Test apps to receive individual windows, camera access and in-app payments.
RIM announced the 'Android Runtime for BlackBerry' in Q1, a porting platform for Google OS developers that will allow apps to convert from Android to the PlayBook.
Now, the firm has updated the testing kit, enabling developers to run an app in individual windows to determine how the creation runs in comparison to other runtime apps.
Developers creating photo-based apps will also be able to access the camera technology on the device, while in-app payments are available for users to include virtual items and upgrades as a means of monetising their designs.
In particular, RIM highlights device encryption as a key feature, offering added security for the device and individual runtimes.
The Android BlackBerry partnership will likely provide PlayBook users with a new means of entertainment when it does eventually go live.

Achieved following respective summer launches in 2010 and 2011.
Samsung's flagship line has grown into the world's most desired smartphone – along with iPhone – with the Galaxy S passing 24 million sales in two years, while the S II has hit more than 28 million in just one year.
Meanwhile, its Galaxy Note 'phablet' device has hit the seven million milestone in seven months.
And the signs look good for the future of the brand too. The new Galaxy S III launched this week with nine million pre-orders.
However, it still has a way to go to compete with Apple's most recent quarterly sales of 30 million iPhones.

New online feature created to replicate the experience of using the new Windows Phone7 ESPN Hub app.
Last October, ESPN and Nokia announced they would pre-load the ESPN Hub on millions of Lumia handsets. The app provides scores, stats, news, analysis and video highlights for more than a dozen sports.
Now, interested users can see how it looks on the web via thus homepage takeover on various ESPN sites. The move is part of an ad campaign ESPN is delivering for Nokia.
The emulator replicates the trademark WinPho tiles and also pulls in live content from the ESPN.co.uk site.
ESPN Hub launched in the US and UK earlier this year, and in recent months has also launched in South Africa, Chile, Columbia, Brazil and Mexico and Indonesia, with launches later this year in the Philippines, Australia and France, among others.
Bryan Biniak, VP, global partnering & application development at Nokia, said: “Our partnership with ESPN brings together world leaders in sports and mobile, to deliver outstanding, exclusive experiences to Nokia Lumia consumers.

As the middle child from Sony Mobile's NXT family, the Xperia P steps out from behind the Xperia S' shadow with its own 4-inch screen -- and a touch of WhiteMagic. Screen technology aside, the phone's design follows a path very similar to Sony's latest flagship and picks up a few quirks of its own on the way. The see-through button strip is actually touch-sensitive on Sony's 2012 middle-weight -- a curious oversight on the bigger model.
It packs Sony's 8-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor (likely to be the same one found in the Xperia Arc S), a dual-core 1GHz processor and just under 13GB of user-accessible storage. But there's one unfortunate Xperia trait here -- we're still playing with Android Gingerbread, even while its ancestors begin to dip their toes into Ice Cream Sandwich. Does anyone want an incrementally smaller Android phone from Sony? And what exactly is WhiteMagic and what does it mean for the battery life?

Those who like to swing both ways will be glad to know that SkyDrive for the iPad now supports Apple's gorgeous Retina Display. Now, before you ask why the hell pixel density would be of concern for a cloud storage app, remember that SkyDrive also allows users to view photos and documents from within the application -- only now at a properly rendered 264ppi. In addition to the peeper-pleasing improvement, SkyDrive users will also find the ability to upload multiple photos and videos from their iPad to the cloud, new file-sharing options (either via email, or a link that you can copy and paste), along with the ability to open SkyDrive files from within other iOS apps. It's funny how something so out of place can be so right.

Well, it's about time that Ice Cream Sandwich made some headway -- even if the process is much slower than consumers deserve. According to the Android developer hub, Android 4.0 now accounts for 7.1 percent of all Android smartphone and tablet installations, which is a sharp and welcome increase over the 2.9 percent figure that we reported just two months ago. Naturally, Gingerbread users still account for the lion's share of the Android ecosystem with 65 percent, but it's worth pointing out that this segment also grew during the last month -- no doubt at the expense of Froyo and Eclair. Don't know about you, but we like our desserts fresh, thank you very much. Go ahead and hop the break to see the full breakdown.

In the interest of keeping cool this summer, we've put together a list of the hottest products out right now. From smartphones to e-readers and everything in between, there's no time like the present to re-up that post-spring-cleaning stash. So grab a popsicle or a cold one and dive in -- the water's just right.
As you prepare for adventures with friends and fun in the sun, just remember that a great smartphone should be at the top of your gear list. Whether you're looking for travel tips, a new place to hang or even directions to get there, your smartphone will have you covered. It can help you check-in for flights, rent a car and even get great deals on places to stay. Go ahead and leave your point-and-shoot camera at home, because many of today's best smartphones excel at photography and allow you to immediately share your memories as they're captured. If you plan to travel abroad, be sure to spring for an unlocked handset to avoid those nasty roaming fees. Whatever your particular needs, our smartphone selection is geared to make your decision as painless as possible - and more importantly, ensure that you have a fun and rewarding summer. Dive in on the other side of the break.
[h=2]Editors' Choice[/h] |
[h=4]HTC One X[/h]If you're truly wanting to start your summer off with a bang, look no further than the HTC One X, which is available in an unlocked, international model (approx. $600), or domestically through AT&T for $199 -- the latter of which sports longer battery life and comes with LTE connectivity. The One X best represents many of the qualities that we look for in a handset, and along with its stellar build quality and gorgeous, 4.7-inch 720p display (of the non-PenTile variety), it also features one of the best cameras available in a smartphone and boasts wicked performance. Put simply, the One X adheres most closely to the ideals of the ultimate Engadget smartphone.
Price: $200 (on contract) at AT&T |

[h=4]Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+[/h]We're big believers in unlocked handsets 'round these parts, and now that the Galaxy Nexus is available directly from Google on the Play Store for a mere $399 -- with a full warranty, mind you -- it's a deal that you'd be hard-pressed to refuse. In addition to providing users deliverance from carrier bloatware and being first in line for updates, unlocked smartphones offer owners the unique advantage of using their mobile phone on any compatible network. This particular Galaxy Nexus features a pentaband HSPA+ radio, which means that you'll be ready to roll on either T-Mobile or AT&T, along with a large number of international carriers.
Price: $400 at Google |
 |
[h=4]Apple iPhone 4S[/h]Many Engadget editors use the iPhone 4S as their daily driver, and for good reason -- it offers simplistic integration with Apple's incredible ecosystem and access to a selection of apps that's beyond reproach. The phone's famed Retina Display remains a hallmark in the mobile industry for its stunning clarity, and while some may scoff at its 3.5-inch screen size, the iPhone 4S is easily the best choice for those who'd like a compact handset. We're also big fans of its excellent camera and Siri voice assistant. The 16GB iPhone 4S is available from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon for $199, along with a number of regional carriers. Frequent international travelers should seek out the unlocked model directly from Apple, which starts at $649.
Price: $200 to $850 at Apple |
 |
[h=4]Nokia Lumia 900[/h]If you'd like to dive into summer with an excellent handset, yet don't want to blow your budget along the way, the Nokia Lumia 900 will be the savior of the season. At just $100 on-contract through AT&T, it's unequivocally the best smartphone deal by a country mile. The vibrant, 4.3-inch ClearBlack display features a polarization filter that'll let you view content in direct sunlight, and its 8-megapixel camera will go a long way toward accurately preserving the memories of your travels. What's more, the Lumia 900 can also access AT&T's speedy LTE network, which you can then use to provide an internet connection to your laptops and tablets.
Price: $99 (on contract) at AT&T |

Instapaper creator Marco Arment has been kept so busy with the iOS version that he decided to contract out the Android iteration to Mobelux. Fortunately, this is the same developer that crafted Tumblr apps for both the iPhone and Android, so we can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Available today, priced just shy of $3, Instapaper ties together one of iOS' favorites with Android's capacity for sharing across multiple apps. It arrives cocooned in a decidedly classy UI, even on our Gingerbread devices -- although it does get a little squashed in some sub-menus. As long as you're running an Android version higher than 2.2, hit up the source below to give it a try.

EA highlights social elements of football game as new connective features unveiled
At the E3 2012 press conference, EA called the FIFA football franchise "Football's social network".
The new vision of the game as a dialogue between fans comes as EA unveils new features to the hit series that will take the bestselling football game to the social scene.
The heart of this social network is the 'Football Club', which the publisher claims has over 11 million members.
Fans will now be able to connect their FIFA empire to games played on iOS devices, as well as an iPhone app, expanding EA's dream of a multiplatform experience that can be played how, when, and where a customer choses.
EA also revealed what sounded like a microtransaction or subscription service with social elements.

Google's Android platform has become the most popular mobile operating system both among consumers and malware writers, and the company earlier this year introduced the Bouncer system to look for malicious apps in the Google Play market. Bouncer, which checks for malicious apps and known malware, is a good first step, but as new work from researchers Jon Oberheide and Charlie Miller shows, it can be bypassed quite easily and in ways that will be difficult for Google to address in the long term. Oberheide and Miller, both well-known for their work on mobile security, went into their research without much detailed knowledge of how the Bouncer system works. Google has said little publicly about its capabilities, preferring not to give attackers any insights into the system's inner workings. So Oberheide and Miller looked at it as a challenge, an exercise to see how much they could deduce about Bouncer from the outside, and, as it turns out, the inside."

Microsoft is likely as eager to announce the upcoming version of Windows Phone -- known as Apollo or Windows Phone 8 -- as we are to hear about it. Fortunately, we expect the answers to our many questionswon't be left unanswered for much longer, as the folks in Redmond are flying down to San Francisco to offer us a sneak peak of "the future of Windows Phone." Certainly, we're hoping this brief look at the next OS will be more expansive than, say, the BlackBerry 10 reveal last month. Either way, we'll be at the event to cover every single detail, so mark your calendar!

It might be that Cricket's iPhone deal is just the tip of the prepaid iceberg: insiders reportedly say that Sprint's pay-as-you-go brand Virgin Mobile will be taking the Apple plunge as well. Details of what it will cost are still very much unknown, although we'd look to Cricket's $500 unsubsidized iPhone 4S and $35 monthly plan as strong clues. If the WSJ's connections are accurate, though, we could see a Virgin iPhone for the US as soon as its northern neighbor Canada blows out the birthday candles, on July 1st. At this rate, the only American carrier of any kind without an iPhone will be T-Mobile, and it's clear that this glaring exception is eager to hop onboard.

The tales of Apple possibly dumping Google Maps as the backend for iOS 6's Maps app are gathering steam, but we're now learning just how much forethought may have gone into the split. According to theWSJ's favorite tipsters, "people familiar with the matter," Apple isn't just hoping to spurn Android -- it's reacting to push-back it got years earlier. Google supposedly delayed Street View, and blocked Google Maps Navigation outright, as it wasn't getting the limelight for branding and couldn't push in social tracking services that tend to make a privacy-sensitive Apple jittery, like Latitude. The August 2009 buyout of Placebase was ground zero for Apple's shift, which saw subsequent deals for Poly9 and C3 Technologies flesh out the project.
As for the end results? They supposedly include turn-by-turn navigation that mimics an "in-car GPSdevice," and regular mapping should now be free to integrate with other apps: Calendar might warn you if a traffic jam on Interstate 280 will affect that appointment at 1 Infinite Loop, as an example. We might not have long to wait for the truth behind the new tips and earlier leaked shots, as the contacts believe Apple could show its Maps overhaul when WWDC starts next week.

Hitting the big six digits is no small feat for an app store, so it's definitely worth celebrating. Taking just over five months to double its numbers, the Windows Phone Marketplace has now seen 100,000 applications submitted since its humble beginnings, and now enjoys an average daily submission count of 313 apps. As a disclaimer, this doesn't mean we currently have access to all hundred-thousand apps -- just over 10,000 of them are no longer available, which translates into 88,371 apps being live somewhere in the world. Still, the milestone is an important one because only two other app stores have made it this far (we bet you can guess which ones). The Marketplace reached this mark five months faster than the Android Market, but three months slower than the iOS App Store. Given the popularity of both competitors, we'd say that developer growth has been strong and steady for Windows Phone -- and with an exciting 'sneak peek' of the OS's future (Apollo) coming up in a couple weeks, the trend is likely to continue increasing at an exponential pace.

