Researchers at Intel are reportedly working on a 48-core processor for smartphones and tablets.
However, according to Computer World, it could be as much as five to ten years before these devices are seen in the market.
“I think the desire to move to more natural interfaces to make the interaction much more human-like is really going to drive the computational requirements," Intel’s CTO, Justin Rattner, told Computer World.
"Having large numbers of cores to generate very high performance levels is the most energy efficient way to deliver those performance levels.”
The chip vendor usually works on five to ten years plans, indicating that these chips are a very recent idea and perhaps are reflective of Intel’s state of readiness for the eruption of interest in the tablet category.

Samsung’s compact version of its flagship smartphone will be available in the UK from November 8th.
Available to buy across all major networks, key retailers and etailers, the Galaxy S3 Mini runs on Google’s latest operating system, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Simon Stanford, Vice President, Telecommunications & Networks, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “Our latest addition to the Galaxy portfolio, the Galaxy S III Mini brings the high performance, intuitive ease-of-use and nature-inspired design of the Galaxy S III in a new elegant yet compact form.
“Following the massive success and popularity of the Galaxy S III and all its features, we are confident customers will enjoy the Galaxy SIII Mini when it hits the shelves on the 8th November.”
Although named the ‘Mini’, this handset still offers an impressive 4-inch AMOLED screen and a 5MP camera.
Samsung's JK Shin unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini earlier this month at an event in Germany, where he explained that there has been 'a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen in Europe'.

In a post-Windows 8 launch interview, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has referred to Apple as a "low-volume player, except in tablets."
The comments followed Ballmer's discussion of the Windows business model following the launch of both the firm's Surface tablet device, and its new operating system Windows 8, which has already amassed four million upgrades worldwide.
He continued to state that he does not believe the firm is attempting to mimic Apple.
There is a great deal of truth to the comments made by the CEO, as Apple's share of the PC market sat at just 13.6 per cent as detailed within third-quarter results.
"In the PC market, obviously the advantage of diversity has mattered since 90-something percent of PCs that get sold are Windows PCs," said Ballmer in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Likewise, Apple certainly isn't a low-volume player within the tablet market as recent figures highlight the firm has sold over 100 million of its iPad devices since its launch just two and a half years ago.
Analysts believe this dominance is only set to increase with the upcoming release of the iPad Mini, forecasting that Apple will sell close to 101.6 million iPads in 2013.
Interestingly, Ballmer fails to mention smartphones within his comments, which would give the impression that Microsoft leads Apple in this category too.
Figures would strongly indicate otherwise.
Google's Android OS clears both firms with easy, taking the smartphone market title by holding a 52.2 per cent market share.
Apple sits at 33.4 per cent according to recent iPhone 5 pre-order numbers, whilst Microsoft has just a 3.6 per cent hold on the space, a number the firm will be hoping to increase with HTC's Windows Phone 8X.

Bit9 study shows 72 per cent of users use at least one high-risk permission app.
More than 100,000 Android apps pose a significant security risk to mobile users and the enterprise networks to which they connect, a Bit9 research report has shown.
The research project analysed the security permissions of over 400,000 Android applications. And with more smartphones today running Android than any other operating system, the study was based specifically on Google Play applications.
An application could be defined as suspicious according to the permissions requested by the app, its categorisation, user rating, number of downloads, and the reputation of the application’s publisher. Subsequently, Bit9 found that of the 400,000 mobiles in question, 72 per cent use at least one high-risk permission.
Furthermore, the study also shows that 42 per cent of applications access GPS location data, and these include wallpapers, games and utilities, with 31 per cent accessing phone calls or phone numbers.
It is also reported that 26 per cent access personal data, such as contacts and email, while nine per cent use permissions that can cost the user money.
Harry Sverdlove, chief technology officer for Bit9, commented on the findings: “A significant percentage of Google Play apps have access to potentially sensitive and confidential information. When a seemingly basic app such as a wallpaper requests access to GPS data, this raises a red flag. Likewise, more than a quarter of the apps can access email and contacts unbeknown to the phone user, which is of great concern when these devices are used in the workplace.”
Meanwhile, the results of a nine-month study by AdaptiveMobile recently revealed that Android battery apps are among the highest source of mobile malware in the UK.

"iTunes has been criticized in the past for being slow and growing increasingly unwieldy as more and more media types have been added to what used to be simply a music player. Apple announced iTunes 11, the latest version of the program, at its iPhone 5 event in September and said the update would be released by the end of October, but Apple's deadline for the upgrade has slipped. 'The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right,' Apple told technology site AllThingsD. 'We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November.' The update is said to be the most significant upgrade to iTunes in the 11-year life of the program, which has grown from a simple music player to the most powerful retailer in the music business — and a force in the movie, television and e-books businesses — and, on Apple's PCs, the portal to its app store."

The UK court of appeal has lambasted Apple for its Samsung lawsuit acknowledgement posted last week.
The iPhone creators will have to alter the working of the statement, which it ruled to be non-compliant, and post it on the homepage – not hide it behind a link, The Guardian reports.
Apple has been ordered to change the wording within 48 hours. It must be published in at least 11-point font. Apple had asked for 14 days in which to make the change, but the judge ruled that “he could not believe” the process would take that long.
The main objections seemed to be that the post was too long, containing an additional four paragraphs about other court cases that it had won against Samsung. This, the judge felt, was "a plain breach of the order".
The company was also told off for not posting the adverts containing the statement as instructed.
The judge ruling, made earlier this month, arrived after it was ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy tablet range does not infringe on Apple iPad patents, despites Apple’s court allegations.
Apple has in a lawsuit claimed that the Galaxy line “blatantly imitates the appearance of Apple’s products to capitalize on Apple’s success”.

The Kickstarted Ouya console has stepped closer to reality with an OS upgrade and its first printed circuit boards. The Ouya team gave two updates of the console's progress towards release.
"Our CAD models and SLAs (plastic prototypes that provide us with a physical look and feel of the product) are finished, and we moved out of the design phase and into development a couple of weeks ago," wrote Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman in the first update.
The first real version of the Ouya console.
"Last week was a huge milestone for us - we received our first development run of PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) for the console. We're set to complete this EVT phase on time, and we're in sync with our December target for developer kits. Since these dev kits are still in pre-production phase, we'll build a limited quantity. Each one will be a collector's item - unique in design, build and appearance."
Ouya will now be using the new version of Android, Jelly Bean (4.2).The second update also outlined the system's use of 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, with widescreen aspect ratios. Games on the Ouya will be full screen, with no navigation bar. The system's controller will include standard gamepad buttons, a touchpad, a system button for pausing and system settings, and "no back, menu, or volume buttons".
Uhrman also revealed that any developers who missed out on the Kickstarter drive can still get in on the developer kit action.
"If you missed the Kickstarter drive, but you're still interested in an early version of the console that you can use as a Dev Kit, you're in luck. We're making a few extra. Please visit www.ouya.tv in the near future and order one (we'll let you know when it's available). Of course, they won't carry the same rewards as the Kickstarter Dev Kits, but you will receive a console, two controllers and early access to test your game on OUYA! These units will start shipping in the new year," she wrote.

What kind of movement does a theft entail? Apple's in the process of figuring that out, today filing a patent application for a, "acceleration-based theft detection system for portable electronic devices." Apple pickers: you've just been put on watch. According to the patent filing, said device would activate an alarm of some form after determining, "whether a theft condition is present." It'll apparently figure that out based on the accelerometer built into many of Apple's mobile devices -- the same thing that figures out which way you're holding your phone. Beyond just the hardware, said theft protection system would work in concert with software to determine if the movement matches a pre-determined "profile characteristic of theft."
Of course, Apple's not the only one worried about mobile device theft, as Google already patented just such a device pertaining to its Project Glass concept. But the you'd have to be pretty brazen to steal the glasses off of someone's face without "accidentally" socking them in the eye.

That was quick -- not long after launch details of the LG Mach were caught lurking in Sprint's catalog, the carrier has confirmed them. Fans of the Korean firm's aesthetic who also like their QWERTY keyboards can buy the mid-range smartphone for $100 on November 11th, the same day its bigger Optimus Gcousin reaches stores. Just be sure to avoid the Sprint website during the wait for the newly dated device; Optimus G pre-orders have started at the source link, and a click on LG's flagship could be mighty tempting.

Been waiting for Apple to refresh its mobile operating system? Well, the wait is over, as Cupertino has just released iOS 6.0.1 with the promise of improvements and bug fixes. We just grabbed the update ourselves, and among the highlights are: a fix for the iPhone 5's inability to receive OTA software updates, problems with the phone and the 5th-gen iPod Touch connecting to WPA2 encrypted WiFi networks, and other cellular connectivity issues as well. There's also fixes for a passcode lock bug, a graphical keyboard glitch and a bug that prevented the 5's camera flash from firing. Sound good? Go grab the download and let us know how it's treating you in the comments below.
Update: Thanks to our friends at TUAW, we should point out that iPhone 5 owners will need to download an updater app before they can grab 6.0.1.

Electronic Arts has released an update for the iOS version of Battlelog. The new update adds "initial support" for Medal of Honor: Warfighter, as well as support for the iPhone 5 according to the Battlelog Twitter account. The iTunes listing for Battlelog also notes that the update packs in support for iOS 6 (though strangely doesn't mention the Warfighter support).
Finally, Battlelog can put that extra screen real estate to use, giving you more space than ever for your friends' aggressive victory messages and lewd emoticons.

The US firm has released the latest update to its under-fire mobile operating system iOS6.Users have been waiting for an update to the OS ever since its release, which has been heavily criticised by users for its removal of a number of fan-favourite features such as the built-in YouTube app.iOS6 also staged the introduction of Apple's own mapping service, which too drew anguish from Apple fans as the app was found to be riddled with bugs and often had trouble locating users accurately.Apple's own mapping service was introduced in order to replace the previously used Google Maps, another app favoured by Apple and iOS users.iOS6.0.1 provides very few new features and tweaks for users. In fact, the most noticeable change for users adopting the new update is the addition of a large button to Apple's mapping service, which users can use to report the various bugs and issues they encounter whilst using the service.http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/...-update/029524

A pair of reports by Juniper and Bit9 confirm the suspicion that many apps are spying on users. '26 percent of Android apps in Google Play can access personal data, such as contacts and email, and 42 percent, GPS location data... 31 percent of the apps access phone calls or phone numbers, and 9 percent employ permissions that could cost the user money, such as incurring premium SMS text message charges... nearly 7 percent of free apps can access address books, 2.6 percent, can send text messages without the user knowing, 6.4 percent can make calls, and 5.5 percent have access to the device's camera.' The main issue seems to be with poor development practices. Only in a minority of cases is there malicious intent. The Juniper report and the Bit9 report are both available online.

Microsoft may be developing its own smartphone model free from its current partnerships with cellular providers.
Wall Street Journal sources claiming to be Microsoft parts suppliers state that the firm is working with Chinese and Korean component manufacturers to finalize the new hardware's design.
The sources add that Microsoft is strongly considering a 5-inch screen — larger than current smartphone leaders iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy SIII. That said, the report states the company isn’t sure if the product will ever go into mass production.
Microsoft currently produces its smartphones in partnership with Nokia and HTC.

It's well established that the A6X chip in the fourth-generation iPad is about twice as fast as its predecessor in pure number crunching, but how about those reportedly doubled graphics amid some increasingly fierce competition? Thanks to some help from Kishonti, AnandTech has learned that Apple may still have an ace up its sleeve. The new tablet carries a new, quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4 with twice the raw potential as the already quick 543MP4 graphics in the A5X. While that doesn't always lead to a literal doubling of 3D performance, it unambiguously puts the new new iPad on top in GLBenchmark, with even the imminent Nexus 10's new Mali-T604 video left in the middle of a large pack. We're somewhat surprised when the Samsung-made Nexus is using a brand new chip architecture that many had thought would represent a fundamental leap in speed. Visuals aren't the only factors in buying tablets, so take the results with the appropriate grains of salt; if gaming or sheer responsiveness matters most, however, there's now a clear frontrunner.

The art of smishing (SMS-Phishing) has been practiced for some time, but a discovery by the wizards atNC State University has uncovered a new vulnerability that could bring the aforesaid act back into the spotlight. Xuxian Jiang's research team recently identified the hole and confirmed that it impacts Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. Put simply, if an Android user downloads an infected app, the attacking program can "make it appear that the user has received an SMS, or text, message from someone on the phone's contact list or from trusted banks." This fake message can solicit personal information, such as passwords for user accounts. The team isn't going to disclose proof until Google patches it up, but the school has said that Google will be addressing it "in a future Android release." For now, however, Jiang recommends additional caution when downloading and installing apps from unknown sources, while also suggesting that folks pay close attention to received SMS text messages.

Sideloading apps on Android implies a whole set of security holes, but the new malware scanner included in Android 4.2 could provide a much-needed plug. Talking to Computerworld, Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer revealed that Google's been analyzing APKs that crop up online, regardless of whether they're official market apps or not, in order to maintain a growing database of good and bad code. The scanner -- shown above -- then works in a similar way to the Bouncer on the front gate, comparing all the apps on your phone to that database. The new sentry helps Google build upon other Android 4.2 security features such as an improved app permission screen and a block against apps sending premium SMS messages in the background. On the other hand, some might say that collecting samples of existing malware will never be as powerful as truly understanding its DNA.

Apple has launched the latest addition to its range of tablet devices, the iPad Mini.
The new device hit UK shelves this morning as early adopters of the device queued early ahead of the Mini's 8am release.
It's expected to prove popular amongst consumers who have long been fans of the iPad but have held out until now for a smaller device that fits their needs, much like the Google Nexus or Kindle Fire.
The iPad Mini measures in at just 7.9-inches and offers specifications similar to that of Apple's previous iPad 2 with a screen resolution of 1024x768, whilst being powered by a A5 processor and coming complete with LTE technology, which will allow the new device to be used on EE's recently launched 4G network.
However, the number of those in attendance at the new device's launch pales in comparison to the crowds that camped out for a week ahead of the firm's iPhone 5.
Apple has come under fire for its new iPad device, with many highlighting its costly price tag when compared to similar devices on the market, along with the firm's decision to release the new product so soon after it launched its previous, third-generation iPad and new iPhone.
It's likely that these factors, matched with the prospect of queuing on a particularly cold November morning put a number of potential customers off, who may prefer to get their hands on the device in less-demanding fashion. Pre-ordering online, maybe?

By using the same technology found in older modems, Thomas Tumino, vice president of the Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club, has invented an iPhone interface for ham radios. He told The Epoch Times, 'Today there are iPhone apps where you can use the systems in the phone — and its sound card, which is being used as a modem ... And then you connect that into your radio with an interface like this, that just isolates the telephone from the radio, and then you can do all sorts of things

According to a (paywalled) report in the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is experimenting with its own smartphone design. "Officials at some of Microsoft's parts suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Redmond, Wash.-based company is testing a smartphone design but isn't sure if a product will go into mass production." The article continues:"If Microsoft pushes ahead with its mobile phone, it would underscore how far Microsoft has moved away from its long-standing practice of making software and leaving decisions about design, features and marketing of the computing hardware to partners such as Hewlett-Packard or Samsung Electronics. ... As it does so, Microsoft pulls from a modified playbook of Apple—whose hardware-plus-software approach Microsoft officials long have scorned. ... Smartphones running Microsoft's two-year-old Windows Phone operating software for cellphones haven't sold well, and Microsoft may want to leave itself an option to test whether its own phone would spur sales."

We've delved into just what we think of Windows Phone 8's interface, but not what led Microsoft to the final layout. The company isn't content to let us wonder -- a pair of new company blog posts explain some (though not all) of what was involved in that birthing process. Ignore the marketing spin and you'll learn that the wider, more densely packed home screen was chosen as much for balance as to stuff in more home tiles, and that it caused a momentary crisis for the app list as a result. The Redmond team goes on to justify choices behind the lock screen, such as why notifications are as customizable as they are, why the music controls fade and why there's a failsafe for PIN attempts. Don't expect to come out of the explanations suddenly craving a Lumia 920; just expect to make more sense of the OS inside.

