Although the 30-pin Dock connector in the iPhone 3G looks the same as it has since it was introduced in the 2G iPod, it's different in one important (and maddening) way -- it doesn't support charging the older FireWire charging pins, only the newer USB method. That means a whole host of older chargers and docks don't work with the iPhone 3G -- and it also means that we'll be seeing a lot of adapters like this one from Ridax make the scene. Hopefully other manufacturers won't see fit to charge a whopping $40 for two connectors and a resistor like Ridax, but if you're desperate enough to drop two Jacksons on this thing, you'll also be able to charge through the built-in mini-USB connector on the side. We'll wait, though -- we expect to see some cheaper, smaller options on the table by the time this thing ships in September.

We already knew that Id Software co-founder John Carmack was on board with the iPhone to some extent, but at the now-happening QuakeCon 2008 in Dallas he's revealed just how impressed with the device he really is. According to Apple Insider, while Carmack admits that graphics memory could be a limiting factor, he describes the phone's hardware as equivalent to a Dreamcast and almost on par with a PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox. He also sees it as far superior, at least in terms of raw specs, than the two big dedicated handheld consoles out there, saying that is "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined." Unfortuantely, he didn't have any actual games to show off, but he did at least confirm that Id has two "tentative titles" in the works, including a "conventional mobile game," and one that pushes the iPhone's graphics capabilities.

Well, who knows what's going on here, but Nullriver's Netshare iPhone tethering app has made a reappearance for download by direct link only in the App Store, after getting unceremoniously yanked last night. It won't show up in searches, but you can still get it if you know the link -- that's a bit odd. Nullriver told Macrumors that it doesn't believe the SOCKS proxy violates any of the App Store SDK restrictions, and that while AT&T has tethering restrictions for its 3G network, other carriers around the world don't, making the app legit in its opinion. Looks like Apple's agreed -- for now. We did a quick hands-on video last night, check it out after the break.

While the iPhone 3G definitely feels warmer than the original, it shouldn't get hot enough to cook human flesh. Or melt. But a MacRumors forum member says he fell asleep with his iPhone 3G in his pocket and woke up when he felt a burning sensation in his pants (not the good kind either). He says he pulled out the phone, which was incredibly hot. Like, plastic-meltingly hot. Check out the damage to the dock connector (and his leg), where you can really see the bubbly, heat-warped plastic:

John Carmack is bummed. The iPhone App Store is live and there's not a single id game on it.
"John is pretty disappointed we didn’t have the manpower and resources to have a game for the launch of the" app store, id CEO Todd Hollenshead said.
Hollenshead said that Carmack and other id folks had been playing around with the iPhone SDK for awhile, but that the developer's small in-house mobile team just didn't have the time to put together a game in time.
"It appears that at this point that given the size of our team, we can only work on one mobile game at a time. We are probably partner up and the first (iPhone game) will be one where we work with a publishing partner."
Already the team is working on both Wolfenstein RPG and Doom 2 RPG for mobile phones, both of which id Software would like to bring to the iPhone, Hollenshead said.
"We have ambitions to have both on the iPhone," he said, "but it's too early to say if that's going to happen at this point."
As much as id seems to like the idea of iPhone gaming, they're taking a caution approach, but not for the reasons you'd think.

from the pandora developer blog
Just to catch up, here are some of the updates for July:
- Final AV connector has been selected. It has enough pins to support line level inputs and outputs, TV output, UART, power and some GPIOS. It has 14 pins but looks like a larger USB OTG port so it has a lot of strength for hanging cables off of it.
- The new analog nubs will be showcased on final pre-production PCBs in August. They are all black with 2mm of travel in each direction. They have a nice smooth travel, but no center click. It was debatable whether this feature would have been a pain due to accidental pressing anyway. The nubs have a large 15mm diameter disc with a concave surface. Their position in the Pandora has remained the same as before due to some constructive negotiations with the nub manufacturer.
- Wifi/BT is now integrated into the final pre-production PCB. Software testing will begin in August.
- Several emulators that run on the GP2X have been ported over to Pandora to show that they work and that everything you have come to enjoy up to this point will carry over with no trouble, and in many cases (where needed), run faster.
- Early testing of the battery at 500MHz, full screen brightness, audio section powered but not providing sound, and no power management has yielded 8.5 hours before the system shut down. A lot of software can run at slower speeds, plus screen brightness control and power management should make 10 hours an easy reality.

It has technically been available for three weeks today (and a few hours in the US, but who's counting?), although we're confident quite a few of you are still waiting to actually hold your very own iPhone 3G. Still, those that have braved the excruciatingly long lines and got lucky with AT&T's apparently random Direct Fulfillment approach surely have something to say. We've already confirmed that firmware 2.0 has some serious issues that need dealt with, and aside from elaborating on those, what else would you have done differently with Apple's second handset? Would you have changed the overall design more dramatically? Finally included a user-removable battery? Used a casing material that wouldn't crack for no good reason under pressure? There's still time for your input to be heard before firmware 2.1 arrives (ahem, Apple?) -- sound off below!

Apple's deal with AT&T obviously got re-done in order to get the iPhone 3G on the street for a subsidized $199, but it looks like Steve gave in on a little more than revenue-sharing when he re-upped with Ma Bell: USA Today says that AT&T's US exclusive on the iPhone has been extended for an additional year, until 2010. The extension isn't officially announced, but it's being cited in the context of a long interview with AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, who's quoted as saying things like "The iPhone has repositioned AT&T as the premier wireless brand in the world." So yeah, dude's a fan -- and with iPhone customers spending almost double on rate plans than the average AT&T customer, it's not hard to see why. Looks like our dream of glorious data plan price wars will have to wait until Android makes a splash later this year.

When he isn't dabbling in rocket science, id Software's John Carmack is one of the world authorities on 3D graphics programming. Carmack, who recently revealed that he is turning his talents to Apple's iPhone (the graphics ones, not the rocketry smarts) for a "graphical tour de force," has provided his two cents on just how powerful the cell phone personal media device really is.
During an on-stage appearance at QuakeCon 2008, the man who's tinkered with every graphics tech under the sun likened the polygon-pushing capabilities of iPhone to that of Sega's late, great Dreamcast. Taking the comparison to more current game hardware, he stated that iPhone is "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined," perhaps even nearing the capabilities of the PS2 and original Xbox. Given his statements, we're even more eager to see the two projects id is developing for the device, a "conventional mobile game" and the aforementioned visual show stopper.

We've been wondering how the people behind NetShare get their app approved by Apple for the iPhone App Store. It adds the ability to tether your laptop to your iPhone, using the handset's 3G modem as your laptop's own, meaning you can go pretty much anywhere you can find a decent signal and have full Internet access on your laptop without Wi-Fi, all for free. And then the app was pulled from the store. And then it was back. And now it's gone again. Hopefully you were lucky enough to grab it while it was available, because we're not sure Apple's going to let it out again.

Windows Mobile and S60 users get an update to Google Maps this week that includes public transit stops as well as user star ratings for local businesses. The free upgrade shows not just where stops are for particular transit lines but also allows you to incorporate them into building your route. Blackberry users have had this functionality for a few weeks now and it's likely a feature that will be updated for most other mobile operating systems in the next few weeks.

Surely you feel like buying an all new TuneCast Auto just months after picking up the original, right? Trust us, we can hear the groans from here. For the scads of iPhone 3G owners who are downright perturbed by the inability to charge the thing with some older accessories, you'll be none too pleased when handing over $79.99 for this. But unless you flex your DIY muscle and come up with some other solution (please share, will you?), buying an iPhone 3G-friendly alternative looks to be the only solution. This FM transmitter boasts ClearScan technology in order to hunt down and lock into the best FM frequency (good luck with that), but as we've already pointed out, the biggest boon is the iPhone 3G charging ability. Hey Apple, Belkin says "thanks." Whatever that means.

HTC's CFO reiterated that their Android phones—previously slated to be released Q4 of this year—will be released Q4 of this year. Android handsets are still planning to be shipped to "ODM clients" in the fourth quarter, meaning that you might not actually see them until late, late 2008 or early 2009. Why? Because those ODM clients, like T-Mobile or various other companies who are using HTC to design the base phone but customize it even more, need time to work their own add-ons in. So yes, on time might not mean on time for you to play with unless HTC releases an Android phone with the HTC branding, without going through secondary companies.

When Apple reinvented the paperclip for the famous SIM-eject tool, it was at least a free gizmo, included in the package. USBFever clearly thought there was a gap in this market though, and have reinvented the reinvention. The new SIM-eject tool has a rubber-bung top that allows it to be stored in your iPhone 3G's headphone socket ready to be whipped out at a moment's notice when you need to change the SIM card. Probably only for really frequent SIM-swappers who don't use headphones, though, since it will cost you $3.

As some of you already know, updating your iPhone to firmware 2.0.1 means that you've lost access to all your jailbroken apps. That's pretty much expected and should be rectified by the DevTeam soon enough. What's notable from an unlocking perspective, however, is that Apple's 2.0.1 release also updates the iPhone 3G baseband. This puts iPhone 3G owners in a bit of a quandary: update now via iTunes in desperate hopes of the stability and improved keyboard response we've been seeing but do so at the risk of not being able to unlock your iPhone 3G in the future (if and when the DevTeam gets around to releasing it for firmware 2.0).
A lot can happen in the course of a 2 year (or longer) carrier commitment. According to the DevTeam, you'll get all the benefits of Apple's 2.0.1 update (without the pesky new baseband) just as soon as they can kick out the updated PwnageTool (current version is 2.0.1) onto the Internets. Decisions, decisions.

New version of the Master System and Game Gear emulator for your cell phone.
Changelog:
- Ported MasterGear to Unix using the new EMULib framework. I will try to compile the new MG-Unix for as many Unix flavors as possible. At the moment, only Ubuntu Linux binaries are available.
- Ported MasterGear to Maemo OS2008 used in N800 and N810 internet tablets from Nokia. MG-Maemo is specifically optimized for internet tablets using assembler modules from MG-Symbian.
- Replaced -zoom/-nozoom command line options with -soft/-nosoft and made softening, scanline simulation, and synchronization options work on all relevant platforms (Unix, Maemo, MSDOS).
- Made [F8] toggle scanline simulation, while [SHIFT]+[F8] toggles softening.
- Removed -novsync option from MG-MSDOS, as -nosync does the same thing.
- Fixed situation when MG-Windows could stay in memory after being closed.
- MG-Symbian display routines rewritten in ARM assembler for speed. This should mainly affect UIQ3 users but S60 users will also benefit.
- Split MG-Symbian configuration menu into four tabs, making "Video" and "Audio" settings separate.
- Added "Audio Latency", "Skip Frames", and "Sync Updates" settings to MG-Symbian

via Mac Rumours
When Apple launched the App Store, they suggested that the use of DRM'd and signed applications could allow them to protect the iPhone from malicious applications and suggested that they could deactivate such applications remotely. Jonathan Zdziarski, author of iPhone Forensics, reveals (via iPhone Atlas) the remote url that Apple is using to keep a list of the offending applications:
https://iphone-services.apple.com/clbl/unauthorizedApps
This url appears to keep a list of black listed apps which appears to contain a test application name. Zdziarski explains:
“This suggests that the iPhone calls home once in a while to find out what applications it should turn off. At the moment, no apps have been blacklisted, but by all appearances, this has been added to disable applications that the user has already downloaded and paid for, if Apple so chooses to shut them down.
“I discovered this doing a forensic examination of an iPhone 3G. It appears to be tucked away in a configuration file deep inside CoreLocation.”
Note that this is very different from just removing an application from the App Store. In case of this black listing, Apple could presumably deauthorize applications already installed on every iPhone.
While Apple has been criticized lately for the removal of a number of App Store applications without explanation, those applications continue to work for those individuals who have already purchased the application. So far that list of prominent apps simply removed from the App Store include NetShare, BoxOffice and now I Am Rich (via Alley Insider).
We suspect Apple will reserve the use of this black list remote-deactivation for truly malicious apps, but even the unilateral removal of seemingly innocuous apps from the App Store has raised some criticism of Apple's editorial process.

It appears we can all breathe a big sigh of relief when it comes to our iPhone apps. According to John Gruber (Daring Fireball), that suspicious looking URL discovered in firmware 2.x which appeared to be set to deactivate applications may be something slightly more innocuous. According to Gruber -- via "an informed source at Apple" -- the "clbl" in the aforementioned URL stands for "Core Location Blacklist" and is actually used to stipulate that specific pieces of software don't have access to... you guessed it... Core Location. Gruber argues that this makes sense, as the API is covered by fairly strict rules in Apple's SDK. So it looks like (at a glance) this was much ado about nothing -- thanks to a little misinterpretation by Jonathan Zdziarski -- though we are considering getting hot under the collar that Apple reserves the right to deny Core Location access. How dare they?

