Samsung has lifted the lid on two new smartphones prior to the upcoming MWC 2013 show in Barcelona later this month, Mobile Magazine has reported.
The first of the new devices arrives in the form of the Galaxy Express; a 4G LTE-enabled device, which will go on-sale by the end of June.
Aimed primarily at ‘the young social explorer’ the device doesn’t pack quite the same punch as the Galaxy S III, yet it does come with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.5-inch screen and runs on Android’s Jelly Bean operating system.
The Galaxy Express will also feature a five-megapixel camera and a 1.3-mega-pixel front facing camera.
Meanwhile, the Korean manufacturer has also revealed its XCover 2 smartphone, which is designed to be water resistant for up to half an hour to the depth of one metre. Its rugged design will also render it sand and dust proof.
There is currently no release date set for the XCover 2, but it has been revealed that it will run on a 1GHz dual-core processor and has a four-inch screen.
The news follows lasts month’s reports that Samsung will forgo the MWC 2013 show in Barcelona to unveil its new Galaxy S IV smartphone in March or April.

For the ninth consecutive month, Samsung has held on to its crown as the UK’s most popular smartphone, after claiming top spot in uSwitch’s January top ten with its Galaxy S III handset.
Based on sales and web searches, uSwitch found that Samsung not only occupied first place for the month of January, but also second and third with the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy S II respectively.
Elsewhere, Nokia found four of its smartphones in the top ten, with its Nokia 100 and C2-01 completing the top five and its Lumia 800 and 610 taking eighth and ninth place.
The final two spots were taken by Apple, with the 16GB version of its iPhone 5 in seventh and the 16GB iPhone 4S in tenth.
Ernest Doku from uSwitch, said: “After December’s mobile top ten, which read like a smartphone Santa wish-list, it’s been all-change in January. The UK’s loyalty to brand Samsung is unwavering, but beyond that we’ve seen customers shaking-up the rankings, leaving Apple’s 4S for dust in favour of offerings from LG and Nokia.
“With the launch of a revamped BlackBerry in the full-touch flagship Z10 and Nokia’s Lumia 620 looking to disrupt the affordable end of the spectrum, expect some significant movement in the coming weeks – not to mention major smartphone announcements amidst February’s Mobile World Congress.”

The Simpsons: Tapped Out game generated over $23m.
EA has released non-GAAP financials for its fiscal Q3 ending December 31st 2012, claiming it was the number one global iOS games publisher last year. Indeed, The Simpson: Tapped Out generated revenues of $23m, making it one of the highest grossing games on the Apple platform in the period.
Revenue for the studio's mobile games and services – including handheld consoles – hit $100m, an 18 per cent year-on-year increase.
Over the past year the firm has reiterated its focus on mobile and digital games, saying freemium will become 'the norm' and that 'mobile will push console gaming into a niche'. With that in mind, EA will likely be pleased that the Origin digital games portal now has more than 39m registered users, with 17m from mobile devices.

In light of Wednesday's BlackBerry 10 launch, new data from ABI Research predicts that more than 20 million of the avant-garde devices will be in active use by the end of 2013, with Windows Phone handsets reaching more than twice the usage at 45m actives.
The global total of installed smartphones will hit 1.4bn by the end of the year, with Android securing a 57 per cent market share and iOS bagging 21 per cent.
In terms of tablets, the market is expected to 268m actives, as iPad continues to lead with a 62 per cent share compared to 28 per cent for Android. The annual growth rate on 2012, however, will be 125 per cent for tablets ahead of 44 per cent for smartphones.
Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst, said: "2013 should be seen as relative success for both Microsoft and BlackBerry. For the end of the year, we expect there to be 45 million Windows Phone handsets in use, with BlackBerry 10 holding an installed base of close to 20 million. Microsoft will also have 5.5 million Windows-powered tablets to show for it.
"The greatest fear for both Microsoft and BlackBerry is that the initial sales of their smartphones will disappoint and thereby kill off the developer interest, which then would effectively close the window of opportunity on further sales success. Our view is that the installed bases of this scale would be large enough to keep these two in the game. It will definitely also help that both firms have actively kept the developers’ interest in mind while designing and rolling out their platforms."

Data from Q4 2012 has revealed that for the first time ever, Apple overtook Samsung as the top US mobile phone maker.
Strategy Analytics stated that following its debut of the iPhone 5 in September last year, Apple shipped an estimated 17.7 million handsets in the US, scoring a market share of 34 per cent.
Meanwhile, Samsung slipped into second place, shipping 16.8 million devices with a market share just shy of its arch rival, managing 32 per cent.
Both firms showed healthy gains on the previous year however, with Apple building from the 25 per cent market share it held in 2011.

To give the Mars Rover Curiosity the brains she needs to operate took 5 million lines of code. And while the Mars Science Laboratory team froze the code a year before the roaming laboratory landed on August 5, they kept sending software updates to the spacecraft during its 253-day, 352 million-mile flight. In its belly, Curiosity has two computers, a primary and a backup. Fun fact: Apple'siPhone 5 has more processing power than this one-eyed explorer. 'You're carrying more processing power in your pocket than Curiosity,' Ben Cichy, chief flight software engineer, told an audience at this year's MacWorld.

PlayJam's Android-powered portable console successfully funded more than six times over
The GameStick Kickstarter campaign wrapped up today, as PlayJam's proposal for an Android-powered console garnered a total of $647,658 in funding from 5,691 backers. When it launched January 2, the GameStick goal was to raise $100,000.
Like the similarly Kickstarted Ouya, GameStick is an Android-powered console intended to bring the Google operating system to the TV console market in an open fashion. It also features an Amlogic 8726-MXS processor, WiFi and Bluetooth functionality, 1GB of DDR3 memory, 8GB of NAND Flash memory, and its own wireless controller, which also houses the diminutive GameStick itself when not in use.
GameStick is expected to ship in April. The basic console and controller combo will sell for $79.

You still can't touch an OUYA. Not until March, at the earliest, and that's only if you're a Kickstarter backer. However, one lucky group of folks already has access: game developers. Those among us who shelled out $700 -- as well as the 10 lucky studios who won that contest -- got an early jump on a pre-rooted OUYA dev kit, while those of us who dropped $95 (or more) are left in the lurch. Of course, those early units aren't exactly the couch-friendly consoles we expect to arrive in a few months, but they are representative of the final hardware.
And let's face it -- the OUYA is important. A crowdfunded, extremely inexpensive, open-source game console? That's not exactly the standard (heck, Sony's PlayStation 3 debuted with a $500 baseline). The OUYA is essentially taking the low-cost / high-performance aspect of mobile gaming and moving it into a TV-friendly space, and that concept has even spawned some imitators (the likes of which we'll assuredly see more).
But what do we know about actually using the OUYA? Beyond basic specs and a sporadic showering of images, we've never actually touched the thing. With that in mind, we asked a trio of developers who've spent the last month with their dev kits how they feel about the console thus far, and we've compiled their thoughts below. One month out, how does the OUYA dev kit stack up for developers? Let's find out!

"It has been over six years since Apple introduced the iPhone. Millions of apps have been written for the platform in that time, with collective downloads into the billions. Apple's App Store is a thriving marketplace with a huge amount of software available, except Microsoft Office. There's a version of Office for iOS supposedly in the works, but Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer threw cold water on the idea when asked about upcoming events for the Office suite after launching the new Office 2013 / Office 365 products earlier this week. Revenue sharing is reportedly a major sticking point. Microsoft is trying to push people towards yearly subscriptions with Office 2013 and Office 365, but Apple requires a 30 percent profit share on sales of any app in their store. Microsoft reportedly isn't thrilled at the idea of sharing that much revenue. It's ironic — when Bill Gates agreed to port Office to the Mac nearly 20 years ago, it was seen as a lifeline for the beleaguered manufacturer. Now, Microsoft is knocking on the door of Apple's business and Cupertino seems disinclined to answer."

Whenever one of the big console manufacturers comes up with a new design idea, you can bet your bottom dollar that a Chinese clone will appear shortly afterwards. Just as the PlayStation Vita was shamelessly copied by the catastrophically poor Droid X360, the Nintendo Wii U GamePad has been shamelessly ripped off by Shenzhen-based JXD.The result is the S7300 Gamepad 2, an Android 4.1-powered 7-inch tablet device running an ARM-based Amlogic 1.5GHz chipset, packed with 8GB of internal storage and - most importantly - armed with an array of dedicated gaming controls which make the product look like the Wii U GamePad's slightly thinner cousin.JXD isn't the first company to hit upon the idea of physical gaming inputs on an Android device, of course - Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play was the early trend-setter, and since then we've also seen the disappointing Archos GamePad and the aforementioned Droid X360, while JXD itself seems to have an entire range of its own Vita/PSP knock-offs. The undesirable reputation of Chinese hardware may lead you to assume the worst, but amazingly the S7300 is a long way off being a complete disaster - although it does comes with a few unfortunate shortcomings which sully the experience ever so slightly. From the front, the S7300 certainly looks awfully similar to Nintendo's revolutionary controller. The arrangement of the buttons is practically identical, but the larger 7-inch screen (which is capacitive rather than resistive) is a welcome change. Around the edge of the unit there's a faux-metal plastic strip, calling to mind the white iPhone 4. The back of the device is practically flat, and eschews the ergonomic bulges present on the Wii U GamePad - something which ensures that the S7300 remains as portable as possible. Overall, build quality is pleasing - everything is fashioned out of plastic as you might expect, but aside from a little movement on the front of the tablet, nothing feels as if it's going to fall apart.

via http://ax86.patrickaalto.com/ablog.html
I have managed to work quite a bit on ax86 during the past two weeks. Here is a list of the more inportant changes I have managed to implement:
- Better file system support. Since the EXT3 file system used in linux is case-sensitive, my file routines from DSx86 (which only supported FAT file system) had problems handling files that were not in all capital letters. I improved my file routines so that if a requested file (which in the internal DOS routines is always in all upper case) is not found from the file system, ax86 scans the directory, converts each found file to upper case, and then checks if this is the correct file. This will of course take much more time than directly accessing the file, so it is still a good idea to actually have all file names in all upper case.
I still have a problem with the directory scanning routines. Currently I re-open the directory and skip a number of files for every DOS FindNext call, when I think that a better and faster approach would be to open the directory once on the FindFirst call, read all the files into a memory buffer (perhaps a linked list), and then use this linked list when DOS calls the FindNext routine. The current system is very slow with directories that contain hundreds of files, and also causes problems when deleting files. Every time you do a DEL *.*, the current system deletes only HALF of the files (because a file that the routine skips over has already been deleted, it skips over the NEXT file instead of the CURRENT file). So this still needs to be changed, but still the new file system support now allows me to test much more games.
- AdLib audio support. This is what I spent the previous weekend on. I was able to mostly use the AdLib emulation routines from DSx86 (where the emulation runs on the ARM7 processor), but instead of using 9 separate hardware audio channels (with 9 separate sample buffers) I needed to change my code so that it mixes the output of the 9 AdLib channels to a single buffer which is then sent to the Android OpenSL system for output. This was relatively easy to do, and I managed to get audio out pretty soon, but the quality was very poor.
It turned out that in order to get rid of the clicks and stuttering of the audio, I needed to increase the buffer size to 2048 samples! In DSx86 I had a buffer size of 64 samples, so this was a major change to the code. In DSx86 the small buffer allowed me to handle the AdLib note commands between buffer fills and still not cause any audible problems with the note timing. The audio latency caused by the AdLib buffer filling was only around 2ms, while now with the 2048-sample buffer the latency is 64ms. Such a high latency causes very audible problems when handling note events only at 64ms intervals. Thus I needed to add a time stamp for every AdLib note event, and then interleave the buffer filling and note event handling so that the notes get handled at their correct relative times. This fixed most of the audio problems, but of course does not get rid of the actual latency, which is quite noticeable when a game plays sound effects with AdLib audio. I don't think there is much that can be done about this, though.
- Last weekend I also ordered an IVSO® Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard Case For Google Nexus 7 Tablet from Amazon, which then arrived already on Tuesday via DHL (quite a fast delivery considering I ordered it via Free SuperSaver Delivery option)! Some reviews on Amazon mention that it does not have a Tab key, but at least my version does, so it is quite a good match to ax86. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday evenings coding support for a Bluetooth keyboard into ax86, so now controlling games is much easier and simpler than using the on-screen virtual touch keyboard. This also meant that my improving the inbuilt touchpad keyboard went down in my TODO list priority order. :-)
- On last Thursday I then decided to order a Raspberry Pi computer, as I have been toying with the idea of porting DSx86 to it as well as to Android. It arrived on Friday, and I could not resist the temptation to start working on it immediately. Thus I began to experiment with porting my current ax86 version to it. The Friday evening was spent in an attempt to create my own Makefile system to compile ax86 (or rpix86 as I decided to call it), but after miserable failures and considerable frustration (it turns out I am really NOT a Makefile guru!) I decided to copy the Makefile system from Nintendo DS DevKitARM pretty much as-is, as it seems to work nicely and I am familiar with it. Using that I got practically all the code to compile on Friday, but the hardware-specific stuff was still missing, so it did not actually run yet.
I continued this work on Saturday, and finally by Saturday evening I was able to get 4DOS to start up inside rpix86 on Raspberry Pi! I still don't have any input (like keyboard) support on the Raspberry Pi side, so I just adedd a frame counter that exits the program after a few seconds, but still it was nice to see that I can use pretty much the same code for both Android and Raspberry Pi. From now on I think I will work on those two versions side by side, as I added some compile defines to places where I need to do things differently between those two, and most of those places are in a single source code module which contains the native interface.
It also looks like I will be able to do some development things (like using a cycle counter to help me optimize some routines) more easily on the Raspberry Pi than on Android. Eventually I will probably want to add some processor-specific optimizations to my code, so that will cause differences between the versions (since RPi has ARMv6 and modern Android devices have ARMv7 processors), but for now I can work on both at the same time.
Next I will probably spend some more time on the Raspberry Pi side to get it at the same level with the Android version (namely to get keyboard and AdLib support working), after that I need to add mouse support and floating point support to both, as those are the things that currently limit the number of games I can test on ax86/rpix86. Then I will need to add SoundBlaster digital audio support, implement the missing graphics features, and so on, so there is still quite a bit of work ahead before the eventual public release.

Apple's flagship smartphone recorded a disappointing January in UK sales, whilst Samsung dominated the top three.
Data released from price comparison site uSwitch revealed that Samsung's Galaxy S3, S2 and the mid-range Galaxy Ace took the UK's top three spots – all outselling the iPhone 5.
Even more surprising is the positioning of Nokia's Symbian-based Nokia 100 and C2-01 handsets, which placed at fourth and fifth respectively in UK sales.
Both of the entry-level devices outsold Nokia's flagship devices, the Windows Phones based Lumina 800 and 610, which placed down in the list at eighth and ninth.
Apple's iPhone 5 placed at just seventh on the list, suffering a steep decline from the third place it managed back in October when the list initially launched.
Whilst sales of the iPhone have continued to decline, Samsung's Galaxy S3 has continued to see strong demand in the UK, fighting off competition and maintaining the top spot of the list since October.
Apple will no doubt be concerned to see it's flagship device outsold by its closest rival – not just by Samsung's own flagship Galaxy device, but both its older and budget devices too.
Even more troublesome for the US firm is the similar decline of its iPhone 4S, which has tumbled from being the UK's second highest selling device in October 2012, down to tenth on last month's list.
"The UK's loyalty to brand Samsung is unwavering, but beyond that we've seen customers shaking-up the rankings, leaving Apple's 4S for dust in favour of offerings from LG and Nokia," said Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.

This time last year Nokia was rumoured to be selling its luxury phone brand Vertu. The hearsay turned out to be true some six months later, though the Finnish firm retained a ten per cent share.
Vertu tells Android Authority that it will make an official press announcement on February 12th regarding its 'strong product road map,' but we've got some good old-fashioned conjecture for you to sink your teeth into in the meantime.
The word from Blog of Mobile is that Vertu will launch its first ever Android-powered smartphone this month, the Vertu Ti, moving on from Nokia's defunct Symbian OS.
The Ti is expected to run on Ice Cream Sandwich, and sport a dual-core Snapdragon S4, 800 x 480 pixel display, and 1,250 mAh battery.

Software originally developed for Linux in development for phones, tablets
Wine, an emulator which was designed to allow the use of Windows programs in a Linux environment, is coming to Android - with an early build of the code being given a public airing at FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) in Brussels.
According to Phoronix, which ran the original story, Wine for Android is still very much in the early stages and was shown running on a Mac emulating an Android environment itself, which had a very limiting effect on performance.
Nonetheless, the project is being worked on by Alexandre Julliard, who created the original Wine, so is in good hands. Should the project come to fruition, it could have wide-ranging ramifications for devices running any version of Android, such as smartphones or the coming Ouya micro-console.

Vodafone's British division has been shy to embrace Windows Phone much at all in recent months. There'll be no such reservation as of February 6th, when the carrier starts offering a wide array of Windows Phone 8 devices. HTC's Windows Phone 8X and 8S will ship in subdued colors, while the (partlyexpected) Lumia 620, 820 and 920 will be available in livelier hues. We've yet to hear about pricing -- and there's no mention of Samsung's ATIV S, for completists -- but the launch remains good news for UK residents who want to try Microsoft's approach to smartphones without leaving the Red Dot network.

