Showtime's standalone streaming service was tipped back in November, and now it appears we may be close to the official reveal. Variety reports CBS is prepping to announce the subscription option to temp those who've cut the cord as soon as this week -- six months after CEO Les Moonves discussed the service's 2015 arrival on an earnings call.
Update: The service is official, and scheduled to launch in "early July" -- definitely in time for the new seasons of Ray Donavan and Masters of Sex on July 12th. Just like HBO Now, it's coming to Apple's iOS products first (Apple TV, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) and the web via Showtime.com. For now, any word on additional platforms and providers is "coming soon." It's just called "Showtime" and access to the app will cost $10.99, although there will be an initial 30-day trial.

Skype users aren't safe from app-crashing messages, too. VentureBeat has discovered through the service's community forums that the app suffers from a bug similar toApple's texting flaw. If you recall, that one crashes the Messages app when it receives a specific string of Unicode characters. It's even easier to put Skype out of commission: all it takes is sending or receiving "http://:" without the quotes. The flaw affects Skype for Windows, iOS and Android in different situations. For instance, it crashes the Windows app if you're the sender and completely kills it if it's the one receiving that string of characters. However, the iOS and the Android apps are only affected when they're the recipient, and Skype for Mac seems to be immune from the issue.

I was supposed to review the Apple Watch. That was the plan, but then, when Engadget had its first chance to test the device, I was on vacation. Specifically, I was in France, where I ran the Paris Marathon, my sixth 26.2-mile race in five years. As it happens, our Editor-in-Chief Michael wrote a fair, thorough review on his own, and he cut a fine figure in that stop-motion walkthrough video, too. If there's one thing he didn't go into detail on, though, it was the Apple Watch's performance as a fitness device. Some background there: Michael is one of those naturally skinny people with a stupidly fast metabolism who doesn't need to work out to stay trim. Which is a good thing, because he hates working out. That's why, when I finally had the chance to try out the Apple Watch myself (a $649 stainless steel model), I chose to focus on its abilities as a fitness gadget -- a fitting decision, considering my running habit was what kept me from reviewing the watch in the first place.

Google's big developer conference is done for another year, which means that the company is ready to dish out some hot statistics regarding the state of Android's union. Thankfully, the search engine can boast that Gingerbread no longer runs on a substantial portion of its devices, since it's only running on 5.6 percent of all hardware. In fact, more than half of the ecosystem now runs Jelly Bean or KitKat, with Ice Cream Sandwich similarly dumped into the footnotes. The company also dug into the figures to reveal that almost half of all Android devices have a screen with a resolution of 240dpi, with only 20 percent of users rocking a weaker display. The TL;DR version of all that is simple: Google's finally escaping its past, and almost everyone is rocking a device that won't embarrass you in the playground/office/golf club.

Mobile gaming doesn't mean low-power gaming according to Acer and Intel. The companies have joined forces to produce the first 14nm Atom x7 processor-powered (aka Cherry Trail) Android tablet. The gamer-centric Predator 8 has the Acer Quad-Audio system with four front-facing speakers and the aggressive design sense (sharp angles, red, black and gray color scheme) that's been prevalent in PC gaming. The Gen8 Intel graphics should render 3D and video with less of the stuttering that pulls you out of your gaming experience. We didn't get a chance to play with the tablet, but it should be on the market in the next few months.

If you need any further proof that Microsoft is backing away from touch-centric interfaces in Windows 10, you just got it. The Skype team has revealed that it's planning to ditch the "modern" Windows (read: Windows 8-only) version of its messaging app on PCs as of July 7th. After that, the next update to the app will kick you over to the desktop release. Skype says that it's "simplifying" its experience around a single program that you can use with both a touchscreen and a mouse and keyboard. That's certainly true, although it's also an acknowledgment that people prefer the desktop app more -- it's easier to navigate without scrolling, and there are more features (such as screen sharing) that might convince you to stay. This shift won't affect Windows RT or the Skype features woven into Windows 10, but there's no doubt that the conventional desktop software is the big star going forward.

Successful hack attacks often happen not because of tricky coding, but plain old "social engineering" -- ie, conning people. A Github researcher called "jansoucek" has discovered an iOS exploit that works on that principal to steal people's iCloud passwords. The latest version of iOS, 8.3, apparently fails to filter out potentially dangerous HTML code embedded in incoming emails. The researcher's proof-of-concept code takes advantage of that by calling up a remote HTML form that looks identical to the iCloud log-in window. It could easily trick someone into entering their iCloud username and password, then hide the dialog after the user clicks "OK."

