Apple announced today the release dates for the iPad Mini, 4th-Gen iPad, and iPhone 5 in China. The Wi-Fi versions of the iPad Mini and iPad are expected on December 7, while the iPhone 5 is coming on December 14.
China has become one of Apple biggest markets, so the company has worked hard to get its products past the red tape that stymies many manufacturers.
"Our conversations during our meetings and casual consumer interactions during our China trips tell us that the iPad Mini will take off like wildfire in China," Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White wrote in a research report obtained by Mercury News. "The smaller form factor and lower price point, we believe Apple will be able to sell the iPad mini in meaningful volumes."
The 4G LTE versions of the iPad Mini and iPad were not mentioned, but carriers China Telecom and China Unicom will be selling the Wi-Fi device, so a further announcement could be forthcoming. China Mobile will be not stock the new iPhone at all, according to a report by The Next Web.

The HTC Windows Phone 8S was announced as a lower-end alternative to its bigger brother, the flagship Windows Phone 8X, but the company has remained relatively quiet about it since. While we're still awaiting official details on pricing and availability across the globe, HTC has filled us in on one crucial nugget of information: it won't be coming to the United States. While we've been suspicious that this might be the case, we had been holding out hope that it might have at least some amount of reach in the US market. Essentially, HTC is focusing all of its stateside efforts on the 8X, its signature device. With that said, we'll still likely see the 8S show up as an unlocked and unsubsidized smartphone on various etailers, so Windows Phone enthusiasts with a penchant for bright colors will want to keep their eyes peeled. Now that we know more about the markets that won't be graced by the presence of the 8S, all we need now is a confirmation on when we can expect it elsewhere. Stay tuned past the break for HTC's official statement.

Developer kits for the Ouya were given a ship date of December 28th today, alongside news that the system's software development kit ("ODK") will be available that same day. In case it wasn't already clear how small the Android-powered console is, the folks at Ouya included the picture you see above to further illustrate that point -- the thing is reallysmall. Ouya expects the dev kits to get into backers' hands "within a couple days" of the 28th. Final units are still intended to ship some time in March 2013, though no final date is available just yet.
How different are these dev units from the final run, though? Not that different, we'd guess, considering the company's continued promise that "every Ouya will be a dev console." The only hint given of their difference is a note in today's update calling them, "pretty special." Beyond just getting a jump on game development with the Ouya in mind, dev unit buyers will also be the first to try out Jelly Bean gaming. Of course, if you're a dev unit-level backer and you'd like to share your thoughts with us, we're all ears.

Sega hasn't exactly had the smoothest of times while trying to launch its old-school (and very popular) Jet Set Radio title on novel platforms. Today, however, the Dreamcast maker announced that its fan-favorite game is now rolling to both iOS and Android. Jet Set Radio will, naturally, be compatible with Cupertino's iPhone, iPod and iPad as well as the majority of handsets and slates that are running some flavor of Google's OS (2.2 and up), with Sega pricing the game at about five bucks -- which, needless to say, is a pretty small amount to pay to virtually skate your way around Tokyo and, you know, graffiti mostly anything you deem worthy enough to tag. Eager to take it for a swirl? Then all you've got to do is hit either of the source links below to get started with the download.

Apple claims that the company"wasn't aware during trial that the foreman of the jury that issued a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung Electronics Co. was involved in a lawsuit with his former employer, Seagate Technology Inc. 'Samsung asked Apple to disclose when it first learned about the litigation between the jury foreman, Velvin Hogan, and Seagate. Apple responded in a filing yesterday in federal court in San Jose, California. Samsung is attempting to get the Aug. 24 verdict thrown out based on claims the trial was tainted by the foreman's failure during jury selection to tell U.S. District Judge Lucy H. Koh, who presided over the case, that he filed for bankruptcy in 1993 and was sued by Seagate."

The Washington Post reports that Apple has finally unveiled their new version of iTunes, overhauling its look and feel and integrating it more closely with the company's iCloud Internet- storage service with one of the biggest upgrades Apple has made to the program with 400 million potential users since its debut more than a decade ago. The new design of iTunes moves away from the spreadsheet format that Apple has featured since its debut and adds more art and information about musicians, movies and television shows. It also adds recommendation features so users can find new material. According to David Pogue of the NY Times Apple has fixed some of the dumber design elements that have always plagued iTunes. 'For years, the store was represented only as one item in the left-side list, lost among less important entries like Radio and Podcasts. Now a single button in the upper-right corner switches between iTunes's two personalities: Store (meaning Apple's stuff) and Library (meaning your stuff).' Unfortunately, Apple hasn't fixed the Search box. As before, you can't specify in advance what you're looking for: an app, a song, a TV show, a book. Whatever you type into the Search box finds everything that matches, and you can't filter it until after you search. It feels like a two-step process when one should do. 'Improvements in visual navigation and a more logical arrangement of tools are good, but for me the biggest positive within iTunes 11 remains its vastly improved performance on all three Macs I've tested it on, including a relatively ancient five-year-old MacBook,' writes Jonny Evans.

Back in 1982, the video game hardware industry was an untamed, Wild West-esque madhouse of creativity and gimmicks, both of which often traveled hand in hand. One such example of pre-crash insanity was the Vectrex, a game console with a built-in CRT vector-graphics monitor and transparent screen overlays that faux-colorized the display.
Production of the Vectrex ceased in 1984, but mobile developer Rantmedia Games has resurrected the wonky thing as Vectrex Regeneration, an emulation platform for iOS devices. Available for free on the App Store, the app includes the original Vectrex's built-in game Minestorm, as well as indie games that have been developed for the platform since its demise.
Access to 18 further titles from the Vectrex's catalogue, as well as iCade support, can be purchased for $6.99. Eventually, all 29 games ever released for the system will be added as in-app purchases. Unfortunately, the app does notinclude flimsy plastic screen covers like the original did, but we guess you can't have everything.

A village in the Indian state of Bihar has banned women from using mobile phones and imposed heavy fines for those who do.
According to NDTV, elders of the village of Sunderbadi in the staunchly Islamic district of Kishanganj issued a number of edicts in order to implement social reforms.
These include banning women from using mobile phones or from bathing by the roadside. The fine for an unmarried woman caught using a mobile phone is 10,000 rupees, while a married woman faces a fine of 2,000 rupees. The fine for bathing by the roadside has not been publicised.
“Mobile phone is the cause of all evils in our society, including increasing love affairs and the incidents of elopement,” said Mohammad Manzoor Alam, who presided over the decisions.

A report from iFixit has given the new ultra-thin iMac a score of three out of ten for repairs.
iFixit, which specialises in helping people repair their own devices, performed a teardown of the new iMac, calling it ‘an exercise in disappointment’ after finding heavy use of adhesive, an LCD screen that’s fused to the glass screen, and ‘user replaceable RAM’ that requires the screen to be unglued and the logic board removed.
Although the new iMac’s won some praise for the fact that the RAM, hard drive and CPU can all be replaced, iFixit noted that: “Most replaceable components (like the RAM) are buried behind the logic board, meaning you'll have to take apart most of the iMac just to gain access to them.”

The sense attachment felt by many towards their mobile phone these days is becoming a major contributing factor in the break-up of many relationships, a new study by the University of Maryland has found.
According to the survey, young adults can spend up to seven hours each day using their phone, with some experiencing feeling of withdrawal when separated from their mobile.
Dr James Roberts, of Baylor's Hankamer School of Business, in Texas, said that “instant messaging” addiction was driven by “materialism and impulsiveness.” He noted: "Mobile phones are a part of our consumer culture. They are not just a consumer tool, but are used as a status symbol. They're also eroding our personal relationships."
Previous studies have found that young adults aged 18-29 send an average of 109.5 texts every day, or around 3,200 messages a month. They receive an additional 113 texts and check their phones 60 times in a typical day, with students spend around seven hours per day interacting with information and communication technology.
It was also reported recently that half of Brits would rather check their tablet than talk to their partner, while a study from the University of Worcester revealed that smartphone users can suffer from hallucinations, stress and obsessions from their mobile, imagining phantom vibrations when they don't receive any activity such as calls or texts.

With the launch of BlackBerry 10 edging ever closer, the company has rebranded its BlackBerry App World to, simply, BlackBerry World.
The BlackBerry App World web store will become the BlackBerry World web store prior to the BB10 launch event on January 30, 2013, while the BlackBerry World name change will be rolled out to all storefronts as of mid-January 2013.
BlackBerry PlayBook tablet customers will see the updated store name in a future build, while video and music content will still be only available via the separate Music Store and Video Store applications on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
Customers on BlackBerry OS smartphones (OS 5, 6, 7 and 7.1) will also see the updated name and continue to benefit from new titles as they are developed for the BlackBerry OS platform. However the video and music content will not be available.
Developers from across the globe have been creating new apps and games for BlackBerry 10, while other teams at RIM have been meeting with content partners, music labels, networks, and studios to provide a comprehensive catalogue of music and video in one storefront with one login on the user’s BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
This is not the first rebranding story to make the headlines this year. In August it was revealed that Microsoft was in the process of rebranding the Windows Phone Marketplace, while Android Market was rebranded as Google Play in March.

Meanwhile, Apple secured the second place in October with a 17.8 per cent share that rose from 16.3 per cent in July. This was to the expense of LG, which only managed the third spot with a 17.6 per cent share, falling from 18.4 per cent.
121.3m Americans owned smartphones during the three-month period and Google's Android was the leader in terms of smartphone OS, rising from 52.2 per cent to 53.6 per cent, while iOS and BlackBerry secured the second and third place positions, respectively.
SMS was the most common form of content usage as 75.9 per cent of Americans sent texts, while 54.5 per cent downloaded apps and 52.7 per cent used browsed the mobile web.

New console on track for first post-Kickstarter launch
Ouya will meet its first major post-Kickstarter deadline, with developer kits officially scheduled to start shipping before the end of the month.
The team behind Ouya has announced kits for the Android-based console will begin shipping on December 28th. Ouya's SDK should also be available online around the same time.
The date keeps with the December target promised as part of the effort's Kickstarter campaign.
The company adds that its has a team specifically working on the console's UI as well.
“We’ve also had a team focused on the user interface. This involves optimising Android Jelly Bean to play games on a big screen and spending time understanding the best ways gamers can search for and discover new games,” the official blog post read.

This iPhone 4s is charging without a dock connector because [Tanv28] .
The hack is not for the faint of heart. But if you’ve got a precision soldering iron and a stead hand we bet you can pull it off. It starts with disassembly to get at the cable that connects the circuit board to the dock connector. [Tanv28] solders fine enameled wire to pins 16, 23, 25, and 27. The other end of these wires are soldered to the guts from a Powermat inductive charging system. After the connections are made there’s not enough room under the back cover of the phone for this added bulk. But laminating a second plastic frame onto the assembly will correct for the 1mm difference in thickness. The clip after the break walks through the entire process.
You can see that [Tanv28] also built the charging station into a piece of furniture. We just saw a post last week that used this technique to add Powermat hardware to a shelf.

