So the ROM included with the Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools refresh that was launched this week (to get it up to speed with the final release of Visual Studio 2010) has already been unlocked and torn apart over on xda-developers, and as you might expect, there are quite a few changes and additions in here versus what we've seen in the previous release. The most notable change appears to be the inclusion of Office, but we've also got dialer and in-call user interfaces, call history, call notifications (using Windows Phone 7's standard notification paradigm, of course), and a method for uninstalling apps. Clearly, we're still a long way from going final with this thing -- and fortunately, Microsoft has given itself basically the rest of the year to get it good and solid. Andele, ladies and gentlemen.

One of the biggest complaints with Android since the dawn of civilization is that the expansive plains of storage available on microSD cards have been left under-utilized; coldly ignored by the OS while it did everything it could to stuff the measly couple-hundred megs of internal storage with apps. Soon that problem will finally be rectified, with a Google representative closing the long-running Issue 1151. The issue, which covers external installation of apps, was opened in October of 2008 and since then was voted on by 2561 people, all of whom want Google to set their memory cards free. Exactly when this functionality is coming it remains to be seen, but the "coming soon" note in comment 535 is very encouraging. Froyo, anyone?

In an interview with the New York Times, Google's Andy Rubin confirmed that Android 2.2 will have support for Flash 10.1. Quoting: '[Rubin] promised that full support for Adobe’s Flash standard was coming in the next version of Android, code-named Froyo, for frozen yogurt (previous Android releases were called Cupcake, Donut and Eclair, and are represented outside Building 44 on the Google campus with giant sculptures of the desserts). Sometimes being open "means not being militant about the things consumers are actually enjoying," he said

Ryan Frawley still has a fair bit of work ahead of him, but his Wii Controller Demo app for Android sure holds an awful lot of promise. Available now for no charge (though a $1 paid version is available for those who dig his work), this here software allows Android users to create a Bluetooth link between their Wii remote and handset, and then log input information on the mobile's display. As of now, there's not a whole lot of value outside of Wiimote troubleshooting, but it's a few lines of code away from being able to act as a controller for gaming. Just think -- a Wiimote, your Android phone, an emulator, an HDMI output and four other nerds surrounding your television. Needless to say, we'll be keeping a close eye out for updates coming to this one.

Apple's decision to block third-party toolkits and middleware -- particularly Flash -- from being used to develop iPhone and iPad apps has certainly prompted a fair amount of debate around the web, and now it sounds like Steve and the gang might face some even harsher scrutiny: a single-sourced piece in the New York Post reports that the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are currently tussling over which agency should be tasked with a potential antitrust inquiry into the matter. That would certainly make some noise in the industry, but it doesn't mean much for those of us here in reality quite yet: assuming the report is true, an inquiry would still just be the very first step -- whichever agency is ultimately put in charge would then have to launch a formal investigation and then finally file and win a lawsuit for any changes to occur. That's a timeframe measured in months, if not years.
All that said, we can see why the feds are interested: Apple's slowly moving into an ever-more dominant position in the mobile market, and forcing developers to make a hard choice about which platforms to target certainly puts the squeeze on competitors. We'll be following this one closely -- stay tuned.

We could hear the echoing howls of discontent over the weekend as thousands finally received their very own iPad 3G and learned they couldn't watch Dancing With the Stars whilst on the go. Now we have the details on why, exactly, and the repercussions. As it turns out, it's simply a carry-over of an iPhone OS HTTP Live Streaming rule that states quite clearly:
You must include a low quality stream of no more than 64 Kbps for your app to resort to when network conditions demand it, along with the higher quality streams you want to deliver to your customers when the network can support it.
It seems the ABC Player devs chose to skip that option, so when you lose WiFi you also lose Tom Bergeron's charm and wit. Other apps, like Netflix and YouTube, do provide a lower bitrate fallback, but that of course results in nasty compression artifacts when on the go. In other words: there's a very good chance that 3G streaming will come in a future ABC Player release, but when it does it ain't gonna be pretty.

Well, what have we here? A friendly tipster, who just so happens to be a registered Palm developer, has sent us the latest informational email from the recently-swallowed outfit, and while the tone here may be gentle, the implications are certainly serious. According to the memo, a new webOS update is "coming soon," and developers are being alerted that they'll need to be prepared to test their apps when it hits. Sometime early this month, devs will receive a specific launch date for the SDK release candidate, and while we're told that the "scope of the changes in this [forthcoming] update is limited," it'll be particularly important for coders to "test PDK apps against this release candidate." Seems like that promise of seeing PDK apps hitting the Catalog by mid-year is on track, acquisition be darned.

Apple claims to have sold 1 million units of its "magical, revolutionary" iPad since it became available on April 3. If that wasn't enough sales news for you, Apple also says that "users have already downloaded over 12 million apps ... and over 1.5 million ebooks." Not quite a celestial steed's worth of return on investment, but presumably a healthy bounty no less.
And what do the next 28 days have in store for the iPad? We have to imagine that some folks have been heeding our call for various games to make their way to the handheld. Where's that giant beer app we requested, ehhh? Someone get on that, stat!

We've been seeing the iPad / iPhone Spirit jailbreak demoed here and there for a few weeks now, and here we go -- the download is now available. The untethered jailbreak works on activated iPhone OS devices running 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2, although iPad owners are warned that "all this is still sort of beta" and might require you to restore if things break. That's not the worst thing in the world, we suppose -- anyone taking the plunge?

The ScummVM Team have released a new version of ScummVM for many consoles such as Wii,PSP, Gamecube, GP2x, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Iphone and Playstation 2.
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky and Broken Sword I & II; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.
Only four weeks since our last release and already ScummVM 1.1.1 is available on our downloads page.
This release concentrates primarily on fixing bugs, bugs, and even more bugs. As such, we strongly recommend all and every ScummVM user to update to this latest and greatest version. In particular, just as promised we fixed the issues affecting Nippon Safes Inc and Pajama Sam 1 in 1.1.0.

World of Warcraft? There isn't an app for that (yet) on iPhone or iPad. But it seems WoW fans could be getting their fix via tablet sooner rather than later.
David Perry, boss of cloud-gaming startup Gaikai, has posted a screenshot of World of Warcraft running on an iPad, via his company's streaming technology.
"We're really interested to see what works well with streaming and will be trying just about every genre of game, on every device possible as we explore server-side computing," writes Perry.
The idea behind Gaikai - and rivals like OnLive and Otoy - is that games are run on servers, which effectively then stream the video feed down to a local computer or device, and stream the player's actions back up.
The main use is to play processor-hungry games on PCs that wouldn't be able to run them locally, but iPad is clearly an interesting offshoot.
There are two problems though. First, wouldn't hardcore World of Warcraft players buy a full-size laptop to run it on the move, rather than a buttonless iPad?
Secondly, there's a big question over whether Apple will allow the Gaikai client onto its App Store, given its determination to ensure that games are developed specifically for iPhone, rather than ported (or indeed streamed) from other platforms.

Firemint's Alexandra Peters has said that the days of betting small and expecting to win big on iPhone games are gone, and expressed her view that commercial successes now require significant investment.
"I think the days where you can do something quite simple, and do it on a small budget, are probably gone," Peters told GamesIndustry.biz in an interview published today.
"These days with the amount of apps that are out there, and the increasing number of games coming out every day - and some of the really high-end developers who are now getting into it - I think if you're going to make an iPhone game and you want it to be commercially successful, you have to invest in it.
"That's certainly something that we're doing - we're spending a lot of time getting our next titles right. I wouldn't encourage people to bet small and expect to win big."
Firemint is now best known for two iPhone titles - Flight Control, which Peters describes as "ultra casual" with a modest budget, and Real Racing, which was developed on a budget of over $1 million.
Prior to the introduction of the iPhone and developing those two titles, Firemint worked mostly making mobile games for other companies, said Peters. However she said it was the App Store, not the iPhone, that revolutionised business for the studio and for small developers overall.
"People talk about the iPhone as being really revolutionary, but the massive change has really come about because of the App Store - and the fact that Apple was able to push that through has been a massive achievement when you consider how fragmented the mobile phone ecosystem was before that," she explained.
"We're really proud to say we're an iPhone developer, and it's a brilliant platform to develop for - it's really enabled this change in our business where we've been able to do less work-for-hire and more of our own games.
"You have this distribution platform that takes the game all over the world, handles all of the financial side for you, and essentially you just get some money in your account at the end of the day. It's unprecedented.
"As a studio, changing from work-for-hire to self-publishing and taking on a lot of those publisher functions - if we'd had to do all of the distribution and financial aspects as well, it might have been an insurmountable obstacle. It's empowered us to do original IP."
Peters said that Flight Control had sold in quantities of over 2 million to date - "some developers announce numbers and say "downloads" and that's a mix of free and paid - but this one's had 2 million sales" - while a free version of Real Racing has been downloaded over 5 million times and led to an increase in sales of the full game.
You can read the full interview with Peters in which she also discusses original IPs, the issue of visibility in the App Store and the effect of word-of-mouth marketing for iPhone games, here.

The media are often a bit last-generation when it comes to next-generation technology.
The first TV shows were often a bloke reading things off bits of paper (i.e. radio) or a single camera pointed at a stage (i.e. theatre), while people got to grips with the medium's potential.
Likewise, the early days of the web saw many sites that looked like (or indeed were) scanned-in print leaflets.
iPad media apps feel a bit similar: some newspapers are going the literal route of making apps that look like... print newspapers. When in fact, a news app is likely to evolve into something far more interactive and, well, next-generation.
That's a long-winded intro to an event called Hacks/Hackers Unite, which takes place in San Francisco on May 21-23. The idea: pair journalists with coders to create "the killer media app for the iPad".
It's a great idea, and one that will hopefully throw up some imaginative prototypes. Judges include representatives from Y Combinator and Current TV.

The last time Apple dropped a release of iPhone OS 4.0, it left more than a few downloaders in crumpled heaps on the floor, sobbing quietly to themselves as they tried desperately to come to terms with the fact that their beloved iPhones were far less usable than they had been just a few minutes prior. Well, we don't know yet if beta 3 is any better, but it's here -- and if you're a member of Apple's iPhone dev program, it's ready for you to install. So yeah -- take care, good luck, godspeed, be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best. Let us know how it goes in comments, yeah?

Hot on the heels of the "ornamental design" patent covering its original iPhone and iPod touch, we've got a second USPTO patent granted to Apple covering what looks to be the more curvaceous iPhone 3G and 3GS. Jonathan P. Ive and Steve Jobs are among the inventors credited with the usual list of references including the LG KE850 Prada and Meizu M8 look-a-like devices. Don't get too hung up on the missing "home" button -- a US design patent covers any device "substantially similar" to the images above. What that means only a judge can say.

A method to Jailbreak the new 3.1.3 iPhone rom is here and it does away with tethering. Tethering is the problem that arose from the blackra1n exploit requiring a computer to reboot the iPhone. Although we saw a hardware workaround for that, it’s much nicer to do away with the issue completely. The new exploit is called Spirit and we found the site was getting hammered earlier so you should check out the writeup over at Redmond Pie if you can’t get through with the link at the top.

The first product to result from an alliance between Finnish phone maker Nokia and software firm Microsoft has been launched.
The Microsoft Communicator Mobile software allows business people to see colleagues availability and message them via e-mail, text, phone or IM.
The firms will offer phones running Microsoft Office later in the year.
The two firms announced the alliance - aimed at breaking the dominance of Blakberry - in August 2009.
At the time, Robert Andersson said it was aimed at toppling market leader Research in Motion, the maker of the Blackberry, for business people.
"This is giving some of our competitors - let's spell it out, Research in Motion (RIM) - a run for their money," he said at the time.
"I don't think Blackberry has seen this kind of competition."
The two firms were originally fierce rivals in the nascent smartphone market, but have faced increased competiion from latecomers such as Apple.
The new software will initially run on Nokia E52 and E72 phones running the Symbian operating system. Other handsets will follow.
Microsoft Communicator Mobile has previously been available for phones running Java.

