Nvidia has issued a recall for the Shield Android tablet after determining that its battery "can overheat, posing a fire hazard." Although the recall is voluntary, Nvidia is asking users to back up their data and fill in the relevant online formto receive a replacement. The issue pertains to tablets sold between July 2014 and July 2015. You can check to see if your tablet is affected by heading to the Settings menu, clicking "About tablet," then "Status," and looking at the "Battery" section. If you see "B01," you can carry on using the Shield as normal. If you see "Y01," though, your tablet is at risk of overheating and you should arrange a replacement ASAP.

For developers, allowing the public to evaluate apps before general release is paramount -- it helps weed out the bugs that could derail an otherwise successful launch. Both Apple and Google offer the capability, but TestFlight features have only been baked into iOS for the better part of a year and Android owners have typically had to jump through a number of hoops in order to sign up. With that in mind, Google has made some welcome changes that take the hassle out of the process.

Samsung's earlier prediction for the second quarter of 2015 was spot on: the company has failed to hit its goals when it comes to the sales of its flagship devices. Its operating profits fell four percent to 6.9 trillion won ($5.9 billion), and the mobile division's, in particular, slid to 2.76 trillion won ($2.4 billion) from 4.42 trillion won ($3.8 billion) from the same quarter last year. While those profit numbers are still three percent higher than the last, it's going to be tough to play catch up this second half of 2015, as Apple's slated to reveal its new iPhones -- its main rival in the world of high-end smartphones. In order to combat the expected sales drop, Samsung is "adjusting" (read: dropping) the prices of both the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge. It's already planning to introduce new premium smartphones: the company has already teased an event for August 13th, where it's likely to introduce a new Galaxy Note and a larger S6 Edge.

In case you haven't heard, Windows 10 is here, and the version for phones will arrive soon. To help you prepare, Microsoft posted the initial list of Lumia handsets that'll be privy to the free upgrade later this year. The collection of mobile devices includes Lumia 430, Lumia 535, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, Lumia 930 and others for 10 total. This means that if you own one of group, or have been thinking about picking one up, you'll be able to grab the new software when it's released. Of course, Windows 10 Mobile will deliver those universal apps, a retooled Action Center and Microsoft's new Edge browser. For the full list of phones that will be included in the initial update, jump down past the break. Bummed because your daily driver didn't make the cut? Don't fret: this is the first set and there could be more included later.

Apple is testing a service that will let Siri take your calls, record them and transcribe them to text, according to Business Insider. The company is reportedly referring to it as iCloud Voicemail, and it's similar to the existingvisual voicemail service. However, instead of playing a pre-recorded message to your caller when you can't pick up, Siri will take over the chore. It can then let certain contacts know where you are and why you can't take the call, provided you give permission. The voice message will then be shunted over to Apple's servers and transcribed into text.

Unlocking a door with your smartphone feels like the future, but you still have to fish something out of your pocket to do it. If you happen to own one of the Yves Behar designed August smart locks, however, you can open it with something on your wrist -- an Apple Watch. You can now lock and unlock the device "with just a swipe and a tap" on a Watch, according to August. In addition, you can view a log of who has come and gone, and get a notification when someone locks or unlocks your door.

These are dark days for Sony's smartphone business. The division saw sales drop 16.3 percent over the past year, and is losing money faster than PlayStation is making it. The answer to this problem, according to Sony, is to release two new mid range smartphones to this month, the Xperia C5 Ultra and the Xperia M5. Both focus heavily on imaging, with the C5 Ultra offering two 13-megapixel Exmor RS cameras (one on the front, one on the back) that will hopefully capture some impressive shots. The front-facing camera has a 22m wide-angle lens for all your #welfie needs, and even a front-facing flash. Cameras aside, the C5 Ultra (pictured above) has a 1.7GHz octa-core processor, a 6-inch 1080p display, and a 2,930mAh battery that Sony claims is good for two days use.

Still wondering what Samsung is going to unveil at its August 13th event? Well-known tipster Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) might have just removed what few doubts are left. He not only posted official-looking snapshots of both theGalaxy Note 5 and its curvier S6 Edge+ sibling, but revealed purported specs for the Note 5. From all indications, at least the Note 5 is going to be more of a refinement (at least, in terms of hardware) of the Note 4 than a revolution. You're still looking at a 5.7-inch quad HD display, a 16-megapixel rear camera and 32GB of built-in storage. The biggest changes are the Galaxy S6's octa-core processor, a bump to 4GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel front cam... and, unfortunately for some, the removal of the microSD card slot.

In the wake of the Stagefright bug, LG has reportedly committed to posting monthly security updates to protect its Android smartphones. It's the third company in two days to pledge to ensure that its devices aren't left wide open for hackers, since Google and Samsung both said the same yesterday. The announcement was reported by Wired, who quotes an unnamed LG source as saying that it'll provide the updates on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, these updates will still have to be passed fit for purpose by the carriers, who frequently drag their feet when it comes to getting them out to consumers.