The second official beta of XBMC 12 "Frodo" is ready for testing, and if you've been waiting to move up from the nightlies you finally can -- as long as it meets a few requirements, like supporting Neon processor code (most HTC and Samsung devices do). There's a compatibility list of devices known to work, although there are known issues with Android 4.2 that won't be addressed until Beta 3. Also improved in this version is support for the Xbox 360 controller, no matter what platform you're using it on, along with some audio fixes and other tweaks. Hit the source link for the full list of updates or just go straight to the download page if your media device can't wait.

Sony Mobile’s latest addition to its Xperia smartphone range will be making its way into consumers’ hands in Q1 2013.
Although Sony hasn’t announced pricing yet, it has cited the Xperia E as an ‘affordable addition’ to the range, with Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia marketing at Sony, calling it “perfect for those seeking affordable access to the quality and functionality more traditionally associated with high-end Android smartphones.”
Coming in black, white and pink, the Xperia E will be available in both single and dual SIM versions.
Launching on Android 4.1 jelly Bean, the smartphone comes equipped with a built-in ‘WALKMAN’ application that includes xLOUD audio technology, 3D surround sound and a manual equaliser.
The Xperia E has been designed to help consumers stay on top of cost and power consumption. The data usage application monitors how much is being spent and the extended standby mode increases the standby time up to four times.
When the screen has been in sleep mode for a few minutes, Wi-Fi and data traffic will be disabled and most applications will be inactive to save battery life. However, calling and messaging will continue to work as normal. Once you touch the screen to wake the device up from standby, all functions are back to normal.

Nokia has today introduced the Lumia 620, its most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone to date.
The tech giant says this new phone ‘offers a more fun, youthful appeal, and compact design’. Nokia is attempting to inject a bit of fun into its new device by offering up seven different exchangeable shells.
"We continue to execute on our strategy to reach new audiences and new markets," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Nokia Smart Devices. "With its innovative design, the latest Windows Phone 8 software and signature experiences from Nokia, like Nokia lenses, Nokia Maps and Nokia Music, the Nokia Lumia 620 is a highly competitive smartphone at this price point."
In terms of specs, this Windows Phone 8 smartphone features a 3.8-inch 800x480 display, 5MP autofocus main camera, 512MB RAM, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 1Ghz dual-core CPU.
"People can do more of the things they love when they choose a mobile device that has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor," said Enrico Salvatori, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Europe. "The Snapdragon S4 Plus processor is the heart of the Nokia Lumia 620, making it possible to multi-task, stream in HD and share content at super-fast speeds."
Estimated at $249, the Lumia 620 will begin selling in January 2013 in Asia, followed closely by Europe and the Middle East.

A recently published patent from the US firm has sparked rumours that its next iPhone device may feature wireless charging technology.
However, Apple is not the first to become associated with the technology.
Nokia's Lumina 920 smartphone already incorporates wireless charging, instead allowing users to charge the device through the use of a wireless charging pad.
Apple's technology differs from its competitors due to its contact-free function, meaning that devices are charged without the need for a charging pad, slate or any other additional device.
The patent filed by the firm covers various embodiments of a wirelessly powered local computer environment", which will reportedly use magnetic resonance to wirelessly charge devices up to one meter away.
Interestingly, the patent was originally filed in November 2010 but published just a few days ago.
Its release has lead to speculation amongst industry watchers that wireless charging technology could spark another patent war amongst Apple and its competitors, much like the firm's on-going battle with Samsung over its smartphone devices.

Tech analyses 12 speech features, such as pitch and volume, to determine whether you're feeling happy or disgusted.
Engineers at the University of Rochester are working on a computer programme that can read human feelings through speech, which is verified across 12 features like volume and pitch, to determine whether someone is angry, happy, sad or neutral.
Actors took part in the experiment and simply recited the date, with Wendi Heinzelman, professor of electrical and computer engineering, saying: "It really doesn't matter what they say, it's how they're saying it that we're interested in."
Accuracy currently sits at around 81 per cent, and the research has already been used to develop an app, which displays a happy or sad face after hearing the user's voice.
Heinzelman, continued: "The research is still in its early days, but it is easy to envision a more complex app that could use this technology for everything from adjusting the colors displayed on your mobile to playing music fitting to how you're feeling after recording your voice."

Green Throttle gets backing for mobile app/tv dashboard, controllers, and more
Green Throttle, a start-up that believes mobile phones are the console of the future, has raised $6 million in Series A funding.
While this may not be the first company to make this argument, Green Throttle takes things a bit more literally.
With a mobile app that acts as a TB dashboard, a few adapters, and a set of controlers, the Santa Clara start-up plans to use mobile phones as consoles.
The Ouya is similar in approach, but Green Throttle is going a good deal further. By removing the console entirely from the equation, users can play the same game on their TV and on the move.
“We believe a large percentage of consumers will use their phones or tablets to play games on a TV, and mobile-to-TV gaming could quickly grow to surpass the console market,” said Green Throttle CEO and founder Charles Huang.

jrepin points out a discussion with Richard Stallman in which he talks about how the Free Software movement is faring in light of companies that have been successful in the long term with very different principles, like Microsoft and Apple. Stallman had this to say:"I would say the free software movement has gone about half the distance it has to travel. We managed to make a mass community but we still have a long way to go to liberate computer users. Those companies are very powerful. They are cleverly finding new ways to take control over users. ... The most widely used non-free programs have malicious features – and I’m talking about specific, known malicious features. ... There are three kinds: those that spy on the user, those that restrict the user, and back doors. Windows has all three. Microsoft can install software changes without asking permission. Flash Player has malicious features, as do most mobile phones. Digital handcuffs are the most common malicious features. They restrict what you can do with the data in your own computer. Apple certainly has the digital handcuffs that are the tightest in history. The i-things, well, people found two spy features and Apple says it removed them and there might be more. When people don’t know about this issue they choose based on immediate convenience and nothing else. And therefore they can be herded into giving up their freedom by a combination of convenient features, pressure from institutions and the network effect."

Google Android's dominance of the smartphone space has been reinforced by a new IDC study that places its market-share at 68.3 percent, well ahead of iOS at 18.8 percent. But which version of Android is most preferred by users? A new set of graphs on the Android Developers Website offers the answer to that question: 'Gingerbread,' or Android versions 2.3 through 2.3.7, dominates with 50.8 percent of the Android pie. 'Ice Cream Sandwich,' or versions 4.0.3 through 4.0.4, is second with 27.5 percent, with the latest 'Jelly Bean' build at 6.7 percent. As demonstrated by that graph on the Android Developers Website, there are a lot of devices running a lot of different versions of Android out there in the ecosystem, all with different capabilities. In turn, that could make it difficult for Google to deliver 'the latest and greatest' to any customer that wants it, and potentially irritates those customers who buy a smartphone (particularly a high-end one) expecting regular upgrades."Here's how Slashdot readers using Android break down: 31.0% Jelly Bean, 31.5% Ice Cream Sandwich, 0.7% Honeycomb, 22.8% Gingerbread, 4.3% Froyo, 1.1% Eclair, 0.05% Donut, 0.02% Cupcake, 8.5% unknown. Looks like you folks are ahead of the curve. iOS breaks down like this: 67% iOS 6, 28.6% iOS 5, 3.2% iOS 4, 0.5% iOS 3, 0.7% unknown. (These numbers include more than just phones, of course.) Overall, our iOS traffic (8.74%) is higher than our Android traffic (6.75%). Windows Phone and BlackBerry both clock in at about 0.2%.

[Adam Outler] shows us . He does this by installing BusyBox. The binary is copied to the device using the Android Developer Bridge. He then opens an ADB shell, adds execution permissions to the binary, and runs it. BusyBox calls itself the Swiss Army Knife of Embedded Linux. It provides a set of very common tools which you’ll find useful in your tinkering. The one that [Adam] shows off in his video is the vi editor, but the basics that make a shell work are all there like: ls, mkdir, grep, dmesg, mount… you get the point.
So what are you going to do with your unrooted device now that you have these commands at your disposal? That’s really for you to figure out. [Adam] continues his demonstration by installing a package that does require root access. It’s BotBrew Basil, which adds apt-get and a few more complex packages. He then uses vi to write a C++ Hello World program, then compiles it and runs it. So if you’re looking to do some development on your phone this is one way.

$60 million finds its way into 25 developers' pockets in 20 days
According to independent analyst firm Canalys, 25 developers pocketed 50 percent of US app revenue during the first 20 days of November 2012. The total revenue shared between those 25 developers amounted to $60 million in paid downloads and in-app purchases. The numbers are based on Canalys' daily App Interrogator surveys of the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Of the lucky 25, only one - Pandora Radio - was not from a game developer. The list includes most of the larger mobile game developers, including Zynga, Electronic Arts, Disney, Kabam, Rovio, Glu, and Gameloft.
“Part of the story here is that successful game developers almost invariably have multiple titles generating revenue,” said Canalys vice president and principal analyst Chris Jones. “Zynga, for example, had 15 titles in the list of top 300 grossing iPhone apps on average in Apple's App Store every day, and nine titles in the equivalent list in the Google Play store. Even with its singular focus on its Angry Birds franchise, Rovio has multiple game variants in the list. With the holiday season now underway, we expect to see many of these top game developers employing discounts and special offers, taking advantage of their ability to cross-promote within their app portfolios.”
During the first 20 days of November, games averaged 145 of the top 300 paid apps on the App Store and 116 of the top 300 on Google Play. When it came to free apps, the numbers dropped down to an average of 94 apps out of the top 300 on the App Store and 110 out of the top 300 on Google Play.
“Discoverability is a particular issue in the Apple App Store and in Google Play given the huge inventories they boast,” said Canalys senior analyst Tim Shepherd. “With top game developers' content so prevalent in the stores, it can be hard for other good quality apps to get the attention they deserve. Developers of other kinds of apps need to consider how to promote them. Depending on the type of app, they should consider how best they can exploit social media and social recommendations, tactical sales promotions and discounts, branding tie-ups and targeted in-app advertising.”

Dropbox updated its app for Android today, bringing the oft-used cloud storage / sharing service to version 2.2.2. Included is the usual assortment of unspecified bug fixes we're accustomed to seeing in such point upgrades, but there is one major improvement of note: the ability to manage files and folders. Sure, this may not seem like a revolutionary move on the company's part, but for photo-obsessed users that have the service set to auto-upload, the change is welcome, indeed. It's live in the Google Play store now, so head on over to the source to get that download started.

Samsung has only just started seeding Jelly Bean to someGalaxy S III owners, but it may already be delivering a second round to others. SamMobile claims that Android 4.1.2 is starting to reach those using the international 3G model, with hinted-at multi-window support still intact. The Galaxy Note II's gallery app, Smart Rotation and other apps or (at times subtle) features may come with the extra 0.0.1's worth of code. Don't expect to see a notice on your particular phone or in Kies just yet, however. As we write, only Poland is believed to be in line for an immediate upgrade -- our UK team isn't seeing it, which makes the rollout difficult to confirm unless it spreads. Let us know if you're seeing the split-view multitasking on your Galaxy S III in Krakow.