Apple's experimented with allowing iTunes to stream over the internet as well as your LAN in the past and quickly removed the feature (probably due to RIAA pressure), so we're not placing too much stock in this, but AppleInsider's unearthed a patent that seems to describe a way to stream music over the 'net to your iPhone / iPod touch. The goal is to prevent you from having to selectively sync content to your device -- instead, you'd sync just the metadata and stream whatever you wanted direct from your machine as though it was all stored locally. There are some obvious problems here -- it wouldn't work if you didn't have service (or over EDGE, really), most home upstream connections aren't that fast, etc., etc., -- but it's certainly interesting, and a welcome addition to local storage if it ever makes the scene. In the meantime, how about working in some of those new UI elements from the Remote app into the iPod app?

Don't let Microsoft's tardiness in bringing its Live Anywhere initiative to market stop you from enjoying Xbox Live anywhere: if you've got an iPhone and $0.99 you can try out Nicholas Pike's iXboxLive app which "uses the Microsoft Xbox Community Developer SDK" to bring much of the functionality of your friend's list to your iPhone.
Sure, you could always load up your iPhone's browser (just like you do for Halo stats) and hop on Xbox.com but then you'd miss out on the slick iPhone formatting. However, use the app and you'll miss out on functionality like messaging, thanks to limitations in the aforementioned SDK. Now we're not expecting the cats at Microsoft to suddenly develop an official iPhone app, but we'd settle for something on Windows Mobile ... heck, we'd settle for a Zune app!

I don't think I'll ever understand the type of conspicuous consumption that produces junk like this: A leather iPhone case that's embedded with 272 diamonds (6.8 karats worth) fashioned into luxury goods purveyor Noreve's St. Tropez logo. The asking price is $14,990. You heard me right: $14,990 to keep your iPhone from scratching. The company's VP of sales, Sam Brust, says the case is “yet another step we are taking to help the Noreve brand become one of the most unique and recognized case manufacturers in the world,” which I feel like actually means “We are trying to make sure that anytime someone sees you with a Noreve product, the first thing that springs to their mind will be that super rich asshole.”

After Netshare was pulled for the second time from the App Store, there was a glimmer of hope it might return after the developer finally got in touch with Apple. Enter AT&T and their terms of service: "Plans (unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device...to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose." There is no tethering plan for the iPhone. But it's not that simple, either.

Yesterday, an analyst said that according to his sources, HTC is not having a jolly good time developing their Android headset, and it's probably going to be delayed 'til 2009. "Not so!" says HTC. They say that his facts do "not match the facts" and you will damn well see their Android phone by the end of 2008, which'll make them first to market with one. Glad that's cleared up! If you believe HTC, anyway (and we really want to).

An "informed source" at Apple has told Daring Fireball's John Gruber that the mysterious iPhone app blacklist striking fear in the hearts of iPhone-toting privacy nerds everywhere actually isn't for remotely disabling apps. Nope, it's actually a CoreLocation blacklist—in other words, a list of apps not allowed to access CoreLocation (which would be why it was buried there). So actually, it's protecting your privacy by keeping naughty apps from knowing where you are. Or something like that

Zodttd is back with another release for "Beta testers" only
While being a bit sick with a bad cold for the past week, I decided to get some work done on vlc4iphone. I have just released vlc4iphone v0.9.8 for firmware 2.0+ to beta testers.
vlc4iphone is a port of VLC to the iPhone and iPod Touch. It is a media player application that supports a wide variety of codecs, such as DivX/XviD, MP3, OGG, FLAC, MOV, WMV, FLV, etc. as well as streaming video and audio via HTTP, MMS, and (experimental) RTSP.
What's new in this version:
Now runs on firmware 2.0+.
Improved user interface.
Tons of bug fixes.
Added experimental support for RTSP streaming.
Improved playback performance in some decoders such as DivX/XviD.
Things to be aware of in this beta:
For some users there seems to be some issues with volume in this release. Either volume can't be changed, or there is a complete lack of volume. This is a high priority bug and I'm looking into it.
As i said above this release is for beta testers only but beta testers at the site have to donate to become a beta tester so in effect your paying for homebrew, if your happy to do that then see here

Sega and Apple has squashed any doubts over the iPhone's viability as a platform to make games for - the two have revealed that over 300,000 people have bought the Monkey Ball game for the device in just 20 days.
At $9.99 a pop, that works out to $3m revenue in less than a month - figures which legitimise the iPhone as a development platform, Sega's US boss says.
"That's a substantial business," Simon Jeffery, president of Sega America, told the Wall Street Journal. "It gives iPhone a justifiable claim to being a viable gaming platform."
The details come as part of a larger report which shows the AppStore has generated a huge $30m in sales in its first month.

While some complaints after any firmware update are to be expected, there seems to be a decided uptick in the number of reports of problems with the iPhone's GPS (ranging from general wonkiness to all out failure) after the most recent 2.0.1 update. As the responses on the MacRumors forums indicate, however, the problems are far from across the board (or confined to the iPhone 3G), and GPS problems haven't exactly been that rare of an occurrence before this latest update either. So, we'll open it up to you, dear readers -- have you had any newfound iPhone GPS problems?

Steve Jobs, presumably speaking from a hyperbaric chamber where he's being nourished with an infusion of liquefied developers-souls before his next public appearance, had a few interesting tidbits about the AppStore for the Wall Street Journal this morning. Namely, users have downloaded some 60 million programs for the iPhone representing sales of about $30 million since the launch last month -- a 30/70 revenue split between Apple and developers, respectively. "The thing's going to crest a half billion soon," Jobs added, "I've never seen anything like this in my career for software." He went on to say that phone differentiation is no longer about radios and antennas (or uh, battery life) but about software. Steve also confirmed the controversial iPhone application kill switch in the event that Apple inadvertently approves a malicious program for distribution. Jobs said, "hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull." As to the $999.99 I Am Rich application, the dubious download that displayed nothing but a glowing red gem, pulling that from the store was a "judgment" call. Sure, but that doesn't explain how it made it through the vetting process to begin with.

In the spirit of the Griffin Evolve, Smart Technology has released modular speakers that connect to your iPod/iPhone and can be stacked or spread however you'd like. Stack all three parts into the sky, or just lay 'em on your desk. Hell, if you're so bold, lay one and stack one. We're not here to tell you how to live your life, and for $129, you should at least get a say in this very small piece of the human experience.

Apple's new iPhone 3G has hit the 3 million sold mark, according to an analyst, following news from the company that 60 million programmes have been downloaded from its App Store.
The iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in its first weekend and now, according to analyst Michael Cote of the Cote Collaborative, it has reached the 3 million sold milestone only a month since its launch.
"They are seeing unprecedented demand," Cote told CNN. "The demand is so strong it may impact or delay the new countries coming on."
This news came as Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, used the first month anniversary of the iPhone 3G and the App Store to detail its success. More than 60 million programmes have been downloaded for the iPhone and iPod touch, which accounts for roughly 2 million downloads per day.
The revenue from those applications came to about USD 30 million - 70 per cent of which went to the developers, while Apple took a 30 per cent cut. It was also revealed that if the sales keep up at the current rate Apple will make at least USD 360 million a year.
"This thing's going to crest a half a billion, soon," Jobs told the Wall Street Journal. "Who knows, maybe it will be a USD 1 billion marketplace at some point in time... I've never seen anything like this in my career for software."

Hey, did you know that advertising misleads you? Like, products might not perform as exceptionally, look as hot or taste as yummy as they do in slickly produced ads? The iPhone 3G not cruising the internets as briskly as Apple's ads depict might be a big bucket of "duh," but this comparison video shows just how stark the contrast is—while Apple never promises your real world experience will be the same, it is sorta misleading. Like, it would trick my mom, and that's not cool.

After news of possible 3G driver/chipset shortcomings, many international iPhone carriers are bringing out the innocent, puppy-dog-eyed shoulder shrug regarding customer gripes with the iPhone's 3G performance. Both T-Mobile Netherlands and Vodafone Australia are the latest to go public with their passive-aggressiveness, much to Apple's delight.
Posting on its official blog [translated], T-Mobile Netherlands says "the 3G coverage of T-Mobile is as good as the competition, there can therefore not lie. We suspect that it is a hardware / software specific issue of the iPhone itself." CNET sees that "can not lie" bit as web babel-talk for a Dutch expression meaning "so that should not be the issue."
And in a Sydney Morning Herald story, Vodafone Australia also blamed Apple hardware for sucky 3G, saying “We are aware of the issues on the iPhone 3G and we’re working with Apple to provide a solution." Another anonymous source mentions the carriers had no time for device testing prior to launch, since they received handsets just one day before they were to go onsale.
It makes sense. International customers have been enjoying 3G for a lot longer than AT&T folks here in the U.S., so they're more likely to gripe if things don't meet standards set by other phones in the last few years.

iPhone gaming just got a shot in the arm with the release of Frotz, an interactive fiction (aka text adventure) app that's free to download. With it, iPhone owners can while away the hours with dozens of text-only games, getting lamps, facing north, being frozen by wizards... all that fun stuff! That means you have another opportunity to play Zork, Trinity or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy should the only high-def visuals you require be ultra smooth fonts.
Frotz, available via the App Store right now, comes with "several" built-in, public domain games. It also provides easy access to the Interactive Fiction Database, giving you nearly endless options for replayability. Get on it!

The Direct Marketing Association, a lovely group dedicated to forcing ads down your throat, have done a study that found that while a mere 7% of cellphone users are open to receiving ads on their phone, a much more significant 24% say they've responded to such ads on their phone. A whole quarter of the phone population responding to ads? That has advertisers salivating, so you know that phone ads will be the norm soon enough. So, lets say they came up with a deal that paid for half of your bill if you agreed to watch a few ads a day on your phone. Would you do it?

According to Businessweek, the solution to the iPhone 3G's chipset issues could be easier than most of us probably expected. They believe Apple has found a way to correct the problem with a simple software upgrade instead of a costly and annoying recall. Businessweek claims that Apple and chip maker Infineon are hard at work on the fix and it could be released as early as the end of this month.

Support forum threads on Apple's site and a number of ramblings across these great interwebs are starting to complain at great length about the iPhone 3G's headlining new feature -- 3G reception, that is -- and pretty much every aspect of it: signal strength, call dropping, connecting to EDGE when 3G is present, the list goes on. Some smartypants analyst from financial firm Nomura thinks he has it all figured out, saying that the issues are "typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack" and suggesting that a firmware update pushed out to existing handsets is unlikely to ease the pain. We've been hearing that Cupertino could actually be working on just such an update at this very second, though, so this cat better get ready for the possibility that he could be eating his own words down the road. For what it's worth, intermittent issues have been reported the world over, so this doesn't seem to be anything to do with AT&T's (or anyone else's) infrastructure -- and needless to say, not everyone is having issues to start. And for anyone whose iPhone 3G we just jinxed by writing this post... well, our bad

If you're fortunate enough to have access to a Premier (business, that is) account with AT&T, you're now able to forgo the charade of meandering down to your local store to buy -- or place an order for, more likely -- the iPhone 3G. All three varieties of the best cellphone Apple makes are now available directly through the carrier's B2B online store for the usual $199 / $299 pricing scale; if we had to guess, it's just a matter of time before they'll throw the doors open to the riff raff (read: us), too. We'll drink to that.
[Thanks, Vasudev R.]
Update: We touched base with AT&T, and it looks like the real news here is that Premier account holders who pay their own bills now have access to the iPhone 3G online, whereas before, only those whose bills were covered by their companies had access. The more, the merrier!

For those of you (we know, pretty much everyone in existence) who already picked up a set of Pink Pig PC speakers a few years back, you can carry on with your daily routine. For everyone else that owns an iPod, hold it right there. Speakal is delivering the iPod docking iPig, a unique speaker system that packs five total drivers (including a 4-inch subwoofer), adjustable bass controls, 360-degree sound distribution and a very debatable design. You'll also find a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack for hooking up every other source, and the bundled remote makes it easy to switch tracks and such from your sofa. The only problem? That $139.99 price tag.

This is TuneWiki, the music playback app that shows Karaoke-like lyrics and album art on almost all the music on your phone. It's been officially ported to Android and looks very very impressive. They've added features like searching YouTube for videos of your tracks, plus searching their database for certain song lyrics if you only remember caught a part of a song. There's also the built-in Google Maps API for looking at other people using TuneWiki and being able to see what people are listening to around a certain area. Yeah, we're pretty excited.

