It's been a trying time for Zodiac fans lately. With clearance-style Zodiac prices in the UK, deep discounts in the US, Fathammer quietly removing the Zodiac from the list of compatible devices for some of its upcoming games, and Tapwave keeping their mouths closed through it all, the future was looking dim. But...at last...Tapwave has provided some answers.
The following is some information, straight from Tapwave's Senior VP of Marketing, Byron Connell. While many of his comments raise more questions than they answer, they do provide some reassurance to Zodiac fans that Tapwave's future is more positive than recent events might have us believe.
******************************
Here is what we are focused on:
Tapwave is starting to transition from offering Tapwave branded retail products to developing new co-branded products for OEM partners (i.e., other leading consumer electronic companies). These partners will be introducing future multimedia products based on both the Zodiac technology platform and Tapwave's next generation technologies. This approach allows us to leverage other company's brands, distribution, marketing funds and geographic expertise. Some of these partner companies are interested in delivering a next generation gaming experience, but most (with the arrival of Sony PSP) are really focused on working with us to create other mobile solutions – e.g., rich multimedia, navigation and communication. Of course, you can see this business transition starting to happen in UK as we speak. This was planned. To facilitate the move to a new OEM business model, Tapwave is also working with Dixons and other UK resellers to manage this transition. Customers are likely to find some good deals in the process and will of course continue to receive great support, etc.
Developing and closing new business and partnership opportunities. You should hear more about this in the coming weeks since we have recently closed a multi-product business partnership with a leading Chinese company.
Developing our next generation multimedia platform.
Raising additional funds to help drive future programs – yes, unfortunately this is an ongoing part of being a small privately funded company. Wish I had Sony or Nokia’s budget
Consolidating our e-commerce software download to a single vendor. Note: Unfortunately customers in UK and Singapore will experience some store access issues during this transition which has just begun.
With that said, there are also some great new developments for Zodiac…
A new Zodiac API is back under development for hardware MPEG4 decode (to help developers take better advantage of the ATI chip for improved video performance). This one has been on my personal wish list for a long time as well.
The new software driver for the Sandisk WIFI+256MB card is very close to release. The beta is currently available for download on our site. The card itself will also be made available from our online store shortly.
New web browser from Nvarra (Nweb) recently completed/enhanced for Zodiac and being readied for release. Very nice application.
Mapopolis GPS solution available and entire US Map collection on a single SD card. Works with both Bluetooth and SDIO based GPS receivers.
The high score reporting/tournament zone project is back in development. We will likely roll out a basic version in beta form first.
A new Bluetooth enabled version of Megabowling.is close to completion (much better than IR based, etc.)
Mototrax MTX (the 1st X-forge 2.0 title) is now GM quality and is still in line for release after final doc, testing and Activision sign off. Other Tapwave branded titles are on hold (not canceled) pending OEM interest.
Based on last week’s discussions with Fathammer, we are also expecting a couple more 3D X-Forge titles from them in the next couple months.
MessagEase for quick and easy input now runs on Zodiac. You can download the Zodiac version from http://www.exideas.com/ME/Downloads.html
Several other great new 3rd party apps/games that you are probably already aware of…etc.

Tapwave, the makers of the PalmOS-based Zodiac handheld gaming PDA, have announced—essentially—that the platform is on its way out. The company still stands and will be working to do co-branded products with other companies, whatever that entails. You should probably just go read their statement yourselves. It almost sounds like they’ll be helping people build PSP titles, to me.
But the Zodiac, for all its shortcomings (namely, not being the PSP), is a pretty neat device, especially if you just want a Palm PDA that can occasionally play games.

The handheld gaming market may soon become less crowded. According to Gamasutra, Tapwave has said it will cease production of branded Zodiac products. The Tapwave Zodiac is a Palm OS-based gaming platform, known for its fairly robust media capabilities...and slim game offerings.
Evidently, Tapwave plans to continue operations as the producer of cobranded OEM (original equipment manufacturer) products. There's a strong indication this means the Tapwave Zodiac will soon be discontinued in favor of a similar product released under a new name and manufactured by a different company. Calls to Tapwave's US publicity contact were not returned, and e-mails were bounced back.
The Zodiac first hit store shelves in June of 2004, almost a year after Tapwave began taking preorders for the device on its Web site. The original price of $300 for the 32MB Zodiac 1 and $399 for the 128MB Zodiac 2 were recently reduced to $270 and $350 respectively. However, the device failed to grab a foothold in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
The Zodiac has seen some growth in its game offerings, thanks to some new games from Sega, Atari, and Backbone Entertainment However, many are reissues of old titles, or ports of games from other platforms, such as Electronic Arts' Madden 2005 and Sega's Altered Beast.
Last October, the Zodiac entered the European market, but it's failed to make headway there as well.