Are you one of those folks who depends heavily on an iPhone 4 / 3GS unlock, but made the unsafe trip toward iOS 5.1.1 territory? Worry no more, as the hard-working Dev-Team's come through yet again, delivering its newest version of ultrasn0w to help alleviate your carrier lockdown problems. Version 1.2.7 of the unlocking method is friendly with iPhone 4s (nope, not the 4S) on baseband 01.59.00, while the older 3G / 3GS slabs will have to be on 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 or 06.15.00. To go along with the latest ultrasn0w release, the Dev-Team also outed a fresh copy of RedSn0w (0.9.12b1) for both Windows and Mac, making it easier for devices sporting Cupertino's A4 chip -- and other earlier ones -- to adopt and restore using an untethered solution. All in all, we'd say it's a pretty good day for thejailbreak scene.

Well, we can't exactly say we saw this one coming. Microsoft has today taken the wraps off a rather ambitious project dubbed on{X}, which is available exclusively for Android smartphones initially (support for more platforms is planned), and offers a range of tools that promise to help "automate your life." Developed by the company's R&D Center in Israel, the service consists of a website and an app, the former of which lets you select from a variety of scripts (or "recipes," as Microsoft calls them), while the latter executes them on your phone. The kicker is that anyone can create their own recipes and share them with others, and they can take all of the capabilities of a smartphone into account -- performing an action when you arrive at a specific location, for instance, or setting reminders based on the weather forecast (all the actual processing is handled on the phone). Much like Kinect, Microsoft is hoping that folks will take the platform and run with it, developing new features that it hasn't even thought of. Those interested can get started right now at the source link below, or get a taste of the service in the video after the break.

Continues focus on the low end market with a new Symbian-powered touchscreen trio.
Just three weeks ago, Nokia revealed a new social feature phone range with a special focus on 'urban youngsters'.
Now, the Finnish OEM has unveiled the Asha Touch series - building on the existing Asha range – comprising the 305, the 306, and the 311, all of which feature Nokia's data compression browser.
The 311 is the most powerful model, with 1GHz speeds and HSPA access, the 305 is dual-SIM device, while the single-SIM 306 is the 'most affordable wi-fi handset to date'.
Mary T. McDowell, executive VP for mobile phones, Nokia, said: "These phones deliver on what young, urban people value most -- a great-looking device; and an intuitive and affordable experience for connecting to the internet, to their friends, and to a world of entertainment, web apps and content."
The 305 has a €63 RRP and a Q2 release, while the 306 and 311 have respective €68 and €92 price tags and both are set for a Q3 launch.

3G is the standard mobile web platform for developed countries, and Ericsson reckons 85 per cent of the people will be using the spectrum within five years.
Additionally, 3G successor LTE is expected to be used by 50 per cent of people, as smartphone subscriptions grow to three billion in 2017, up from 700 million last year.
Meanwhile, mobile subscriptions are set to near nine billion by 2017, up from six billion in 2011, with M2M communications adding to the increase, while mobile data traffic is set to rise by 15 times in the same period.
Douglas Gilstrap, senior VP and head of strategy, Ericsson, said: "Today, people see access to the internet as a prerequisite for any device. This mindset results in growing demand for mobile broadband and increased data traffic.
"Operators recognise this business opportunity and are aiming to facilitate this growth and provide good user experience with fast data speeds through high capacity networks. Today, around 75 per cent of the HSPA networks worldwide have been upgraded to a peak speed of 7.2 Mbps or above and around 40% has been upgraded to 21 Mbps."

Is the threat of mobile over-hyped?
NO Angry Birds has been downloaded 1bn times.
Not even the longest-running and biggest boxed franchises like Mario, The Sims and Call of Duty have reached such heights in terms of unit sales.
And we’re talking about an IP that has been around for less than three years.
Games such as these have benefitted not just from the growth of smartphones, but an explosion in tablet sales.
During its recent earnings call, Apple said it had sold 67m iPads in the first two years. It took the firm 24 years to sell that many Macs, five years to sell that many iPods and three years to sell that many iPhones. And these numbers don’t include Android tablets, such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
Yet what kind of impact has the growth of these products and the sales of cheap apps had on the traditional handheld games sector?
Early signs have been mixed. 3DS got off to a slow start, although a price cut, a new marketing push and some Mario games have helped turn that platform around, with over 17m units sold worldwide.
PS Vita has also got off to an unspectacular opening. But again, it is too early to draw any conclusions on that platform. Yet Gamesbrief’s Nicholas Lovell believes Sony and Nintendo has a fight on its hands with Apple and Google.
“The mobile and the tablet taken together are very dangerous to the traditional console market,” he tells MCV. “They are desirable pieces of kit. They offer a vast range of high-quality content at very low prices or free. The process of paying for a game is simple. Companies can make more from an iOS title than they can with a core game.
“Development costs are low – perhaps one hundredth of the cost of developing for a console. There is a wrinkle, though: the hardcore market likes a particular type of game. They like triple-A blockbusters, with vast unnecessary budgets. But I can’t imagine another generation of consoles after the next one.”
Zynga’s COO John Schappert told MCV last month that there is a space for big core games, but that mobile will become the mainstream form of gaming.
He says: “I think [boxed console games] is a really tough business. Is there still a market for it? Absolutely.
“Did movie theatres die away when television came? No. But what do we watch more of?”

We'd heard earlier that Google had "nothing to announce" in regard to Android compatibility with thenewly-announced offline Maps support and 3D modeling, but look -- things change. We reached out to the company and urged 'em to dig a little deeper, only to have the following confirmed: "For offline Google Maps for Android, all devices with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and above will be supported." As for the3D portion? "We'll have more details about device compatibility for 3D imagery on Google Earth for mobile at launch." After the event, we spotted a Googler using the 3D build on a Galaxy Nexus, so it's obvious that Android 4.0+ will be supported, but we have to assume that some of these older Froyo devices may simply lack the proper oomph needed to fly around the downtowns of [insert major metropolitan area here].

The idea of creating a full-fledged laptop companion to a smartphone isn't new -- just ask the former Palm team -- but rarely has it come across as so pretty. Clamcase's upcoming Clambook, while it has more than a slight hint of MacBook Air about it, is really meant as a large canvas of sight and sound for an Android phone or iPhone. Although the Clambook can at least be used as a big, 16:9 ratio display for an iPhone, the emphasis is clearly on more Google-inclined users that can use an MHL port: the one cable provides audio, video, power, an Android 4.0-native keyboard and a multi-touch trackpad. More recent Motorola phone owners might get the most out of it, since Webtop's full-size Firefox browser and windowed interface will kick in without needing one of Motorola's proprietary docks. We're still waiting on many basic details, like exact device support and the all-important matter of pricing, but the Clamcase should be ready for supersized Real Racing sessions by the holidays.

Google's Maps event has just given us a much-requested feature: true offline map support. Android users can soon opt to download full maps for given areas (instead of just caching routes) without needing a cellular or WiFi connection. It's a big boon for those of us who have to travel abroad to unfamiliar cities, or just to areas where underground tunnels might cut off Internet access before GPS. Unfortunately, that's all that Google was willing to share: Android phones and tablets will only be getting the upgrade sometime "soon." Still, that's one less advantage for Nokia Drive, and one more hurdle to jump for Appleat WWDC next week.
Update: We just followed up with Peter Birch following the keynote regarding version compatibility for offline and 3D Maps, and were told that Google "has nothing to announce at this time," but will do so in the coming weeks. We prodded a bit to see if 2.x devices would be in the mix, and all we got was a non-confirming reply about an "assumption" that if Google Maps Navigation is supported, offline and 3D would be as well.

The HBO Go streaming app has been available on Android since it launched last year, however despite a steady flow of updates and even Android 4.0 support, until now it hasn't supported Android tablets. That changes today, however for now at least the only one on the list is Amazon's Kindle Fire, while other tablet owners will have to fall back to their browser and Flash streaming workarounds for access. There's a press release and quick video trailer promoting the launch after the break, while Fire owners who are also HBO subscribers (and satellite / cable TV subscribers, of course) can grab it for free on Amazon's Appstore now.

After a strong start Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet appears to be losing both sales and consumer interest.
According to a report on AllThingsD, global shipments of the device fell from 4.8 million units in the fourth quarter to 750,000 units last quarter. In December 2011, Amazon was selling around 1 million Kindle Fireunits a week.
This decline is reflected in the results from a new survey by ChangeWeave research. From a sample of 2,893 American consumers, only 8 per cent indicated any interest in purchasing the Kindle Fire in the next 90 days. In a similar survey last November, 22 per cent of participants expressed interest in the device.

This is a bold projection from IDC, given that the WinPho's share currently sits at just 5.2 per cent, while iOS is on 20.5 per cent.
It says these shares are due to change respectively to 19.2 per cent and 19 per cent in the next five years.
So the WinPho lead will be very slight, but it's still a lead, and it's important for fledgling Nokia, as its devices in emerging markets are set to drive the share increase.
What makes it even more audacious is that the first tranche of Nokia Lumia devices has not been an overwhelming success, and the firm is still focused on Symbian in developing markets.
IDC reckons Android will continue to dominate the market, although its share will fall from 61 per cent to 52.9 per cent, while BlackBerry will have a minimal loss from six per cent to 5.9 per cent.

First-person shooter invites you to kill the living dead.
Madfinger Games developed the app – powered by Unity – which has been designed to provide an enhanced gameplay experience with realistic graphics to compete with console releases.
Worryingly, Dead Trigger is set in 2012, at a time where the modern world has fallen as billions have died from an infection, while the survivors have been turned into zombies.
Users take on the role as one of several resisting humans that are fighting for survival by fighting off the contaminated cannibals with gunshots and thumb-based eye-gouging – as demonstrated in the trailer below.
Marek Rabas, CEO of Madfinger Games, said: "We are very proud to announce our very first First-Person Shooter on mobile devices. By using new technologies to raise visual quality again, Dead Trigger represents a further step in our production.
"We enhanced the visual experience by using motion captured animation, improved creation of characters or new shaders effects. But it‘s not only an issue of graphics, we are working very hard on gameplay mechanics as well."

New microfluidic panel tech raises shapes from the surface on demand.
Tactus Technology is behind the 'Tactile Layer' panel that enables touchscreen device users to summon physical buttons on request, which then retract back into the surface when no longer required.
The firm has made its first public demo – on an Android tablet – and it claims the layer is completely flat, transparent, and adds no extra thickness to the standard touchscreen display, allowing users to operate the buttons as they would do on a regular keyboard.
It's an interesting concept, given that most smartphone buyers are restricted to BlackBerry for physical keyboards, with the majority of devices being rolled out only featuring a touchscreen.
Mark Hamblin, Founder & CTO of Touch Revolution – Tactus partner – said: "We are looking forward to seeing new mobile and consumer devices using our combined technologies in 2013."

Apple is attempting to have sales of the Samsung Galaxy S3 banned in the United States, alleging that the device infringes on patents.
CNet reports that the US vendor has decided to launch yet another patent infringement lawsuit after the device went on sale in the UK last month and a few weeks before the scheduled US launch dates.
Apparently, two software related patents have allegedly been violated, one covering unified search and the other covering links.
“It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging, This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas,” said an Apple statement.
However, Samsung has rejected the allegations as being “without merit”.
“We will vigorously oppose the request and demonstrate to the court that the Galaxy S III is innovative and distinctive,” said a Samsung spokesman. “We would also like to assure consumers that the U.S. launch and sales of the Galaxy S III will proceed as planned. The Galaxy S III has already been highly received in markets where it has been introduced. Samsung looks forward to bringing the Galaxy S III to the U.S., and we believe that Apple's actions would only serve to disrupt consumers' access to the latest innovative mobile technology.”