Pocket Gamer has the scoop on an upcoming iPhone game called Astro Ranch that's half Harvest Moon, half Animal Crossing—both games that require you to manage different resources on a day-to-day basis. We're not sure what other iPhone tech this would involve other than the panning for gold by shaking the camera like a prospector (and controlling the camera with your finger), but it will have multiplayer abilities insofar as you can exchange items and send presents to your buddies. This might just be the best iPhone game yet when it comes out in March 2009, but at the very least it'll be the best iPhone game that involves simulating a '49er.

The previously jailbreak-only Simplify Media has just hit the iTunes App Store, allowing you to stream your entire iTunes music library (plus up to 30 of your friends') to your iPhone. The official app has all the features of the old version, including album art, lyrics and artist bios, plus works over EDGE, 3G and Wi-FI. It's free for the first 100k downloaders, so we can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want to use this seeing as it gives your phone an essentially unlimited amount of storage space.

Hey Everyone! I've been getting LOADS of Emails asking questions about 2.0. Unfortunately for the last couple of months I have gotten so much email that I can no longer respond to it, so I'll just say this to everyone: iJailBreak does NOT work on 2.0. iJailBreak most likely does NOT work on 1.1.5. iJailBreak no longer works as a jailbreak anymore, due to outdated community sources. (Installer is broken) iJailBreak will not be updated in the near future. If you'd like to jailbreak/unlock 2.0, use the iPhoneDevTeam's new PwnageTool 2.0 here. If you have a problem, Google around for the solution, or post to one of the many iPhone/iPod touch related forums.

According to Appleinsider, the newest beta of iPhone firmware (2.1, beta 4) has been seeded to developers, but takes one crucial element off the table -- push notification. If you'll recall, the new feature will allow third-party developers to take advantage of Apple's servers for real-time push of data to and from applications. Apparently, the feature has been cut from the most recent beta for "further development" with no indication of when it will be reinstated. Of course, this is a beta seed of the firmware -- the actual release is slated for September -- and it makes sense that Apple would be tweaking major additions like this before going live, especially considering its recent launch debacles.

Of course, it all seems so obvious now! How did we not interpret El Jobso's true meaning of the iPhone kill-switch -- it actually kills you. We have noted iPhone expert Stephen Colbert to thank not just for this brilliant deduction, but also for sticking up for the lot of us and giving the iPhone 3G a cold staredown -- but not before declaring, "I knew I should have gotten a Zune! They can't kill me... or do anything else." Zing!
Zing! Clip after the break (iPhone at 5:45).

Sure, this video feels like it might veer into creepy snuff-film territory right at the beginning, but luckily it just reveals a fairly sweet looking iPhone mod. Apparently some Russian iPhone fans have replaced the regular, boring Apple logo on the back of an original iPhone with an eye-piercing, glowing version. There's not a lot of detail on how this is done -- and the video is in Russian -- but the source link claims it's just a matter of, "removing the aluminum 'fruits' and inserting the glowing ones." We'll see about that.

Super Monkey Ball is arguably the current zenith of iPhone tilt gaming. The gameplay involves navigating your bebubbled monkey through a series of elevated, edgeless mazes without letting him fall—it's fun, if repetitive. Nintendo’s Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is similar: The player guides Kirby through mazes using tilt-sensitive control, collecting stars along the way. Both games are entertaining, and both won positive reviews for nearly identical control schemes. So why is Monkey Ball getting all the attention? Well, for one, Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is only available for the the Game Boy Color. Oh, and it was released in 2001.
To be fair, Monkey Ball has improved a lot on its spiritual forebear, with lush, fully 3D graphics and over 100 well-designed levels. It superficially reflects a few generational steps forward in handheld gaming. One thing that hasn’t changed is the control mechanism. Consider this IGN review of Kirby from April of 2001:
This tilting feature is an integral part of the gameplay, and it really makes Kirby original and a lot of fun. The designers built the game around this sensor instead of putting a sensor into the game, and it really shows... Since you cannot zoom Kirby around the mazes without screwing up, patience is needed. Of course, you can't take your sweet time—the clock is ticking.
This could just as easily describe the experience of rolling AiAi around on your iPhone. The tilt sensor technology, built into the GBC cartridge, was functionally flawless, even by iPhone standards. The tilt-sensing scheme surfaced in a few more (equally impressive and well received) games, but none ventured too far from the navigation paradigm of Tilt 'n' Tumble. Over the next few years, position-sensitive handheld gaming faded into relative obscurity.
At least, until now. Tilt gaming is now lauded by some as the future of portables, with developers and engineers making inconsistent claims about how powerful and exciting the iPhone is as a platform, even throwing out very favorable comparisons to the PSP and the DS. But does the iPhone really bring anything new to the table? The answer, as you’ve probably guessed by now, is no. Absolutely not.
Think of it this way: The best implementation of iPhone tilt control is conceptually identical to a seven-year-old Game Boy title, which itself was based on the old wooden marble-in-a-labyrinth puzzles that have been around since, well, who knows? The iPhone doesn’t have the buttons of the Game Boy (or DS or PSP), and touchscreen control overlays don’t provide the feedback they need to be adequate substitutes. (Anyone who has played any of NES/SNES/Genesis jailbreak emulators can attest to this.) Perhaps most significantly, the iPhone doesn’t address the shortcomings of tilt gaming that were helpfully pointed out to them in nearly every review of Kirby. Consider again the 2001 IGN review:
You're limited to where and how you can play the game, really... I've played the game outside and in a hotel room with no problems, but on the plane it was a little difficult because of the position you have to hold the system — it's not exactly a game you can sit in your most comfortable position and play.
And another, from the New York Times:
Children who play Kirby in the back seat of the car will learn to loathe potholes and quick turns, which can make Kirby spin out of control.
In respect to the limited locations in which you can play tilt games, the GBC cartridge system is actually superior to the iPhone, as it automatically recalibrates at the start of every game, a feature that Monkey Ball could stand to include.
A portable gaming device that necessitates a certain type of location and position to play isn’t truly portable. Anyone who has tried to play any of the iPhone’s tilt games in a moving car, bus or even train will tell you that slight acceleration in any direction can make sensitive games like Crash Bandicoot Racing and Monkey Ball almost unplayable—and what good are handheld games if you can’t play them in transit?
Since the launch of the app store, nobody has come forward with a truly exciting and original implementation of tilt control. The iPhone has demonstrated that is it capable of retreading tilt gaming territory quite well, but that’s about it.
It sounds harsh to deem iPhone gaming a mere novelty, but until a developer steps forward with something profoundly revolutionary it may be just that. For the most accurate summation of the iPhone’s tilt gaming, don’t listen to John Carmack’s breathless speculation, or Scott Forstall’s eery, glossy-eyed presentations. Look back again, this time to Gamespot:
Yes, Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is a gimmicky game, but it's a gimmicky game done well.
For Nintendo, handheld tilt gaming was a fanciful tangent; when the genre was exhausted, they were able to retreat to traditional controls. This option is unfortunately—and maybe fatally—absent from the iPhone, potentially relegating it to the unfortunate status of a impressive, elaborate gimmick.

EA's version of Tetris was fine. There was nothing hugely wrong with it, except that $10 price. And since we've all paid for Tetris before on one platform or another, we'll gladly settle for the iPhone's free version of Tetris called Tris. Move pieces by sliding your finger back and forth and rotate them by tapping anywhere on the screen. The controls are quite responsive and, yes, the entire design feels like Tetris.

Here's an idea. Pick up a Street Fighter edition iPod nano. (We recommend Chun Li.) Then have it engraved "From Chun Li, thanks for being there through a difficult time." Bring it to school (don't let the teacher see it, of course) and bust it out at the lunch table nonchalantly, "What's this? Oh, just a little something I picked up from my girlfriend."

The HTC Dream may have already cleared the FCC, but at least one analyst that has actually seen the very first Android-based device, Moe Tanabian of IBB Consulting, says that it will only be hitting stores around Thanksgiving in November, and not September or October as many were expecting. He also says that its "unclear" whether the phone will support Microsoft Exchange or not (at least right out of the gate), and that users may have to rely on Gmail if they want to receive push email.
Among other tidbits, he also confirms that the device will have access to T-Mobile's own App Store-like service, and that it'll come with Google's advertising software pre-installed, which he says could not only lower the cost of the phone, but allow for lower monthly service fees as well. Of course, you'll have to take that with all the usual analyst caveats for the time being, but we're sure we'll be hearing plenty more to back it up or shoot it down before the September / October / November launch.

http://technews.in/news/nokia/nokia_..._n96_in_india/
This has definitely been the most awaited phone in India as far as Nokia are concerned. Lets just put aside the Apple iPhone 3G for the moment and concentrate on the new offering from Nokia.
The Nokia N96 comes with a 2.8 inch TFT screen which as a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. This means a neat 16 million colors display for your multimedia dreams. The phone runs on a Dual ARM 9 processor clocking 264 Mhz CPU speed. The phone has 16GB of internal memory which definitely is enough to compete with the Apple iPhone. The N96 comes with 128 MB RAM for faster program applications. If this 16GB of memory is not enough for you, there is a microSD card slot into which you can slot in your 8GB card and enjoy 24GB of movies and music.
Other features are top of the line data connectivity options like EDGE, HSDPA, GPRS and bluetooth A2DP. The phone adds on a 5megapixel camera to overtake itself in features against the iPhone.
Video calling is possible with the VGA camera in front of the phone. The phone has a 3.5mm headphone socket which acts as a TV out. FM Radio with a GPS chip built in the phone, 3D stereo speakers and a lot of bundled data comes with the phone.

Microsoft has officially halted the distribution of all Xbox Live-related iPhone applications via Apple's App Store -- not to quell creative coding, but instead to mandate that all such programs must be offered to users free of charge.
The creators of an application dubbed "1337pwn Friends List" that allows users access to their Xbox Live Friends List via Apple's multi-function handheld revealed the news this morning, as per a recent conversation they had with Microsoft's developer relations department.

Hopes were high that 2.0.2 would decisively crush the reception woes some iPhone 3G owners have experienced since taking delivery of their cracking beauties; dropped calls, latching onto EDGE reception when 3G (also known as "the good stuff") is available, and general signal strength wonkiness have all plagued a select group of handsets since launch, making for a decidedly MobileMe-like user experience. Some upgraders are actually reporting just the opposite, though -- for these lucky few, 2.0.2 seems to be making reception somehow worse than it already was, and what's more, there are intermittent reports cropping up of broken third-party apps, too. With the 1.x line of builds having chugged along with relatively little drama for a year, here's our question: what the hell is going on? Why does 2.0, after two post-launch builds, still feel like a beta? MobileMe took the lion's share of the fall for Apple having spread itself too thin through the launch-heavy summer months, but did some of that fire-drill mentality trickle over to the breadwinner, too? Sound off in comments with your experiences putting 2.0.2 through its paces so far!
Update: Apparently Steve Jobs, who should have his face buried in a developer workstation somewhere in Cupertino slaving away on iPhone bug fixes, somehow found the time to slack off for half an hour and fire off an email to some guy who wrote him complaining about third-party apps that are crashing on startup. Jobs allegedly says that the issue is a "known iPhone bug" and that it'll be fixed in the next update come September -- but frankly, we wish he'd let his assistants attend to this sort of needless communication so he could get back to, you know, writing code and inventing phones. Thanks, Alexander!

It has taken its sweet, sweet time in arriving, but it seems the iPhone Nike+ running application is just... about... here. A slew of new screenshots of the application have emerged, and while there are no juicy tidbits to accompany 'em (release date, cost, etc.), we all know how many lines of text a single snapshot is worth. Hang tight runners, the app you've been waiting (and waiting) for can't be far from the finish line now.

It's only taken a number of years and some seriously ruined pants -- but Apple has finally come clean on the flammable nature of the first-generation iPod nano, and is now offering to replace the faulty devices. After reports today that two more of the media players had lit up without warning in Japan, the company issued a statement admitting that the nanos do -- in fact -- have battery problems which cause them to smoke or spark and generally burn the hell out of things. In the company's words:
"Apple has determined that in very rare cases batteries in first generation iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 can overheat causing failure and deformation of the iPod nano. Apple has received very few reports of such incidents (less than 0.001 percent of first generation iPod nano units), which have been traced back to a single battery supplier. There have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage, and no reports of incidents for any other iPod nano model.
Any first generation iPod nano customers who have experienced their battery overheating should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Any other customers who have concerns about their first generation iPod nano battery should also contact AppleCare."
Well, thanks guys... at least we didn't die.

