If everything goes according to plan, "early 2014" should see the debut of FTL: Advanced Edition, a free expansion for intergalactic roguelike FTL: Faster Than Light adding a new alien species and new subsystems for your ship, among a host of other features.
Like oversized metal locusts, the Lanius are driven by an insatiable desire to consume. Unlike locusts however, the Lanius subsist on metals and have no need for biological processes such as eating or breathing. While a lack of air might choke out less virulent species, the Lanius just shrug it off, completely removing their need for functioning life support systems on board a ship.
Surprisingly, this apathy toward oxygen may be a beneficial adaptation as members of the Lanius species innately drain all oxygen from the air surrounding them. As you'd expect, this makes them poor diplomats but excellent candidates for a boarding party.
Along with the new race comes new subsystems and drones. These include a new battery backup subsystem which provides reserve power in a pinch and a drone designed specifically to hunt and destroy other drones. Helpfully, developer Subset Games will introduce a third layout option for every ship found in FTL that should offer a bit more room for your new gadgets.
If booting up your laptop or desktop computer seems too strenuous, you'll be happy to know that FTL: Advanced Edition will also be appearing on iOS, marking the game's first appearance on a mobile platform.

The 4.6 per cent loss on stock price value is due to investors who are nervous about the company’s mobile future.
Even though analysts have estimated that Samsung will see profit growth in its mobile sector, it will likely be lagging behind that of the previous quarter, reports TechCrunch.
The company has kicked off 2014 on the wrong foot, with a 4.6 per cent loss of stock price, resulting in more than $8 billion decrease in market value.
Investors are losing faith in the company’s mobile business, which it is reckoned future gain s in the sector are soon to come to an end.
One of the main factors that is impacting Samsung, is the price pressure entering smartphone sales – with devices such as Google’s Nexus setting the high, with higher-end devices at lower-end prices.
Google has also recently reduced the price of its Moto X – one of its flagship devices - to $399, plus offers value for money with the Moto G priced at $179.
To compete, Samsung would have to push prices lower than usual as budget devices become increasingly important, dragging down the overall profit of the mobile space.

Sony may release a smartphone running Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS this year, according to a new report.
The Information claims that Sony has already developed a prototype Windows Phone handset and held preliminary discussions with Microsoft.
Sony has exclusively made smartphones powered by Android software for almost four years, but it appears that may change this year. According to a ‘person involved in the talks’, a Sony Windows phone could launch as soon as mid-2014.
The report also suggests that Microsoft plans to work with China’s ZTE to launch low-end Windows Phone handsets in Asia, Europe and the US.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has launched on iOS and Android for a mere Ł2.99 / $4.99, a fraction of the price of its console brethren. This mobile port includes all of the console game's content with new additions such as a brand new World Tour and Shenmue lead Ryo Hazuki piloting a mobile arcade cabinet that transforms into a spaceship and hovercraft. This is actually Hazuki's second appearance in the kart-racing series as he was featured as DLC in the previous Sega racer, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, in which he drove his trademark forklift.Astute viewers will notice Hazuki's license plate teases "Shen 3," but unfortunately this is only a joke rather than an actual hint of a real announcement. "Don't get too excited over the number plate," noted developer Sumo Digital on the Sega forums. "It is of course a tongue in cheek reference to just how long it's taking for Sega to get that third part out."Eurogamer features editor Martin Robinson was a big fan of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed upon its console launch at the end of 2012. "This manages to be more than just a tribute to the great and good of Sega's past - it does enough to earn its own place alongside them," he wrote in his review of the PS3 version of the game.

The tablet maker is making a detachable mobile game controller called the Gamevice
Wikipad, maker of the eponymous 7-inch Android tablet, announced today its entry into the mobile controllers market as well. The company is creating a detachable mobile games controller called the Gamevice, which offers a "flex bridge" design so that the controller can collapse and expand to fit a variety of mobile devices.
Similar to a modern console controller, the Gamevice features dual analog sticks, both L1/R1 and L2/R2 analog buttons, an analog D-pad, and four analog action buttons. A release date and price has not yet been set.
"We value the opinions of our community. We heard from many people who either expressed love for the Wikipad 7" or who already owned an iPad or an Android or Windows 8 mobile device and wanted us to make a controller that worked for them. We are currently working on versions for Windows 8 and Android devices. We have not forgotten other important OS systems and we hope to announce additional support for those in the near future," said Fraser Townley, President of Wikipad, Inc.
While more companies have been announcing specialty controllers for Android and iPhone of late, it's not clear that developers or consumers are actually embracing the new controllers. Mobile developers that GamesIndustry International spoke to on the subject seemed pretty skeptical about the impact these controllers will have.
As for Wikipad, the company today also announced a downloadable update for its main product. The tablet can now be upgraded to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean; the new update brings with it controller support, a copy of Dead Trigger 2 from Madfinger Games and several free games from WildTangent.

With a second movie on the way later this year, How To Train Your Dragon is the star of a new iOS and Facebook game.
Be warned, however – this kids game is just the latest in a long line to feature some eye-watering prices for its in-app-purchases.
Apps Playground reports that Gem packs – the game’s currency – vary in price from Ł2.99 (for 525) all the way up to Ł69.99 (for 11,500).
There’s also the chance to sign up for membership to the School of Dragons for Ł6.99 for one month or Ł57.99 for the year.
The game itself is an MMO of sorts that focuses on actual science learning and also allows players to supplement their PC experience by managing their activities with the associated iOS app.

Clumsy Ninja is the App Store hit which turns the titular assassin into a kind of physics-powered virtual pet.
With so many studios lamenting the current state of the mobile games market, it’s a little surprising to find so few actively trying something different. Many millions of new iOS and Android devices were unwrapped and eagerly filled with new apps this Christmas, and yet, compared to the great flood of infinite runners, free-to-play town builders and other familiar mobile fare, apps like Clumsy Ninja and Toca Hair Salon represent the tiniest trickle. They’re digital toys rather than videogames, and their chart performance suggests that creating interactive entertainment for tablets and mobile needn’t rely on traditional videogame structures. If anything, breaking free of familiar game ideas – of challenge, testing player skill, progression and failstates – opens up a broader, more freeform and ultimately more accessible kind of play. The studios behind these games, NaturalMotion and Toca Boca, appear to have have understood this more than most. Clumsy Ninja, Toca Lab and Toca Hair Salon 2 have been fixtures near the top of the App Store charts for weeks, and for good reason – they are all smartly designed apps with high production values and cheery playfulness at their heart. And yet compared to the number of games going live on the App Store every week, there’s a surprising lack of these playthings. Or at least, there’s a surprising lack of digital toys this good.“There are so many blue oceans – unexplored genres that are ready to be invented or re-invented,” says NaturalMotion CEO Torsten Reil. “We’ve never understood why so many studios just clone other games. You end up competing for the same audience and spending more and more cash on user acquisition. The only way to get off that hamster wheel is to create something new and fresh; and preferably something that can’t be easily copied.”

The NFC wristband lets users make common actions on their device just by tapping.
Startup, Haloband is a new way to control features on an Android smartphone in a quick and easy manner.
It integrates six of your most used functions such as unlocking a device, using the flashlight, taking photos, or playing music. Each can be used by tapping a different part of the band on the phone.
The startup company aimed to raise $10,000 on Kickstarter; however have so far managed to pocket $20,028, suggesting that people are eager to get their hands – or wrists – around one of the bands.
NFC-enabled devices are increasingly popular, with more than half a billion expected to be sold during 2014 – so it is not surprising that the demand for gadgets that utilise this function is also rising.
The silicon band will be available in three sizes and seven colours. It will work with an Android app that ensures only the person wearing the band can access the phones functions.
Creators of Haloband, said: “Smartphones are amazing, but complicated for some. We aim to make them easy and simple for most people. Since some technology has been too cool for some, we aim to make it sexy and fashionable.”
The band is not restricted to smartphones, it can also be used to access door that require security cards, check-in to events using NFC, and pass out your information to other phones.
It is also the first NFC band to include a free online cloud account available all over the world.

Fewer than half are thought to be operable.
Talk of an Apple iWatch has been around for more than a year, and yet no such device has materialised.
Back in July, Apple CEO Tim Cook had supposedly considered totally scrapping the troublesome ticker due to 'hard engineering and design problems.'
Six months later and nothing as changed, as DigiTimes reports the Apple iWatch is struggling from the intricate metal injection moulding process, which is resulting in fewer than 50 per cent production rates.
Apple isn't alone, however, with Qualcomm's Toq wrist gizmo said to be suffering from the same issue.
The smartwatch market is becoming increasingly crowded, as Nike and ZTE are among the companies releasing new products this year – in fact, ZTE hasdiscussed smartshoes.

AT&T is clearly worried that T-Mobile's recent success may be coming at its own expense -- it just launched a promotion that gives T-Mobile customers up to $450 to switch to Big Blue. The deal offers converts a minimum of $200 once they've subscribed to a smartphone plan, plus up to $250 more if they trade in an existing phone. There's no mention of when the promo will end, although it's described as a "limited time" offer. The deal may be tempting if you're already inclined to jump ship, although you'll want to do the math before you leave. While AT&T will now cut your bill when off-contract, T-Mobile's contract-free rates could be lower depending on the device you buy; it may be cheaper in the long run.

When Motorola said that a CDMA version of the Moto G would reach the US in January, it was being overly cautious. Best Buy has confirmed that it's already selling the Verizon edition of the budget smartphone in its retail stores; as soon as a store has inventory, you can pick one up. And it's cheap, too. At $100 off-contract, Verizon's Moto G is less expensive than both its GSM equivalent and many slower, smaller devices. You won't get to pick up the handset until after New Year's Day, but we have a hunch that it will be worth the wait.
Update: If you're not willing to make a pilgrimage to Best Buy, Verizon will begin selling the Moto G through its online store on January 9th at the same contract-free $100 price. Retail stores should get their units in the "coming weeks."

So Lenovo announced a whole bunch of all-in-ones, you say? You'll have to be a little more specific than that. In addition to unveiling a trio of Windows-based models, the company announced two more that run Android. These include the consumer-friendly N308 and the ThinkVision 28, a 4K machine destined for the workplace (pictured above). Starting with the consumer model (this is CES, after all), it costs a reasonable $450 and, accordingly, comes with some fairly middling specs -- notably, a 19-inch, 1,600 x 900 display and a spinning hard drive with up to 500 gigs of space. That big display aside, you're basically looking at an oversized tablet, with Android 4.2 installed and a quad-core Tegra 4 SoC running the show. Like other all-in-ones Lenovo's released over the past year, this one's portable, with a battery rated for three hours. At 10 pounds, though, give or take, it's actually a good deal lighter than that other portable desktop Lenovo just announced.
As for the ThinkVision model, it's crowned by a 28-inch, 3,840 x 2,160 display, allowing you to poke around Android 4.3 at a screen density of 157 pixels per inch. Note that the OS interface is actually upscaled from a 1080p resolution, but we were told that all 4K content is played in its native resolution. Additionally, the machine uses NFC and a "tap to connect" feature to pair devices, though you could also hook them up using one of the four USB ports, three HDMI sockets or the micro-USB connection.
Want the same screen quality, but can do without the NFC and Tegra guts? Lenovo is also selling the ThinkVision Pro2840m, which has a similar 28-inch, 3,840 x 2,160 screen (and a staid, less flexible design). As it turns out, the monitor arrives first, priced at $799 with shipments expected to begin in April. The ThinkVision 28 will follow in July, with prices starting at $1,199.