HTC has announced "significant cuts" and slashed jobs after posting a $265 million net loss, with more losses promised for the future. Reuters is reporting that the poor performance has been blamed on the company's One series of flagships that, while accomplished, are losing out to "more fashionable phones" in the market. TechCrunch is saying that HTC is hoping to reverse this trend by turning its attentions to the middle-tier of the market, devices that cost between $300 and $500, parking its tanks squarely on the lawns of Chinese rivals Huawei and Xiaomi.

With NFL teams set to kick off their pre-season next week, Microsoft today announced that the Surface Pro 2 won't be used during games anymore. Instead, the upcoming 2015-2016 season will see its Sideline Viewing System, which lets players and coaches review game photos instantly, be powered bySurface Pro 3s for the first time. But that's not the only change being made. Microsoft and the NFL are also going to start testing video as part of the Sideline Viewing System, including replays of questionable calls that referees can watch via the custom-made device. Even though this is only going to be a test run (over 20 pre-season games), it will be a significant move if it ends up being implemented in the regular season. Microsoft's laptop/tablet hybrid has already replaced the traditional paper method for most teams, and it could do the same with monitors on the field -- the current way of watching replays by officials.

When you're using Google Maps in the dark, the iOS app's blinding bright white display can kill your night vision. Good thing then that a new updateaddresses that and adds a few other welcome improvements. Now you can label waypoints on your map and in search suggestions according to the patch notes, and even alter captions for photos that you've added as well. Of course, there's the usual bug fixes along for the ride as well, but it's not like those will keep you from going blind on your way home from the bonfire you checked into via Facebook.

You'll notice something new if you visit Apple's website right now. Things might look the same at first glance, but a closer look reveals the absence of the "Store" tab. Apple has chosen to get rid of its separate online shop entirely -- "store.apple.com" doesn't exist anymore and redirects to the homepage if you load it. Instead, you'll find Buy buttons in each specific product page, and clicking them adds items to a unified shopping bag (yep, it's no longer a "cart" either) instead of forwarding you to the store subdomain like in the past.

Microsoft has just released a bunch of productivity apps for wearable devices -- nope, not for the Band, but for Android Wear smartwatches and the Apple Watch. First for the Apple Watch is Outlook, which allows you to read full emails and respond with either canned replies or your own through voice dictation. Cupertino's wearable also gets to-do app Wunderlist and will soon be able to install private social network Yammer, which will be able to take advantage of iOS 8's Handoff feature with an iPhone.

Apple began rolling out the latest version of its multi boot utility, Boot Camp 6, on Thursday. It supports newly-released Windows 10 (64-bit edition only) as well as USB 3, USB-C, Thunderbolt, SD and SDXC connections. Users will need to be running OS X Yosemite and have an authentic copy of Windows 10 installed on a separate partition. The update is still propagating, according toMacRumors, but should be available to Intel Mac owners shortly. That includes the 13- and 15-inch MBPs, 11- and 13-inch MBAs, MacBook, MacMini, and various iMacs. Users don't actually have to do anything to get the update, as it will download automatically if you're already running the latest rev of Boot Camp 5.

At Samsung's big Unpacked event today, the company unveiled two new flagship phones: the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5. But, as we've learned, only one of them is headed to the UK. The S6 Edge+ -- a super-sized version of Samsung's curved-screen beauty -- will be up for preorder on August 18th, before its official launch on September 4th. No pricing information is available just yet, but one way or another, all the major carriers have effectively confirmed they'll be ranging it, so no great surprises there. What is pretty surprising, though, is Samsung's decision not to release the new Note 5 over here. In fact, S Pen diehards across Europe will be saddened to hear the Note 5 is only slated to launch in the US and Asia -- at least for now, anyway. Samsung told us that it hasn't ruled out a European release entirely, but it certainly isn't happening this year. As to the reason? Samsung hasn't volunteered one yet, but we'll let you know if/when we manage to track one down.

Samsung has dropped a surprise at its Unpacked 2015 event by showing off a new Gear S2 smartwatch. The model appears to be a far cry from the original Gear S, however. Samsung has upped the style quotient considerably with a round watch face, metal body and new user interface. Given the naming convention (it lacks the "Galaxy" moniker that generally denotes Android), it likely runs on Samsung's Tizen OS rather than Android Wear, like the original Gear S.

Those rumors that Samsung would launch an oddball keyboard add-on? They're true. The Korean tech firm has unveiled a Keyboard Cover for theGalaxy Note 5 that, as the name suggests, gives you both a case and a hardware keyboard for those times when you need to punch out long messages. Samsung is shy on details, but it looks like the screen adapts to the keyboard. There are conventional navigation buttons to replace the capacitive ones you've lost, as well. We can't imagine too many Note 5 owners picking this up (part of the point is that big screen), but it could hit the spot if you're jonesing for a BlackBerry-like experience on an Android phone.

