Angry with Apple over the absolute lockdown of the iPhone? You're not alone. Angry enough to start a lawsuit over it? You're probably in a far smaller group entirely, which now includes a number of rabble-rousers on Apple's forums, whose comment threads were killed shortly after beginning discussions of calling for a class action suit against Apple. (Really though, what'd they expect?)
There's no question that users want some retribution for the sorry, sometimes even bricked state the iPhone's now in, but big talk is infinitely smaller than even minor action, so until some brave (or publicity hungry) individuals step up to the plate to test legality of disabling hacked features on personal electronics, it sounds like we'll all just have to be content with our $100 refunds or reduced-price purchases until this thing works itself out.

The quartet of posters above was photographed in New York city over the weekend by a MacRumors forum jockey. Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen Nokia pounce on Apple foibles, and it certainly won't be the last. Even if Nokia can't help but copy the iPhone interface design in its own future-looking presentations.

One of the criticisms levelled at the Next Gen N-Gage platform by users of the first gen N-Gage is that it seems awfully expensive.
At the end of its lifetime, the N-Gage QD was available new and unlocked for about €100 to €150, whereas the cheapest Next Gen compatible phone is the N73, which still retails for about €300 to €400 new and unlocked. The other Next Gen phones announced so far (N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB, N81, N81 8GB) are even more expensive, costing up to €700.
However, this isn't quite fair. The original N-Gage launched in 2003 at about €300, the same price as an N73 at the Next Gen N-Gage launch in 2007. The QD launched at about €200 to €250 in 2004. It was only after sustained disappointing sales that the price of the N-Gage and QD were dropped to their lowest levels, but this part of the story seems to have been forgotten by many people.
In contrast, the phones selected for the Next Gen platform have had very good sales. The N73 and N95 are two of the best-selling smartphones ever made, and Nokia's inclusion of the N73 on the platform was no doubt partly because of the huge contribution it would make to the Next Gen N-Gage userbase. Because these phones are selling well, their prices are unlikely to drop very quickly, but (perhaps counter-intuitively) this is a good sign for the Next Gen platform because phones that sell well mean more people buying the games, which means more support from third party publishers.
However, the bottom line is that a lot of people are interested in Next Gen N-Gage who cannot afford to buy a compatible phone to try the platform. What are the options if you're in this position?

Nervegas has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:
NES.app uses the popular InfoNES emulation core to mimic the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing you to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES console. ROM dumps are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM dump of any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
NES.app started as a fork based on the same original code as iPhoneNES, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features such as sound, game genie, saved games, and full screen support.
1.8.0 [nervegas] Fixed white noise channel frequencies
Fixed PCM DMA
[jordan] Added PAL support, use filename (E) unless marked in header
(Many are not marked in the header)