Hello Games has revealed that it's planning to release Joe Danger Infinity on 9th January. The developer noted the release date in an interview with Polygon, where studio founder Sean Murray explained that the team was still on schedule despite its office getting flooded. "We're here in a cramped little upstairs room, with makeshift PCs and water slowly rising to the electrics ... because we have a game to release!"ORIGINAL STORY: And you were worried four-person indie developer Hello Games had taken on too much with ultra ambitious science fiction game No Man's Sky. The Guildford studio has just revealed it's been working in secret on a new iOS game called Joe Danger Infinity - and it's out soon."We've been incredibly proud of Joe Danger Touch since we released it last January," Hello Games' Sean Murray told Eurogamer."The success it achieved (number one on the App Store in lots of countries, like the US and UK) totally took us by surprise. Right at the end of his life, Joe has had probably his biggest success."Stevie [Burgess] was the main programmer on that, and I guess he always felt we had some unfinished business on iOS. It felt that Joe Danger Touch was something that had already existed on console, and he wanted us to do something totally new, just for iOS - where so so many people were enjoying it."We went back and tried making a Joe Danger that's completely fresh and new. It's coming really soon, it's called Joe Danger Infinity and it's genuinely beautiful. I'm super proud."

Eight and 12-inch devices combine movies and education.
The trend of children using mobiles could become a lot more common, as DreamWorks partners with kids' product creator Fuhu to create the Android-powered DreamTab.
The animation studio is responsible for huge movies including Shrek andMadagascar, and believes combining technology and filmmaking has made the eight and 12-inch tablets unique.
Jim Mitchell, CEO of Fuhu, said: "Similar to the entrepreneurial nature of Fuhu, there is a founder-led spirit of innovation at DreamWorks Animation which permeates the studio and inspires them to create compelling content, regardless of the medium. They are true experts in crafting exceptional family entertainment with a unique understanding of and passion for technology."
The DreamTab has been co-developed by the company and goes beyond a content deal. The devices promise to offer:
* Fuhu's Wings Learning System education – reading, writing, maths – service
* Parental controls, which allow adults to set time limits, virtual currency, locks and syncs with their own devices
* Video art lessons with DreamWorks animators, the likes of who have been responsible for Shrek and Kung Fu Panda
* Nabi Play – home to children's shows from DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Disney and Cartoon Network
* A dedicated app store for apps, games, music, films, e-books and more
* NFC
* Android Kit Kat
* 16GB and 32GB memory
* Cloud sync
Jim Mainard, head of digital strategy, DreamWorks Animation, added: "Fuhu grabbed our attention when they came on the market because they single-handedly made a quantum leap forward in revolutionising the kids tech space; as their company grew, we saw an incredible opportunity to join with them to take the overall tablet experience to a whole new level
"The DreamTab posed a compelling challenge not only to our filmmakers and artists to create content for this new medium, but also for our engineers and innovators who worked hand-in-hand with the Fuhu team to develop the consumer-facing side of this groundbreaking technology."
DreamTab will be showcased at CES this week and released in spring.

Beamdog and Overhaul Games' Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate 2 isn't too far away from reaching the iPad finally, after being stuck in Apple's review process for the last month. According to a tweet posted yesterday by Beamdog Creative Director Trent Oster, the RPG re-release has had its in-app purchases approved, and "should hit soon."
The iOS and Android versions were originally due to arrive shortly after the game hit PC and Mac last November, so it's been a bit of a wait for mobile heroes-to-be. Considering Android has yet to receive Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, let alone the sequel, we suspect that version won't hit so shortly. We've reached out to Beamdog to see if we can gather some more info.
Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition, priced $25 on PC and Mac, brings a number of additions including four new heroes for your party, higher-def graphics, remastered artwork, and enhanced multiplayer. It also features the Throne of Bhaal expansion, and a follow-up to the first game's Black Pits arena-based campaign.

Over $1bn worth of sales in December alone to make it the most successful month EVER.
Fresh from its announcement that Beyonce's album was the fastest-selling to ever hit iTunes, Apple has revealed its devout customers spent over $10 billion on the App Store in 2013.
Sales passed $1 billion in December alone as users downloaded more than three billion apps to make it the most successful month in the history of the App Store.
The phenomenal figures mean developers have now earned $15 billion on the iOS marketplace, with Candy Crush and Puzzle & Dragons recognised as success stories.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services, said: "We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store. The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014."

Along with the new devices, Samsung has bagged some exclusive content deals that offer out-of-the-box pre-paid, long-term subscription offers to news, social media and cloud storage providers such as Bloomberg, Blurb, Dropbox, Evernote, LinkedIn, LiveSport.TV, NY Times and Sketchbook Pro.
Stanford continued: “We are delighted to team up with so many of the world’s best mobile content and service providers to bring our customers industry-leading apps and services. We are demonstrating our commitment to our mobile users by providing them with unmatched productivity right out of the box.”
Samsung also recently released the NFC-based Galaxy Camera 2, with a design that it says matches up-to-date smartphones.

And apps have now been downloaded more than 3m times.
The Beeb was keen on pushing live events to mobiles in 2013, demonstrated with its efforts for Glastonbury and Wimbledon.
Indeed, the latter worked wonders for BBC Sport, as 64 per cent of web traffic came from mobiles during the final.
Now, the division says mobiles fuelled 72 per cent of site visits on Boxing Day and 70 per cent on New Year's Day.
The devices brought in more than three million unique visitors on Boxing Day, reaching the three million milestone for the first time only to continue rising to hit a new record 3.1 million uniques on New Year's Day.
Tablets were key contributors, accounting for a record 1.3 million uniques on Boxing Day, surging to 1.5 million for the first time on New Year's Day.
The BBC Sport mobile app for mobiles has now been downloaded more than three million times across iOS and Android.
Chris Condron, head of product for BBC Sport, said: "These figures highlight just how essential handheld devices have become to our audiences. We’ve seen this trend grow throughout the year, culminating in record figures over the festive period when tablets and mobiles are a popular gift in many homes across the UK.
"We’ll continue to iterate and improve our digital services throughout a massive year of sport in 2014, making sure people get the best possible experience on any device they want, wherever they want."
Sister department BBC iPlayer has also reported a bumper mobile Christmas, claiming 2013 was year of the tablet.

While Samsung has held back from launching a new flagship smartphone at CES 2014, Sony has gone full steam ahead with two new devices.
The Xperia Z1 Compact is, as you may have guessed, a mini version of Sony’s flagship Xperia Z1 smartphone. It features pretty much all the same specs as the 5-inch Z1 but packs it all into a device with a slightly smaller 4.3-inch display. It also has a slightly smaller 2300mAh battery compared to the Z1’s 3000mAh one.
The Z1S also comes with similar specs to the Z1, but it has a higher IP58 waterproof rating so it can be submerged into water for more time and depth.
It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and has 2GB or RAM. There’s 32GB of inbuilt storage and a Full HD 5-inch Triluminos display powered by Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2.
As well as smartphones, Sony has unveiled a host of other products at CES 2014, including a 4K camcorder priced at under $2,000 (Ł1,220), which the company says is 46 per cent smaller and 67 per cent lighter than previous models.
In the TV stakes Sony has unveiled a new form factor called ‘Wedge’. The new TVs have deep, triangular sides which are thicker at the bottom.
This extra space makes way for better speakers in-built into the device to provide ‘better bass, a wider sonic range, and clearer vocals’ than a common pair of speakers.

CD Projekt Red is partnering with Fantasy Flight Games for The Witcher Adventure Game, a tabletop board game also planned for iOS and Android tablets.
The adventure casts four players as four characters from the world of the books and video games: the Witcher himself Geralt of Rivia, sorceress Triss Merigold, well-connected bard Dandelion, and dwarven leader Yarpen Zigrin. Players compete and collaborate across a world map, completing quest cards and advancing their characters through customizable skill paths.
Players can cooperate or clash through combat, diplomacy, and magic. CD Projekt Red aims to cater to Witcher fans new to tabletop games and dice-rolling experts alike, the latter of whom may recognize designer Ignacy Trzewiczek from his previous projects Stronghold and 51st State.
The game is not yet available for pre-order, though interested parties can sign up for further updates on its web page.
CD Projekt Red plans to release The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2014. Series fans hungry for more of the fantasy universe can also look forward to a Dark Horse comic book series starting in March.

The Android and Kindle versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are now available to purchase.
Originally announced in late November, the remastered version of the 2004 classic was released on iOS in December.
Now the game can also be purchased for Android tablets and smartphones via the Google Play store, as long as you have one ofthese supported devices.
The title supports all HID-compliant USB and Bluetooth game controllers as well as MOGA controllers.
The Kindle version, meanwhile, will only work on the Kindle Fire HDX 7.0 and 8.9. It will not work on the standard Kindle Fire HD.
The mobile version of San Andreas is priced at Ł4.99 / €5.99 / $6.99 / $7.49 AUS.
A version for Windows Phone is still in development, with Rockstar telling gamers to "look for it soon".
The game was originally released for PS2 in October 2004. In our Grand Theft Auto San Andreas review, we said it "delivers an unbelievable amount of new features while polishing up all the things that the GTA series already did well."

We've heard a number of rumors recently about Nokia's Normandy phone, which will supposedly ship with an Android-based operating system. Shots of the handset, with its lack of a hardware shutter trigger, capacitive buttons and LED flash, appeared back in December, and now mobile tipster @Evleaks has postedwhat could be the first shots of Nokia's alternative take on Google's open-source platform. Three leaked renders of the device show support for dual SIMs, lockscreen notifications, a dialer screen and what appears to be a custom version of Skype's mobile app.
Nokia's Normandy project is said to be a low-end Asha equivalent that runs a forked version of Android, meaning it won't be associated with Google's apps and services (similar to Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets). As we know, Nokia's mobile business is currently awaiting the all-clear for an acquisition by Microsoft, meaning the project might never see the light of day. The leaked shots suggest Nokia has made significant progress with Normandy, but we'll have to wait and see if the project forms part of its new owner's future plans.

In much the same way that smartphones are trending towards larger screens, it appears that manufacturers like Samsung are experimenting with the same concept in the tablet realm. The company has just introduced its latest (and largest) Android-running Galaxy Note device called the Note Pro 12.2. Announced alongside the Tab Pro 12.2 at CES, the Note Pro offers the same S Pen functionality we've enjoyed on previous devices like the Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 edition, and as usual, you're going to see some refinements in Samsung's firmware and user experience as well. The device will be available in LTE, 3G and WiFi flavors and is expected to launch sometime this quarter in various parts of the world.
As soon as we tried out the new Note Pro, we immediately noticed the size and weight difference compared to Samsung's 10.1-inch offerings. Regardless of how much you trim its bezel, a 12.2-inch tablet simply isn't designed for optimal portability, which means we're more likely to use it as a coffee table device, special projects or conferences in the office. It's just a little too awkward to hold for long periods of time. Aside from that and a glaring weight difference -- 753g (1.66 lbs) on the 12.2, versus 547g (1.21 lbs) on the 10.1 -- we were hard-pressed to find any variation between the 12.2-incher and the Note 10.1 2014 edition; it features the same design, button layout, "leather-like" back and display resolution (2560x1600, for a pixel density of 247 ppi). Other than that, what stands out on the 12.2, which runs Android 4.4 KitKat, is a few key new firmware features like Remote PC and Magazine UX. Continue reading below the gallery and our hands-on video to get more of our impressions.

Windows boasts record sales and increased European market share.
Although lacking specific numbers, Microsoft has grabbed the CES2014 megaphone to shout about its record sales, reports Neowin.
Signs that things were looking up for the company were spattered around the media with reports of Windows Phone shipments growing 156 per cent in November, and the prediction that devs for the platform were set to double to 32 per cent this year.
Sales shot up even more over the festive period, taking the number two OS in some countries, and outselling the iPhone is 24 other markets.
A Microsoft spokesperson, commented: “In the third quarter this year, according to IDC, Windows Phone reinforced its position as a top three smartphone operating system and was the fastest-growing platform among the leading operating systems with 156 per cent year-over-year gain.”
Some of the countries that Windows took the number two spot are Mexico, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Finland, and Czech Republic. Plus a few of the 24 markets where the Windows Phone out-shipped the iPhone were Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The spokesperson continued: “Windows Phone is the number two smartphone operating system in 14 markets, and shipped more than iPhone in 24 markets in Q3. Our portfolio continues to expand: form award-winning flagship devices like the Nokia Lumia 928/1020/1520, to affordable new innovations like the Lumia 520/625/1320 and Huawei W1/W2.”

