Games coming to PlayStation Mobile will be subjected to a simplified rating system, says Sony.
Developer relations exec Shane Bettenhausen called it "ESRB lite, PEGI lite, CERO lite," to reflect the streamlined nature of the system Sony has put together in collaboration with ratings boards. The new system will simplify the approval process by allowing developers to self-report content of their games, cutting out the need for ratings boards to dig through them, reports Joystiq.
This should speed up the approval process, saving on time and the resources associated with more thorough processes.
The PlayStation Mobile store (formally known as PlayStation Suite) is to go live on October 3, Sony confirmed earlier this week.
It will launch with over 30 games for Android-based smartphones and tablets in Japan, the US and Europe.

Motorola and Samsung just caught a break from the law after a few hard knocks. A Mannheim, Germany court has ruled that neither company infringes on an Apple patent covering how an OS responds to and ignores touch events. While we don't yet know the full details, patent lawsuit guru Florian Mueller suggests that the German judge took the same point of view that thwarted Apple's claims in the Netherlands and the UK: the particular patent was just too broad to stick. It's a potentially important win, as a ruling of violation could have led to serious problems with keeping Android-based Motorola and Samsung devices in stores; other patents are more easily circumvented. However, it's still something of a Pyrrhic victory for a pair of companies that have lately been facing the threat of near-term bans andsteep damages.

Shortly after leaping through the requisite FCC hoops, Sony's 1.5GHz Xperia acro S is now on sale to able and willing Americans. For those who've forgotten, the 4.3-inch smartphone packs a 720p panel, IP55 and IP57 dust / water resistance, inbuilt NFC, Bluetooth, a 12.1-megapixel camera around back, a battery good for up to eight hours of yapping and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). In unlocked form, it'll set you back $649.99 -- or, for the Sony faithful, just 64,999 Rewards points. Sadly, you can't get one stamped with a Sony Ericsson logo for the sake of nostalgia at any price. Per usual, the source link is awaiting your order.

You knew that the hackers of the world would be anxious to jailbreak their fresh new iPhone 5's, and the feat's been accomplished just a day after older hardware running iOS 6 was similarly set free. Grant Paul posted the picture you see above on Twitter, confirming his new, elongated iPhone is, indeed, runningCydia. Unfortunately, the jailbreak isn't available to the rest of us just yet, but it shouldn't be long before the masses gain access, too. Viva la liberté!

In a court filing late Friday night Apple has requested the court enhance the $1.05 billion in damages a jury awarded it from Samsung for their patent lawsuit in California. FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller has a breakdown of the figures, revealing that Apple has chosen to seek enhancement just on what the jury deemed "willful" patent infringement to the tune of $135 million (less than the 3x amount it could have pursued) plus an additional $400 million for infringement of trade dress. That adds up to $1,756,455,218 it's now seeking from Samsung, plus, as Reuters reporter Dan Levine notes, the expected request for permanent injunctions. That could cover more than the products mentioned in the lawsuit, as Mueller also points out Apple is asking for an injunction against other products with similar features, which could extend to devices like the Galaxy S III. As usual, it's all still far from over and the figures could change, but Samsung is probably just hoping Apple's lawyers use iOS 6 Maps for their next trip to the courtroom.
Update: Per FOSS Patents, adding in interest and supplemental damages Apple's total request is now a tidy $707 million. What does Samsung want? According to Reuters, it's requesting an entirely new trial, because who doesn't want to do this whole thing over again? Stay tuned.

iOS 6 has seen rapid adoption among iPhone and iPad users, reports developer David Smith. Smith's applications like Audiobooks get around 100k downloads weekly and he's taken to mapping the adoption of Apple's software releases over the last couple of years. This update's data shows a 35.4% adoption of iOS 6, with iOS 5.x holding court at 71.5% adoption. That's a pretty rapid pace, eclipsing Android Jelly Bean's 2-month adoption levels of 1.2% easily."