Just found those honest words from the author of FiveDice:
Hey Apple Inc.! I know your listening.
The Google Analytics account tied into this Google provided series of web-pages shows you're listening. This little slice of fun is getting several page views from Cupertino each day. So, here is my two-cents.
First, I do not participate or condone the SIM-Unlocking shenanigans of the iPhone. I fully understand and appreciate the unlocking communities arguments, and respect their efforts. I would be frustrated too if I lived in an area where I could not get AT&T service, and thus no access to the iPhone. In all honesty I would likely be very tempted to pursue the same solution they have. However, I also respect the amount of effort and money that has gone into not only developing a product like the iPhone, but also to the development and cultivation of the partnerships that have brought this technology to fruition.
Many complain that the iPhone should never have been limited to one carrier, or that a world-wide roll out should have been available at launch. I find this naive. This point of view shows no real understanding of reality, and what it takes to do what Apple has done. They have entered a space that is so crowded with well established players and deeply entrenched business models, and attempted to turn it all upside down if not cockeyed. I have never liked AT&T (Cingular) cell service. Several years ago I had their service, and it was awful. 2 years ago, I tried their service again. Still awful. But I chose to leave my Verizon Wireless service and switch to AT&T because I wanted an iPhone. As far as the service, and support of AT&T. Well, it has been much better than my past experiences. In Southern California, it has been at least as good as Verizon was for my needs. Apple made it very clear from the very beginning that this was a service locked deal. Take it or leave it. We all chose to take it. Many refused to believe it, and have now gotten rather upset with Apple because their expensive toy is now an expensive paperweight. I hope things work out for you in the end. I would be pissed too, but mostly at myself.
Now on to my real purpose here. 3rd-party applications. Yes, I know same deal as above. We all knew from early on that 3rd-part applications were not supported outside of Safari. So, why is it ok to bitch about this, but not about unlocking. Well, because this is my rant. No one is forcing you to read this.
The crux of the issue is this. Steve Jobs stood before a large audience at MacWorld 2007 and proclaimed the iPhone as "revolutionary" and something that "changes everything." He talked about OS X, Cocoa, Core Image, and Core Animation. What did he think would happen when a few months later he hands us this silly Web 2.0 thing as a software development solution. Not acceptable Steve-o. Not after what was just dangled in front of us. So, some very enterprising folks came up with a way of full-filling Steve's original promise. Yea it may not have been blessed by Steve, but it also did not bring down AT&T's "west coast network." Apple, look at the code to the released apps. Heck, click the Source button above and look at the code to this one. Do you see anything in there that would bring down AT&T's network? I didn't think so. Through the efforts of the 3rd-party community, the iPhone has become infinitely more usable to a core group of your customers. This is your Think Different legacy. You remember us don't you. "The Crazy Ones", "The Misfits", "The Trouble Makers", "The Round Pegs in the Square Holes", "The Ones Who See Things Differently". I am not proclaiming any one of us have as profound an impact as those depicted in your outstanding Think Different campaign, but you started this. You inspired us with those words so poetically delivered by Richard Dreyfuss. You created the anthem that holds true today. We are the users who infect those around us with our enthusiasm and interest in making the technology experience better for everyone.
Apple, you have created a great set of frameworks for Mac OS X development. The tools on the iPhone echo the care and ingenuity of their older brothers. UIKit has been fun to write with and explore. Many of the tools created by the community do nothing but showoff more of the iPhone capabilities.
Apple, bring back 3rd-party development. I am not expecting support, or warranty service for my 3rd-party infused iPhone. I just want to be able to continue to upgrade my firmware without fear of losing the great benefits the community has brought to my iPhone. Don't lock us out. Don't continue the cat-and-mouse cycle. Embrace it. Let your "Misfits" have their fun with the products they paid for. As a small developer, I want people to continue to be able to play my little game, or read an ebook on their new "revolutionary" device. I want people to stay excited about this technology experience.
I am leaving this uncommented, everyone should have his own thoughts about those lines.

Come on, you expect us to believe someone on a forum thread saying that Steve Jobs emailed him directly to say that they'd be adding a feature to one of Apple's products? Well, if that's all it takes, we'll get to it next time. With the evidence being a screengrab of an email from "sjobs@apple.com," David Jearly at the MacRumors forum claims to have definitive proof that the lack of user editing of calendars on the iPod touch is a "bug" that will be fixed in the next update. To us, the absence of an editing option is more than a simple bug, but if it's getting added, then who cares why it wasn't there in the first place. Of course, David Jearly's gonna get himself well and truly stuck in the dunce corner if this doesn't come to fruition

As if anyone expected it to stay locked down forever, the layers of security surrounding v1.1.1 of the iPhone firmware are being peeled away. TUAW's Erica Sadun managed to get read / write access to the phone's directories during her liveblogging session, and the hackint0sh forums are abuzz about a new hacking method that uses buffer overflow via "carefully crafted" TIFFs that crash Mobile Safari. Neither of the new hacks approach the relative ease of use that we'd seen pre-v1.1.1, but it's still early days yet. Apple, throw us a bone here, will ya?

Really, it was just a matter of time until bad taste prevailed. Goldstriker International is now offering Apple's iPhone dipped in 24 carat gold for your (even more) conspicuous consumption. The perfect accessory to your wife ornament and mojito while parked at the bar. The not so free-for-all begins mid-October for an undisclosed price.