Boxing management sim Title Bout Championship Boxing 2013 is now available on iPad and Android via the Google Play store. Title Bout 2013 launched on PC, Mac and Linux in June 2013, one month after Out of the Park Developments sold the series to PISD, an independent company that provides OOTP with development libraries used for Out of the Park Baseball.
Title Bout 2013 has players simulating boxing matches, setting up tournaments, training sessions and more in a management simulation/text-adventure-style interface. Much like OOTP Baseball and Sports Interactive's Football Manager series, Title Bout 2013 features a huge database of real-life athletes, sporting over 8,000 fighter records. The management sim is said to be nearly the same on iOS and Android as it is on PC, though it's priced at a moderate $1.99 compared to the current $9.99 price for two PC licenses on the game's site.
Title Bout Championship Boxing has a lengthy history, as it began as a tabletop game created by brothers Jim and Tom Trunzo in the late 1970's, later seeing DOS-based text simulation TKO Boxing in 1990. Comp-U-Sport created Title Fight 2001, a brand later sold to OOTP Developments, which launched Title Bout Championship Boxing 2 and version 2.5 in 2005 and 2008, respectively.

Yasumi Matsuno's Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians features cross-platform online play, and that may affect which platforms it comes to. The tactics game from the Vagrant Story director is only confirmed for iOS and Android curently, but developer Playdek is definitely looking at other platforms, and their policies towards cross-platform play.
We asked Joel Goodman, CEO of tabletop studio Playdek, whether or not that could close off the game from certain platforms.
"It potentially could and it potentially couldn't," Goodman said. "We're not speaking [about] any secrets here, we know for some platforms that will be more feasible to do than on others. At that point, then, we'll have to look at it and say, well, what's the more important part here? Is it that we end up with a platform that has a pragmatic community, and we don't want to do that, or that it's well worth it because it's still a gaming community that we want to address and make sure that they get this product as well."
Asked if it was fair to say it sounded like he was talking about previous-gen and current-gen consoles, Goodman replied, "That would be fair." Well, then.

Sega's iOS adaptation of Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure is out now, and it's priced at $10. Before you rush off thinking you've landed a steal (ho ho ho), you should note this isn't a straight-up port of the 3DS game by any means.
This morning we briefly checked out Rhythm Thief and the Paris Caper - as it's dubbed - thanks to a code provided by Sega, and we've confirmed you need a network connection to play the game at all. This is stated clearly on the game's App Store page, and when we tried to play it on our iPhone 5 in Airplane Mode, we couldn't get past the title screen.
As far as we've established, the game needs a connection to save progress. This is maybe related to a new "accomplices" feature. As you progress along you collect characters as accomplices, although it's easier to think of them as stat boosts you equip. You can also borrow accomplices from other players, including friends that you've registered.
As for the gameplay, there's a ton of new stuff including new mini-games, new rhythm missions, and a choice of wardrobe to clad Phantom R in, etc. However, the 3DS game's main story is apparently stripped down to the rhythm game missions in this iOS version, with much smaller bits of exposition in between them - that may be a good or bad thing depending on your perspective, really.

Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers, the most recent video game adaptation of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, has grown a bit larger with the release of a third deck pack.
Like the game's prior two deck packs, this addition is priced at $3 and adds two new decks to Magic 2014. "Warsmith" is described as a red and white deck bolstered by beneficial artifacts and spells designed to improve the effectiveness of your virtual cardboard troops. "Hunting Season," by contrast, is a green deck that relies on oversized creatures to trample your foes. If sheer size doesn't work, and your armies are still being cut to pieces, don't worry: This deck is designed to allow players to quickly summon new creatures at a moment's notice.
The third deck pack for Magic 2014 should be available now on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam and the Android and iOS app stores. If you can't find it on your platform of choice, wait a bit, then check again. According to the deck pack's developers, "launch timing may vary by platform and region."

New device to be unveiled by April.
Samsung has been struggling as of late, cutting $8 billion off its market value, and losing market dominance to Apple in China.
Meaning it is under even more pressure to release something special for its next mobile device. Maybe an eye scanner similar to the iPhone 5S’ fingerprint scanner could be just the ticket.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a lot to live up – which is why Lee Young Hee, executive VP of Samsung’s mobile business is responding to what people want.
She said: “Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility.”
There were already rumours surround retina technology as the NY Times reported earlier last year that the S5 could possibly sport an eye scrolling feature, to prevent time-consuming swiping when reading messages and other media.
She didn’t spill too many beans to Bloomberg at CES, but did say that the company will focus more on the device’s display, and feel of the cover.
It was also revealed that the new device will be released along side a new Samsung smartwatch. WHY???

Apple and Samsung’s CEOs have greed to attend a mediation session to discuss settling a legal battle over designs and technologies of their mobile devices.
Apple’s Tim Cook and Samsung’s Oh-Hyun Kwon will meet by or before February 19th.
The agreement was made in response to a court order to submit a proposal for settlement discussion before a new trial begins in March.
The legal battle began back in 2011 when Apple accused Samsung of copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung later claimed Apple used its technologies without permissions.
In the last two years, Apple and Samsung have gone to trial twice in San Jose, California federal court, with juries awarding Apple a totally of around $930 million.

Samsung has admitted that the public didn't see much difference between theGalaxy S III and S4 smartphones and said the S5 would likely pack a substantially different design. Exec Lee Young Hee told Bloomberg that the new flagship will go "back to basics," adding that "mostly, it's about the display and the feel of the cover." It'll also arrive with a brand-new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which itself will have "more advanced functions" and an improvement to what she called "the bulky design." Other revelations include a possible eye-scanner in the handset for greater security, though that's still being studied.
Farther down the road, Samsung said that it's looking at significant changes for the Galaxy Note 3's successor in order to target it at professionals who are "willing to pay more for handsets." As such, it may pack a three-sided display, like the so-called Youm prototype we saw last year at CES 2013, allowing users to read messages from oblique angles. Finally, Lee revealed that the Galaxy S 5 would arrive in March or April after Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Considering we saw the Galaxy S III and S4 around the same period in previous years, however, that's not a big shocker.

UPDATE: Rhythm Thief's iOS launch has turned out to be short-lived - publisher Sega has pulled the game from the App Store after discovering an "unexpected problem"."An unexpected problem has been discovered in the version of Rhythm Thief that was available yesterday on the Apple App Store, so we have removed it temporarily from the store as we work on a fix," a spokesperson explained. "Our development team is hard at work to update the game and it will be back online very soon."Anyone who has purchased the game already will be able to play it as soon as it is back. We will keep you updated and we thank you in advance for your continued patience."Rhythm Thief launched on iOS last night - there's no word as yet on when it will return.ORIGINAL STORY: Rhythm Thief & the Paris Caper - the iOS spin-off of the 3DS rhythm game Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure - is out now, Sega has announced.Temporarily priced at Ł6.99 / $9.99, this iOS adaptation isn't a straight port of the 3DS game as much of the storytelling has been omitted in favour of getting straight to the action. It's not entirely stripped down though, as the iOS game features a lot of new content including 20 original songs, 50 new missions, new mini-games, and an a new "accomplice" feature in which you can recruit teammates and even borrow them from friends. This Pokemon-esque trading feature comes at a cost, however, as the App Store noted that "a network connection is required to play." This may not be a big deal if you're on the surface, but you won't be able to play this during underground tube passages or on plane rides. We've contacted Sega about the possibility of an offline mode being added as an update and are awaiting reply.

An 'unexpected problem' forced removal.
Just yesterday, Sega released Rhythm Thief and the Paris Caper for iOS, which combines music, puzzles and adventure with characters Raphael and his dog Fondue.
It has since been removed from the App Store, however, due to a unexpected batch of bugs surfacing.
Sega's official statement says: "An unexpected problem has been discovered in the version of Rhythm Thief that was available yesterday on the Apple App Store, so we have removed it temporarily from the store as we work on a fix.
"Our development team is hard at work to update the game and it will be back online very soon. Anyone who has purchased the game already will be able to play it as soon as it is back. We will keep you updated and we thank you in advance for your continued patience."
During yesterday's launch of the Ł6.99 game, Sega's digital business VP, Chris Olson, said: "Rhythm Thief & The Paris Caper fits well with our ongoing mission to bring diverse, high quality titles to the mobile games space."

The animation teaches the importance of building a strong foundation via active participation.
DreamWorks - who has just released the DreamTab ANdroid tablet for kids - and Plumzi has released an interactive appisode titled VeggieTales Appisode: 3 Builders for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The exclusive animation is based on the TV episode The Little House that Stood – it showcases a new form of story-driven entertainment that challenges children by putting them in control.
Viewers can use voice, tap, tilt plus more actions to participate in the episode and learn valuable life lessons from the VeggieTales characters Bob, Larry, and Mr. Lunt.
They can talk to Bob through the microphone and listen to his funny responses, tap the screen to make prints in wet cement, and drag materials to rebuild the dam to prevent CabbageVille from flooding.
Chris Hewish, head of global interactive at DreamWorks Animation, said: “We believe appisodes are an exciting new form of entertainment and we are proud to bring our first VeggieTales appisode to market with Plumzi.
“Plumzi has built a unique process and technology to quickly adapt existing animated series into immersive appisodes, which will allow kids everywhere to participate in the story of our beloved series.”
All the while entertaining the kids watching, it also reinforces child development and learning, plus allows parents to track the child’s progress in each of the activities.
VeggieTales Appisode: 3 Builders is available for $4.99 from the App Store now.

Glu Mobile has released a RoboCop game on iOS that ties in to next month’s movie return for the Detroit law enforcer.
An android version is due for release on January 15th.
The game is free-to-play and takes the form of a cover shooter in which the resurrected Alex Murphy is undergoing a training simulation.
The RoboCop series debuted in 1987 with a film of the same name and went on to produce two, less successful movie sequels in 1990 and 1993 as well as a less-violent 1994 TV series.
The new film, which is due out in the UK on Februay 7th, looks to resurrect the brand, giving RoboCop a new look in the process.

Game of Thrones: Ascent, which was chosen as one of the best Facebook games of 2013, is headed for iOS and Android next. Developer Disruptor Beam's CEO, Jon Radoff, told Gamezebo that the move will conclude "in the near future."
Those who started the game on Facebook will be able to link their accounts for cross-platform play, or start on mobile from scratch. Game of Thrones: Ascentcasts players as nobles in the popular world penned by George R.R. Martin.
A new Game of Thrones title was also announced by Walking Dead developer Telltale Games last month. That series is planned to begin sometimes this year, hopefully before winter. Because, y'know.

Remember that talk of a lower-cost Galaxy Note 3? You may be looking at the phone right now. SamMobile claims to have photos of the rumored Galaxy Note 3 Neo (aka Lite), and they show what you'd expect -- a slightly smaller, less advanced version of Samsung's pen-toting flagship. The leak also includes benchmarks that back up rumors of an 8-megapixel camera, a 720p screen and a hexa-core processor with performance between that of the Galaxy S 4 and the full-size Note 3. There's no guarantee that the photos or the specs reflect a shipping product, but there are murmurs of a possible Neo launch at Mobile World Congress in late February; we may not have to wait long to learn more.

The jury's still out on Android gaming (exhibit A: OUYA), but that's not stoppingHuawei from taking a dive into that niche corner of the industry. Its Tegra 4-basedTron mini-console, announced here at CES 2014, pairs a cylindrical-shaped hub with a Bluetooth controller that hews quite closely to the Xbox 360 mold OUYA also went after. Before we get your hopes up though, take note that Tron's for China only -- at least, for now anyway. A Huawei rep did say that the company's looking into further market expansion, but given its track record with smartphones in the US, we have a hard time believing Tron will see these shores anytime soon.
The Tron console itself runs a half-skinned version of Android JellyBean (version 4.2.3) that presents a clean menu overlay with feature tiles for access to games, Huawei's store, video, application, settings and featured titles. That slick menu selection comes to a screeching halt, however, as soon as you attempt to select anything other than games, bringing you face-to-face with Android's ugly underbelly -- much like on the OUYA.