44% of US consumers planning to buy an iPad are buying it instead of a netbook or notebook laptop, according to a Morgan Stanley/Alphawise survey conducted in March.
The results were published in a report by Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, which Fortune has some extracts from.
The survey also found that 41% of planned iPad buyers would choose the device instead of an iPod touch, although we're guessing that's not a huge headache for Apple at the moment.
The cannibalisation ratio for e-readers like Amazon's Kindle was 28%, while for handheld games devices like Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS it was 17%.
It would be interesting to see how these results change - if at all - in any new survey, now that the iPad is available in the US.

Though Konami’s iPES app released in late 2009 didn’t deliver on the promise of pocket football, the announcement of a proper release for PES 2010 on iPhone should make up for the disappointment.
Timed to coincide with the World Cup in South Africa, the fully 3D title will offer an approximation of the arcade action offered in the console versions though an iPhone-specific control scheme is promised.
Also included are Champions League and Europa League game modes, though early reports make no mention of either the Master League or online gameplay.
“To bring a game as complex and as playable as PES 2010 to iPhone and iPod touch has been a daunting challenge, but one that has paid off,” the game’s producer Axel de Rougé stated.
“We have been working to ensure that all the slick moves and control – not to mention strong AI and aesthetic touches – that are associated with the series, have been recreated. We are confident we have produced the best football game available for the Apple systems, and look forward to its reception in June.”
The price of the game has yet to be confirmed (expect anything between Ł2.99 and Ł5.99), though it's due to hit the App Store in June where it will face competition from similar titles like FIFA 10, Real Football 2010 and X2 Football 2010.

medcalf notes that Game designer Ian Bogost enters the debate about Flash by saying
"[A] large number of developers seem to think that they have the right to make software for the iPhone (or for anything else) in Flash, or in another high-level environment of their choosing. Literally, the right, not just the convenience or the opportunity. And many of them are quite churlish about the matter. This strikes me as a very strange sort of attitude to adopt. There's no question that Flash is useful and popular, and it has a large and committed user base. There's also no question that it's often convenient to be able to program for different platforms using environments one already knows. And likewise, there's a long history of creating OS stubs or wrappers or other sorts of gizmos to make it possible to run code 'alien' to a platform in a fashion that makes it feel more native. But what does it say about the state of programming practice writ large when so many developers believe that their 'rights' are trampled because they cannot write programs for a particular device in a particular language? Or that their 'freedom' as creators is squelched for the same reason?"

Opera Software already caused quite a stir with the release of the iPhone version of its browser, and it looks like it's now starting to make itself heard in one of the biggest browser-related debates going. Speaking with Tech Radar, Opera's product analyst Phillip Grřnvold started out with something of a diplomatic approach by saying that "today's internet content is dependent on Flash" and "if you remove Flash you do not have today's internet," and for that reason Opera needs to support Flash. Things get a bit more interesting from there, however, with Grřnvold stating that while Flash has its place for things like dynamic content, it "makes very little sense" as a video container given the impact on processor and battery usage, adding that "you can cook an egg on [devices] once you start running Flash on them and there's a reason for that." Fried eggs, potatoes -- these browsers sure are making us hungry.

Last time on let's-speculate-about-Apple-products, the New iPhone rumor mill dug up dirt on video chat and a 5 megapixel camera. Now, it appears there might be one more reason to call it the iPhone HD. MacRumors reports that the iPhone SDK 4 beta includes the value "AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720," leading some to believe Cupertino's next phone will record video in 720p. Mind you, the iPhone 3GS was technically already capable of that feat, so this might not have anything to do with a new handset, but honestly, at this point the iPhone's camera wouldn't be competitive recording in a smaller format anyhow.

Space Miner developer Venan Entertainment has returned to the iPhone and iPod Touch with the gloriously named Ninjatown: Trees of Doom. Based on the cult collectible Ninjatown toys created by Chicago design studio Shawnimals, the game offers a colourful action strategy romp where the titular shinobis must prove their worth as warriors.
Cast as a youthful ninja charged with satisfying the demands of his master, Trees of Doom players must ascend through towering forest canopies tackling demons, dodging fireballs, and collecting power-ups.
As wells as featuring integrated Plus+ technology that allows for global leaderboard use and in-game 'awards', Trees of Doom includes the Facebook and Twitter support that is rapidly becoming a standard of iPhone games.
“Ninjatown: Trees of Doom! falls into the ‘go as far as you can’ genre on the iPhone." said Brandon Curiel, CEO at Venan. "Our goal was to inject sophistication and strategy to this kind of game.”
“Humour and adorableness was important too,” added Shawn Smith, creator of Shawnimals. “Micro-sized, yet, endlessly replayable games are where the iPhone really shines as a game platform, and I think we’ve cooked up something special.”
Ninjatown: Trees of Doom is available on the App Store now for Ł1.19 or $1.99.

Nokia has filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five of its patents.
In a short statement Nokia said the patents relate to 'technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices.
'These patented innovations are important to Nokia's success as they allow improved product performance and design.'
Nokia's decision to sue Apple ups the stakes even further is a smartphone war that already this year has seen Apple sue HTC for infringing on 20 patents related to iPhone's 'user interface, underlying architecture and hardware'.
The fact that Nokia's action includes the iPad is hugely significant.
Paul Melin, General Manager, Patent Licensing at Nokia, said: "Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices. We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation."
The statement added that Nokia has invested €40 billion in R&D over the last 20 years and owns over 11,000 patent families.

You'll recall, studious little gremlins that you are, that we recently saw the venerable first-gen iPhone prancing about with an unusual little green droid providing it with operational commands. Well, the coder behind that project, David Wang, has now stepped his game up to the iPhone 3G, which has been outfitted with an almost complete implementation of Android. Audio support is the last missing piece of the puzzle, but the groundwork has been laid and it too should be ready for some unholy Apple plus Google action within the next few days. Downloadable binaries are currently being prepared

Looks like that iPad Camera Connection Kit isn't as overpriced as we thought; not only does it have USB headset and keyboard support, but one enterprising user has hooked up an external hard drive using the dongle as well. Max Shay has an exhaustive walkthrough at his personal website, but the gist of the matter is that you'll need a jailbroken iPad, a split-USB cable to give that drive some extra juice, and a terminal of some sort (Max used his MacBook) to trick the iPad into mounting your external storage, after you use SSH to tunnel through. The result is an unwieldy wired assembly we wouldn't be caught dead with in public, but perhaps useful in a pinch -- or as the latest proof of what the iPad could do if only Apple would let it.

Apple has announced a new release date for the UK launch of the iPad.
The new device will now hit British shops on Friday 28th May. It will launch in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland on the same day.
Apple's online store will begin taking pre-orders on Monday 10th May. The 16GB iPad will carry a suggested retail price of Ł429, while the 32GB version will cost Ł499 and the 64GB is Ł599. The 3G-enabled models will be priced at Ł529 for 16GB, Ł599 for 32GB and Ł699 for 64GB.
The European launch of the iPad was previously delayed due to huge demand in the US, where more than 1 million iPads have already been sold.

To say that Apple's iPad has driven the tablet market straight into an era of revival would be understating things greatly, and one million units later, we're here to ask the earliest of adopters how they'd tweak things if they were ever lucky enough to take over where Jonathan Ive left off. We already know that select changes are coming in iPhone OS 4.0, and the recent Spirit jailbreak has also opened up a whole new world of possibilities, but there's always work to be done, right? Would you have included a USB port and SD card slot along the edges? Designed it for use on other carriers? Made the screen a bit bigger / smaller? Thrown in a front-facing camera? Go on, spill your deepest, darkest wishes for Apple's first tablet in comments below. Someone will listen, we promise.

The world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia, has filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming the iPad 3G and iPhone infringe five of its patents.
Nokia claims the infringements involve technology used to enhance speech and data transmission and antenna innovations for compact devices.
This is the latest salvo in a long-running legal battle between the two companies.
Nokia and Apple are embroiled in another dispute concerning the iPhone.
"We've taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation," said Paul Melin, general manager of patent licensing at Nokia.
In a statement, the company said that during the past two decades Nokia has invested about $51bn (Ł34bn) in research and development and has rounded up 11,000 patents.
Last year Nokia filed a similar lawsuit which claimed that various Apple products infringed Nokia patents. Apple responded with a countersuit against Nokia for infringing Apple patents with its smartphones.
Meanwhile, Apple is also involved in another legal row with Taiwan's HTC, maker of Google's Nexus One phone, which it says has infringed patented technology.
Patent disputes are common in the technology industry and often end with some kind of licensing agreement, correspondents say.
The Nokia lawsuit came on the day Apple announced that its iPad tablet computer will go on sale in nine countries outside the US on 28 May.

Paul Thurrott, the prolific technology analyst and Windows expert, reacts strongly to an article highlighted on Slashdot. Thurrott takes numbers from IDC and the Wall Street Journal, indicating that netbook sales have not in any meaningful way been affected by sales of Apple's tablet computer, the iPad. Money quote: '[N]etbooks and sub-12-inch machines will sell 45.6 million units in 2011 and 60.3 million in 2013. If I remember the numbers from 2009, they were 10 percent of all PCs, or about 30 million units. Explain again how the iPad will beat that. Please. Even the craziest iPad sales predictions are a small percentage of that.

This is thinking outside the box ... or head. Dr. Matthew Bromwich of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario has written an iPhone app to help doctors with the Epley maneuver to cure some forms of vertigo. The patient places the iPhone against his or her forehead and the app leads the doctor through the maneuver. Bromwich's first attempt at the app sounded even more fun. With that version, the iPhone hung from the front of a baseball cap the patient wore, and the patient tried to keep a ball centered in a twisting tube by moving their head. Winning the game meant the maneuver had been successfully completed and the vertigo cured.

The pun is so obvious it practically insults your intelligence, but we just can't help ourselves -- the iPad has just gotten a little more magical. Using the BTstack application that brought Bluetooth mouse support to iPhone, enterprising individuals discovered the same technique works on a jailbroken iPad as well, and hooked up Apple's own Magic Mouse to show it off to the world. Mind you, while this implementation does look quite useful, we do detect the barest hint of lag -- so it may not be your weapon of choice for pixel-doubled Doom sessions.

Apple may have a rival for Flash in the pipeline, after it has been revealed that the company is already using its Gianduia framework for a number of web applications.
According to AppleInsider, the software, which was unveiled last year, has been used to create web app clients, Apple’s One-to-One program, the iPhone reservation system and the Concierge service for Genius Bar reservations.
These utilisations demonstrate that the Gianduia framework does not require HTML5 for implementation and can work alongside existing web standards.
It has been speculated that Apple may push Giandula, under the pretext that it is tested and ready, whereas HTML5 isnt.

The release of the iPad has impacted sales of a range of mobile devices in the US, most heavily the netbook segment, according to data from Morgan Stanley Research.
According to the findings, the netbook segment has fallen from a growth rate of 641 per cent in July 2009, to just five per cent in April this year – the month that the iPad was released.
However, the interpretation of these results has found some controversy, with the Windows Supersite Blog citing IDC results that suggest that the netbook segment slowdown was “as a result of stronger-than-expected sales of larger, full-featured (and more expensive) Windows 7 notebooks.”
“IDC is now forecasting that ‘mininotebooks’ will sell 45.6 million units in 2011 and 60.3 million in 2013,” wrote Windows Supersite’s Paul Thurrott.
“If I remember the numbers from 2009, they were 10 percent of all PCs, or about 30 million units. Explain again how the iPad will beat that. Please. Even the craziest iPad sales predictions are a small percentage of that.”

Devices powered by Google's Android OS accounted for 28 per cent of US smartphone sales in 1Q10, eclipsing Apple to take the number-two position behind RIM (36 per cent), according to market tracker NPD.
The figures, garnered from online consumer surveys (and excluding corporate/enterprise sales), place Apple's OSX (i.e. iPhone) in third place on 21 per cent.
NPD says Android's share has been boosted by increased operator support, particularly from Verizon Wireless, which has been pushing Motorola's Droid and Droid Eris devices.
Devices sold through AT&T comprised nearly a third of the US smartphone market during the quarter (32 per cent), followed by Verizon Wireless (30 per cent), T-Mobile (17 per cent) and Sprint (15 per cent).