Look, there's simply no way Apple isn't eventually going to open up the iPhone to 3rd party support -- it's really a matter of when and how, if you ask us.
Of course, the possibility we've been most anxious about is Apple eschewing the open platform philosophy and starting to vend only "certified' apps via iTunes -- which is what 9to5Mac is now rumoring to be the case, reporting that Cupertino has brought some former Sidekick platform developers into the fold in order to whip up a mobile app sales infrastructure for iTunes.
What's more, the rumor has it things are already progressing along with EA porting games to the iPod touch and iPhone that very same closed-platform model which would leave Apple conveniently in control of app approval, distribution, and presumably pricing.
It's anyone's guess as to whether Apple will pull the trigger in just that way, but something tells us the enterprising open source community won't be so easily deterred.

Nervegas has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:
NES.app lets you play Nintendo games on your iPhone. It is a fully functional, feature-rich Nintendo emulator.
NES.app uses an emulator core we call NESCore, which we've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of Nintendo games. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM imageof any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Landscape Mode: Turn the iPhone counter-clockwise to play in landscape mode
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more
NES.app is not iPhoneNES!
NES.app started as a fork of iPhoneNES v0.01, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features including sound, multitouch support, full-screen, landscape mode, game genie codes, saved games and much more. It now contains zero code from the original iPhoneNES project.
As of recent, stepwhite re-released a much older version of NES.app as iPhoneNES v0.31. We have no idea why, but please be aware that NES.app is in no way affiliated with the iPhoneNES project (which only ever released v0.01 officially). We recommend using the latest version of NES.app instead, which is available below.
1.9.1 [nervegas] Fixed vertical scrolling; fixed minor glitches in some games
Show all 240 scanlines
Palette tweaks to fix zapper for some palettes

The eBook viewer application for the iPhone has been updated to version 1.3. Changes are:
- Super scrolling! Tap the screen once (as in making the toolbars appear and disappear) and you'll see a slider, which will allow you instantaneous access anywhere in the file. (It also gives a good indication of how far you've read within the file.) Thanks to everyone who requested this.
- More fonts available from the Preferences pane! Every font on your iPhone, except those known to not work (mostly variants of American Typewriter, at least as of firmware 1.0.2). For a psychadelic experience, try DB_LCD_Temp-Black.ttf.
- A buttload more text encoding choices. Practically everything available.
- Change the speed of single-tap scrolling in Preferences! Thanks to Ric Ewing for the suggestion.
- Tables no longer foul up the screen width. Currently they're rendered as preformatted text. There will be an option to turn this off in later versions.
- If your book has cover art, it will appear as the splash screen while the book is loading on startup. Remember, put a cover.jpg, cover.png, or cover.gif in your book's folder to take advantage of this. Thanks to tkephart for the suggestion.
- Added a donate button to the About box. Because you always need more guilt.

Here it is folks, the TIFF image we tested that exploits firmware v1.1.1, giving you full root level file access to your iPhone (without upgrading from v1.0.2) and iPod touch. Before you click the link, note the caveats:
This may open up file system access, but it's not a primetime hack, meaning it's not so graceful as to simplify the installation of AppTapp or anything. Once you get file system access you're kind of on your own to get apps working.
Don't hold us responsible if it damages or bricks your device.
You might be able use this on an unactivated v1.1.1 iPhone from Safari, but it's a hella tricky technique. Good luck with this one! [Via TUAW, thanks Camron!]
Please don't hold us responsible if it damages or bricks your device.
Apple will more than likely fix this vulnerability with v1.1.2, or whatever its next firmware version will be. When that happens we'll all be back to the same spot we were the day v1.1.1 was released. So know this is a temporary technique, unless you're committed to using v1.1.1 from here on out.
We are so not responsible if it damages or bricks your device.
None of this will help the sad reality that iUnlock and anySIM still disable the cell radio in v1.1.1, so use those apps at your own risk once you break on through to the other side.
Good luck!
More details
The iPhone / iTouch tif exploit is now officially released!
Navigate to http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com using safari to run the exploit.
THIS ONLY WORKS FOR ITOUCH/IPHONE 1.1.1
Don't use the exploit unless you know what you're doing! This will cause you not to be able to sync from iTunes.
You will need to use IPHUC to access the filesystem. This is for experienced users only.
Please note: After navigating to the exploit site, your safari WILL CRASH and you will be returned to the home screen.
This is the EXPECTED RESULT, it means that the exploit executed!
WAIT FOR A TUTORIAL to be released, if you don't know what you're doing.

