The BlueStacks Android emulator, which already has around 90 million Windows users, has finally arrived on OSX after an extended beta testing phase. The free emulator runs both x86 and ARM-based apps as well as provides full keyboard and mouse support. It even allows for gesture controls like pinch to zoom with a trackpad and takes advantage of your Mac's Retina display. Users can sync files and data from their mobile devices or pull new apps from Google Play directly to their Mac. You can download the program directly from the BlueStacks website.

The arrival of Apple Music has been much-celebrated, but for it to live, the company appears to have killed-off Home Sharing from iOS. The feature enabled you to stream tunes from your desktop (i.e. where your collection is) over your home network to a local iPod, iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately, as9to5Mac reports, that offering has now been pulled, so you'll have to postpone any impromptu kitchen parties that you had planned. Interestingly, the change only affects music playback, since you can still share video to nearby iDevices.

A couple of weeks ago, Motorola slashed the prices of its top handsets in the UK as part of another of its temporary sales. If the opportunity to pick up a heavily discounted Moto X or Nexus 6 passed you by, we've got a couple of reasons you needn't feel too dejected. Firstly, there's rumblings of new hardware on the horizon, so that Moto X you could've snagged on the cheap mightn't be as fresh as you'd like in the near future. If the Nexus 6 is more your bag, however, then we've got even better news. The official price of the Motorola-made handset has just hit an all-time low in the Google Store: the 32GB model is now only Ł304, and the 64GB version an equally reasonable Ł379.

Tired of recording 'just' 1080p video on your iPhone while your friends produce clips in glorious 4K? You won't have to look on with envy for much longer, if the latest rumors are on the mark. A tipster on China's Sina Weibo has postedwhat appear to be leaked details of the next iPhone's rear camera, and it'll reportedly jump to 12 megapixels with 4K video recording. There's no guarantee that this is in the cards, but it jives with earlier claims that Apple's future handset will focus on camera upgrades. You're not likely to see design changes, if 9to5Mac's photos are accurate, so photographic improvements like this will likely be more important this time around.

A new Apple patent has been published online revealing that Apple Watch users may be able to exchange data by handshaking,
The patent doesn’t specifically mention the Apple Watch but the filing refers to a device that can be ‘worn’ by users.
Published in the filing, it may be possible for two devices to share data when both users engage in a similar gesture, for example fist pumping or handshaking.
The patent said: “Information items can be exchanged between user devices worn or carried by two different users in response to the devices detecting a "greeting event" in which the devices are in proximity and the users of the devices concurrently execute a greeting gesture.”
In addition, contextual information may also be available with the device, including the user’s location and the user’s input.
This news comes after rumours revealed that the Apple Watch 2 may feature a video camera.
In other news, the tech giant has also started to roll out its series or summer camps, where kids can learn how to create movies and interactive books.
Apple is inviting kids aged from eight to 12-years-old to visit a retail store during its three-day event, where they will get the chance to use software such as GarageBand and iMovie.
Apple’s summer workshops will be hosted between 11am and 12:30pm local time, on various dates from July 20th to August 7th in the UK, US, China, Japan, Spain and more.

Liquid Metal is an alloy metal (technically, bulk metallic glass) that manages to combine the best features of a wide variety of materials into one product. Liquid Metal also has high corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, remarkable anti-wear characteristics and can also be heat-formed. Given its unique properties, Liquid Metal has been used in a number of industries, including in smartphones. Historically, it has been limited to small-scale applications and pieces parts, not entire products. However, Turing Robotic Industries (TRI) just announced pre-orders forthe world's first liquid metal-frame smartphone. The Turing Phone uses its own brand of Liquid Metal called Liquidmorphium, which provides excellent shock absorption characteristics. So instead of making a dent in the smartphone casing or cracking/chipping like plastic when dropped, a Turing Phone should in theory "shake it off" while at the same time protecting the fragile display from breaking. The Turing Phone does not come cheap, however, with pricing starting at $610 for a 16GB model and escalating quickly to $740 and $870 respectively for the 64GB and 128GB models, unlocked. Pre-orders open up on July 31.

A minor Chinese consumer protection group has filed lawsuits againstSamsung and Oppo to contest the pair's use of bloatware on their smartphones. The Shanghai Consumer Council believes that the two companies install far too many additional apps on their devices and then make it difficult for them to be easily removed. The group says that it was motivated to launch the legal broadside after a high number of complaints from users. It believes that people are aggrieved that they've got less storage space than expected, and that these apps slurp down excessive quantities of data.

Irked that Apple Pay is only officially slated to reach the UK sometime in July? Don't worry -- you might not have to wait all month to see it. Multiple retailer leaks at 9to5Mac point to Apple launching its iPhone tap-to-pay service in Old Blighty on July 14th, or soon enough that you can likely use it if you're off to one of the country's many summer music festivals. Just don't expect to splurge on more than a quick bite to eat while you're out. That Ł20 (soon to be Ł30)contactless payment cap seriously limits how much you can spend, so the British implementation won't be quite as convenient as it is for Americans.

