With Android getting all Flash-ey, Apple's "Goldilocks" position on Flash -- the full Flash player is too hefty, Flash Lite is too weak -- seemed pretty untenable. Now Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen has revealed that Apple and Adobe are "collaborating" on making Flash a reality on the iPhone, citing the technical challenge it presents. What's clear is that with all this work to do, it doesn't seem they're going the watered-down Flash Lite route, but we're trying not to hold our breath for a full-on, Hulu-friendly version that will finally help us get that Doogie Howser fix on the go. Naturally, there's no word on when this will hit.

With the economy lodged so firmly in the toilet we're always glad to see some sort of good news on that front, so check out the latest numbers from comScore that show the market for downloadable time-wasters on smartphones grew by a massive 291 percent in the period between November of 2007 and 2008. That's thanks in large part to the iPhone and its App Store, with sales on that platform alone accounting for 14 percent of all mobile game downloads and nearly one third of all iPhone users reporting they'd downloaded at least one game. That compares quite favorably to non-smartphone users, of whom just 3.8 percent have downloaded a game, driving that market to decline by 14 percent since 2007. Overall the mobile gaming industry bucked recessionary trends, grew a healthy 17 percent, and will now be shopping in the husky clothing section.

f Apple's sat back and let the iPhone hacking community do its thing in peace (well, relative peace) so far, this little gem just might be what the doctor ordered to stir up the crap. Crackulous -- available now in beta form through Cydia -- claims to be able to strip the protection off most apps downloaded from the App Store, meaning that just a single user needs to take the plunge and buy a target app once to get it busted and into free circulation. You need a jailbroken iPhone to get Crackulous loaded, naturally -- you'll see Apple make a Windows Mobile-powered device before you'll see Crackulous in the App Store -- but seeing how PwnageTool is dead simple to use, this puts most users just a couple graphical tools away from foolproof piracy and the golden opportunity to take a few hard-earned bucks out of a programmer's pocket.

iPhone appears to be one of the main drivers behind mobile gaming growth, according to the comScore report released on Friday.
iPhone owners accounted for 14 percent of mobile game downloaders in November, with 32.4 percent of all iPhone users reporting they downloaded a game in the month, compared with a market average of 3.8 percent.
That's nearly 10 times the average. No wonder so many companies are hopping onto the iPhone bandwagon.

I've been playing around with Payback on my iPhone for the past week or so. The game is a top down action game very reminiscent of the original Grand Theft Auto.
Did I say reminiscent? It's really closer to a copycat. I haven't really played it enough yet to write up a formal review, but the game does seem to have some interesting things going for it.

Once again there is rampant grass-fire-like news across the web that Adobe and Apple are working together to bring flash in all of its glory to the iPhone. This is thanks to Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen saying "It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating," going further to say, “The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver.”

RSS Player is the AppStore version of Podcaster which was originally not allowed in the AppStore presumably because of /who knows/, then distributed via ad-hoc, then distributed via our repo on Cydia, and now distributed via the AppStore under its new name RSS Player.
It's free today instead of the normal $4.99. Can't argue with free--especially if you are into Podcasts. Grab it.

Odds are there's not a lot of point in checking your own G1 for the update at this point -- it's just in the hands of a select few so far -- but T-Mobile has confirmed that firmware 1.1 / RC33 is just around the corner with some unspecified pre-Cupcake features and fixes in the mix. At this point, at least one inordinately lucky recipient has reported that the phone now supports Google voice search like we've seen on other platforms; don't get us wrong, that's cool and all, but we're still waiting for our virtual keyboard. 'Bout ready to go whip up some batter and bake it ourselves, if you know what we're saying.

comScore, a digital products consumer research group, has reported that the number of people downloading mobile games grew 17 per cent year-on-year to 8.5 million - with smartphones, such as the iPhone and Blackberry Curve, overtaking traditional mobiles for the first time ever.
"The rapid growth in smartphone adoption in the United States has provided a boost for mobile gaming, as 34 per cent of those downloading a game in November did so using a smartphone," said Mark Donovan, senior analyst, comScore.
The study of US consumers showed that the number of smartphone owners downloading a game nearly tripled, while downloads on traditional phones dipped 14 per cent.
iPhone owners now represented 14 per cent of all downloaded mobile game in November, with 32.4 per cent of all iPhone users reporting they downloaded a game in the month, compared with a market average of 3.8 per cent.
"Last year, not one smartphone appeared in the top 10 devices used for mobile downloads," Donovan explained. "This year, six out of 10 are smartphones, excluding devices with smartphone-like functionality, such as the Instinct and Voyager, which also make appearances."
"As the mobile phone has evolved into a better platform for both playing and merchandising games, the games being offered have also been improved, drawing in a broader user base."
"Over the past year, we have seen mobile gaming expand into a broadening demographic, with strongest growth among teens, who previously eschewed their mobile device in favour of handheld gaming devices, and those 35 and older," Donovan concluded.

There are rumors circulating that the new version of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard has been seeded to some of the top developers for beta testing. The latest build is said to be 10A261. The prior version of Snow Leopard delivered to developers was in December (build 10A222).
According to Macity, the latest version does not seem to contain anything different but does seem to be more stable. They report:
"The interface has not been revised and currently there are only small changes in System Preferences, have been resolved a few bugs in the Finder and little else. According to the sources of Macity the impression is that this release is more reliable than those previously distributed."
Apple has said that they intend to focus on quality and performance in Snow Leopard and there have been rumors for some time saying that Apple has been tweaking the OS to achieve this. Apple has also made it clear that the OS will give exceptional support for multi-core

This morning Google announced that it has new software that will let mobile phone users share their whereabouts with family or friends, and that it will be on the iPhone soon.
It's being called Google Latitude and the technology is a new feature of Google Maps. The software is for mobile devices and it comes with an iGoogle gadget that can be installed on your computer.
Google says:
"Once you've opted in to Latitude, you can see the approximate location of your friends and loved ones who have decided to share their location with you, So now you can do things like see if your spouse is stuck in traffic on the way home from work, notice that a buddy is in town for the weekend, or take comfort in knowing that a loved one's flight landed safely, despite bad weather."
However, even Google acknowledges that this software could be used for stalker-ish purposes but says they have built in "fine-grained privacy

We were on the right track with the Time Crisis Strike trademark. Namco Bandai was working on a new Time Crisis game, but its only for iPhones. Since the $5.99 downloadable game doesn’t come with a tiny little light gun you poke Wild Dog’s enforcers to shoot them with a semi-automatic pistol. Ducking, a hallmark of the Time Crisis series, is done by tilting the phone. Beat Wild Dog in arcade mode and you unlock four additional Crisis Missions to play.
Kudos to Namco Networks for making adaptive controls, but Time Crisis Strike is hardly a new light gun game. I’ll pass on this and keep my fingers crossed for a Nintendo DS or WiiWare port.

We've seen plenty of remarkable kids -- the world is just bursting with them -- and Lim Ding Wen, a nine-year-old from Singapore is no exception. Like his father, Wen enjoys writing iPhone apps in his spare time. His application, called Doodle Kids, is a drawing application for children that he wrote for his two younger sisters, who enjoy drawing, and it's already been downloaded over 4,000 times (we just checked in the App Store and it does indeed appear to be quite popular) since its release on February 1st. Wen, who is fluent in six programming languages and enjoys reading books about -- you guessed it -- computer programming, is already hard at work on his next app, a game called "Invader Wars." We can't wait to see that one!

n many ways modern cellphones are little more than high-tech pieces of jewelry that keep you connected to the world while looking great pressed to your ear. Barb at Etsy's "iPhone G3" earrings eschew all that unnecessary functionality and focus on the aesthetics, shrinking a pair of handsets the same way she miniaturized two Wiimotes, turning them into tiny charms to dangle from your earlobes -- head decor that's sure to light up the eyes of every male geek in the room. A pair are yours for just $22, which is a fair bit more affordable than the real things.