It goes without saying that if you sell enough of pretty much anything, you're going to eventually get someone riled up over a missing feature, a broken feature, or in this case, an unwanted feature -- and that someone might just happen to know a lawyer (or worse yet, be one). The latest class action suit against Apple and AT&T over the iPhone, filed in California, reads like a what's-what of complaints we've heard since before the phone was even released: the carrier shouldn't be charging an early termination fee for a phone that isn't subsidized, its international roaming plan is a total ripoff compared to a prepaid SIM that you'd normally buy to use with an unlocked handset, and most notably, that neither AT&T nor Apple have the right to purposefully damage (via firmware update) or void the warranty of a "lawfully" unlocked iPhone. All told, the suit rocks the two companies with a grand total of six counts -- alleging violations of a garden variety of state and federal laws -- each asking for between $200 and $600 million in cold, hard cash. Anyone who's bought an iPhone and "sustained damages" from it is entitled to participate, so put on your lawyerin' pants and enjoy the courtroom action.

News from the coder himself and he discusses GP2X and the Upcoming KIller Console codenamed craiginator:
Currently 56.52 percent of zodttd.com visitors would like to hear me ramble. This is great news! I love to ramble on. It usually is about something technology related, but this special 56.52% want me to specifically talk about my ongoing development projects. Crazy, I know.
So to please the the majority, I have whipped together this summary of instant gratification.
- PSX4ALL
This is what keeps me active within the homebrew gaming community. I've been working on it for years now, and sometimes it gets better. For those of you who are strangely unaware yet reading this, psx4all is a Sony Playstation emulator focused on being portable within a range of low-performance handhelds. The largest community of users of psx4all is the great GP2X handheld community.
Unai has been busy with his day job and has been unable to get much put into psx4all as of late. He's done so much already, he deserves some rest.
Hlide is currently focusing on figuring out why my crazy dynarec is performing as well as it is. We tried some optimizations to the dynarec where we expected slight, but noticeable gains. We didn't get the gains. So he is very determined to get this emulator in tip top shape, even if it means we start rewriting this emu from scratch and plug in some existing parts such as Unai's already excellent GPU. Taking things step by step, Hlide is researching other dynarecs and static binary translation techniques and seeing how they handle things such as register allocation. It's always good to learn from others who have been writing similar code and have dealt with pitfalls that are to be encountered. If this week of dynarec improvements to the current psx4all ARM Dynarec core don't shape up, we may consider tearing out a lot of existing framework and using hlide's work in progress psx emulator sources. This project is being worked on by at least one team member every day. It may be the Craiginator handheld that brings this emulator to life though.
- DOSBOX
I recently got back in touch with c2woody ("wd") from the DosBox team. I am getting my Sharp Zaurus C1000 out. Dusting it off, and compiling the 0.72 DosBox build for it. The next step, get an ARM Dynarec running! Simple? No. Fun? Yes!
- CRAIGINATOR
Wouldn't OpenTTD be really cool on a wide resolution VGA touchscreen? Wouldn't DosBox be better with a hardware based keyboard and an ARM Dynarec to allow for more "recent" DOS titles? Wouldn't PSX4ALL be great if it were running fullspeed, sound, and all, and gave me some room to not work constantly on performance but allow me to polish it up as well?
- COMMERCIAL DEV
I'm currently working for a great dev studio on commercial handheld development. While my freetime is limited, I strive to use that little bit to get my projects done. All the while, keeping you, the reader, informed.
A quick summary of the status of projects on my plate at the moment. But wait, there's more! I'm going to be need to talk gadgets soon!

Folks hoping that Apple would be so kind as to allow developers to craft their own 3rd party applications and have Cupertino accept 'em with open arms can now commence sulking, as a new WebApps directory unveiled today by Apple is nothing more than a dressed up version of Apple's bookmark list. Essentially, Apple has neatly brought together a selection of company-approved apps (listed here) that should function fine in Safari, but alas, there's absolutely no new functionality. So although iPod touch / iPhone users now have a central hub to go to for links to web applets, Apple is still leaving us high and dry when it comes to native 3rd party application support outside of its browser.

