Waiting for the revamped Google Photos app to arrive on iOS? Well, the company has just rolled out an update on iTunes, but we're afraid it doesn't come with all the new features Mountain View promised at its Nexus event. The latest version for iPhones and iPads lets you share animations via Whatsapp, and if you're in the US, it gives you the power to label people and merge face groups. Similar to the Android version, you can easily search for the names of the people you labeled or even combine search terms (say, name + location) to find particular photos. However, it has one glaring omission: it's not Chromecast-enabled just yet. Google says that's "coming soon!" in its announcement post -- in the meantime, it has sprinkled in some bug fixes and added the ability to fire up the app faster.

Cupertino is set on improving its voice technology and virtual assistant, and is reportedly doing so by acquiring a UK-based startup that specializes in just that. Financial Times reports that Apple acquired VocalIQ, a company that builds virtual assistants using machine learning tech. One can easily surmise that Tim Cook & Co. were interested in VocalIQ's smarts to further boost Siri, but Apple may also be interested in help with either of its automotive efforts. GM was reportedly working on a system with VocalIQ that would learn a driver's intentions and vocabulary over time, taking cues that are more intuitive. With Apple having both CarPlay and Project Titan on the table, the company's plans could be focused solely on the driver's seat. That being said, we'll have to wait and see how the matters progress, but hopefully we won't have to wait until 2019 to get the details.
We've reached out to Apple for confirmation of the acquisition and will update this post when we hear back.

Leave it up to Apple to downplay a surprisingly useful engineering feat: A water-resistant iPhone. It turns out the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus sport a combination of new technology that makes them far more resistant to liquid damage than past iPhones, iFixit reports. Apple packed in a new gasket around the sides of the phone, and it incased every cable connector on the phone's logic board with a waterproofing material. Given that the logic board that includes most of the iPhone's sensitive electronics and is the most prone to water damage, Apple's solution is particularly clever. Most other water-resistant phones focus on protecting external ports, rather than internal electronics. While it's far from being truly waterproof, there are plenty of videos online models surviving water dunks. The truly strange thing is Apple has never mentioned the feature -- unlike Samsung and Sony, both of which championed water resistance as key features of some recent phones (though Samsung gave up on it for the Galaxy S6, and Sony is backtracking on its claims).

There have been Apple Car (or iCar) rumors since at least 2007. They usually involve the company teaming up with an automaker to design an iPod- or iPhone-ready vehicle. Nothing has ever come of all the speculation and it's probably for the best. When Apple teams up with another company, the results are rarely satisfying. Remember the train wreck known as the Motorola ROKR? Now it looks like Apple is finally forging ahead with its automotive plansaccording to reports. But it'll do so on its own and there will reportedly be a production vehicle ready in 2019. If true, it's a bold plan. Not because launching a vehicle in that short of a time frame is impossible. It's that the electric, semi-autonomous vehicle market will be pretty crowded come 2019. But Apple should be fine with that because entering a crowded market with its own twist on a product is what it does.

YouTube's kid-friendly app arrived earlier this year, delivering a library of age-appropriate content for younger viewers. Now, the streaming software is moving beyond mobile devices. YouTube Kids is now available on your television, streaming to Chromecast, Apple TV, game consoles and smart TVs. There's also new curated playlists from the likes of National Geographic Kids and tools for parents that help you learn the app and tweak the password. Perhaps most importantly, you won't have to give up your phone or tablet when junior wants to catch up on the latest episodes.

Remember that iOS 9 security issue that allows someone to bypass the iPhone lock screen using Siri and access your contacts and photos? And how some folks thought that it wasn't real? Well, Apple sure did, as the latest iOS 9.0.2 update includes a fix for the problem. Apple said that because of the security hole, "a person with physical access to an iOS device may be able to access photos and contacts from the lock screen." It addressed the issue by "restricting options on a locked device," meaning users will no longer be able to exploit Siri to access those areas.