Nintendo's lawyers have finally done what countless children of the '80s only dreamed of: silenced the maniacal, mocking laughter of the Duck Hunt dog. ... Or at least they've quieted the canine on iPhones, having a clone of the classic removed from the App Store after only a month of availability.
Let this serve as a reminder to all who might try a similar stunt ... there's only room for one company in this industry to coast on the past successes of Nintendo.

We're just ten days away from whatever Microsoft has to announce at Mobile World Congress, and it looks like the company is trying to put a halt to the endless rumors that it's developing a phone: WinMo director Scott Rockfield told CNET it's not happening, and another Microsoft spokesman just denied it to the Wall Street Journal. That should be enough to shut people up, right? Of course not -- no denials by anyone ever have been -- but unless Stiv Ballmers actually pulls a Zunephone out of his pocket next week, we're going to assume that Microsoft is on the level with us, persistent rumors of some crazy Tegra-powered superphone notwithstanding. We are willing to believe that the company is planning on rebranding Windows Mobile as "Windows Phone," however -- yeah, it's a Digitimes rumor, but it makes a lot of sense to us, and it's an easy way to capitalize on the launch of a new version. We'll see what happens, we suppose -- honestly, we just want a US launch of the Compulab Exeda.
P.S.- Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet says what's more likely is that Microsoft is working on several Windows Mobile reference hardware designs -- including one based on Tegra -- which we find much more believable and lines up nicely with some other whispers we've heard.

Dataviz, well-known for their Palm OS software, are promising to bring MS Office editing to the iPhone via their new app, DocumentsToGo. The app will be demoed at the Mobile World Congress which runs February 16-19 in Barcelona. The app will also run on Android.
Pricing information has not been released, but the app for Palm OS runs $89.99 in its fullest form, with two lighter version at $49.99 (doesn't support Outlook on that version) and $29.99 (missing a ton of features, like Mac-created doc support). It'd be interesting to see if they stay at that price point or try to go lower - they really have no competition in this arena.

At the New York Comic Con today, Bethesda Softworks executive producer Todd Howard, responsible for overseeing Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls series, said that one of his company's next project is an iPhone game.
Howard dropped the news of pursuing Apple's portable platform during today's "Vs. Mode Live" panel, in which he, BioShock lead Ken Levine, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal and MTV's Stephen Totilo flapped their gums about games to the delight of Comic Con masses. Croal dropped word of the reveal on his Twitter, offering no further info.
For all we know, it could be Fallout Touch. Bethesda is no stranger to portable development, publishing The Elder Scrolls Travels for Java-enabled cell phones and Nokia's N-gage.
Additional highlights from the panel can be reviewed at MTV's summary of the roundtable.

An iPhone Carrier Settings Update was pushed out by iTunes recently. What's in it? Among carrier images for some new carriers like the UAE's Emirates (iPhone should be coming to them in a week or so), carrier images for AT&T's MicroCell (site under maintenance at time of story writing) service are now included. MicroCell is essentially a tiny cell tower which gets 3G signal from broadband internet.

This is the service we've formerly heard referred to as Skyline Skybox. Scott Rockfeld, Director in the Windows Mobile group at Microsoft, gave this public statement today:
"Today, Microsoft's My Phone Web site went live prior to its scheduled debut. However, we are excited about the new Microsoft My Phone service, which will be available as a limited, invite-only beta. This is a significant milestone for Microsoft as it connects the phone to the PC and Web, making mobility a key pillar for the company's software+services strategy.
This new Microsoft cloud service syncs critical information (e.g., contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, text messages, photos, video, etc) on a user's mobile phone to a password protected Web site. Once synchronized, people can easily back-up and restore mobile phone data. My Phone provides an easy to use Web portal where people can access and manage content on the phone, and share that information with others.
My Phone helps people:
• Keep their information backed up if they lose or break their phones.
• Transition information if they switch to new phones.
• Access the same information from their phone or PC."
This is shaping up to be a very interesting service in a number of ways - first, at launch it's going to be free. Second, if you've already got a phone synching with an Exchange server, your calendar/contacts/tasks. This is, essentially, Exchange ActiveSync for the rest of the world who's not using Exchange. We'll see how it plays out - especially how locked-in it is to Windows Live services. Will it play nice if you're using other services? Even if it doesn't, this could be THE killer reason for some people to switch to Windows Live services instead of competing services from Google, Yahoo, etc. Check out the My Phone site for more details.

NES.app emulates the hardware in a Nintendo entertainment system, allowing you to play games on your iPhone. There are many public domain, home-brew games available which have been written for the Nintendo platform, and depending on your country of origin, you may be entitled to play images of commercial games which you rightfully own.
The author does not condone the illegal piracy of copyrighted Nintendo games, and provides no support in obtaining or using pirated images.
NES.app uses an emulator core I call NESCore, which I've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of games written for the Nintendo Entertainment System platform. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge, or compiled code from a public domain / home-brew game. In some cases, and based on your location, you may be legally entitled to posess a ROM image of a game that you presently own. Check your local, state, and federal laws.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more

When the Andriod G1 came out many were dissapointed from the lack of multi-touch support. The iPhone remains the multi-touch king so to speak in the mobile phone business. Many have speculated over the reasoning behind Andriod's lack of multi-touch support while others have added it in themselves later. Finally a Venturebeat source on Google's Andriod team has come clean.
Google has not included multi-touch support in their Andriod platform because Apple asked them not to.
Apple and Google have a good relationship together. Apple has google as the default search engine in the iPhone...

China Mobile and Apple have been trying to come up with an agreement to bring the iPhone to China with three rounds of talks over the last 18 months between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and COO Tim Cook and China Mobile President Wang Jianzhou. The end result of these talks is no iPhone for China
According to an Interfax source in the first round of talks Apple asked for 20-30% of China Mobile's revenues which China Mobile rejected.
In the second round Apple offered to sell iPhone to China Mobile at $600/unit as long as China Mobile agreed to subsidize the phone when selling to its users. China Mobile didn't like that much either.

Syncing the iPhone can be inconvenient. You have to plug in the phone etc etc etc to make sure your contacts and calendars are backed up. If you're like me you get caught with new contacts and calendars on your iPhone, forget to sync to the computer, and then lose them all on a restore (presumably after you ****** up with some sort of modding).
To date probably the simplest way around this problem is the mac solution of MobileMe which syncs your contacts and calendars over-the-air to your account and then to your computer. The problem? MobileMe costs some $$$.
Enter the Google. Something super simple, uses the iPhone's built in functionality (no extra app needed), and best of all Free.

Are you missing a traditional clock screensaver on your Nokia 5800? Due to the new touchscreen's high power consumption, Nokia has abolished the screensaver option altogether. TimeScreen by PhonePhreak Software offers a replacement for a traditional clock screensaver: a screensaver-like sleep mode, which you can activate in those situations where you wish to have the current time ready at one glance - without having to handle the phone.

I downloaded Light Bikes to my iPhone last night, I was surprised to find how fun it was in short blasts.
The 99 cent iGame has you maneuvering a light bike in a third-person perspective ala Tron against three computer-controlled light bikes. The graphics are fairly basic, but it works. You hold the iPhone sideways to play and to turn you tap either the left or right side of the screen. There's also a boost you can tap in the bottom center of the screen.

