The Evening Standard's general manager of digital Tim Smith took the stage at London's M-Publishing conference today, to talk about the importance of apps for newspaper publishers.
However, he kicked off by outlining some of the challenges facing traditional media. "The game has completely changed because of online migration, particularly in classifieds," he said.
"Nearly every day publications are being sold or relaunched to try to face up to this challenge... It seems that almost one a week is going into bankruptcy or cutting way back."
The Evening Standard was recently sold by Associated Newspapers to Russian billionnaire Alexander Lebedev, who made the newspaper free and entirely ad-supported.
"The essence of the strategy is to retain the character of a paid-for newspaper, but it's free," explained Smith.
"But we're also getting really interested in devices, and starting to investigate which of those devices offer promise. The new battle is happening in the pocket of the reader."
He pointed out that all the big newspaper groups are investing in downloadable smartphone apps for three reasons: first to find new readers, second to generate more direct revenues, and third to find new advertising revenues.
Smith referred to comScore stats from the UK, indicating that 23% of all mobile users have a smartphone, and 3.5% have an iPhone.
80% of iPhone users and 48% of smartphoen users access news via their device. But 56% of iPhone users and 22% of smartphone users have downloaded an app to access news.
"More smartphone owners had used their phone to read news than had to access email, listen to music or access a social networking site," said Smith. "It's definitely a vote of confidence."
Smith also said that "smartphone users are prepared to pay" for content and applications - a key point for newspaper groups mulling their investment in apps.
He talked about some apps from other publishers. The Guardian's paid iPhone app was downloaded 70,000 times in its first month, generating gross revenues of Ł167,000 before Apple took its 30% cut.
Smith also highlighted the free Sky News iPhone app, which focuses on ads and sponsorship for its revenues, while also promoting Sky's subscription marketing campaigns for its satellite TV business.
And the Evening Standard? The paper just launched a series of smartphone apps in partnership with Handmark: iPhone, but also Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian.
"It's free to the user, mirroring the print strategy," he said. "It would be very difficult for us to charge for an application."
Why work with Handmark rather than develop in-house? "Relationships with OEMs and with carriers too," said Smith.
The commercial model is around revenues from sponsorship and advertising, and Smith said that while the app is relatively simple now, it will be developed further over time.
British Airways is sponsoring the app for two months, having got a plug in the press and online ads promoting the app launches, as well as branding within the app.
Smith didn't have any download figures for the Standard apps yet, as they only launched a week ago.

Asus, which claims to have invented the netbook market with the Eee PC, is going head-to-head with Apple in the tablet market with the launch of the Eee Pad.
A 12-inch version of the device runs a full version of Windows 7, is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and full multitasking – an area in which Apple's offering came up short.
A smaller 10-inch version with reduced specs is also available, running on Windows Embedded Compact 7.
Asus will be hoping to leverage its experience in the netbook market to drive into the tablet area with its new devices, which considering the huge success of the Eee PC could be the most serious threat to the iPad yet.

For a while now Apple has said it doesn't want "widget-like" apps in the store; but where is the boundary of that fuzzy statement? The developers of My Frame, of which three versions had already been approved for the iPhone/iPad, found out that they had already crossed it when Apple informed them their app would be pulled. My Frame had options to overlay data on whatever photo was displaying: a Twitter stream, weather, etc. When one of the developers wrote to Steve Jobs on a whim to ask what unwritten rule their app had violated, Jobs wrote back: "We are not allowing apps that create their own desktops. Sorry."
"I see now why people are so angry at the 'murky' nature of the App Store, and I'm starting to agree with them. My Frame was approved by Apple 3 times (once for each version we released), and... now, at version 1.2 they decide it's to be removed? How can a company be prepared to invest into a platform that can change at any time, cutting you off and kicking you out, with no course of action but to whine on some no-name blog[?] There is no alternative platform, despite what others may say about Android, it's immature and their app store(s) are a wild west nightmare. It really is Apple's way or the highway..."
A few blogs have picked up the story.

Jetstar will start renting out of pre-loaded iPads as a form of inflight entertainment instead of the more typical seat back video system. No word in the article on how or if they will handle Wi-Fi connections, but interestingly it does mention that they will be usable during takeoff and landings — something that will be sure to spark lots of discussion regarding planes and modern electronics

Steve Guggenheimer, Microsoft's OEM vice pres, has pulled no punches in responding to a query about the threat posed by Android OS in the burgeoning tablet sector. Describing the early enthusiasm for Android from big hitters like Acer and Dell as a stage of experimentation, the Redmond man tells us he expects "Microsoft's support for Windows 7 will be seen as more valuable over time." In aid of this assertion, he cites the netbook market's development, which started off almost exclusively with Linux installations, yet "three years later it is 95% on Windows." That's quite an incontrovertible track record, but we can't help feeling the Guggenmeister is somewhat underestimating his competition here. He argues the continuous support of Windows 7 will keep OEMs in line, but we've seen Android iterating at a breakneck pace almost since its inception, and it'll be interesting to see if manufacturers opt for new features with Google's wares or cozy security with Microsoft. Either way, as the desktop OS leader, Microsoft is entitled to use such strong words -- we just hope Steve won't have to eat them.

iPhone 4 parts just keep on dribbling out of China and turning up around the world -- this time it's the next-gen phone's outer case on a video from iPhone Portgual. The site actually has two cases, which it says were purchased by a reader in China, and while they look genuine enough, we obviously can't tell for certain whether they're real. In any event, at this rate we'll have enough leaked parts to assemble the entire damn thing by the time Steve takes the stage at WWDC to announce it in a few days -- or hey, maybe he'll just show it off at D8 tonight. Either way, we'll be there.

Remember iFart? The novelty flatulence app was one of the biggest sellers on iPhone's App Store in late 2008, selling more than 100,000 downloads in its first two weeks.
However, developer InfoMedia claims that Apple has rejected a new version - iFart HD - designed for the iPad.
Why? CEO Joel Comm tells TechCrunch that the app was rejected due to having 'minimal functionality', despite another fart app - Farting Zombies - having been approved.
That means no Brown Mosquito sound effects steaming out of an iPad near you anytime soon, until InfoMedia figures out how to add extra features to gain approval.

MTV has launched an iPhone app based on its MTV News, offering a mixture of articles, photos and videos.
The free app covers pop culture, music, TV, celebrities and gaming, pulling in stories from the MTV News site, as well as MTV's stable of blogs.
The app will also be heavily tied in to big MTV events like this week's MTV Movie Awards, including a live video stream from the event and its after-parties.
The app has personalisation features to let people choose which news categories they're interested in, and also create photo slideshows to share with friends.
"Extending the reach of the popular MTV News franchise into the app world provides our audience with an additional platform in which to consume our curated pop culture and music news content," says MTV.com's SVP and general manager Kristin Frank.

The iPad only went on sale outside the US on 28 May, but according to AdMob, it already has a big proportion of overseas users.
The mobile advertising firm says that according to its network stats, 38% of iPads accessing its network of ads in May were outside the US.
The biggest markets were Japan (5%), the UK (4%), China (4%) and Canada (3%), with three of those four getting a sharp boost in the number of iPad users over the weekend, once the device went on sale there.
China is the exception, yet according to AdMob's Mike Fyall, "we have seen consistently strong iPad usage in China since the device first launched".
AdMob tracked around 850,000 unique iPads during May.
The company has just launched its iPad SDK, allowing iPad developers to incorporate its ad units in their applications.

AT&T announced today that the iPhone will gain tethering, finally, at an extra $20 a month, but only for people on a new 2GB a month plan. They also quietly announced at the same time the real news — that the $30 Unlimited Data plan on the iPad 3G will be axed in lieu of the same data plan. Yes, this would be the same 'revolutionary data plan' that Steve Jobs was so proud of during the iPad unveiling — it lasted just a month after the 3G model was delayed to May 7. People feeling vibes of previous Apple iDevice releases are not alone. Existing accounts will be allowed to grandfather in, although Apple has removed the ability to purchase the iPad from the online store at this time, and AT&T has a history of changing its plans without warning. Finally, there is no word on what happens if you ever let your Unlimited plan lapse for a month at this time.

We can't say we expected Jobs to do a ton of talking about that little "lost" iPhone prototype during his interview at D8, but he was of course asked about it, and he did do some talking about it. While he started out with the expected "there's an ongoing investigation" statement, Jobs soon got on a bit of a roll, saying that "this is a story that's amazing" -- that "it's got theft, it's got buying stolen property, it's got extortion, I'm sure there's some sex in there... the whole thing is very colorful." No discussion of the device itself, of course, but we're sure we'll be hearing more about it soon enough.
Update: Well, it looks like Jobs couldn't quite let the issue rest there. Later on in the interview, Jobs said that he had gotten advice to just let it slide, that "you shouldn't go after a journalist just because they bought stolen property and tried to extort you" -- but he said he couldn't "change our core values and let it slide," that he'd "rather quit."

John Strand, the CEO of market analysts Strand Consult, has issued a lengthy statement criticising Apple and the media environment surrounding the iPhone.
Strand, whose company compared Apple users to Stockholm Syndrome sufferers, accused wide segments of the media of behaving like “a ventriloquists dummy”, advised an iPhone app developer that they’d have a better business model trying to sell coffee to Turkey and reported that his questions about the iPhone led to him accusations of being anti-American.
“I will never forget when the renown IT journalist Walter Mossberg from the Wall Street Journal accused me of being anti-American during the Mobile World Congress a couple of years ago, because I was critical about the importance of the iPhone to operators,” recounted Strand.
“Everyone who reads this column knows that the man is an Apple fanatic, but to claim that someone is anti-American, because they view a mobile telephone’s sales figures from a global perspective really shows how Apple fanatics react.”

Hoping to understand what a new generation of mobile malware could resemble, security researchers will demonstrate a malicious 'rootkit' program they've written for Google's Android phone next month at the Defcon hacking conference in Las Vegas. Once it's installed on the Android phone, the rootkit can be activated via a phone call or SMS message, giving attackers a stealthy and hard-to-detect tool for siphoning data from the phone or misdirecting the user. 'You call the phone, the phone doesn't ring, and when the phone realizes that it's being called by an attacker's phone number, it sends him back a shell [program],' said Christian Papathanasiou, a security consultant with Chicago's Trustwave, the company that did the research.

The iPad launched in the UK last week, and just days later Apple was trumpeting 2m devices sold worldwide.
It was a great week for Jobs and the team, but just the beginning of a long and dramatic tale for the revolutionary tablet.
Having tracked iPhone for the last 30 months, we at ME know to expect the unexpected when it comes to Apple.
But having said that, some of the key moments in the iPad story will be utterly predictable.
Here are a few educated guesses of coming events and headlines – in chronological order:
* Britain goes iPad crazy. Fights break out between anxious mums in PC World
* Microsoft says WinPad iPad killer is in development
* 'iPad saved my life' – boy uses Medical App to perform kidney transplant on stricken mother
* 'Ban killer iPad' – heroic lifesaving boy bashes baby sister over head with iPad
* Hilarious clip of boy bashing baby sister over head with iPad becomes runaway YouTube hit
* Steve Jobs proclaims porn-free iPad
* Hustler.com proclaims arrival of 'hot, wet virgins' on site optimised for iPad Safari browser
* Microsoft WinPad still in development
* iPad 2 launches with camera and improved OS. Product is available across thousands of stores, but web designers with rucksacks still queue for hours outside Apple store.
* Early adopting iPad 2 buyers dismiss iPad 1 as 'utter piece of shit'
* Google launches Nexus Pad tablet running Android
* Apple sues Google
* Google sues Apple
* Microsoft WinPad still in development
* First movie to feature iPad product placement is a terrifying thriller about web designers
* Daily Mail starts campaign for iPads to ship with free stands after epidemic of back injuries. Petition handed to Regent Street store manager by weeping boy in neck brace.
* Muggers urge iPad owners to take their devices with them when they go out. "It's not helping us at all that people just tweet with them in front of the telly. How are we supposed to nick them from people's living rooms? We're muggers, not burglars for God's sake," says a spokesman
* iPad 3 launches
* Early adopting iPad 3 buyers dismiss iPad 2 as 'beneath contempt'
* Microsoft WinPad coming soon
* Steve Jobs announces plan to develop iPad 'C5' car
* Apple files for bankruptcy

iPhone developer Tapulous has now sold more than five million songs through the in-game music store for its Tap Tap Revenge games. What's more, every week the store's featured track - which is made available for free - is racking up more than 500,000 downloads from players.
The news comes as Tapulous announces a licensing deal with major label Warner Music Group to make four new premium games based on its artists in the next year.
The companies aren't saying which artists, just that the games will include a mixture of hits, remixes, live tracks and rarities.
However, Tapulous will also launch a dedicated WMG channel in its Tap Tap Revenge store, selling tracks from the label's catalogue.
"With Tapulous' exciting family of games, we're adding yet another compelling content experience and offering our artists a unique and powerful platform for engaging with fans around the world," says Mark Pinkus, SVP of worldwide licensing at Rhino Entertainment, which handles WMG's catalogue activities.
Tapulous says it now has 30 million users, with its games installed by more than 30 per cent of iPhone and iPod touch users. That huge community will help it to promote the WMG premium games as they are released in the next 12 months.