Apps are continuing to trickle into Apple's wearable, with recent standouts including Airbnb, Google and...BlackBerry? The company once called RIM has announced Apple Watch support for its messaging service, BBM. When reading the product description on the iTunes store, you find that the companion app will allow you to share photos and voice notes, see when people are responding to your messages, and even offer groundbreaking features like delivered and read receipts. There isn't a wide variety of alternatives available on the Apple Watch at the moment -- with WhatsApp and Facebook messanger still missing from the app store -- but maybe there's a reason for that. What's your PIN? Let's discuss this some more through our wearables.

Google Maps for iOS has become a lot easier to use when you're in a hurry and quickly need to check how to get to your destination. The app now shows you all the possible ETAs for all the transportation types it supports in a single page, just like its Android counterpart. Simply ask the app for directions by typing in your location and where you want to go to whenever you need help in deciding whether you should hoof it, pedal it out, take the car or catch the next bus/train. The feature's live on the iOS app, and you can get it as soon as you download the latest update. By the way, if you have an Apple Watch, you can now also get directions right on your wrist.

Microsoft has already done a not-so-stellar job of keeping its upcoming Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones a secret, and it just erased whatever doubt was left. The company's UK online store briefly listed both of the unannounced Windows 10 flagships, confirming some of the devices' juiciest specs. As suspected, both Lumias will have Quad HD displays, 20-megapixel cameras and 32GB of expandable storage. The biggest difference is, as you might have gathered, the display sizes: the standard 950 will have a mid-sized 5.2-inch screen, while the XL bumps that up to 5.7 inches. The pricing was conspicuously absent (not surprising given the accidental listings), but there's a real chance that you'll get the full scoop on both handsets at Microsoft's eventnext week.

If you've used a Mac running OS X Mountain Lion or later, you're well-acquainted with Gatekeeper: it's the security measure that prevents unsigned apps from running unless you want them to. Unfortunately, it turns out that this first line of defense isn't quite as secure as it's supposed to be. Synack security researcher Patrick Wardle has discovered a flaw that lets malware get around Gatekeeper and do what it wants with your system. The trick 'hijacks' a signed app to pretend that it's legit, and uses clever file packaging to launch hostile code once OS X declares the host app safe. Wardle only used one app in a proof of concept demonstration, but other apps should work. You could even use malicious plugins (say, Photoshop add-ons) to bypass Gatekeeper.

After a number of teases, Samsung finally revealed its Tizen-driven Gear S2 smartwatch earlier this month at IFA. If you've been champing at the bit to purchase one, you'll soon have the chance to do so. The wearable goes on sale this Friday, October 2nd in the US. When it does, you can expect to nab one from Amazon, Best Buy and Macy's in addition to Samsung's own online store. If you're in need of a refresher, there's two models to choose from, the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic, which are priced at $300 and $350, respectively. The difference? The Classic sports a classier look in a smaller size with a black leather strap and a bit more detail around that rotating bezel. If you're willing to hold out for the 3G version, it's set to arrive "later this fall" on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Sure, Apple Maps has improved significantly in the past few years since it launched, but for many Apple users it still doesn't hold a candle to Google Maps. But if you're an Apple Watch user who wanted to use your watch for directions, Apple Maps has been your only option -- until today. A new update for Google Maps on iOS rolled out today that includes full Apple Watch support, among some other useful features.

Even though HTC isn't a maker of the new Nexus devices with Marshmallow, it'll definitely be one of the first to release its own phone running on the latest Android build. According to the company's announcement, its upcoming product will be launched on October 20th, and you can tune in to the live-stream (12:00 noon ET / 5:00 pm UK) on its website. There's no indication as to whether we can expect this to be the leaky "Aero" aka "A9," but we'd like to think that the coal on HTC's flyer is hinting at the model's "carbon gray" color option. Guess we'll find out in three weeks' time.