Don't like having to wrestle with pop-up ads and similar intrusions when you're browsing the web on your iPhone? You might not have to when iOS 9 rolls around. Apple has quietly let slip that the operating system's version of Safari includes supportfor content blocking extensions, much like its Mac counterpart -- in other words, it can block ads. You only have to install an app with the right Safari extensions to make cookies, images, scripts and other unwanted material disappear. It's not certain how Apple will police apps with these add-ons, but it's feasible that at least some ad blockers will get approval.

The OUYA rollercoaster is preparing to make its final run, according to a report onCNET: Apparently, Razer is in talks to buy the company. Razer and OUYA are working on a deal and discussing how to fold OUYA's staff into Razer's, though nothing is finalized, the site says. OUYA, as you'll recall, raised $8.6 million on Kickstarter in 2012, pitching itself as an accessible, cheap, Android micro-console with a library of "free to try" games. When OUYA launched in July 2013, reviews critiqued its controller, game library and technical issues, and it simply never gained traction as a viable gaming system. In its first month, just 27 percent of OUYA owners had actually purchased a game and the console historically hasn't provided much revenue for developers.

Like it or not, selfies remain A Thing -- and there are signs that Apple is about to embrace those narcissistic photos through a hardware upgrade. Programmer Hamza Sood has discovered code in iOS 9 which suggests that the next iPhone's front camera will get a flash (increasingly common on camera-centric phones), so nighttime won't prevent you from putting yourself in the frame. You could also see some big improvements to video and software-only features, including 1080p recording, 240 frames per second slow-motion capture and panoramas for those extra-wide group shots. There's no guarantee that any of these features will make the cut in future devices, but they hint that Apple is eager to move past the creaky 720p front cam itoffers today.

Apple began distributing fourth beta of iOS 8.4 to its developers on Wednesday that includes a permanent solution to the recently discovered "shutdown bug." This programming glitch causes an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to automatically reboot when a string of mixed alphanumeric and arabic characters are texted to the device. And since the issue revolves around how iOS' banner notifications handle unicode, the bug also affects third party messaging apps like Snapchat and Twitter. iOS 8.4 is expected to be out of beta and available to the general public by the end of the month, likely just before the release of Apple Music on June 30th. Until then, users can refer to this Apple Support document for a temporary workaround.

If you're an eBay veteran, you know that every moment of a late-stage auction counts. You don't want to lose because you couldn't grab your phone quickly enough to make a counter-bid, after all. Appropriately, eBay is rolling out an Apple Watch app to go with its Pebble and Samsung Gear efforts. The wearable software both gives you alerts for auctions and lets you make quick bids -- you might prevent someone from sniping that antique auction without even reaching into your pocket. You can also reply to messages with voice dictation, and keep tabs on your top-level buying and selling activity. The update should hit the App Store today, so check it out if you always have to beat other buyers to the punch.

Apple Pay is on its way to the UK next month, and from launch, all the big banksexcept Barclays, and a quarter of a million retail outlets will support it. And yet, despite so many day-one partners, it seems we're not quite ready for it. You see, Apple Pay isn't like any other contactless payment method we use already, since you authorise transactions with a Touch ID fingerprint scan. Contactless debit and credit cards don't require any kind of authentication, which is why transactions are currently limited to a maximum of Ł20, though the cap is increasing to Ł30 in September. The whole point of the two-step Apple Pay process is that you can make purchases of any amount using your iPhone, but today we're hearing that the majority of retailers will be bound by the Ł20 cap at launch.

One thing Apple failed to mention last night at its WWDC 2015 shindig is that itsWatchOS 2 update will have much improved security. Early Watch adopters noticedthat all a thief would need to do to pair the wearable with a new iPhone would be to reset it. Although that's documented as a "feature" in case you forget your passcode, Watch will get the same Activation Lock as an iPhone when WatchOS 2 arrives this fall. Activating it will then require your iCloud Apple ID and Password, making it effectively useless for thieves. Apple may have also made the move because the new OS will support native apps, so more of your personal info could end up in the Watch's 8GB of internal storage.

Even though iOS 9 will include a new version of Siri, Maps and other features, Apple said that it'll be a much lighter update than iOS 8 was. Software VP Craig Federighi revealed that the incoming OS will take up just 1.3GB of extra space on your iPhone or iPad, compared to nearly 4.6GB for the previous version. Given how much trouble folks had getting that update on their devices over-the-air, that's no doubt a smart move on Cupertino's part.