My favorite thing to do in 1st grade (I think it was first at least... who can remember?) was computer time. An hour a day, we got to play on the computers (Apple ][, baby), which all had the best game ever loaded on them - Oregon Trail (click that link to play it online - sweet). Fight dysentery! Ford rivers! Hunt! Not only was I blazing across the 1848 frontier, as a carpenter from Illinois with my 4 companions, I was also... learning. Egads.
According to IGN, Gameloft is developing an iPhone version of the popular 80s game, complete with updated graphics (although I would pay double if there was an option in the game to use original graphics).

While some of the details still seem to be up in the air at the moment, it looks like that exploding cellphone battery that killed a man shopping at a Lenovo store in mainland China a couple of weeks back was actually not a cellphone battery at all, but rather an actual firearm of some sort. According to some roughly translated reports from Sohu.com, the "imitation firearm with bullets" suddenly fell to the ground at one point, which caused the bullets to fire up into the man's chest and neck arteries, leading to massive blood loss. The Telegraph newspaper further adds that the gun, which they describe as a home-made pistol, also damaged the man's cellphone when it went off, leading to the initial suspicion that the battery may be to blame. So there you have it, folks, while cellphones may or may not kill people, guns (makeshift or otherwise) certainly do.

According to a passing mention in the Wall Street Journal, the Android Market could start accepting for-pay apps as early as this week. We've been expecting such a development to hit this quarter, and it makes sense with that RC33 update in the bag. Unfortunately, this WSJ quote -- pulled a piece on Microsoft's mobile strategy -- is all we've got to go on at the moment. Either way, paid apps are obviously an inevitability, and that financial incentive could be a major boost to the Android ecosystem... or the harbinger or farting apps.

I had some places to get to today and had the opportunity to try out the newest beta 1.2 of xGPS for turn by turn directions with voice navigation while driving to my destinations. It was a pleasure to use and I got where I was going on time without issue. If you haven't jailbroken yet this is yet another reason why you need to. TomTom and TeleNav haven't been able to get the turn by turn voice nav out the door (presumably because of Apple's restrictions) but for jailbreakers a public version of xGPS with both turn by turn and voice nav will be out via the MMi Cydia repo later this month -- maybe even as soon as February 20th!

Many G1/ADP1 owners have been using the app Tetherbot to get internet access on their laptop via USB to the phone’s data connection. The app relied on the Android Debug Bridge to forward ports. It worked, but people wanted a solution better than a SOCKS proxy. The community figured out a way to create a properly NAT’d connection using iptables and then [moussam] rolled them up into easy to use applications. There’s one for setting up a PAN device on Bluetooth and another for adhoc WiFi networking. It requires you to have root on your phone, but hopefully you’ve achieved that and are already running the latest community firmware.

Software vulnerabilities are no stranger to modern, highly-connected smartphones and feature phones alike, and fortunately, the big guys have been pretty good about staying on the ball and patching the serious stuff in a reasonable amount of time. The latest problem discovered in the Android browser's multimedia subsystem really sucks, though -- it's so bad, some security dudes are advising customers to "avoid" using the it altogether until it gets fixed -- and the most frustrating part about it is that it actually is fixed in the Android code trunk, it's just that no one's bothered to roll out an update to G1 users yet. In the meantime, the dude who discovered the problem is advising users to only visit trusted sites and avoid WiFi, so yeah, just don't browse or anything, okay?

Wall-walking sci-fi shooter Prey is set to blast away on the iPhone. IGN reveals that the title, based on the shooter for Xbox 360 and PC, is set to be released on the App Store in the "next few weeks." There's no shortage of experimentation going on with iPhone software at the moment, so perhaps there's room for first-person shooters to bring in the hardcore.
Developer MachineWorks uses an "on-screen virtual analog stick" for players to control protagonist Tommy's actions, with on-screen "buttons" to shoot and use powers. A nice touch is that all the buttons are movable, so gamers can properly position them for maximum alien carnage efficiency. There's also various levels of transparency for the controls, so that you can have it just out of site and not cluttering your HUD. Look for Prey on iPhone it In when the title becomes available.

After a year and a half and many millions of iPhones Jailbroken Apple has finally decided to publicly state that they believe jailbreaking is illegal. Here at MMi we do not believe Jailbreaking is illegal for many reasons. While I could list them all Fred von Lohmann of the Electronic Frontier Foundation which confronts cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights says it best with his statment:
"Jailbreaking an iPhone constitutes copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, says Apple in comments filed with the Copyright Office as part of the 2009 DMCA triennial rulemaking. This marks the first formal public statement by Apple about its legal stance on iPhone jailbreaking.
Apple's iPhone, now the best-selling cellular phone in the U.S., has been designed with restrictions that prevent owners from running applications obtained from sources other than Apple's.

If you've been looking to make a little bank off that awesome flatulence soundboard you put together for the G1, take heart: Google's ready for you. As expected, it's been announced that developers can now submit end-user pricing for applications in the US version of the Android Market, with Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, and Spain coming later in the quarter. It's no big surprise that Google Checkout is the only form of payment accepted, which publishers can sign up for right from the dev site. As for you Yanks, look for the first paid apps to be available for download in the middle of next week.

Uh oh, Ashton, it looks like Apple might have a thing or two to say about that jailbroken iPhone of yours. Every three years the Copyright Office asks for proposed exemptions to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act's rules against breaking access protections, and this time around the lovable scamps at the Electronic Frontier Foundation have asked that jailbreaking phones -- like, yes, the iPhone -- be classified as one of those exceptions. As you might have guessed, Apple's response to the EFF isn't exactly supportive of the idea: it says the proposed rule will "destroy the technological protection of Apple's key copyrighted computer programs in the iPhone device itself and of copyrighted content owned by Apple that plays on the iPhone." Both sides have filed long briefs supporting their positions with extremely detailed legal arguments, but the main takeaways are that the EFF thinks that allowing jailbreaking will result in more apps and innovation, and Apple points out that the App Store is already hugely successful and that jailbroken phones are technically running unauthorized modifications of Apple's copyrighted iPhone code that allows them to run pirated applications. Interestingly, Apple's convoluted App Store approval process is the center of a lot of discussion, and Apple is totally disengeniuous about it, saying there's no "duplication of functionality" rule and as proof claims to have allowed "multiple general web browsers... and multiple mail programs." Note to the Copyright Office: if you believe this we have a very nice bridge to sell you.
Now, let's be clear: while we're definitely hoping the EFF pulls this one out, the worst thing that can result of all this is the status quo -- Apple isn't asking for jailbreaking to specifically be ruled illegal, it's just asking that it not be specifically ruled legal. If that sounds like a fuzzy distinction, well, it is, but that's the sort of gray area that keeps everyone else out of court for the time being. We'll find out more in the spring, when the Copyright Office holds hearings -- final rulings are due in October.

Gadget Mix delved into a fresh Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM and found the inclusion of a "Marketplace" icon there in the honeycomb. Is it Win-Mo's app store, or a more Zune-y integration?
A Windows Mobile app store has been rumored for quite some time, and with everyone else going in that direction, it makes sense for Microsoft to follow. But on top of that, the Ballmer confirmed that Zune Marketplace would be coming to phones a long ways back-what's it going to be, MS?
Obviously, at the moment, the Market isn't live. So we'll just have to wait, until, what, MWC next week?