In case the news hasn't already been spoiled for you, Samsung just officially revealed two new phablets, and the updated Galaxy Note 5 is easily the more fascinating of the pair. It's the sleekest, most powerful Note yet (obviously), but -- more importantly -- it's also the most elegant. In fact, after spending a little time with the Note 5, it began to feel like the sort of device that might change a Note naysayer's mind about the "giant screen-writing phone" formula entirely.

It's been less than six months since Samsung pulled back the curtain on the eye-catching Galaxy S6 Edge, and now it's getting a very familiar-looking sibling. Say hello to the Galaxy S6 Edge+, a super-sized sequel that powers up the original formula with a larger screen, more RAM to help its multitasking prowess and... well, not a whole lot else. Oh, and before we go any further, you'll be able to pick one up from all five major US carriers starting on August 21st (update: we have pricing, see the end of the post).

iPads are apparently not doing too hot at the moment, and Apple is looking for a way to reverse the drop in sales that's been going on the past six quarters. According to The Wall Street Journal, Cupertino hopes to accomplish that by making its tablets more enticing to businesses. The WSJ also reports the tech juggernaut is working with over 40 unknown enterprise app developers in an initiative that's internally called "mobility partner program" (MPP). The members in the alliance are developing iOS apps for entrepreneurs, such as accounting and digital cash register programs. Apple's also encouraging them to collaborate and create apps that work together. In addition, the partners are expected to send representatives to train Apple's business specialists.

Apple has made much ado of Spotlight's smart, info-fetching abilities in iOS 9and OS X El Capitan, but one relatively undersold feature might just prove a lifesaver if you or your friends are frequent travelers. Both of the upcoming operating systems include a "flight data detector" that can spot mentions of flight numbers in apps and let you peek at that trip's details (a feature Google Now and Cortana users are already familiar with). This doesn't just mean the departure or arrival times, either -- in many situations, you'll also get a map showing you where the aircraft should be at that moment. While this won't replace a dedicated travel app, it'll be handy if you want to check for flight delays or satisfy your curiosity about an airplane's location.

Outlook is now a more powerful tool if you get a lot of work done on your phone... or just need a quick ride to the airport. To begin with, the iOS versions of Excel, PowerPoint and Word have received tight integration with Outlook. You can send a document you're working on as an Outlook email attachment, or edit someone else's attachment and return directly to Outlook with a new message ready and waiting. Also, some big, promised third-party Outlook web add-ons have gone live. You can set Uber ride notifications in your calendar, or put Evernote clippings into email. Boomerang will schedule both meetings and messages, while PayPal lets you pay a friend for last night's meal. Tie-ins withIFTTT, Wunderlist and Yelp are still "coming soon," but there's already plenty here to keep you busy.

Apple has come a long, long way in its attitude toward NFC. The company seemingly went out of its way to avoid the short-range wireless tech for years after others embraced it, but it quickly became one of the biggest users last year thanks to Apple Pay. And now, it's ready to guide the standard's future -- the company has joined the top ranks of the NFC Forum, giving it the same level of influence as the likes of Google, Intel and Samsung, among others. Clearly, Apple isn't having regrets about welcoming NFC with open arms.

Parallels' Access app just became considerably more useful... even if you're bent on goofing off. The company has released version 3.0 of its remote access tool, which includes experimental support for playing your PC's games on your iOS device. If you're determined to play League of Legends or Skyrim on your iPad, you can create custom touch controls to make the experience relatively enjoyable. The iOS camp also gets a little extra fun through an Apple Watchapp that lets you start remote connections from your wrist.

iOS 9's split-screen feature will only work properly on the iPad Air 2, because it's only one in the existing lineup with hardware capable of supporting it.9to5mac and developer Hamza Sood, however, found proof in OS X El Capitan that Apple's releasing a new iPad mini, and that it will also be capable of supporting split-screen apps. They found a resource file from within the upcoming platform's Safari browser that clearly states that an iPad mini will get "half screen" capability, as you can see below the fold.

Reports came out earlier this year that the next iPhones will have Force Touch -- a feature that makes it easy to access particular content or functions by pressing down on a pressure-sensitive screen with haptic feedback. Now,9to5mac has more details about the feature, which was introduced on theApple Watch's screen and new MacBook's trackpad. Apparently, Force Touch for Apple's mobile devices is known internally as "Orb" and is meant to provide shortcuts for the platform. For instance, the publication's sources said pressing down on a destination on the Maps apps automatically begins turn-by-turn directions. Doing so on a song listing within the Music app, on the other hand, brings up a menu you can use to quickly add it to a playlist or save it for offline listening.

iPhone users have low-level Metal code to speed up games and other visually intensive apps, but what if you're an Android fan? Don't worry, you'll get your boost soon. Google has announced that Android will soon support Vulkan, an open graphics standard that cuts a lot of the computing overhead and gives apps more direct control over video hardware. It's not as easy to work with as OpenGL, but it should let developers wring more performance out of your phone's processor. That could prove very important when you'd otherwise struggle to run a game on a lower-end phone, or want to get pretty, high-detail graphics on a shiny new flagship. It'll be a while before Vulkan for Android is ready -- the standard itself isn't available, let alone Google's implementation of it -- but it should be worth the wait if your Android devicesdouble as game consoles.