The eBook reader for the iPhone has been updated with a new release. Changes are:
New options in Preferences panel: "Smart" text file conversion--if it's ON, it's the same behavior as always; if it's OFF, you might have better luck with lists, or with books that don't use double-newlines to denote paragraphs. Also, you can turn off HTML table rendering; try this if tables make your book's layout too wide for the iPhone screen.
More subtle progress indicator on launch, and improved cover splash if you have cover art for your books.
Miscellaneous optimizations and bug fixes.

- 12 Oct 2007 Version 1.11 (huh, how coincidental) will run on 1.1.1 and now rSBT has been rolled into Customize. It is Universally compatible, so it is safe to run on both 1.0.2 and 1.1.1. See Development Blog (at right) for more info. Special thanks to Shai!! For all his help on version 1.11 adding extra image swapping features.

While we're pretty certain a 16GB iPhone is on the way given the recent emergence of the 16GB iPod touch -- this ain't it. Posted in the user forums at MacRumors and making its way around the interwebs is this supposed 16GB iPhone purported to have just arrived at an Apple store. The jockeys at MacRumors have already pretty much debunked:- The box is using the old Calculator icon even though the firmware is supposedly version 1.1.2
- The iTunes WiFi icon on the box is warped
- Exif data shows a timestamp of 5 days ago (why sit on a scoop for 5 days before posting?)
- Noise is too uniform in the supposed cameraphone picture
And finally, here's the original iPhone about page before being 'shopped!
A couple more photographs here

Erica Sadun has updated her Light program for the iPhone which turns your iPhone into a flashlight. Also a new application redLight has been released which gives out red light instead for amateur astronomers who need to preserve their night vision. You can download both from the homepage here.

The Steve has listened to our incessant whining and now he's writing something I've been waiting to read for many months: "Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers' hands in February."
That's the lead-in from his letter on Apple.com saying the third-party app SDK for native iPhone programs is coming in early '08. It'll also do iPod touch programs. Jobs also explains the delay: Making the iPhone more open while keeping it secure from viruses has been a challenge.
They're taking their time, and doing it right. Arn from Macrumors points out that the piece includes hints that Apple might pick up a digital signature system for app verification.
P.S. Kudos for Businessweek on scooping this ahead of time, but Fake Steve called it first, bluffing or not.
P.P.S We'll really have to wait awhile to find out the exact details of app development to fully celebrate, but right now, I gotta admit, I feel like a born-again fanboy.

I've spent some time over the past few days, and rewrote MandelPod. No longer will it seem to hang your iPod while it draws...
The old module was ported from podzilla0. The new one was rewritten from scratch, to use TTK directly. It also uses TTK's gradient functions to generate the palettes to be used for rendering.
It's also got a switch to see the associated Julia set as well.
(This is all available via source; in SVN 2327)

A new version of iSwitcher, a theme changing application for the iPhone, has been released. Changes are:
iSwitcher has been revised to work with the new 1.1.1 firmware and it's subsequent changes. Primarily there is no longer a DisplayOrder.plist file. So... what does iSwitcher do for you with 1.1.1? It will install and replace all icons and it will load in the associated Dock image. It still copies in the wallpaper and other "SummerBoard" related files (with the hope that SummerBoard will return); however in the current 1.1.1 firmware state, these are not displayed.

The tubes are buzzing this morning with reports that the recent iPod classic 1.0.2 update has a nasty bug in it that causes the drive to constantly spin -- a glitch that's a little more troubling than those freezing issues we heard about, since bumping a spinning platter is a sure way to kill your drive dead. Most users see the problem manifest as the battery draining much more quickly than it should, and it seems to be particularly a problem when using CoverFlow, but others say it's totally random and that replacement iPods with 1.0.2 loaded don't exhibit any symptoms. In any event, iPod Classic owners who haven't updated should probably hold off, and those who have should see how their devices are holding up.