It's not exactly often that our neighbors down south get any handset exclusives to call their own, but according to Guerrero Móvil's Facebook page, there's a Mexico-only Lumia 505 well on its way to Telcel's mobile lineup. Aside from touting an 8-megapixel camera, though, the regional carrier doesn't really reveal any other details -- however, rumor has it this Nokia handset will be running Redmond's en-route Widows Phone 7.8 and come sporting a 3.5 or 4-inch WVGA display with an 800MHz, single-core processor, 256MB RAM and 4GB of built-in storage. Of course, it's still a tad bit early to say these specs are set in stone, but the social network post does note that the WP slab will soon be official, and thus it's only a matter of time before we find out what the Lumia 505 really has to offer.

Windows Phone 8 is a roaring success! That is if you ask the platform's Senior Director, Todd Brix, who tweeted today that developer revenues and downloads have doubled since its launch in November. While this sounds all good, what does it really mean? Back in June, the former Windows Phone Marketplace surpassed 100,000 published apps. To further gauge the platform's progress, Nokia recently announced that the Windows Phone Store now has over 120,000 apps, with 46 of the top 50 iOS and Android applications being available for WP8.
While today's vague declaration of success didn't reveal any specific numbers, a 20 percent software increase in under six months is definitely something to smile about. As much as we'd like to slap Microsoft a high-five, we'll have to save our jubilation until we get a little something more concrete -- hopefully a set of official statistics will Surface sooner than later.

Former Battlefield executive producer Ben Cousins has unveiled The Drowning, a free-to-play post-apocalyptic first-person shooter for iOS devices due out early next year. The Drowning is in development at Scattered Entertainment, the new name for Ngmoco Sweden, the Stockholm-based studio owned by Japanese publisher DeNA. It runs on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini and the iPod Touch 5th generation, with an Android version planned “further down the line”.The story begins in 2011, when a mysterious new oil starts leaking from deep sea drills across the globe. The oil creeps towards populated areas, and those who encounter it disappear only to return a week later as monsters hell-bent on dragging people into the oil. You play as one of the survivors of this catastrophe. The game is set in a fictional series of islands off the coast of Seattle. You're a scavenger who is cornered on a jetty in a harbour. You escape on a boat, but crash on these islands, losing all your equipment. You then explore and build up your equipment while uncovering the story behind the catastrophe. In an interview with Eurogamer, Cousins said the story will last about ten hours or so, but it will take hundreds of hours to unlock and level up all of the weapons. “I would liken it to a single-player RPG where you complete the story but then continue to level up and increase your skills,” Cousins said. “It's not quite as complex as that, but that's the analogy I'm making.”There is no deathmatch or capture the flag multiplayer modes because research showed gamers who liked those modes on PC and console were not ready to play them on mobile. There is, though, a social multiplayer mode that is asynchronous. Players won't play together but will cooperate to complete objectives, with unique content unlocked from them.Of course, first-person games on touch-screen devices have been criticised for their control schemes, with the dreaded virtual joystick often singled out as being particularly cumbersome.

It appears the Apple rumour mill is starting up again following the leak of images, which are reportedly of the next iPhone device.
Whilst the US firm only recently released the iPhone 5, it certainly fits the company's profile to release a slightly upgraded device just months after.
Apple surprised - and annoyed - a number of users earlier this year with the release of the iPad 4, which came just six months after the firm released the third generation device, initially known as "The New iPad".
French website Nowhereelse leaked the images, which show off the largely unchanged innards of the rumoured 5S device.
Whilst there has yet to be any form of response to the information from Apple, the device is already being referred to as the iPhone 5S, keeping with the firm's tradition of naming its products.

Due to Apple's anti-3rd-party browser stance, and Windows RT's IE-only advantage on the 'Desktop,' Android is the only mobile platform where browser competition is thriving. The results are pretty surprising, with the long-time mobile browsers like Dolphin, Maxthon, Sleipnir, and the stock Android browser coming out ahead of desktop favorites like Firefox, Opera, and even Chrome. Dolphin, thanks to its new Jetpack HTML5 engine, soars ahead of the competition.

Apple has had to take security more seriously when a larger user base and the cloud have opened up greater risks. Thanks to a just-discovered hire, we now know 1 Infinite Loop isn't messing around. While many of us were fixated on new iPhones in September, the company was quietly recruiting Kristin Paget as a Core OS Security Researcher. She's had stints at eBay and Google, but she's best-known for helping Microsoft while she was a security researcher at IOActive: not only did her team burst the bubble of Windows Vista engineers who thought their code was airtight, the group ultimately delayed the entire OS release to get security up to snuff. Given that Vista avoided most of the malware chaos that affected Windows XP even after Service Pack 2, Paget bodes well for the future protection of Apple's platforms. Just don't expect her to talk shop when she's a security expert at a firm that tends toreally, really value its secrecy.

You've waited long enough, haven't you? The low-cost PMP leader has kept the mantra alive with its GamePad, which is now shipping to those interested for Ł129.99. Put simply, it's a widescreen gaming handheld that runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), replete with a 1.6GHz dual-core processor and Mali 400mp quad-core GPU. There's a 1,024 x 600 resolution touchpanel, physical control buttons and analog sticks, and the whole thing checks in at just 0.3-inches thick. Unfortunately, there's no word on battery life, but even the optimist in us can't predict a number that'd be worthy of boasting about. Hit up the source link to make plans for purchase, or click past the break for the full presser.

Following the announcement by Apple CEO Tim Cook that the firm plans to move some manufacturing to the US, the move has been labelled as just a publicity stunt.
During an interview on American news network NBC, Cook revealed that one of the company's existing Mac lines would begin to be manufactured within the United States from next year.
However, the CEO did not reveal which of the firm's product lines would have its manufacturing process moved to the states, staying close to Apple's well-known profile of complete secrecy.
Following the news, many have been quick to counter the comments, labelling them as nothing more than a PR stunt by the company.
Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman of corporate watchdog SumOfUs, said: "Apple has a track record of announcing changes in its supply chain as PR stunts. For years, Apple’s been making and breaking promises when it comes to ethical sourcing and how it treats its workers."
"This spring Apple’s biggest supplier published a far-reaching report that promised to make massive changes in how Apple products are made over the course of this year -- and yet we’ve seen no virtually improvement in workers’ lives."
These comments likely refer to the well-publicised troubles that occurred at a Foxconn factory in China earlier this year, where over 2,000 workers were involved in a riot, which left 40 people injured.
The firm has come under heavy fire for the working conditions of its factories across the country, with employees citing bad living environments, which have caused a number of suicides.
“Apple has spent $650 million just on advertising for the iPhone alone since it launched. They’re talking about spending less than 20% of that on this shift. They’re talking about moving 1/10th of 1 per cent of their global production costs," added Kauffman.

The Canadian smartphone maker is on the verge of releasing its latest Blackberry 10 operating system, and is hoping to entice users to make the switch,
RIM has somewhat fallen behind its competitors. Both Apple and Samsung have recently released new additions to their smartphone ranges, whilst RIM hasn't offered a new device in close to 18 months.
However, in order to aid its new operating system, the firm has launched an incentive program designed to influence business customers to upgrade to the new OS.
Blackberry 10 Ready Program offers RIM's larger business customers perks such as online training and webcasts, along with free upgrades of licences to the new BB10 OS.
"Starting in January 2013 through to December 31, 2013, Research In Motion (RIM) will be offering customers who purchase new BlackBerry 10 smartphones, the ability to trade up their existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server licenses on a one for one basis for free," reads the press release sent out by the firm.
"The new license trade up will allow customers to secure and manage their BlackBerry 10 smartphones."
RIM has been relatively quite for a while now, but things are expected to heat up in the New Year, starting with the roll out of BB10 on January 30th.

Five years after the iPhone originally launched in 2007, T-Mobile will finally start carrying it. It might not be as buzz-worthy as when Verizon finally got the iPhone back in 2011, but it's going to be a pretty big deal for T-Mobile subscribers next year, when the carrier starts selling Apple products. ... T-Mobile USA CEO John Legere said while speaking at the Deutsche Telekom conference Thursday that it will carry the iPhone and will offer it in a different way. 'What was missing? A certain number of customers wouldn't come to the store if we didn't have the iPhone,' Legere said. 'We worked very, very hard for a deal that made sense for us.'

Malicious apps have emerged as perhaps the most serious threat to mobile devices at the moment, and the major players, such as Apple and Google, have tried several different methods of preventing them from getting into their app stores and into the hands of users. Now, Google is taking one more step with the launch of a new service called the Private Channel for Google Apps, which gives enterprises and other organizations the ability to create private app stores and control the apps their users can download. Private Channel is essentially a way for organizations to stand up their own miniature app stores inside of Google Play--the main app store for Android devices--and publish apps to it. That gives these organizations the ability to point their users directly to the apps they want users to download for their Android devices. The new service will include some of the security features built into Google Play, most notably the anti-malware system and the ability to authenticate users

When Sony and Box came together last year to offer Xperia owners a tantalizing deal of 50GB of free storage for life, the promotion was only set to run for a year. Now that shopping season is upon us once more, however, the holiday spirit must've moved them to extend the partnership for yet another year -- that, or Sony needs any edge it can to move thoseXperia devices to consumer hands. Just as with the prior promo, Xperia and Sony tablet users can snag 50 gigs of cloud storage completely gratis just by signing up or tapping into existing Box accounts on their devices before December 31st 2013. However, do note that the offer doesn't extend to theXperia X10 mini, the X10 mini pro and anything that has firmware older than Android 2.1. Now that Sony has this going for two years straight, maybe they should extend this to alifetime scenario, or as long as Box sticks around to offer up that sweet storage in the sky.

Rogers is currently in a full-court press to get us using Microsoft-branded devices, and it just made that clear through steep, across-the-board sales on everything Windows Phone 8. Nokia's Lumia 920 has dropped from $100 to $50; the yet-to-ship Samsung ATIV S has already dropped from $150 to a more tempting $80 for early adopters. The sweetest of deals may be for the HTC Windows Phone 8X, which has dipped to $30 for a 16GB model and a solitary penny for the 8GB version. For all the cuts, Rogers is careful to warn that they're part of a "limited time offer" and might not last beyond the weekend. We're delving deeper for an official statement on the drops, although the ATIV S cut may be to counter a leaked (and as yet unconfirmed) Bell deal at the same price. Whatever the cause, we'll gladly take steep discounts on cutting-edge hardware.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition rolled onto the App Store today, with the remastered BioWare RPG now available on iPad for $9.99. Trent Oster, head of developer Beamdog, revealed the current version is limited to iOS 6.0, although iOS 5.1 support is in the works.
Beamdog released Enhanced Edition for PC last week, with the Mac and Android versions still to come. While BG:EE comes in $10 cheaper on iPad than on PC, certain new inclusions such as Neera and Dorn II Karn are only available as in-app purchases.
The game's multiplayer is in beta at launch, but Beamdog said cross-platform multiplayer is coming to the game, meaning iPad rangers will be able to fight alongside PC druids, Mac paladins, and Android thieves. Other combinations will also probably work.