It's finally here. Well, it will be soon, but at least the announcement is official. AtWWDC today, Jimmy Iovine revealed Apple Music: the long-rumored music servicethat follows the purchase of Beats last year and it provides all of your music content in a single app. That's a streaming service, radio, album purchases and more all in the same place. Yes, you read that correctly: radio. Apple will offer live radio 24 hours a day with stations that are curated by real humans -- like Beats Music's playlists. What's more, over 30 million iTunes songs will be available for streaming or saving for listening offline. There are recommendations based on your listening habits too, but instead of using some algorithm to find something you may like, experts "who know and love music" will serve up the suggestions. For artists, Apple Music has Connect where they can post exclusive tracks, tour photos, new material and more, giving fans a glance at what's going on behind the scenes. So, what about unsigned artists? They can share music through Apple's new effort, too.

Skitch is one of the most popular productivity apps, both on mobile and the desktop, for a reason: it makes it easy to snap, mark up and share just about anything, like PDFs. If you've been using it on iOS, there's now a reason to like the application even more. Thanks to a new version, released earlier today, you can use Skitch to annotate web pages within Safari, eliminating the need to manually capture a screenshot and then having to open up the app. To install you simply have to tap the Share button while in the browser and add Skitch as part of your actions, which will then let you see it next to Copy, Print and others. It's basically an extension, so think of it as a way to save you a few taps whenever you're trying to express something important -- as shown by the example above.

To call most in-flight entertainment systems old and crusty would be generous when even the more advanced systems typically pale in comparison to your laptop or tablet. Virgin America might just narrow that gap, though. It's rolling out a beta version of its Red seatback platform that runs Android on a multi-touch screen, much like many mobile devices. The modern input gives you more sophisticated flight maps and games than you're used to seeing in mid-air -- you can play Pac-Man while you're waiting for your meal, if you like. The devices also have three times as much storage as before, which will let you watch 720p videos including Netflix staples like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Reuters has just reported that BlackBerry could come out with a phone loaded with -- wait for it -- the Android operating system later this year. Sources told the news outlet that this doesn't mean the end of BlackBerry 10, but it is a big move that signifies the Waterloo company's dwindling sales. Reuters also reports that one of the reasons for the move is that BlackBerry CEO John Chen is putting its bets on a device management system called BES12, which gives companies the ability to manage not just BlackBerry phones but also Android, iOS and Windows devices on their internal networks. Apparently BlackBerry might implement Google's mobile OS in the slider device that was teased at Mobile World Congress a few months ago, which means that this Android phone could launch this coming August. We're reaching out to both Google and BlackBerry for comment and will update this post if we get a response.

A barely publicised feature of Apple’s upcoming iOS 9 could spell great news for owners of 16GB iPhone or iPads.
The increasing size of not only iOS itself but also apps has left owners of Apple’s entry-level devices with little room to play with, forcing many to pick and choose what apps they have installed and limit the amount of music, photos and movies they store on their machine.
However, ArsTechnica reports that iOS 9 will take several steps to make life easier for such owners.
For instance, the space requirement for users to download and install over-the-air firmware updates has been reduced from 4.6GB to just 1.3GB. Bigger news, though, comes in the shape of a new feature called ‘App Thinning’.
The increasing number of different iOS devices mean that a typical download contains a whole load of assets that a user doesn’t actually need (such as both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries and assets for all the various iPhone screen sizes) because they aren’t relevant to their particular handset or tablet.
Developers will also now be able to tweak their apps so that a download only contains the files needed to run the software on a specific handset, cutting the clutter and significantly reducing app size. The process devs need to follow to implement this sounds incredibly simple, too.

PC hardware specialist Razer is reportedly “in the process” of acquiring Ouya.
The Kickstarted Android console firm was revealed as beingup for sale in April. Now TechCrunch says that it has heard Razer could be the buyer.
Ouya took to Kickstarter in 2012 on the hunt for 41m of crowdfunded cash. In the end it raised just under $8.6m, with backers attracted to a new console frontier free of the controlled platform that have dominated for decades.
The console still stands as the fifth largest Kickstarter campaign of all time.
Ouya went on to secure almost three times that amount again in venture capital funding, but despite the huge backing it has failed to secure any meaningful traction in the market.
Furthermore, software successes have been thin on the ground. As of late 2014 its best-selling title, Towerfall, had sold just 7,000 units on the platform. Furthermore, the company has faced a string of controversy, most notorious of which was its troubled Free the Games fund.

