The first episode of two-parter Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse should be available soon on iOS. Developer Revolution Software says it has submitted the final build to Apple and is awaiting approval.
Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse made its debut on Steam back in December. The game is available on PC, Mac OSX and Linux; a PS Vita port is also available. The second and final part of Broken Sword 5 will be available in Q1 2014 as a free update to the base game.
Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse, the latest in the iconic point-and-click adventure series started in 1996, was financed through Kickstarter, where Revolution managed to secure $771,561 to make the game. Broken Sword 5follows lawyer George Stobbart and journalist Nico Collard, both of whom find themselves caught up in the theft of a mysterious painting – an art piece that has ties to Spanish fascists in the second World War.

Hot on the heels of its first original mobile IP, Sony Pictures TV launched another mobile game last week, Sports Jeopardy. The sports trivia game uses Jeopardy's branding and quiz show style to challenge players with thousands of sports-related questions. It is available now on iOS and Android via Google Play and the Amazon App Store.
Sports Jeopardy includes a leaderboard-enabled leveling system with challenges and achievements as well as turn-based online and local multiplayer modes. To spice up the traditional Jeopardy formula, the game also features power-ups like Time Out to add more time to the clock for answers and Double Down, which provides another Daily Double bonus on a tile on the board. The game is 99 cents with the option of additional in-game purchases, and also uses in-game coins for unlockable jerseys, podiums and avatar accessories.

You won't need to use the Force to play Lego Star Wars Microfighters, the new top-down shooter from TT Games - unless "the Force" is what you've nicknamed your iPod, iPhone or iPad. The iOS game is based on the Lego toy line of the same name, and allows you to pilot iconic spacecraft from the Star Wars universe.
Players can choose to strap in to a number of craft from the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War eras. X-Wings? They're in there. Millenium Falcon? You betcha. Snowspeeder? Of course. For those megalomaniacal and evil enough, there's even a Death Star to be piloted. Ships are flown through 18 levels take take place on Endor, Hoth, Yevon and Geonosis.
The cost for entry into this brick-and-pegs-filled wonderland is pretty micro as well: just $0.99 puts you in the pilot seat. Good luck, and may the Force - you know, your iOS device - be with you.

Apple devices seem to have violent tendencies. An iPad previously filled a Vodafone store with smoke and flames, while an iPhone exploded on a flight.
Now, one teenage girl from Maine, US, has been on the wrong end of an iPhone glitch as the device caught fire in her pocket, which resulted in her being taken to hospital and treated by an emergency crew for moderate burns.
The principal told Sea Coast Online the student sat down and "heard a pop" from her back trouser pocket where the iPhone was, which immediately resulted in smoke appearing and the girl performing a "stop, drop and roll."
The device is said to have been visibly burnt, with the problem arising due to the battery experiencing an electrical short.

App stores are a breeding ground for pirated or fake apps that want nothing but to ruin your day – here are some to avoid.
Some of the biggest apps available have been downloaded more than 100 million times each, making them prime targets for cloning.
Dodgy apps pose a number of threats to users, including the risk of identity theft, spam and much more.
Lookout keeps its eyes open for what it calls ‘shady apps’ – it analyses 30,000 from around the world every day in an attempt to clear up our app stores from scum.
These are a few of the apps that we should steer well clear of.
Pirated app: It is mainly popular apps such as Candy Crush, Angry Birds and Farmville that get pirated.
They come in the form of fake free versions, that contain ads that put the user in danger of exposing their personal data, or receiving increased spam.
Most of the time these apps only cost £0.69, so the best way to avoid being caught out by pirates, is not to be a cheapskate.
Fake anti virus apps: More than 800,000 Lookout users have come face-to-face with fake antivirus apps last year. These little bastards promise to keep your devices safe however charge extortionate rates, and inform the user of infections when their devices are clean as a whistle.
It turns out these apps are responsible for more than 80 per cent of malware.
Best way to avoid being caught out by this is to avoid them all together. Stick with what you know and don’t fall for the canned positive reviews.
Pornographic apps: Read about these naughty little devils here.
Free money apps: A recent app called Bazuc lured people into its evil web by promising free money if they gave it access to their SMS messages. Those users were surprised when no money was received, and their personal information was exposed. Really??
Basically, money isn’t free and in the majority of cases those apps will take advantage of such greed by punishing your data. So don’t download them.
Black market apps: These nasty appy-slappers just simply lie – they tell you that you are getting one thing, and when you get all excited about it they punch you in the phone. Really hard with spam and ads.
Examples of these are battery optimisers, or fake games such as Temple Jump – which tricks people into thinking it is Temple Run – but its not, because it says jump, not run!
The key here is to look at what you are downloading – and where you are downloading it from. Stick to Google Play, Amazon or the Apple App Store and take the time to find out if it is what it says it is.

The Galaxy S4 Mini also keeps all of its original specs.
Both devices will be available in Russia from next week, with the S4 setting consumers back 22,990 roubles (£400).

The long-rumoured Apple smart watch could be charged using wireless power, rumours have suggested.
The New York Times, citing “a person briefed on the product”, reported that “Apple has been testing a method to charge the battery [of its smart watch device] wirelessly with magnetic induction”.
The method of charging is already used with some mobile phones, which can be placed on a flat ‘power mattress’ surface to recharge without needing to be plugged in.
Additionally, “people close to the efforts” of the creation of the ‘iWatch’ device stated that solar power was being considered as one way of keeping the watch alive during the daytime. Kinetic charging, which would convert the movement of the wearer’s arm into battery power, has also been considered by the company.
Apple was awarded a patent for a flexible-form battery last year, fuelling rumours that it was working on a wearable device such as a smart watch. The hypothetical device could contain both the battery and a similarly flexible solar panel underneath a curved screen, some observers have suggested.
However, the sources who revealed the details of Apple’s research efforts added that “such experiments are years from becoming a reality”.

We've heard that when Apple reveals its first smartwatch product, there's going to be a heavy focus on health and fitness, but There might also be a way to charge the wearable without plugging it in, according to a report from the New York Times. Inductive charging came in a wave of smartphones last year, including Google's Nexus 4 and Nokia's Lumia 920 range, although we don't often see it in anything smaller than a phone (or camera) form-factor. Apple, however, is looking into cramming the same technology into its iWatch, or whatever it eventually calls its debut wearable.

Samsung smartphones are to receive their own dedicated retail presence on the UK High Street.
Carphone Warehouse has announced plans to rebrand 60 of its 2,000 stores as dedicated Samsung outlets. These will roll out in the next three months across seven countries including the UK, which is expected to host between ten and 15 of them.
The shops will sport a minimalist white and blue design reminiscent of Apple’s pioneering retail design and will even offer ‘Genius’ style in-house tech experts to help customers.
Apple currently operates 98 stores across Europe, 37 of which are in the UK.
Samsung last year set up three dedicated stores in Spain which were run by the Carphone Warehouse. The Korean form says Carphone Warehouse will be tasked with running 60 per cent of stores.

Arriving in the US just in time for Valentine's Day, the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is set to ship stateside February 13th with an equally beefy $850 price tag. If you'll recall, the 12.2-inch behemoth was announced back at CES and sports the same S Pen chops as the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 outed then as well. The 64GB WiFi version is up for pre-order for folks in the States over at Office Depot, should you be looking for extra screen real estate and don't mind the added heft that it requires. Need a quick refresher on the device? Take a peek back at our hands-onto do just that.

The iPhone 5 was thinner, lighter and came with a bigger display than itspredecessor. There's plenty to like about this handset, even if the Lightning connector broke compatibility with 100 million iDevice accessories. But what we want to know is this: if you had disguised yourself as Jonathan Ive and snuck into Infinite Loop's development labs, what would you have done differently? For instance, your humble narrator would have sacrificed a few more millimeters of thinness in exchange for a bigger battery. After all, those few MMs are a walk in the park compared to hauling a battery sleeve around with you all day. But what about you? Head on over to the forum thread and share your wisdom.

AT&T's current Mobile Share plans can be quite expensive for families and small offices that don't want to be tied to a contract. However, service is potentially more affordable through a new plan launching Sunday. The tier starts at $130 per month with two off-contract lines for new customers (existing contract customers can also sign up) and 10GB of shared data, but it costs a more modest $15 per extra line instead of the regular $25; the carrier reckons that a family of four could save anywhere from $40 to $100 per month over the regular rates. You can go for more than 10GB of data if your clan craves extra bandwidth, too. It's not clear if AT&T's deal will be enough to lure families away from low-cost carriers like T-Mobile, but it's certainly a better offer than before.

The White House won't be going it alone as it brings US classrooms into the internet era through its ConnectED initiative -- it just revealed that a host of technology firms will also lend a hand. Apple plans to donate $100 million in iPads, MacBooks and software to underprivileged schools, while Autodesk and O'Reilly Media will give away free software and content. Microsoft, in turn, will heavily discount Windows to lower educational PC prices. Carriers are getting in on the action, too. AT&T and Sprint have both pledged to offer free wireless broadband to schools for multiple years; Verizon isn't giving away service, but it will donate up to $100 million in cash and other commitments. The combined efforts aren't going to fix the American education system by themselves, but they could create a level playing field for schools across the country.

If you're pondering a new phone or Windows device, Microsoft is keen to help out at the moment. First of all, it's offering up to $250 of store credit for your well-kept smartphone or tablet, depending on the model. That trumps the $200 iPad trade-in from last year and would get you a deal on any product (sold in participating stores) and not just the Surface Pro 2 like last time. Redmond also wants to prod those looking to get Xbox Music by offering a no-contract Nokia Lumia 520 or 521T-Mobile version gratis with a one year, $100 pass. That's a phone we'd likely pass on at the regular price, but if you're looking to get Xbox Music anyway, "free" definitely works. The trade-in expires on March 2nd, but you'll have to think faster to get the Lumia 520 or 521 -- that deal's over on February 17th.

Samsung sure knows how to whet the appetite of its fans. The Korean tech giant has announced that it's holding an "Unpacked 5" event at Mobile World Congress on February 24th -- a potentially not-so-subtle reference to the upcoming Galaxy S 5. There's no guarantees that the new high-end smartphone will appear in Barcelona, especially when Samsung has only unveiled one Galaxy S device (theGalaxy S II) at the trade gathering. However, our invitation mentions a "flagship product," and it comes nearly a year after the company invited us to get "ready 4 the show" -- we all know what that digit was referencing. Whether or not the fifth-generation flagship makes an appearance at the event, you can be sure that we'll be there.

I have started this week with the VGB-Android 3.9.15 release, a new version of my GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, and Super GameBoy emulator:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.vgb
I have been fixing hardware emulation bugs over the last couple of weeks. As result, Aerostar, Alfred Chicken, Alien Olympics, Robocop 2, Shadowgate, and many other games work now. I have also added the DI+HALT bug emulation, where CPU will execute the instruction following HALT twice, if interrupts are disabled. Had to make this emulation optional though, as some games (such as Robocop) do not work with it. Finally, the Settings dialog is now tabbed, with the separate tab for hardware emulation options, and some other options (such as fast-fowarding and display orientation) have changed their places. - Added optional DI+HALT CPU bug emulation.
- Now enabling LCD controller on startup (fixed Aerostar, Alfred Chicken, and many others).
- Now disabling interrupts on startup (fixed Robocop 2, Shadowgate, and many others).
- Now clearing scratch RAM after reset.
- Settings are now tabbed, for easier navigation.
- Added Emulation section to the Settings.
- Moved some options from Input and Video sections to General.
- Reordered Settings by importance.
- Added Antz and Antz Racing to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Armada FX Racers to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Animaniacs to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Asterix to the Cheatopedia.

Also fixed crashes in the Metal Slug game and fixed the repeating sound that occurred in some games when using OpenSLES audio mode. See below for complete list of changes.
- Now locking out opposite dpad arrows (Metal Slug crashes gone).
- Fixed repeating audio (pause in Phantasy Star Collection).
- Added support for Android devices based on Intel x86 CPUs.

It has been three months since Google launched KitKat, yet it is installed on less than two per cent of all active Android devices worldwide.
New data released by Google shows that KitKat is installed on 1.8 per cent of all Android phones or tablets that log in to the Google Play store.
Jelly Bean is still the most popular Android OS with 60.7 per cent, followed by Gingerbread with 20 per cent and Ice Cream Sandwich taking 16.1 per cent.
With KitKat’s rollout mainly coming to Nexus and Motorola products, it seems many third parties have held back on finalising upgrade plans.

Data from Futuresource Consulting Research has revealed tremendous growth in the smartphone market throughout 2013.
The firm says that global smartphone shipments grew 43 per cent last year, hitting 1.02bn units.
Tablet shipments, meanwhile, grew 57 per cent to 243m units, with 90m units being shipped in the quarter ending December alone. Apple and Samsung claimed a 47 per cent share of the tablet market between them.
"The smartphone market's continued growth has been driven by ever-increasing demand in emerging markets, particularly in Asia,” market analyst Oliver Rowntree stated.
“China was the largest market globally, with a total size of 310m units, and was dominated in large part by domestic brands such as Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi and Coolpad.

It’s been just over thirty years since the original Macintosh was released, and [hudson] over at NYC Resistor thought it would be a good time to put some old hardware to use. He had found an all-in-one Mac SE “on the side of a road” a while ago (where exactly are these roads, we wonder), and the recent diamond anniversary for the original mac platformconvinced him to do some major hardware hacking.
Inspired by a six-year-old project from a NYC Resistor founder aptly named the 24th anniversary Mac, [hudson] decided to replace the old hardware with more powerful components – in this case, a BeagleBone Black. Unlike the earlier build, though, the original CRT would be salvaged; the analog board on the Mac SE has pins for video, hsync, vsync, and power.
To get a picture on the old CRT, [hudson] needed to write a software video card that used the BeagleBone’s PRU. The CRT isn’t exactly “modern” tech, and everything must be clocked at exactly 60.1 Hz lest the CRT emit a terrible buzzing sound.
With a software video card written for the old CRT, the BeagleBone becomes the new brains of this beige box. It runs all the classic Linux GUI apps including XEyes and XScreenSaver, although flying toasters might be out of the question. He also managed toload up the Hackaday retro site with xterm, making this one of the best ways to make an old Mac SE useful.

As Mobile World Congress approaches, it appears to become more and more evident that Samsung has chosen the Barcelona event later this month as the venue to launch the Galaxy S 5. This morning, the New York Times has confirmed through its sources that this will indeed be the case, and it's going to be quite a bit different from last year's Galaxy S flagship launch. Whereas last year's controversial show featured Broadway-style antics and blatant stereotyping, theNYT reports that "Unpacked 2014 Episode 1," the launch event, will be much more low-key.
The publication also mentions a few details about the device itself. The GS5 will reportedly feature some design enhancements and spec improvements, such as a fancier camera and better processor (we'd wager that we'll see a 16MP camera and a choice of Exynos 6 or Snapdragon 805), but it sounds like Samsung plans to dial back the number of new firmware features. Curiously, the same sources tell the Times that the S5 oddly won't come with a bump in display resolution to Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440); if this is indeed the case, it likely means we'll be seeing a 1080p screen on two Galaxy S flagships in a row. We find this a bit surprising, but we wonder if supply constraints could be a reason why Samsung is holding off for now. The report also claims that we won't see an eye scanner this time around.
Finally, the Times reports that Samsung isn't going to wait for its usual yearly product cycle to launch a new Galaxy Gear -- apparently, the second version of the smartwatch is also on the Unpacked agenda just a few months after its predecessor arrived. The product's quick turnaround would certainly be a huge surprise, but given its relatively poor reception and reportedly low sales, it's not unreasonable to suggest that the company wants to push out a new and improved version as soon as possible.

Samsung tends not to hop around when it comes to design language, instead, choosing to gently sail the calmer waters of familiarity. Probably the biggest deviation from those well-worn design notes of late was the leather-look plastic back that adorned the Galaxy Note 3. We certainly preferred it to the recent smooth, fingerprint-friendly affairs found on the Galaxy S III and S 4. It seems the phone giant did too, and has released a new version of the GS 4 in Korea (Samsung Galaxy S 4 LTE-A, if you're interested) that features the same textured effect on the rear -- along with the not-so-needed faux stitching. Oh, and "rose gold" makes a comeback on the metal-look details too! So, while this might be no good to you, with your slippy-slidey OG Galaxy S-whatever, with number five potentially being just around the corner, it could be a suggestion of what it might look like.