Microsoft recently unveiled plans to launch its Cortana digital voice assistant on arch-rival Google's Android OS, but until now, you could only use it as a standalone app. However, the latest beta (1.0.0.204) lets you activate Cortana instead of Google Now by pressing and holding your Android home button. That's a new way for Android users to test the app's friendly ways and be tempted away from the businesslike Google Now. Since Cortana relies on Bing, it's also a sneaky way for Microsoft to do an end-run around Google search.

Google is rebooting its much-hyped Android One project that's supposed to bring low-priced smartphones to emerging markets. The company's managing director in India, Rajan Anandan, told the Financial Times that the program has "not delivered to expectations," due to shortages of the devices. In addition, they have cost as much as $100, limiting their appeal in the price-sensitive region. Of course, Google's ultimate goal is to increase its search business in huge emerging markets by getting connected devices into consumers' hands. It's now going to focus on hitting the pricing "sweet spot" in India -- between $30 and $50.

Tablet shipments have continued to fall during Q2 2015, declining by 11 per cent year-on-year, so says analyst Canalys.
After three years of growth, the tablet market peaked in Q3 2014, but shipments have dipped to 42.5 million units year-on-year, with tablets falling in every worldwide region in Q2 2015.
Apple is leading the tablet market according to Canalys, with the firm taking the top spot in four key countries.
Tim Coulling, senior analyst at Canalys, said: “In the consumer space, demand for premium tablets in established markets has noticeably slowed but is not going to disappear. The top five countries accounted for half the world’s tablet shipments and Apple led in all but one, Brazil. It is well placed to continue leading the market for the time being.”
Sales in high-growth markets are also dropping as large-screen smartphones are growing in popularity.
In addition, Canalys believes tablets will have to compete against more two-in-one devices, which have been designed to take advantage of Windows 10.
Coulling added: “Despite the sudden downturn in shipments, tablets are certainly here to stay. Yes, they have matured and commoditised quickly, but there are still opportunities for vendors to profit from the category.
“Unlike consumers, businesses have been slow when it comes to mass adoption of tablets. They are willing to spend more on products that satisfy a specific need and meet key requirements, around durability for example."
Analyst IDC also previously revealed that the tablet market has declined by seven per cent year-on-year during Q2 2015,
This news comes after Canalys revealed that Lenovo has overtaken Apple in the PC market, with a 15 per cent market share.

When Canonical's phone-centric adaptation of Ubuntu first made it onto devices last year, it received a mostly "wait-and-see" reception. For anyone outside Europe, they didn't have much choice, since it was unavailable elsewhere. Now, BQ has opened sales of the Ubuntu phones worldwide. That said, the devices still have technological restrictions. "Both of these devices support GSM bands 850, 900, 1,800 and 1,900, as well as UMTS 900 and 2,100 — so you're not going to get any joy if you're on a CDMA network like Verizon."

It was only in 2010 that Samsung introduced the Galaxy S, the first in its incredibly popular series of flagship smartphones. It had a 4-inch display, which was large for its time. A year later, however, the phone was dwarfed by the then-mammoth 5.3-inch screen on the first Galaxy Note. By 2011 standards, the Note was so large, it implied that it was aimed at a customer the size of an NBA center. And it popularized a new term—phablet—that indicated it straddled the line between phone and tablet.

Samsung's latest attempt to appeal Apple's 2012 patent infringement victoryhas fallen flat. A U.S Federal Court of Appeals rejected the Korean electronics giant's bid for reconsideration yesterday, reports the San Jose Mercury News. The original 2012 trial ended with the jury saying Samsung had infringed on some of Apple's patents in its phone designs, and called for Samsung to pay around $1 billion dollars in damages. Subsequent court decisions eventually lowered that figure to around $548 million. Surprisingly, Samsung got some big supporters of its latest appeal, including Google, HP and Facebook. Following this latest decision, Samsung's only option now is to get the Supreme Court to reverse the damages ruling. But given how bluntly the appeals court rejected this bid, there's little chance of a complete reversal.