[Adam Outler] tipped us off about a cross-platform Android hacking suite he’s been working on. The project, which is called CASUAL, brings several things to the table. First and foremost it breaks down the OS requirements seen on some hacks. It can perform pretty much any Android hack out there and it doesn’t care if you’re using Linux, OS X, or Windows.
We’ve embedded two videos after the break. The screenshot seen above is from the first clip where [Adam] demonstrates the package rooting the Oppo Find5 Android phone. He then goes on to show off the scripting language CASUAL uses. This layer of abstraction should make it easier to deploy hacking packages, as CASUAL handles all of the underlying tools like the Android Debug Bridge, fastboot, and Heimdall (an open source Odin replacement which brings the low level tool to all OS platforms) . The second video demonstrates a Galaxy Note II being rooted, and having a new recovery image flashed.

What's black and white and pink all over? Well, not too long ago, the answer to that was the Droid RAZR M. As of today, however, Motorola's nearly bezel-less Jelly Bean handset will also be pretty in platinum. Available as a special edition for Best Buy, the Verizon-locked device has been given a steely makeover, but that's not to say the M's been scrubbed of all its flair. Turn the phone on its side and you'll note its hardware keys now pop with a blue hue. Apart from the cosmetic overhaul, not much else on the 4.3-inch device has changed. So, if you're still game for a solid Android mid-ranger, you can snag this freshly embellished phone for $50 on a two-year contract at the source below.

Robert Peckham takes a look at whether the current roster of Apple products is still capable of dominating the competition – with surprising results.
My last column raised some points about how Apple’s current management might not be steering the future path of the technology giant. Nothing I said was new, or particularly different to what other commentators have already written about, but it certainly generated some feedback.
So, I decided that instead of just hearing from everyone about the viable alternatives to Apple’s products, I thought I’d take a closer look and feel for myself.
The iPod Touch is still pretty unbeatable for features and sheer gorgeous design, but the new raft of Android-powered MP3 players from Samsung, Archos, and most recently Sony, make the conformity of Apple’s iTunes look very constricting indeed.
How about iPhone? The latest Android phones compete admirably against Apple and iOS. The number and variety of apps still has a long way to go to match Apple’s armoury, but each passing day sees Google edging closer to surpassing Apple’s domination of the smartphone market, and having used a Samsung Galaxy for a week, I can now see why Apple is worried.
iPad? I was so impressed with the Samsung phone that I borrowed a Galaxy tablet, and was loaned a Google Nexus 10. Apps apart, I really wonder why so many people are spending all that extra money on iPads.
Mac? Well this is where Apple should really be concerned. The MacBook hardware designs are gorgeous, but Sony, Toshiba, ASUS and Samsung all have very credible and far cheaper models. Is there an alternative to Apple’s iMac? Well, yes, from Dell primarily, but what used to set Apple apart was the Mac OS, and this is where Apple needs to really start worrying, because Microsoft is fighting back.
With Windows 7, Microsoft came pretty close to catching up with Mac OS X, but Windows 8 has stunned me, as I know it has for many other Apple users who were convinced that Microsoft would never have a truly viable alternative to the Mac OS.
Microsoft has achieved what Apple have been working towards for the past three years – a totally integrated operating system that works the same way on full-size computers, portable devices and mobile phones.
What follows is a sentence that I never believed I would see myself ever typing, but the extraordinary redesign of Windows that Microsoft has now unleashed really puts it into Apple’s league for ease of use, logic and simplicity.
Apple has announced the next release of Mac OS X, v10.9, will be called Lynx, and will be released sometime next spring; whether it will put it back ahead of Microsoft Windows, we’re going to have to wait and see.

Samsung has unveiled more handsets in its flagship Galaxy range. This time it's two new dual-SIM budget phones aimed at the youth market.
First up is the Galaxy Young, which has a 3.27-inch 480 x 320 resolution LCD, 1GHz processor, 768MB or RAM, 4GB internal memory, microSD card slot, 3MP camera, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Galaxy Fame features a lot of the same specs, but has a slightly bigger display of 3.5-inches, a 5MP camera, and oddly, only 512MB of RAM.
“Completing the smartphone experience, the Galaxy Young and Galaxy Fame come preloaded with Samsung Game Hub Lite, which allows easy access to fully optimised, best in class games for these devices. Samsung’s device management software, S Cloud, provides safe and simple syncing, back-up and storage options for information such as contacts, bookmarks, and SMS,” said Samsung.
Pricing and availability for both handsets has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected that they won’t arrive until after MWC at the end of the month.
It seems Samsung is covering every single market it can think of with its Galaxy range. The firm recently announced the Galaxy Express – aimed at ‘young social explorers’, as well as the Galaxy Xcover 2 – a phone designed to endure harsh weather conditions.

New smartphone released in partnership with Microsoft.
Chinese manufacturer Huawei has joined forces with Microsoft to introduce a customised version of the Ascend W1 smartphone exclusive to Africa.
The two firms have teamed up in a bid to offer cost-effective smartphones to the continent, with the Huawei handset available for just $150.
Initially, the phone will only be on sale in seven countries – South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Angola and Morocco. “Our aim is to be the most affordable Windows phone in Africa," said Gustavo Fuchs, director of Microsoft Windows Phone division in the Middle East & Africa.
Africa is now the world's fastest-growing region for smartphones, with an average sales growth of 43 per cent a year since 2000.
"Africa's mobile market continues to grow robustly, driven by competition among mobile operators, the availability of new data services and strong economic growth on the continent," said Matthew Reed, principal analyst for Africa and the Middle East at Informa Telecoms & Media.
"And substantial opportunities for further growth remain, because the rate of mobile penetration in Africa is the lowest among major world regions and fixed networks are under-developed or absent across much of the continent."

Developers will receive free BB10 smartphones as a sweetener to produce titles for new OS.
Games publishing platform Unity currently offers multi-channel development tools for desktop, web, consoles, and mobile, with the latter portion comprising Android and iOS.
Unity is now looking to strengthen its mobile division and has started work on a BlackBerry 10 plug-in. This will enable more than 1.5m Unity developers to publish games for smartphones running the OS, and also the PlayBook tablet once it can support BB10.
BlackBerry will provide Unity developers with BB10 smartphones to support the testing of games, while the two firms will run regular developer events in Europe and North America to stimulate solidarity.
David Helgason, CEO, Unity Technologies, said: "Unity developers have an extensive catalogue of incredible mobile games, many of which are award-winning.
"We’re excited to offer Unity developers easy access to the new powerful and rich BlackBerry 10 platform. We’re eager to provide them with another exciting avenue to have their games devoured by an audience hungry for entertainment."
A free beta version of the Unity BB10 add-on and free smartphone will be provided to a limited number of developers in spring, with a final release expected in summer.

US retailers, including Amazon and GameStop, line up to stock console
The $100 games console, Ouya, is headed to retail, its maker has confirmed today.
US retailers including Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy and Target will stock the Android-powered console, thanks to the consumer response to the device.
Ouya is due to launch publically in June, but Kickstarter backers are still expected to receive their console before it hits stores.
Ouya can be pre-ordered from its official website for $99.99. For that price, users get the console, one wireless Bluetooth controller, a power adopter (region specific), two AA batteries and a HDMI cable. Additional controllers can be purchased for $49.99.
Recently, Ouya’s controller was redesigned with some tweaks to improve its quality and responsiveness.

The developer of the popular Android app Moon+ Reader was surprised to discover this weekend that he is a filthy stinking pirate. Google informed him via an automated email that Moon+ Reader had been removed from Google Play because the app had switched to using pirate sites as the main sources of ebooks. Or at least, that's what LitRes claims, but when they complained to Google LitRes didn't tell the whole truth. What was really happening is that users of the app are enabling piracy, not the app itself. Thanks to the way Moon+ Reader is designed to let users share links to ebook sources some of the sources are indeed pirate sites (less than your average Google Search). In reality the app was no more a source of pirated content than your average web browser. What do you say when an ebook distributor's anti-piracy plan involves going after app developers rather than pirate sites? Something printable, IMO.

The beginning of another month marks yet another fancy pie chart on the Android Developers Dashboard consisting of the latest usage statistics. The Dashboard, which reports the percentage of users on each build of the OS based on Google Play Store traffic, indicates that a full 12 percent of Android owners are enjoying 4.1 Jelly Bean, while 29 percent are on Ice Cream Sandwich. This leaves a solid 45 percent of users still flaunting Gingerbread, and a mere 1.4 percent are taking advantage of the most recent build of Jelly Bean (Android 4.2) on a Nexus device. Diving a little deeper in the number crunching, it shows that 42.6 percent of all current Android users are sporting at least Ice Cream Sandwich or later. And to the 0.2 percent of you still clinging onto your Donut devices, we salute you.

If you like the very best, you'll be happy to hear that thebiggest capacity, most expensive iPad yet has now landed at the Apple Store online. US customers can pick from AT&T, Sprint or Verizon to power their 128GB LTE model ($929), although AT&T has a reduced waiting time of 1-3 days, compared to 3-5 business days for the other two carriers. Expect the WiFi iteration ($799) to arrive within three days -- that is, if you place your order at the source today.

As Apple continues to ready its newest iPad mini device, circulating rumours indicate it well feature the firm's Retina Display.
BrightWare reported the news, with its Taiwanese sources suggesting that the 7.9-inch screen to be used on the new device is already in production.
Taiwan-based Apple suppliers AU Optronics are said to be piloting the production of the iPad mini 2.
Much attention has been given to the device's rumoured display, which is said to offer a resolution of 2048x1536 and pixels density of 324ppi.
Whilst Apple is no doubt busily preparing a new addition to its traditional iPad range, which is likely to feature an improved display of its own, the rumoured resolution of the new iPad mini would give the device a higher quality screen than Apple's other products.
If Apple is indeed working on a 7.9-inch iPad mini, which features the high-quality Retina Display of its other devices, it will certainly garner much attention from consumers on its release.

Brazilian authorities have denied Apple the right to use the iPhone trademark after it emerged that a local company had already registered the name.
According to Reuters, Gradiente Eletronica SA had registered the name ‘iPhone’ seven years before the device was actually launched.
As well as this, a spin off company of Gradiente, called IGB Eletronica, launched its own range of ‘iPhones’ at the end of last year. The Android-powered device is available in both black and white.
The Brazilian Institute of Intellectual Property will officially announce the decision on February 13th.

Intel Developer Blog: Softtalkblog reports on a new tool from Intel that helps you to translate your Apple iOS apps into HTML5
Legacy code is both an opportunity and a challenge. The opportunity exists if it’s possible to reuse the code to save time on future projects or to take an existing app into new markets. The challenge is that the code is often in a format that hinders that.
This isn’t a new phenomenon. It dates back to the start of the mass market games industry, when the same game would often be written twice from scratch for the Commodore and the Spectrum home computers. The market moves quickly today, though, and developers need to find effective ways to make their past code pay its way.
Many developers have created apps using Objective-C to target Apple iOS devices, such as the iPhone and the iPad. The problem is that this code is very specific to those devices, and cannot be used directly when developing apps for the Ultrabook, Androiddevices, or other non-Apple devices.
Developers want to have a presence on as wide a range of platforms as possible, to increase brand awareness and revenues and squeeze out competition, but it can often feel like they’re rewriting the same game over and over again, which is mind-numbingly boring.
Now, there is a new solution to this problem in the shape of a tool from Intel, currently in beta, called the Intel HTML5 App Porter Tool.

Starfish sells itself with this slogan: 'The next biggest thing is the next smallest thing: The world's first ever interactive iPhone and iPad mirroring device on your wrist.' The reality is that building products is hard. Building products with amazing feature sets is harder still. And, as the old saying goes, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. From the article: 'On Thursday morning when the show floor opened, Starfish’s booth was completely empty—no product, no marketing materials, not even any people. Come Friday, various permutations of representatives appeared at the booth intermittently. ... Saturday arrived, but the watch didn’t, at least not at first. After hourly promises of its imminent arrival, a single prototype of the Starfish watch appeared sometime before 1 p.m. My colleague Dan Moren got to the booth before I did, and the Starfish device wasn't working then. It had apparently worked, briefly, in some sense of the word "worked," when a reporter for TUAW visited the booth. ... The sole representative at the booth when I returned wouldn't give his name. What information he did give me didn’t mesh with what [the CEO] had told TUAW. ... "Why did he send you to man the booth if you can’t answer questions about the watch?" I asked the rep. "I’m done talking to you," he said, as he moved to position himself directly in front of my face. His expression had gone from brusque to combative. "Did you hear me? I’m done talking to you." My accompanying colleagues and I took the unsubtle hint. We left the booth

Ask around and chances are you can find a friend or family member that still has their early generation Kindle but doesn’t use it anymore. There are quite a number of different things you can do with them, and now there’s a single Launcher that works for all models of hacked Kindles. KUAL is the Kindle Unified Application Launcher.
Loading the launcher on your device does require that it be Jailbroken/Rooted, but that’s really the entire point, right? Once on your device the system is easy to configure. Menus themselves can be customized by editing the XML and JSON pair for each list. The screenshot on the left illustrates some of the applications you might want to run. We could see a VNC viewer being useful, and everyone likes to have games – like Doom II or the entire Z-machine library – on hand when they unexpectedly get stuck somewhere. But MPlayer? Does anyone actually use their ePaper device to watch videos?

User that tipped the Apple portal past the milestone will receive €10,000 iTunes Gift Card.
In a world where physical stores like HMV are being closed down, Apple's digital iTunes Store is booming and has reached the milestone for 25 billion songs sold.
The 25 billionth downloaded song was downloaded by Phillip Lüpke from Germany, and Apple assure he will receive a €10,000 iTunes Gift Card as thanks.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of internet software and services, said: "We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past ten years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world.
"Averaging over 15,000 songs downloaded per minute, the iTunes Store connects music fans with their favourite artists, including global sensations like Adele and Coldplay and new artists like The Lumineers, on a scale we never imagined possible."
iTunes boasts more than 26m songs and is available in 119 countries on devices including iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, and PC.

Smartphones running the open source Ubuntu operating system will be available to customers beginning in October 2013, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth told CIO Journal. Ubuntu will be available on a full range of devices, including desktop and tablet computers, potentially providing corporate IT executives a way to reduce the number of devices they purchase and manage, and would allow users to access all manner of corporate data through a single, pocket-sized device. 'You can share Windows apps to the phone desktop,' said Mr. Shuttleworth during a meeting in New York Tuesday."Jon Brodkin adds, "Canonical is taking community input on what the core applications (e-mail, calendar, clock/alarm, weather, file manager, document viewer, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter) should look like. The best aspects of community proposals will hopefully make it into Ubuntu phones when they finally hit the market sometime toward the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014. Take a look at the best designs Canonical has received so far.

Microsoft's Windows 8 powered tablets have beaten rival devices from the likes of Apple and Android to take the crown as the tablet of choice for work.
A study from Forrester polled 9,766 "information workers" and found that when given the choice, they would rather have a Windows 8 device than an iPad.
32 per cent of participants declared their desire for a Windows 8 machine, whilst just 26 per cent said they would prefer an iPad.
Meanwhile, Android flagged way behind at the back of the pack as just 12 per cent of those polled requested a device running Google's operating system.

The news should provide a handy boost to Microsoft, which recently revealed it shipped 900,000 Surfaces into the channel as of Q42012 and released its Pro edition of the device this month, which packs the full version of Windows 8 - a significant improvement over the RT version of the OS that ships with the standard Surface.
Forrester's report also concluded that Apple is on pace to win the next-gen smartphone war, with the firm's OSX platform powering 58 per cent of all tablets. And whilst Android beat out Apple in current smartphone use, 33 per cent of users selected the iPhone as their most desired device.

Gang of 12 youths ransacked 45 mobile stores in London last year.
Jail terms were this week handed out to a gang of 12 youths who robbed hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of stock from Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Vodafone stores last summer, Mobile News has reported.
The gang hit 45 stores across London, leaving members of staff distressed after violently removing smartphones and tablets from displays.
Collectively, the gang will serve eight years and eight months in jail, after all 12 submitted guilty pleas to one offence of conspiracy to commit burglary.
Police arrested the gang following an intelligence-led operation by the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit (NMPCU), supported by Croydon CID.
NMPCU detective chief inspector Robert Mahoney, commented: “These convictions should act as a warning to anyone involved in this type of activity that the MPS will robustly and swiftly deal with those who use intimidation to fulfil their greed.
“We have worked closely with key business partners, including Carphone Warehouse and local boroughs impacted by these offences, to obtain vital evidence and reduce the fear of crime and the professionalism of officers and staff will ensure this particular gang no longer represent a threat to Londoners.”
Carphone Warehouse said: “The safety and welfare of our employees and customers are our main priorities. After a series of robberies on our stores, we are pleased that the individuals responsible have been caught and will be sentenced in February. We will continue to work closely with the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit and the police to assist them with any further enquiries.”