A thousand workers rioted at Foxconn’s iPhone factory in China earlier this week.
The Daily Mail reported that on Monday night employees from the Foxconn plant in Chengdu, China, clashed with security guards who were attempting to stop a thief. Dozens were arrested during the two-hour riot, which broke out on a dormitory of the plant.
It is reported that rioters threw trash cans, office furniture, bottles and fireworks from the upper floors of an on-site male dormitory. The thief is said to have been an employee with a grudge against the company over pay.
Foxconn is an Apple partner and manufactures components for iPhone and iPad. The company has come under fire in the past for allegedly forcing staff to work long hours in unsafe conditions and for low pay.
Along with this, back in 2010 it was reported that fourteen Foxconn employees committed suicide in just 11 months. This prompted investigations by several of its customers including Apple, Dell and HP.

Six months after submission cloud gaming outfit still working hard to make app live
Cloud gaming provider OnLive has not given up hope of its iOS app going live – despite submitting it to Apple six months ago.
The iOS OnLive app was revealed at E3 2011 and very much pitched as a key part of the package. When used in conjunction with OnLive’s Bluetooth joypad it would allow users a complete triple-A core games experience when on the move.
But since stating in early December last year that the app was undergoing the Apple approval process, nothing has been heard.
Now TouchArcade claims to have word direct from the E3 show floor that the company is “still hard at work on getting the app approved” and that it doesn’t “show any signs of giving up on the project”.
The logical conclusion is to assume that Apple has remained reluctant to allow the app as it effectively allows OnLive to operate its own, revenue-generating gaming ecosystem operating independently of Apple through Apple hardware.

"Intel claims it is making significant improvements to the multicore performance of Android — but isn't sure if it's willing to share them with the open-source community. Speaking to journalists in London, Intel's mobile chief Mike Bell said that Intel's engineers were making significant improvements to Android's scheduler to improve its multicore performance. 'Android doesn't make as effective use of multicore as it could,' he said. However, when pressed by PC Pro on whether those improvements would be shared with the open-source community and Intel's competitors, Bell remained non-committal. 'Where we are required to give back to open source, we do,' said Bell. 'In cases where it's not required to be open source, I'm going to think about it. I don't like doing R&D for competitors if they're not going to contribute themselves,' said Bell, before adding that 'in general, our philosophy is to give things back.'"

While Facebook said it would deliver a version of its App Center store for mobile, it was shy on how that would work. An early iOS tester (since confirmed by TechCrunch) apparently didn't want to wait for an official explanation and slipped out a handful of shots: they show a mobile-optimized store that will look familiar to anyone who's picked up an iPhone or an Android phone in the past few years, but with an appropriately social bent. Friends' recommendations come front and center, and are so prominent that they take precedence over the app description; we're wondering if Facebook isn't pressuring us into downloading apps like it's a schoolyard dare. Facebook is still reluctant to say when App Center will hit pint-size proportions for everyone, though the largely complete-looking test version gives us hope for a quicker launch.

 [h=3]More Info[/h]
In the tablet market, big as it is, one notion generally holds true: thinner equals better. Toshiba, for example, surely tried to equate a svelte silhouette with a premium product in its super-slim Excite 10 LE. And indeed, its 1.18-pound body and solid Honeycomb experience add up to tablet that puts Toshiba's earlier Thrives to shame. That $530 model is definitely priced like a high-end tablet, but it's accompanied by a new, lower-priced Toshiba slate, the Excite 10.
For $450, you get a tablet with a tad more meat on its bones, but that increase in weight and thickness comes with some more powerful specs: a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM -- not to mention Ice Cream Sandwich. While you can probably guess which of these slates makes a stronger contender (hint: the one without the "LE"), figuring out the Toshiba Excite 10's place in the grand hierarchy of tablets takes a little more exploration. Luckily, that's what we're here for, so join us past the break as we do our best to get through the review without a single "excite" pun.

It's not the first iPhone 4/4S pico projector battery case we've come across here at Engadget, but we spotted this little number at Computex 2012 and just couldn't resist sharing it with you. What makes this accessory a bit more unique is that it incorporates the latest in DLP technology from Texas Instruments. As such, it's capable of projecting a 640x360-pixel image up to 70 inches across with 1000:1 contrast ratio. The 2200mAh battery lasts about 3 hours on a charge an can even top off your iPhone in a pinch. Additional features include a built-in speaker powered by a 0.5W audio amplifier. We spent a few minutes using the pico projector and while it works pretty much as advertised, it clearly struggled with the harsh lighting conditions of the show floor. Stay tuned for pricing and availability, but don't miss our hands-on gallery below and our demo video after the break.

If the MK802 piqued your interest but has you pining for Ubuntu, Linux Questions forum user michaelfisk has a solution. The secret sauce is a pre-baked image of Ubuntu 10.04 modified for a different device using the same 1.5 GHz Allwinner processor. Simply slide a microSD card prepped with a bootable image of the distro into the mini PC and you're set. Though Lucid Lynx can be coaxed to run on the $74 mini PC without considerable hassle, performance isn't exactly top notch -- unseemly load times and a few kinks are reportedly throughout the experience. Eager to load up your Cotton Candycompetitor with Linux? Hop past the break to see Liliputing give it a test drive or hit the links below for walkthroughs and the appropriate download.

Although we know that Nokia had a wince-inducing first quarter, the company was hush hush on how many of its Windows Phone-packing Lumias had shipped out. We still don't have official word, but IDC estimates that Nokia delivered 2.2 million of the devices to shops (not necessarily to customers) between January and March. If the total is accurate, Lumias would represent less than a fifth of the 11.9 million smartphones shipped by Espoo over the season and wouldn't have Apple or Samsung quaking in their boots just yet. The research team is careful to warn that the spring and summer will be the real litmus tests: a healthy Lumia 900 launch in the US could easily spike that number. Our one certainty is that Nokia will still have to sell a lot of 808 PureViews if it wants to keep its smartphone sales humming in the short term.

The legal drama surrounding Apple's 4G labeling of some iPad models in Australia might be coming to an end. The Australian reports that Apple has agreed to pay $2.25 million to settle claims that the company's use of the term "Wi-Fi + 4G" was misleading because the tablet doesn't work with the country's 4G networks. Apple already offered to provide refunds to consumers who felt deceived by the labeling. The company also renamed the aforementioned model to "iPad WiFi + Cellular" in several territories. Apple hasn't quite made it across the finish line, however -- the settlement still requires court approval before it can be finalized and the Judge has adjourned the case until Wednesday to gather more information.

Nokia and RIM, the two former leaders in the early smartphone market, are now basically at the end stage of their downward spirals. This is an opportunity for Microsoft, which wants to make some inroads in the smartphone market, assuming Microsoft it can play its cards right. The question is which firm is worth more. Both have their values, especially in the patent areas. In terms of just smartphones, Microsoft would probably gain more from RIM, because it could integrate BlackBerry Enterprise Server into its own server products. Nokia, though, is a much older player and probably has a lot more of a patent portfolio. The question then becomes which is an easier purchase. Nokia is a 150-year-old storied company. The Finns may not be too keen to let it go to an American firm. There is the distinct possibility Microsoft acquires both firms and keeps the best of both worlds for hardware. But where does that leave OEM partners like LG, HTC and ZTE?"

[Christina] has been working on a project she calls Magenta to put Darwin/BSD on top of Linux. What does that mean? Well, hopefully it’s the first step towards running iPhone/iPad apps on a Linux machine.
Before you get too excited, there are a few caveats; Magenta only works on ARMv7 platforms, none of the fancy iOS frameworks are included, and it’s currently impossible to run iOS apps with this build. Think of this project as a very, very early version of Wine. If you’d like to take Magenta for a spin, [Christina] put the source uphere.
Although [Christina]‘s project is entirely useless for anyone wanting Siri on their Android phone, it’s possible to add all those fancy iOS frameworks to Magenta and create an open source OS able to run iPhone apps.
We really have to admire [Christina]‘s work on this. It’s an amazingly impressive project, and her final goal of recreating the iOS stack would be a boon to the jailbreaking scene. Cue the sound of millions of iPhone clones marching out of China…

At the beginning of the school last year, [Ryan] needed to come up with a project for his master’s thesis. Having a bachelor’s in mech. engineering and doing his graduate work in software engineering allowed [Ryan] to do something really cool for his thesis; he decided to turn an iPhone into an autonomous robot with live video streaming, remote control, and object detection.
[Ryan] started building his ArduiPhone last October with an Arduino, motor shield, and a Magician Chassis. The software is based on an iPhone network programming tutorial that opens a socket connection to a desktop PC and relays commands to an Arduino serial port.
One of the more interesting features of [Ryan]‘s ArduiPhone is the ability to stream video directly from the phone to a Java application. Instead of FaceTime, [Ryan] streams videos by converting an image from the front-facing iPhone camera to a byte array, sends it over the network, and decodes the image in a Java app. It’s low-level stuff, but the video quality is excellent and something we’ll probably be seeing more of in the future.

Mame4droid Reloaded v1.6 (0.37b5) is released. MAME4droid Reloaded emulates arcade games supported by original MAME. This MAME4droid version is targeted to Dual-Core devices (1GHz and 512MB RAM minimum), because it is based on a high specs 2009 PC MAME build. Anyway don't expect arcade games of the 90 to work at full speed. With some games that are really bad optimized (like outrun or mk series) you will need at least a 1.5 ghz dual-core device. This is related to MAME build used, since it is targeted to high specs PC's as i said before. This version doesn't have an uml back end ARM dynamic recompiler, which means drivers based on high specs arcade CPUs won't be playable (it has not sense since this games will be slow in any case).
Mame4droid Reloaded Features:
- Save States
- Support for 2.1 and upper Android devices.
- Native support for Android Honeycomb tablets.
- Autorotate.
- HW Keys remapping.
- Touch Controller can be shown/hidden.
- Smooth image.
- Overlay Filters, scalines, CRT..
- Digital or Analog touch selectable.
- Animated touch stick or DPAD.
- Button Layout customizable control.
- iON's iCade and iCP (as iCade mode) external controllers supported.
- Wiimote support using WiiCrotroller Market app.
- Tilt Sensor as left/right.
- 1 to 6 buttons optionally shown.
- Options for video aspect ratio, scaling, rotate.
Mame4droid Reloaded v1.6 (0.37b5) Changelog:
MAME4droid 1.6 (0.37b5) prerelease MIPS test build ...

200 new features rolled up in new version of the platform.
As usual, Apple took the stage at WWDC to reveal the goodies in its new OS update, which will be available to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users this Autumn as a free software update.
There were no real fireworks, but enough to keep the pressure on rivals and spook a few independent firms with updates that encroach on incumbent territory.
So, for example, Apple also did the expected and booted out Google Maps. It replaced it with a new mapping solution with local listings for over 100m businesses integrated with Yelp.
Interestingly, the maps are updated with real-time crowdsourced data – all very alarming for location firms like Waze and Navmii, which base their apps on this model.
There was also a new Flyover feature with photo-realistic interactive 3D views.

Been wondering exactly which data service is replacing Google as Apple's map provider? According to these leaked screenshots (shown above) from the iOS 6 developer beta running on an iPhone 4S, it appears to be TomTom. The company is no stranger to iOS, as its navigation app and car kit have been available on the iPhone since 2009. On an interesting note, the maps application specifically mentions "data from TomTom, others," which means there may be other suppliers that aren't getting called out by name. We'll keep you posted as we hear more what's going on behind-the-scenes.
Update: TomTom has independently confirmed to us that it indeed "has signed a global agreement with Apple for maps and related information."