Google has released its first Android device share data for 2014, and it's now clear that many users are flocking to a newer OS version... just not the latest version. While the shiny new KitKat release did climb to 1.4 percent of active devices in January, Jelly Bean was the real winner -- the older software jumped from 54.5 percent in December to 59.1 percent this month. There's no real mystery as to what happened, though. KitKat remains limited to mostly Google hardware, whether it's the Nexus line or Motorola phones; we haven't quite reached that point where large numbers of third-party devices either get KitKat upgrades or ship with the revision pre-installed. That surge may come soon, however, and the team in Mountain View can at least take comfort in knowing that over 60 percent of Android's active customer base is reasonably up to speed.

Marat Fayzullin has released another version of its GameBoy Advance emulator VGBA-Android.
I have just released VGBA-Android 4.3.2, a new version of my GameBoy Advance emulator:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d=com.fms.vgba
In this version, I have added special display effects to simulate vertical scanlines and raster patterns that show up in real LCD displays. So, the old "TV Scanlines" option has been turned into a list selector now. I have also fixed a couple of crashes found in the Google Developer Console logs and added cheats for 6 new games to the Cheatopedia. See below for details.
- Made "Scanline Effect" a list selector, to accommodate multiple effects.
- Added "Vertical Scanlines" option, for vertical scanlines found in old LCDs.
- Added "Raster Effect" option, for LCD-like raster simulation.
- Fixed a crash when surface gets destroyed during display update.
- Fixed a crash when deleting files with special characters in their names.
- Added Gundam SEED Battle Assault cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Inspector Gadget cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Disney´s Magical Quest 1/2 cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Disney´s Party cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Disney´s Princess cheats to the Cheatopedia.

New morning, new version of Speccy, my Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator. The new Speccy-Android 2.2.1 is now available from Google Play:

I have also been working with the crash reports accumulated over the last few months and fixed three most common remaining crash causes. See below for details.
- Added "Simulate LCD Scanlines" option, for vertical scanlines.
- Added raster effect when both vertical and horizontal scanlines enabled.
- Fixed a crash when surface gets destroyed during display update.

Taiwanese developer Rocky Hong had quite the upset last summer when he discovered that someone had ported his minimalist arcade game, Magnetized, to XBLIG and Google Play without his permission. Thankfully, the clones have been removed and now Hong has finally released his wonderfully addictive collection of physics-based challenges on iOS andAndroid.Priced at $2.99 (about Ł2), Magnetized tasks players with guiding a little cube through corridors by making magnetic spots re-calibrate the square's trajectory. Simply holding your finger down pulls the avatar towards the magnet, while releasing your finger leaves the square to continue on its current path like Sandra Bullock in Gravity. There's a loose narrative to the game - something about chasing dreams - but it's unfortunately riddled with grammatical errors as English isn't Hong's first language. It's a shame this wasn't tightened up prior to launch, but it honestly hardly matters as the core gameplay is as universal as they come.Magnetized has been free on Kongregate since April, but only now can it be played on the go. Check out the free version to see if it's your bag.

An Image of what appears to be a prototype of the Nokia Normandy has leaked onto Twitter.
The low-end smartphone is rumoured for a 2014 release and will have a tweaked version of Google’s Android operating system.
The image was tweeted by @seamissu on January 12th. The user claims the image is of an ‘engineering prototype’ of the Nokia Normandy.
The Normandy is reported to be aimed at the low-cost segment like Nokia’s Asha series, but with access to more traditional smartphone apps.
Other rumours include dual-SIM support, a single button below the screen, 5MP rear camera, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Sony has confirmed that it is considering a partnership with Microsoft in order to offer the Windows Phone operating system on its devices.
Speaking to TechRadar, the head of Sony Mobile Europe, Pierre, Perron, said that a collaboration with Microsoft was “an interesting proposition”.
"We are continuing our discussions with other partners, including Microsoft, as part of our partnership with this company on the broader Sony spectrum,” he added.
“One thing is using the [Windows Phone] platform itself, and another is: 'What can we deliver on top of it?’"
Sony had previously been rumoured to be considering a partnership in the mobile space with Microsoft in 2012. The rumours were halted by Sony Mobile CEO Kunimasa Suzuki, who said no such plans were in development. Sony’s Xperia X1 smartphone, released in 2008, ran on the Windows Mobile platform.
"We don't want to be a single OS manufacturer,” Perron explained. “I don't think it's a viable position in the long term."
"We enjoy very much a good collaboration with Google,” he added, on Sony’s current production of Android devices.
“We've been working with them for a long time and have a level of maturity with that discussion, that's good. But at the same time, Google has a relationship with direct competitors."

It looks like Codemasters is making another foray onto the roads of iOS, this time with endless free-to-play racer Drive USA. As spotted by superannuationand on the Touch Arcade forums, the game's been on the Singaporean App Store since Christmas Eve, as part of a soft-launch test.
"We can confirm that our new endless racer game for mobile platforms, Drive USA, is currently in soft launch in Singapore," a Codemasters spokesperson told Joystiq. "We will have more information on the game once there's a firm date for our global launch."
Beyond it being on iOS, Drive USA looks like unusual fare for the Grid and Dirtdeveloper. More arcade than sim, it tasks players with dodging cars, using power-ups, and making stylish drifts as they zip along a dynamically-changing road.

Game of Thrones: Ascent has been pegged for release on iOS and Android platforms, following its stint as a browser-based offering.
The standout 2013 Facebook game based on George R.R. Martin's popular works will land on both mobile platforms “in the near future,” developer Disruptor Beam's CEO Jon Radoff told Gamezebo.
Facebook players will have the option to link their accounts for cross-platform play on their respective mobile device, or just start from the beginning of the game again.
A less casual effort also based on the Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire series was recently announced by Telltale and HBO.

Sometimes, even the most massive of updates have humble beginnings. This is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a device that offered Android 4.3 Jelly Bean upon its debut. We all figured it was just a matter of time before an upgrade to 4.4 KitKat became available to users, and it appears Samsung is now ready to offer it -- albeit, on a rather small scale starting in Poland. According to SamMobile,Polish Note 3 owners (for the Snapdragon 800 quad-core version, at least) can now sideload the update through the manufacturer's Kies software. This is a pretty quiet and restrictive launch, so Samsung hasn't officially made any announcements, but we have a feeling that the company's limiting the rollout at first to ensure all of the possible bugs have been squashed prior to worldwide availability.

EU bureaucrats famously revoked their ban on ugly fruit, but they never showed such leniency to Apple. The older Mac Pro breached rules requiring extra shielding on fans and electrical ports and as a result it hasn't been seen on European store shelves since last March. Fortunately, however, the new 2013 Mac Pro passes muster, and some customers in France are seeing shipping estimates as early as mid-January -- although most folks who order their canister of computing today should expect to receive it sometime in February.

Primary by Chong Kok Seng is a puzzle game for Android.
As the captain of Starship Primary, your mission is to push back the invading alien ships by launching deadly weapons at them. You launch the weapons by marking the fuel tiles underneath them. You can mark a rectangular block of fuel tiles if the fuel tiles at the four corners of the block have the same color. The weapons at your disposal are time bombs that freeze the alien ships at their path, and missile rockets that push them back. Once pushed outside your primary perimeter, the alien ships are destroyed. The fuel tiles you mark also generate additional income. Use the income to buy more missile rockets and time bombs. If the block you mark triggers a bonus goal, your weapons get a significant power-up. As you level up, you face different alien ships, and they can counter attacks with their own weapons! For example, their shutdown rockets can make some fuel tiles unselectable! The higher the level, the deadlier their attacks become.
Changes:- fixed a rare tutorial bug.
- level 10 and above are now more challenging.

Quantum Conundrum developer Airtight Games has announced that its upcoming Ouya-exclusive "rhythm-based roguelike" Soul Fjord is coming out on 28th January.Much like Quantum Conundrum, Soul Fjord was the brainchild of studio creative director Kim Swift, best known as the lead designer of Portal. Soul Fjord will be a free-to-play affair with in-game purchases, which guarantees that half of you have already stopped reading. But hey, it stars a "funk viking" with the excellent name Magnus Jones who must save the world from Ragnarok by getting jiggy with it.A game this heavily focused on music better have a sweet soundtrack, and it more than likely will as Journey and The Banner Saga composer Austin Wintory wrote the game's tunes. In fact, Airtight just released the following dev diary focusing on its peculiar auditory blend of 70s funk and viking battle anthems. It definitely gets points for moxie.

By 2017, the same year that IDC forecasts digital PC/Mac revenues to reach $24 billion, the entire global games business could be worth more than $100 billion, according to the new Global Games Investment Review from Digi-Capital. The research firm says that mobile and online gaming is becoming such a huge force worldwide that it could grow at a compound annual growth rate of 23.6 percent, ultimately accounting for about 60 percent of software market share in 2017 while generating $60 billion of the predicted $100 billion for the overall industry.
While North America remains important, Digi-Capital expects Asia and Europe combined to represent about 80 percent of the mobile and online gaming sectors. Asia, in particular, continues to show its muscle when it comes to mobile and online gaming.
"Asia is becoming the biggest growth driver of economic value in mobile/online games, with the best games companies' revenue growth and profit margins being the envy of foreign competitors," said Tim Merel, managing director at Digi-Capital. "...9 of the top 10 games M&As of 2013 had Asian buyers, continuing the trend from 8 out of 10 in 2012. Global and pan-regional M&A deals were significant in 2013, and pan-regional relationships and profile remain critical for entrepreneurs selling via trade exits and for major corporates buying games companies. 13 out of 15 games IPOs in 2011-2013 were by Chinese, Japanese or South Korean companies, although there are also attractive IPO prospects in Western markets. Everyone is searching for the next Unicorn."
The Asian gaming boom helped drive games M&A up 29 percent from 2012 to a record $5.6 billion in 2013, excluding $2.3 billion from the management-led portion of the Activision Blizzard/Vivendi spinout. The good news for companies seeking investments is that business seems to be on the rise, as investment levels rose back to 2010 levels, up 16 percent from 2012 to $1 billion - mobile, tech and gamification dominated investments in 2013.
While much of the industry is focused on mobile and online, consoles are making a recovery from their last few sluggish years. "The 8th generation console cycle is beginning to address the decline of recent years, but questions remain about potential new installed bases, transition from the 7th generation and mobile cannibalization," Merel noted.
"Where 2013 was a year of transition, we anticipate 2014 to be a year of both growth and disruption for the games market."
For more details, you can check out the full Digi-Capital report on the firm's website.

Nope, it's not KitKat, but hey, beggars owners of older Android handsets can't be choosers. If you've been using AT&T's version of the Samsung's waterproof Galaxy S4 Active, you're in luck: Android 4.3 is starting to roll out in the form of an over-the-air update. As you're probably aware by now, the update keeps the phone in Jelly Bean territory, but brings a good deal of improvements, including OpenGL ES 3.0 support, Bluetooth Smart technology, enhanced notifications and 1080p Netflix streaming. Good luck with that 772MB download, and do let us know how it goes.

After being absent for two decades, a formerly long-running sports series is returning this spring in RBI Baseball 14. Developed by Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the MLB's in-house interactive entertainment division, the game will launch on all current and next-generation consoles in addition to smartphones and tablets.
RBI Baseball 95, a Time Warner Interactive-developed game for the Sega 32X, was the last entry in the series, which began on the NES/Famicom. The timing of the announcement is appropriate, given that 2K Sports officially canceled its own baseball series just one week ago, putting an end to its exclusive third-party licensing agreement. The MLB currently has a landing page with a spiffy logo set up for the game, though no other details are available at the moment.