According to a survey by API company Apigee, 96 per cent of American app users have been rendered sufficiently enraged by their apps as to take to the web and post a strong-worded negative review.
Among the major issues forcing people to submit their bad reviews were freezing (76 per cent of survey participants), crashes (71 per cent), slow responsiveness (59 per cent), heavy battery usage (55 per cent) and too many ads (53 per cent).
Meanwhile, 98 per cent of respondents insisted that performance matters, with 63 per cent stating that this was most critical in banking and mapping apps.
When an app fails to meet expectations, 99 per cent said that they would take some form of action. 44 per cent said they would delete an app immediately, while 38 per cent said they would delete an app if it froze for longer than 30 seconds, with 18 per cent saying they would do the same if it froze for five seconds. However, 27 per cent claimed they would keep an app longer if they had paid for it.
Word of mouth also appears to be a key method for disgruntled app consumers to voice their concerns, with 32 per cent of users saying they would tell their friends about the underperforming application, while 21 per cent would complain about the app on Facebook or Twitter.
Additionally, the most popular response (89 per cent) to an app issue is for app companies to fix the problem.
Other favoured responses included easy refunds (65 per cent), the provision of a customer service number (49 per cent) or a personal response (46 per cent), while 21 per cent believed that a public apology would be an appropriate response.

October was a busy month for the tablet space, with Apple revealing an iPad 4 and iPad mini, while Samsung and Google announced the Nexus 10.
Since the Apple unveilings, phone recycling site SellMyMobile.comhas reported a 500 per cent and 312.5 per cent spike of iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook trade-ins, respectively.
The iOS tablet now accounts for 76.1 per cent of tablet swaps, followed by the Playbook at 9.9 per cent and Samsung Galaxy Tab at 7.3 per cent.
The iPad 3 64GB (wi-fi and 4G) model is the most valuable device at Ł380, which ism't surprising considering it was only released seven months ago. Indeed, the fact more iPads have arrived in such a short space of time has peeved a lot of existing owners.
Other devices that hold their value well include:
* iPad 2 64GB (WiFi + 3G) at Ł259
* Samsung Galaxy Note at Ł190
* Samsung Galaxy Tab at Ł160
* Motorola Xoom 2 at Ł139
Meanwhile, the iPad Mini also had an impact on the phone space, with the prices of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S dropping by 30 and 15 per cent, respectively.
Colin White, MD of SellMyMobile.com, said: "Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of people looking to recycle their old mobiles – particularly when a new handset is released. But whereas before people would hang on to their tablets longer, high profile launches like the Apple iPad, Google Nexus 10 and Microsoft Surface mean that we’re now seeing this trend move to the tablet industry.
"We’ve become a nation of gadget lovers, and technology hungry Brits can’t even wait for Christmas to get their hands on the new devices – meaning they are trading up and recycling old tablets in favour of newer, flashier models."

A Microsoft branded smartphone could well be in the pipeline, after a report in the Wall Street Journal suggested that the company is currently testing a new handset design with component suppliers in Asia.
While Microsoft has thus far declined to comment on the rumours, a source cited in the report stated that the smartphone has a screen size of four inches, which is in the same range as top smartphones from Apple, Samsung, HTC and Motorola.
However, according to the report, officials at component suppliers did indicate that the Microsoft smartphone may not go into mass production.
Should Microsoft introduce a smartphone for commercial production, the company would move closer to the Apple business model, designing both the software and hardware for each of its marquee devices.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S III in May and must be grinning from ear to ear with the sales it's experiencing.
The 4.8-inch device has now crossed 30m sales in five months (157 days), rising from 20m in 100 days, and 10m in under two months.
Comparatively, the Galaxy S II sold just ten million units in 150 days.
JK Shin, president and head of IT & mobile communications division at Samsung, said: "The Galaxy S III continues to be a runaway favourite with customers around the world. Meeting this sales milestone in five months sets another record for Samsung, and we are extremely proud and yet motivated to continue to provide our customers with products that they love.
"On behalf of Samsung Mobile, I appreciate millions of customers around the world that have chosen the Samsung GALAXY S III."

An altered version of Apple’s Samsung lawsuit acknowledgement has been published on the company’s website.
On October 18th Apple was ordered by the UK courts to publish an acknowledgement of the court’s ruling that Samsung was not guilty of the patent breaches Apple had accused it of.
A statement was published on October 26th but just days later the courts were back on Apple’s case again, demanding amendmentsto its statement that it described as “a plain breach” of its order.
Apple’s fresh statement is now live and reads:
On 9 July 2012 the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited's Galaxy Tablet Computers, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple's Community registered design No. 0000181607–0001. A copy of the full judgment of the High Court is available [here]
That Judgment has effect throughout the European Union and was upheld by the Court of Appeal of England and Wales on 18 October 2012. A copy of the Court of Appeal's judgment is available [here]. There is no injunction in respect of the Community registered design in force anywhere in Europe.
However, PocketGamer reports that Reddit users have discovered a cheeky bit of code that has been added toApple's homepage. This effectively ensures that the link to the disclaimer is by default hidden beyond the fold at the bottom of the screen, regardless of a user’s screen resolution.
This way Apple complies with the court’s demands but still hides the text.

Publisher Square Enix has dismissed the notion that free-to-play is the only business model for mobile.
The firm says it has had success with its premium-priced iOS titles, including episodic title Final Fantasy Dimensions, which costs in total Ł19.99.
“It’s actually done a lot more revenue than a lot of free-to-play with in-app purchases or advertising models,” said Square Enix’s mobile general manager Antony Douglas.
“You’ve got to sell 12 times that in some cases to get to one game on that Ł14.99/Ł20 model.
“Customer behaviour is changing all the time so it’s one of many business models that we have and we have all the others under scrutiny as well.
“What I will say about the business model is that it’s not fixed. Everyone says free-to-play is the future and that’s absolutely part of it, but that will change.
“If you’re playing a lengthy Ł20 RPG title, there will be an audience for that. Some people won’t go for it but those people could spend Ł30 on resource management games. We’re looking into it to see how people respond.
“We can’t show too much in the way of figures but it hasn’t had the negative sales response that some people would think.”

Apple may have just learned a lesson about all-or-nothing gambles. Judge Crabb has dismissed the company's lawsuit against Motorola over fair royalties for standards-based patents after the firm said it would only accept court-dictated payouts to Motorola of less than $1 per iPhone. To say that Crabb isn't eager to be used as leverage for a discount is an understatement -- she flipped from leaning towards a trial just days earlier to preventing Apple from suing over the same dispute unless it wins an appeal. The decision doesn't represent the first time the Cupertino team has had a lawsuit tossed this year, although it comes as Motorola has faced its own share of legal setbacks; the two parties are still very much in a stalemate. All we know for certain is that any royalty decision will have to come through either a (currently unlikely) settlement or through a separate trial.

If you like your tablets of the Samsung persuasion, AT&T has just promised an abundance of riches. The carrier has confirmed that both the Android-toting Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and the Windows 8-based ATIV Smart PC will reach its stores and LTE network by November 9th at respective contract-free prices of $500 and $800. Those who spring for the ATIV-badged hardware can deck it out with a $49 Stand Dock and a $40 VGA adapter, both available in late November, if they're keen to transform their 11.6-inch slates into tiny desktops. And if you'd really, really like to go all-in with Samsung, there's a promo running through the holidays that knocks as much as $100 off the tablet price if you're willing to buy a Samsung phone (and the matching two-year contract, naturally) at the same time.

Following its launch event in San Francisco and the appearance of its first devices last week, the folks behind Windows Phone 8 is hoping for big things in the future. Microsoft's chief exec Steve Ballmer said that its work with Nokia, HTC and Samsung offered them the chance to create a "really strong third participant in the smartphone market." He admitted that they weren't there quite yet and told the audience at a Windows 8 launch event in Israel that Microsoft's mobile OS was "still relatively small", but that he expects "the volumes on Windows Phone to really ramp quickly." The company will be lavishing more on marketing and advertising around Windows 8, Window Phone 8 and Surface than it has on anything previous -- which sounds good, as its new mobile OS might need the help.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 retained a lot of the specs from its predecessor, with the company slashing the price to duck out of a straight fight with the iPad. In doing so, however, it found itself being bested by mid-range units from ASUS, Acer, and most damningly, the OG Galaxy Tab. Of course, if you've spent the last six months with this slate as your daily driver, then you might have found some other things to love and loathe about it. Let's imagine Samsung is listening, and tell them what you'd like to see in next year's version (aside from, perhaps, just buying a Nexus 10).http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/04/h...xy-tab-2-10.1/

Double whammy attack by the wi-fi versions of iPad 4 and iPad mini.
The wi-fi only versions of the iPad 4 and iPad mini hit stores on Friday (November 2nd), and Apple says the devices have already notched up three million sales between them.
Comparatively, the figure doubles the 1.5m wi-fi only iPad 3 units sold over three days back in March.
Tim Cook, CEO, said: "Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad.
"We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We're working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand."
Demand for iPad mini exceeded initial supply and some pre-order customers will have to wait until later this month to receive their shiny 7.9-inch tablets.

Rumors have circulated for weeks that Microsoft intends to release a smartphone of its own design and manufacture, embracing the strategy that drove Apple's iPhone to such enormous success over the past few years. While releasing a branded smartphone offers several potential benefits—look at the revenue and brand recognition Apple's earned as a result of the iPhone—such a strategy also carries significant risks for Microsoft. First, it could alienate smartphone partners such as Nokia, which would find itself competing against a high-end device backed by Microsoft's sizable marketing dollars. (Given the Finnish phone-maker's already perilous situation, that could prove ruinous.) But a branded smartphone could also convince hardware manufacturers that Microsoft really is 'all in' on building its own devices, which could lead to all sorts of drama."

The latest Kaspersky Lab research shows that Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread was the most popular target for cybercriminals in Q3, closely followed by the latest version Ice Cream Sandwich.
The rapid growth in the number of new mobile malicious programs for Android continued in the third quarter, prompting Kaspersky Lab to identify the platform versions most frequently targeted by cybercriminals.
Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread accounted for 28 per cent of all blocked attempts to install malware, while the second most commonly attacked version was the new 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, which accounted for 22 per cent of attempts.
“Although Gingerbread was released back in September 2011, due to the segmentation of the Android device market it still remains one of the most popular versions, which, in turn, attracts increased interest from cybercriminals,” commented Yuri Namestnikov, senior malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
“The popularity of the most recent version of the Android OS – Ice Cream Sandwich – among virus writers can be explained by the fact that the devices running the latest versions of the OS are more suitable for online activities. Unfortunately, users actively surfing the web often end up on malicious sites.”

Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google and eBay generate most downloads in the US.
An Interbrand 2012 Best Global Brands report has found that the vast majority of the world’s top 100 global brands have at least one application in the Apple App Store.
Only 12 of the top 100 brands are yet to introduce an app to the store; a figure that has dropped since September 2011, when a total of 18 brands lacked a presence in the Apple App Store.
The Interbrand report, which was published by Distimo, found Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google and eBay to be the most successful of the top 100 brands to feature in the store, having generated the most downloads in the US Apple App Store in September 2012. Unsurprisingly, the most successful of these five brands were Apple and Google.
Despite only being released for the iPhone on September 11th 2012, Google’s YouTube app is the most downloaded application from the app store in the US, while the IKEA Catalogue is the most downloaded promotion-only app.
Of the top 100 global brands, Sony had the most available apps in the Apple App Store with 141, followed closely by Disney with 139. Samsung had the third largest number of available apps with 117, while MTV and SAP each have 72 available.

With a production cost of $188 per unit and an RRP of $329, the odd cynic among us may well consider the iPad Mini just a tad overpriced.
The estimated figures, which were revealed this week by HIS iSuppli analysts, indicate that Apple stands to make a 43 per cent profit on each tablet sold.
To put that into perspective, iSuppli found that Google’s 8GB Nexus 7 has a build cost of around $151.75 and a retail price of $200, therefore yielding a gross margin of 24 per cent on each sale.
Apple’s iPad Mini came in for further criticism recently, after US comedian and chat show host Conan O’Brien questioned the need for yet another Apple product

Smartphone penetration breaks 50 per cent mark for the first time.
comScore’s MobiLens service has reported that Samsung is the handset manufacturer of choice among US mobile subscribers, taking 26 per cent of the current market share.
Reporting key trends in the US mobile phone industry during a three-month average period, which ended on September 2012, the study surveyed over 30,000 US mobile subscribers, showing Samsung to be the leading handset manufacturer overall with 26 per cent market share.
Meanwhile, the survey also revealed that smartphone penetration has broken the 50 per cent barrier for the very first time, with Android leading that segment of the market with 52.5 per cent of smartphone subscribers, while Apple accounted for 34.3 per cent.
For a full breakdown of the reports findings, please see the figures below.
OEM Market Share
For the three-month average period ending in September, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 26 per cent of US mobile subscribers (up 0.4 percentage points), followed by LG with 17.7 percent share. Apple continued to close in on the #2 OEM ranking with 17.5 per cent of mobile subscribers (up 2.1 percentage points), followed by Motorola with 10.9 per cent and HTC with 6.2 per cent.

For all of the clamour surrounding Siri, critics remain undecided whether the virtual assistant is up to scratch. Either way, Apple's move into voice has been echoed by China Mobile, Google, LG,Samsung, among others.
Now, 9to5Mac reports Siri will get a revamp on the iOS 6.1 update, sporting a new feature allowing users to book film tickets through movie bookings service, Fandango.
Interestingly, the news comes following the appointment ofAmazon's former search and navigation chief as the new head of Siri.
Developers claim the service, currently in beta trials, will be compatible for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Just tell Siri you want to see Breaking Dawn: Part Two and the app will get to work by providing nearby cinema information and show times. The user will then be redirected to the Fandango app to complete the transaction.
Of course, they could always just go straight to the Fandango app and buy a ticket in just a few swipes to bypass Siri altogether.
The feature will only be available to the US, so it seems Apple is still prioritising its American customers, something that was noted at the original launch of Siri when overseas customers couldn't make use of the location-based functionality.
Meanwhile, Fandango recently expanded its mobile ticketing platform on a massive scale to support 300 new cinemas.

"Even though Apple's App Store has also been friendly enough to offer alternative mapping applications to ameliorate customers upset with Apple's new default Maps app, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company may not be so friendly as to approve a Maps app submission from Google, which used to be responsible for the Maps experience in iOS until the iPhone 5. On Monday, sources at Google familiar with its mapping plans said the chances of Apple approving a dedicated Google Maps app on iOS 6 are 'not optimistic.' Specifically, they pointed to the lack of any mapping app in the 'Find maps for your iPhone' section of the App Store — accessible only via iPhones or iPads — that use the Google Maps APIs to call wirelessly for location, routing or point-of-interest (POI) data."

Guitar Hero's time in the spotlight is long since over, but co-creator Charles Huang has his sights set on what he believes will be the next big phenomenon: mobile phones as full living room gaming experiences. With Green Throttle Games, a 12-person startup, Huang is looking to launch a special game controller next year that leverages Android smartphones and tablets. The controller connects wirelessly to your Android device, which can be plugged into an HDTV with a cable.
Green Throttle Games is the latest company, following Ouya and MOGA, to look to Android as a console alternative. “Mobile gaming is exploding, and new smart devices are becoming powerful alternatives to traditional consoles,” Huang toldGamesBeat. “We just need a simple and fun way for people to play games both on the go and on the couch. Our mission is to create great game experiences that bring people together - a big-screen experience where you can just start playing games on a television, as simple as that.”
Huang and company will be offering a software development kit to enable developers to adapt their games to work with the controller. Additionally, Green Throttle Games plans to partner with game companies to make its own first-party games that will allow for two-player action on the same TV screen.
“We want to change the phone into a full console experience so you can enjoy first-person shooter games and racing games,” Huang continued. “You don't need the game console for that. We are reimagining games for the living room.”
Ultimately, Huang sees his controller as something that could disrupt the traditional $60 console game business. “Publishers might have a vested interest in the $60 game, but developers might be able to see what is possible,” said Huang. “The television wars are coming. There is a global set of players.”
There are plenty of people who don't think phones can be used to replace consoles in this way, but Huang doesn't mind the skepticism at all.
“With Guitar Hero, there was a lot of skepticism,” he said. “I feel more comfortable with skepticism. If it were obvious, lots of people would do it. But the trends in the industry are moving this way. It is on an inevitable path. We are doing the next evolution.”

ZTE's marketing chief, Lu Qian Hao, has tweeted out a picture to China's Weibo site of a previously unseen Windows Phone handset, along with a few telling specs: 5.9-inch display, 1920 x 1080 resolution and DTS audio tech. That would put it into flagship territory, and perhaps tempt buyers away from a smartphone and tablet combo in favor of one big daddy phablet like this -- if it ever came to be, of course. Considering the device is sporting a WP7 logo and that WP8 doesn't even support full HD yet, it could just be a ruse on ZTE's part, so don't put that Nexus 7 on eBay just yet.

There is a new tool, Mobile Shader Analyzer, which determines which materials are creating particular shaders, why they are different and includes other useful applications.
In addition to these primary features, there is a Perforce Setup Wizard for setting up a new Perforce server via the UDK installer. Develop can also start projects fro m scratch using bare minimum code and content.