If you were wondering what Nokia's take on a smartwatch would have been, take a look at the Microsoft Moonraker, a cancelled watch that attempted to bring in some of Windows Phone's style. Microsoft nixed it when it acquired Nokia's phone arm, The Verge reports, but now we've got an idea of what it looks like thanks to Microsoft designer Pei-Chi Hsieh, who posted it on their (now deleted) Tumblr blog. Noted leakhound (and former Engadget editor) Evan Blass first unearthed the image, which shows a multicolored smartwatch design with slightly rounded corners. From afar, it doesn't look that much different than the Apple Watch, funny enough. Sources say Microsoft dumped the Moonraker project because it was working on the ill-fated Band wearable.

The competitive streak between Apple and Samsung has always been very public between the two companies, and today the war wages on.
Samsung has revealed two new Galaxy S6 Edge adverts mocking Apple’s iPhone 6 smartphone, pointing out a few of the iPhone’s flaws.
The company highlights the Edge’s wireless charging capabilities and dual curved screen, against the iPhone.
In one advert, the company said: “Check out the edge of the Galaxy S6 Edge. It displays colors when your top five contacts call. The edge of the iPhone 6 displays nothing. But it has a vibrate function."

Pour one out for the OG iPad Mini, as Apple has just removed it from its website and online store. It proved Apple could effectively build a smaller tablet, though its low-resolution (1024 by 768) display doesn't hold a candle to the sharp Retina screens we're used to today. And with the iPad Mini 2 at $299 (and no shortage of deals available), there simply wasn't any room for the older tablet on the market. Now Apple is only promoting the iPad Mini 2 and 3 online. And given the $100 price difference between those two tablets, as well as the fact that they sport the same hardware (aside from Touch ID on the iPad Mini 3), we recommend snapping up the iPad Mini 2 for now. By dumping the original iPad Mini, Apple now has a fully 64-bit lineup of iPads, which should make life easier for developers moving forward.

Samsung is finally responding to a major security bug that affects the keyboards on its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The security firm NowSecure revealed the exploit earlier this week, which gives hackers the ability to execute code on Samsung's mobile devices. Today, Samsung announced that it's issuing a fix to its mobile security policies over the next few days. The company also stressed that it didn't think the exploit wasn't much of a threat, since it required a hacker being on an unsecured network with your phone. Also, the company's Knox security software offers kernel protection to prevent malicious code from running. Still, this isn't the sort of exploit any company can ignore, especially when a research firm has already detailed exactly how it works.

The first Apple Watch might have only just reached stores, but that isn't stopping rumors about Cupertino's next wearable. Sources for 9to5Mac claimthat Apple already has some big plans for its second-generation Watch, and the highlight would be a front camera for video calls -- yes, you'd get to live out your Inspector Gadget dreams and have a face-to-face chat from your wrist. There's a chance this feature could get cut if there's either a change in the roadmap or logistical problems, but it's currently on the cards for a "likely" 2016 debut.

Vimeo has just released a redesigned Cameo video app, more than a year since it purchased the startup. According to the company, it rebuilt the app "from the ground up starting from scratch," though it retains its core feature: the ability to create, edit and share video clips. The team made editing a lot simpler and video rendering a lot faster; they also added a bunch of new themes, fonts and soundtracks for background music that you can use. You can easily import straight from Vimeo or your iPhone camera roll, as well, without having to worry about file size and length. And, as you'd expect, the redesigned app makes it simpler to upload clips to Vimeo, where your stuff might get featured in the new "Best of Cameo" channel. The new Cameo's now out on iTunes (or it will soon be, if you don't see it yet) and remains separate from its parent company's application.

Google released a standalone clock in the Play Store this week. While Mountain View has been keen on serving up pieces of the Nexus experience (read: unskinned Android) for a while now, this latest release provides more evidence that the company is going all-in on a la carte apps. For users of devices other than a Nexus or Moto X -- which also offers a nearly bloat-free OS -- this means they can take advantage of the core pieces of Android and the larger Google ecosystem. In other words, you can customize a Samsung or HTC device how you see fit. It's like Google is making what we commonly refer to as "stock" Android another skin, but in separate apps so that users can choose exactly what they want. Since last April, users have been able to install a standalone Camera app built by Google, while Gmail, Maps, Messenger andCalendar have their own individual software, too.