The Apple iWatch and iPhone 6 will be released in 2014 with both showing brand new display technology, an analyst has predicted.
DisplaySearch made the suggestions as part of its projections for new display sizes and formats in 2014.
Apple’s iWatch was the only new wearable device listed, with the prediction that the smartwatch will use a 1.3 or 1.6-inch flexible AMOLED display with a resolution of 320x320.
The firm also forecast that the next iPhone launch may follow the dual-approach of the iPhone 5S and 5C, with two differently-sized models. The smaller, 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would use a 1600x900 resolution – greater than the four-inch 1136x640 display currently seen in the iPhone 5S, 5C and 5.
The larger, 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would boast a Full HD resolution of 1920x1080.
The firm added that both new iPhone 6 models would have their displays made using low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPC), which is rumoured to currently be used for iPhone 5S displays.
DisplaySearch also predicted a larger iPad model with a 12.6-inch screen, almost three inches bigger than the current 9.7-inch display used in the iPad Air.

January 15th, 2014, 22:35 Posted By: wraggster
In 2008, Nintendo released the highly successful Wii Fit – a fitness title that went on to sell 23m units and started a series that has sold over 44m copies to date. Suddenly an influx of competitive products emerged from the biggest names in gaming such as EA and Ubisoft.
Since then, the number of console fitness titles has declined, as have their sales. Yet, the market for these titles still exists, just on different platforms. And in fact fitness games on smartphones and tablets are pushing forward the genre into new and exciting areas.
One the most successful of these new mobile titles is the 7 Minute Fitness Workout Challenge. Released in August, it has been near the top of App Store charts around the globe since. The app is based on the 7 Minute Workout, a high intensity training routine popularised by the New York Times in spring of 2013. Clinically proven to work, Canadian fitness app company Health Xperts decided to bring it to mobile.
“Our team was already popular in the fitness app field with our app Full Fitness, but we saw a real opportunity with the 7 Minute Workout Challenge,” says Russell Zohoor, who was part of the small team of developers at Health Xperts.
“While our other app was more for expert fitness enthusiasts, this workout was something that the average person could do to just become healthy and stay fit within their busy life schedules.”
“By introducing a game component, it becomes
competitive. During that initial stage when
health changes are not yet visible, the game
component keeps you plugged in.” Russell Zohoor, Health Xperts
A number of developers began making guidelines on how to best do the routine, but Health Xperts had a different idea: “We saw an opportunity to make it even easier by ‘gamifying’ the experience and began developing it,” explains Russell.
The app guides fitness fans through the routine with timings. But the game component is an important aspect of the app, such as achievements, which are constantly being updated. By fulfilling achievements, new workouts are unlocked, adding an incentive to keep on playing.
“By introducing a game component, it becomes competitive. During that initial stage when health changes are not yet visible, the game component keeps you plugged in,” explains Russell.
Of course, the mobile aspect of the app allows the game to be played nearly everywhere. “No matter where you are, chances are you have your mobile device on you and can fit in a quick workout.“
But developers aren’t just making mobile titles that just use the device itself. San Francisco-based developer Blue Goji – founded by the minds behind the Guitar Hero series, Kai and Charles Huang – is trying to make fitness fun with the help of peripherals.

The developer’s first title, Goji Play, makes use of a pair of wireless controllers that attach to most fitness equipment, and an activity sensor that tracks the user’s movement in order to entertain people while they are working out.
Rather than being just a standalone game itself, Goji Play offers an entire library of activities which vary from titles that distract the user to make the time go by, such as a boxing game that uses the controller, while there is a bike game that relates to the real life cycling the user is doing.
“When we were creating Guitar Hero, we saw how games were not only fun but could get people up and more active,” says Blue Goji CEO and co-founder, Kai Huang.
“A few years ago we came up with the idea to apply this experience to cardio exercise; an activity that myself and everyone I knew hated because it was agonising.“
But Goji Play isn’t trying to do the same thing as Health Xpert’s title. Where 7 Minute Workout Challenge is a guide on how to do an exercise routine with game elements included, Goji Play aims to make working out fun – as the title’s tagline says – so half an hour of exercise feels like five minutes.
“Goji Play isn’t just a fitness game, but a way to enhance cardio workouts by about adding a fun factor to cardio machines including bikes or treadmills,” says Kai.

iPad maker questions regulator's involvement, but will pay $32.5 million to avoid legal battle
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
apple.com
Apple has agreed to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission in a dispute over unauthorized in-app purchases. The FTC announced the settlement today, saying Apple has agreed to refund customers at least $32.5 million spent on in-app purchases by children without their parents' consent.
"This settlement is a victory for consumers harmed by Apple's unfair billing, and a signal to the business community: whether you're doing business in the mobile arena or the mall down the street, fundamental consumer protections apply," said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. "You cannot charge consumers for purchases they did not authorize."
The FTC said that the number of Apple customers who complained of unauthorized charges numbers in the tens of thousands, with some children racking up thousands of dollars in charges for apps like Tap Pet Hotel, Dragon Story, and Tiny Zoo Friends. The FTC said that Apple did not tell users that entering their password would create a 15-minute window during which their account could be charged for anything without further consent or prompts. Additionally, in the password entry screen that would authorize an in-app purchase, FTC said Apple gave no mention that users were entering the password in order to purchase anything.
As for Apple's position, 9to5 Mac is reporting on the contents of a company-wide email Apple CEO Tim Cook sent out this morning. In the note, Cook pointed out that Apple had already made changes to the 15-minute window policy and promised to pay out refunds to customers as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement last year.
"It doesn't feel right for the FTC to sue over a case that had already been settled," Cook said. "To us, it smacked of double jeopardy. However, the consent decree the FTC proposed does not require us to do anything we weren't already going to do, so we decided to accept it rather than take on a long and distracting legal fight."

Samsung has just verified that another Galaxy Tab is imminent after it published the user manual for a new Android tablet on its own site. The company's Polish support page reveals documentation for the SM-T110, which is rumored to be a Wi-Fi variant of Samsung's low-cost Galaxy Tab 3 Lite. According to a local stockist, the Jelly Bean tablet will feature a 7-inch 1024 x 600 display, dual-core 1.2GHz Marvell processor, 1GB of RAM, 2-megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage (including microSD support) and a 3,600 mAh battery. The same retailer has opened pre-orders for both the Wi-Fi and 3G variants, pricing them at $165 and $263 respectively, all but confirming their place near the bottom of Samsung's tablet pecking order. Expect the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite to make its official debut in the coming weeks, before Samsung heads to Mobile World Congress late next month.

With Surgeon Simulator 2013, Bossa Studios managed to make horrific medical malpractice entertaining. If a newly-released teaser is any indication, the developer now hopes to do the same for ill-advised dental surgery.
Though actual gameplay footage is scant, the above clip clearly shows a sedated patient being repeatedly bludgeoned by what appears to be a heart rate monitor. The developer pictured in the video then shoos the camera away, sparing viewers from what's almost certainly an even more horrific fate for our poor patient.
It's unknown what exactly this video is teasing, though the final moments of the clip feature the Surgeon Simulator logo, then claim that whatever we're watching will be "coming soon to an iPad near you." This suggests the above periodontal nightmare is coming to the iOS incarnation of Surgeon Simulator 2013, though when and in what capacity remains to be seen.

In addition to remastered artwork, gameplay tweaks, and more accessible multiplayer, BG2:EE features the Throne of Bhaal expansion, four new party members, and another venture into the Black Pits for some arena-based combat.

Ouya co-founder Muffi Ghadiali left his position as VP of Product Development, with his departure noted in a company statement as one of a number of "recent changes." Ouya informed TechCrunch that Ghadiali is no longer employed at the company, while a "well-placed source" told the site the decision to leave was his, and not Ouya's. Ghadiali left Amazon for Ouya in 2012, having been part of the Kindle development team.
"Ouya is focusing more on the next phase of the business and product development," reads an Ouya statement provided to TechCrunch. "We've made some recent changes including the departure of Muffi Ghadiali who was invaluable during the launch of OUYA. As is to be expected, OUYA is an ever-changing business, and as we continue to grow our needs shift accordingly."
After amassing $8.6 million via Kickstarter, Ouya brought its $99 Android microconsole to retail in June 2013. It accumulated first week sales that were"relatively light for a new console" according to the NPD Group, although Ouya CEO Julie Urhman dismissed that data, saying the company sold "every unit available." Meanwhile, game sales or the lack thereof have been a bone of contention for some developers.
Nonetheless, Ouya attracted more than 500 games to its marketplace last year, and the company is looking forward to a busy 2014 in turn. Development is set to begin on the Ouya 2, with plans to release the improved microconsole later this year, while a controller redesign is also in the works.

Final Fantasy 6 is now available on Android. The mobile port was originally announced in October by Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita, who expected the game to arrive on both Android and iOS by the end of 2013. While it just missed the mark on its Android release, the game has not yet appeared on iOS.
Final Fantasy 6 has been all over the place, as it first launched in 1994 on SNES, was later ported to PlayStation in 1999, Game Boy Advance in 2006 and hit PSN in 2011. The Android version of the game features recreated graphics and shares the "new magicites and events" that were brought forth on GBA. The classic RPG costs $15.99 on the Google Play store.

You can watch but not buy or rent from your iPhone or iPad.
The Google Play Movies and TV app has be launched on the Apple App Store, becoming a direct competitor to iTunes on its own turf, reports Tech Crunch.
With the new app, you can watch all your Google Play content on an iPhone or iPad, but you will not be able buy or rent anything, as stated in the iOS SDK rules – and rules are rules.
Remember the whole HMV app debacle?
The move means that Google now has an advantage over Apple, as you can watch its content across Android and iOS devices – a similar strategy to Kindle’s app, which was launched on all the major platforms.
The only let down of Google Play Movies and TV is that is has considerably less content. Plus it lacks the deals that iTunes offers.
Nonetheless, it is a good platform and it is certainly good to see some slightly newer platforms standing up to the big iTunes bully even if it remains the best for user experience, content, and deals on its own platform.

Horace Dediu writes at Aymco that in 2013 there were 18.8 times more Windows PCs sold than Macs, a reduction in the Windows advantage from about 19.8x in 2012. But the bigger story is how Apple's mobile platform including iOS devices has nearly reached the sales volume of Windows. In 2013 there were only 1.18 more Windows PCs than Apple devices sold. Odds are that in 2014 Apple and Windows will be at parity. Dediu says that the Windows advantage itself came from the way computing was purchased in the period of its ascent in the 1980s and 1990s 'when computing platform decisions were made first by companies then by developers and later by individuals who took their cues from what standards were already established. As these decisions created network effects, the cycle repeated and the majority platform strengthened.' There was concentration in decision making in the 80s so a platform could win by convincing 500 individuals who had the authority (as CIOs) to impose through fiat a standard on the centers of gravity of purchasing power. Today, with mobile products there are billions of decision makers. and the decision making process for buying computers, which began with large companies IT departments making decisions with multi-year horizons, has changed to billions of individuals making decisions with no horizons. Companies have become the laggards and individuals the early adopters of technology. 'Ultimately, it was the removal of the intermediary between buyer and beneficiary which dissolved Microsoft's power over the purchase decision,' concludes Dediu. 'The computer has become personal not just in the sense of how it's used but in the sense of how it's owned.' Finally, all the above is almost moot, given the rise of Android, something that is beating both Cupertino and Redmond alike."

It's a fantasy come true: After admiring him from afar for so long, you're now moving in with your dreamy boss from work. Will this be the beginning of a budding romance, or is it the start of a workplace disaster? It's up to you to keep your professional life on track while spending quality time with your pretty anime boyfriend in Our Two Bedroom Story, a rare English-localized entry in the otome (female audience-targeted) romance simulation genre released today for iOS and Android devices.
"As the player is thrown into her secret, new life with her boss," the game's description reads, "she can experience the excitement of seeing a side of her guy that she never sees at work." Our prediction: He refuses to do the dishes and his room smells like a fart circus. It's up to you, then, to shape him into the boyfriend you want him to be while not getting fired from your day job. That would be awkward.
Our Two Bedroom Story's prologue chapter is free to download, but to continue your romantic conquest, you'll need to purchase one of two story paths, priced at $3.99 each. The game's epilogues cost an extra $1.99.