Anxious to know when Android 6.0 Marshmallow will reach your existing devices? Google is more than happy to oblige. Existing Nexus devices will start getting Marshmallow next week, including the 5, 6, 7, 9 and Player. And of course, if you spring for the shiny-new Nexus 5X or 6P, you'll get Marshmallow right out of the box. There's no word on third-party device updates just yet, but we'd expect news from some manufacturers in the near future. Be prepared to wait longer than Nexus owners, though -- other companies' customized takes on Android typically require more time in the oven.

If you have data plan with a cap, it's probably a good idea to dive into iOS 9'sSettings and turn off WiFI Assist. The feature switches an iPhone's data connection to the mobile carrier when it's experiencing shoddy WiFi. If you have an unlimited data plan, it's great --it ends the need to turn off WiFi when the local connection goes south and you can no longer load that hilarious goat video you found. It's not so great, however, when you have a pretty low data cap and it switches from WiFi to cell without your knowledge. If you're part of the latter group, head to Settings > Cellular then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to turn off WiFi Assist to keep your mobile carrier from taking all your money on your next bill.

Apple's iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were two of the most highly anticipated smartphones to launch so far this year. The excitement surrounding Apple's new refresh cycle flagships was so great that Apple reported record first weekend sales, with 13 million devices finding their way to customers. However, it appears that some of those customers are having a puzzling issue with their brand new iPhones. Owners are reporting that their phones are turning off randomly when left alone — even when the smartphones have sufficient battery remaining. "New Phone 6s 128GB turned off for no reason the last two nights," wrote Joachim Frey in an Apple discussion thread. "In the morning you then have to push the power-on button for a long time to get it started."

QuarksLAB, a security research company, has stumbled upon two kernel vulnerabilities for Samsung Galaxy S4 devices, which Samsunghas decided to patch only for recent devices running Android Lollipop, but not Jelly Bean or KitKat. The two vulnerabilities (kernel memory disclosure and kernel memory corruption) were discovered in February 2014 and reported to Samsung in August 2014, affecting the samsung_extdisp driver of Samsung S4 (GT-I9500) devices. Bugs break ASLR and lead to denial of service (DoS) state or even elevating attacker privileges.

Apple fans are used to getting the latest and greatest before others, from apps all the way through to, uh, U2's latest album. But, they've also had to learn how to be patient, for instance, when it took several years before the Beatles released their back-catalog onto iTunes. That's why it's a red letter day forHarry Potter fans, since Apple has signed an "exclusive" detail with JK Rowling's people. For the first time, the digitally-enhanced versions of the world-famous novels are available on iBooks complete with high-quality illustrations and animations. The texts are still on sale at the official Pottermore website, but should you want to read them on your iPhone or iPad, you can grab each one for $9.99 a pop.

While Apple previously said it would officially launch the revamped Apple TVthis month, you might not actually see it until November, reports 9to5Mac. Sources tell the site that the new set-top box won't be hitting Apple stores until next month, and while it may still pop up for online orders later this month, online shoppers will probably have to wait until November to receive it, as well. Though it was unveiled alongside the iPhone 6S and iPad Pro, the new Apple TV feels like the most interesting Apple device this season. That's probably because we've been waiting so long for a legitimate upgrade to the 2012 Apple TV (it's hard to imagine it took Apple that long to add 1080p) support. The new set-top finally adds an App Store, and it runs a new operating system dubbed tvOS (an iOS spinoff). It also comes with a an upgraded remote that adds a touchpad (no more clicking that darn circle pad) and voice control.

The Chromecast app for iOS no longer has a sad, bare interface, now that themajor overhaul Android users have been enjoying for weeks has arrived. Since it's the same update Google released for its homegrown platform the same time the new Chromecast was announced, it comes with the new "What's On" and "Get Apps" tabs. The former shows popular and trending content from the apps you already have on your device (like movies and TV shows on Netflix and Hulu), while the latter shows you lists of Cast-enabled applications you can get. It also comes with a Search function that you can use to easily find titles from compatible apps. The update's now out on iTunes and ready to download and install, even if you only have the older media streaming stick instead of the shinier and rounder 2015 version.