Apple was ordered to pay $368 million today to a software company named VirnetX over patents related to Apple's FaceTime technology. Apple engineers testified they didn't pay attention to any patents when building FaceTime. 'The jury, which had sat through the five-day trial, ruled that Apple infringed two patents: one for a method of creating a virtual private network (VPN) between computers, and another for solving DNS security issues. ... It's not the first time VirnetX has won a payout from a major tech firm: the company bagged $105.7m from Microsoft two years ago, and it may not be the last either. VirnetX has a separate case against Apple pending with the International Trade Commission and it has court cases against Cisco, Avaya and Siemens scheduled for trial next year.'"It's not all bad news for Apple today, though — according to Ars, they've won a new patent for a rounded rectangle (D670,286).

The PlayPad and the PlayPad Pro controllers from Nyko have just reported for Android gaming duties, each carrying a $39.99 sticker. There's no sign of the multicolored options we saw back in June, but the PlayPad does come in black or white and is bundled with a carry case and a folding stand for phones and tablets, while its larger and apparently more ergonomic sibling is offered only in black and is a GameStopexclusive. The wireless duo latch on to Android (3.0 or greater) devices using Bluetooth and are optimized for those with a Tegra processor, such as the Nexus 7 and the HTC One X+. There's an app -- called Playground -- which lets either controller work with legacy titles that don't specifically support its Bluetooth instructions, along with a mouse mode, PC and Mac support, and even the option to play on iOS devices loaded with iCade games. Sure, these controllers may not have faux-recoil or venomous branding, but perhaps they don't need to -- especially since they're cheaper than some of the competition.

Valuation of world's richest company drops by 20 per cent despite impressive sales of iPhone 5 and iPad mini
Apple’s valuation has dropped by Ł80 billion in just two months.
As reported by MCV, the overall valuation of the world’s richest firm has dropped 20 per cent since the iPhone 5 was launched.
On September 21st, the company was worth approximately $660 billion, but this has now dropped to $530bn.
This is despite selling a hugely impressive five million iPhone 5’s in its opening weekend, which also shattered the number of pre-orders made for the iPhone 4S, as well as selling more than three million iPad Mini’s and iPad 4’s in the opening weekend.
It is unclear why shares in the company have fallen so far, although the increased competition from the likes of Google and Samsung are likely to be factors.

The manufacturer behind Apple's flagship device has revealed it is experiencing 'design related difficulties' producing the new iPhone.
As a result, stock of the iPhone has become severely delayed with some customers having to wait up to three weeks before receiving the device.
Foxconn chairman, Terry Gou, addressed the production issues this week, stating: "Market demand is very strong, but we just can't really fulfil Apple's requests."
"It's not easy to make the iPhones. We are falling short of meeting the huge demand," Gou continued.
These are not the first issues surrounding Foxconn's iPhone production to be made public, as delays have also been attributed to quality control issues over design defects and scratches, whilst protests and riots amongst the firm's 1.3 million workers have limited production even further.
However, despite looming supply issues, analysts have predicted that Apple can expect to sell around 46.5 million iPhone 5 devices during Q4 2012 and across the Christmas period.
The iPhone 5 has seen universal success as the new device sold over five million units in just its first weekend, which significantly outperformed both the 4 and 4S devices.
Foxconn recently revealed that it was considering expansion into the USA, eyeing-up cities such as Detroit and Los Angeles as potential manufacturing sites, however, given the complexity of the iPhone 5 production, it's believed that these new plants would only manufacture LCD televisions.

Apple’s iPhone 4S falls behind the S3 for the first time ever.
For the first time ever, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 has overtaken the Apple iPhone 4S to become the world’s biggest selling smartphone in the third quarter of 2012, according to Strategy Analytics.
The figures show that during the third quarter of 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S3 shifted 18 million units, while Apple recorded 16.2 million sales of its iPhone 4S.
Neil Shah, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "Samsung's Galaxy S3 smartphone model shipped 18.0 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2012. The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 per cent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever.
He continued: “A large touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the Galaxy S3's success. Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S units worldwide for second place, as consumers temporarily held off purchases in anticipation of a widely expected iPhone 5 upgrade at the end of the quarter."
Having fallen behind the Samsung Galaxy S3 for the first time ever, the recent findings follow news of iPhone ownership loyalty also dropping for the first time.

iTomb will allow loved ones to swipe away the tears and relive happy memories on an embedded Apple tablet.
We've covered eerie mobile concepts before, what with former App Of The Day: iFuneral acting as something of a digital will that enables users to plan their wake.
Now, The Sun reports that 64-year-old stonemason, Ken Howe, has developed the iTomb.
The tech-riddled gravestone sports an embedded iPad that runs on solar power, enabling loved ones to post photos and other media from the burial site.
What about rain and unsavoury characters? Well, the iTomb comes with a protective cover to fight off bad weather and crooks.
iPads cost up to Ł659, while the stone will set you back Ł900 quid. Of course, buyers could always look to reduce costs by buying a Ł269 iPad mini.
Howe made the iTomb in ten days for a charity and said: "People are asking for more creative headstones. With a bit of tinkering it could become a viable headstone very easily."

Last week, EE publicly flipped the switch on its 4G network. Launching LTE in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and (parts of) Southampton. EE also plans for an additional five cities before the new year. The new phone network, composed of equal parts T-Mobile and Orange, has other plans -- and they start from Ł21 SIM-only (starting November 9th) while phone packages begin at Ł36 per month. For that, the new network offers its customers 500MB of data, plus unlimited calls and texts.
The data plans scale up from there, all the way up to 8GB of monthly data, alongside a system of on-off data bundles. So being an earlier adopter comes at a very specific cost -- are the wonders of a next-generation network worth it? We inserted a fresh EE 4G SIM into an iPhone 5 and now have been using it for over a week, get our full verdict after the break.

We've been following the story that Apple was ordered by a UK court to post an apology to Samsung both in newspapers and on Apple's UK website. After originally posting a non-apology and then hiding a real one, Apple finally complied. Now, PJ over at Groklaw reports on the ruling from the UK court itself, which condemns Apple's conduct in this matter. 'Since Apple did not comply with the order in its estimation, adding materials that were not ordered and in addition were "false," the judges ordered Apple to pay Samsung's lawyers' fees on an indemnity basis, and they add some public humiliation.' The judge wrote, 'Finally I should mention the time for compliance. Mr Beloff, on instructions (presumably given with the authority of Apple) told us that "for technical reasons" Apple needed fourteen days to comply. I found that very disturbing: that it was beyond the technical abilities of Apple to make the minor changes required to own website in less time beggared belief. ... I hope that the lack of integrity involved in this incident is entirely atypical of Apple.'"

"In the mid-00s, more and more people started learning about Android, a Linux-based smartphone OS. Open source advocates in particular thought they could be seeing the mobile equivalent of Linux — something you could download, tinker with, and sell. Today, though, the Android market is dominated by Google and the usual suspects in the handset business. The reason nobody's been able to launch an Android empire from the garage is fairly straightforward: the average smartphone is covered by over 250,000 patents.

It's tough to find truly stellar mobile apps, no matter what platform you're running, and that's even truer when delving into categories. Apple has made a gesture towards giving more titles their moment in the sun through a low-key update to the App Store in iTunes and on iOS 6 devices. Jump to at least some categories, such as games or education, and you'll get the same carousels, banners and other promotions that would normally be reserved for the main portal. The shift is a simple one, but it theoretically helps App Store shoppers go beyond the surface -- and developers to reap the rewards.

Skylanders: Lost Islands, a free-to-play resource management game from Activision's mobile division, is out now for iOS devices on the App Store. As the latest in the Skylanders series, Lost Islands has players building their own villages in the land of Mabu while constrained to the standard limitations of similar free-to-play games.
Reduced amounts of resources and energy will encourage players to delve into the game's in-app purchases that will speed up their town's progress. As expected, Skylanders characters are unlockable in the game when using the codes associated with real-life figurines. Skylanders: Battlegrounds is expected to land on iOS in the coming weeks as well, that game being described as a "console-like action RPG."

It likely won’t be as sleek or fast as a Nexus 7 or Nexus 10, but a new tablet running both Android and Linux is in the works for open source enthusiasts and lovers of low-budget devices. PengPod tablets, made by a company called Peacock Imports, will dual-boot Android 4.0 and a version of Linux with the KDE Plasma Active interface for touch screens. But in order to reserve a tablet for yourself, you'll have to contribute to the company's crowdfunding project on Indiegogo and hope enough money is raised to begin production. 'Our goal is to build a powerful, True Linux Tablet, one free of Google and Android's restrictions, at a reasonable price,' the PengPod IndieGogo page says. 'If you're a Linux fanatic you probably ended up getting an Android phone. Hey, it's Linux right? It'll be open, run all the programs I'm familiar with and let me hack around and have some fun right? Too often, this is not so. That is why we set out to find a way to run real Linux and all the software you really want.'

Apple has paid 20 million Swiss Francs (approximately Ł13 million) to the Swiss railway operator, SBB, after using its iconic clock design without permission.
According to AFP, the design was introduced to the iPad with the iOS 6 update and was immediately met by a complaint from SBB, which has used the design in all its stations since 1944, and which had awarded an exclusive licence to the watch manufacturer, Mondaine.
The payment settles the dispute and will allow Apple to continue using the design.
“Apple shows great taste by choosing this design for their clock on their devices, and now, the owners of Mondaine watches and clocks as well as iPad owners can even enjoy the same distinct design,” commented Mondaine co-owner Andre Bernheim.

An Apple repairs expert has claimed that Apple is failing to recognise problems with the microphone on the iPhone 4 and 4S.
According to Channel News, Patrick Lee, CEO of the Australian repair firm iExpert, has identified a recurring issue with the top microphone on these devices and says the, despite the same problem being reported around the world, Apple has failed to recognise this ass a hardware issue.
“One of my biggest complaints is the failure of the top microphone. Apple refuses to recognise this problem which is caused by a component failure on the board,” said Lee.
“The problem is only with the top microphone, not the microphone that is used for Skype or video calls. Owners who go to Apple with their faulty smartphones are charged a $179 warranty replacement fee if they are outside of their warranty.”

As Samsung and Apple continue to exercise their stranglehold on the smartphone market, with both vendors accounting for almost 50 per cent of the market, Sony and HTC appear to have made the most significant inroads in Q3, having overtaken RIM and Nokia.
The smart phone market reached 173.7 million units during the third quarter of this year, growing 44 per cent year-on-year, according to Canalys. And having been absent from the top five for the past six years, Sony has rocketed up the rankings with 8.8 million units to occupy third place behind Apple and market leader Samsung. One of the key reasons for the brand’s resurrection appears to be the release of a host of new product in Q3, including the Xperia GX and SX.
Holding strong in fourth spot is HTC, with just under 5 per cent of the market. The vendor offered up a range of competitive products in Q2, such as the One Series and Desire V, prior to the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5. Pete Cunningham, Principal Analyst, commented: "While going head-to-head with the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been challenging, the vendor has had strong sequential growth in major developing markets, such as China and Indonesia. Q4 is going to be tough for it, along with the majority of Android- and Microsoft-based vendors, and continued investment in brand is of the utmost importance."
RIM stayed in fifth place, while North Asia-based vendors LG, ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei all shipped impressive quantities of their own-brand devices, overtaking Nokia, as the vendor and consumers waited for the October Windows Phone 8 launch.
Asia Pacific accounted for over 53 per cent of the worldwide smart phone market. With China breaking through the 50 million unit barrier this quarter. Samsung held on to its lead in China, despite strong competition from rising local Chinese vendors. Lenovo has moved into second place, assisted by volumes of lower-priced smartphones and a focus on its routes-to-market through distribution.
"When considering actual use of smart phones, however, the markets differ dramatically again, determined by network availability, speed, pricing and localisation. For example, data from the Canalys App Interrogator tool shows that the US market still leads in terms of app downloads and revenue," said Chris Jones, co-founder, vice president and Principal Analyst at Canalys. "For example, the US made up 45 per cent of all Apple iPhone app downloads in September, compared with just 11 per cent in China."
Regarding USA smartphone volumes in Q3, the iPhone 5 increased Apple's share sequentially to 38 per cent, with Samsung making up a quarter of the market. LG and Motorola followed as HTC dropped down the rankings. And, in spite of Sony’s international success, it currently holds less than 0.5 per cent market share in the US in Q3.
RIM held onto fifth place, while North Asia-based vendors LG, ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei all shipped impressive quantities of their own-brand devices. They overtook a struggling Nokia, as the vendor and consumers waited for the October Windows Phone 8 launch.
Asia Pacific accounted for over 53% of the worldwide smart phone market. China has been a powerful driver behind volumes again for many vendors and the market broke through the 50 million unit barrier this quarter. Samsung retained its lead in China, though its share has been under pressure from the rising local Chinese vendors, and remained the same as a year ago at 14%. Lenovo has moved into second place, assisted by volumes of lower-priced smart phones and a focus on its routes-to-market through distribution.
"When considering actual use of smart phones, however, the markets differ dramatically again, determined by network availability, speed, pricing and localization. For example, data from the Canalys App Interrogator tool shows that the US market still leads in terms of app downloads and revenue," said Chris Jones, Canalys co-founder, VP and Principal Analyst. "For example, the US made up 45% of all Apple iPhone app downloads in September, compared with just 11% in China."
For USA smart phone volumes in Q3 the iPhone 5 naturally boosted Apple's share sequentially, to 38%, with Samsung making up a quarter of the market. LG and Motorola came next as HTC slipped down the rankings. And though Sony has had global success, it must rethink its mobility strategy in the US where it held less than 0.5 per cent market share in Q3.

Also sports a kickstand for comfortable video viewing when you're not blinding would-be muggers.
iPhones account for 28 per cent of phones stolen every year, which is perhaps what encouraged protective father Scott McPherson to develop the Spraytect phone case, an iPhone cover that projects pepper spray at assailants.
McPherson spent a year developing the product for his daughter as part of a 'nurturing desire for her protection'.
Available in a number of colours (black, white, blue, pink) for the fashion-conscious buyer, the spray ingredients are made from 'a proprietary blend of peppers with one of the hottest, habanero pepper, as the main ingredient'.
Beyond blinding baddies though, the case also sports a 'fantastic bonus' in the form of a kickstand to support comfortable movie viewing.
The cases retail an introductory price of $39.95.

Rovio and Lucasfilm’s Angry Birds Star Wars collaboration has broken all previous Rovio records on its route to the top of Apple’s App Store downloads chart, topping the rankings just two and a half hours after its launch last Thursday (November 8th).
Launched across multiple platforms, including Apple, Android, Kindle Fire and Windows Phone 8, Angry Birds Star Wars has already proved to be hugely popular amongst customers, with 1,406 of the 1,547 user reviews currently posted rating the game five stars out of five.
The latest addition to Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise is the fifth instalment of the series, which topped the one billion cumulative download mark earlier this year.

It's a few months late, but at least it's hitting the streets for a few less dollars than expected. The Datawind-built Aakash 2 is finally a reality, launching in India on the nation's National Education Day. It's the second iteration of what amounts to a barebones, affordable Android slate, packing a 7-inch touch panel, 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of Flash storage, Android 4.0.3, built-in WiFi and a front-facing VGA camera. Reportedly, this one's going to be shipped to Indian students for Rs 1,130 (around $21), while outsiders will be able to snag one for closer to $80. Of course, the difference now is that these kinds of projects aren't quite as novel. Indeed, Chinese megashops are hawking low-rate Android tablets right now for around the same amount, setting a new (low) bar when it comes to pricing on ho hum slates. Still, we're all for getting technology into the hands of students, and you can learn a bit more about what those very students can expect from VentureBeat's hands-on just below.

RIM has officially announced that the next version of its mobile OS will be launched on Wednesday, January 30th 2013, along with two new handsets.
The new phones will demonstrate the new BB10 features, including BlackBerry Flow, which will allow for ‘seamless navigation’ between apps.
Other features include BlackBerry Hub – a central bank for messages, notifications and events, and BlackBerry Balance – designed to help the user keep their personal apps and info separate from their work-related data.
Thorsten Heins, president and CEO of RIM, commented: "In building BlackBerry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs.
"Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities.
"All of this will be integrated into a user experience – the BlackBerry Flow – that is unlike any smartphone on the market today.
"Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with BlackBerry 10. We are looking forward to getting BlackBerry 10 in the hands of our customers around the world."

An American woman has been tricked in to paying $200 for a mirror after being convinced it was an iPad.
Apparently, Jalonta Freeman of Arlington in Texas was at a petrol station when a man pulled up and offered her an iPad at a quarter of its retail price – a deal that she duly snatched up.
“He was, like, okay, I gotta hurry up and go and stuff and he drove off,” said Ms Freeman.
However, after he left, she found that the ‘iPad’ was in fact just a mirror with a picture of an iPad taped over the front.