"We're number two" might not be the chant everyone's after, but we have a feeling that Google is more than satisfied with that in this case... for now. According to market research firm NPD, Google's Android operating system edged up into second place in the US smartphone market during the first quarter of the year, leaving it still well behind RIM's BlackBerry OS, but marking the first time that it has moved ahead of Apple's iPhone OS. Specifically, NPD found that RIM maintained a strong 36 percent market share for the quarter, with Android coming in at 28 percent, and iPhone OS in third at 21 percent. The growth for Android was attributed largely to strong carrier support -- like Verizon's buy-one-get-one free offer which, incidentally, also helped Verizon maintain a 30 percent smartphone market share, which is just slightly behind AT&T at 32 percent, and ahead of T-Mobile and Sprint at 17 and 15 percent, respectively.

There's a Bluetooth multiplayer battle mode, and it's the first Revenge game to include "narrative vignettes" for each track, offering snippets about the band and their music.
The app will be available on Wednesday, and will cost $4.99 on the App Store. Nirvana join Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Coldplay (among others) in Tapulous' stable. Now THAT'S a supergroup.

David Hockney's digital painting experimentation has been extended to Apple's iPad.
Talking to the London Evening Standard the artist said he has been creating pictures by 'painting' directly onto the iPad's touchscreen, an act that he says could herald a return for traditional drawing techniques.
Last year it emerged that the 72 year-old Hockney - famous for his work as part of the 1960s pop art movement - was using his iPhone to create and distribute digital artwork.
But its seems stills aren't his only interest - Hockney has also been using the iPad to watch his own films and playback recordings of the paintings as they were created on-screen.

iStream is an application which consist of a client and a server and should allow converting and streaming of videos (3gp, avi, xvid, divx, flv, mkv, mod, mov, mp4, mpg, wmv) directly from your android mobile device, either via wifi or 3G. It's currently in development, but already usable. The free version of the application should be able to stream your previously converted movies, while the paid one has the option to convert them directly from your device, and stream them (almost) on the fly.
This application has been developped for converting movies from the android iStream client application (running on your android device) then streaming them from the server when they are finally converted (which can take some time depending on the server cpu speed), and should work fine. The "stream on the fly" option has been added later, and could be more bugged, while it seems to work fine here (with a fast server running the iStreamServer application, and a good 3G/WiFi connection).

We've been intrigued by the Square Payment System since it first ditched its Squirrel costume back in 2009, and now it appears we're on the eve (or eve of the eve, or pretty close anyway) to its release for not only the iPhone, but for the iPad and for Android as well. The software is said to be hitting App Stores and Markets this week, working with a sugar cube-sized card reader that pops into the 3.5mm headphone jack, a device that the company is giving away for free to those who sign up. Using it will not be free, with retailers paying fees starting at 2.75 percent plus a 15 cent surcharge, but that's considerably cheaper than many other options out there (which often require costly hardware to boot). There's another new video after the break, and we can't wait for these things to start showing up at the farmer's market. No more early morning ATM runs!

We'd been wondering how and when HTC would respond to Apple's patent lawsuit, and here we go: the Taiwanese phone manufacturer just filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, asking for importation and sales of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod be halted due to alleged infringement of five patents. ITC complaints like this are pretty familiar territory -- you'll recall that Nokia and Apple have both asked for similar bans in their lawsuit against each other -- but the interesting wrinkle here is that HTC apparently hasn't filed a corresponding federal lawsuit. We'll see if that's the next step for HTC down the line -- for now, we're digging into what patents are involved in the ITC complaint, so stay tuned.

I decided to make one more release for the 5th edition since the Qt + SwEvent is only working on Nokia’s phones. I’ll be using Qt from now on, and I recommend all Nokia users to take the Qt version, not this one.
Thanks for Saiyaku for the new D-pad graphics.
What’s new
Improved compatibility? (the code is much better aligned with drPocketSnes)
In this update the d-pad is now optimized for resistive screen, and the red/green/menu buttons can be mapped as buttons in the key config digalog.
The Big D-Pad
know issues:
Audio isn’t working
It’s final realease without Qt

The Boy's are at it feuding again today
Adobe launched an advertising campaign Thursday that takes an unexpected tack in its ongoing feud with Apple: proclaiming, in huge letters, Adobe’s love for the computer giant.
Make no mistake, though, it’s not a make-nice ad campaign by Adobe. In the ads, which are running in traditional newspapers and major news and technology sites online, Adobe also says it loves Flash — the Adobe software at the heart of the dispute with Apple. And Adobe makes it clear that it is unhappy with Apple’s decision to limit the software that can run on its iPhone system, which Adobe alludes to as “anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web.”
The ads are accompanied by a site that touts choice and openness in technology and by an essay from Adobe’s founders, Chuck Geschke and John Warnock in which they say they “believe open markets are in the best interest of developers, content owners, and consumers.”
The ads themselves don’t make it immediately clear, though, what Adobe is hoping to get out of the campaign. At this point, it seems unlikely that Apple will change its policies unless it is forced to. The Journal has reported that the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are considering an investigation of Apple’s contract with developers, in which it prevents them from using the sort of software that would allow them to build their products in Flash and have that converted to run on the iPhone operating system. Apple’s argument is that such middleman software makes for a poorer experience for users.
In addition Microsoft has said that although it is supportive of Flash, there are problems with the software, which is currently responsible for running most video on the Web. As the Web transitions to a new coding standard called HTML5, there may eventually be less need for Flash to run videos.
But Adobe says the campaign is targeted not at Apple but at Adobe’s customers, employees and partners, including software developers, ad firms and media companies, which are heavy users of Adobe’s creative software.
“The intent of the campaign is to give us an opportunity to formally state our position,” said Ann Lewnes, Adobe’s senior vice president of global marketing, in an interview with Digits. Adobe employees have made statements about the issue, but the company has not put together a formal effort to counter claims begin made by Apple, and Ms. Lewnes said employees and customers have been asking for such an effort.
Adobe, she said, wants “people to really pause and think about whether they’re comfortable having one company control the overall Web.”
Whether Apple could control the overall Web is up for debate. The current argument involves its iPhone operating system, and the company has only about 25% of the overall market based on handset operating systems, according to comScore. Ms. Lewnes said Adobe is “confident in the competition” in the mobile area but wants to address Apple’s actions in part because Apple “has great products and they’re first into market.” Even if customers have increasing choices in smart phones “we still don’t believe that restrictions should be imposed on creativity,” she said.
She added that the campaign, which will be expanding, also calls attention to the benefits of Flash specifically. Adobe has a number of other programs available, but the ads are mentioning Flash specifically because so much attention has been focused on that software. Ms. Lewnes said more than 3.5 million developers are using Flash and that this number was up 59% in 2009.
On the Adobe site, a page is devoted to countering claims made about Flash itself. In particular, Adobe emphasizes that Flash “has full support for working on touch-based devices” and that, according to tech security firm Symantec, Flash “had the second fewest number of vulnerabilities of all Internet technologies listed” in 2009.
UPDATE: Apple says it believes “in open Web standards too.” But “Flash is not an open Web standard like HTML,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “It is a proprietary Adobe product. Just ask the W3 consortium that controls Web standards. They have chosen HTML5 as the open web standard to move forward with.”

[Pikipirs] developed an app that lets you connect a Wii remote to an Android phone. After the break you can see it used with a Sega emulator. The button presses seem very responsive, making for a nice gaming addition if you care to carry around the Wiimote in addition to your phone. It certainly seems to work better than the Wii remote + iPhone hacks we’ve seen. Pick it up from the Android store or download the APK from the thread linked at the top. This is an alpha version so don’t be shocked if it’s buggy.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that video game industry revenue fell by 26 percent in April, adding more concerns about the health of the industry in the worst year-over-year decline since July 2009. But the big news is that the decline in portable sales makes up 61 percent of the overall monthly decline, suggesting that the Nintendo DS platform is losing steam but also reflecting the growing clout of the iPhone platform as the iPhone and iPod Touch continue to draw in more casual gamers, the iPad offers a bigger screen experience, and Apple announces the 'Game Center' — a social gaming hub with console-like online gaming features. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata is understood to have told his senior executives recently to regard the battle with Sony as a victory already won and to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the 'enemy of the future.' 'If Nintendo's future mobile platforms are to be any kind of success, the company will have to figure out how to take on the ease of use afforded by the App Store,' writes Nicholas Deleon. A large part of Nintendo's faith in reviving its efforts hinge on the 3DS, which may ship in the fall, the first truly major handheld introduction for Nintendo since the original DS in 2004. He adds, 'Maybe Nintendo should just release a phone?'

kriston writes in about a new development with the Cherrypal mini laptop, which we discussed last December.
"The Cherrypal Asia laptop is now shipping with Google Android installed (product page). This replaces the older Cherrypal Asia mini laptops that were running either Windows CE or a custom Linux. The $148 version has a 1024x600 screen while the sub-$100 model runs 800x480. Both laptops run the ARM9-based VIA 8505 SoIC platform at 533 MHz with 256 megabytes of RAM and 2 gigabytes of NAND flash. I'm looking forward to seeing how Android can squeeze more throughput out of the VIA 8505, since Windows CE didn't do such a great job on the original Cherrypal Asia."

If we've learned anything from the long gestation of the SlingPlayer iPhone app, it's that folks want to stream video to their iPhone, iPad, and / or iPod touch. At least the folks at Hauppauge think so -- and the new version (v7.2) of WinTV for the WinTV -HVR tuner board for the PC now includes that functionality. Indeed, the software will even stream 16 and Pregnant (or whatever it is you're into these days) to your Mac computer. Sadly, all of this streaming is going down via WiFi, but who knows? Maybe you really want to record TV on one machine and then watch it five feet away. It will be available directly from Hauppauge for $9.95, although the company is making a free upgrade available to current owners of WinTV-HVRs. PR after the break.

Konami has announced a Castlevania puzzle game for iPhone and iPod Touch. There's no mention of iPad.
The game, named Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night, will be "available soon", with pricing still to be announced.
Like genre-starter Puzzle Quest, Encore of the Night marries RPG with puzzle game underbelly. Here the puzzle emulates Dr. Mario, and requires gem colours to be matched in lines. These gems drop in pairs and may need rearranging before they settle.
While doing this, Castlevania characters duke it out centre screen. Heroes can be upgraded with new items as the story unfolds.

[Aaron Nelson] tipped us off about a simple hack to use an iPad SIM with an iPhone. You won’t be able to use the iPhone as a phone, but the relatively cheap $29.99 for unlimited Internet was his goal. He used an old plastic gift card to cut out an adapter for the iPad’s micro SIM so that it will fit into the iPhone’s SIM cradle as seen above. From there he used a web service via the WiFi connection to enter “Broadband” as a custom APN.

Google has announced that it's abandoning its attempt to sell Android handsets direct to consumers from its own webstore.
The company launched the site to sell its Nexus One handset early this year. The idea was that people would buy the phone and then choose an operator price plan.
Well, it didn't work out so well. Sales of the Nexus One have been slow, and in Europe it's now being sold through Vodafone in the traditional way.
In fairness, Google's VP of engineering Andy Rubin hasn't danced around the subject in his blog post announcing the webstore's closure:
"As with every innovation, some parts worked better than others. While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from."
For now, Google will continue to sign carrier deals for the Nexus One, which will be sold in (real-world) stores. Meanwhile, the Google.com/phone site will become a showcase for Android phones.
"Innovation requires constant iteration," writes Rubin. We believe that the changes we're announcing today will help get more phones to more people quicker, which is good for the entire Android ecosystem: users, partners and also Google."

The same judge who issued the warrant to search Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's apartment has now ordered it unsealed, ruling against the San Mateo County district attorney's office which had argued that unsealing the documents may compromise the investigation."
You can read the entire affidavit here (PDF). It has a detailed description of the police investigation that led to the seizure of Chen's computers. It turns out Steve Jobs personally requested that the phone be returned, prompting Gizmodo's Brian Lam to try negotiating for a public acknowledgment that the phone was real. Apple was tipped off to the man who found/stole the prototype by his roommate.