Graphics are scaled for the screen now. Made a few optimizations for speed -- it feels faster to me (not the gameplay, but the framerate). Almost forgot to mention that you should be able to put the files on any SD card now.

Handheld console manufacturer Tapwave looks set to cease manufacturing its Zodiac range of devices, with the company revealing that it intends to move its business model away from retail products and towards partnerships with other manufacturers.
Tapwave's devices are based on the Palm OS platform and boast impressive multimedia and PDA capabilities as well as an ATI graphics chip to drive an admittedly fairly meagre line-up of game software.
Now, in the face of competition from Nintendo's DS and Sony's PlayStation Portable, Tapwave intends to "transition from offering Tapwave branded retail products to developing new co-branded products for OEM partners," according to senior VP of marketing Byron Connell.
"These partners will be introducing future multimedia products based on both the Zodiac technology platform and Tapwave's next generation technologies," he explained to dedicated Tapwave website Tapland.
Tapwave launched its devices in mid-2004 in North America, supported by a small catalogue of games from publishers such as Electronic Arts, Atari and Sega, including versions of Duke Nukem 3D, Doom II, Spy Hunter and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
This was followed with a launch in Europe last October, but so far the device has failed to make significant headway in the market in either territory.

As the battle of the next-gen consoles gets underway, the battle of the handhelds continues - and Gizmondo was given a boost today with the announcement that Electronic Arts will publish three top-selling titles for the platform.
Only two of these have been confirmed so far, however - FIFA Football 2005 and snowboarding sim SSX 3.
"We are seeing a dynamic swing towards mobile gaming," said Nancy Smith, executive VP of publishing for EA North America.
"These titles are a superb opportunity for us to work with Gizmondo in delivering an exhilarating EA gaming experience on this exciting new format."
Tiger Telematics head Carl Freer added: "Each of these titles represents another step forward for us in delivering mainstream games content.
"These are among the strongest game franchises in the world, and a co-publishing relationship with EA has been a priority goal for us from the outset."
Tiger says this is just the start of a series of announcements to be made at E3, where the Gizmondo stand will occupy 4500 square feet of floor space. More than 15 new titles will be revealed once the event gets underway.

Two years after it raised eyebrows by launching its N-Gage mobile console at an extravagantly upbeat E3 gala, Finnish mobile giant Nokia has become much more circumspect about forays into the games industry--but that doesn't mean it's about to prove the naysayers right. In fact, Nokia announced several initiatives to bolster the struggling platform at its press conference today at E3.
First and foremost, Nokia guaranteed unequivocal support for the N-Gage QD game deck through the end of 2006. This promise from Nokia, combined with the announcement of special accessories intended for "loyal N-Gage owners," may act to quell the fears of jittery N-Gagers who were anticipating the console's imminent collapse.
In a recent telephone interview, Nokia's Games Business Unit director Gerard Wiener elaborated on what to expect. New accessories will include a redesigned stereo headset, an expansion pack that will allow the N-Gage QD to hold an extra game card, and a limited-edition QD with a silver faceplate.
And while he pledged continued solidarity with the QD device, Wiener also outlined Nokia's plan to spread the N-Gage platform across a broader range of Nokia products.
Because the N-Gage is essentially a specialized smart phone belonging to Nokia's Series 60 product family, it's relatively simple for the company to tweak some of these designs to accept and play N-Gage games, at least in theory.
"We expect to make about 25 million Series 60 smart phones in 2005 worldwide," explained Wiener. "We're creating a platform for everyone. This will reach a range of phones, not just a single N-Gage device."
According to Wiener, Nokia will be building N-Gage compatibility into its mobile phones on a going-forward basis, so present owners of Series 60 phones will be out of luck--there won't be an upgrade. Additionally, the N-Gage game lineup won't work for all Series 60 phones, due to the obvious issue of button layouts and ergonomics. It remains to be seen if Nokia intends to produce more mobile phones along the N-Gage's gamepad design.
Finally, Nokia announced eight new N-Gage games--including sequels to Pathway to Glory and X-Men Legends--as well as new functionality for N-Gage Arena.
The next generation of N-Gage Arena will support clans and user-created tournaments and will include an improved game invite system over Arena's embedded instant-messenger application.

