger iPad, also claiming it will measure 12.9-inches. The site stated that the new device would be called the ‘iPad Maxi’. Dear god, let’s hope it isn’t…
Apple is expected to unveil a host of new devices in September, with spec rumours including an iPhone 6 with a fingerprint sensor, a new slow-motion camera, and a new iPad Mini with a ten-hour battery life.

The Nvidia Shield portable gaming device - which can play Android titles or stream games from a PC - will launch in the US on July 31st.
Last month graphics card maker Nvidia delayed the launch due to a "mechanical issue". Now it's ready to hit retail shelves in the States, though a UK or European release has not yet been confirmed.
Consumers will be able to try out the Nvidia Shield at Shield Experience Centers in select GameStop, Microcenter and Canada Computers stores in the US and Canada.
The Shielf comes with a USB cable, AC adaptor, Silver Tag and two games: Expendable Rearmed and Sonic 4 Episode II THD. The device is priced at $299 and orders currently include a free T-shirt. Carry cases and custom tags are also available.
More information can be found on the Nvidia Shield pre-order website.
Earlier this year Nvidia said it wouldn't sell Shield at a loss.

To pay or not to pay, that is the question.
Past consumer surveys have found that the majority of app users hate seeing ads on their smartphones and tablets.
However, when given the choice between paying for an app which rids it of ads and getting a free version which contains ads, consumers regularly choose the free option, according to a survey from app analytics company Flurry.
Even if a paid app does not have a free or LITE version, there will always be a similar free app for consumers to choose. With around 80 per cent of 'downloaders' on iOS choosing free apps in 2010 - 2012 increasing to 90 per cent in 2013.
On the Android side of things it appears the want for free apps also prevails over the paid option - regardless of the dreaded ad inclusion.
In related news, Apple is currently reeling from an attack on its iOS developer site.

Facebook recently marketed itself as a powerful way for brands to reach consumers when people are on the move during summer, as usage via mobile is up 22 per cent in the UK and 18 per cent in the US.
And now, the company reiterates its ubiquity as it secures more than 100 million users of its Facebook For Every Phone app, which is used in emerging markets like India and the Philippines.
The app runs on more than 3,000 feature phones that can cost as little as $20, and contains information found on the smartphone app like News Feed, messages and photos.
Facebook boasts that the app is designed to use less data than other Java apps and sites to make it more affordable.
Ran Makavy, growth manager, Facebook, said: "Facebook For Every Phone is powered by technology created by Snaptu, an Israel-based mobile platform that I co-founded in 2007. We joined the Facebook Growth Team in California as part of an acquisition in 2011.
"Our small team relaunched Snaptu as Facebook For Every Phone in July of that same year, and grew the user base to where it is today. Snaptu's platform uses the power of servers to accelerate and optimise the way mobile apps work, and is the key to providing a great user experience on low-end devices."
Location-based social network Foursquare recently looked to acquire customers in developing countries by launching for Nokia feature phones.

Firm warns that details may have been stolen.
Cyber criminals attempted to raid the official iOS developer website on Thursday, which has resulted in Apple temporarily taking the site offline.
Seemingly the attack was so big that Apple has been forced to warn developers that names and addresses may have been snatched.
The company claims to be working around the clock to resolve the issue, which tarnishes the App Store recently celebrating its five-year anniversary.
Apple issued a statement that said: "Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed.
"In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologise for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.
"If your program membership was set to expire during this period, it has been extended and your app will remain on the App Store. If you have any other concerns about your account, please contact us."

Engine has also been updated with new editor features and cancellation measures
The latest version of the Unity game engine now has support for Windows Phone, the Windows Store and BlackBerry 10.
The major change for the 4.2 update is support for these new platforms, which also means the engine provider has effectively doubled its platform supports.
In Unity 4.2, all users of the free version of Unity can publish to any mobile platform they wish, including Windows Phone 8, Windows Store, iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10, without any additional charge.
In addition, Unity Pro users will be able to use the Windows Store Pro deployment option (which includes the Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store apps platforms) free of charge.
Unity Pro users will have access to advanced Unity features when deploying their iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 projects by if they choose to purchase Unity iOS Pro, Android Pro or BlackBerry 10 Pro Add-On products from the Unity Store.

Double takeover to improve its much criticised Maps service.
Apple Maps has suffered numerous bugs and faults since its release, with some even resulting in a rare apology from Apple's CEO Tim Cook.
However, the tech giant is striving to improve its mapping services and deliver a worthy Google Maps rival, something that was initially expected from the iPhone 5 - Apple's first device to come with an own-branded and non-Google map app.
Canada-based Locationary originally listed five obstacles Apple faced with its navigation platform and ten months later Apple has picked up the crowd-sourced location data company for its 'knowledge'.
Even though it has become rather apparent why it decided to take on Locationary, Steven Dowling, a spokesperson from Apple, said: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
Apple followed the Locationary takeover by acquiring transit navigation app maker HopStop. The startup specialises in mass transit directions including walking, cycling, public transport and even taxi to offer real-time updates on the state of transport and traffic - the only option not supported is for users driving themselves.
Once again, something that Apple Maps did not offer.
Funnily enough, Kristin Huguet, spokes woman for Apple, said exactly the same as her colleague Dowling - word for word.
It doesn't take much to say that it is doing all it can to improve its services with the help of some experts in that particular sector - alas…
...pride takes lead.
At least we are in the knowledge that its mapping services will now hopefully be improved.

A trio of devs behind some of the more recognisable games on Ouya have revealed their sales figures.
TowerFall is arguably Ouya’s most recognised and acclaimed exclusive game to date (although it is relieving itself of its exclusive shackles). But creator Matt Thorson told Edge that it has to date sold only 2,000 copies at $15 a pop, totalling $30,000.
NimbleBit, meanwhile, has attracted 6,508 downloads but has only converted 122 of these into purchases resulting in $427 profit. Twin stick shooter Red has sold “just below 400” copies.
TowerFall’s Thorson is upbeat about the numbers, however.
“Sales have been surprisingly high for a new game on a new console,” he stated. “The response has been amazing. A lot of high profile people in games have been praising the game, which is of course fantastic, and there’s been a lot of talk among gamers as well. Launching on Ouya got me a lot of attention, and the sales have been better than expected.”

Fresh Paint, the digital art app born on Windows 8, has finally migrated to mobile devices, and starting today, aspiring artists running Windows Phone 8 can fiddle with its brushes to their hearts' content. This new, simplified version doesn't make any major departures from the Windows 8 application; you can still mix pigments to create custom hues, share your creations via text, e-mail and SkyDrive and add filters to your photos to make them look like paintings or sketches. It's worth noting that WP8 doesn't support styluses, so you'll have to make do with finger painting or a capacitative stylus without pressure sensitivity. To download the free app, head over to Windows Phone store, linked below.

Cars are dangerous, all the more when drivers reach for controls positioned at arm's length. Road risk is increased by the fact that many drivers seek distraction or productivity while rolling along. Multitasking while behind the wheel can be more perilous than driving drunk.
The car also represents third-party business opportunities. It is an under-served mobile environment. Many apps that work beautifully at home or in a coffee shop, such as music playback or messaging, are halting or awkward in the rolling living room of a car.
The race is on for control of the car's infotainment systems. Apple's recently grantedpatent for a touchscreen dash is Cupertino's aim toward owning the dashboard operating system and interface, in ways that hook into the company's device and media businesses. But thorny competition comes not only from other tech companies, but also from the car companies. And whatever victories Apple enjoys in the dashboard could ultimately be neutered by longer-term automotive tech inventions.

When Apple's developer portal went down Thursday, there were a lot of questions left unanswered. One of the more notable was, just who was responsible for this attack onthe premiere destinations for iOS and OS X developers? Turkish security researcher Ibrahim Balic is claiming he was behind the hack, but it wasn't his intention to cause any harm. Balic says that he reported the vulnerability to the proper Cupertino authorities but, for whatever reason, his efforts didn't end there. He actually exploited the security flaw he had discovered, which gave him access to the names, email and mailing addresses associated with developer accounts. In total he discovered 13 bugs, at least one of which he demonstrated in a YouTube video, that appeared to show him accessing a list of developer names and user IDs. That clip has since been pulled, as Balic was concerned about some of the information displayed on the screen. However, in a tweet he asserted that sharing the confidential data was essential to prove his point about the severity of the vulnerability.
The researcher does insist that his actions were legal and ethical. He told the Guardianthat he only accessed developer account data in an effort to discover just how deep the rabbit hole went as part of a penetration test and will delete all of the data he collected. He claims that immediately after reporting his findings to Cupertino the dev center was shutdown, but that he never received a follow up from someone at the company. Instead there was simply an announcement of an attack, without any correspondance between Balic and Apple. So far Apple has not responded to our request for comment, and has neither confirmed nor denied Balic's account of events.

It looks like that "Something Big" that Nokia was hinting about earlier this morning might turn out to be the Nokia Lumia 625, if this leak by Finnish publicationPuhelinvertailu is to be believed. The specs appear to match what was revealed a few days ago on China's certification site; it'll apparently sport a 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass 2 IPS WVGA (800 x 480) LCD, a 1.2-GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 512MB RAM and a 2,000mAh battery. The leak also hints at a rear 5-megapixel camera with 1080p recording, a front-facing VGA shooter, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and interestingly, an LTE variant with support for European bands (though we wouldn't rule out North American support later down the line). It's difficult to say exactly how the phone will actually look like up close, however, so it's a good thing we'll be up bright and early tomorrow at 9am UK time (4am Eastern) to see Nokia's unveiling.
Update: An additional image of the alleged Nokia Lumia 625, which we've embedded after the break, has just surfaced on @evleaks' Twitter feed. Unfortunately, this latest render tell us nothing new about the handset apart from Nokia's continued design practice of colorful polycarbonate shells.
Update 2: @evleaks isn't done posting Lumia 625 pics just yet apparently, as he's just tweeted yet another render of Nokia's latest, but this time in a cascading arrangement. You can take a look at it after the break.

Want a cheap gateway to the world of Windows Phone? In the US, it won't get much cheaper than AT&T's new version of the Lumia 520. Nokia's starter device will cost just $100 contract-free when it hits AT&T's GoPhone prepaid service on July 26th -- that's $50 less than T-Mobile's already inexpensive Lumia 521. There won't be LTE support or other frills, but we suspect that many customers won't mind at this price.

Rumors that Apple is looking to super-size its upcoming iPhone and iPad lineups are gathering steam, thanks to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal. It cited Apple's suppliers in Asia, who said that Cupertino is testing a 12.9-inch iPad design and prototype iPhone screens larger than the current four inches. While Apple wouldn't comment, of course, that jibes with an earlier Reuters report, which claimed it was considering 4.7- and 5.7-inch iPhone screens. If accurate (and that's always a big ifwith such rumors), the report doesn't necessarily mean that products with larger displays will ever come to market -- Apple routinely changes specs and tests components during the development cycle. Still, it would be further evidence that the company's willing to bend on its one-size-fits-all screen size policy, which is something that the large-handed (or weak-eyed) among us might appreciate.