Just a day before the Pre Plus launches on AT&T, current Palm owners are experiencing all kinds of problems related to the App Store and their Palm Profiles. Reports indicate the problems started last night, since then users haven't been able to download new apps or update existing ones from the catalog, while those unlucky enough to have tried a reset have had trouble signing back into their Palm profile in the cloud, and have lost some information like call logs and had to resync their various accounts in webOS. The Palm Developer Website is also down, tossing a "back in a few hours" sign in the window and going out for a few afternoon mimosas. For now, PreCentral posters recommend taking the device off of network time and resetting it to any day prior to today which will allow apps to install and update without issue. A post on the official Palm blog indicates things should be back to normal "soon" so AT&T customers can hopefully avoid any date/time trickery just to get their Foursquare checkins going.

Dave Knott notes that Google has announced it will close its online cell phone store and no longer sell the Nexus One smart phone directly to consumers. "While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not," wrote Andy Rubin, a Google VP of Engineering, on the official company blog. "It's remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it's clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from." From the Globe and Mail article:
"At least one aspect of Google's attempt to disrupt the world of mobile communications — selling phones directly to customers — has failed. ... [T]he decision to design and sell the Nexus One was perhaps more potentially disruptive for carriers. ... Google plans to continue marketing the Nexus One through 'existing retail channels, essentially partnering with carriers around the world. The Nexus One web store, meanwhile, will essentially become a marketing portal 'to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally.'"

Crash McBang sends in a CNN report on electronics and sleeplessness and asks, "So, what do Slashdotters do to get a good night's rest?"
"More than ever, consumer electronics — particularly laptops, smartphones and Apple's new iPad — are shining bright light into our eyes until just moments before we doze off. Now there's growing concern that these glowing gadgets may actually fool our brains into thinking it's daytime. Exposure can disturb sleep patterns and exacerbate insomnia, some sleep researchers said in interviews. ... Unlike paper books or e-book readers like the Amazon Kindle, which does not emit its own light, the iPad's screen shines light directly into the reader's eyes from a relatively close distance. That makes the iPad and laptops more likely to disrupt sleep patterns than, say, a television sitting across the bedroom or a lamp that illuminates a paper book, both of which shoot far less light straight into the eye, researchers said."

Earlier this month, General Motors hinted at a partnership with a major tech company to fully overhaul their telematics system, OnStar. While OnStar CEO Chris Preuss was tight-lipped about who that partner was, Motor Trend has recently reported that it's Google. If the rumor's true, GM will make the Chevy Volt the first Android-based vehicle to hit the road. The Motor Trend article suggests 'Google would sell its Android operating system for in-car use,' while the Wall Street Journal has a slightly different take: 'The pairing would likely involve a way for users of Android-based smartphones to use OnStar features from their phone while not in their car ... For instance, a person could find out information about their vehicle's maintenance needs through the Android phone. In the case of the Volt, GM's coming electric car, an owner may be able to keep track of the car's battery charge without being in the car.'"

App industry expert Alex Ahlund broke-down the iPhone app sales market to determine the ins and outs of succeeding in an increasingly competitive arena
Alex Ahlund, former CEO of AppVee and current adviser to Appolicious, has published a detailed breakdown of recent iPhone app sales on startup profiler site TechCrunch.
The survey utalises detailed financial information from 96 developers, with Ahlund looking at the success rates of market applications from major studios and single-person authors “ranging in price from 99 cents to $79.99.”
“This mining of data was intended to cover the entire iPhone app industry as a whole, without allowing outliers to skew the data too much in one direction,” Ahlund said.
On the general cost/sales results, Ahlund found that:
“The average total number of units sold [per App] was 101,024 within an average period of 261 days. The average number of units sold per day was 387.”
“The average price was $5.49, although the data skews due to the $49.99 outlier. In most cases, the price point was $0.99. The average number of updates released was 3.89, with the average total development cost amounting to $6,453,” he added.
Ahlund qualified these results by noting that “several developers omitted development costs and most did not include their personal time in these figures.”
“It is safe to assume the cost would be at least five or ten times more when using a contracted team,” he said.
“But on average here, iPhone developers are seeing a return of more than 15 times their initial, albeit small, development costs.”
Ahlund went on to note that when the top 10 per cent of the most successful apps were removed from the data, the numbers skewed much lower.
“In this scenario, the average sales were 11,625 total units, averaging 44 copies/day. Approximately 23% of apps sold less than 1000 units from launch,” he noted.
“56% of apps sold less than or equal to 10,000 units, while 90% sold less than 100,000 units, with the remaining 10% achieving sales of 127,000 – 3,000,000 units.”
Other interesting discoveries included finding out that application updates do far less to boost sales than previously thought.
“Some developers reported that updating the app gave only a small—and brief—spike in downloads,” Ahlund said.
“What did seem to have a larger impact on sales was a drop in price, although this also tended to taper off quickly.”
Having an app featured by Apple was discvered to be a much greater sales-boosting event for studios.
“The level of Apple promotion reflected what sort of increase the developer would see. Areas such as ‘New and Noteworthy’ produced slightly less gains than ‘Staff Favorites’ or ‘What’s Hot’,” Ahlund said.
“Generally, it is safe to assume a 2-20X sales spike following being featured, with the effect lasting roughly a week before returning to average numbers.”
Ahlund went on to breakdown the most ‘traditionally’ succesful marketing techniques, with an emphasis on social networking sites seeming the surest route for developers to take.

The average iPhone app has sold 101,024 copies over a lifetime of 261 days, according to new research published by former AppVee boss Alex Ahlund.
The company surveyed 96 iPhone developers, big and small, about their apps' sales performance.
The average app sells 387 copies a day, and the average price is $5.49. If that seems a bit high, be warned that Ahlund's research included one $49.99 app, which skewed the price.
The average app costs $6,453 to develop, and gets 3.89 updates.
However, Ahlund also warns that when you remove the top 10% of apps from his figures, you get an average sales figure of 11,625, with 23% of apps selling less than 1,000 downloads.
And the key to success? "Developers can either find a niche and get extremely lucky, or produce a fantastic product with high production values," writes Ahlund. "In the end, the latter is the safer route to success."

Demonstrating it's not just about Flash, Apple has officially rejected for the first time another alternative iPhone development environment following its controversial iPhone SDK Agreement changes. Even though RunRev proposed to retool its HyperCard-style development environment to directly expose all of the iPhone OS's APIs, Steve Jobs still rejected its proposal. The strength of RunRev's business case, with a large-scale iPad deployment project in education hinging on the availability of its tool, does not bode well for projects that have less commercial clout. Salient point: at last February's shareholders' meeting, Jobs went on the record saying that something like HyperCard on the iPad would be great, 'but someone would have to create it.

The Moject project proved that smartphones and pico projectors do indeed have a thing for one another, but Ethan Janson has taken things one step further with an unnamed contraption that holds his iPhone 3GS, a Microvision Show WX and an "ancient" point-and-shoot camera. Put simply, the handmade thingamajig allows him to play his iPhone games on a far larger screen, and since the Show WX is continually in focus regardless of distance from walls, there's never a blurring issue when flailing about in order to control the gameplay. The full skinny is down there in the source, but shortcut takers can head straight past the break for a video.

You know how we much love our old Apple IIe around here, and whether it's being used to create chiptunes or as an 8-bit Twitter station, we're always tickled when the venerable home computer makes an appearance. When an artist named Stewart Smith asked a Mac software developer called Panic to run some software on their in-house Apple IIe, he provided them with the source code as an audio file -- but he failed to supply them with a cassette player to load it from. The solution? Panic played the program off its iPad. As you can see from the video below, this isn't just any old program either -- it's a homebrew video for Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground) by Grandaddy. Thanks for amusing us, guys. And thanks for reminding us how much we enjoy The Sophtware Slump.

Rejoice, oh Android lovers. Thy OS of choice has finally graduated to the point where its latest variant is also the most used -- a statistic that is likely to last for only a day given Google's intent to reveal Android 2.2, or Froyo, at its I/O conference tomorrow. For the first time since El Goog's been keeping these platform version stats, 2.1 has risen above 1.5, the previous incumbent, having grown from 32.4 percent on May 3 (chart after the break) to 37.2 percent on May 17. This rapid ascension can only be expected to accelerate with more devices getting their Eclair permissions slips, and let's not forget that Google will be trying its hardest with 2.2 to make upgrades easier for phone makers to implement. Onwards and upwards we go.

The battle for minds is well and truly on now, and if there was any doubt that Google and Adobe are cozying up together to take on Apple, let it now be extinguished. TechCrunch is reporting that the latest version of Android -- you know, the one with the 450 percent performance improvement and buttery smooth Flash playback -- will, upon updating, guide you to visit a selection of Flash-enabled websites. Countering Apple's list of iPad-ready (aka Flash-free) websites, this is clearly intended as a showcase of the Adobe software's capabilities. Ironically, a sizable number of the sites on the list are "mobile optimized," meaning you won't be hitting their full desktop versions (which doesn't quite mesh with the idea of "the full web experience"), but it's still likely to cause some consternation over in Cupertino. All we're wondering now is how much Adobe had to pony up to ensnare such a prominent promo position, but things like that don't stay secret for long.

News via http://www.summeli.fi/?p=1674

the gpSP is a gameboy advance emulator originally written by Exophase. And now it’s ported to the Symbian OS!
The first gpSP4Symbian release is now ready for the testing. It already has some of the fixes that I’m taking with the AntSnes as well. This kind of sums up my Qt development strategy, since now I can use the same UI with all my emulators, so the porting process should be quicker. Also taking new updates to the UI should be a lot faster this way, since I can share UI updates between projects.
cool stuff:
30fps on N97!
cool UI with Qt
supports a lot of ROMs
know issues:
Audio is not yet implemented (I’m waiting for newer Qt release)
loading the state freezes the emulator in some games ( don’t worry, the batterysave still works)
Qt and SwEvent work together only on Nokia’s phones

Analyst firm Gartner has released its latest stats for handset and smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2010.
The most interesting part is its breakdown of the figures by operating system. Symbian remains the most popular, with 24.1 million smartphones having sold in Q1 with it.
Its market share of 44.3% is down from the 48.8% share it enjoyed in Q1 last year.
Also down in market share terms is the BlackBerry OS, which was in 10.6 million smartphones sold in Q1 this year. That's a big boost from the 7.5 million in Q1 last year, but the OS' market share has dipped from 20.6% to 19.4% in that time.
So who's on the up? Well, Apple's iPhone OS shipped in 8.4 million smartphones in Q1, taking a market share of 15.4% - up from 10.5% a year ago.
But the big winner is Google's Android OS, which has gone from a market share of 1.6% in Q1 2009 to 9.6% in Q1 this year - 5.2 million handsets.
Smartphones accounted for 17.3% of all mobile handset sales in Q1, according to Gartner.

Mobile devices company Apple has been described as ‘arrogant’ by a Sony executive.
SCE Australia managing director Michael Ephraim said Apple’s alleged hubris is the subject of numerous news reports, but the game boss denied that Sony itself ever deserved to be labelled as egotistical.
“I don't think we are arrogant anymore,” he said.
“I think we can name a company that is a fruit that is in he news a lot about their arrogance,” he added, in a translucent reference to Apple.
The iPhone company has in recent months struggled to generate positive PR out from its own successes and popular products.
To the furore of many Flash developers, Apple still refuses to allow the development platform to operate on the iPhone, citing compatibility issues and battery-drain worries.
Many commentators have described the decision as an act of flagrant egotism, citing Apple’s past business conflicts with Flash provider Adobe.
In an interview with the Brisbane Times, Ephraim said Apple has “taken the mantle from us” in regards to being seen as the most arrogant game company.
Apple has also faced accusations of arrogance after a string of interesting business decisions. The group recently announced it was going to establish its own iPhone Game Centre – a service that could theoretically make third-party offerings, such as OpenFeint, redundant.
The iPad firm is also competing directing with Amazon’s successful eReader business by establishing its own iBooks store.
Sony itself has learnt first-hand how dangerous it is for a company’s public relations to be described as arrogant.
The platform holder once said the PSP was “the Walkman for the 21st century”, before claiming that the next generation doesn’t start “until we say it does”. Slow, and borderline-disastrous, initial sales of the PS3 came with accusations that Sony had not modernised its PlayStation empire with humble, consumer-facing intentions.
Ephraim initially seemed to admit Sony had appeared as arrogant, though he proceeded to backtrack from his initial comment.
He said he didn’t think Sony had ever led its business in a cavalier fashion.