Double Fine and Words with Friends co-creator Paul Bettner developing for $99 console
New versions of tny Android console Ouya will be released on a yearly basis, the company’s CEO has said.
Speaking to Engadget, Julie Uhrman said the firm would be following a strategy similar to mobile companies, and launch a new iteration every year.
Uhrman added the idea of releasing annually was to make sure it could include new faster processors, as well as taking advantage of the drop in price for various features.
Despite the plan to release annually, she stated that all future consoles would be backward-compatabile, with games tied to users in a similar way to digital distribution platform Steam – rather than tied to specific hardware.
“Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy,” said Uhrman. “There will be a new Ouya every year. There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3.”

CNET is reporting 'Discovered last night within a freshly jailbroken iPad: a set of buttons and code references for "radio," a feature found in iTunes on Macs and PCs, but not on the iPad or iPhone.' ... 'The buttons hint at Apple's much-rumored radio service, a product that will let people stream music much like they do on the popular Pandora service, but with deep ties to Apple's iTunes library.' ... 'The discovery follows a high-profile jailbreak of iOS 6.1, the updated system software Apple released just last week. A team of developers came up with a tool that gives users deep system-level access to do things like install applications from third-party app stores, change the look and feel of iOS, and add new software features.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has said that the iPhone has fallen behind on features and that Apple can’t take the loyalty of its fans for granted.
According to Phone Arena, Wozniak observed that Samsung had caught up with Apple because it was making great products.
“I am proud that we have such loyal fans. But this loyalty is not given, the need to have the best products is always there,” said Wozniak at the Businessweek Best Brand Awards.
“Currently we are in my opinion somewhat behind with features in the smartphone business. Others have caught up. Samsung is a big competitor, but precisely because they are currently making great products.”

Decision made as a result of low market share and high cost of modifying devices for local market.
BlackBerry has stated that it is to stop selling smartphones in Japan, citing low market share and high costs of modification for the local market as its main reasons, the Nikkei newspaper has reported.
According to the newspaper, BlackBerry’s market share has dropped from five per cent at its peak to a mere 0.3 per cent at the end of 2012.
However, while the manufacturer stated that its BlackBerry 10 based smartphones will not be launched in Japan, it did confirm that it will continue to offer support to its existing customers in the country.
"Japan is not a major market for BlackBerry, and we have no plans to launch BlackBerry 10 smartphones there at this time," the company confirmed in an emailed statement.
While BlackBerry may not be faring so well in Japan, the firm claimed earlier this week that it hadbroken its previous sales records in the UK and Canada with the launch of its Z10 smartphone.
Speaking yesterday (February 7th) BlackBerry president and CEO Thorsten Heins, revealed: "In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. In fact, it was more than 50 per cent better than any other launch day in our history in Canada.
"In the UK, we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone." he added.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to offer enhanced performance, along with new and upgraded features.
Sony’s Xperia range of smartphones are set to benefit from Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, which will offer users optimised performance and a host of new and upgraded features and applications.
At present, Sony Mobile is rolling out the Jelly Bean update to the Xperia T and Xperia V smartphones, while the Xperia TX is scheduled to be upgraded some time in March.
The update is designed to deliver more intuitive versions of Sony media apps, such as Walkman, Album and Movies, which will boast a new and improved library system. This will allow users to peruse their music, photos and videos in once single location.
Sony stated: "As soon as the Jelly Bean software is available for your device, you'll receive a notification in your phone," Sony states. "In most cases you'll have the option to download and update over-the-air, but in some instances the software package may only be accessible via PC Companion or Bridge for Mac."

OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman's promising a quick, simple approval process for games on her company's upcoming Android-powered game console, the OUYA. She told us in an interview this week:"It's similar to mobile: they'll submit their games, and we'll review for intellectual property infringement, and malware, and excessive pornography. But ultimately it's a quick review and you're in the storefront in one capacity or another."
That's not the only mobile model OUYA's following; Urhman already said the OUYA hardware will iterate on an annual basis, similar to the mobile market.
Despite the console's impending March launch to Kickstarter supporters, OUYA's yet to begin reviewing games for its storefront. "We literally just opened the ability for developers to upload their games into the store," Uhrman explained. The review process isn't too far off, however -- she's predicting a "middle-to-end of this month" timeframe. "We're building that right now," she said, when asked who's staffing that approvals process. "We are a start-up like any other start-up, it's just-in-time business."
The first consumer-ready OUYA consoles are planned for a March launch, with availability at retail to follow in June. The $99 console made a big splash on Kickstarter, eventuallyraising over $8.5 million when the original goal was a meager $950K.

We've clearly crossed a psychological barrier to digital media adoption when major content providers are going online-firston a regular basis. The BBC, despite its sometimes stuffy image, is revealing that it's just as eager to break with tradition: it's been given the go-ahead for a trial that will offer content on iPlayer before it appears on TV. The year-long test will offer up to 40 hours of regular BBC shows in advance, with no TV license fee required. While the selection of shows isn't yet public, the offering should be a bolder experiment than usual in showing whether or not iPlayer can serve as more than a catch-up tool or repository for exclusives. Let's hope it does -- we'd like to see online services treated as first-class citizens.

Thumbs twitching, in an attempt to get on that new Spotify beta? You might have had a frustrating morning. Multiple users are reporting that when trying to purchase or download apps on their Windows Phone they are instead receiving error code 805a0193. As handy as the code is, there's no further information about what is causing the problem. Unlikeprevious issues that seemed more localized, this current instance appears pretty widespread with reports coming from the US, and France amongst others. Are you affected? Let us know in the comments. In the meantime we've contacted Microsoft to see what's up.

Ouya developers should be in for a relatively simple approval process for submitted games, CEO Julie Uhrman tells our friends at Engadget. Once games are submitted, they will be checked for "intellectual property infringement, and malware, and excessive pornography," says Uhrman. "Ultimately it's a quick review and you're in the storefront in one capacity or another."
Uhrman says the internal review process should begin in the "middle-to-end of this month." With Ouya Kickstarter backers set to receive the first consumer Ouya units in March, let's hope the turnaround is as quick as Uhrman implies. Assuming it is, there's plenty of time for the Ouya to build up its library before the full retail launch in June.

A new report by Cisco reveals a remarkable growth in mobile traffic, driven by video.
The data shows that video accounted for over 50 per cent of all mobile traffic for the first time in 2012, and Cisco reports that this is set to rise to 66.5 per cent by 2017. This means mobile video traffic will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 75 per cent.
Overall global mobile data traffic is set to increase 13-fold between 2012 and 2017, with at least two thirds of traffic being video.
Cisco says that a lot of the extra traffic was diverted into fixed broadband infrastructures, mostly via Wi-Fi, which relieves congested cellular backhaul networks. The firm predicts that 46 per cent of traffic generated by smartphones will be offloaded onto broadband by 2017 and the figure for tablets will be 71 per cent.

Vodafone UK has warned users of Apple's iPhone 4S not to update to the firm's newest operating system amidst connection issues.
The provider has warned its customers via text that updating to the device's iOS 6.1 operating system could cause intermittent issues surrounding 3G and internet connectivity.
Whilst acknowledging the issues, Vodafone has shifted the blame towards Apple itself for the problems, whilst also stating that Cupertino is working on a solution.
However, Apple has yet to address or confirm any of the highlighted issues, or even state it is working to fix the issue.
Addressing the connectivity issues on its website, Vodafone said: "Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the internet."
"Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent."
"While Apple's investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4S should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed."
The iOS 6.1 update introduced a number of improvements to Apple's voice recognition software Siri, allowing users to purchase film tickets and purchase individual iTunes tracks.

Manufacturer to focus prepay sales on BlackBerry 7 and 7.1 handsets.
BlackBerry managing director for Europe Stephen Bates has revealed that the manufacturer will not be bringing any BlackBerry 10 prepay devices to market until 2014, Mobile Today has reported.
Speaking to Mobile, Bates said that BlackBerry would be focussing prepay sales on its BlackBerry 7 and 7.1 devices. “With BB10 we are trying to establish a new platform. We are intending to expand the portfolio towards the mid-tier in 2013 and entry-level phones will come next year.”
BlackBerry’s decision to release its touch-screen Z10 smartphone first was deemed a risky move by some, with many retailers and operators showing a preference for the Q10, which features the manufacturer’s trademark physical keyboard.
However, despite initial orders reflecting an air of caution, Jefferies analyst Peter Jefferies commented following launch: “We believe Carphone Warehouse is seeing widespread sell-outs, while O2, Vodafone, Orange and EE are seeing robust demand.”
Bates explained that the decision to release the Z10 first was in order to emphasise the innovative nature of the new operating system. He commented: “With the touch-screen handset, it was a case that that device was the best way to articulate the cinematic experience across the screen, the power of the applications, the power of browsing and showing off the innovation.”

Per-user monetisation rates set to grow rapidly on Android, says Gree's Anil Dharni
The top mobile games are earning four times more revenue than they were generating just a year ago, claims Gree’s SVP of studio operations.
Speaking to TechCrunch, Anil Dharni said that iPad had been a major factor in the rise in revenues, and also suggested that Android would continue to grow more rapidly and would see an improvement in per-user monetisation rates more similar to iOS.
“It’s four times and beyond in terms of revenue [compared to a year ago],” said Dharni.
Developers such as Clash of Clans and Hay Day developer Supercell are now raking in up to $1 million a day, while Mojang's Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been downloaded more than seven million times on iOS and Android.
Other companies such as King.com and Wooga have also seen their revenues rise since breaking onto the mobile scene.

The WSJ reports that Apple is "experimenting with designs for a watch-like device that would perform some functions of a smartphone, according to people briefed on the effort." An excerpt:The company has discussed such a device with its major manufacturing partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., one of these people said, as part of explorations of potentially large product categories beyond the smartphone and tablet. Apple's efforts come as companies have introduced various kinds of wearable gadgets, mainly designed to measure physical activity. More sophisticated devices face big technical challenges, but also are attracting investments from large technology companies. Foxconn, as Hon Hai is also known, has been working on a spate of technologies that could be used in wearable devices, one of these people said. In particular, the Taiwan-based company has been working to address the challenges of making displays more power-efficient and working with chip manufacturers to strip down their products."

Instead of booking an MC for your next karaoke party, take a look at [Paulo]‘s build that turns any iPhone into a karaoke machine.
There are thousands of YouTube videos out there of songs with lyrics – a much more advanced version of the mainstay of any karaoke get together, suitcase full of CDs and a video monitor. The only problem in turning these YouTube videos into a karaoke party is putting a drunken slob into the mix. [Paulo] recently solved this problem with a karaoke mixer that adds a microphone input to any analog audio feed.
But this is only halfway to a karaoke machine. To finish the build, [Paulo] created an amplifier (with a fabulous Manhattan-style PCB) for an iPhone’s audio output. The video output can be sent directly to a monitor, allowing for the full karaoke experience.
Since [Paulo]‘s karaoke mixer uses an XLR jack for the mic, it’s still possible to make karaoke worse by adding vocal and other miscellaneous effects.

Well, iOS 6.1 is still pretty young, but 6.1.1 is already hitting the airwaves. At least for some iPhone 4S owners that is. We've been able to confirm availability of the upgrade on multiple 4S handsets, but have not seen it yet on an iPod touch or any other iPhone model. The notification screen does specifically call out the update as fixing issues relating to "cellular performance and reliability" on the iPhone 4S, so it's quite likely the update will be for that device only. While better signal reliability would be a welcome upgrade, the bug we've heard the most complaints about is the seriously diminished battery life under 6.1. Unfortunately the pseudo-changelog that appears alongside the update make no mention of improved longevity. Other tweaks rumored to be landing with this version, including better Maps support in Japan, appear to have been pushed back to a later release like 6.2.

Less than two weeks after being announced as BlackBerry’s global creative director, pop star Alicia Keys apparently tweeted from an iPhone, d’oh.
It’s ok though, because the ‘Girl On Fire’ singer has fallen back on that good ol’ excuse of being hacked.
Fortunately for her, the ‘hackers’ were incredibly uninventive. The original tweet read ‘Started from the bottom now were here!’. Supposedly this was a reference to a new album by Drake. It was quickly deleted and followed by ‘What the h*ll?!!!! Looks like I've been hacked... I like @Drake but that wasn't my tweet :-(‘.
Now if I could hack into Alicia Keys' twitter account, I’d probably just post a stupid meme…

Over the air update coming to Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.
The Internet is teeming with reports this morning (February 12th) that an over the air Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update is now available to Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices.
While Google has yet to officially announce any such update, several users have taken to social media platforms such as Twitter and Reddit to spread the word of the new build.
The over the air update is thought to be aimed at fixing a bug related to Bluetooth audio streaming and provide optimised stability. However, with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie expected to arrive in May, the new update is thought to offer very little in the way of new features.
Last week it was announced that Sony would be rolling out Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for its Xperia range of smartphones. Sony stated: "As soon as the Jelly Bean software is available for your device, you'll receive a notification in your phone," Sony states. "In most cases you'll have the option to download and update over-the-air, but in some instances the software package may only be accessible via PC Companion or Bridge for Mac."

Internet search giant Google is set to pay Apple up to $1billion dollars in order to remain the default search engine in iOS devices, says Morgan Stanley.
Scott Devit, analyst at Morgan Stanley said in a new reportthe payment will ensure Google remains the default search provider on Apple's iOS devices, including the iPhone and iPad, throughout 2014.
It wouldn't be the first time Google paid a firm in order to be its default search provider, having notably made a similar agreement with Mozilla and its web browser Firefox.
Within the report, Devitt calculates that Apple will receive 31 per cent of Google's traffic acquisition costs in 2014, as the firm spends a total of $3.5bn to make its search engine the default in third party software.
Mozilla's payment of $400m pales in comparison to the $1 billion received by Apple, but the sheer popularity of Apple devices warrants a high price tag.
With the payment, Google not only limits the opportunities for rival firms within the default search provider race, but is also able to obtain valuable data from users when they access Google's search engine.

New report indicates that mobile traffic could grow 20 per cent if BlackBerry users switched to Apple or Android.
A new report from Actix into the effects of people, places and devices on mobile networks across the globe has found that BlackBerry users get consume 50 per cent more data than Android users and 30 per cent less than those on Android.
Aimed at emphasising the importance of accurate customer handset and location data for targeting network investments and improving customer experience, the report showed that the average smartphone user’s device is around 18 months old, with newer phones generating more data.
Apple subscribers were found to harbour the most ravenous appetite for data, getting through more data – and more data per session – than Android, while BlackBerry devices consumed less data than both of its rivals.
Neil Coleman, director of marketing at Actix. said: “If existing Blackberry customers switched to Apple or Android, mobile traffic would increase by 20 per cent. As early adopters move to the latest devices they put extra strain on the network and with more people switching from BlackBerry this will only continue."
Elsewhere, the report revealed that just one in five of locations are responsible for 80 per cent of network traffic, and a mere five per cent are responsible for over 50 per cent of traffic, with such high traffic areas typically less than 30-100m2 in size. Furthermore, 15 per cent of locations are responsible for 85 per cent of all customer experience problems.
Across an entire network, outdoor usage remains high, yet indoor usage of both voice and data is on the rise and, in many congested areas, dominates.
"Data rates drop off by as much as 50 per cent when users go indoors," said Coleman. "The area also affects the demand placed on the network, for example social media usage is highest in tourist areas, where data connections are busiest between 20:00 and 21:00. Many locations are busy a lot of the time, but areas with the highest levels of demand peak only for two short periods each day, such as transport hubs and central business districts. There's no blanket solution to this for operators."

After disasters (or to minimize expensive data use generally, and take advantage of available Wi-Fi), bypassing the cell network is useful. But it's not something that handset makers bake into their phones. colinneagle writes with information on a project that tries to sidestep a dependence on the cellular carriers, if there is Wi-Fi near enough for at least some users:"The Smart Phone Ad-Hoc Networks (SPAN) project reconfigures the onboard Wi-Fi chip of a smartphone to act as a Wi-Fi router with other nearby similarly configured smartphones, creating an ad-hoc mesh network. These smartphones can then communicate with one another without an operational carrier network. SPAN intercepts all communications at the Global Handset Proxy so applications such as VoIP, Twitter, email etc., work normally."