Furthering its efforts to embrace the ubiquity of iOS devices, Sony has ported a handful of minigames found in Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time from their original home on the PlayStation 3 and Vita handheld to iOS.
Dubbed "Bentley's Hackpack," the free mobile release features three minigames. "Spark Runner" sees players maneuvering a spark through an electronics-themed course, "Alter Ego" is a side-scrolling shooter set inside increasingly complex mazes and "System Cracker" asks players to blow up virtual enemies from the comfort of a small tank. Those who have played Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time will recall each of these diversions as short minigames, though a later standalone release on both PS3 and Vita offered more fleshed-out versions of the trio.
As Game Informer notes, the debut of Bentley's Hackpack continues a trend of Sony issuing short, tie-in games on iOS. In November, the publisher released a match-three puzzle game linked to PlayStation 4 launch title Knack.

Renren Games launched a quirky, licensed free-to-play basketball game on iOSthis week called NBA Rush. The game is an endless runner in the same vein asTemple Run in which players dodge obstacles with one of 90 real-life NBA players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Blake Griffin, jamming their way through pesky aliens.
The brightly-colored game includes a number of power-ups like "space jump," and each athlete has a special ability that can be "tagged in" while one dribbles endlessly, dunking all over the UFO-riding creatures from other planets. If there's anything Space Jam has taught us, it's that aliens and basketball don't mix.

Smaller tablets expected to dominate the future market.
Sales of tablets in the UK is projected to fall from 17 million in 2013, to 14 million this year, according to CCS Insight.
This comes just after we saw a huge rise in sales ranging from the top-end premium models such as they iPad, to the budget devices such as the Tesco Hudl.
Over 43 per cent of the UK’s population now owns a tablet, up from just six per cent two years ago. This number is expected to double by 2017.
The coming two years however will see the market slow down, as people take a breather from consuming the newest gadgets so quickly. It will pick up again in 2016 - contrary to Strategy Analytics' 2012 prediction that tablet sales would pass 780 million in 2016 worldwide - and CCS Insight reckon sales will hit 20 million in the UK by 2017.
Marina Koytcheva, director of forecasting at CCS Insight, said: “It’s only natural that we will now see a cooling off in tablet sales for the next couple of years. The next big wave of growth will come in two years when consumers who bought their first tablets in 2012 and 2013 start replacing them.”
Smaller tablets are expected to dominate the market even more so than they are doing now. 2012 was a bad year for the little tablets, as they only accounted for 34 per cent. This rose to 63 per cent in 20113 and is looking to grow even further in the future.

I thought those veteran gamers amongst you might like this one. Quake III Arena by legendary developer id Software isn't available on the App Store, but there is a way that you can get it to work on your iPad all the same. You can also get Open Arena and Quake III Shareware to work on Apple's tablet. The process is reasonably straightforward for anyone who wants to give it a ago, and Grab It Magazine has provided a step-by step guide, with pictures and necessary links, to help the interested through it.

Sick of your new phone already? Verizon would like a word with you. Over the weekend, the company made some changes to its Edge upgrade program, drastically reducing the amount of time customers need to wait before pursuing an upgrade. The plan originally allowed trade-ins for devices that were half paid off and about six months old; now the waiting period has been reduced to a mere 30 days. Verizon told CNET the tweak was technically a promotion, but it's not actually much of a deal. Although the wait-time has been reduced by a factor of six, the amount due hasn't changed a penny: users seeking a new device still need to pony up at least 50 percent of the phone's value, even if they've only been using it for a few weeks. While it's always good to have options, maybe it's a better idea to sort out your buyer's remorse during your carrier's return window.

We've yet to hear more details about the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2's launch this quarter, but a recent FCC filing at least reveals that it might head to Verizon. According to the documents, a particular variant that goes by model number SM-P905V supports Big Red's LTE (4 and 13) bands. Since the 2014 refresh of the 10.1 Note Pro has also passed through the agency with Verizon LTE, the carrier might offer both sizes when the tablets hit the market. Based on the info we got from the gigantic tablet's CES debut, it'll have a WiFi version for those who have no need for mobile internet. Folks set on buying one with long-term evolution speeds, however, may want to cross their fingers for the behemoth to hit their preferred carriers.

Sure, 64-bit support is all the rage nowadays in the mobile space, what with Apple setting off a trend with the introduction of the iPhone 5s. Now, according to Intel's CEO, tablets running Google's operating system are next and will soon be available with 64-bit compatibility. During an earnings call yesterday, Intel chief Brian Krzanich said that Android tablets using the company's new Atom-basedBay Trail processor are set to hit the market as early as this spring, bringing alonga technology which so far has been limited to Windows 8.1 devices. It's also worth noting that while 64-bit slates may be arriving soon, the number of Android applications optimized to take advantage of the feature will be very low at first. Still, chances are developers will quickly take care of this as more and more 64-bit-ready phones and tablets start to become available.

If you purchased Square Enix's revamped Android port of the classic Super NES RPG Final Fantasy 6 after it hit Google Play last week, you may want to put your playthrough on hold while its developers sort out a major bug affecting player progress. Currently, the game crashes at a critical point, making the latter half of its storyline inaccessible.
Players report that the glitch occurs during a climactic battle between Kefka and General Leo in Thamasa at the game's halfway point. A crash during a cutscene renders the game unbeatable, as story progress is stalled until required events unfold in Thamasa.
Publisher Square Enix acknowledges the bug in the game's Google Play description, and promises that an upcoming fix will soon allow players to travel to the Floating Continent and beyond. A release date for the patch has not been announced.

AT&T is looking to make its Next smartphone payment plan a little more prominent. You'll be eligible to hop on-board the Next bandwagon in a mere six months and start swapping handsets sooner right now if you were under a two-year service agreement before January 18th. If you walked out of an AT&T store this morning with the carrier's typical contract, well, you're stuck with your handset for the next 20 months. We imagine that somewhere, surrounded by magenta,John Legere is smiling.

Sprint was the first out of the gate to announce LG G Flex pricing and availabilityfor the US, but AT&T isn't too far behind. The network just made it be known thatthe curved smartphone will be available for pre-order online and at retail stores starting January 24th. We haven't been given specifics on when the device will get shipped out to early adopters, nor do we have a date on when it'll be stocked on shelves for everyone else -- but we do know, however, that it'll be all yours for $300 with a two-year contract. If you'd rather get it on a Next plan, you can do so by paying $27 per month (on an 18-month plan) or $35 per month (on a 12-month plan). We're still awaiting word on when T-Mobile's option will come out, but we'd guess that we'll be hearing pretty soon.

VLC for iOS just got a much-needed coat of fresh paint. The media player's version 2.2 update has introduced an iOS 7-native interface with its own set of multi-touch playback gestures: you can tap with two fingers to pause a video, and swipes control the brightness, playback position and volume. This is more than just a skin-deep upgrade, though. VLC is now more cloud-savvy with support for Dropbox streaming, HTTP Live Streaming and downloads from Google Drive. The new app handles both lock screen privacy and TV show organization more elegantly than its predecessor, and it plays clips encoded in the more advancedHEVC (H.265) and VP9 formats. All told, there are plenty of reasons for video lovers to swing by the App Store for the upgrade.

As Samsung's Galaxy S5 gets ready to launch, the rumor alert scale has already hit "yellow." The latest from @evleaks shows a possible TouchWiz home screen that would be a sharp U-turn from the current one, if real. It displays information and notifications like Google Now in a tiled format ŕ la Microsoft's Modern/Metro UI -- not unlike the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2's Magazine UX. Naturally, there's no info about how the software would gather up such data, but in any event, the screenshot above could easily be a Samsung test or a fake -- we'll find out in a few short months.

100 million more than the estimated 20 million in 2013.
The phablet market is expected to become a growth area for established smartphone vendors, allowing them to create flagship models targeted at tech-savvy markets.
Sales are expected to surpass 120 million by 120 million, rising significantly form the estimated 20 million in 2013, according to Juniper Research.
The OS market for phablets will most likely be dominated by Android andWindows, as both ecosystems are expected to find success in or have already succeeded in developing regions, and cover a wider price spectrum.
However if rumours surrounding Apple’s entrance into the phablet race are true, it could change these predictions dramatically.
The devices will find that some of the most receptive markets will be in East Asian territories such as South Korea – amongst gamers who desire a larger surface to play on, and China where content streamers desire higher quality screens.

34 per cent keep their phones for nostalgic reasons like looking at old text messages.
Brits are hoarding an estimated 124.8 million unused mobile phones worth around Ł10.73 billion, finds SellMyMobile.com.
The average British phone user has two idle phones lying around their home, and nearly 32 per cent have three or more.
With the average device sporting an Ł86 price tag, some of us could be starving our wallets of Ł172. Imagine how many iPhone cases that could buy.
In most cases this could be down to pure laziness, however 34 per cent have admitted to being a little nostalgic when it comes down to letting our old phones go.
They say they enjoy sifting through old text messages, reminiscing on the good old times at least once a year – 15 per cent admit to doing this more than every six months…
Men have proved to be more clingy as 13 per cent have said that they store their phones in a box, or cupboard – probably in the ‘man draw,’ you never know when you might need it after all – compared to just seven per cent of women.
Keir McConomy, founder of SellMyPhone.com, said: “The Mobile Mountain study really highlights how many Brits are still unaware of the money they can make by trading in their old mobile phone.
“It’s surprising that one in five admitted to being too lazy to recycle or sell their old phone – through recycling sites the process couldn’t be easier.”

Increasingly, all indies can do is release the best mobile game they can and hope for the best.
Monday’s Big Indie Pitch event in London felt like a microcosm of the mobile games market right now. It was chaotic, overcrowded and hosted over 50 indies, all of whom lined up to present their game to judges in the hope of winning that most rare of prizes, greater visibility. Only a few would succeed, with the majority destined to be left undiscovered and uncompensated.Among some derivative fare there were several intriguing and well-executed ideas. Schrodinger’s Cat was turned into a caped superhero for a puzzle platformer, and an adventure game described by its creator as a “mildly xenophobic space satire” raised a smile. Some former Ubisoft developers pitched Sleep Attack, a tower defence game with a neat twist and a cute art style. Tap Happy Sabotage, a party game riff on Snap played with several friends on the same iPad, also caught the eye. But taken as a snapshot of the creativity on show in the mobile games market, it wasn’t fantastically inspiring.Maybe those devs complaining about discoverability in the market are the same people flooding app stores with low quality games, hoping one will somehow catch on. And for those not relying on hope and luck alone, there are plenty of companies offering indies a way of getting greater traction in these marketplaces, selling their games across networks or monetising them by stitching ads into their output.Speaking to developers and service providers at the event, there seemed to be a fundamental tension between those interested in art of making games and the science of making money from them. There’s a reason we’ve yet to see too many critically-acclaimed free-to-play games, Plants Vs Zombies 2 being one of those rare specimens. Though it is the prevailing model right now, the mechanics of free-to-play simply don’t lend themselves to fluid and satisfying play and cannot be effectively supported by a small indie alone.

A US judge has just awarded Apple two summary pre-trial judgments, significantly reducing Samsung's chances of prevailing in the second patent clash between the two tech giants. Judge Lucy Koh invalidated a Samsung multimedia-synchronization patent and determined that the Korean company breached an Apple autocorrect IP -- meaning Koh thought the infringement was so clear that there was no need for a jury to see it. As Foss Patents pointed out, Google could also be unhappy about the autocorrect decision, since it may affect the entire Android ecosystem. With each party bringing five claims to trial, Samsung's chances have effectively dropped by 20 percent since it only has four of its own claims left and Apple has already prevailed on one. That could also impact Samsung's leverage in upcoming negotiations between the company's CEOs, since it hasn't won a single non-FRAND (standards essential) patent dispute through any of the two proceedings. If those discussions don't pan out, then the Apple v. Samsung, part deux trial will begin March 31, 2014.