When a deal with Microsoft allows it to do so in 2016, Nokia plans to design and license phones again. In what comes as no surprise, the company's CEO told Manager Magazin that it would look for interested parties to release the devices when the time comes. "We will look for suitable partners," said CEO Rajeev Suri in an interview. "We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license." Nokia sold its devices and services business to Microsoft last year, but it can begin to license mobile gadgets to other companies next year. If you'll recall, it already released the familiar-looking N1 tablet in China post-acquisition. Of course, Nokia still owns its Here mapping tech, which has reportedly drawn interest from automakers and transportation companies like Uber. While the devices may carry Nokia's aesthetics, keep in mind that the Lumia, Asha and X brands all belong to Microsoft. A company would pay Nokia for the design work and rights to use the name, but those recognizable labels are off limits.

Recording games on your console or PC is pretty easy these days. But, what if your game of choice is on mobile? Search Google's Play store, and there's abevy of apps promising to record your screen with ease. Sadly, most of them require you root your device, or simply look a bit dodgy. If you're a Samsung user, there's a legitimate choice that won't require you meddling with your device -- it's called Game Recorder+. The app lets you record any game (along with your grinning mug, and commentary as you play it), and captures the game sound direct from the device, too. We'd find it even more useful if we could just record whatever we wanted, but this seems like a good start.

Apple will finally start selling its Apple Watch in retail stores later this month, but if you're desperate to pick up the timepiece, there's now another ordering method to consider. The company is rolling out a "Reserve & Pickup" system which allows you to choose a Watch online and, as the name implies, ultimately buy and collect your order in store. It's a departure from the current appointment system, which requires that you order on the web -- even if you've just handled the device in a shop. Instead of waiting for the mailman to deliver your Watch, you can now choose an almost immediate booking at your nearest store and walk out with the hardware sharpish. As 9to5Mac reports, the option is already live in the UK, China and Australia, and we expect other countries will follow later today. It seems Apple is finally starting to catch up with its pre-order backlog from May.

The folks in Mountain View have been paying security researchers who find flaws in Google's software for years. After announcing a program thatspecifically targeted Chrome, the company is looking to find vulnerabilities inits mobile OS. The Android Security Rewards program will pay researchers who "find, fix and prevent vulnerabilities" that exist inside the operating system. When it comes to issues affecting Nexus devices sold through Google Play, Google will pay per step that's needed to fix the problem -- including patches and testing. Just finding a critical bug will earn you $2,000, for example. The largest rewards are available to those who figure out how to go around Android's security features like ASLR, NX and sandboxing. In 2015, Google shelled out over $1.5 million to researchers who found bugs, with the largest individual reward totaling $150,000. If you're looking to join the hunt, you can browse all the detailed info right here.

Razer recently launched its Open Source VR intiative, complete with a virtual reality headset to get more developers into the VR game. The initial launch notably lacked Android support and positional tracking hardware, but it's now filed those holes with its latest OSVR Hacker Development Kit (HDK) 1.2. The IR system is included in the kit price, including the 100Mhz IR LED system and a camera that provides 360 degrees of position tracking. Previously, Razer included IR position tracking designs and templates, but didn't supply the hardware.

Back in October, Adobe delivered a new suite of mobile apps to iOS devices. Keeping its promise to include the Android faithful as well, the company'sPhotoshop Mix, Color CC, Brush CC and Shape CC are now available for download over at Google Play. Creative types running Google's mobile OS on their devices can expect to easily transform a photo taken with a phone into vector art with Shape CC, make images edits with Photoshop Mix and build a collection of hues with Color CC. If you fancy iOS, there's a new color capture app called Hue CC. With this bit of software, capture colors from photos to create custom Looks that can then be applied to videos in Premiere and After Effects on the desktop or Premiere Clip on a phone or tablet. All of the mobile apps are free to use, but Creative Cloud subscribers can take advantage of desktop compatibility and cloud storage for all of the stuff created while on the go.

Whenever someone talks about the 12.9-inch iPad, we pull the same nervous, hopeful gaze that we do when Half-life 2: Episode Three is mentioned. Deep down, we know in our hearts that neither are very likely to happen, but no matter what, they'll never be able to take the hope from us. Now, iOS expertand friend of the site Steve Troughton-Smith believes he's found a nugget of proof that the iPad "Pro" exists. Oh, put your tongues in your cheek and grab a handful of salt, because we're venturing into tangent territory, here.

One of the problems with keeping the news of a recent engagement a secret is that, sometimes, an investment banker runs off and tells your parents before you can. That's the sticky situation that has met Razer and Ouya, since their recent union has been revealed by the latter's advisors at Mesa Global. The news comes a week after the first rumors that corporate wedding bells were in the air, which was met with a non-denial from the high-end gaming company. There's no word on the specifics of the deal, but like an angry relative, we've sent Facebook messages to representatives of both companies in the hope of getting a picture of the ring. Still, if Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan had any big announcements ready for E3, they probably just got ruined. Bankers, eh?