The latest title from Martin de Ronde's One Big Game charity organisation has been announced - WINtA (War Is Not the Answer) - a music rhythm game for the iPad and iPhone platforms.
The game is a collaboration between NanaOn-Sha's Masaya Matsuura and Dutch developer Triangle Studios, and was demonstrated on-stage in a keynote session at this year's NLGD Festival of Games event taking place in Utrecht.
Price points and release dates haven't yet been announced, but a significant amount of sales revenue will go to a selection of children's charities.
WINtA is the second One Big Game title to be revealed, with Zoe Mode's Chime being the first release late in 2009.

Gizmodo is reporting that Apple has refused to answer its request to attend the company's big Worldwide Developers Conference keynote this Monday. Apple's move to ban Gizmodo seems a direct repercussion of Apple's prototype leak by Gizmodo and subsequent actions of Apple to get the prototype back. Meanwhile, Gizmodo said that it would resort to a live blog to cover the event in case of the ban. This comes a few days after San Mateo County authorities announced that a 'special master' had been appointed to assist in the search of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's belongings: goods seized as part of a police investigation into the disappearance (and Gizmodo acquisition) of one of Apple's prototype iPhones. It's the very device that's rumored to be announced at the Monday keynote.

If you don't know the names yongzh and ZodTTD, you can certainly be forgiven, but they're basically the cell phone emulation dream team -- where the former has been cranking out high-quality Nintendo and Sega emulators for Android, the latter is the one who brought PSX to iPhone, iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre. Today, we hear they're collaborating on a PSX emulator for Android that's running faster than the 3GS version -- before Froyo's even factored into the equation -- and that when his domination over the PSX is complete, ZodTTD intends to begin work on an Nintendo 64 emulator for Android, and then VLC. Without letting our enthusiasm get the better of us, let's just say it's an exciting time to be an Android owner, to say the least.

Today, you can answer the Call of Duty once again, on the device you use to answer most other calls. Activision has announced that the popular Call of Duty: World at War Zombies iPhone game now has a sequel available -- sort of.
The "Shi no Numa" content pack for the original Zombies game is being billed as the sequel, although it's also DLC for the original. If you already have Zombies, you can add the new content, including the "Zombie Swamp" location, to your existing game, for $4.99. It's available as a standalone app for $9.99, for some reason, as well.

The Terms of Use section of Wired Magazine's first iPad app offer clues to additional features that will be included in future issues.
They include paid subscriptions; sweepstakes and contests; the ability for readers to post comments, photos, and videos; third-party companies selling products and services through the app; and in-app online auctions.
I spent a bit of time yesterday reading the app from cover to cover (or whatever the iPad app equivalent is), including the Terms of Use at the end. There's some intriguing stuff:
1. Wired may get people to register their details in the future. "Service Provider may at all times require that you register and/or set up an account to use certain portions of the App, or the App as a whole."
In a later privacy section, it says this: "For instance, if you enter a sweepstakes or contest, complete a survey, make a purchase, subscribe to our publication(s), or register for any portion of our services..."
The Terms of Use also say that unless otherwise specified, "Service Provider may sell or share personally identifying information with our affiliates and with carefully selected companies who we think can offer you services and products of interest to you." Don't want this to happen? You have to write to Wired at its street address. Can't this sort of thing be handled with a checkbox at the time of registration?
2. The magazine may be planning to sell content and services. "Service Provider or third parties may charge you fees for products or services offered for sale through the App, and/or for access to portions of the App or the App as a whole."
It goes on to specifically mention credit, debit and charge card payments - hinting at an annual subscription perhaps. However, a separate section later on refers to merchandise, products and/or services sold by third parties through the app too.
3. Social features are clearly on the way, with the Rules of Usage section referring to posting "graphics, text, photographs, images, video, audio..." - it can't be spam advertising, defamatory or offensive or sexually explicit. "Do not engage in 'cyber-sex' (i.e. virtual or simulated sex) or solicit another to participate in 'cyber-sex' on or through the App" is one amusing clause. Chat-rooms? Users are also warned not to post content that will infringe copyright laws.
4. Another section focuses specifically on "comments, opinions, or statements posted on forums, blogs or otherwise contained in the App". Oh, and incidentally any text, graphics, photos, images, video and audio files posted by users of the app grant Wired a "royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive, unrestricted, worldwide license" to use, modify and distribute - among other verbs - including users' identities. Par for the course for UGC?
5. Could Wired do a deal with eBay? Here's the relevant section: "We may at times offer auctions on the App; should we do so, we may use third-party service provider(s) to administer the auctions..."
I'm naturally cautious of taking sentences out of a Terms of Use document and saying that they offer a clear roadmap of future features. Wired could just as likely be keeping its options open.
However, the sections highlighted above do give a sense of where Wired's app may be heading.

The contest is open to all developers, who can enter any app not currently in the iTunes App Store.
Winners will get a publishing deal with all the monetisation promise offered by Teletext, which has access to AND sister publications such as Metro, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Jobsite.co.uk, FIndaproperty, Motors.co.uk and Teletext Holidays.
The combined potential audience is 40 million people.
There's already been one winner after soft launch in April. That was MirrorMe, which uses facial recognition software and medical research to show what a person will look like in the future, depending on different lifestyles.
The App Factor competition deadline is the first Monday of each month. The next deadline is 5th July 2010.
Richard Titus, CEO of AND, said: “Since the launch of their first apps almost 90 days ago, Teletext Mobile has had almost 600,000 app downloads.
"It’s a great start and I’m sure that with our strong product pipeline, Teletext Mobile will soon achieve its aim to be the biggest mobile publisher in the UK and potentially Europe.”

Heralded as the biggest leap since the original iPhone with over a hundred new features, the iPhone 4 was unveiled to huge cheers at this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco.
Powered by Apple’s A4 processor, the device is 24 per cent thinner than the iPhone 3GS – making it the thinnest smart phone on the market. It features front and rear facing cameras with an LED flash, a gyroscope as well as the accelerometer, and a micro-SIM slot. Design-wise, it features squared lines and steel edging that serves as an antenna, compatible with Bluetooth, wi-fi, GPS, UMTS and GSM.
The demonstration heavily emphasised the new Retinal Display, so named for having 326 pixels per inch, whereas the human eye can process up to 300 pixels per inch. It features a 960 x 640 display on a 3.5-inch screen, with a 800:1 contrast ratio that is four times better that the iPhone 3GS, and IPS technology for better colour and a wide viewing angle.
Jobs also revealed that the iPad would receive an update later this month, allowing users to view PDF’s, and discussed the App Store’s support for the HTML 5 platform and its approval process, highlighting the reasons for rejection – the app doesn’t do what the developer said it would, the use of private API’s and stability.
A number of other industry faces also joined Jobs onstage. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced the release of Netflix for iPad and iPhone, Mark Pincus, CEO of Zygna, revealed that the hit game ‘Farmville’ will be coming to the iPhone from the end of June, and Activision senior vice president Karthik Bala demonstrated an iPhone version of Guitar Hero.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today revealed that the iPhone app market has since its birth grossed $1.43 billion in revenues worldwide.
And, since Apple takes a thirty per cent cut on all App Store item sales, Jobs stated that the thousands of iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad developers have together made $1 billion in sales.
Speaking at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Jobs told attendees that the App Store “crossed 5 billion downloads” as recently as last week.
Both statistics arriving at the same time offers an interesting, though somewhat rudimentary, calculation: Based on Apple’s stats, each download on the App Store – including the ones that are free – represent revenues of 20c each to developers.
That figure is no doubt intoxicated from the reams of free content available on the App Store, yet it puts a contrasting perspective to what Jobs said on stage in San Francisco today:
“This next thing is my favourite stat of the whole show,” he said in front of a gigantic screen, resplendent with, presumably, PowerPoint slides.
“You know we give 70 per cent of revenue to developers. So how much have we paid? To date? Just a few days ago we crossed $1b.”

Foxconn, the China-based company which manufactures iPhones and iPads, has announced that it is to raise the wages of workers at its Shenzhen plant - for the second time in a week.
The company has been plagued by reports of worker depression, with 10 employees from that facility in 2010 alone committing suicide. While Apple boss Steve Jobs rejects criticisms of poor working conditions at the factory, Foxconn has increased the basic salary by 30 per cent, with a new conditional 70 per cent hike also now set for October.
"While overtime work was always voluntary, this wage increase will reduce overtime work as a personal necessity," read a statement, according to the BBC.
Assembly line workers were initially offered a 20 per cent increase from Ұ900 ($132) per month, but this was changed to 30 per cent last week.
Now, the firm is offering to up that to Ұ2000 ($293) per month for employees that pass a 3-month performance test.
The rise is specific to the Shenzhen factory, although workers at Foxconn's other locations will also see wages increase from the beginning of July.
But Jobs - who has overseen a new wave of Apple market presence occur with the release of the iPhone, and now iPad - was impressed with the facility.
"You go in this place and it's a factory but, my gosh, they've got restaurants and movie theatres and hospitals and swimming pools. For a factory, it's pretty nice," he told a conference audience last week. "Foxconn is not a sweatshop."

Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 4 after a couple wild, unprecedented months of leaks. Sure, it looks exactly like we expected it to (Steve compares it to an old Leica camera), with a glass front and back, but it's what's on the inside that counts, kids. The stainless steel band that goes around the phone is an antenna system, while also providing the main structure of the phone, though it's plugged into the same old GSM / UMTS radio you all know and love -- there's a reason they didn't call it the iPhone 4G. There's also of course that front facing camera we were all anticipating, a rear camera with LED flash, and a new high resolution display that doubles the pixels in each direction (960 x 640) for a 4X overall pixel count increase -- Apple calls it a "Retina Display." It's rated at 326ppi, which Apple claims is beyond the human eye's limit of distinction. Check out an example of the new screen up against the iPhone 3G after the break. Similar to the iPad, it's an IPS display, offering 800:1 contrast. Naturally, it's still the same old 3.5-inch size. Under the hood is the A4 processor that runs the iPad. Despite the new engine (and the 25% thinner chassis), Apple managed to make the battery slightly larger, and the new handset is rated at 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music. Oh, and that WiFi? It's 802.11n now. The camera has been bumped to 5 megapixels, with 5X digital zoom and a "backside illuminated sensor," which now can also record HD video at 720p / 30fps.
On the software front, applications will automatically get high resolution text and buttons as part of iOS 4 (the OS previously known as iPhone OS 4), and with "a little bit of work" developers can make their entire app compatible with the new resolution display. Developers will also get access to a new gyroscope, giving devs "six axis" motion control between the gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass, with a new "Core Motion" API to deal with it all. Users won't be left out in the cold, however: they can mess around with that new HD video using a brand new iMovie app, if they shell out $4.99 for it. If anyone's feeling particularly frisky, iOS 4 even lets you switch your default search provider to Bing. Last but certainly not least, that new front camera is enabled for video chat using the new "FaceTime" feature. It's a WiFi-only (for now) video calling feature that works from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 with "no setup" involved, and can flip over to the rear camera if your grandparents get tired of your face.
The phone will be available in white or black, retailing at $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for 32GB. They go on sale June 24th, and AT&T will be giving some extra grace upgrade timing -- up to six months early. The 3GS will be dropped to $99 and the 3G will disappear completely. Pre-orders start in a week, with 5 countries at launch (US, France, Germany, UK, Japan), with 18 more following in July. Apple will also be selling a first party case for $29, and a dock for the same price.

We've already seen the iPhone 3GS drop to under a $100 at Walmart, and Apple has now expectedly made that the official price point following the announcement of the iPhone 4. What's more, the 3GS will now only be available in an 8GB version (it's still not clear if both colors will be available or not), and that naturally also means that the iPhone 3G is now officially discontinued. Of course, there's also still quite a few of the current iPhone 3GS models floating around out there, and AT&T will be doing its best to clear those out -- you can now grab a 16GB 3GS for $149, and a 32GB 3GS for $199 on a two-year plan "while supplies last."

We knew it had to happen eventually -- iPhone OS has been renamed to iOS with the bump to version 4. Some 1500 new features are coming along with the name change, including biggies like multitasking, a unified inbox, app folders, and data detectors. Although Apple is encouraging devs to tweak their apps for the iPhone 4's new Retina Display, iOS4 will also automatically redraw text and controls for existing apps to make them play nice with the new higher pixel density. Bing search integration has also been added to iOS 4 in addition to Google and Yahoo -- Google is still the default, though. The golden master is available to devs today, and Steve says the 100 millionth iOS device -- that's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad -- will be sold sometime this month. That's a lot of devices! We found out about most of the features of iOS 4 at the SDK event, so check here for the full rundown.
Apple says iOS 4 will arrive for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and the iPod touch on June 21 -- and it'll be free to iPod touch owners for the first time, which is nice. Not all features will be supported across all devices: the first-gen touch is left out entirely, and the 3G won't do multitasking, as we heard at the SDK event. We'll see if there are any other limitations and let you know.
Amusingly, an iOS trademark is currently owned by Cisco -- just like the original iPhone trademark -- so we'll see if Apple's lawyers actually called ahead this time around or if they'll have to fake-tussle and make nice again.

You knew it was bound to happen sooner or later -- Farmville is heading for the iPhone. But that's not all, Activision was also on hand at WWDC to announce an iPhone version of Guitar Hero, which packs classic rock from the likes of Queen and The Rolling Stones, and is available in the App Store today for $2.99. Check out a shot of it after the break, and look for Farmville to be available by the end of June -- or don't, it's up to you.