Even though 34 per cent think the Bring Your Own Device trend puts companies at risk.
We covered an infographic a few weeks ago that detailed the mobile elite, employees that embrace Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) schemes to stay connected to the business at all times.
However, Kaspersky Lab and B2B International report that a third of organisations give staff unmonitored access to company data from their smartphones, which puts them at risk of security attacks.
38 per cent of companies apply restrictions on smartphone use, such as bans to network content, while 19 per cent have a sweeping ban on the use of mobiles for work activities.
But just 11 per cent of companies actively use Mobile Device Management (MDM) software to keep phones and tablets in line with security policies, despite 34 per cent believing devices present a significant threat to the business.
Meanwhile, 23 per cent admitted to losing business data due to the loss or theft of mobile devices.
David Emm, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, said; "BYOD is a tricky subject for organisations. Allowing employees the opportunity to use their own devices in the workplace can lead to enhanced productivity and creativity, but can also bring increased risk.
"Rather than applying a blanket ban on the use of personal devices, businesses should look to manage and secure the use of these devices, enabling them to reap the benefits of BYOD without the security worry."

Toys R Us has toys in the millions all under one roof, but the firm's in-store sales could be impacted this Christmas as more than half of mobile users plan to use their devices for shopping.
With that in mind, it's perhaps perfect timing that the retailer has revamped its mobile shopping apps and sites for Toys R Us and Babies R US, while launching a tablet-optimised site for both brands.
Customers will now have access to 'Buy Online, Pick up in Store' and 'Ship to Store' options through smartphones and tablets, something that was previously limited to desktop sites.
The apps and sites will also support product browsing, reviews, item info and video viewing, while searches can be completed based on a number of categories.
However, in-store shopping isn't dead just yet and there's a new barcode/QR code scanner for users to access extra product details when at the shop.
Of particular interest is the decision to embed location-based ads into the platform, which will allow users to find local deals based on their zip code. There's also a 'R Mobile Messaging' programme that provides registered users with coupons and events via text message twice a week.
Deals and favourites can also be shared across social networks Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
Milton Pappas, VP, e-commerce customer experience, Toys R Us, said: "As more and more customers use their mobile devices to browse and shop with us, we have worked to enhance this channel by redesigning our mobile site and apps, and have launched a tablet-optimised experience, making it even easier to shop Toys R Us and Babies R Us while on-the-go."

Apple, Samsung, HTC and the like have been key drivers for the proliferation of touchscreen-only phones, with BlackBerry one of the only OEMs to continue sales of traditional QWERTY keypads.
Indeed, sales of touchscreen phones in the UK have grown by 25 per cent year-on-year, according to GfK, with the devices occupying almost 90 per cent of mobile contracts, rising from two-thirds in 2011.
Hussein Elsheibani, account executive, GfK, said: "Throughout 2012, touchscreen-only phones in this category have established clear dominance in the market, driven by the success of high end models.
"It is not only the touchscreen hardware, but also the software that comes with it that appeals to consumers. The touchscreen enables the consumer to use their handset for multiple purposes with the amount of applications being developed increasing immensely.
"This combination of a quality touchscreen and applications has been key to the uptake of touchscreens and will be key to the continuation of the uptake in the consumer market."
A prime example of touchscreens dominating the mobile market was demonstrated in Q3, with the Samsung Galaxy S III, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 ranking as the best-selling handsets.

Good news for fans of Android alternatives: Google's just added binaries for Jelly Bean 4.2 to AOSP. Up until now, only the Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 had been privy to the company's latest OS version bump, but with the presence of these files on its developer portal and updates leaking out early, custom ROMs are just now a stone's skip away. Curiously, Mountain View has omitted the Nexus 4 from the list, but devs willing to get their hands dirty with the Nexuses 7 and 10, as well as both variants of the Galaxy Nexus -- yes, Verizon's model is on the list -- can have at it right now at the source link below.

The very first CyanogenMod 10 builds surfaced while Jelly Bean was still extremely fresh in our memories. The passions around Google's new OS might have cooled months down the road, but that doesn't diminish the impact now that the first stable CM10 builds are here. Four (relatively) safe versions have arrived for devices that are either just getting their official Android 4.1 builds or were never destined to get one in the first place: support for the Samsung Galaxy S III in Sprint and Verizon editions is a natural fit, but both the LG Optimus Black and Samsung's Galaxy S II Skyrocket are making their own unofficial leaps. More devices should be coming down the road once any teething bugs are ironed out. You're still taking your own risks by going with a custom ROM, but it may be worthwhile for CM10 if perks like a root-friendly file manager or an expanded desktop are too tempting.

It's been a few months since UK TV operator Sky added remote control features to its iPad app, and now there's a similar refresh for the iPhone and iPod touch. The v4.2 update gives users brings remote control with support for gestures, DVR scheduling and management, a new guide as well as revamped navigation and search on the smaller screens, as long as they're connected to the same WiFi network as the box. The Android app is still without the new features, however they're promised to arrive there "in the coming months." As usual the update app is available at no charge via iTunes, hit the link below to check it out, or check out the press after the break for more details along with a demo video of the iPad version.

Alan Sugar has stated that despite being an iPad owner, he’s not so keen on Apple hardware.
According to T3, the Amstrad founder praised the software ecosystem that Apple has built and admired its popularity with young people but said that he was less impressed with the quality of the devices themselves.
“I've got the iPad, though I'm not really an Apple fan, to be honest with you. I don't wish to say anything bad about them, but they're obviously very, very successful. They're a fashionable product, a cool product to have, and they've been very clever in tying up the apps and iStores and iTunes and all that stuff,” said Sugar.
However, he also noted that: “when it comes to technology, the quality of the reproduction on the telephone, the sensitivity and all that, there are others that are streets ahead of them.”

Gartner’s latest report reveals that 169 million smartphones were sold in Q3.
The figures mean that smartphones accounted for around 40 per cent of all mobile devices sold in the quarter.
The report shows that Samsung was at the top of the worldwide mobile device sales table, taking 22.9 per cent of the market share with over 97 million units sold.
Nokia, LG, Motorola and HTC have all seen a drop in units sold since the last quarter, with Motorola and HTC taking a mere two per cent of the market share each.
Gartner also pointed out how operating systems fared in Q3, and it is no surprise to see that Android swamped the market with 72.4 per cent share – a rise of 20 per cent from Q2.
In second place was Apple’s iOS, which managed 13.9 per cent market share. RIM saw a decline in both handsets sales and market share, selling less than nine million units in Q3. With the recent announcement ofBlackBerry 10 plus two new handset in the pipeline, RIM could potentially claw back some of these figures in 2013.

The US firm will reportedly stop selling its extended warranty in Italian stores after being found to not be respecting EU-mandated guarantees.
Apple initially found itself in Italian court over the issue, after failing to make it clear to customers that its products come with a two-year warranty - as required by all electronics sold within Europe - as well as selling its own premium AppleCare service.
Whilst the firm has yet to make any formal announcements regarding the issue, the information was taken from a leaked email, which Apple sent out to retailers.
It details that whilst Apple stores will not longer offer AppleCare, customers will still be able to purchase the extended warranty service online via the company's website.
Italy may not be the only country to witness the withdrawal of AppleCare.
With the European Justice Minister writing to all member countries of the EU, it is possible that the firm may be forced to adopt a similar approach across Europe entirely.
As more customers become aware of the mandated two year warranty on products, less and less will be tempted to purchase AppleCare from the get-go, a trend that could cause the service to no longer be a viable option for Apple to offer.

Ranks as the UK's most commonly broken handset.
MobileInsurance.co.uk recently offered insight to the wildest insurance claims it's received, with the top spot going to a farmer who lodged his iPhone in his cow's anus.
The website now reveals that the iPhone 4 is the most commonly broken handset in the UK, though it's important to note that claims have soared since Apple unveiled the iPhone 5. Dropping the phone outdoors was the most used reason for breakage claims.
John Lamerton, co-founder of MobileInsurance.co.uk, said: "Cosmetic damage to iPhones is commonplace and most of the problems we see here are with cracked screens and water damage.
"Interestingly, the number of claims from iPhone 4 users has rocketed since the launch of the iPhone 5 - It would appear that once the thinner, lighter model with a bigger screen started appearing, owners of the previous version weren't quite as careful with their handsets anymore."
The full list of top ten most broken devices include:
1. iPhone 4
2. BlackBerry Torch 9800
3. iPhone 4S
4. iPhone 3GS
5. Samsung Galaxy S II
6. BlackBerry Bold 9900
7. Nokia Lumia 800
8. HTC One X
9. HTC Desire X
10. Sony Xperia S

November 14th, 2012, 14:38 Posted By: wraggster
Certain iPhone and iPad applications from a Japanese company have broken software piracy detection mechanisms that are sending out tweets on the user's own Twitter account, saying, 'How about we all stop using pirated iOS apps? I promise to stop. I really will. #softwarepirateconfession.' The trouble is, it's sending these out on accounts of users who actually paid up to $50 or more for the software and who are legally using it. The app is asking for access to users' Twitter accounts, but does not give the reason why it is asking, so the author of the article concluded (rightly) that things were being done deliberately. Would you want your legally purchased software to send out messages to all of your contacts on Twitter or on other social networks saying that you were a software pirate? Would you excuse the writers of the software if it was just an error in their piracy detection measures?

New feature will allow users to make calls via wi-fi, providing businesses with 'enriched collaboration'.
It's no secret that RIM has suffered over the past year or thatBlackBerry users have become disenchanted with their devices, but the firm hoped to revive interest this week and announced its BB10 launch for January 30th 2013.
Now, RIM has launched BBM Voice, an integrated feature of its BlackBerry Messenger instant messaging service that will allow users to speak to their contacts and give their thumbs a rest when they're connected to wi-fi.
The move brings RIM a step forward but it's still behind, with the VoIP space dominated by Microsoft's Skype, while Apple already has a footprint in the market with Facetime.
As with BBM, BBM Voice will work globally, and the firm reckons it will provide businesses with 'enriched collaboration' while offering friends and family better comms over the Christmas season.
T.A. McCann, VP of BBM and social communities at RIM, said: "The new BBM Voice feature is for when you’re travelling and you want to call home without worrying about phone charges.
"It’s for when you have news you can’t wait to share, for quickly explaining complicated details, and collaborating with colleagues. Whenever your ideas are too big for text, there’s BBM Voice."
The service comes as part of the BBM version 7 update and is in beta for devices running the BlackBerry 6 or higher with support for BlackBerry 5 in the pipeline.

"The team behind CyanogenMod, one of the most popular community-driven, Android-based operating systems for phones and tablets, has announced that they're moving to Cyanogenmod.org after their .com domain was held ransom by a community member. He had been in control of the .com domain name for some time, but the team found out he was impersonating Cyanogen to make deals with community sites. When they removed his access to other parts of the CM infrastructure, he demanded $10,000 to relinquish control of the domain and threatened to change the DNS entries. When they refused to pay, he went through with it. The team is now disputing control of the domain with ICANN. They said, 'We will continue to be open about the what, when, how, but unfortunately, we may never know the "why" – though greed comes to mind. The team itself has not made a profit off of CM and that is not our goal. But to have one of our own betray the community like this is beyond our comprehension.'"

We didn't beat around the bush when calling the original Nexus 7 the best tablet your hard-earned $200 could buy, but those who wanted one with built-in mobile data were sadly left out in the cold. Today, Google's remedying that. The Nexus 7 tablet with WiFi + Mobile Data is shipping today in unlocked form, with a sole 32GB model available for $299. It's the same unit that passed through the FCC's database just weeks ago, offering Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), a SIM slot with an AT&T SIM (for use with HSPA+ connections on over 200 GSM carriers around the world), and the same overall fit and finish from the original. We'll be spending a bit of time with this guy in the days to come, but those already sold can pass along their billing information in the source link below.

All three sizes of Google's hardware family are now available for purchase in both the US and Canada. Joining a 3G-flavored Nexus 7, the LG-made Nexus 4 starts at $299 for 8GB, Samsung's Nexus 10 rings in at $399 for 16GB. And what do you get for that kind of money? A whole lot; the new Nexus phone houses Android 4.2, Snapdragon S4 Pro and rich 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 display. Meanwhile the ten-inch Nexus tablet packs the same fresh software, an incredible 2,560 x 1,600 resolution screen and a quaddual-core 1.7 GHz processor, so a whole lot of bang for several hundred of bucks. Bastion for iPad is now a universal app with support for iPads 2-4, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and 5th generation iPod touch. Developer Supergiant announced the update on its site today, noting it includes upgrades such as full optimization for the iPhone 5 screen and iCloud support (to transfer saves).
The developer previously stated it "felt the game experience would not translate well to the iPhone's smaller screen," but the launch of the iPhone 5 had them take another look. Bastion is currently $4.99 and the update is free if you already own the game on iPad.

The Wall Street journal has reported that Samsung is close to completing mobile devices with flexible OLED displays.
A source said the be close to the matter told WSJ that handsets are set to be released in the first half of 2013.
Samsung’s display unit is allegedly in the last phase of development of flexible OLEDs. They have been in the development phase for many years, and Sony and LG have already launched prototypes. So far, manufactures haven’t been able to commercialise them, but Samsung hopes to be the first to bring the product to market.
Using flexible plastic screens rather than glass could make mobile devices cheaper as well as lighter. If the rumours are to be believed, we could be seeing these devices very soon.

New research by insights firm Nielsen reveals that over three quarters of the UK’s Android smartphone owners send internet data via Wi-Fi.
This compares to just 22 per cent who chose to transfer their data through 3G.
The average UK Android smartphone owner conducts most of their mobile data ‘offloading’ via Wi-Fi after 5pm, peaking between 11pm and midnight when 90 per cent commence transference, claims the research.
3G data, however, tends to peak just before the working day begins, again at lunchtime and finally during early evening, when users are unable to rely on a Wi-Fi connection.
Meanwhile, the research reveals that 3G mobile data usage drops by more than 55 per cent between 6pm and midnight, but when factoring in Wi-Fi, it actually increases by almost 30 per cent.
David Gosen, managing director for digital, Nielsen European, explained: "Wi-Fi is on average three-and-a-half times more dominant than 3G when it comes to delivering mobile internet data services. It peaks around midnight as users gravitate towards social networks, driven by their desire to stay connected through all waking hours.
"Previously, the main insight into the volume of mobile traffic came from the networks' own records,” he continued. “Now, with Nielsen Smartphone Analytics we can complete the whole consumer picture.
"The implications for all stakeholders in the industry are enormous in terms of being able to show the total level of demand for mobile data, the drivers of that usage, and how it varies by operator and application type."

The Gold version of the Blackberry 10 SDK will be released on December 11th, Research in Motion has announced.
The updated development kit will allow developers to complete final testing of their games and submit their apps to Blackberry App World ready for the launch of Blackberry 10 on January 30th.
The deadline to submit apps to the storefront and take advantage of the 10k developer commitment, which guarantees developers $10,000 revenue in the first year if they earn a minimum of $1,000, is on January 21st.
As well as the gold SDK, RIM will be updating the Blackbery 10 SDK on November 20th, which will include numerous bug fixes and increased functionality to the WebWorks HTML5 tools.
The mobile firm said it hoped the update would draw the WebWorks toolset closer to parity with its own Native tools.

"When Steven Sinofsky stepped down as head of Microsoft's Windows division earlier this week, multiple publications cited friction with other executives as the primary reason behind the departure. Whether or not that's the case—neither Sinofsky nor Microsoft has offered an official explanation, aside from the usual platitudes—someone with connections to Microsoft is claiming that Sinofsky's departure stemmed from a failed attempt to bring additional parts of the company under his control. 'Steven had apparently lost recent battles to bring both Windows Phone and the Developer Division under his control,' Hal Berenson, president of consulting group True Mountain Group and a former Microsoft executive, wrote in a Nov. 13 blog posting. 'I suspect that he saw those [losses] both as a roadblock to where he wanted to take Windows over the next few years, and a clear indication that his political power within Microsoft had peaked.' The departure, he added, was the 'outgrowth of conflict.' Berenson's claim was enough to draw Sinofsky himself into the discussion. In the comments section below the posting, Sinofsky left a short note suggesting that rumors of a multi-product takeover were, frankly, malarkey."