Want to help cure Alzheimer's or breast cancer? From now on, you don't have to do much more than charge your phone. Sony has released a big upgrade to its Folding@Home app for Android that can use your phone's processor for medical research on a continuous basis -- so long as you're on WiFi and charging, you can doze off knowing that you're contributing to a good cause. It also ties into your Google account to both accumulate time on multiple devices as well as earn game-like achievements. The refresh is available now, so give it a shot if you'd like your phone to do more in its idle time than fetch your email.

The ubiquitous search box widget at the top of your Android mobile device is getting some new tricks. Chris Lacy, creator of the Action Launcher app, announced the release of Action Launcher 3.5 on Tuesday. The new version builds on AL 3.0, which allowed users to match the widget's color to their background theme (as well as the app drawer) or scroll through an alphabetical app list accessible from the home screen. The app also features slick shortcuts for both folders and widgets called covers and shutters, respectively. And with the release of AL 3.5, users can fully customize the search box by incorporating apps, shortcuts and even menu groups directly into the bar itself.

It's been reported even before Apple launched its Music streaming service that the company's facing antitrust probes in the US. Now, Reuters says the FTC has begun looking into Cupertino's "treatment of rival streaming music apps" to make sure it's not violating any antitrust law. See, iTunes also offers those competitor apps for download, and Apple gets a 30 percent cut per subscription paid through the program. That forces the companies to choose between charging extra on top of their $9.99 per month service (making the total $12.99) and accepting the loss to match Apple Music's pricing.

The latest update to Google Maps on Android is one of those things that honestly should have happened a long time ago, but surprisingly didn't until recently: Now you can send destination info directly to your mobile device from the desktop. Just like on iOS. And as Android Police points out, it all sounds pretty facile. So long as you have the latest version of the mobile app installed, from the Maps website you should see an option to send the current query to devices you're signed into with your Google account. From there, an actionable notification pops on your gizmo and you can either check out the destination's website (if there is one) or its profile card on Google. Like I said, it's pretty simple and something you'd have thought was already there but actually wasn't.

Samsung is believed to be bringing the launch date of the Galaxy Note 5 forward by a few weeks in order to beat Apple to the punch. The Wall Street Journal believes that the Korean company will announce its phabletgigantophone in August and get it into stores ahead of the iPhone 6S. It's a break from tradition, since Samsung normally refreshes the Note line at IFA in the first week of September. Last year, however, the iPhone 6 arrived around the same time and, presumably, stole enough thunder to prompt the change.

Phones, tablets and other devices slow down over time, no matter how expensive or cutting edge they were when you bought them. Now, researchers from Hanyang University in Korea claim a technology they developed can delay the inevitable. It's called Where's WALDIO or Write Ahead Logging Direct IO, and according to team leader Professor You-jip Won, it's a mode that extends battery life and speeds up phones by minimizing the amount of data a device records. "The core of the newly-developed technology is to record a small amount of data," Won said. "This tech will make it possible to use low-priced flash memory for a long time, like expensive flash memory."

Apple's still pretty new to this whole public beta thing, but that didn't stop it from dropping two consumer previews today. We've already taken a closer look at Apple's latest desktop OS, so it's high time we dug a little deeper into what it's like using an early version of iOS 9. Spoiler alert: It's pretty damned solid.
Before we go any further, though, keep this in mind: As stable as the iOS 9 beta seems right now, it's still not ideal for use as a daily driver. If you're itching to taste the future, you might want to use a spare, sacrificial iDevice just in case. I'm testing this build on an iPad Air 2, which has a few tweaks that won't show up on the iPhone, so I'll flag those when the time is right. Ready? Let's go.

If you're eager to get your hands on Apple's latest mobile OS, and you don't mind running unfinished software, you can now snag an iOS 9 public beta for your iPhone and iPad. To refresh, iOS 9 includes a significantly smarter version of Siri (which seems a lot like Google Now, at this point); better system-level privacy; and split-screen multitasking on the iPad. And of course, there will be a slew of other performance upgrades. This slightly more polished beta -- which supports the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and later devices -- comes after developers have had a chance to test out iOS 9 over the past month. That means most of the major issues have hopefully been ironed out. If you haven't yet, you can sign up for the iOS 9 public beta on Apple's website. As always, we can expect the final version of iOS 9 to land alongside new iPhones later this fall. We downloaded the beta here at Engadget HQ, so if you're feeling adventurous, you should be able to do the same from the source link below.

It seems silly that it's taken so long, but Lucasfilm and Disney have finally debuted an official Star Wars app to keep you connected to that far away galaxy at all times. Available for iOS and Android, it's basically a marketing conduit for the lead up to the The Force Awakens, offering up news, countdown timers for film releases and the usual Star Wars trivia. But it also seems like they've had some fun with the app: There's a jedi training feature that lets you swing your phone like a light saber, a collection of animated GIFs and classic sound effects, and you can even snap selfies as Star Wars characters. It seems like the app is basically a mobile extension of StarWars.com, which has served as a vibrant online hub for the franchise even when there were no new films on the horizon. (Insert obligatory "It's a trap!" reference here.)

If you'd had your eye on a new Nexus device but missed out on the recent round of smartphone sales, today's new Google tablet deal might be of interest. Just days after the Nexus 6 price was slashed to Ł304 (normally Ł479), the WiFi Nexus 9 is enjoying similar treatment, with the 16GB model now setting you back Ł200 instead of the usual Ł319. Amazon and Argos are both hosting the deal, which also includes a Ł100 discount on the 32GB model, but Google has not reflected the price change on its own store.