We're not having any problems, but Ars has found many people complaining about the iPhone 2.0.2 update killing their ability to actually make calls over 3G. Among the people who suffer from no-calling-itis is one guy who took his phone to AT&T and had them swap out the SIM, which somehow fixed the problem. If you're getting "call failed" on 3G, try switching back to 2G in Settings -> General -> Network and making the call again.

Thanks largely to those meddling kids at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry—who were investigating cases of people burned by too-hot-to-handle nanos—Cnet says Apple admitted today that some first-gen iPod nanos were overheating and said that it will replace any first-gen iPod nano that smokes or sparks (or blows up).
Apple says the issue has been traced back to a single battery supplier, and affects less than 0.001 percent of first-gen nanos. So if yours is bubbling or you're using it as a space heater for your pet mouse, hit up AppleCare for a replacement. There's a big question here though: If Japanese officials hadn't gotten involved, would they have made this announcement? I don't think so, even though it's not like exploding iPod nanos are an undocumented phenomenon.

The three-year deal marks the first time Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios has licensed its titles to be published by a third party on mobile.
SCE has previously released mobile versions of games like Ratchet & Clank through its Sony Pictures Digital unit.
Player X will release Buzz! in the autumn, with Destruction Derby following in early-2009. Both games will be supported by an integrated cross-platform marketing campaign with SCE.
Buzz! titles for PlayStation 2 have now shipped more than five million units across the PAL region, along with a further 1.25 million units in the Buzz Junior range.
The first Buzz! games for PS3 and PSP are set to arrive in July.
Michael Denny, SVP of SCE Worldwide Studios Europe, said: "The creative proposals that came through from Player X were very encouraging and in line with what we are hoping to do with these two licences.

Over at BoyGeniusReports is this leaked shot of what's allegedly the CDMA version of HTC's fabby Touch Diamond cellphone. And oh boy, oh boy... that's one phone that's not been on a diet: compared to the GSM version sitting on top of it it's one big ugly fat fellow. Apparently it's actually "more comfortable to hold," but you've got to wonder about the weight of the gizmo, and the tightness of your pockets.

Jonz has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:
NES.app lets you play Nintendo games on your iPhone. It is a fully functional, feature-rich Nintendo emulator.
NES.app uses an emulator core we call NESCore, which we've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of Nintendo games. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM imageof any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Landscape Mode: Turn the iPhone counter-clockwise to play in landscape mode
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more
NES.app is not iPhoneNES!
NES.app started as a fork of iPhoneNES v0.01, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features including sound, multitouch support, full-screen, landscape mode, game genie codes, saved games and much more. It now contains zero code from the original iPhoneNES project.
2.3.1 [jonz] Added setMagnificationFilter [OFF] thanks stroughtonsmith

From Zod himself
Being that you're at ZodTTD.com, I figure you may be interested in some of the day to day events that I go through as ZodTTD. So in the first of a daily series of blog posts, here I go...
Most the emulators and games I program and port on the iPhone & iPod Touch use Apple's CoreSurface framework. Many wonder why I don't use Apple's OpenGL ES framework.
OpenGL ES v1.1 works well with blitting many pre rendered surfaces. Sadly though, it can't easily blit a chunk of memory with pixel data in it. It just so happens most emulators and some games use software rasterizers to render each frame of a game to memory. OpenGL ES v1.1 just doesn't provide this functionality.
So when I get all excited over AppStore and the official SDK, what does Apple decide to remove? Well they remove CoreSurface. So now if I decide to put some ZodTTD software on AppStore, I must use UIKit (which is slower than CoreSurface) or OpenGL ES which runs miserably slow for what I do. We're talking 15 FPS with OpenGL ES where CoreSurface gets 60+.
It gets a bit worse when you think of how Apple is treating CoreSurface ever since firmware 2.0.0. It's considered a "Private Framework" and seems to have some bugs in it, as if its not important to check if it has bugs anymore.
Why did Apple remove CoreSurface from allowed frameworks for AppStore? How long can we enjoy this framework before its left in an unsable condition by Apple?
If only I knew.

A version of Myst is heading to iPhone, developer Cyan has confirmed.
The news came from a post on the official Myst forums, where an unnamed developer confirmed that a small team of three has already started working on the touchscreen port.
"This is a small project that probably a very few of you know about," said the post. "We are porting Myst to the iPhone."
"Ok, before some of you start groaning, this is an outside funded project that is keeping a few developers employed... but it is really more than that. It is an interesting and fun project."
Mindless puzzles on the bus, on the toilet... sounds like a natural fit to us. We'll let you know when the first details hit.

Good news, iPhone users! Looks like Apple has finally fixed that 2.0 app crashing problem. One Gizmodo reader received an email last night from the iTunes Support Store with instructions for redownloading applications you've already bought (for free, of course) and was given a $15 gift certificate for his troubles! Maybe Adam will convert to Macs after all?

Kevin Rose's Apple crystal ball has been wrong more often than not (he was sorta right about $199 iPhone), but this time he's seen pictures people! ("It looks pretty cool.") He says that not only will the new iPod nano be tall and skinny and giant-screened like we've heard, he says it'll be rounded (like iPhone 3G's ass-side, but all the way around), and even provides this handy rendering. His other rumorage, like a huge iTunes update with for-real new features, is all way more reasonable than his past forecasting, so they're actually possible too!

you liked Johnny Chung Lee's Wii headtracking tricks you will love iHologram, a stunning iPhone app that makes the screen look like a window to a real, parallel dimension. While it seems like magic, it uses anamorphosis, a very simple painting technique that has been used by old masters since the 15th century, mixed with the technology in the JesusPhone.

This week in the App Store, we've got some great freebie apps. That's a good thing. Especially when you're a beleaguered Gulfstream GIV pilot getting hit hard by the soaring price of jet fuel. This week was also great for pilots in several other ways, but there's some stuff for the rest of us, too. Come along as we see what's been hitting millions of Springboards over the past seven days.

Hey, hackers! Now that we've got the attention of millions upon millions of incredibly talented individuals, here's your next challenge. India's Airtel -- which is offering Apple's iPhone 3G at a near-stratospheric price -- has claimed that "even the most deadly hackers on the planet won't be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone's Airtel applications with rival company SIMs." Just so you know, it appears that Airtel worked with Apple to develop "operator-specific iPhone applications," which is an interesting tidbit in and of itself. But let's focus on the task at hand here, and that's proving that making ridiculous claims about impenetrability always comes back to bite ya.

Most of you might have heard of the Games Convention in Leipzig - the biggest European Games exhibition.
Well, I've been there (together with the mysterious girl in red who is on our openpandora.org frontpage). Not as an exhibitor - as I don't have the final Pandora case yet. But as visitor... with a fully working Pandora MK0 Devkit in my bag. And a preview-case.
I had some appointments with different magazines and webzines there - and they were all baffled how well the controls of our little unit are layouted. And impressed by the few emulators I showed them on the system.
Interest was VERY high among those who saw the system.
Chip.de a major magazine in Germany even did a nice interview with me and mentioned the Pandora as "secret highlight" of the Games Convention. A very nice video.
new post by EvilDragon on the pandora dev blog
While public press is good, here is something that might be of higher interest for some of you:
RedSpotGames, publisher for Last Hope and Wind & Water Puzzle Battles for the Dreamcast announced that they will produce and publish commercial games for the Pandora. They already have some licenses for ports (I can't tell the titles here), this als means there will be most probably an enhanced version of Wind & Water Puzzle Battles, one of the greatest puzzle games I know!
So, interest is high here in Germany, things are looking good.
What else did we see at the GC? Hmm. Nothing special. Except for Hall 2, which was the retro hall with tons of Arcade machines and old computers and consoles. That was some great fun!

Sure, magic man and all-around seer Kevin Rose delivered the "news" that a refreshed iPod nano is coming in the form that slimmed up, tapered in, longish tube of a device -- but you might be looking for harder evidence. We've just come across two case-related designs supposedly destined for Apple's next PMP, but both raise as many questions as they answer. Chinese accessory-maker Beelan apparently has a silicon sleeve ready to drop ship to a location of your choice via Alibaba, and iDealsChina is showing off renders of the 4th gen nano and another case from "some unknown Canadian company." Unfortunately, neither design can really be verified, and as they've just appeared on the heels of last night's Rose rumor, the timing seems a touch suspect. We're wondering what the Engadget hive-mind thinks -- any meat on these bones?

HTC's Dream phone, with Android goodness, hit the FCC last week, and details have been popping up elsewhere too: But a new pic over at FCC has given us a concrete bit of data at last... the Dream's size. It's a svelte 55mm, or 2.17-inches wide, and 115mm or 4.53-inches long. That's a jot shorter than the iPhone 3G's length (though it's 0.28-inches narrower,) and only slightly bigger than the HTC Touch Diamond at 4.02 x 2.01 inches. Do you spot what's missing? The all-important depth of the phone--it's not shown on the FCC imagery. The slide-out QWERTY keypad will play a part in that, but we don't know as yet exactly how slim or pocket-stretching it's going to be.

Nokia promised us two new handsets today, and just as we heard last week, it's the N85 and N79. Not a lot of surprises with the N85 since it popped in the FCC database a couple weeks ago and started appearing in the wild: 2.6-inch AMOLED screen, GPS, five megapixel cam, N-Gage compatibility, 8GB of microSDHC storage, WiFi, and a 28-hour music playback battery life. The N79 replaces the N78, similarly bumping the cam to the big five em-pees with a dual-LED flash, GPS, 4GB microSDHC storage, WiFi, swappable back covers, and a 24-hour music playback battery life. Should be out in the UK as of next month, but we're hoping to see these hit our fair shores posthaste.

There's been a lot of discussion lately about iPhone 3G reception issues. Whether they exist or not is largely irrelevant in a world dominated by sound-bite driven perceptions. Nevertheless, some industrious Swedes decided to apply a little scientific method to the argument and found something interesting: the iPhone 3G performed just as well (or just as poorly, depending upon your mood) as a Nokia N73 and Sony Ericsson P1 when compared head-to-head in a mobile communications test chamber. The test was conducted by real-life antenna engineers just like those camera-fumbling souls contracted by the FCC. Of course, who's going to let a few facts stand in the way of contrary opinion and litigation, eh?

In case any of you missed Adam Frucci's brilliant piece on Apple ruining his entire life by releasing a moderately buggy iPhone 3G, you may have also missed a tip he got from Apple. If you've been having trouble finding reception after losing it (say you go into a building and lose reception, but when you come out still no dice) try turning Airplane Mode on and off. The amazingly convincing 3D anamorphosis app iHologram we showed on Friday turns out to be just a technology demonstrator rendering rather than a real app. Its developer, David O'Reilly, apparently wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes with the cool clip of the strolling cat, but just demonstrate how the 3D effect could be made to work. He's up for collaboration "with a developer or studio who wants to make it happen," for real, though. It might not be too long before someone takes this great idea and programs it, I suspect.

Tris, the free version of Tetris for the iPhone that we loved ('cause it was free!) is being pulled from the App Store. Apparently, The Tetris Company called up Apple and it no likey. Its creator, Noah Witherspoon, says that while he thinks The Tetris Company's copyright claim is thin—and would be thinner still if he called his game "Trys"—he doesn't really have the resources to fight it in court, so he's removing it from the store on Wednesday. Download it while you can, folks! Another depressing reminder why we need the iPhone app black market.

I admit it, I'm a bit of a twitter addict. And like my MPD client, I just couldn't find a twitter client that I liked. So I had some spare time today and whipped up my own. So far it does the basics -- shows the timelines, lets you set your status, and let's you reply to tweets. Of course there's a lot more to be done like showing user info (besides their icon), direct messages, and dealing with URLs in tweets.
It uses the same kinetic list code that I used in the MPD client, so it's kind of fun to scroll up and down and view the menus on the sides.
If you're a twitter user, you can try get my client from the google code site. Let me know if you have anything to say about it.
Updated v.29
GPS support-- It can automatically update your profile with GPS coordianates and search other updates based on your location. See what others are talking about in your area.