European age ratings organisation PEGI has released its app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch in the UK.
The application allows users to browse a database of over 14,000 games to research content, age ratings and suitability of all videogames that have been rated by the Pan-European Game Information association.
"We hope that this free app can give the PEGI system a boost in awareness among consumers, especially parents," said Simon Little, managing director of PEGI.
"It offers quick and direct access to everything you need to know about PEGI and videogame ratings, so there’s no excuse not to download it."
The UK's Entertainment and Leisure Software Publisher Association said it supports the release, and has encouraged parents to download the app in a bid to increase education on age-ratings.
"We fully support the PEGI classification system for the videogames industry and are delighted that this app has launched in the UK," offered Michael Rawlinson, director general of ELSPA.
The move comes after the ESRB in the US released a similar app for the North American region last year.

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has revealed plans to add an optional subscription model to its MMO, with players paying $2.99 a month to remotely browse, buy and sell in-game items.
The World Of Warcraft Remote service will be available via any web browser, and as an update to Blizzard's existing World of Warcraft Armory app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Remotely browsing the in-game auction house will be free, but bids and sales for items will require paid access to World of Warcraft Remote. Subscriptions are not yet available, but are currently being beta trialled on a free basis for active US WoW subscribers.
Blizzard has not revealed a final date for the launch of the new paid service.
While this new payment model is likely to prove controversial, Blizzard has previously established that its customers have a significant appetite for paid add-ons.
Within three hours of the launch of April's Celestial Steed promotion, over 140,000 players were queuing to pay $25 for an in-game flying horse, generating over $3.5m of revenue on the item's first day of release.
World of Warcraft's current subscriber numbers are unknown - at one point the MMO temporarily lost an estimated six million Chinese customers due to a protracted move to a new server host - but at its peak it boasted 11.5m paying players.
Parent company Activision Blizzard confirmed this month that WoW's ongoing success helped drive its better-than-expected financial results for the first quarter of 2010.
With Apple confirming over 30 million iPhone OS devices sold between June 2007 and March 2010, there is likely to be a significant crossover audience. Potentially more lucrative, however, is simple browser access to the World of Warcraft Remote service, allowing players to manage their in-game inventories from any web-enabled PC.
While take-up of the new paid service remains to be seen, it is possible the bold pricing scheme may be further justified by the inclusion of future remote access features, such as social networking for in-game Guilds.

Some are smitten by the iPad, some wonder just what the heck they'd do with the thing. We finally have an answer for members of the latter group: iPad blimp. The lighter-than-air portion of this equation features an Arduino controller board and some helium, while the decidedly heavier-than-air iPad runs an app to receive a video signal from the blimp and to send it controls via accelerometer. It was created by Breakfast NY and made its debut at an after party following the Munny Exhibit, part of Design Week, where it seemed to be quite a hit amongst the gathered group of drunken humanity, who you can see frolicking with the shiny airship after the break.

Guess who has another Apple scoop? Tinhte, the upstarts from Vietnam have first pics of the mythical iPod touch with a camera. The "DVT-1" stamp on the back makes it clear that this is an early design verification test unit in the evolution of product testing. In other words, this might not be the final design whenever Apple chooses to announce it, say, on June 7th. A check of the device's serial number identifies a late 2009 third generation iPod touch -- could be that this device was one of those eBay prototypes that never made it to production for whatever reason.
The Foxconn manufactured device is also running the same base diagnostic utility that we've seen before (who could forget that "serial number" icon). The Foxconn label appears to indicate a 64GB model ("64G" using a pair of Samsung 32GB Flash modules presumably) in addition to a 2 megapixel, backside illuminated sensor manufactured by Omnivision (part OV2665-6s).

As our extensive KIRF library shows, China's one wild country that can make almost anything you don't want, so don't mind us while we inspect this new finding with extra caution. This particular Chinese online seller not only claims to have parts for the next-gen iPhone, but also one white face plate -- something not seen on iPhones thus far. While we drool over the thought of an all white Apple handheld, there are still questions to be answered here: the seller wasn't able to explain what that silver bit above the speaker is, nor have we seen white back plates to match this. Furthermore, we were given a "maybe" for a bulk order of 15 to 20 units, which is quite a lot for something that's not even out yet, but we were told over the phone that there's always a back door to Foxconn as long as you wave cash at someone. Not that you should engage in such risky business, plus the truth will be revealed in about three weeks' time, anyway. One more shot after the break.

We've yet to see concrete proof that Apple's portable media players will ship with a camera, but the new iPhone OS 4.0 beta shows Cupertino's at least considering the notion for the iPod touch and even the iPad. It seems AT&T tethering wasn't the only thing hidden in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 -- 9to5Mac found a variety of telltale references to an a flash when pouring through the update's source code. Does that mean that the iDevices will actually get cameras, let alone supporting light fixtures? It's too early to tell... but we did spot an LED flash on that early iPhone HD, and a recent Vietnamese leak proves that Apple at least prototyped an iPod touch with a camera -- though no flash, sadly -- as well. Is Apple simply updating their error messages, or is there something to this? You make the call.

So look -- you've got a plethora of options on the iPhone to keep you connected to the Twitterverse, but if you're looking for something a touch more official, the wait is nearly over. A few short weeks after Twitter acquired Atebits, the creators of the Tweetie app, the company issued the first official Twitter app for Android; tonight, it looks as if a revamped version of Tweetie (3.0, obviously) will claim that same crown over on iPhone OS. It's tough to say exactly what changes are coming, but a few sporadic tips are coming in from far-flung corners of the globe saying that it's already available. If we were the betting type, we'd say it'll finally pop up in the US app store right around midnight. Pins and needles, we know.

Gameloft hasn't made much movement in the Android market since it promised to support the mobile platform last November. However, earlier today, the company launched 10 of its 3D games (all of which are currently available on iPhone) on a handful of Android-based handsets. PocketGamer reports that if you're rocking a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, HTC Desire, Motorola Milestone, Motorola Motoroi or a Google Nexus One, you can now purchase one of the following titles:
Asphalt 5
Let's Golf!
Assassin's Creed
Hero of Sparta
Gangstar: West Coast Hustle
Dungeon Hunter
Real Football 2010
N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance
Modern Combat: Sandstorm

The E3 edition of MCV will launch as a special iPad app next month, kick-starting a brand new digital edition strategy for the leading games industry publication.
Available from June 11th, the interactive version of MCV arrives just days after the UK roll out of the Apple device.
Leading video game accessories brand Logic 3 is sponsoring the iPad edition of MCV throughout June.
Apple launched the iPad in the US at the start of April – the tablet has since sold over 1m units in the territory.
The UK version arrives on May 28th, and rolls out in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland at the same time. Since launch iPad has sold over 12 million apps through its App Store, as well as over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore as users start to consume the printed word in different ways.
MCV’s iPad app will be a digital version of the weekly magazine. Along with our authoritative news, features and product coverage, it will contain video segments and various ways to read the magazine.
“Launching on iPad is part of our on-going commitment to making MCV content available on all devices,” said Intent Media MD Stuart Dinsey.
“This digital edition will bring to life our print edition, with rich media options and even wider UK and international circulation.
“Our established PC digital edition will also be relaunched at the same time.”

Giving devs access to freshly-announced versions of mobile operating systems on the very same day that they're announced is pretty much the way things work nowadays -- the first version of Windows Phone 7 understandably excepted -- so we're pleased to see that Google's kit for Android 2.2 Froyo is now up and running. You start out by downloading a modest 18-odd megabyte package that just contains tools with no target platforms, then you open a separate app to pull and install only the platforms you want (you can go all the way back to version 1.5, if you're so inclined). So kick off that download now while you grab lunch -- we hear the lobster bisque they're serving in the cafeteria today is pretty good.

Sure sure, Froyo is great and all, but Google just blew our minds with two previews of upcoming Android features at I/O: OTA application installation and remote music streaming. OTA installation is just as simple as you'd expect -- after browsing to an app on your desktop, you can push it to your phone and install it with just a single click, all done over the air. Interestingly, Google also showed music being purchased and transferred from Android Marketplace in the same way, which could indicate a deeper push towards music integration, or just be a nice demo. Either way, it's pretty slick stuff -- the fewer wires we have to carry, the better.
The remote music streaming is a little crazier: Google bought a company called Simplify Media, which makes a bit of desktop software that can stream all your music directly from iTunes to your phone. The demo was quite slick -- you just open the app and push "all," and all your music is instantly available. Whether or not this'll work over 3G or be limited to the local network is still up in the air, but we're dying to try it out.

Much to our surprise at the time, when Adobe sent us a Flash 10.1-enabled Nexus One for testing, the phone came preloaded with a preview build of Android 2.2 -- a.k.a. "Froyo" -- the apparent turning point for curbing Android fragmentation due for a very public unveiling today at Google I/O. We've had a day or two to dig into it, and while we're surely missing some improvements here or there (Google was unable to provide us a changelog as of this writing), we've spent pretty much all our waking moments combing through every virtual nook and cranny. So what can Eclair alumni expect from the revised platform? Read on for more!

After a few days of bad publicity, Apple has reversed its no cash purchase policy, explaining that the policy was originally implemented to limit the number of iPads an individual could buy during the introductory period of short supply. Now that supply has caught up with demand — and the story has hit front pages and gained national attention — Apple has reversed its policy, and taken the opportunity to put a bow on the story by giving the formerly scorned Diane Campbell a free iPad.

You heard it here first, folks. Google has just come out with the strident claim that the web browser in Android 2.2, aka Froyo, is the world's fastest for mobile devices. Having implemented the V8 JavaScript Engine that's already made an appearance in its desktop Chrome browser, Google's reporting JavaScript performance that's somewhere in the vicinity of two to three times better than what you can get from previous Android versions. We'll give this geek cabal some style points for the double equals sign up top, but will certainly be putting its bold assertion to the test in the very near future.

No huge surprises here, but Google just announced Android 2.2 "Froyo" at I/O, and the big addition is a just-in-time compiler, which brings a 2-5x speed boost to the system. There are also 20 new enterprise features, including better Exchange integration and device administration APIs, as well as a new device backup app that'll let you transfer personal data to a new device. Android 2.2 also features a new cloud-to-device messaging API that Google called "much more than a push notification service designed to make up for a lack of basic features like multitasking," and of course, WiFi tethering -- which was used to get a WiFi iPad online during the demo to great cheers. Google also demoed a new JavaScript engine in the Android browser, which is billed as "the world's fastest web browser," and a Chrome browser plugin that allows you to send directions from Maps on your desktop directly to your phone.

Google’s vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra has slammed Apple’s business model at this year’s Google I/O conference.
In a keynote address, Gundotra recounted a conversation between himself and Android creator Andy Rubin, whereby Rubin warned that “if Google did not act, we faced a draconian future, a future where one man, one company, one carrier would be our only choice.”
Accompanying his words was a 1984-style image that was a clear reference to Apple’s famous ‘1984’ advert, which features a pneumatic blond athlete destroying Big Brother.

Xinhua said 21-year-old Nan Gang leapt from a four-storey factory in the early hours, soon after finishing work.
Shortly after, it emerged that the death of a worker at a Foxconn plant in Hebei province earlier this year was also a suicide.
A total of 11 Foxconn employees have tried to kill themselves this year - two have survived.
The incidents have raised concerns about worker treatment at the site.
The Associated Press quoted spokesman Arthur Huang as saying the company carried out social responsibility programmes to ensure workers' welfare.
Earlier this week, Foxconn said it was enlisting counsellors and Buddhist monks to provide emotional support for its workers.
Suicides
Ten of the employees worked at Foxconn's campuses in Shenzhen, but on Friday it was revealed that a man who died at a factory in the northern Hebei province had also jumped from a building.
The worker, identified by Xinhua as 19-year old Rong Bo, died in the city of Langtang early this year.
A similar investigation into the death of 16-year old Wang Lingyan - who was found dead in a dormitory at the same site - concluded she died from cardiac arrest, government spokeswoman Wang Qiunu told Xinhua.
Foxconn worker Sun Danyong killed himself last year
Foxconn is part of Hon Hai Precision, the world's largest maker of consumer electronics, and employs 800,000 workers worldwide, mostly in China.
The company has said it is taking the deaths seriously, even though a local government investigation did not blame working conditions.
The spate of deaths comes after a Foxconn employee in charge of shipping Apple's iPhone prototype units killed himself last year after one of the units went missing.
Apple said it had investigated accusations of bad employment practices by Foxconn stemming from a June 2006 complaint, and found the claims to be largely unfounded.
Monk support
However, it concluded that some employees were working more than Foxconn's mandated maximum during peak production times, and as many as a quarter of them were not taking at least one day off a week.
US-based China Labour Watch has criticised Foxconn's "military-style administration and harsh working conditions" and called on the company to "initiate a thoroughgoing analysis of life on its production lines".
Foxconn says it has hired 100 counsellors and invited monks to help workers at a new Employee Care Centre and trained its medical staff to provide emotional support.
It has also introduced a reward system for employees who spot colleagues with emotional problems, and a hotline for workers.