1.10.0 [nervegas] Un-fixed vertical scrolling to fix problems caused by it
Added button bar across bottom
Added 'most recent' view of last 25 played games

TinyGL is a very small software only implementation of a subset of OpenGL for embedded systems. It has been ported to work on top of hotdog, which in turn makes it available to run on the iPod. Source can be found in my personal SVN repository at http://svn.so2.sytes.net/repos/ipod/tinygl/
No it isn't perfect and no it isn't super fast. Yes it does use software floating point, and no I don't plan to change it to fixed point. No you aren't going to be able to port any sort of intensive 3D application to it without expecting absolutely horrible performance. Yes, patches are welcome.

Virtual GameBoy Advance (VGBA) is a program that emulates Nintendo's GameBoy Advance
This release includes fixes to the line coincidence interrupts, EEPROM and FlashROM allocation, and several BIOS routines that have been causing memory corruption. The debugger has got a new GBA-specific view and several bugfixes that have been due for a long time.
Both VGBA-Windows and VGBA-MSDOS use 640x480 display mode now and include much better TV scanline simulation. I have also added a "soft video" mode that smoothes over pixelized edges.
VGBA-Symbian has also got a new "Fill&Soften" zoom mode, screen orientation and backlight controls. Several important bugs affecting VGBA-Symbian stability have been fixed, so it should be much more stable now.
As of October 21 2007, the VGBA-Symbian is available for UIQ3-based phones from Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Unfortunately, I only have one UIQ phone, a Motorola Z8. Please, test fMSX-Symbian on other UIQ3 phones and report your findings by email or via EMUL8 discussion group. The S60 version of VGBA-Symbian has also been updated to 3.4.1.

Well if you like looking through line after line of incomprehensible programming gibberish, make sure to hit up the Read link below, in which the TIFF exploit-based firmware v1.1.1 jailbreak code from team Toc2rta is posted in its entirety. More of an academic exercise for curious geeks than a useful bit of knowledge for the average iPod owner, we're sure there's still some interest out there in seeing exactly how this hack was developed. And as usual, if you do decide to go about 'breaking your device as previously described on these pages, we're, like, totally not responsible for any undesired consequences.

spathiwa has released a new version of Frotz for the iPhone, heres the details/whats new;
Version 0.6 released:
New version now works with 1.1.1. Added game-controlled font/color support.
WARNING! Since I already upgraded my phone, I cannot test this with 1.0.2. The word completion changes I made for 1.1.1 should be portable and still work in 1.0.2, but the keyboard orientation stuff changed as well and I don't have the ability to test it in 1.0.2. If anyone finds it doesn't work in 1.0.2, please file an issue describing the behavior. Thanks.
Actually, someone please file an issue if it DOES work, so I'll know either way.

Sure, Apple's profitability and viability is based on any number of factors, but there's one figure that analysts have been training their calculators on for months that has finally seen the light of day: Apple sold 1,119,000 iPhones in Q4 2007, which ended on September 29th, bringing the grand total to 1,389,000 since launch. That might meet or miss your expectations, but other sales bringing a smile to Jobs' face and a cha-ching to his wallet include a 34% growth in Mac sales year to year and a 17% growth in iPods year to year -- with 10.2 million iPods sold last quarter. The earnings call hasn't started just yet, so hopefully we'll get a few more juicy details on how much AT&T is chipping in to the bottom line these days.

Interesting. Were you at all curious to know how many of the 1.4m iPhones Apple's sold went to US T-Mobile customers and exporters "with the intention to unlock" the handsets? Well, there's no way anyone will ever know for sure, but on today's Apple Q4 earnings call Apple COO Tim Cook (or we think that was Tim Cook) stated that "Apple estimates 250,000 iPhones were sold with intention to unlock," and that "many of those sales happened after the price cut". Definitely not an insignificant number of iPhones not on Apple-authorized networks paying out serious coin for the privilege, so is it any wonder Cupertino's working so hard to lock this stuff down?