Android Lollipop is enjoying its last, shining moment in the sun beforeMarshmallow arrives in earnest. Google's not-quite-current operating system now accounts for 23.5 percent of active Android users, a healthy 2.5-point boost from what you saw just one month ago. That's still trailing behind Jelly Bean (30.2 percent) and KitKat (38.9 percent), but it's clear that all those new devices and upgrades are starting to add up. The real question is whether or not that momentum will last. Marshmallow is arriving relatively quickly, and shouldn't suffer from the early performance and battery life woes that kept some people from upgrading last year. If the newer release catches on quickly, Lollipop might not reach the lofty adoption rates of its predecessors.

What, you thought the Microsoft news would end once the keynote from theWindows 10 Devices showcase did? Guess again because Redmond's latest operating system hits existing mobile phones starting in December -- the outfit said as much on its Lumia Facebook page. However, as Winbeta notes, it's going to be up to carriers to actually push the updates out to your handset. A way to sidestep that, of course, is by signing up for the Windows Insiderpreview program. Is your device going to get the update? That's a little iffy. First off, it needs at least 8GB of internal storage, and then it needs to be running Lumia Denim (system version 8.10.14219.341) to be eligible. So if you have a low-end Lumia you might be left wanting.

The News app in iOS 9 is officially available only in the US, but you can still access stories when you're traveling abroad... unless you're visiting China, that is. A New York Times source understands that Apple has completely disabled News access in China, preventing you from reading anything new even if you're using one of the country's few uncensored connections on a US device. Apple hasn't commented on why it's switching things off, but the theory is that it would rather turn off News access altogether than deal with the many hasslesof censoring individual sources and articles.

Overcast is widely considered to be the best podcast app on iOS, if not all mobile platforms. For many, its no-nonsense interface and slick features (such as cutting dead air and boosting voices) make Apple's official app seem crude. You've had to pay $5 to see everything it has to offer, though... until now. App creator Marco Arment (he of Instapaper fame) has released Overcast 2, which switches to a completely free business model. As he puts it, he didn't like seeing the majority of users (80 percent) miss out on the features he wrote -- he'd rather make sure you see everything. You can still donate $1 per month if you want to help, but that contribution is strictly optional.

Apple has removed several ad-blocking apps from its Store that created a risk of "man-in-the-middle" security breaches. While Apple now permits ad-blockers for Safari, the banned apps also block ads from native apps by installing their own "root certificates" and shunting all traffic through a VPN. From there, they read the unencrypted traffic and remove ads, provided you enable the feature. As spotted by Techcrunch, one of the apps Apple removed was "Been Choice," software that even removed ads from Apple's own News app. However, it was also gathering "behavioral data" and sharing it with other companies, offering users points and cash rewards in exchange.

The dedicated Facebook Messenger app Apple promised for its wearable's latest operating system, the watchOS 2, is finally here. So long as you've already installed the updated platform, you can start using third-party apps on your Apple Watch, including the social network's messaging application. Since the watchface is too small to type on, the app lets you send and receive voice clips, stickers, Likes and emojis -- abbreviated interactions that suit a tiny display. Facebook also upgraded the app to show your Messenger contacts and conversations via spotlight search on iOS 9 and to work with the iPad's multi-tasking capabilities.

A few days ago, it was revealed that the A9 chip in Apple's new iPhone 6s is manufactured by two different companies, Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC). More notably, reports started circulating that the battery life in the Samsung A9 devices was notably worse than that of the TSMC iPhones. Some tests have revealed that the TSMC chips last as much as two hours longer than the phones with Samsung silicon inside. Now, Apple has issued an official response that downplays the difference as only a matter of a few percentage points.