We know it’s been rough not knowing exactly when Tiger Telematics was going to introduce their Gizmondo portable game console over here, but they’ve finally confirmed a US release date: August 11th. Their ridiculously over-the-top booth here at E3 notwithstanding, there hasn’t exactly been an overwhelming amount of buzz about the Gizmondo since it debuted in the UK a couple of months back. They did score commitments from both EA and Ubisoft to release games for the Gizmondo, and they’re touting the console’s GPS capabilities, which’ll let you do some interesting stuff when it comes to location based gaming, and its multimedia functions, but it’s hard to imagine anyone, short of Microsoft themselves (or maybe Apple or Samsung), coming out with a portable console that could grab the spotlight away from the twin juggernauts of the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable.

Following the poor performance of gaming-dedicated mobile phone the N-Gage, Nokia has unveiled plans to release a new generation of smartphones as part of a strategy to secure a firmer foothold in the market.
The new gaming-enabled smartphones will give consumers the option to save games to memory card, download wirelessly or access them via a PC connection.
Nokia is also planning to release a new development tool kit which will standardise games so that they are compatible with all types of handset, with no need for rewriting.
The gaming-enabled smartphones will go on sale in the first half of next year. Nokia expects to sell 25 million current-gen smartphones by the end of 2005.
Nokia's earlier venture into the mobile gaming market - the N-Gage, a phone that doubles as a games console - was not a hit with consumers, despite a redesign in the form of the N-Gage QD and subsequent relaunch.
But the Finnish firm says it will continue to offer support for the platform, with new games, new accessories and a limited-edition silver version on the way.

<BLOCKQUOTE>We have been contacted by the BAZIX Company on our forums and have been informed of a new project they are about to launch. Here is a small tidbit from their press release.
GRONINGEN, May 22nd, 2005 - The Dutch company Bazix is currently developing "MSXPLAYer", an advanced emulator with which popular games from the 1980s and 1990s can be enjoyed once again on Symbian Series 60 mobile phones. MSX games are very small, making it possible to install hundreds of games on a standard mobile phone with a capacity of 32MB. MSXPLAYer furthermore distinguishes itself from ordinary JAVA games thanks to its excellent gameplay, speed and the originality of the MSX games. Where the currently available JAVA games usually are cheaply produced remakes, MSXPLAYer brings a wide range of professionally developed, high quality games to the mobile phones.
This will be very nice for people with the Series 60 phones and N-Gage owners. Here is some links of interest for this news item.
The sheets of the presentation of Sander Zuidema during MSX World 2005 can be dowloaded at http://www.bazix.nl/documents/MSXworld2005.ppt
More information and several screenshots of MSXPLAYer for mobile phones can be found at http://www.bazix.nl/msxplayer60.html

Just days after Gizmondo launched in continental Europe, Tiger Telematics has confirmed that the handheld will go on sale in North America this summer, with a release planned for August 11.
Tiger is currently showing off the console at E3, and says it has met with an enthusiastic response from potential business partners.
"The sales meetings being conducted at the show have been tremendously productive and there is a genuine excitement regarding the product from everyone we've met with," said global sales VP Mike Morgan.
"We will be announcing our retail and distribution partners through the trade media over the next few weeks."
Tiger Telematics chairman Carl Freer added: "The partnerships we've developed with major games publishers, married with internally developed content, satellite navigation products and Smart Adds, will present a unique portfolio that will guarantee the Gizmondo will stand out when we launch in the US on 11th August.
"The North American market is hugely important and we will make every necessary resource available to ensure a successful launch."
The Gizmondo launched in France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Nordic territories on May 19, two months after hitting UK stores. It's described as a "multi-entertainment handheld" which features onboard GPS and enables users to watch movies, listen to music, take photos and send messages as well as play games. A total of 89 games are lined up to launch for the platform by the end of this year.