All the features expected from a 4G Lumia without the price tag.
Nokia have announced the release of the Nokia Lumia 625, a new 4G smartphone, powered by the latest version of Windows Phone 8 which includes the Nokia Lumia Amber update and delivers a rich and easy to use device without the usual Ł400 price tag.
The estimated price of the Lumia 625 - which will be available in a number of colours - is Ł200 before tax, and with 4G being rolled out across the UK will be a welcomed device into our shops.
The 4.7inch screened smartphone opens up the world of high-end devices to more consumers, giving them the opportunity to experience the benefits of a better phone.
Other features of Windows Phone 8 that are included are the Live Tiles which update to the users specification on the home screen, Xbox Live, Microsoft Office and 7GB of online SkyDrive storage.
The Lumia 625 has access to over 165,000 apps including the likes of Vimeo, Temple Run and WhatsApp and hinting to its bigger brother the Lumia 1020 contains Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Cinemagraph.
Nicola Shenton, head of devices at EE, said: "4G is incredibly important for the future of mobile in the UK. With the new Lumia 625, Nokia is helping bring even more affordable, quality 4G devices to the market which will ensure 4G experiences are available to a broader audience."

Newest version of the OS becomes top dog for the first time.
Today's Dialaphone article details Google's explosive Android operating system and the way that newest version Jelly Bean is now leading the pack...
It’s been a long time coming but Android Jelly Bean is now the most popular version of Google’s mobile operating system, surpassing the Gingerbread iteration for the first time.
Google recently released new data based on the number of Android devices accessing the Google Play Store. The findings reveal that Jelly Bean is now running on 37.9 per cent of all active Android devices around the world, while Gingerbread settles in at 34.1 per cent and Ice Cream Sandwich at 23.3 per cent.
The search giant said its revamped data capturing method “more accurately reflects those users who are most engaged in the Android and Google Play ecosystem.”
These latest figures suggest an almost ten per cent rise in Android’s market share since last month, which could well be down to a number of high-profile Android Jelly Bean devices debuting this year.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, which are available on a range of contracts from network providers including O2 and Vodafone, are just two smartphones that have helped boost Android’s profile even further. Both handsets are selling in huge quantities and Samsung even recently reported it has shipped 20 million units of its flagship.
Developers
Android 4.0 and above now powers more than 60 per cent of devices currently on the market, and it is now the only version of Google’s software that is experiencing any growth. This will also come as great news to developers because it means the mobile platform will gradually start to become less fragmented, making app development far more straightforward.
In the past Android has come under fire for having lots of different iterations of its software running on lots of different devices, and as a result Google has always struggled with getting the bulk of its users on the same version. For those developing third party applications this can make the process much harder and slower, as they have to optimise their creations for a range of software rather than just one.
Fortunately for Google, Jelly Bean updates are finally starting to gather pace and although devices running Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich will likely be around for quite some time, it’s a promising development that is likely to boost the popularity of the Android platform even further.
Market share
In its entirety Android is said to command almost 70 per cent of the smartphone market, but competition from the likes of Apple and the popularity of the iPhone 5, is still strong – in fact Google’s profits are still well below those pulled in by the Cupertino firm.
According to fan blog Apple Insider, during 2012 Google earned around $50bn compared to Apple’s $54bn for the last quarter alone. Apple certainly seems to be leveraging its market share much more effectively, which proves that in the long run it’s not always market share that matters, it’s what a company does to utilise it that could prove to be more beneficial.
That said, there is no doubt Google is working hard to bring all of its users together, but in a space where smartphone software innovations are becoming an even more important selling point for manufacturers, the firm still needs to focus on its future creations to keep users interested in its mobile platform.
In October Google is expected to unveil the next iteration of its OS; Key Lime Pie. If it launches at this time it will be the perfect way to mark the fifth anniversary since the launch of the first Android-based phone, the HTC Dream, whilst signalling exactly just how far the company has come over the past few years.

A number of new devs have revealed the sales numbers for their Ouya games and the reaction can best be described as mixed.
Organ Trail by studio The Men Who Wear Many Hats has according to creator Ryan Wiemeyer “sold about half of what my low-end predictions were” Gamasutra reports. Specifically, it has so far been downloaded 13,112 times resulting in 501 purchases. The game has elsewhere sold in the region of 400,000 copies.
Bombball creator E McNeill told the site that his game is making “a little over” $30 a day before Ouya takes its cut. “I kind of knew from the start that I was making a game that would be difficult to sell,” he admits. “Still, I let my expectations get inflated over time, and now I'm a little disappointed with the sales.”
However, other devs were more positive.
Vlambeer’s Super Crate Box is selling “exactly what we expected” according to Rami Ismail, who added that “judging by some of the numbers we've been hearing from other developers it seems a viable platform to co-develop for”.
BombSquad’s Eric Froemling says he is “happy so far” with sales which peaked at “close to” 200 per day and are currently sitting at around 70. He added: “It sounds like everyone's been seeing a bit of a sales drop after the initial few-week surge, so I'm curious to see what the tail will wind up looking like.”
Get On Top’s Shay Pierce says his game has had 9,700 downloads and 520 sales earning $728 to date after Ouya’s cut.
Yesterday two of Ouya’s leading games revealed sales of 2,000 (TowerFall) and 122 (NimbleBit) respectively.

31 million smartphones sold is a new quarterly record, but Apple's revenues were flat while profits and tablet sales dipped
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
apple.com
Depending on how one wants to make the numbers sound, Apple sales were up either $300 million for its last quarter, or less than 1 percent year-over-year. The company today announced its results for the third fiscal quarter (three months ended June 29), showing revenues rose the aforementioned amount to $35.3 billion, up from $35 billion in the same period the year prior.
Despite the uptick in sales, profits for the company were down. Apple reported $6.9 billion in net income, down from $8.824 billion the year before.
Sales of the iPhone were particularly strong, with Apple reporting a new record for the quarter with 31 million iPhones sold, up from 26 million year-over-year. The iPad did not fare as well, as Apple sold 14.6 million tablets for the quarter, down from 17 million over the same stretch of 2012. Mac sales also dipped slightly, from 4 million to 3.8 million.
Apple left the door open for a strong finish to the year, providing revenue guidance between $34 billion and $37 billion for the fourth quarter, which ends September 29. Last year the company reported its best fourth quarter sales ever, which came in just under $36 billion.

Ouya's a strange one. Billed as an Android-powered alternative to game consoles - a pitch that helped it secure millions in Kickstarter capital - it launched to mixed reviews last month and game sales are on the tiddly side at the moment, although some developers are fine with that. It also faces competition from rival Android micro-consoles like GameStick, which is due out shortly. The proof of a console's quality, though, is not in its business success or the manner of its launch, but in the games. Are they interesting and original? Are they fun to play? Would you buy a console in order to play them? In Ouya's case there's the complicating factor that many of them are smaller indie titles, so a buying decision is more likely to be made in aggregate than due to one individual title. We've written plenty about whether we'd buy an Ouya, but now that we're done with reviews we thought you might appreciate another way to look in on the launch line-up, so we dispatched our kit to Ian Higton, who is live-streaming a selection of games from 5pm BST today. If you're still unsure about the whole thing, or just want to see how it looks in action, join him. Remember that if you see this late you can still watch an archive of the stream.P.S. Sorry this has taken a little while to put together. We had wanted to do it sooner and in fact we ordered a second Ouya console specifically to do so, but after two weeks it still hadn't shipped, so we had to pass around our existing one. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

Operating system specialist Canonical has revealed the Ubuntu Edge - a "superphone" that doubles up as a desktop PC.
The company is seeking $32 million on crowdfunding website Indiegogo to produce the new type of smartphone, which Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth describes as "a proving ground for the most advanced mobile technologies on the horizon, a showpiece for true mobile innovation".
The Ubuntu Edge will boast 4GB of RAM, 128GB storage and a 4.5-inch display made of pure sapphire crystal. It's expected to launch in May 2014 in limited numbers.
It can connect to a standard HDMI screen and work as a desktop PC, and its dual-LTE chip will connect users online with 4G. The smartphone will dual-boot with the Ubuntu phone OS and Android.
"The phone industry today is a bit like the camera industry five years ago," said Shuttleworth. "Stuck in a mega pixel race chasing wasted resolution. What's much more interesting is colour accuracy and brightness.
"Convergence is the key idea we're exploring, so this phone needs to be a potent little PC when docked. We'll select the very latest fastest multi-core processor as we finalise the design. It's going to redefine PC portability.
"It’s desktop computing gone truly mobile.
He added: "We're not trying to get into the phone business - we're working with phone companies for your normal mid and high end phones. This project is just for us - the real enthusiasts. That's why a crowdfunding approach is perfect."
The Linux-based Ubuntu OS is currently used by 20 million users worldwide.

Apple sold a record 31.2 million iPhones during its fiscal third quarter for 2013 - up 5.2 million year-on-year.
However, quarterly net profit during the three months ending June 29th, 2013, fell almost $2 million to $6.9 million, down from the $8.8 million made during Q3 2012.
Gross margin was 36.9 per cent compared to 42.8 per cent in the same period last year.
Apple sold 14.6 million iPads and 3.8 million Macs during Q3 2013, down from last year's 17 million and four million respectively.
Apple’s Board of Directors has declared a cash dividend of $3.05 per share - payable to shareholders on August 15th.
“We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
“We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.”
Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer added: "We generated $7.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter and are pleased to have returned $18.8 billion in cash to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases."
Apple expects revenues of between $34 and $37 billion during its fourth quarter for 2014, and gross margins of around 36 to 37 per cent.

Apology texts, app purchases, shopping and so on after guzzling a few Britney Spears.
Non-UK folk would be right to be concerned for the British - recent data has shown that 62 per cent of women in the region have used mobiles during sex.
As if that's not bad enough, ten per cent of festival-attending bright sparks tape a note to mobiles in case of loss.
giffgaff now claims that using a mobile while drunk costs Brits Ł638 million a year. This is comprised of 75 per cent calling international/premium numbers, 70 per cent sending apology texts and making financial promises, 68 per cent shopping online and taking out payday loans.
Around 90 per cent of those surveyed were smartphone users, which means access to potentially expensive technologies like app stores, retail sites and 3G/4G connectivity.
More than 400 million drunken mobile conversations are estimated to take place each year, with
27 per cent of respondents sending drunk texts – the most popular comms method – followed by social media messaging at 17 per cent.
35 per cent of people had contacting their friends while under the influence, but 11 per cent had contacted an ex and three per cent had contacted their boss.
Additionally, 54 per cent of recipients sent a message to someone else other than the intended recipient. Just 12 per cent of people said they never used mobile communications when hammered.
The mobile booze combo caused 34 per cent to have disagreements and 11 per cent had broken up with a partner because of a drunken message.

CEO makes the tease as iPhone sales hit a record 31.2m in Q3 and profit plummets $2bn.
Two new iPhones were rumoured to be unveiled last month, but seemingly it was just that, a rumour.
However, amid Apple's fiscal Q3 figures, CEO Tim Cook hints the company's next smartphone will arrive once summer ends.
He said: "We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014."
Of course, Apple recently claimed iOS 7 is the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone, and it will have to be to help the company's dip in profits.
For the fiscal Q3 ending June 29th 2013, Apple's revenue hit $35.3 billion and profit of $6.9 billion, which are up and down year-on-year from $35 billion and $8.8 billion.
The firm sold a record-breaking 31.2 million iPhones the quarter, which is up from 26m the previous year, while iPad sales dipped to 14.6m from 17m in 2012.
Apple predicts revenue to be between $34 billion and $37bn in Q4.
The UK may be reluctant to help the company achieve sales, however, as 65 per cent of Brits think the iPhone 6 will be totally rubbish.