First time accepted submitter Shifuimam writes"I downloaded a DOSBox port for Android recently to get back into all the games of my childhood. Turns out that the only free distribution available hasn't been updated in nearly two years, so I looked for alternatives. There are two on Google Play — DOSBox Turbo and "DOSBot". Both charge a fee — DOSBox Turbo is $3.99; DOSBot is $0.99. The developer of DOSBot says on his Google Play entry that he will not release the source code of his application because it's not GPL, even though it's derived from source released under GPL v2 — this is definitely a violation of the license. The developer of DOSBox Turbo is refusing to release the source for his application unless you pay the $3.99 to "buy" a license of it. The same developer explicitly states that the "small" fee (although one might argue that $3.99 is pretty expensive for an OSS Android app) is to cover the cost of development. Unless I'm misreading the text of GPL v2, a fee can only be charged to cover the cost of the distribution of a program or derived work, not the cost of development. And, of course, it doesn't cost the developer anything for someone to log in to Google Play and download their app. In fact, from what I can tell, there's a one-time $25 fee to register for Google Checkout, after which releasing apps is free. Where do you draw the line on this? What do you do in this kind of situation?"

I started my wp8 development by playing around with Cocos2d-x port for wp8. I also used this start by participating to the forum.nokia wiki-competition with my article about Porting Cocos2d-x Games for Windows Phone 8. You can see the port running on the video below. I had really good time with cocos2-x, and I think that I might even make my own game based on this framework. It’s really easy to use, and you can port the games created with it so easily to iOS, and for Android as well.

I have fixed the games I submitted to the BlackBerry Game-Port-A-Thon. I had many bugs reported by the AppWorld team that occurred only on the BlackBerry DevAlpha device, but not on the simulator. It seems that the DevAlpha is very important tool, if you want to develop for the upcoming BB10 phones.
[h=4]FreeJeweled[/h]This one was the trickiest. I don’t own a DevAlpha, and yet I developed for it. The game seemed to work really well on the simulator, but it didn’t work as well on the real device. Luckily I got some images from the BlackBerry AppWorld testing team to help me with my development.
FreeJeweled running on DevAlpha device. ScreenShot provided by BlackBerry AppWorld team
FreeJeweled running on simulator. In here the menu bar is perfect
[h=4][/h]As you can see the game worked really well on the simulator, and badly on the real device. At first I thought that my problem was that the size of the menu bar buttons is based on the jewel size from the game, and those values came from c++ engine. I thought that maybe there’s some very strange timing issues or something… and that’s causing the qml side ending up with some strange default values. My first attempt was hardcoding the button sizes, but I still got rejected from AppWorld, and they told me that it still looks just as bad.
The FreeJeweled is using custom fonts which are packaged into the application itself. My second guess was that the fonts are not working in the same way on the real device as they are on the simulator. This time I had help from a friend with BlackBerry DevAlpha to run some tests for me, and it turns out that the problem was with the font behavior. I blindly changed font sizes on my code, and sent a package for him to test, and after couple of packages we finally got it right.
Below you can see the working version of the game running on the DevAlpha, and running on Simulator.
Working version of FreeJeweled running on DevAlpha
Working version of FreeJeweled running on simulator
It seems that I really need the DevAlpha device if I want to do quality ports, since things like this tend to happen sometimes.
[h=4]Blubbles[/h]Blubbles was running really smoothly on my simulator, but it didn’t work on the DevAlpha. I used Qt’s setGeometry function to set the QWidget into the right place on the screen. It worked really well on the simulator, and it left only small black borders on both sides of the application, but it didn’t work at all on the real device. I strongly recommend not to use the setGeometry function in your apps (if you don’t have DevAlpha), since it is working differently on the device, and the on simulator.

3 |
//This didn't work out at all
setGeometry(40,0,1200,720);
|
Blubbels running on DevAlpha, image provided by the AppWorld testing
My solution was to run the App in full screen with:
1
2 |
MainWindow *mw = new MainWindow;
mw->showFullScreen();
|
I also commented out the set Geometry function since it didn’t work. After that I also decided to run the game in portrait mode instead of landscape, and I also modifies the code a bit, so I could get the screen full of bubbles. Now it’s running really well on the simulator, and on the real device too. See the image
Fixed version of Blubbles, screen full of bubbles
After this I got one more rejection from the AppWorld. It turns out that I left a link to the original Blubbles project at source forge, and I had to remove it, since it was against the BlackBerry AppWorld policies. They categorised the sourceforge as “Another app store”, and told me to remove the link. It’s really not an issue for me, since they still agreed that I could keep the link to my github page where I host the source code. I’m fine with the “github only” policy, since the source code is still easy to find for anyone who’s interested about it.
[h=4]qmlSokoban[/h]For this game I got a very valid point from the AppWorld testes that the man is impossible the move. Actually it was possible to move the man, but you just had to click the next block of the screen where the man is. Dragging event’s with a finger moved only the world around the man(not the man itself). I guess that this happens all the time with the real device and touchscreen. The controls are easy only with the mouse, but they don’t work that well with the touchscreen.
I decided to add a DPAD to control the man. I still wanted to keep the sokoban controls “clean” in the way that no one will mess up their game by an accidental move. Therefore I configured the buttons to only control the character from “mouseClick’s”, and not from drag events. The character moves now only with one “tap” to the DPAD. The character will not move two screens even if you keep the finger pressed to the button(this to prevent accidental moves). The AppWorld testers also agreed that this was a good fix, and I got the game passed to the store.
Here’s a snippet how to create “tapping” DPAD buttons for your game. You only need one image component, with proper anchors.

Police in the Australian sate of Victoria are telling people to avoid iOS 6 maps after a number of users have found themselves directed off the beaten track.
Multiple motorists intending to visit the town of Mildura have been directed to a national park. One man was stranded for 24 hours in temperatures of up to 46 degrees, and three others have been rescued after following Apple’s mapping system.
The police have conducted tests on iOS 6 maps and have confirmed that it lists the town 70km away from its actual location, and sends drivers to the middle of Murray Sunset National Park.
“Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, making this a potentially life threatening issue,” reads a statement on the Victoria Police News website.
“Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.”
The police have contacted Apple about the issue and advise using other forms of mapping.

PlayScape developer to expand service to iPhone, Windows Mobile and Facebook
Israel mobile gaming outfit MoMinis has raised $6 million in a second round of funding.
As reported by Venturebeat, the Tel Aviv-based company received the investment from Gemini Israel Ventures, having previously raised $4.9m from BRM Group and Mitsui Ventures in April last year.
Last year MoMinis released Android game portal PlayScape, which allows users to play up to 50 games through one free app, and has since garnered more than 35 million users, with 5.5 million monthly active players. The firm also said that there were now 100 titles in development for the portal in 18 countries.
MoMinis chef exec Itzik Frid said the funding would be used to scale up the company’s efforts and find new ways to retain users and increase discoverability, as well as expanding PlayScape to iPhone, Windows Mobile and Facebook.
“We are very excited about how our relationship with Gemini will play into our new stage of growth,” said Frid.

Market share of expensive devices will shrink from 85 per cent last year to 33 per cent.
New research from Informa Telecoms & Media claims the smartphone market will see a huge shift in pricing over the next five years, as more than half of devices sold will be priced under $150.
Consumers often complain the likes of the iPhone are too dear, which leaves the likes of Nokia and ZTE to lead emerging markets in the Middle East and Asia with low-end devices, which are set to become the norm.
Comparatively, the high end market accounted for 85 per cent of smartphone sales in 2011, but will fall to 33 per cent in 2017 as buyers avoid paying above $250 for their phones.
The average price of a smartphone was at $188 in 2011 and it will continue to decline to $152, driven by a balancing act between the high-end phones sold in developed markets and entry-level devices in emerging ones.
The price drop will force OEMs to compete fiercely with each other, though some vendors will struggle to maintain profitability as a result.
Malik Saadi, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media, said: "As the market develops, the supply chain will increasingly be divided between two camps – the innovators who will continue to introduce new features and high-performance components to the market place and followers who will take this innovation to the mass market in later years.
"In any case, these players will have to align their pricing strategy with market demand if they want to survive. The new environment will make it hard for all vendors to achieve a balance between generating scale and maintaining decent margins."

With the Kickstarted Ouya now very much on the way, you might think that the Android Console market was all sewn up.
Apparently not.
Seattle based start-up (and CAPS LOCK nightmare) eSfere Entertainment claims to have designed “a unique video game console that will allow people to play their favourite Android games at high quality from the very first minute”.
The machine will apparently have “strong technical specifications” and ship with a wireless touchpad controller. The idea behind this is that it will be instantly compatible with games designed for Android smartphones – something that could still prove an issue for Ouya’s traditional joypad.
“Developers will not need to worry about re-adapting their games specifically for this machine,” the official release reads. “It will keep the touch controls inherent to mobile gaming, but the action will jump from 4", 7" or 10" devices to large screen displays.”
More details about the machine will be released tomorrow.

Know what's better than the gossamer promise of an early 2013 release date for Windows Phone 7.8? Any and all little tidbits that elucidate just what it could herald for legions ofbruised Mango users. According to an alleged Nokia customer feedback survey obtained by WMPoweruser, that OS upgrade may bring with it a few additional, albeit minor enhancements outside of the (already confirmed) expanded start screen, like options for enhanced lock screen security, a Bing image of the day wallpaper, plus 20 new color themes. On the Nokia side of things, it appears Lumia owners will get to enjoy a few software perks as well -- namely, that of the gif-making Cinemagraph app and an expanded set of camera lenses. In all, this rumored feature set isn't exactly the most robust, but it'ssomething. We've reached out to Nokia for comment, but so far the company hasn't returned our request. In the meantime, consider this slice of news as solid as WP 7.8's release date.

The eSfere video game console has made its way onto crowd-funding site Idiegogo and intends to bring Android apps to your living room TV.
“Mobile apps have transformed the electronic gaming ecosystem. Each week thousands of new titles, with remarkable graphics and audio, are available for smartphones and tablets for low prices or even free,” reads eSfere’s Indiegogo page.
“Why should we settle for playing them on a 4 inch, 7 inch or 10 inch screen device? Why can’t we enjoy our favourite games on our large screen TV at high quality without having to resort to home video game consoles and their high priced games?”
The console boasts a Tegra3 quad core processor or above, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal flash storage, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, HDMI connection for up to 1080p HD, multitouch gamepad controller with integrated accelerometer and gyroscope, and Android 4.1 operating system.
The gamepad controller is designed to keep the touch surface experience of a mobile device, but those who have longed for physical buttons on their tablet or smartphone will be pleased to hear that the eSfere controller comes with a set of detachable silicone buttons and d-pads to easily adapt to your favourite games.
This console is potentially good news for both gamers and developers. Users can pay a relatively small amount for an app-port of an AAA game and play it on a big TV, and developers don’t need to make special adaptations, just continue making Android games as they normally would.
The eSfere needs to raise $390,000 by January 21st. Check out the eSfere Indiegogo page to find out more.

A survey by Morgan Stanley has found that nearly half of Americans are interested in buying an Apple branded TV, even though the product is not even close to being made.
According to the research, 11 per cent of respondents stated that they would be ‘extremely interested’ in buying such a device, which apparently translates to 13 million unit sales in the US along. A further 36 per cent said they were ‘somewhat interested’, which would boost that sales total up to 56 million units.
46 per cent of the respondents even said they’d be willing to pay over $1000 for an Apple branded TV, while ten per cent said they would pay over $2000.
All this is despite the fact that the proposed Apple television set is still in pre-design phase. Various design ideas are reportedly being tested by the US company in conjunction with its Asian manufacturing partners, Sharp and Foxconn.
However some commentators, most notably former Apple executive Jean-Louis Gassee, are sceptical about the product ever making it to launch, noting that even if Apple TV sales were to grow ten-fold they would still only account for two per cent of Apple’s overall income.