Games that have been removed from Apple’s App Store appear to be once again showing up in user’s purchase history.
However, the truth behind Apple’s policy change – if indeed there has been one – remains uncertain.
It was reported earlier this week that apps that have been removed from sale for whatever reason (typically bug or iOS compatibility fixes) were also no longer available to redownload – something that until now has not been the case.
Apple even went as far as to confirm that "if [developers] remove their apps from the store, they cannot be redownloaded until the app has been resubmitted to the App Store".
However, Pocket Arcade reports that Apple appears to now be singing a different tune. While the company initially reiterated the policy change to Touch Arcade in a now removed tweet, it subsequently stated that in fact its original practices were still in place.
If true that means it will continue to host backups of apps even if they have been pulled from sale unless a developer specifically requests otherwise. This is certainly supported by the reappearance of at least some titles that were for a period completely unavailable.
So, a case of different entities within the vast Apple empire getting confused? Or has the criticism of the policy forced a change of heart? Perhaps we’ll never know.

BlackBerry has opened-up pre-orders for its first ever Android smartphone, thecurved-screen slider that's better known as the Priv. The move comes just a day after the spec list was leaked on the company's site, although the price that was included in the listing turned out to be a red herring. In fact, American BlackBerry fans will be able to pre-order the device for $699 starting from today, with delivery expected on November 6th. Canadians, meanwhile, can plonk down $899 CDN to get the device in their home country, while UK users are expected to stump-up Ł559 ($857) for the same deal.

It turns out that the cheaper of Google's two new Nexus Marshmallow devices,LG's Nexus 5X, is a cinch to repair, according to iFixit. The 5.2-inch, $379 device can be taken apart with a Philips screwdriver, and many of the parts are then user replaceable, including the "Imprint" fingerprint sensor, camera and battery. One bit that isn't DIY-friendly is the high-speed, fast-charging USB-C port, since it's soldered to the motherboard. The display is also fused, meaning that you'll need to replace the whole unit if you break either the LCD or cover glass. Overall, however, it scored a decent seven on the repairability scale. Not that Android purists needed more incentive than "$379."

On top of the big changes coming with Android Marshmallow, Google is also forcing Android device makers to be more transparent about battery usage on all of their devices. Specifically, Google notes that devices "MUST be able to track hardware component power usage," as well as attribute usage to individual apps, according to the Marshmallow Compatibility Definition Document. Up until now, some Android manufacturers have been able to obfuscate certain battery details, allowing them to potentially hide components or apps that could be draining battery life. The change will hopefully lead to more power efficient Android phones and tablets down the line. If anything, it's surprising it's taken this long for Google to clamp down on Android battery stats.

The Gear S2 is one of Samsung's best smartwatches to date, combining a sleek design and a unique rotating bezel for navigation. The Tizen timepiece has its flaws -- the app selection is a little sparse, for instance -- but it's an intriguing device that's now headed for the UK. From November 12th you can pick up the standard model for Ł249, which comes with a dark grey or silver case. Alternatively, you can pay an extra Ł50 for the snazzier Gear S2 Classic, which features a notched bezel and a dressier leather strap. For comparison, the second-gen Moto 360 starts from Ł229 and the Apple Watch Sport begins at Ł299. If you're already sold, you can pre-order it online from October 29th -- and if you're unsure how it'll look on your wrist, you can always try it on using augmented reality.

Facebook users on iOS have had a sneaking suspicion that the app was starting to misbehave, to the detriment of their phone's battery life. After saying it was looking into the issue, Facebook has now confirmed the problem and pushed out an update to the iOS app to help offer some relief. Facebook engineering manager Ari Grant said as much in a post today on (where else) Facebook, saying that the company "found a few key issues and have identified additional improvements, some of which are in the version of the app that was released today." While there's more Facebook says it can do to lessen battery draing, updating the app today should provide some immediate relief.

With iOS 9, Apple introduced a handful of new multitasking features for the iPad, like the ability to run two apps side by side. Now Google's Chrome browser is ready to take advantage of these, thanks to an refreshed version of its universal iOS application. Aside from being able to use the Split View mode mentioned earlier, Chrome on iPad also supports Slide Over, as shown above; and Picture-in-Picture, which lets you browse websites and watch a pop-up video simultaneously. That said, Split View only works on iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4and the soon-to-be-released iPad Pro, but the other tidbits are compatible with any tablet running Apple's latest mobile OS.
Update: According to Google's Chrome blog, the iOS version has another treat for both iPhones and iPads with the addition of Autofill, just like you see on the desktop version.