New for PocketPC:
This program brings you a 3D cube which will be used to switch/rotate between running programs.
This will be useful if you assign a hardware button to it.Currently program dont do that automatically!
Use Settings->Personal->Buttons to do that.(assign it to '3D AltTab Switcher').
You can also customize your animation effects from settings, and also animation speed.
If program doesnt show animation either you are low on memory or you have to manually assign a Graphic engine(like GAPI or DirectX) to program.(from settings)

Hello everyone!
This tool is useful for determining the status of the network and various foreign hosts, tracking and isolating hardware and software problems, and testing, measuring, and managing networks.
version 1.x: Work exactly as windows ping command, but it's more compact, fast and fury. Just type IP address or host name, check how many hops you will want and hit [Ping] button. At the end, you can see some statistics, like minimum, maximum and average time in ms; also sent, received and lost packets. After that you can export log with just one tap on result window.
version 2.x: Still in beta.. but, you can try it and give me some feedback: PingBox2_beta2.zip. Thanks for your replies!
Happy pinging!

News from Android Developers:
I'm pretty happy today, for two reasons. First, I'm happy because I get to let everyone know that we're releasing a beta SDK. You can read about the new Android 0.9 SDK beta at the Android Developers' Site, or if you want to get straight to the bits, you can visit the download page. Once you've got it, be sure to visit our Developer Forum if you have any questions.
Back in November, we made some SDK builds available that we referred to as "early look" SDKs. The goal was to give developers insight into the platform as early on as possible, and to get some initial feedback. Since then, we've been working with our Open Handset Alliance partners to incorporate much of that feedback, and finish the first devices. Since those devices are shipping in the fourth quarter, the platform is now converging on a final "Android 1.0" version.
The beta SDK that we're releasing today is the first big step on the SDK's road to compatibility with 1.0. Since this is a beta release, applications developed with it may not quite be compatible with devices running the final Android 1.0. However, the APIs are now pretty stable and we don't expect any major changes. If you're one of the many developers who were waiting for something a bit more mature, this might be a good time to take another look.
Since we're now moving quickly toward 1.0, it may also help to know which direction we're headed. To help out, we've also prepared a development roadmap. This will be a living document, and we'll keep it up to date as the Android landscape evolves. Currently it covers the next few months, roughly through the end of the year and a bit into next year. We'll update it with additional detail as we are able to, but even right now it can help give you a picture of how things will play out as the first phones draw near.
Enough of that though -- you're probably wondering what's actually new in the SDK. Well, you should read the Release Notes, the Change Overview and the API Delta Report for all the details, but here are a few highlights:
First and most obviously, the new Home screen is included, along with a ton of UI changes for 1.0.
Some new applications are included: an Alarm Clock, Calculator, Camera, Music player, Picture viewer, and Messaging (for SMS/MMS conversations.)
Several new development tools were added, such as a graphical preview for XML layouts for users of Eclipse, and a tool for constructing 9-patch images.
Since we've got a new Home screen application now, we thought the now-obsolete version from the M5 early-look SDK might be helpful to developers, so its source is included as a sample.
A number of new APIs are fleshed out and improved, and others are now close to their final forms for 1.0.
Tons of bugs were fixed, of course. (If you had problems with the MediaPlayer, try it now!)
There are a lot of changes -- the ones in the list above are just my personal favorites, so you should check out the links above for the full story. Not all the changes are additions, though: I'm sorry to say that we had to remove a few things, such as the GTalkService (for security reasons), and the Bluetooth API. There's a bit more detail in the links above, and we'll follow up on those in particular here in this blog to give you the scoop. In fact, we've got a little list of topics we want to talk about here, so stay tuned.
At the top of this post I said I was happy for two reasons, and now you know one of them -- but what about the other? Well, the second reason is because now that this is out I can finally go get some sleep!

August 26th, 2008, 12:48 Posted By: wraggster
News from Android Developers:
Earlier this week, we released a beta of the Android SDK. In the accompanying post, I mentioned that we had to remove some APIs from the platform for Android 1.0, and as a result they don't appear in the 0.9 beta SDK, and won't appear in 1.0-compatible SDKs. Today, I want to take a few minutes to explain why.
GTalkService
We were all really excited when the "XMPPService" (as it was called, at first) was included in the first early-look SDK. Once we brought in our security review team to examine Android, however, they soon realized that, as exciting as it is, the GTalkService has some fundamental security problems. Rich Cannings is one of our security researchers, and here's his explanation of the issues:
When I first read about GTalkService, I was both excited and scared. As a developer, I was interested in a feature that provided a simple interface to send messages between two Google Talk friends. The messages would appear on the receiving device as a standard Intent that was easy to handle. How simple and beautiful is that? Unfortunately, when I put my tin foil hat on, I recognized that things are a little more complicated than that.
We decided to postpone GTalkService's data-messaging functionality for the following reasons:
"Repurposing" Google Talk Friends
Google Talk friends are intended for a different purpose than that envisioned by the GTalkService. Your Google Talk friends can contact you at any time via IM. They can see your email address and often can see your real name. However, the idea of a Google Talk friend does not always line up with the types of people who may want to interact with via an Android application. For example, imagine a really cool mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game using GTalkService. You would have to add all the players to your Google Talk friends list in order to play with them. Next time you log in to Google Talk from your desktop or on the web, you would notice that you have many new "friends". You may not want to chat with these friends -- and perhaps worse, you may not want them to know what your real name or email is. We do realize that Android users will want to interact with other Android users anonymously and for short periods of time, especially in gaming scenarios. Unfortunately, it turns out that using Instant Messaging is not really a good way to do that.
Verifying Remote Intent Senders
Intents were designed to send messages within the device. The Intent subsystem can conclusively determine who sent Intents only when the Intents originate from the same device that services the Intent. When Intents come from other devices, the Intent subsystem cannot determine what application sent the Intent. This can lead to a variety of problems. At first, remote applications could send arbitrary Intents, meaning that your Google Talk friends had almost the same control of your device as you did. Even once that issue was resolved, we recognized that we could not trust the identity of the application who sent the request. We could only trust the identity of the user. So a "bad" application on your friend's device could send a message to a "good" application on your device which would negatively affect the good application. In the end, we determined that the Intent system, as designed for local use, did not lend itself well to being the vehicle for a Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
Placing Too Much Security Burden on Developers
As originally designed, the GTalkService placed a significant burden on the application developer to avoid security flaws and perform user and relationship management. An Android application using GTalkService would be reachable from all of the user's Google Talk friends, and a flaw in that application could pose an inviting target to a malicious "friend" or automated malware. There are automated mechanisms that could be used to help protect vulnerable applications or stop the spread of malware, but the deployment of these technologies was not possible in time for the launch of the first Android handsets.
Although we would have loved to ship this service, in the end, the Android team decided to pull the API instead of exposing users to risk and breaking compatibility with a future, more secure version of the feature. We think it's obvious that this kind of functionality would be incredibly useful, and would open lots of new doors for developers. One of our top priorities after the first devices ship is to develop a device-to-device (and possibly device-to-server) RPC mechanism that is fast, reliable, and protective of developers and users alike.
As a final note, I want to point out that since the GTalkService was always a Google "value-added" service anyway, it was never guaranteed that it would be present on every Android device. That is, GTalkService was never part of core Android. As a result this change actually allows us the potential to build a new system that is part of the core of a future version of Android.
Bluetooth API
The 1.0 version of Android and the first devices will include support for Bluetooth; for instance, Android will support Bluetooth headsets. In the early-look SDKs, there was an incomplete draft of an API that exposed Bluetooth functionality to developers. Unfortunately we had to remove that API from the 1.0 release. To get the skinny on why, I contacted Nick Pelly, one of the Android engineers responsible for that functionality. Here's the story on Bluetooth, in Nick's words:
The reason is that we plain ran out of time. The Android Bluetooth API was pretty far along, but needs some clean-up before we can commit to it for the SDK. Keep in mind that putting it in the 1.0 SDK would have locked us into that API for years to come.
Here's an example of the problems in the API. Client code is required to pass around IBluetoothDeviceCallback objects in order to receive asynchronous callbacks, but IBluetoothDeviceCallback is meant to be an internal interface. That client code would break the moment we added new callbacks to IBluetoothDeviceCallback.aidl. This is not a recipe for future-proof apps.
To make things even more tricky, the recent introduction of the bluez 4.x series brings its own new API. The Android Bluetooth stack uses bluez for GAP and SDP so you'll see more than a passing resemblance to bluez's interfaces in Android. The bluez 4.x change requires us to carefully consider how to structure our API for the future. Again, remember that once we settle on an interface we need to support it for years going forward.
Rather than ship a broken API that we knew was going to change a lot, we chose not to include it. We absolutely intend to support a Bluetooth API in a future release, although we don't know exactly when that will be. This should include some tasty features, such as:
Bindings to GAP and SDP functionality.
Access to RFCOMM and SCO sockets.
Potentially, L2CAP socket support from Java. (This one is under consideration.)
An API to our headset and handsfree profiles.

"Kinoma Play ($29.99) is the new media player we've been hinting at in our series of media player reviews this past week. It's essentially a super-charged media player that aims to make media you find on the internet as easy to find, play, and interact with as the media stored locally on your memory card. Those of you familiar with Kinoma Player EX on the Palm OS are going to be pleased to hear that all the functionality of the PalmOS's player is here and then some."
I've seen a lot of software come and go on the Windows Mobile platform, but watching this video and reading about Kinoma leaves me with the impression that this is one of the most impressive media players I've ever seen. The functionality, and the blending of local and online content, is extremely impressive. From an audio playback standpoint, it's a shame so many device makers use miniUSB or 2.5mm headphone jacks - I hate having to use adaptors. Check out Kinoma's Web site for a trial download.
One thing that Kinoma doesn't seem to have a good grasp on though is getting the software onto the devices. Kinoma Play isn't available in any of our software stores at MobiHand or Handango, and when I downloaded the software directly from their Web site it was only a CAB file - normally I wouldn't mind a CAB file, but when I tried to install it I received an error on my Blackjack II: "Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions." I've installed two other programs via CAB files today, so I'm not sure why Kinoma Play won't install. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did!

"SpaceTime 3.0 by SpaceTime Mathematics is a revolution in mathematics software with 2D, 3D, and time graphing with MobileCAS® for algebra and calculus. With features only available in Mathematica and MATLAB, SpaceTime is the most powerful cross-platform mathematics software ever developed for computers and mobile devices."
We're back with more copies of SpaceTime 3.0 to give away! Just like the contest that was held in May, we have one all-platforms license and two platform-specific licenses up for grabs. And, as always, the rules are simple. We've adopted a back-to-school theme for this contest, so to be in the running, simply make a post in this thread telling us how you'd use SpaceTime in an educational setting (or a commercial setting, if you're not a student or academic), and also the answer to "cos (0 degrees)", because we know you love number crunching.
You have until 11:59am (GMT) on Monday, September 1, 2008 to get your entries in. Winners will be announced the following week. Good luck!

Palm had originally planned to have devices ready to go as early as February 2009 running the new Nova operating system. It seems that date is now slipping as late as June 2009. The New York Times has an article on the Treo Pro and other efforts at Palm, and there was this passing mention of the OS, though not even its name "Nova" was mentioned.
"The real test of the new team’s leadership will come in the first half of next year. That is when Palm plans to announce a next generation of software - and a new device - which it hopes will make it easier for consumers to surf the Web and network with friends and colleagues."
As I've said before many times, Palm has never written an OS from the ground up. Palm OS 1-5 were all based on the Kadak developed kernel. True, Palm OS6 did see the light of day as an OS, but was never put on a single device for sale to the consumer. Nova will be based on Linux, but in all fairness, people have been putting Linux on PDAs since at least 2000 when some managed to get it running on the iPAQ 3600 series. Will Palm really be able to bring to market an OS based on Linux that will wow the consumer and save the brand, or will Palm become a device developer relying primarily on their Windows Mobile line of devices? I guess we'll know more by Q2 of 2009. By then, either leaks of forthcoming devices will be out, or the whole project will be delayed until later in the year.

"Another leaked Motorola handset? You bet! This time we've got the brother-in-law to the Motorola Alexander - no QWERTY keyboard - with a pretty decent spec sheet. This one is codenamed Atila, and if you haven't caught on to Motorola's code names for Windows Mobile devices, they are all named after great conquerors; Alexander, Atila, Ghenghis, etc. The Atila is actually the first Motorola device that will have tri-band UMTS/HSDPA. Finally, right? We're not sure on a release date, but here's an introduction of the specs, followed by the actual spec sheet..."
BoyGeniusReport has the goods on a possible upcoming Motorola phone. Unlike an earlier leaked report from BGR on the Motorola Alexander, there's no sliding QWERTY keyboard hiding underneath. Here are the specs from BGR:
• Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
• Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz)
• 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 1.8Mbps HSUPA
• 1130mAh battery
• 2.8″ QVGA 240 x 320 screen
• Wi-Fi b/g
• Qualcomm 7201A chipset
• Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
Ed will be pleased to note there's no Bluetooth listed. Still, it's a nice combo of acronymns. No release date yet.