Mobile web specialist Netbiscuits HAS monitored all traffic hitting its Cloud Platform to see what devices are most used, finding that the top ten only account for 48 per cent of total global traffic.
In a recent survey, Netbiscuits discovered that more than 60 per cent of people think that improving the online experience on smartphones was a high priority, and 44 per cent for tablets, as revealed in the Netbiscuits Web Trends Report.
Mobile data has doubled in the first quarter compared to the year before, whilst mobile subscribers reached 6.4 billion, which is the equivalent to nine subscriptions for every ten people in the world.
This data gathered from the Netbiscuits Cloud Platform gathering information from over one billion hits showed that it is becoming increasing important for web owners and marketers to address any issues with the user experience provided by their mobile sites.

In addition to the anticipated performance gains that Intel's new Haswell CPU architecture might bring to the table for their new MacBook Air, there are additional component-level upgrades that Apple baked in to their latest ultra-light notebook; namely a higher capacity 54 Whr battery and a PCI Express-based Solid State Drive (SSD). Apple still hasn't seen fit to up the ante on the MacBook Air's display, opting instead to stick with the 1440x900 TN panel carried over from the previous generation 13-inch machine, with the 11-inch variant sporting a 1366x768 native res. But in terms of performance, this is Apple's fastest Air yet, with storage throughput in excess of 700MB/sec for reads and 400MB/sec for writes, along with graphics horsepower that rivals entry level discrete GPUs, thanks to Intel's HD Graphic 5000 core in Haswell. Battery life has been improved dramatically as well, with the new Air lasting over 9 hrs on a charge, playing back 1080p video content. Apple also reduced their MSRP by $100 versus last year's model."Not too bad at around $1100. The 54Wh battery looks it improves the portability a bit.

At a press conference dubbed "Breakfast With Sundar," Google announced two new pieces of hardware and a minor revision to Android. Complete stories and commentary are still coming in, but in the mean time you can skim a liveblog or two First is the new Nexus 7. The hardware is slightly improved (full HD screen, better graphics, etc.). The specs managed to "leak" hours before the event through Best Buy opening preordering too early. On the software side, they've announced a minor revision to Android, 4.3. It features improved Bluetooth support (including Bluetooth 4.0), OpenGL ES 3.0, enhanced internationalization, enhanced DRM, and multi-user support. The multi-user support looks most exciting: now you can share a tablet with more than one person. One of the features Google focused on was restricted profiles: a device owner can create accounts that e.g. cannot make in-app purchases (Junior won't rack up a $3000 bill again). Bad news: Google is implementing stricter DRM for books and video, locking down the entire video stack. The consolation prize is that Netflix will work on more devices and at 1080p. Also demoed were a new version of Chrome that brings the tablet experience closer to the desktop, improved hangouts, and improved maps. Google also appears to be making a push into gaming, emphasizing tablet-only games that integrate into Google+. In addition to gaming, they have secured deals with five major textbook publishers to sell students presumably DRMed electronic textbooks that can be purchased or rented, enhanced with better search and highlighting (because PDF readers don't support those features already). As usual lately, all of the really nice additions to Android are proprietary and tied to Google services, further eroding the open nature of Android. Finally, they announced a tiny $35 dongle named Chromecast that appears to be the successor of the Nexus Q. Running Chrome OS, it connects to any HDMI port, finds your Wi-Fi network, and Just Works (tm) for online video. The online and mobile Youtube and Netflix interfaces will allow you to hit a single button and forward the video to your television as well. Google Music streaming to the television is also supported. The Chromecast looks like a handy little device, hopefully it is turns out it can be reflashed. Of course, when using your browser as a remote, all of the commands go through The Cloud. An SDK and more details on the software side of things are slated for release later today, although conspiciously absent on their supported platforms list is GNU/Linux, listing only Chrome OS and Android. Update: 07/24 18:01 GMT by U L : The Chromecast SDK is out, but with an awfully restrictive license that requires written permission from Google to distribute any cast enabled applications, which appears to make it completely incompatible with Free/Open Source software.

Earlier this month, researchers from Bluebox Security uncovered a serious vulnerability in Android that allowed for the modification of apps without affecting the cryptographic signature, making it possible for attackers to turn legitimate apps into Trojans. ... Now, Symantec says it has uncovered the first malicious apps making use of the exploit in the wild. Symantec discovered two mobile applications that were infected by an attacker, which are legitimate applications used to help find and make doctor appointments and distributed on Android marketplaces in China. 'An attacker has taken both of these applications and added code to allow them to remotely control devices, steal sensitive data such as IMEI and phone numbers, send premium SMS messages, and disable a few Chinese mobile security software applications by using root commands, if available,' Symantec explained in a blog post. ... Google has fixed the security hole in Android, but it is now in the control of handset manufacturers to produce and release the updates for mobile devices to patch the flaws

Now that Google has let its $35 Chromecast HDMI dongle out of the bag at itsbreakfast press event, it's gonna need developers to chip in some apps for it. To help boost that effort, the company is releasing the Google Cast SDK to help those folks bring content from mobile and the web to TVs. By using the kit, developers won't need to build new applications for the big screen from scratch; they'll just need to make a few tweaks to their existing mobile apps. Mountain View expects Google Cast tech to be embedded in future hardware from its partners, with Chromecast being "the first instantiation" of such an ecosystem. You can now grab a preview (at the source) for iOS, Android and Chrome -- which is good news, since the wee dongle already appears to be sold out on Play.

Today Google unveiled a brand new Play Games app, that serves as a companion hub and portal for the Google Play Games Services, announced at I/O. The app serves as a front end for viewing leader boards and connecting with friends (from your Google+ circles, of course), simplifying the act of challenging them in head-to-head competitions. Play Games, in addition to serving as a place to track all of your achievements and other such gaming goodness, serves as a single repository for launching all your games. Think of it like Steam, but for your Android tablet or phone, and with a slightly less graphically-impressive library of titles. Asphalt 8 Airborne, Riptide GP2 and Prince of Persia The Shadow and the Flame are will be among the first to take advantage of the new Play Games App, with the latter hitting virtual shelves tomorrow.
Update: It's now available on Google Play; hit the source link for your download.

After revealing Google's new Nexus 7, Director of Product Management Hugo Barra revealed that the company has teamed up with Netflix to bring higher resolution video streams to compatible devices, a feature you'll only enjoy on devices running the just-announced Android 4.3. Yep, Netflix will now run at 1080p resolution, with the video-streaming company one of the first to use the new set of DRM APIs announced in tandem with this latest OS release. Unfortunately, of course, you'll just have to wait for that pesky OTA update before you can try it.

The original Nexus 7 launched in a relative vacuum -- there were other low-cost, 7-inch Android tablets before, but few with the full support of a major manufacturer. The2013-era Nexus 7 is entering a far more crowded marketplace with many recognizable names, and even more aggressive pricing. With that in mind, we've compared Google's latest tablet with three of its newest 7-inch peers -- ASUS' MeMo Pad HD 7, HP's Slate 7 and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 -- to see whether it's as strong a value as its predecessor.
Ironically, the new Nexus 7 occupies the high end in this space. It's the most expensive tablet here, with the sharpest display, the fastest processor and the most built-in storage. However, that doesn't mean it's priced out of contention. The $30 you save with the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 just isn't worth it; Samsung's tablet is a big step down in every aspect outside of expandability. And you're clearly getting what you pay for with the Slate 7, whose low price doesn't excuse a poor display and sluggish performance.
The Nexus 7's real competition comes from its own manufacturer, ASUS. While the MeMo Pad HD 7 has a lower resolution screen and a slower CPU, its cameras, display quality, processing power and storage are superb for the price. If you don't crave the Nexus 7's technology or stock Android 4.3, it may be wiser to save $80 and buy the good-enough MeMo Pad instead. Full specifications for all the tablets are available after the break.

When we reviewed the Nexus 7 last summer, we said it was the best tablet $200 could buy. A year later, that still might be true if it weren't for the fact that there's a newNexus 7 in town. One that's a bit better specced and a bit more expensive than the OG model. Today Google took the wraps off an updated version of its smaller tablet offering, this one also made by ASUS, which takes everything you know and love about the original and makes it just a little bit better. For one, the already-solid screen has been bumped to 1,920 x 1,200, giving the new Nexus a pixel density of 323 ppi. The 7-point touch IPS panel sports glass that's not only scratch resistant, but also fights off fingerprints and smudges (we'll believe that one when we see it). Of course, putting a stunning display on a device is pointless if you don't have the horsepower to serve up lots of smooth, high-quality content. So, Google gave the CPU a bit of a bump, moving to a 1.5GHz quad-core S4 Pro from Qualcomm that comes paired with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Oh, and all those wonderful new components should be well utilized by Android 4.3, the exciting (if incremental) OS update released alongside Google's new tablet.

It seems like just 10 weeks ago that Google was reporting a total of 900 million Android activations. Well, now the company's back, once again outdoing itself with some fresh figures. Today, we're hearing that more than 70 million Android tablets have been activated to date. Meanwhile, Google has surpassed 50 billion app downloads in the Google Play Store across all Android devices, and there are now more than a million applications available in the store. Additionally, the company claims that in the first half of this year, one in two tablets sold worldwide was an Android product. With no way of confirming that figure ourselves, we'll stand on that tablet activation figure, as it represents a pretty sizable jump for Google: at the end of 2012, tablet activations were still somewhere below 40 million. That's all for now as far as stats go. We'll leave you to gawk at that super tempting new Nexus 7.

BlackBerry confirmed that despite the launch of BB10, it'll still deploy one handsetrunning BB7 later this year. We're almost certain that phone will be the 9720, and while the Thai site that got an initial look called it a Bold, it might actually be a new member of the Curve family, according to a fresh leak from our Vietnamese friends atTinhte. They've given the unannounced QWERTY model a brief video hands-on and taken a bunch of thankfully sharp snaps, including some side-by-side shots with the oldBold 9790. A disclaimer in the translated text states the device is a "trial version," so the final hardware may be slightly different, but it's said to have a 480 x 360 resolution touchscreen and a 1,450mAh removable battery. Our Vietnamese is a little rusty, so while we can't tell you what the narrator is saying, you'll still get a good overview of the hardware in the three-minute vid below.

We hope you weren't just getting used to having 2GB of RAM in a smartphone, because Samsung is already moving on. The company is now mass-producing 3GBLPDDR3 packages whose 0.8mm (0.03in) thickness can accommodate most device sizes. The capacious, 20nm-class memory should also be quick when there's a pair of symmetric channels to keep data flowing. The first smartphones with 3GB of RAM should ship in the second half of the year; Samsung isn't revealing which phones will have the honor, but it's not hard to make some educated guesses.

