What's better than a waterproof smartphone? How about one you can clean with soap? Kyocera, which has done a line in toughphones for several year, revealed exactly that. Launching in (particularly soap-themed) pink, white and blue color options in Japan, don't let the kawaii design fool you -- the phone is pretty designed to take some damage. And a shower.
According to Kyocera, because smartphone use is now so frequent, many users are looking for a phone that they can use -- and like anything else, clean it up afterwards. (The press release mentions recipe look-up). To that end, the DIGNO rafre has a longlife, extra-hardy waterproof coating. This "handsoap-washable water resistance" also includes protection from warm water — which you'd probably be using alongside the soap.

Minecraft dominates the iPad and iPhone paid charts.
The Pocket Edition of Mojang’s hit is No.1 on both platforms, while Telltale’s new episodic Story Mode takes second place in the iPad ranks and No.5 on iPhone.
These titles are absent from the Grossing Top Tens which are ruled by mobile giants KING and SUPERCELL. Candy Crush generated the most revenue on iPad for the week, while Clash of Clans did the same on iPhone.
And King is surely looking to recreate Candy Crush’s success with new game Blossom Blast, which topped the free iPad chart last week.

Let's get this out of the way right up top: Sikur's GranitePhone is not for you. Security as a feature is nothing new -- BlackBerry's entire existence rests upon it at this point -- but the GranitePhone takes security to another level. While the phone is based on Android, it runs a forked version called GraniteOS that is startling in its simplicity. You can make secure, encrypted voice calls and use Sikur's encrypted chat and messaging service. There's also support for standard GSM calls and SMS messages, and you can take photos or add standard Exchange, POP or IMAP email accounts. But that's it.
There's no app store or even many built-in apps for things we think of as standard smartphone features, and that's all with intention. This isn't a phone for the standard smartphone user, says Sikur CEO Fred D'Avila -- instead, his company built a phone in partnership with hardware manufacturer Archos specifically for governments, big enterprise clients and financial institutions. The challenge will be convincing those potential clients to go with Sikur and the GranitePhone over its better-known competitors.
In keeping with its target markets, the GranitePhone hardware itself is a very standard, unassuming, even boring device with little to set it apart from the rest of the crowded Android field. It's a 5-inch device with a 1080p screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal, non-expandable storage. It has a 16-megapixel back camera and 8-megapixel front facing camera and a 2,700mAh battery that you can't replace.

Want a handset with Apple's fancy new A9 processor, a colorful metal caseand a slightly smaller display? GHI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo says you're going to get one. According to the analyst's latest research, Apple is on track to launch a 4-inch Apple 5 successor in early 2016 -- painting the picture of a device with the same A9 processor as the iPhone 6s, NFC support for Apple Pay, a metal case with multiple color options and a $400-500 off-contract price tag aimed at the budget market.
If real, the device could be a welcome followup to Apple's"unapologetically plastic" 5c smartphone -- retaining the smaller footprint of the iPhone 5/6 and still integrating some of the best tweaks introduced with the 6s. Still, take the rumor with a grain of salt: Ming-Chi Kuo has a decent track record when it comes to Apple predictions, but he isn't alwaysright.

An anonymous reader writes with this story about how the Apple vs. Samsung battle brought to light the inner workings of Apple product development. BGR reports: "Following a contentious patent battle that raged on for nearly five years, Samsung last week finally agreed to pay Apple $548 million in damages for infringing upon a number of iPhone and iPad patents. While Samsung may still be holding out hope that it may someday recover those millions, it seems that we can finally start closing the book on the most widely publicized patent dispute in recent memory, one which saw Apple and Samsung battle it out in courtrooms across all corners of the globe.
One of the more interesting aspects of Apple's legal battle with Samsung is that it gave us an unprecedented look behind the veil of secrecy that typically shrouds all aspects of Apple's product development and day-to-day operations. Over the course of discovery, innumerable court filings, and a fascinating trial, the inner workings of Apple were brought to the forefront for the fist time in history. From photographs of iPhone prototypes to how Apple conducts market research, Apple's legal battles with Samsung provided tech enthusiasts with a treasure trove of previously top-secret information.
With Samsung now agreeing to pony up for damages, we thought it'd be a good time to take a step back, reminisce, and take a look at some of the more interesting nuggets of information the hard-fought patent dispute brought to light."

You no longer need an iPhone to read Facebook's Instant Articles on the move. As of today, anyone in the world with an Android phone (and the Facebook app, of course) can read those quick-to-load stories. The experience will be very familiar if you've tried it before, but it promises to bring Instant Articles to a considerably wider audience -- particularly in developing countries where low-cost phones and slow internet access are still par for the course.
Facebook might need the boost. While legions of publishers (over 350) signed up for the feature after realizing that they were losing views through their slower-loading sites, they haven't been making a lot of money thanks to the reduced ad revenue. The social network is tweaking its formula to sustain interest, but it may need to count on sheer reader numbers to make up the difference in the short run.