In a shocking announcement that absolutely no one expected -- oh, who are we kidding? Apple CEO Steve Jobs just officially debuted the iPhone 4 at WWDC 2010 in San Francisco. While anyone with internet access has probably already seen the thing, we now know some of the new specs -- plus a date and pricing. June 24 for the iPhone 4 in white or black, 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $299, with a contract, of course. AT&T is extending the special pricing to any subscriber whose contract is up in 2010. Pre-orders for the iPhone 4 will open June 15.
The first major gaming-related feature revealed today: what Apple is calling a "Retina Display." No, it doesn't scan your retina -- it's Apple's jargon for the iPhone 4's screen having four times the pixel density as the iPhone 3GS, or 326 pixels-per-inch. That's also 78 percent of the pixel resolution of the iPad's display. Jobs said that existing apps and games will instantly look better, but can be optimized for the screen.
We'll continue updating this post as more is announced.
Update: The handset is powered by Apple's own A4 processor, the same used by the iPad. In addition to GPS, a compass and accelerometers, the iPhone 4G is adding a gyroscope, providing full pitch/roll/yaw sensing in 3D space. "We've tied the gyro, accelerometer, and GPS for 6-axis motion sensing. It's perfect for gaming - and one of the reasons it's perfect is because it's built into every iPhone 4, so you know it's there," Jobs explained. He demoed the functionality with a Jenga type game.

After two months of burning up the iPad, Netflix is ready to devour its latest platform: the iPhone. Just like the iPad app -- where it reigns as the number one downloaded entertainment app, Netflix will have you know -- it's free, and you can pick up your playback from the last spot, as with all Netflix players. Unlike the iPad, the UI actually looks fairly optimized for the platform, including an app-optimized search of your instant queue. It also features "seamless" switching between networks, with 3G streaming apparently a go. It launches this summer.

Apple has just announced that the iPad has collected 22 percent of ebook sales since its launch and is about to get new features too. A PDF viewer is going to be thrown into the iBooks app later this month, and will be accompanied by new bookmarking and note-taking functionality. Yeah, they're basic enhancements at best, but we're still trying to wrap our minds around this idea that Apple is already responsible for nearly a quarter of all ebook sales. Then again, as Steve points out, a cool five million of the darn things have been downloaded in the first 65 days of the iPad's availability.
Update: Seems like even five mill ain't gonna be enough for Apple, which is set to massively expand its iBooks user base by bringing the app to iPhone and iPod touch users. You'll be getting the same note-taking, same bookmarking -- same everything -- just on a smaller screen, and at no extra charge. Users will be able to purchase a book on one device and then consume it across the full range of iDevices, with bookmarks and progress getting synced across the ether.

Apple has revealed the iPhone 4 at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Franscico, with the new handheld featuring a built-in three-axis gyro and a significantly increased pixel resolution.
The iPhone 4 has six-axis motion sensing with pitch and roll "making it perfect for gaming," according to Apple, which can be accessed using the new CoreMotion API. The display has been upped to four times the iPhone 3GS to 960 x 640, with the 326 pixels per inch increasing the resolution of text, images and video.
It features a five megapixel camera with LED flash and a front mounted camera, HD video recording and the FaceTime app used for video calls over WiFi.
The iPhone 4 comes with iOS 4, the new name for the iPhone operating system, which Apple claims will boast over 100 new features including multitasking and Apple's new iAd mobile advertising platform.
The handset will be available in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan on June 24, with a North American price of $199 on a two year contract for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model.
"iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone," said Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple. "FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page. We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades."
The company also announced a new iPhone 3GS 8GB model to retail at $99.

Take-Two has just confirmed that it will release a version of GTA: Chinatown Wars specifically for iPad "later this month".
The game originally released on DS, taking the GTA series back to its top-down roots with gameplay similar to the PlayStation 1 originals.
The game was later released on the iTunes Apps Store for iPhone and iPod Touch. Take-Two divulged no details on the iPad version, but with the bigger screen and a considerably beefier CPU in Apple's tablet device, you can expect touched up visuals at the very least.

Apple and Google's newfound rivalry in the mobile advertising space was already pretty interesting to watch as it stood, and it looks like things just got more interesting still. As expected following Steve Jobs' comments at D8 last week, Apple has now revised its rules on advertising in iOS to allow outside advertisers to collect stats for ads, but the company has included some language in the new rules that seems to effectively cut out Google's AdMob. While it obviously doesn't mention Google by name, only "independent" advertising providers can collect tracking stats, and Apple says that any "advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent." That would seem to not only affect AdMob, but Adobe and Greystripe's just-announced effort as well, considering it specifically mentions companies affiliated with "development environments other than Apple." We told you things would get interesting.

Google and Nokia have both launched free turn-by-turn navigation apps: Google Maps Navigation and Ovi Maps respectively. Now iPhone has its own equivalent, although it's not made by Apple.
German firm Skobbler has released its Skobbler Navigation app, which like the apps above is completely free.
The app uses OpenStreetMap as the source of its mapping data, enabling it to cut costs. Before that, the app sold more than 150,000 downloads on the App Store in Germany.
Google and Nokia's decisions to launch free navigatioon were a rock in the pond of GSP navigation, but up to now, iPhone has tended to attract satnav apps with premium price points.
Skobbler Navigation could pick up steam quickly, then, if it delivers a decent experience for users.

Of the many things that buyers might need to know about the new iPhone; Raymond Soneira — president of DisplayMate Technolgies — added one more to the list. Raymond Soneira challenged Apple's claims that Apple's new iPhone contains a so-called 'retina display.' According to Soneira the the resolution of the retina is in angular measure, 50 cycles per degree, whereas a cycle is a line pair which is two pixels, so the angular resolution of the eye is 0.6 arc minutes per pixel. So, if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes that works out to 477 pixels per inch and at 8 inches it's 716 ppi. You have to hold iPhone 4 out about 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi. So the iPhone has significantly lower resolution than the retina.

e've already heard rumors of Hulu coming to the iPad and Xbox 360, and rumors of a subscription service, and it looks like those might now all be coming together. According to Reuters, two sources and "another with knowledge of the matter" say that Hulu will be rolling out to "multiple devices" in the next month or two -- only the iPad and Xbox 360 are mentioned by name -- and that it will indeed be offering a subscription service. As we had heard, the subscription service would apparently only be for older episodes of TV shows and other content -- you'd still be able to watch new episodes of shows for free -- and it sounds like it will apply to Hulu as a whole, not just those aforementioned devices. Not many more details that that, unfortunately, but this does certainly seem to be taking on a feeling of inevitability.

Not every Apple addict is lucky enough to own an iPad, iPhone and the means to jailbreak both, but if you belong to that elite group you're in for a treat: SNES HD for iPad. Built on ZodTTD's existing iPhone emulator, the new code has Super Mario World looking positively fantastic at the iPad's 768p. Better still, it works with the ControlPad app for iPhone, giving you look-alike wireless controls alongside the nostalgia of its ROM select screen. "Coming soon" to Cydia; see it in action after the break.

News/release from Hooka
Hey guys, decided I'd drop you a beta of a port of RACE! the Neo Geo Pocket Color emulator.
You can find it here!
There are a few quirks with it atm, but in general I'm quite happy to say it seems fairly stable.
Roms go in sd://pandora/appdata/race
In the menu, use A to select a rom, B takes you to the options menu, but it isn't setup to actually do anything yet and even mentions the PSP still...
load/save states aren't implemented atm (sorry, I had it working on GP2X, but then realized it only worked with the C z80 core, not Dr.Z80, so I gotta fix that up first) BUT normal saves seem to work as of hotfix 2.
In game, X is the NGPC's A button and B is B (due to placement being closer to NGPC's)
I used a simple 3X scaling for the resolution, hope you're ok with that, before the screen was about the size of a stamp on the pandora's screen
Umm, dunno what else I was gonna say... Really all the credit should go to Flavor, Thor and Judge, it's their piece of awesome...
I'll probably wait to see if I can get a slightly fixed up version with a readme and such setup before trying to upload it to the archive or pandora apps website (damn it, just call it the app box or some other clever little thing relating to the mythology already )

An iPad stuffed inside an iBook not your cup of tea? Then perhaps this Macintosh Classic mod will be better suited to your more discerning, old school tastes. As you might expect, there's not a lot involved in this one -- just some gutted internals and an opening on the side that lets you slip in an iPad, which magically fits just where the old CRT used to be. Head on past the break for the video, and hit up the source link below for a peek at some of the possibilities offered by the mod.

This real-life clash of the titans could be much more interesting than the movie. Today Google fired the latest volley in its war of words with Apple over mobile advertising. In a blog posting, the head of Google's mobile ad service, Admob, had harsh words for Apple's new restrictions concerning the iPhone and iPad ... calling them a threat to competition. There's a lot of money at stake ... the US mobile ad market, which is about $600 million, is expected to more than double by 2013.

Daily Tech reports that in what is one of the biggest leaks of email addresses in recent history, a group called Goatse Security has published the personal email addresses of 114,067 iPad 3G purchasers in what appears to be a legal fashion by querying a public interface that AT&T accidentally left exposed. Apparently AT&T left a script on its public website, which when handed an ICC-ID would respond back with the email address of the subscriber. This apparently was intended for an AJAX-style response inside AT&T's web apps. Gawker reports that it's possible that confidential information about every iPad 3G owner in the US has been exposed. 'This is going to hurt the telecommunications company's already poor image with iPhone and iPad customers, and complicate its very profitable relationship with Apple,' writes Ryan Tate, adding that the leak is likely to unnerve customers thinking of buying iPads that connect to AT&T's cellular network. 'Although the security vulnerability was confined to AT&T servers, Apple bears responsibility for ensuring the privacy of its users, who must provide the company with their email addresses to activate their iPads.' In a statement, AT&T says that the issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and that it has essentially turned off the feature that provided the email addresses. 'We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose email addresses and ICC IDS may have been obtained,' says AT&T. The FBI has opened an investigation into a security breach that exposed the contact details of some iPad owners.
A vulnerability in US network operator AT&T's website exposed iPad users' email addresses, before the security flaw was fixed on Tuesday.
"The FBI is aware of these possible computer intrusions and has opened an investigation," FBI spokeswoman Katherine Schweit told the Wall Street Journal, adding that the investigation began on Thursday and was in its early stages.
Apple has apparently refused to comment on the security breach.
Earlier this week a hacker group called Goatse Security claimed it had succeeded in acquiring 114,000 email addresses through the security hole, including those of a number of executives from firms including Dow Jones, Conde Nast, Time Warner, HBO and the US military’s research division, Darpa.

On Wednesday, at the Executives Club of Chicago, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha reportedly decided to chat about the relatively near future of the mobile landscape as he sees it — which, in part, includes the ultimate demise of mobile computers in favor of highly-capable smartphones. This being his vision, Jha discussed Motorola's plans for a smartphone with a 2GHz processor — by the end of this year. While Jha did not want to divulge any further information, Conceivably Tech cites another anonymous Motorola executive who was a little more chatty, talking up a device intended to 'incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today.

So, there's two ways to look at this. One would be to gawk at the fact that ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports broadcasting, is using iPads and Xbox 360 consoles -- common devices that are widely available to mere mortals -- to drive content to millions of consumers. Another would be to gawk at the fact that ESPN has somehow managed to keep its finger on the pulse of innovation, despite being swallowed by Disney and being a part of one of the planet's most monolithic corporations. Thankfully for you, we're going to cover both angles here. Our eyes were opened after stepping foot in the company's Bristol headquarters and really getting a feel for how the company views technology and its integration into programming, and it led us to a philosophical conclusion about how corporations should (but oftentimes aren't) be taking advantage of what's readily available.

Australian iPad buyers have been forced to buy all manner of unnecessary add-ons including screen protectors, docking stations, covers, chargers and extended warranties due to a reported Official Apple policy. Shoppers reported sales assistants said it was 'company policy' or 'Apple policy' to sell the devices only with accessories, or not at all. A store manager for Authorised Apple Reseller JB Hi-Fi said it was 'a bad policy but it was Apple's policy and they couldn't sell one without it.' Other customers were told they must 'buy a Telstra SIM because the iPad is locked to Telstra,' even though it wasn't. The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission and Consumer affairs are investigating the complaints.

Square also have two other digital games, both for iPhone, that they plan to reveal at E3, but they aren’t saying anything about them until then. Considering they’ve saved them up for E3, we’re hoping at least one of them is going to be as big a deal as, say, Chaos Rings, which is one of Square’s more high-profile iPhone projects to date.

Whether you're bored, cheap or in desperate need of a new on-the-go gaming addiction (perhaps for that long flight out to the west coast for a major electronic entertainment convention?), you'll want to hop on the App Store with all available haste to take advantage of a pretty wicked offer. For this weekend only, the first two installments in the pseudo-episodic iPhone version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords have been rolled into one totally free package.
The third (and final) chapter of the game is still selling at its usual retail price of $1.99, but we wouldn't worry too much about that. It's not like you'll be compelled to get that far in the game because it's super, super addictive or anything.

Speaking to Develop, Monkey Island co-desinger Tim Schafer has suggested that Double Fine may in the future look to create iPhone titles. More that that, said the studio's founder, the firm is hoping to try 'everything'.
"Some of the recent downloadable games have managed to retain their big-game production values, and I think that is really interesting," enthused Schafer when asked about the iPhone.
"Just because you want to play a short game, doesn’t mean you want to play a cheap-looking game. I think there is a big future in small, beautiful, well crafted games. I can see Double Fine making all kinds of games. Give us enough time and we’ll try everything."
Develop Conference speaker Schafer, who created Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and more recently Brütal Legend, also revealed his enthusiasm for Natal, which is now known as Kinect.
"I am usually more excited by creative ideas on the design side, and when it comes to tech like new controllers I take more of a ‘wait and see’ approach. Except I am very excited about Natal. I think if Natal is a success, it could open video games up to a whole new market. And possibly cause me to lose 30 pounds.