It seems like new Nexus 7s are everywhere, so we're not surprised one of the tablets floating around has finally been subjected to a quick round of benchmarking. Android Police has dug deep into the specs, confirming this slate -- device codenamed "Razor" -- has internals nearly identical to the Nexus 4, with a Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU running at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM behind its 1920x1200 7-inch screen. Running the 3DMark and AnTuTu benchmarks revealed scores slightly higher than the Nexus 4, but we'll probably have to wait just a little longer to find out exactly what its Android 4.3 OS is bringing to the table.
Update: Droid-Life points out that Best Buy has kicked off pre-orders early for the 16GB and 32GB variants. The pricing ($229 and $269, respectively), release date (July 30th) and specs are all well-known by now, but if you're willing to be the next person to buy one, you can get in line at the link below.

July 25th, 2013, 01:34 Posted By: wraggster
The graphics chip maker today revealed details for 'Project Logan', the code name for a new mobile graphics chip based on its latest Kepler architecture.
The firm used a chart to show that the new mobile chip will help mobile devices significantly outpace Sony's PS3 in "relative graphics horsepower" by early 2014.
"GeForce 256 revolutionized PC graphics and created the GPU category, with its full workstation-class feature set and industry-leading performance. Kepler delivers the same promise to mobile," it said.
"It brings a huge jump in performance. It offers extraordinary power efficiency. And it provides full support for the modern GPU feature set found in the latest PC GPUs and upcoming consoles, instead of the incomplete, outdated capabilities of current mobile GPUs."
While the new tech draws just a third the power of processors found in iPad 4 to perform equivalent rendering, it's capable of all the latest rendering techniques.
"We achieved this efficiency without compromising graphics capability," explains Nvidia. "Kepler supports the full spectrum of OpenGL - including the just-announced OpenGL 4.4 full-featured graphics specification and the OpenGL ES 3.0 embedded standard. It also supports DirectX 11, Microsoft's latest graphics API."
Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney backed the announcement with confirmation of support for the new chip with the studio's next-gen graphics engine, Unreal Engine 4.
"The big news here is NVIDIA's support for the OpenGL 4.3 feature set, which brings to mobile devices the same high-end graphics hardware capabilities exposed via DirectX 11 on PC games and on next-generation consoles," enthused Sweeney.
"It's the same Kepler architecture on top of which we've created high-end Unreal Engine 4 PC demos, which have taken advantage of over 2.5 teraflops of computing performance," he added.

A new version of the Nexus 7 tablet is coming to market on July 30, anxious to show off its thinner and lighter summer body to the world.
The new Nexus 7, which sports an increased 1,920 x 1,200 resolution and upgraded innards, will retail for $230 for the 16GB model and $270 for the 32GB model. A $350 model supporting LTE will be available "in the coming weeks." The latest version of Android, Jelly Bean 4.3, is on board the 7-inch tablet.
Just as it did with the original Nexus 7 tablet, GameStop will be selling the updated Nexus 7 tablet - both online and in-store. "The original Nexus 7 was a great success for both GameStop and Google, and we are excited to continue this success as the 7-inch tablet and Android market continue to grow," said GameStop's VP of mobile, Joe Gorman, in an announcement. Anyone who comes into GameStop and trades in goods toward a new Nexus 7 will receive an extra 30% in credit for a limited time.

HP is set to launch a budget tablet through Walmart to target the back to school demand.
According to DigiTimes, The HP tablet will sell for $99 and will have a 7-inch touch panel and Intel’s Medfield-based single-core processor.
Anonymous sources told the website that the tablet will be manufactured by BYD, making it the second tablet that HP has outsourced to the China-based maker.
If the rumours are true, this will be the first time HP has launched a tablet for under $100. However, back in 2011, the firm did slash the price of its TouchPad from $499 to $99 in a bid to clear out inventory due to weak demand.
Acer’s Iconia B1 is also a 7-inch budget tablet, which the firm released for under Ł100 earlier this year. Asus has also recently extended its budget-friendly tablet range with the MeMO Pad HD 7, although this device is a little pricier at Ł149.

Average user breaks their beloved Apple smartphone in just ten weeks.
Tim Cook has hinted that the iPhone 6 is due for an autumn release, which may come as a blow to anyone that has just upgraded to an iPhone 5 or lower.
Of course, the revelation may prompt over-zealous buyers to pull their hair out, but www.mobilephonechecker.co.ukhas revealed the average iPhone in the UK is damaged in just ten weeks, meaning new users won't have to wait long until they're onto the next.
Some of the most unusual ways to damage the Apple device included dropping it into a blender while making a Vine video, while another was wrecked when using it as a 'lovemaking' prop.
The most common causes of damage, however, are:
1. 43 per cent said dropped on a hard surface
2. 35 per cent said fallen into water (toilet, sink, bath etc)
3. 32 per cent said stood or sat on accidentally
4. 12 per cent said Left on roof of car
5. Ten per cent said broken by child
Adam Cable, director of www.mobilephonechecker.co.uk, said: "The screens are pretty fragile as most would admit, and it’s always best to protect your handset with a case to give it the best chance of surviving past the 10 week period. As for the bloke who used his iPhone as a sex toy, well I just hope he didn’t try and sell it second hand afterwards.”

While 33 per cent of two-timers use a digital camera with their smartphone.
With the improvements on smartphone cameras flooding in fast and furious, it is becoming more and more apparent that we reply more on our mobile devices for taking pictures than we do on our dusty digital cameras, with 58 per cent of Americans saying they just use their phone for photography, according to Suite 48 Analytics.
Only four per cent use a tablet with their smartphone to take, edit, share photos or buy photo products and apps on - and only five per cent use all three devices.
The number of people who have admitted to just using their smartphone for camera purposes has increased in 18 months from 37 per cent, indicating to the rapid improvement of photo-capturing-capabilities.
Recently, mobile manufacturers have focused more on the quality of the cameras on their devices, such as Samsung with the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which has a 10x optical Zoom and loads more improved camera-gadgetry, and the Nokia Lumia 1020 with its 41 megapixel camera and its claim to have reinvented the zoom.
On the flip side, however, Samsung has released a new camera, the Galaxy NX, which embraces mobile technology via the integration of Android, 3G, 4G, wi-fi, apps and so on.
Hans Hartman, president of Suite 48 Analytics, said: "With smartphone market penetration still growing and camera optics and photo apps still improving, smartphones are rapidly becoming the most used device for many photo tasks."

Looks to generate buzz via the small screen before the next addition of Grand Theft Auto lands.
Rockstar Games has launched a number of its hallowed games on Android and iOS over the past couple of years, acting as an easy way to generate cash from existing IP.
GTA III, Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City were all launched for around $5 on smartphones and tablets to coincide with their respective tenth anniversaries.
So, with the publisher's next big console game arriving in the form of GTA V on September 17th, it has sliced the price of its mobile titles to between $1.99-$2.99 until July 30th.
The move has likely been made to generate buzz among devout fans and newbies alike, with the promotion creating the potential to encourage mobile-only users or non-gamers to move over to PS3 or Xbox 360 when GTA V lands.
The games available for sale can be found below:
Grand Theft Auto Vice City: 10th Anniversary Edition: iOS | Android
Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition: iOS | Android
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars: iPhone/iPod touch | iPad
Max Payne: iOS | Android

Epic and Nvidia team up for SIGGRAPH tech demo
Epic Games gave a tech demo at SIGGRAPH today that showed what it called “desktop PC game content” running on Nvidia's “Logan” mobile processor.
The Unreal Engine 4 powered demonstration took advantage of Nvidia's new support for OpenGL 4.3, which allows developers access to high-end graphics on mobile devices.
The Logan processor is important because it brings the Kepler architecture of Nvidia's newest line of PC GPUs to mobile devices.
“And this isn’t your father’s GPU: Nvidia’s mobile graphics technology is built on the same Kepler graphics architecture found in its latest generation of PC GPUs,” writes Epic President Tim Sweeney in an Nvidia blog post.
“It’s the same Kepler architecture on top of which we’ve created high-end Unreal Engine 4 PC demos, which have taken advantage of over 2.5 teraflops of computing performance.”

Another Android console is heading to market later this year.
CVG reports that Mad Catz hopes to have its Mojo microconsole on sale in the UK before the end of the year. The SKU also includes a Bluetooth 360-like joypad that, incidentally, is compatible with Android phones.
One way in which it will differentiate itself from competition such as Ouya is that the machine runs stock Android, giving players access to the Google Play and Amazon stores rather than funnelling them through a controlled service.
It also means players will have access to their existing Android game libraries and should work with the likes of Netflix and LoveFilm.
This will also mean that users will be responsible for vetting compatibility with the joypad, of course. Mad Catz reckons it is working on a solution to that.
For what it’s worth the joypad has a “mouse mode” that allows players to use an analogue stick like a mouse. USB mice can also be plugged into the console, as can most USB peripherals.
"We are totally open. No walled garden, no small selection of games, no subscription fees,” was the line given from Mad Catz PR man Alex Verrey. “We bring the hardware, gamers bring the games. Buy games from where you want, when you want and how you want."

Kiss that energy hungry PC you’ve been using as a home server goodbye. [Vince Loschiavo] shows us how he squeezed a remarkable amount of functionality out of an inexpensive Android stick which manages his home’s digital empire.
He started off just wanting some network attached storage. For this he grabbed an MK802 Android Stick which you can get for a song if you find the right deal. To bend it to his will he said goodbye to the Android OS, installing Ubuntu for ARM instead. The stick (which is missing its case in the image above) connects to a USB hub in host mode, but does actually draw all of its power from the hub itself. This made it possible to attach a USB to Ethernet adapter to boost the speed which would have been limited by the WiFi connection. There’s a 320 gig USB hard drive for the storage. With that much space on hand it makes sense to add streaming media service as well which is simple since it’s running Linux. The last part of his work actually turns it into an Asterisk server by way of Google Voice and a SIP phone. An impressive outcome at a bargain price to be sure!

With Android 4.3 being less than 24 hours old, it's nice to see manufacturers already addressing concerns about whether all those under-the-hood tweaks will reach their devices. On Sony Mobile's website, the company confirms that the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL,Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra will get Android 4.3, though a concrete timetable hasn't been provided. Furthermore, if you own an Xperia ZR or Tablet Z, then consider yourself lucky, because you'll see Android 4.2 hit your device next month, making the wait for 4.3 that much more bearable. So yes, a Nexus might get its updates quicker, but can it receive them in the bath?

Okay folks, here's what we know... the FCC recently certified a compact tablet from Samsung that offers full support for AT&T-flavored LTE, and from all appearances, it could very well be the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3. Most tellingly, the SM-T217A measures 186 x 110mm, which is a near-perfect match for the WiFi-only slate that strutted through the FCC this past May. This time around, the tablet supports LTE Bands 2, 4, 5 and 17, UMTS (3G) connectivity over the 850 / 1900MHz bands, along with dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth LE. Regardless of the product's ultimate name, it seems the Galaxy Note 8.0 will soon find a smaller sibling at AT&T. Just don't confuse it for the upcomingGalaxy Mega 6.3.

The Apple iPhone 6 – which is what everyone is assuming Apple’s next iPhone will be called – has had no official confirmation, but that won’t stop it being the most wanted gadget on the planet.