You'll frequently hear law enforcement complain that it can't break the full-drive encryption in newer smartphone operating systems, but how often do the police run into that problem, really? Thanks to a US Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, you now have a better idea. The Manhattan District Attorney's office has revealed that, out of the 92 cases where an iPhone withiOS 8 has been involved so far, the cops have been locked out 74 times. District Attorney Cyrus Vance portrays this as proof that officers need backdoors or other forms of guaranteed access, noting that there's at least one case (in Illinois) where evidence from a victim's iPhone led to a conviction. Police shouldn't simply be told that there's "nothing [they] can do," he says.

Apple has gained some more publicity this week thanks to its Apple Watch, although the company may not be too happy with the exposure.
Apple Watch wearers have taken to social media to share their photos of burns and rashes caused by the device.
One wearer tweeted on Twitter: “Not worn my Apple Watch today, yet there seems to be some sort of burn. Anyone else got this too ?”
While another user also tweeted: “wtf? My Apple Watch has burnt a hole in my wrist!!”, along with an image of a rash across his wrist.

Microsoft announced today that it is expanding the distribution channels for its Surface tablet line ahead of the upcoming Windows 10 global rollout. The Surface is currently sold through "a couple hundred" authorized Surface device distributors, as Gavriella Schuster, General Manager of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Program, explained in a statement, but will soon grow to a few thousand. Any partner distributor can reportedly sign up for the expanded program assuming they qualify on volume sold. "We expect to get a few thousand resellers to jump on this," Schuster told ZDNet.

Google is launching brand new watch-to-watch communication features forAndroid Wear that are not unlike those on Apple's Watch, according toPhandroid. Users will reportedly be able to send each other doodles, photos, stickers, messages and more using a feature called "Together." That's pretty similar to the Apple Watch's Digital Touch, which allows users to relay tap patterns, drawings and even heartbeats to each other. Oddly, Android Wear users who want to share items may need to use the same the same watchface, as the feature isn't system-wide. However, Phandroid admitted that its information on that aspect "is quite old."

Have one of TiVo's DVRs in the living room, but would rather not get another one of its devices just to watch recordings in the basement? If you use Apple devices at home, you no longer have to. TiVo has updated its iOS app with (long, long overdue) AirPlay mirroring support, so you can send your recorded shows to an Apple TV as long as everything is on the same local network. You'll need a Premiere, Roamio Plus, Roamio Pro or Stream device for AirPlay to even be an option, so don't get your hopes up if you're hanging on to old hardware. Still, this a big step forward -- you now have an easy way to catch up on missed episodes without having a TiVo-based set-top attached to your TV of choice.

45-year-old Robin Lee was arrested after he used a socket on a London Overground train to charge up his iPhone. He was handcuffed and arrested for "abstracting electricity". Robin was then charged with "unacceptable behaviour" after "becoming aggressive" when objecting to his first arrest. The Guardian reports: "Speaking to the Evening Standard, Lee said he had been confronted by a police community support officer on the overground train from Hackney Wick to Camden Road on 10 July. The Overground is part of Transport For London’s wider network that also includes London Underground and the buses. 'She said I’m abstracting electricity. She kept saying it’s a crime. We were just coming into the station and there happened to be about four police officers on the platform. She called to them and said: ‘This guy’s been abstracting electricity, he needs to be arrested’.”

Microsoft's been big on facial recognition lately. After promising that the technology can be used as a log-in option for Windows 10, it launched a website that guesses your age based on your features (HowOld.net) and another that takes a stab at whether the people in two different photos are twins (TwinsOrNot.net). More recently, the company has launched a mobile app version of TwinsOrNot for Windows Phone devices. You know, for those times when you quickly need to know if your power brows really make you look like Cara Delevingne. Or if you and your BFF are slowly morphing into a single person like Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry in the image above.

The iPod may not be Apple's golden goose anymore, hell, it's not even an option on the company's site anymore, but that doesn't mean that the firm is ignoring it. The company is giving the iPods a seasonal refresh with the junior devices getting some new colors and the iPod touch getting more of the features we're used to seeing on the iPhone. Whereas the existing touch came with just a 5-megapixel camera, the new version gets an 8-megapixel shooter with burst and slo-mo -- just as you'd find on the iPad Air 2. Internals-wise, the new iPod comes with the 64-bit A8 CPU that you find in the iPhone 6, paired with the M8 motion co-processor that'll please the fitness enthusiast in your life.

Samsung has quietly launched its slimmest smartphone ever in China. TheGalaxy A8 isn't a spec-monster, but it's certainly a design feat for a company that gets criticized a lot on that front. The all-metal body is just 5.9mm thin, weighs a mere 151 grams (5.3 oz) and has a bezel size that you can basically round down to zero. The internals are still good enough to fight any mid-range device: a 5.7-inch 1080p OLED display, 8-core Snapdragon 615 chip, a 16-megapixel f/2.2 rear/5-megapixel wide-angle f/1.9 front camera and 2GB of RAM. Despite the size, Samsung managed to squeeze in a generous 3,050mAh battery that's larger than the Galaxy S6's.