Julie Uhrman on the one big exception to company's hands-off approach to devs, says engagement will dictate curation
Ouya's pitch to developers centers on the console as an open platform, allowing them to release their games to a television-bound audience however they see fit, without restriction on the types of games they make or how they monetize their efforts. There is one notable exception to that, as Ouya mandates that all games on its eponymous platform support a free-to-try option.
Speaking with GamesIndustry International at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas last week, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman explained the limitation. Uhrman said the idea was attractive to consumers, as it puts the onus on developers to make an engaging experience that convinces players to invest their time and money with the title. However, she also expects it to handle some of the curation duties that come with running an online storefront. "It cleans up the app store," Uhrman said. "It removes the confusion between a paid app store and a free app store. We also think it cuts down on the copycat games, where you have games that look like each other and one is paid but the other is free and you don't know what to do. So we thought the easiest way to remove that and create a great experience for gamers and developers that was rewarding in their own right was to adopt this free-to-try model."
Beyond that, Ouya will handle some basic gatekeeping, making sure people aren't infringing on others' IP or releasing games with malware and pornography. However, the company won't be screening games out for quality.
"That's really up to the gamers and how often they play the game," Uhrman said. "What's really important to us in games on Ouya is engagement, and that's what's going to dictate to us what a great game is and what's going to lead our curation and merchandising plan."
Another part of Ouya's plan calls for periodic refreshes of the hardware. Uhrman said the company hopes to release new versions of the console every year that will take advantage of better and cheaper hardware. She also said each iteration of the hardware will be backward compatible. However, Ouya's open approach to hardware and reliance on standard components means the company has fewer protections against a better funded competitor muscling into the market and trying to offer essentially the same experience to consumers.
"From a hardware perspective, there's nothing defendable," Uhrman said. "We didn't build a custom chip, we took off the shelf components and just combined them in a different way. What's unique about Ouya is the business model, the fact that every single game is free to try, that it's open for every single creator, the fact that we're bringing games back to the television. But most importantly, we will win if we're able to develop a great relationship with developers and gamers where the best, newest, and most creative games are on Ouya."
At the DICE Summit, Uhrman announced two games she hoped would serve as examples of that. During her talk, she confirmed that Ouya will be the first television-based platform to play host to Double Fine Productions' Kickstarted adventure game REDS, and that Words With Friends co-creator Paul Bettner is bringing his upstart studio's first game to the console as well.

Sony's self-proclaimed "crazy" person, Chris Mahoney, on how to bridge the gap between console and mobile games
[h=3]Sony Computer Entertainment America[/h]us.playstation.com
On the eve of Sony's big announcement on February 20, widely expected to be the unveiling of the next PlayStation, a recent presentation provided some insight into Sony's thinking about the future of gaming. Chris Mahoney, director of emerging platforms for Sony Computer Entertainment America, spoke to an audience at the Appsworld conference in San Francisco last week about taking console gaming to mobile platforms.
"I'm considered one of the crazy people at PlayStation," Mahoney said. "It's my job to go out there and figure out what new area of business do we want to be in, and understand what it is the consumers want from those areas of business. I create what I call 'rebel alliances' within Sony, with people who can see the future of these new businesses."
Sony has made an important step in the direction of mobile gaming with its PlayStation Mobile program. "PlayStation Mobile is a new initiative we launched last year to bring the world of PlayStation to all PlayStation-certified devices, which includes the PS Vita, and includes Android devices like Sony Xperia tablets and phones, Wikipad, Asus, Sharp, and a bunch of different devices," Mahoney said.
The vast library of old PlayStation games brings classic console gaming straight to Android devices, but Mahoney is looking at the broader future of mobile gaming. "How do you bridge the gap between console and mobile gaming?" asks Mahoney. Sony has been considering this question for some time, he said.
"If I told you a couple of years ago that I was going to give you a screen and you were going to swipe your finger across it and you'd consider that fun, you'd have thought I was nuts"
Chris Mahoney
Revenue from mobile games is growing rapidly, and Mahoney wants to know what's driving that. "There are some obvious factors that we all know about," he pointed out. "One is that it's driven by new devices and platforms. The cost of distribution comes down, and we're able to try new business models that are further enhancing how fast this new market is growing."
Mahoney noted that new game types are also a factor. "If I told you a couple of years ago that I was going to give you a screen and you were going to swipe your finger across it and you'd consider that fun, you'd have thought I was nuts. But then games like Angry Birds come out and show you this is a lot of fun."
Beyond all of those reasons, though, Mahoney said the appeal of mobile games is "We all have these little moments of downtime, like when you're at an airport or waiting at the DMV." It's gaming as a snack, a comparison that others have made as well. "When you look at mobile gaming today, it feels a lot like eating a Twinkie. A Twinkie is something where you have a craving, and you eat it, and it gives you a little sugar rush, and you feel great, but immediately afterwards you feel like that wasn't a meal," Mahoney said. "Consumers are starting to tell us some of that."
In a nationwide survey Sony conducted of all kinds of mobile gamers, 89 per cent said mobile games are fun to play; 78 per cent said they are relaxing, and 76 per cent said they are replayable. But consumers are dissatisfied with mobile games, too; 36 percent said they are low quality, 49 per cent said they are bad graphically or narratively, and 76 per cent said they are mostly a waste of time.

"Consumers are saying they want to invest their time, not waste it," Mahoney said. "And this is where I think console companies come in. We have a rich heritage of actually providing meaningful game experiences. We've built a legacy of great graphics; we have really solid narrative."
Mahoney feels there's room for a variety of games. "Lots of people tell you mobile's going to kill consoles, but I don't really see it that way," Mahoney said. "What we see is it's just a new iteration on consoles; we think consumers will demand content from both ends of the spectrum. There will be really important experiences in mobile, and there will continue to be really important experiences in consoles. It's like how independent film-making didn't kill the Hollywood blockbuster."
"Consumers are saying they want to invest their time, not waste it. And this is where I think console companies come in"
Chris Mahoney
That's not to say that console games can just move right over to mobile platforms. "There is a real problem with putting console games on mobile phones; it's the device," Mahoney said. "Tablets are a little bit better, but all mobile devices have three main drawbacks: The screen size, the battery life, and where you play them. It can be sunny, too rainy, windy or noisy; it's hard to get into a console type game in that type of environment."
Sony wanted to know how to bring the level of mobile gaming up, so they surveyed people. "We asked people if they wanted God of War on a mobile phone, and they said 'Not really.'" said Mahoney. "Why not? They said they were really terrified that an amazing experience like that would kill their battery. They were also concerned that it was going to be really immersive and take lots of time. We heard this from a ton of people nationwide; they were worried about missing calls. It makes sense, because when we delved into why, people said 'My phone is a communications device, first and foremost.' Gaming is a secondary use case, and it can't cannibalize the communication capability."
"What people were saying is not that we have to fit these games into the device, but fit these games into how people use it," Mahoney explained. "People are using games during these little bursts of time. So we thought, what is a console game? A console game is ten 30-60-minute levels. Mobile games are like hundreds of levels that are three to six minutes, sometimes even less. What if we take the higher quality graphics, and the narratives that everyone is asking for, and we put it on a mobile phone and fit it into these little bursts of time. We took that back to consumers, and they said 'Yes, that's it exactly, that's what we want.'"
It wasn't that simple, though. "To deliver that level of game experience, to that many people, in a way where there's great quality but also enough quantity to keep them engaged, that's going to take a lot of work," Mahoney said. "We knew we couldn't do it ourselves. So we did what people would consider an atypical thing for a console company: We opened the platform. That was around the time we launched the PlayStation Mobile Developer program. You pay $99 a year, you have unlimited publishes on the platform, one global contract, and unified developer resources online. This is really revolutionary for console companies."
"A console game is ten 30-60-minute levels. Mobile games are like hundreds of levels that are three to six minutes, sometimes even less"
Chris Mahoney
The final piece of the puzzle was to give developers a good reason to put games on the platform. "There are plenty of open platforms, so we knew we needed something more," Mahoney said. "We have a big audience of gamers. We want to take the best games and elevate them. We want you to come in and feel that you're finding something that's relevant to you and high quality."
It's still early days for the PlayStation Mobile platform, and as mobile hardware power improves there will be more devices capable of providing higher-quality output. It's too soon to tell if this initiative will really have a big impact on mobile gaming. The interesting question is whether some of this can work in the opposite direction; can the flexible business models and ease of development make their way to consoles?
Sony does intend to bring some of that thinking back to the console business, from what Mahoney said. The technical aspects of Sony's soon-to-be-announced new console will be important, no doubt; exceptional graphics and other capabilities will intrigue developers and gamers alike. The competition for console games, though, isn't just about tech specs. Developers have been attracted to online and mobile platforms because of the ease of publishing, the fact that there's little or no bureaucracy to navigate for online or mobile games can be a deciding factor in platform development decisions. Innovations in the way Sony does business with developers may have as much of an impact on the success of a new console as any technical feature.

The Pokemon Company has quietly released an official Pokemon TV app offering a selection of free episodes of the Pokemon animated series.
The free app is available on iTunes and features a selection of episodes that can be instantly streamed.
The episodes are separated by region - Sinnoh, Johto etc - though not every episode is available, only a selection of 50 which will be rotated on a weekly basis.
The Pokémon movies will also feature from time to time on the app - for example, Pokémon The Movie: Kyurem Vs. The Sword Of Justice will be available for streaming from 15 to 18 February.
If you're having problems finding the app, be sure to search for Pokémon TV (with the accent above the 'e').

Is an Apple watch more than mere rumour?
News agency Bloomberg says sources close to Apple believe there are currently 100 product designers working on a wristwatch computer. Enough to suggest that this is a product firmly in the pipework and not just something being played with during a brainstorming session.
Apple isn't completely alien to the watch sector - it already produces watch bands that fit iPod Nanos (see picture above).
But the speculation mill suggests that this would be a somewhat more complex device, which might have iPhone or iPad-like functions such as showing users incoming text messages or app notifications.
It will almost certainly tell the time, you'll be pleased to hear.
The excitement around the possibility of the iWatch is yet another example of the Apple fandom getting a bit heated over products that don't exist yet (see 47 per cent of Americans want Apple product that hasn't been made yet).
Let's wait and watch and see...

It's also around 20 times more expensive than other smartphones too.
A recent rumour suggested luxury phone maker Vertu was releasing a €3,000 Android-powered Ti device this month, but €3,000 is actually reasonable considering that the Ti's official RRP is €7,900.
Yep, you read right, Vertu has revealed its 'pinnacle smartphone device' will cost the price of a new car/dream holiday.
The phone has a titanium base and a leather touch, while 'the largest sapphire crystal screen ever' measures at 3.7-inches and is 'virtually scratch proof and tested to be four times stronger than other smartphones in terms of impact resistance'.
The Ti will run on Android Ice Cream Sandwich and also sports a 1.7GHz processore, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, NFC, and 64MB internal memory.
Perry Oosting, president and CEO, Vertu, said: "Vertu Ti is our most significant product for a decade. The Android OS delivers a proven and intuitive environment for users while the design and craftsmanship of the handset remains uniquely Vertu. There is nothing else like it."
Presumably Oosting's last sentence is in reference to the price tag.

Gartner report also shows Apple and Samsung increased market share to take 52 per cent of global smartphone sales.
Global mobile phone sales reached 1.75 billion units last year, representing a 1.7 per cent dip on 2011 sales, a new Gartner study has revealed.
Smartphones led the way in terms of overall mobile phone sales, with Q4 of 2012 seeing record smartphone sales of 207.7 million units – a 38.3 per cent rise on the same period in 2011.
The study suggests that sales of worldwide smartphones to end users will be close to one billion units in 2013, while overall mobile phone sales to end users are predicted to reach 1.9 billion units.
“The last time the worldwide mobile phone market declined was in 2009,” said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. “Tough economic conditions, shifting consumer preferences and intense market competition weakened the worldwide mobile phone market this year.”
Q4 2012 saw Apple and Samsung strengthen their domination over the international smartphone market to 52 per cent from 46.4 per cent in Q3.
Samsung saw the year out at the top of the market in both global smartphone and mobile phone sales, notching up 64.5 million smartphone units - up 85.3 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2011.
In 2012, Samsung totalled 384.6 million mobile phones sales, of which 53.5 per cent (up from 28 per cent in 2011) were smartphone sales.
Meanwhile, Apple reached sales of 43.5 million units in the Q4 of 2012, rising 22.6 per cent year-on-year. In 2012, Apple totalled 130 million smartphone sales across the globe.
While the demand for iPhones in the fourth quarter remained strong, consumers’ demand veered toward the less expensive iPhone 4 and 4S models. The launch of the iPad Mini also presented users with a dilemma when deciding whether or not to upgrade an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S to an iPhone 5, or buy the new tablet.
Elsewhere, Huawei enjoyed a successful fourth quarter as it took third place among smartphone vendors for the first time. In 2012, the manufacturer sold 27.2 million smartphones to end users, representing a leap of 73.8 per cent from 2011. Both the Ascend D2 and Mate, which were announced at this year’s Computer Electronics Show (CES), are aimed at growing the firm’s brand perception as a premium product and increase its mobile phone margins. Gartner analysts said international markets are crucial for Huawei’s growth in 2013, as well as being able to improve its product mix to a higher tier.
“There is no manufacturer that can firmly lay claim to the No. 3 spot in global smartphone sales,” said Mr. Gupta. “The success of Apple and Samsung is based on the strength of their brands as much as their actual products. Their direct competitors, including those with comparable products, struggle to achieve the same brand appreciation among consumers, who, in a tough economic environment, go for cheaper products over brand.”
The fourth quarter also saw sales of Nokia handsets begin to rise, following a positive response to its Asha mobile phones and Lumia Windows Phone 8 models. However, this was not enough to prevent the firm from losing ground in the market, plummeting to an all-time low market share of 18 per cent.
Gartner's studyalso found that the dwindling demand for feature phones failed to pick up any momentum last year, with total sales dropping 19.3 per cent year-on-year; a trend that Gartner predicts will continue in 2013.

User reports of new Jelly Bean update rapidly surfacing.
Details of the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update, which is now available on Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices, are beginning to surface, with users citing new sounds and notification features as the most notable offerings.
Yesterday (February 12th) saw rumours of the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean rollout for Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10device run amok across social media platforms, such as Twitter and Reddit.
However, while no official update details have been divulged by Google, several users have noted that a range of new notification sounds and features are among the key improvements.
GSMArena has reported that the 4.2.2 update now offers users the ability to utilise notification screen shortcuts as toggles. While they still act in the same way as before, users can tap or hold shortcut buttons to enable or disable particular features, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Furthermore, a single tap is now all that is required to switch Airplane mode on or off.
Elsewhere, a new notification sound has been introduced that plays when the device is placed on a wireless charger, and a new low battery notification sound has also been added.

The iPad Mini and Nexus 7 are eroding the iPad's market share
The market share of Apple's flagship iPad will continue to shrink in the face of smaller tablets, estimates Citi analyst Glen Yeung. In an investors note obtained byCNet, Yeung noted that the iPad mini has already taken the larger iPad down a notch; after the iPad Mini's launch, fourth quarter sales of the iPad fell 9 percent and 29 percent in Japan year-over- year.
In addition, 7-inch Android tablets, including the Google Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and Amazon Kindle Fire, took 41.2 percent of the tablet market share in the fourth quarter, up from 12.6 percent in the second quarter. 10-inch tablets fell from 67.3 percent to 40.6 percent during the same time period.
"Beyond simply the overall share loss, the data reveals a particular slowdown in 10-inch iPad sales in mature markets," Yeung said. "After analyzing the data, we have new concerns about the health of the 10-inch tablet market and, absent any material innovations (we do not count a Retina Mini or lighter/thinner iPad 5 among these), we remain concerned about Apple's ability to maintain market share."
The smaller tablet size is also leading to a surge in magazine consumption from female subscribers, according to Hearst Magazines president David Carey. He explained that 10-inch tablets worked well for men, but women were not the biggest fans of the format, according to reporting by PaidContent. Carey said Hearst is seeing percent of its web traffic coming from mobile websites, even though tablets are only accounting for 3 percent of overall revenue. Hearst Magazines is the publisher of Esquire magazine and recently brokered a deal with NBCUniversal torebrand G4 Network as the Esquire Network.

Eric Chahi's seminal game work, Another World, is now available on BlackBerry 10 devices (so ... uh, those of you with a Z10, though it also works on PlayBook). And not just any version, but the 20th Anniversary Edition, which adds updated graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and some gesture controls. The game's one of several titles that publisher DotEmu is bringing to BB10, including notoriously difficult shooter R-Type. "Another World 20th Anniversary is our first title on Blackberry. It's currently available on Playbook and Z10, and in the upcoming weeks on Q10," DotEmu CEO Xavier Liard tells us. As for the future? "Of course we are considering bringing all our Android games to BB10, but the next game to be most likely released would be R-Type." Given that DotEmu also publishes Neo-Geo titles on Android, it's not a surprise that the company is also considering bringing those titles over, though there's nothing to announce just yet. "We can't say yet if it will be on BB10 or not as it is SNK Playmore decision," CTO Romain Tisserand says.
With Another World priced at $5 -- a dollar more than its iOS version -- we expect similar pricing across the board. But then again, we always hope it'll be less expensive to re-buy 20-year-old games. The price of nostalgia, eh?