Even better, TransGaming tells me that Chapter 2 of the iPhone trilogy will be released for free to owners of the original iPhone title as an update. The free update should be hitting in the next week or two and will include another 20 hours of gameplay for people who purchased Chapter 1.

ZOdttd has released a new version of the Snes emulator for Apple iphone, heres whats new:
Updated interface. Includes File Browser, Recents, Save States, and Options.
Loads more than 300 ROMs in a single directory without crashing due to timing out on program load.
Improved the options set for the C-based interpreters. More games now run, and some run better such as Super Mario RPG.
Better auto-frameskip.
Fixed a a few controller bugs. Should react better.
Worked on performance as much as I could. Still it’s best to play games without sound, for a very large performance increase.
Added snesadvance SuperDAT speedhack support. It’s off by default as it can disable sound in some games. I haven’t seen much performance gain to warrant it being on default. It’s been fixed since the beta release and it’s an option now.
Added an option for turning on and off transparencies to gain performance.
Added a framerate counter option for debug purposes.
Skins are back to being supported!
More and more.

You've probably never heard of Picsel Technologies, but the Scottish company claims that its technologies are in over 250m handsets worldwide from manufacturers like Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Samsung and Sony Ericsson -- and, if a lawsuit it filed today is to be believed, Apple. Picsel says the iPhone infringes on a patented method of accelerated screen updating, and as usual, the answer is probably going to be for Uncle Steve to open his $25 billion piggy bank and dole out some cash. On the other hand, Apple legal could might take a little batting practice before they start hunting the big game, but honestly, that's just us wishing for a little Friday night drama.

Looks like the zany folks over at ZiiLabs have more in store for us. They've announced that they'll be demoing HD video playback for Android with their ZMS-05 CPU at MWC (which starts on Monday, February 16th). So -- in essence, there's not too much new here -- the chip was on-hand at CES -- but we're happy to see it befriending old Android. There'll surely be more info coming out of Barcelona over the next week, but until then, you'll have to make due with the press release which is after the break.

[Pedram] Sent us his USB missile launcher interface project. He happened to have some of the USB missile launchers lying around. having lost their initial draw, he wanted to do something to spice it up. He wrote an interface in python so he could control the launcher via his iPhone. We don’t see how this is any different than controlling them by the computer, but he seems to have put a decent amount of work into it.

The Palm Pre isn't pulling any punches when it comes to attacking iPhone weaknesses. It has copy and paste, data tethering and will support Adobe's Flash.
Flash was confirmed to Newsweek's Dan Lyons weeks ago, but now they're being open about the support.
Palm has joined Adobe's Open Screen Project—an industry initiative designed to bring full web browsing and Flash-based apps to televisions, desktops and mobile devices. So, by definition, this will not only bring a complete web-browsing experience to the Palm Pre, it could also result in the development of standalone Flash apps for the webOS platform. The Flash player for smartphones is expected to be released by the end of the year.

Here's an interesting one-off about Windows Mobile 6.5. Microsoft has mandated that all phones running the OS feature a physical "Start" button.
Using the Start button will not take you to the Home screen, like the Zune, but to that trademark honeycomb icon screen that's new to Windows Mobile 6.5. As much as we like touchscreens, mandating a hard button in the 6.5 spec seems like a smart decision from Microsoft—one that should keep widely varied phones running the OS doing so with some level of consistency.

Nokia today unveiled two new additions to its Eseries range, the Nokia E75 and Nokia E55, which are the first to ship with the company's new email user interface. Both devices also come standard with Nokia Messaging that, when added to the company's corporate email clients, gives people the most efficient solution for accessing the world's consumer and corporate email on the go.
With the latest Eseries devices, people will no longer need to boot up a PC to get a full desktop email experience. The enhanced email UI includes folder and HTML email support, expandable views and sorting capability by date, sender and size, as well as the most commonly used email functions just a single click away. On top of email, the devices also offer improved calendar capability, as well as contacts and task management. "With the Nokia E75 we took a lot of inspiration from the Nokia 9300, which was our first mini communicator," adds Oistamo. "Owners of the Nokia 9300 loved the messaging functionality a full keyboard provided, but also used the traditional phone keypad a great deal. With the Nokia E75 we kept these essential ingredients, significantly upgraded all of the features and made it as compact as possible."
"When we launched the Nokia E71 last year, we really set a new standard for just how compact a full QWERTY device could be," continues Oistamo. "We have continued on this theme and have come back with the world's most compact messaging device, the Nokia E55." With the benefits of a compact QWERTY keyboard - as well as one click access to the most commonly use programs - reading, managing and responding to emails is quick and efficient. Another standout feature is the extensive battery life, with the Nokia E55 providing up to 28 days of standby time.
Added to the Nokia Messaging service, both devices come with full Nokia Maps and assisted GPS with integrated 3-month license for turn-by-turn navigation, and a great gaming experience with N-Gage on board. With Ovi Files, also included on the Nokia E75, important files stored on a PC can be remotely managed and shared, even when your PC is switched off.
Specifications of the E75 include:
* 112 x 50 x 15 mm, 139g
* Red, Silver/black and Copper/Yellow
* Nokia Messaging Service
* N-Gage
* 3.2 megapixel camera, VGA video recording
* A-GPS
* HSDPA, Wi-Fi
* 3.5 mm jack / TV out
* Standby: Up to 11 days (GSM), 11 days (WCDMA)
* Talk time: Up to 5.4 hrs (GSM), 4.2 hrs (WCDMA)
* BL-4U 1000 mAh Li-Polymer battery
* microUSB port, USB charging
The Nokia E75 is expected to ship in March at an estimated retail price of 375 EUR, before taxes and subsidies. The Nokia E55 is expected to ship in the second quarter at an estimated retail price will be 265 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.

Since the first Nokia Navigator made its appearance two years ago, the company has been updating and improving its location based services steadily and has now introduced the latest arrival in its Navigator line, the Nokia 6710 Navigator. Another new arrival is the Nokia 6720 Classic, which builds on the Nokia heritage of traditional candybar phones that excel in all areas.
The Nokia 6710 Navigator includes the latest developments in the Maps software with real time 'drive and walk' navigation, full regional maps and hardware elements like the dedicated navigator key, touch area for easy zooming and a large display optimized for outdoor viewing. The recent integration of Maps with Ovi allows people to pre-plan their journey at home on their PC and synchronize with their mobile device. Additionally, Maps has been updated to include a number of new features such as high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for over 200 cities, terrain maps, weather service, premium travel and events content and traffic and safety warnings. With both of the new devices including a compass, working in conjunction with the new features of Maps, the pedestrian navigation experience has been significantly improved.
Included inbox is the Nokia CR-111 car holder, which cradles the Nokia 6710 Navigator easily in the car and completes the driving navigation solution. For those that want a little extra, there is a new arrival from Nokia accessories in the Nokia Speakerphone HF-310, which boasts high quality hands free with echo cancellation and noise reduction. The speakerphone is easy to use in the car or office and can be installed easily with three different fixings.
To complement the impressive mapping capabilities, both the Nokia 6710 Navigator and the Nokia 6720 classic offer an improved design with a slightly curved shape, providing a pleasant feel with a soft touch surface. When holding the devices to take photos with the 5 megapixel camera, standard with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash on both handsets, the new shape makes them easier to hold.
The Nokia 6720 classic makes sure that people also get the best voice experience with the curved design fitting perfectly to the users face and new active noise cancellation, a feature appearing for the first time in the Nokia 6720 Classic, which significantly improves the quality of voice by cutting down on external ambient sounds. Of course, all other features one requires are easily accessible with up to 20 days of standby time, high speed uplink and downlink Internet access and a TV-out connection for sharing images and video.
Features of the Nokia 6710 include:
* S60 3rd Edition platform
* Dimensions: 104.8x50.1x14.9 mm
* 2.6" inch outdoor optimized QVGA display (320 x 240 pixels)
* Weight: 117 g
* 5 MPix Carl Zeiss camera with high quality flash
* High speed Internet access (HSDPA/HSUPA and WLAN)
* 50 MB user memory, 2GB microSD card, support for up to 16 GB
* Built-in GPS with A-GPS support
* Nokia Maps 3.0
* Integrated compass pedestrian guidance
* Access to locations, maps and routes with Navigator key
* Maps support in Calendar, Contacts and Gallery
* Zoom area for easy browsing and easy zooming of maps and images
* Drive and Walk navigation included with premium content such as real time traffic information, current whether, POI content eg movies, events etc.
* Regional maps preloaded on the device
* Navigation ready to use without SIM-card
* Full voice-guidance
The Nokia 6720 classic is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of 245 EUR before taxes and subsidies. The Nokia 6710 Navigator will join in the third quarter with an estimated retail price of 300 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.

