A lucky Samsung fan has received a free customised Galaxy S3 after amusing the company with a drawing of a cute dragon going ‘RWAR’.
After asking for a free Galaxy S3 on the company’s Canadian Facebook page, the fan, named Shane, received a customised phone featuring his own artwork.
Although initially Shane’s request was turned down, in which he was offered a picture of a kangaroo riding a unicycle instead, Samsung decided to award him with a free phone after the story went viral in May via Reddit, ahead of the Galaxy S3’s launch in Canada.
http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/...n-phone/029034
According to Samsung, this is the only customised Galaxy S3 in Canada. It features Shane’s MS Paint-style drawing on the front and back of the phone as well as a special wallpaper on the screen’s background.
Now let’s see how many other fanboys swamp Samsung Canada’s Facebook page with drawings of imaginary creatures…

For a start, 66 per cent of owners are male.
The iPad continues to slay every hint of competition on the tablet market, and with three versions now available, Infographic Labs has observed just exactly who uses the Apple devices.
Interestingly, it seems to be a boys toy as males occupy two-thirds of the ownership.
Most users are aged between 25 and 36, and 53.2m people now own an iPad, compared to 11.5m in 2010.

Internet rumour that Samsung bitch-slapped Apple by sending them 21 billion five cent coins is amazingly untrue.
The story goes…
Yesterday, more than 30 trucks filled with five cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California.
Apple security were in the process of freaking out before Apple CEO Tim Cook was called by Samsung explaining that they will pay all$1.05 billion dollars of their fine in coins, and this was the first instalment.
Various legitimate sources have reported the story, saying that as the court did not specify a payment method, Samsung can pay Apple the enormous fine however they see fit, and it has chosen to be the biggest troll in the world.
Sadly, the story is not true at all. So, over the next few days when someone passes it off as fact, you can set them straight. The story originated on humour site 9gag, a place normally reserved for z-list memes and screenshots of Facebook statuses.

Motorola's war with Apple has certainly been overshadowed by the showdown with Samsung. But, with the latter melodrama shifting into quiet mode, focus is coming back to the battle with Moto. That ongoing story has taken a rather unexpected turn, however. A filing on Monday revealed that the Google subsidiary has agreed to license some (if not all) of its standards-essential patents to Cupertino... inGermany, at least. When exactly the deal was struck isn't clear, and neither side has announced a royalty rate as of yet. It could be that the German courts will decide what is appropriate according to FRAND rules, but the agreement also includes an admission by Apple that it is liable for past damages relating to these patents. The terms seem to include only "cellular standard-essential" patents, which means the company's claims regarding WiFi and video codecs could still be used as an avenue of attack. But, with at least one set of FRAND patents set aside, we wouldn't be surprised if the rest followed. It may be that Moto has simply decided to pick its fights more carefully, in light Apple's recent legal victory and growing pressure from the European Commission surrounding potential abuse of standards-essential patents. Or, it could be an olive branch and a sign that the patent wars are winding down -- a possibility we'd joyously embrace.

New startup looks to make portable gaming more accessible
PlayMG, a new startup formed by veterans of the electronics, game and social industries, is launching the first dedicated Android gaming portable, called the MG, this holiday season. The MG is a completely Wi-Fi based device so their are no data plans, and the unit itself comes with a suggested retail price of $169.99.
Eager consumers who support the device on Kickstarter can get it for less. The first 2,000 early adopters who visit Kickstarter and pledge $99 will be rewarded with an MG, while other supporters will be able to order their MG for $149. [Note: the Kickstarter page will go live tomorrow.]
When the MG ships it'll come with preloaded games and a cash credit toward future game purchases. The MG runs on Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), which "means many of the great game apps designed to operate on ICS can be fully experienced on the MG, unlike many of the mobile devices locked into data plans by service providers that haven't upgraded," the company noted.
Looking at the portable's specifications, it features a 4-inch touchscreen, 4GB built in memory with SD port for expandable memory ability, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and ability to shoot and play video, and a stereo headset jack. [Update: we now know that it has a Cortex A5 processor.]
Additionally, PlayMG has introduced an MG Origins Avatar System, which means that as gamers use the MG, "they gain points, and can customize and unlock the origin story of their own personal gaming companion."
Another interesting feature is the MG Family Collaboration System, which includes the "DebitSmart" Digital Wallet and "Remote Trust" notification function. Essentially, parents can establish a reloadable debit account for their teen's MG and create "game allowances" that link their credit card or bank account to whatever set amount they determine. This ensures no surprise charges.
As for the MG's "Remote Trust" notification system, that allows kids to discover, download and play the games from the app marketplace, and at the same time parents can opt in to receive email updates on their kids' MG activity.
"Like the music business before it, the gaming industry is experiencing a dramatic digital transformation, where emerging 'app based gaming' is becoming the dominant method of playing and purchasing games," said T. Scott Edwards, PlayMG Founding Partner and Marketing Guru. "The MG's price will mean some kids will be able to enjoy app gaming for the very first time, and parents will be happy to discover the MG will mean their kids are finally going to stop asking to borrow their smartphones and tablets."
"We kept the startup of our company and the MG system close to the vest until we felt we could announce it in all its glory after extensive R&D and multiple rounds of prototype testing," he added. "Our approach has meant we can be more nimble and innovative than the 'Big Guys' because we aren't stuck with their large overhead costs, legacy businesses and slow corporate structure."
Logistics of any device launch can be complicated, so PlayMG has decided to sign up with Fulfillment by Amazon. The company is also currently in talks with major retailers throughout the country.