And we're still not done. A new iPad case has managed to sneak onto the Apple Store's online shelves, and it'll protect your precious slab on both the back and front. The Smart Case appears to augment last year's Smart Cover with an additional (polyurethane hardshell) coating for the back of your iPad. Priced at just under $50, the case fits both second and third-generation iPads and will arrive in six different color options. And yes, you can still get that ever-pressing message engraved onto it too.

We didn't get a ton of details on this one during the keynote, but Apple has announced a new Guided Access feature for iOS that promises to let folks limit what sort of input their devices are able to respond to. Some examples given by Apple are a parent of an autistic child who could disable on-screen controls so they don't accidentally exit an app, a teacher who could prevent students from exiting a test app, or museums who could keep folks locked in to their own display apps. That includes the ability to confine touch input to certain parts of the screen, in addition to disabling the home button or touch input altogether.

From airline and train boarding passes to concert tickets, we've seen a variety of tix make their way into the digital realm at venues around the world. With today's announcement of Passbook, the hard copy credential may soon be a thing of the past. Speaking on stage at Apple's WWDC keynote, VP of iOS Software Scott Forstall demonstrated the feature with United boarding passes, Fandango movie tickets and a Starbucks gift card. While none of these examples are making their premiere debut, Passbook will certainly make the QR-code-based stubs more user-friendly, while also increasing awareness among folks who continue to opt for paper while doubting the usability and authenticity of a digital counterpart. Passbook is also location aware, bringing up a Starbucks card as you approach a shop, for example. You can also get updates related to your stored credentials, such as a gate change announcement with a pending United boarding pass. The feature will come bundled with iOS 6, set to launch this fall.

The string of iOS 6 updates has brought one of the more heavily requested social networking features: Facebook integration. You can share from core apps like Maps, Photos and Safari, but it's woven even more deeply than Twitter was in iOS 5: you can use Siri to make your commands, and there's now a public API for Facebook so that other apps can do the same. The App Store gets its own share of integration, with app recommendations based on what friends are using, and contact syncing now makes sure your social network is all lined up. Best of all, the Facebook integration is coming to Macs as well -- so you'll have a consistent experience no matter what device you're on.

Ever get annoyed when your sleep is interrupted by a call or message coming into your phone? As we were hoping, iOS 6 is getting the badly needed Do Not Disturb feature we first saw in Mountain Lion last month. The idea is simple: when activated, push notifications will be automatically muted and the screen won't light up. A whitelist option will be available so you won't miss important callers; you can also set up the feature so that if a person calls you more than once, the phone will allow the call to come through. This is an exciting option for anyone who is tired of waking up to a notification only to find out it's their turn in Draw Something.

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.
E3-Week Highlights
Last week’s E3, while plenty of fun, left little time for keeping an eye on the App Store. But rest assured your resident mobile game expert is back, well-rested and once again ready to bring you the full scoop on all of the day’s App Store hotness. In the interest of starting fresh, today’s update will strictly focus on today’s news only. Anyone interested in what happened in iOS-land last week should check out highlights like Ichi, Catapult King,Uplink and Adventure Time.
Game Debuts
Euro Soccer – ($1.99)
First Touch Publishing is back with another serious soccer sim. The company seems determined to give bigger studios like EA and Gameloft a run for their money when it comes to full-featured soccer on-the-go.
Cardinal Quest – ($1.99)
Cardinal Quest is a classic dungeon crawler with a great old school style and difficulty. Roguelikes are making a big comeback in part thanks to polished indie efforts like this.
Probe the Humans – (Free)
Probe the Humans gives gamers the opportunity to abduct humans, animals, coins and whatever else they can grab. Unlockable space ships and plenty of other power-ups give this one plenty of replay value.
Price Drops
Cubis Creatures – (Free)
Two months after its App Store debut, the latest edition of the popular 3D puzzle Cubis franchise can now be nabbed for free for a limited time.
Boost 2 - (Free)
This popular 3D racer has once again gone free for a limited time. Don’t miss it.
Chuzzle – ($0.99)
Chuzzle, one of Popcap’s original hits, is now available for $0.99 for a limited time. This furry puzzler might not be a home run like some of the company’s later efforts, but it’s still a cute and enjoyable action puzzle game.

That's three quarters of all Stateside tablet users.
The data from eMarketer shows Apple's iPad is still the top dog of the tablet world, as American iPad users will rise to 53.2 million this year. That's a 90 per cent increase – as existing users upgrade, and new buyers join Apple.
That said, the growth is down from the 143.9 per cent in 2011, and it's set to decline in coming years, with usage rising by under 12 per cent in 2015 when more than a third of the US web users will own one of the devices.
In comparison, the tablet market on the whole is set to reach 29.1 per cent of internet users by the end of 2012.
Interestingly, the fastest-growing tablet users will be among under-12s and over-65s, which is due to the lack of adoption seen from the generations thus far.
Results show that 54 per cent of this year's tablet use will come from men, with Asians the most likely to use the tech at 26.2 per cent.

Skewed by a whopping 78.4 per cent in Spain.
The latest sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows Android growing its European market dominance rapidly.
Its share of the big five countries - UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany - leapt from 38.8 per cent in May 2011 to 60 per cent in May 2012.
Of course, the performance in the individual countries varied pretty broadly. Lowest is Italy at 47.4, while Spain hit 78.4 per cent
And in the region's biggest market, the UK, Android retained its number one position in the latest 12 weeks of sales with a 52.5 per cent share, up from 48.3 per cent a year ago.
Within the UK, Samsung took 56 per cent of device sales while HTC secured 29 per cent.

Analytics firm Flurry recently posted a report comparing the new projects being undertaken by developers for mobile apps on Android and iOS. According to their data, significantly more projects are started for iOS than for Android. The gap has been slowly shrinking over the past few quarters, but it's still bigger than it was a year ago. "For every 10 apps that developers build, roughly 7 are for iOS. While Google made some gains in Q1 2012, edging up to over 30% for the first time in a year, we believe this is largely due to seasonality, as Apple traditionally experiences a spike in developer support leading up to the holiday season." The iPad's dominance of the tablet market is one of several reasons for the gap. "In Flurry’s estimation, the fragmentation of the Android platform is increasing the cost and complexity of app development, perhaps curbing third-party investment in software."

Google's SVP of mobile Andy Rubin releases figure after squashing rumours of his resignation
[h=3]Google[/h]
Android device activations have now passed 900,000 a day.
The new figure was released on Twitter by Google's senior vice president of mobile, Andy Rubin, who founded Android Inc. in 2003 - Google acquired the company in 2005. Rubin was responding to rumours that he was about to resign from his position at Google.
"No plans to leave Google. Oh, and just for meme completeness -- there are over 900,000 android devices activated each day," he said.

So you're eagerly awaiting iOS 6 in the fall, but you'd like to know just how many features you'll end up skipping if you cling on to your existing iPad, iPhone or iPod touch for one more generation. Apple has gone to the trouble of alerting would-be upgraders just what features they'll get when they check for the update this fall, and we've compiled it in a chart for an at-a-glance view of what you'll need. The short answer: you'll want an iPhone 4S if you're craving every iOS 6 feature. Some feature gaps are defined by obvious differences like the absence of cellular hardware, but the performance limits of the iPhone 3GS or fourth-generation iPod touch turn their upgrades into a patchwork. There's also a pair of questions about iPod touch support and whether or not "iPhone 4 or later" explicitly rules out the media player; we'll update should we know more. Either way, it's evident that Apple is bending over backwards to support burgeoning markets, but also that anyone who bought in 2010 or earlier is feeling the pressure to pick up something new -- especially original iPad owners, who can't upgrade at all.

We'd been wondering where Rockstar Games' promised Android version of Max Payne Mobile had gone after missing its original April release window, but the company has at last narrowed down a release for its third-person revenge shooter on Google's OS. The game swings by Google Play on June 14th, although the nature of the platform means Rockstar is only vowing support for certain phones and tablets. You'll find the whole list at the source link, but it's safe to say that you'll want a higher-end Android device made during the past year by Acer, ASUS, HTC, LG, Medion, Motorola, Samsung, Sony or Toshiba. Thankfully, the $2.99 price will cover either form factor and gives you every excuse to take down Valkyr-peddling thugs on New York City's streets.

Nokia unveiled its 808 PureView at the Mobile World Congress in February, a Symbian-based smartphone that comes with a whopping 41 megapixel camera.
It seemed strange that the Finnish OEM launched such a high-spec device on the fading Symbian OS in the first place, but US president Chris Webb now claims the firm is committed to adding the technology to future WinPho-powered Lumia devices.
The exec was tight-lipped on when the roll out will take place, but added: "We're working with Microsoft to make sure their platform supports the broad set of things we want to do with the PureView imaging."

No R-rated mobile content on their watch.
American operator AT&T and researcher GfK are behind the data, which shows an overwhelming 90 per cent of eight-17 year-olds are happy for parents to set rules on their mobile activity, though just two-thirds of parents have implemented such restrictions.
It shows that the laidback 24 per cent that haven't enforced parental guidance are missing a trick, as 39 per cent of 12-14 year olds know someone that's been sent a sext – text of a sexual nature. This leaps to 53 per cent for 15-17 year olds.
Meanwhile, almost one-fifth of eight-11 year olds have been on the receiving end of text-based bullying, and kids say mobile safety isn't high on parents' priority lists.
Betsy Landers, National PTA president, said: "Today's parent should be aware of today's technology and how it can affect their children. Being an engaged parent includes having a conversation about wireless safety with their children as they grow up."
The results show the average age for a child to receive their first mobile is 12.1, with the age creeping to 13.8 for smartphones.

Will enable parents to prevent inappropriate content access via apps and mobile web.
Mobile and online security provider AVG's Family Safety platform is a web browser that blocks explicit content, malware, scams and fraud, sparing children from accessing it.
AVG has now expanded the service as an app to iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone devices, as the number of kids accessing their own mobiles, as well as their parents', continues to grow.
After parents have downloaded the app, they need to link it to the Family Safety account, where they can control the filtering options and expand it from PC to mobile.
JR Smith, CEO of AVG Technologies, said: "With people increasingly using mobile devices to access social networks and browse the web, protecting these devices against online threats has become vital.
"Online scams and attacks are on the rise and can occur on any platform with access to the web. AVG aims to protect its users wherever they go. With AVG Family Safety for iOS and Windows Phone, we provide our users the peace of mind that they and their children are protected against online threats on these mobile platforms too."

It could be on the cards as Amazon reportedly prepares for an international Appstore release.
Amazon's Appstore is a strict Android-only arena. It was launched in March last year in an attempt to build revenues and engagement between its Kindle device users, all of which run on Google's OS, as well as general Android device owners.
However, despite passing 31,000 apps on the platform, it's only available in the the US, along with its Kindle Fire tablet, which received mass adoption in Q4 when it sold around four million devices, though sales fell to a dismal 700,000 in Q1.
Now, AllThingsD reports the Amazon Appstore is due for a European launch this summer, with an official announcement due in weeks. If true, an international Kindle Fire launch could follow, and likely stimulate sales.
The appstore roll out would also provide developers with a better chance to monetise their apps, and potentially generate more downloads, ultimately driving more interest from other third parties, and in turn, consumers.

Finnish mobile phone company Nokia has announced a fresh round of redundancies with some 10,000 workers facing the sack.
The move brings the total amount of staff laid off by the company since the appointment of current chief executive Stephen Elop in September 2010 to 40,000.
"These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia's long-term competitive strength," Elop stated.
“We do not make plans that may impact our employees lightly, and as a company we will work tirelessly to ensure that those at risk are offered the support, options and advice necessary to find new opportunities."
The company is also closing the last of its Finnish production plants, although it will continue to operate an R&D facility in its home country. R&D sites in Germany and Canada will close their doors, however.
Also closing is Nokia’s luxury handset maker Vertu, which produces flashy jewel-clad handsets costing as much as $300,000.
The net result of these moves – which are expected to be completed by the end of 2013 – is a core operating cost saving of around $3.8bn per year.
Nokia’s share price has tumbled by over 70 per cent since February 2011.