One of the perks of being a Virgin Media customer is gaining access to the company's suite of mobile apps. They let you make landline calls and watch TV on your smartphone, but if you also use its mobile service, you can connect to thousands of free WiFi hotspots all over the UK. Unfortunately for iOS users, WiFi Buddy, the provider's dedicated wireless app, has been Android-only since launch. That's now changing after Virgin Media finally deemed iPhone owners worthy of free WiFi and has made the app available on the App Store too. Once installed, you'll get access to over 22,000 The Cloud hotspots (thanks to Virgin Media's deal with Sky) in places like Marks & Spencer, Wetherspoon, WH Smith, Pret A Manger, Greggs and other popular locations -- useful, if you're trying to save your Virgin Mobile allowance or you find yourself in an area with poor signal.

In less than two weeks, Apple Music arrives for consumers, but it still has some serious problems. Many in the industry are predicting the biggest digital music launch in history, but Apple hasn't even achieved its primary stated goal of de-fragmenting the music market. To illustrate, the article points out that Apple Music catalog is currently missing the current most popular artist (Adele), the most popular artist of the past decade (Taylor Swift), and the most popular artist of all time (The Beatles). The company is also promising a three-month free trial period. Great for customers, but not great for musicians, who won't see a dime from that trial, regardless of how much their music is being played. Apple has likely made you-scratch-my-back deals with the major publishers, but indies have no bargaining power. They've been hesitant to jump on board, and that only decreases the selection. Add to that the complications by DRM, Apple Connect, and the new service flat out not working on some music devices (competitors to Apple, now that they own Beats), and you have a recipe for yet another troubled streaming site.

An anonymous reader writes with a report from Help Net Security which assigns some numbers to the lucrative fraud-by-phone business in the U.S. -- and it's not just the most naive who are vulnerable. "Phone fraud continues to threaten enterprises across industries and borders, with the leading financial institutions' call centers exposed to more than $9 million to potential fraud each year," says the article. "Pindrop analyzed several million calls for threats, and found a 30 percent rise in enterprise attacks and more than 86.2 million attacks per month on U.S. consumers. Credit card issuers receive the highest rate of fraud attempts, with one in every 900 calls being fraudulent."
What's been your experience with fraudulent robocalls? I've been getting them on a near-daily basis -- fake credit card alerts, "computer support" malware-install attempts, and more -- for a few years now, which makes whitelisting seem attractive. ("Bridget from account services" has been robo-calling a lot lately, and each time she says it is my final notice.) My biggest worry is that the people behind these scams, like spammers, will hire copywriters who can fool many more people.

Taylor Swift has a lot of clout in the streaming music world, it seems. Just hours after the singer railed against Apple for declining to pay royalties during Music's 3-month trials, Apple's Eddy Cue has promised that his company will pay musicians "even during [the] customer's free trial period." That includesindie artists, he says. It's not clear what prompted the apparent change of heart (beyond the obvious public relations problem), but it wasn't hard to see turnaround as a possibility. Apple has been positioning Music as a sort of anti-Spotify that courts the artists who don't like the streaming status quo, such as Swift -- it wasn't going to succeed if those same performers jumped ship, whatever the reason.
Update: Cue tells Recode that Swift's letter, and pressure from other artists, prompted the change. He reached out to Tim Cook to make the change, and told Swift herself about the new policy. As for how Apple is compensating artists during trials? Cue isn't divulging the exact rate, but he says that it's a per-stream payout rather than the usual revenue percentage. About the only thing up in the air is whether or not Swift and indie labels will offer their full catalogs to Apple Music. If you ask Cue, it's simply too soon to know.

Your iPhone gives you weather forecasts right from the get-go, but it's now ready to shape those forecasts as well. Dark Sky has given its iOS app a bigoverhaul that, if you like, uses the barometer on your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus to contribute pressure readings. The hope is that these will dramatically improve short-term forecasts in the future -- you'll know that it's about to rain because iPhones nearby gave you a heads-up. There have been apps that crowdsourced pressure data before, but rarely with the intent to directly improve forecasts -- and not on the scale of Dark Sky, one of iOS' best-known weather tools.