The US International Trade has opened an investigation into whether Apple has infringed on HTC’s technology, as the smartphone rivals continue their legal wrangling over hardware and software patents.
HTC is looking to secure a ban on the US importation and sale of the iPhone, iPad and iPod, just days after Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPhone 4.
According to the ITC’s statement, the case concerns devices that “utilize certain power management methods and may incorporate hardware and software for telephone directories within mobile telephone systems.”
“We are taking this action against Apple to protect our intellectual property, our industry partners, and most importantly our customers that use HTC phones,” Jason Mackenzie, HTC’s vice president of North America, said when the firm filed its lawsuit in May.
HTC submitted a complaint to the ITC last month after Apple launched a lawsuit against the Taiwanese firm in March for allegedly infringing on 20 patents related to the iPhone's “user interface, underlying architecture and hardware”.
Apple is also being sued in a separate case by Elan Microelectronics, which is demanding that the ITC bans Apple from importing or selling the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, MacBook or Magic Mouse in the US. According to the firm, these devices’ multi-touch enabled touchpads or touchscreens infringe its patent.

Most UK retailers think the iPad could experience the same popularity as the iPhone, a PCR survey has found.
The study, conducted by Infinite Field Marketing on behalf of PCR, asked 250 stores: “Will the iPad be as successful as the iPhone?” 72 per cent said yes, 28 per cent didn’t know, but no-one said no.
The research comes just weeks before the iPhone 4 is due to hit UK stores.
Earlier this month, Steve Jobs claimed Apple sells one iPad every three seconds. “So far, I’d have to say that people seem to be liking iPads,” the CEO said.

Vodafone's 360 app store will be embedded on the two devices, giving users a choice of destinations for their apps (the other being Android Market) and developers two outlets for both native products and cross platform JIL apps .
The operator is confident its store can give partners a better result because of what it claims is the richer retailing experience offered by 360.
The store has a personalisation engine (powered by Xiam), for example, which provides recommendations based on user behaviour.
Vodafone says its analytics show that four times more customers buy on the basis of recommendation than on promotion.
The operator also believes the simplified operator billed buying process and the bringing together of music, graphics, ringtones, ebooks, video and other 'entertainment' products on the store will make it a stickier site for end-users.
Lee Epting, director of content at Vodafone's Internet Services, told ME this move is all about giving developers more reach.
"Until now, Android developers have only had Android Market through which to reach end users. We're giving them another option, but with a much better retail experience," she said.
Initially, the launch will cover Sony Ericsson X10 Mini and HTC Buzz only, and will be live from later in the summer.
It should be stressed that Vodafone announced in February that its 'People' app would be downloadable to Android phones. Clearly, this is a much more serious tilt at the Google platform.
The move reflects a general desire by Vodafone to move 360 in the direction of 'horizontals' rather than 'verticals'.
In English, this means an effort to put components of the service (which include an enhanced address book, an app shop, a music service and the 'My Web' portal) across multiple devices and platforms – rather than piling them all into one '360' phone (such as the much maligned Samsung H1 and M1).
Of course, Vodafone 360 has received a colossal kicking since launch last September, not least for screwing up the email and syncing functionality at launch.
Epting was candid enough to admit to errors. "We thought we were ready. We'd tested and tested... but launching a 24/7 internet services on top of a network is extremely complex and it needs to work seamlessly. We found that our test cases didn't cover enough...But we fixed that, and the response from users has been excellent."
The criticism hasn't abated. But Epting maintains that 360 is winning consumers over, claiming that ARPU for the service's users is three times higher than for regular Vodafone Live users, and that 88 per cent of 360 customers are new to data services.
However, she still wouldn't give an overall number for total 360 users.

We already knew that Apple was likely ratcheting up the social networking integration in iOS 4 -- that is, if the addition of Linked Contacts and .plist entries referring to Facebook means anything (and it probably does). Adding further flame to the fire, the gang at 9to5Mac.com have dug up a bit of code that appears to handle video exporting to the popular social networking site. As near as we can tell, users will be able to send files at 480 x 480, 30 FPS -- and since Facebook is already using HTML5, you won't have that pesky Steve Jobs / Flash thing to worry about.

The popular rumor going around right now at the eleventh hour is that AT&T will only be offering the black iPhone 4 models for pre-order tomorrow and at launch, with their white counterparts coming "later this Summer." Considering the fact that the white version of the 4 is quite a bit more distinctive than the 3G / 3GS, that's a bummer if true -- but what we don't know is whether this is strictly limited to AT&T. It's entirely possible that Apple and third-party retailers will be offering the white models, and AT&T's own distribution channel might just be suffering from some sort of buffoonery (that's our hope, anyhow). Lending credence to the rumor is the fact that Japan's SoftBank has already officially announced that it'll only be offering the black models initially -- and when we pressed AT&T on the matter, we got "no comment" in return. It's not looking good, folks.

Look up at the sky -- is it falling? It sure seems as if that kind of doom is imminent, at least if this whole iPhone 4 pre-order situation is any indication of future tragedy. We've received hundreds of tips this morning from friends near and far that iPhone 4 pre-orders aren't going through, though a few of us here on staff were able to get a confirmation during the wee hours of the morning. From AT&T in the US to O2 over in the UK, it seems that just about everyone ambling to get their name on a future iPhone 4 is experiencing a great deal of frustration. AT&T's servers seem to be completely hosed here in America, and since Apple's own online order process has to ping those to check on your contract status, neither option is... um, working. Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees aren't even able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed, and no one seems to exactly know when things will be back to normal. And you thought the most enraging part of this was the inability to select a white model. Let us know how your experience has been in the poll and comments below, won't you?

Ah, here we go, Samsung's other cellphone with an integrated projector just got an official launch date. The Galaxy Beam (codename: Halo) with its 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display is now slated to hit Singapore in July. That means that the European and broader launch across Asia should be just around the corner if Samsung's claims from Feburary hold true. At launch, the world's first Android phone with a built-in DLP pico projector will be served version 2.1 of Google's confectionary delight. Specwise, we're talking 7.2Mbps HSPA data on 900/1900/2100MHz and quad-band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with flash (front-facing VGA) and HD video recording, A-GPS, FM Radio, and an 1,800mAH battery. Memory is confusingly listed as "4Gb + 2Gb + 1Gb + 16Gb MoviNAND" made worse by no mention of microSD though it was definitely there when we went hands-on with Beam at Mobile World Congress. Specs after the break.

While much of Apple's focus in recent months has been on its mobile efforts, with the iPad and iPhone 4 lapping up all the media attention, it hasn't forgotten about its Mac business after all – despite internet claims to the contrary.
The firm has today launched a new version of the Mac Mini – a small form factor desktop machine which packs double the graphical power for the last model, thanks to a NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor.
The chassis measures 7.7 inches square and 1.4 inches thin, and Apple claims it is the most energy efficient desktop available.
“The sleek, aluminium Mac mini packs great features, versatility and value into an elegant, amazingly compact design,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing. “With twice the graphics performance, HDMI support and industry-leading energy efficiency, customers are going to love the new Mac mini.”
Prices for the new Mac Mini start at Ł649, with various bundles available for an extra cost.

You know that tiny little security snafu that allowed over a hundred thousand iPad users' email addresses out? The one that the FBI felt compelled to investigate? Well, Goatse Security -- the group that discovered that particular hole (stop laughing) -- isn't best pleased to be described as malicious by AT&T's response to the matter, and has requited with its own missive to the world. Letting us know that the breach in question took "a single hour of labor," the GS crew argues that AT&T is glossing over the fact it neglected to address the threat promptly and is using the hackers' (supposedly altruistic) efforts at identifying bugs as a scapegoat.
As illustration, they remind us that the iPad is still wide open to hijacking thanks to a bug in the mobile version of Safari. Identified back in March, this exploit allows hackers to jack in via unprotected ports, and although it was fixed on the desktop that same month, the mobile browser remains delicately poised for a backdoor entry -- should malevolent forces decide to utilize it. This casts quite the unfavorable light on Apple as well, with both corporations seemingly failing to communicate problematic news with their users in a timely manner.

Orange UK has published pricing and tariffs for the iPhone 4, in advance of the handset's release next week.
Customers will be able to get the 16GB iPhone 4 for free, but only if they sign up for a Ł75-a-month contract. The price then rises as the tariffs reduce, up to Ł169 on a Ł30-a-month tariff.
The 32GB model will cost Ł29 on the Ł75 tariff, rising to Ł269 on the Ł30 plan. In both cases, the handset price is more expensive on an 18-month contract.
Orange may court controversy with its decision to describe mobile internet browsing as "unlimited*" on its tariff chart.
Why the asterisk? Because a fair use limit of 750MB a month applies to both Wi-Fi and mobile internet browsing.
Not unlimited, in other words. That's not a surprise or particularly outrageous, but we sense it may be time for operators to give up the ghost (and the asterisks) and stop using the 'unlimited' word when it comes to data.
Orange will also sell the iPhone 4 on a pay-as-you-go basis: Ł480 for the 16GB model and Ł570 for the 32GB model. That's 19 quid less than Apple is selling the unlocked version of the handset in both cases.

Apple has sold more than 600,000 iPhone 4 units in just one day of pre-orders, the largest number the firm has ever seen in a single day.
According to Apple, demand for the new smartphone caused some technical errors with its ordering system, which led to disappointment for some customers.
In a statement, Apple said: “Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.”
The UK Apple Store website is now showing a delivery date of 2nd July – almost a week later than the official launch date of 24th June.

Finally, some hardware hacking on an iPad. Finding the 3G connection that came with the iPad lacking, this industrious hacker yanked it out and replaced it with the guts from a MiFi. At the cost of his GPS, he’s gained a better connection and is now a wifi hotspot. It wasn’t horribly complex, but he did have to do a tiny bit more than just plug and play.

With the iPad unicorn now slain, what other beast can DigiTimes shackle its rumor mongering machine to? How about Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology (and inspiration for the ASUS company name) galloping forth with promises of a CDMA iPhone. According to the Taiwanese rumor rag, Pegatron (ASUStek's OEM manufacturing arm) will begin shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 from its Shanghai plants to Apple in Q4. Right, just in time for the holiday shopping season and perfectly alligned with Apple's annual September iPod event... you know, should Apple want to announce a deal with Verizon.

Apple has traditionally been -- how shall we put it -- cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone's RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We've heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple's keeping up with the times. Wouldn't wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?

We're delighted to see that Android has built yet more momentum behind Eclair since its last platform version distribution report two weeks ago, moving the mark from 45.1 to an even 50 percent of all devices in the field (that doesn't include 2.0 or 2.0.1, which have been swiftly banished from relevance now that all 2.0 devices have received 2.1 updates). Unfortunately, Cupcake and Donut -- versions 1.5 and 1.6, respectively -- simply refuse to die, together accounting for basically all of the remaining half. That's down a little under 5 percent from the beginning of June, though, so at least we're moving in the right direction -- and a couple well-placed OTAs from HTC, Motorola, and Samsung would obliterate most of the remainder, we figure. Version fragmentation is an enemy of this platform, regardless of what Google says -- so let's just fast-track a bunch of Froyo ROMs and put all this talk behind us, alright?

It looks like iTunes 9.2 has just hit the Software Update screens of computers across the land, and if you've got an iPhone 4 on order, this is one you'll want to get around to installing in the next few days -- it's the only way you'll be able to sync (actually, you'll want it if you're using iOS 4 on any manner of iPhone). Major features include iBooks support on the iPhone and iPod touch, PDF syncing through iBooks, home screen folder organization, and "faster backups" with iOS 4-equipped devices -- a promising sign for anyone troubled by long sync times. Follow the break for Apple's full rundown.

Stoobalou writes with a story that got started earlier this month when iPhone users in the US and the UK noticed that their phones seemed to be sending large data bursts via 3G overnight. (Providers are ending unlimited contracts, so iPhone users are paying more attention to how much data they are using.) The discussions began on MacOSRumors and an Apple discussion forum. Thinq.co.uk makes this guess as to what is going on, but doesn't offer much in the way of substantiation:
"The simple fact of the matter is — as far as we can tell — that the iPhone's push notifications and other small transfers of data are totted up throughout the day and the total for all of those notifications is added up after dark and sent to your airtime provider while your phone is sleeping. If these tiny amounts of data were individually listed your bill would probably be the size of a telephone directory. The reason it is using the 3G network rather than Wi-Fi is that all iPhones up to and including the 3Gs turn off Wi-Fi push functionality while the phone is in sleep mode, in order to preserve battery life. The iPhone 4, incidentally, has better power management so will not need to do this."

Sussex police are creating a number of iPhone apps for the public, including one to renew your gun license. Unsurprisingly, the plan has some anti-gun groups upset. Lyn Costello, of Mothers Against Murder and Aggression (MAMAA), said, "This isn't suitable, especially in light of what happened in Cumbria. We've got to be extra careful giving gun licenses. We have this attitude that gun murders don't happen very often so it's OK to be lax, but it is not OK and we've got to do everything in our power to stop it happening again. We can't put money before life and if you start to do that we are losing our humanity. It is a really stupid idea.''