I posted about My Phone last week, but my understanding of it was incorrect - which is kind of funny given that I was part of a briefing about it at Mobius in late 2008. What can I tell you other than it's painful to try to keep track of all these Microsoft "sky-codename" services.
My Phone is, currently, strictly a backup program. It's not "Exchange for everyone else" like I thought, though clearly the team is thinking along those lines. At launch, My Phone is simply a way to keep your contacts, calendar, tasks, text messages, photos, videos, music, and documents backed up to Microsoft servers so, in case of phone loss or damage, your stuff will be protected. It's not a cloud sync tool like I first thought, but the pieces are certainly there to allow for that. It's not a substitute for a program such as Spb Backup [affiliate] for instance, because it won't keep an image of your device with all your programs installed.
Document types supported for sync are ppt, xls, doc, one, wks) as well as txt, rtf, pdf, html and xml. It's kind of curious that it wouldn't just allow you to specify a folder and take everything in it. It will work over WiFi, so if you have a limited data account you can use WiFi for your initial sync then use your data plan for updates beyond that.
At launch, Microsoft is offering 200 MB of storage, and the service is free. Right now it's advertising driven, but it's simple enough for Microsoft to add carrier branding and you'd have "Verizon My Phone" or something similar. It will work with any Windows Mobile 6.0 or 6.1 smartphone, both Standard and Professional devices. If your phone already has Exchange sync, that takes priority over your Contacts / Calendar / Tasks, which makes sense. Multiple phones are going to be supported - apparently it's going to be as many as you want. I suspect that 200 MB is per account though, not per phone, so if you have four phones you'll still have 200 MB total. Premium accounts with more storage is an option Microsoft is considering. After the break are some screen shots of My Phone.

t was about this time last year when we heard that LG was aiming to push out Android-powered handsets by 2009, and sure enough, it looks like it'll happen by this summer. According to T3, the company's altogether bubbly KS360 will be relaunched with Google's operating system, though the actual specifications (outside of the OS, obviously) will remain the same. Marketing Manager Jeremy Newing also confirmed at Mobile World Congress that LG would be releasing two other Android phones this year, though he wouldn't divulge any model names or favorite colors for us to guess.

Skype and Nokia today announced a partnership that will bring the world's leading Internet communications experience to the Nokia range of mobile computers. Under the terms of the cooperation, Skype will be integrated into Nokia devices, starting with the Nokia Nseries. The Nokia N97 flagship device will be the first to incorporate the Skype experience in the 3rd quarter of 2009.
The Skype experience will be part of the address book of the Nokia N97, enabling presence - seeing when Skype contacts are online - as well as instant messaging. Nokia N97 owners around the world will also be able to use 3G and WLAN to easily make and receive free Skype-to-Skype voice calls, in addition to low-cost Skype calls to landlines and mobile devices.
"Making Skype available everywhere through mobile devices is essential to fulfilling our vision of 'enabling the world's conversations'," said Scott Durchslag, Skype's Chief Operating Officer. "Collaborating closely with Nokia to preload and integrate our software onto their devices will benefit the many Nokia customers who already use Skype, as it makes Skype easily accessible and simple to use on the go. It will also bring Skype new users who love Nokia's Symbian S60 experience."
"With more than 400 million Skype users worldwide, the integration of Skype on Nokia Nseries mobile computers is a significant step in bringing converged Internet experiences from the desktop to the world's most advanced mobile computer," said Jose-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nokia Nseries.

Dear Whoever is in charge of this sinking ship,
This games journalism thing has been great, really it has, but word around the campfire says iPhone development is the wave of the future. So, with dreams of owning my own "dive-able" pit of money, like Scrooge McDuck, I'm totally outta here. You can't be surprised. Ethan Nicholas is just one of the developers rolling fat wads of dough after releasing the game iShoot, which was demoed by over 2.4 million users and shot to the top of the most purchased games list when he released a free trial version, iShootLite.
According to Nicholas, he earned $37,000 in a single day with tiny iMoneyMachine. Do you have any idea how many news posts (and lolcats) that is? Right now, iShoot hovers within the Top Ten games on the iTunes App Store -- a store made up of about 20,000 applications -- and Nicholas thinks the small tank artillery game will make him a millionaire by years end.
Now, I don't know anything about programing on iPhone -- nor do I have the patience to read a bunch of online FAQs to learn how, like Nicolas did -- but my plan is pretty solid: 1) Kidnap iPhone developers 2) Steal their ideas 3) ??? 4) PROFIT. Peace out, suckers!

HTC and Google are getting closer to perfection with the new Android G2, the HTC Magic. Nice finish, great form factor. Check out our video, including the obligatory comparison with Apple's iPhone, and hands-on impressions:
The bad news first: Apart from my gripes about the user interface—which are still there—there is one but. A big BUT, bigger than Ramona's, the planetary lady with accidental moustache who serves the bocadillos down at one of the fair's restaurants: The software keyboard. On this first touch, the keyboard felt cramped, probably a result of the screen size, which is smaller than the iPhone's—which is the obvious soft keyboard reference, since it was the first one to implement a finger-touch software keyboard.
In addition to that, there's an additional user interface problem, this time having to do with perception: Instead of popping up above your finger—like in the iPhone so you can clearly see what you pressed—the keys appear on the sides. They flash quickly as you press them, and I found it extremely distracting. They said that they put them on the sides not to obstruct the view, but knowing the over-the-key implementation in the iPhone's software keyboard, it doesn't make much sense. Furthermore, when you are typing with one finger only—like I often do—you will be obstructing the view of the flashing key with your finger. The reason: When you type on the right side of the keyboard, the flashing keys appear on the left. When you click on the right, they pop out on the left.
Other than this, the rest is great. There's a new Google Mail feature to delete or classify mail in bulk, as well as a faster camera, which now can take video—which obviously means you can play back video as well. The rest of the interface and features is what you already have in the Android G1. However, what really steals the show here is the hardware itself.
HTC has got a very smooth phone, which feels great on your hands and in your pants' pockets. While it's sightly thicker than the iPhone, the narrower, rounded body, and weight makes it feel the same size. For sure, a lot less bulky than the G1, which looks like a brick next to this. And as you have seen in the shots, the final HTC Magic is quite pretty. Have no doubt: This thing alone will make many consumers put up with the less-than-ideal software keyboard.
Overall, the first feeling is that we got a potential winner here. If they can manage to make the software keyboard better, Apple will definitely have a formidable enemy in the Android G2.