Recently there had been many problems regarding the iPhone 3G reception and speed issues (even leading to lawsuits). But, according to tests conducted by some geeky Swedes, they were able to prove that the iPhone's 3G reception is "completely normal".
They compared the iPhone against a P1 and N73. Though P1 was proved better in receiving signals and N73 in sending signals, the iPhone was left behind just by a 'negligible amount'.
The equipment used to test the device were the once used by FCC. Remember that the results of test are completely based on hardware and not software so we can always keep a small margin.

Quickpwn gets a new update today as well. You will have to delete the old version and download the new one from the dev team's website.
"Also released today is the ‘150’ beta update to the Windows QuickPwn application, this contains a revised GUI from Poorlad that has tighter integration into the the main updated QuickPwn executable and provides fixes for YouTube and provides BootNeuter support for the unlock of 2G iPhones, remember this is still beta software, use at your own risk." - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

We're jumping the gun a little bit with this post since TextGuru is currently waiting for approval from Apple before it hits the AppStore but this is just too cool and we are unable to deny you a sneak peak. The iPhone sadly is missing any kind of decent text editor but TextGuru should solve that issue while throwing in some other pretty awesome features.
File sharing
Use TextGuru File Server on OS X to open up a server where you can get files to your device. TextGuru has a built in server so you can retrieve files from the device using your web browser.
Supported file types
Supported files include TXT, HTML, PNG, H, M, C, JS, PDF, and TIFF files. microsoft office doc support is being implemented, as is syntax highlighting. It also supports viewing of binary files in raw hex and ascii text.
Copy/Paste
TextGuru supports a number of text editing features, one of which is copy and paste. Copy and paste works easily and obviously can be used between documents but not between applications, although they are considering joining up with OpenClip if it isn't doomed.
Document Search
TextGuru supports a full document search, so you can search all of your documents for a certain phrase that may be within the document or in the title. Check out the sexy highlighting method in the screenies.
Text Formatting
Settings allow you to change the font and font size, bg color, and enable the server. however, it is NOT a rich text editor, more of a text utility.
Simple Sharing
TextGuru has integration with pastie.org and sprunge, and you can send via email (through mail.app). You can also download new files from pastie right from the app as long as you have the 6digit pastie ID (like ttp://pastie.org/259251).
Web Dev
TextGuru has a full web preview for HTML and PHP files and the like. You can save in multiple formats and delete files.
Easy Sharing With Your Mac
TestGuru can also be partnered with their Mac client allowing for simple file transfer between your computer and your iPhone.

Remember when things on windows used to be difficult and ages behind OS X releases? Soon to enter the fray currently occupied by WinPwn and
QuickPwn will be XiPhone.
Why another one? The developers of XiPhone would like to address the primary flaws that exist in both QuickPwn and WinPwn. Both curret programs lack lack the backing of the Windows API as well as the backing of a real development environment. XiPhone is based on XPWN and looks like it will become a nice alternative assisting Windows users in freeing the iPhone / iPod Touch.
Features:
Auto downloading of stock firmware files from apple’s site (no need to hunt for it then select it)
Wizard based modern GUI (created with .net 2.0), and Vista Style UI.
Export of firmware settings so users can pass around an XML file which contains a configuration that works for them.
Auto updates to the XiPhone software.
Automatic conversion of images to PNG format
Saving of configurations to XML format for fast loading.
Community based wallpapers used for bootscreen, Restore screen and others
Enabling / Disabling of options available based on the device you select.
Now XiPhone would like you're help with some friendly feedback and suggestions for their project. Post 'em up folks!

Google has dropped Bluetooth and the GTalkService instant messaging APIs from the set of tools for Android 1.0, but says that handsets using the Android OS will work with other Bluetooth devices such as headsets. According to a post on the official Android developer blog, Google dropped the Bluetooth API from the mobile OS because 'we plain ran out of time.' The GTalkService API was removed because of security concerns that included the possibility of applications revealing more details about users than they might want to let out, such as their real names and e-mail addresses

Hi all,
this is mainly an auto locking program which utilizes the Windows Locking for partial locking (phone related keys are active)
or complete locking (no keys are active).
It can be considered as an add-on to other programs which provide the User Interface, an 'In Call Locker'
with some goodies as mentioned later on which may or not depend on whether the device is locked (with any program that uses
the Windows locking).
v3.27 - Added option for resetting the exchange server policy, keyboard slide to unlock,
activate the keys temporarily, Various fixes (in-call etc).

"I have sad news. After 11 years, we will be publishing a final 2008 issue of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine and then suspend publication! We are working hard to make it the best Windows Mobile issue ever, a keeper, a reference guide... It is with great regret I make this announcement. We are a very small, self-funded magazine publishing company. We did not make this decision lightly, especially after 11 years of issues. It has become harder and harder to grow our circulation over the past three years since Windows Mobile changed from being PDAs to being phones. Pocket PC manufacturers like HP used to work with us to offer their customers a free issue of our magazine in their packaging. The phone companies have not shown similar interest in working with us. The other business challenge has been the lack of advertising sponsorship from Microsoft, phone companies, and OEMs, despite our coverage of their products. In order for us to sell subscriptions at current low consumer magazine-type prices, we must have a stronger and growing circulation, and we much attract the large advertisers who benefit the most from our existence. Of course, the irony is that almost 20 million Windows Mobile units were sold this past Microsoft fiscal year. We think there is a great opportunity to continue the magazine in this high growth smartphone market for a more sophisticated publishing company or a funded entrepreneur."
After eleven amazing years, the folks at Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine are suspending publication due to a lack of interest and sponsorship from a number of parties. For many years, I've had the pleasure of working with Hal Goldstein and his committed team in the Best Software Awards, and have appreciated their enormous level of dedication and enthusiasm shown toward the Windows Mobile platform and community. It's sad news, and on behalf of the team at Thoughts Media, I wish Hal and his team the very best in their endeavours. Of course, the door is still open; if you'd love to see Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine continue on and have sponsorship ideas, you might want to contact Hal.

After finally getting my thoughts on the iPhone 3G out into a blog post last week I felt it was finally time to go back to using a Nokia S60 device again. I’d really missed the S60 experience and I’ve wanted to try some of the new devices running the latest software (top of my list right now is the Nokia E71).
As has become the norm I posted my thought to Twitter and got this reply from Frank:
That got me thinking about what I really missed about the S60 experience while I was using the iPhone and here is what I came up with.
1) Video - It hasn’t always been the case but recently Video has become important to me. I love absorbing everything related to New Media and Social Media and the emergence of some interesting video-based services have got me really interested in video again. My favourite of these has to be Qik, a service which allows you to live-stream video directly from your device to the internet something I have regularly noticed I’d want to do in lots of situations recently. Other video services like Phreadz and Seesmic are on my radar too and video taken on your phone is the ideal way for me to dive in to their world.
2) Geo-Tagging - The easy way. The iPhone can Geo-Tag images but I just haven’t found a good way to upload that data to my preferred destination (Moblog). If I email it Apple strips out the location data and 3rd Party Apps also seem to have a problem retaining the data. On S60 devices this is just easier to do and I’ve never had problems with the data being stripped out. On top of that I really want to get back to using Sports Tracker (a better name is Life Tracker). Being able to upload that data and share it with others is pretty compelling and not something you can do with the iPhone yet.
3) Background Application - This is probably what I missed most and given that I normally have at least 3 apps going in the background when on an S60 device it’s hardy surprise. As I mentioned in my iPhone post this is something that I think really hinders the iPhone experience. A great example is Last.fm which i can use on an S60 device and let it run in the background while doing anything else with the device but on the iPhone I’m stuck in the App and if I go anywhere else the App is shut down. I’m sure that we’ll eventually see some iPhone Apps that are allowed to run in the background but until then this is a big winner for S60 and also Windows Mobile.
4) Bluetooth - Yes, I know the iPhone has Bluetooth but what can I do with it? I can’t send files to other phones or to my laptop using it. I can’t connect to any headset that I like or any other Bluetooth accessories that I might want to use. Bluetooth on the iPhone is totally toothless and there really is no good excuse as to why Apple have limited it so much. I had hoped that the iPhone 3G would have improved matters but as it hasn’t I have little confidence that we’ll see improvements in future iPhone hardware or software.
5) Tethering - I work away from home a lot and while WiFi is usually easy to find it’s good to know that I can always use my HSDPA phone as an internet connection if I ever get stuck. Unless of course I’m carrying an iPhone. Traditional tethering via cable or Bluetooth are missing from the iPhones arsenal which is surprising given that so many devices on the market support this, and not just Smartphones. Again when the iPhone 3G was announced and Apple indicated it was starting to aim at business user I hoped that tethering would be a new addition. Unfortunately it wasn’t and I doubt it will be added in future either. It’s also worth mentioning that if you use an S60 device there is the fantastic Joikuspot application that allows you to turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot, another thing I’ve really missed.
6) Copy/Paste - This one of those features that you might not realise is that important to you until you find yourself without it. I repeatedly found myself wishing the iPhone had the S60 pencil key in the month I was using the Apple device. On S60 devices it’s a joy to use (once you realise you can do it) especially moving text between different apps. This is by no means a vital feature but considering Apples great implementation of the screenshot feature (which could also be considered a minor addition) I hope it’s something they’ll throw in to a future update.
7) Options - Wasn’t sure how to title this one. Basically while I was using the iPhone I felt trapped having to do things the Apple way. I’ve already mentioned how closed the iPhone is in terms of Bluetooth, tethering and even Geo-Tagging. What I missed even more was being able to just plug in the phone and view its contents without having to use iTunes (which I loath) or iPhoto. I regularly use Linux and my daily PC right now is an Asus Eee 900 from which I can do nothing but charge my iPhone. With S60 you have far more options to interact with the device and load music, photos and other content and I miss that flexibility. I know this is to be expected because Apple have always had very closed environments and I’m sure there might be some benefits but for me as a power user nothing is more annoying.
Form Factor - With S60 you have a whole bunch of choice when it comes to form-factor. What do you prefer, Slider? Candybar? QWERTY? S60 devices cover them all, do them well and provide them at a variety of price-points. You also have your choice of different features. Love to take photos? Pick up and N82 which has a great camera and a proper flash. Want a work-horse that does everything? The N95-8GB will be your beast of choice. With the iPhone you’re stuck with the one option (I know there are 2 versions but you can only buy the 3G now) and if you don’t like touch screens or a large device you’re a bit stuck. While I know there are people out there that prefer to have less choice for me and I’m sure many others choice is important which is why the Mobile Device industry will always be fragmented.
9) Battery Life - A cheeky one and something I never thought I’d miss about S60 devices. Nokia S60 phones have aways had notorious battery life, especially the original N95. If you compare the specs the iPhone 3G should come out on top when it comes to battery. However when it came down to how long it lasted through regular use it fell short of the S60 battery performance. From what I’ve heard the latest S60 devices (bar the N96) have improved battery life so that should be an added boost when I buy a new Nokia phone. It’s also worth mentioning that, like every other mobile phone on the market, the Nokias have replaceable batteries.
So for all these reasons I’ll be moving on to a new S60 device as soon as I can. For now I have an E51 and E65 to keep me going. And the iPhone? Well I’ll certainly be using it every now and again to try out new apps and the new software updates. There certainly are aspects of the iPhone that I’ll miss, but that’s another post all together which I should put together by the end of the week, so stay tuned