Hey, they say beauty's in the eye of the beholder, but we're going to go out on a limb here and call this one like we see it: NEC's LifeTouch Android tablet isn't a looker, in our opinion. That said, this 7-incher runs Android 2.1 and packs an ARM Cortex A8 processor. Although it's scheduled for release in Japan in October, it turns out that it'll be sold directly to businesses, so don't hope to grab up one of these -- unless you have the best employer ever, that is. Hey, at least it's original looking.

[Tony Million] used a standard SIM to reduce the monthly cost of using broadband on the iPad. This is the exact opposite of using the iPad SIM in an iPhone and requires that you cut down your standard SIM quite a lot. [Tony] did this because he imported his iPad to the UK from the United States and using AT&T wasn’t an option for him. [Thanks David]

The Toshiba AC100 looks like a standard netbook, albeit a particularly swish and sleek netbook, but it's more (and less) than that.
However the AC100 offers modest hardware specs such as a 1GHz ARM CPU and 8GB flash storage but by leveraging Google’s lightweight Linux-based operating system with NVIDIA’s cutting-edge Tegra 250 hardware, Toshiba claims the AC100 will run for up to eight hours and stand-by mode for seven days.
Equipped with a 10.1-inch TruBrite screen with LED backlight, the AC100 features a standard and mini USB ports, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and an HDMI port for video output. There’s also an SD/MMC card reader and a 1.3MP webcam. Toshiba also talks up some interesting software features such as location-based home screens which switch automatically featuring the user’s customised widgets and applications. 3G connectivity is also set to be an option when the unit goes on sale in August.
With a raft of iPad competing Android-powered tablets on the horizon, the full-keyboard approach evokes memories of earlier light notebooks such as the original Psion Netbook circa 1999. The concept was interesting idea first time around but was firmly ahead of its time, offering limited functionality and a cost near full-sized laptops. However in the intervening years the communications and web browsing capabilities of lightweight operating systems has become virtually indistinguishable from a desktop computer.
Armed with a large screen and a full-sized keyboard but with the mobile-style sub-second boot times, long battery life and fuss-free mobile-style software installation via the Android Marketplace, this new category could well be attractive to consumers. That said the ‘full fat’ netbook market is a competitive category and Toshiba hasn’t yet announced pricing for the AC100.

In 2008 we discussed Swype, which allows a mobile (phone, e.g.) user to draw a path over a virtual keyboard to enter words, rather than requiring precise tapping to accomplish the input. Using this software, a Swype intern (Franklin Page) beat the Guinness record by about 6 WPM for the Guinness-standard phrase: The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human. (Unfortunately the video at that link is marked private.) TechCrunch reports that Swype is presently in open beta, and will be available for 'a couple of days,' supporting English, Spanish, and Italian entry. Finally, while the deadline has apparently passed, I was able to retrieve the Android beta for testing a few minutes ago. I'm posting it here for the benefit of Android-enabled Slashdot readers.

In a behind-the-scenes look at Windows Phone 7 (photos), CNET's Ina Fried notes that Microsoft's new software has won early praise for breaking ground in some areas, but takes a step backward in others. In particular, it doesn't support features like copy and paste and multitasking that were already part of the old Windows Mobile. 'I think users use cut-copy-paste periodically,' said Microsoft exec Terry Myerson, '(but) there's other things they use more frequently.' Hey, tradeoffs had to be made — it was either copy-and-paste or Goo Splat

It's not just multitasking apps that are hitting the App Store to coincide with the release of iOS 4.0 -- Apple has also just rolled out version 1.1 of its iBooks app, which is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch in addition to the iPad (officially, this time). As previously announced, the app now also supports PDF viewing, and boasts a range of other more minor improvements, including new ways to bookmark (complete with syncing across devices), your choice of white or sepia colored pages, more font options and, of course, "greater stability and better performance."

Although iOS 4 is out now with 1500 new APIs including multitasking support, your apps won't support all those new features out of the gate -- they'll need to be updated to take full advantage of the iPhone's new tricks. Happily, Apple started accepting iOS 4-ready apps last week, so there's a handful of interesting apps already available, and we're sure more are on the way. Here's a quick list of what you can check out right now -- we'll be updating this as we go, so check back for more!
Dropbox: Everyone's favorite file-syncing tool can now sync and complete uploads in the background, and also adds in support for fast app switching.
Evernote: the notes-in-the-cloud app adds support for fast app switching, and can continue to record audio notes in the background.
Pandora: Yes, you can finally play Pandora in the background -- and the quick music controls on the left-most panel of the app switcher even control playback when it's in the background. Nifty.
New York Times: Nothing major, but the Gray Lady supports fast app switching, so you can jump right back into an article without reloading.
ESPN ScoreCenter: Supports fast app switching, although you'll still have to open it up for scores to refresh, since there's no background updating API.
How to Cook Everything: Funny that a cookbook is one of the first iOS4 apps out there, but we're Mark Bittman fans, so this is pretty cool -- it supports fast app switching, so you don't have to reload a recipe every time you close the app. Oh, and it's got newer high-res art for the iPhone 4. Tasty.
Fandango: Now has fast app switching, so you can juggle other tasks while buying your movie tickets.
LinkedIn: Yep, LinkedIn's iPhone app adds fast app switching to the mix.
So those are some highlights -- we'll keep updating as we go here, but most of the early iOS 4-ready apps are just adding fast app switching. We won't lie, once you see it in action, you'll wonder how you lived without it, but we're still waiting to see developers get wild on those 1499 other new APIs -- let us know what you're seeing out there!

Nokia appears to have run into trouble with its recent MiniMO contest, which got UK students to shoot movies using their phones, with a trip to the Cannes Advertising festival as a prize.
The contest included a Critic's Choice award, judged by ShootingPeople.org creative director James Mullighan. It went to a film called Forrest Chump by Jemma Lyon.
However, the award has sparked anger on web community b3ta, due to that film's similarity to a film called Forrest Gump in One Minute, in One Take, which has been available on YouTube since February 2009.
"Someone's sent me an entry to a Nokia filmmaking competition that's literally a shot for shot, line for line, idea for idea remake of it," writes the outraged co-creator of the original film.
"I wouldn't mind except the person who entered it has won a "Critics Choice" award out of this rehash, including a ****ING TRIP TO CANNES."
On its official Twitter feed, Nokia has said that neither Nokia nor Mullighan was aware of the original YouTube video, and that "The Critic's Choice Award will be unchanged as winner is already in Cannes".
Update: Meanwhile, Nokia's Mark Hindle has also commented on this story, saying that Nokia is investigating the alleged plagiarism.
Chalk this down as a useful lesson in the perils of user generated content. Meanwhile, the controversy doesn't end there, with commenters on Nokia's blog post announcing the winners of other MiniMO awards criticising the actions taken to fight vote-rigging.

Farhood sends in this snip from the LA Times:
"In an updated version of its privacy policy, the company added a paragraph noting that once users agree, Apple and unspecified 'partners and licensees' may collect and store user location data. When users attempt to download apps or media from the iTunes store, they are prompted to agree to the new terms and conditions. Until they agree, they cannot download anything through the store. The company says the data is anonymous and does not personally identify users. Analysts have shown, however, that large, specific data sets can be used to identify people based on behavior patterns."
Mashable and The Consumerist have picked up on this collection and sharing of "precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device."

Apple has announced that over three million iPads have been sold around the world.
The tablet went on sale 80 days ago in the US. That's the same amount of time it took Phileas Fogg to balloon around the world.
The iPad launched in the UK on 28th May.
"People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives," said Apple's Steve Jobs.
"We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month."

The thinking all along was that there'd be an allocation of unreserved iPhone 4s in AT&T stores this Thursday for customers who didn't bother to (or couldn't) pre-order the phone ahead of time, but not so much. Turns out that the extra stock won't be arriving until June 29, at which point it'll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online. Of course, this is strictly an AT&T announcement -- Apple Stores and Best Buys are still possibilities -- but basically, there's no point in lining up on the 24th at your local AT&T shop unless you've got confirmation that a reserved phone is available for you. Follow the break for AT&T's full statement.

Considering Google's typically feverish pace in deploying new Android builds, we'll admit -- we kind of expected Android 2.2 Froyo to be released to retail Nexus Ones by now... but no dice. So, where is it? The company hasn't committed to a firm date for a global roll-out yet, but there's official word from an Android employee over on the Nexus One's support forums this week that FRF72 is not the final update and that a release "will only happen once a release candidate meets [their] quality criteria." Korean versions of the phone were pegged to launch with 2.2 this week, so any way you slice it, it can't be long now.

Aw, suki suki now! Looks like we've got our first iPhone 4 delivery here in the US, a full 24 hours before the first batch is supposed to land. The best news isn't that throngs of pre-orderers are seeing their units "out for delivery" today, but that this Mac Rumors user was able to activate his unit already in seamless fashion. 'Course, we highly doubt it'll be so easy for everyone else crashing the servers tomorrow and Thursday, but there it is. So, anyone else seeing their iPhone 4 marked as "out for delivery?" Or better still, "in hand?" Give us a shout in comments below.

With Monday's iOS 4 upgrade, Apple patched a record 65 vulnerabilities in the iPhone, more than half of them critical. However, the first-generation iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the much newer iPad, may have been left vulnerable to some or all of the 65 bugs. iOS 4 cannot be installed on 2007's iPhone and iPod Touch, and the upgrade is not slated to reach iPad owners until this fall. The bug count is a record for the iPhone, surpassing the previous high mark of 46 vulnerabilities patched last summer with iPhone OS 3.0. Formerly known as iPhone OS 4, iOS 4 included 35 bugs, or 54% of the total, that were tagged with the phrase 'arbitrary code execution.' It's unclear how many, if any, of the vulnerabilities affect Apple's iPad. The media tablet runs an interim version of the operating system, dubbed iPhone 3.2, that followed the February iPhone 3.1.3 security update. It's possible that some of the bugs patched Monday were fixed by Apple before it launched the iPad in early April. But according to the Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures database, it's likely that many of the flaws fixed on Monday still exist in 3.2."

"InfoWorld's Galen Gruman investigates what businesses can expect from Apple's new iOS 4. Multitasking, the biggest new capability, is for now simply a promise, as apps will need to be retrofitted to make use of the capability. The other big new capability for IT, a set of APIs that allow BlackBerry-like management of the iPhone, such as auditing of policies and apps, over-the-air provisioning of apps without iTunes, and over-the-air configuration and policy management, also remains in the realm of promise, as the various mobile management tools that have been reworked to take advantage of the new iOS 4 capabilities won't be available until July or later. And despite the fact that email works more as it does on the desktop, iOS 4 still fails to deliver several email capabilities key to business users, including zipped attachment management, junk mail filtering, message rules, and message flagging."

iPad Scrabble playable on your iPhone? Pretty neat. Desktop Asteroids playable on your Android smartphone? Rather more action-packed -- and a little less expensive to get into. Androideroids is a project of Grant Skinner and runs on Adobe's Air platform. It's an eight-player game hosted on a desktop, with each participant given a first-person smartphone view of the vast expanses of space and the hollow rocks scattered throughout it. Meanwhile, a desktop client displays an overhead perspective of the shenanigans, displaying everyone's life and score. Players can either shoot asteroids or each other, tapping on the screen to thrust and fire while tilting to turn. Honestly the move to first-person doesn't seem to have done anything to improve gameplay, but this is still one game of Asteroids we'd make room for in our games folder.

Remember that chart that pointed out the differences between Google, Apple and Microsoft? Well, it's looking increasingly like Google is intent on filling any and all gaps in its portfolio. Those good old unnamed sources have been talking, originally to CNET last week and to the Wall Street Journal today, and disclosing Google's supposed intent to introduce its very own music store. This would initially encompass a web store where you can stream or download tracks, with a search tie-in that'll get your money into Google's pocket in the fastest possible way. Subsequent plans are said to include Android integration in 2011 -- something that Google rather nonchalantly demoed at its I/O conference last month. Of course, none of this is as yet confirmed, but it looks like Apple and Google will be competing across yet another front -- hold on tight.

While iOS 4 is delivering on every promise for the iPhone 3GS users out there, as we were all told up front, the iPhone 3G would be missing some of those touted new features. Granted, we knew such disparities would exist but were never given the finer details. Now that the final build is percolating through the internet, we decided to take a look at what features are and aren't working on the earlier year's model.
What's there
Folders
Threaded mail
iTunes playlist creation / editing
5x digital zoom: just tap on the display near the capture button, but be warned, it doesn't paint a pretty picture
iBooks: we were having issues with the earlier build, but it seems to be running fine after today's official download -- PDFs work, too.
Photos: you can now sort by albums, events, faces, and places
Game Center: the icon is present, but as of this writing we're unable to connect to the servers. (Update: a number of readers saying it didn't come with today's download. We nabbed ours as a gold build, which might explain the discrepancy despite still being considered "up to date" by iTunes.)
Spell check has been updated
Spotlight search: you can search the web and Wikipedia from the home screen search bar. That said, not all our queries -- "Engadget," for example -- weren't offering the option. [Thanks, jkane08]
What isn't
Multitasking: this is the big one. Double-tapping the home button doesn't give you the handy menu, there's no fast app switching, and background use is missing in action.
Screen lock: normally in the multitasking menu (which isn't available on 3G), it's nowhere to be found, even under Settings. Bummer.
Home screen wallpaper: you'd think this simple addition would make the cut, but sadly no. The dock has been given a visual upgrade, though.
Bluetooth Keyboard support: we haven't tried this ourselves, but an influx of reports from Twitter suggest this is also a no-go.