It might be safe to stay signed in to Skype these days, but that doesn't mean you want to. Do you really want a video call from your parents when you're out on the town? If not, you'll be glad to hear that Skype is making it much easier to sign in and out. The Android app's 5.5 update now remembers your login details after you log out, so hopping online again is just a matter of tapping a button. If you're worried that someone will snoop on your conversations, you can still ask Skype to require your password whenever you get back to business. Grab the new app today if you often find yourself eager for some quiet time.

Apple has revealed that it is making more progress to help diversify its workforce, with its next diversity report coming sometime this summer.
Denise Young Smith, Apple’s global human resources chief, said that the firm will reveal more progress, pointing out that 35 per cent of Apple’s most recent employees are female.
She said: “We did have some movement in our hiring of women and hiring of minorities.”
Tim Cook CEO of Apple, also previously called for more diversity within the workforce at the firm during a speech at WWDC 2015.
Apple also joined the group of Silicon Valley companies, which publicly report the gender, race and ethnicity of its workforce.
Plus, the firm has also partnered with the National Center for Women and Information Technology, to help widen its access to women in the tech industry.
In addition, Apple is allegedly focusing on production for its next-generation iPad Mini and is planning an end-of-life iPad after its revamp.
According to Economic Daily via Apple Insider, the firm is also allegedly producing a larger 12.9-inch model that has been dubbed the iPad Pro, however the company will apparently not launch a next-generation iPad Air until 2016.
Other previous reports suggest that the iPad Pro may come equipped with an improved flexible touch panel.
Lastly, Apple’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have also reportedly entered production.
According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the smartphone will launch with a bigger display and will be slightly taller and thicker than its predecessors, plus colours may also match the Apple Watch.

Hot on the heels of releasing a new version of OneNote for the Mac, Microsoft is pushing out some updates to its corresponding iOS and Android apps. For starters, there are no longer separate applications for the iPhone and iPad; in fact, iPad users will be prompted to re-download the app the next time they launch it. The main benefit here seems to be that Microsoft has an easy way of porting over all the features from the more advanced iPhone app, without having to re-code them for the tablet version. That means, for instance, that you can now access OneNote from the Notification Center on the iPad, the same way you already can with the iPhone. Microsoft also brought over the "recent notes" view, along with the ability to see page previews in landscape mode. Lastly, this update fixes a bug that caused problems with the whiteboard camera.

The Financial Times reports that Samsung and Apple are both in talks with theGSMA, the mobile telecom telecom industry association, to begin employingelectronic SIM cards in their mobile devices. Electronic SIMs (or e-SIMs) differ from their physical predecessors in that they don't lock users into a specific carrier network and would allow them to switch any device between an network instantly. So, remember how when the iPhone debuted, it was only available on AT&T? That won't happen with e-SIMs -- any phone, tablet or network-enabled gadget will work with any carrier that supports the technology. Apple itself actually tried its own take on e-SIMS with the last generation of iPads, though only T-Mobile and AT&T supported that feature.

Don't look now, but Samsung's widescreen Android tablets might be going the way of the Dodo. Tabletmonkeys claims to have leaked images of the Galaxy Tab S2, and the high-end slate appears to be adopting the same wide, iPad-like aspect ratio as the Galaxy Tab A. In fact, it might lose size and resolution compared to the original Tab S lineup -- instead of 8.4- and 10.5-inch 2,560 x 1,600 displays, you'd be looking at 8- and 9.7-inch 2,048 x 1,536 panels. That wouldn't be so hot for your widescreen videos, but it'd be better for web browsing and anything else that benefits from portrait mode viewing.

Cortana is here for Android ... sort of. Microsoft announced back in May that it would be bringing Cortana to Android, and it was expected to land this month to coincide with the release of Windows 10. But now it looks like an Android beta release of Microsoft's digital assistant has hit the web early, reports the Finnish mobile site Suomimobiili. We've installed the app on an HTC One M9 and it works just like you'd expect. You can ask Cortana about the weather or basic facts; have her call someone on your contact list; or set reminders. Unfortunately, you can't say "Hey Cortana" to get her attention yet -- even when you've got the app open. We don't expect this leaked Cortana copy to stick around for much longer, but it's a good sign that Microsoft is indeed getting close to an official release.

Marshall may be better known for its music equipment, but that isn't stopping the company from bringing a better audio experience to the smartphone market with its London handset. Given its highly customizable nature, it should come as no surprise that London runs Google's Android operating system (Lollipop 5.0.2). The London features dual front-facing speakers, a Wolfson WM8281 sound processor, Bluetooth atpX support, and a gold-tinged scroll wheel on the right side of the device that handle volume control, which Marshall says offers "tactile precision [that] allows you to find that sweet spot of sonic goodness." Once you get past the audio-centric functionality, there's a lot of lower-end hardware under the hood of the London. You'll find a 4.7-inch 720p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, LTE connectivity, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and a removable 2500 mAh battery. In other words, those specs make the London more in line with the Moto G.