Why, thanks Google! Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company's official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that's Froyo for the inexperienced) will be "made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks," and it'll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the "next few weeks." That's music to our ears, and if you're unsure what kind of impact this will have on your own life, feel free to take a deep dive into this right here.

For a company with as rich of a reputation for landscape QWERTY sliders as HTC has, you'd think they'd be tripping over themselves to release a truly high-end Android phone with a keyboard, but not so much -- the closest they've come so far would be the midrange myTouch 3G Slide, and that puppy ain't even out yet. We broke the news last night about three seemingly new names for upcoming HTC devices -- Vision, LED, and Glacier -- and Dutch site Tweakers.net is now reporting on a user agent profile for the Vision that lists the device featuring that mythical holy trinity: WVGA display, QWERTY, and Android. Furthermore, they've got the director of HTC Benelux on record saying that they're planning more Android phones with keyboards -- so that's a Good Thing to hear at a time when huge slates seem to be stealing the show in every segment of the market. With the Nexus One, Desire, Droid Incredible, and EVO 4G all alive and well, we think these guys would be well-served to play with other form factors for a minute or two, yeah?

Had enough Android excitement yet? Of course not. Following up on the Froyo release yesterday, we've got the no less vital news that the iPhone 3G port of Android is now ready to download and install. Having shown off Google's OS running on a 3G two weeks ago, author David Wang has clearly had to iron out a few kinks before serving up the necessary binaries, but here they are now, replete with a handy install guide he's penned over at PC World. Time to get yourself on the dual-booting bandwagon, no?

SEGA has decided to "extend the development of" Sonic the Hedghehog 4: Episode 1. The download game will now be released in "late 2010" instead of this summer.
The publisher also announced that the retro 2D revival will be coming to iPhone and iPod Touch as well as XBLA, PSN and WiiWare.
"The additional time will allow the Development Team to focus on ensuring overall high quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands, and ultimately providing fans with an unrivalled classic Sonic feel," says the press release, which you can find at the SEGA Europe blog.

So there's no question that Apple is selling a ton of iPads, but would you have guessed that it's actually selling more iPads than all Mac sales combined? That's the case, at least at the moment, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who says that Apple is currently moving about 200,000 iPads per week, compared to 110,000 Macs -- though it still trails the iPhone, which is apparently racking up sales of 246,000 per week. Of course, we are just talking about analyst estimates here, and things could potentially swing back into the Mac's favor once the quarterly totals are added up. If true, however, it'd sure be a whopper of a milestone -- one that we'd no doubt be hearing plenty more about in, say, three weeks time.

With iPad going on sale internationally next week, it seems the device is increasingly hard to come by in the US.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has issued a research note outlining his findings when he called 50 Apple Stores to see which iPads they had in stock.
74% had none available, and 26% had some Wi-Fi models, but no stores had the 3G iPad in stock for immediate purchase.
While customers are able to reserve iPads and collect then 4-7 days later, or order them online, Munster suggests that it proves Apple's claims of demand outstripping supply in the US.
His latest prediction is that Apple will sell 1.3 million iPads in the current financial quarter, less than the 2.5 million suggested by other analysts.

Facebook is launching a new SDK for Android developers that will include the social network's new Open Graph system to tap into people's social connections.
Well-connected blog All Facebook has the scoop, which seems to have been overlooked amid the other announcements at Google's I/O conference this week.
Facebook is apparently recruiting hotshot Android developers to incorporate its APIs into their games. The Open Graph element is significant, since that hasn't yet been rolled out for iPhone - the first smartphone OS to get Facebook Connect.
Android developers will also be able to deep-link into the Facebook Android app: for example, letting people click to access the profiles of people they're playing against in a game.
iPhone will surely get this too, of course. And while Android seems to have stolen a march, there have been rumours that one of Apple's announcements at its WWDC conference early next month will be Facebook-related.
Specifically, the company has been tipped to bake Facebook into the iPhone OS itself, presumably now including Open Graph - which hadn't been announced when Apple first unveiled its next-gen iPhone OS 4 software.
In any case, Facebook clearly wants Open Graph to be on as many devices as possible, which is why Android, with its growing momentum and plethora of handsets, is a logical choice.

Heads up! We've gotten a ton of tips from our friends across the pond and down under that Apple's now sending shipment notifications for those who pre-ordered the iPad -- both the 3G and WiFi-only models, from what we've seen -- about one week before that famed May 28 international launch date. Now, before you start thinking you need to take off work a few days earlier, don't forget that those in the US also got notifications a week before release and still no one got an early present. In other words, just be happy knowing all systems are go and your productivity is still likely to be shot on Wednesday.

Next week, you'll have another platform on which to experience Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney's verbal dueling. Capcom has announced that the iPhone version of the first Phoenix Wright game, originally revealed in December, will be released on the App Store at a price of just $4.99. It's even got the fifth case, which was only available in the WiiWare port as DLC. If you've never played Phoenix Wright, passing it up at such a bargain price is a crime, punishable by our disappointment.
This is the rare iPhone port that won't be ruined by the platform's lack of buttons -- gameplay consists entirely of clicking through menus and occasionally pointing a cursor at an area of the screen. Capcom has even streamlined these controls further for iPhone, with a "flick interface" that allows players to swipe through inventory menus. There's something satisfying about the idea of playing Phoenix Wright with your outstretched index finger.

Clearly a white front plate was not enough to satisfy curiosity. Though we aren't able to verify this ourselves, Chinese site Apple.pro has a couple shots of what it claims to be the white next-gen iPhone, almost fully assembled (the front plate looks like it hasn't been snapped in all the way) and casually lounging next to the black model we've gazed upon so many times at this point. Is this enough for us to trust and comfortably change our palette preferences? Nah, but surely 15 days until expected confirmation can't be too excruciating of a wait.

iPad has subtle yet important differences from iPhone and iPod touch for games developers, says Travis Boatman, VP of worldwide studios at EA Mobile. "It’s a destination device," he tells our sister site Mobile Entertainment.
"It's more deliberate, and people expect more of a deliberate, immersive experience... People really do decide to sit down with it on their laps and play for longer periods of time. That affects the kind of games we build."
EA has so far released five iPad games, including new versions of Mirror's Edge, Command & Conquer and Need for Speed Shift.
Boatman also praises the "beautiful blank canvas" of Apple's iPhone, saying that iPad benefits from similar freedom for developers to explore new interfaces for games.
"Creative teams can paint any kind of interface for their game, rather than be forced to use a D-pad or rollerball," he says.
"It puts control back into the hands of creative people."

We're in an interesting position with Windows Phone 7. We still don't know what devices will be running the OS nor indeed exactly when they'll be launching, but despite that we've already had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of quality time with not one but two separate versions of Microsoft's mobile revolution. And now, if that weren't enough, we've gained access to a series of detailed architectural documents about the OS courtesy of tweakers.net and HTCPedia.com, documents that detail everything from ringtones to device drivers. It's a couple-hundred pages of generally menial stuff, but there are quite a few nuggets of gold to be found in here, and we've dug them out just for you. Click on through, and let's see what we've got.

Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1. A perfect combination for combination for a little Hulu on the go, right? Not quite, as Hulu has decided to block videos (for legal reasons) when it detects a mobile device, but it turns out there is a surprisingly simple workaround. As Absolutely Android explains, all you have to do is make Hulu think you're using a desktop browser, which can be done simply by entering "about:debug" in the address bar and switching the UAString setting from Android to desktop. The only downside to the trick is that you'll now also get the full desktop version of the Hulu site (and any other site, until you switch it back), and there's a better than decent chance that Hulu will close this loophole before you can finish your first episode of Kojak.

PocketNow posted a video comparing iPhone 3GS with iPhone OS 4, Nexus One with Android 2.2 and HTC HD2. The video is comparing browser speeds in various situations. The results show a clear issue when Adobe Flash plugin is enabled on the Nexus One phone. Not only the speed of loading pages in slow but also scrolling on pages is not smooth. Also, it looks like Adobe Flash plugin takes way too many resources causing the device to display Memory Low warnings. On pages without Flash, or when the Adobe Flash plugin is not enabled, Nexus One with Android 2.2 is definitely faster from the other browsers. Safari on the iPhone will get a boost with the introduction of the next generation iPhone in a few days. Next generation iPhone is expected to include the same A4 processor found in iPad. The battle between Apple and Adobe is well documented with Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs calling Adobe “lazy” in working to fix performance of Flash in mobile devices. In addition, in his public letter explaining why Apple is restricting Adobe Flash in iPhone OS 4, Jobs said that Adobe Flash performs poorly. “We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it,” Jobs said.

Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division could be in line for "major organisational changes" as soon as this week, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
The division includes Microsoft's Windows Phone operation, along with Zune and Xbox. The WSJ suggests that executives could be on the way out, including chief experience officer and CTO J Allard.
The report points to "increasingly bruising competition" from Apple and Google as a prime factor in the reorganisation.
However, it wouldn't be a surprise if Microsoft wanted to make changes, as it tries to forge closer links between the different bits of this particular division.
Zune will supply the music and entertainment aspects for Windows Phone 7, while Xbox will provide the gaming platform.

South Korea-based studio Lemon has signed a publishing deal that will see its smartphone MMO released across multiple platforms. Lemon says its game, Fantasia, cost $4.5 million to build; relatively sizable funds required to bring MMO PvP gameplay to mobile devices.
Com2uS has stepped in as publisher for the game, in a deal worth 3 Billion Won.
Lemon says that the volatile growth of smartphone market – and the devices’ adoption of WiFi – means that the platform will expand from its roots in single-player game design, eventually adopting the kind of online-focused gaming commonly found in home consoles.
“It took 4 years and US$ 4.5 million to develop Fantasia,” said Lemon CEO Hyo-Sung Yoon.
“I am positive that Fantasia will become a killer game content for smartphone with its profound storyline and quality gameplay.”
A closed Beta for Famtasia will launch later in the year.

Unfortunately, we don't know much about this new Marvell powered tablet, but we couldn't resist sharing our impressions of the very svelte 10-inch device. We only got a few minutes to play around with the slate at the Netbook Summit, but we can tell you that it has a brushed metal back and there's an opening on the front for a camera. As for the internals, it's based on Marvell's Moby reference design, which uses its Snapdragon-class Armada 610 processor, and will run Android 2.1 Eclair. The rest will be up to whatever Marvell customer is bringing this bad boy to market -- the Marvell executive that let us catch a glance at the device wouldn't turn it on as he feared we may see the mystery customer's logo. We told you we didn't know much, but from what we saw today it sure looks promising. Now, if only we felt Android was ready for these tablets...

Yes, the "iPhone 3G is dead" rumors are flying fast, and our latest entry is hardly a rumor: Apple's online store currently lists the solitary 8GB iPhone 3G next to the full iPhone 3GS crop, but there's no longer a tasty "select" button below it. Usually if something's out of stock on the Apple store it will just say so, along with a projected time of delay, but with the 4G presumably around the corner this could indeed be marking the end of the 3G's last stand.