OUYA and NVIDIA have a kind of love thing going on right now. The $99 Android-powered game console designed by Yves Béhar's fuseproject is powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 -- this much we already know. What we didn't know is that the folks at OUYA are working directly with a team of folks at NVIDIA on the project, and that NVIDIA is helping the company to max out its Tegra 3 processor for use on a console rather than a mobile (no battery dependency means the little chip can go much further than usual).
"The partner that we've worked the most with, that is incredibly supportive of developers, NVIDIA, they have multiple people on their team dedicated to our account," OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman told is in a recent interview. She was responding to a question regarding partnerships the company's forged to make OUYA a reality, such as the aforementioned involvement with Béhar's fuseproject studio. Despite the OUYA running Google's mobile OS, Uhrman said, "We haven't worked very much with Google." As for NVIDIA, however, the American chipmaker is going all in, helping the OUYA to be the, "best Tegra 3 device on the market," according to Uhrman.
That praise isn't all one-sided, of course; NVIDIA had praise to heap as well. "We have a dedicated team working with OUYA to ensure that Tegra 3's performance is being maximized. They've been amazing to work with," NVIDIA senior VP of Content and Technology Tony Tamasi told us. "The rich catalog of optimized and differentiated TegraZone games -- along with the work being done with developers -- ensures a flourishing ecosystem is in place and continues to grow." That support is unlikely to end with this year's OUYA. Uhrman said her company's console, unlike the big three console manufacturers, will launch anew annually, following the mobile model. And that model means beefier internals, such as NVIDIA's Tegra 4, announced just over a month ago at CES. In so many words, we very much expect NVIDIA and OUYA's lovefest to continue.

Tetris is timeless, but EA has still found a way to update the classic game for the 21st century: microtransactions. Tetris Blitz for iOS and Android is built around a two-minute Tetris round, in which players attempt to earn as many points as possible.
To help earn those points, you'll be able to buy power-ups, with new ones released weekly. New "Drag and Place" controls add another control option to the existing swipe-based scheme. And to further highlight that this is a 2013 game, players will also be able to compete on Facebook. It'll be released this spring on iOS, Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore.

HP is reportedly in talks to enter the Android tablet market with a host of new devices.
ReadWrite claims that the world's second largest PC maker in considering a move into the Android tablet market after holding talks with Nvidia, with the possibility of using the firm's upcoming Tegra 4 processor in a high-end device.
Nvidia's Tegra 4 is one of the first quad-core processors, which is based on ARM's Cortex-A15 design.
A potential Android tablet from HP using the chip would make the device one of the fastest on the market.
The move would signify a move away from Microsoft, with the firm already offering a number of Windows 8 based tablets, including the ElitePad900 and the Envy x2.
HP has previously struggled in the tablet market, with the manufacturer's TouchPad failing to generate strong sales.
ReadWrite's report also hints that the firm in weighing up a move into the Android smartphone market too.

Local company Gradiente Eletronica SA to face battle from Apple for iPhone brand name.
Apple is to challenge local Brazilian firm Gradiente Eletronica SA for the rights to its iPhone trademark in Brazil, following yesterday’s (February 13th) ruling that the Brazilian company had dibs on the name first, Reuters has reported.
Regulator Inpi ruled that Gradiente Eletronica SA owned the iPhone trademark, having filed its request to use the iPhone brand name in 2000 - seven years prior to the launch of Apple’s smartphone - but only receiving approval to use it in 2008.
However, Apple is now challenging the Brazilian firm to the rights for the iPhone trademark. This means that Gradiente has 60 days in which to prove to Inpi that it used the trademark between January 2008 and January 2013, on account of Brazil’s policy that brands must be developed within five yeasrs of being approved.
IGB Eletronica SA, a firm formed following the restructuring of Gradiente, launched its ‘iphone’ smartphone range in December 2012.
While comments from Apple and Gradiente haven’t been forthcoming, an Inpi spokesman stated that Apple could still take the case to court or settle out of with Gradiente.

February 14th, 2013, 23:45 Posted By: wraggster
Apple's iWatch will be so beautiful you'll want to cry. And it will keep time faultlessly by running out of power at exactly 4pm.
When I was a child I remember watching a charming animated film about hedgehogs.
Scientists were worried at how many of the little beasts were being run over, so they genetically engineered larger ones. Over time, they needed to make hedgehogs bigger and bigger, until eventually the spiny mammals were six foot tall and a danger to humans.
By this point, cars had begun using hover technology that made them glide one foot above the road. The scientists decided they needed to engineer hedgehogs that were, well, about their original size…
And so we come to Apple's much-rumoured new iWatch.
Lazy journalists like me are very fond of trotting out the observation that phones have cannibalised watches, with their stinky straps and their pathetic tiny faces (the watches, not the journalists).
Thanks to smartphones, no one wears stupid watches any more apart from Roger Federer.
But now it appears that Apple has had this amazing idea. What if, instead of the hassle of reaching into your pocket to get out your iPhone every five minutes, you had some kind of wrist-based device that could perform simple functions and alerts?
You could even tell the time with it.
I'm excited to see how this whole iWatch thing might pan out. Here's how I think it could go.
First Apple will prepare the way for iWatch by suing anyone who infringes their IP. Its lawyers will go aggressively after the BBC's SpringWatch programme, and Bill Oddie will spend the whole of 2014 in a high security Californian penal institution.
When iWatch ships, it will come in a beautiful box that is the work of 27 packaging engineers. The lid will sigh as you remove it.
You will take out the smooth and curved glass product (no physical buttons) and notice that the screen is blank. This is because your iWatch will not tell the time until you have registered and synced it with your iTunes account.
But be warned, iWatch will only sync with the the latest versions of MacOS. If your computer needs an upgrade you can buy one for £89. If your Mac is too old to support Mountain Lion you can buy a new laptop from just £699.
OK, so you've upgraded and synced. You are now ready to start telling the time!
The first thing you'll notice is that the iWatch doesn't have a minute hand.
Or numbers.
This is because minute hands and numbers are ugly and disrupt the majestic sweep of the hour hand. In time, you get used to it, like the Apple mouse without a right click or the phone with no removable battery.
Next step is to attach the strap. However, there isn't one. The good news is that you can buy a colourful magnetic strap at the Apple store for just £39.99.
This is an excellent investment, and will last you six months, after which time the iWatch 2 will come with a new connector that will not support the old strap. However, you will be able to buy an adaptor for £29.99.
The iWatch will work splendidly via Bluetooth with your other iOS devices. It will ping when you get a call, text or email. You can use it to control your music.
However, there may be some teething problems with telling the time. Be careful not to touch it on the left hand side or it may switch to local time in Peru.
Of course, some irrational consumers will object to the beauty and exclusivity of the iWatch. They'll look for alternatives that are more open and customisable. And ugly-looking.
Good news, Google and Microsoft are waiting in the wings.
The first Android watches will arrive in 2014. They'll be OK looking at cheap. But they will also be attacked by malware, and the time will get ****ed up. All over the world Galaxy S-Watch users will turn up for meetings at 3am.
Then Microsoft will re-enter the market (I say re-enter because MS already tried to kickstart the sector with SPOT watches, just as it was first into tablets. Oh, the tragedy of Microsoft).
The first M-Watch will be octagonal and half an inch thick. Its face will be blank and you will need a software licence to download compatible hands.
Occasionally, someone will ask you if you have the time and you will reply: "It's just coming up to 404 Error."
In the years to come, the market will mature and people will buy multiple devices using multiple smart watches. And rather like remote controls today, we'll find these devices piling up. And how we'll laugh as Granddad tries to turn on the Mozilla fridge with his Bada watch.
What a twat.
This is just scratching the surface of the social changes smart watches could bring.
She: "Why do you keep looking at your watch when I'm talking to you? Are you in a hurry?"
He: "No, I think you're great. In fact, I was actually trying to find naked pictures of you on Facebook."

Ditches $5 price tag for Real Racing 3.
EA's Real Racing 2 game for Android and iOS will currently cost players around $4.99 to download, while it also includes in-app purchases, daring users to part with more cash.
In two weeks time Real Racing 3 speeds onto mobiles, but EA has ditched a premium price tag to make the game entirely free to play, though the option to buy digital upgrades is still on offer.
The decision comes following EA's mobile revenue hitting $100m in Q4, with freemium title The Simpson: Tapped Out generating revenues of $23m via in-app purchases.
Speaking to CNET, Nick Earl, GM of EA's All Play label, said: "We looked at it closely, and the market was demanding games with this model. It's an opportunity to get it in front of far more people.
"The monetisation had to be unaggressive as opposed to overly harsh and tight. For those spending hours at the game, they will opt to spend a little money on the game. We think that's a fair exchange. We feel like it will do well and turn heads. There's a potential viral (factor) with a game that looks this good."

Claims it's going to snatch a 'bigger piece of the smartphone market pie'.
Opera has crossed the 300 million monthly user milestone, inclusive of all browsers across mobile phones, tablets, TVs, and PCs. It comes following last month'spartnership with Neomobile to introduce one-click operator billing to Opera Mini.
The browser firm says it will continue focusing on mobile and aims to become a leading service for Android and iOS, which will be achieved by moving to the open source WebKit engine that's currently used by its Apple and Google competitors.
Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, said: "300 million marks the first lap, but the race goes on. On the final stretch up to 300 million users, we have experienced the fastest acceleration in user growth we have ever seen. Now, we are shifting into the next gear to claim a bigger piece of the pie in the smartphone market."
Håkon Wium Lie, CTO of Opera Software, added: "The WebKit engine is already very good, and we aim to take part in making it even better. It supports the standards we care about, and it has the performance we need. It makes more sense to have our experts working with the open source communities to further improve WebKit and Chromium, rather than developing our own rendering engine further."
The 300m user base is up from reaching 200m back in July.

You can sometimes gauge a game console's short-term success based on its launch lineup; many of us know the pain of having to choose the least terrible game of a small bunch while we're waiting for a better selection. While we can't vouch for how the OUYA will fare for quality, Eddie at OUYA Forumhas done the legwork to prove that there won't be any problems with the Android console's quantity. He's checked with both OUYA and developers to confirm that there are at least 481 games headed to the fledgling system, as of this writing. The clear majority of these are smaller indie titles that won't dampen Sony's enthusiasm for next week, but that's not necessarily a problem -- the abundance mostly hints that there could be a few gems for early adopters, even if there's a lot of fluff.

A new report from IDC reveals that Android and iOS combined for 91.1 per cent of all smartphone shipments in Q4 2012.
Last year over 497 million Android phones were shipped, an increase of over 100 per cent on 2011. Apple managed to shift 135.9 million handsets.
"The dominance of Android and Apple reached a new watermark in the fourth quarter," said Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "Android boasted a broad selection of smartphones, and an equally deep list of smartphone vendor partners. Finding an Android smartphone for nearly any budget, taste, size, and price was all but guaranteed during 2012. As a result, Android was rewarded with market-beating growth."
"Likewise, demand for Apple's iPhone 5 kept iOS out in front and in the hands of many smartphone users," added Llamas. "At the same time, lower prices on the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S brought iOS within reach of more users and sustained volume success of older models. Even with the Apple Maps debacle, iPhone owners were not deterred from purchasing new iPhones."
So can Microsoft and BlackBerry realistically make any sort of impact on these two OS giants? IDC’s Ryan Reith believes people do actually want diversity, but it’s not going to be easy to make a dent: "There is no question the road ahead is uphill for both Microsoft and BlackBerry, but history shows us consumers are open to change. Platform diversity is something not only the consumers have asked for, but also the operators."

Microsoft is leaving billions of dollars on the table by not porting Office to the iPad, according to a new analyst report. That analyst, Morgan Stanley's Adam Holt, believes that Office for iOS would sell to approximately 30 percent of all iPad users; priced at $60 per copy, that comes to a grand total of $2.5 billion per year — minus Apple's cut of the revenues, of course. But does Microsoft actually want Office for iOS out there? It's not necessarily in the company's best interest to rush such a platform to market, even if billions of dollars potentially hang in the balance — it's too busy pushing Office as a cloud-based, OS-agnostic platform. And Microsoft has another reason, aside from pushing the cloud version of Office, to de-emphasize the prospect of its productivity software on iOS: In a bid to draw more customers to its new hardware, Microsoft preloaded its Surface RT tablets with Office; offering the software on a rival touch-screen would take a major selling point off the table.

This is a simple project. It uses an Android device to switch an LED driven by the Arduino. Connectivity is provided by the Bluetooth module inserted in the breadboard. But one look at the UI on the Android device and you might think this is anything but simple. The truth is that [Kerimil] didn’t spend forever learning Java and programming the app. Instead he’s showing off the power of App Inventor to get your Android controls up and running fast.
Check out the third button down; when was the last time you added voice commands to your project? It’s worth clicking through to see just how simple that portion was. App Inventor — a Google cast-out that is now maintained by MIT — is a graphical tool that unlocks the power of an Android handset to those with the most basic of programming understanding. For instance, the voice controls shown off after the break are provided by a single bracket which uses conditional statements to ‘listen’ for the words on, off, and blink. You’ll find the voice recognition diagram after the break as well.
You could try to go completely graphical with this project. There’s the option ofprogramming the Arduino side of the project in a similar way.

It's a rite of passage of sorts -- Apple's "skinny" iMac has nowspent enough time on Earth to be deemed an appropriate addition to the company's refurb ranks. The base late-2012 configuration, which sports a 21.5-inch 1080p IPS screen, a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and that new super-svelte housing can now be had at a $200 discount, priced at $1,099. As with many Apple refurbished products, you likely won't be the device's very first owner, but it will arrive in tip-top condition, with a one-year warranty to boot. As always, "supplies are limited," so if you don't mind having a second-hand system on your desk, in exchange for a slightly thicker wallet, you best make your way over to the source link to snag your very own discounted machine today.

The Apple Shop, in Norfolk, UK is a little corner store that sells apple products. Not Apple products, but apple products, in this case, cider. However, it's been forced to change its name to the Norfolk Cider Shop. However, the name change did not come from any lawsuit from Apple (the Cupertino one, that is), nor has there been any evidence that Apple (Cupertino) knew about them. Instead, they're changing their name because their phones have been ringing constantly from people seeking help with their Apple (Cupertino) products. Apple (Cupertino) opened an Apple store in 2009 in the nearby (larger) town of Norwich.

Pussy Flip is no more, having undergone a name change.
UK casual game outfit Kwalee has renamed its puzzle title Pussy Flip to the altogether less risqué Flip the Cats. It was worried that some of its international audience might have kittens when confronted with the name.
The official line is that the new moniker “will work better in global markets and better describes what the game is about”.
The move comes as the game is expanded to offer a number of new languages – French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Thai, Greek and Portuguese.
The game is now available to download for free complete with its new name on the Apple App Store, including a brand new update bringing a host of new features to the title.

Kill Screen wanted to jumpstart OUYA game development with its Create Game Jam, and it turns out that there were more than a few takers -- 165, to be exact. That makes the grand prize winner, FreeLives' Strange Happenings on Murder Island, something special. Thetop-down action game's dinosaur rampages and Minecraft-like art were wild enough to earn the developer $20,000 and a head start in what's increasingly becoming a crowded field. Other developers weren't entirely left out, as winners in specialized categories still received $5,000 each. There's no guarantee that the results of Create will resonate with gamers in the long run; if they lead to a better selection for an untested console, though, they'll have been worth the effort.

Taiwanese manufacturer looks to reclaim lost market share with new Android device.
HTC has today (February 19th) unveiled its new flagship smartphone in the form of the HTC One, as the Taiwanese firm launches its bid to win back its lost market share.
Running on the latest Android Jelly Bean OS, the HTC One is made entirely out of aluminium and features a 4.7-inch 1080p high display. It also introduces three new HTC Sense innovations – HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound.
The HTC BlinkFeed feature is designed to turn the home screen into a live stream of user-relevant information, such as social updates, news and photos, meaning that users will no longer have to open separate apps to keep abreast of what’s going on.
Meanwhile, the HTC Zoe function comes as part of the HTC UltraPixel Camera. This feature allows the user to capture three-second video clips from which they can select the best still image.
Furthermore, HTC Zoe can also transform a series of still images into short movies, which can be set to a variety of different themes and shared on social media and email.
Designed to offer optimised audio, the HTC BoomSound feature represents something of a smartphone first, with front-facing stereo speakers, a dedicated amplifier and a full HD display aimed at delivering optimised audio when listening to music, playing games or watching videos.
Elsewhere, the HTC One offers the latest LTE technology and is available in silver and black versions.
“People today immerse themselves in a constant stream of updates, news and information. Although smartphones are one of the main ways we stay in touch with the people and information we care about, conventional designs have failed to keep pace with how people are actually using them,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “A new, exciting approach to the smartphone is needed and with the new HTC One, we have re-imagined the mobile experience from the ground up to reflect this new reality.”
The HTC One will be available globally through more than 185 mobile operators and major retailers in more than 80 regions and countries, beginning in March. For more information and to pre-register for the new HTC One, visit www.htc.com.