Toshiba has spent a surprising amount of time at the high-end of the tablet world this year with devices like the Excite 7.7 and Excite 13. It's taking an opposite tack going into the all-important holiday season. The AT300SE spotted earlier this year (likely to be called the Excite 10SE in North America) has been made official for the UK, and it's all about catering to the starter audience without tarnishing the core experience. The 10.1-inch slate is slightly thicker and heavier than its regular AT300 (Excite 10) cousin and scales back the cameras to 3 megapixels at the back and 1.2 at the front, but it preserves the quad-core Tegra 3 and 1,280 x 800 IPS-based display that we know so well. There's even a slight advantage to having held out for the frugal model: the AT300SE ships with Jelly Bean from the outset, which could leave it feeling faster than its Ice Cream Sandwich-toting predecessors. At Ł300 ($476), the lone 16GB model due this fall isn't officially as cheap as the AT300 on the street, although we wouldn't be surprised to see the real-world cost drop lower. We're mostly left wondering if the as yet unconfirmed Excite 10SE could beat the slimmer original's $400 price in the US.

The firm's head of mobile sales and marketing has acknowledged that its Xperia smartphone fails to compete with both Apple and Samsung.
In an interview with the German edition of the Financial Times, Dennis Van Schie admitted that Sony's Xperia smartphone lacks behind both the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III.
However, Van Schie took the opportunity to announce that Sony would be unveiling a new smartphone at next year's annual CES event held in Las Vegas.
"We will create in the near future a flagship Sony model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III," said the head of Sony Mobile's sales and marketing.
Van Schie also revealed that a new range of Sony tablets will be on show at the event too but they will be limited in number as "it has become very difficult to earn money with tablets."
That would certainly seem to be the case with the dominance of Apple within the market, as well as fierce competition from Microsoft's newly released Surface tablet.

Thieves have taken $1.5 million worth of iPad Mini’s in a raid at JFK Airport.
According to the New York Post, the heist took place in the same cargo unit that was the target of the 1978 Lufthansa heist that was immortalised in the movie ‘Goodfellas’.
The criminals struck just before midnight and used one of the airport’s own forklift trucks to load two pallets of the devices on to a truck. However, they drove off leaving behind three more pallets after being challenged by an airport employee returning from break.
The iPads had apparently just arrived from China and were awaiting shipment across the US.

While Kevin Bacon is still bothering Brits the land over with news of 4G and a hefty dose of borrowed nostalgia for Corrie, Catchphrase and Frank Carson, UK telecoms regulator Ofcom is already outlining its plans for a 5G Spectrum to be rolled out over the next decade.
The announcement outlined the firm’s plans to enable the release of new airwaves in a bid to meet the growing demand for data on the move.
Ofcom has also released new data on the UK's communications infrastructure, revealing that the amount of data consumed over the past year via its mobile networks has more than doubled to 20 million Gigabytes, as opposed to nine million in 2011.
The regulator claims that demand for mobile data could be 80 times higher than today by 2030, and is therefore preparing plans now to support the release of spectrum for future mobile services, possibly '5G', when the spectrum becomes available.
The plans is to draw on the 700 MHz frequency band, which, at present, is currently used for digital terrestrial television as part of future harmonised international spectrum planning. Furthermore, the release of the new frequencies will be achievable with no need for another TV 'switchover'.
Ed Richards, chief executive, Ofcom, said: "Within the coming months we will hold the UK's largest-ever auction of mobile spectrum for 4G. However, that may not be enough to meet consumers' future data demands, which is why we are already making significant efforts to prepare to go beyond 4G.
"Our plans are designed to avoid a 'capacity crunch', ensuring that the UK's mobile infrastructure can continue to support the inescapable growth in consumer demand and economic growth more generally."

Pokémon app is console giant's first paid-for title on iOS
Nintendo subsidiary The Pokémon Company has released a Pokédex app on the iOS App Store in Japan.
The title marks Nintendo’s first foray into paid-for apps on the App Store, and comes after The Pokemon Company released free Creatures Inc-developed mobile game Pokemon Say Tap? in July last year, which is also available on Android.
The latest app, also created by Creatures Inc, currently costs Ą170, and also features in-app purchases enabling users to expand and complete their Pokédex. It is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
The title allows users to search hundreds of Pokémon from the popular series, with information and images available on each entry. The Pokédex’s App Store page also appears to suggest there are small videos that can be played, as well as sounds for each pokémon.
Whilst not a traditional game, the release could mark a big shift in Nintendo’s development strategy, having previously been reticent to make titles for platforms other than its own. It should be noted however that any success will likely not result in the release of games based on Nintendo's other major franchises in the near future.

If you want to know just how broken the patent system is, just look at patent D670,713, filed by Apple and approved this week by the United States Patent Office. This design patent, titled, 'Display screen or portion thereof with animated graphical user interface,' gives Apple the exclusive rights to the page turn in an e-reader application. ... Apple argued that its patented page turn was unique in that it had a special type of animation other page-turn applications had been unable to create."The article doesn't really make it clear, but this is for the UI design of showing a page being turned, not the actual function of moving from one page to another. That said, the patent itself cites similar animations in Flash from 2004.

"iOS 6, by all appearances, has a streaming problem. This is separate from the network issues that led Verizon to state that it wouldn't bill people for overages that were caused by spotty Wi-Fi connectivity. The issue has been detailed at PRX.org with information on how the team saw a huge spike in bandwidth usage after the release of iOS 6, and then carefully tested the behavior of devices and its own app to narrow the possible cause. In one case, the playback of a single 30MB episode caused the transfer of over 100MB of data. It is believed that the issue was solved with the release of iOS 6.0.1, but anecdotal evidence from readers points to continued incidents of high data usage, even after updating. If you own an iPhone 5 or upgraded to iOS 6 on an older device, it is strongly recommend to check your usage over the past two months, update to iOS 6.0.1, and plan for a lengthy discussion with your carrier if it turns out your data use went through the roof."

Last year, Hong Kong residents were finding it hard to get their hands on the latest Apple iGadget even though supply was plentiful. An investigation revealed that most of the iPhones and iPads that made it into HK were being smuggled sans import duties into mainland China—where the devices were yet to be released—by housewives who were paid around USD 6 per smuggled gadget. Earlier this week, 25 of the suspected smugglers went on trial in Shenzhen city."

The mobile gaming boom continues unabated. A recent survey for PopCap found that 125 million people were playing games on handheld devices across the UK and US. SuperData Research says the mobile gaming market will be worth Ł4.8 billion by 2015 – almost three times today’s value. There is no shortage of good news. There are more players, more revenues at stake, widening demographics, and more opportunities for play than ever before. The explosion of mobile and tablet devices means gaming has gone from being a living room pursuit to something people do everywhere.

An interactive Pokemon encyclopaedia called Pokemon Zukan has been launched on the Japanese Apple App Store.
It’s the second Pokemon-themed release on Apple’s portal following the arrival of Pokemon Say Tap last year. This new title, however, is the first paid-for Nintendo iOS app, though purists will argue that it’s a Pokemon Company production which if of course a Nintendo subsidiary.
The app offers a visual guide to 650 different Pokemon characters and is only available in Japan.
The kicker for Nintendo loyalists may be the price, however. The app costs just Ą170 (around Ł1.30). That compare that the 3DS’ downloadable Pokedex 3D Pro, which cost Ł13.49.
However, the pill will be easier to swallow when gamers realise that the initial purchase only grants access to 150 Pokemon. The rest are available in four different Ą500 (Ł3.90) downloads.

November 18th, 2012, 00:02 Posted By: wraggster
According to a court filing obtained by Bloomberg, Apple and Google are considering arbitration in their legal battle over mobile technology patents. Both companies are trading proposals on a licensing agreement over essential smartphone patents. The possibility has sprung out of the ongoing dispute (Apple Inc. v. Motorola Mobility Inc., 11cv178, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin) between Apple and Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility.
“Apple is also interested in resolving its dispute with Motorola completely and agrees that arbitration may be the best vehicle to resolve the parties' dispute,” Apple said in the filing.
“We have long sought a path to resolving patent issues and we welcome the chance to build on the constructive dialogue between our companies,” Google General Counsel Kent Walker said in a filed letter to Apple. “While we prefer to seek a framework for a global (rather than piecemeal) resolution that addresses all of our patent disputes, we are committed to reaching agreement on a license for our respective standard-essential patents.”
“Apple's goal has always been to find a mutual and transparent process to resolve this dispute on terms that are fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory without the threat or taint of exclusionary remedies,” Apple General Counsel Bruce Sewell said in a letter to Google.
An agreement could end Apple's lawsuits against other Android hardware vendors. Apple and Android vendor HTC recently reached a 10-year patent licensing agreement.

We've already seen what makes the Nexus 7 tick, and the folks at PowerBook Medic have now done the teardown honors with its larger counterpart, the Nexus 10. Expectedly, there aren't many major surprises to be found, but the site did note the "complete ease" of taking the tablet apart, with no glue or other impediments getting in the way. It's also confirmed that this is very much a Samsung-made tablet, with the company not only putting it together, but manufacturing everything from the processor to the flash memory to the battery. You can find the full rundown at the link below.

You have to admit -- there's something extra special about receiving tablets. Perhaps it's their sleek and portable designs, or maybe it's because they're best for watching movies and playing games rather than pounding out important memos on a deadline. Their rep as entertainment devices is already changing, though: we've seen slates with pen input and bundled keyboard docks burst onto the market this year, and Windows 8 is only boosting that corporate-friendly image. Wherever you fall on the work / play spectrum, we've got some great slate choices for you. Hop past the break to dive in.
On the cheap
Apple iPad mini

Following years of rumors, the mini is finally here. Does it live up to the enormous hype? Yes -- and it manages to surprise in some ways, too, with a unique anodized aluminum backing, impressive battery life and performance that trounces earlier-generation iPads. The $329 price is a notch higher than the competition, but you get what you pay for. In this case, that's superior build quality and access to the tablet-friendly App Store.
Key specs: 7.9-inch (1,024 x 768) display, dual-core A5 processor, 16GB of internal memory, 512MB of RAM, weighs 0.68 pounds, rated for up to 10 hours of battery life.
Price: $329 from Apple

Nexus 10
The big brother to the Nexus 7 impresses with a stunning 2,560 x 1,600 display, great gaming chops and strong audio quality. The downside is middling battery life: we're talking about seven and a half hours when the competition delivers 10-plus.
Price: $399 from Google

Acer Iconia Tab A110
Looking for a slate that offers Jelly Bean and a lightweight design on a budget? The 7-inch A110 delivers, and it runs a 1.2GHz Tegra 3 processor, to boot.
Price: $230 on Amazon
Mid-range
Apple iPad 4

The mini may be stealing some of the new 9.7-inch iPad's thunder, but the smaller slate can't hold a candle to this device's super-fast performance -- thanks to the A6X chip under the hood – and the stellar 2,048 x 1,536 display. Like its 7-inch sibling, the fourth-gen iPad has the new Lightning connector, which makes it incompatible with older docks and accessories. If you have the money to burn, though, this is one worthy step up.
Key specs: 9.7-inch (2,048 x 1,536) IPS display, dual-core A6X processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, weighs 1.44 pounds, rated for up to 10 hours of battery life.
Price: $499 from Apple
You might also like...

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
Famous for its S Pen, the Note 10.1 is both a costly sketchpad and a capable Android tablet. Its plastic design isn't the most premium, and the price tag should be a good $100 lower, but features like pen input and multi-screen view are nifty and useful.
Price: $499 on Amazon

Dell XPS 10
The XPS 10 is one of several productivity-minded Windows RT slates available, targeting the business set with security features such as TPM plus integration with corporate IT departments. There's an optional keyboard dock, which ups the ante with two USB ports, HDMI and longer battery life.
Price: $500 from Dell
Money is no object
Microsoft Surface with Windows RT

Redmond's slate boasts a business-friendly pedigree, with the sold-separately (but mandatory, as far as we're concerned) Touch Cover providing the productivity chops with a comfortable set of keys. The 10.6-inch slate is also impeccably built, and the cool matte surface feels great in the hand. That said, those who favor apps and entertainment over getting work done on the go will want to stick to the Android or Apple ecosystems, which offer larger content selections.
Key specs: 10.6-inch (1,366 x 768) display, quad-core NVIDIA Tegra T30 processor, 32GB internal memory, 2GB RAM, weighs 1.49 pounds, rated for up to eight hours of battery life.
Price: $599 (with Touch Cover) from Microsoft
You might also like...

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11
The ARM-powered Yoga 11 takes the cake for most unique form factor: as its name implies, it sports a flip-and-fold design that lets it transform from a notebook into a slate and vice versa. In addition to that versatility, you get Lenovo's keyboard know-how and a Tegra 3 processor.
Price: From $799 starting in December

ASUS VivoTab RT
This device features the thin-and-light design and long battery life we loved from ASUS' Android-based Transformer tablets, and the optional keyboard dock provides a decent (though slightly cramped) physical keyboard and touchpad.
Price: $549 on Amazon

Sony Mobile's sales chief, Dennis van Schie, has gone on the record with a pledge that just about crosses the line from marketing to manifesto. Speaking to the Financial Times Deutschland, he said Sony "will create, in the near future, a flagship model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III." Such a claim doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of the manufacturer's existing top-end offering, the fast yet flawed Xperia TL, but it does raise our hopes for CES, since FTD reports that the superphone in question will be presented in early 2013 at both the Las Vegas show and Mobile World Congress. On a related note, van Schie also promised that Sony's chaotic array of online storefronts would become better integrated by the end of 2013, with every user being able to use a single ID across all their devices to access content -- something that sounds simple, but evidently isn't.

Those looking for the light at the end of the legal tunnel may want to take a seat: Apple and Samsung'songoing patent war just got a bit more crowded. Both sides are fighting to add hardware to their respective patent claims. The U.S. District Court in San Jose is approving these additions too, adding theiPhone 5 to Samsung's claims and approving the Apple's updated complaint to include the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III. More devices could be added, too -- Judge Paul Grewal specifically warned Apple to "think twice" before opposing future amendments on Samsung's part, which might include the iPad mini and 4th generation slate. For better or for worse, never-ending litigation and sticky sales injunctionsseem to becoming an unfortunate mainstay of the modern product cycle. We'll let you know when the ongoing battle poses a threat to your upgrade plans.

The launch of Android 4.2 brought a welcome smattering of extra features to the mobile world, but a recently discovered bug omits something slightly important: namely, the month of December. Dive into the People app on any device using the new OS, and the last 31 days of the year will be unavailable for contacts' anniversaries and similar special occasions. Google is aware of the flaw, although it hasn't yet said when it will have a fix in place. We've reached out to get a more definitive timetable for a solution beyond just what's implied by the Gregorian calendar. In the meantime, don't lean too heavily on that smartphone to remember an imminent birthday; people born in December are stiffed out of enough presents as it is.

Google likes to stealthily roll out Google Play Store updates for Android users on a frequent basis, whether it's to add new sections or to encourage a little more impulse shopping. We'd put a brand new revision in that last camp. The 3.10.9 tweak no longer just leaves us lingering at an app's page during an installation: start the process and the store offers suggestions based on fellow adopters' habits as well as a shortcut back to the main portal. Language mismatches in the store could also be a thing of the past with an option to translate descriptions into the device owner's native tongue. Along with a quicker way to add Google+ friends and get better app recommendations, Google's refresh is clearly built to remove those last points of hesitation before trying something new; if the app drawer is looking a little bare, hit the source link (or wait for an automatic update) to fill up.

The FBI has arrested one member of the gang that stole 3,600 iPad Mini’s from JFK Airport last week.
According to Fortune, suspicions were raised when it was reported that Renel Rene Richardson, an employee at the airport, had been making an inordinate number of inquiries among co-workers about the shipment before it was stolen.
He allegedly acted as a lookout as two accomplices used the airports forklift trucks to load two pallets of the devices on to a waiting truck.
Police are still looking for the truck and the other two members of the gang.
Apparently a large number of brand new iPad Mini’s have appeared on sites such as Craigslist since the heist.

Apple’s stock price has fallen by around a quarter of their value – the first such decline since 2003.
According to Forbes, the falling share prices has been spurred by investors selling shares after becoming spooked by supply chain issues. However, others say that the issue is arising from the possibility of new capital gains and dividend taxes due to be enacted in the US next year.
Whatever the reason, Apple has seen is stock prices fall by as much as a quarter of their value from a high point in September.
The strong decline suggests that the issues are due to taxation. Some analysts have theorised that although some investors are selling, most buyers aren’t buying – instead they are waiting to see how the negotiations in Washington pan out before purchasing.

