There's been a significant mystery lingering around the A6 processor found in the iPhone 5, even as it became clearer that Apple was veering further than usual from the basic ARM formula. A microscope-level inspection by Chipworks and iFixit is at last identifying the key elements of the 32nm, Samsung-assembled chip and revealing just how far it strays from the beaten path. The examination confirms earlier suspicions of a dual-core design with triple-core graphics -- it's how that design is shaped that makes the difference. Apple chose to lay out the two processor cores by hand rather than let a computer do the work, as most ARM partners do. The procedure is expensive and slow, but also gives the A6 a better-optimized design; it explains why the chip is noticeably faster than much of its competition without needing the brute force approaches of higher clock speeds or extra cores. Some mysteries remain, such as the exact PowerVR graphics that are at work, but it's evident Apple now has the design talent and resources to speed up mobile devices on its own terms rather than wait for off-the-shelf layouts like the Cortex-A15.

Well, it took a while, but Google has finally launched the Nexus 7 in Japan. The tablet made its state-side debut in July, but it took almost three months for it to cross the Pacific and land in the east Asian nation. Pricing is a little higher than what we've seen everywhere else, with the 16GB model selling for ¥19,800, or about $312. It makes a perfect companion for the recently updated Play Books app that also just made its debut in the Land of the Rising Sun.

If you were worried about stumbling onto a malicious website and accidentally wiping your SamsungGalaxy S III or other TouchWiz smartphone or slate, you can probably breathe easy. It's likely you already have firmware on your device which isn't vulnerable to the so-called dirty USSD code, and if not, you can download it now, according to Samsung. The company issued the following statement on the matter: "We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the Galaxy S III has already been resolved through a software update. We recommend all Galaxy S III customers download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service." It turns out we couldn't reproduce the bug earlier as we already had the latest update, and you should probably check to see that you do, as well. Meanwhile, we're also checking to see if other Touchwiz devices have been patched, so don't forget to watch what you click.

Sky+ in the UK has bundled several updates to deliver all at once, including expected ones like zeebox integration into its iPad app and an expanded Catch Up TV lineup, plus a new 2TB Sky+ HD DVR. Viewers will notice the new 7-day Catch Up TV section in their video on-demand section stocked with shows from Sky, ITV Player and Demand 5, with BBC iPlayer arriving this fall and 4oD next year. The Sky+ iPad app has been updated to v4.1 with a notification for possible recording conflicts plus expanded content info and social tie-ins powered by zeebox. Now, you can not only change channels from the tablet, but also find out more about what's playing. Finally, the new expanded size DVR outpaces the stock configuration available from competitor Virgin Media, and we're told it is priced the same as the previous 1TB offering. Google Play crossed a rather significant milestone this morning: something to the tune of 25 billion app downloads. While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own -- especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren't included in this tally -- Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you'll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.
With today's announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play -- a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

And emerging markets are expected to account for 57 per cent of them.
Ovum reports that 450m smartphones were sold last year, with emerging markets accounting for 160m of the sales – specifically, China was the driving force for emerging markets and accounted for two-thirds of the sales.
Total smartphone shipments are set to reach 1.7bn in 2017, and emerging markets are to power 57 per cent of devices sold.
Shiv Putcha, principal analyst of telecoms emerging markets, Ovum, said: "China is at the center of smartphone development and adoption in emerging markets, with the whole ecosystem increasingly geared toward the production of ever-more feature-rich affordable devices.
"This new wave of affordable smartphones will have a major impact on consumer choice in emerging markets."
Indeed, low-end smartphones can be bought for sub-$100, though affordability is still an issue in developing countries.
While China is the dominant force, India, Indonesia, Brazil and Russia are also set to show growth.
In other shipments-related news, IDC expects 117.1m tablet shipments in 2012.