Google recently reiterated their commitment to the goal of a $50 smartphone in India, and a new article breaks down exactly what that means for the phone's hardware. A budget display will eat up about about $8 of that budget — it's actually somewhat amazing that so little money can still buy a 4-4.5" panel running at 854x480. For another $10, you can get a cheap SoC — something in the range of 1.3Ghz and quad-core, complete with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS radios. A gigabyte of RAM and 4 gigabytes of storage can be had for another $10 or so. Throw in a $2.10, 1,600 mAh battery and a $5 camera unit, and you've got most of a phone. That leaves about $9 to play with for basic stuff like a casing, and then packaging/marketing costs (some of which could be given freely, like the design work.) Profit margins will be nonexistent, but that's less of an issue for Google, who simply wants to spread the reach of Android.

According to Ars Technica, Windows 10 will still send telemetry and other data to Microsoft-owned domains — no matter how tightly you crank down the privacy settings. Even with everything buttoned down, Cortana, OneDrive, and Web Search from the Start Menu disabled, the OS still phones home, using a random system ID that persists across reboots. It apparently also tries to bypass proxies to do it. "Some of the traffic looks harmless but feels like it shouldn't be happening. For example, even with no Live tiles pinned to Start (and hence no obvious need to poll for new tile data), Windows 10 seems to download new tile info from MSN's network from time to time, using unencrypted HTTP to do so. ... Other traffic looks a little more troublesome. Windows 10 will periodically send data to a Microsoft server named ssw.live.com. ... The exact nature of the information being sent isn't clear—it appears to be referencing telemetry settings—and again, it's not clear why any data is being sent at all. We disabled telemetry on our test machine using group policies."

Given that users are operating heavy machinery, tweaking a car system interface is a delicate act. As such, Google has made some subtle changes to the Android Auto home screen in the latest update to show "ongoing activities like music and navigation at a glance." You can now access music playback controls directly from the homescreen -- before, you could see which song was playing but needed to go to another screen to pause it. Navigation is also expanded on the home screen to show turning directions without forcing users over to the main app.

You don't have to wait for a possible software update to put custom faces on your Apple Watch... if you're willing to throw caution to the wind, anyway. Developer Hamza Sood has written code that lets you load the watch face you want, such as a silly animation with variable colors. It's crude (you're modifying a hard-coded list of supported faces), and will most definitely void your warranty while you're using it. However, this might scratch the personalization itch if Watch OS 2's Photo face doesn't go far enough.

Blackphone 2, the second iteration of Silent Circle's privacy-focused handset, is now available for pre-order -- assuming you don't mind reserving a device without knowing its price. The original Blackphone was sold at the flagship-level cost of $629, but remember, this one's more sophisticated than its predecessor, with its front and rear covered in glass. It has a 5.5-inch 1080p display, and inside, it boasts an octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. What makes it different from other phones with similar specs, though, is that it runs an Android-based platform called PrivatOS which includes a suite of secure apps, including ones for encrypted messaging and voice calls.

If you use Skype enough on your Android phone that you can't always make heads or tails of who's calling, today's your day. An updated version of Skype for Android brings the same kind of contact-specific ringtones that you might be used to with conventional calls, so you'll know if it's a BFF or someone who can afford to wait. The same update will be handy if you can't help but share pictures, for that matter -- you can now forward the images you receive in chat, guaranteeing that those baby photos will reach the rest of your Skype-using family. Swing by Google Play if either of these new features happens to reel you in.

We've been hearing about Fossil's wearable tech aspirations for quite some time, and now we're finally getting a look at what the company has been working on. At IDF today, the fashion brand showed off three "connected accessories," all of which are powered by Intel. Sure, we've known the two companies were teaming up, but until now we hadn't seen any tech. The three wearable devices are a connected bracelet, a connected watch and a smartwatch that runs Android Wear. The two companies weren't very forthcoming with specs and features, but from the looks of the devices we saw today, you can expect plenty of silver (and likely some gold) with leather and metal bands. You'll also notice the unsightly black bar that the Moto 360 sports along the bottom of Fossil's smartwatch face. The quick peek today comes as a bit of a teaser ahead of an official launch in time for the holidays and we're sure to get more info in the months to come.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 may never come to the UK, but if you're a phablet fan that doesn't mean you're out of options. The company is also pushing its monstrous 5.7-inch Galaxy S6 Edge+, which is available to pre-order today ahead of its full debut on September 4th. You can buy the 32GB model from Samsung's site for Ł749, or splash an extra Ł80 for double the storage. For comparison, the company is selling the Galaxy S6 for Ł499 at the moment and the regular S6 Edge from Ł669. If buying the device off-contract sounds absurdly expensive -- you can buy four new Moto Gs for the same price, after all -- you can always pick up a subsidised device with your preferred mobile network. Vodafone, O2 and Three, among others, have a wide array of plans for you to mull over.