Perpetual court combatants Apple and Samsung have revealed their final list of allegations ahead of a trial starting March 31st. Though each started with five disputed patents, Samsung only has four now since a multimedia sync patent wasknocked out earlier by Judge Lucy Koh. She also gave Apple a summary judgement win on its auto-complete IP, putting it ahead before the trial even begins. As for the rest, it's worth noting that all of Apple's patents are related to user interaction, while two of Samsung's are standards-essential (FRAND) patents -- which companies are normally obligated to license out. Samsung did have one point in its favor, however: the USPTO has agreed to take a second look at the validity of Apple's aforementioned auto-complete patent.
As for the devices accused of infringing those patents, none are very recent models and many aren't even on the market anymore. However, the historical sales of each will affect the size of any award given by the court if an allegation is upheld. That's a lot of infringement for ultra-popular models like the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s, which have far outsold disputed models from the previous trial (like Samsung's original Galaxy S). Other names on the list include the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 from Samsung, along with Apple's iPad 2, iPad with Retina display (3rd-gen), iPad with Retina display (4th-gen) and iPad Mini (the original, without a Retina display). Of course, there's always theupcoming negotiations between company CEOs to avoid all that, but... nah, who are we kidding.

nds4droid by jeffq is a free, open source Nintendo DS emulator written for Android smartphones. It is based off of the excellent emulator DeSmuME. The source code can be found on sourceforge.
Changes:* Changed the default key mapping to open the options menu to “KEYCODE_BUTTON_START.” This should be a better default for controller-based systems like the OUYA or the NVIDIA SHIELD. It will require a full reinstall of the app for this default to take effect.
* Added the ability to access the settings screen from the ROM browser options menu.
* Enabled compatibility for devices without a touchscreen.

Developer.nokia.com organized another Imaging challenge for developers. This time I decided to play with the chroma key and I created two Green Screen applicatons. You can find my article from Nokia wiki: Green_Screen_Magic(Chroma_Key)_with_Nokia_Imaging_ SDK
Green Screen Helper, an app to help users set up a high quality green screen in preparation for Chroma Key photography. The application uses the chroma key filter in real time to make a selected colour black – enabling the user to see which parts of the screen will not be properly filtered when applying the chroma key filter. This is helpful, since it then becomes easy to see where the editing scene needs to be fixed – by adjusting the lights, or fixing wrinkles. In addition, the hue range sensitivity accepted by the filter can be adjusted: a broader hue range will be more tolerant of poor lighting and wrinkles in the background, but may result in some of the subject also being selected.
The other application is called Green Screen Magic, it’s a simple photo editing app which will replace the green screen area with a background. This app uses the same approach as the previous app to help the user to select the chroma key, and adjust sensitivity. After that it uses the blend functionality to combine two images.

The 8GB Ouya is $30 off until Monday, dropping its price from $100 to $70, all in the name of love (and Hallmark cards). Enter the coupon code "OUYA<3" at checkout via the Ouya store by Monday and not only will the console magically fall in price, but it should arrive on your doorstep in time for Valentine's Day, Ouya promises.
Ouya, a $99 Android microconsole crowdfunded to the tune of $8.6 million in 2012, hit retail in June 2013. A 16GB version for $130 launched late last month, iterating on a limited edition, white 16GB model offered during the holidays. In mid-January this year, Ouya co-founder Muffi Ghadiali left the company as it underwent some "changes."

Players who did not enjoy EA's free-to-play Android version of Dungeon Keeperfound themselves unable to voice their displeasure in the days following its release, as Pocket Gamer discovered that the game actively discourages less-than-perfect ratings via Google Play.
After playing Dungeon Keeper for several minutes, an in-game pop-up requests a Google Play rating, giving players the option of submitting either a 5-star vote or a rating of 1-4 stars. Choosing the "5 Stars" option lets users proceed through the ratings process normally. Selecting the "1-4 Stars" option prevents users from submitting a rating at all, instead confronting them with a request for direct feedback – a result akin to voting in a Pawnee election.
Players can still rate Dungeon Keeper directly via Google Play, however, and nothing prevents users from submitting a lower rating after pressing the in-app "5 Stars" button. The game currently sits at an average rating of 4.3 stars out of 5.
Speaking to Eurogamer, an EA Mobile representative defended the tactic as a method to encourage detailed player feedback. "The 'rate this app' feature in the Google Play version of Dungeon Keeper was designed to help us collect valuable feedback from players who don't feel the game is worth a top rating," the representative said. "We wanted to make it easier for more players to send us feedback directly from the game if they weren't having the best experience. Players can always continue to leave any rating they want on the Google Play Store."

Following yesterday's appearance on New Zealand's app store, Final Fantasy 6has hopped the Pacific and is now available to classic RPG fans in the United States.
Priced at $16, this most recent remake of the fan-favorite epic features modern graphics, a redesigned user interface, and the ability to save your game directly to the cloud. This version of Final Fantasy 6 boasts all of the additional content found in the 2006 Game Boy Advance remake, including four new Espers, two new areas, three new spells and a handy bestiary. Missing from this release are the full-motion video segments that bookend the 1999 PlayStation incarnation of Final Fantasy 6.
There are two caveats to keep in mind before you hand your cash to publisher Square Enix: First, Final Fantasy 6 is compatible only with more recent iOS devices. If you own a model older than the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 you're out of luck. Further, Square Enix notes that "[c]ertain in-game conditions may cause the app to close unexpectedly on iPhone 4," and warns users to save their games frequently.

Sony has confirmed it is quitting the PC business and is selling its VAIO brand to Japan Industrial Partners, as rumoured earlier this week.
It hopes to complete the sale by the end of March.
Sony said in a statement: "The company has determined that concentrating its mobile product line-up on smartphones and tablets and transferring its PC business to a new company established by JIP is the optimal solution.
"As a part of the business transfer to JIP, Sony will cease planning, design and development of PC products. Manufacturing and sales will also be discontinued after the spring 2014 line-up to be launched globally. Even after Sony withdraws from the PC market, Sony customers will continue to receive aftercare customer services."
Approximately 250 to 300 Sony Corporation and Sony EMCS Corporation staff involved in PC operations are expected to be hired by the new company established by Japan Industrial Partners (JIP).
Sony says it will also 'explore opportunities' for other employees to be transferred to other businesses within the Sony Group.

Politicians and law enforcement officials in California will introduce a bill on Friday that requires all smartphones and tablet PCs sold in the state be equipped with a digital 'kill-switch' that would make the devices useless if stolen. The bill is a response to a rise in thefts of portable electronics devices, often at knife or gunpoint, being seen across the state. Already half of all robberies in San Francisco and 75 percent of those in Oakland involve a mobile device and the number is rising in Los Angeles, according to police figures. The trend is the same in major cities across the U.S. and the California bill, if it passes, could usher in kill-switch technology nationwide if phone makers choose not to produce custom devices for California. California Senate bill 962 says all smartphones and tablet PCs sold from Jan. 1, 2015, should have 'a technological solution that can render the essential features of the device inoperable when the device is not in possession of the rightful owner.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has some advice for Apple CEO Tim Cook: consider offering a phone based on the rival Google Android platform. Speaking at the Apps World conference in San Francisco, Wozniak made the suggestion of an Apple Android device when responding to a question about the fate of the faltering BlackBerry platform, saying that BlackBerry should have built an Android phone, and that Apple could do so, too. 'BlackBerry's very sad for me,' Wozniak lamented. 'I think it's probably too late now' for an Android-based BlackBerry phone. Apple, Woz said, has had some lucky victories in the marketplace in the past decade, and BlackBerry's demise may provide a cautionary tale: 'There's nothing to keep Apple out of the Android market as a secondary phone market.

The developer of hit mobile sensation Flappy Bird has said he will be removing the game from all app stores following intense scrutiny of the title.
In a series of tweets, Vietnam-based creator Dong Nguyen said Flappy Bird will be taken offline tomorrow (Sunday February 9th) as he "cannot take this anymore".
He stated his decision had nothing to do with legal issues.

"We don't have a mobile gaming industry anymore. We have a mobile scamming industry."So said Thomas Baekdal in a column last week, swinging for the head of a nail with a strike so true that I found myself letting out an involuntary splutter of agreement. It wasn't so long ago that mobile gaming - and by extension tablet gaming - was the great white hope. Amidst the stagnation of traditional console and computer games, mobile was a hotbed of imagination and innovation where none of the usual rules applied. As the big old studios and publishers disintegrated, mobile allowed the smartest survivors to land on their feet and make the kind of games they and we really cared about.Nowadays it's a very different picture. There are a few people still doing good work on mobile (Simogo and the guy behind Blek are the first two that spring to mind), but the majority of smart indie developers have moved on to Steam or been signed up by Sony. They leave the mobile app stores to a new breed of business optimisers engaged in what increasingly feels like a pitiable race to the bottom. A few of these people are making a lot of money, but at what cost? The latest example of their output is Dungeon Keeper, which joins Electronic Arts' burgeoning shop of horrors. EA draws more attention than most when it tries this stuff because it uses cherished properties like Ultima to do so, and it should know better, but in many respects it's no worse than the likes of King and Zynga, who exist primarily to behave this way rather than just dabbling in it. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...eper-and-learn

Wondering what Windows Phone 8.1's rumored notification hub would look like? You may be looking at it right now. Winphollowers claims to have a leaked Microsoft presentation outlining the feature, which might be called Action Center. While Windows Phone's approach to notifications would share much in common with what we've seen for a while in Android and iOS, it would have a few tricks up its sleeve. A driving mode shortcut would be available to (presumably) keep distractions to a minimum while on the road. Apps may also have more control over their notifications than you've seen on some other platforms. Alerts would silently appear, update or vanish, making it easy to deliver constantly changing information (think sports scores) or to clear out time-sensitive notices when they're no longer relevant. There's no guarantee that we'll see Action Center in 8.1, but the historically reliable WPCentral vouches for its existence -- we won't be surprised if it's part of the final OS release.

It turns out we're not the only ones who are ready to see this patent battle royalecome to an end. Last night, Judge Lucy Koh denied Samsung a retrial in the case that will not die, but took the opportunity to shame Apple's lawyers for bringing the Korean company's foreignness into the equation. The court-appointed shaming comes as a result of closing arguments made during a partial retrial that saw a portion of Apple's original award bumped from $450 million down to $290 million in damages. At the time, Apple's attorney argued that Samsung's infringement of Apple's patents could have an impact on the US economy. When I was young, I used to watch television on televisions that were manufactured in the United States. Magnavox, Motorola, RCA. These were real companies. They were well known and they were famous. They were creators. They were inventors. They were like the Apple and Google today.
But they didn't protect their intellectual property. They couldn't protect their ideas. And you all know the result. There are no American television manufacturers today.
Samsung originally moved for a mistrial in that case based on those comments, but was denied. Instead, Koh informed the jury to avoid letting prejudice inform its decision. While Koh didn't see the need for yet another trial, she repeatedly referred to the comments as "troubling," saying they "could have been perceived as invoking racial or ethnic prejudice."

The larger iPad's high-res screen is a plus for shooting video, but wielding it can make one look like, dare we say, a dork. One way to overcome that stigma is by shooting with the original Padcaster (pictured above), a metal frame that lets you mount your tablet on a tripod and attach lenses and other accessories. The company has now launched a version for the iPad mini on Kickstarter, which you may prefer for its less bulky size, but equally capable 1080p camera and (optional) Retina screen. Like the last model, the Padcaster Mini consists of a frame with threaded holes for video accessories, a bracket for 72mm and 58mm lens adaptersand a DSLR attachment if better video is needed. That'll let journalists and bloggers broadcast live straight from an iPad, or even use it as a makeshift teleprompter or support to watch TV in bed, for instance. It's now about halfway to its goal, so if you're looking to cast in style from your own mini, you can pledge at the source starting at $99.

Lawmakers in California are so intent on curbing record levels of smartphone theft, they're ready to fine phone makers if anti-theft measures aren't installed on their devices. The New York Times reports that the order will come from State Senator Mark Leno, who is set to introduce a new bill requiring all smartphones and tablets sold in the state to include a "kill switch" solution that would lock down a device if it was stolen. Ignore the ruling and there's a $2,500 fine for each device sold.
San Francisco and New York prosecutors George Gascón and Eric Schneiderman set the ball rolling when they met with representatives from Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft last year. Apple has since won praise for including its Activation Lock feature by default in iOS 7, requiring device owners to set a passcode that stops thieves reactivating a stolen phone (but could be unlocked with a username and password). While it would only officially cover California, the new law could force phone makers into a full US rollout, likely upsetting the carriers. The CTIA, which represents the likes of AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, believes its stolen-phone database is a better solution and will fight the ruling. If it is signed into law, phone makers will have until January 1st, 2015 to implement a solution or they will not pass Go and will be forced to pay out a lot more than $200.

Buddy & Me, the sidescrolling mobile gameabout Falkor The Luck Dragontotally not Falkor The Luck Dragon, is now available on Google Play, according to a news post from developer Sunbreak. The adorable, adorable, adorable mobile game earned high praise from us back when it first released on iOS, and now Android users get to experience what it's like to have the mental walls of cynicism and apathy broken down by stars and singing bunnies.
For those not yet taken in by Buddy's big, lovable grin, here's how the magic happens: you're given two minutes to get as far as you can through a treehouse so large even the wealthiest billionaire's children would gawk at its immensity and wonder. Collecting bunnies adds time to the clock, so the longer you can keep up with the game, the longer the ride will last.
You might even say the story of Buddy & Me is neverending.

This weekend's removal of mobile hit Flappy Bird has already been capitalised on by app store developers looking to fill the game's void - and by people who downloaded the original when it was still available. Fluffy vs. Flappy Birds.
Flappy Bird's disappearance has only encouraged the rise of copycat games, with one clone now having risen to second placein the UK free app charts. But while Fly Birdie - Flappy Bird Flyer bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, the game will charge you £0.69 for every three lives. The original Flappy Bird was entirely free.Another clone, Fluffy vs. Flappy Birds will charge you £1.49 to remove ads, or up to £6.99 for lumps of in-game coins.Other Flappy Bird alternatives currently available include Flappy Plane, Flappy Bee andFlying Flappy Unicorn Bird: The Frozen Sky Fall. And, if you're an Android user, you can download Happy Poo Flap. Happy Poo Flap.
Meanwhile, phones which have Flappy Bird installed are currently being placed on eBay for substantial amounts. In the UK, a 16B iPhone 3GS is being sold for £1000, an iPhone 5S for £650 and an HTC One for £525. Many other options are available, all "with rare Flappy Bird game installed!".Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyendecided to remove his hugely popular appover the weekend after saying he did not want the fame it had brought him - despite it raking in $50,000 a day in ad revenue."I am sorry Flappy Bird users, 22 hours from now, I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore," he wrote on Twitter. "I can call Flappy Bird is a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it."

As reported yesterday, Google's Nexus 7 tablet will finally become available on Verizon Wireless with support for the carrier's LTE network. And it looks like rumors got the date right, too; the 7-inch Android slate will go on sale at Verizon this Thursday, February 13th, with the 32GB model priced at $350. The Nexus 7 will also be available on a two-year contract for $250, though only for a limited time.
If you already own a 2013-edition Nexus 7, you'll be able to access Verizon's LTE network once you've downloaded the latest Android software update. Adding the tablet to your Share Everything plan will cost an extra $10 per month. Google's 7-incher had to undergo a lengthy certification process before gaining support for Verizon's network, so today's announcement is good (if not overdue) news.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company plans to release new products this year.
In an interview with WSJ, Cook said outright that ‘there will be new categories this year’. Commenting that the firm is ‘not ready to talk about it, but we’re working on some really great stuff’.
The tech media have circulated rumours about an Apple iWatch for a while now, but with a number of other smartwatches already on the market, perhaps Apple is looking ahead to something newer.
Another rumour doing the rounds is that Apple will launch its own television, which could come with an integrated Apple TV streaming device.
Judging by Apple’s recent patent spree, the new products could include an iPen stylus, a double-sided touchscreen laptop and a wireless projector PC.