Gaming commissions in Nevada are informing casinos that a new card counting program has made its way to the Apple iPhone, called Hi Lo. This program can be used in the Stealth Mode. When the program is used in the Stealth Mode the screen of the phone will remain shut off, and as long as the user knows where the keys are located the program can be run effortlessly without detection. Randall Sayre, of the Nevada Gaming Commission says 'Use of this type of program or possession of a device with this type of program on it (with the intent to use it), in a licensed gaming establishment, is a violation of NRS 465.075

Pocket Gamer reports that a development studio called Indiagames is working on two separate licensed versions of BioShock for mobile devices. A video was shown for the familiar-looking 3D version, and they're doing a 2D adaptation as well. Indiagames' Sean Malatesta said it was in the final approval stages, and that "our guys and 2K have really captured the essence of the game in a 2D format. It's really unbelievable. It obviously doesn't look like BioShock as you know it, but it gives you the same essence. The guys are pretty proud of it."

I previously mentioned at the end of our xGPS post that Sygic would be showing off their turn-by-turn navigation app at the Mobile World Conference this week and low and behold they did! Dieter Bohn of theiphoneblog had the opportuntiy to grab some shots and check out what Sygic has done.
The application looks very pretty with the fancy 3d view and is also packed with the features you would expect like voice prompts, POIs, multiple country support, directions, the maps stored locally on the phone (Europe=2gb), etc etc etc.
The bad news? The public probably will not see this app any time soon. Sygic plans on submitting it to the AppStore soon and the odds of it being rejected are nearly 100% since...

AS expected and falling right in line with the Adobe and iPhone flash over-hype schedule we have more news concerning iPhone flash from Adobe!
On Tuesday an Adobe spokeswomen first refused to comment when asked for confirmation whether or not Apple and Adobe are really working together to bring flash to the iPhone. The question was prompted by Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen saying that "It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating," a couple weeks ago which implied that Apple and Adobe were working together to make the flash happen.
The Adobe spokeswoman did give out a few statements that imply the exact opposite of Adobe CEO Narayen's statements. She said "We think Flash availability on the iPhone benefits the millions of joint Apple and Adobe customers, and we want to work with Apple to bring these

We sat down with Palm today and in addition to spotting that soft-touch cover we chatted them up on where things stand, how things are progressing, and various other clarifications about webOS and the Pre that have yet to be made. Palm's staying pretty tight-lipped and under-the-radar at the show, despite bringing a Europe-friendly HSDPA handset to show off -- they're not making any big announcements along those lines until there's a carrier firmed up, and not even clarifying what bands are supported. The build of webOS is exactly the same as what was at CES, and Palm still isn't letting the device slip out of its firm grip for a bit of rogue hands-on time.
Palm did confirm that games are in development for webOS, and seems a little defensive at accusations that the OS can't handle that stuff -- Palm hasn't changed its stance on app development, of course, there are no "native" apps allowed currently, but they seem more reticent to admit that web-style app development will limit gaming options. Perhaps they're hoping Adobe's Open Screen Project will save them some grief on this front, since Flash will be ready for webOS by the end of the year. Palm's currently working with a small amount of developers in private beta, refining the SDK to their feedback and needs, and will slowly expand that as the phone approaches launch, but we don't expect a full SDK to reach Joe the Coder until very close to before or after the launch. We asked about the potential for a soft keyboard, and they said that there's no reason that developers couldn't build their own -- though we're not sure how that would work. Out of the gate developers won't have super deep access to the OS from what we understand -- they wouldn't be able to do something like Facebook's level of OS-wide contacts integration, for instance -- but Palm hopes to open those APIs up further down the line.
We get the impression that Palm feels version 1.0 of webOS is very feature complete, and that the most surprises we'll get from here to launch will be mostly along the lines of 3rd party development and release details.

The Oregon Trail is hitting the road from standard mobile to a more evolved form on iPhone and iPod Touch. Gameloft is set to make the title -- in which players take their band of settlers from Independence, MI to Willamette Mall Valley in Oregon -- available on the App Store, either February 28 or March 1. Gameloft has yet to announce an official price for the game.
This next-gen mobile Trail has eight "skill-based" minigames, with some using the accelerometer. Of course, the title will also include the standard laundry list of random events and diseases to keep players on their toes. 'Cause, you know, it's just not The Oregon Trail unless some poor child dies of dysentery

Following in Microsoft's footsteps Apple's iWork 09 documents are not backwards compatible. What does this mean? Files saved in any iWork 09 application (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) will not open with iWork 08 unless you choose to save it in iWork 08's format. Apple has published a nice little page explaining iWork 09 and iWork 08 compatibility -- or lack of.
When Microsoft did the same thing creating new document formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) to go along with the release of Office 2007 much of the world was outraged. Businesses were immediately effected because files saved in the default format with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 07 would not open using previous Microsoft Office versions. People would email out documents only to be notified that the recipients couldn't open them because they didn't have the newest version of Office wasting time, energy, and money. Inconvenient.

The AppStore isn't the perfect place for business. There have been many cries from developers for change and Apple has worked towards making the AppStore a better place with minor updates like separating top paid and top free apps, having top apps listed by category, etc.
Getting a little more scientific on the subject of AppStore success Pinch Media has but together a very nifty slideshow (below) of what they believe to be the secrets of AppStore succes like release timing, pricing, quality, marketing, the reviews, competitor actions, duplication, etc. Check out the Slide Show for some pretty charts and graphs. While it wont give you the perfect formula for "Making it" the Slide Show does give some good guidance in the right direction.

Those characters are all that is keeping the iPod Touch 2g from a tether-less Jailbreak. The Dev team have already released both tethered and semi tethered jailbreak. With some more playing they now have the iPod Touch 2g within 8 bytes of booting without a tether. With a little work you can even create a dongle yourself to boot your Jailbroken iPod Touch while on the go.
The video above by MuscleNerd demonstrates a dongle in action. Expect instructions on how to make this happen soon via The Dev Team.

We love Boxee. We think that their iPhone remote app on Cydia is really cool. We think their software/service is awesome. We think Boxee was great for for watching some Hulu. Unfortunately Hulu doesn't seen to agree with the awesomeness. While Hulu captivated us with its really great Super Bowl commercial and then captivated us further when we realized it was Boxee compatibility we are not captivated by Hulu's statements of why they are removing themselves from Boxee.
Quotes from Hulu CEO Jason Kilar's Blog:
"Later this week, Hulu's content will no longer be available through Boxee."
- That sucks.

Although there isn't really any doubt that there is a new iPhone on its way for Summer 2009 it's always fun to have repeated confirmation. According to a ThinkEquity Partners report concerning the market of flash memory Apple is grabbing up massive quantities of flash memory leaving the market dry. Even companies like SanDisk which don't even supply Apple with memory are feeling the effects of Apple's buying Spree.
There may even be a lack of worldwide flash supply with Apple's aggressive purchasing. Samsung, the largest producer of flash memory in the world with 40% of world production, is completely sold out of flash memory through April 2009. All memory that Samsung makes until then goes straight to Apple. Can't wait till June and hopefully a 32 GB iPhone.

dmit it, you want some Cupcake, but you're afraid of ditching the physical keyboard altogether. Good news for those of you who've snagged an Android Dev Phone 1, because your wish may be our command. The guys at Make have the lowdown on how to flash Cupcake to the device and experience that on-screen keyboard in all its glory. The hacked OS certainly wasn't ready for primetime, and that hotly-anticipated soft keyboard was still a little buggy -- but there is some hope for using the phone with one hand. We'll bet Google / T-Mobile keep this one in the oven a bit longer until it's ready to take on the masses, but at least we're seeing some fresh baked goodness on something other than the Magic. There's video of the Macguyver'd OS in action after the break.