Just hours after the unveiling of Google’s Nexus 7, the firm’s senior VP reveals a new Nexus 10 is on the way.
WSJ reporter Amir Efrati claims that Google’s Sundar Pichal told him that a new 10-inch Nexus is coming ‘in the near future’.
Other than the fact that the new 10-inch Nexus will be built by Samsung, not much else is known about the device, although rumours suggest it could sport Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
The Nexus 7, which was built by Asus, was unveiled on July 24th, featuring the world’s highest resolution tablet screen.
In other Samsung new, the firm has today reported a 47.5 per cent rise in April-June operating profit. With the smartphone market - which Samsung dominates - slowing down, it is believed Samsung will invest more in chips and panels.

The original Google and ASUS-developed Nexus 7 was launched around a year ago, and the pair have now released a shiny new version, again called the Nexus 7, which makes the grand boast of having "the world’s sharpest seven-inch tablet screen."
It sports more than 2.3 million pixels, equivalent to 323 pixels per inch, meaning text, images and video will have HD quality.
Google will first show love to its Stateside kin by launching in the US on July 30th, claiming more unspecified countries will follow.
The new mini slate weighs 290g and battery power will enable nine hours of video playback or ten hours of web browsing or e-reading, with wireless charging on offer if it does run out of juice.
Google's new Play Games app will act as a rival to Apple's Game Centre, allowing gamers to track achievements and compete with friends or other players globally, with titles like Gameloft's Asphalt 8: Airborne optimised specifically for the device.
Baudouin Corman, VP of publishing for the Americas, Gameloft, said: "Asphalt 8 is the ideal game to demonstrate the great capabilities of Google's newest device. With incredible graphics, and lifelike physics, Nexus 7 helps push tablet gaming forward and brings our vision for Asphalt 8 to reality."
With some families sharing tablets between a household, the 7 comes with customisable spaces to let each user have customisable spaces for home screens, wallpaper, apps, and other content, which is achieved with the new Android Jelly Bean 4.3 upgrade.
In terms of specs, the tablet comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip, 2GB of RAM, wi-fi or 4G LTE – the latter is supported by 'hundreds of global networks,' scratch resistant glass, 1.2MP front-facing camera and 5MP rear camera, NFC, and an 8.65mm depth.

Android tablets own 50 per cent of the market compared to iPad's 40 per cent.
Shipments of Apple's iPad are expected to drop to ten to twelve million units in the third quarter compared to the 14.6 million announced in the second quarter, supply sources have told Digitimes.
From the first quarter to the second, shipments of iPad and iPad minis dropped around five million.
Apple is known for its rapid update of devices, so this decline could be down to consumers holding out until the next update, or possibly even moving on to competitors who spend more time on current devices rather than its future gadgets.
With the electronics company being so on top of its game by keeping products ahead of the market, it could be shooting itself in the foot.
Android OEMs have also cut the price of their devices, which also affected the iPad shipments in the second quarter, with the Google OS-powered tablets owning around 50 per cent of the market leaving Apple lagging behind with 40 per cent.
The new iPad products are not expected until later this year, meaning that unless it considers a significant price cut on current products, then this decline could become a pattern in its results.

But CEO expects to see a few developers making $1 million by the end of the year
Just 27 per cent of Ouya owners have paid for a game on the micro-console, company CEO Julie Uhrman has revealed.
Speaking to The Verge, Uhrman said despite the low number, the figure was actually significant for a console focused on free gaming.
Every developer who makes a title for the Ouya must offer some form of free play, whether that is through the free-to-play model or a demo of the gameplay.
Uhrman said 13 of the console's top 20 grossing apps had recorded a monetisation rate of eight per cent, that is, consumers upgrading from free to paid.
Despite the low sales so far, the Ouya CEO remained confident the console would see a few developers make their first million dollars by the end of the year.

A few days ago, the CyanogenMod teamed named Nemesis, a series of planned improvements to the user interface. An anonymous reader writes with news of the first part: a new camera application designed to replace the neglected stock Android camera app. From the article:"As cameras and camera software becomes an increasingly important part of our mobile experience, a great photography experience on your smartphone can make all the difference. The CyanogenMod project has decided to take smartphone photography a lot more seriously with the release of Focal, and all new camera app for CM users everywhere."Android Police also has an early look with screenshots. The menu system in particular looks a lot nicer to use than the current cumbersome interface to white balance/exposure/scene settings. Focal should be merged into nightly releases soon.

The idea of Samsung as a Google rival isn't unprecedented. For the past several quarters, Samsung has progressively molded Android to its own vision: layered with TouchWiz and sprinkled with all sorts of Samsung-centric apps, the software interface on Samsung devices is deviating rapidly away from the 'stock' Android that runs on other manufacturers' devices. During this year's unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S4 at New York City's Radio City Music Hall, Samsung executives onstage barely mentioned the word 'Android,' and played up features designed specifically for the device. Establishing its own brand identity by moving away from 'stock' Android has done Samsung a lot of good: its smartphones and tablets not only stand out from the flood of Android devices on the market, but it's given the company an opportunity to position itself as the one true rival to iOS. While other Android manufacturers struggle, Samsung has profited. If Samsung continues to gain strength, it could become a huge issue for Google, which has its own eye on the hardware segment. Although Google purchased Motorola in 2011 for $12.5 billion, it hasn't yet remolded the brand in its own image, claiming that the subsidiary's existing pipeline of products first needs to be flushed into the ecosystem. But that reluctance could be coming to an end: reports suggest that Google will pump $500 million into marketing theMoto X, an upcoming 'hero' smartphone meant to reestablish Motorola's dominance of the Android space. If the Moto X succeeds, and Google decides to push aggressively into the branded hardware space, it could drive Samsung even further away from core Android. Never mind issuing TouchWiz updates until the original Android interface is virtually unrecognizable—with its industry heft, Samsung could potentially boot Google Play from the home-screen and substitute it with an apps-and-content hub of its own design. That would take a lot of work, of course: first, Samsung would need to build a substantial developer ecosystem, and then it would need to score great deals with movie studios and other content providers. But as Amazon and Apple have shown, such things aren't impossible. The only questions are whether (a) Samsung has the will to devote the necessary time and resources to such a project, and (b) if it's willing to transform its symbiotic relationship with Google into an antagonistic one.

Microsoft's priorities are Windows, Office, Xbox, and Surface. Windows Phone is no where near the top and that is the main reason why it has failed to make the impact many hoped for in the three years it has been around. While Microsoft can take the hit and play the long-game, the same cannot be said for Nokia, the other main player in the eco-system. While it has done all it can to evolve the platform, it needs Microsoft to step up and begin innovating. Bryan Biniak, Nokia VP, agrees: 'We are trying to evolve the cultural thinking [at Microsoft] to say 'time is of the essence.' Waiting until the end of your fiscal year when you need to close your targets, doesn't do us any good when I have phones to sell today.'"

Capy Games reveals sales breakdown on hit multiplatform game by device and price
[h=3]Capybara Games[/h]
Capybara Games' critically acclaimed Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP was already considered a hit, but the Toronto-based developer today released aninfographic providing insight into not just the game's level of success, but where and how it's enjoyed that success.
According to Capy, Sword & Sworcery has sold more than 1.5 million units since its March 2011 launch as an iPad game. Since then, it has been brought to iPhone, Android, PC, Mac, and Linux.
Its original home has been the most lucrative for Capy, with iOS sales accounting for 55 percent of the game's revenue. The game's participation in three pay-what-you-want Humble Bundle sales promotions has also helped out, accounting for about 20 percent of sales, with Steam adding another 19 percent on top of that. Behind those, Google Play reaped 5 percent of the game's revenue, though it didn't arrive on that storefront until the very end of 2012.
Capy also broke down the ratio of copies sold for a discount versus those that fetched full price. Apple users proved more willing to buy the game at full price, with 86 percent of sales coming at the original $5 price. The game normally sells for $8 on Steam, which saw a 50-50 split in discount versus full price sales. The game saw more thrifty customers on Google Play, with only 23 percent of people paying the full $5 for the game on the Android storefront.

CEO Julie Uhrman defends console's divisive first month on the market
Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman believes that developers on the nascent platform will be reporting revenue in the millions by the end of the year.
Speaking to The Verge, Uhrman challenged the micro-console's critics, who have rallied around its lacklustre reviews and underwhelming sales figures. On the latter issue, Uhrman revealed that 27 per cent of Ouya users have bought a game - all of which are free-to-play initially - since its launch last month, and 13 or the top 20 games report 8 per cent of players choosing to pay.
"I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 percent attach rate on a platform that's 30 days old," Uhrman said. "These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles, and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year, we'll see a few developers telling us they've made more than a million dollars on Ouya."
Ouya developers started reporting their first-month sales figures earlier this week. Several developers expressed disappointment with the performance of their games, with some questioning the worth of the extra effort required to port to the platform.
However, others seemed content with the extra revenue, even though it amounted to only a few thousand extra sales. Indeed, Uhrman offered two of those games - TowerFall, which has made $21,000 to date, and Hidden In Plain Sight, which has made $4,381 - as evidence of Ouya's promise.
"To say developers can't make money on Ouya - I take offense to that," she said. "I'm sure the creators of TowerFall and Hidden in Plain Sight would take offense to that. The console has only been out for a month, and developers have only had access to the hardware for about 6 months. We really like what we see so far, and so do developers and gamers."
Last week, Ouya announced a new initiative that will match a developer's crowd-funded capital dollar-for-dollar in exchange for a period of exclusivity. This move, Uhrman explained, is a manifestation of Ouya's belief that "content is critical" to the platform's future success. That success, though, will take time.
"Five days after launch, reviews came out and people were writing us off. If every company that got mixed results right out of the gate would have given up, we wouldn't have an iPhone, we wouldn't have an iPod."

Android variants come in various guises, some liberating, some a bit cheeky, and others, entirely free. Free, as in free to you, and free from any kind of licensing issues -- and Replicant is one such example. The project has been around since 2010, but a new fundraising initiative by the Free Software Foundation promises to give it a vital boost. The key difference with Replicant and many other Android spin-offs is that it doesn't rely on proprietary software for it to play nice with vendor hardware. While most of Android is free, it's at this hardware interface level that things get a bit more complex. The FSF hopes that by driving investment towards Replicant more hardware can be supported, in turn opening the OS up to even more users. Sound like something you can get behind? Head over to the source and show your support.

We're sure glad there's iFixit to take apart new gadgets so we don't have to, and it comes as no surprise that the next-gen Nexus 7 is one of its latest experiments. If you've read our hands-on with the device, you won't be surprised by much of what the folks at iFixit saw while tearing it down. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the new version has huge improvements when it comes to repairability. Its huge battery is glued to an adhesive tray, and like its predecessor, its display seems to be the biggest problem -- you'll need a heat gun to get it out. Still, iFixit gives it a score of 7 out of 10, because all they needed to pry it open was a plastic tool.