Apple may be a despot of its own walled garden, but that doesn't mean it's not benevolent. The iPad's international launch on May 28 has prompted the company to open Stores an hour early, at 8AM local time, in order to give its devotees a reprieve from hours of queuing outside. Then again, that little asterix up there points us to an ominous "while supplies last" note at the bottom, which together with current pre-orders being fulfilled at some unidentified point in June, might force the most impatient to just get to the Store even earlier. UK buyers will get an alternative option thanks to Dixons Group stocking Apple's slate in Currys and PC World outlets, an arrangement that we keep hearing might be exclusive for the first sixty days after launch. Either way, you've been warned, don't be tardy if you wanna be trendy.
P.S. The iBooks app has also made its debut outside of the US today, though at present it's limited to just freebie titles, and the iBookstore is still described as "US only."
Update: The latest we're hearing is that at least some Apple Premium Resellers will also be getting stock of the iPad in the UK -- worth checking out if other options sell out.

Revolution Software adventure game Broken Sword: The Directors Cut has today been released for the iPad. The same version as released on the DS, Wii and iPhone, and features extra puzzles and artwork not included in the 1996 PC original.
The iPad addition also includes its own unique content; primarily in the form of a digital Broken Sword comic by Watchmen artist and co-creator Dave Gibbons, which has never before seen release in virtual form. The iPad edition also boasts higher resolution visuals than its iPhone predecessor.
"This really is the definitive version," said Revolution Software's managing director, Charles Cecil. "Rather than rush the game out for the US launch, we have taken the time to get it just right, and with the higher resolution graphics, and the addition of the digital comic as a bonus feature, there's a lot of new content to enjoy. We are thrilled to be able to release the game to coincide with the European launch of the iPad."
Revolution Software's globe hopping murder mystery is available now for Ł4.99 for the iPad.

A survey conducted by East Carolina University Psychophysiology Department is finding that playing PopCap's games, such as Bejeweled and Peggle, improves cognitive function. PopCap has highlighted the fact the the study, which has been underway some six-months, is in no way underwritten by the giant of casual gaming.
The Psychophysiology Lab and Biofeedback Clinic at ECU's director Dr. Carmen Russoniello is presenting initial data and analysis from the study today at the 6th annual Games for Health Conference in Boston.
“The initial results of the study are very intriguing, in that they suggest that the 'active participation' required while playing a casual video game like Bejeweled provides an opportunity for mental exercise that more passive activities, like watching television, do not,” said Russoniello. “Future applications could include prescriptive applications using casual video games to potentially stave off Alzheimer's disease and other dementia-type disorders.”

Square Enix quietly released Chocobo Panic on iTunes. No, it’s not chocobo RPG. It’s a chocobo catching game for iPad.
Chocobo Panic has players touch colored chocobos to hold them until the game tells you to “let go!”. The game takes advantage of the iPad’s multi-touch screen since players can use up to six fingers to catch chocobos. Sounds something like finger Twister with moving dots. Chocobo Panic also has a two player mode and keeps track of your high score.
Chocobo Panic is Square Enix’s second iPhone game. Their first? Morita Shogi HD. You can Chocobo Panic plus a stable of blue, red, yellow, and forest loving black chocobos for $3.99.

Apple's iBooks application for iPad is now available internationally - or at least on the UK App Store, from where we've just downloaded it.
The app lets iPad users browse Apple's catalogue of e-books, download them and then read them on the tablet device.
You'll notice we didn't say 'purchase' there. That's because for now, the iBooks store doesn't have any paid titles here in the UK.
Instead, it's offering a range of classic books, including fiction and non-fiction, as free downloads.
Apple is either still tying up licensing deals with the various book publishers for the UK, or it's still grappling with the implications of whether its agency model deals with publishers are even legal here.
Happily, as in the US, the app comes with one free download: a Winnie the Pooh e-book. Currently riding high in the UK iBooks free books chart are The Three Musketeers, The Art of War, Great Expectations and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
It's possible, of course, that a wodge of paid e-books will be added to the store tonight, in readiness for iPad's official UK launch tomorrow.

UK broadcaster Sky has updated its iPhone mobile TV app to run on the iPad too, offering several channels for streaming over Wi-Fi.
The iPad version offers better quality streams of Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports News and Sky News, although users are advised to be using a Wi-Fi connection with at least 2Mb per second.
How much to watch Sky on your iPad? Ł35 a month for people who aren't already Sky subscribers, and Ł6 a month for people who are. There will be free trials.
The app is being released for UK and Irish residents only, and is live on the App Store now.
It's already attracted several one-star reviews on the App Store, with users complaining about the Ł35 monthly price point.
"Ł35 for iPad viewing each month? Someone is having a laugh here, but it's not me," is one comment. The main issue appears to be the fact that iPhone and iPod touch users pay just Ł6 a month.
Last night, Sky's general manager of mobile David Gibbs was distinctly lukewarm on iPad's importance, speaking at ME's Monetising Mobile conference.
"For a media or entertainment company it's very interesting. But at the moment it's an interesting niche," he said.

iPhone maker Apple has surpassed Microsoft to become the world's most valuable technology company, according to the latest Wall Street evaluations.
On Wednesday Apple was valued at $222.12 billion and Microsoft at $219.18 billion, with the only American company valued higher being Exxon Mobil at $278.64 billion.
Revenues for Apple stand at $42.9 billion, with Microsoft at $58.4 billion. There is a wider divide in net income though, with Microsoft making a profit of $14.6 billion in its last fiscal year - compared to $5.7 billion for Apple.
The upset not only marks an individual triumph for Apple but also sees the dominant technology company change from one focused on business users to the consumer market.
As noted by the New York Times 172 million smartphones were sold last year, as opposed to 306 million PCs. However, smartphone sales are growing at more than five times the pace.
Of the two companies Microsoft remains by far the most invested in the video games industry, with both the Xbox brand and continued support for Games for Windows.
Apple has traditionally been far less engaged, although the release of Steam for Macintosh computers and the launch of the App Store for the iPhone and iPad has allowed third parties to make Apple hardware increasingly viable games formats.

The Free Software Foundation has discovered that an application currently distributed in Apple's App Store is a port of GNU Go. This makes it a GPL violation, because Apple controls distribution of all such programs through the iTunes Store Terms of Service, which is incompatible with section 6 of the GPLv2. It's an unusual enforcement action, though, because they don't want Apple to just make the app disappear, they want Apple to grant its users the full freedoms offered by the GPL. Accordingly, they haven't sued or sent any legal threats and are instead in talks with Apple about how they can offer their users the GPLed software legally, which is difficult because it's not possible to grant users all the freedoms they're entitled to and still comply with Apple's restrictive licensing terms.

The Washington Post reports that Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) have introduced legislation that would require buyers to present identification when purchasing a prepaid cellphone and require phone companies to keep the information on file, as they do with users of landline phones and subscription-based cellphones. 'This proposal is overdue because for years, terrorists, drug kingpins, and gang members have stayed one step ahead of the law by using prepaid phones that are hard to trace,' says Schumer. Civil liberties advocates have concerns about the proposal, saying there must be a role for anonymous communications in a free society, adding that the space for such anonymous or pseudonymous communications has been narrowed since pay phones, for example, have largely disappeared."

if you feel like going through the process of typing in your PIN every time you unlock your iPhone is worth it thanks to the unconquerable security it implies, you might want to read this report from Bernd Marienfeldt about the chosen one's security model. Yes, a PIN will keep casual users from picking up your phone and making a call with it, or firing off an e-mail to your co-workers saying that you're quitting and becoming an exotic dancer, but it won't keep someone from accessing all your data. Bernd and fellow security guru Jim Herbeck have discovered that plugging even a fully up-to-date, non-jailbroken iPhone 3GS into a computer running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx allows nearly full read access to the phone's storage -- even when it's locked. The belief is that they're just a buffer overflow away from full write access as well, which would surely open the door to making calls. Bernd believes the iPhone's lack of data encryption for content is a real problem, and also cites the inability to digitally sign e-mails as reasons why the iPhone is still not ready for prime time in the enterprise.

People, calm yourselves! Our inbox has been overflowing with excited Brits telling us their iPads are either en route or already delivered, a whole Earthly day ahead of the promised May 28 launch. We're sure the UK is not alone, as we've already witnessed an unboxing video from Italy claiming to be the first to take delivery in Europe, so consider this a friendly reminder if you're expecting to receive a magical device in the near future: objects in your Apple shopping basket may be closer than they appear.

Three years ago, a certain obiwan22222 wowed us when he played Wii on his PSP (with a little help from Sony's LocationFree technology). For his next trick, our man has done the same thing on an iPod touch. But wait, you ask -- is there a LocationFree client for iPhone / iPod touch? We don't think so, so we've pinged him for an explanation. He's being extremely tight-lipped about it all, saying only that 1) this is not fake, 2) he got rid of the five second lag, and 3) all will be revealed "soon enough" (that is, once we've been tortured enough). If anything, we can certainly respect a man with a flair for showmanship! In the meantime, check out the video after the break. We'll let you know as soon as we hear back from the dude.

Is it no longer enough for you to be sneaky in Splinter Cell: Conviction? Would you also like the ability to be sneaky about playing it? Gameloft has just released an iPhone version of the stealth action game, so you could be playing Splinter Cell all day, with the people around you thinking you're just texting a lot.
Conviction on iPhone attempts to bring essentially the same visual style and gameplay to the handheld platform, with a similar third-person perspective, cover, and even Sam's mark-and-execute abilities. According to TouchArcade's review, problems with controls and AI keep it from quite achieving that goal

There's only so much zombie slaughter one can engage in before dispatching the undead loses its luster, wouldn't you say? That's why Activision is looking to shake things up for its undead murder sim, Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies on iPhone.
IGN reports Shi No Numa will add the Zombie Swamp map to the game -- one of Call of Duty: World at War's maps. In Zombie Swamp, players will get access to new weapons (the Arisaka, Type 100 machine gun and the Wunderwaffe DG-2) and take on new enemies: Japanese soldiers and Hellhounds.
This is the second expansion released for Call of Duty: Zombies, joining the currently available Verruckt map pack. Current owners will be able to download Shi No Numa at the end of this week for $4.99 from the App Store. If you have yet to download the game at all, you can purchase Call of Duty: Zombies for the usual price of $9.99 with Shi No Numa already loaded.

The Guardian Eyewitness Photography App for iPad has been downloaded over 90,000 times from the App Store since the iPad’s US launch on April 3rd.
The app, which aggregates the best examples of photojourmalism from around the world, notched up 50,000 iPad downloads within its first 10 days of availability.
The Eyewitness images are printed in full colour in the centre spread of the Guardian newspaper each day to showcase some of the world’s best news photography.
The app is now available for free in all countries where the iPad is on sale.
Emily Bell, Director of Digital Content, Guardian News & Media (GNM), said: “To have our app on so many iPads in the US is a fantastic achievement, and has enabled us to reach new audiences. We are looking forward to even more people downloading it now that the device is available outside of the US.”

The Tetris Company, LLC has notified Google to remove all Tetris clones from Android Market. I am one of the developers of FallingBlocks, a game with the same gameplay concepts as Tetris. I have received an email warning that my game was suspended from Android Market due to a violation of the Developer Content Policy. When I received the email, I already imagined that it had something to do with it being a Tetris clone, but besides having the same gameplay as Tetris, which I believe cannot be copyrighted, the game uses its own name, graphics and sounds. There's no reference to 'Tetris' in our game. I have emailed Google asking what is the reason for the application removal. Google promptly answered that The Tetris Company, LLC notified them under the DMCA (PDF) to remove various Tetris clones from Android Market. My app was removed together with 35 other Tetris clones. I checked online at various sources, and all of them say that there's no copyright on gameplay. There could be some sort of patent. But even if they had one, it would last 20 years, so it would have been over in 2005. It's a shame that The Tetris Company, LLC uses its power to stop developers from creating good and free games for Android users. Without resources for a legal fight, our application and many others will cease to exist, even knowing that they are legit. Users will be forced to buy the paid, official version, which is worse than many of the ones available for free on the market. Users from other countries, such as Brazil in my case, won't even be able to play the official Tetris, since Google Checkout doesn't exist in Brazil; you can't buy paid applications from Android Market in these countries

The high entry price for Apple's iPad, coupled with the ability to produce richer, more creative software for the new handheld tablet, will help maintain a higher sales price for games in Apple's App Store.
That's according to EA Mobile's vice president of publishing Luca Pagano, who told GamesIndustry.biz that he hopes prices for iPad apps won't drop as dramatically as those on the iPhone did after launch.
"In a way the iPad will be less crowded on the marketplace compared to the iPhone," he said "The production values expected will be higher from consumers and I don't think there will be as much downward pressure on prices of apps for the iPad."
EA Mobile has released five titles for the iPad in the US, with two – Need for Speed Shift and Scrabble – in the top ten grossing apps since launch.
Need for Speed Shift sells for $14.99 in the US and goes live in the UK today for Ł7.49, while Scrabble sells for $9.99 and Ł5.99.
"It's very early days but I would expect an even more niche and premium audience," said Pagano of the iPad consumer. "Definitely people with a high disposable income, especially those that have the device in the beginning.
"I believe that with the right level of content, with the right level of quality and with the right brands people will always be prepared to pay a higher price."
Pagano added that although they both share similar technology, it's important to treat the iPad as a completely different device compared to the iPhone, and play to its strengths which in turn will help differentiate it from the other Apple handhelds.
"Because it's a unique device you need to develop games in a way that take advantage of its specific features and bare in mind certain aspects like its size and its weight," he said. "The accelerometer for example is very powerful for the device but it may not necessarily deliver the same kind of gaming experience that you have on the iPhone.
"It would be a shame not to develop games specifically for the iPad and games that are optimised for the iPad."