Supercell’s Clash of Clans is certainly showing the established games powerhouses how it’s done.
Business Insider reports that AppData numbers suggest the free-to-play smartphone title is making an astonishing $654,000 a day for the Finnish games firm.
An App Annie report last month revealed that Clash of Clans is currently the world’s third most successful freemium title after GungHo’s Puzzle & Dragons and King’s Candy Crush Saga.
At its height Puzzle & Dragons was reportedly making upwards of $2m per day netting earnings of $65m per month.

Calling a game "addictive" is typically thought of as a compliment. Not so for Dong Nguyen, creator of recently-pulled mobile hit, Flappy Bird. Nguyen told Forbes in a recent interview that the game was too addictive, and that guilt motivated him to remove the game from the iTunes and Google Play stores.
"I think it has become a problem," Nguyen told Forbes. "To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird. It's gone forever." Those pining for the good ol' days of birds flapping freely in the pipe-laden lands of iOS and Android may be out of luck, but Nguyen told Forbes he plans to continue developing games.
He'll also leave his previously-developed titles like Super Ball Juggling andShuriken Block up for purchase, as he considers them "harmless."

The furore around Flappy Bird – a game which just last week was generating $50,000 in ad revenue a day – has taken yet another turn.
No, it isn't back on the App Store or Google Play following creator Dong Nguyen's decision to pull the plug, instead, the Vietnamese developer has been thrown into a twisted internet hoax suggesting he's committed suicide, reportsHollywood Life.
The story goes as follows:
"Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has just been found dead in his home with a gunshot wound in his dead. Authorities are confirming that Nguyen committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Authorities are saying that the sensational game Flappy Bird had something to do with the suicide.
"There has also been 7 reports of other suicides around the U.S. today alone. Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has taken Flappy Bird off app stores this morning and is believed to be the cause of the suicides."
Fans of the game have been seen on Twitter sharing and favouriting the story, while trolls have been throwing abuse and death threats at Nguyen, which is likely where the suicide story originates from.
Since announcing the game's extermination on Twitter, Nguyen has maintained a social media silence despite being inundated with mentions and seeing followers surge to 150,000.

Tablet manufacturer Fuhu has told PCR that ‘no plans have been determined yet’ to bring the DreamWorks Animation kids’ tablet to the UK.
The DreamTab is the first ever tablet from DreamWorks and comes with an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. It will be powered by the latest Intel Atom processor.
When asked how the DreamTab will differ from the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 3 or LeapPad’s kid-friendly offerings Grace Ryu, Fuhu’s public relations manager, explained:“The DreamTab is not a toy tablet with adapted features or a tablet repurposed for kids.
“It is the first tablet brought to kids by world- renowned companies that are the best in the industry – DreamWorks for best in family entertainment, Intel for fast and powerful processing power, and Fuhu for the best in kids’ tech experiences for enriching learning, playing and growing experiences. “DreamTab brings the expertise of all these partners to redefine what a tablet for kids should be, with one-of-a-kind experiences.”
Ryu boasted that the tablet “has what no other tablet for kids has” – access to professional tools and “world-class” talent.
“In the Creativity Island [app], DreamWorks animators lead a video tutorial to teach kids how to draw characters from DreamWorks’ hit movies and shows,” she explained.
The tablet also comes with a Utilities app that teaches kids how to manage their time and events and a feature that educates them on how to use social networking platforms and behave on them in a safe and secure way.
The DreamTab will be available to US consumers this spring and will cost less than $300 (£183).

We're not mathematicians, but we're fairly sure that you can't multiply Life to the power of five. That hasn't stopped Samsung, however, from claiming as much on its latest MWC invite. The company's "back-to-basics" Galaxy S5 is expected to dominate the show, and this is the first official hint of what we can expect. The grid of nine icons are grouped by color, with Speed, Curiosity and Privacy in team blue and Outdoor, Style and Fitness in healthy green -- and yes, all are multiplied to the power of five. It'd be hasty to leap to any conclusions just yet, but perhaps we'll see Samsung beefing up device security in the wake of PRISM and, hopefully, a renewed focus on fitness.

We already have a hard time finding fault with processing power in the mid-range smartphones and tablets currently on the market, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be even snappier. That's the goal of ARM, which has announced the latest Cortex processors, known as Cortex-A17, to address not only mobile devices in the midrange market, but Smart TVs and Over-the-Top devices as well. The 28nm A17 comes with big.LITTLE (the architecture used in Samsung's latest octa-core Exynos chips) support, and promises a 60 percent boost in performance overCortex-A9. It's also paired with a Mali-T720 GPU, which offers OpenGL ES 3.0 support and plenty of optimizations for low-end Android devices. While ARM doesn't specify an actual timeframe for release, it says that we should expect a huge push for the A17 in 2015; in a separate release, MediaTek also tells us that its newest octa-core processor comes with Cortex-A17 tech inside and will be available in the second half of this year.

Booming Clash of Clans developer Supercell plans to release a third game next month called Boom Beach. It's apparently already soft-launched in Canada and Australia, and is a top-five grossing iPhone game in both countries, reported Gamasutra.Supercell announced its intentions during an astonishing annual earnings report. Consider that Supercell began life in 2010 with the help of a loan from the Finnish government, and built Hay Day and Clash of Clans with teams of half-a-dozen each. Now look at the 2012 numbers: $101m revenue, $51m operating income (Financial Times). And then look at the 2013 numbers: $689m GAAP revenue, $322m EBITA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation), according to Gamasutra."You need to create a game that people play for years"
Illka Paananen
You could buy a house with an on-site horse for that kind of money!Apparently a hacker revealed earlier this week that Supercell was raking in more than $5m a day. How? Micro-transactions of course; time-saving, progress-boosting payouts surrounding every aspect of what Dan Whitehead called a "tissue thin" game, in Clash of Clans' case. How is it that Supercell is so successful? "It is both simple and incredibly hard," explained CEO and co-founder Illka Paananen, reported the Financial Times. "You need to create a fun game. You need to create a game that people play for years, not months, and those people have to play a lot." He did later say that "I don't think you should devote your life to playing games".On the topic of some players spending a fortune on the game, he added (via Gamasutra): "It's no secret that some players spend substantial amounts of money on these games. But I wouldn't say the vast majority of revenue comes from them. These people usually come from an investment banker or lawyer background, and they spend a lot of money on golf courses and so on. I've asked them, 'Why do you spend so much money on these games?' And they say, 'People spend money on golf, I spend money on Clash of Clans.'"Supercell announced itself with a bang last year by selling - for $1.5bn - just over half of the company to Japanese Puzzle & Dragons maker GungHo. That meant Supercell was valued at $3bn.GungHo, incidentally, raked in revenues of $1.6bn and operating profits of $900m in 2013.Someone's doing well, aren't they?

American pop punk quartet Fallout Boy will release their own version of mobile hit Flappy Bird, the band has announced.
It'll be called Fall Out Bird (yes, really) and will be launched later this week for iOS and Android devices."Rome wasn't built in a day, but this game was," Fall Out Boy wrote on the group'sofficial site (thanks, BBC). "We bring you Fall Out Bird. Coming this week to Google Play and The App Store (as soon it's approved)."Shoutout to the OG Flappy Bird, RIP."Can't wait until then? Super Hexagon developer Terry Cavanagh has released a free web-based Flappy Bird tribute named Maverick Bird. It's available to play now via Cavanagh'sofficial website. The original Flappy Bird disappeared from the iOS and Android app stores last weekend after the creator decided it had become too popular. If sources who spoke with Bloomberg News are correct, a new Apple TV could be "introduced" as early as April. Apple is currently in talks with Time Warner Cable, among other programming partners, to add video content to the set-top box before releasing the next version.
The third-generation Apple TV came out just over a year ago, and while it's received software updates, both the design and selection of content haven't changed much since the original launched in 2007. Bloomberg's sources echo earlier rumors, saying the next-gen model could include a reworked interface that allows for easier navigation between different types of content. Naturally, there will also be a faster processor in Cupertino's fourth set-top box. Just don't get too set on that spring timeframe; though Apple may unveil the new product in April, sources say the release would coincide with the holiday season, depending on the company's progress in securing partnerships with TWC and others.

Yes, Windows Phones are finally keeping up with the Joneses. Thanks to the latest update, smartphones running Microsoft's mobile OS can now have top-of-the-line components. We got a good taste of how this feels with the Nokia Lumia 1520(spoiler: It's pretty dang good), but most people would prefer flagship specs in a smaller phone. Enter the Lumia Icon, a loaded 5-inch WP8 device exclusive to Verizon that goes on sale in black and white colors February 20th for $200 with a two-year contract. (It'll cost $550 at full retail or Edge pricing.)
The Icon comes with nearly all the same specs as the Lumia 1520: a 1080p display, 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 20-megapixel PureView rear camera (with optical image stabilization, a 1.2MP front-facing webcam, a Gorilla Glass 3 screen, Qi wireless charging, NFC, dual-band WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0 + LE. Unsurprisingly, the 2,420mAh battery is smaller, and we hope it can efficiently manage the high-def screen and quad-core processor without a huge drain to the battery.
Aside from the battery and smaller screen, the Icon is an exclusive to Verizon, as evidenced by the three carrier-specific logos on the front and back. And while we wouldn't be surprised to see a 5-inch 1080p Lumia device hit the rest of the market at some point, it probably won't look like the Icon. The phone sports straight aluminum sides and a curved back fashioned out of matte polycarbonate. In many ways, the setup reminds us of the Lumia 925, which features rounded metal sides and the same plastic back; the Icon is 0.5mm thicker, but it also doesn't have a distracting camera hump like the 925 has. We'll offer more impressions below, but not before showing off a gallery of images and a brief walk-through video.

Samsung isn't going to make a big song-and-dance when it finally reveals its next flagship smartphone, at least not literally. When it announced last year's Galaxy S 4, the company put on a pretty grand show in New York. However, that isn't to say the current darling of Android is keeping everything a secret when it comes to theGalaxy S 5. In fact, the company has shared a surprising amount about what to expect, without us even getting close to the rumor mill. And, because Samsung makes the majority of its smartphone components in-house (processor, screen and battery) many of these announcements are made from the sidelines, months in advance, then not-so-miraculously appear (eventually) in the company's mobile devices.Last year's Samsung flagship didn't scream that it was truly a new phone in its own right ... something that Samsung's Mobile EVP, Lee Young Hee even admitted.
Broadly, Samsung's said that it's had a "back to basics" rethink on its next smartphone -- a good idea given that the GS 4 really didn't fall far from the Galaxy S tree. Slimmer, faster and sharper are all good, but last year's flagship didn't scream that it was truly a new phone in its own right. It's even something that Samsung's Mobile EVP Lee Young Hee, admitted in an interview withBloomberg. "It's partly true that consumers couldn't really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective." With this year's model, she added, "mostly it's about the display and the feel of the cover." So that's the front and back, right? At its most asinine, it could simply mean the GS 5 will pillage the faux leather effect that's now the standard on both Samsung Android tablets and its Note 3 series. Samsung's already transplanted the look to a limited-runGalaxy S 4, but it's the mention of changes to the screen that's got us a little more enthused than last year.

Jeffrey Stephenson has long had a knack for giving PCs an elegant retro look, and he's now bringing his crafting skills to the mobile realm. His recently completedDuMont project turns an iPad mini, a Jawbone Jambox and a heap of wood into a tiny 1950s TV set, complete with a woven speaker grille; the owner just has to slot devices into the enclosure's side to indulge in some nostalgic viewing. Stephenson isn't officially selling the box, but he is taking inquiries from those who want a tablet TV of their own. If you're wondering how he did it, you can visit Bit-Tech'sforums to check out the project work log.

Even though the VAIO Flip 15 and 13 are both pretty solid PCs, some people might find one to be too big and the other too expensive. To alleviate this, Sony introduced the VAIO Flip 11A, an 11.6-inch laptop with the same Yoga-like designas the other, larger Flips. Available now for $799, Sony' newest convertible ships with Windows 8.1 and is powered by Intel's 2.16GHz Pentium N3520 CPU. What's more, there is also that included copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 12, a 1,920 x 1,080 IPS screen, NFC support and 128GB of solid-state storage alongside 4GB RAM. It appears Sony is only selling its Flip 11A in the US at this time; that said, let us know in the comments if you see it up for grabs elsewhere. Or maybe it's all part of the company's new business plan.

We hope you're ready for a rather interesting month for smartphones. Judging from the teasers, announcements and leaks, nearly all the major mobile players have something big to show in Barcelona next week. What you're looking at above is HTC's own next big thing, a new flagship smartphone that's doing the rumor rounds under the codename of M8. Looks familiar, right? However, there's already some notable changes, including an increase to three Android buttons, which are all now part of the screen. Having said that, according to mob.hr's leak, a bar with HTC branding means the screen will still takes up the same proportion of the phone's surface. Thankfully, the M8 appears to be made of metal just like last year's One, with the same micro-drilled holes for the speakers. According to this leak, expect a flip-top cover to go along with it too -- presumably with peep-holesfor both of those rear-facing cameras.

New rumours surface about the anticipated devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to be revealed at MWC 2014, sporting an eye scanner to rival the fingerprint scanner found on the iPhone 5S.
Meanwhile, Tim Cook has dodged questions about whether Apple phablets are on the way, meaning an iPhone 6 could potentially arrive with a five-inch screen. Either way, you can expect "great things."
The one thing the two devices will supposedly have in common, however, is a lack of buttons, according to the Korea Herald.
The bezel-free approach is supposedly because the rival firms want to concentrate their efforts on fingerprint scanners.
A source claims: "The finger-scanning technology will be available on the bottom left and right sides, and not the entire display. Scanning fingerprints on the entire screen, which was much talked about recently, will be available in the latter half of this year as there are still technological hurdles to overcome."
Additionally, the S5 is expected to come with enhanced touchscreen sensitivity to enable gloved use, while the devices are expected to be slimmer, with fingerprint sensors offering health benefits to check pulses.
The latter feature would be in keeping with Samsung's S-Health service, which encourages users to track their fitness and wellbeing. The firm recently invested $7 million in diabetes tech, which we reported as part of ME Fitness Month.

iAddict: Once an iPhone user, always an iPhone user.
Three fifths of UK iPhone users would always choose a newer iPhone model when upgrading their device without even comparing what is on the market, reports SIMOnlyContracts.co.uk.
54 per cent of iPhone owners asked revealed that they had owned an earlier version of the handset as well.
17 per cent said that they owned a BlackBerry before turning to the iSide, 14 per cent had a Nokia, nine per cent Samsung, four per cent HTC and Sony Ericsson bringing up the rear with two per cent.
Of the 2,275 people aged 18 and over who said that they own an iPhone, only nine per cent stayed old school with an iPhone 3/3GS, 10 per cent had a 5C or 5S, 29 per cent owned an iPhone 4/4S and 52 per cent had an iPhone 5.
Roshan Bholah, founder of SIMOnlyContracts.co.uk, said: “It’s really interesting to discover this blind loyalty amongst iPhone users – they’ll no longer consider other mobile phones on the market, purely because they trust Apple and perhaps like being associated with the brand.”
37 per cent said that they stuck with Apple due to the fact that they were used to the interface, 28 per cent said they thought it was just the best phone available, and 25 per cent were influence by friends or family.
Bholah continued: “The old saying, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ could ring true here, as it’s clearly a case of them having a positive experience with the handset. It’s ultimately the loyalty all brands hope to achieve with their customers – old and new.”

Listings for phones and tablets carrying the now-deleted Flappy Bird have been pulled from auction site eBay.
The Guardian reports that users who had listed such items are being told that they violated the site’s T&C’s.
“Smartphones and tablets must be restored to factory settings before they are allowed to be sold on eBay,” an email to sellers reads. “Please remove all content from your device, including the game Flappy Bird, before you attempt to list your item again.
“Please be sure your current and future listings follow these guidelines, keeping in mind that additional listing violations could result in the suspension of your account.
“We have credited all associated fees except for the final value fee for your listing(s).”