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.
Game Debuts
Mutant Storm – ($2.99)
Popular XBLA & PC twin-stick shooter Mutant Storm is now available on the App Store courtesy of Crescent Moon Games.

Babel Rising 3D – ($2.99)
Once again gamers can step into God’s sandals and punish those heathen Babylonians for constructing towers of Babel. As its name implies, this sequel’s most notable change is the shift from 2D to 3D.

Suspect in Sight – ($0.99)
Why should villains get to have all the fun? Suspect in Sight lets gamers chase down criminals with extreme prejudice in their own police helicopter.

WarGames: WOPR – ($0.99)
Children of the 70s and 80s: pay attention! I have no idea whether WarGames: WOPR is any good or not. It’s just incredible and a little ridiculous that the game exists at all. The title is fully licensed from the 29-year-old(!!) Matthew Broderick film, and seems to take full advantage of said license.
Eager Beaver – ($0.99)
Eager Beaver looks like another friendly 2D physics puzzler from Chillingo. Build a beaver dam out of anything and everything you can get your hands on.

Pocket Planes – (Free)
Nimblebit’s Tiny Tower follow-up Pocket Planes is finally available! Join the IGN crew &read our first impressions from earlier this morning.

Disco Kitten – ($0.99)
Disco Kitten proves that Chillingo publishes more than just physics puzzlers. It’s weird. It’s musical. And it stars an adorable robot kitty. Cute!

realMyst – ($6.99)
Cyan Worlds has been repackaging and rereleasing Myst for nearly 20 years. iPad owners can now get in on the action with realMyst, a fully 3D recreation of the original game’s static pre-rendered images.

Price Drops
Plants vs. Zombies – ($0.99)
If you’ve somehow managed to never experience PopCap’s goofy lane defense title, grab it now! It’s on sale for just $0.99 for a limited time.
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing – (Free)
Sega has once again given games the opportunity to grab its mascot kart racer free-of-charge. Nice!
Spy Mouse – (Free)
Firemint’s cute top-down stealth-puzzler has gone free for the first time ever! iPad owners can also get in on this free offer.
Flight Control Rocket – (Free)
EA’s Flight Control follow-up is also free for a limited time. Note that the title still features an aggressive in-app purchase strategy.
Updates
Total War Battles: Shogun
Several new skirmish battles, legendary units, Facebook & Twitter integration and more have been added to Creative Assembly’s Total War RTS.

Addressable market has grown to over 125 million people playing mobile games in the US and UK
[h=3]PopCap Games[/h]www.popcap.com
Smartphone gaming and tablet gaming is on the rise, as nearly half of all adults in the US and UK are now playing games on mobile, according to a new survey conducted by Information Solutions Group on behalf of PopCap. It is estimated that there is now an addressable market of more than 125 million people playing mobile games in the US and UK.
In fact, almost half (46 percent) of all video game time is spent on a mobile device, the survey indicated. Phones and computers were found to be the most common game devices (33 percent and 32 percent, respectively), whereas dedicated consoles were only at 18 percent.
"Mobile games continue to vie with social games as the hottest sector of the video game industry and that trend shows no sign of waning," stated Dennis Ryan, VP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap. "Smartphone adoption continues apace and tablet adoption has added considerable fuel to the fire. Even more important, consumers are embracing the shift toward freemium games and other add-on game content purchases, driving the dramatic and rapid shift in the forms of monetization being used by developers and publishers."
Further data from the survey shows that more than 4 in 10 adults had played at least one mobile game in the past month, which is a sizable increase of 29 percent compared to a year ago. And tablets are generating lots of interest, as the iPad, Kindle and other tablet devices have brought approximately 11 million new mobile gamers into the fold in the past 12 months. 36 percent of mobile gamers now own a tablet and 74 percent of the tablet gamers did not play mobile games previously.
The free-to-play sector, as Ryan alluded to, is definitely helping to drive mobile. Among the reasons cited for the increase in mobile gameplay are the availability of more free games (70 percent), acquisition of a new phone with better gaming capabilities (47 percent) and purchase of a tablet (25 percent).
That said, spending data reveals that half (51 percent) of mobile gamers made mobile game-related purchases in the past year. 62 percent was directly for games, while four out of every ten dollars spent was for additional content and/or in-game currency. Interestingly, tablet gamers are more likely to spend, as mobile gamers who only play on a tablet spent 1.5 times more on games and game content than those who only play mobile games on a phone ($25.47 versus $16.68).

Based on the amount of effort poured into iOS 6 in order to tailor it for users in China, one thing's obvious: it's a nation grasping for smartphones. Apple's seeing huge, huge upticks in spending from Chinese customers, and Nokia's sure hoping it sees similar. In the midst of untold turmoil, Nokia is sprinkling in a bit of positive news this morning -- news that the Lumia 900 is now shipping in China. The 900 marks the fifth Lumia smartphone to ship in the nation of 900 million mobile phone users, with white, black and cyan versions to choose from. Outside of the basic specifications, the Chinese 900 will also come preloaded with nation-specific apps such as Sina Weibo, QQ IM, Baidu Search and Alipay. Oh, and if a phone wasn't enough, the Nokia Reaction Bluetooth Headset is also launching there today, enabling you to finally make use of that NFC module. The Lumia 900 hardware will sell for RMB 4599 ($721) in Nokia's flagship store, Nokia brand stores and the nation's "top electronics chain stores."

Taking phone photography seriously is certainly possible. Short of tacking on a slightly ludicrous add-on case, however, you're normally stuck with whatever lens the phone designer deems fit. Unless Apple uses technology from a very out-of-left-field patent application, that is. The invention would make an iPhone's back panel removable so that owners could swap out lenses like they would with a DSLR or amirrorless camera. Apple has even raised the possibility of a panel with two lenses built-in at opposite corners: to switch to a telephoto lens or a different filter, you'd only need to flip the panel around to use the additional glass. It's all quite wild, although it's for that reason that the patent might never get used. The company isn't a fan of replaceable parts, after all. But if the photographer for your future wedding shows up with nothing but an iPhone and a bag full of back plates, you'll know why -- even if you're still left scratching your head.

Put down War and Peace for just a second. If you're a Kindle user on iOS, Android or Amazon's Cloud Reader, a new update brings children's books, graphic novels and comics to your virtual library. The children's titles will support Kindle Text Pop-Up to help boost the size of the words and spare your little one's eyes. Comics, however, get the Kindle Panel View treatment -- on supported titles -- that'll keep that analog format's frame-by-frame style. An iOS-only tweak adds title- and author search of your library, plus smaller margins on the iPad. Android tablet owners and Cloud Readers, on the other hand, can now enjoy a two-page view. The updates are available starting today, so fold the corner on the source links, or head straight to the next chapter.

Nokia made mention of a broader Lumia phone range coming as part of its major strategy shakeup, but it wasn't clear just where the Windows Phone line was heading. During a call discussing the nitty-gritty of the strategy shift, though, the company made clear that it was swinging towards devices cheaper than theLumia 610 -- much cheaper. Plans had already been underway to drop the price lower, but Microsoft had given "specific support" to get to lower prices than Nokia "had a sight to." Executives dropped hints that "important catalyst dates" in Microsoft's Windows Phone timetable were instrumental to lower prices; we've got a few ideas as to what Nokia might mean. The cost-cutting was considered vital to competing with the very low-cost Android smartphones that thrive in countries like China, as Nokia wasn't about to throw a mix of basic Symbian phones and Windows Phones against a pure smartphone platform like Google's. Along with narrowing the focus in product launches to fewer countries but more ambitious plans -- think of AT&T's Lumia 900 launch shebang -- Finland's phone giant thinks it can go toe-to-toe with Android-using rivals that can often compete solely on cost.

Street Fighter X Tekken met with a troubled launch and a cool reception on PS3 and Xbox 360. Maybe it'll do better ... on iPhone? Capcom announced today that Street Fighter X Tekken is due for release on iOS this summer.
According to Capcom, the mobile version includes "brand new modes and a brand new take on the tag team mechanic." So far the only confirmed characters are Ryu, Chun-Li, Kazuya, and Nina, so in its current state that "brand new take" only includes "being able to choose fewer people for your tag team." We're confident Capcom will announce more characters before the game's release, and if SF4 on iOS is any indication, add more characters in free updates.

The Google platform accounted for 381m of them.
The data and infographics come from madvertise's latest 'madreport'. The European mobile ad firm partnered app search specialist, Xyologic for the research, which covers download trends across the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy - the EU5.
iPhone and Android app downloads across the EU5 reached 603 million in Q1, rising from 552 million in Q4.
Android was the star of the show, growing from 262 million to 381 million between Q4 and Q1, while iPhone fell from 290 million to 222 million.
In fact, Android was the leader for app downloads across all countries, and the firm's claim the Google OS is the best way for developers to get their apps noticed.
Check out the infographics below to see what apps the UK favoured during Q1.

125m adults in the UK and US are playing games on a phone.
EA division, PopCap Games, says the 125 million total is equivalent to 44 per cent of people, up from 29 per cent last year.
It said tablets are driving the change, with nine per cent of owners becoming mobile gamers. Indeed, the iPad and Kindle are responsible for 11 million newbies in the past year.
An impressive 46 per cent of all video game time is spent on a mobile device, with phones securing 33 per cent of gameplay, compared to consoles, which took 18 per cent.
Unsurprisingly, 57 per cent of dual device owners play daily, compared to 41 per cent of single device owners, while 56 per cent of dual players are male.
70 per cent have taken up mobile gaming due to the rising freemium format, while 47 per cent cite a better phone with gaming functions, and a quarter say it's due to a tablet purchase.

The launch of the Orange San Diego, the first handset using an Intel Atom processor, marks a big milestone for the chipmaker: it's finally in the smartphone market. But does the market need Intel at all? ... Intel's scale and the reach of its other divisions gives [Mike] Bell's smartphone unit a boost; for example, it can reuse code optimizations for Atom done by the desktop team. ... Even so, the smartphone team has got a tough job on its hands — but it's one Intel has to tackle, according to Carolina Milanesi, mobile analyst at Gartner. 'This is certainly an attack strategy for Intel. The smartphone market is so large now that they need a piece of the pie,' she said. But will consumers care whether their handset runs on an Intel chip? Bell conceded that aside from the tech-savvy, most people probably don't know which chip is inside their phone. It's likely, given the lack of advertising on this, that most probably don't care — making Intel's job even harder."

Dictionary.com defines an anachronism as "something or someone that is not in its correct historical or chronological time, especially a thing or person that belongs to an earlier time." A steam-powered car on an interstate highway, for instance, would be an anachronism. Similarly, playing a game that dramatically pre-dates the technology you're playing it on is delightfully anachronistic.
Case in point, 1987's Final Fantasy is now available for Windows Phone. The $6.99 app works on Windows Phone devices running Mango or newer and supports four languages: English, French, Chinese and Japanese. It also allows ancient cave-people like the Joystiq staff to reflect on how far technology has come, and gives young whippersnappers a chance to impress their friends by pretending to remember a game that came out before they were born.

As far as video games go, it doesn't get much simpler than Pong -- two paddles, one ball, no complications. A classic, to be sure, but definitely not the flashiest game when pitted against the averagesmartphone title -- maybe that's why Atari is asking indie developers to jazz it up. Yes, the Pong Indie Developer Challenge is in full swing, and Atari has pared down some 90-odd submissions to mere 15. Not familiar with the contest? Here's a quick refresh: Atari is looking for indie developers to re-imagine Pong for iOS as a fun, original, visually interesting and overtly marketable title. The stakes? Winners can score up to $100,000 and a publishing contract with Atari. Many of the semi-finalists' redesigns are as simple as adding multitouch gestures or bending the traditionally square playing field into a more circular court, but a few ambitious developers mixed it up with 3D playing fields, anthropomorphic paddles or augmented reality multiplayer. Check out Mashable's collection of contestant trailers at the link below for a look at the Pong of tomorrow. As for us? We're still pretty pleased with yesterday's model.