Back in February, Adobe updated the iOS version of Lightroom to include a number of handy features. While the mobile-editing software has been on Android since January, today's update brings it up to par with the version for Apple's devices. This means that the ability to copy and paste edits from one image to another without having to retrace (retap?) your steps is now available for the Android faithful. There's a new crop tool as that makes quick alignment tweaks and auto-straightening a breeze. A segmented view in Collections allows for easy search and browsing of all your images, too. Of course, in order to get the most out of Lightroom mobile, you'll want to use it alongside a Creative Cloud subscription -- especially when it comes to syncing previews and changes from the desktop version. If you're ready to give it a shot, the update is available now from Google Play.

If you want everything Apple's iPhone can do except the "phone" part, the $400 cheaper 6th-gen iPod Touch is for you. It even has the iPhone 6's A8 chip, albeit running a tad slower. The iFixit team has taken the 4-inch device apart to view its guts and see whether Joe Shmoe could fix it with the right tools. Its findings? The Touch has a pretty nice camera for a music player, but lacks the iPhone's image stabilization and has a slightly slower f/2.4 iris. It's also missing the pricier sibling's touch sensor, but otherwise shares a surprising number of parts. And if it breaks? Unless you're prepared to heat, tweeze and pry, you'd best leave the fixing to Apple.

Samsung has revealed its new 8-inch and 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S2 models, and they're considerably different from last year. As revealed by a leak yesterday, it shrunk both of last year's models and killed the widescreen (16 x 10) aspect ratio, instead giving them an iPad-like 4 x 3 format. The company said that'll help "recreate the viewing experience of browsing through traditional print media," and make it easier to read e-books and web pages. On the other hand, less of the screen is now available for watching movies, particularly since both Galaxy Tab S2 models have also taken a step down in resolution from QuadHD to 2,048 x 1,536.

It's been almost three months since the Apple Watch launched, and the tiny device hasn't taken people's wrists by storm. That's not to say it's a failure — experts estimate Apple has sold between three and five million of them, and we may get more detailed sales information during their earnings call, tomorrow. But many major app developers are still missing from the Watch's catalog, and Apple doesn't have a good way of roping them into the new section of its ecosystem. "I don't know if we could get it all in there in a way that feels good and works well," said a Facebook executive. "Why would you look at a small picture when you can look at a large one on your phone?" said Snapchat's CEO. The app rush that hit phones and tablets is dampened for the Watch. For now, all Apple can do is improve their development toolkit and hope coders can figure out useful new wrist-based interactions.

Just like Taylor Swift in Bad Blood, Samsung has also found a powerful group of backers in its fight against Apple in court. According to a document unearthed by Inside Sources, Google, Facebook, eBay, Dell, HP and other big tech corporations have submitted a "friend of the court" brief on July 1st, supporting Samsung's stance. The two companies have been embroiled in legal fisticuffs for years, ever since Apple first filed a lawsuit against Samsungfor violating various intellectual properties, such as tap-to-zoom, single-finger scrolling and two-finger zooming, as well as edge-to-edge glass design, among other things.

Apple has been quiet on the number of Apple Watch units it has sold so far, but that's not stopping analysts from estimating.
Canalys says that Apple has become the 'world’s leading vendor of wearable bands' in Q2 2015, according to its estimates.
It reckons the watch has reached 4.2 million shipments, overtaking rivals Fitbit, Xiaomi and other smartwatch vendors, despite Apple's product having a higher price tag. Analyst Stifel, on the other hand, believes Apple has sold 3.3 million watches.
However, Canalys says that early sales were hindered, due to two factors. Firstly, because Apple missed the Q4 2014 holiday season and secondly, because supply constraints stalled shipments for the first couple months after launch.
"The Apple Watch is the most sophisticated smartwatch to date, and it has proved popular with Apple fans worldwide," said Chris Jones, VP and Principal Analyst at Canalys.
"But Apple and other vendors still face important challenges to make the smart watch a breakout hit. Improvements in performance, battery life and sensor integration are needed to make future models more attractive, but it is the quality of third-party apps that will determine whether the Apple Watch will be a long-term success."
Forbes reports that Apple will still be reluctant to share numbers when its next financial report is published. The tech giant is expected to push its Apple Watch sales into the 'other products' category, along with Beats headphones, Apple TV and accessories, making it difficult to find out just how well Apple Watch sold.
Last quarter Apple posted $1.7 billion in revenue in that category.
Some say Apple are keeping cards close to its chest as it doesn't want to share details with its competitors, while others suggest the company doesn't want everyone to know how poorly it has sold.
Research firm Slice Intelligence says that orders for the Apple Watch dropped 90 per cent since the device’s launch.

When the first Ubuntu phone came out, reviews were quick to criticize it for its lackluster hardware and unusual take on common mobile software interactions. It's been out for a while, now, and Alastair Stevenson has written about his experiences using it for an entire month. While he doesn't recommend it for phone users who aren't tech savvy, he does say that he began to like it better than Android after adjusting to how Ubuntu does things. From the article:[T]he Ubuntu OS has a completely reworked user interface that replaces the traditional home screen with a new system of "scopes." The scope system does away with the traditional mobile interface where applications are stored and accessed from a central series of homescreens. ... Adding to Ubuntu’s otherworldly, unique feel, the OS is also significantly more touch- and gesture-focused than iOS and Android. We found nearly all the key features and menus on the Meizu MX4 are accessed using gesture controls, not with screen shortcuts. ... Finally, there's my biggest criticism – Ubuntu phone is not smart enough yet. While the app selection is impressive for a prototype, in its infancy Ubuntu phone doesn't have enough data feeding into it, as key services are missing."