Com2uS titles will come preloaded on the MG portable
The creators of the Android-powered MG portable have announced a partnership with Korean developer Com2uS. The new partnership will see eight of Com2uS's titles pre-loaded on every shipped MG device. The titles included in the partnership are Slice It, Swing Shot, Homerun Battle2, Tiny Farm, Tower Defense, 9 Innings Baseball, Super Action Hero and Derby Days.
"We take pride in providing memorable gaming experiences and leading the future in mobile gaming," said Don Lim, General Manager, Com2uS America. "We believe the MG is going to bring portable app gaming to many kids who haven't been able to enjoy it before -- we really wanted to be a part of that."
"We think this partnership with Com2uS really delivers on our promise to make a dedicated portable gaming system that affordably brings more game into people's lives," said Taylor Cavanah, PlayMG Founding Partner and Meta Gamer. "I am personally a big fan of Com2uS and think it is fantastic that MG owners can immediately open the box and start playing a variety of games."
PlayMG is still running its Kickstarter funding drive for the portable, having achieved $40,380 in funding out of goal on $950,000.

"you're planning to get a new Verizon iPhone 5, there might be a little bonus feature included that neither Apple nor Verizon are keen to admit. As units have started making it out of the stores, it appears that the Verizon version of the device is fully unlocked out of the box and able to connect to any GSM network. Verizon support is apparently confirming to customers that the device is unlocked. At the very least, this doesn't appear to be a mistake. It likely has to do with the way the iPhone's radios are designed along with the implementation of LTE on Verizon. This might make the device a little more palatable to those on the fence about upgrading, especially for anyone that travels."

iFixit has posted a detailed teardown of the new iPhone 5. While the casing still uses Apple's proprietary pentalobe fasteners, the good news is that Apple has made the screen much easier to remove. Once the fasteners have been removed, the screen will lift out easily through the use of a suction cup. The screens are by far the most common parts of iPhones to break, and this change turns a complicated 38-step procedure that takes about 45 minutes at minimum into a quick, 5-10 minute job. The teardown also shows the iPhone 5 battery to be very similar to the iPhone 4S's, suggesting that the improvements to battery life come from other hardware and software changes. We get a look at the new A6 processor running the phone, which is a custom design based on ARMv7. iFixit also looks at the Lightning connector assembly; unfortunately, it includes the loudspeaker, bottom microphone, Wi-Fi antenna, and headphone jack as well, so fixing any one of those parts individually will be difficult. Whatever you think of Apple's decision to move to Lightning instead of micro-USB, it seems their switch away from the 30-pin connecter was necessitated by size constraints.

Here’s how you can have a hands-free, no worries about the battery, Android experience while you drive. [Steve] removed the head unit from his car and Android phone. The look is pretty nice, but we do have a few suggested improvements if you try this one for yourself.
It started simply by removing the factory stereo which left a double-height opening in the dashboard. [Steve] cut a piece of wood to fit the gaping hole, painting it a grey that would compliment the interior colors of the car. The phone is mounted on this plate, with plenty of room for the USB and audio cables. From there it is finished up with another wooden plate which has a cutout for the touch screen. See the final project, as well as glimpses of the installation, in the video after the break.
[Steve] demonstrates using the GPS features and playing music. We’d improve this in a couple of ways. First off, using something like the IOIO board you could add a physical volume knob, which we’re not interested in giving up for a touch screen quite yet. If you were willing to go the extra mile, a CAN-BUS chip could be added too that would monitor button presses from the steering wheel music controls.

With a huge number of people complaining about flaws in Apple’s new mapping system, TomTom has been quick to point out that it is not responsible.
Despite the new software being created using data from the navigation firm, a TomTom spokesman has told the BBC that its maps provided only a ‘foundation’ to the service.
"The user experience is determined by adding additional features to the map application such as visual imagery," said the spokesman.
"User experience fully depends on the choices these manufacturers make.
"We are confident about our map quality, as selling 65 million portable navigation devices across the world and more than 1.4m TomTom apps for iPhone in the past two years reaffirms this quality."
Yesterday Apple released a statement in response to the many complaints – which it refers to as ‘feedback’: “Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service. We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.â€
Apple Maps replaces Google Maps on Apple device once the user upgrades to the latest operating system iOS6.