It has been a month since the iPhone 3G hit stores worldwide to an eagerly awaiting crowd. It was the second coming of the Jesus-Phone and this one was going to be the phone we deserved the first time round. New Firmware, GPS, the App Store and of course the 3G support all built into a more curvaceous body.
Things didn’t get off to a perfect start on launch day with O2s systems going down in the UK and Apple having problems with iTunes activation and the freshly launched Mobile Me. But despite these issues Apple still managed to sell over a million iPhone 3Gs in its first weekend of release.
So how does the Jesus-Phone 2.0 shape up?
The Hardware
The original iPhone was extremely well built with a metal back-plate and a solid glass front and the iPhone 3G maintains that pedigree. The metal back-plate has been replaced by a more curvy plastic one but the device still feels reassuringly heavy, solid and is more pocketable.
Sadly that is where the praise ends because the iPhone 3G has to have some of the worst Hardware I’ve ever used in a high-end phone. It fails at even the most basic tasks and a lot of the features didn’t seem to work at all.
Let me start with the most basic of features: Making voice calls. The iPhone 3G (I shall refer to it as the iFail for the remainder of this post) would regularly refuse to initiate a phone call sometimes requiring me to try 7-8 times before it decided it would let me call someone. That is something I’ve never experienced even in the early days when I had my first mobile phone.
Of course I would only be able to try and make that call if I was actually lucky enough to be in an area where I could pick up reception. The iFail seems to maintain an average reception level of 2 bars and will also drop service all together at random intervals. 3G reception is just as dodgy.
And before you even mention O2, I always carry 2 phones with me, both on the O2 network. Whenever I’ve had these problems on the iFail the other phone (usually a Nokia) has worked perfectly and has maintained full reception in most cases. Can’t blame O2 at all, it’s all down to the iFail hardware.
And reception isn’t the only hardware issue, GPS is just as problematic. The first iFail I used flat-out refused to connect to GPS at all even when out in the open on a perfect clear day. The device even failed to give me a rough location based on Cell-ID or WiFi hotspots, something that the built in Skyhook software should be able to do. The second iFail proved to be a bit better and would actually lock onto a GPS location, however it seemed to have a mind of its own and would only connect when it felt like it. Admittedly when GPS worked it was great but it’s lack of reliability meant that I couldn’t trust that it would work when I needed it to.
However both these problems are trumped by the iFails worst feature: Battery Life. The iFail has the worst battery life of any device I’ve ever used, including the first-generation N95. Sure it will last all day if you turn 3G and WiFi off and don’t check your email too often but I’m a person who actually uses his phone.
Let me try and put this into perspective: After 2.5 hours of using the iFail as I would any other phone I had 20% battery left from a full charge. What was I doing? Checking email, taking pictures and uploading them to Moblog, making a phone call or two and using the browser to check and update Twitter. I wasn’t even listening to music while doing all that. So even if the iFail had no faults and had the most compelling features in the mobile world, I wouldn’t be able to use them as I’d run out of charge before my day had even begun.
Software
When it came to Software I wasn’t expecting any problems. Apples UI is fantastic and intuitive and had just been updated. Unfortunately the new updates seem to have slowed down the UI and OS. Applications (both native and installed) freeze when being opened, Safari stutters when you scroll round a page and I’ve experienced my first crashes on an iPhone. In a word, it’s Buggy.
More annoying than these minor speed issues are the limitations the device has when compared to other phones on the market. We all know that the iPhone can’t send MMS and can’t record video, which is a bad start. There really is no excuse for these basic features to be missing and I’d assume these would be more important to the average user than GPS or even HSDPA.
However power-users who are used to having smartphones will notice more limitations like the absence of an option to copy/paste text and, crucially, the inability to run non-native apps in the background. Before you start shouting, yes I get that most users wouldn’t miss either of those features but in my opinion it’s features like this that are crucial to making a phone a truly multi-purpose device.
The lack of background apps is particularly annoying, something I’ve become used to after years of S60 (and even WinMo) use. The last.fm application is useless to me as I can’t play the music in the background while doing other things. Shozu is also effected because I have to leave it open while it uploads a photo and if I exit it by mistake the data sent will be posted as half an image.
Apple tell us that this limitation is to preserve the battery life, and I can believe them given how anemic the iFails battery is. There are promises that some Apps will eventually be allowed to run in the background so we’ll have to see what future software updates bring.
However it isn’t all doom-and-gloom in terms of Software. The addition of the App Store to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform is a real triumph. Never has it been so easy to browse, download and install apps from on the device itself. Nokias Download! app pales in comparison and makes you wonder why Nokia haven’t ever had something as compelling as the App Store on their S60 phones.
It certainly helps that the App Store is already full of various applications a good proportion of which are free to download. My only issue is that some larger applications (over 10Mb) can’t be downloaded over 3G and require a WiFi connection if you want to download it on the device. This is the same limitation that makes the iTunes app totally useless to me, an artificial limitation being imposed by Apple this time on a data tariff that is supposed to allow unlimited use.
My final Software issue is to do with Geo-Tagging. The thing that really made the iPhone 3g appealing was that it would have GPS which would let me dive into the world of LBS. I was especially looking forward to Geo-Tagging my images and mapping various journeys and events using Moblogs new LBS features. However after finally getting GPS working on my iFail I noticed that none of the images I’d been uploading had any location information attached to them.
It turned out that the iFail can Geo-Tag images but the location information isn’t available to non-native apps. This mean when I use Shozu to upload my photos Apple doesn’t send through the location information that is attached to that image. Another needless limitation that defies common sense.
The iFail Experience
Having used the original iPhone and the iPod Touch I really had high expectations for the iPhone 3G. I knew it would have limitations because Apple like to keep tight control of the user experience but I wasn’t prepared for the experience to be quite this bad.
The thing is with some minor tweaks Apple could make the iPhone platform far more compelling. However that would mean loosening their grip on the overall user experience and that’s something we know they aren’t willing to do.
But I’m really just playing devils advocate with this “review”. Some of the issues I’ve talked about wouldn’t affect a casual user and the basic iPhone user experience is still very, very good. The iPhone 3G is a great device, I just think it could have been so much more. Hopefully the next version will live up to my high expectations and really shake up the industry the way the original iPhone did. For now we have a mediocre upgrade to a great device which will still win a lot of hearts and minds for Apple.

"Adobe® Photoshop.com Mobile is the easiest way to upload, view, and share your photos online from your phone. All you need is a supported Windows Mobile phone and your Photoshop.com account ID. Photoshop.com Mobile beta will be available as a free download in September."
Adobe claims that Photoshop.com Mobile will only support the MOTO Q, Blackjack, and Treo 700/750 series, although we're willing to bet most other Windows Mobile devices will handle it just fine as long as Flash is installed. At any rate, we'll let you know the moment it's available.

When we talk to developers, a common topic is the challenge of getting applications in the hands of users. That's why today I'm happy to share early details of Android Market—an open content distribution system that will help end users find, purchase, download and install various types of content on their Android-powered devices. The concept is simple: leverage Google's expertise in infrastructure, search and relevance to connect users with content created by developers like you.
Developers will be able to make their content available on an open service hosted by Google that features a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube. We chose the term "market" rather than "store" because we feel that developers should have an open and unobstructed environment to make their content available. Similar to YouTube, content can debut in the marketplace after only three simple steps: register as a merchant, upload and describe your content and publish it. We also intend to provide developers with a useful dashboard and analytics to help drive their business and ultimately improve their offerings.
I also wanted to share some early details to help with planning your efforts so that you can be ready as our partners release the first Android-powered handsets. Developers can expect the first handsets to be enabled with a beta version of Android Market. Some decisions are still being made, but at a minimum you can expect support for free (unpaid) applications. Soon after launch an update will be provided that supports download of paid content and more features such as versioning, multiple device profile support, analytics, etc. Below are some screenshots that illustrate some of the security features and workflow.
With the addition of a marketplace, the Android ecosystem is becoming even more robust. I am incredibly energized by the support and amazing content I've seen so far. We will share more details as they are available and I look forward to working with many of you in the coming months.

"Attempts to keep the most hotly anticipated consumer electronics devices under wraps these days are getting more and more futile. It's hard enough for companies to control disgruntled employees and leaks in the international supply chain, stir in a giant government organization and things quickly unravel. Case in point: T-Mobile's HTC Dream, widely believed to be the world's first Android handset. After Engadget loosed the Dream from its FCC constraints on the 18th of August, HTC contacted the agency on the 19th with a request to use a less detailed diagram for the FCC label placement. Fortunately for us they complied, giving us what can only be construed as official measurements in the process. The newly unveiled 115 x 55-mm dimensions tell us that it beats the iPhone 3G in terms of length and width but is almost certainly thicker than the iPhone due to the Dream's sliding QWERTY"
Everybody has news on the Dream, whether you want to hear it or not. Engadget speculates repeatedly (here and here) on it's dimensions via FCC documents. And the above video with the Darth Vader like breathing? Well it's probably the lord of the Sith playing with a Dream, if you're to believe the hype surrounding it. I guess we'll know more in coming days, but at this rate I have to let Dream information sit in my inbox for a day or two before posting to make sure it's not changed, updated, debunked, or clarified. I wish this thing would just appear in the marketplace!

Fortunately, there's a way to avoid this obvious security breach until Apple fixes it.
First, password protect your phone and lock it. Then slide to unlock and do this:
1. Tap emergency call.
2. Double tap the home button.
Done. You are now in your favorites. This seems like a feature, because you may want to have emergency number in your favorites for quick dial. The security problem here is double. The first: anyone picking up your phone can make a call to anyone in your favorites. On top of that, this also opens access to your full Address Book, the dial keypad, and your voice mail.
If that wasn't bad enough, the second one is even worse: if you tap on the blue arrows next to the names, it will give you full access to the private information in a favorite entry. And it goes downhill from there:
• If you click in a mail address, it will give you full access to the Mail application. All your mail will be exposed.
• If there's a URL in your contact (or in a mail message) you can click on it and have full access to Safari.
• If you click on send text message in a contact, it will give you full access to all your SMS.
Hopefully, this major security break that fully exposes your most private information will be solved as soon as possible. Until then, you can avoid any potential breach doing the following:
1. In the iPhone home, go to Settings.
2. Click on General.
3. Click on Home Button.
4. Click on either "Home" or "iPod".
This way, the double-click on the home button will take the user back to the unlock screen (if you use "Home") or the iPod screen. I recommend using Home. You will lose the ability to quickly access your favorites for a quick call—which is one of my favorite features—but that's better than having all your private mails, contacts, and SMS database compromised. UPDATE: Evidently Apple has a fix coming in their next firmware update, but we've got no word on when that release is planned

The Android Dev Blog today released some shots and details on the Android Market—the Android version of the iPhone's App Store. Stressing that it's a "market" (free, open, etc) rather than a "store," the Google folks have decided to not require an approval process for devs to have their applications listed, unlike Apple's mysterious black box of approval that even the developers still don't fully understand. Which is great news for Android devs, but could be quite a handful for Google.
Android Market builds in all of the similar functionalities found in Apple's version: providing the infrastructure to host apps in a centralized place, versioning and update control, and support for free and paid apps (although the pay apps will not be ready for version 1.0). Apple's model of a single, all-in-one app repository definitely makes sense over a Symbian or Blackberry approach, with apps scattered across the web. But where Apple has two phones to deal with, Android will eventually have hundreds, so the system will need to be all the more robust to not allow incompatible code that doesn't require prior approval to crash people's handsets. Still, iPhone developers have not been overly thrilled with Apple's development process, so this should be a relief for them.

According to a pretty legitimate-looking email thread from one of our readers, Steve Jobs may have responded to complaints that, since the pulling of NetShare from the App Store, iPhone-to-laptop tethering is impossible without jailbreaking one's phone. From our reader to Steve:
AT&T offers data plans for BlackBerry that include tethering for an additional $30 per month (a total of $60 per month for the BlackBerry+tethering plan).
It seems ludicrous that the same thing is not offered with the iPhone. I understand the desire to prevent tethering with the current data plan, but I am willing to pay more money to allow tethering! With such an advanced device, why can I not do so?

I can't speak for everyone in the room, but I'm not all that excited about the possibility of the iPod nano returning to its long, skinny origins. Originally repulsed by the latest iteration of nano, the deformed, squat body won me over the first time I actually held it in my hand. And it instantly made the styling of its thin predecessor seem like a vanity device—a lipstick-like accessory, not something designed to easily play my music. Anyway, these concept mock-ups by flickr's Umpa reminded me that skinny is still pretty hot. Widen the screen a tad and I might be sold, again.

Since we started the first Android Developer Challenge late last year, we all have been eager to see who the winners of $275,000 and $100,000 would be. All 50 applications that emerged from Round 1 of ADC I showed great promise, and these teams have been working intensely for the past several months to polish their apps for the final round.
Similar to round 1 we sent laptops preconfigured with the judging environment, emulator, and all entries to each of our seven judges. In this round, each judge reviewed all 50 applications, took collaborative notes and gave initial scores. Then, all judges met together over conference calls to discuss and debate these applications, finally coming to consensus on which applications should receive $275,000 and which should receive $100,000.
We're pleased to present all of the winners and finalists in our detailed ADC gallery. Peruse and enjoy — there are awesome applications and unique uses of the Android platform. We would like to congratulate the winners and thank all the entrants for their hard work!