Apple is reportedly planning its second Apple Watch, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The Apple Watch 2 will allegedly feature a FaceTime video camera, which will be integrated into the top bezel of the watch.
Following the rollout of watchOS 2.0 at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, the software will allow users to answer FaceTime Audio calls from the watch.
According to 9to5mac, it seems likely that the second device will come in 2016.
Apple is also allegedly planning to integrate a new wireless chipset into the watch, to help it work independently without an iPhone.
In addition, Apple is hoping to improve the watch’s battery life, while adding more advanced hardware features.
There are currently a wide range of Apple Watch versions, including the Sport and Steel additions, but Apple is also hoping to launch new models with its second generation device.
The firm is reportedly looking at introducing new models that will be priced between $1,000 and $10,000.

Determined to try Apple Music and its accompanying Beats 1 radio the very moment they're available on June 30th? The streaming service's senior director, Ian Rogers, is happy to help those early adopter impulses. He says that iOS 8.4 (and thus Apple Music) will be available at 11AM Eastern on that day, and Beats 1 will go on the air one hour later. It's not clear what you'll hear if you tune in to the station right away, but the first slate of programming will include an interview with Eminem as well as appearances from everyone from Cara Delevigne to (unsurprisingly) Beats brand co-founder Dr. Dre.

It's hard to expect much from Typo, a company that was co-founded by Ryan Seacrest and whose legal tango with BlackBerry has forced it to stop selling phone keyboards. But with its new iPad keyboard, Typo has at least proven it's worth keeping an eye on. For $189, you get a Bluetooth keyboard that actually feels like a decent laptop keyboard, as well as a cover to protect your iPad. There's no shortage of iPad keyboards on the market, but Typo's offering might be compelling to anyone who wants a premium laptop-like experience with their iPad. The only problem? It's far too expensive for what you get.

Don't like that your Galaxy S6 conks out before you're finished for the day? Samsung might offer some relief in the future. Its scientists have developedlithium-ion battery technology that promises much longer-lasting power packs. They use a silicon anode (which promises much more capacity than a typical battery), but grow layers of graphene on top to improve the density and longevity that would otherwise suffer. In experiments, they got batteries that were 1.5 to 1.8 times denser than what you get today. If your smartphone barely makes it 12 hours before giving up the ghost, this would theoretically give you 21 hours -- enough that you wouldn't have to panic if you forgot to plug in before bedtime.

BlackBerry's introducing a $1 privacy subscription for folks who continue to useMessenger on iOS, Android and its own platform. It will totally replace the old "timed and retracted messages" option, with "private chat" feature as its main draw. Private chats strip everyone's name and icon in that window and automatically disappear after a certain period of inactivity to protect people from busybodies who love going through someone else's phone and -- hurts to admit they exist, but they do -- backstabbers. In addition to private chat, the subscription also gives users the power to edit messages and includes the old timed and retracted messaging features.

Facebook's about to make it easier for you to find and share links while you're on the move. The social network has updated its iPhone application with a new feature that lets users search for articles, videos and other web content using keywords. As pictured above, typing a couple of words about what you're looking will bring up a list of related links -- which can then be viewed and shared with your Facebook friends, directly from the app. For now, the feature is only available to people who have an iPhone, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see this on Facebook's Android app in the near future.

Last year, Microsoft expanded its Office 365 productivity suite with Sway, a service that gave users a simple way to create and publish content on the internet. The only caveat was you could only use it via a web app. As of today, however, those of you with an iPhone or iPad can start using Sway to build, edit and share a bunch of content -- including, but not limited to, interactive reports, presentations and personal stories. It's all free too, so there's no need to worry about having an Office 365 subscription. Microsoft also revealed Sway for Windows 10 will be coming this summer, around the time its new operating system launches across the world.

Early adopters of iOS 9 beta 2 have discovered a new feature that will temporarily delete apps from overloaded devices when there isn't enough space to install system updates. Many users with the smaller 8GB and 16GB iPhones reportedly had difficulty fitting the last upgrade onto their mobile devices. And while iOS 9 is only a fraction of the size of iOS 8 (they're 1.3 GB and 4.3 GB, respectively), Apple is clearly trying to nip similar complaints in the bud this time around. The new feature will of course reinstall the deleted app once the update has completed -- plus, presumably, any user data that was deleted along with the app itself.

Samsung isn't synonymous with extra-thin smartphones -- that distinction usually goes to Chinese vendors like Gionee or Oppo. However, you may have to rethink that reputation very shortly. Samsung's as yet unannounced Galaxy A8 has just been approved by China's telecom regulator TENAA, and the Android smartphone is unquestionably Samsung's thinnest yet at just over 5.9mm (0.23 inches) thick. Suddenly, the 6.3mm Galaxy A7 seems downright chunky.