If you've ever wished that Sony would ditch its custom Android interface in favor of Google's 'pure' experience... well, you'll want to book an impromptu Scandinavian vacation. Sony is launching a 500-person Swedish trial of Concept for Android, a "stripped back" take on Android 5.1 for the Xperia Z3 that looks and feels like the stock Google interface while including Sony's more popular apps and features. If you're fortunate to be part of this test run, you'll both improve the software itself and shape Sony's overall strategy -- it's moving toward development based on "real user input" that will hopefully lead to more meaningful upgrades. And don't despair if you don't get in right now. The company is promising trials for more areas and more devices if this catches on, so you may still get a sneak peek at Sony's Android plans.

Kodi's media player got a name change last year and now it has something even better -- official Android status. The app formerly known as XBMC is now available on the Google Play store for all takers. It actually arrived to the store last month in beta form, but prior to that could only be sideloaded on Android. Version 15 (codenamed Isengard) now supports Android 5-specific features like 4K and variable refresh rates on certain Android TV devices, like NVIDIA's Shield. Another new trick on all platforms is "adaptive seeking" that lets you search material faster by tapping a key several times.

There comes a time in every person's life when they realize that they can't get people behave properly. As much as we all might want to stop people from recording vertical videos, the Periscopes and Snapchats of this world have made these clips so prevalent that, sadly, they're just not going to go away. Giving in to the inevitable, YouTube's Android App is getting the ability to play vertical videos in full screen, rather than constraining them to an awkward letterbox designed for landscape clips. The feature was found by AndroidPolicein version 10.28 of the app, which is likely to hit Google Play at some point in the near future. Before you sprint to download the APK ahead of its official launch, however, just remember that this means that the bad guys have won.

Well, would you look at that. Not long after it was reported that Apple had killed Home Sharing for music in iOS 8.4, the company appears to be ready to bring the feature back to life. As MacRumors points out, Home Sharing for music is now included in the fourth beta of iOS 9 for developers -- sorry, public testers, this isn't for you. Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, said earlier this month that his team was working on restoring the feature, even though there was no indication of when that would be happening. But now it's here, so go have at it if you're part of the iOS dev program.
Update 7/22: A day later, Apple has released a second iOS 9 public beta that gives you Home Sharing and other fixes from the latest developer version.

It's that time again — Apple just dropped its Q3 2015 earnings and despite missing Wall Street's always-lofty expectations, it's been a solid three months of growth thanks to the two usual suspects. Say it with us now, folks: It's all thanks to the iPhone and China. (If you're the sort who cares, Apple just missed most Wall Street estimates by posting earnings of $1.85 per share.)

Consumers might be buying fewer iPads, but Apple’s unlikely to run out of money anytime soon.
The tech titan has released its financials for its Q3 period, revealing that it generated nearly $11 billion in profit over the last three months. This is a good third higher than the same period last year.
Revenue alone was $50 billion, unsurprisingly propelled by sales of the iPhone, which shifted 47.5 million handsets – a 60 per cent bump on Q3 2014.
Of course, the quarter marked the first test for the firm’s new eponymous wearable, the Apple Watch, following its launch in April.
However, the company kept quiet on unit sales of the timepiece, bundling it into its ‘Other’ product category, which was up 49 per cent year-on-year in terms of revenue.
The ‘Services’ division was also up, growing 12 per cent on 2014’s figure, thanks to last month’s launch of the Apple Music streaming service.
The service boasts a free three-month trial, meaning that many users won’t be paying a penny for a few weeks to come, so that figure is likely to rocket in mid-September, should it prove a success.
Meanwhile, iPad sales continued to drop, down 23 per cent in year-on-year revenue, with CEO Tim Cook explaining back in October that the tablet range doesn’t see the same annual buy-and-replace lifecycle as its smaller mobile brethren, as people hang onto their pads for longer.
Apple remains particularly popular outside of the US, with international sales comprising nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of its revenue during Q3.

We were getting a little tired of playing Doom on every household applianceknown to man, office printers and even inside the game itself. That's why it's a nice change to see that it's now possible to play Half-Life on your Android smartwatch, thanks to software modder extraordinaire Dave Bennett. He's been able to squeeze SDLash3D, an open-source emulator for some of Valve's early titles, onto the LG's first generation G Watch. Unfortunately, playing the title from your wrist is problematic, since the frame rate can dip down pretty low and the small screen doesn't leave you a lot of room to use the soft controls. Still, anything's better than having to bum around Knee-Deep in the Dead for the millionth time when we're bored on a bus.

Google is getting serious about 360-degree video content. And it's not only about supporting it through YouTube or, by extension, Cardboard. The search giant's also behind an app called Spotlight Stories, which it created with Motorola in 2013 and has been on Android since. As of today, that applicationis also available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad -- as long as those devices are running a version of iOS 8. Google describes Spotlight Stories as a "mobile movie theater" that combines 3D and 2D animation with 360-degree spherical video, sphere audio and sensor-triggered interactions to create an immersive experience. Right now there are four stories you can watch: Buggy Night, Help, Duet and Windy Day, all of which are original and were created exclusively for Spotlight Stories.