Taneli Armanto was the one who programmed the Snake game built in Nokia mobile phones in the '90s (Nokia 6110, 5110, 8210, etc.) about eleven years ago. The game gained some popularity and actually started the mobile gaming industry. Since those days, many new versions of Snake appeared, but none of them closely resembled the original "6110 version". Tired of waiting for someone to make it, Taneli decided to re-create the original Snake game using Python interpreter environment for the S60 3rd Edition platform. So here it comes, the ORIGINAL Snake game as seen for the first time in the Nokia 6110, made again by the ORIGINAL author.

Zodttd has posted a new emulator for the Apple Iphone, heres the details:
Thanks to the amazing developer Exophase, temper4iphone is now available for jailbroken iPhone & iPod Touch users. You may know Exophase as the developer of gpSP, the Gameboy Advance emulator for the PSP & GP2X of which gpSPhone is based on. Exophase also made a Turbo Grafx-16 / Turbo-CD (PC-Engine / PC-CD) emulator for the GP2X from the ground up. temper4iphone is a port and frontend for Temper. There are many great games from the TG-16/TG-CD. These games include many shmups like Rtype Complete & Blazing Lazers, pinball games such as Devil’s Crush, and platformers such as Bonk. There is also the first Castlevania game on here called Dracula X. You can download temper4iphone v1.0.0 via Cydia in the Games section.
There is no BIOS needed for TG-16 / PC-Engine games, but you will need syscards for CD based games. Syscards should be installed after installing temper4iphone as syscard1.bin syscard2.bin syscard3.bin at: /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/TEMPER/syscard
The ./ROMs/TEMPER directories will be installed automatically upon installation of temper4iphone, in the fashion of most my emulator releases.
For CD based games you will want ISO+OGG+CUE rips. The data is ripped as CUE+ISO and the music is in OGG format.For TG-16 / PC-Engine games, their filename extension is PCE. Both the CD and ROM game files go in: /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/TEMPER
I hope you enjoy this release…Thanks!

Anyone who's ever played LocoRoco has been guilty of it. You just can't help but tip your PSP to the left or right, trying for that extra smidgen of incline to get your gelatinous balls of goo rolling, even though you know it has no real effect. But in ngmoco's Rolando, the controls are all about the angle of your system, and it makes for some of the most fun you can have on your iPhone.

[ghostwalker] has put together instructions for running X11 on your Android device. This means you can run a full-blown Linux desktop environment on your phone. It requires you to already have a Debian shell on the phone, which we covered earlier. Instead of having to come up with a custom display driver, it’s hooked to a VNC server. You can connect to it using an Android VNC viewer on the phone or via any other VNC client. The how-to suggests either IceWM or the even lighter-weight LXDE for a window manager. You could potentially install Gnome or KDE, but we’d be surprised if it was any faster than dog slow. Let us know if you have any success with this and what you think the best use is.

February 24th, 2009, 20:57 Posted By: wraggster
Zodttd posted a great newspost detailing why emulation is at this time slower on the iphone/ipod touch
Here’s a little editorial by me… Today I was asked why the iPhone & iPod Touch runs emulators slower than the GP2X. This is an excellent question which I’d like to address. Many of the emulators I port over to the iPhone come from the GP2X. The GP2X is a 200MHz ARM920T processor based homebrew-friendly handheld. The iPhone for instance, has an ARM11 processor running at about 412MHz. You’d think if I were to take the same code from the GP2X and get it running on the iPhone, it would run faster. Sadly that’s wrong. It seems there’s quite a few factors in the way of getting certain types of applications such as emulators running to their full potential on the iPhone.
Take for example snes4iphone. In this case there were many optimizations done in tightly written ARM assembly for the assorted chipsets the SNES uses within the PocketSNES software being ported. The sad fact was I was unable to use most of that assembly code as it would take major rewrites and time to get it to work on the iPhone. The reason for this is the iPhone & iPod Touch’s operating system keeps a register globally allocated. This register, R9, can not be used in the majority of ARM assembly code out there for emulators (there are instances where you can save and restore this register to use it). So I have to drop back to a slower C/C++ interpreter for emulation. The same holds true for dynarecs used in gpSPhone and psx4iphone. Losing a register in a dynarec tends to bring performance down. Basically, existing ARM assembly (fast) can’t be used, dynarecs lose a register making them slower, and we’re left with generally the slowest form of interpreters.
Next we have the fact we are dependant on touch controls. I’ve noticed, and others have too, that touching the screen at more than one point at the same time (multitouch) and moving a bit will slow down my emulators. In fact it should slow down anything hogging the CPU. PocketPC’s also tend to have this issue come up. There’s not much that can be done to get around it except make the program you use fast enough to handle the extra load multitouch equates to. This is difficult when we’re already being slowed down by other factors. Then add a translucent screen overlay for landscape play and your emulator gets an instant and large performance hit. This too is noticed when the emulator is question can’t handle the extra load placed on it by the feature.
Another factor is the operating system itself. It keeps background processes going which can suck up RAM, chew up precious CPU time, or both. What else you find out is there is no way to directly access the framebuffer (though I’ve tried and got close) to simply blit pre-rendered frames to the screen. The iPhone & iPod Touch didn’t seem to be designed with the thought in mind that some games, and especially emulators will pre-render a frame to display in memory, then copy that memory to the screen X times a second to get it’s X FPS. Instead we’re left with two options. For jailbroken devices we have the Private Framework CoreSurface. CoreSurface lets us write directly to a CALayer of a view. But this is not the same as writing to a framebuffer, and you have the overhead of calling setNeedsDisplay which lands up drawing other views and generally slowing things down where it not need be.Then you have CoreGraphics which lets you do something similar to CoreSurface during the drawRect portion of setNeedsDisplay, and also takes longer in the process. Why not OpenGL? Well we’re stuck with Open GL ES 1.1, and 1.1 doesn’t include the functionality needed for doing this any faster than what we have already. In fact it’s usually slower, and some have benchmarked blitting a frame to the 320×480 screen as 15FPS slow
Speaking of frameworks, we have AudioToolbox. This framework works great for streaming music, but when you want to stream audio being generated at specific intervals, you land up getting a very touchy timing situation. When dealing with OSS for Linux then coming to AudioToolbox, there will be some stress involved seeing how many buffers in your ring to use. Then tweaking that alongside the best buffer size to get by with decent audio is a pain. Change the audio rate and it all goes out of whack. It would be nice to have more control of the callbacks and their intervals when it comes to AudioToolbox, but this is what we deal with.
And finally we have the simple premise of writing more pixels to the screen and adding (even hardware based) scaling and rotation for things like landscape mode just plain ole slow things down. The GP2X has a 320×240 screen. The iPhone & iPod Touch have twice that, at 320×480. When you have a higher resolution screen and, for instance, no hardware to handle rendering at a lower resolution…you’re left with slowdowns.
Part of what I enjoy about working on these emulators for systems like the iPhone/iPod Touch and GP2X are the ways to work around these issues and still deliver something that works. If you’re wondering why an emulator “is slow” istead of “why isn’t it possible”, then I’ve done my job.
Thanks,
ZodTTD

Witness the story of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as told via the iPhone, in the action-packed official trailer for Metal Gear Solid Touch. As revealed last week, Metal Gear Solid Touch basically retells the story of Metal Gear Solid 4 from a different perspective, with an over-the-shoulder view of Solid Snake's mullet as you tap the screen to take out enemies. I suppose it will be nice for those who want a quick synopsis of the story without have to sit through all of the cutscenes, but beyond that it doesn't look all that exciting. Having said that, it will sell millions.