Google’s chief executive, Eric Schmidt has claimed that Google has widened its lead over Apple and likened the difference to the Apple-Microsoft relationship of the 1990’s.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Schmidt said that Android had taken 72 per cent of the smart phone market share in Q3, compared to Apple’s 14 per cent.
“This is a huge platform change; this is of the scale of 20 years ago – Microsoft versus Apple. We’re winning that war pretty clearly now,” commented Schmidt.

Map app gets worldwide rollout in the Apple App Store.
iPhone user the world over can now get their hands on the Google Maps app, after the popular service was rolled out worldwide in the Apple App Store.
Designed from the ground up, the app is built to combine the qualities of Google Maps with an interface that aims to make finding your destination easier than ever. The app shows more of the vector-based map on screen and provides both 2D and 3D views.
To complete the Google Maps ecosystem, we’re also releasing the Google Maps SDK for iOS, and a simple URL scheme to help developers use Google Maps when building their beautiful and innovative apps.
At the app’s core is Gogle’s constantly improving map of the world, which includes detailed information for more than 80 million businesses and points of interest. To get to your destination, users receive voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation, along with live traffic conditions and public transport information.
The new Google Maps app is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch (4th gen) iOS 5.1 and higher, in more than 40 countries and 29 languages, including Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Networks were successful in distributing mobile entertainment to their customers though their own stores several years ago, but we're living in a different world today.
Native stores built into operating systems, like Android's Google Play, account for 89 per cent of the 81 billion downloaded smartphone and tablet apps, according to ABI Research, and that's only likely to grow as the trend of operator billing picks up.
Indeed, BlackBerry and Google have both recently integrated Bango's mobile payments solution into their respective app stores to allow shoppers to pay for their content on monthly bills instead of making an immediate payment.
Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst, said: "The current status quo is based on storefronts that the operating system vendors provide as part of the OS experience, and there is no evidence that this would change in the future.
"A year ago it still looked like that, for example, mobile operators could find a viable business case in the curation of Android apps, but that opportunity evaporated once Google got its storefront act together. Today, it makes sense for operators to distribute apps only under special circumstances, such as the ones that we're seeing in China.
"Running a user-friendly app distribution channel is expensive. Besides the adequate hosting and billing systems it takes quite a lot of human labor, since successful app discovery requires some form of editorial approach. The opportunity for smaller storefronts built around selected categories is therefore limited."
There are exceptions to the rule though, demonstrated with B2B apps and selected consumer categories that bigger stores don't want to be associated with, such as adult. Mikandi is a prime example; a mobile porn store that has built a business out of the distribution of explicit content.

Barely a fortnight after Apple unleashed iTunes 11 into the wild, the software's first notable update is making its way into OS X's Software Update. While only bumping it to v11.0.1, the refresh adds the ability to easily weed out duplicate items in one's iTunes library -- a feature that was mysteriously removed in the original move from iTunes 10 to iTunes 11. We're also told that it solves an issue where "purchases in iCloud may not appear in one's library if iTunes Match is turned on," makes the program as a whole more responsive when sifting through a vast music library, and solves a quirk where the AirPlay button may not "appear as expected." For those eager enough, a simple refresh of Software Update should have you on your way to a little newness.

The appearance of new Nokia firmware on NaviFirm is already enough to pique the interest of owners jonesing for an update, and this time there's especially strong reasons to get fired up: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrades for both the Lumia 510and 800 have appeared on the servers. While their presence doesn't represent an official rollout, it supports notions that Nokia is edging closer to a deployment and gives those who live dangerously a chance to try 7.8 for themselves. We can't guarantee that phones will survive any unofficial transplants, but we'd love to hear from risk-takers who find something truly new in Microsoft's not-quite-8 release.

Keeping map data relevant's a full-time job -- just ask Nokia,Google and, yes, even Apple. Which is why Microsoft may be gearing up to offload some of that heavy lifting to users in theaugmented reality guise of mobile gaming. Or at least that's one possible future outlined by a recently surfaced patent application. The USPTO doc, filed back in June of 2011, clearly lays out a crowdsourced "data collection system" whereby users sent on virtual missions to specific real-world targets would aid in the gathering of up-to-date geo-location data. With its thriving Xbox gaming arm and reinvigorated inroads into the mobile space, it wouldn't be much of a stretch for Microsoft to leverage a bit of corporate synergy to make its own mapping service more accurate, or simply license the data. Whatever the case may be, it's all up in legal limbo for the time being. So, for now, you'll have to content yourselves with AR missions of the Ingress kind.

Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition for select Android devices following a week-long delay.
Priced at Ł3.74, the game features native high-resolution graphics, updated character models and lighting effects, new firing and targeting options, plus a customisable control layout. The title was originally expected to launch last Thursday alongside the iOS version.
"Apologies to all of our Android-using fans for the slight delay," Rockstar said today.
"If you already purchased Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition while it was briefly available on Google Play last week, you won't need to re-purchase it - just download the latest update from Google Play (if your phone is set to automatically download updates then you're already all set to go)."
Rockstar founder Sam Houser said of the game: "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is everything we loved about the 80's packed into a sprawling open world action game. We're thrilled to let mobile and tablet players experience everything Vice City has to offer."
We called the 2002 PS2 version of the game phenomenal in our original Grand Theft Auto Vice City review.

Ars Technica reports that Google's map application for iOS, however popular it might be with users, raises red flags with European regulators, who maintain that it by default does not sufficiently safeguard user privacy as required by EU privacy rules. Ars quotes Marit Hansen of Germany's Independent Centre for Privacy Protection on why: "Hansen's main gripe is that Google's use of 'anonymous' is misleading. 'All available information points to having linkable identifiers per user," she told Computerworld. Hansen added this would allow Google to track several location entries, thus leading to her assumption that Google's 'anonymous location data' would be considered 'personal data' under the European law."

The firm has issued an apology to UK customers over the stock shortages of its latest smartphone device, the Nexus 4.
Whilst the device launched back in October, customers interested in the device have struggled to find available stock, with the limited number of devices at launch selling out it just minutes.
Some customers have been left waiting months for their Nexus 4 to arrive.
In light of the delays, Google UK and Ireland's MD Dan Cobley has published an open letter to customers experiencing delays.
Within a post on his Google+ page, Cobley says: "I know that what you are going through is unacceptable and we are all working through the nights and weekends to resolve this issue."
"I realise that the people who ordered the Nexus 4 so early are among our most committed and loyal users and we are doing all we can to put things right."
As for the reasons behind the delay, Cobley hints in the post that LG, who makes the device, may be to blame.
"Supplies from the manufacturer are scarce and erratic, and our communication has been flawed. I can offer an unreserved apology for our service and communication failures in this process," says Cobley.
However, the MD reassures customers that orders are being processed and can expect to receive them before Christmas.

A new report from DisplaySearch indicates that Apple is aiming to reach total iPad shipments of 100 million by next year.
Apple’s new iPad was initially intended to replace the iPad 2, but on-going strong sales have led to panel manufacturers downscaling new iPad panel production while maintaining production of iPad 2 panels. The report suggests Samsung, LG Display, Sharp and Innolux will ship 23 million iPad 2 XGA panels, and 47 million new iPad QXGA panels.
“Panels for iPads are known to be hard to make, not only because of the high resolution and low power consumption requirements, but also because the wide viewing angle and high colour saturation specifications require additional photomask steps in the manufacturing process,” said DisplaySearch’s David Hsieh on the company’s blog.
“In 2013, it is likely that Apple will adjust its product portfolio to meet the strong demand for the iPad mini. We believe that Apple is targeting total iPad shipments of 100 million in 2013, half accounted for by the iPad mini, and 40 million new iPad and 10 million iPad 2, as production continues at least until the middle of 2013.”
Apple came in for criticism earlier this year following the launch of the iPad mini, as many deemed its $329 price as too expensive for a 7-inch tablet PC.
However, despite such criticisms, the iPad Mini was recently voted one of the hottest consumer products of 2012 in Japan, while Apple is asking panel makers to ship over 12 million in Q4 2012 to meet such high demand.

Apple's device breaks three-day record in burgeoning market
Apple's iPhone 5 sold a record 2 million units in its first 3 days on sale in China.
The figure is a clear demonstration of the growing importance of the Chinese market to consumer electronics companies: the iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in 3 days when it launched in 9 countries and territories in September, yet the device sold almost half of that number in China alone.
"Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible," said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement. “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”
In addition to China, Apple is rolling out the iPhone 5 to a further 50 countries this month, including rapidly growing markets like Brazil and Russia.

The latest gadget always makes its way to retailers’ top ten Christmas lists – and this year tablets and e-readers are fighting it out for the top position.
The launch of Windows 8 in October brought with it a host of new tablets and laptops. This, coupled with the first 7-inch tablet from Apple, and Samsung’s much sought-after Android tablets, makes for an overwhelming number of devices for consumers to choose between.
“Tablet sales go from strength to strength and we predict that they will be a must-have gadget for Christmas,” commented Johnathan Marsh, head of buying for electricals and home technology, John Lewis. “There is a plethora of models now available that offer different operating systems, price points and screen sizes, including the new 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and 7.9-inch iPad mini that are highly portable.”
E-readers should do well too. Currys and PC World include Amazon’s Kindle e-reader, along with the new Kindle Fire, in its list of top ten tech gifts.
Argos, on the other hand, has dubbed Kindle rival the Nook Glow the number one gift for Christmas, while John Lewis believes the Nook Simple Touch will be the e-reader of choice for its customers.
But it’s not all just gadgets for grown- ups. Mobile devices have also made their way onto children’s wish lists.
The LeapPad2 and VTech’s Innotab both feature in Hamleys, Argos and The Entertainer’s top ten kids’ toys for Christmas.
Logically, tablet accessories should make good add-on sales this season.

A new Ofcom report reveals that the UK has taken over Japan as the world leader in mobile use.
Consumers are downloading more data on their mobiles and tablets than any other major nation, with 16 per cent of all website traffic in the UK coming from mobile devices.
Internet shopping is also more popular in the UK than any other country, reports Ofcom. UK consumers have now broken the Ł1,000-a-year spend barrier on internet shopping.

Samsung has stated that it will withdraw from its patent battles with Apple that cover infringement issues in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Halting its injunction requests was apparently "in the interest of protecting consumer choice " and comes soon after a recent update to the Apple-Samsung court battle in the US where the judge ruled that it wouldn't be banning the sale of over 20 Samsung devices. The company added: "We strongly believe it is better when companies compete fairly in the marketplace, rather than in court."
Update: Just in case you thought this saga would eventually die and be forgotten, Foss Patents has taken a slightly less optimistic perspective. He points out that although Samsung says it's dropping all its European injunction requests, such that it won't seek to ban the sale of Apple products, the company doesn't say that it'll stop pushing for financial compensation through the courts. Meanwhile, Bloomberg has updated its own article to reflect this.