Google's program to bring cheap Android devices to developing lands has arrived in Africa with the launch of Infinix's HOT 2. The device is available today in six different countries, including Ghana, Ivory Coast and Kenya, setting locals back just just under $90. You certainly get some bang for your buck, with the HOT 2 coming with a quad-core MediaTek CPU, 1GB RAM and 16GB storage. In addition, you'll find a microSD and dualSIM card slots running down one side of the phone. Photography-wise, there's an 8-megapixel primary camera paired with a 2-megapixel forward facer, and the whole thing is topped off with a 5-inch HD screen and a 2,200mAh battery.

To date, you've had to book an appointment to try the Apple Watch in a store. That's something of a hassle when you only want to find out if the Leather Loop is comfy, isn't it? Thankfully, you shouldn't have to jump through hoops any longer. According to 9to5Mac, Apple retail stores are dropping the appointment requirement from this week onward. So long as there's an available staffer and a place at the tryout table, you can stroll up and get a hands-on (wrist-on?) with the company's first wearable. You can still provide your Apple ID if you want to be reminded of your pick later on, but it's no longer a prerequisite.

To put it mildly, Apple's input device roster hasn't changed much in recent years. The Magic Mouse hasn't really been touched since 2009, and the Wireless Keyboard is even older than that. The Cupertino crew must be ready to shake things up, though: regulatory filings for both a Magic Mouse 2 and an updated Wireless Keyboard have shown up at the FCC. It's not certain how the external designs will change (there's no peek at the top of either model), but they're definitely going to get an internal upgrade. The peripherals are jumping from Bluetooth 2.0 to the more efficient Bluetooth 4.2 standard, and it looks like they may ditch AA batteries for built-in lithium-ion packs -- you might not have to swap batteries ever again. While there aren't any clues as to when Apple will deliver either the mouse or the keyboard, we won't be shocked if the two show up alongside new Macs sometime later this year.

If you're wondering why anybody would want to record in VHS quality, well, you clearly never woke up with a strange desire to recreate 80's family home videos that show your dad's mullet in its full glory. In case we've helped you see the light but can't find your parents' decades-old camcorder in the basement, here's the next best thing: an iOS app that can mimic its effects. It's aptly called VHS Camcorder, and TechCrunch says it doesn't only take grainy videos, it also captures crappy audio -- the app's clearly aiming for accuracy.

There's a statistic floating around that says that nearly everyone on Earth has a smartphone, but just over half of them have access to proper sanitation. Between that stat and this report from Gartner, it looks as if a great many smartphone makers should think about starting their own toilet-making businesses. The research firm believes that while the smartphone market is still growing, that rate of growth has now dropped back to 2013 levels. That's because China, long-regarded as a rich seam of un-tapped phone buyers has been exhausted, which is what's prompted these firms to turn to India andAfrica. If that all sounds a bit too business-y, here's the simplified version: everyone who can buy a smartphone already has one, and those people who don't probably can't afford them.

Facebook-owned chat messenger WhatsApp launched a web client earlier this year, but the QR code you need to scan to access it didn't work for iOS devices. If you felt left out that time, update your app and check for "WhatsApp Web" in the Settings section, because the web client is now available for iOS users. Just go to web.whatsapp.com -- you can now see the iPhone listed among its supported devices -- and access "WhatsApp Web" on your iOS app's Settings to scan the QR code that appears on your computer. Once that's done, your conversations will sync, and you can start chatting on the web. Note, however, that the web client is just an extension of the mobile app, so it won't work if your iPhone's not connected to the internet.

Want a closer look at Blackberry's rumored, occasionally leaked Android, keyboard-toting smartphone? Evan Blass (of @evleaks) has unearthed some device videos that offer a closer look at that all-important sliding keyboard, as well as that increasingly obligatory segmented-here's-all-the-parts-of-the-camera-lens-render popularized by Nokia a few years ago. If the return of a physical keyboard wasn't weird enough any more, then how about if the phone, codenamed 'Venice' landing in two different iterations? Certainly, two devices are shown in the video, lining up along each other. Crackberry musesthat Android and BlackBerry 10 iterations could land alongside each other, although there's no other hint that back up the notion of smartphone twins.

Google fans already rocking Android Wear will get an update this week that enables interactive watch faces. You can tap them to show more information or launch an app. The three watch faces released today include "Bits", which keeps the time display in the center, with circles around it displaying different things, like unread emails, upcoming meetings and the weather. The "Under Armour" face, meanwhile, adds fitness stats, allowing you to tap to see your step count, calories burned or distance. Lastly, the "Together" face turns the entire watch face into a display to share doodles, emoji, activities or photos with a loved one (yep, kind of like on the Apple Watch, it sounds like). Additionally, Google Translate is now accessible via a few swipes. You can download the Bits orUnder Armour faces from the Play store now, or follow these instructions to install Together.

