During a private demo of the near-final Wikipad this week, Joystiq was able to grill Wikipad president of sales Fraser Townley about next month's launch. Specifically, we wanted to learn whether OnLive and Gaikai functionality – the former with its recent change in ownership and the latter having recently been picked up by Sony – were still planned for the device.
"Yes," Townsley assured Joystiq, to both applications appearing on the device. Speaking on the situation at OnLive, Townsley said he didn't have much knowledge what was happening at the company, but promised that "if [the service is] still running when we launch Wikipad, it'll be there."
While Wikipad will have physical units for purchase in-store through official partner GameStop, all other major retailers will be taking orders online. When asked what would be a successful launch for the $499 tablet – which comes with the controller dock and 16GB of memory – Townley couldn't provide exact numbers, but said that "a point or two" of total tablet market share would be desirable.

The Wikipad is an anomaly. It's a 10.1-inch, $500 Android tablet aimed squarely at gamers -- an expensive portal to a platform many mobile game developers have abandoned due to piracy. It's got an IPS display with 1,280 x 800 resolution, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (at launch). So ... it's not quite as sharp in the graphics department as some other tablets on the market, nor is it as pretty as its main handheld gaming competition, the PlayStation Vita. On top of that, it's from an engineering firm that you've never heard of -- Wikipad is also the name of the business behind the tablet, and this is the company's first product launch. Oh, and did we mention that the main selling point is an attachable game controller that frames half the tablet in a mess of plastic buttons, joysticks, and speakers? And no, the controller won't be sold separately, nor will it work with any other tablet.
Defying all logic, however, the Wikipad feels like a surprisingly solid piece of equipment (regardless of the fact that the prototype model we used was hand-built). From the light but solid construction of the tablet's chassis, to its grippy molded rear -- which helps both for gripping the tablet without the controller attached and assists sound amplification when the device is laid down -- nothing about the device feels cheap. As a tablet, it's speedy and responsive. Apps load quickly and smoothly, and it's got extra loud speakers for gaming without headphones (or for David Guetta, as was demonstrated to us). The custom skin it was running felt a bit rough -- the apps get reorganized with a gaming focus and slapped onto a flippable cube, which caused some visual stuttering from pane to pane. Another feature of the custom OS is a special 3D game launcher, which includes sections for Nvidia's Tegra Zone, PlayStation Mobile games, GameStop-suggested titles, and Google Play. There are some less than exciting ad banners attached to this launcher, but they're easily ignorable. Though Gaikai is still working with the Wikipad post-Sony buyout, CEO James Bower told us the game streaming service won't be there at launch -- he's hoping it'll arrive by year's end, "but that's up to Sony."

As the initial wave of iPhone 5 reviews hit, it looked as if Apple's dual-core A6 processor was sporting a clock speed of around 1GHz. We saw reports (and confirmed with our own handset) ranging between 1.00 and 1.02GHz, but a new Geekbench build (v2.3.6) has today revealed a horse of a different color. According to Primate Labs' own John Poole, the latest version of the app -- which landed on the App Store today -- "features a dramatically improved processor frequency detection algorithm, which consistently reports the A6's frequency as 1.3GHz." In speaking with us, he affirmed that "earlier versions of Geekbench had trouble determining the A6's frequency, which lead to people claiming the A6's frequency as 1.0GHz as it was the most common value Geekbench reported."
When we asked if he felt that the A6 was capable of dynamically overclocking itself for more demanding tasks, he added: "I don't believe the A6 has any form of processor boost. In our testing, we found the 1.3GHz was constant regardless of whether one core or both cores were busy." Our own in-house iPhone 5 is regularly displaying 1.29GHz, while a tipster's screenshot (hosted after the break) clearly display 1.30GHz. Oh, and if anyone wants to dip their iPhone 5 in a vat of liquid nitrogen while trying to push things well over the 2GHz level, we certainly wouldn't try to dissuade your efforts.

Indies speak out on lack of discoverability and claim new OS favours established studios
The App Store in Apple’s newly released iOS 6 is a disaster for developers and users, it has been claimed.
As discussed on the LightWood Games Blog for developers, Chris Newman and a number of other indies said there were a number of problems on the latest OS, particularly concerning the lack of visibility for new apps.
He explained that there was no longer a “sort by release date” option, with tabs for games searches restricted to paid, free and top grossing.
Newman questioned how small developers and studios could become successful and get noticed on the App Store given that exposure was restricted to options which largely listed the same games.
“For a small developer, this is terrible news,” said Newman.