Emerging markets the biggest driver of smartphone dominance.
Global sales of smartphones totaled on 968 million last year, which was an increase of 42.3 per cent from 2012, reports Gartner.
This equated to smartphones owning 53.6 per cent of the total market, surpassing feature phones for the first time.
The fourth quarter of 2013 saw smartphone sales grow 36 per cent increasing to 57.6 per cent of overall sales – up from 44 per cent year-on-year.
This drive in sales was led by emerging markets such as Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, Asia/Pacific and Eastern Europe, where it grew by over 50 per cent in Q4 2013.
India however made the biggest impact with a 166.8 per cent increase in the fourth quarter – China also contributed a significant part to the market with a 86.3 per cent growth in 2013.
Upstream predicted in December last year, that these emerging markets would increase ad revenue by 70 per cent in 2014, however if sales continue to grow at such a rate, we could see that figure surge.
Concerning devices, Samsung sat comfortably at the top of table with a 31.0 per cent share of the market, followed by Apple with 15.6 per cent.
Huawei and LG shared third with 4.8 per cent a piece and Lenovo answered for 4.5 per cent share.
Android is rapidly on its way to hitting one billion sales this year – as it claims the top spot in global OS use with a 78.4 per cent share, and obviously – even if a long way off - iOS at second with 15.6 per cent.
Microsoft came next with 3.2 per cent and BlackBerry with 1.9 per cent

Pictures of what is supposedly the next generation iPhone have been released.
It’s Apple rumour time again, this time for the iPhone 6.
The images were published by blogger, Sonny Dickenson displaying what he says is the new iPhone’s rear casing.
It shows the recognizable camera lens and obviously Apple logo – however the alleged new device has a rounded back, and is considerably thinner than the iPhone 4 and 5 models.
Another image released on Twitter by @mornray886 shows a larger screen and Touch ID found of the iPhone 5S.
Sonny Dickenson has previously leaked images of the Galaxy Note 3 as well as Apple’s iPhone 5C – so he may well be onto something here.
Apple has been at the brunt of many rumours, some true some not so much - such as the iPhone wrapped display design which, even if it looked cool, probably wont come into fruition.
Take a look at the pictures below and see what you think.

CBeebies Playtime has been played more than 22 million times in the last three months.
The BBC - who recently adopted WIndows Phone to connect with children - is celebrating its CBeebies Playtime app reaching two million downloads in less than six months by launching a new game.
Andy’s Dinosaur Adventure will be available on an update for the app which has currently been played over 22 million times, at an average nine minutes per play.
That is a total of more than 198 million minutes of CBeebies Playtime played little ones across the UK.
Christmas caused a 300,000 surge in downloads for BBC’s app, with 46,000 downloads on Christmas day alone.
Between launch and Xmas day, 56 per cent of kids used the app in a tablet compared to 44 per cent on mobile – from Xmas onwards players on tablets rose to 62 per cent and 38 per cent on mobile.
The new game, Andy’s Dinosaur Adventure takes children back in time to join Andy. Users get to take care of their own dino, learning what food it likes to eat, teaching it to roar, personalise it with new colours and take photos to share with friends and family.
The update is available now.

Smartwatch vendor Pebble is apparently working on a new product that will "absolutely batter" Apple's rumoured iWatch device.
A senior source close to Pebble told PCR the unannounced device is set to launch in around six months or longer.
"I feel sorry for Apple, because what Pebble are doing will absolutely batter the iWatch," the source said.
"They're doing things much greater than their steel smartwatch. It's magical, magical stuff. It will hit the market in around six months' time or so."
Pebble revealed the Pebble Steel – a steel smartwatch device – at tech trade show CES in Las Vegas earlier this year.
The company originally made the headlines back in April 2012 after its Pebble smartwatch received significant backing on crowdfunding website Kickstarter.

Nokia is preparing to release its first Android phone, as the lost market share in emerging markets from the death of Symbian has never been recovered. Windows Phone could never be adapted to the entry level devices that have driven growth in these markets, necessitating the move. From the article, 'Nokia was once the king of cellphones in emerging markets. But it has lost ground because it was slow to respond to Android's popularity in many countries. In India, where Nokia's Symbian-powered phones held a big share of cellphone sales just a few years ago, Android was installed on 93% of new smartphones shipped there last year, according to estimates from research firm IDC.

The next entry in the Hitman series will venture into the mobile space as a new strategy offering, Square Enix has announced.
Developed by a "small core team" at Square Enix Montreal, Hitman GO stands apart from the AAA action-adventure stealth franchise "while still [retaining] the essence of what a Hitman game is." The game will entirely turn-based and utilize diorama-style areas to navigate through.
"You will strategically navigate fixed spaces on a grid to avoid enemies and take out your target or infiltrate well-guarded locations," the official description reads.
"You really have to think about each move and all the Hitman tools of the trade you would expect are included; disguises, distractions, sniper rifles and even 47's iconic Silverballers."
No release date was mentioned for Hitman GO, but the developer states it's "almost ready for launch" on both smartphones and tablets.
Hitman franchise developer IO Interactive is still working on the next major installment in the series as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story Director Yasumi Matsuno's episodictactical-strategy game Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians has been successfully funded through Kickstarter. The Kickstarter campaign earnedUnsung Story developer Playdek a total of $660,126.
While the successful funding ensures Unsung Story will release for PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android in 2015, the campaign failed to reach the $1 million goal necessary for a PS Vita port, let alone the more expensive milestones needed for ports on PS4 and 3DS.
Prior to Unsung Story's launch in 2015, Playdek plans to release two digital card games set within the Unsung Story universe. The developer is also exploring the idea of cross-platform play in Unsung Story, but Playdek has yet to confirm the feature for any platform.

Arguably the best deal on an Ouya we've seen in a while has surfaced over on digital commerce site Stack Social. You can grab an Ouya console, controller and a $25 credit towards games right now, all for $85.
Sorry, this deal is only available to folks in the continental United States. Also, this is the 8GB console, not the new 16GB console Ouya revealed last month. This sale ends in 12 days and price includes shipping.
Need some ideas for what to spend that $25 on? Towefall is a strong candidate, as is Double Fine's The Cave and free-to-play roguelike Soul Fjord. There areover 500 games in total to choose from.
The Ouya is an Android-powered games console whose marketplace is characterized by having free demos of every game offered there. Ouya ships with the latest updated firmware, which was introduced late last year and augments much of the Ouya's user interface.

So what if you don't know jack? As long as you know words - and how to spell them - you'll do fine in Jackbox Games' new puzzler, Word Puttz. The free-to-play game, now available on iOS and Android, puts a spin on classic word games such as Scrabble and Words With Friends by having players place letter tiles not on a board, but a mini-golf course.
Think of your words as both a way to score points and the route your ball will travel. You want to make good, high-value words, but also need to eventually wind up at the hole. Obstacles, pre-placed words and races against the AI add variety to the game's four courses, which feature more than 70 levels total.
Oh yeah, and the in-game host is an octopus. Because reasons.

Spokesperson claims fees for previously free items were 'part of a small-scale test'
EA PopCap briefly implemented new in-app purchases into its popular free-to-play mobile game Plants Vs Zombies 2 this week before quickly pulling them after angry player feedback.
Lawnmowers, which are used as the last line of defence against zombie attacks in the tower defence game, previously respawned after each level for free of charge. But following a recent update, users were instead asked to purchase replacements for 2,000 coins worth of in-game currency, even after failing or completing a level.
One Reddit user claimed the developer had "fundamentally changed a core mechanic of the game in order to make you pay more".
Following angry feedback, the newly added microtransaction was quickly removed from the game in a subsequent patch.
In a statement to ArsTechnica, a PopCap spokesperson claimed the addition of an extra IAP to a core game mechanic was part of a "small-scale test".
"We are always testing new features in Plants vs. Zombies 2," read a statement from the developer.
"The lawnmower feature noted by some players was part of a small-scale test and is now over."
The latest controversy over in-app purchases comes shortly after EA recently got in hot water over Mythic's use of microtransactions in free-to-play title Dungeon Keeper, which developers and players alike have accused of being too aggressive.

One of Android's biggest draws is its roots in open source. It enables a broad range of device manufacturers to work from the same code base, and provides app developers with more insight into the platform they're building on. But openness isn't a binary condition — there are many shades of gray. While Android is technically very open, from a practical standpoint it's much more difficult for device makers to distance themselves from Google, if that's their preference. 'Phone manufacturers and carriers that want to use Google's services must conform to Google's device standards, a stricter requirement than what basic AOSP requires. For some, this is a catch. For others, it's merely the cost of doing business. ... [Dianne Hackborn, one of Android's tech leads,] defends Google's right to include proprietary services, and to keep them proprietary, saying that its no different than any other proprietary app on Android. That's not entirely true, since Google does keep some API development to itself, but to its credit the company does open-source most of the new APIs introduced to Android.'

Starting February 23rd, T-Mobile is allowing Jump customers to upgrade their smartphone or tablet whenever they want, rather than just twice a year. There's just one (gigantic) catch: your device has to be at least halfway paid off before you make the switch. Currently, Jump customers can get the phone of their choice for zero money down, and pay off the full price of the device over the course of two years. If you get a new phone every six months (as Jump currently allows), you would have only paid off a quarter of the device when you make the swap. While the new policy lets you upgrade more often, if you're making a change earlier than a year in you're going to have to pay a bit out of pocket.
The idea brings Jump more on par with Verizon's Edge program, which also requires you to have your device halfway paid off to upgrade, and AT&T's Next program that offers upgrades once a year. Requiring 12 months of payments on a device minimizes the loss on these plans for carriers and puts the extra financial burden on the hard-core enthusiasts who want to upgrade faster than the traditional one-year lifecycle of most flagship devices. Existing Jump users can stick with their current plans, and can continue to upgrade every six months.

The Deadly Six have been pestering Sonic since the release of Sonic: Lost World, but his old rivals haven't forgotten their hatred for the blue blur. Dr. Eggman serves as Sonic's latest opposition in Dr. Eggman Invasion, a new challenge for the mobile endless runner Sonic Dash. Thankfully, Eggman is ready to conveniently time attacks and place traps so that agile players can guide Sonic to victory.
In Sonic Dash's winding pathways, players eventually reach bumpers that propel them into the air. These serve as an opportunity to "bank" rings so that they can't be lost by running into an enemy or obstacle. Eggman appears during one of these aerial moments, and messing up his fancy flying chair will grant a nice boost to a player's score.
Sonic Dash is free to play, so as long as you're cool with advertisements and microtransaction popups, you can take on Eggman on iOS or Android devices.

Apple and Google have finally begun to stem the tidal wave of Flappy Bird clones saturating app stores, developers report.App creators have taken to Twitter after finding out that their own versions of Flappy Bird have been rejected.
Apple has begun blocking Flappy Bird-style submissions under the grounds that they "leverage a popular app", while Google is labelling Flappy clones simply as "spam".The apparent policy change does not appear to have affected games already live on app stores - which include titles such as Flappy Fish, Flappy Wings, Flippy Flappy Bird, Floppy Bird and the current top-rated game Fly Birdie - Flappy Bird Flyer."This is just not my f***ing week," mobile developer Ken Carpenter ranted after his app Flappy Dragon was "rejected" (thanks,TechCrunch)."We found your app name attempts to leverage a popular app," he was told by Apple. "Which app?" he replied, "Flappy Bird doesn't exist!?!?!"The developer similarly fell foul upon submitting Flappy Dragon to Google Play."There was no 'Fair Warning' email, which Google claims to send before taking such actions," Carpenter continued. "I checked and rechecked my spam folder to be sure. They just arbitrarily removed the app with no warning."The message they sent me simply referenced the 'spam' provision of the Google Play terms and did not specifically call out what my transgression was."Another developer claimed that his own App Store attempt, the Lovecraftian-themed FlapThulhu: Flappy Madness, was also blocked. Several others have also met the same fate.Eurogamer investigated the sudden spike of Flappy Bird clones last week - and some of the developers who are looking to cash in quick on the phenomenon.Apple and Google's decision to block Flappy Bird clones marks a rare intervention from the companies, who have typically always turned a blind eye to games which don't explicitly break copyright. We've contacted both again this morning to find out what prompted the change.

According to the latest IDC figures provided to Engadget, Samsung continued to perform well in Greater China -- as in mainland China and Taiwan combined -- in terms of smartphone shipments. In mainland China last quarter, the Korean giant topped the chart with a 19 percent market share, followed by Lenovo at 13 percent and Coolpad at 11 percent. IDC's Senior Research Manager Melissa Chau pointed out that compared to a year ago, the top three vendors remained in the same positions, but ZTE has since slipped from fourth place to out of top five, thus letting Huawei and Apple move up one place. Chau added that Apple's shipment was also boosted by the full rollout of the iPhone 5s and 5c to its other channels in China since late Q3.
While Xiaomi is nowhere to be seen in mainland China's top five, it's managed to nab 3 percent of the Taiwanese market to secure fifth place last quarter. This is no doubt thanks to the recent launch of the Redmi, aka Hongmi, budget phone there, with help from local carrier Far EasTone. But Chau cautioned that it's still early days for Xiaomi, for it "just barely edged out LG" in Taiwan, plus it's a long way behind HTC in fourth place. What's more worrying is that Acer isn't even in the top six in its hometown, which is just one of the many signs showing how it desperately needed the restructuring.
With the full rollout of TD-LTE plus Lenovo bringing Motorola back into mainland China, it'll be interesting to see how the landscape changes again a year from now.

We ask a number of developers about the game's success and what they can learn from Nguyen's reaction
Just last week, Vietnamese games developer Dong Nguyen pulled his mobile sensation Flappy Bird from both Android and iOS stores. While Nguyen later said he was worried about how addictive his game had become, he clearly had had enough of the vitriol and abuse being thrown his way from gamers around the world. The fame was ruining his life and he was overwhelmed. Flappy Bird likely hadn't even reached the height of its popularity yet, and the game was already banking $50,000 a day on ad revenues. Even so, you can't put a price on sanity, asJeff Vogel points out.
In light of Nguyen's decision to remove Flappy Bird and seeing how he and other developers in the past have been crushed by a toxic internet environment, GamesIndustry International polled a number of mobile devs about the game's rise to fame and what they could learn from the whole situation. Here's how the panel responded...
GI: Considering how unremarkable a game Flappy Bird is, why do you think it became such a smash hit?
"I would argue that the experience of playing a game can be far better or worse than a list of features would suggest. Just because on paper the game is unremarkable doesn't mean that users don't find the experience remarkable. Simply put it's incredibly addictive in a way that can't be explained on paper but has to be experienced to understand." - Jeremy Rossmann, CEO, MakeGamesWithUs
"It's a great example of a viral breakout. Once it reached critical mass, everyone had to play it, because everyone else was playing it. It's also insanely difficult, which 1) differentiates from typical mainstream entertainment and 2) makes you more likely to share your achievements when you reach a good score." - Petri Järvilehto, co-founder and CCO, Seriously
"I think having people around you, that support what you do is important. They can talk you down from that emotional ledge"
Dustin Hendricks
"In our opinion, the features of the game that support this are 1) under 3MB download - the game downloads instantly even over crappy networks; 2) You are playing 3 seconds from clicking the icon - the game starts immediately and no matter how little time you have, you have enough to play a round or two; 3) Even a super successful session is only a few minutes long; 4) It seems that you should be able to play much better, which leads you to try again and again and again; 5) One number tells how epic you are - just say you got 200 in Flappy Bird and everyone knows that it's impressive. From the game discovery side, Twitter seem to have played a strong role in Flappy's viral rise with people suddenly competing to complain how the game had ruined their life. Even the App Store reviews seemed to spawn a competition in creating the longest, most verbal rant about how awful their life has become with Flappy Bird addiction. The rants always ended up giving the game a 5-star review." - Teemu Mäki-Patola, COO/CMO, Frogmind
"There's no formula for what makes games into hits. Imagine if we did: every game would be the same - how tragic! That being said: there was probably a better way to handle his 'too addictive' problem than pull the game entirely. This sort of 'parenting' seems a bit melodramatic. It's either the worst decision of his life, or the best marketing campaign ever. Think about it: when a parent takes candy away from a baby, what does the baby want even more?" - Stephen Varga, COO and co-founder, ByteSized Studios

The Apple rumor mill is alive and well. This time around the tech giant is rumored to be looking into exploring medical sensor technology related to predicting heart attacks, and might even buy Tesla. 'Taken together, Apple's potential forays into automobiles and medical devices, two industries worlds away from consumer electronics, underscore the company's deep desire to move away from iPhones and iPads and take big risks. "Apple must increasingly rely on new products to reignite growth beyond the vision" of late founder Steve Jobs, said Bill Kreher, an analyst with Edward Jones Investments in St. Louis. "They need the next big thing.