A new study suggests that Americans spent $168 million on mobile virtual goods in 2009, with over 70 million Americans - 23 per cent of the population - now owning some kind of smartphone.
Research firm Frank N. Magid Associates and mobile social gaming network OpenFeint created the Magid Media Futures 2010 Wireless and Consumers study to examine the specifics of the mobile virtual goods market in the US.
They found that 45 per cent of smartphone owners play mobile games and 16 per cent of those spend an average of $41 per year on in-game virtual goods.
A total of 55 per cent of smartphone gamers expressed an interest in buying virtual goods, with the largest demographic being men between the age of 18 and 34.
Smartphone gamers were found to download an average of 14 games per year, paying for four games on average and obtaining the rest for free. Application store reviews and word of mouth proved to be the most influential factors on downloading a game.
"Everybody knows free-to-play social gaming models on PC platforms have been making a killing, but mobile virtual goods aren't as well understood," said Mike Vorhaus, president of Magid Advisors.
"With almost 20 per cent of smartphone gamers already making purchases, there's a lot of room for the market to keep taking off as smartphones continue to increase in popularity," he added.

CNET is reporting that a fifth of Android apps expose private data. The Android market threat report details the security issues uncovered. Dozens of apps were found to have the same type of access to sensitive information as known spyware does, including access to the content of e-mail and text messages, phone call information, and device location. 5% of the apps were found to have the ability to make calls, and 2% can send text messages, without the mobile user doing anything.

It's still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it's worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code's been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance's satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers. It's still ultimately up to a bunch of gatekeepers in suits to decide when various models will get the upgrade, but this is basically zero day -- so let the countdown begin.

Well, it looks like you can put those conspiracy theories to rest... or can you? Apple has just put out an official statement on the nowhere to be found white iPhone 4, which it now says will not be available until the "second half of July." What's the holdup? Apparently, the white models have "proven more challenging to manufacture than expected" -- but don't worry, Apple assures us that "availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected."

The upcoming special edition of Monkey Island 2 will finally allow players to control hero Guybrush with the analogue stick.
Last summer's Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition mapped points to A and clicks to B, but still went on to earn 9/10 on Eurogamer.
IGN, spotting the difference, also noted that alongside the three-tiered hint system is an L1-mapped helper that highlights objects you can interact with. R2, meanwhile, produces a radial menu of the actions that best suit an object rather than the whole lot.
What's more, Monkey Island 2: Special Edition can overlay new voice-overs on the original game in Classic Mode. And there's the option to turn them off altogether if you so wish.
Commentary from developers Tim Schafer, Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman will be accessible (prompted) at certain points throughout the adventure, and there are various concept art unlocks that await your eye.
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition will be released 7th July on Mac, PC, PSN and XBLA. iPhone and iPad conversions are expected later this summer.
Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition currently costs 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live. Snap it up.

EA has slashed the price of a number of iPhone games for a temporary summer sale.
The EA Mobile site has the price in dollars, but your regional App Store should narrow that down for you.
In the UK, FIFA World Cup, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Need for Speed Shift, SimCity, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, FIFA 10 and Need for Speed Undercover are all 59 pence. They're all in the top 10 'paid apps' list as well.
The US EA site says this sale "ends soon". We can't find a more concrete finishing time on iTunes or the UK EA site. Please let us know below if you can.

You always knew that Google Maps had 'em -- schedule a trip on public transit and the app would tell you exactly when the next few trains or buses would arrive (or, at least, were supposed to arrive). But, getting to the full schedules yourself was never possible. Now it is, with Google Maps getting an update to allow you to tap on bus or train stations and retrieve a listing of which lines will pass through and when, making it a little easier to identify a proper last call that won't see you springing for an expensive taxi ride. Beyond that, Google has re-organized the information about restaurants and other businesses, and will also suggest friends who are sharing their whereabouts on Latitude. That last bit is helpful if their last call was a little later than yours and they're now too inebriated to tell you where to find them.

The official Twitter app is keeping up with the times by rolling out iOS 4 support in its latest build. With the program now able to run in the background, you'll finally be able to send tweets while switching in and out of other applications. It also means you won't have to relaunch the app every time you want to check up on the latest happenings, it'll just keep your place like a good and loyal piece of software. Retina Display-friendly graphics are also part of the new package, along with "more secure" tweeting, if you ever felt insecure about the integrity of you shorthand missives. All it's missing now are the millions of "sent from my iPhone 4" messages, a gap we're sure you'll be filling pronto.

ou waited patiently for the Dev-Team to pull together all the developer betas and now it's time for your reward: PwnageTool 4.0 has been released. The latest hack from team jailbreak works with previously jailbroken iPhone 3GS devices with the old bootrom, all iPhone 3G models, and yes, the second generation iPod touch too. It doesn't work with the original iPhone and other iPod touch models and, as always, there are plenty of caveats and bold print warnings to heed. But if you manage to weave your way into a jailbroken device (as we did with our iOS 4 iPhone 3G using redsn0w) then the latest copy of ultrasn0w will now unlock all basebands released since 04.26.08, including the updated version found in iOS 4. So get cracking kids, and remember, buckle up, back up, and be safe.
Update: 4.01 has already been released to fix an iBook issue.

iFixit traveled all the way to Japan to bring you this iPhone 4 teardown, only to be shipped the device unexpectedly two days early!
We were surprised that the A4 processor (its naked body displayed for the world this past April) contained within the iPhone 4 had 512MB of ram, compared to the 256MB of the iPad. Other features include the 1420mAh battery (201mAh more than the 3Gs), 5MP rear camera and front VGA camera, and the use of micro-sim.
Frankly, we don’t see ourselves getting the device immediately, but how excited are you for the iPhone 4?

Hot on the heels of the major Apple iPhone operating system release, Google has released an update of the Android operating system.
The new Android 2.2, code named Froyo in the now familiar desert-themed naming scheme, has begun rolling out as an automatic update to owners of the company’s own Nexus One phone.
Google has also made available the source code to partners with third party handset manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung and Motorola expected to also follow with the updated OS.
Many have been able to run the new Android operating system ahead of the official release with many positive reports of a substantial boost in speed thanks to the inclusion of a JIT complier which the company claims speeds up application execution between 200 to 500%. This might make Apple a little uncomfortable given the widespread reports of the iOS4 update resulting in sluggish iPhone 3G handsets.
Android 2.2 is also notable for delivering the capability to run Adobe’s Flash in the new web browser which provides additional functionality on the web through interactive flash applications video streaming and so on.
The new OS brings features and improvements such as a better on-screen keyboard, improved enterprise-class features for business and the ability to ‘tether’ the phone to a computer so it piggy back off the phone’s 3G data connection either via USB or a personal Wi-Fi hotspot.
Google has also revealed that is activating 160,000 Android handsets per day. The figures are particularly startling given that the rate was 100,000 in May, which represents a 60 per cent boost in take up even in the run up to the launch of the iPhone 4. Many put the success down to the wide variety of cutting edge handsets available from a range of manufacturers at different budget points.
In recent months the pace of third party support for Android has gathered with major phone launches such as the Samsung Galaxy S with the much-vaunted Super AMOLED display and yesterday’s Motorola Droid X launch in the US. The Droid X and Samsung Galaxy S also launched with the new Swype keyboard gesture input system.
Speaking in an interview with the Guardian, Schmidt said, “We have seen a tremendous increase in adoption. We've also seen a growth in the number of apps available for Android – there are now approximately 65,000 compared to only 50,000 a month ago."
He believes that means Android could have reached the volume necessary to become an essential mobile operating system – and perhaps the equivalent of Windows on PCs.
Schmidt wouldn’t be drawn on whether Google would look to producing its own Android-powered tablet to go head to head with the iPad, like the firm did with the Nexus One handset.
The open nature of Android will, however, mean that a great many handsets will be left waiting to see the OS improvements causing further fragmentation of versions of Android handsets on the market. Google claimed that this situation is improving and that major revisions of Android are expected to slow after Android 2.2.

Barclaycard's Waterslide Extreme was the first branded iPhone app to pass 10 million downloads on the App Store earlier this year. Now it's got a sequel.
The game is called Rollercoaster Extreme, and like its predecessor, it's free and is the work of agency Dare and developer Fishlabs.
As the name implies, this time rollercoasters are the theme: the game is set in New York, and ties in with Barclaycard's latest TV advertising campaign.
"With the iPhone game Waterslide Extreme, we were able to realise our famous Waterslide campaign on television, the web, YouTube, and on mobile platforms, and thus create a buzz for our brand among our target group on every screen," says Barclaycard's Hannah Dean.
"It made sense to use this approach again with our partners Dare and FISHLABS for our new roller coaster campaign."
What's more, there's an update on Waterslide Extreme: the game has now generated more than 14 million downloads on the App Store.
"In our opinion, Rollercoaster Extreme has what it takes to beat that success," says Fishlabs CEO Michael Schade.

Greystripe has announced that it's updated its iPhone advertising SDK over the air, to ensure it works properly with Apple's new iOS 4 software.
That means developers using Greystripe's ad units won't have to tweak their apps to continue running the ads under the new OS version.
Greystripe is trumpeting the over-the-air nature of the update, claiming it means developers won't need to resubmit their apps for approval.
That's slightly misleading though: developers ARE resubmitting their apps anyway, either to show they've been tested with iOS 4, or because they're using its new multi-tasking features.
However, Greystripe is also claiming that its SDK is fully compliant with Apple's changed terms and conditions for developers.
"Any developers negatively affected by Apple’s new OS or the change in the developer terms and conditions should contact Greystripe," says VP of strategy and publisher development Erica Chriss.
"Our easy to integrate SDK can have your apps ad-enabled in a matter of hours."

It's fair to say there are plenty of vuvuzela haters out there. Dutch developer Moblio.nl certainly isn't one of them though.
The company is currently making tens of thousands of dollars a week from its Vuvuzela 2010 app for iPhone and iPad, according to AdMob, whose ad units the developer is using.
The app is free, and since its release has held top spot in the App Store's Top Free Apps chart in the UK, Germany, France, South Africa, Argentina, Japan and Australia, while going top-three in the US.
"the company is now earning several tens of thousands dollars per week via its share of advertising revenue," says AdMob's head of marketing EMEA Matt Brocklehurst.
"We've helped monetise their inventory in over 100 countries worldwide. As of today, the Vuvuzela 2010 app has been downloaded over 3.5 million times, and has experienced explosive growth across the world."
The feat is all the more impressive because there are dozens of other vuvuzela apps available on Apple's App Store. It seems that taking the free ad-supported approach has made Moblio's effort the champion.

The iPhone 4 arrived in the UK this morning, with customers queuing from the early hours to be in with a chance of laying their hands on one.
Apple’s latest smartphone went on sale from 7am today, by which point BBC News reports that hundreds were waiting outside Apple’s flagship Regent Street store – some for 24 hours.
PCR was at the O2 store in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, at 9am, where dozens stood in line. Orange, which is also offering the iPhone 4, by comparison did not have a single person waiting outside its nearby shop.
Apple is selling sim-free iPhone 4 handsets from Ł499 for 16GB or Ł599 for 32GB. The new device is slimmer and lighter than its predecessor.
The firm announced yesterday that white models of the new device will not be available until late July.

Social gaming giant Zynga has released the iPhone version of its hugely popular Farmville Facebook game. The game went live on the App Store this morning, to accompany the release of the new iPhone 4 handset. It was unveiled earlier this month by Zynga CEO Mark Pincus, during Apple's WWDC keynote.
The farming game has been a phenomenon on Facebook, signing up more than 75 million players. 200 million virtual gifts are sent by its players every day, and the game has racked up more than 100 billion page views in the last year.
Zynga is hoping to translate that success to mobile devices, starting with the iphone and iPod touch.
As on Facebook, the iPhone version is free to play, but runs on a virtual items business model: iOS players can pay Ł2.99 for 7,500 in-game coins, which can then be spent on items.
iPhone games developers are following Zynga's launch closely: Apple has placed restrictions in the past on developers using its in-app payments to get players to buy virtual currencies.

Square-Enix has announced that Final Fantasy Tactics will hit the App store on September 15.
Square-Enix has had a shakey history with Final Fantasy spin-offs, but thankfully Tactics is one of the better ones.
The iPhone and iPod Touch release of the game will be a version of the PSP re-release Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions.
Square-Enix seems to be quite taken with the iPhone, as it's previously released Final Fantasy 1 and 2, Crystal Defenders and an original RPG called Chaos Rings.

We're starting to hear a few reports of the dreaded yellow spots disappearing from the iPhone 4's display after a day or so of use. Interestingly, someone posting on the AppleInsider forums seems to know why:
Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow "blotches" will disappear. How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple.
If this can be trusted, it's very good news for those afflicted -- though hopefully Apple will keep to its usually painless replacement policy for defective phones either way. We are still seeing some mentions of the spots sticking around, fading in and out based on the heat of the phone, but we'll give it another day or two to really see how much of a problem is going to be. Let us know how yours fares.