No, I don't want to read your duty-free magazine, I've got Harry Potter on my iPhone.
A report from IMS Research suggests the appeal of in-flight movies is waning, with 50 per cent of American electronics users operating their devices while travelling on planes.
Of that group, usage accounts for 40 per cent of flight time on journeys that last at least an hour, though eight per cent admit to spending a whopping 80 per cent on at least one of their devices.
Some airlines have started to offer wi-fi on flights, though it's said to make little difference to the amount of media that users are gobbling on their phones, tablets etc. However, 30 per cent of respondents abstained from using personal electronic gizmos at all.
Rose Yin, market analyst at IMS Research, said: "Although not all passengers use inflight wi-fi, it is clear that many still brought along and made use of their electronic devices to help pass time onboard.
"We also found that regardless of whether inflight wi-fi is offered or not, the amount of time spent on these devices varies little; as passengers can just prepare enough offline content prior to boarding to help entertainment themselves later on."
In other news, Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin was thrown off a plane for playing Words With Friends on his phone.

An American father recently produced an iPhone case that projects pepper spray, and the news that follows suggests there's a need for such an accessory on the market.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says 40 per cent of robberies in large American cities are related to mobile phones and US and Mexican network regulators have vowed to clamp down on the crime.
It's believed that the stolen devices are being resold across the border in Mexico and other Latin American markets, which is why the partnership has come about. Robbery information will be stored in an international stolen device database that will inhibit devices from being reactivated when fleeing the States.
Julius Genachowski, chairman, FCC, said: "Today's announcement cracks down on the growing trend of stolen mobile devices. US and Mexican collaboration to block reactivation of stolen mobile devices in both countries sends a clear message to thieves and criminal gangs: this is a crime that does not pay."
The FCC and Mexico's Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT) will complete a report twice a year, detailing all associated info and data for operator commitments and so on, which will be made available online for the public.
In other theft-related news, one man was hunted in the UK for nabbing 252 iPhone 5s from an O2 store, whileiPhones occupy 28 per cent of stolen phones every year.

Strategy Analytics has released the App Ecosystem Opportunities report, which shows more than 350 billion smartphone and tablet app downloads will have taken place between 2008 and 2017.
Google Play will account for more than 45 per cent of phone downloads due to the vast reach of its Android OS, while Apple is set to command 56 per cent of tablet downloads in 2017 due to the iPad's market domination.
Interestingly, paid downloads will generate more than $57 billion globally over the same time period, but the average cost of a smartphone app will drop to eight cents in the next five years as free (with in-app ads) and freemium apps are set to account for 91 per cent of all downloads by 2017.
The change of direction will lead to a decline in revenue and increasing app store maintenance costs, such as marketing and app approval staff, which will prompt portals to devise new revenue generators.
Josh Martin, director of apps research at Strategy Analytics, said: "Paid downloads remain an essential component of the app ecosystem. Paid downloads will remain an important way for smaller developers to monetise their efforts. For developers committed to paid downloads transitioning to tablets may be the smartest way to preserve the business model over the long term.
"App Stores will also see a revenue crunch as more revenue is earned from advertising – revenue generated outside the bounds of the app store - and will need to prepare. Newer platforms such as Windows 8, BlackBerry 10, Tizen and Firefox are building their operating systems and storefronts with this knowledge which should go a long way to making them attractive to developers and end users."

Would you like a little silicon gore to go with that Kindle Fire HD 8.9 review? Well, you're in luck as the folks over at PowerbookMedic have just posted a teardown of Amazon's high-end tablet. Despite sharing a physical similarity to its 7-inch sibling, there are a few surprises inside: like its predominant use ofSamsung-sourced components (display, processor and flash storage), in addition to a connected 6,000mAh dual battery setup. DIY types can hit up the source below for an illustrated how-to, but as always, we caution you to proceed at your own risk.

Mozilla has added support for millions more devices to its Firefox for Android web browser.
Until now, Firefox supported phones running Android version 2.2 and higher – if the phone had an ARMv7 processor. The browser is now compatible with a number of devices using ARMv6 processors. These include the HTC Status, HTC ChaCha, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Motorola Fire XT, and the LG Optimus Q.
“At Mozilla, our mission is to bring the Web to as many people as we can. Given that roughly half of the nearly 500 million Android phones in use today run on ARMv6 architecture, this is an important step toward making the open Web free to all,” reads the Mozilla blog.
New accessibility features have been added, which makes web browsing easier for the visually impaired. One of these, Explore by Touch, enables the user to browse to web using speech output, sounds and vibrations.

Outpaces Samsung despite Galaxy S III being the quarter's best-selling smartphone.
Mobile ad network Adfonic has released its Global AdMetrics Report for Q3 2012 to show that Apple and Samsung have increased their global share of ad impressions, powering nine of the global top ten ad served smartphones.
However, Apple managed to retain the top spot ahead of its Korean foe to power 37 per cent of impressions, up from 34 per cent in Q2. This was achieved despite Samsung's Galaxy S III being crowned the world's best-selling device during the quarter, with the firm generating 24 per cent of impressions up from 23 per cent.
Apple's growth looks set to further too, as the iPhone 5 and new iPads weren't included in the figures due to its late September and October releases, though its existing iPhone and iPod Touch still managed to rank as the top two devices by ad impression share.
Victor Malachard, CE of Adfonic, said: "It is significant that, even though Samsung is making huge inroads in device ownership and gaining mobile advertising share, it is still losing ground to Apple.
"And these results don’t take into account the impact of new Apple devices such as the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini and the new iPad, which will be felt during Q4. Meanwhile new Samsung products such as the Galaxy S3 Mini will also start to appear. It’ll be very interesting to see how the Apple v Samsung rivalry plays out during Q4."
The full report is available from the Adfonic website – http://adfonic.com/news/reports/

Forget the love of a good woman, I'd rather snuggle up to a curvaceous Galaxy S III.
The OnlinePsychologyDegree has delved into the minds of mobile device users to find that usage doesn't decline at bedtime, but rather the opposite as one in three users would rather give up sex than their phone.
With that in mind, 95 per cent of people say they watch TV, text, and browse the web in the hour before they hit the sack, while 90 per cent of 18-29 year-olds sleep with their phone in or right next to their bed.
What's more, 25 per cent of people don't silence their mobiles before bed, so it's probably unsurprising that one in ten say they're disturbed from their slumbers a few times a week by calls, texts and emails.

AT&T screwed up in 2010, serving up the e-mail addresses of over 110,000 of its iPad 3G customers online for anyone to find. But Andrew Auernheimer, an online activist who pointed out AT&T's blunder to Gawker Media, which went on to publicize the breach of private information, is the one in federal court this week. Groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation worry that should that charge succeed it will become easy to criminalize many online activities, including work by well-intentioned activists looking for leaks of private information or other online security holes. [Auernheimer's] case hasn't received much attention so far, but should he be found guilty this week it will likely become well known, fast.

There are two Skylanders mobile games in the works, and one is even heading to the High Street.
The Skylanders Battlegrounds Starter Pack includes a special wireless Bluetooth Portal of Power that 'brings figures to life' on iOS, and three physical characters: Jet Vac, Series 2 Cynder and Double Trouble as well as a Platinum Treasure Chest, which features extra digital items to be used in Skylanders Battlegrounds.
The other game – Skylanders Lost Islands – can also use the physical toys. The title is a resource management game, challenging fans to rebuild and customize their own version of ‘Skylands’.
The two new titles joins the existing iOS title, Cloud Patrol, which has also received a significant update.

The number of apps created for iOS has passed one million, says social app discoverability company Appsfire.
The company revealed the news in a tweet but have not given any further information surrounding the numbers and have not yet updated the figures to account for November.
The number represents that total that have been submitted, and since around one in four apps have since been taken off or replaced, the current number on the App Store sits at a few hundred thousand lower.
This milestone comes as Android begins to catch up with app numbers sitting at around 700,000 according to Google.

Ubisoft today launched the ZombiU iOS app to coincide with the arrival of the game at the end of the month.
The app contains an ‘infection simulator’ which provides information on the virus and gives consumers the chance to see what they would look like if riddled with the virus.
Users can also use the app to record emergency video messages and share their zombiefied images and panicky videos on Facebook and Twitter.
The new app will act as a promotional tool for the new survival horror game, which launches alongside the Wii U on November 30th.

Windows Phone may not have the market share of Apple or Google, but it does appear to be winning in one key area for game developers: monetization. According to data from EEDAR's 2012 Mobile Syndicated Reports, sent to GamesIndustry International, Windows smartphone users "consistently outspend their peers" with almost 10 percent of Windows gamers classified as "Whales" (those who spend more than $25 a month) compared to just four percent on both iOS and Android.
EEDAR also noted that of the over 4.5 million smartphone gamers who use a Windows OS device, 28 percent are "Dolphins" - people who spend between $5 and $25 per month. The percentage of Dolphins drops to 19 percent among iOS users and 15 percent among Android users. Overall, Windows has the smallest percentage of non-payers at only 21 percent.
If Microsoft can keep these percentages while growing its total installed base for Windows devices, then developers will certainly have to think about supporting the platform. For now, though, audience size certainly still matters.

Apple was today granted a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, filed as 8,316,046, which lays out the framework for a mobile device to "collect and store journal event data over a time span, the journal event data comprising data associated with a plurality of events, including a location and a timestamp of each event." Moreover, the first independent claim spells out that the system would utilize geotag data ("locations and timestamps") in order to parse events.
In layman's terms, the platform would be able to automatically separate check-ins, pit stops, photos, activities and movements based on when and where things happened. From here, it's anyone's guess as to what Apple would do with the information, but you don't have to gaze beyond the 'Events' section in the company's own iPhoto application to get a few solid ideas. One might even say that Apple's attempting to provide a Path-like experience within the iOS core, but who knows if it'll ever actually act on its earlier inclinations. Those who like to let their imaginations run wild can have at it in the source link below.

The "Smoked By Windows Phone" marketing drive has seen over 250,000 head-to-head handset battles so far, with many hits for Redmond and also a few embarrassing misses. The campaign is now changing tack to embrace a slightly safer, less physical tone, under the banner of "Meet your Match." The side-by-side comparisons with rival phones will remain, but the spotlight has been broadened to cover features like camera work and sharing, among others, instead of focusing only on speed. While it's likely the offer of free phones as prizes that will light up faces in the promo vids, regardless of the strengths of the OS itself, the overall pitch certainly feels more on-point than some others we've seen.

MacTechnology's Robert Peckham talks about the new-look Apple store design.
Every time I get a phone call from any of the IT industry journalists I know, it’s always to ask for my comments about some newly revealed negative aspect of working with Apple as a reseller, service provider or VAR. And I've had quite a number in the past few weeks, all about the same topic...
If you mention V2 to any Apple Premium Reseller (APR) in the UK, they'll either roll their eyes and tut, or hang their shaking head in desperation. What is V2? In a nutshell, it’s the new-look Apple store design that has been rolling out across Europe for almost two years, which is now being brought to the UK after some hesitation.
Why is this such a big thing? Because Apple is insisting all its APR retail partners must pay to refit their stores under V2, or lose their coveted APR status together with Apple’s support of their marketing, performance rebates and all the other margin enhancers that make APR stores in any way profitable. And Apple won't be paying for V2.

Having arrived on the market earlier this month, Windows Phone 8 devices are currently experiencing a variety of teething problems, with HTC and Nokia handset users reporting rebooting issues and low battery life.
A number of HTC 8X users have been left frustrated by their mobile randomly rebooting, while Nokia Lumia 920 users have also reported reboots and freezes, along with poor battery life. These battery issues have led some users to wipe their mobile in an attempt to achieve a quick solution. However, rather than yield the intended result, this move has only served to compound their misery, leaving some devices stuck on a Nokia splash screen.
In separate statements to The Verge, both Nokia and HTC stated that they are aware of the rebooting issues. "‘We are working with Microsoft to investigate these reports. We will provide an update as soon as more information is available," said a Nokia spokesperson, with HTC confirming that it is currently looking into the problem at call centres and within its labs.
Earlier this year, Nokia's Lumia 800 handset was also blighted with a variety of battery issues, leading to the manufacturer being inundated with complaints.

A petition has recently been started to get the developer of the popular Android 'MIUI' ROM, Chinese based Xiaomi, to comply with the GPL. While Android itself is licensed under the Apache 2.0 License, and therefore does not actually require derivative works to be FOSS, the Linux kernel itself is GPL-licensed and needs to remain open. Unless Xiaomi intends to develop a replacement for the Linux kernel, they need to make their modifications public."

Apple’s range of iDevices dominate the Christmas lists of kids aged 6-12 in the US.
Its success comes at the expense of Nintendo’s Wii U, which is forced into second place according to new data from Nielsen.
Apple’s iPad is the most sought after gift followed by Wii U, iPad Touch, iPad Mini and iPhone. Around half of the kids surveyed expressed interest in an iPad, up from 44 per cent the year before. 29 per cent will be asking for a Nintendo 3DS.
Xbox and PS3 also feature highly with 25 per cent and 26 per cent respectively. It’s bad news for Vita, though – Sony’s machine will feature on the Christmas lists of just 14 per cent of those questioned, which is lower than the 18 per cent who’d like a PSP.

Whether you're on a tight budget or have a fat wallet, simply look to our surefire list of the best and most unique mobile devices to place under the tree. But enough with the chatter... let's start shopping!

The HTC One X for AT&T combines excellent performance, a fantastic camera and one of the best displays on the market into one stunning handset. We've little doubt that any gadget fan in your life will love the One X, which is set to get even better with an upgrade to Android 4.1. The same is true for its alter ego on Sprint, the EVO 4G LTE, which features much of what we love from the One X and adds to it a dedicated camera button, a larger battery, removable storage and a handy kickstand.
Key specs: 4.7-inch HD (1,280 x 720) S-LCD 2 display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 8-MP rear / 1.3-MP front cameras, 16GB built-in storage, Android 4.0.

[h=4]YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE...[/h] [h=4]Motorola Droid RAZR M[/h]The Droid RAZR M is an outright budget superstar. The phone boasts a speedy dual-core processor, dependable battery life and a fantastic still camera. Yes, it sports a sub-premium qHD display and the video camera is lackluster, but for the price this is an incredibly well-rounded smartphone.
Price: $0.01 (Verizon) at Amazon Wireless
[h=4]Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G[/h]Don't expect it to go toe to toe with our other budget contenders, but the Galaxy S Blaze 4G is an excellent value for T-Mobile customers. The phone offers robust performance, long battery life and excellent call quality. It also features a truly respectable camera.
Price: $20 (T-Mobile) from Wirefly
[h=2]Mid-range[/h][h=3]GALAXY S III[/h] While most of us prefer HTC's high-end offerings at AT&T and Sprint, the Galaxy S III is an excellent smartphone in its own right. It also has the distinct advantage of being available for all of the major national carriers. The Galaxy S III boasts a spacious and beautiful display, an excellent camera, fantastic performance and solid battery life. Needless to say, it's certain to make any gadget lover giddy. Better yet, like the One X, the Galaxy S III is set to receive an upgrade to Jelly Bean in the near future.
Key specs: 4.8-inch HD (1,280 x 720) Super AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 8-MP rear / 2-MP front cameras, 16GB or 32GB built-in storage, Android 4.0.
Price: $40 (Sprint), $100 (AT&T) or $60 (Verizon) at Amazon Wireless; $200 (T-Mobile) from Wirefly
[h=4]YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE...[/h] [h=4]Motorola Droid RAZR HD[/h]One of the most anticipated smartphones to debut this season is the Droid RAZR HD for Verizon Wireless. The device is a huge improvement over the original Droid RAZR, with excellent performance, a higher-res display and gobs of battery life.
Price: $150 at Amazon Wireless
[h=4]Nokia Lumia 920[/h]The Lumia 920 deserves special consideration for the shutterbug in your life, with a floating lens and sensor that bring unparalleled image stabilization and low-light performance. If the carrier is a deal-breaker, we're also big fans of the HTC 8X (on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon).
Price: $70 at Amazon Wireless
[h=2]Money's no object[/h][h=3]IPHONE 5[/h] If you're looking to make this holiday season truly memorable for someone, the iPhone 5 is your go-to device. Available for AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and a number of regional carriers, Cupertino's latest ranks among the most sought-after smartphones of the year. It boasts snappy performance, a top-notch display, commendable battery life and an excellent camera -- all wrapped in a truly beautiful enclosure. If you're really willing to splurge, be sure to grab either the 32GB or 64GB model, which will allow your loved ones to fill their phones to the brim with their favorite movies, music and photos.
Key specs: 4-inch Retina (1,136 x 640) IPS display, 1.3GHz dual-core A6 processor, 8-MP rear / 1.2-MP front cameras, 16GB / 32GB / 64GB built-in storage, iOS 6.