Microsoft's Outlook for iOS has quickly become one of the platform's best options for managing your inbox, and today it got a handy new feature: 3D Touch support. iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users can now press on the home screen icon to reveal options for quickly sending an email, adding an event to your calendar, or jumping straight into your calendar view. It doesn't seem that any 3D Touch gestures have been added anywhere else in the app, though -- you're limited to these quick actions from the home screen.
In a decidedly less useful nod to the classic days of offices gone by, Microsoft has also gone ahead and made it easy to print emails and full conversation threads directly from the message view. The days when it made sense to print emails have long since passed, but if you're someone who really still needs to deal with dead paper, the feature is there waiting for you. Just make sure you consider the environment before hitting print.

Apple has opened a lab in Taiwan, according to Bloomberg, with "at least 50" engineers looking into advanced display technology for products including the iPhone and iPad. It's pulled in workers from Taiwanese display company AU Optronics, as well as Qualcomm, to develop new screens. The tech company is aiming to make its displays thinner, lighter and more efficient, with Bloomberg's sources adding that Apple is looking into OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) displays. While these would tick a lot of the aforementioned boxes (and don't need backlighting), they're also harder and more expensive to produce -- although they often look incredible. If Apple can get it right, however, it'll reduce its supply needs from other electronics giants, including Samsung, LG and Sharp.

Nine months is a long time in the smartphone industry, so it should come as no surprise that Samsung is already preparing to launch the next iteration of its flagship smartphone. While the Korean smartphone maker may still be a few months away from showing us what's new, the Wall Street Journal has already caught wind of some of the features we can expect to see in the Galaxy S7. According to reporters, Samsung will include a "pressure-sensitive display and a new high-speed charging port" in its new devices, which are slated to launch in March.
The company is reportedly considering the inclusion of a retina scanner in some versions of its new flagship, although that is not yet set in stone. Like the Galaxy S6, Samsung will debut two models: the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
With the inclusion of a pressure-sensitive display, Samsung looks set to follow Apple, which is already touting "3D Touch" functionality. With a USB Type-C port, the Galaxy S7 will charge significantly faster, with sources telling the Wall Street Journal that devices will "allow for a full day's charge in under 30 minutes and in some cases significantly faster than that." An improved camera is also said to be coming -- one that that performs better in low-light and sits flat on the back of the device (the Galaxy S6 accommodated a small bump).
Overall, it doesn't appear that the Galaxy S7 family will differ that much from last year's models. However, Samsung's new smartphone chief will hope that he can gauge demand better than his predecessor and avoid making too many (or too few) of its popular handsets. We can expect the Galaxy S7 family to make its debut in or around Mobile World Congress, which opens on February 22nd, with the handsets going on sale a couple of weeks later. The quick launch is said to be deliberate: Samsung doesn't want to let any of its rivals steal a march this time around.

The new Apple TV has been available for a little over six weeks and there are more than 2,600 apps available. However, dedicated UK apps have been few and far between. Sky's Now TV is on the platform, but we've had to bide our time while the BBC readies its own app. Luckily, that wait is now over. Coming just ahead of the holidays, the new BBC iPlayer app lets you dig into the Beeb's live and on-demand content across all of its channels.
Inside the app, programmes are listed by channel but also via genre. Recommendations, search, and parental guidance features are all included and you can also utilise Siri voice control. The BBC says subtitles are coming, as is the ability to find programmes via Apple's built-in search, but they'll be available in a later update.
The BBC is making good use of colour too, as the Cbeebies section (pictured below) demonstrates. It'll also play a big part in helping take BBC Three online-only, as the Beeb prepares to sunset the TV channel in February next year.

The boss of Nintendo America has said warned that gamers shouldn’t be expecting traditional experiences from the company’s firs smartphone titles.
“Unfortunately there’s a simplistic mentality out there, that ‘Make a Mario game for smart devices’ is a recipe for printing money,” Reggie Fils-Aimé told TIME. “And it’s not. It just simply is not. It’s that Kyoto craftsmanship mentality that says whatever we’re going to do, it needs to be a wonderful experience for consumers.
“We know that Mario and his ability to run and jump, to transform based on different items, that’s been optimized for a play-control approach that doesn’t exist for smartphones. And so for us, it’s not simply taking existing games and porting them over to smart devices as the answer. Our answer is to create new compelling experiences that leverage what smart devices do best.
“In this way, what I would say in terms of our mobile apps is that we will absolutely continue our traditional maxim of developing software that matches the hardware. We have looked at the limitations of software design on mobile platforms, and worked within those parameters. If there’s a 3DS game that requires the full manipulation of joysticks and multiple buttons, that game clearly can’t be exactly replicated on a touch-screen mobile device.
“So what we’ve been working at is development of apps that feature Nintendo IP in a meaningful way for mobile platforms. We understand that this may feel different.
“And that’s OK. Doing things differently isn’t something we shy away from. And we’re confident we can deliver ‘surprise and delight’ within the profile of mobile devices just as well as we do with dedicated portables or home consoles.”
Late Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata was delivering a similar message as long ago as January 2014, prior to the announcement of Nintendo’s partnership with DeNA.
The company’s first mobile title is a Mii-themed messaging app called Miitomo. Analysts have suggested that future releases will focus on more popular Nintendo IP.