Nine days after Apple held its conference, which unveiled its latest device, the iPhone 5 has gone on sale within the UK.
Pre-orders of the sixth-generation device following the event were through the roof, with a recorded two million devices purchased just 24 hours after.
Customers waiting for the device have queued for up to a week outside Apple stores across the globe, including London, New York and Brisbane.
Employee's of the Covent Garden Apple store formed a passageway around customers who had eagerly awaited the release of the device and offered high-fives as they finally entered the store to claim the fruit of their labour.
Apple's flagship London store on Regent Street opened its doors to customers at 8am this morning, as 22 year old Cam Newton, who donned a full body morph suit, became the first person to pick up the newly released iPhone 5.
UK boy band JLS were on hand at the Oxford Street branch of Carphone Warehouse to entertain the patient crowds as they too waited to get their hands on the latest iOS device.
Meanwhile in Australia, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak joined the queue himself at the firm's Brisbane branch as the country became the first in the world to offer the new device.
Amongst the day's iPhone 5 hype, there has been plenty of ridicule too for Apple's new iOS6 operating system, and notably, its newly included Map software.
The newest OS brought a number of changes, particularly Apple's decision to drop Google's map software in favour of its own.
However, the software has left many users dissatisfied, who have been quick to air their disappointment.
The software is stated to suffer from a number of issues, such as spelling errors of place names, blurring and distortion of images and the app's inability to identify certain locations.
As users continue to queue for the latest edition of Apple's flagship smartphone, those who are yet to secure theirs will have to endure up to a three week wait, as pre-orders of the device have outnumbered available stock.

Ahead of today’s launch, a Japanese gang spent the early hours stealing all the iPhone 5s they could from a number of Osaka stores.
The goods, valued at around £60,000, were taken from three different stores in Osaka and the robbers where in and out of each store within 5 minutes.
The thieves targeted smaller Osaka stores rather than the flagship Tokyo shop, which saw 750 eager iPhone fans lining up overnight to get their hands on the new device.
33 iPhone 5s were stolen from an Au store in Ibaraki city, Osaka. 116 iPhone 5s were stolen from a Softbank store in Western Osaka at 4:24am. 42 iPhones were stolen from a nearby Au store at 2:30am.
So far the robbers haven’t been caught, but we wonder how long they can stay on the run with one of the most traceable products in the world.
Pre-orders of the iPhone 5 set a new company record and topped 2 million within the first 24 hours, Apple has said some pre-order customers would have to wait up to one month for a new iPhone to ship.

Following on from PCR's earlier report surrounding the theft of iPhone 5's in Japan, it seems the epidemic has hit the UK too.
Police are looking to question an O2 shop assistant over the theft of iPhone 5 devices from one of its stores.
The O2 store in the Tandem Centre, Wimbledon, had around 250 handsets, worth £100,000, stolen at around 1.30am this morning.
Included within the stolen handsets was the store's entire iPhone 5 stock, which was due to go on sale just hours later at 9am.
Today's release of the sixth-generation device has generated worldwide buzz and customers continue to queue outside Apple stores with the hope of bagging Apple's newest flagship smartphone.
It would appear that those looking to get their hands on an iPhone 5 are doing so by any means necessary.
It's safe to say that the news won't sit well with customers who have patiently waited over a week for their iPhone 5, pre-ordering the device as it was announced at Apple's launch conference last week.

Hilarious images show one buyer actually fist-pumping the air.
You may have heard that a little-known device called the iPhone 5was launched today, and O2 capitalised on the opportunity by opening a pop up shop ON TOP of its O2 attraction in London.
The store sits some 52 metres above the ground, with buyers required to wear safety harnesses to climb the recently installed fabric walkway and reach the zenith.
Nick Thomas, O2 spokesperson, said: "While we can’t offer such a scenic view at all our stores, we’re hopeful that our customers will find it a phone that’s most certainly worth the wait."
Helen Squires from Liverpool, one of the first O2 customers to buy the phone, said: "Being one of the first to get my hands on the new iPhone is one thing, being able to get it from the top of The O2 has been mind-blowing.
"I’m no stranger to queuing but I’ve never waited before in a line so high or with such a view. It’s made the experience even more of an adventure.â€
Well, if Helen plans to use Apple Maps for an 'adventure' to find her way back home she could be in for a shock, the app has decided to relocate various towns to the wrong places.