It's no secret that Windows Phone 8 users miss out on a variety of hit Android and iOS apps, including the ever-popular Instagram. Whether that application will ever make its way to Nokia's lineup is anyone's guess, but one new download will enable you to engage your better-equipped friends, albeit in a limited capacity. Hipstamatic Oggl, which is available free for Nokia's Lumia 928, 925, 920 and 820 today, brings a selection of filters, and, perhaps most notably for some, allows you to share your images on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, in addition to the Oggl network. You can only upload your photos to Instagram, though -- you can't view images there, or add likes and comments.
Each download includes five "lenses" and five "films," though you can access the full library of filters with a $3 three-month or $10 one-year subscription. If you're not interested in paying to change colors and add borders, you can still snag 60 days of free access by downloading the app and creating an account before August 9th. Additionally, Lumia 1020 owners will have access to the Hipstamatic Oggl PRO app, which adds exclusive control over settings like white balance, ISO and shuttle speed. Download both at the source links below.

It's no secret that Samsung's working on a next-gen Galaxy Note, but little did we know that it might come in three screen sizes. We've previously seen the model number SM-N900 pop up in a number of places, and this time, our friend @techkiddy spotted the screen sizes alongside some new names on Zauba, a database that somehow tracks India's import and export shipments.
Unlike the rumors out there that only mention a single screen size, Zauba lists all 5.5-, 5.7- and 6-inch versions of this supposed Note III, and that these are all shipped to India "for R&D purpose." If true, this would match the multi-size strategy of theGalaxy Mega. Additionally, there are a handful of variant names here: SM-N900A, SM-N900AI, SM-N900P, SM-N900R4, SM-N900S, SM-N900T and SM-N900V. We're not quite sure what the differences are, but some of these are tagged with multiple screen sizes, so they're probably just packaged with different radios. Regardless, we have a feeling that JK Shin will tell us everything at IFA in September.

Installing an Android app brings up a permissions prompt that most folks ignore (though they probably shouldn't). But, what if you could grant applications access to some parts of your smartphone and not others? That's something Android Police have discovered is already baked into Android 4.3, and it's called "Apps Ops." The feature is hidden by default, but can easily be enabled via a third-party app in the Play Store, which brings it to life and allows you to fine tune other apps' permissions to read your contacts, access your location via GPS, or even read your call log. This is a buried feature and we have no idea if and when it'll be officially activated, but it looks like Google's pledge for better privacy could mean more than just an incognito mode.

We've seen Android run on anything from low-resolution smartwatches to high-PPIphones and tablets, including the new 1920 x 1200-pixel Nexus 7 Google launchedearlier this week. To make this possible, the mobile OS supports a number of pixel densities for app content -- from 120PPI (LDPI / Low DPI) to 480PPI (XXHDPI / Extra Extra High DPI). Close examination of the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) source code reveals the addition of a 640PPI (XXXHDPI / Extra Extra Extra High DPI) pixel density, which -- according to the comments in the code -- is intended for 4Ktelevisions. Does this mean we'll begin to see Android devices with 640PPI Ultra HDdisplays? Perhaps, but considering 480PPI is overkill on handsets, this is most likely designed to make image assets and fonts, such as the Google TV UI, readable on 4K screens when viewed from a distance.

Fresh reports on the state of the cellphone market during Q2 2013 have blown through the barn door, and industry analysts are flaunting some fairly impressive figures. Smartphones have outsold their less-intelligent brethren for the second quarter in a row, and Strategy Analytics says shipments hit a record-breaking 237.9 million. According to IDC, Samsung managed to ship a total of 72.4 million smartphones during Q2 -- a 43.9% boost year-over-year -- with help of the Galaxy S 4 and price cuts to the GS3. To put that in perspective, that's more than double the 31.2 million iPhones Apple managed to ship, and Strategy Analytics claims this marks a three-year low in Cook and Co.'s marketshare. While LG and ZTE each occupy third and fifth place, respectively, Lenovo pushed Huawei out of the number four slot by sending out 11.3 million handsets. If you're craving for more stats, hit the break for a trio of press releases.

Apple has partially restored access to its developer services, which went down for maintenance on Thursday, July 18 after being hacked.
"We appreciate your patience as we work to bring our developer services back online," an update on Apple's developer site reads. "Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, software downloads, and other developer services are now available."
According to Apple's system status page, the member center, Xcode automatic configuration, pre-release documentation, program enrollment and renewals, developer forums, videos, App Store resource center and technical support services are still offline. Apple will extend program membership and keep developers' apps on the App Store if their membership "expired or is set to expire during this downtime."

Apple has assembled a team of notable speech technology bods in Boston to further enhance Siri for iOS 7.
Sources have told Xconomy that the team includes a number of former VoiceSignal Technologies employees – the company that was purchased by Apple partner Nuance in 2007.
The team includes Larry Gillick, a former vice president of research at Nuance. Gillick’s Apple job is listed as ‘Chief Speech Scientist, Siri’.
This news has caused many to ponder if Apple is planning to move its Siri software completely in-house, moving away from relying on Nuance.
It wouldn’t be completely unnatural for Apple, who dumped Google Maps and made its own mobile mapping app last year.
In iOS 7, it is believed Siri will see speed enhancements and better pronunciation, as well as a set of new voices.

An image has been leaked showing what appears to be the retail packaging for an Apple product called the iPhone 5C.
The pic was posted on Chinese discussion forumWeiPhone, where rumours suggest the iPhone 5C is the budget, plastic-encased phone that Apple is expected to release alongside it’s new flagship.
Previously thought to be called the iPhone 5S, some sites report that the ‘C’ in the 5C stands for ‘colour’, which would be in keeping with a mound of rumours suggesting that the budget iPhone will come in an array of colours.
The iPhone 5S/5C is expected to have similar specs to the iPhone 4S. A previous photo leak fromWeiPhone shows what appears to be the budget phone in three different colours – yellow, orange and green.
The new device is rumoured to be unveiled along with the iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 and iPhone 6 in September.

Nokia VP of App development, Bryan Biniak has revealed that the firm is frustrated at Microsoft’s slow Windows Phone progress.
In an interview with International Business Times, Biniak has expressed that Nokia is getting a little tired of Microsoft’s slow progress when it comes to applications for its Windows Phone devices, implying that the company has started to take matters into its own hands. "As a company we don't want to rely on somebody else and sit and wait for them to get it right."
Biniak told the publication about his concerns that consumers will be less willing to adopt new phones if Microsoft takes too long porting over the right apps. "We are releasing new devices frequently and for every new device, if there is an app that somebody cares about that's not there that's a missed opportunity of a sale.
“You can't sell a phone without the apps, you just can't."
Nokia recently released its latest flagship smartphone, the Lumia 1020, as well as its new budget 4G Windows smartphone, the Lumia 625.

iOS grows 5.2 per cent to 30.5 per cent of the British smartphone market.
During the three month period before June, Apple has experienced a 5.2 per cent growth, increasing to 30.5 per cent of the British smartphone market, boosted by consumers new to Apple attracted by the lower and more competitive price of the iPhone 4, revealed Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Even though the iPhone 5 drove Apple's recent global results, it was the iPhone 4 that encouraged the increase of much of the market share.
More than a third of iPhone 4's sold were to first time customers compared to just one in 10 new customers to iPhone 5.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: "Margins are tighter at the entry-level end of the market, but as consumers become more engaged with their level smartphone they are increasingly prepared to invest more when they upgrade.
"Apple boasts the highest level of customer loyalty of the operating systems, and by capturing consumers at entry-level it is in a good position to grow customer base in future."
iOS is slowly making a comeback, however its competitor Android still owns the UK market as a whole with 56.2 per cent, as it is across five other european markets including Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
Even though Nokia are lagging behind the likes of Apple and Android, it has recently launched the budget Nokia Lumia 625 which includes all the features expected from the 4G Lumia without the price tag in a bid to win back some fans.
So it appears that its the cheaper the better, and with 87 per cent of devices sold in Great Britain being smartphones, its a market that is just going to get more competitive.
Sunnebo continued: "With almost 19 million feature phone owners left in Britain, there is still a lot of iOS and the other platforms to compete for."

South Korean OEM currently rumoured to enhance speed and ability by ten per cent.
Today's post from Phones 4u observes the success of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 champion, which reached 10m sales in a month, and highlights a number of improvements and tweaks that can make the device a true joy to use.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 has already achieved record sales thanks to some great specs and a wealth of software innovations, further cementing the Korean firm as a leading smartphone manufacturer.
There are two versions of the Galaxy S4, and depending on your region, the device will either have a 1.6GHz Exynos 5 octa-core processor, or a 1.9GHz quad-core to keep things running along smoothly.
The decision to launch two variations of the handset didn’t come without its criticisms despite J.K. Shin, head of Samsung Mobile, previously telling buyers that there “isn’t much difference” between the two processors in terms of performance.
But rumour has it that Samsung is currently working on new software, set to be released later this summer, in a bid to enhance the speed and ability of all of its Galaxy S4 devices by a further ten per cent.
Here in the UK, there’s a heap of fantastic Samsung Galaxy S4 deals up for grabs, and many users are now reaping the benefits of the quad-core variant, which currently stands as one of the fastest smartphone processors in the UK. Whether you’re multitasking, watching HD videos or playing highly-intensive games there’s very little lag or stutter.
But the many new software features to come loaded on to the Galaxy S4 have been labelled as “gimmicky” by some industry experts, and can in fact impact the performance of the device. So, here are few handy hints to ensure your Galaxy S4 continues to run without a hitch.
Speed up responsiveness of home button
Double tapping the home button launches S Voice, a great feature that lets users find out the answer to almost any question asked of it as well as performing a range of different functions.
However some tests have found that mapping this feature to the home key causes notable lag and reduce the speed at which the button responds. The device will wait a short while in case you’re going to make a second tap to active S Voice.
To disable the shortcut open up the app, tap Settings and untick the box next to ‘open via the home key’. It’ll certainly make returning back to the home screen a lot more efficient.
Turn off unlock effect feature
The lock screen may look pretty but the “sunshine” unlock animation, which sees a light effect follow the movement of your finger across the lock screen, can affect the speed at which the display comes on after pressing the power button.
To disable this effect go to Settings, tap My Device, press Lock Screen and select None to deactivate the animation all together.
Add widgets to the lock screen
This is a really useful feature that means emails and text messages can be read without having to unlock the device. Although these are switched off by default they can be enabled manually by going to the Settings menu, tapping on My Device, then Lock Screen and selecting the Multiple Widgets option.
Not only does this speed up the rate at which you can access your messages but it will also save you some battery power as you won’t have to unlock the handset every time a new message comes through.
Switch on developer options
This option is great for those who don’t mind sacrificing a few visual enhancements in favour of speed. Developer options give users greater control over the Galaxy S4’s settings, for instance once activated users can set flags for the handset to stay awake while charging and debug the software. The later also allows you to use what is known as the Android Debug Bridge utility to side-load apps.
Although this feature is hidden by default on the Galaxy S4, it can be switched on by tapping Build Number several times. This option can be found in Settings, then More and finally About Device.
With so much going on under the hood it’s not surprising that the Galaxy S4 is prone to bouts of stutter and lag. Hopefully these top tips will go a long to ensure your new device runs smoothly and doesn’t leave you wishing you’d opted for one of the hundreds of other cheap mobile phone contracts also on offer at the moment.