The International Game Developers Association has issued a statement opposing King's recent Candy Crush Saga trademark filing, criticizing the developer's "predatory" attempt at owning and controlling the words "candy" and "saga" across all gaming platforms.
The organization plans to leverage its Business and Legal Special Interest Group to investigate the filing. King's "candy" trademark was recently approvedfor publishing by the US Patent and Trademark Office, giving developers and organizations 30 days to oppose the mark's final publication.
"While we understand and respect the appropriate exercise of Trademark rights," IGDA executive director Kate Edwards said. "King's overreaching filing in its application for the Trademark for its game 'Candy Crush Saga,' and its predatory efforts to apply that mark to each separate word contained in that name, are in opposition to the values of openness and cooperation we support industry wide, and directly contradict the statement King's CEO, Riccardo Zacconi, made on January 27th."
Edwards continued: "Our Business and Legal Special Interest Group will be providing a more comprehensive analysis of this issue from its perspective soon."
King targeted indie developer Stoic Studio last year, claiming that its title The Banner Saga was "confusingly and deceptively similar to [King's] previously used Saga marks." King relented in the following months, stating that it "has not and is not trying to stop Banner Saga from using its name."

Attention hungry iOS Threes addicts and sad Android users: You, too, can playThrees all day long with the browser game, designed specifically for those who want to spend hours avoiding actual work (or those who forgot their spectacles at home). Seriously, only open this game if you're OK with not doing anything productive the rest of the day.
You already opened it? Oh, man. We warned you.
Threes comes from artist Greg Wohlwend and designer Asher Vollmer, and it's a brilliantly simple premise: On a four-by-four grid, slide numbers together to create larger numbers, all divisible by three. One and two make three, three and three make six, six and six make twelve, and up from there, squishing together the same, three-based numbers to achieve the high score.
The Threes browser game doesn't include the amiable chatter and unique personalities of each number featured in the iOS version, but it has the option to play the game's music. The big version comes from Angela Li,@angelaconstance on Twitter, and it's been approved by Wohlwend and Vollmer.
"We're really flattered that a fan would take the time to put Threes in the browser like this," Wohlwend tells Joystiq. "It's a fan-made, free game that doesn't try to profit from our hard work on Threes. We're currently trying our hardest to stay focused on the next update as well as on porting to Android. While the obvious feelings of 'uh-oh, people really want to play Threeseverywhere' kind of permeate our thoughts more and more, and it's hard to focus on what we need to because of that, we feel this homage was done with the right kind of heart."

Apple is expected to release two new phones in 2014, and one of them is reportedly not going to be known as an iPhone.
According to Mac Otakara there will be a 4.7-inch iPhone featuring the tradition Gorilla Glass as well as a 5.6-inch phone featuring a sapphire screen which will not carry the brand name.
The 4.7-inch smartphone will most likely be the iPhone 6, which is rumoured to come with a 10MP camera and be thinner and lighter than Apple’s current flagship, the iPhone 5S.
The iPhone 6 is expected to be unveiled in the same September-October timeframe as past iPhones.

Nokia has announced Treasure Tags – small accessories which let owners keep track of their treasured items.
The match box-sized devices are paired with a phone using NFC or Bluetooth, and then can be strapped onto items such as keys, bags and wallets.
When the paired phone and tag become too far apart, an alert noise will sound to let the owner know they’re leaving something behind.
Should they be unable to find the missing item, the tag can be tracked using a map. Each tag’s battery lasts for six months, allowing plenty of time to frantically search behind sofas and in coat pockets.
Up to four tags per phone are supported, and can be identified with different icons or photos. Tags can also be deactivated, if necessary.

Mojang has promised some significant new functionality for the mobile version of its hit title.
Minecraft Pocket Edition will soon be updated to offer larger-scale worlds more in line with what users of the PC and console versions are accustomed to.
“We’re working on restructuring a lot of code to allow significantly bigger worlds in future updates,” business developer Daniel Kaplan said on the studio’s blog. “We’re also updating the AI, inventory, and a bunch of other things. Unfortunately we don’t have a release date yet, but so far, everything is going to plan.”
It was also revealed that Mojang is “pausing” access to the Pocket Realms beta. That’s a service that allows users to create permanent worlds on private servers.
“The Realms team is currently focused on the upcoming release of PC Realms,” he added. “Once that’s done, we’ll be in a better place to work on Pocket Realms and make it as good as it possibly can be, which will be later this year.
“We’re not sure how long the service will be down for, but we’ll update you as soon as normal service resumes.”
All current Pocket Realms content will be saved.

Windows Phone users have been waiting years to have all their notifications in one convenient place, and over the past few months, there have been multiple reportsthat a notification center will come with WP 8.1. Today, a video showed up onUnleash the Phones that appears to confirm those earlier rumors. The feature apparently will be called Action Center, and packs many of the same capabilities that Android and iOS users have enjoyed for some time now -- namely app and system notifications available via a swipe down from the top of the screen.
Additionally, users get quick access to four shortcut buttons for often toggled settings (WiFi, Bluetooth, screen brightness, etc.). The best part is, those shortcuts can be tailored to users' preferences, unlike the set-in-stone settings toggles in Android and iOS. Oh, and speaking of WiFi settings, the folks at Windows Phone Central revealed that 8.1 will also allow users to switch it off for a set amount of time, after which WiFi will turn back on automatically. We aren't sure exactly how such capability benefits users, but we're sure you fine folks will figure it out, assuming it's still around when WP 8.1 rolls out to the public.

After seven years of hosting the iTunes Festival in the UK, Apple is at last bringing the concert series to the US for 2014. The music extravaganza will be held in Austin from March 11th through the 15th, running alongside South by Southwest(SXSW). It's a much shorter run than in the past, but it will include a mix of well-known American and European artists, ranging from Willie Nelson to London Grammar. As you'd imagine, Apple is using the event as a technological showcase; you'll get to stream live and on-demand performances from both iTunes on the desktop as well as any iOS device. This will all sound familiar to Brits, but it's big news for Americans that no longer have to skip work just to watch the live shows -- even if they can't make it out to Texas.

Canonical is finally poised to enter the mobile market. After years of teases, promises and demos, the company has locked up the first two manufacturers of Ubuntu phones. Meizu and BQ Readers will be releasing handsets with the Linux-based OS installed on them sometime in 2014. Details about release date, price and specs are still to be determined, but we were told to expect more info at Mobile World Congress (which kicks off this weekend). The list of supporting carriers also remains a mystery, but at least we know that there will be consumer-ready Ubuntu phones on the market before the end of the year. Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical's founder, is keeping things close to his chest, but he did say that two more manufacturers with "household names" should be coming on board in 2015.
The bad news is that neither of these manufacturers has a large presence in US, so the chances of picking up a high-end Ubuntu phone on Verizon in 2014 is pretty slim. But Meizu is well established in China and should help the fledgling OS build visibility, while BQ Readers has a presence in Spain. Shuttleworth said that part of the reason these two particular companies were chosen was because of their "tactical" method for delivering handsets to specific markets with carefully targeted features and specs.
The next big challenge will be luring developers to the ecosystem. Shuttleworth aims to have the top 50 mobile apps on Ubuntu by the end of the year, which is a noble, but ambitious goal. Right now, big names Evernote, LastPass and Grooveshark are already enlisted, but there's still a lot of work to do. Presumably Canonical still has a few cards up its sleeve for MWC, so stay tuned.

Sure, the Tizen Association just welcomed new members, but the mobile platform is still having a tough start overall -- a Japanese carrier even canceled a Tizen smartphone release in January. So, Samsung (the platform's biggest backer) is reportedly taking matters into its own hands and loading Tizen on one of its upcoming devices: Galaxy Gear 2.0. According to USA Today's sources, the South Korean company is slated to launch an updated smartwatch running the HTML 5-based Tizen OS at the Mobile World Congress a few days from now.
Samsung is reportedly dropping Android in favor of the fledgling platform due to a number of reasons, including its hopes to gain greater control (and revenue) from associated software and services. Also, the company's apparently concerned that the Android flavor Google's developing for wearables may not be as open as the other versions. Whatever Samsung's reasons are, we just hope the new Gear has a longer list of compatible devices than its predecessor does.

Don LaFontaine: In a world where everything can connect to the Internet, one thing stands in the way of always-on communications: roaming charges.
When your car, watch or blood sugar monitor is constantly transferring data to and from the cloud, you have to be concerned with where you go. These sorts of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications (sometimes obnoxiously referred to as "the internet of things") bring convenience but also their own set of unique problems. T-Mobile's eSIM addresses at least one (extremely narrow) sliver of those issues by eliminating roaming costs when moving between the US and Canada. The carrier gives the example of a trucking company that could easily rack up $2,400 in roaming charges per-year, per-truck thanks to navigation, email, tracking software and vehicle diagnostics. By building eSIM into its systems, even a company with a relatively small fleet of big rigs could save hundreds of thousands a year. Obviously though, that's just the start. Future medical implants that keep doctors abreast of changes in a blood sugar or pressure could also rack up steep roaming fees if the patient is a frequent traveler.
T-Mobile is making eSIM available to businesses today and it's compatible with "multiple international carriers" right out of the box. While wandering between the US and Canada certainly limits its appeal at the moment, support in other countries will be announced over the course of the year.

Some of Samsung's Galaxy devices are already getting Android 4.4.2, but today we found out exactly which ones in the US will get a taste of KitKat. The full list is a mouthful. The Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III mini, Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S 4 mini, Galaxy S 4 Active, Galaxy S 4 zoom, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy Light, Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, and Galaxy Tab 3 are all on the waiting list.
Sadly, even though part of Google's goal with KitKat was to bring a refined Android experience to "the next billion people," slightly older hardware like the Galaxy S II are conspicuously absent from the list. Samsung says the updates have already started trickling out, though it didn't mention which device (or devices) were at the head of the line. How quickly you get the update depends on what you have and how quickly your carrier can get it certified. So, just take a deep breath and keep an eye on Samsung's MWC announcements in the meantime.

Folks excited to buy a Galaxy S5 so they can authenticate with their eyeballs and feel like Ethan Hunt might be in for a disappointment. According to Sammobile, Samsung's upcoming flagship will come with a fingerprint sensor -- one that's embedded on the home button à la iPhone 5S. If this report is true, however, that's about the extent of the scanners' similarities, as S5's is supposed to be markedly different and more sophisticated.
Users reportedly need to swipe their finger from base to tip across the button (their print will appear on the screen as they swipe), and authentication will fail if their hands are wet. The phone can store up to eight fingerprints for different purposes, such as to launch particular apps or verify their Samsung accounts. Some of these stored fingerprints can also be used to access two new features called Personal Folder and Private Mode, where users can keep apps, widgets and files for their eyes only. We obviously won't know for sure until Samsung launches the Galaxy S5: thankfully, we might only have to wait a few more days to find out if any of these claims are even close to being real.

After discovering a huge security hole last year, Apple added an extra layer of protection for Apple ID and iCloud users in the form of two-step verification. Today it's making the important security feature available in more countries: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and Spain. With two-step verification, Apple sends a special code to a trusted device like your iPhone whenever someone attempts to make changes to your account or log in for the first time on a new device. Similar to what Google does with Gmail, the extra step prevents malicious changes happening without your knowledge. It's a simple thing to set up, and something that can save you from a whirlwind of pain should your Apple ID ever fall into the wrong hands. Those in the mentioned countries can register now onApple's website.

It looks like Nokia has added game development to its repertoire as the handset maker released free-to-play Modern Mayor for WP8 Lumia devices today. The title tasks players with the mission of saving a dying town from complete ruin and returning it to its glory days. This means that you're in charge of of all construction, keeping the town clean and donating to local charities with in-app purchases. Don't worry though, Townhall Laura, the city publicist, is there to lend a hand. You didn't really think the position was just a title, did you?

Google's just announced Project Tango, a 5-inch Android smartphone prototype equipped with Kinect-like 3D sensors and other components to track motion and map your surroundings. Unlike other 3D-sensing devices including Kinect, Project Tango includes the Myriad 1 vision processor from Movidius, which allows for advanced motion and depth tracking without sucking a ton of power. Available to a limited group of developers today, the handset could enable enhanced indoor navigation and immersive gaming, among other things.
Google's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group is the brains behind Tango, and ATAP head Johnny Lee (formerly of the Microsoft Kinect team) said that the prototype "strives to give mobile devices a human-like understanding of space and motion ... enabling new and enhanced types of user experiences." Gaming and navigation applications are two prime examples, but overall the goal seems to be harnessing precise location and mapping information to enhance your mobile experience. Google also mentions the possibility of navigation assistance for the visually impaired, and it's not a leap to guess that Mountain View could integrate ads with this sophisticated mapping technology as well.
ATAP, one important holdover of Google's acquisition (and subsequent selling off) of Motorola, hadn't revealed any hardware prior to today's announcement, so we'll be following this project with interest. Head past the break for a video demo of Project Tango.

At this point it's a forgone conclusion that Microsoft is going to enter the digital assistant space in order to keep pace with Android and iOS. Its offering, code named Cortana (after a Halo character), is reportedly set to debut as part ofWindows Phone 8.1, which we're expecting to get a glimpse of at Build. While the final shape of the app has yet to be confirmed, recent leaks hint that it will borrow heavily from Siri and Google Now, blending what many see as the best features of each. According to the Verge, Cortana will replace the standard Bing search and feature a circular animated icon as its primary UI element. The icon will use the highlight color you've chosen and bounce around the screen or frown when you ask it a question. In addition to offering visual indications of its "emotional" state, Cortana will feature a Siri-like personality that can greet you by name.
Cortana's central repository of information is called Notebook, which will store your location, personal info, calendar and contact data, as well as track your behaviors. Over time, it will adapt to individual users, but it will also include robust privacy features that will require you to specifically allow Cortana to store data and will even allow you to edit or delete that information after the fact. For example, if you allow it to access your email, Cortana can watch for phrases about meetings or appointments and automatically add reminders.
In addition to your locally stored data and Bing, the virtual assistant will also be able to tap third-party sources of data like Foursquare. If Microsoft is aggressive in opening up Cortana to third-party apps and services, that could give it a leg up on Siri and Now. Especially if it moves quickly to bring the new tool to its other platforms: namely Windows and Xbox.

A simple kind of happiness reigns in the world of mobile gaming. The app stores are brimming over with four-star ratings; popular titles are making billions of dollars for their creators; and folks on the morning commute seem generally content with what they're playing -- sometimes destroying rows of fruit, sometimes rows of candy. Few of us expect or demand anything deeper on a tablet or smartphone, and surely none of us would be crazy enough to choose our next handset based solely on a criterion as narrow as 3D gaming performance. Right?
Well, yes and no. Things certainly get more complicated when you look at the cutting edge -- especially on Android. The industry is pushing the boundaries of what a mobile game can be, what a mobile processor can do and what an Android-based gaming device can look like. And as ambitions escalate, so do the risks. The old nemesis of fragmentation means that certain titles may stutter, or cause excessive battery drain, or fail to run at all, so that those glowing reviews turn into one-star complaints and customers go back to playing it safe. The industry is pushing the boundaries of what a mobile game can be That's why we reckon it's a good time to take stock -- to measure how well some current and older Android devices handle a sample of graphically demanding games. We've got cold, hard numbers to show you, which should help to pinpoint the most future-proofed products. We also have a secondary aim, which is to set a benchmark against which we can judge the next wave of hardware, soon to be announced at Mobile World Congress. Indeed, it's already becoming clear that, from a gaming perspective, smartphones don't always progress in the manner or at the rate that we might expect.