If you never use Google Play Games, Google Play Books, Google+ or Google Newsstand, than good news: none of them will be installed on your next Android phone. The suite of apps used to be mandatory for any manufacturer that wanted to sell a device with essential apps like Google Play and Gmail, but new partner guidelines have taken them off of the required pre-install list. Put simply, this means there will be just a little more free space on the next Android smartphone you buy. And if you do use those apps? They're still available -- you'll just have to download them from the Google Play store to use them.

Did you buy an iPhone 6 Plus sometime between last September and this January? Do you notice that your shots taken with its back camera come out all blurry? Yeah, it's not just you. Turns out, a limited number of these phones shipped with a manufacturing defect. However, Apple is aware of the issue and has already begun issuing replacements for the iSight camera. If you think that you have one of these borked units, go to this website and type in your phone's serial number. If your unit is part of that bad batch, Apple will replace the camera (not the entire phone) at no charge. Also, if you're rocking one of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6's, don't worry; none of those units suffered from the defect.

Smartphones with more than 128GB of storage are still extremely rare, but they just became a little more accessible... if you live in Brazil, at least. ASUS hasunveiled a Delxue Special Edition of the Zenfone 2 that includes a cavernous 256GB of storage. You won't be hunting for a microSD card any time soon if you pick this up, folks. You'll also have the choice of carbon fiber- or crystal-like backs instead of the more pedestrian shells of the usual Zenfone 2. This special run arrives in Brazil this September. There's no mention of it reaching other countries, but here's hoping that it does -- cloud storage and streaming media will only go so far when you want lots of apps and videos at your fingertips.

Know how a lot of people tend to use passwords such as "123456" or, well, "password?" Well, turns out Android lock patterns (ALPs) are just as predictable. Norwegian University of Science and Technology graduate Marte Lřge analyzed 4,000 patterns for her master's thesis and found that 77 percent of the participants started from one of the four corners, and 44 percent started their patterns from the top left one. Lřge presented her findings at the PasswordsCon conference in Las Vegas, where she told Ars Technica that "We're seeing the same aspects used when creating pattern locks [as are used in] pin codes and alphanumeric passwords."

Following a leak last month, Microsoft's virtual assistant officially arrived on Android. Thanks to a public beta, Redmond keeps its promise to bring Cortana to the Google faithful. As we've already seen, you can use Cortana to help with things like answering random questions, setting reminders, tracking flights and a number of other tasks. What you still can't do, however, is use the "Hey Cortana" voice command to alert the virtual assistant to your needs. That remains a Windows-only feature for now, though Microsoft says it'll be "continually improving the experience." Perhaps that tool will arrive later, but for now, head to Google Play to nab the software in its current form.

An Android-powered slider may not be the only phone BlackBerry has pegged for Google's mobile OS. Following the leaks of a device codenamed "Venice"that's said to be offered in both Android and BB10 versions, a video of the recently announced Passport Silver Edition surfaced. The square QWERTY handset isn't running BlackBerry's software, though, it's sportin' Lollipop. In the video from Dudu Rocha Tec., a prototype version of the new Passport is equipped with what appears to be stock Android. It'll be interesting to see if this phone also packs in some of BB10's notable features like Venice is rumored to do. BlackBerry hasn't tipped its hand on Android devices just yet, so we'll have to wait and see if another model of the silver Passport will be the second model that'll tempt those who prefer Google's mobile software. BlackBerry is already working with Mountain View on a more secure enterprise version of Android, and a number of reports indicate that the company is planning it's own Lollipop (or Marshmellow) phones in the near future.

Microsoft vowed earlier this year that Lumia Camera would become the default camera app on all Windows 10 phones, but you won't have to wait for theWindows 10 Mobile upgrade to give it a shot. The company has released a version of Lumia Camera that should run on any Windows Phone 8.1 device, not just those with Microsoft or Nokia badges. However, there's a big gotcha. As Windows Central warns, you won't get Rich Capture features like high dynamic range -- unfortunately, those are still the domain of recent Lumia handsets. You may see crashing, too, which hints that this wasn't quite ready for prime time. Even so, you're getting Windows Phone's best-known photography app on your device of choice. It could be worth putting up with a few bugs to get early access.

BlackBerry's repeatedly leaked Venice slider may look like it's running stock Android on the surface, but new leaks suggest that there's a lot more going on underneath. Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) has posted both animations and file listshinting that there could be a load of features borrowed from BlackBerry 10 and the BlackBerry Experience Suite. The centerpiece would be BlackBerry Hub that merges all your conversations, but you'd also get unified calendars and contacts, custom apps for basic features (such as notes and tasks) and BlackBerry mainstays like BBM. In essence, Venice shouldn't just be an AOSPdevice with a few nods toward BlackBerry's roots -- it'd be a showcase for everything the company can do, and proof that much of the modern BlackBerry experience isn't dependent on an in-house platform. While there's a good chance that some of these features could change or disappear by launch, it won't be shocking if they're the big highlights for Venice whenever it arrives.