"Prompted by the addition of new security features in Android 4.3 that limit the effectiveness of elevated privileges, Steve Kondik wonders which uses really require full root. Most common activities that prompt owners to root their devices (backup/restore tools, firewall/DNS resolver management, kernel tuning), could be accomplished without exposing root, argues Kondik, by providing additional APIs and extensions to the user. This would improve security by limiting the exposure of the system to exploits. Reasonable enough, on the face of it. The title of the post, however, suggests that Kondik believes that eventually all useful activities can be designed into the system so the 'dangerous and insecure' abilities provided by root/administrator privileges aren't needed. This kind of top-down thinking seems a bit troubling because it leads to greater control of the system by the developer at the expense of the owner of the device. It's been said that the best tools are those that lend themselves to uses not anticipated by the creator. Reducing or eliminating the ability of the owner to use a device in ways that are unanticipated ultimately reduces its potential power and usefulness. Perhaps that's what is wanted to prevent an owner from using the device in ways that are inconvenient or contrary to an established business model."

Advocacy group China Labour Watch has laid a fresh set of allegations at the feet of Apple regarding the conditions placed upon its Chinese workforce.
Bloomberg reports that the organisation has accused Apple’s Taiwanese supplier Pegatron Corp of “using underage workers, paying insufficient wages and forcing employees to work overtime”.
86 labour rights violations have been identified in total for a period between March and July of this year. 36 of these are legal breaches and 50 are ethical breaches.
The average worker’s weekly working hours are said to have hit between 66 and 69 hours, far in excess of China’s 49-hour limit.
Apple has vowed to launch a probe into the allegations, saying: “We will investigate these new claims thoroughly, ensure that corrective actions are taken where needed and report any violations of our code of conduct. We will not tolerate deviations from our code.”
It is understood that Apple has already conducted 15 audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007
Last year Apple was embroiled in controversy over the conditions that workers at infamous Chinese manufacturer Foxconn were forced to tolerate. It later vowed “to cut ties with Chinese suppliers who are found to employ underage workers”.

For those of you eagerly following the seemingly never-ending legal battle between Apple and Samsung (cue crickets), a recent decision by the US Patent and Trademark Office has thrown a wrench into Apple's master plan. According to documents filed by Samsung in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on Sunday, Apple's Patent No. 7,844,915, which covers the two-finger pinch-to-zoom gesture, was found wanting by the USPTO due to it being anticipated by other patents and declared otherwise non-patentable, much like its "overscroll bounce" claim. Apple has up to two months to dispute the decision, though whether or not that action would gain the company any ground, either with federal court or the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, remains to be seen.

The Moto X smartphone will be unveiled in NYC on Thursday August 1st.
It will be the first flagship smartphone to be released by Motorola since Google acquired the firm last year.
What we know – fact-wise – about the Moto X so far is that it will be the first smartphone assembled entirely in the USA.Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside revealed this information during an interview with All Things Digital in May.
Regarding the phone’s features, Woodside said: “It’s going to know when you want to take a picture and fire up the camera.”
On the rumour side of things, a leaked video allegedly featuring a Rogers representative turned up online earlier this month, implying that the phone would feature always-on voice command, active updates and the ability to access the phone’s camera with a flick of the wrist.
The Moto X is also rumoured to come with a 4.8-inch display and likely to run on Android 4.3.
As for the look of the Moto X smartphone, Google chairman Eric Schmidt was seen making a call on a mystery white phone with a Motorola logo earlier this month.

Apple says its in-car technology iOS in the Car will be a key focus for the firm as it continues to partner with vehicle manufacturers.
The technology - due to launch in 2014 - pairs an iOS device with a car's dashboard system. For example, a vehicle that comes equipped with iOS in the Car can connect to an iPhone 5 and interact with it using a built-in display or Siri Eyes Free. The latter allows drivers to ask Siri questions or ask for directions while the iPhone screen remains blank, so not to distract drivers.
iOS in the Car lets users make phone calls, play music, send and receive messages, get directions and more.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an analyst call, as reported by AppleInsider.com: "I see it as very important. It is a part of the ecosystem. And so just like the App Store is a key part of the ecosystem, and iTunes and all of our content is key, and the services we provide from messaging to Siri and so forth, having something in the automobile is very very important.
"It's something that people want. And I think that Apple can do this in a unique way and better than anyone else. So it's a key focus for us."

Nokia, perhaps more-so than any other smartphone manufacturer in the game right now, needed to find a way to make something special. The new Nokia Lumia 1020, though it sports essentially the same internals and display as Nokia's Lumia 920, most definitely is different, and perhaps even an attractive alternative, depending on your specific needs. 41 megapixels of resolution, floating image stabilization and a powerful camera app to back it up, will make the Lumia 1020 pretty 'special' to some people, some of whom might be considering a Windows Phone for the first time as a result. Initial impressions of the device and its camera performance, show Nokia's new flagship device does shoot impressive still images and video, thanks in part to the Lumia 1020's image sensor and stabilization features. Nokia's Pro Cam app is comprised of a slick dial interface that offers virtually all of the controls you'd find in a DSLR camera. From White Balance, to ISO, Focus, Exposure and Flash Control, it's all in there. When you snap a picture, the 1020's camera grabs two versions of the shot; a large full resolution (7700x4300, roughly) shot with a huge 11MB file size is captured and an additional 5MP image is derived from that and stored as well. The results, especially in decent lighting, can be impressive."

GameStick is part of the vanguard of the crowdfunded microconsole movement, and the challenge for any would-be platform holder now is how to differentiate your product from the rest. For PlayJam, a UK-based company that made its name and its millions creating casual games for smart TVs, its console’s USP is volume. Not in terms of production run – just 80,000 will be manufactured initially, the majority destined to fulfil the orders of the system’s Kickstarter backers – but the space it occupies. GameStick is a dongle-sized console that plugs into your TV via HDMI, runs Android games, and can be carried around in your pocket.Fashioned in conjunction with an unnamed product design company, it may not match Apple’s line for sleek mainstream desirability, but it holds its own next to the broader console crowd. But looks are largely irrelevant to a home system’s success, and the more pressing question is whether the ease of transporting consoles is a problem that needs solving. In this age of expansive widescreen sets, televisions are as inert as the boxes beneath them. And with the ubiquity of Android-based smartphones, which already act as portable gaming systems, why do we need a TV-tethered plug-in console?Anthony Johnson, PlayJam’s chief marketing officer, is certain there is a need for GameStick. “I think there’s a huge market for this product,” he says. “You can’t carry around a plasma TV with you, but generally there’s a TV most places you go. Imagine you’re travelling on holiday, [and] your kids want to bring a videogame console with them. You don’t want to lug an Xbox One to your hotel. GameStick solves the problem, slipping imperceptibly into a bag or rucksack. Or for people reluctantly visiting their mother-in-law who want some entertainment to make the stay more bearable, GameStick is ideal. We believe there’s an appetite for a portable big-screen gaming solution.”

Leaked pictures of plastic packaging marked with iPhone 5C.
The picture shows a container of plastic boxes with 'iPhone 5C' branded down the side, as shown on Chinese website WeiPhone - could this be the packaging for the new budget iPhone? Or is it just a container of plastic boxes with 'iPhone 5C' branded down the side!
It has already been revealed that Apple indicated the release of a budget version of its latest iPhone, and that it could be available in a variety of colours, possibly indicating what the 'C' stands for in the name.
Previously Apple has stuck to releasing one device per year, however this could mark a change in strategy as the budget iPhone 5C is to be released around the same time as the new iPhone.
The budget version is rumoured to be made of cheaper materials such as plastic, instead of the pricey metal and glass that its posher peers are made out of, and said to be priced at around $99.
The next iPhone (5S? 6?) will no doubt be the usual slight upgrade as previous models and will most certainly create the same stir as always.
However with the addition of the cheaper version being introduced into it's line up, Apple could be opening itself up to a whole new market - giving its slowing sales a boost to combat Samsung's increasing popularity and Google Androids domination of the market as a whole.

Social network giant to promote selected titles to its 800 million monthly mobile users
Facebook has revealed a new mobile game publishing pilot program aimed at helping small and medium-sized developers.
The new initiative will see the social networking giant provide promotional support to “high-potential” developers for their titles in placements across its mobile apps.
Facebook plans to harness its 800 million monthly users on mobile and 260 million game players on its social network to help promote new titles around the world.
It said its aim is for games to reach people who already play them, highlighting strategy titles to users playing strategy games for example.
“We are invested in the success of these games, and in exchange for a revenue share, we will be collaborating deeply with developers in our program by helping them attract high-quality, long-term players for their games,” said Facebook software engineer Victor Medeiros.

The head of police for Moscow's subway system has said stations will soon be equipped with devices that can read the data on the mobile telephones of passengers. In the July 29 edition of Izvestia, Moscow Metro police chief Andrei Mokhov said the device would be used to help locate stolen mobile phones. Mokhov said the devices have a range of about 5 meters and can read the SIM card. If the card is on the list of stolen phones, the system automatically sends information to the police. The time and place of the alert can be matched to closed-circuit TV in stations. Izvestia reported that 'according to experts, the devices can be used more widely to follow all passengers without exception.' Mokhov said it was illegal to track a person without permission from the authorities, but that there was no law against tracking the property of a company, such as a SIM card.' What is this all about? Is it really about detecting stolen phones/SIM cards, or is that a convenient 'cover story' for eavesdropping on people's private smartphone data while they wait to ride the subway? Also — if this scheme goes ahead, how long will it be before the U.S., Europe and other territories employ devices that do this, too?

The first heady rush of support for Canonical's crowd-funded Ubuntu Edge smartphone appears to have tapered off, as donations for the eye-catching device have slowed substantially over the past several days. The project sits just above the $7 million mark at the time of this writing – a large sum by the standards of crowd-funded projects, to be sure, but the $32 million goal is still a long way off. The Edge is slightly, but measurably, behind schedule – by about $600,000, according to a tracking graph made by Canonical's Gustavo Niemeyer. However, there's speculation that wealthy Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth might contribute some of his personal fortune to the project."The campaign has already broken records with its spectacular first few days. I hope that Shuttleworth does kick in to make production feasible, because the idea and the design are impressive — but I'm leery of spending quite so much on any phone.

We expected the Samsung Galaxy NX camera to cost a bundle when it was first announced, and if pricing from UK retailer Jessops proves accurate, we aren't going to be "disappointed." The Android-powered mirrorless model will run Ł1,299 ($2,000 or so) with an 18-55mm kit lens, more than Canon's fearsome EOS 70D and pushing Panasonic's flagship GH-3. As you may recall, the Galaxy NX is the first-ever interchangeable-lens camera to run Android, and packs 3G / 4G LTE radios along with a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, 8.6fps shooting speed, WiFi, 16GB built-in storage, and 1/6000 shutter speed. We noted such strange bedfellows might make it a hard sell, especially considering some shortcomings for demanding photographers, like a slow start-up time and lack of manual dials. Jessops is showing the model in stock, while another retailer called Wex merely has it up for pre-order, so we're not sure which has it straight. In any event, if you're one of the few who thought high-end cameras reallyneeded an Android OS, hit the sources.

Remember that China Labor Watch report we recently covered? After digging further into the document, 9to5Mac's Computerworld's unearthed more possible evidence about that often leaked, low-cost plastic-clad iPhone. The introduction states:Its assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones.
Then, on page 27:Today's work is to paste protective film on the iPhone's plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple. [...] The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important.
Of course, there's no definitive proof that Apple will be launching a more affordable iPhone made of polycarbonate -- after all the company might just be testing prototypes that are not destined to market. Still, the information in this report sure gives all theserecent iPhone rumors a lot more merit.