Looking to pick up Samsung's much-improved Galaxy Camera 2? The 16-megapixel Android-powered shooter can be yours next month for $450. The device includes Jelly Bean under the hood, and unlike what we experienced with the original cam, this updated version felt quite snappy during our CES demo. There's a 4.8-inch 720p display, WiFi connectivity (this model doesn't support 3G/4G) and a boosted 2,000 mAh battery. The lens doesn't appear to be improved, however, with a 21x zoom and an f/2.8-5.9 maximum aperture range. Samsung is also announcing pricing and availability for the NX30, which ships today for a whopping $1,000 with an 18-55mm kit lens. We think the company would benefit from a more aggressive MSRP there, given the competition in the mirrorless camera space, but if you aren't turned off by the price, it does appear to be a solid option.

If you hadn't heard, BlackBerry chief John Chen isn't happy with T-Mobile -- he believes the carrier fired a shot across the bow when it enticed BlackBerry users to switch phones in a recent promotion. To mend that bruised relationship, themagenta network is launching a limited-time trade-in offer that gives loyal users a strong incentive to upgrade. As of February 21st, T-Mobile will give you $200 for your existing BlackBerry, and $250 if you're upgrading from a T-Mobile BlackBerry to a BB10 device like the Q10 or Z10. The payout is the same regardless of the device's age, so long as it's in good condition; if you're still rocking a Curve 3G, you'll get the full amount. Market share trends suggest that there won't be too many people upgrading to new BlackBerrys, but the olive branch is welcome all the same.

Attackers have crafted the E-Z-2-Use malware code that exploits a 14-month-old vulnerability in Android devices. The vulnerability exists in the WebView interface a malicious website can utilize it to gain a remote shell into the system with the permissions of the hijacked application. Vulnerable devices are any device that is running a version earlier than 4.2 (in which the vulnerability was patched) which is a staggeringly large amount of the market. The vulnerability is in Android itself rather than the proprietary GMS application platform that sits atop the base operating system so it is not easily patched by Google.

Amid all the talk about Microsoft forking Android for a smartphone OS, one suggestion involves a look back to Microsoft's DOS days. Microsoft DOS was designed per IBM's specification to run exclusively on IBM's PC hardware platforms. Phoenix Technologies employed software developers it nicknamed 'virgins,' who hadn't been exposed to IBM's systems, to create a software layer between Microsoft's DOS system and PCs built by IBM's competitors. This helped Microsoft avoid infringing on IBM's patents or copyrights, and subsequently helped fuel the explosive growth of PC clones. Microsoft could use the same approach to 'clone' the proprietary Android components in its own Android fork. This would prevent copyright infringement while giving Microsoft access to Google Play apps, as well as Android's massive base of developers."Microsoft (or anyone) could generate a lot of goodwill by completely replacing the proprietary bits of Android; good thing that doing so is a work in progress (and open-source, too), thanks to Replicant. (Practically speaking, though, couldn't Google just make access to the Play Store harder, if Microsoft were to create an Android-alike OS? Even now, many devices running Android variants don't have access to it.)

Plus 359 per cent more time on sports apps.
Over all Europe is 18 per cent more active on apps than they are in the US – this is most noticeable on gaming apps where this side of the pond spends 130 per cent more time, and 359 per cent more time on Sports apps.
The data released by Localytics displays great opportunities for companies to target the European market with a strong mobile presence.
These insights can help marketers as they move from seeking downloads alone, and further engaging their current or potential customers inside apps, with insights into how and when people are using their devices.
For example, app use in Europe peaks at 6pm, where as in the US it peaks at 8pm.
Localytics provides an analytics and marketing platform for mobile and web apps, used within over 20,000 apps on more than 1.4 billion devices.

Amongst the increase in mobile web surfers, those who prefer to read the new on their mobile has risen by 15 per cent, compared to a 17 per cent decline on desktop computers.
6,000 respondents from Austalia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Sweden and the US revealed that 51 per cent of affluent consumers use their mobile for business compared to 40 per cent of the general population.
These consumers are also 18 per cent more likely to share their location to get relevant services than the general population.
The wealthier users access news apps the most on their mobile - whilst social networks are favoured by the general population.
A survey taken in 2012 found that mobile news consumers only scanned news headliners on their device, where as now they are 42 per cent more likely to delve deeper into a story.

It's unfair of Braid designer Jon Blow and his indie team Number None to show these The Witness screens now, not only because we have to wait until "mid-2014" to play the game, but because they look much warmer than the bitterly cold winter that surrounds us. Brrr.
The area in these screens of the PS4, PC, and iOS exploratory puzzler is apparently "the marsh," and if the marsh in this game is that colorful and vivid, then surely the rest of this game is just an endless field of double rainbows. But what does this mean?

Google has revealed a smartphone prototype that can scan its surroundings and create live 3D maps.
Called Project Tango, the smartphone can take 250,000 3D measurements in a second and has a Kinect-like visual sensor that can scan the room or area around it.
The 5-inch smartphone aims to achieve a ‘human-like understanding of space and motion’, according to Johnny Lee, the technical lead on the programme.
Google’s Project Tango smartphone will initially only be sold to developers. They are limited to 200, but due to ‘FFC restrictions’ developers who want a prototype must work for an incorporated institution or entity.
You can apply for a Project Tango smartphone by filling out this form.

Samsung is preparing to demonstrate a flexible tablet at Mobile World Congress 2014 next week, it is claimed.
Korean news site Etnews is reporting that the bendable tablet will be able to flex to an angle of 90 degrees, transforming between a flat tablet-like form and a folded laptop-like appearance.
Samsung has already patented the technology to allow screens to fold up to 90 degrees, and has revealed both flexible smartphones and televisions in recent months – making a tablet release a natural progression.
According to Etnews, an representative from Samsung Electronics revealed [Translated]: "Samsung Electronics is preparing to reveal a bendable tablet at MWC."
"Concerning the interest of the product to the general public, the probability is low – the focus is on VIP and key industry personnel with only limited plans to introduce a private exhibition," he added.

There has been a sharp increase in the amount of malware hiding in apps on the Google Play Store, according to a new report.
TechSpot reports that online security services company RiskIQ says that the total number of malicious apps has nearly quadrupled from 11,000 in 2011 to 42,000 in 2013.
This ratio also corresponds to the overall growth of the Play Store, which grew from hosting 250,000 to 1,000,000 in the same timeframe. This means approximately four per cent of apps available on the portal are malicious.
The rate at which Google is removing offending downloads has apparently slowed too – in 2011 the company removed 60 per cent of offending apps but in 2013 it removed less than 25 per cent.
Personalisation apps are apparently the most likely to house spyware or Trojans, although entertainment apps and games are also guilty.

Is that an iPhone in your pocket? Then you'd better pull it out, dive into the settings menu and check for updates: there may be an important patch waiting for you. Apple has quietly pushed out iOS 7.0.6 and 6.1.6 -- small updates that addresses a hitherto unknown security issue with its mobile OS. According to the company's security notes, the previous versions of iOS was missing key SSL validation steps that kept Secure Transport from validating authentic connections, making it possible for "attackers with a privileged network position" to "capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS." In other words, iOS devices were failing to protect themselves on shady networks, unbeknownst to the user. It's not clear if this security flaw was known outside of Cupertino, but it certainly is now. Lucky you, then, that Apple has already issued the fix. Well, what are you waiting for? Update your phone/tablet/Apple TV, already.
Update: Researchers say they've found evidence that OS X also has SSL validation issues. Security firm Crowdstrike analyzed the iOS updates, and say they've found evidence both of Apple's platforms were vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. They expect Apple will push a fix for OS X soon, but for now recommend avoiding shady WiFi hotspots and updating only on trusted networks -- good habits to practice any time.

Good news! BlackBerry has finally figured out how BBM will pose a threat to messaging giants like WhatsApp. It's... stickers. Yes, of all the things the company could do to improve its chat app, it's introducing the same sort of purely cosmetic decals that everyone else offers. As with rival services, those using a new BBM beta can buy themed sticker packs to express themselves in creative (and very cutesy) ways. In all fairness, the addition may help BlackBerry court younger chatters. However, we hope that the phone maker has a lot more up its sleeve than this -- me-too upgrades can only go so far.

Have you looked on with envy as friends with Lumia 2520 tablets use Here Maps to navigate around city streets? You won't have to for much longer. Nokia hasrevealed that it's bringing the mapping software to all Windows 8.1 PCs, including RT-based systems. The wider availability will come alongside a host of upgrades, too. In addition to the necessary additions of mouse and keyboard support, you'll also get a search history, higher-resolution satellite images and faster map loading. Nokia will offer the app for free, beginning with those in North America and Europe; everyone should have access within a few days.

The certificate-validation vulnerability that Apple patched in iOS yesterday also affects Mac OS X up to 10.9.1, the current version. Several security researchers analyzed the patch and looked at the code in question in OS X and found that the same error exists there as in iOS. Researcher Adam Langley did an analysis of the vulnerable code in OS X and said that the issue lies in the way that the code handles a pair of failures in a row. The bug affects the signature verification process in such a way that a server could send a valid certificate chain to the client and not have to sign the handshake at all, Langley found. Some users are reporting that Apple is rolling out a patch for his vulnerability in OS X, but it has not shown up for all users as yet. Langley has published a test site that will show OS X users whether their machines are vulnerable.

It's back to court for Apple and Samsung. After an attempt at settling their latest patent dispute, the two companies will begin another trial in March, according to a filing with the US district court in San Jose. To be clear, this isn't a re-trial of the case that Apple brought back in 2011 -- you know, the one where Samsung was made to pay nearly a billion dollars in damages. No, this is a new case, one that addresses a different set of patents, and one that names more recent devices, like the GS3. For now, it's unclear how much money is at stake, though experts cited by The Wall Street Journal claim that the damages could be higher this time around, given that the case includes newer Samsung devices that sold even better than the products named in the earlier suit. All will be revealed in March, we suppose. We'll be back then reporting any major developments -- even if we're as sick of these patent wars as you are.

It definitely looks like a new Galaxy Gear. There's definitely two of them and... that's most of what we can discern from what appear to be some cannily sniffed-out thumbnails from, well, somewhere. According to @evleaks, they'll be known as the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Galaxy Gear Neo. Samsung's branched off its Galaxy phone range in a similar way, and if that's any indicator, the Neo smartwatch will be a cheaper model with presumably some hardware drawbacks to go alongside that discount price tag. If you squint extra hard, you should be able to make out a physical button below the screen, with the one on the left (presumably Gear version two), getting more of the metallic design love than its stablemate. Are they really running on Tizen? Has Samsung solved the battery gripes of its first smartwatch launch? These important answers (alongside some higher res images, please) should be mere days away.

Ridge Racer Slipstream has been released for Android devices via the Google Play app store.
Following the game's debut release on Apple's iOS App Store in December 2013, the new Android title is a spin-off racer in the long-running arcade series from Namco Bandai.
While the game is a paid app on iOS, originally released at $2.99/£1.99 but currently priced at $0.99, the Android version is free to download with with players needing to "unlock the full game through in-app purchases".
That aside, the two versions appear to be identical, with 10 tracks (each reversible, for a total of 20 track layouts), 12 customizable cars, Arcade and career modes, with the later containing over 100 racing events.

Greetings all!I'm kicking off this week with something that we didn't write a story about, but simply tweeted the moment we saw it because we thought it was so cool. It's an HTML5 Game Boy emulator written by New York-based programmer Ben Midi specifically to work with smartphones. It certainly runs beautifully on my iPhone 5 - others have said that it also functions perfectly well on their newer Androids. All you have to do to make it work is type www.benmidi.com/gameboy into your browser, and hey presto! Your phone is now a Game Boy - complete with a nice selection of old classic games that includes one of my all-time faves, Tetris. The emulated Game Boy's buttons are a tad cramped in portrait mode, but in landscape mode there's plenty of room for your fingers to take you on a highly enjoyable cruise along memory boulevard. Proper buttons! Proper buttons! My kingdom for some proper buttons!
I'm not sure how bothered Nintendo is about this, but since I played a similar java-based Game Boy emulator about 18 months ago that's still around, it seems that, at least for now, they have more important things to deal with. Either way, this emulator is just another step toward a future where we'll be playing all sorts of interesting stuff on our browsers. And by interesting stuff, I mean really decent games, and not just the simple things we tend to associate with web gaming. I'll be talking a little more about this in an upcoming LFA. I recently spent time with some folks involved in WebGL and the PlayStation 4 UX (whose backbone is WebGL code), and they have some very exciting things to say about how browser gaming will evolve.Mike also had emulators on his mind this week when he wrote about the best ones currently available for Android. He picked out some interesting apps, which made me look at my iPhone with some degree of irritation. I do like the thing, but sometimes it feels like Apple's vice-like grip is just a tad too iron-clawed. Still, at least I have iMame for it, which I managed to snag in the few minutes it was on the App Store before Apple yoinked it off.As I'm writing this piece, Mike is putting together a news story about Amazon's rumoured Android-based video game console. The Seattle company showed it was serious about entering the gaming market some weeks ago when it acquired Double Helix, and now it's busy posting gaming jobs that sound pretty damn exciting. Most interesting of all is that Amazon's Lab126 (essentially its consumer electronics R+D department) is looking to bring around 250 new people on board. It certainly sounds like things are beginning to pick up the pace.

Unsung Story developer Playdek finished its Kickstarter campaign for the game on February 14, pulling in $660,126 for its $600,000 base funding goal. Stretch goals for the tactical RPG are currently beyond the raised funds, but Playdek has opened PayPal donations for fans that want to change that.
Donations won't be based on charity, of course - available rewards include copies of the game, posters, soundtracks, beta access and in-game content. The PayPal page states that the current bundles will be available for two weeks, after which Playdek will "change out the packages."
Various stretch goals include a New Game+ mode, co-operative play, a map creator, ports to the PS4, 3DS and Vita and more. You can check the required funding amounts for each by scrolling down Unsung Story's Kickstarter page.
As it stands, the game is being developed for PC, Mac and Linux and will be ported to iOS and Android devices. Final Fantasy Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno and Bravely Default Art Director Akihiko Yoshida are among the Playdek team, which estimates to deliver Unsung Story to backers in July of 2015.

Spreadtrum certainly isn't a household name in the US, but Mozilla is less concerned with brand recognition than it is with delivering an ultra-cheap handset. The two companies have announced a new partnership that will see Spreadtrum building reference designs for Firefox OS phones with a target price of $25. (And no, we're not missing a zero there.) The heart of the effort is the SC6821, a Cortex A5-based chipset that supports WCDMA and EDGE networks, but not LTE. The platform includes WiFi, Bluetooth, cameras and FM radio, though touchscreen support appears to top out at 3.5-inch HVGA panels. The lack of 4G connectivity, older CPU design and low screen resolutions clearly mark this as a low-end initiative, but its one that will give it a major leg up in emerging markets like India where feature phones still rule supreme.

The Y300 marks Huawei's first entry into the world of Firefox OS. But unlike ZTE's Open C, this device runs FFOS 1.1 -- not the latest 1.3 build with its focus on stability. Regardless, the Y300 looks like much like its sibling FFOS devices in software and general build quality. The 4-inch handset has a WVGA display, 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 8225 processor paired with 512MB RAM, 1,950mAh battery and is the first FFOS device to include dual cameras: a 5 megapixel module on back and VGA up front.
As we mentioned earlier, the build is nothing special, but that seems to be the common thread for FFOS devices. The Y300 has a black, all plastic hull that's marked by a power button up top and alongside the headphone jack, volume keys on the right edge and a micro-USB port at the base.
The FFOS UI appeared mostly unchanged on the Y300, but a Mozilla rep did confirm Huawei had made subtle tweaks including the addition of a rotation lock amongst other minor changes. Again, as we spent very little time with the handset, we weren't able to get a real feel for its overall performance, but the experience still centers around HTML 5 apps and the adaptive search bar powered by everything.me.
There's no specific release date for Huawei's Y300 yet, but we've been told to expect a retail launch within the next couple of months. Pricing as well is still yet to be disclosed, but given this is FFOS we're talking about, you can bet on it being affordable.