In a recent interview with MTV.com id Software founder John Carmack spilled the beans revealing id's plans to bring the classic titles of Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein to the iPhone.

But literally before I came in on this interview, I was going around poking with some of our old titles. I’m really looking forward to bringing over an id classics line — start with “Wolfenstein 3D” and go through “Doom” and “Quake” and bring pretty much all of them over to the iPhone because I’m a really big booster of the platform. And it frustrates me to no end that here we are without product

In lieu of his announcement that he will not be continuing development of Stacks after version 2.2 Steven Troughton-Smith has revealed that his next iPhone project will be Dashboard. For those that are unfamiliar with OS X, Dashboard is a nifty little area that holds/displays widgets like clock, currency converters, weather, dictionary, and countless more all on one screen.
Dashboard on the iPhone could be a very neat way to throw a bunch of useful but compact widgets on one screen of the iPhone for quick access and we hope to see it released sometime soon. The video above is by Steven and is his Dashboard program running within the SDK. Looks smooth so far.

Sure, we're still anticipating -- but not necessarily merrily -- the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, but for those who wish to look even farther into the future, Microsoft head honcho Steve Ballmer said in a conference call this week that WinMo 7 will be out sometime next year. That jibes pretty well with what we've heard from Motorola and ZDNet before, although there's probably a dozen or so known unknowns that could push it well into 2011 or beyond. For now, however, we're willing to take Steve at his word. Hey, at least they're not gearing up for a Windows Mobile 6.75 in the interim... right?

Analyst predicts that "iPod Touch could be final nail in PSP's coffin"
Sony’s surprise announcement of a number of big-hitting PSP titles yesterday proves that it remains firmly committed to its portable platform – but one analyst has said that Apple could yet prove to be a fatal thorn in Sony’s side.
Speaking to MCV’s sister site CasualGaming.biz today, Game Brief’s Nicholas Lovell stated: “The iPod Touch is rapidly becoming the portable media player of choice amongst a younger audience, exactly the place that Sony wanted to be with the PSP.
“But the iPod doesn’t have expensive processors or a unique format disc like the UMD; it is an easy-to-use device that offers consumers their music, podcasts, short-form video and accessible games on the move and in my opinion, will be the final nail in the PSP’s coffin.”

"Ballmer re-affirmed his oft-repeated statement that Microsoft will not be making a Microsoft Phone, saying it was committed to the licensing model... Regarding the operating system itself, Steve Ballmer mentioned the unveiling of Windows Mobile 6.5 last week, and also clearly stated Windows Mobile 7 will be coming next year. He noted that he felt the continuing expansion of the smartphone segment into the whole phone segment should help Windows Mobile to continue growing despite the downturn in the economy, and that Windows Mobile is particularly well suited for low cost smartphones with many different from factors."

Back in January we covered ZumoDrive Beta cloud storage and then showed a first look of their iPhone App. As of earlier this week ZumoDrive has gone from beta to public and made some major updates to the service while they were at it.
With the beta I had two major issues. The pricing was a concern with 70GB of cloud storage running a whopping $20.99/mo. Many others also voiced their opinions about the pricing and the folks at ZumoDrive listened. While pricing is still slightly higher than their competitors, the ZumoDrive service is also more innovative making it worthwhile (at least for me and my iTunes library).

The iPhone (2.2 +) comes pre-loaded with Emoji icons but the menus to turn them on aren't enabled. If you aren't familiar with Emoji icons they are popular pictures/emotions used in Japanese wireless messages. The iPhone comes pre-loaded with these little icons but the menus are disabled.
Aside from the Cydia download to enable them there are many applications on the AppStore like Typing Genius ($0.99) and Spell Number (free) that enable these Emoji icons. Apple doesn't seem to like developers on the AppStore enabling this Easter egg on its devices. Apple removed the application

How bout CSI Miami full episodes streamed to your iPhone, legally... for free? CBS Interactive's TV.com give you just that. There aren't a ton of shows up yet (at least not full episodes), but CSI, Star Trek (the original!), and Gossip Girl (you know you've seen it) are all there.
TV.com (its an app, AND a website!) allows you to create "feeds" of shows you'd like based on keywords. You put in a few shows you like or terms, and the app creates a specialized feed of content you'd enjoy.
I'm sure more full shows will be coming quickly.
The app works over WiFi or 3G, and is available now for the low low price of free in the AppStore.

Nokia made plenty of folks happy with its decision to include Skype on its new N97 handset, and future N-series devices, but it looks like the usual cadre of UK carriers aren't among them, and they're now making their displeasure quite clear. That includes O2 and Orange, who are apparently threatening to refuse stock of the N97 unless Nokia strips out the Skype client, a point they have reportedly made directly to Nokia in "high-level discussions." Another unnamed "operator source" was apparently even more blunt, saying that this is "another example of them trying to build an ecosystem that is all about Nokia and reduces the operator to a dumb pipe," adding that, "some people like 3 may be in a position where it could make sense to accept that. But if you spend upwards of Ł40m per year building your brand, you don't want to be just a dumb pipe do you?" For its part, Nokia seems to be staying mum on the matter for the time being, though it's tough to see a handset like the N97 just sitting on the shelf, so it seems like one party or the other will have to give sooner or later.

Taito has announced that iPhone and iPod Touch users can access versions of Space Invaders and Cooking Mama in the app store now. The Space Invaders game available in the app store is of the classic variety, but features "full use of the motion sensor and other iPhone 3G and iPod Touch input methods." As for Cooking Mama, the version available for the iPhone and iPod Touch includes "both favorite recipes from past console installments as well as a variety of dishes completely new to the series" and has been enhanced to "make the most of the iPhone 3G / iPod touch's multi-touch screen accelerometer." You can find Cooking Mama and Space Invaders in the app store now for $6.99 and $4.99, respectively.
In addition to new games for Apple platforms, Taito has also announced plans to support Android. T-Mobile users will be able to pick up Arkanoid and Space Invaders now for $5.99 each.

As I see it, the biggest problem Apple's iPhone faces as a gaming platform is the flood, the sheer wall of games now available on the system.
The last I heard, and I'm sure it's well past this by now, is that there are 15,000 applications on the App Store right now, many of them games.
I try to check in on the App Store daily but find it hard to keep up with what's new and what's worthwhile. Worse still, the games are so popular that they tend to push out all other applications in the broader categories like What's Hot and What's New and Top 25.
Pocket Gamer recently sat down with Apple's senior product manager for iPhone worldwide marketing to talk about the issue and a few other things.

The initial AppStore rating system allowed anyone to review the apps without purchasing which flooded the appstore with some stupid reviews by foolish people (no offense!).
Awhile back, Apple introduced the new review system that allowed only the buyers to review an app in an effort to get the situation under control. While the issue of stupid and foolish reviews was solved (for the most part) the original reviews remained for public viewing. This was unfair to developers that released applications before the review system was amended.
It appears that Apple is retroactively going back and making the AppStore reviews section an even playing field for everyone. All the reviews made on applications by people that never bought the app are being deleted from the US AppStore. All the junk ratings and spam...