Hi guys,
I have developed an interface to xcas, a free Computer Algebra System, for Windows Mobile.
Let's have a look at its features (text and screenshots have been taken from http://pocketcas.com, by appointment of ... myself):
Solving advanced mathematical problems made easy
PocketCAS is a free interface to the open-source Computer Algebra System giac/xcas.
xcas enables you to quickly solve complex algebraic problems, e.g. symbolic and numeric integration and derivation of non-trivial functions, solving differential equations etc. It has also a huge support for problems of linear algebra, like solving linear equation systems, multiplying and inverting matrices, finding eigenvalues (and eigenvectors, of course) and much more. If you do statistics or number theory, you will like xcas' great functionality in those areas, too!
Built-in TeX output
PocketCAS has the option to automatically use the output of xcas to generate beautiful formula images using mimeTeX. Just enter an expression and you will get the result in the same formatting you would find in a mathematical textbook!
For example, other Computer Algebra Systems would output the following result to the command integrate(sin(x)*cos(x)):
(sin(x))^2/2
With PocketCAS, you will see the formula as a real image (image removed due to xda-dev's limitation to 4 images).
(this is VGA output, on your PDA it will look smaller and even smoother!)
Simple input method for faster solutions
PocketCAS contains a fully-customizable, easy to use mathematical keyboard for quick input of most mathematical functions. You can even assign images to displayed on a button rather than mere text!
Therefore, PocketCAS is as simple to use as a pocket calculator, but provides you with the functionality of a full-blown CAS - in your pocket, wherever you take your PDA with you!
Missing a function or a macro? Simply add it to the keyboard which is stored in a human-editable XML-file!

Just a few days after the Dev Team released its jailbreak tool for the 2.0.2 firmware to Mac users, WinPwn 2.5 and the QuickPwn Tool for Mac have both appeared at about the same time, offering the ability to QuickPwn the latest iPhone and iPod Touch firmwares. In other words, not only can you jailbreak your iPhone or iPod and enjoy sweet, sweet Cydia and Installer action, but you also don't have to go through the irritating process of building a custom firmware and carrying out a lengthy restore in iTunes.

Hi all,
this is mainly an auto locking program which utilizes the Windows Locking for partial locking (phone related keys are active)
or complete locking (no keys are active).
It can be considered as an add-on to other programs which provide the User Interface, an 'In Call Locker'
with some goodies as mentioned later on which may or not depend on whether the device is locked (with any program that uses
the Windows locking).
The locking can be activated at the following events:
1. After a specified period of idle time (no screen tapping or touching the keyboard).
2. After the device has waken up.
3. During a call ("In-Call Locking" Partial or Full).

Update 30/08/2008
Back into business after my vacations .
Enjoy!!
Changelog:
- Battery metter
- Now runs on background. The app will keep running on background after the first start up so the locking is almost automatic. You can place a shortcut on \Windows\Startup so that your device locks even when startup (more secure). To allow freeing memory the app will respond to Hibernate message performing a full close, this will happend only if the device is not locked when resources are requested.
- Some bugs solved like two instances startup or graphical issues when voice mail or MMS where present (i forget to attach the png's for this last two cases X-D).
- Included German and Swedish translations. (thanks to aldur and T-dome).

"Such a string of mishaps and missteps might throw another electronics company into crisis. But of course, Apple Inc. isn't just another electronics company. Even as iPhone griping rages online, it looks like Apple's sterling reputation will emerge untarnished. Baba Shiv, a professor of marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, compares Apple's fan base to Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders who pass over arguably higher-quality Japanese bikes.Shiv said Apple's fans play down negative information to explain their relationship to the brand - and justify spending more for products that may not be better than the competition's. Once that loyalty is formed, "the transgression has to be so egregious for someone to completely change the narrative," Shiv said. 'If something like this had happened to Microsoft, the long-term impact would be much more for Microsoft than for Apple.'"
I'm just curious what you all think of this article. Apple and it's beloved iPhone have certainly had their share of mishaps lately. They've had some real problems with MobileMe, 3G, the App store, syncing, freezing, security and so on and yet it seems that no matter what they do, there's a strong loyal crowd that will defend them to the hilt. Yet when Microsoft has issues or flaws with just about anything, forums around the web seem to rip them apart. So after reading the article, do you agree that "Apple's sterling reputation will emerge untarnished?" Do you think there's a bias towards Apple sometimes? Are Apple and MS really on playing fields that are that different or is it just easier to pick on one more than the other?

"KeyToss mobile is extremely customizable, and similar in concept to iGoogle for mobile, but it's got a lot of cool and unique features, including: the ability to search using dozens of different search tools (e.g., Google, Amazon, IMDb, UPS Package Tracking, Acronym Finder, Dictionary.com, Wikipedia) from one search bar; local searches on Google Local, Yelp, and yellowpages.com based on your stored location; RSS and Atom newsfeeds with mobile-optimized links; localized links (so you don't have to enter your location when you click on Fandango, for example); the ability to organize modules on multiple pages; and file transfers between PC and phone. You can also get sports scores for your favorite (US-based) teams, weather, stock quotes, etc. And you can manage your site from your desktop at www.keytoss.com."
Mobile data is great to have, but while some sites either scale nicely or offer a seperate mobile version, others can crash your browser as you see "heavy" entry pages. A mobile portal is a convenient way to be able to pull frequently requested data into one location. Speaking of location, KeyToss will access location-aware data without requiring GPS so you won't have to re-enter a zipcode on some sites. WapReview compared it very favorably to iGoogle. You can check out a desktop representation or visit the site directly on your smartphone or other mobile device at http://m.keytoss.com. For those that use a mobile portal, does KeyToss offer enough unique features for you to switch?

"Microsoft Mobile Communications Group Manager Scott Rockfeld was on Fox Business chatting up quite a lot of Windows Mobile devices. The context of the discussion is basically 'competitors to the iPhone,' which is a little aggravating because, let's face it, the iPhone and Windows Mobile aren't always going for the same demographic. Some of the smartphones shown off: HTC Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, and the BlackJack II."

"The Omnia (Latin for "all") in fact has it all: a WQVGA haptic touch screen, quad band unlocked GSM, Euro-only 3G, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM radio, DivX certification, a 5 megapixel camera, 624MHz CPU, 8 or 16 gigs of storage and an SDHC microSD card slot. For those of us in the US, the Euro-only 3G takes "all" down one notch. The Omnia works fine on both T-Mobile and AT&T in the US, but you're stuck with EDGE for data. Really, it's hard to imagine that Samsung's flagship PDA phone leaves out triband HSDPA. No carrier offers the Omnia in the US; instead it's sold by online importers for approximately $700 (the 16 gig model sells for approximately $60 more than the 8 gig model). Prices may come down when the phone isn't so new and hot."

Well at least its your fault if you haven't updated to firmware version 2.0.2 according to AT&T.
There has been a lot of recent speculation and even a lawsuit about the reception issues with the 3g iPhone. First the 3g chip was blamed for the reception issues and then later refuted in a study. Now an internal source at AT&T has shed some light on the issue providing details about what the 2.0.2 update did and how it is intended to fix reception problems.
Basically the 2.0.2 update controls the UTMS power control in the iPhone. To get service, each iPhone requires power from the service providers transmitter and that power is requested by the iPhone itself. Pre firmware version 2.0.2 the iPhone 3g was asking for too much power from the cell towers. When a lot of iPhones asked for too much power all at once the cell towers would run out of power, leaving you with no reception.
I'd like to have some cell phone service so if you have a 3g iPhone (in denver ) do me a favor. Update to 2.0.2 using PwnageTool for mac or QuickPwn for windows or WinPwn 2.5 when it is released (we hear very soon).

Earlier this week some great looking macro photos take of various object circulated around the internet. The man responsible for these photos, Daniel Forsythe, has released instructions for all of you that are interested in doing the same thing.
This hardware modification isn't for the feint of heart. It involves taking apart your iPhone, removing the camera, scrapping out some glue that holds the camera lens in place, and then re-focusing the camera by rotating the lens.
While this does take a bit of delicacy and patience the results are quite good and extremely useful if you use your iPhone primarily for grabbing shots of bar codes or notes or anything else that you need some close-up detail.

T-Mobile USA has changed the IP address in their system for the T-Zones service. For anyone on 1.1.4 and below you will have to SSH in and manually change your settings (see below) or upgrade to 2.0+ and install the NEW T-Zones Hack provided by Big Boss in Cydia. For anyone on 2.0+ who has the previous hack installed you will need to update to the new one.
You must subscribe to the $5.99 T-Zones service for the T-Zones hack to work.
"For 1.1.x users that really don’t want to upgrade, you can fix proxy.pac yourself but editing the file /var/preferences/proxy.pac and changing “10.0.0.0″ to “25.0.0.0."

Cydia (the 3rd party, open source AppStore alternative) is incredibly popular, even more so in 2.x with the vast improvements saurik (Jay Freeman) has made to it.
We've spent the last few days revamping our stats handling for the MMi Cydia repo. Just for kicks, feel free to check them out at apt.modmyrepo.com. They even look cool on your iPhone.

It isn’t very often that an application comes around that redefines a platform, more often than not the platform redefines the applications. It is even less often that an application redefines an entire industry. Fortunately for us our passion is in the iPhone, a platform that, thanks to the developers jailbroken or official, constantly evolves and is redefined. On this permavolving platform there is a vast opportunity to redefine industries as well.
Today I had the opportunity to peer into the next evolution of the iPhone and the next evolution of VoIP. I’m not talking about the shady pseudo functioning implementation of Skype from fring – not that those guys aren’t great, I just very rarely had a working call – I am talking about the next step in VoIP technology as a whole – iCall for iPhone.
I’ve been working with the iCall crew for a couple of weeks now, starting out trying to get them to let me in with ad-hoc distribution. I talked with Arlo their CEO about why it has taken so long since we first saw the video back in June. At the time he told me that the applications in the AppStore where really more like applets and not industrial applications – he assured me that this would not be the case with iCall. I have to tell you, the man didn’t lie. There is no reality distortion field here just an absolutely incredible application.
The first time you open the application you’ll be asked to pick a get a free local number to make and receive calls using the application. For me I chose one close to my new apartment, although you could pick one in a different location if need be. Once you’ve got your number go in and enter your cell number which assists in making the switch from cellular network to iCall’s VoIP.

All those users who were holding their breath for a complete Windows Pwnage solution can now relax!
Remember the WinPwn teasers you saw last week? After those teasers and couple of other software hitting the scene, cmw seems to have taken the case into his own hands with the new WinPwn, making it a full fledged Pwnage solution for Windows users!
This new version packs a bundle of new features - like a completely revamped wizard style interface, different mode for different users (read: Basic and Expert modes), and a DFU helper has also been added so that you don't have to find the correct way anymore. Now you can even pwn your phone on a 64-bit Vista. This all comes with a bonus auto-updater like the sparkle system for original Pwnage Tool!

Recently, we witnessed the release of WinPwn 2.5. The Dev Team is right behind them with the launch of QuickPwn for Mac.
After a solid wait, Mac users can now have a piece of the QuickPwn cake. DevTeam Friday released the QuickPwn tool for Mac. For those of you who don't yet know, QuickPwn is basically a simpler and easier solution to jailbreak your iPhone - of which Windows users have had the monopoly for a few weeks.
The interface is essentially similar to the PwnageTool. QuickPwn is not a replacement for Pwnage but rather another jailbreak solution for the noobs and hasty people. This tool has the same features as QuickPwn for Windows.

Just ran into Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb over at the Microsoft booth in the PAX exhibit hall. After a bit of chatting I brought up the crash-prone iPhone Live app.
It crashes a lot, I told Hyrb, but I still use it because it's the only option for tracking folks on live on my phone. What about Live Anywhere?
They haven't forgotten about it, Hryb assured me, they've just had higher priority projects they've been working on. Things like the new Xbox Live Experience set to roll out this Fall. So it's still coming.
And what about the iPhone. Would Microsoft be behind an office App for the Apple device? Sure, why not. Plenty of Xbox 360 gamers have iPhones, he said.
I wait, anxiously, for that long-promised portable Live experience.

For better or worse, it looks like the so-called iControlPad is edging closer to reality -- or at least something really similar. According to a new image (and our limited Spanish translation skills), Belkin is actually looking to produce an App Store gaming controller, though we're still not entirely convinced that what we're seeing is legitimate. Whatever the case, the JoyPod would somehow, someway provide users who purchased Super Monkey Ball to play it using a bona fide game pad, though we can't figure out if the iPod touch / iPhone slips in behind the controller or if it just morphs to fit the JoyPod's space constraints. Guess we'll see (or not) soon enough.