Microsoft is on a roll at its MWC event today. Shortly after announcing updates to Windows and Windows Phone, the company also told us that it's now trying to make its mobile platform more flexible for operators and manufacturers and is now working with a whole bevy of new manufacturing partners. Among the notable companies on the list are LG, Lenovo and ZTE, in addition to several companies in India, such as Xolo, Karbonn and Lava. Some of the listed companies (such as LG, Huawei and ZTE) have worked with Windows Phone in the past, but today's revelations show that those companies haven't completely turned away from Microsoft -- or have returned to the fold.
Says Microsoft VP Nick Parker, "we're open for business on Windows Phone to anyone who wants to build one." The company is extending its arms out to more partners by providing more options; for instance, Parker told us that Microsoft is now working with operators on possible white label devices -- phones that are branded by operators but built by other manufacturers. Additionally, Microsoft also announced that any company can build a Windows Phone using Qualcomm's Reference Design; interestingly, this means that Android-based hardware could potentially be reused for Windows Phone.
These changes announced today will certainly add more appeal and higher volume to the platform around the world, especially in emerging markets, and is a good way for Microsoft to indirectly address growing concerns that its upcoming acquisition of Nokia's device division would limit the interest of outside manufacturers.

Microsoft has made a few announcements related to Windows Phone 8.1 this afternoon in Barcelona. While we don't expect to see the new update in its entirety until April, we got at least a few satisfying nuggets of info today. First, we're going to see a lot more flexible support for hardware: 8.1 will be able to support more Qualcomm chipsets, such as Snapdragon 200, 400 and 400 LTE; it will come with TD-LTE, TD-SCDMA and SGLTE support, the ability for phones to use dual-SIM, apps on microSD and virtual softkeys instead of capacitive keys. Devices won't be required to have a hardware camera shutter key anymore, either (but it's still offered as an option anyway). Additionally, we've been told that devices currently on Windows Phone 8 will be able to get an update to 8.1, so it's fortunately backwards-compatible to some degree.
With the new update, Microsoft is going to introduce support for dual SIM devices, which is huge in developing areas of the world. As part of this support, WP8.1 will offer Live Tiles for each SIM, as well as the option to link messaging tiles together for both. Microsoft is also going to be compatible with Qualcomm's Reference Design (QRD), and VP Joe Belfiore brought a Snapdragon 200-powered Windows Phone reference device to show it off. Unfortunately he couldn't show it off to us personally, since there were a few things he didn't want us to see, but it's refreshing to see such sweeping hardware opportunities; this opens up more ability for growth in global market share.

Microsoft VP Joe Belfiore made an announcement that will come as a solid addition to the Windows Phone app ecosystem: Facebook Messenger will be making its way to the platform sometime in the next few weeks. No specific date was given, since it's still in the works, but we're told that it's progressing well enough that Belfiore could announce it. More updates from Microsoft as we get word.

Even in an industry known for evolving at an impossibly quick pace, it's rare for a product to be replaced in just five months. If you've read our review of Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch, however, it probably makes sense why the manufacturer would want to antiquate it as soon as possible -- while an interesting concept, the wearable was clearly half-baked. This morning, Samsung is starting off Mobile World Congress by announcing the Gear 2 (shown above, right) and the camera-less Gear 2 Neo (above, left), both of which (the company hopes) will address most of its predecessor's pain points when it arrives in stores worldwide this April.
The absence of Galaxy branding is no typo, by the way; the new Gear will run on the Tizen operating system, a platform which Samsung has been investing large amounts of money and resources into. It's not the company's first device running that OS -- that honor goes to the NX300M camera -- but regardless, it's hard to know exactly how different the user experience will be on a Tizen-powered smartwatch instead of an Android-based one. According to Samsung, we can expect a battery life of 2-3 days (two to three times better than the first Gear's one-day life), an "enriched application ecosystem" and some sweeping changes to the external design. Check out the gallery below and join us after the break for more details.

I have published VGBA-Android 4.3.5 today, a new version of my GameBoy Advance emulator:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d=com.fms.vgba
In this version, I have fixed the 16bit PUSH CPU instruction so that it can make changes to the I/O registers, as some programmers use this instruction to initiate the DMA and do other things. I have also added the "Hide Title Bar" option, requested by many users. Please note that once you hide your action bar, you can always get it back by sliding your finger down from the center of the screen. Finally, I have added cheats for a few games. See the complete list of changes below.
- Fixed THUMB PUSH instruction for cases where DMA is initiated with PUSH.
- Added "Hide Title Bar" option to hide status/action bar on startup.
- Added Egg Mania cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Elf The Movie cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added ET The Extraterrestrial cheats to the Cheatopedia.

Quote:
This week´s VGB-Android 3.9.16 release is on Google Play now:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id=com.fms.vgb
VGB emulates GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, and Super GameBoy video game consoles. The new release makes sure you cannot press two opposing arrow keys at once (some games absolutely hate that) and adds the "Hide Title Bar" option for those users who cannot stand the action bar. Note that once you hide the title bar, you can get it back by sliding your finger down the screen.
People with Moga gamepads should be able to remap Moga buttons via "Assign Keys" option, something many of you requested. Also, gamepads can now be used to navigate the tabbed Settings dialog. See the complete list of changes below.
- Now locking out opposite arrow keys.
- Added "Hide Title Bar" option to hide status/action bar on startup.
- Added ability to assign Moga buttons via "Assign Keys".
- Fixed battery drain when VGB is running in background.
- Added arrow keys navigation to the tabbed Settings.
- Added Moga controller navigation to the tabbed Settings.

Developers will be able to further monetise their apps and reach even more of the smartphone market.
Along with five new handsets unveiled including the Nokia X, X+, XL plus the Nokia 220 and Asha 230, Nokia has also announced that it will open up its new Nokia X platform to Android developers.
The new software platform is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), meaning that Android developers will be able to tap into this part of the market – increasing their audience reach and app revenue, by seamlessly introducing their apps over to the Nokia X platform.
Bryan Biniak, VP and GM of developer experience at Nokia, said: “Today Windows Phone is the fastest growing mobile ecosystem in the world, and we continue to see incredible momentum with our Lumia smartphones.
Giving developers access to Nokia’s operator billing network capabilities will enable them to further monetise their apps, as it offers them a global reach."
Many Android apps can be put on the Nokia Store as they are, with minimal modifications needed, due to the Nokia X analyser tool which reduces porting time by identifying required changes.
To make things even easier for developers, they will be able to use one code base and distribute a single APK (application package file) targeting multiple stores.
“Amit Patel, VP of developer relations at Nokia, commented: “The reach of Nokia's operator billing network provides developers with a powerful revenue driver – up to five times that of credit-card billing offered within other platforms.
“Combined with Nokia in-app Payment, developers have the freedom to build on the model that works best for them.”
Leading apps that will be available on the Nokia X platform include Facebook, LINE free voice and messages, Plants vs Zombies 2, Real Football 2014, Skype, Spotify, Twitter, Viber and Vine to name a few.

Sony has introduced a number of new products at Mobile World Congress 2014, including its new flagship smartphone and tablet, as well as the waterproof SmartBand.
The Xperia Z2 smartphone is a direct successor to the Xperia Z1. The new device comes with a 5.2-inch screen, 2.26GHz Snapdragon 801 SoC, 3GB of RAM, and front-facing speakers.
There’s a new tablet from Sony, also called the Xperia Z2, which appears to have most of the same internals as the smartphone, only packed into a 10.1-inch device. It has the same Snapdragon chipset, RAM and front-facing speaker design, but with a bigger battery.
Sony has also unveiled a mid-range device called the Xperia M2. This smartphone comes with a smaller 4.5-inch display than the new flagship, 1GB of RAM and a Quad Core 1.2GHz Cortex A7 SoC.
As well as tablets and smartphones, Sony has introduced the SmartBand SWR10, which will be available in 60 markets next month.
The SmartBand is a waterproof fitness tracker that can monitor sleep, receive notification alerts and control media playback.
It also has a ‘Lifelogging’ feature that lets you see how active you’ve been, where you’ve been, what pictures you’ve taken and how you’ve been ‘communicating with the world’. It lets you set activity goals and even makes recommendations to help inform future decisions.
The SmartBand works with any Android device and is set to cost around €99.

U.S. cellphone carriers were offered a technology last year that supporters say would dramatically cut incidents of smartphone theft, but the carriers turned it down, according to sources with knowledge of the proposal. The so-called 'kill-switch' software allows consumers to remotely wipe and render their phones useless if stolen. Law enforcement and politicians believe the incentive for stealing a smartphone or tablet would be greatly reduced if the technology became standard, because the devices could quickly be rendered useless. A proposal by Samsung to the five largest U.S. carriers would have made the LoJack software, developed by Canada's Absolute Software, a standard component on many of its Android phones in the U.S. The proposal followed pressure from the offices of the San Francisco District Attorney and the New York Attorney General for the industry to do more to prevent phone theft.

Two independent sources inside Nokia have confirmed that Nokia Lumia phones send private information to Nokia and Microsoft servers around the world. Location data, SMS-messages and browser identification is uploaded. The Nokia leadership has known about the privacy violation since 2011 when the Lumia phones were introduced. In spring 2013, after suspicions of leaks and during the negotiations for selling off the mobile phone branch to Microsoft, the Finnish state communications department sent an inquiry to Nokia regarding leaking of private data, asking Nokia to assure that users' private data is not leaked. Nokia did not want to (or could not) provide an assurance due to the delicate business negotiations. After two more inquiries with narrower demands, Nokia assured that the phone, excluding third-party software such as the operating system, did not violate Finnish privacy laws. Microsoft is apparently also following Lumia user accounts. On one occasion a parent's Lumia account was closed without warning when they uploaded pictures from the phone displaying their kids playing naked on the beach at their summer cottage.

In announcing its $16B acquisition of WhatsApp, Facebook confessed it had very little data on WhatsApp's estimated 450 million users. Asked about the user data, Facebook CFO David Ebersman said, 'WhatsApp has good penetration across all demographics but you are not asked your age when you sign up.' Wall Street analysts concerned by Ebersman's answer won't be comforted by GeekWire reporter Taylor Soper's (non-scientific) poll of UW students, which suggested that WhatsApp may not exactly be BMOC (Big Messenger on Campus). 'I don't use it at all,' replied one UW junior. 'I've heard of it but I have so many other things I do online that it would just be another time-consuming thing. I use Facebook or texting to talk to people.' WhatsApp did fare better in a survey of Soper's Facebook network, where responders said they used WhatsApp mostly forcommunicating internationally and in groups. So, are you or someone you know using WhatsApp, and what's the motivation for doing so?"

We caught a glimpse of Sony's Core activity sensor back at CES, and it seems the masses will be able to outfit their wrists with one this spring. At Mobile World Congress, Sony announced that the SmartBand (SWR10) that houses the Core and its accompanying Lifelog app will be available in March. If you're in need of a refresher, the Bluetooth and NFC-compatible activity tracker is waterproof with a micro-USB port and will arrive in only in Black... initially. Color options are set to arrive after launch with a 2014 FIFA World Cup model as part of the group. The Lifelog app is the control center for the Core, collecting your daily stats, tracking sleep, logging places and storing other activity on an Android device. Similar to other activity tracking software, Lifelog allows you to set goals and monitor progress right from your mobile device. When you're heading out of range or when you need to get out of bed, the SmartBand will alert you to keep things in check. Tweets, emails, calls and other messages will prompt the SmartBand to vibrate as well. When used alongside Sony's Walkman app, the wearable can be used to play, pause, and skip tracks. Unfortunately, there's no word on pricing, but we're sure to get more info on that when the exact release date is announced.

Samsung has just outed its shiny new Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress, but you may be curious how it stacks up against flagships from other outfits. Well folks, we've lined it up side-by-side with the Sony Xperia Z2, LG G Pro 2 and HTC One on the other side of the break. While the GS5 and Xperia Z2 appear to be neck and neck, it may come down to those standout features to see which handset gets the edge. Of course, a new HTC flagship is on the way next month, so we'll have to take stock all over again once the details are revealed. If you're anxious to see how the GS5 matches up with your current daily driver, you can add in that model and tally the numbers with our Compare tool.

Samsung's new Galaxy S5 doesn't skimp on battery power, with an expected 10 hours of web browsing and 12 hours of video playback on a single charge. When you're on hour 11 of watching cat videos with no charger in site, the handsets new "ultra power-saving mode" will keep your handset purring along by making the screen black-and-white and turning off all the non-essential services on your phone. Even better, Samsung says if you put your phone in standby mode with only 10 percent of the battery left, it will still last "up to 24 hours" before running out of juice.

Samsung has just announced that the Galaxy S5 will be available starting April 11th in 150 countries. Over here in the US, it'll be available on Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS and U.S. Cellular. Ma Bell is going one step further, offering up the Gear 2 and the Gear Fit smartwatches as well. If you'd rather go elsewhere for your mobile needs, retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, RadioShack, Sam's Club, Target and Walmart will have the GS5 plus all three of Samsung's newly announced wearables. As for our friends across the Atlantic, UK providers EE, Three and Vodafone UK have jumped aboard the GS5 bandwagon, as have retailers Phones4u and Carphone Warehouse. Though it hasn't been announced, we expect other carriers such as O2 will support the phone too. No word on pricing just yet, but we expect we'll find that out closer to the phone's April launch date.

Want to know how big a player Samsung is in the smartphone market? The company now says that it's sold over 200 million Galaxy S phones since the line first went on the market in 2010. For reference, the Korean tech giant had notched up sales of 100 million Galaxy S devices as of slightly more than a year ago. Samsung isn't breaking down the sales by model, although it had sold over 40 million Galaxy S 4s as of last fall -- much of that 200 million clearly came from more recent customers. It's difficult to compare the data against other manufacturers, since few of them break out sales by range. Apple, for example, said that it shipped 700 million iOS devices of all kinds as of October. However, it's safe to say that Samsung remains a heavyweight at the high end of the smartphone market.

After Nokia's big announcement of the brand-new X series, we had a chance to sit down with Stephen Elop, the executive VP of Devices for the company. Naturally, the company's decision to crank out an Android device was a matter of great curiosity for us. Most importantly: Did Microsoft agree to this from the beginning, or did Nokia's acquirer go into this idea begrudgingly? According to Elop, it's the former. "Microsoft bought the Mobile Devices division," Elop told us, "so they knew what they were doing." Given the company's focus on a tile-based experience and its emphasis on the Microsoft Cloud, it's beginning to make a lot of sense. Elop went on to state that the X is primarily a stepping stone (a "gateway phone," if you will) for a largely untouched market segment -- emerging markets and developing countries -- to get acclimatized to Microsoft's suite of services and familiar Live Tiles interface. It's an interesting strategy, no doubt, and we're excited to see if it pays off in the long run -- people won't be rushing to a Windows Phone weeks after buying an XL, but it sounds like the idea is to plant a seed within consumers, as well as a reliance on services like Skype, Outlook and OneDrive. Our interview with Stephen in its entirety is below.

When you have the inventory that Samsung does, you don't need to make a fuss when you launch a mid-range Android phone. But the Korean firm did recently release one -- the Galaxy Core LTE -- and it's certainly worth a moment of your time if you're in that market. Design-wise you know the drill: take one ofSamsung's flagships and nip a bit here, maybe a tuck there. Aesthetically it's derivative, sure, but comfortable -- like some well worn-in shoes. On a positive note, the back panel is textured, and feels like something between rubber and a soft touch finish. This at least stops it feeling too much like one of Samsung's many "sausage machine" handsets.
As for specifications, it's fairly typical of the current mid-tier breed. That means a 4.5-inch qHD display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core chip (based on Arm's A9, but no mention of specifics), a 5-megapixel/VGA camera combo, 8GB of storage (plus a microSD slot) and a 2,100 mAh battery. We only got to spend a short while with it, but if we're honest, we were actually impressed by how quick and fluid menu navigation was, or how responsive Google maps rendering was. This, of course, should be no real test of a modern phone, but it still gave us a little "not bad" reflective moment. At the moment we only know it's coming to Europe and Asia, with no mention on price. But if we're betting on anything, it's that it'll have a new cousin to look up to too -- in just a few short hours.