AOC has a bit of a long-term memory issue: it claims the Aire iPlay E2343Fi is the first computer monitor to have a built-in iPhone and iPod docking station. Nope. But don't let that deter you from checking out the new 23-inch LCD, whose cradle in the base will both keep your Apple gear topped up as well as play movies and music through the display. The 10-watt speakers won't exactly bring the house down, though they will let you take the headphones off. As an actual computer display, it's a typical TN-based panel with a 1080p resolution, a quick 2ms pixel response time and a boldly claimed 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Those who find a separate dock or (gasp) wires too much can officially spend $280 for an Aire iPlay of their own today; Amazon and other shops have already knocked the price down to a more palpable $230.

For over 10 years, the desktop and mobile graphics space has been dominated by two players: Nvidia and AMD/ATI. After 3dfx collapsed, there was a brief period of time when it looked as though Imagination Technologies might establish itself as a third option. Ultimately, that didn't happen — the company's tile-based rendering solution, Kyro, failed to gain mass-market support and faded after two generations. Now, there's a flurry of evidence to suggest that Imagination Technologies plans to re-enter PC market, but from the opposite direction. Rather than building expensive discrete solutions, IT is focused on deploying GPUs that can challenge Nvidia and AMD solutions in tablets, mobile phones, and possibly netbooks. Over the past two weeks, Imagination Technologies has announced new, higher-end versions of its Power VR Series 6 GPU, claiming that the new Power VR G6230 and G6430 go '"all out," adding incremental extra area for maximum performance whilst minimising power consumption.' There's a new ray-tracing SDK out and a post discussing how PowerVR is utilizing GPU Compute and OpenCL to offload and accelerate CPU-centric tasks."Update: 06/17 17:53 GMT by T : Related: An anonymous reader adds a link to a new project from the FSF to reverse engineer the PowerVR SGX

Samsung and Sony among the only smartphone OEMs to achieve growth in Q1.
New IDC data says smartphone shipments increased 41 per cent year-on-year between Q1 2011 and Q1 2012, reaching 144.6 million.
However, most OEMs have failed to benefit from the boom, with Samsung and Sony the only two firms to achieve an increase in demand on Q4.
Nokia has a huge mountain to climb, with sales of its Symbian-powered devices falling 40 per cent. ABI senior analyst Michael Morgan said: "At this point in the year, Nokia will have to grow its Windows Phone business 5,000 per cent in 2012 just to offset its declines in Symbian shipments."
Meanwhile, troubled RIM had a 20 per cent plummet to its shipments on Q4.
North America and Western Europe are on course for a 50 per cent smartphone penetration, and IDC reckons firms should look to build on growing regions like China - world's largest smartphone market - which had an 80 per cent shipment growth.

Love your iPad, but hate Safari? Mozilla's Alex Limi can relate, it's "a pretty miserable experience," he says. So what's he doing about it? Building a replacement, of course. In a recent presentation showing the fruits of the Mozilla Product Design Strategy team's labors, Limi offered a glimpse at Junior, an iPad browser that hopes to redefine how we view the internet on tablets. The prototype browser eschews the traditional address bar / tab layout in favor of a minimalistic, full screen experience, flanked by only two obvious toggles -- a back button, and a plus symbol that opens a menu containing favorites, recent pages and a URL / search bar. Other common options such as reload, forward and print are hidden away, but accessible. The idea is a simple browsing experience that's more fun, engaging and ergonomic. "It's very simple," Limi summarizes, "it's a browser." He stresses that Junior is still just a prototype, albeit a compelling one. Interested? Check out Limi's full product design presentation at the source link below.

Over on the 68kmla forums, a website dedicated to old Macs built before 1994, [zydeco] released his Android port of Mini vMac, a Macintosh Plus emulator that puts the power of a Motorola MC68000 processor and System 7 on any computer.
Unlike the original Macintosh, or the subsequent revision that bumped the RAM up to 512 kilobytes, the Mac Plus was actually useful. With the addition of a SCSI port and support for 4 Megabytes of RAM, it’s not only possible to browse the Internet, but also act as a server. There’s a reason [Sprite_tm] chose to rebuild one of these classic, all-in-one machines to act as a home server; they really do epitomize the elegant computers from a more civilized age.
68kmla user [FlyingToaster] even went so far as to put a Mac Plus in his nook touch. With this, he’s got a full-blown installation of System 7 running on an e-ink screen, complete with Lemmings, Gauntlet, and Tetris.
It should be possible to plug this emulated box into the Internet. Unfortunately, experience tells us it won’t be a very pleasant browsing experience outsideHackaday’s retro edition.

You know how heroin addicts can go to methadone clinics to stave off cravings? Well, Zynga's new iOS app is kinda like that, but for Reno grannies that blow their Social Security benefits on the one armed bandit.
Zynga Slots is now available for free on the App Store, touting various improvements over real-world slots, such as the fact that losing your life's savings is dramatically less probable. Players can invite their friends in true Zynga fashion, which increases the Jackpot payout of their own machines. The more you play, the higher you level, which in turn unlocks Zynga-themed machines with higher betting limits and rewards.

Touting the "world's fastest mobile memory card" moniker,SanDisk has unveiled the Extreme Pro microSDHC line of storage add-ons for your smartphone or tablet. The outfit is advertising 95MB/s read and 90MB/s write speeds for the UHS Class 1memory cards -- clocking in a bit faster than Samsung's Ultra High Speed offerings for LTE devices. The cards are now available in either 8GB or 16GB capacities and will hit your wallet for $59.99 or $99.99, depending on your preference. Naturally, you'll want to make sure that your device is compatible with the duo before pulling the trigger, which can be done via the source link below.

If one of the aims of the Raspberry Pi was to embody the "do-it-yourself" ethos, then it's already succeeded. Annoyed at the wait for the education-friendly board to arrive, the anonymous creator of the Gooseberry decided to build their own. Looking reasonably similar to its inspiration, it's packing a 1GHzAllWinner CPU, 400MHz Mali GPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. It's rumoured to have a bendy display. But can it turn the heads of iPhone users?
Samsung has only just released its flagship Galaxy S III device, butMK Business News reckons a Galaxy Note II 'phablet' is due in October.
That is, of course, the same month that long-standing rival Apple released its iPhone 4S in last year – and that many expect an iPhone 5 to make its debut.
The new Note is set to sport a flexible unbreakable plane (UBP) display, with advanced speeds and multi-tasking functions supported by a quad-core processor.
The current Note boasts a 5.3-inch screen, and Samsung is expected to play to its strengths by designing an even larger screen for its successor.
It's also set to come with a longer battery life and shock-resistant durability, with power generated by Jelly Bean, the next in line to the Android OS throne, following on from Ice Cream Sandwich.

The mobile tail is wagging the PC dog.
Microsoft unveiled its new phone OS earlier today and as expected the platform proves just how pervasive and victorious the mobile user interface has become.
The firm has already previewed the main desktop OS, Windows 8, and it included all the swipe-able tiles and draggable icons we've come to expect from a phone OS.
So few were surprised when WinPho 8 built on the template.
The phones will feature Microsoft's new "Metro" style, which is based around touchable live tiles that update constantly. The same template is used for Windows 8.
But, of course, this is more than a cosmetic similarity. It also helps developers because the two systems share much of the same code, making it easier to write for mobile, tablet and PC.

June 21st, 2012, 23:45 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has unveiled Windows Phone 8, promising "amazing games" and a host of new features for the next generation of its mobile operating system.
The company showed off WP8 at a developer and press event in San Francisco yesterday, and Joe Belfiore, Windows Phone product manager, has since posted the details on the Windows Phone blog.
WP8 is based on the technology core of Windows Phone 8, meaning smartphones and PCs will share networking, security, media and a file system. This, Belfiore says, "translates into better performance, more features, and new opportunities for app developers and hardware makers to innovate faster.
"Basing Windows Phone 8 on the Windows core will unleash a new wave of amazing apps and especially games."
Use of the Windows core means support for multicore processors, and devices will support 1280x768 and 1280x720 resolutions as well as MicroSD storage. Also included is support for Near Field Communication (NFC) allowing for easy sharing of documents and media with nearby devices, Internet Explorer 10, an improved digital wallet and a Nokia mapping service.
Microsoft's pitch to developers includes multitasking enhancements, and native code support for C and C++, streamlining cross-platform development and giving access to DirectX and middleware from the likes of Havok and Autodesk. At last, WP8 will introduce support for in-app purchases.
The system's start screen has been redesigned and will be fully customisable, a feature that will be rolled out to Windows Phone 7.5 devices in an update, dubbed Windows Phone 7.8. The other features, however, will only be available on new hardware, with the first WP8 handsets manufactured by Huawei, Samsung, HTC and, of course, Nokia.
So, is Microsoft making progress, or simply playing catch-up? While the close relationship with Windows is a step forward and access to DirectX and well-known middleware is intruiging, many of the new features are already available on other mobile operating systems.
The few games Belfiore mentions in his post do little to dispel the notion that Microsoft is doing more than keeping up with the Joneses, either. Gameloft is developing WP8 versions of Asphalt 7: Heat and NOVA 3; Nokia is working on bringing Zynga's Words With Friends and Draw Something to the platform. If WP8 is to succeed as a gaming platform it needs developers on board; how many will take a risk on a platform struggling to gain traction in a market dominated by iOS and Android is another matter entirely.

In the latest episode of XDA TV [Adam Outler] . At first this might sound comical, but the ever-increasing power of our handhelds makes it a pretty legitimate option. It’s hard to come up with concrete uses off the top of our head, but we’re sure there’s value in being able to pull the phone out of your pocket and serve some content.
The app BotBrew Basil makes the installation process nearly automatic. It gives you point-and-click access to install the lighttpd webserver package and set the daemon to run automatically at boot time. That’s it! Of course you need to supply your own HTML to be served. [Adam] used an HTML5 website template for this.
Next you also need a way to resolve the address of the phone. In this case it’s assigned a static IP from the router, and a dynamic DNS service provides a link that maps to the router’s location. But since these phones are running Linux (at least on the lowest level) it should be pretty easy to add a cron job which will send IP address updates to the service if you want to take the ‘webserver’ out in the world with you. You can watch the entire video after the break.
Ironically this is a big hardware upgrade for [Adam's] webserver. The previous version was running from an Evalbot.

You know what's happening next week in Android land? Yes, it's Google I/O, and we'll be there to give you the all the details, of course. Leading up to the event, Google's just given its Android developer site a fresh new "streamlined, simplified, and refocused" look. The redesign touches on three aspects of the app development lifecycle -- design, development and distribution -- in the hopes to entice developers to "build beautiful, powerful, successful apps". Want to find out more? Check out the gallery below and hit the break for the PR.

At the tail end of Microsoft's marathon Windows Phone Summit keynote, the company's own Kevin Gallo said the following: "Everyone in the Windows ecosystem benefits." He was waxing poetic about the myriad new features coming to the outfit's latest and greatest mobile operating system, and nothing about his quote was incorrect. Developers will adore the shared codebase. Users will adore the newadditions to the software framework. Carriers probably won't shun the opportunity to push yet another platform this holiday season. But the one word in there that sticks out most to me is this: "Windows."
I've been wrestling with the ecosystem issue for some time, but the gravity of it has never been so evident. Starting in 2008, one could argue that it stopped being purely about hardware. Purely about design. Purely about software. Purely about partnerships. Particularly when it came to smartphones. Slate-style handsets were en vogue years ago, with design changing extremely little and software becoming ever more of a factor. But it wasn't just software in the simplest sense -- it was how the software was interconnected to every other piece of the digital ecosystem. Phones were no longer standalone devices; they were simply the most convenient entry into a rabbit hole that Microsoft's going to have a tough time digging people out of. Allow me to explain.