Wish the original NVIDIA Shield Portable had Android 5.1 and Google Cast support? Now it does, but it comes at a price. A new, optional update for the Shield bestows the handheld with latest version of Lollipop, the ability to be a Chromecast / Google Cast source device and fixes a glitch that made Google Play Books unusable -- but in trade, it takes away Miracast support and permanently removes a handful of apps. Specifically, the update uninstallsSonic 4: Episode II, Expendable: Rearmed and the original Android browser for compatibility reasons. Bummer.
The update is optional -- but if you want the latest Android features on the aging device, you don't really have a choice. Check out the official update at the source link below.

Microsoft hasn't been shy to create miscellaneous software for Android. In the past, the company's released a smart lock screen and even made a keyboard designed to be used with Excel. Now Microsoft is working on its own Android launcher, currently dubbed Arrow Launcher Beta. As the name reveals, this is an early version of the product, and you can only get access to it by signing up for an invite to the testing program. So how does it work? The Arrow Launcher is sleek and straightforward, offering a quick view of three main pages: People, Apps and Notes & Reminders. Those pages, according to Microsoft News, can't be removed or have others added to them -- likely to keep things concise. You can give it a try by downloading the APK, but you'll need to request a proper invite to receive updates after the install.

Julie Uhrman, CEO of OUYA, has announced that she'll be leaving the Android gaming company that she co-founded. The executive took to Twitter to make the statement, spending the better part of an hour thanking employees, developers and backers. Her tweets also confirm the long-rumored purchase of the company by gaming PC specialist Razer that, until now, had only beenhinted at by third parties. The firm was one of the biggest early hits on Kickstarter, but when the micro-console was released to backers in July 2013, received plenty of criticism. Critics and users both attacked the build quality of the controller, game library and UI, and attempts to remedy the issue proved unsuccessful. Razer still hasn't spoken about what it plans to do with the hardware, but its plans will now be run without the input of the console's guiding light.

If you're an Android user, you'd better hope that a stranger doesn't send you a video message in the near future -- it might compromise your phone. Security researchers at Zimperium have discovered an exploit that lets attackers take control if they send a malware-laden MMS video. The kicker is that you may not even need to do anything to trigger the payload, depending on your text messaging app of choice. While the stock Messenger app won't do anything until you see the message, Hangouts' pre-processing for media attachments could put you at risk before you're even aware that there's a message waiting.

What do you do with old gadgets that you no longer use? Give them away to relatives, or throw them in the bin? Argos is the latest UK company to jumpinto the trade-in business, offering cash for your unwanted phones and tablets. Plenty of smartphone trade-in companies operate on the web, such asEnvirofone and Mazuma Mobile, but few have a high street presence like Argos. The company hopes that customers will prefer the convenience of walking into a store, getting a quote and then immediately receiving a gift card that can be used to buy something new. As the Guardian reports, Argos wants to expand the scheme to include cameras, laptops and other electrical devices in the future. Just like Game and CeX, however, its success will inevitably hinge on the prices being offered to consumers. If Argos is too stingy, the convenience will be irrelevant -- people will simply hold onto their devices or offload them through other avenues such as eBay.

July 27th, 2015, 22:40 Posted By: wraggster
Despite going on sale in April, we still don’t know how many Apple Watches have sold – and one analyst has said the silence is a sign of weakness.
Apple yesterday reported nearly $11bn in profit for the quarter ending June but didn’t reveal any unit sales for the new device, simply saying that the numbers were higher than the comparable launch periods for the first iPhone or iPad.
CEO Tim Cook said of the omission that it “was not a matter of not being transparent, it was a matter of not giving our competition insight that's a product that we've worked really hard on”. But analyst Leonid Bershidsky isn’t having any of it.
“No matter what analysts and the market think of the company's latest quarterly report, the company is still a juggernaut that can absorb any imaginable shock. At the same time, it's also weak in a way it wasn't under Steve Jobs. Apple has grown afraid of its own long shadow,” he told NZHerald.
“Jobs's Apple reported the sales of the first iPhone - 270,000 units - in its filing for the quarter ending on June 30th, 2007, even though the revolutionary phone went on sale on June 29th. Jobs's Apple likewise reported unit sales for the iPad in its first quarter on the market: 3.27m. That device created a new category, and there were strong reasons to keep competitors in the dark, but the company chose not to.”
So why did Cook stay quiet? Because, Bershidsky argued, it is scared of releasing numbers that fall short of the market’s expectations.
“The problem with releasing [the Apple Watch] numbers is not that it would help the competition. All competitors combined sold just 6.8m smartwatches in 2014. Apple has undoubtedly conquered the product category. But has it met the market's expectations? Not by a wide margin,” he added.
“Apple won't release its unit sales number because it's afraid of falling short. In Jobs's day, the company only needed to beat the competition and satisfy customers. Today, given the expectations, Cook knows he can never do enough.
“Since Jobs died, Apple has yet to come out with a life-changing new product. The company has been remarkably well-managed, successful and able to win over entire new swathes of the tech market. But its growth is still based on the Jobs legacy. And that's uncomfortable, like wearing shoes that are a size too big.”