Here in Barcelona, Nokia's press shindig is all about showing off the handsets that are destined for emerging markets and the oft-cited "next billion" phone users. The first piece of hardware on show is Nokia's Asha 230, designed for those who want to move from a feature phone to something a little bit smarter. The quad-band GSM handset is available in single or dual-SIM variants and has Nokia's Xpress browser to help sip scarce mobile data. Hardware-wise, there's a 2.8-inch QVGA display, will accept 32GB microSD cards and is priced at just 45 euros. It'll roll out today across all the regions that Nokia currently does business in.
At the same time, the company is also unveiling the Nokia 220, an "aspirational" feature phone that comes with a 2.4-inch display. Available in single or dual-SIM versions, it'll connect to 2G internet, enabling users to take advantage of the pre-loaded Twitter and Facebook apps, as well as the aforementioned Xpress browser. It'll retail for 29 euros and is launching from today in Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Candy Crush Saga developer King has withdrawn its trademark application for the word "candy," reversing a controversial move and potentially leaving developers free to create candy-themed mobile games without fear of legal action.
King requested abandonment of its broad trademark on February 24, following a recent opposition statement from the International Game Developers Association. King's trademark was approved for publication in January.
"Our IP is constantly being infringed and we have to enforce our rights and to protect our players from confusion," a King representative stated following the trademark's publication approval.
The trademark application's complete history is documented under the "Prosecution History" subheading here at the United States Patent and Trademark Office website. King's related attempt to trademark the word "saga" remains under suspension.

Gaming peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz plans to join the mobile gamepad market with the upcoming release of the C.T.R.L.i, a Bluetooth-enabled, dual-analog controller with native support for iOS7 devices.
Keen eyes may observe that the C.T.R.L.i bears a striking resemblance to the controller bundled with the Mad Catz-branded MOJO microconsole released last year. The C.T.R.L.i uses the same basic shell as the MOJO's controller with an additional spring-loaded mount that supports current and future iOS devices.
The C.T.R.L.i will be priced at $80 when it hits retail in April.

The service is planned for the second quarter of this year in the hope it will help the company hit one billion users.
WhatsApp and Facebook’s plan to connect / take over the techy world could be closer than we thought.
Jan Koum, CEO of the messaging app announced at MWC yesterday that he is aiming to offer free calling to its 450 million users in the hope it will encourage that number to jump to one billion.
We can imagine the look of shock and horror on the world’s network operators, who had already taken a big hit when OTT messaging services first came into the spotlight – causing SMS revenues to drop drastically.
Adding free calls to its service as well could be devastating for networks around the world.
In yesterday’s keynote speech, Zuckerberg defended paying the extortionate price Facebook paid for WhatsApp – saying that it is the most engaging app he had ever seen on mobile.
James Briscoe, MD of marketing agency Unique Digital, commented: “Voice calling could be just the start, as Facebook has just bought itself a slice of the increasingly important voice search pie.
“Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp was always going to be one that saw a shakeup of the services offered by both platforms (regardless of whether they are merged together or not). All roads led to a future where social networks are true communications backbones, rather than a peripheral bit of fun.”
Following the acquisition, WhatsApp experienced a short-term outage of its services over the weekend, stating: “Sorry we are currently experiencing server issues. We hope to be back up and recovered shortly.”
Here are 22 things – including his WhatsApp comment – that Mark Zuckerberg said in his Keynote speech yesterday…

Apple is miles behind with 19 per cent.
Android is storming ahead as the most used operating system in Europe, answering for 68.5 per cent of all smartphones in the three months leading up to January, reports Kantar.
Although Windows remains the fastest growing European OS, it still only owns 10.1 per cent of the market, compared to Apple who are in second place with 19 per cent, still a fair distance from Android.
Windows market share is being largely driven by the popularity of the Nokia Lumia 520 which was the fourth highest selling handset in Britain over the last three months, just behind the Apple 5C.
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “Nokia has continued its successful tactic of sucking up remaining feature phone owners across Europe. Even in Britain, where smartphone penetration is at 70 per cent, there are over 14 million feature phone consumers for it to target.
Despite previous disappointing results, Apple’s iPhone 5C has finally started to take off. In the first few months since the launch, the iPhone 5S outsold the 5C three to one, however the cheaper device is gaining momentum and has now reduced that ratio, two to one.
Women are the biggest 5C fans, with 74 per cent of British 5C buyers being female, compared to 36 per cent for the 5S.
5S users are however more engages with their phones, particularly for heavy data usage.

Google is rumoured to be working with LG on a smartwatch featuring a brand-new operating system.
CNET reports that Google will unveil plans for the wearable device in March. According to a person familiar with the plans, the smartwatch is set to make its debut at the Google I/O conference in June.
“Google will employ a Nexus-like model in which it designs the software and controls virtually every aspect of the launch, leaving the hardware details to a partner who takes a backseat in terms of visibility,” reported the publication.
There has already been a number of smartwatches and smartbands unveiled over the past two days at Mobile World Congress, including Samsung, Sony and Huawei.

Samsung has unveiled its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, at this year’s Mobile World Congress.
The new handset features a fingerprint scanner, much like the one found on Apple’s iPhone 5S. While it can be used to unlock the device, it has another function that isn’t included on Apple’s flagship: It can be used to authorise PayPal transactions online.
The fingerprint scanner could ‘lead to the end of use names and passwords’ said Samsung at its Unpacked 5 event.
The smartphone features a 16MP camera with 4K video capabilities, 5.1-inch display, 2.5GHz Quad-Core processor, 2GB of RAM and a battery that can last 20 per cent longer than the Galaxy S4’s.
Having already announced the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches the day before, Samsung unveiled a third piece of wearable tech along with the S5.

The Gear Fit is designed to act more like a fitness tracking band rather than a smartwatch. The display curves around your wrist and is lighter and more compact than the Gear 2. While it doesn’t have a camera, it does tell the time and have pedometer and heart rate monitor apps.

Blackberry has revealed that its new ‘classic’ smartphone will feature full qwerty keyboard, hard buttons and trackpad.
It may only be day two of Mobile World Congress, but an awful lot of new smartphones, wearable devices and prototypes have already been unveiled at the event.
While most announcements and talks so far have been pretty predictable, Blackberry’s CEO has announced some more unusual plans.
Having previously released the Q10 smartphone, which featured a full qwerty keyboard, the firm has decided to go even further back to basics by unveiling the Q20, a handset which also includes what Blackberry describes as ‘classic’ physical buttons – Menu, Back, Send and End, as well as an integrated trackpad.
CEO John Chen insists that this is the phone that millions of ‘passionate qwerty customers around the world’ have been asking for.
The firm also unveiled a low-cost version called the Z3, which will sell for less than $200. The phone will go on sale in Indonesia in April with plans to later expand to other markets.
When asked about a version featuring 4G connectivity, Chen said it is planned for “sometime in the future before I die.”
Just in case all that didn’t give you the idea that Blackberry is a little behind the times, Chen also revealed that the firm has no plans to take part in what is one of the hottest trends in the mobile technology market right now, wearable tech.

Jeff Atwood, co-founder of Stack Overflow, says the mobile app ecosystem is getting out of hand. 'Your platform now has a million apps? Amazing! Wonderful! What they don't tell you is that 99% of them are awful junk that nobody would ever want.' Atwood says most companies trying to figure out how to get users to install their app should instead be figuring out just why they need a mobile app in the first place. Fragmentation is another issue, as mobile devices continue to speciate and proliferate. 'Unless you're careful to build equivalent apps in all those places, it's like having multiple parallel Internets. "No, sorry, it's not available on that Internet, only the iOS phone Internet." Or even worse, only on the United States iOS phone Internet.' Monetization has turned into a race to the bottom, and it's led to worries about just what an app will do with the permissions it's asking for. Atwood concludes, 'The tablet and phone app ecosystem is slowly, painstakingly reinventing everything I hated about the computer software industry before the web blew it all up.'"

Exactly a year to the day after it first announced its Knox security solution, Samsung's returned to Mobile World Congress with news that it's making it even easier to secure and manage Galaxy devices. With the launch of Knox 2.0 today, Samsung's changed the way the platform handles Google Play apps, digitally securing their data without the need to run them in a dedicated Knox workspace. Before, personal- and work-related apps were separated, but Samsung says "most" Google Play apps can now live in Samsung's secure world. It's certainly serious about its new features, as CEO JK Shin popped up at the event to drive home Samsung's desire to nail the enterprise market.
Samsung wants more secure apps across the board, so it's also launching Knox Marketplace, a dedicated cloud-based app store that lets tech managers grab apps and install them on all employee phones with a few clicks of a button. Box and GoToMeeting are already on board, and there are plenty of enterprise companies already working to make their apps available. Samsung tells us that the new features will begin rolling out in the second quarter, and it'll come pre-installed on the newly unveiled Galaxy S5. First-generation Knox users will get an upgrade to the new version as soon as their devices get an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat -- whenever that may be.

So that's Samsung's new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. The company makes the majority of the components itself, but what happened to those home-grownExynos processors? Well, Samsung tells us that the GS5 will come in two variants, one with the 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon chip (the model that we tested out at MWC), and another with a 2.1GHz octo-core Exynos. Samsung did the same with the Galaxy S4 last year, but we didn't pick up any huge differences in performance when we compared the two phones. The LTE-capable GS4s never left Korea, however, so we'd predict a similarly limited roll-out for any Exynos-powered GS5s.

Fans can watch Disney, Pixel and Marvel movies anywhere.
Walt Disney Co is making moves to encourage its fans to buy digital movies with Disney Movies Anywhere, reports Reuters.
The cloud-based movie service is available online and on mobile, for consumers to buy Disney, Pixar or Marvel movies and store them on the cloud, meaning they can be viewed anywhere.
400 titles are available through Apple’s iTunes store as well as the Disney Movies Anywhere website and app, and viewed on a laptop or desktop, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, as well as the Apple TV box.
Jamie Voris, chief technology officer at Disney Studios, said: “The beauty of this technology is that it enables us to work with iTunes and future provider partners to ensure movie lovers have streamlined access to all of their favourite Disney titles no matter what device they are on.”
Disney is currently in talks to offer this service outside of iTunes.
Distimo previously reported that Disney was the dominant company in the app stores.

Four of the top security software firms have reported on the threats that smartphone and tablet owners face.
Panda Security has uncovered a potentially massive attack on Android takes advantages of Facebook’s ‘suggested posts’ by creating one advertising WhatsApp.
When users access Facebook from their Android mobile device, they will see different messages under the title ‘Suggested Post’ advertising WhatsApp tips. If the intended victim clicks on any of these ads, they are redirected to a fake version of Google Play.
Bitdefender has also uncovered some of the dangers Android users face. In a recent study, the firm found that out of 836,021 free Android apps studied, 35 per cent of them can access user locations, while almost three per cent can leak email address, five per cent can locate and over photos and ten per cent can read contact lists.
Kaspersky has found that nearly 100,000 new malicious programs for mobile devices were detected in 2013, more than double the previous year’s figures, with 98.1 per cent of all mobile malware detected in 2013 targeting Android device.
Meanwhile, Symantec has revealed that mobile malware will be ten years old this year. It all began in 2004 with the first variant of SymbOS.Cabir. The worm targeted Symbian OS, which was a very popular mobile operating system at the time.

Smartphone games accounted for a massive 75 per cent of the handheld market last year.
That's despite significant growth for Nintendo's 3DS console.
A report by IDC and App Annie found that Nintendo's handheld shifted an additional 10m games last year compared with the year before, with 30m games sold in total. Vita and PSP combined shifted around 8m. (Data does not include digital exclusive games)
Overall, boxed and full-game digital spending on these handheld platforms rose by nine per cent between 2012 and 2013.
But it was a year of major growth for the smartphone sector.
Consumer spend on Google's Android games store increased by over four times in Q4 2013 compared to the same period of the previous year. Likewise, global spending on Apple's iOS App Store more than doubled throughout the same period.
In fact, revenue generated by Apple's iOS platform greatly outpaced both the handheld and Google Play categories. The indexed consumer spending on iOS games topped 200m whilst handhelds and Google Play reached between 120m and 130m.
The top three grossing games on 3DS, Vita and other handhelds were dominated by Nintendo with Pokemon X&Y, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
Elsewhere, Clash of Clans, Puzzle & Dragons and Candy Crush Saga proved most popular on iOS, whilst Puzzle & Dragons, Candy Crush Saga and Monster Taming for Kakao rounded out the Google Play store's Top Three.
"While consumers have traditionally spent more on games versus other types of apps, more than 75 per cent of combined iOS & Google Play consumer app spending in 4Q13 came from games," said Bertrand Schmitt, CEO of App Annie.
"This is a significant increase compared to Q4 2012 and a testament to the ever-growing popularity of games."

It's been a long time coming, but Skype's revealed that folks can finally sign up for service using a Microsoft account. Skype believes this feature is perfect for users who perhaps want the least amount of logins possible, and it also points toMicrosoft's two-step verification as a benefit for having such an account. Meanwhile, the Windows Phone app has been updated with a number of security improvements, plus an indicator which lets you know when the person on the other side is typing. As part of the integration with its parent company, Skype will now require a Microsoft account (like the one used to set up your WP device) when registering for a new account through the application. This new version is only available for Windows Phone 8, however -- as you might recall, support for the app on earlier versions of the OS was cut off months ago.

Still unsure where unlocking your mobile device falls under the eyes of the law? Legislation just passed through the US House of Representatives that might clear things up, but there's a catch. The Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition act would allow users to unlock devices for use on a new carrier after their subsidized contract expires -- but a late change to the bill tacked on an exclusion for "bulk unlocking." This last minute change spoils the legislation for companies that purchase, unlock and resell devices to consumers, and casts a shadow over a bill that could have helped free your mobile from the convoluted mire of US copyright law.
Proponents of the change argue that it won't prevent the bulk sale of locked or previous unlocked phones - and it passed with a strong majority - but the change was significant enough to dissuade several previously supportive representatives from voting for the bill. "There needs to be a market in unlocked phones," Democratic Representative Jared Polis said, describing the late change as a "poison pill" for consumer advocates. Hopefully, the bill will see more positive tweaks on the floor of the Senate.

Samsung's device lineup may still be heavily dominated by Android, but change is in the air. Tizen, the open-source OS it jointly develops with Intel, powers the company's three new Gear wearables, and smartphones are coming later this year. We got the chance to play with Samsung's latest Tizen phone prototype, which runs a customized build (version 2.2.1) of the platform, allowing us to see what's changed since the last time we saw a Samsung developer handset. While there's still plenty of similarities between the prototype and what we've seen in the past, Samsung's worked to incorporate parts of its Android design language, particularly in the apps drawer, notification tray and homescreen widgets. Not only do they look better, each of the elements are more feature rich than before, offering users greater control over the device and making it feel like a complete platform. The company insists the platform isn't designed to replace Android, affirming that it forms part of its "multi-OS strategy," but given its recent wearable overhaul, we'll never say never. Check out the hands-on video below to see what a Samsung mobile future without Google could possibly look like.

If you've ever wanted to know how the iPhone 5s' Touch ID fingerprint security works beyond a basic overview, you'll be glad to hear Apple has just delivered a motherlode of new details. An updated version of its iOS Security white paper (PDF) explains much of what happens to your finger data after you touch the sensor. In short, your information may be more hack-resistant than it seems at first glance. Each A7 chip has a unique secure space that neither the A7 nor Apple can read, and every authentication session is encrypted end-to-end. The company is also offering a deeper explanation of what it does with your fingerprint image, noting that the print only lasts in memory until it's turned into a decryption key. As we've known for a while, there are safeguards that wipe out that key after 48 hours of inactivity, a reboot or five failed login attempts. While the new insights will only have so much usefulness when developers can't use Touch ID for their own apps, they suggest that there's little to no chance of fingerprint theft or alarge-scale data breach.

Registration will be available through EE, Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse.
This was probably one of the most anticipated bits of news to emerge from MWC this – even compared to Samsung’s additions to its smartwatch range.
Fans of the Galaxy family have been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the next flag ship device, and no sooner had the Galaxy S5 been mentioned it then immediately went on to breaking its first record, receiving more than 100,000 pre-registrations.
The schemes launched by EE, Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse were put in place to prevent any chance of a shortage in devices compared to demand – however we are not sure if they expected this kind of manic reaction.
Those desperately wanting to get their hands on a device must remember though the pre-registration is not a pre-order, and is only used to gage consumer interest.
If this interest will convert into sales, then Samsung’s new device could be breaking even more records in the coming months.
Samsung was the most tweeted about brand at Mobile World Congress this year, with 41,519 mentions.