What's more annoying than spending hours lining up for a shiny new gadget? Learning that your precious phone can't actually connect to the network. Well, depending on how you hold it -- word has it that the iPhone 4's bottom-left corner isn't playing nice with your skin. If you recall from the keynote, that's where the Bluetooth / WiFi / GPS antenna meets its GSM / UMTS counterpart. So we decided to test on two brand new iPhone 4 handsets purchased today in the UK.
One iPhone 4 demonstrated the issue everytime it was held in our left hand (as a right-handed person is apt to do) so that our palm was essentially bridging the two antennas. You can see that in the video after the break. Bridging the two with a finger tip, however, didn't cause any issues with the reported reception. If we had to guess, we'd say that our conductive skin was acting to detune the antenna -- in fact, we've already managed to slowly kill two calls that way so it's not just an issue with the software erroneously reporting an incorrect signal strength. That said, we had no issues when Apple's $29 rubber bumper accessory (given to us free for standing in line) was attached, creating a buffer between our palm and the antennas. Our second UK-purchased iPhone 4 was fine, showing none of these handling symptoms. See the video evidence after the break including Insanely Great Mac's version which got us to worrying in the first place.

According to Liliputing, Intel is bringing the sweet eye candy of Android to x86, which — if all goes well — means it will land on (more) netbooks and tablets soon. I'm more excited about ARM-based tablets, for their current advantage in battery life, but the more the merrier, when it comes to breaking up the tight circle of OSes available for any given arbitrary class of computing devices. Given all the OS swings that the OLPC project has gone through, maybe they should be thinking of Android, too.

Unity Technologies has opened pre-orders for the Android version of its popular eponymous games engine - and there's an incentive for pre-orderers.
The first 500 customers who pre-order the software will receive a free Google Nexus One phone to test their creations on.
Unity Pro for Android was revealed last month at Google's I/O developer event. It features all the same features as its iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts.
“We firmly believe that the future of games lies in the web and mobile markets, and bringing Unity to Android gives our users easy access to a new and rapidly growing audience,” said Nicholas Francis, CCO of Unity Technologies.
"We're completely stoked that we managed to team up with Google so we can get a bunch of phones included with 500 pre-orders. We don’t know exactly what people will create - only that with the skills of our users, it's gonna rock.”
Unity Pro for Android features include an integrated editor, the ability to use your phone as an input device to test your game directly within the authoring tool, one-click deployment, and a highly optimised graphics pipeline for OpenGL ES 2.0.
Unity Pro for Android is an add-on license to Unity's existing Unity Pro, and is priced at at $1500 for existing Unity Pro customers and $2700 for new customers. A non-Pro version, Unity for Android, will be priced at $400 and available at a later date.

Apple has admitted that complaints of reception problems with the new iPhone 4 are an issue, with the issue being hardware rather than software related.
The main complaint of the new device, which launched earlier in the week, is that if the bottom-left hand corner of the phone is held reception can be impaired or even lost.
Apple's advice so far is to use a cover for the phone, to prevent physical contact with your hand, or simply to hold it differently.
"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas," suggests an official Apple statement obtained by website Engadget.
"Avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases," concludes the statement
In addition to the reception problems there have also been multiple reports of screen discoloration, although a post on the AppleInsider forums suggests this is a result of the bonding agent on the glass not fully evaporating. As such the issue is expected to resolve naturally after a period of days.

Google disclosed in a blog post on Thursday that it remotely removed two applications from Android phones that ran contrary to the terms of the Android Market. From the post: 'Recently, we became aware of two free applications built by a security researcher for research purposes. These applications intentionally misrepresented their purpose in order to encourage user downloads, but they were not designed to be used maliciously, and did not have permission to access private data — or system resources beyond permission.INTERNET. As the applications were practically useless, most users uninstalled the applications shortly after downloading them. After the researcher voluntarily removed these applications from Android Market, we decided, per the Android Market Terms of Service, to exercise our remote application removal feature on the remaining installed copies to complete the cleanup.' The blog post comes a day after security vendor SMobile Systems published a report saying that 20% of Android apps provide access to sensitive information."
Update: 06/25 16:44 GMT by S : Clarified last sentence, which incorrectly suggested that 20% of Android apps were malicious. According to the report (PDF, which we discussed recently), "a majority of these applications were developed with the best of intentions and the user data will likely not be compromised.

We'd heard earlier that ngmoco's new game Eliminate: Gun Range was one of the first apps to really take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope, and now that we've had a chance to play with it, we've got say there's a ton of potential here. E:GR is itself just a simple shooter, but the gyroscope adds what seems like nearly 1:1 motion control to the proceedings -- and since you're moving the display itself, it almost feels like augmented reality. It's hard to explain, since it's so unlike any mobile UI experience we've encountered before, but as soon as we tried it our brains pretty much exploded with possibilities -- we're thinking drastic improvements to actual augmented reality apps like Layar, all kinds of crazy flight simulator games, much more refined GPS apps, you name it.

So, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today... and it's a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone -- namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it's not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone's antenna. The company's suggested fix? Move your hand position, or get a case which covers that part of the phone, thus breaking contact. As you can see in the email above which just arrived in our tip box, this is a sentiment which runs pretty high at the company. Here's the official statement:
Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
We know what you're thinking, and we're thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn't a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 -- we've seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can't help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn't Apple just move the antenna position? What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can't recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer... all we're wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is heading to iPhone and iPod Touch on 15th September.
There's no price mentioned, but we're badgering Square Enix to find out.
War of the Lions was the subtitle given to the exemplary 2007 PSP remake of the original Final Fantasy Tactics game from 1997/8. Square Enix bettered its first effort in every way and went on to earn a whopping 9/10 here on Eurogamer.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions will gain unspecified new features for iPhone as well as the requisite touch-screen controls.

The remote-wipe capability that Google recently invoked to remove a harmless application from some Android phones isn't the only remote control feature that the company built into its mobile OS. It turns out that Android also includes a feature that enables Google to remotely install apps on users' phones as well. Jon Oberheide, the security researcher who developed the application that Google remotely removed from Android phones, noticed during his research that the Android OS includes a feature called INSTALL_ASSET that allows Google to remotely install applications on users' phones. 'I don't know what design decision they based that on. Maybe they just figured since they had the removal mechanism, it's easy to have the install mechanism too,' Oberheide said in an interview. 'I don't know if they've used it yet.

Reports of call and data signal strength problems in the new iPhone 4 have a basis in fact, a hardware expert said Thursday. Later in the day, Apple acknowledged that holding the iPhone 4 may result in a diminished signal that could make it difficult to make and maintain calls or retain a data connection. 'Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone,' Apple said in a statement issued to several media outlets, including PC Magazine, which had run tests earlier Thursday. 'If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.' Scores of new iPhone owners confirmed the reception problem in a string of more than 360 messages posted to a thread on Apple's iPhone 4 support forum."
A blog post from an antenna design company explains that the reception problems are probably the direct result of phone design adapting to FCC requirements.

The most Twitter-vocal iPhone Dev Team member, Mr. MuscleNerd himself, has just posted a screenshot from a jailbroken iPhone 4. Before you get too excited, however, you should know that this is just a preliminary "userland" jailbreak, which means it uses Apple software to happen, and it's not of a low enough level to really be worth releasing, since it's easy for Apple to patch. Instead it's an important step toward a real, low-level jailbreak that can actually be released. We'd feign pins and needles if this community wasn't so gosh darned amazing at hacking these phones: we're sure that real jailbreak will be along shortly.

Aaron Ardiri challenged himself to port his classic PalmOS version of Lemmings to the iPhone, Palm Pre, Mac and Windows. The porting was done using his own dev environment, which creates native C versions of the game. He liveblogged the whole thing, and finished after only 36 hours with an iPhone version and a Palm Pre version awaiting submission, and free versions for Windows and Mac available on his site.

Having arrived in a number of key global markets last Thursday, the first hackers to have jailbroken the iPhone 4 are already boasting online.
Jailbreaking is the term used for circumventing Apple’s software security measures. A jailbroken handset will run custom code and programmes that are not made by Apple or purchased legally over iTunes.
Most users who jailbreak their phones do so to either run illegal pirated software or programmes that are not officially sanctioned by Apple. These can include console emulators or can be feature-based. For instance, jailbroken iPhone 3G devices can be used to record video – something that Apple does not officially offer.
Now Pocket Gamer reports that the first hack is being described as “a preliminary userland”, meaning that it still relies on some of Apple’s official software and would be easily blocked were it to be released to the public.
However, it’s the first step towards a crack and don’t be surprised to see something being released online over the coming week or two.

Apple has sold 1.7 million units of iPhone 4 since it was launched on June 24th, with the company claiming the launch to be the most successful in its history.
Last week Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner predicted Apple could have sold 1.5 million units on launch day.
The official figure comes as no surprise - the iPhone 4 pre-order process was hampered by websites falling over and other bugs in the system. In the US and UK, the initial stocks available for pre-order were sold out.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. Even so, we apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”
The latest incarnation of the iPhone comes with iOS 4, offering multitasking, folders, enhanced mail, deeper enterprise support and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform.
It's not been a smooth launch by any means, however, with many customers complaining about poor signal reception when the device is held in a certain way.

iPhone games developer Lima Sky says that its Doodle Jump game has now sold more than five million downloads on the App Store.
It's the first paid game to reach that milestone, although free titles like Tap Tap Revenge and Paper Toss have gone way beyond it.
"We are thrilled to see how much Doodle Jump means to millions of Doodle Jumpers around the globe," says president and co-founder Igor Pusenjak.

Better late than never. Spotify has announced that it has submitted an updated version of its iPhone app for approval by Apple, including iOS 4 features.
Specifically, the app will use the new software's third-party multi-tasking capabilities, enabling it to play music in the background while users do other things on their devices.
iOS 4 was made available to consumers last Monday, and Spotify users have been wondering why the app couldn't multi-task since then.
In the US, music app Pandora had the feature ready for launch - unsurprising, given that the company's app was used to show off iOS 4's multi-tasking on-stage at WWDC, and before that at the iOS 4 unveiling.
For Spotify, supporting multi-tasking should boost usage of its app, while bringing it into line with the Android and Symbian versions.
"To make up for the extra little wait time we’ve added a nice little surprise to make Spotify mobile even more exciting for you," blogs the company's Andres Sehr. Users will have to wait for Apple's approval to find out what that is.

DJRumpy was one of several readers to point out rumors that Apple will soon be deploying an update to iOS 4 to combat the iPhone 4 antenna problems we discussed last week. This could be good news for users of the 1.7 million iPhone 4s purchased during the first three days of its release. (And no, Daily Mail, Steve didn't announce a recall, though there's speculation that this problem could be a boon for Android.) An anonymous reader notes an analysis of a teardown of the phone, which found that its parts collectively cost about $188, with the most expensive part — the LCD screen — costing $28.50 by itself. In other Apple news, Germany has demanded that the company "immediately make clear" what data it collects from customers, and what use it makes of that data (perhaps spurred by Google's Wi-Fi sniffing debacle).

We knew that Intel had designs on Android for its Moorestown CPU, and as you might have guessed, the company's plans don't stop there. Renee James, a Senior VP at Intel, recently said as much in a conversation with APC. Apparently, devs can look forward to seeing a fully native x86 version of Froyo at some point this summer. James goes on to say that "all of the code will be fed back into the open branch that will be created for x86." Awesome! Perhaps 2011 will see a yet another flood of generic, Atom-powered Android tablets. Because we don't see enough generic Android tablets as it is.

Nope, this isn't the first iPad mod you'll have seen, but it's likely to be the biggest crowd pleaser yet. Inspired by the iCade cabinet -- an April Fools' joke that had most of us asking where we could buy one -- this really real arcade cabinet integrates Apple's slate, hooks it up to a set of old school controls, and lets users go to town with such old timer classics as Mr. Do! It's still in prototype form, hence the boxy exterior, but the action on screen is looking as good as you'd expect.

If you own a Pre, you like to tempt fate, and you don't faint at the mere thought of your phone melting into a nondescript heap of plastic and silicon, have we got some exciting news for you: some crazy dude with a death wish has somehow eked an honest gigahertz out of the Pre's OMAP3430 processor that normally plods along at 600MHz. Of course, this isn't the first time the phone's been overclocked, but traditionally, those overclocks have topped out around 800MHz -- so if you need serious speed and don't mind nuking your battery at a record pace, this so-called "F105 Thunderchief" kernel project is one that you're going to want to keep an eye on. The project's owner says "do not install this if you like your phone," so... you know, proceed with extreme caution, especially considering that your warranty's probably going to dry up as fast as your battery.

Move over, Kobo -- following the promise of a Summer launch, Amazon's Kindle app for Android is now live, bringing the usual array of features that existing Kindle users will hold near and dear: access to the Kindle store right from the app, adjustable font sizes, free book samples, and most importantly, wireless bookmark synchronization with your entire stable of Kindle-equipped devices (because we know you've all got an iPad, iPhone, and physical Kindle lying around somewhere). The app requires Android 1.6 to operate, which is going to leave a few people in the lurch -- but it's always good to have a compelling reason to upgrade hardware, is it not?

Canadian band Nickelback is the latest artist to get the Tap Tap Revenge treatment, with their own branded music game for iPhone. Nickelback Revenge has been released by Tapulous, and includes 11 of the band's hits, including How You Remind Me and Rockstar.
As with previous Revenge games, there's a Bluetooth multiplayer mode, and four unlockable boss tracks to play.
"The combination of our music and Tapulous’ gameplay is very cool," says frontman Chad Kroeger. "We're excited to give our fans a fun, interactive way to experience our music."
There's a launch promotion for the game: the first 2,500 people to buy it will get 25 in-game credits that they can use to buy more music.
There will also be weekly prize draws for players who manage to beat the band's own high scores.
Laughing at the idea of a Nickelback game? Don't. The band may have their detractors, but they also have a big fanbase who'll be eager to shell out $4.99 for the game.
"Whether measured by album sales, song downloads or concert attendance, Nickelback is huge," says Tapulous VP of business development Tim O'Brien.
Previous artists to have got the Revenge treatment include Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Lady Gaga, Metallica, Kings of Leon, Justin Bieber and Nirvana.