The better part of a trade show keynote and six months of anticipation preceded the iPhone's launch, but a casual post on Apple's Web site signaled its relaunch as a platform supported by third-party native applications. Apple's attempt to protect the security of a wireless network by encouraging Web 2.0-based applications taking advantage of Ajax technologies could not realistically mimic the capabilities provided by native applications, at least without some way to provide offline functionality using developing technologies such as Google Gears. Furthermore, there were a host of utilities that have evolved on other smartphones (such as system-wide search or alternative input methods) that were beyond the scope of such an approach.
So, come February, Apple will return to its PC heritage and extend its party to third parties. Developers get their iPhone. Users get their applications. And normally reticent bloggers emerge from their keyboards and podcasting microphones like woodland creatures after a storm, just a little more likely to share their timid opinions with the world. Unfortunately, the rationale of all iPhone hackers cannot be swept away as easily as a fingertip switches among open Web sites in the iPhone's Safari browser.
First is the still-remaining issue of carrier lock-in. While support for the iPhone in the three largest European economies has reduced some of the incentive for this, there are still scores of countries with compatible GSM carriers that do not offer the iPhone. And indeed, in many countries with GSM networks, there are competitive carriers with which Apple has not struck a deal (such as T-Mobile in the U.S.). Exclusives are nothing new in the U.S. celluar industry and often help bring down the price of devices, but the iPhone raised their profile particularly among a group that historically has had a direct and deep relationship with their hardware provider.
Second is the new code-signing requirement, which is certainly a better compromise than limiting the functionality of the iPhone, but doesn't necessarily guarantee freedom to do what a PC developer would. Here, Apple has little control over the supply of hacks, but may be able to sway demand for them depending on how willing it is to certify applications that could conceivably compete with its or its partners' revenue streams. Examples would include voice over IP programs such as Skype or a native version of the Amazon MP3 store. Indeed, one need not go very far down the most-wanted list of iPhone applications to see this conflict as native instant messaging -- supported on many other smartphone platforms -- could cannibalize SMS revenue, one of the few upsell opportunities that AT&T has at this point.
Apple could have controlled the distribution of iPhone applications by using iTunes as the exclusive distribution point for loading, much as it has for games on the iPod. Code-signing has the opportunity to encourage a much richer ecosystem of applications, but while third-party applications may function beneath your fingers, Apple could still hold developers under its thumb.

The estimated 250,000 of you out there with unlocked iPhones stuck at firmware 1.0.2 can finally get your 1.1.1 on, as the iPhone Elite crew has released their "revirginizer" tool, which will restore your phone to pristine condition and allow the 1.1.1 update to proceed smoothly before you unlock that bad boy once again. As always, it's probably best to wait a few days and see how well things are working, but the brave amongst you can snag what you need at the read link.

ColEm is a Coleco Vision emulator for UIQ3 phones.
The ColecoVision was Coleco Industries' second generation home video game console, released in August, 1982. The ColecoVision offered arcade-quality graphics and gaming style, the ability to play other home consoles' video games (notably the Atari 2600), and the means to expand the system's hardware. ColecoVision was released with an initial catalog of 12 video game titles, with 10 additional titles on the way for 1982. All told, approximately 170 titles were released in the form of plug-in cartridges between 1982 and 1985.

Coincidence or not, Apple has stiffened up the requirements to pick up a new iPhone shortly after announcing that 250,000 or so of the 1.4 million it sold in Q4 went to unlockers. In an admittedly intriguing move, Apple has decided that it will "no longer accept cash for iPhone purchases," and moreover, each individual will only be allowed to buy two (on plastic, of course) in an effort to "stop people from reselling them." More specifically, spokeswoman Natalie Kerris stated that the company is "requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers," so don't even bother bringing the greenbacks if you're lookin' to grab an iPhone from Apple.

It is now possible to Jailbreak your iPhone and/or iPod Touch over the web simply by visiting http://www.jailbreakme.com/ in your Safari browser. Once you do so Safari will disappear and return to the Home screen, don't touch anything for a minute or two until the Slide To Unlock screen appears. Once it does, you can slide to unlock and the Installer.app will now be installed on your iPhone or iPod Touch!
Please note the website may be down as I guess many people are trying this, so be patient and it should be back online soon.

This is a port of the Asterisk PBX to the Apple iPhone. It is still in early testing, but it complies, runs, and handles calls without issue. All the code is released under the GPL v2. Tested with iPhone firmware 1.0.2, not tested with 1.1.1.
Feedback is much appreciated. If you are using Asterisk on your iPhone successfully, or are having issues, or have some patches, please let the author know. http://www.mgamble.ca/oss/iphone_asterisk/