Australia's federal court has fined Apple for "deliberately" misleading customers on local 4G capabilities of its latest iPad. The Cupertino-based company recently agreed to the terms, which included AU$2.29 million fine and a cool AU$300,000 in costs. Despite its 4G claims, Apple's new iPad can't connect with existing Antipodean next-generation phone networks, although it can hook up to US-based networks. Apple offered refunds for any customers that felt deceived and even adjusted its advertising to reflect its cellular capabilities, but the judge still deemed that the company had contravened Australia's consumer law in the ensuing confusion. Fortunately, Apple still has plenty left in the bank.

It's not quite App Store numbers, but the Windows Phone Marketplace has finally managed to break the six-digit published apps barrier (making good on the promise of all those app submissions) as Microsoft just announced that its mobile users now have over 100,000 apps to choose from. And, while it may not be as big a deal as multi-core processor support, a new Start screen, or turn-by-turn navigation, Microsoft just told of two more apps that'll be popping up in the Marketplace soon. That's right, a duo of Zynga's most popular titles, Words with Friends and Draw Something, are coming to Windows Phone. Congratulations, all you Microsoft mobile aficionados, your time-wasting can now reach levels previously seen only by your iOS and Android-toting friends.

The debate can now be laid to rest: devices currently running on Windows Phone 7.5 will not be on the receiving end of the long-awaited Apollo update (aka Windows Phone 8). But that doesn't mean those smartphones are at the end of the line. It's long been speculated that the reason Microsoft would want to restrict WP8 to new phones is primarily due to improvements in hardware support and the change in platform architecture, and this conjecture appears to be right on the money. After all, how can single-core devices with WVGA screens take advantage of multi-core and additional resolution support? That part makes sense, but that leaves the software side.
So here's the plan to ensure current Windows Phone users stay happy: a few software benefits will be included in WP8, and a hearty helping of these killer features (such as the new Start screen) will be available to legacy devices in the form of Windows Phone 7.8. There'll be support for three tile sizes, with the smallest being fingertip size (a quarter of the standard square). The update will be delivered directly to users, sidestepping carriers, and can be done over WiFi.
Update: While Microsoft was keen to announce that 7.x apps will run on Windows Phone 8, ZDNet has just confirmed, via a statement from Redmond, that apps built for the new platform won't be backwards compatible:"New applications compiled specifically for Windows Phone 8 will not be made available for Windows Phone 7.x devices." Driver takes to forums with complaints of white flames lashing across the device.
The Samsung Galaxy S III was launched last month, with pre-orders nearing ten million as buyers eagerly planned ahead to get their hands on the firm's flagship smartphone.
And while the demand may have been hot, a new report from sister title, PCR, says that the device is quite literally fiery.
A S III owner from Ireland, known as dillo2k10, took to forums to complain about the device, which 'exploded' when charging in their car, producing "white flame, sparks and a bang."
Carphone Warehouse apparently ignored its customers cries for help, though Samsung swooped in to save the day with a replacement, as well as additional treats.
Samsung, said: "There have been recent online posts displaying pictures of a Samsung Galaxy S3 that appears to have heat-related damage at the bottom of the device. Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question.

RIM plans to launch BlackBerry 10 on a touchscreen-only device.
RIM's physical QWERTY keypad and its email/BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) services are its two strongest assets that keep BlackBerry users coming back for more.
But forget about material buttons for now, because the first BlackBerry 10-powered phone to come out of RIM's locker won't have any, according to the Washington Post.
Next-generation OS, BB10, is considered to be RIM's make or break moment, following a terrible year, and RIM spokeswomen Rebecca Freiburger has said the debut device that sports the tech will be a touchscreen-only model.
The theory behind it makes sense, high-end Android and iOS touch-only devices are flying off of store shelves, so it will be interesting whether a supercharged offering from RIM will be able to repeat the success of its rivals.
It seems the BlackBerry maker sensed the initiative won't appeal to everyone though, and Freiburger added that BB10 devices with physical buttons will follow, but kept quiet on when any of the products will arrive.

Search giant briefly confirms version 4.1 will be named after the chewy candy.
It's been a big fortnight in the world of operating systems, with Apple revealing iOS 6, while Microsoft got in on the act with Windows Phone 8.
Not wanting to be left out in the cold, Google leaked an image of its forthcoming Galaxy Nexus phone on Google Play, describing it as 'The latest smartphone from Google, soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jell...'.
Droid-life managed to capture a screengrab of the image, which was just as well because the info has since been removed from the store.
The sudden appearance and vanishing act has the essence of a publicity stunt, but it's likely an official reveal will take place at the Google I/O event kicking off on June 27th.

You've likely read our review of Sony's Xperia Ion by now, so just consider this a reminder for those who've yet to peruse it. After nearly half a year from being christened at CES, the Ion can officially be purchased today in the US. Agreeing to a two-year commitment and laying out 100 smackers at AT&T -- or just 50 at Sony or Best Buy -- will net you this handset and its curious match-up of dated and up-to-date specs. On the one hand, this Xperia disappointingly runs Android Gingerbread (2.3.7) atop a dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S3 processor. However, it also packs a 4.6-inch HD Reality display (1280 x 720), 1,900mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, a 12MP (720p video) Exmor R sensor-loaded rear shooter, NFC and PlayStation certification. Hit up your local AT&T, Best Buy or Sony store to see if it feels better in your hand than it did in ours, or shop for it online at the source links below.

There's been a steady flow of betas for Firefox's Android offering and now the official Twitter account promises something "big" on the way next week, along with this image. The size declaration plus a lack of updated features (specifically Flash support) on tablets so far has us looking there for something new, although the image clearly shows a phone with the words "Fast. Smart. Safe." Also curious is an update for the Firefox beta on Android today which the Twitter account also admonishes those looking for an early preview of next week's news to check out. Finally, there's the timing, as Firefox's main browser rival Chrome has been rumored to be taking over as the standard bearer in Android Jelly Bean next week during Google I/O. Leave all relevant speculation or information in the comments below.

Lovecraftian horror turned counterculture icon Cthulhu will attempt to reclaim his ability to destroy all of mankind once again this Thursday, June 28, whenCthulhu Saves The World launches on OSX, iOS and Android, according toTouch Arcade.
Each version of the game will run you a smooth $1.99, making these releases $1 cheaper than the PC version on Steam and $1 more expensive than the original XBLIG jam. It's unclear whether the game will be a Universal iOS app, or if iPhone/iPad specific versions will be released at $1.99 each, though the game's classic JRPG-style interfaces should adapt well to touchscreen devices either way.
Launching on additional platforms has worked out well for Zeboyd in the past; it'll be interesting to see if the game's street cred translates to success in the indie-saturated mobile market.

We're going to ruin the fun for you, but it's in the service of announcing some other fun. The message above, obscured by reverse alphabetical cipher, reads:White and black spies resurface -(stop)- iPad -(stop)- iPhone -(stop)- iPod Touch -(stop)- online two players -(stop)- this summer -(stop)- this message will self destruct in five seconds -(stop)-
So, to translate that all the way into legible English, WB's Spy vs. Spy remakewill be released this summer on iOS, and will feature online multiplayer for two players. You can look forward to stealing your friends' important secrets, and planting bombs in their wall safes. But, like, in a way that it's totally all right to look forward to.

Performing better than England's penalty takers.
Orange's official tournament app is currently the chart topping sport app in four European countries on iTunes and Google Play stores, and is in the top five in 70 other territories.
Amazingly, one of these 70 countries is the US - traditionally the burial ground of 'soccer' apps.
The free app includes info and news features plus lots of rich media and social additions. These include a mobile fan kit, including "Photo Fun" which lets users digitally apply face paint to a photo and share it with friends, as well as geolocation functionality and augmented reality maps to find friends at matches.
Fans visiting Poland and Ukraine can also also use the built-in travel information to learn more about the cities they are visiting, information about the stadiums, get travel information, and find the official UEFA Fan Zones.
Premium users also have the option of purchasing video highlights.

Easy Phone Sync now free to anyone purchasing a Galaxy.
It might seem like a minor story, but this is a very astute move by Samsung. Why? Because most smartphone users invest so much time and money into their content that even of they fancy changing platforms, it's just too much of a hassle to do so.
Easy Phone Sync lets the new Galaxy owner transfer their music, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts and text messages from an iPhone to their new Android device in a few clicks.
They can continue to use iTunes software on their PC to manage their music, videos and podcasts and keep their Android device in sync with it.
But there are some obvious gaps. Only DRM free music can be moved, and obviously no iPhone apps can be switched either.
Simon Stanford, VP of telecommunications and networks at Samsung UK and Ireland, said: “We know that traditionally iPhone users have been reluctant to switch to an Android device because they couldn’t use iTunes to manage their content.

Apple quietly switched out a statement that claimed its Mac computers were completely immune to viruses with a less-forward statement: 'It's built to be safe.' The PR shift comes in the aftermath of the Flashback Trojan, which affected hundreds of thousands of Macs back in early April. From the article: 'Apple strives for perfection, but stating something is perfect when it isn't is ultimately bad for PR and company morale. Jobs used his reality distortion field to "rally the troops," so to speak, but "Mountain Lion" will ensure Apple can tout its closed, highly-secure operating system for the foreseeable future in a much more realistic sense. Just because a product isn't impervious to sickness doesn't mean it isn't "insanely great

The wait between iOS 6's unveiling and its planned fall release just got a little bit shorter, as Apple has just pushed out beta 2. If you're in the developer crowd that can try it out, don't expect any revelations: the primarily focus is on the bug fixes that nudge the software closer to a final release. As in past years, multiple additional betas are expected between now and the time the iOS 6 is ready to come to the general public, so there's likely still lots of room left for Apple to polish the release to a shine. Those paid up on their developer accounts can grab the update through the usual means and see just how much luster has been added since WWDC.

Korea's golden goose is on track to drop its 10 millionth Galaxy S III by July, according to Samsung mobile head Shin Jong-kyun. The expectation comes despite limited supply, fueled by a component shortage at the smartphone giant. Regardless of this notable shortcoming, Samsung has wasted no time getting its latest handset to market, and expects to deliver the 4.8-inch Galaxy to some 300 carriers in 147 countries by the end of next month, including all of the major UK carriers, along with AT&T, Sprint,T-Mobile and Verizon in the US. The sky-high figure is merely an estimate, however, so investors may want to stay tuned for the official announcement before uncorking the Dom. Full details are at the source link below.

API will give developers ability to integrate their apps with Snapdragon processing features.

* burst capture, which leverages zero shutter lag to photograph a stream of images

Another attempt to erase Google Maps from the memories of its iPhone users.
Apple will move into new territory with its iOS update, iOS 6, ditching long-running partner Google Maps in order for its own Apple Maps app, which will come as standard on the software.
Bloomberg reports that the iPhone version of the app will sport a Yelp-powered check-in feature, allowing users to broadcast their locations to friends, an option Foursquare and Facebook know is hugely popular.
Yelp allows its users to review businesses – trades, eateries, shops etc – while the mobile app already has a check-in function, and an integration to iPhones could potentially bring in millions of new users, threatening location-based rivals in turn.
A Raymond James & Associates analyst claims 40 per cent of Yelp traffic comes from the iOS app, noting how important the move could be.
Apple and Yelp declined to comment.