The folks at Mobile-review have been dropping hints that they have an unannounced Sony handset in their possession, and now they've released a gabble of specs and images to prove it. Sony's "Yuga C6603" bears all the potential hallmarks of a flagship, sporting a 5-inch screen running at full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080), although some of that real estate is occupied by on-screen buttons. The display is loaded with an impressive 440 ppi, just like HTC's Droid DNA, and Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine has been employed for color reproduction. Under that screen we find a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU with Adreno 320 graphics, and 2 gigs of RAM for Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean to take advantage of. In terms of connectivity, it's got USB host and micro-HDMI ports, Bluetooth 4.0, standard WiFi, NFC and a Qualcomm modem of the LTE variety. A 12-megapixel shooter can be found on the back (perhaps using the same HDR sensor as the Oppo Find 5), a microSD slot supporting up to 128GB cards on the side, and a non-removable battery of unknown capacity hiding within. That's pretty much it for now -- but judging by how final this hardware looks, there's a chance we might see more of it atCES.

End users are spending an increasing amount of time on mobile devices, which naturally brings up a number of security concerns. Like on desktops, one of these concerns is the risk of running malware and exploits. But ironically, some of the most promising developments for protecting these devices come from the tension between jailbreakers and OS developers.
Android is a more open mobile OS that allows users malware problem on Android, even the vetting that is done isn’t enough. This potential for profit drain has brought about technology changes that have made it harder to write exploits and mobile malware.
Google relies on third parties’ app markets to vet code and the company has provided an app scanner for Android to determine if files are malicious. It has also prevented rooted devices from accessing popular and developers a lot of choices for customisation. But it’s not 100 per cent open, and many phone carriers lock devices further. iOS is a walled garden, with Apple acting as the guardian of what a user can do to their device. Many users dislike these restrictions, and some groups work to find exploits that allow people to ‘root’ or ‘jailbreak’ their machines to bypass them.
SECURITY ISSUES
The ability to install homebrewed apps costs networks and software vendors money, making them understandably opposed to jailbreaking. There are also security issues with running poorly vetted code. Judging by the rapidly growing services and functionality. Apple is already more stringent about approving apps, but it has also locked down its OS architecture to make running exploits more difficult.
These changes make devices less susceptible to running exploits, which in turn prevents jailbreaking but also helps prevent malware as a side effect. Regulated systems not only protect the user, they are also in place to protect resellers and vendors as well. When code becomes more trustworthy and transparent, devices become less susceptible to the outside intruders. The channel is right to be apprehensive about jailbreaking, especially if the support falls to them, but in the end, this tension is actually helping to make mobile OSs more secure.

With just a week until Christmas, Asda has begun sales of iTunes gift cards, which makes it the first retailer in the UK to do so.
The cards can be purchased online, with the supermarket currently selling the Ł25 for Ł20 to encourage purchases.
Ł15, Ł25, Ł50, and Ł100 vouchers are available, while buyers will receive codes within 60 minutes of ordering.
Chris Wade, online category manager, Asda, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer these cards to customers in the UK. Apple’s iTunes stores are a treasure trove of multimedia entertainment, from eBooks to films and music. For those who are stuck on what to buy, or just don’t have time to hit the shops, these cards are an ideal gift."

It doesn't look to bring with it any major changes, but Apple has just released its latest iOS update, which takes things up to version 6.0.2. According to the company, this one primarily addresses a bug that "could impact WiFi." An issue that, incidentally, has been at the center of a number of previousiOS updates. You should be able to find the update now or in the near future in either iTunes or Software Update on your iOS device.
Update: As MacStories notes, this particular update appears to only be for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

Apple has today released iOS 6.0.2, a minor update aimed at fixing Wi-Fi issues on both the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini, as well as a number of other minor bugs.
While the update is aimed at remedying a few minor bugs, the over-the-air download is currently proving to be difficult task for some users. Reports have recently surfaced on Twitter, along with several other places on the web, from users claiming that they are having problems connecting to Apple’s update servers over the air from iOS devices.
iPhone 4S, fourth generation iPad, iPad Mini and iPhone 5 users have said that the update can’t be found on a range of devices.
However, the more ‘old skool’ among you, may wish to install the update by plugging your mobile into your computer and downloading it via iTunes; a method that has currently yielded no problems.

Two-thirds of mobile phones sold in the region are powered by Google's OS.
New research from Informa Telecoms & Media says that the reach of Android continues to surge, particularly in China, which accounts for a third of all Google OS-powered devices sold in 2012.
In fact, the little green robot has such a stronghold in the region that two-thirds of mobile phones sold in the country run on Android, making it the largest market in the world. The region is also noted as the fastest-growing smartphone market, experiencing an 85 per cent year-on-year growth rate.
The US bagged an 11 per cent share of global sales, which makes the country the second-largest Android market, while at least half of all mobile phones sold in the country throughout 2013 will use the platform. The firm also notes that the share could grow even further if Apple doesn't improve its devices and 'ageing iOS', with iPhone sales slipping from 35.5m in 2012 to 34m in 2013.
Comparatively, Apple's iPhone only accounts for five per cent of sales in China, though two million units of iPhone 5 were sold during its debut weekend.
Malik Saadi, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media, said: "Despite the economic downturn, the global smartphone market is enjoying healthy growth and consumers are actually spending more to acquire more technologically-advanced devices.
"It is estimated that around 786 million smartphone devices were sold in 2012 (including the devices powered by non-certified variants of Android that are proliferating in China), which is 45% more than the total number of smartphones sold in 2011.
"Looking forward, Android is expected to continue gaining market share globally and, by 2015, one in every two handsets sold worldwide will be powered by it. However, according to Informa Telecoms & Media, the market share of this platform could potentially peak – or even decline – after 2016 owing to a more aggressive penetration of the alternative OSs, most notably Windows Phone."

As Android takes a firm hold in the shifting smartphone market, the Intel Developer Blog looks at the ways to keep those devices secure.
According to a recent IDC report, Google held a 52.5 per cent share of smartphone subscribers in the US in the third quarter. The same report shows that, in the third quarter, Android sales represented a staggering 75 per cent of the smartphone market. Those are some outstanding growth statistics.
With such momentum, a lot of people are switching to their first Android device now. Entire groups of people, as well as individuals, have begun to make the switch. Apparently, the walls of Facebook HQ are decorated with ‘switch today’ posters, and the company is offering its employees Android smartphones for business use - quite a change of tune from its early days.
With estimates that Android will be running on 63.8 per cent of handsets worldwide by 2016, the step-up from its biggest competitors may not quite hit the spot in a market that seems to be embracing the industry shift. And, as more devices hit the market, I’ll bet this statistic is only going to become more likely.
I’ll admit it; I’m an Android fan. But as people switch to a new operating system, they face new security risks they might not be aware of. Developers should share the responsibility to educate people about these risks, so that they can use the platform, and the apps for it, with confidence.
A few simple tips can go a long way. One easy way to reduce the risk of infecting your device is to only download apps from trustworthy distributors, so developers should encourage customers to download their apps through mainstream channels, rather than their relatively unknown company websites.
Developers should also take care with the permissions they request. Alarm bells will be ringing if users notice their new torch app needs access to all of their contacts, and developers should encourage users to be cautious if they want to build trust in the platform. Users should be in control of what data is used, and how it is used, and building granular privacy controls into your apps will help to win trust.
Reviews will be important for determining which apps are trustworthy, so developers should encourage users to leave reviews. The reviews don’t have to talk about security, but their very existence will demonstrate that the app is proven by other users and nobody has reported adverse effects. People won’t want to be the first to try an unknown app.
When building an app yourself, make sure you’re taking every opportunity to make it as inaccessible to malware attacks as possible. After all, the aforementioned protective pointers won’t make a difference to consumers if we, as developers, are not taking the necessary steps to ensure full security from the word go.
While security is always important, we should keep it in perspective. The risk of malware on Android devices isn’t as high as the risk your desktop computer faces. And while the apps in the Google Play store don’t need official approval before they can be downloaded, the Android community actively keeps an eye on the store in an effort to remove apps that may be harmful to your device.
As Android wins ever more market share, it might come under stronger attack from malware developers, but developers can help to protect their users, and their own revenue base, by educating the market now.
Which security tips work for you? Leave me a comment below, or discuss with others on Intel’s Android developer community forum.

Ouya's game lineup is growing in leaps and bounds in the run up to next March's consumer launch of the Kickstarter-funded Android-powered game console, and developers are just about to start receiving pre-launch dev units. 10 lucky new developers just got added to the list of those receiving dev units, and even better: all 10 are getting the unit for free (an $800 value), after having been chosen by the company across 10 days of giveaways on Twitter. Another Kickstarter success story, Fist of Awesome, was the first game picked, and the contest closed out this morning with Starbound winning the final giveaway. Developers should receive their consoles in the coming weeks alongside dev console pre-orders -- the main, $99 console arrives in March 2013, and should you be able to wait, every one of them will also serve as development kits. The full list of new titles is just below -- and yes, one of the gamesdoes feature uppercutting bears as a main mechanic. Stop worrying.

Apple is reportedly looking to fast-track production of a new version of the iPad Mini.
According to Digital Trends, a research note from RBC Capital Markets analyst, Doug Freedman has been circulated that states: “iPad Mini Gen-2: Apple’s gen-2 iPad Mini is getting pulled-in, and is likely to have several new suppliers, the TXN gaining content.”
Freedman is currently visiting a number of chip manufacturers in China and the TXN mentioned in the memo is Texas Instruments, which has supplied Apple with components in the past.
Although a new iPad Mini has been expected since the firsrt model shipped without a retina display, the fast turn-around is unlikely to please Apple’s loyal customer-base. Many Apple users were displeased by the release of the original Mini so soon after the launch of the iPad 4.

Robert Peckham predicts the New Year will bring some major management changes at Apple...
When Steve Jobs sadly passed away last year, many industry commentators – including me – wondered how long it would be before the cracks started to show without someone like Jobs at the helm.
Well it’s taken over a year, but the cracks are now starting to appear.
Firstly, Apple very publicly sacked John Browett, the ex-Dixons CEO who only joined Apple six months ago as head of their global retail operations. Apparently he failed to grasp that Apple didn’t employ him to streamline and cut costs on their retail operations, and he wasn’t focused on improving the customer experience enough. Apple doesn’t like negative publicity, and with Browett they received lots of it.
But more significantly, the man who many believed would have been Steve Jobs’ own choice as his successor, Scott Forstall, is leaving the company. Unquestionably viewed as Steve's apprentice, Scott Forstall was hired straight from university by Jobs to work at NeXT, he then moved with him to Apple to head up various software projects.
Forstall is rumoured to be leaving because of the iOS maps software issue (another source of significant negative publicity for Apple) but in reality too many people in the executive team didn’t like his overbearing management style, which was very Steve Jobs-like, and some even refused to work with him. Apple’s share price took a significant dive at the news of his departure.
Tim Cook is certainly not the man to head Apple in the long-term, and everyone who is watching Apple agrees with this. After Scott Forstall’s departure, the name to watch is now Bob Mansfield, who actually retired from Apple earlier this year, but returned to head up Apple’s Technologies division after the news that Scott Forstall was leaving.
Bob oversees all the new technologies that drive Apple products forward, including all the real engineering innovations that Jonny Ive’s design team insist on.
As I write this, Apple’s share price is dropping significantly, and I reckon the New Year will see some major management changes announced at the company.