Hardware developer Razer has acquired all of Ouya's software assets, the company announced today.
Farewell, Ouya console.
While Razer isn't buying the console itself, its acquisition of the software means it can use Ouya's tech in its own Android-based micro-console Forge TV. "In the near future, Razer will be providing existing Ouya users with a clear path of migration to the more advanced Forge TV micro-console and Serval controller bundle," Razer stated in its announcement.
"Razer's intention is to allow Ouya users to bring their games, controllers, and accounts to the Cortex TV platform on the Forge micro-console, advancing the experience of Android gaming on TV that they have previously enjoyed. Additionally, Razer is planning deep product discounts for incoming Ouya users to purchase Razer hardware, and a spate of freebies, giveaways, and promotions to enjoy on their new Forge consoles."
As such, it sounds like Forge TV will absorb everything an Ouya could do. Furthermore, the Ouya marketplace will be re-launched as Cortex for Android TV, which people will be able to access via Forge TV.
Razer will also be able to use the Ouya name. As such, it will "publish Android TV content and Android-based TV console games under the Ouya moniker as a separate interest."
"Razer has a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which Ouya already publishes," says Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. "Ouya's work with game developers, both triple A and indies, went a long way in bringing Android games to the living room and Razer intends to further that work. This acquisition is envisaged to usher more developers and content to the Android TV platform."
Hello Forge TV, soon to include Ouya content.
Wasteland creator Brian Fargo spoke highly of Razer regarding this acquisition. "When it comes to gamers, Min clearly knows what he is doing," he said. "I'm certain that he has clever ideas on how to make his many initiatives with Forge TV fit well with all the titles and hard work that Ouya put in."
The bulk of Ouya's staff, including its tech team and developer relations folk, will retain their jobs at Razer.
One person who won't be staying, however is Ouya founder and CEO Julie Uhrman. "Ouya was a once in a lifetime experience. Now, I'm off to find the next...stay tuned!" she said on Twitter, before thanking dozens of folks she worked with during her tenure there.
"Razer is the perfect home for Ouya and the team that made it all happen," Uhrman said of the acquisition. "They can take the Ouya platform to new places, inspiring developers and embracing gamers, everywhere."

Once upon a time, it looked like OUYA would be able to support itself as an independent gaming company focused on the Android-based, microconsole experience. In 2013, it even offered up $1 million to OUYA developers as part of an initiative called Free the Games Fund, which promised to match crowdfunded cash for certain OUYA projects. Dozens of developers got involved and were banking on OUYA's contributions to complete and ship their games, often tens of thousands of dollars per project. Now that Razer is officially purchasing OUYA, all of this cash is in question and the developers involved are not happy. "Razer/OUYA's insistence that these deals are gone is causing us to have to majorly restructure our plans leading up to release," one developer, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells Engadget.

Sure, the Google search box in Android lets you dictate regular text messages, but what if your conversations live in a non-standard chat app? You can relax as of today. Google now supports using your voice to send messages in English through a handful of third-party services, including WhatsApp, Viber, NextPlus, Telegram and WeChat. All you have to do is name the service when you're issuing the command -- "send a WhatsApp message to Bob" will make sure that your friend gets your missive where he's expecting it. More apps and languages are in the cards, so don't despair if your favorite mode of communication isn't compatible right away.

Periscope's latest version for iOS comes with a handful of useful features, including one for folks suffering from notification overload. Now, you can "mute" broadcasters you follow so you don't get a pop-up every time they go live. Don't worry about missing their shows, though -- their updates still appear on your feed. The global feed has also been revamped to feature broadcasts relevant to your interests and language preference. Plus, you can now take advantage of iOS 8's Handoff feature, which means that you can start watching a show on an iPhone or an iPad and transition to a MacBook without issues, and vice versa. Android users might notice that the the revamped global feed is now also available on their devices, and Periscope promises that the mute option will soon follow it to Google's platform.

That rumor of Samsung holding a phone event in August to beat Apple to the punch? At least some of it is true. The Korean tech giant has announced a second Galaxy Unpacked event that will take place in New York City on August 13th. It's not saying much about what's in store, but the curvy, imposing profile in the teaser image hints at the upsized Galaxy S6 Edge+ that we've seen in leaks -- and of course, the Galaxy Note line is nearly due for its yearly refresh. Whatever shows up, you can be sure that we'll be there to give you a closer look.

According to security firm Zimperium a flaw called "Stagefright" in Google's Android operating system can allow hackers take over a phone with a message even if the user doesn't open it. The vulnerability affects about 950 million Android devices. In a blog post Zimperium researchers wrote: "A fully weaponized successful attack could even delete the message before you see it. You will only see the notification. These vulnerabilities are extremely dangerous because they do not require that the victim take any action to be exploited. Unlike spear-phishing, where the victim needs to open a PDF file or a link sent by the attacker, this vulnerability can be triggered while you sleep. Before you wake up, the attacker will remove any signs of the device being compromised and you will continue your day as usual—with a trojaned phone."