[h=4]Nexus 4[/h]For a pure Android experience, the Nexus 4 is tops. The unlocked phone's display and camera are miles ahead of the Galaxy Nexus. It costs a bit more than what you'd typically find on contract, but carriers like T-Mobile or Simple Mobile offer pricing incentives for bringing your own handset.
Price: $299 (8GB) or $349 (16GB) fromGoogle

Aside from the instant gratification of a hot beverage and jolt of caffeine, Starbucks is offering its patrons some free iOS gaming from Sega. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 is the Starbucks pick of the week, meaning that participating Starbucks locations across North America will have cards with codes printed on them available to patrons until November 27.
While the first episode of Sonic 4suffered from many problems, Sonic 4: Episode 2 showed marginal improvements over its predecessor but still failed to capture the series magic of yesteryear. Still, it's not a terrible game and would certainly pair well with that quad venti, sugar free, non-fat, no foam, extra whip caramel macchiato you're always ordering.

It's fair to say that some bugs take awhile to fix, and a public schedule isn't always an option; HTC knows this well. Still, Google may be pushing the limits with the solution for a longstanding Android bug that prevents resolving hostnames on some WiFi networks without using the full domain. The company has officially committed to providing a patch -- 2 years, 6 months and 23 days after the bug was first reported on April 29th, 2010. Google explains that the "next major release" after Android 4.2 should hold the remedy, and claims that a mix of "prioritization and resources" prevented the team from sorting things out between Android 2.1 and now. We'll take Google's word for it, although the vow won't be much comfort for anyone who's still holding on to that original HTC Desireand can't upgrade. At least the Mountain View team won't have to deal with any 17-year-old security flaws.

Following the footsteps of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is making its way to Android and iOS. Rockstarannounced today that a special 10th Anniversary Edition of the open world Scarface / Miami Vice inspired sim will be hitting the two popular mobile platforms on December 6th for $5. This spiffed-up mobile port includes updated character models, enhanced lighting effects, improved targeting and fully customizable control options. Technical upgrades aside, we caution not to drive directly against the sun while riding a motorcycle within the game; it nearly blinded us in the original console version, so we can only imagine how harsh it will be on your fancy high-res display. Don't say that we didn't warn you. Move past the break for a complete list of supported devices.

What do you think has been the best mobile to hit the market over the past 12 months?
In a year that’s seen a raft of new smartphones and tablets arrive on the market, we thought it’d be a great opportunity to see what those from across the industry believe to be the best release of 2012.
When it comes to smartphones, Apple and Samsung’s 2012 releases have swept the board in terms of popularity among consumers. Is this a trend that you subscribe to, or has something else caught your fancy? New handsets from HTC and Sony have also piqued the interest of many this year, while new offerings from Nokia have been garnering a great deal of attention of late.
We would also like to hear your thoughts on the subject of tablets in 2012. Does anyone out there truly believe the iPad Mini to be a genuinely worthwhile addition to the Apple family?
To let us know your thoughts, please get in touch via the comments box below

In 1976, Paul Terrell, owner of the Byte Shop in Mountain View, California, placed an order for 50 Apple-1 computers, becoming Apple's first dealer. Over at TIME.com, I've published three Polaroid snapshots of the Apple-1 which Terrell shot at the time. They're fascinating history, and it's possible they're the oldest surviving photos of Apple products.

Tagplay’s latest iOS release Hotel Vegas won’t be available to consumers in the UK.
And that’s because one of its many features is the inclusion of our very own Prince Harry. In the nude.
Why, you might ask? Back in August the second in line to the British throne was caught on camera frolicking with chums in a Las Vegas hotel room. In his birthday suit. Despite Royal appeals not to publish the pictures online their widespread internet availability led to a number of outlets doing just that.
PocketGamer reports that the game has already been banned in the UK ahead of its planned mid-December release on iOS and Android.
Tagplay says that it will “seriously challenge the limits of acceptable parody and satire in mobile gaming". Harry isn’t the only celebrity parody to feature. There’s a long list including Arnold Governator, Oprah Windfall, Mel Drinksome, and Dim Kardashian.

As usual, Apple thought Friday night on a holiday weekend was the perfect time to push some more paper through in itsongoing patent lawsuit against Samsung. According to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents, after Samsung asked to add the latest iPads, iPhones and iPod touches to its list of claims and the court approved the addition of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1, Apple is trying to put six more devices on the list. Listed in the motion are the Galaxy S III running Android Jelly Bean (but not Jelly Bean itself), Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Rugby Pro and Galaxy S III mini. As usual, the case will proceed, we'll wait to hear if these requests are approved by the court and in the meantime, iThings and Galaxys alike will continue to fly off the shelves. Given the season, for now it's time to be thankful we're not one of the lawyers spending their day working on this. That leaves us plenty of time for more interesting activities, like hand-to-hand combat against fellow shoppers for the right to purchase slightly discounted items.

One of the drawbacks of Google's Nexus 4 was its lack of support for 4G LTE. Now comes a report from AnandTech that it's possible to enable partial LTE support on the device. It seems that a simple software update can allow the Nexus 4 smartphone to run on LTE Band 4. All users have to do is dial *#*#4636#*#* (INFO) or launch the Phone Info app. After that, choosing to connect to AWS networks should allow the Nexus 4 to run on LTE networks on Band 4. The AnandTech report states explicitly that the LG Nexus 4 only works on LTE Band 4, on 1700/2100MHz frequencies, and supports bandwidths of 5,10, and 20MHz.

The Register has a BlackBerry 10 preview up. They say, 'BlackBerry users have a love-hate relationship with their phones. The devices were often forced upon users rather than chosen. At the same time, the handhelds were the most usable and useful communications gadgets you could put in your pocket.' The preview is surprisingly positive, and it goes on to look at BB10's Hub/notifications feature, which they call 'utilitarian' and efficient compared to Windows Phones, which are more about 'style and novelty' whilst being 'a bit limiting.' BlackBerry's implementation may actually improve the system, rather than detracting from it. With BlackBerry providing a QT environment (compatible withSailfish, which we discussed earlier) and RIM having managed to maintain BB's 3rd place in the mobile OS market, there may a chance for real three-way competition between QT, Android and iOS in the mobile market

Outside of custom projects, the cardinal rule for draping phones in exotic materials is that they must never, ever be truly high end devices: at best, they should involve mid-tier hardware that could be eclipsed by a garden-variety smartphone at a fraction of the price. Sony's maintaining that all too time-honored tradition by producing a gold-coated, 24-carat version of... the Xperia P. Yes, rather than spruce up a flagship like the James Bond-approved Xperia T, Sony has instead given the luxury treatment to a smartphone with a strictly middling 4-inch display and dual-core 1GHz processor. In fairness, the company sees this as an experiment rather than a Vertu-like business model, with the intent strictly to emphasize the unibody design. A maximum 15 have been built as a result -- and rather than count on impulse purchases from oligarchs, Sony hints that it's offering at least some of its gold Xperia P stock to followers on Facebook. As long as there's no pretenses of living the high life with what's really a very ordinary phone underneath, we're satisfied.

Last weekend I participated to the BlackBerry’s Got Game Port-a-Thon even. It was a 36 hour event, and the goal was to submit as much games as possible to the BlackBerry’s app world.
The new BB10 OS has a tool to repack Android and HTML5 applications, so I expected that most of the participants will do just that. The new BB10 is Qt based, so I thought that porting existing Qt apps is probably quite easy, but it’s not as straight forward as repackaging old apps, so I decided to do just that (hopefully less competition with this approach). I ported few QWidget and QML based apps just for the fun ;-)
[h=4]Porting Qt apps with BlackBerry 10 NDK[/h]I had 36 hours time to port apps in an environment that I had never used, so it was really important to learn how to use these new tools quickly. Luckily I can say that the BB10 native SDK is really good! The whole SDK is build on top of Eclipse based UI, and that’s pretty easy to use. It has a lot of project templates to choose from, and creating new installation packages from “file/export” is really easy.
The BB10 simulator is basically a x86 compiled image of the Operating System running on VmWare! This is how you should create all of you simulators. I’m looking at you Android. Booting up the simulator takes only few seconds, and launching new apps on the simulator is really fast.

PPSSPP is written in C++, and translates PSP CPU instructions directly into optimized x86, x64 and (soon) ARM machine code, using an efficient JIT compiler.
PPSSPP can thus run on quite low-spec hardware, including stronger Android phones and tablets, as long as there's support for OpenGL ES 2.0.
Many fixes, more games playable
Progress has been rapid, much thanks to several new contributors! As usual, see the downloads page for the new version, and look at the compatibility list.

Hello, All!
Finishing this week with the VGB-Android 3.6.7 release:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.vgb
The main addition is the ability to upload your gameplay state to a server and download states uploaded by other users. Please note that a state is your position inside a game, not the actual game.
I have also added the resizable virtual joystick, removed the thin garbage lines that appeared on some devices in the accelerated video mode, and made a few fixes to the way VGB applies cheat codes to a patched game (i.e. when .ips file present).
ALL CHANGES:
* Added State Exchange feature letting users exchange their gameplay states.
* Made virtual controls resizable via "Virtual Joystick Size" option.
* Removed garbage at screen edges in accelerated OpenGLES mode.
* Minor fix for cheats/patch interaction.

I have added a significant new feature to VGBA today:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.vgba
Starting with VGBA-Android 3.9.29, you can now swap your gameplay states with other users. In order to do that, select "Exchange States" from the menu. You will see the list of states for the game you are playing, uploaded by other users. You can either select a state to download or upload your own state.
Note that a game state is not an actual game, but just a frozen point in a game. In order to use it, you still need to have the actual game file, as well as own the game cartridge. Please, do not play games you do not own with VGBA.

New research from Deloitte says ten per cent of all in-store UK sales will be influenced by smartphones this December, with the devices acting as decision-making tools for $3.5bn worth of transactions.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean money in the bank for retailers, as consumers will primarily use their phone to research prices, store Christmas shopping lists and engage with friends and family using social media rather than make payments directly through the devices.
The influence aspect is set to account for Ł3.2bn of in-store Christmas sales, while Ł330m of sales made directly through smartphones and Ł500m in sales will be made via tablets.
Meanwhile, online retail is expected to grow by 17 per cent this Christmas, with total UK retail sales growing by one per cent. This supports data from comScore that shows Black Friday online spending passed $1bn for the first time ever.
Ian Geddes, UK head of retail at Deloitte, said: "Shoppers are responding to those retailers that combine the right products with exceptional customer service across all channels, dynamic and exciting online and mobile sites and a brand that they want to be associated with and invest in."
Colin Jeffrey, head of multichannel retail at Deloitte, added: "As with recent years, the strongest growth will be found online, with purchases completed on mobile phones double or even triple that of last year.
"Retailers without flexible collection options and mobile services are failing to meet basic customer expectations and will suffer as a result. The rapid adoption of tablets and the high number received as gifts this Christmas will drive a sharp increase in transactions through these devices.
"However, whilst transaction growth is slower for smartphones, their broader influence is far greater. Whilst we forecast 10% of in-store sales will be influenced by smartphones in December, by 2016 we predict this figure will be as high as 18% for the full year, equivalent to Ł43bn of sales.
"We are also beginning to see the power of social commerce with more and more consumers using Twitter and Facebook to share reviews, offers and product information. Retailers are also starting to use social media as a forecasting tool, monitoring buzz around certain products to predict demand."

Ordered to tell Samsung all of the company's HTC secrets, Apple throws a tantrum and adds a bunch of new products to the never-ending list of products Samsung has infringed on. Apple's tantrum stems from a ruling on Thursday that could have a large effect on the Apple lawsuit. The Apple lawsuit, which was filed in February, alleges that Samsung violated Apple patents related to user interface, technology and style. The first decision was found in favor of Apple to the tune of $1 billion, but Samsung is trying to get that ruling thrown out. But as the Apple lawsuit has gone on, the Apple lawsuit has gotten fiercer, and because of a ruling on Thursday, Apple throws a tantrum and is trying to add even more products into the lawsuit

Synthesizers are notoriously expensive, especially some vintage models, but how'd you like a Korg Polysix for the bargain price of $14.99? Well, as long as you've got an iPad (or a mini), that's now possible with the iPolysix app released today. The '80s-era analog polyphonic synth is "fully replicated," with plenty of additional tools for tablet composers -- the new Polyseq step sequencer, dual Kaoss Pads with chordal support, and a "production environment" with two synths, a drum machine and mixer. You can also publish your creations and remix tracks with other users via the SoundCloud-integrated Polyshare feature. If you're hemming and hawing about a purchase, make up your mind soon, as the app's price doubles on January 1st. You won't find it in the Play store, but the Android Polysix app we saw running on Miselu's Neiro prototype leads us to believe Google's OS won't be excluded from the jam session entirely. Advert / app demo after the break.

New research from bss digital highlights the fact that retailers need to make sure their websites are mobile friendly this Christmas.
The report reveals that nine per cent (approximately one in ten) of shoppers who used a PC to do their Christmas shopping last year will use their smartphones in 2012 instead. When applied to customers between the ages of 18 and 34, this figure becomes one in five.
Regional data reveals that Wales came up top with 93 per cent of people favouring their smartphone or PC to do their Christmas shopping.
James Southgate, client services director at bss digital says: "Our survey found that nearly 10 million people use a smartphone or tablet computer to do their Christmas shopping. In today's tough commercial climate, what company can afford to miss out on even a fraction of that business? But that's exactly what some businesses are doing by not having mobile friendly websites. If a website is not compatible on a handset, a competitor is just a click away."
PCR sister publication ME recently reported that ten per cent of all in-store UK sales will be influenced by smartphones this December, meaning the device could influence a staggering Ł3.5bn worth of sales.

Google is now updating its Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices with Android 4.2.1 as an OTA (over the air) update, whilst also fixing the now infamous December bug.
With the month of December left out of the People app, users were unable to select the month as a birthday or anniversary on account of it not existing. This bug has however been remedied with the introduction of Android 4.2.1.
The OTA update is going to be deployed gradually, so users could be waiting weeks until the phone receives the new software.
Furthermore, it is thought that Google will also be bringing Android 4.2.1 to the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus in the near future.

Sales on Amazon.co.uk up more than threefold.
Amazon EU says that Black Friday was the biggest sales day ever for the Kindle range of devices – Kindle, Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD,Kindle Paperwhite – with sales more than three times higher than any other day in the history of Amazon.co.uk.
The online retailer introduced the Kindle Fire to Stateside shoppers a year ago, but the device only reached the UK at the end of this October. However, neither the delay nor the fact Brits don't celebrate Thanksgiving prevented shoppers from buying the tablet, with customers snapping up the Ł99 Fire as it dropped from the usual Ł129.
Jorrit Van der Meulen, VP of Kindle EU, said: "In response to strong customer demand we included Kindle Fire in Black Friday deals week, dropping the price to just Ł99, and the reaction has been incredible.
"Customers purchased more than three times as many Kindle devices on Black Friday than on any other day in its history on Amazon.co.uk, and our previous record was impressive."
Amazon recently boasted that its Kindle Fire sales figures were up following the iPad mini unveiling, but remained cloak and dagger on hard figures just as it has this time around too. The company also claimed theKindle was its best-selling item on Cyber Monday 2011.

The new Nokia Asha 205 smartphone has become the first mobile device to feature a dedicated Facebook button, offering users quick access to the popular social network.
Following the launch of the dual SIM Nokia Asha 308 and single SIM Nokia Asha 309 earlier this year, Nokia’s latest addition to its more affordable smartphone range aims to keep users within one click of Facebook’s key features.
“People around the world use Facebook Mobile to connect and share with their friends," said Javier Olivan, head of growth, engagement and mobile for Facebook. "We are focused on delivering the best Facebook experience to as many people as possible and our partnership with Nokia perfectly complements our strategy of giving people around the world a rich Facebook experience for keeping in touch with their friends."
Timo Toikkanen, executive vice president, Mobile Phones, Nokia, also added: “Globally, young consumers have increasingly started using Facebook for socialising, keeping in touch and striking new friendships. The launch of the Nokia Asha 205 responds to this growing demand and gives them a unique option for accessing Facebook while on-the-go. We have seen that many people who use Nokia Asha devices are hyper-social and we are proud to partner with Facebook to improve the user experience of those consumers further with the introduction of the Facebook button.”
The launch of the 205 follows last month’s reports that Nokia would be targeting the world’s emerging markets with its Asha smartphone series.

iPhone 5 propels Apple to take leading position over Android devices
New data from Kantar Worldpanel suggests that the launch of the iPhone 5 has propelled iOS back into the leading position in the US handheld market.
For the 12 weeks ending October 28th iOS claimed a 48.1 per cent share of US smartphone sales, leaving Android with 46.7 per cent.
62 per cent of Apple handset sales come from existing Apple owners upgrading to a newer device. 13 per cent are customers switching from Android. 92 per cent of existing Apple owners said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade.
It’s a different story in Europe, however, with Android claiming an 81.7 per cent market share in Spain and 73.9 per cent in Germany. In the UK Android enjoys just 32.7 per cent of the market.