YouGov survey shows significant increase in customer advocacy and loyalty.
Nokia certainly appears to be making significant strides in rebuilding its reputation, after a YouGov survey conducted between September and December 2012 found that the number of its consumers that would recommend the brand grew by 13 per cent to 45 per cent.
During the same period, the Finnish manufacturer’s detractors dropped from 37 per cent to 33 per cent.
Despite its market share falling from a high of 30 per cent back in December 2009 to just six per cent in September 2012, the number of Nokia customers using its Lumia smartphone has leaped from just one per cent to 40 per cent since December 2011. The same period also saw the number of those using the Symbian operating system fall from 99 per cent to 60 per cent.
The growing uptake for Lumia devices among Nokia’s consumers has led to a substantial rise in its customer satisfaction ratings. This increased level of satisfaction spans across the entire range of the Lumia’s attributes, such as battery life and camera quality, through to Internet connection speeds, reliability and ease of use.
Meanwhile, the launch of the Lumia on Windows Phone 7 and 8 in the run-up to Christmas saw Nokia achieve the biggest improvement in customer loyalty among handset manufacturers. The number of Nokia customers saying that they would stay with the brand for their next handset grew by 12 per cent to 42 per cent between September and December 2012.
However, YouGov’s survey revealed Apple continues to boast the highest loyalty ratings, with 80 per cent of its consumers claiming that they would stick with the brand for their next smartphone.

Free-to-play title Puzzle & Dragons estimated to have generated around $65 million during January
Japanese developer and publisher GungHo Online Entertainment is estimated to be earning around $2 million a day from just one free-to-play mobile game.
As reported by Japanese industry consultantSerkan Toto, puzzle and RPG hybrid title Puzzle & Dragons is thought to have generated around $65 million in sales on iOS and Android in Japan last month.
Players are tasked with collecting monsters, exploring dungeons and battling enemies by sliding and connecting three orbs across the screen.
The title has been out since last February on iOS and last September on Android in Japan, the title was also released in the US and Europe in November.
It is believed most of the game's success is derived from the Japanese market, having dominated the charts in Japan on both the App Store and Google Play.

Apple was recently attacked by hackers who infected the Macintosh computers of some employees, the company said on Tuesday in an unprecedented disclosure that described the widest known cyber attacks against Apple-made computers to date, Reuters reports. 'The same software, which infected Macs by exploiting a flaw in a version of Oracle Corp's Java software used as a plug-in on Web browsers, was used to launch attacks against Facebook, which the social network disclosed on Friday. ... A person briefed on the investigation into the attacks said that hundreds of companies, including defense contractors, had been infected with the same malicious software, or malware. The attacks mark the highest-profile cyber attacks to date on businesses running Mac computers.'

Apple said it was working on a solution for the Exchange bugin iOS 6.1, and that's what it delivered: iOS 6.1.2 has appeared for all devices to address the calendar flaw. The release is targeted and doesn't appear to fix much if anything else, but we'll keep our ears to the ground for more. For now, check for an update in iTunes or on-device to cure at least some of your iOS gear's recent battery woes.

Nvidia brings the fight to Qualcomm's Snapdragon
[h=3]NVIDIA[/h]nvidia.co.uk
Nvidia has announced the Tegra 4i, the company's first integrated 4G LTE mobile processor. While the Tegra 3 processor found success in Android tablets, the lack of LTE prevented hardware manufacturers from using it in smartphones. With the Tegra 4i, Nvidia can compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor series.
The Tegra 4i is based on ARM's R4 Cortex-A9 CPU combined with Nvidia's i500 LTE modem. The company also revealed its Phoenix reference platform for Tegra 4i-based mobile devices.
"Nvidia is delivering for the first time a single, integrated processor that powers all the major functions of a smartphone," said Phil Carmack, senior vice president of the Mobile business at Nvidia. "Tegra 4i phones will provide amazing computing power, world-class phone capabilities, and exceptionally long battery life."
"Tegra 4i is the very latest SoC solution based on the ARM Cortex-A9 processor and demonstrates the ability of ARM and our partners to continue to push the performance of technology and create exciting user experiences," says Tom Cronk, executive vice president and general manager, processor division, ARM.
"ARM and NVIDIA worked closely to further optimize the Cortex-A9 processor to drive performance and efficiency in areas such as streaming and responsiveness. This is an example of the collaboration and innovation that enables ARM technology-based solutions to be market drivers through multiple generations of SoC solutions."
The Tegra 4i mobile processor will be shown at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on February 25 to 28.

CyanogenMod 10.1-toting photography fans are in for a treat: the latest version of the modified Android OS now packs anHDR mode, which was in development for three months, within its stock camera app. When a user snaps a photo with the function, a total of three pictures (one at minimal, neutral and maximum exposures) are taken and combined into a single HDR image with the help of an algorithm. Differences in shutter speed, sensors and optics means quality will vary across smartphones, but the CyanogenMod team says that mid- to high-end devices outfitted with decent imaging hardware -- especially those with zero shutter lag -- should perform admirably. Of course, the group also recommends using a stand or tripod to thwart movement and vibration from fouling
up photos. Android Central points out that a few handset builds haven't received the update, so a handful of CyanogenMod-wielding photogs will still have to get their HDR fix elsewhere.

A new patent filed by Apple shows off a device, which strongly mirrors the firm's highly rumoured iWatch device.
Patent applications includes what appears to be the recently showcased flexible screen technology, in addition to a "bi-table spring"
To you and I, that's code for one of those slap-on bracelets you wore as a kid. Still, the drawings of the device certainly look impressive.

Users of Android-based Samsung phones may be forced to perform factory resets due to copy-paste bug.
Samsung devices running TouchWiz and Android 3.0 or higher have a fatal clipboard bug that can completely brick up the device, making it permanently unusable until a hard reset is issued.
Whenever a user tries to copy something, the following error occurs in the system ClipboardManager class:
java.lang.NullPointerException at android.content.ClipboardManager.
setPrimaryClip(ClipboardManager.java:146)
The fault seems to lie within the Samsung software and there has been a number of complaints onSamsung’s forum going as far back as October.
It is reported that the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update will fix the problem, unfortunately it is not yet available for all devices.
If you do end up with a bricked phone, hard-reset.com has a detailed list of hard resets for Samsung devices.

Largest retail and entertainment complex in the US makes switch due to close integration with Microsoft services.
Mall of America, the US’ largest retail and entertainment complex, is to provide its management team with Nokia Lumia 920s, having previously provided its staff with BlackBerry devices.
The switch was made on account of the device’s tight integration with Microsoft services and Microsoft Office suite.
It was also announced earlier this week that Foxtons had struck a business deal with Nokia to provide around 900 employees with Lumia 820 handsets.
Built on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 platform, the Lumia 920 allows out-of-the-box access to Microsoft apps and services, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and SkyDrive.
These apps integrate with the mall's existing Microsoft services, enabling Mall of America’s management team to review and edit Outlook emails and Microsoft Office documents on the go via their smartphones.
"Switching to the Nokia Lumia 920 has increased productivity for key team members. The combination of a great smartphone with built-in Microsoft Office suite enables our team to work collaboratively, and SkyDrive ensures we can back up and access our work, wherever we are and whenever we want," said Janette Smrcka, IT director at Mall of America.
"With more than 400 events every year, from music acts to celebrity book signings, the ability to capture, edit and share images from the Nokia Lumia 920's PureView camera enables team members to provide instant high-quality imagery and real time updates to social media fans and our business customers. When you combine this with all of the Windows Phone 8 platform's business capabilities, at a price we can afford, we've got a device we're really proud to use," she added.
The Nokia Lumia 920's Live Tiles is designed to offer intelligent, interactive apps, displaying the latest emails, news, documents and people updates as and when they happen. Meanwhile the People Hub in Windows Phone 8 helps organise teams, allowing staff to set-up groups and stay in touch with co-workers across text, Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging and email.
"Mall of America is a great example of how all the business features of the Nokia Lumia 920, combined with its social capabilities, can make a great work device," said Stephanie Mosticchio, enterprise sales manager for North America at Nokia. "The Windows Phone 8 platform has meant the company's employees have been able to transition quickly, due to its built-in and familiar Microsoft Outlook and Office Mobile applications. From the intuitive integration with Microsoft services, to Live Tiles and People Hub making it easy to stay close to what matters, all wrapped in the beautiful polycarbonate body of the Nokia Lumia 920, it offers everything a mobile workforce could ask for."

A 29-year-old woman discovered her iPad had been stolen following a commute on the Eurostar from Paris to Kings Cross St Pancras. She swiftly alerted the police of her missing tablet, who then proceeded to track it via the Find My iPad app.
It turns out the pinched £800 Apple gadget was being held hostage in Bromley-by-Bow by two men aged 27 and 28, who were arrested by officers on arrival. The crooks are currently out on bail pending further investigation, while the victim will be reunited with the device.
PC Michael Richman, of British Transport Police, said: "Thanks to the victim activating the tracking app, officers were able to recover the iPad and arrest two men in connection with the theft.
"These applications, available on many smartphones and tablets, can help owners protect their belongings and can also be very useful in helping us narrow down an item’s location, increasing the chance that a potential thief will be caught."
A similar scenario happened a year ago when the boys in blue used 'Find My iPhone' to locate robbers that attacked a 15-year-old.

The mobile gaming space has been trendier than the dedicated handheld gaming world for a while, but it's now bigger, to boot. According to the inaugural Portable Gaming Report from analytics firm App Annie and International Data Corporation, consumers spent more on iOS App Store and Google Play games than on software for dedicated gaming handhelds like the 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012.
The report also drove home the significance of gaming to the mobile marketplaces. While roughly one-third of the downloaded apps were games, those efforts accounted for more than 60 percent of iOS spending, and close to 80 percent of Google Play consumer spending. In all, more than 20 billion games were downloaded to smartphones and tablets in 2012. As for underlying operating systems, Android "significantly outpaced" iOS adoption rates last year, claiming a 54 percent share of the market compared to Apple's 18 percent.
App Annie and IDC are planning to release quarterly Portable Gaming Reports to chart the cell phone and tablet gaming market alongside worldwide software shipments for traditional gaming handhelds.

Sony's now obsolete PS3 may be the Netflix streaming deviceof choice, but that doesn't mean the popular streaming service will ignore other platforms. The Netflix app on iOS, which saw its last big refresh back in September last year, has just been bumped up to v3.0 -- bringing with it a slew of UI changes aimed towards improving your movie-watching experience. The zoom icon that was removed previously is now back for easier access to full-screen viewing, while a tap displays video titles if you're using the app on the iPad. The three-point change log also includes a relocation of the playback controls. Nothing profound, but hey -- could be worth your while if it keeps you away from reality just a little longer.

As BlackBerry hopes to force its way into the smartphone market with its new operating system BB10, its attempt will no doubt be damaged by its lack of one of the world's most popular apps.
It is reported that Instagram has no plans to produce a native version of its photo-sharing app for the BB10 operating system.
Tech site AllThingsD first broke the news, quoting an unnamed source familiar with the situation as saying: "There will be no [native] Instagram for BB10 for now. Frankly, I'm not sure there will ever be."
Despite launching just last month, BB10 has already seen its issues over its app store and the number of apps on offer.
Following the launch of the firm's new OS, BlackBerry's VP of global alliances and business development, Martyn Mallick, told reporters: "40 per cent of BB10 apps are wrapped Android applications."
Today's news will serve a further blow to BlackBerry as consumers look for reasons as to why they should adopt the new OS and one of the firm's newly released smartphones.
Whilst Instagram will likely make its way to the OS as a port of the Android app, these are typically less user-friendly than native apps and can often lead to a number of additional bugs and issues.
However, whistle lacking the support of Instagram, BlackBerry has managed to get its hands on a number of other popular apps, including the likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Apple shifts 27.4m units.
Strategy Analytics has released smartphone shipment figures for the final quarter of 2012, and it was Apple's iPhone 5 that the captured the hearts of the public, bagging a 12.6 per cent market share, equivalent to 27.4m handsets.
The Cupertino firm continued its stronghold with the iPhone 4S in second place having sold 17.4m devices, while Samsung's Galaxy S III moved 15.4m units. It's a flip reverse from Q3 when the S III was the top dog, the 4S was still second, the the 5 was in third position.
Neil Shah, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: "The iPhone 5 captured an impressive 13 per cent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A rich touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the iPhone 5's success."
Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, added: "Samsung's Galaxy S3 has long proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia. However, global demand for the Galaxy S3 appears to have peaked and Samsung will surely be keen to introduce its rumored Galaxy S4 upgrade in the coming weeks to fight back against Apple's popular iPhone range."

Android is quickly becoming the dominant mobile force in China, with the platform reportedly expected to seize an estimated 80 per cent of the Chinese market’s mobile game revenue in 2013.
In a guest post on Venturebeat, US General Manager of china-based international developer CocoaChina Lei Zhang pointed to several key reasons that has Google outfoxing Apple for the vast majority of the nation’s market.
The developer’s most successful franchise, Fishing Joy, is currently generating $4m gross revenue each month, driven heavily by in-app purchases on Android devices with ultra-broad coverage and carrier-billing.
“These numbers are not unique — other developers have reported revenue on a similar scale from Android games,” Zhang said.
The developer believes while the rest of the world is enamored with the image of iOS, China is going a different route.
“Experts have long assumed that it was only a matter of time before Apple conquered China’s mobile phone market, predicting in January of 2012 that key partnerships could lead to sales of 40m units. As of the second half of 2012, however, some reports showed that iPhones accounted for only 7.5 per cent of the Chinese smartphone market. The prevalence of third-party Android stores alone (at last count there are at least 200) demonstrates Android’s market dominance.”
Zhang added that in contrast, rival Samsung alone accounted for more than 20 per cent of the superior Android market.
China surpassed the US in iOS and Android device activation last June, with the market still very much on the rise. In 2013, the total Chinese smart device gaming market is expected to come in at $793m.

We never used to take the speakers in phones or tablets very seriously. Frankly, we're not sure manufacturers did either. But the old assumption that tiny = tinny is starting to seem a bit unfair. Last year, Dutch chip-maker NXP released a new type of mobile audio component -- the TFA9887 -- that allowed a mobile device to monitor its speaker system in real-time in order to max out volume without risking damage to the driver. Although NXP is way too modest to confirm it, we happen to know that this chip made its way into a number of HTC devices, including the new One, One X+ and 8X, where it's been described as "feedback" speaker technology.
The extra voltage delivered to speakers by this generation of component hasn't been especially wild -- just a couple of volts above the industry norm of around 3V. But what you're about to hear after the break is the next-gen TFA9890, which is expected to appear in devices around the middle of this year, and which racks things all the way up to 9.5V. This promises to be a much more audible leap relative to traditional no-feedback speaker systems, and you should be able to spot the difference for yourself after the break.

At last year's RSA security conference, we ran into the Pwnie Plug. The company has just come out with a new take on the same basic idea of pen-testing devices based on commodity hardware. Reader puddingebola writes with an excerpt from Wired:"The folks at security tools company Pwnie Express have built a tablet that can bash the heck out of corporate networks. Called the Pwn Pad, it's a full-fledged hacking toolkit built atop Google's Android operating system. Some important hacking tools have already been ported to Android, but Pwnie Express says that they've added some new ones. Most importantly, this is the first time that they've been able to get popular wireless hacking tools like Aircrack-ng and Kismet to work on an Android device."Pwnie Express will be back at RSA and so will Slashdot, so there's a good chance we'll get a close-up look at the new device, which runs about $800.

Back in late 2012, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg attributed the increase in statistical city-wide crime to Apple, noting that thieves had a propensity to target folks using iPhones and iPads. As an illustration of the problem, there were 3,890 more Apple product thefts than in 2012 than there were in 2011. At the time, Mayor Bloomberg's press secretary Marc La Vorgna explained that 'if you just took away the jump in Apple', crime in New York City would have been down year over year. Indeed, the number of major crimes reported in 2011 in NYC came in at 104,948 compared to 108.432 in 2012. If you exclude Apple related thefts from the figures, then the crime rate in 2012 is essentially the same as it was in 2011. In light of that, a new report from the New York Post details that Apple is now working with the NYPD in an effort to curb iPhone and other Apple related thefts."

This entire project could have been done as an app, drawing the maze and ball virtually on the screen. But that wouldn’t have been nearly as fun as what [Matt] accomplished. He builta little Labyrinth which responds to the accelerometer in his phone.
Take a close look at that handset. It’s not an Android, an iPhone, or a Blackberry. That thing is a Windows phone…. no, really! The phone doubles as a timer, which we think is a nice touch. It communicates with a Netduino which is both driving and monitoring the Labyrinth.
You may have noticed that the maze is hand-built rather than a modified commercial version of the toy. He mounted some hardboard on a pair of servo motors, then built up the maze on that surface. There is also sensing hardware that detects when the metal ball bridges two contacts. This gives us fond memories of our Minotaur’s Revenge build.

At last, here's what we've been promised: an 8-inch flavor of Samsung's Galaxy Note lineup. Spotted by an anonymous tipster on the MWC show floor earlier today, the booth shows off said tablet designed with portrait usage in mind, meaning it'll pretty much cover up most of whichever hand you'll be holding it with. And obviously, the Note 8.0 comes with a stylus as well. There's not much more to share at this point, but we'll be seeing this new device in its full glory very soon, so stay tuned. One more shot after the break.
Update: The folks over at Beste Product caught a few models posing with the Galaxy Note 8.0 for Samsung's photographer. The Dutch website even has a video -- embedded after the break -- of the whole action, and there you can see some design similarities of the tablet's backside, especially how the camera protrudes a little.