Patent may be hit following review request from Samsung.
The US Patent and Trademark Office may be about to invalidate Apple’s ‘pinch-to-zoom’ patent, following a patent review at Samsung’s request.
Earlier this year, the patent played a crucial part in Apple's US$1.05 billion damages award against Samsung.
However, yesterday (Wednesday, December 19th) saw the US Ptent Office send its initial findings to Apple, which are reported to state that there was prior art for the ‘pinch-to-zoom’ feature on other products. This could ultimately lead to Apple’s patent not only being invalidated, but may also render the firm liable for patent royalties to the earlier developers in question.
In light of these new developments, Samsung has filed papers in order to pursue a retrial. However, the process of appeals and investigation is likely to take at least two years, due to the preliminary status of the Patent Office’s declaration.
This is the second time in the past three months that the Patent Office has reviewed one of Apple’s patents, after it came to light in October that the same action had been taken against its ‘rubber band’ user interface.

Samsung has stolen the crown from Nokia to become the world’s biggest handset maker, bringing the Finnish manufacturer’s 14-year reign to an end.
Samsung will account for 29 per cent of international smartphone shipments for 2012, according to IHS iSuppli. The number represents a five per cent on its market share in 2011.
Meanwhile, Nokia’s share for 2012 is estimated to be at 24 per cent, placing it behind Samsung in second place, having fallen from 30 per cent last year.
One of the key factors behind Samsung’s growth is the widespread adoption of smartphones and the decline of feature phones. IHS’ Wayne Lam said: “Smartphones represent the fastest-growing segment of the cellphone market—and will account for nearly half of all wireless handset shipments for all of 2012. Samsung’s successes and Nokia’s struggles in the cellphone market this year were determined entirely by the two companies’ divergent fortunes in the smartphone sector.”
IHS Suppli’s latest report also shows that Samsung is leading the race in the smartphone arena with 28 per cent of the market, with Nokia dropping significantly from 16 per cent to just five per cent.

ComScore data suggests that Samsung will soon bypass Apple to become the top choice smartphone brand in the UK.
For the three months ending October 2013 Apple claimed a 28 per cent share of total UK smartphone subscribers aged 13 and above. That’s a year-on-year gain of 1.5 per cent.
Samsung, however, now claims a 24 per cent share – that’s an impressive 12.8 per cent annual jump.
RIM, HTC and Nokia suffered annual declines of 2.5 per cent, 2.7 per cent and 8.1 per cent respectively, with the Finnish firm now languishing at the bottom of the table with a lowly market share of just 7.9 per cent.
Google’s Android operating system, meanwhile, has increased its lead over iOS, climbing 12.4 per cent year-on-year to 46.6 per cent. Apple grew its share by 1.5 per cent to 28 per cent.
Nokia was again the big loser here, with Symbian’s market share sitting at just 6.4 per cent – that’s an annual decline of 10.8 per cent.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform grew by just half a per cent to 3.1 per cent.

Next month, Disney Infinity will be revealed to the press at an event in Los Angeles. Aside from a lenticular invitation, there's nothing else concrete onDisney Infinity right now.
According to a Polygon source, what we're going to see is an open-world sandbox game with characters from Disney and Pixar. It mixes elements ofMinecraft, such as building, with Just Cause's open-world gameplay – if you played Toy Story 3: The Video Game, it sounds reminiscent of that game's . In fact, "Toy Box" is a codename for a project that sounds an awful lot like these rumors about Disney Infinity.
Disney Infinity is rumored to be on multiple platforms, including current consoles, iOS and Android devices, with development duties falling squarely on Utah-based Avalanche Software, the same developer responsible for Toy Story 3: The Game. According to Polygon's report, the mobile versions of Disney Infinity lacked the building aspects seen in the console versions. It also suggests that Disney considers the game as a "platform" to be expanded with more characters and scenarios as time goes by.

The gap between Google Play and the App Store appears to be closing, with the Android store showing an aggregated daily revenue growth of 43 per cent between August and November, trouncing that of its iOS counterpart, who registered 21 per cent growth.
While the growth figures certainly indicate that Android is hot on the heels of its iOS rival, there is still a significant distance between the two. On an average day in November, App Store revenue topped $15 million, as opposed to just $3.5 million for Google Play.
In terms of market revenue, the US sits atop the pile, followed by Japan, the UK and Australia, while the fastest growing markets for the iPhone are Japan (up 138 per cent), China (118 per cent) and Russia (96 per cent), while Android saw strong gains in Korea (94 per cent), Japan (60 per cent) and France (46 per cent).

My kid seems incredibly interested in my Android tablet, but I'm not too comfortable with letting her play with my browser. I've been hunting the app store for apps that I could let my kid play around with, but haven't found much. It seems like most apps are targeted for slightly older kids and are trying to teach them words, math or whatnot. Has anyone found any cool apps for approximately 6-month-old children? I'm mostly looking for something that makes funny noises or where you just have to e.g. track moving objects on the screen

After the rubber-banding, 'Steve Jobs' heuristics and pinch-to-zoom patents, another Apple patent in use against Samsung comes under pressure. An anonymous filer, most likely Samsung, has filed areexamination request against Apple's RE41,922 patent on a 'method and apparatus for providing translucent images on a computer display.' It's not among the patents a California jury evaluated this summer, but one of four patents an ITC judge preliminarily found Samsung to infringe. The reexamination request features five new pieces of prior art (three U.S. patents from the early 1990s and two Japanese patents), all of which dealt with translucent images. The patent office will decide next year whether to grant or deny the request for reexamination. Expect more such petitions targeting Apple patents.

Venturebeat is reporting that a successfully funded Kickstarter project for a portable phone charger that works with both Apple and Android devices has been canceled because Apple wouldn't let the creators license its Lightning connector. Quoting: 'Edison Junior, the technology and design lab behind the POP portable power station, is returning the full $139,170 in funding it received from Kickstarter backers to develop the device. Unfortunately, Apple has refused to give the project permission to license the Lightning charger in a device that includes multiple charging options. ... "We didn’t get a yes or a no up front," Siminoff said. "But as we kept going back and forth it was clear that it was getting harder. Then, when we saw that they weren’t even going to allow a Lightning connector and a 30-pin connector together, we knew it was over." He also said that, while Apple is a private company and can do whatever it wishes, it should watch out. "When you do things that are bad for the customer I think it will be bad for them.”''"Update: 12/21 22:16 GMT by S : Apple has relented. A spokesman for the company told Ars, "Our technical specifications provide clear guidelines for developing accessories and they are available to MFi licensees for free. We support accessories that integrate USB and Lightning connectors, but there were technical issues that prevented accessories from integrating 30-pin and Lightning connectors so our guidelines did not allow this. We have been working to resolve this and have updated our guidelines to allow accessories to integrate both 30-pin and Lightning connectors to support charging.

Merry Christmas! The USPTO is celebrating in a big way, with the copyright stamp making some pretty big rounds today. First up is a design patent for an iPod touch, which Cupertino filed back in August of 2011. It looks to be the fourth-gen model from 2010, especially given that the patent focuses on the very rounded edges. This iPod touch was the first version to include both front- and rear-facing cameras, and in any case, the design is miles thicker and shorter than this year's touch. As Patently Apple points out, this document also happens to be one of the last to list Steve Jobs as an inventor.

Sometimes, a patent grant is less about the technology itself than what it could mean for others. Case in point: a newly granted Apple patent for a "mini-SIM connector." The design complements earlier work and represents a straightforward approach to a SIM slot that prevents damage from inserting the card the wrong way and ejects the card through a plunger system. By securing the patent, however, Apple gains a bargaining chip in phone technology disputes, especially forSIM-related tussles; companies are less likely to start a fight if Apple can return fire. The claim doesn't give Apple a lock on subscriber modules by any means, but it could lead to other adopters treading carefully.

More than a few of us are getting phones and tablets as gifts this year, and Gameloft wants to be there the moment we're hunting for new apps to feed our devices. Accordingly, the developer has slashed the price on many of its recent games to 99 cents during the holidays, even including better-known titles like Asphalt 7 and Dark Knight Rises. Not surprisingly, the discounting doesn't include Modern Combat 4 and a few other releases -- there have to be profit-makers left somewhere, after all -- but it's a huge break for those who want a few starter titles and aren't concerned about always having the latest and greatest. Both Android and iOS gamers can splurge at the source links.

The perpetual challenge of developing an iPhone-friendly gamepad (or any phone-oriented gamepad) is the bulk, either for a gargantuan case or else a separate controller. If Justice Frangipane's team and iDevices have their way, that clunkiness will be a distant memory. Their proposed FlipSide case for iPhones (we see a prototype here) centers on Bluetooth 4.0 gamepad controls that stay clipped to the back when just checking email, but attach to the front for playtime. They'll save us from hunting down a wall outlet, too; the combination of a sensitive solar cell and a thin film battery from Infinite Power Solutions should keep the case powered up through even indoor lighting. The only real challenge is getting the case produced, as Frangipane is looking for crowdfunding to make the FlipSide a reality. Provided his group makes its donation target, though, there's the prospect of an Android version -- so those who don't play the iOS way could still reap the rewards if they chip in at the source link.

Mew-Genics will be available on iOS devices, but that's not all. Well, actually, that is all for today. The weekly Mew-Genics teaser simply says that the game will launch on multiple platforms, one of which is iOS, as demonstrated by the accompanying iPad mock-up. Considering the mobile angle and Edmund McMillen's recent involvement with Sony, we're personally hoping for a Vita release as well.
So far we've learned that Mew-Genics will feature a ton of cats, a rockin' soundtrack and magical trinkets such as petrified poop that lowers damage taken.

If we can rewind back to the beginning of August, you might remember hearing the news about an independent gaming venture known as the Ouya. Essentially the concept here is really pretty simple: this is an entirely open console that allows users to create and develop their own programs as they please. Unlike the mainstream machines, you won't need any special kind of development unit to create because every system sold in stores will be endowed with that kind of capability. In a nut shell then, what this console offers is the ability to experience the video game development scene without having to take the hacking risk that you all have experienced or considered with your Nintendos Xboxes and PlayStations.
When it comes to any home-spun scene emulators are always going to be a popular choice. After all, they can be relatively easy to develop when compared to a full-fledged title, and they offer an absolute ton of replay value. That being said, I wasn't too surprised when I heard about the possible upcoming NES emulator for the unit called EMUya. What's more interesting though is that supposedly a triple A dev responsible for games like Uncharted and Rage will be heading the project. Once completed, EMUya will use all four cores of the processor to provide for one of the best TV emulation solutions around. I don't know about you, but if the Ouya only costs $100 it already seems like a pretty good value.

The wireless patent wars don't pause at Christmas time, keeping numerous IP lawyers (and a certain litigation watcher) busy even at this time of year. No one seriously expected Samsung to turn the other cheek when Ericsson sued it and requested a U.S. import ban against a host of Galaxy devices. The Korean electronics giant, which is increasingly competing with Ericsson in the telecoms infrastructure market, just filed an ITC complaint of its own. The title of the complaint is Certain Wireless Communication Equipment and Articles Therein. That description would apply to dozens, no: hundreds, of patent lawsuits in the world. The complaint has not been published yet, but it would be out of character for Samsung not to assert some of its patents on wireless industry standards (and maybe some others, too)."