Easy certification, updates and free-to-play support a must says Xbox co-creator
Ed Fries, who has been contracted as an advisor to the group producing the open-source Android console the Ouya, has said that he expects Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony to emulate some of the aspects of the Ouya - namely a streamlined certification process, relaxed licencing regulations and full support of free-to-play mechanics.
Speaking to GameInformer, Fries spoke about the changes in market forces which have come about since the launch of the first Xbox, which he played a major part in creating.
"It's getting harder and harder for the traditional consoles to ignore the Apple kind of experience," said Fries. "Anybody can develop for the platform, certification is a relatively cheap and painless thing, and in the old days of consoles there are all sorts of myths and legends that say that's a bad thing to do. That's why the game business melted down in '84, there was too much junk on the market, but now you've got guys who make games like Fez who can't do an update to their game because it costs too much, if that game was on iOS that wouldn't be a problem, but because it's on XBLA it's a problem.
"Those kinds of ideas have to go away in the next generation. They'll go away in Ouya, they'll go away if Apple brings some kind of product into this space, the console makers like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, they have to respond to that, it's just the future. Likewise they have to respond to the free-to-play game model, the world is changing, people want this free-to-play experience, game developers want to build free-to-play experiences and the console ecosystem has to adapt to that. It can't just be $50 product in a box all the time."
Ouya has been funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter program which initially aimed at raising under $1 million but closed with a bankroll of more than $8 million. The console itself will cost $99 and features development tools as standard, enabling any user to create their own free-to-play games. The only restriction being that any game launched for the machine must be free-to-play.

BlackBerry 10 may be just around the bend, but it seems that's not going to stop RIM from launching a new handset. A leaked document posted by Crackberry has revealed the specs of theQWERTY-toting BlackBerry Patagonia 9620 -- there's BB OS 7.1 running the show with a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8655processor under the hood, mated with 768MB RAM. Par for the course, the display is a 2.44-inch, 480 x 360 affair, and you can also find 2GB of storage augmentable via microSD, a 5-megapixel rear snapper, GPS, WiFi and PTT support along for the ride -- if the source is to be believed. Info on pricing and the exact release date of the apparently budget smartphone is MIA as yet, but Nextel Mexico has it pegged for a December outing. You can sign up for a release notification if you're covered and can't curb your buying itch before BB10's entry-level offeringsland.

Amidst the fierce competition in the Chinese mobile market,Meizu has managed to keep up with its annual cycle to unveil its latest flagship device, the MX2. Announced at the launch event in Beijing earlier today, the MX2 comes with a Samsung-made 1.6GHz, Cortex-A9 quad-core SoC dubbed "MX5S," along with 2GB of RAM, a 30-percent faster GPU, a 4.4-inch 347ppi (1,280 x 800) gapless display with 3.15mm bezel and efficient "New Mode 2" technology (the description of which sounds like IGZO to us), an improved eight-megapixel BSI F/2.4 camera and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in memory. There's also a front-facing camera, dual-mic noise cancellation, MHL video output, S/PDIF audio output, a non-removable 1,800mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 and HSPA+ radio at 2,100MHz (2G at 900/1800). As before, the white double injection-molded back cover can be taken off to access the SIM card slot, but there should also be various color options in the near future. Read on for more info, and do also check out the official introduction video after the break.

Although the iPad is still leader of the pack, its market share has dropped significantly since 2010, leaving everyone wondering how long until Android takes over.
Early predictions favoured 2015 or 2016 as the crossover point, but Sameer Singh from Finvista Advisors believes the narrowing gap between Apple and Android suggests 2013 could be the year that consumers finally get over the iPad.
“That trend will continue as the share collectively owned by Android tablets surpasses that of the iPad in the first half of next year,” said Singh.
Rumours of the iPad mini throughout the year caused many consumers to refrain from buying the New iPad in Q3, preferring to wait for Apple’s first ever 7-inch tablet. But rather than make up the numbers with the iPad mini, the tablet’s high starting price left some wondering why they should chose this device when a 7-inch Android tablet was so much cheaper.
This slowdown put a sizeable dent in Apple's commanding worldwide market tablet share, which slipped from 65.5 per cent in Q2 to 50.4 per cent in Q3 2012. Compare this to 2010, when iPad had 87 per cent market share (reports IDC), and Android dominating the tablet market in 2013 doesn’t sound too far fetched.
“With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year,” commented ABI Research senior practice director Jeff Orr.
“As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers – new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content,” adds Orr.
IDC program manager Ryan Reith believes Windows 8 has also made an impact on the tablet market, but predicts its price could hold it back: "With the recent introduction of a number of Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets, consumers now have a third viable tablet platform from which to choose. However, price points are critical in tablets, and Microsoft and its partners will have a tough time winning a share of consumer wallet with price points starting at $500."
ABI reports that Android now powers more than 44 per cent of tablet shipments. This figure suggests that it won’t take long for Android to potentially overtake Apple, as more and more manufacturers and developers get on board.

Microsoft has reportedly signed a deal with iPhone manufacturer Foxconn to begin production of its own smartphone device.
First reported by rumour site Digitimes, the firm is extending the Surface brand into the smartphone market as a potential competitor for Apple's iPhone, which currently dominates the market.
It would signify Microsoft's further efforts to combat Apple and its dominance of the mobile device market, by producing a range of Surface branded products to compete with both the iPhone and iPad devices.
The report should be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as Digitimes has a mixed history on reporting such rumours.
Whilst predicting that consumers would be using Nokia tablets and iPhone 5 foldout keyboards by Christmas, the site did correctly predict the release of the iPad mini and upgraded screen size of the iPhone 5 ahead of its launch.
If true, the news would have massive implications for those firms partnered with Microsoft, particularly Nokia, who recently launched the Lumina range, which is based around the Windows Phone operating system.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft would overshadow the release of Nokia's Windows Phone with its own branded device so soon after its launch,
However, it wouldn't be the first time Microsoft did something similar, considering it launched the original Surface tablet as a direct competitor against its partnership with Acer and its own range of Windows 8 RT based tablets.

Android drops to second place as iOS takes 48.1 per cent of smartphone market share.
Apple has overtaken Android to reclaim top spot in the US smartphone market, as iPhone 5 sales begin to soar.
New smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech show that iOS has a 48.1 per cent share of US smartphone sales, with Android taking 46.7 per cent of the market. This is in no small part due to the growing uptake of Apple’s iPhone five over the past 12 weeks.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, commented: “The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods. This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3 per cent and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods.”
Despite Apple’s lead in the US, it continues to chase Android in the European smartphone market, whose dominance is represented by 73.9 per cent of sales in Germany and 81.7 per cent in Spain. However, Apple now has share gains in four of Europe’s five major countries, most notably in Britain, where it holds a share of 32.7 per cent.
Sunnebo continued: “Germany remains a tough market for Apple with its share falling by 5.1 per centage points over the past year. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has taken almost a quarter of the country’s smartphone sales over the past 12 weeks to boost Android yet further. In Italy, strong sales of the Nokia Lumia 610, the fourth best selling handset over the past 12 weeks, and the Nokia Lumia 800, the seventh best selling, have helped drive Windows’ share up to 11.7 per cent – the highest across Europe.”
The majority of iPhone 5 sales in the US have come from existing Apple owners, with 62 per cent upgrading to the new device. However, Apple has also benefitted from consumers switching from Android devices (13 per cent), people switching from BlackBerry devices (six per cent) and a small number of first time smartphone owners.
“Apple has always managed to maintain loyalty levels far above the competition, and this has clearly played a part in driving sales of its new device,” Sunnebo added. “An impressive 92 per cent of existing Apple owners in the US said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade. While loyalty is clearly key, it is also important to make sure that new customers are attracted to your brand. With roughly 60 per cent of US iPhone 5 sales coming from existing customers and 40 per cent from new consumers, Apple is achieving this at the moment – a clear sign of the strength of the brand in the US marketplace.”

Amazon EU has only just announced that Amazon.co.uk sold more Kindles on Black Friday (November 23rd) than any other day in history. However, Cyber Monday has broke records on a global scale as Amazon claims the shopping holiday has become the "biggest day ever for Kindle sales worldwide".
Numbers weren't revealed, but the retailer assures 2012 sales doubled the results of Cyber Monday 2011, while highlighting that its Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fires have been the top four best-selling items globally for almost three months.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Fire HD has been the most gifted and most wished for product on Amazon worldwide since launch.
Dave Limp, VP of Amazon Kindle, said: "We’re excited that customers made this Black Friday and Cyber Monday the best ever for Kindle worldwide—Cyber Monday was the biggest day ever for Kindle sales, and we’re looking forward to millions of customers opening a new Kindle this holiday season."

The ITworld article reads: 'Nokia has asked a California court to enforce an arbitration award that wouldprevent Research In Motion from selling products with wireless LAN capabilities until the companies can agree on patent royalty rates. Nokia and RIM both declined to comment on Nokia's request, a copy of which was obtained by IDG News Service, but such a filing is typically made after two parties settle a dispute through arbitration but one party does not follow through on the agreement.'"Also from the article: "The patents in question are U.S. patents 5,479,476, which covers user-adjustable modes for phones; 5,845,219, which covers call alert during silent mode; 6,049,796, which covers real-time search on a personal digital assistant; 6,055,439, which covers a cellphone user interface; 6,253,075, which covers call rejection; and 6,427,078, which covers a small, handheld workstation.

With all the hubbub surrounding Windows Phone 8, it's easy to forget that Microsoft has another new OS in the pipeline: a refresh known as Windows Phone 7.8. One group hasn't forgotten about the update, however, and that's all the current users of Windows Phone 7.5. Now, Microsoft is issuing a reminder that, yes, the update really is coming -- just not this year. The folks in Redmond assert that they're currently working with hardware manufacturers and carriers to deploy Windows Phone 7.8 to "as many devices as possible" in early 2013. So, it seems that Christmas will come a bit later for owners of older hardware, but at least Microsoft has a New Year's resolution worth sticking to.

After its untimely demise, WebOS showed some resilience by coming back in open source form and popping up in various devices hither and yon. On the vanguard of that resurrection isPhoenix International Communications, a team of volunteers who've managed to port the orphaned OS to a Samsung Nexus S device, running as an app inside Android. So far, the reborn OS app is displaying decidedly zombie-like slowness, but it's still an early pre-alpha build. If all goes well, you might one day be able to seamlessly switch between WebOS and Android without rebooting, letting you run apps from both systems. So, if you've been carrying a torch for the fallen system, check the video after the break.

A warning for brands not to miss their target audience by pushing to iOS.
Orange has released the Orange Exposure 2012/2013 study, which analyses mobile trends adopted by teens aged 11-18 in the UK, France and Spain. The respondents consider mobiles their primary device screen, with 83 per cent and 95 per cent of those in the UK and Spain owning a smartphone.
Reasons for favouring mobile included:
* 92 per cent of Brits say it's a "way to always have a media device at hand"
* 55 per cent of Brits say it's "mine and no one else’s" so “I can access what I want, when I want."
However, the report makes a key note for advertisers not to miss out on the opportunities presented by BlackBerry, even though 56 per cent of adult users want an iPhone 5. It shows that BB penetration among UK and Spain teens is two and three times higher than other mobile device, while iPhone's is low because of the high price tags.
Meanwhile, one in two Spanish respondents owns an Android device, with 38 per cent of Brits also owning one – a 14 per cent year-on-year increase.
Social media is also a big player with youngsters as Brit kids admitting to spending an average of ten hours a week using networks, while three-quarters of teens across the UK, France and Spain discussing watch they're watching on TV view social networks accessed from their mobile.
The figure supports the ever-growing trend of second-screen use, and PacketVideo's prediction that tablets will replace TV remotes in the future.
Stephanie Hospital, exec VP of Orange Digital Audience and Advertising Division, said: "The question that every advertiser and brand should be asking themselves is 'am I on top of this new consumer usage and am I using mobile marketing to its full potential?'
"The research lays bare the significant opportunities for advertisers to monetise and engage with their audience in a responsible manner – with teenagers so firmly adopting the mobile as their key device; and adults using multiple screens interchangeably as second nature - advertisers must sit up and harness its potential."

Smartphone owners in the UK seem more than a little reluctant to part with cash for their mobile apps, after a survey by MyVoucherCodes showed that 40 per cent of Brits never download paid-for apps.
The survey of 2,600 smartphone owners also revealed that 32 per cent occasionally pay for apps, while 27 per cent claim that they do so on a regular basis.
When those who never pay for apps were asked to explain why, 53 per cent said that they ‘didn’t think they were worth it’. 29 per cent, however, insisted that they ‘couldn’t afford’ to pay for apps.
Those who claimed that they would occasionally pay for apps said that they would be most likely to pay for social networking apps (71 per cent). The second most popular choice was new apps with 64 per cent, while 59 per cent stated that they would be most likely to spend on game apps. Sports/fitness apps came in at fourth with 57 per cent and food/recipe apps took fifth with 51 per cent.
Meanwhile, regular app buyers revealed that the average amount they would spend on apps each month was around Ł5.20.
Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes, said of the results: "It was quite interesting to see how many people don't actually pay for apps. They can seem quite expensive at the time, but when you consider that some are just 69p, it's not all that much in the grand scheme of things!"

It’s not often that you get to see the Activision logo on your iDevice screen.
Last night Activision Mobile Publishing released free-to-play title The Bowling Dead onto the Apple App Store.
As the name might suggest, the release combines two fan favourites – zombies and bowling. Players have to manage their resources, with bowling balls in limited supply and power-ups very much advised for progression.
The campaign mode includes 40 levels and an additional survival mode sees players competing for online high scores.
And being free-to-play, there are lots of ways of forking out real-world cash for in-game help.

After a successful showcase at Gadget Show Birmingham earlier this year, BubblePix is back to offer up its new Samsung-friendly 360 degree BubbleScope camera.
Back in August we spoke to inventor Tom Lawson about his unique smartphone accessory, and at the time it was just getting ready to launch on the iPhone 4/4S. Skip to a few months later and the BubbleScope range is going strong and expanding.
Now available for the iPhone 5, the BubbleScope claims to be better than any smartphone camera.
The new iPhone 5 case is available with a BubbleScope pack, or separately, so that existing 4/4S users can upgrade their case without needing a new camera.
A Samsung Galaxy S3 case, as well as a BlackBerry BB10 solution, is also on the way, but not content with only appealing to the smartphone market, BubblePix is also planning to release a case for the iPad 3 in 2013.
"The higher capability of the cameras in these handsets, paired with our high quality glass optics, simply mean better pictures for our customers," said Lawson.
"We also now have a retail price below Ł50 and we hope that as a result, even more people will be able to discover the magic of personal 360 imaging."

Apple is now taking orders for it new iMac, which was unveiled last month.
This latest device offers an ultra-thin profile incorporates Intel Core i5 or i7 processors along with 8GB of RAM.
However, Apple has managed to squeeze these high performance components in to a housing that’s just 5mm thick. In addition the redesigned widescreen display apparently offer 75 per cent less glare than previous models.
It also utilises a hybrid model of storage, which Apple ostentatiously calls the Fusion Drive, which is a 128GB solid state drive running alongside a one or three TB spindle drive.
The 21.5-inch version of the new iMac is priced at Ł1,099 and the 27-inch model is priced at Ł1,499.

Apple’s iPhone 5 is now available in the US contract-free, besides the standard two-year contract option.
The unlocked iPhone 5 will be priced at $649 for the 16GB version, $749 for 32GB and $849 for 64GB. Both the black and the white model will be available.
Shipping time is currently estimated at one week, while consumers will be limited to a maximum of two purchases.
Meanwhile, Apple has acknowledged that unlocked iPhone 5s will be GSM-only, which means that they will support AT&T and T-Mobile in the US, but will not work on CDMA bands.
Furthermore, 9to5Mac’s sources have hinted that Apple could begin selling the unlocked iPhone 5 at its retail stores within the next week.

"Imagine treating your phone like a piece of paper. Roll it up. Drop it. Squish it in your backpack. Step on it — without any damage. Researchers are working on just such handsets — razor-thin, paper-like and bendable. There have already been prototypes, attracting crowds at gadget shows. But rumors abound that next year will see the launch of the first bendy phone. Numerous companies are working on the technology — LG, Philips, Sharp, Sony and Nokia among them — although reports suggest that South Korean phone manufacturer Samsung will be the first to deliver. Samsung flavors smartphones with so-called flexible OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, and is confident that they will be 'very popular among consumers worldwide.' Their screens will be 'foldable, rollable, wearable and more, [and] will allow for a high degree of durability through their use of a plastic substrate that is thinner, lighter and more flexible than conventional LCD technology,' says a Samsung spokesperson.'