Despite being an overall strong first quarter for Microsoft, its mobile side is still hurting. Phone sales fell 54 percent over the last few months, "reflecting our updated strategy," the company announced in its earnings report. It's not hard to see why, though: Microsoft basically didn't have much to sell over the past few months. Its flagship Windows 10 phones, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, were only announced this month, after the quarter ended. All it was left with over the summer was mid-range and low-end phones, which weren't exactly enticing in the face of an onslaught of new smartphones throughout 2015. At least there's nowhere to go but up for Microsoft's phones now (we hope).

You don't need perfect vision to see that HTC's latest smartphone, the One A9, is nearly identical to Apple's iPhone 6 and 6s. But the Taiwan-based company swears Apple copied its design first, not the other way around, pointing to itsOne M7 and M8 flagships as proof -- both came out before the iPhone 6 series. According to Want ChinaTimes, during a recent press briefing in Taiwan, HTC's North Asia President Jack Tong responded to claims calling the A9 an iPhone clone. "We're not copying. We made a unibody metal-clad phone in 2013 [the year the M7 was released]," he said. "It's Apple that copies us in terms of the antenna design on the back."

As part of iOS 9, Apple introduced its own news curation app called News (an unimaginative name, but it's straight to the point at least). Like Flipboard, Google Play Newsstand and others, it's designed to collect the best online journalism and present it in a simpler, more beautiful way for readers. Apple device owners in the US were able to check it out straightaway, but so far device owners in the UK have been left out in the cold. Well, that's all changing today. iOS 9.1 is rolling out now and, as expected, it comes bundled with a tweaked Apple News app for Brits featuring some UK-specific journalism.

Fossil has taken its sweet time getting its self-branded smart wearables ready, but they're finally here... well, almost. The fashion brand has unveiled Fossil Q, a wristwear series with Intel's connected tech under the hood. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the Q Founder (above), its long-expected Android Wear smartwatch. The circular, stylish accessory looks much as it did when it first appeared this summer. However, it now ties into a special app that both keeps tabs on fitness and promotes "curiosity" -- basically, reminders to shake up your routine. It arrives this holiday for a not-too-pricey $275.

Apple's widely rumored electric car may not be fully autonomous, but it may well have some smarts. The company has hired Jonathan Cohen, who until this month was the director of NVIDIA's deep learning division -- in other words, a form of artificial intelligence. Cohen's LinkedIn profile only mentions that he's working on a nebulous "software" effort at Apple. However, his most recent job at NVIDIA centered around technology like Drive PX, a camera-based autopilot system for cars that can identify and react to specific vehicle types. While there's a chance that Cohen could be working on AI for iOS or the Mac, it won't be surprising if he brings some self-driving features to Cupertino's first car, such as hands-off lane changing or parking.

The Department of Justice is trying to get Apple to unlock a defendant's iPhone. While Apple has stated that it can technically bypass the phone's passcode security, it has so far refused to do so for various reasons. So the DOJ has come up with a new strategy, force Apple to comply because it licenses the software on the phone. Because of that, the DOJ contends that the iPhone maker actually has a relationship with the phone that's currently evidence in a case. In a reply to Apple's response to the court order to unlock the phone, the government states, "Apple cannot reap the legal benefits of licensing its software in this manner and then later disclaim any ownership or obligation to assist law enforcement when that same software plays a critical role in thwarting execution of a search warrant." In other words, it's your software Apple, not the defendant's, unlock it.