See that group of phones just sitting around, pretending not to have a care in the world? Turns out, this is the new Lumia 720, which is now greeting the world for the first time in a leaked press photo. If you'll recall, this device, along with the Lumia 520 (shown after the break), was recently leaked for arrivalwithin Indonesia. While we've yet to learn of other markets or concrete specs for the pair of smartphones, it just became a bit more likely that we'll see the Lumia 720 and Lumia 520 formally greet the world in just a matter of days. Game on, Nokia.

Mobile World Congress isn't just about the phones. Sometimes a company's got a little tablet love to give as well. HP's out in Barcelona talking up the new Slate 7, a Jelly Bean-sporting tablet with a 1.6GHz dual-core ARM processor inside. The tablet's got a (you guessed it) seven-inch display, plus front and rear facing cameras and, as the red backing not-so-subtly suggests, built-in Beats Audio. The device's biggest selling point, however, has to be that $169 starting price. The Slate 7's due out in April. In the meantime, have a read of the press release after the break.

We knew another Note was coming. After all, Samsung Mobilehead JK Shin confirmed the news back in January. But here at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the tablet's finally been made official. If you haven't already inferred from its name, Samsung's latest S Pen entry boasts an 8-inch 1,280 x 800 TFT display. That puts it on par with the Note 10.1's resolution, although here users will obviously benefit from a more eye-pleasing pixel density (189ppi) and smaller 210.8mm x 135.9mm x 7.95mm (8.3 x 5.4 x 0.31 inches) footprint. Beneath that love it or hate it sealed plastic chassis, lies the company's Exynos 4 Quad processor clocked at 1.6GHz and paired with 2GB RAM, radios for WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, GLONASS and HSPA+ 21 (850/900/1900/2100MHz), up to 32GB of internal storage (microSD expansion available), in addition to a 4,600mAh battery. And, as with most Android products rolling out as of late, the Note 8.0 will ship with version 4.1.2 of Jelly Bean onboard -- skinned with the requisite TouchWiz UX.

Samsung’s MWC booth has been handing out paper invitations to its Galaxy S4 New York launch event.
Confirming earlier rumours that the firm’s new flagship smartphone was set for a March announcement, the invites reveal that the event will take place at 7PM ET at Radio City Music Hall in NYC.
"We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year, and this time we changed the venue (to New York)... as we were bombarded with requests from U.S. mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country," said Samsung Electronics' mobile division chief JK Shin.
Although no specs have been officially announced yet, rumours indicate that the smartphone will pack an Exynos 5 8-core processor, a 4.9-inch full HD screen, 2GB of RAM, 13MP camera, and Android 4.2.2.

Sony has confirmed that the ultra-thin Xperia Z tablet will be released globally in Q2 2013.
Featuring a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 HD display, the Xperia Z has high brightness and high definition video WUXGA technology. It also has Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 to boost image content and contrasts.
"Xperia Tablet Z sets new standards in entertainment by matching premium specifications and Sony technology with cross-device connectivity and a consistent user-experience," said Sony Mobile's Kaz Tajima.
"Xperia Tablet Z reinforces our intention to be a leading player in the premium Android device market, by building on the principles established by Xperia Z and perfectly optimising them for the tablet form factor."
Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the tablet is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and supports Near Field Communications (NFC), enabling one-touch wireless streaming.
Coming in either black, white or red, the Xperia Z will be available from Sony stores on March 1st, then rolled out globally in the second quarter of 2013.

They've had it with no motherf*cking signal on the motherf*cking planes.
In-flight mobile communications firm AeroMobile has found that 70 per cent British travellers would gladly use their phones while flying at 30,000 ft if it was permitted, but access to data services is still forbidden on most airlines.
Around half would use their devices to send texts, while 44 per cent cited the use of apps including Facebook and Twitter, presumably to brag about the sunnier climes they're jetting off to.
Meanwhile, a third of travellers would use surf the web and a quarter would play games. It's important to note that just 19 per cent would feel the need to make a call, which is ironic considering the original purpose of a phone, while 'the majority' expect in-flight mobile access to become the standard in the next few years.
Kevin Rogers, head of revenue development at AeroMobile, said: "These findings certainly echo our experiences at AeroMobile. We know there is demand from consumers; traffic on our network in January outstripped the total traffic for the last six months of 2012, and we expect it to keep growing.
"Last year 5.5 million devices connected to the AeroMobile network, and this year we’re doubling the number of airlines we’re working with to offer even more passengers the option of using their mobile phones inflight."
AeroMobile is responsible for providing a safe mobile network to passengers while airborne, and counts Emirates and Virgin Atlantic among its partners.

Ascend P2 'breaks all records' with 150 Mbps download speed. You can use it with your gloves on too.
Last month's CES saw Chinese OEM Huawei debut two significant devices; one that boasts 20 days of standby time, and a phablet with a 6.1-inch screen.
Having secured longevity and size, the vendor now feels the need for speed, proclaiming that the Ascend P2 is the 'world's fastest 4G LTE smartphone' and boasts download speeds of 150 Mbps.
The 8.44mm slim device sports a 1.5GHz processor, and a 4.7-inch IPS HD screen with Gorilla Glass, a rear 13MP camera/1.3MP front-facing camera, and will come in the token colours of black and white.
Other notable features include NFC, Android Jelly Bean, 'magic touch' to enable use with gloves, while the screen brightness adjusts automatically dependent on the lighting available in the user's environment.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said: "Ascend P2 is the perfect combination of elegance and power, and further proof that there's no need to compromise when desiring a perfect smartphone. It is evidence of the outstanding smartphone experiences and great technology that we are committed to bringing to consumers globally."
The Ascend P2 will also be available globally around the second quarter of 2013. In related news,Huawei has been announced as an official vendor of Firefox OS-based devices.

Bags 700,000 new British users over 12 months.
Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says Windows Phone-powered devices are increasingly rising in popularity among Brits. 700,000 new consumers adopted the line over the past year to encourage a 240 per cent user share increase over the 12-month period.
That said, the surge only takes the OS to a 6.2 per cent UK smartphone market share, but it's an important rise on the 2.4 per cent share from January 2012. The increase has likely been supported by the new WinPho 8 line of devices from Nokia and HTC.
Meanwhile, Android and iOS continue to dominate in the region with a 56.2 and 30.6 per cent share respectively, as BlackBerry falls to 5.8 per cent from 15.7 per cent.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: "Nokia is spearheading this growth, with the Lumia 800 the leader among the Windows handsets. However, it is not the only manufacturer benefitting from the increasing popularity of Windows. HTC’s 8X is now the third bestselling Windows device in Great Britain, demonstrating the clear cross-manufacturer opportunity of the platform.
"With Windows now holding respectable market shares across most major European countries, a key question is who is losing out? In Great Britain, 17% of new Windows customers switched from Android, 26% from Symbian, 6% from RIM and just 2% from iOS. 47% were first time smartphone buyers.
“Understanding the source of growth for the Windows platform is crucial to devise and implement the right marketing and sales strategy. The fact that nearly one in five new customers switched from an Android device should give Microsoft, and its partners, confidence that its OS has what it takes to bring the fight to more established platforms. As almost 30% of its customers switch from rival OS’s, the worry that Microsoft will have to rely on attracting the dwindling pool of first time smartphone buyers to drive future growth is reduced."

Several readers sent word of a Mozilla announcement that 18 carriers have committed to launching phones running Firefox OS. The carriers are primarily from markets in South America and Europe. They include Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica, and Sprint. The devices running Firefox OS will be made by LG, ZTE, Huawei, and Alcatel, and all will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. The new mobile operating system is built to allow HTML5 apps to run directly on the device, a solution Mozilla thinks will give it an edge when playing catch-up to all the software available for Android and iOS devices. "Developers are busy and don't have time to learn a new programming language. We believe that the only remaining eco-system is the web and there are more developers for the web than for any other platform in the world," said Jay Sullivan. According to Reuters, "Mozilla will initially look to compete in so-called 'emerging economies' in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, where many people still use older phone models and have yet to upgrade to more expensive smartphones that feature touchscreens and high-speed Internet connections."

When the BlackBerry Z10 previously reached the FCC, we hadn't yet received the common courtesies of a product name or official carrier plans. Now that it's a known quantity, the device's latest FCC go-round presents a simpler picture. The RFA91LW you see here is clearly the Z10, and the inclusions of CDMA and upper-range 700MHz LTE spectrum leave little doubt that this iteration is headed to Verizon. We also see the expected GSM roaming and NFC. About the only riddle left is the Z10's release date on the network, which isn't yet forthcoming; with FCC approval, though, there's one less thing to hold back a launch on Big Red.

NEC will launch its dual-screened Medias W in Japan in April, but now the company is working to get the phone landing in shores beyond Nihon. We saw glimpses of the red-finish global prototype that's on show here at MWC, although the company wasn't able to confirm any prices or destinations for the worldwide versions just yet. We also managed to get to grips with the Japanese iteration. Fortunately the only difference between the two models is NTT DoCoMo's baked-in proprietary apps and menus. So that's less bloatware? Count us in. We've got more impressions the on the dual 4.3-inch phone (and our hands-on video) right after the break.

Yesterday, Samsung announced the HomeSync Android TV box, and as expected that device is making an appearance here on the MWC 2013 show floor. Boxy media hubs can only be so attractive, but the HomeSync's grey-and-black aesthetic is sleek, and the brushed-metal finish will look familiar to anyone who's used a Sammy handset or laptop. There's a pair of USB 3.0 inputs, an HDMI port, optical audio and Ethernet connections on the rear, and buttons for power and settings on the front, but you can easily hide the console deep inside your home theater rig -- it can be controlled exclusively with a Android 4.2-equipped smartphone or tablet.
The Jelly Bean-powered HomeSync runs a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1TB of storage, and it supports up to eight accounts for uploading, downloading and sharing content between devices. Those with a Galaxy device will be able to wirelessly stream content to their TVs in full 1080p, and Play Store access is on board for downloading additional media. It worked well during our hands-on, but as with any WiFi-equipped streaming device, there was noticeable lag when mirroring the smartphone display on the connected HDTV. Still, assuming the price is right, we can see this being a solid component within any home theater setup. Take a closer look in our hands-on video after the break.

Here's a wild one -- webOS has been revived, and the suitor may surprise you. LG has reportedly lifted the troubled webOS unit from HP's hands, but instead of using it in future smartphones or tablets, it's planning to inject the operating system across its smart TV portfolio -- finally adding a layer of truth to a rumor we first spotted in October of last year. The deal includes the source code for webOS, "related documentation, engineering talent, and related webOS websites." Moreover, LG's procuring HP licenses for use with its webOS wares, not to mention patents that HP had originally gained from Palm. Not surprisingly, dollars and cents aren't being publicly discussed, but we'll be sure to clue you in on any more specifics as we get them.
Update: The official PR has appeared, and can be found after the break. It doesn't shower us with additional info, but fans ofOpen webOS and Enyo should know that LG is assuming "stewardship" of these projects as part of the HP deal.

While most Windows Phone 8 users have at least one optionfor driving directions, that doesn't preclude them opting for a little extra. ALK Technologies at least believes we're willing to splurge, as it's bringing versions of its CoPilot GPS apps to both Windows Phone 8 as well as Windows 8. Both platforms will share the extras we've seen in the Android and iOS releases, such as on-the-fly route editing, speed limit warnings and local search that involves Wikipedia, Yelp and Google -- shh, don't tell Microsoft. ALK is also promising a similar, two-tiered pricing approach that will offer both a free planning-only app as well as a paid Premium version that delivers turn-by-turn navigation and a year of live traffic information. The catch is an extreme wait for the Windows builds: the two will only appear just as we're setting out on our summer vacations.

via http://ax86.patrickaalto.com/ablog.html
The week after my previous ax86 blog post was spent mostly getting rpix86 up to the ax86 level. During the last week I have then been working on both rpix86 and ax86, mostly fixing bugs in either one of them. During the previous weekend I noticed that my AdLib audio emulation did not work correctly on ax86, for example in Leisure Suit Larry 3 the intro music did play fine, but then there was only intermittent audio during the actual game. When I was debugging this I suddenly noticed that I had forgotten to adjust the modulation levels to take into account the sample volume levels that are lower than in DSx86 (this lower volume level is needed for the software channel mixing)!
After I adjusted the modulation volumes, the audio began to sound much better on rpix86, but still there was the problem of missing notes on ax86. I made all sorts of tests but still did not manage to find the cause, until I then finally decided to test the exact same AdLib emulation code (slightly optimized for ARMv6) in ax86 that I used in rpix86. It did play the audio correctly! So, the problem was obviously in some of my non-ARMv6 code, and now that I had only a very limited amount of code to check, I finally found the problem. One of the sample loops mixed the audio properly in the ARMv6 code, but simply overwrote the samples in the ax86 code! This was relatively easy to fix, so now the AdLib audio works correctly in both versions.
The next problem was that rpix86 (which uses the OpenGL ES 2.0 vertex and fragment shaders for palette handling) did not seem to show all palette values correctly. I compared the same DOS games between ax86 and rpix86, and was able to determine that the problem is indeed in the shader code, since ax86 did show the palette correctly. After some adjustments (hacking, to be honest, as I am still very unfamiliar with the shader language) I managed to get the palette values to get converted correctly, so that both ax86 and rpix86 both display the same colors, even though one uses hardware and the other software to handle the palette lookup.
Next, I worked on switching the text mode to use 8x16 pixel character font also in ax86. I had used the original 6x8 chanacters from DSx86 in ax86, and the better looking 8x16 fonts only in rpix86. My eventual goal is to have ax86 adjust the character size based on the physical Android device screen properties, but for now I am using the 8x16 fonts (meaning the text mode screen is 640x400 pixels) always in both versions of my emulator.
This Saturday I then began working on one of the remaining major issues, Sound Blaster digital audio emulation. I am porting the routines from an old version of DS2x86 (which still used the original DSTwo data transfer system) as I need to have somewhat similar buffering scheme. I am also using parts of the DSx86 code, as it is written in ARM assembly instead of MIPS assembly in DS2x86. So, in effect I am combining the algorithms from DS2x86 with the actual code from DSx86. :-)
I already managed to get the easiest digital audio mode, simple one-shot DMA output, working on Saturday. I used Supaplex and my own LineWars II to test this, and both of those games now play audio fine. It was nice to again hear the original music by u4ia in my LW2. :-)
Today I have been working on getting the auto-init DMA system working. This is considerably harder, as it is very timing-critical to not get buffer underflows or overflows, and still make the emulated game think that the audio runs at some quite different speed to what the actual hardware is playing the audio buffers at. I am using Doom for these tests, as I am familiar with how it works (it plays a 4096-sample buffer at 11.1kHz, with an IRQ request after every 128 samples have been played). Converting this to my double-buffered 2048-sample buffers running at 32kHz is somewhat difficult, and I have not yet managed to get it working perfectly. It does already play recognizable audio, but it still has some stuttering and occasional skipping.
During the next week I will continue with the audio features, for example all the ADPCM digital audio formats are still missing. Then the most essential features have been implemented, so I will just need to spend some more time testing and creating some configuration options and settings, before I could release the first beta version. I don't think floating point support is essential for the first beta, as not very many DOS games use floating point operations.

The latest Firefox for Android nightly build now features a number of changes to the UI with the goals of"...keeping a clear distinction between different types of tabs; making better use of the screen real estate on different form-factors and orientations; and being more compliant with Android’s design language. ... the tabs tray is now divided into sections for each type of tab — regular, private, and remote — so that you always keep things separate and organized. Furthermore, once you select a private tab, the main toolbar becomes dark as a clear sign that you're in a different browsing mode. ... We now use a horizontal scrolling tabs tray whenever it improves our use of the screen space. This is achieved with a TwoWayView... We've recently landed a new skin for Firefox for Android that is more aligned with Android's Holo design language. Almost all textures and gradients were replaced by flat colors giving a much lighter feel to the browser."

Apple is the latest technology firm to show its support for gender equality by asking the US Supreme Court to legalise gay marriage.
The iPhone maker joins the likes of Facebook, Intel, and Microsoft, according to Bloomberg.
The companies argue that the ban on same-sex marriage in 41 states harms workplace morale and undermines recruiting.
Orrick Herrington Sutcliffe, the legal team representing the group said: “No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalised by Proposition 8 and similar laws.”
The justices will hear arguments on March 26th on California’s Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative that halted gay marriage in the state after it was allowed for five months.
Google has been one particular technology firm that has always made a stand for gender equality. The company has previously paid employees in gay relationships extra to help compensate for their higher tax bills, as they could not marry.