It's no secret that many Android phones and tablets show a decrease in performance over time. Nexus devices are not immune -- it's particularly noticeable with the original Nexus 7. Our friend Brian Klug over at AnandTech discovered an interesting tidbit while testing the new and improved Nexus 7: Android 4.3 supports TRIM. What this means is that Google's mobile OS can now instruct the flash storage controller when to collect / recycle unused data pages / blocks. The net result is that devices runningAndroid 4.3 will no longer become sluggish with time -- in fact, existing Nexus handsets and tablets will see performance improve after the update. It also looks likeJelly Bean invokes TRIM maintenance once within a 24-hour window (after one hour of inactivity), and only if the battery is 80% full (30% when charging). Follow the source link below for all the details.

Researchers at UCLA have developed a solar film that could be placed on a smartphone display to harvest energy from the sun.
Yang Yang, who led the research, said the cells could serve as a power-generating layer on windows and smartphone displays.
Composed of two thin polymer solar cells that collect sunlight and convert it to power, the solar film is see-through, so it won’t obstruct the user’s view of the screen.
UCLA has a working prototype of the film ready, although there is no word yet on when the technology will be deployed.

Samsung has announced dual-mode LTE versions of its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini smartphones.
The phones will work with different types of 4G networks, meaning users can use LTE across different parts of the world, whether it’s the standard FDD-LTE or the new TDD-LTE, which is popping up over China.
“The first commercially available TDD/FDD seamless handover devices will allow customers to fully enjoy the benefits of fast mobile data communications no matter where they are,” said co-CEO and president of Samsung’s IT and mobile division JK Shin.
These new additions join a host of other Galaxy S4 variants, including the Zoom – a smartphone with a 16MP camera and 10x zoom lens, and the Active, which sports the same 1.9GHz quad core processor as the S4, but can be submerged under a metre of water for up to 30 minutes.

[h=1]Social network responds to more than 100,000 complaints against user being threatened with rape on Twitter.
Journalist and feminist Caroline Criado-Perez was recently campaigning on Twitter for more women's faces to be found on banknotes, which resulted in one deranged user threatening her with rape.
Criado-Perez reached out to Twitter manager of journalism and news, Mark S. Luckie, who failed to act or respond to the cries for help. This resulted in the launch of a petition for all Twitter accounts to feature a 'report abuse button,' which has notched up more than 102,000 supporters.
The petition said: "Abuse on Twitter is common; sadly too common. And it frequently goes ignored. We need Twitter to recognise that it's current reporting system is below required standards.
"It currently requires users to search for details on how to report someone for abuse; a feature that should be available on each user's page. It is time Twitter took a zero tolerance policy on abuse. It's time Twitter started protecting its users."
Twitter has now responded, taking the opportunity to boast 400 million tweets a day sent globally, and insists the recently 'report tweet' button added to iPhone and the mobile web will debut on Android and desktops.
Del Harvey, senior director of trust & safety at Twitter, said: "While manually reviewing every tweet is not possible due to Twitter’s global reach and level of activity, we use both automated and manual systems to evaluate reports of users potentially violating our Twitter Rules. These rules explicitly bar direct, specific threats of violence against others and use of our service for unlawful purposes, for which users may be suspended when reported.
"To the extent that our system is based around the filing of reports with our Trust & Safety team, we strive to make it easier and more practical to file them. Three weeks ago, we rolled out the ability to file reports from an individual Tweet on our iPhone app and the mobile version of our site, and we plan to bring this functionality to Android and desktop web users."

Apple's iPad could finally be in trouble. Sales of its all-singing, all-dancing tablet, which has been dominating the market since launch, fell from 17 million in Q2 2012 to 14.6m in Q2 2013.
Furthermore, its share of iOS web traffic has dipped below 40 per cent.
Strategy Analytics shows that Android is strangling the iPad, as shipments of Google OS-based tablets secured a 67 per cent share of global shipments in Q2 2013, up from 51.4 per cent in Q2 2012.
In terms of units, Android figures almost doubled from 18.5 million in Q2 2012 to 34.6m this year, while Windows tablets rose from 200,000 to 2.3 million.
Peter King, director of tablets at Strategy Analytics, said: "Global branded tablet shipments reached 36.2 million units in Q2 2013, up 47 per cent from 24.6 million in Q2 2012. The branded tablet market had a rest period as very few new products came to market during the quarter.
"When we add in White-Box tablets, shipments reached 51.7 million units, up 43 percent from 36.1 million in Q2 2012. Android is now making steady progress due to hardware partners like Samsung, Amazon, Google and White-Box tablets which, despite the fact that branded OEMs are lowering price-points and putting pressure on the White-Box manufacturers, are still performing well.
India has seen tablet sales rise by 400 per cent over the past year, while further evidence of the market's growth was seen in as sales in Southeast Asia rose 101 per cent.
Comparatively, worldwide smartphone shipments hit record 230 million worldwide.

'Prettier games cost more to make, better games satisfy consumers,' says Riccitiello
Developers chasing console quality graphics on mobile without differentiating gameplay are on a road to ruin, says the former CEO of EA.
Speaking at Casual Connect, as reported byPolygon, John Riccitiello said it was a mistake to simply push for high-end visuals, as development costs could rise steeply without an increase in sales.
Highlighting the example of strategy games in the 90s using 3D graphics, the ex-EA exec said “revenue remained the same because they weren’t innovating”, despite doubling or even tripling expenditure on creating them.
"Investing in better graphics without figuring out what differentiating gameplay you're going to have - without thinking of how gameplay rewards players - is a road to ruin," he said.
"Prettier games cost more to make, better games satisfy consumers."

A recent forum post at Beyond3D made an interesting claim: that the Samsung Galaxy S4's GPU ran at 532 MHz for certain whitelisted benchmark applications, and at 480 MHz for everything else. The folks at AnandTech decided to investigate and found out that the phone does indeed let its GPU run at a higher frequency when particular benchmark software is running. They found a similar oddity with the CPU — it wasn't restricted for other apps, but it was forced to run at max speed during benchmarks. Then they decided to look for direct evidence that this was intentional."Poking around I came across the application changing the DVFS behavior to allow these frequency changes – TwDVFSApp.apk. Opening the file in a hex editor and looking at strings inside (or just running strings on the .odex file) pointed at what appeared to be hard coded profiles/exceptions for certain applications. The string 'BenchmarkBooster' is a particularly telling one. ... Quadrant standard, advanced, and professional, linpack (free, not paid), Benchmark Pi, and AnTuTu are all called out specifically. Nothing for GLBenchmark 2.5.1 though, despite its similar behavior.

The Amazing Frog combines ragdoll physics, a crudely rendered approximation of Swindon and a flatulent frog to form what feels like a YouTube sensation in the making. It’s barely even a game at all. Your goal, I suppose, is to fling the eponymous, invincible amphibian as far as you can by any means possible. That means throwing him down a set of steps, firing him out of a cannon or propelling him into the side of a multi-storey car park to rack up ever higher scores.Unstable, glitchy physics help and hinder your efforts in equal measure, and enrich the slapstick. As well as stairs to tumble down and buildings to plummet from, there are explosives – kept in red barrels, naturally – to blast our hero into the air and bouncy castles to frolic upon. Your soundtrack is mostly the persistent slap of wet, webbed foot on concrete, though developer Fayju has dotted the occasional boom box around its home town, too. They pump out a squelchy, synth-led theme, seemingly stolen from some lo-fi ’90s game show, only endured when your avatar is in earshot.

Platform holders should listen very carefully to consumers as they lay the foundations for their next-gen machines, the CEO of Take-Two has warned.
"Our own view is that meeting consumers where they are is the best way to run a business and you want to make sure that your policies reflect the way people like to consume product," Strauss Zelnick told investors, as reported byCVG.
"We try to be good partners with the console makers – they are our bread and butter, we support them as they do us. We recognise that they set these policies and we encourage the policies to be as open-minded as possible.
“But you can rest assured that we will always be a leader in being flexible and consumer-friendly within the purview of the policies that the console makers set."
Pocket Gamer reports that Zelnick also cited the company’s recent iOS release of XCOM: Enemy Unknown – which was priced at Ł13.99 – proves that there is a market for premium priced smartphone games.
Said the exec: “[The launch was a] success [and] illustrates that consumers are willing to pay a premium price for a premium entertainment. This bodes well for the opportunity to deliver profitably our most immersive triple-A titles to mobile platforms as they evolve.”

It hasn't been easy to bridge differing LTE network types in one phone; ZTE's attemptrequires a reboot, for example. Samsung claims to have solved that problem with new dual-mode LTE versions of the Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy S4 Mini. Both devices can switch between the common FDD-LTE standard and TDD-LTE without restarting, and they'll automatically hand over any ongoing data sessions or voice calls. The advantages are potentially huge for both roaming and bandwidth -- travelers are more likely to stay on 4G, and providers running both FDD and TDD can switch customers to whatever network has the most capacity. Samsung hasn't said where and when the dual-mode Galaxies will be available, although TDD-LTE's worldwide reach (including the US) suggests that the smartphones could soon be commonplace.

These days, carriers seem to be gravitating towards "less for more" -- as in, giving users less while charging more. For those situated in the UK, however, Vodafone's offering up a new pay-as-you-go arrangement that actually smacks of value. The Red Freedom Freebee plans are pretty simple. For instance, Ł30 a month nets you unlimited texts and talk within the United Kingdom coupled with 1GB of data. Cough up Ł40 each month, and that data cap doubles to 2GB. A couple of cheaper plans are available for those who need little more than text messaging and enough data to keep tabs on their email, all of which can be seen in detail at Vodafone's site.

What a difference a year makes. Apple topped American Customer Satisfaction Index'ssmartphone rankings back in 2012, but Samsung has taken the lead in 2013 by a slim margin. Owners responding to ACSI's national survey gave an 84-point score to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II, putting the two Samsung phones just past the 82-point iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. Researchers haven't explained the changing attitudes, although they add that the Galaxy S 4 and other newer phones didn't ship in time to count. It's at least clear that the American sentiment doesn't extend worldwide -- ACSI notes that South Koreans ranked the iPhone 5 higher than the Galaxy S III despite Samsung's home turf advantage. Apple also maintains the lead in ACSI's device-independent scores at 81 points to 76, although Samsung is quickly catching up. It's safe to say that neither smartphone maker can afford to relax.

The MacBook Air's integrated graphics all but rule it out as a serious gaming machine. However, Larry Gadea at the Tech Inferno forums has found a way to make the Air a powerhouse through an ad hoc external GPU. His design mates a PCI Express video card to the Mac's Thunderbolt port through a combination of two adapters, a Boot Camp installation of Windows 7 and third-party software. The performance improvement is appropriately dramatic, leading to frame rates up to seven times faster than what Intel's HD 5000 can manage. Just don't expect to buy a pre-assembled version anytime soon -- the peripheral needs a desktop-class power supply just to run, and Intel won't issue the licenses needed to commercialize Thunderbolt GPUs. If you're absolutely determined to get a Crysis-worthy ultraportable, though, you'll find Gadea's instructions at the source link.