Oh dear, the message is not getting through.
The mobile ad business keeps growing, with some of its networks serving 30bn ads a month.
These firms, and the advertisers they work with, are realistic enough to recognise that only a small number of consumers engage with their campaigns.
But still, the results of this survey from Azullo will be pretty alarming.
Azullo, the company behind the advertising solution Respond, polled 1,014 smartphone owners and found that just 21 per cent recalled having seen any kind of mobile ad in the last six months.
And 53 per cent of this group couldn't recall which brands, products or services were being promoted in the ads they had seen.
But there is a silver lining. The reason for their ignorance was not down to dislike of the medium, but actually to the failure of the ads to communicate.
When asked why they couldn't recollect a campaign, 34 per cent said the ads weren't memorable, while 39 per cent the images were ‘too distorted’.
Guy Cookson, co-founder of Respond, said: "Most mobile ad formats are adapted from desktop. Banners ads are squeezed to fit far smaller spaces, with resulting compromises in clarity. Graphical ads are also often slow to load over mobile networks.
"This is no way to engage an audience, to invite discovery, to inform and delight."
Respond solves this by replacing banners with a call to action 'button'.
A click on this loads a full screen ad. It's being used by Trinity Mirror, Future and IPC Media. Advertisers include LoveFilm, Netflix, Microsoft and Sky.

BB10 will bring more content to rent or buy with 'one stop shopping'.
So much is riding on RIM's new BlackBerry OS, which is set to land after many delays in Q1 2013.
The firm is haemorrhaging subscribers and falling behind iOS and Android with every month that passes. It also has to contend with a reinvigorated Windows OS.
A key part of BB10, therefore, is the content offering carried by the App World storefront.
At the BlackBerry 10 Jam conference in San Jose, RIM revealed that portal would host music, movies, and TV in addition to apps.
No details on partnerships or how it might work, but clearly RIM is conscious of the ease with which people buy from iTunes and the aggression with which Samsung, Sony and others are setting up their own content stores.
All this will materialise when RIM launches its new BlackBerry 10 devices on six continents in the first quarter of 2013.
It maintains feedback from operators has been great and even reported a slight rise in BB users from 78m to 80m in the last quarter.
You see, it's not all about North America, you know.
Then there's the battle for developer mindshare. This is another point of contention, with Morgan Stanley recently claiming support stands at 'zero' while RIM counters that the BlackBerry 10 Jam developer conferences have been sold out.

New iPhone connector doing the business.
iPhone 5 fever shows little sign of letting up. After the queues and the 5m weekend sales, punters are now piling into stores to buy accessorises for their cherished new devices.
UK retailer Carphone Warehouse says it's selling 17 items every minute.
These include cases and protectors, but there must surely be a portion of users who are buying kit to replace old items that don't work with the new iPhone 5 connector.
Another triumph for in-built obsolescence.
Graham Stapleton, chief commercial officer at Carphone Warehouse, said: “The iPhone 5 has given Carphone Warehouse the biggest single launch we’ve seen for accessories. We anticipated that demand would be high, which is why we’ve ensured that we had the widest range of iPhone 5 accessories available on the high street at launch."

Beginning today, Marvel is dropping the price of its epic mobile title Avengers Initiative to $2.99. The limited time promotional price drop, from $6.99, celebrates the September 25 release of ‘Marvel’s: The Avengers’ Blu-Ray 3D, Blu-Ray and DVD.
Avengers Initiative burst onto the mobile scene on September 6, 2012 as Marvel’s first episodic game created exclusively for mobile devices. The first installment of the series centers on the Incredible Hulk, fittingly one of the most groundbreaking characters of the Marvel Universe. Over the next few weeks, we can surely expect iOS developers from all over the globe to start pushing out updates to make their applications better interact with Apple's iOS 6 and that all-new screen found on the iPhone 5. And, because we know some of you choose Chrome over Cupertino's built-in Safari browser, we thought we'd single out the fact that Google has outed a new version of the app which makes it friendly with the new iPhone's larger display as well as the most recent variant of iOS. Aside from the iPhone 5 / iOS 6 compatibility, though, Mountain View also bundled in some undisclosed stability and security improvements in version 21.0.1180.82 (!) of the web browsing application. TechCrunch reports that Apple, facing a substantial backlash (and some snarky competitive advertising) over goofs in the mapping software included in iOS 6, is going after the problem with a hiring spree. Here's TechCrunch's lead:"Apple is going after people with experience working on Google Maps to develop its own product, according to a source with connections on both teams. Using recruiters, Apple is pursuing a strategy of luring away Google Maps employees who helped develop the search giant’s product on contract, and many of those individuals seem eager to accept due in part to the opportunity Apple represents to build new product, instead of just doing 'tedious updates' on a largely complete platform."Meanwhile, writes reader EGSonikku"Well known iOS hacker Ryan Perrich has gotten the iOS5 Google Maps application to run on iOS6 using 'a little trickery.' (.) He has not released it yet due to crashing issues but states 'it mostly works.'"