Attention all passengers headed for Apocalypse Island, an urgent travel advisory has been issued. Due to a deadly plague of biblical proportions running its course through all of Pygmy-kind (released into the wild today by Bolt Creative in Pocket God Episode 46: Germs of Endearment), we strongly urge you to be considerate and cover your mouth while passing away into the afterlife in order to prevent further spreading of this malicious ailment. Also of grave importance, please stay away from the new—and aptly named—Plague Room, as the water contained in the fountain within this chamber is infected with the virulent disease.
Please keep in mind that this daunting affliction is not limited to just Pygmies; all forms of life on every island, including gigantic apes, poo-slinging monkeys, hungry T-Rexes, and sharks with laser beams, run the risk of contracting this perilous malady. Even non-organic, inanimate objects can be contaminated, so exercise caution when using an outhouse, borrowing fishing poles, playing the bongos, and more.
Alternatively, if you would like to live just a little bit longer, you may visit our other new addition to Apocolypse Island—the Purification Room—a chamber containing a fountain filled with non-alcoholic hand sanitizer. This concoction of disease fighting liquid will not only help stave the spread of infection, but it also won’t dry out your skin. Because really, who wants flaky hands when you’re dying.
Thank you for your cooperation and have a nice death.
-Department of Epidemic Advisory Distribution (D.E.A.D.)
P.S. A wickedly cute Monster Skin Pack, created by artist Aaron Blecha, is now available for in-app purchase at $0.99. Though the Monster Skin Pack won’t save your Pygmies from the blight, they’ll look pretty darn cool.
Take a virtual tour of the stunning views in Episode 46 by watching this newly created Pocket God video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdgFP4n1mTA&feature=player_embedded.
Book your travel to Apocalypse Island, and all the other islands of Pocket God, by visiting http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket-god/id301387274?mt=8.

Canadian web designer, David Tym, is preparing to enter the indie video game market with a bang. “The game I’m building is in the Vertical Scrolling Shooter genre, where you’re a modern fighter aircraft shooting up as waves of enemy swoop down on you, says David. It’s all fast-paced action, military hardware and gruff army generals.”
Differences between this new game and others in the genre are significant. Firstly, while popular games for the iPhone/iPad platform tend to be set in World War 2 or the future, David Tym’s game fights aliens in modern times with modern equipment the player can control. So instead of tapping on 2D pictures of the aircraft you want, you’re flying in fully-customizable, super-realistic 3D fighters, similar to cars we see in the Racing genre. “Essentially I’m pulling cool stuff from other genres and putting it altogether in a Vertical Scrolling Shooter game. I’m going full-out on features,” explains David.
Another dramatic difference is weapons selection. Unlike other games in the genre which offer very fundamental armament, this new game allows more guns and heavier guns to be added as the action heats up. The result is incredible crescendos in firepower, thrills and excitement.
Follow the battle
In addition to being the game’s creator, David Tym is recording its progress from beginning to launch to maintenance. “I’ve created a blog, Twitter,YouTube channel and Facebook. Yes, part of it is for buzz but a big part is for showing people what works and what doesn’t. I’ll be documenting my ups and downs, the business, the marketing and everything else. With 14 years in web design, my skill set transfers quite easily to video games but there is still lots to learn, so it’s going to be an interesting flight!”
This new vertical scrolling shooter game, David Tym’s first app, is set for release in the Apple store by Christmas with a 10-to-25 male target audience.

A physical teardown of the iPhone 5 by IHS iSuppli reveals that Apple has managed to keep its materials and manufacturing costs roughly in line with that of the iPhone 4S. The firm estimated the Bill of Materials for the iPhone 5's low-end variant at $199.00, rising to $207.00 once manufacturing costs are entered into the equation. It tallied the BOM for the 32GB version at $209.00 (or $217 with manufacturing) and the 64GB one at $230.00 (rising slightly to $238 with those manufacturing costs). Compare that to the BOM for the iPhone 4S, which IHS iSuppli estimated at $188 for the 16GB version (rising to $196 with manufacturing costs added in), $207 for the 32GB version ($215 with manufacturing) and $245 for the 64GB version ($254 with manufacturing)."Reader redkemper writes with another kind of comparison of the newest iPhone to its predecessor:"Apple didn't spend too much time talking about the iSight camera at the iPhone 5s unveil event because it's mostly the same as the one found in the iPhone 4S. Thankfully, iMore grabbed an iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S and did a fantastic shoot-out between the two device's rear cameras. [The new camera] just barely edges out the iPhone 4S's year-old camera."

Reverse engineering company Chipworks has completed its initial microscopic analysis of Apple's new A6 SoC (found in the iPhone 5), and there are some rather interesting findings. First, there's a tri-core GPU — and then there's a custom, hand-made dual-core ARM CPU. Hand-made chips are very rare nowadays, with Chipworks reporting that it hasn't seen a non-Intel hand-made chip for 'years.' The advantage of hand-drawn chips is that they can be more efficient and capable of higher clock speeds — but they take a lot longer (and cost a lot more) to design. Perhaps this is finally the answer to what PA Semi's engineers have been doing at Apple since the company was acquired back in 2008..."Pretty picture of the chip after using an Ion Beam to remove the casing. The question I have is how it's less expensive (in the long run) to lay a chip out by hand once instead of improving your VLSI layout software forever. NP classification notwithstanding.