Did you pony up $699 or more to the Kickstarter-famed Ouyain hopes of an early hands-on with the unreleased gaming platform? If so, you may want to keep an eye on your email's inbox, because orders for the developer version of the Android-powered console are starting to ship out. As for the package itself, early adopters can expect a dev unit console, two controllers and a copy of the system's "ODK" software development kit. If you went all-in on Ouya and have received your order or notification email, we'd love to hear about it via the comments below.

Earlier this year, the Android-based Ouya game console project raised over nine times as much funding as they initially asked for in their Kickstarter campaign. Now, Ouya developer consoles are starting to ship, and folks on the Ouya team released a video showing what the developers should expect. As explained in the video, the console currently being shipped is by no means the final hardware, but promises to give developers everything they need to start developing apps and games for Ouya. The only surprise is that they decided to add a micro-USB port to the hardware, making it easy to hook up to a PC. The Ouya team has also released an SDK for the device (which they call the ODK — Ouya Development Kit), and have provided most of the source under the Apache 2.0 license. They wrote, 'We think we’ve got a great team of developers here at OUYA, but there’s strength in numbers and a wealth of passionate, talented people out there. We want you, the developers of the world, to work alongside us to continually improve our platform. It’s our hope that releasing a more open ODK will help foster such innovation.

Apple's patent claim against Samsung's Galaxy S III mini is no more, with Cupertino citing the phone's lacking availability in the US for the amendment to its original November filing. In the ongoing litigation between the two electronics giants, Samsung argued that it's Galaxy S III mini didn't warrant inclusion in the latest volley of Samsung devices Apple wants added to its patent lawsuit; Apple apparently agreed, and is thusly withdrawing its claim against that particular device. The argument also highlights the sad news that the S III mini won't join Samsung's Galaxy lineup in the US.
An agreement filing spotted by Reuters from a San Jose, CA. US District Court revealed today's news, coming just days afterJudge Lucy Koh dismissed a request to permanently ban saleson several Samsung devices. It's unclear if the other Samsung devices Apple asked to be added to the ongoing case are approved yet by the court, but we can certainly count the S III mini out for the time being.

Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there's signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that's potentially very striking -- and more than a little reminiscent of2001's species-changing monoliths. There's no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn't be surprised knowing the company's history and the Note II's strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don't expect any Starchildren as a result.

It's a little early for an Ouyateardown, but Kickstarters who chipped in $699 won't have to wait long to see what the little console is made of -- Ouya's developer hardware is transparent. The console's team decided to cut the inevitable march of unboxing videos off at the neck, offering fans a quick preview of the package it's shipping out to devs. The standard accoutrements are there -- the tiny console itself, two prototype controllers with batteries, HDMI and power adapters, plus a micro USB cord and a letter to developers thanking them for their investment and warning them of the early build's bugs. The note also cautions deep-pocketed gamers that the device is built specifically for developer use, and has no games to placate eager couch potatoes. The video shows the console booting up, and even demonstrates how easy it is to open the hardware. Skip on past the break to get a glimpse at what early adopters and developers are getting their hands on.

If you're keeping track of the multiple, and let's face it, tiresome Samsung / Apple patent debacle, a document that just turned up at the ITC might spell more trouble for the Korean manufacturer. It's a publicly redacted version of Judge Pender's recommendations, and pertains to the October ruling that deemed Samsung borrowed four of Cupertino's designs. The most iconic being design patent D618,678 (that which you see above). The others include multi-touch patent 7,479,949 (which was tentatively invalidated) along with two other patents (RE41,922 and 7,912,501) relating to graphic display elements and audio hardware detection. If the recommendations are adopted -- and FOSS Patents suggests this is entirely possible -- Samsung could face a US import ban after a 60 day presidential review, an order prohibiting "significant" sales of infringing products in America along with a posting a bond for 88 percent of the entered value of mobile phones (plus 32.5 percent for media players and 37.6 percent for tablets) that include the breaching design features. Pender has, however, reportedly cleared several Samsung "designarounds" which, if implemented to satisfaction, would mean the tech giant could continue trading. For now though, the recommendations are awaiting the Commission's review.

PPSSPP Git (2012/12/29) is compiled. PPSSPP is a fast and portable PSP emulator for Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, written in C++.
PPSSPP Git Changelog:
* Merge pull request #284 from unknownbrackets/savestates
Fix some missing things / bugs in save states.
* Fix some missing things / bugs in save states.
* Fix android build.
* Merge pull request #281 from unknownbrackets/savestates
Savestate tweaks (gzip, Windows cli/UI cleanup)
* Revert "Save states using gzip, load either way."
This reverts commit df627f77388f5d18cc299ce465fe5164e15aecbb.
* Fix a crash with FPL objects in save states.
* Save states using gzip, load either way.
Could implement an option to save states uncompressed. There's
a small performance hit.
Test files were 8% - 14% the size, but these are just from menus/etc.
* Disable load/save while no iso loaded.
* Add a command line option to load a state.
For debugging.
* Restore run/pause shortcut. Reset doesn't need a shortcut.
* Merge pull request #280 from Orphis/gpucommon
Refactor some NullGPU and GLES common parts into GPUCommon class
* Move InterpretList and ProcessDLQueue to GPUCommon
* Move display list management to common GPU class
* Merge pull request #279 from raven02/linear-fix
Fall back to original filter logic when linear filter option is off
* Fall back to original filter logic when filter option is off
* Reset JIT before saving/loading state
* Change save state extension to ".ppst"
* Quick build fix for gcc
* Merge pull request #266 from unknownbrackets/savestates
Initial progress on savestates (requesting review only)
* Add a simple devctl to verify the state.
Could do more, but this should be useful.
* Add some basic Windows UI for save states.
* Save the savedata and other dialog state.
Although, hopefully it wouldn't be running anyway.
* Savestate cleanup + be more careful with vectors.
For some reason I debugged it going into std::string so I just made
them all more explicit which fixed everything.
* Fix memory leak in msgpipe when loading state.
* Fix kernel object loading (ouch) from save states.
Also a fix to SAS voices not saving right.
* Start saving the state of the GPU.
Not 100% sure this is all that's needed, but let's try it.
* Don't store pointers in VagDecoder directly.
I'm assuming it's fine to not fix read_ when end_ happens.
Shouldn't be any performance penality, really.
* Start save stating audio, plus minor fixes.
* Warniof the sceIo defAction is used when stating.
This is broken anyway so skipping for now.
* Save state of a bunch of small modules.
* Fix a memory leak in the ISO filesystem.
* Start save stating the filesystem state.
Plus minor fixes and at least an attempt to make states the same
on both 32 and 64 bit.
* Snapshot the CPU state as well.
* Don't leak MipsCall objects.
* Add a registry for actions so they can be stated.
Also add late loaders to ensure things are hooked up properly.
* Change threadqueue and currentThread to be SceUIDs.
hmm, kind of a big change. Tried to add some checks to be safe.
* Require interrupt handlers to be registered.
This allows it to be save stated sanely.
* Add state saving to tertiary kernel modules.
* Add CoreTiming to save states.
I hope DoLinkedList works, seems like it should.
* Add a mechanism to restore event callback ptrs.
Ugh, more duplicates. Maybe can find a good way to refactor.
* Also handle save states while paused.
* Run save state operations at next Advance().
Should take some question marks out of things.
* Add Verify() method to quickly test states work.
* Fix a warning if loading wrong version / etc.
* Implement a factory for kernel objects.
Couldn't think of a better way to do this, maybe there's some fancy
one I don't know about.
Also finished up a couple left over kernel objects.
Maybe a quarter the way there?
* Add basic state for the memory kernel objects.
Not the actual memory partitions quite yet.
* Add basic DoState() to tertiary kernel objects.
* Initial state saving for kernelObjects.
* Add more stuff to GeDisasm. Advance index pointer on indexed draws.
* Just some cleanup of GPU code
* Merge pull request #277 from raven02/master
User define linear filtering
* User define linear filtering
* Possible buildfix
* Merge pull request #275 from Xele02/master

on non windows platforms. Adding a menu item on Windows should be
trivial.

* Clamp colors before fragment shader.
* Merge pull request #264 from tmaul/master

SternisheFan writes with an excerpt as carried by CNET of former Apple design chief Hartmut Esslinger's upcoming book, titled Design Forward: Creative Strategies for Sustainable Change. Writing of Steve Job's integration of design as an essential element across the company as a whole, Esslinger says:"The company's [then] CEO, Michael Scott, had created different business divisions for each product line, including accessories such as monitors and memory drives. Each division had its own head of design and developed its products the way it wanted to. As a result, Apple's products shared little in the way of a common design language or overall synthesis In essence, bad design was both the symptom and a contributing cause of Apple's corporate disease. Steve's desire to end the disjoined approach gave birth to a strategic design project that would revolutionize Apple's brand and product lines, change the trajectory of the company's future, and eventually redefine the way the world thinks about and uses consumer electronics and communication technologies."CNET shows off a few of those old designs (many of them appearing unsurprisingly fresh), but for much more of them see these images at designboom.

Ars Technica reports that "On Friday the ITC filed a redacted version of a remedy suggested by ITC Administrative Law Judge Thomas Pender, in which he recommended a ban be enforced against Samsung products that were found to infringe upon four Apple patents. The judge also recommended that Samsung post a bond for 88 percent of the value of its infringing mobile phones, as well as 32.5 percent of the value of infringing media players, and 37.6 percent of the value of infringing tablets." That sounds like a clear loss for Samsung, but the judge "also approved several workarounds suggested by Samsung that might permit the company to continue selling the implicated products (which include the Transform, Acclaim, Indulge and Intercept smartphones, according to Computerworld). These workarounds would sidestep infringing on Apple's four patents—which include one design patent and three technology patents." Ruling and remedy have yet to be approved by the panel whose word would make them final.

Rudy Giuliani had John Gotti to worry about; Mike Bloomberg has Steve Jobs. Despite all-time lows for the city in homicides and shootings, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said overall crime in New York City was up 3.3% in 2012 due to iPhone, iPad and other Apple device thefts, which have increased by 3,890 this year. 'If you just took away the jump in Apple, we'd be down for the year,' explained Marc La Vorgna, the mayor's press secretary. 'The proliferation of people carrying expensive devices around is so great,' La Vorgna added. 'It's something that's never had to be dealt with before.' Bloomberg also took to the radio, urging New Yorkers who didn't want to become a crime statistic to keep their iDevices in an interior, hard-to-reach pocket: 'Put it in a pocket in sort of a more body-fitting, tighter clothes, that you can feel if it was — if somebody put their hand in your pocket, not just an outside coat pocket.' But it seems the best way to fight the iCrime Wave might be to slash the $699 price of an iPhone(unactivated), which costs an estimated $207 to make. The U.S. phone subsidy model reportedly adds $400+ to the price of an iPhone. So, is offering unlocked alternatives at much more reasonable prices than an iPhone — like the $299 Nexus 4, for starters — the real key to taking a bite out of cellphone crime? After all, didn't dramatic price cuts pretty much kill car stereo theft?