The Apple-1 is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £80,000.
The 1976 machine will be auctioned off within Christie’s Travel, Science and Natural History sale in London on October 9th.
“This is the computer that started Apple, now recognised as the most valuable company in the world; its significance in making computer technology accessible for all cannot be undervalued,” commented James Hyslop, scientific specialist at Christie’s.
Ground-breaking at the time of its invention and intended to make technology more accessible, the Apple-1 consisted of a pre-assembled motherboard, representing a major step forward in the world of computing when all other examples on the market were bought as self-assembly kits requiring engineering prior to use.
Priced at $666.66, the first Apple-1s were sent to purchasers direct from the garage of Steve Jobs' parents' house. It is not clear how many Apple-1s were sold, but by April 1977 the price was dropped to $475.
It was officially discontinued by October 1977, after approximately 200 units were produced. It is estimated that less than fifty are still in existence today.

And most of the traffic comes from the iPad.
Special offers site dealnews says Americans spend around 38 per cent more time shopping on their mobile devices in summer – perhaps a result of buying bargains on-the-move during on sunny days out.
In fact, 22.5 per cent of total dealnews site traffic came from mobile devices on last month's Independence Day (July 4th), the highest across the season for both 2012 and 2011.
That's equivalent to a 43 per cent rise on average weekday mobile traffic, while the iPad accounted for 40 per cent of all visits on the day, ahead of 30 per cent and 26 per cent for the iPhone and Android devices, respectively.
Dan de Grandpre, CEO of dealnews, said: "Since more people are shopping from their mobile devices now than ever before, it's imperative that retailers and merchants invest in dedicated mobile sites to improve consumers' mobile shopping experience."
Last week, Travelzoo US reported a summer mobile visit surge, with connected devices accounting for a quarter of total web traffic.

Apple could be carving up a slice of contactless action.
NFC is thought to play a huge part in the future of mobile payments, with more operators and OEMs jumping into the space, perhapsmost noticeably demonstrated with Samsung's high-end Galaxy S III.
Rival firm Apple is now thought to be eyeing a leap into the contactless market, as AppleInsider reports an iPhone 5 casing that appears to have an NFC chip inside.
The Cupertino giant revealed Passbook in June, an iOS 6 m-commerce hub that will aggregate all daily deals and payment services in one place, but no direct NFC comment has been made.
Similarly, no official talk of an iPhone 5 has been offered, but the device is thought to be unveiled on September 12th.

Android snatches four per cent of iOS' market share.
Mobile marketing and ad firm Velti says Apple devices account for 58 per cent of in-app ad impressions, but iPhone's share has fallen from 31 per cent to 27 per cent, while iPod Touch has dipped from 22 per cent to 19 per cent.
This made room for Android to climb by four per cent, though iOS still dominates the tablet market, an area that continues to see rivals struggle against the iPad.
iPad in-app ad impressions climbed from nine per cent to 12 per cent, supported by its recent egging-free tablet launch in China where traffic surged by 150 per cent in its debut week.
The new iPad is now actually catching up with the iPad 2's impressions, accounting for 20 per cent in five, while its predecessor reached 24 per cent in the same time period.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Fire is the leading Android device with a 38 per cent share, despite Samsung the number one Android tablet maker.

Activision has revealed its intentions to become much more involved in the mobile space.
The company's mobile VP Greg Canessa emphasized to CVG the strength in the variety of brands Activision could consider for mobile efforts.
"We have a rich thirty-year history from the Atari days to the Blizzard merger. We have about 350 different brands and IPs to work with," Canessa said. "That’s legacy IP, that’s triple-A IP and that’s licences with other companies."
Canessa added the publisher will look to use its big marketing campaigns for its mobile titles as well.
"The creation of new IP is expensive, and when you consider how much money we spend on marketing our IP, we can apply that halo affect [sic] to our mobile properties. That gives us a tremendous advantage. You are going to continue to see us take advantage of our big marketing campaigns to help our mobile products too."

Google expresses concern that ruling could limit consumer access to Android devices
Apple is seeking to ban sales of eight Samsung phones following its landmark $1bn lawsuit victory against the mobile giant last week.
The world’s most valuable company is attempting to ban the sale of the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and the Galaxy Prevail.
Latest generation sales of the device are not affected however.
As well as being penalised with a $1.05bn fine for infringing six of Apple’s patents,Reuters has reported shares in the company fell 7.5 per cent on Monday, resulting in a loss of $12bn in the firm’s value.
The latest move by Apple, if successful, could see a further de-valuation of the mobile giant.

A leaked internal memo from the telecoms provider has surfaced, which tells its employees to sell against the iPhone.
The document, which was leaked by unofficial T-Mobile news siteTmoNews, certainly indicates that T-Mobile users within the US will not be getting their hands on the new iPhone 5 once it is released.
Whilst there has yet to be any confirmation from the company if they will indeed be stocking the device or not, it would be a highly questionable move to have employees sell against arguably the most anticipated device of the year, if they were set to stock it themselves.

South Korean company suffers $12bn loss in market value as court's decision sends shockwaves across the tech community.
While there is talk that Samsung's patent case loss to Apple could ultimately be beneficial to the company, what matters right now is the firm's plummeting market value.
As shareholders reacted to the $1bn fine imposed by a US court, Samsung - which isn't traded on the US stock market - dropped 7.5 per cent in Korean trading, a loss of more than $12bn in market value.
Alternately, shares of Apple have leapt by more than two per cent, adding nearly $15 billion to the market capitalisation of the world’s most valuable company.
Samsung hopes its efforts to innovate will retain the loyalty of consumers. An internal memo issued by Samsung management after the verdict, said: "History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.
“We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritise innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt."