If you like to text friends and family overseas, you know that it can be expensive -- US carriers frequently charge either per text or for blocks of messages that aren't always enough. Pricing won't be a problem if you sign up for Verizon's new World Messaging Unlimited plan, though. As the name implies, the $5 add-on lets you send as many messages as you like to most countries. It also drops the per-minute voice rates to a penny when calling Canada or Mexico, and 5 cents for the rest of the Americas. Verizon describes the unlimited plan as a promotional offer; while there isn't a clear expiry date, we'd suggest acting quickly if you want to chat with the rest of the planet.

Nearly one week after its launch on iOS, NBA Rush has been downloaded over one million times. This is according to a tweet from Other Ocean developer Frank Cifaldi. While the game's developer is listed as Renren Games on iTunes, Other Ocean handled its creation.
NBA Rush is an endless runner game with action similar Temple Run (but with basketballs). Players control one of 90 real-life NBA players, each armed with individual abilities and power-ups, guiding them through obstacles and slam-dunking over aliens. The wacky, licensed arcade-style game is free to play.

Like a zombie slowly shuffling toward tasty, tasty brains, the release date forYaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has limped from March 4, 2014 to March 18. For those who can't wait to witness zombie murder at the hands of a ninja cyborg, however, Team Ninja and Dark Horse Comics have released the first of a three-part comic series that provides insight into the world and story of the upcoming game.
Written by Tim Seeley (Army of Darkness vs. Hack/Slash) and Josh Emmons (Ex Sanguine), the debut issue has main character Yaiba explaining how his sword came to be known as "Heartless." Just a wild guess here, but we're going to wager it has something to do with it being used to kill a lot of people. Maybe we're wrong, though! You can find out by downloading the first issue for free from the Dark Horse digital store or via the iOS or Android apps. The comic will also be available in physical format when the game releases.

Fancy feeding your music production hobby with a slate rather than a collection of pricey gadgets? If so, Korg has added to its iPad-based offerings with the Gadget app. The software for Apple tablets bakes in 15 different sythesizers and drum machines (called Gadgets) that can be combined any way you'd like to construct those beats. Ranging from the Kiev digital synth to the Chicago tube bass machine, the app's instrument arsenal (which can be previewed here) covers quite the sonic spectrum with drum and synth sounds a plenty. Keeping the orientation vertical, the UI is divided into two sections that allow for dual control at all times. This is aimed at making both track and instrument adjustments quick and easy. If you're concerned about your lack of musical skill, there's a scale function helps you avoid hitting a wrong note whilst getting your feet wet.
Already splurged for the latest iPad? Korg says you'll be able to run more than 20 of the instruments at the same time, thanks to its beefed up chipset. Once those audio files have been tinkered with enough, options for sharing to Facebook, SoundCloud and Twitter or beaming them to Dropbox for safe keeping are all built in. There's also access to GadgetCloud for showing off projects with fellow users of the software -- complete with its own ranking system. The app is a bitpricey at $38.99, but if you commit before February 23rd, you can snag a $10 discount at that second source link below.

Maybe you've heard the rumor: Apple's considering larger screens for its next iPhones. Because, yeah, the mobile market's been trending that direction for a while now, so it'd make sense. That doesn't mean it's necessarily true, but with theWall Street Journal weighing in on it today, the notion is gaining a bit more credibility. This is all, of course, attributed to "people familiar with the situation" that peg Apple's next two phones as having target screen sizes larger than 4.5-inches and 5-inches, respectively. What makes this rumor even juicier is the possibility that Apple might abandon the polycarbonate casing of the iPhone 5c in favor of the tried-and-true metallic approach of its latest generation.
All of this could change, however, as the alleged strategy is still being bandied about internally at Apple, with only the smaller-sized iPhone model being considered for mass production. That means your dreams of a phablet-y iPhone will have to remain just that for now. September is still far, far away and we won't know for sure what Cupertino's cooking up until then. But you can bet there'll be more rumors, more leaks and more fakes from the internet's iFandom to keep us all guessing as to Apple's next (relatively) giant leap.

We've seen plenty of leaked information about the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a purported entry-level version of Samsung's popular handset. But while the South Korean giant has yet to make the device official, that hasn't stopped the company from talking about it. Earlier today, Android Central reported it had received confirmation from Samsung that the Note 3 Neo wouldn't be coming to the United Kingdom. Furthermore, a Samsung representative has now told Engadget the unannounced smartphone won't be released in the US either, telling us it's only expected to arrive in "select countries/regions" and that each will announce their availability in due time.
As a refresher, the Galaxy Note 3 Neo is said to feature a 5.55-inch, 720p screen alongside 2GB of RAM, a 3,100mAh battery and an all-new Exynos hexa-core chip. Now we just have to wait for Samsung to formally launch the thing -- and fret not if you're in the US or UK, as we're sure there will be retailers on the internet willing to take your money in exchange for this Note 3 variant.

Namco Bandai has resurrected its 1995 Super Famicom RPG Tales of Phantasiaas a free-to-play IOS app supported by in-game microtransactions.
The iOS version of Tales of Phantasia retains the classic JRPG's storyline and unique side-scrolling battle system, but ramps up its difficulty to encourage players to purchase optional status boosts and items that revive characters after death. Touch Arcade reports that the game's microtransaction system requires a constant online connection.
Tales of Phantasia has seen numerous ports over the last two decades, including enhanced remakes for the PSOne and PSP. The majority of these ports were exclusive to Japan, however. Previously, the only existing English-language version of Tales of Phantasia was a Game Boy Advance port published by Nintendo in North America in 2006.
Phantasia is the first of several Tales of... series games debuting stateside in 2014. Tales of Symphonia Chronicles will launch in February, followed by the release of Tales of Xillia 2 later this year. The latest series entry, Tales of Zestiria, was recently announced for the PlayStation 3 in Japan.

One Man Left Studios, formed in 2009, will make its first foray into Android development next month with the launch of Tilt to Live 2. The sequel to the original indie darling will be available on Google Play come February 24.
Tilt to Live 2, an action game where players must tilt their device in order to dodge a relentless series of encroaching evil dots, is already available on iOS for $2.99. The sequel includes a new scoring system based around tricks and two different modes of play: Classic mode and Code Red. Unfortunately, the latter doesn't involve delicious, tooth-rotting soda, but you can easily make your own if you're thirsty.

30 years ago today, Apple debuted the Macintosh. Here are some reviews of the early Mac models, including theMacintosh ('will be compared to other machines not only in terms of its features but also in the light of the lavish claims and promises made by Apple co-founder Steven Jobs'), the Mac SE ('contains some radical changes, including room for a second internal drive and even a fan'), the Mac IIx ('a chorus of yawns'), and the Mac Portable ('you may develop a bad case of the wannas for this lovable [16-lb.] luggable'). Plus insights on the Macintosh II's prospects from Bill Gates: 'If you look at a product like Mac Word III on that full-page display, it's pretty awesome. ... But the corporate buyer is never going to be a strong point for Apple.'"iFixit got their hands on a Mac 128K and did a teardown, evaluating the old hardware for repairability. What will the Mac look like in another 30 years?

A team of researchers at Virginia Tech University have developed a battery with energy density an order of magnitude higher than lithium-ion batteries, while being almost endlessly rechargeable and biodegradable as well – because it's made of sugar. The battery is an enzymatic biofuel fuel cell – a type of fuel cell that uses a catalyst to strip molecules from molecules of a fuel material. Instead of using platinum or nickel for catalysts, however, biofuel cells use the catalysts made from enzymes similar to those used to break down and digest food in the body. Sugar is a good fuel material because it is energy dense, easy to obtain and transport, and so simple to biodegrade that almost anything biological can eat it. Sugar-based fuel cells aren't new, but existing designs use only a small number of enzymes that don't oxidize the sugar completely, meaning the resulting battery can hold only small amounts of energy that it releases slowly. A new design that uses 13 enzymes that can circulate freely to get better access to sugar molecules, however, is able to store energy at a density of 596 amp-hours per kilogram – an order of magnitude higher than lithium-ion batteries, according to Y.H. Percival Zhang, who studies biological systems engineering at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. "Sugar is a perfect energy storage compound in nature," Zhang said in a statement announcing publication in Nature Communications of his paper describing the battery. "So it's only logical that we try to harness this natural power in an environmentally friendly way to produce a battery.""

Samsung had a rough day yesterday. Its earnings report indicated the company experienced the first posted drop in profit in two years (a mere $7.8 billion, compared to $8.27 billion in the same quarter last year), thanks to a strong Korean won, a special one-off bonus payment to employees and heavy holiday marketing costs. Given its increased year-over-year profits and sales this may not seem so bad, but there is a growing concern that the company has a difficult year ahead, especially for smartphone sales.
The company expects slowing sales in the first quarter of 2014 for its smartphones and tablets, thanks to "seasonality." This means fewer people are buying mobile devices -- as a new Galaxy flagship approaches, many people put off their phone purchase until it comes out. But the company also indicated that the mobile battlefield is only going to get fiercer over the next year, as developed markets are reaching saturation. Now, the war is shifting to developing markets where more people are becoming smartphone and tablet owners for the first time.

Apple isn't colluding with the NSA to hand over user data and CEO Tim Cookwants you to know that. In fact, Cook feels so strongly about this issue of security that he's gone on record saying the government would need "to cart [Apple's employees] out in a box" to get access to its servers. That choice soundbite comes from a sitdown interview, airing tonight on ABC, during which Cook elaborates on what he sees as public misperception stemming from the recent NSA scandal. To counter that, Cook said he's been "pushing very, very hard" for more transparency into Apple's internal practices, a move he hopes would help to set the record straight with the general public.
Cook is also expected to touch upon other topics outside of the NSA breach, like the company's heavily-anticipated plunge into wearables, and the measures Apple takes to maintain secrecy surrounding its product roadmap. You can watch the teaser clip from the full interview with Cook just after break.

"Year-on-year decline." Those are words that no company looks forward to publishing in its earnings reports, but unfortunately we've seen them printed more often than not on Nokia's quarterly statements. Though there have been a few ups and downs, struggling profits and sales have been a general concern for a long time, and unfortunately this quarter's earnings report did little to soothe our worries; Nokia sold 600,000 fewer Lumias than the previous quarter. Now that Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division is nearly complete, much of our focus has turned to how the merger will affect the Lumia lineup of Windows Phones. An even bigger mystery at the moment, however, is what Microsoft will choose to do with the rest of Nokia's phones -- namely, the Mobile Phone division, which consists of the company's basic featurephones and the Asha lineup of advanced featurephones, none of which run Windows Phone.
Just after Microsoft announced its intent to acquire the phone maker, Nokia insisted that the division wasn't going anywhere; it has "substantial global reach ... and a strong customer base," but in emerging markets like India and China, it faces intense competition from fully functional smartphone platforms for a similar cost. Even worse, as we learned in yesterday's report, sales from this division were flat -- and as the competition gets heavier, it's going to get worse, not better. Is it worth it for Microsoft to try saving a lineup of handsets that don't feature Windows Phone OS? Or does it make more sense to push lower-end Lumia devices to cater to the next billion smartphone users?

Casual games publisher King has taken a game offline after facing accusations of hypocrisy and cloning.
During the latter-half of January, King became a spectacle of public relations problems after its lawyers obtained a trademark for the word Candy across North America and Europe, before challenging a separate trademark application filed by the developers of The Banner Saga.
As Apple and Google began to delete games with the word "candy" from its app stores, King insisted it was also forced to challenge The Banner Saga trademark due to its use of the word "saga".
The Banner Saga, a Viking-themed tactical role-playing video game, is apparently an infringement on King's Candy Crush Saga, a match-three puzzle game which emulates the rules of games such as Bejeweled (2001), Zoo Keeper (2003) and Tetris Attack (1996).
In the wake of the controversial trademark protection policies, the indie developer Matthew Cox claimed that King had deliberately copied his game Scamperghost after he turned down a deal to license the game to King.
Cox's claims, which King denies, were supplemented with a screenshot comparison of both titles.