Surprisingly, says Ars Technica's review of Amazon's $50 Fire tablet, it doesn't suck. "There's simply very little reason to spend more when you can get 90 percent of the functionality for a fraction of the price," writes Mark Walton. "The only real niggle right now with the Fire Tablet is the display (and the camera, if you really want to take photos with your tablet). Once budget tabs start coming with 1080p displays as standard, the writing really will be on wall. For now, the Amazon Fire Tablet is the budget tablet to beat." How does cheap technology like this mesh with Bill Gates's dream of putting a computer in every home, and projects like OLPC? Beyond that, any thoughts on what a $50 tablet price point might inspire in education, gaming, and other areas?

A class-action suit has been filed against Apple in U.S. District Court over Wi-Fi Assist being turned on by default in iOS 9. Wi-Fi Assist is designed to switch to cellular data when a user is trying to perform an action over the internet on a poor Wi-Fi signal. This has the natural side effect of using cellular data. Since iOS 9 turned it on for many users, they weren't necessarily expecting that extra use, causing some of them to exceed their data caps. A former Apple employee who was in a leadership position for Mac OS X Wi-Fi software has commented on the issue, saying that the Wi-Fi Assist mess was unavoidable given how Apple's management treats that part of the business.
Quoting :"[O]ne particular directorial edict which I pushed back against at the end of my tenure sticks out as not just particularly telling, but deeply misguided: 'Make it self-healing.' Self healing in this context meaning that the networking system, Wi-Fi in particular, should try to correct problems that caused the network to fail, which, if you have spent any time trying to diagnose networking issues is a clear misunderstanding of the issues involved. ... Asking the devices which connect to this vast complex network of networks to detect, and then transparently fix problems in the infrastructure without the permission of the administrators is, well, it's absolutely the pinnacle of buzzword driven product management. Real pointy-haired boss territory."

Google doesn't want YouTube Gaming to be populated solely with videos from consoles and PCs. It's rolling out a feature in the Google Play Games app that lets you record 480p or 720p footage from any Android game that supports the Google Play framework. All you do is pick the game from the GPG app and start capturing -- when you're done, you can edit the clip before sending it YouTube's way. You can have it record your on-camera reactions, too, if pure gameplay isn't entertaining enough. Only US and UK gamers will have access to recording in the next few days, but more countries are coming "soon after."

Microsoft's Outlook mobile apps got a solid revamp last year, thanks to its acquisition of the email app Acompli. Now, it's ready to integrate the spoils of another mobile acquisition: the calendar app Sunrise. The latest versions of the Outlook apps, launching on iOS today and Android in November, feature several design updates that would be familiar to Sunrise users. The calendar portion of the app now has a daily view that puts all of your activities in an easily scrollable list, and event entries now display their relevant information more clearly. On the email side of things, event invites are highlighted in your inbox, and you can even RSVP to them without opening up the message. For most users, these sorts of changes will be subtle experience upgrades, but it's nice to see Microsoft integrate some of the design elements that made people fans of Sunrise. The new app also makes it clear what Microsoft is trying to do with Outlook on mobile: Bring all of the best design decisions from disparate apps into a single location. (One email app to rule them all, yadda yadda...)

After being teased and leaked multiple times over the past few weeks, Samsung today officially revealed its supersized 18.4-inch tablet, the Galaxy View. As you might expect, the company's pegging this as the perfect device for people who consume heavy amounts of media -- you know, through Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go and other streaming services. Aside from its absurdly large screen, which features a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, the Android-powered Galaxy View comes with a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, an undisclosed 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD). There's also a nano-SIM slot for LTE connectivity, while the decent 5,700mAh battery promises up to 8 hours of video play. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn't announced pricing or availability yet, but we'll likely learn those details in the coming days.

At last, Apple Pay will be available outside of the US and the UK... if you have the right credit card. Tim Cook used his company's fiscal results call to confirmthat the tap-to-pay service will be available in Australia and Canada by the end of 2015, while Hong Kong, Singapore and Spain will get it in early 2016. However, it sounds as if you'll be limited to using an American Express card at first. Despite leaks, you probably won't be using any other account for iPhone-based purchases on launch. It's likely that other providers will get with the program, though, so don't despair if you prefer MasterCard or Visa.