Eye-watering funds have been generated in five years.
Apple's iPhone was launched on June 29th 2007, and new data from Strategy Analytics says that the family of five – iPhone, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S – is responsible for revenues of $150 billion.
Meanwhile, more than 250 million iPhones have been shipped in the device's five year existence on the market.
Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said: "The iPhone portfolio has become a huge generator of cash and profit for Apple and it reaches its fifth birthday at the top of its game.
"However, there are emerging signs that the iPhone’s next five years could get tougher. Exec says the co-branded device will take aim at Amazon.
In the past, Google has partnered with Samsung and Motorola to release an official co-branded Google device, and Taiwan-based Asustek is the next in line to team with the Android creator for its first tablet.
But with the iPad trouncing all rivals time and time again, can the Google Asus tablet hope to attract Apple's consumers?
Possibly not, as Reuters reports an Asustek executive, that says the forthcoming tablet will focus its attempts to steal the Amazon Kindle Fire's thunder, rather than the iPad's.
Of course, said Fire thunder slowed in Q1, when sales fell to 700,000 from an impressive four million in Q4 – when the device was launched.
The exec, said: "It's targeting Amazon. The Kindle is based on Google's platform but with its own service, so Google has to launch its own service, too."

Mums and dads worry they have no control over sexts, cyber bullying and other threats.
Recent studies have shown children are likely to receive their first mobile phone at around 12-years-old, while a growing number of adults pacify those even younger with limited time on their own devices when completing errands.
Research from security provider AdaptiveMobile shows 55 per cent of UK parents think mobiles are the hardest devices to monitor, when compared to the likes of games consoles and laptops.
65 per cent worry that their kids are at risk from cyber bullying, sexting and unrestricted access to inappropriate content.
51 per cent admit they would like more control over their child's device, and a further 51 per cent would like to see who they're kids are talking to, while 52 per cent would like to know what they're looking at.
Gareth Maclachlan, COO and co-founder, AdaptiveMobile, said: "Concern over these threats and specifically child safety and wellbeing is actually causing a quarter of parents not to give their children mobile phones; a real shame when you consider what a great tool for advancement and development they can be."

iOS users are 52 per cent more likely to be loyal users than those who use Android .
The issue of user retention is a hot one for developers, as there's evidence that the vast majority of customers download once and never interact with the product at all.
However, in the age of freemium and better analytics data, the signs are that this is changing.
New data from Localytics suggests that in 3Q 3010, 26 per cent of downloaded apps were only used once. But this number fell to 22 per cent for 3Q 2011.
Meanwhile, the proportion of those who used an app more than ten times in the following months grew from 26 per cent to 31 per cent.
It turns out there are major differences in loyalty across different OSs.

Forget Gears of War or Unreal Tournament – iOS series Infinity Blade is the most profitable game Epic has ever made.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney told GDC Taipei, as reported byGamasutra, that: "We've been very happy with the game industry's growth.
"For a while we were worried that the divide between the console growth in the west, and the growth of PCs, would increase. The most profitable game we've ever made, in terms of man years invested versus revenue, is actually Infinity Blade. It's more profitable than Gears of War.
“[We’ve been] very, very surprised to see how fast smartphone and tablet devices are improving."
That’s not to say that Sweeney is joining the “console death” prediction ranks. Instead, he believes that console gaming is now simply one piece of a wider puzzle.
"Nowadays the high end of the game business is in these console game," he added. "I think the console business we see in the United States and Europe will be just another platform.”

Google gives more numbers to keep investors happy
[h=3]Google[/h]
At the Google I/O 2012 event today, Google announced that its Android mobile platform has reached 400 million device activations with 1 million being added every day. Google Android product management director Hugo Barra explained that activations had only hit 100 million devices prior to Google I/O 2011. Barra noted that Android is seeing significant growth in emerging markets like Brazil and India, where it is cheaper than competing platforms.
"The developing world is developing at an even faster pace. Really really exciting," he said.
In contrast, Apple announced at WWDC that it had sold 365 million iOS devices through March 30.
Google also revealed that the Google Play app store had reached 600,000 apps with over 20 billion app installs. Apple is ahead by around 10 billion app installs, according to its announcements at WWDC. After only a year since the launch of in-app billing on Google Play, more than 50 percent of revenue comes from that model.
All these numbers came alongside the announcement of Google's Android 4.1 update, Nexus 7 tablet, and Nexus Q video streaming device.

Plenty of new features for the latest version of Google's mobile OS
[h=3]Google[/h]
Google has announced that its new version of the Android operating system will be called Jelly Bean. Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean sometime in July.
Android hardware developers will also be getting a platform development kit (PDK), designed to port Android to their gadgets. It will be available to Android device partners two to three months before the planned release of a new Android platform going forward.
"We want things to be simple, beautiful, and really smart," said Android product management Hugo Barra at the Google I/O developer conference.
With Jelly Bean, users will be able to arrange icons in a way similar to Apple's iOS. Users can move apps around the screen or delete them completely, with similar additions made to the Camera app.
There will also be voice typing, with automatic interpretation of English (other languages following) into text even while offline. There are also ways to pair and connect a phone with an NFC-enabled Bluetooth device, such as a speaker, by tapping phones. "It takes one second," Barra said.
Jelly Bean will also integrate "Knowledge Graph" to give better search results. There will also be a new service called Google Now, designed to use search history, location history, and your calendar to ascertain what information you need and when.
The latest release of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, was running on 7.1 percent of Android devices as of June 1, according to the Android developer website. Still, Gingerbread is the most popular version of the mobile OS, with 65 percent of devices running Android 2.3.

Sick of hearing about Google yet? Perhaps you're not. The search giant has unleashed one final bit, quietly announcing that Chrome for Android has finally emerged from its beta stage as a stable release. Version 18.0.1025123 has officially arrived in Google Play and is available for download now for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich. Updates from the beta appear to be modest, and include some minor user interface tweaks, along with stability and performance fixes -- the big news here is the official nod from Mountain View. If you've been holding out for a final release, the time has come to hit up Play -- get where you need to go by clicking through to our source link below.

Google+ just got a makeover very recently, but it was still very much oriented towards phones -- that's been solved as of today. The social networking app is now optimized for Android tablets and the iPad, with a whole new navigation system and Hangout video chats suited to bigger screens. The layout is landscape-friendly and, if you have a new iPad, will take advantage of every pixel on that Retina display. Android users can get the update today; iPad owners will have to wait for a release coming "soon." Android phone owners are getting some of the benefits of the supersized interface in their own, more modest screen sizes as well.

Google during its I/O keynote hit a symbolic milestone: it now has 600,000 apps in the Google Play Store. As well, the store is clearly hitting a brisk pace in adoption, with 1.5 billion downloads every month and 20 billion since Android began. Free apps are available in 190 countries, with paid apps in 132. The app and download counts stack up fairly well to Apple's own claims, although not universally: it's just short of the App Store's 650,000 apps, but Apple can still point to 30 billion total downloads. Google also hasn't said how many apps are explicitly tablet-friendly versus 225,000 iPad-oriented apps. Either way, Google can say that it has largely erased the app quantity deficit, and that's no mean feat.

Awesome photographic power isn't enough to convince the networks of the device's worth.
Nokia unveiled the 808 PureView device at the 2012 Mobile World Congress, where it was awarded the title of 'Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet', all thanks to its insane 41MP camera.
But the prestige points aren't enough to appease UK networks, according to Wired, as O2, T-Mobile, Orange, and Vodafone have all confirmed they won't retail the Symbian-powered device.
It seems the choice to run the device on Symbian was even more radical than the camera power itself, and it's still unclear why Nokia decided against using its new flagship Windows Phone OS ahead of its fading Symbian.
However, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel, as 3UK was tightlipped on whether it will stock the device, offering prospective buyers network exclusivity.
The only alternative for consumers will be to cough up for a SIM-free model, retailing at around Ł500.

Thumbstar CEO Gareth Edmondson believes that both Microsoft Windows Phone and RIM’s Blackberry will gain market share at an international level, and that the latter device should not be written off as dead for gaming, because “Blackberry has such brand attachment in certain parts of the world.”
Edmondson, who quit his post as managing director Ubisoft Reflections last year, was speaking at the GameHorizon conference at The Sage, Gateshead. Representing his new company Thumbstar, a mobile game publisher that deals with more than 150 developers, he asserted that the pay-to-play model, where games are time-limited and topped up through microtransactions, is booming, and will continue to flourish - particularly in Africa.
“These things are going to be quite disruptive," he said. "Products can be made anywhere and sold anywhere. New business models will gain traction globally.” Latin America, he said, provided a “massive growth opportunity”, with 60million Android devices in the region.
Overall, there are six billion phone subscriptions worldwide. Edmondson said that smartphones would be eclipsing PCs very soon, and that the tablet market would end the year with around 160 million sales.
Passing comment on the “battle raging between Apple and Android”, the publisher pointed out that although Apple accumulates more revenue than publishers of Android devices, Google’s mobile OS has a huge global userbase - an advantage that should be very important to mobile game makers.
Much has been made of the difficulty in developing games for Android because of the huge range of technical specifications devs have to allow for; such is the nature of an open operating system. Edmondson’s figures suggested, however, that with the right localisation processes there is a definite benefit in making the move.
Rounding off his talk, Edmondson stated that the freemium business model's rapid rise in popularity should not be taken as meaning that it was suitable for all players and all markets. “If my dad wants a puzzle game," he said, "then he wants the full thing.”

The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to getSwords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google's new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it'll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

Debut Google tablet to get the new OS four months before other devices.
Jelly Bean launched formally at Google I/O two days ago, with improvements around voice search, keyboard UI, Android Beam and more.
But in an interesting turn of events, Carphone Warehouse (viaTechRadar) claims the software will be launched as Nexus 7 exclusive for the first four months.
There's a legion of Android third parties on the market – Samsung, HTC, Huawei – and many were concerned when Google first swooped to buy Motorola, fearing the search giant would favour its new department, though Google played this down.
Of course, the Jelly Bean exclusivity is comparable to the aforementioned scenario, and it could make OEMs feel uneasy, with November marked on the calendar as the very nearest date they'll receive access to the tech.
Meanwhile, Carphone Warehouse will retail the 16GB Nexus 7 for Ł199.99.

RIM is fast turning from a handset maker into a case study for business studies students. The firm has been in free fall for two years, and its latest financials show a worsening of its plight.
It reported a $192m for its Q1 ended June 2nd, with revenue down 43 per cent to $2.81bn. Handset sales slipped to 7.8m, which is barely half of the 14m of two quarters ago. And there were just 260,000 Playbook sales.
The firm has shipped more than 10m devices every quarter since late in 2009.
All terrible stuff, but the delay of the new OS, BB10, is arguably the worst news of all. This was supposed to signal the re-launch of the platform with devices based on the QNX technology that powers a large number of diverse consumer electronics devices.
The launch was scheduled for Q3 but will now slip to 2013. It's hard to imagine that device sales will reverse their decline until then.

Bloomberg has reported that Apple will announce changes to iTunes by the end of the year.
An unnamed source has revealed to Bloomberg that Apple will more closely integrate its iCloud file-storage service with iTunes, meaning users will be able to seamlessly access and manage their music, videos and downloaded software apps across all of their Apple devices.
The source also claimed that there will be plans for new features for sharing music.
The rumoured updates to iTunes are said to aim to improve how people manage files and may include changes to how users find new material.
The claims state that Apple has been looking into the idea of users being able to send songs to each other to listen to for free.
Today is the iPhone’s fifth birthday; the smartphone has elevated Apple from enthusiast-based to one of the most recognised brands in the whole world. With this rise in popularity, the App Store has grown to include 28 million songs, 45,000 movies and 650,000 apps – all in just seven years.

Adobe has stated that its Flash plug-in would not be supported in the latest Android OS update, Jelly Bean.
The company has announce that is will discontinue developing Flash Player for mobile browsers, and as of August 15th, the player will be taken down from Google Play.
This will mean that pages, banners and games written in Flash could run into trouble when trying to load on a device running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
“Beginning August 15th we will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th,” said Adobe in a statement.
Apple has never supported Flash, and one of the big attractions with Android devices was that they did.
Adobe will focus on its continued work with Flash on PC browsing and mobile apps packaged with Adobe AIR.