America’s mixed feelings on its relationship with the Confederate flag has led to a controversial decision from Apple to pull many games that contain it.
The flag, a symbol of the American South, is considered by many to have racist associations owing to its origins from the American Civil War and the South’s attempt to separate the seven ‘slave states’ from the rest of the Union.
Others, however, say it represents America’s heritage and serves as an important historical reminder.
With the debate currently a hot topic on the other side of the Atlantic – particularly after the recent South Carolina shootings – an increasing number of organisations have vetoed its use. Warner, for instance, says it will no longer license Dukes of Hazzard poroducts that show the symbol – the most famous of which is the iconic orange ‘General Lee’ Dodge Charger.
Apple now appears to have joined them, with many developers including Hexwar and Game Labs, saying that their titles which include the flag in various capacities have been pulled from sale.
Apple boss Tim Cook himself has even addressed the issue on Twitter.
“We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines," Apple told Touch Arcade. In a separate statement to TechCrunch it added: “We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.”
The application of this principle has been questioned, however, with dissenting voices claiming that some of the pulled titles simply used the flag in its historical context and should not have been removed as a result.

And we wonder why companies are increasingly shying away from the triple-A game space…
Bethesda has announced that recent iOS release Fallout Shelter managed to top the game charts in no less than 48 separate countries. It was the most downloaded app of any kind in 25 countries.
It remains the no.1 most downloaded game on the App Store worldwide, while I ranked in the top five highest grossing games in 37 countries – pipping Candy Crush Saga in the process.
In week one total daily play sessions exceeded 70m.
“We play games on our phones all the time, and have always wanted to make one,” Bethesda game director Todd Howard said. “To have our first mobile game be enjoyed by so many is stunning. It just shows that gamers appreciate more depth and being treated fairly. It also shows people love Fallout as much as we do.”

Today Google revealed an updated version of its Google Play Developer Program Policies. There aren't actually all that many changes or additions, but those that are present are quite interesting. Google is clamping down on the problem of impersonation, making it clearer that it is not permissible to mislead users by imitating other apps, making false claims, or suggesting endorsements that do not exist. One of the more intriguing changes to the document sees Google calling on developers to show sensitivity to evens such as natural disasters, war, and death. Any apps or other content that attempt to benefit by exploiting such events are explicitly banned.

After a few weeks in preview, Microsoft Office is now available for Android smartphones. Despite Microsoft's mobile-first, cloud-first philosophy, it has actually taken some time to bring the world's most popular office suite to Android phones — it joins the tablet version of the suite that was released last year. Just like the tablet editions, the phone versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint won't cost you a penny, allowing for the viewing and editing of a range of files when on the move. There is a cloud focus with support for not only OneDrive, but also Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box, and Microsoft says it has made changes based on the feedback received during the preview period.

Wondering how you'd exchange info between smartwatches when their displays are so small? Apple thinks it has an easy answer: make the same gestures you already use to greet your friends. The tech firm has applied for a patent on a system that exchanges data between wearables (presumably Apple Watches) whenever both people make a similar greeting gesture, such as a handshake, bow or fist bump. The watches would only need to use their motion sensors and short-range wireless to tell that you're getting cozy -- you wouldn't need to tap the screen at all. Devices could also swap different kinds of data depending on the exact gesture and how well you know the other person, so you'd only share contact info if you're grabbing hands for the first time. There's no guarantee that Apple will roll this feature into the Watch any time soon, but it strikes us as a very logical (and, dare we say it, handy) upgrade.

When Apple first revealed iTunes Match -- the service that lets you add your own, non-Apple purchased music to iTunes -- the 25,000 song limit probably seemed huge. That was way back in 2011, however, and Apple VP Eddy Cuehas revealed that when iOS 9 arrives this fall, Match will support up to 100,000 songs. Cue reminded followers that Apple Music will also get Match-like capabilities, meaning you can fill in any missing streaming music with your own tracks. Though the service will launch tomorrow with a 25,000 song limit, it too will support 100,000 songs when iOS 9 comes out.

Yes, Google hates lag on smartphones as much as you do -- enough so that the search giant has a robot dedicated to spotting that delay between your finger input and what happens on screen. Meet the Chrome TouchBot, anOptoFidelity-made machine that gauges the touchscreen latency on Android and Chrome OS devices. As you can see in the clip below, the bot's artificial digit pokes, prods and swipes the display in a series of web-based tests (which you can try yourself) that help pinpoint problems in both code and hardware. This isn't the only gadget monitoring device lag at Google, but it could be the most important given how much the company's software revolves around touch. Don't be surprised if this automaton boosts the responsiveness of Mountain View's future platforms.