Though we're not even a wee bit shocked to see a "usable" version of Froyo already available to owners of the G1 / Dream and Magic, we're definitely heartened to see that phones running 2008 specs can handily run a mid-2010 version of the platform. There's plenty of stuff that doesn't work yet -- WiFi and GPS, just to name a couple of biggies -- but we suspect that this is one dev community that won't give up until everything is working to their satisfaction. Motivation to hang on to otherwise outdated hardware for a few more months, perhaps?

Wi-Fi Sync is quite the gem (at least we think so) but it had some limitations -- namely, it only worked on OS X for desktop, and only with iPhone / iPod touch. Developer Greg Hughes pinged us earlier today to let us know he's thrown the gates off such restrictions. The jailbroken app now works for both iPads and Windows -- XP, Vista, and 7. The desktop client is free to download but it still cost just a hair under $10 for the appropriate mobile device. Worth the price of breaking free from wires? Your call.

The overnight success that some developers enjoyed with apps on the iPhone isn't likely to be repeated on the iPad, according to Ed Lea, chief technical office for Grapple Mobile.
The iPad requires much more work than just an HD upgrade of an iPhone title, he told GamesIndustry.biz, and he also warned that like the iPhone app store, inferior copies of successful apps could soon flood the market and push prices down.
"It's going to be a lot harder for bedroom developers to write a few thousand lines of code and release an overnight success on iPad as we saw on iPhone in the early days. The development process for world class iPad apps is much longer and the focus on user-interface is even greater than iPhone," he said.
"Simply building bigger versions of iPhone apps isn't going to cut it. Typically [users are] going to be in the home, consuming content on iPads. They will expect the large format screen to be fully utilised. On iPhone Apple made it very easy to create simple apps that look and work great. With so much extra screen size developers must put a lot more effort into creating interfaces that continue to delight users in an intuitive way."
Lea has been responsible for a number of apps on the iPhone including BoomBot, MMS and TV Plus, and works with Grapple Mobile to build apps for multiple handsets.
As with the iPhone, Lea expects prices to drop as cheaper clones of successful apps arrive on the iPad, forcing down prices across the board.
"I suspect that as we saw with iPhone, the price of apps will fall over time," he said. "Copycat apps will start to appear, taking the functionality of successful apps and reproducing them, often at lower price-points to the detriment of the quality of the apps."
Although today's launch of the iPad has seen dedicated Apple consumers flock to buy the device, it will require a longer term marketing effort to convince consumers the iPad is more than just a luxury gadget.
"The real marketing challenge over the first couple of months might well be selling the device to 'normal people'. For a lot of people it's a cool device that solves a problem they don't necessarily have."
The iPad launches today in the UK, with prices ranging from Ł429 to Ł699.

Team17 has released an iPad version of Worms that costs three Queen's English pounds.
Dubbed Worms HD, the most obvious advancement is crisp, full-screen visuals. But the developer has also gotten to grips with the iPad's multi-touch capabilities.
"Worms is perfectly suited to a casual platform such as iPad, and it's quite possibly the best handheld Worms experience to date," said Team17's Martyn Brown.
"Features such as the ability to pass and play (with the screen flipping for the other player) hark back to the game's social roots. We look forward to delivering more titles for what has quickly become a popular gaming platform."
Worms HD has hotseat multiplayer for four people, a nifty auto-save for abruptly ended games, iTunes music support and loads of content.
English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch languages are supported.

Retailers have braced themselves for an iPad sales rush as the potentially lucrative device goes on sale in the UK for the first time today.
Video games have become a major selling point for Apple’s latest touch-screen unit – with hundreds of titles available to download from the App Store direct to the device.
The gadget is priced from Ł429 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model to Ł699 for the 64GB 3G version.
Confirmed UK iPad stockists include PC World, Amazon, Dixons, Currys, Play.com and Apple, with Argos planning to sell the device from September.
The likes of GAME, Gamestation and HMV have all told MCV that they are interested in stocking the new tablet computer. HMV will sell accessories for the device.
GAME previously ran a promotion on its website providing information about the iPad, but could not confirm or deny whether it would be stocking the device.
HMV’s technology products manager Ricky Gordon told MCV: “As the UK’s leading outlet for iPod accessories we’ll certainly be looking to stock this item if we possibly can.
“However, we’re mindful of the huge demand that will exist for the iPad among a broad range of competing retailers, and the challenge this will present to Apple.
“So whether we can secure some stock in its first wave of release or whether we have to wait a little while is hard to say, but I feel sure it will only be a matter of time before we do. It’s a product we’d love to make available to customers.”
A spokesperson for Argos said: “I can confirm Argos plans to sell the iPad from September 2010.
“Like other retailers in the same position, this is still subject to Apple so we aren’t in a position to be commenting on a product that we do not currently stock.”
Specialist games retailers Grainger Games and ShopTo.net have told MCV they will not be stocking the gadget.

You've seen it in San Jose, you've seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you're seeing the iPhone 4G display waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven't been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone part in their paws, but hey, that's what they claim. The guys from superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker's call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the iPhone 3GS -- making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair -- while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You'll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at WWDC in a few days' time.

You know how you love to play Boggle but hate having to buy note pads all of the time? Well, if you've got yourself an iPad, you may be interested to know that EA has released Boggle onto the App store. Simply boot up the game, give your iPad a shake and you're good to go on a word hunt.
The game features three different modes of play: Challenge, Advanced and Self-Score. There's even iTunes support, allowing you to control the soundtrack of misery for your family while you display your wordsmith skills during the annual Thanksgiving Boggle Tournament. We suggest something really classy, like Sagat's "Funk Dat."

How desperate are you to get Netflix running on your iPhone? Desperate enough to jailbreak, grab frameworks from your iPad, and do some plist hacking? If the answer to those questions is "yes," then the folks at ModMyi have something they'd like to show you. According to the site, a tipster has been able to get the video streaming service up and playing on an iPhone by making what appears to be fairly simple changes to his device; namely, boosting the iPad's MediaPlayer.framework and altering plist settings once the app was installed on his phone. It's not all wine and roses, as using Netflix where it's not supposed to be used causes a massive battery drain (go figure), and there are issues with crashing and 3G playback (two more unsurprising problems). Still, it can be done, and this is just the start -- so if you want to get in on the party (and maybe even help out a little bit), hit the read link and see what it's all about.

Plenty of other VoIP apps have managed to work in this functionality since Apple / AT&T started allowing it last year, but the official Skype app has been a notable holdout. Now, two months after Skype started doing 3G calls on Android with Verizon, there's a 2.0 version of the app for iPhone that brings voice calls over 3G at last. Mobile iPhone calls are free until August, after which you'll need a "mobile subscription." We're testing out the app as we write this and it seems to work about as well any other 3G VoIP app we've tried: passable, not revolutionary.

Sticky,' in the social sciences and particularly economics, describes a situation in which a variable is resistant to change. For websites or products it usually means that visitors or customers keep coming back for more. Now Fortune Magazine reports on an analysis by Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore on what makes the (iTunes-based) iPhone-iPod-iPad platform so sticky and why it's going to get harder, not easier, for Apple users to switch, no matter what Google and the rest of Apple's competitors have up their sleeves. Whitmore says the investment Apple's customers have made in content for those devices in terms of apps, videos, and music purchased at the iTunes Store creates Apple's 'stickiness.' Apple has an installed base today of about 150 million iTunes-dependent devices that could grow to more than 200 million by the end of 2011. Whitmore comes up with a cumulative investment in those devices of about $15 billion today, growing to $25 billion by the end of next year. 'This averages to ~$100 of content for each installed device,' Whitmore writes, 'suggesting switching costs are relatively high (not to mention the time required to port). When Apple's best-in-class user experience is combined with these growing switching costs, the resulting customer loyalty is unparalleled.

The association of German magazine publishers has sent a letter to Steve Jobs (Google translation; German original here) demanding talks about censorship by Apple. The move draws attention to growing concerns about freedom of the press when a single unelected commercial entity has worldwide control over what gets published for iPhone and, especially, iPad."
While the magazine publishers may rightly be concerned about private control of a platform that many of them are counting on for their long-term salvation, the German state is at the very least ambivalent about the subject of censorship. This is the country that has banned Wikileaks, sought a ban on violent games, and voted to censor child porn (only to have the president kill the ban as unconstituitonal).

The two biggest mobile games publishers in the world, EA Mobile and Gameloft, have both a wealth of new iPad games to co-incide with Apple's tablet's international launch.
However, a sixth has launched on Friday: Boggle, based on the word boardgame of the same name.
Meanwhile, Gameloft is pulling out all the stops, with 15 iPad games already available, and seven new ones launching this week.
The seven new titles are Blokus, GT Racing: Motor Academy, Real Football 2010, Chess Classics, Brain Challenge, Gangstar: West Coast Hustle and Real Tennis.
Both publishers have carried across their leading positions in mobile to iPhone in the last two years, and are clearly intent on doing the same on iPad.
Both have invested heavily in iPhone since the launch of the App Store, and been rewarded with regular featured spots on the store, and slots in Apple keynotes.

Chinese website Zol -- which is owned by CBS Interactive -- is reporting that Apple may be moving toward a model of paying Foxconn employees direct subsidies, in the form of small percentages of of the profits from whatever product line they work on. It's also interesting to note that the report claims that Apple has looked into the situation, and found that the general unhappiness of the workers and the recent spate of suicides could be attributed to low wages. The report says that Apple -- which apparently pays Foxconn 2.3 percent of the final retail price for a given product -- will pay an additional amount directly to the workers, which would give a significant boost to the roughly $132 they're currently pulling in per month. The actual payout numbers we're hearing -- around 1 to 2 percent of a retail price of the products manufactured -- don't exactly make sense so we're hoping to get clarification as to the breakdown if the rumor turns out to be true. The report also states that the iPad production line will be the first to benefit from the scheme. We have asked Apple for comment and will update if and when we hear back.

PosiMotion certainly announced this one well enough in advance (all the way back in December), but it looks like its Helix gaming grip for the iPhone and iPod touch is now finally available, and at Best Buy no less. In case your memory needs to be jogged a bit, this $20 contraption promises to be ideal for "virtually any game," and let you use your iPhone or iPod touch in either portrait or landscape mode -- it'll also keep your headphones from getting tangled up for good measure. Still not convinced? Then perhaps the video after the break will change your mind -- chains not included.

A pirated version of an anti-terrorism game made for Windows mobile phones is at the center of a new scam wringing cash out of unwitting victims in the UK. Hidden code within the game silently dials phone numbers in the Antarctic, which can cost upwards of Ł4.25 ($6.19 US) per minute.
Although online con men and spam artists continue to pester our e-lives with promises of money, fame or other inappropriate guarantees, computer scams have an extremely low success rate. Researchers suggest that for every 350 million messages, spammers receive 28 responses, according to the BBC.
Since mobile phones lack the same protection found on computers they have become prime targets for grifters, seeing a threat growth of more than 200% in three years, suggests research by Kasperksy Labs. The penguin-calling version of the game was discovered in April but continues to claim victims as it has been added to multiple websites offering Windows mobile games.