If you purchased your beloved iPhone 6 Plus handset between September 2014 and January 2015, you may have to swap your smartphone.
According to Apple, a batch of iPhone 6 Plus smartphones are taking blurry photos and need replacing.
The issue is with the iSight camera on the back of the device, and does not affect the front-facing camera – so users can still take their 'selfies' without any problems.
Apple has said that it will replace the camera for free, and that those who are affected by the issue should go to any apple store or contact technical support to swap their device.
Apple said in a statement: “Apple has determined that, in a small percentage of iPhone 6 Plus devices, the iSight camera has a component that may fail causing your photos to look blurry. The affected units fall into a limited serial number range and were sold primarily between September 2014 and January 2015.
“If your iPhone 6 Plus is producing blurry photos and falls into the eligible serial number range, Apple will replace your device's iSight camera, free of charge.”
Users can check if their phone is eligible for a swap by sending in their serial number to Apple.
This isn’t the first time Apple has had some trouble with the iPhone 6 model though, as users previously complained that the Plus could bend when placed in a pocket.
This news comes after Apple revealed that is has hired 65 per cent more women in the past 12 months, in a bid to make its company more diverse.
Apple boss Tim Cook said: “We promised to improve those numbers and we’re happy to report that we have made progress. In the past year we hired over 11,000 women globally, which is 65 per cent more than in the previous year.”

Is it a design flaw or user error? There's a new hullabaloo over the stylus on Samsung's brand new Galaxy Note 5, as first noticed by an Android Centralforum user. Up until now, every previous Note model was designed so that the stylus couldn't be inserted blunt-end first. However, the Note 5's pen goes in either way, and doing it wrong could have dire consequences. The original poster, "FrogVomit," said that "there was no forcing whatsoever" when he accidentally inserted the pen blunt-end first, though he had to pull hard to get it back out. The result? The pen removal detection broke permanently.

There was a time when, if you'd told me I could buy a connected MP3 player with a camera that makes calls, for $37, I'd have suggested a little less "jazz" in your cigarettes. Today, in 2015, that's called the Nokia 222. Of course, this isn't really a media player, it's a feature phone aimed at developing markets. Despite the obvious limitations of a "2.5G" candybar running a bespoke OS (Nokia Series 30+), there are some features -- like month-long battery life -- that remind us that fancy-pants flagships can have their drawbacks.

It's that time of year again. Apple's next iPhone event will take place on September 9th at 10AM PT, live at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. This is expected to be the unveiling of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, which are reported to have animated wallpapers, 4K video capabilities, upgraded 12-megapixel cameras and front-facing flash, among other new features. We may even see something about force-touch iPhones. The event invite is light on details, as usual, but features the tease, "Hey Siri, give us a hint." So, of course, we asked Siri and have posted its responses below.

Yet another feature that's been on Android for years might be finally making its way to the iPhone: animated wallpapers! Specifically, Apple is reportedly planning to bring over the elegant "Motion" Apple Watch faces to the iPhone 6S, according to 9to5Mac. So far, those Apple Watch screens include things like swimming jellyfish, blooming flowers and fluttering butterflies that pop up when you check the time. For the iPhone 6S, sources say Apple is working on animated screens featuring koi fish swimming around a pond and moving smoke. The big difference between Apple's approach and what we've seen on Android so far: It sounds like it's focusing on just animating lock screens. That should add for a cool effect when you wake up your phone, but without eating up battery life like a moving wallpaper on your home screen.

If you've been wanting to see the two high-end Windows phones Microsoft has been developing, then you don't have to wait until the official launch. Evleaks has posted the renders for both devices on Twitter: the larger, cyan one with a 5.7-inch screen is known as codename Cityman, while the black phone with a 5.2-inch screen is Talkman. They're expected to have Quad HD displays, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and 5-megapixel front shooters. Cityman might be powered by an eight-core ship, while its smaller sibling might be equipped with a six-core processor.

Japanese mobile game company DeNA has launched an app called Mirrativ that lets you livestream anything and everything that's happening on your phone. Think of the app as a mix of Periscope and Twitch -- yes, there are plenty of ways to stream your face and your games to the world, but with Mirrativ you're not limited to just either-or. DeNA is also targeting a broader range of uses than just gaming. What else might you like to stream? Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, DeNA's Junichi Akagawa says that users could perhaps browse online stores while seeking "shopping advice" from followers, or read news articles and share their thoughts on the topics.

Google has transformed Android search for apps and now displays the results in a pictorial, grid-like fashion. For instance, searching for "music apps" (either in Now or a browser) brings up the above grid, and clicking on a given app will take you straight to Google Play, as you'd expect. The feature, spotted byAndroid Police, appears to have rolled out over the last few days. Regular search results are still displayed below, but the grid images take up the entire first page, in much the same way as Google's Knowledge Graph. It only works on Android, so far -- doing a similar search on iOS yields a regular app list with the option to install.