A Californian law firm is investigating in to the reception problems with the new iPhone, with a possible class action.
According to Gawker, a firm called Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff is55 searching for people that have “recently purchased the new iPhone and have experienced poor reception quality, dropped calls and weak signals.”
There is evidence of the same issue within other phone models, so Apple is suggesting gripping the phone differently. However there is no model that has received the amount of public complaints as Apple has regarding the iPhone 4.
The fault is said to occur when the users hand covers the lower left corner of the phone, this is when the phone looses signal. This is supposed to occur by the iPhone 4’s stainless steel casing, which acts as an antenna that is covered when gripped in a certain way causing the loss of single.

Epic's Mark Rein has confirmed that the developer will experiment with micro-transcations and lower-priced titles, holding up platforms such as the iPad and iPhone as a major part of games' future.
Speaking as part of a panel concerning free versus paid games at GameHorizon in Gateshead, Rein was broadly part of the paid camp, but admitted that prices would have to fall.
"I'd rather sell 10 million games at $25 and have a chance to sell DLC than 5 million at $50 on a disc that gets traded around," he said. "I think it'll change, and it'll change for the benefit of the customers. We're definitely going to experiment with micro-transcations and lower-price games."
Rein did not believe that mobile and browser games necessarily meant free games, however. "I'm a big proponent of AAA games. Triple-A isn't going away, it's going everywhere. As the quality of the games go up, the cost of the games go up, you're going to have to monetise them better."
Demonstrating impressive Unreal engine prototypes running on iPhone, iPad and Android, he argued that such devices would soon offer hardware capabilities – and thus games - equivalent to that of an Xbox 360 or PS3, but that this would require increased consumer costs.
"These are the consoles of the future," he said, suggesting that if mobile phone power doubled even "even two more times, you can play Gears of War on this."
He also expressed interest in Apple's forthcoming iAds, and said "eventually" when queried as to when a Gears of War game would be download-only.
Also part of the panel was Jolt's Dylon Collins, who argued that the industry should be headed towards free games, Tenshi Venture's Ian Baverstock, who was convinced that prices must fall and that disc-based games would be left behind, and doublesix's James Brooksby, who felt that demos were giving away too much content for free.

We've just received word that the premium Hulu service we've heard chatter about for a while now has just become official. Dubbed Hulu Plus, the $10 / month service will feature entire seasons of shows that are available in limited quantities on the free service, as well as other programming not available via Hulu on the web. There will be iPod and iPad apps available (streaming with WiFi or 3G), along with support for Samsung connected TVs and Blu-ray (via Samsung Apps). Also in the works is support for TVs and Blu-ray players from both Vizio and Sony (fall 2010), PS3 (July) , and Xbox 360 (as part of a "custom experience" in Xbox Live Gold, early 2011). Hit up the source link to get in on the "invitation only" preview of the service, and to keep abreast of availability for your favorite hardware. Video after the break.

The iPhone 4's massive launch hasn't been blemish free, with reports of spotty displays (which seem to have disappeared) and antenna woes being rather widely reported. Well -- it looks like it's possible there's another issue too -- this time with the proximity sensor. Now, we're no strangers to spontaneously turning on speakerphone with our faces (though admittedly our cheeks are pretty round), so it's hard to say if this is an iPhone 4-specific issue, but the mounting reports would suggest that it's possible the new handsets sensor is a little bit... over sensitive. Reported issues include accidentally disconnecting calls, throwing the speakerphone switch, and putting people on hold accidentally. What about you? Are you having problems with your iPhone 4's proximity sensor? Let us know in the comments.

AdMob's latest monthly Mobile Metrics report reveals that iPhone and Android together now account for 42% of ad requests on its network.
That shows how dominant the two platforms are over rivals, since 46% of AdMob's requests come from smartphones - i.e. only 4% come from OS' that aren't iPhone or Android.
AdMob has also broken out its iPad ad requests for May 2010, revealing that 58% of them came from the US, followed by Japan (5%), the UK (4%), China (4%) and Canada (3%).
The company also says that 92 countries generated more than 10 million monthly requests in May 2010, up from 27 two years ago.
However, this is the last Mobile Metrics report from AdMob, following its acquisition by Google.
"We plan to continue sharing data that will help everyone in the industry, but will take a break from issuing the Mobile Metrics Report while we consider how to re-invent the report to make it more useful and relevant," says the company.
However, it will maintain its Mobile Metrics Blog, and post data there.

Yes, there’s a problem… Oh no, wait, there isn’t… Apple can’t quite seem to make its mind up about its official line regarding the now infamous iPhone 4 antenna issue.
Now BoyGeniusReport has got its hands on Apple’s procedure documents that are given to AppleCare customer service reps tasked with fielding calls from those getting in touch to complain about dropped calls on their new handsets.
Perhaps the most interesting thing to note is the insistence that Apple is not handing out free bumpers and looks unlikely to in the future.
Here’s the text in full:
1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4’s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.
2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.

US developer Appy Entertainment says its FaceFighter series of iOS games have been downloaded more than 3.8 million times. That includes both free downloads of FaceFighter Lite, and paid downloads of FaceFighter, FaceFighter Gold and iPad spin-off FaceFighter HD Face2Face.
Appy also says that nearly 33 million individual sessions have been played on the games, adding up to more than 250 man-years of playtime.
Meanwhile, players are sharing 2,500 images a day collectively on email, Facebook and Twitter.
The game lets people create a boxer with the face of a friend, via a photo-import feature, then batter the living daylights out of them, sharing the bruises for posterity.
The game was originally released in June last year, and Appy says updates are on the way for all the existing games, with a new title coming in Autumn.

Sometimes, news items are just about a good laugh. You may or may not like Apple, but the way it has been handling their antenna issue has been like a small tech soap-opera. Steve Jobs, the CEO, claiming "not to hold the phone that way", rumors or software issues, and the latest but most crunchy part, since the antenna issue has been widely discovered, on the 23 june, several "Antenna engineer" positions opened up at Apple. Seems someone got fired: Antenna engineer job position 1, Antenna engineer job position 2, Antenna engineer job position 3."
I just figure they did all their testing in California, where AT&T dropping calls is as common as $4 coffees.

It is shockingly easy to gain access to an AT&T customer's voicemail using caller ID spoofing techniques. What's worse is that AT&T knows about it. On your Android phone, download one of the two caller ID spoofing programs. Input the number of your target as the destination number and then enter the same number as the spoofed caller ID. Then connect your call. If the target has not added a voicemail password (the default is no password), you will be dropped into a random menu of their voicemail and eventually can drill up or down to get what you want. You can change greetings, erase messages, send voicemails out of the target account, and much more. How many politicians up in arms about Google Wi-Fi sniffing will want to know more about this?

We know that the iPad is selling like hotcakes, but how satisfied are the people who buy it? Over at Technologizer, we conducted a survey of 6,000 iPad early adopters. There are a few places where they were critical — the majority, for instance, aren't happy with Apple's App Store approval process. Overall, however, they're overwhelmingly upbeat.

The iPhone 4's antenna issues have sparked off a firestorm of debate as to the root cause -- Apple says holding the phone differently or buying a case are the best answers, while other are going down a more voodoo path -- but our friends at AnandTech have done some more scientific testing of the problem and come up with a few interesting results. Turns out the iPhone 4 actually performs slightly better inside a case than a phone like the Nexus One, which has had similar issues crop up, but it's slightly worse when held in the hand, reporting an average signal drop of 20dB. Here's where it gets a little wacky, though: the signal meter in iOS 4 is logarithmic, so that 20dB drop can either leave you looking steady at five bars or drop you all the way to zero, depending on what the actual signal level in the area is like. Take a look at the chart above and you'll get it: the range of values between one bar and four spans just 23dB, while the range for five bars is 40dB. That means holding the phone in an area with a strong five-bar signal will have no apparent effect -- you can lose 20dB at full signal and still see five bars -- but holding the phone in an area with weaker coverage will easily drop the meter to one bar, since the 20dB signal drop covers almost the entirety of the remaining 23dB scale. Oops.
Of course, that's just the on-screen display, which Apple can and likely will tweak in a future iOS update. The real question is whether the reported signal has anything to do with performance, and Anandtech agrees with our general experience, saying that the iPhone 4's improved signal to noise ratio means it actually does a better job of hanging onto calls and using data when there's low signal than the iPhone 3GS. In their words, "this iPhone gets the best cellular reception yet, even though measured signal is lower than the 3GS." However, there's no getting around the fact that we've definitely dropped a couple calls with the iPhone 4 by holding it the wrong way, and Anandtech says the only real solution to the antenna issue will be for Apple to either subsidize free bumpers or add an insulative coating to the antenna band. We'll see what happens -- we've got a feeling an iOS update is on the way, but we'd definitely love to see Apple pursue a more aggressive solution to this problem.

Last we'd heard, the next major release of Android -- codename Gingerbread -- was scheduled for a fourth-quarter launch, but the always-entertaining Eldar Murtazin has apparently just spilled a few details on what he knows of the release on a Russian podcast. Most notably, the dude says that we can expect an entirely revamped UI -- the first that the platform will have undergone since its introduction -- and will take cues from the fancy 3D Gallery app launched with Eclair. There's said to be a new 1280 x 760 resolution available for devices larger than 4 inches, which would dovetail nicely with Verizon's desire to bring a bunch of Android tablets to market. Like Windows Phone 7, Murtazin claims that Google will be laying down the law with some hardcore hardware specs to run 3.0, demanding a minimum of a 3.5-inch display, a 1GHz processor, and 512MB of RAM -- so what about cheaper devices? Well, those will apparently continue to run Android 2.1 or 2.2, which sounds like yet another serious recipe for platform fragmentation from the outset. We'll apparently see the first devices launch in time for the holidays following an October introduction, which lines up with what we've heard so far. Needless to say, we'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

What did JFK, Obama, and Martin Luther King Jr. all have in common? If you believe the makers of You Prompt-It!, it's the ability to use a teleprompter. And now you can join the pantheon of important Americans who inspire us regular schlubs to greatness. What does your $130 get you? Tripod, base, beamsplitter glass display, and a carrying case. Fits your iPhone or iPhone-esque device, and will sit comfortably on your laptop. To get that scrolling text effect, the manufacturer suggests that you check out the PROPROMPTER app from the App Store. What are you waiting for? We're quite frankly getting sick of all the hemming and hawing on your YouTube rants. Maybe now you can start winning people over with your "Larry King is an alien from the future" message -- it's worth a shot at least.

Apple hasn't been shy about dropping support for older hardware and software in recent years, and it looks like the iPhone and iPod touch are no exception: according to a short note on the iPhone developer site encouraging devs to get ready for iOS 4, the App Store will no longer affect apps that target iOS 2. That doesn't really mean much right now -- apart from a few iPod touch owners who didn't pay the $10 iOS 3 upgrade fee, we doubt there are many people out there still running iOS 2 -- but we can see Apple dropping support for iOS 3 apps next year when iOS 5 and a new iPhone are announced, and that'll effectively be the end of the original iPhone and touch, which can't be upgraded to iOS 4. That's a four-year shelf life, which isn't too bad considering the insane pace of mobile development, but we can still shed a tear -- especially since we paid $599 for the damn thing on contract way back when.

You didn't think the folks at iFixit would simply teardown the iPhone 4 and call it a day, did you? They've now gone the extra mile and done a detailed teardown of the iPhone 4's gyroscope with a little help from Chipworks. That's of course a MEMS (or microelectromechanical system) gyroscope and, according to Chipworks, nearly identical to an off-the-shelf STMicroelectronics L3G4200D gyroscope, which is actually what they used for the teardown. What's more, they also went even further and put another gyroscope (not used in the iPhone 4) under an electron microscope just to illustrate how incredibly complex and minute the structure of MEMS gyroscopes are. Head on past the break for a glimpse of that, and hit up the link below for the complete teardown.

Ever since Apple decided to do little about the iPhone 4's pronounced reception issues except suggest that users hold the thing differently and / or buy a nice case, the voodoo engineering remedies have been flying in full force -- sure, we'll admit we tried sticking some tape over the side of our phone (no dice), but we stopped short when people suggested we try a couple coats of nail polish (insanity). Even we have limits, after all. But the latest snake oil fix is definitely the craziest we've heard so far: according to a 13-page (and growing) thread at MacRumors, the iPhone 4's reception issue can be fixed by adjusting or even trimming the micro SIM so the contacts don't touch the metal tray. The popular belief is that touching the side of the phone somehow shorts across the micro SIM, causing (mumble mumble) and leading to dropped signal. Making things more interesting, Apple and AT&T are apparently using several different types of micro SIMs, including one with a significantly larger contact area -- you can check a shot of two of our iPhone 4 micro SIMs side-by-side after the break.
So does all this hocus pocus actually work? In a word, no. We tried it on a few of our particularly bad iPhone 4s -- the ones that consistently demonstrate the issue -- and achieved no meaningful results. We even went so far as to line the edge of one of our trimmed micro SIMs in electrical tape (pictured above) to ensure that no contact was being made, and we were still able to flatline the phone using the "death grip." Sorry folks -- we wanted this to work too, but it looks like people are just being hopefully optimistic. We'd say the real fix is going to have to come from Apple -- and given the growing discontent over this relatively severe issue, the sooner the better.