Smartphone users are now able to scan and analyse their urine for potential medical issues using just their device with a newly unveiled app.
Uchek is capable of testing for 25 different conditions, such as diabetes, cancers and urinary infections, without the need to even leave the home.
It is hoped that by offering mobile health solutions, users will increasingly become aware of the importance checking for such issues.
Creator Myshkin Ingawale unveiled the app at this year's Technology, Educations and Design conference, whilst sharing his belief that the app could soon save lives.
"I wanted to get medical health checks into users' hands," Ingawale told the BBC.
Currently, the app is being put through its paces in Mumbai, India, where the Uchek is being tested for accuracy against laboratory machines, which are typically used to perform such tests.
"If it does well we can make it available to mobile clinics. Instead of buying a $10,000 machine they can use their existing smartphones," continued Ingawale.
Uchek works by identifying the presence of elements within the urine, including glucose, proteins and nitrites, which are linked to a variety of medical issues.
To perform a test, users must collect a sample of urine, into which they must dip a standard test strip. The strip is then placed on a supplied mat, which works to normalise the strip's colours regardless of lighting and user's surroundings and a photo is taken via the Uchek app, which then analyses the colours of the strip for irregularities.
Uchek is set to be available from Apple's app store by the end of March for £13, which includes both the testing strips and mat.
Whilst initially only available on iPhone, Ingawale confirmed that work on an Android version of the app is already under way.
Given the popularity of smart devices, apps such as Uchek would have massive implications on health care if adopted by consumers, who may be more inclined to regularly carry out such medical checks if the process of visiting the doctor is removed.

Apple has performed well in this year’s annual Superbrands survey, ranking second in the consumer category and gaining top spot for business.
Among the consumer brands, Apple was beaten to pole position by Rolex, however rival brand Microsoft fell down to third place and Google languished in sixth.
In the business category, Apple took top spot while Google came in third. Microsoft stood in eighth place, registering a lower rank than the previous year across both categories.
The Superbrands survey is run to identify the UK’s strongest brands and, according to the organisers, is based on the opinions of “marketing experts, business professionals and thousands of British consumers”.

Cost per loyal user dipped by seven per cent on December.
App marketing specialist Fiksu has released results for January, which is usually a busy month for downloads following the surge of new devices owners that crop up around Christmas.
This year was no different and the Fiksu cost per loyal user (someone that opens an app three times or more) in January 2013 fell by seven per cent (11 cents) on December 2012, with costs at $1.56 and $1.67 respectively.
The daily download of apps in the top 200 free US iPhone apps hit 6.01m downloads in January, rising 13 per cent from December's 5.32m.
Micah Adler, CEO, Fiksu, said: "The January Fiksu Indexes are early indicators of the ‘mainstreaming of mobile advertising’ with marketers placing a focus on value over volume as they strategically plan for the year ahead – spreading their budgets out to maximise impact.
"We expect brands to allocate more dedicated spending to mobile advertising campaigns in 2013 and to only get savvier about aligning seasonal spending to the ebbs and flows of user acquisition costs."

And new app reached 1m downloads just seven weeks after launch.
The Beeb introduced BBC Sport to iOS on January 7th, and now reports that the former ME App Of The Day has notched up one million UK downloads, with growth supported by a launch for Android last week.
Beyond the Olympics, the broadcaster says it experienced record web traffic of 42m unique visitors and more than one billion page views in January. Indeed, mobile is increasingly significant for the BBC as phones and tablets accounted for 43.4 per cent of traffic, up from 31 per cent in January 2012.
Phil Fearnley, general manager, BBC News and Knowledge, said: "It’s a huge achievement to reach this milestone so quickly, and is the icing on the cake for a large project to improve BBC Sport content on mobile devices. Since delivering record breaking coverage of the London 2012 Olympics across multiple platforms, we’ve launched a new, responsive, BBC Sport mobile website and apps for iPhone and Android.
"We’ve also migrated key features over to mobile, including live scores, stats and video, and will continue to improve how audiences use BBC Sport on-the-go."

The Coca-Cola Company has selected Nokia Lumia smartphones to be used by select sales forces in Vietnam and Cambodia.
The devices will be utilised on a daily basis by sales associates in those markets for order processing, equipment validation and market execution improvement.
Nokia’s smartphones were chosen in order to provide Coca-Cola staff with full support for Microsoft Office on the Windows Phone 8 platform, allowing easy synchronisation with Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Lync and Office365, as well as seamless integration with Outlook.
"Our collaboration with Nokia and Microsoft enables us to utilise our sales automation and market execution tools on two very progressive platforms," said Javier Polit, chief information officer of the Bottling Investments Group, The Coca-Cola Company. "We will be able to activate our teams with capabilities that enable us to further improve our execution and customer services by obtaining actionable insights. The Nokia Lumia and Microsoft platform fit our enterprise landscape well."
"By combining the Windows 8 platform with eye-catching design and innovative technologies, we have created smartphones that ensure Coca-Cola employees can operate flexibly across multiple geographies and time zones and still remain fully productive," said Stephanie Mosticchio, enterprise sales manager for North America at Nokia. "Providing seamless synchronization with Windows Phone 8 and Microsoft Office, Nokia Lumia smartphones enable Coca-Cola employees to work as effectively on the go as they would in the workplace."

Parents who’ve felt the pain of an unexpected Apple App Store bill after letting their most dearest loose with their iDevice are in luck.
A new scheme proposed by Apple will offer compensation to US mums and dads whose kids have cheekily spent real cash on in-app-purchases without their consent or knowledge.
The proposal will be considered later this week and, if passed, could lead to Apple compensating millions of American customers. Claimants will receive a minimum payment of $5 in App Store credit. Those receiving compensation of $30 or more can choose to receive cash instead.
Consumers who believe they have been affected will have 180 days to email Apple once the proposals have been approved.
The move comes as Apple finally acknowledges that it has not done enough in the past to protect people frim IAP errors.

Tim Cook responds to his company's stock price falling and the tough competition with Samsung
Apple's stock today is worth almost half of what is was just six months ago. The rise of popularity in Android devices, particularly those from Samsung like the Galaxy SIII, has put enormous pressure on the once seemingly flawless technology firm. On a shareholder's meeting today, Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the falling share price, noting "I don't like it either. Neither does the board or management - where the stock trades now vs a few months ago - but we're focused on the long term."
Cook chose to focus on the positives calling the last 12 months "an incredible year of innovation" for Apple in which the company "grew by about $48 billion more than Google, Microsoft, Dell, HP, RIM, Nokia combined." Cook stressed that he's certainly not ignoring the competition from Samsung and Android in general. In fact, he said that Apple could easily produce more devices to challenge Android but it's chosen not to.
"We're not constraining our investment in R&D by a desire to grow a cash pile. We stay very focused and work on a few things. ... The real market share numbers are hard to come by. ... It is clear that Android is on a lot of phones ... it is probably true that iOS is on a lot more tablets .... Success is not making the most. ... Where market share is important (is in being big enough to attract an ecosystem) .... We're really aware of the competition as well. We don't have our heads stuck up ... stuck in the sand. .... There's a button or two we could press to make the most .... That would not be good for Apple," Cook said, according to a transcript from CNBC.
One of the other things some have taken issue with at Apple is that the company is cannibalizing its own iPad with the smaller iPad mini. Cook doesn't mind doing that, however. "If we don't cannibalize, someone else will. We take a long view," he said.
Cook's aiming to maintain an innovative edge at Apple. "Obviously we're looking at new categories -- we don't talk about them, but we're looking at them," Cook said, potentially referring to much talked about categories like the iWatch or Apple TV.
Investor reaction to Cook's meeting so far seems to be muted, as the stock is flat to slightly down (65 cents) as of this writing at $448.32.

Amazon decided last year it was time to take the Kindle brandto Japan, but for some reason, the Fire HD 8.9 wasn't invited. Not being one to hold grudges, the biggest Kindle slate has agreed to a belated introduction, and is now available for pre-order on Amazon's Japanese portal, and in several bricks-and-mortar stores. Parting with 24,800 yen (around $269) will reserve you a 16GB model, or you can double that storage to 32GB for a total price of 29,800 yen (around $323). Both configurations are WiFi-only, and will begin shipping to early adopters on March 12th. If you've been holding out for thatextra 1.9 inches, head for the link below to get in on the first batch, or peruse the Japanese PR if you're keen to hear the full pitch.

Onkyo is best known in the US and most other markets for its audio gear, but in the past, has tried its hand at PCs, music services, and even a dual-screen netbook. The company also occasionally dabbles in tablets, and will soon be releasing no less than six new Android-powered "SlatePads" in Japan. On the bottom rung is a 7-incher with miserly specs: 1.2GHz Cortex-A8 CPU, 800 x 480 res, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage and ICS to sticky-up your fingers. Dual-core 1.6GHz Cortex-A9 processors, 1GB RAM and 4.1 Jelly Bean are found on the rest of the range, which includes another 7-inch, one 8-inch, one 10.1-inch and two 9.7-inch models. All will be available from March 8th, with damage starting at 10,480 yen (around $114) and topping out at 28,800 yen (approx. $313) for the 9.7-inch, 2,048 x 1,536 res option. You can check out the finer details in the Japanese PR sourced below, but know these aren't likely to make it stateside -- not unless you want to pony up the extra dough to import one, anyway.

Apple is rumoured to be developing an iWatch so beautiful you'll want to cry, though it won't have a minute hand or numbers. Of course, the firm hasn't confirmed a wrist-based device, leaving conjecture to build on the back of its patent acquisition.
Seemingly, tangible evidence is irrelevant when it comes to Apple, as 19 per cent of UK smartphone owners plan to buy an iWatch. It supports past research that showed 35 per cent of Brits have got into debt over Apple products.
The premature buyers would be prepared to spend £174 on the gizmo, according to VoucherCodes.co.uk, while 11 per cent of respondents would be happy to spend over £200 do be one of the first owners.
It's unknown what features the iWatch will include, but 40 per cent want text, 27 per cent want wireless charging, 24 per cent want Siri voice control and 21 per cent want health monitoring.
Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk , said: "Despite Samsung stealing a march on Apple of late, this research shows its products still have a devoted customer base, with fans already looking forward to getting their hands on the first piece of wearable tech from the brand.
"However, with price points predicted to be in the region of £200 to £300, the majority of tech fans will need to wait for the iWatch to come down in price or start saving if they want to get their hands on one."

Using a mobile device to control an application on a PC, media player or video game console, isn't too uncommon, but it is when the content being controlled is a game. Just how possible would it be to play a fairly fast-paced game on your PC via your mobile device? Google wanted to find out, so it crafted a game called Super Sync Sports, where you control an athlete on your desktop or notebook via controls on your phone or tablet. To make a game like this possible, Google turned to WebSockets for real-time collaboration between two devices, HTML5 for the audio, Canvas for the graphics, and CSS3 for the styling and transitions."It appears that it routes your controls through the Internet rather than locally. Something like this over bluetooth or wifi with a shared touch screen might be cool for electronic board games.

UPDATE: According to Eurogamer, Apple has since refunded the full £1710.43 'as the purchases were clearly unintentional.'
ORIGINAL STORY:
The Daily Mail has today highlighted the plight of a mum and dad whose kid has racked up am eye-watering £1,700 Apple App Store bill.
The paper reports that Danny Kitchen’s father happily handed over his password so the youngster could download free title Zombies vs Ninjas. Which he did.
The thing is, he also went on to download a £69.99 piece of DLC. 19 times.
However, whereas Apple has refunded in the region of £66m to US customers whose kids had cheekily downloaded IAPs without permission, the company has refused to refund the Kitchens.
In the Daily Mail’s (but sadly not the Kitchen’s) defence, the paper does point out that iOS devices have built-in parental controls designed to prevent just this sort of issue.
On the flip side, poor Danny – who has understandably been left “in tears” by the drama – surely cannot be held to account for what is a very easy misunderstanding?
Indeed, most parents will have either experienced similar problems first hand or at the least know other parents who have. In many instances Apple has agreed to refunds. Why it will not in this instance is unclear, particularly considering the stance it takes in the US.
“All iOS devices have built in parental controls that give parents and guardians the ability to restrict access to content, eg internet access and age rated content such as music, games, apps, TV shows, movies etc,” an Apple spokesperson explained.
“Parental controls also give parents and guardians the option to turn off functionality such as purchasing from iTunes and the ability to turn off in-app purchases.
“Our parents' guide to iTunes details the steps and measures parents and guardians can take to make sure younger players have access to the right content. The first thing we recommend is not to share your password.”

Kellee Santiago will serve as head of developer relations, and Portal dev Kim Swift will make an exclusive title for Ouya
In an official update on its website today, Ouya announced that it's hired former Thatgamecompany (Journey, Flower) executive Kellee Santiago as the company's new head of developer relations. "We've been looking for someone to lead our outreach to developers, someone who really 'gets' how developers work, someone who can help devs bring their most creative, exciting work to OUYA," said Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman.
"OUYA gets it. This is the first console company that really understands how important it is to remove the barriers to development," Santiago said. "By freeing up the development process, OUYA is opening up new doors in console gaming."
The Ouya update also noted that the company is now prepared to ship the Android console out to its Kickstarter backers on March 28. The full console launch at retail is still planned for this June. "Parts are in the factory and assembly lines are buzzing. We'll gradually ramp up production as we make sure things are working," the company stated.
The last bit of exciting news for Ouya fans is that Portal and Left 4 Dead developer Kim Swift has announced that her next game will be exclusive to Ouya. Swift is working with Airtight Games on a new title. "We truly feel that this platform will give us the freedom to fully realize the funky, unique game we have in mind. Though the title will definitely appeal to core gamers in terms of skill and difficulty, it really has a completely unexpected, imaginative slant that's totally at home on this console. Expect an official announcement soon!" Swift commented.
For more on Ouya and why the company is making free-to-try mandatory for every game on the platform, be sure to read our recent chat with Julie Uhrman.

A recently published Apple patent reveals the design for a "magnetic tablet configured to rigidly hold a portion of the tablet device in place." You can bet that "tablet device" is theiPad, and judging from the many photos associated with the patent, the stand is meant to mount the slate more securely than your average dock, not to mention the Smart Cover. One scenario, for instance, shows the iPad secured on top of a treadmill, while another depicts the device hanging from the roof of the car. By far the most intriguing example is two iPads connected to each other magnetically, creating a hinge between the two displays. Click through to the source link for a look at Cupertino's other envisioned use cases for this super-strength stand -- though don't get your hopes up on seeing this design hit stores any time soon; the original patent was filed in late 2011.

OUYA announced this afternoon that its Android-powered game console is shipping to Kickstarter backers starting on March 28th. The company took to its Kickstarter page to announce the news, which says, "Parts are in the factory and assembly lines are buzzing." When the console starts arriving to folks who supported the Kickstarter campaign -- wherein the company raised just over $8.5 million dollars -- there'll be a lengthy list of launch games (around 500 last we heard) and more on the way. Alongside news of the console's launch date for backers comes word that Portal creator Kim Swift is developing a "brand new, exclusive title" for the console, andPapo & Yo dev studio Minority Media is also stepping up with a new game. Both Tripwire Interactive and nWay are also bringing games to the OUYA, with the former working on two games and the latter working on one (action-RPGChronoBlade).
If that weren't enough, Journey developer Kellee Santiago was announced as the newest high profile OUYA employee, wherein she'll "lead developer relations." Santiago has a short history of high impact in the game industry, having helped create thatgamecompany (developers of Flow, Flower, andJourney) as well as leading an excellent TED Talk. She also appeared in this Engadget Show. Beyond working to entice devs to OUYA, Santiago said on Twitter that she'll still be making games. "I will still be making stuff, too, keepin' it real, don't worry," she wrote.
And that's to say nothing of the console's future; company CEO Julie Uhrman told us at DICE 2013 that the OUYA will see annual hardware refreshes, akin to mobile phones. We've yet to get our hands on the device, but we've heard good things from developers who got their early units back in December. Should you wish to hear even more about the OUYA ahead of its late March launch, Uhrman is joining Engadget on-stage for our first ever Expand event in a few weeks -- snag your tickets right here!

eBay is as close as it comes to a genuine Aladdin's cave, and we've seen plenty of ancient rarities, prototypes, sci-fi weaponry, and the odd killer robot go under its gavel. One of the latest artifacts of interest comes from eBay's Netherlands site, which is hosting an auction for a Windows Phone prototype slider known to her friends as Julie (or Jolie, depending on where you look in the listing) from the now defunct Sony Ericsson partnership. The phone that never wasfrom the company that is no longer is allegedly one of only seven units made, and is touted as having an 8-megapixel shooter and 16 gigs of storage. Some digging through the XDA Developers' forum suggests the handset's old Windows Phone 7 ROM is basically non-functional, so don't expect to plug in your SIM and stroll out the door with a useable device. If that doesn't put you off, however, there's no exorbitant entry price, and bids remain sensible, for now. Head to the listing below for more pictures and to get in on the action, but bear in mind the only shipping options are for Europe. Nothing a PM with an outrageous offer won't rectify, surely.
Update: The seller has been in contact to let us know that international shipping is now available, and while the WP7 ROM running on the handset is by no means a final build, there are no issues with voice calling, the camera or Bluetooth.

Americans wanting a Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE of their own have largely been biding their time for a Verizon model. They're still waiting for that variant to show, but US Cellular isn't -- it just started shipping its own variant of the 4G tablet. From all indications, the slate is largely a branding swap that's adapted to the carrier's network, which is good news for prospective buyers who aren't dead set on Big Red. Pricing might give at least some customers pause, however. US Cellular's Note 10.1 LTE costs $500 only when it's paired with at least a 2GB data plan, and $800 no strings attached. With that kind of outlay, you'll want to be fully committed to the concept of pen-based computing before picking one up.