New leaked NSA documents shed a new light on the agency's assault on the data controls of smartphone apps. Using app data permissions as a jumping off point, the documents show agency staffers building huge quantities of data, including 'intercepting Google Maps queries made on smartphones, and using them to collect large volumes of location information.' One slide lists capabilities for 'hot mic' recording, high precision geotracking, and file retrieval which would reach any content stored locally on the phone, including text messages, emails and calendar entries. As the slide notes in a parenthetical aside, 'if it's on the phone, we can get it.'"

85 per cent of devices sold in the last three months in Britain were smartphones.
Android proved to be Europe’s favourite operating system by the end of 2013 where is claimed 68.6 per cent of the market share, reports Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Apple came in a distant second with 18.5 per cent, and Windows Phone’s year-on-year growth continued, however its European market has stuck pretty much static at 10.3 per cent for the past three months.
Samsung’s European share slipped 2.2 per cent to 40.3 per cent, and it ended its year in China with a flat 23.7 per cent.
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “it is no surprise that everyone is concentrating on high growth in China, but currently local brands are proving clear winners. In December, Xiaomi overtook both Apple and Samsung to become the top selling smartphone in China.”
Britain’s smartphone market continued to thrive, with penetration standing at 69 per cent, and 85 per cent of all devices sold in the last three months being a smartphone.
Japan proved to be big Apple fans, where it took 68.7 per cent of smartphone sales, with success being driven by its deal with the Japan based carrier NTT DoCoMo.
Apple’s share on the carrier hit 58.1 per cent in Q4 of 2013 compared to 91.7 per cent on Softbank, and 63.7 per cent on AU KDDI.
Sunnebo continued: “Apple has lost share in most countries compared with this time last year, but importantly it has held strong shares in key markets including 43.9 per cent in USA, 29.9 per cent in Great Britain and 19 per cent in China.”
The over all smartphone market grew by 44 per cent last year with around a quarter of a billion devices begin shipped in Q3 alone.

Apple's earnings are in, and as expected the company got a nice boost in sales over the holidays. We're talking 51 million iPhones sold -- an all-time quarterly record -- up from 47.8 million during the same quarter last year. It's unclear just how the iPhone sales break down between the iPhone 5c and 5s models, as Apple didn't offer those numbers. iPad sales reached a record quarterly high as well, at 26 million up from 22.9 million during the same year-ago quarter. Profit, meanwhile, comes in at $13.1 billion, showing no change year-over-year.
Mac sales are also up; with a jump to 4.8 million from 4.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Also record-setting was Cupertino's reported quarterly revenue of $57.6 billion. Apple's board of directors has also announced that shareholders will receive a $3.05 cash dividend per share early next month.
If Apple took a huge hit anywhere, though, it's with iPods. Year-over-year sales are down a whopping52 percent, with revenue down 55 percent. Those figures suggest that the more expensive iPod models took the hardest hit. That ugly stat aside, there are plenty of positive numbers this time around. As always, we'll be listening in on Apple's earnings conference call, so stay tuned.

51m iPhones and 26m iPads were sold by Apple in Q4 2013.
Both numbers are record-breaking for the firm, which in the same period a year before sold 47.8m iPhones and 22.9m iPads.
The sales led to revenue of $57.6bn and net profit of $13.1bn – which was flat –for the quarter.
CEO Tim Cook didn’t reveal any breakdown of the sales figures though did concede that “demand for the iPhone 5C was different than anticipated”, with the general consensus being that the not-so-low-priced ‘budget’ model has underperformed.
Samsung, however, sold 86m smartphones in the same period with Reuters reporting that the latest Strategy Analytics numbers show that Samsung claimed a 29.6 per cent share of the global Q4 smartphone market.
Apple claimed 17.6 per cent, down from 22 per cent a year before.
Overall in 2013 global smartphone shipments grew 41 per cent to reach a record-breaking 990m units. For the year as a whole Samsung claimed 32.2 per cent of the market and Apple 15.5 per cent.
Apple’s numbers for the next quarter will for the first time include sales resulting from its deal with China Mobile which saw the iPhone launch in the region earlier this month.

Google is rumoured to be readying the axe for its Nexus hardware line.
BGR reports that Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin has claimed on Twitter that the Nexus brand will be discontinued in 2015, with the upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone likely to be one of the final launches.
Google’s hardware interest will persist, however, with an extension of its ‘Play Edition’ licensed releases. To date that has seen the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One become available in vanilla Android ‘Play Edition’ versions, without any of the manufacturer bloatware included on the device.
To date several companies have been tasked with producing Nexus hardware including HTC (Nexus One), Samsung (Nexus S and 10), LG (Nexus 4 and 5) and Asus (Nexus 7).

Soul Fjord is now available on the Ouya store. Developed by Airtight Games, the rhythm-action game stars an afro-sporting viking named Magnus Jones, who is hacking through enemies to get to the afterlife nightclub Valhalla. The developer describes its gameplay as "an extreme mash-up of rhythm game meets dungeon crawler with a roguelike twist," so death in the Norse mythology-based world holds some permanence, as seen in the game's launch trailer. Soul Fjord is free to download and supported by in-game purchases.
Airtight previously launched first-person puzzler Quantum Conundrum for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Creative Director Kim Swift also served as co-creator of Valve's hit puzzle-platformer Portal. If that's not enough star power for the funky game, its soundtrack comes from Grammy-nominatedJourney composerAustin Wintory.

A new eight-inch Samsung tablet appears to have been discovered.
The currently unnamed ‘SM-T330’ model was originally spotted on the Bluetooth SIG site, which approves and regulates the use of Bluetooth technology devices.
The same model number also appeared on the website of Indian import/export database Zauba, which revealed that the device has an eight-inch screen.
Some observers have argued that the device could be the as-yet unannounced Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and may use an AMOLED display.

It's no secret that apps like maps or local weather know your current location, and you're probably cool with that because you want to use the handy services they provide in exchange. But chances are there are many other apps on your phone, anything from dictionaries to games, that are also geolocating your every move without your knowledge or permission. Now researchers are developing a new app to police these smartphone spies, by tracking which apps are secretly tracking you, and warning you about it. Before your eyes glaze over at the mention of yet another privacy tool, it's worth noting that this new app is the first to be able to provide this line of defense between snooping apps and smartphone users for Android phones. Android's operating system is engineered not to allow apps to access information about other apps. But a team at Rutgers University found a way around that, by leveraging a function of Android's API to send a signal whenever an app requests location information from the operating system.MIT Technology Review reported on the research today."

A new report says that games spending on both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store overtook portable gaming last year.
App Annie’s 2013 Retrospective report says that global App Store games spend overtook dedicated games portable software spend at the end of 2012 and Google Play overtook it in Q1 2013.
In Q4 2012 handheld console games spend ranked above both App Store and Global play. By Q2 2013 Google Play had overtaken portables and while portable gaming grew between Q2 and Q3 it was unable to catch Google Play, while App Store had surged far ahead.
The portable console numbers are inclusive of both digital and packaged games sales. Ad revenue is excluded from the figures.

It was just three weeks ago that Nokia pushed out its Lumia Black software update to the Lumia 925 and 1020, with the promise that other Lumia phones would get updated asap. Well, sure enough, the Lumia 820 and 920 on AT&T have received the software patch, according to WPCentral. As on other Lumia devices, the update brings app folders, Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, an updated Glance screen and the unified Nokia Camera app. No RAW shooting, unfortunately -- that's a luxury reserved for 1020 and 1520 owners -- but you'll otherwise enjoy the same updates as anyone else with a newish Windows Phone 8 device. At any rate, feel free to get your download on, and do let us know in the comments how it all goes.

Late last year, Samsung found itself in trouble over claims it had secretly spied on Apple and Nokia documents to gain a better position in patent deals. It denied any wrongdoing, saying it hadn't done so wilfully, and now US judge Paul S. Grewal has finally drawn the same conclusion. PCWorld reports that the US District Court for the Northern District of California ruled Wednesday that the Korean company could not have used confidential information for its patent licensing talks with Nokia, a deal that was extended in November, because it already knew all of the terms ahead of the leak.
The court considered sanctions against Samsung after the company's legal negotiator, Dr. Seungho Ahn, had reportedly told Nokia that its terms with Apple "were known to him," even though they were marked "highly confidential -- attorneys' eyes only." Up to 50 Samsung employees were said to have been given non-redacted copies of Apple documents by its external counsel Quinn Emanuel, which included patent deals with Nokia, but also Ericsson, Sharp and Philips. While Samsung has escaped further action, the court will force its legal representatives to cover both Apple and Nokia's legal fees, effectively making the "junior associate working late one night" pay for underusing that big black marker.

Apple's usually pretty quick when it comes to fixing issues with its software, and today is no exception. The iPhone maker has begun delivering iOS 7.0.5 to 5s and5c models that are available in China, an update that is expected to solve "network provisioning" for some affected handsets there. This comes shortly after Apple finally announced a deal to bring the iPhone to China Mobile, which put an end to a long, long period of negotiations and landed its shiny new devices on the carrier. As such, and even though the changelog doesn't single the network out, iOS 7.0.5 would appear to be tailored for China Mobile subscribers who recently bought an iPhone. Either way, for those of you outside of China, no need to be hunting for this particular version -- it's only for those who actually need it.

A new version of Android gaming console Ouya has been released in the US and is available for $129.
In addition to a refined controller, it features 16GB of memory, an upgrade from the 8GB that the original model launched with. The new version also features better WiFi connectivity and is loaded with the latest firmware.
The original Ouya will still be available for $99.
Although GAME and Amazon UK both sold the Ouya at launch, at the time of writing they do not have the new version listed for sale.
In CVG's Ouya review Chris Scullion said the "lack of a visible download queue, the zero visibility of prices in store, the horrible controller lag, the weak Wi-Fi receiver, the blocks on fully expanding the storage" let the device down.
"Even basic stuff like the option to change the display settings... all of these things need to be remedied before the Ouya can truly be considered a viable alternative."
"That potential can only truly be reached, however, if Ouya continues to work on the console through regular system updates. The indie community has shown its support by having 200 games ready in the first week, now Ouya needs to reciprocate by ensuring its console is as user-friendly as it can possibly be."

If you were jonesing for a 16GB OUYA console but didn't snag the limited white edition, we have good news: you just got a second chance at buying your dream Android gaming system. The company plans to launch a standard 16GB model inmatte black (aka "anthracite") that throws in a handful of important tweaks. It includes the refined gamepad, with higher-quality buttons and a more responsive Bluetooth connection; it also boasts stronger WiFi performance and more recent firmware. Should the color, capacity and tweaks be enough to seal the deal, you can buy the black variant starting today from Amazon or OUYA for $130.

Such sweet, sweet revenge. After the maker of the hugely popular Candy Crushseries of games on the App Store somehow managed to trademark the word "candy" in Europe, other developers have started to fight back by blitzing Apple with an insulin-inducing array of Candy-themed game submissions. More than 100 hastily prepared titles have already been put forward as part of an organized "Candy Jam" protest against the trademarking of common words, including such gobstoppers such as CAN D, ThisGameIsNotAboutCandy, CanDieCanDieCanDieand the inimitable Candy_Game ("Press to hear Candy.")
In the meantime, the developer at the center of the controversy, King.com, continues to pursue legal action against those who use any of words in its arsenal of trademarks, even those that have nothing to do with sugar. This apparently includes one poor dev who had the cheek to use the word "saga" in a Norse mythology-themed game called The Banner Saga -- a title that treads too closely to Candy Crush Saga, according to legal documents filed by King. What's more, now that King has also filed for new trademarks in the US, this whole saga (eek) could be about to get even sicklier.

We've seen the Galaxy Note series get larger and larger as time passes, but this is the first time we've seen the Note actually get smaller. The Galaxy Note 3 Neo has now been officially unveiled by Samsung Poland and will come in two flavors -- 3G and "LTE+," and the latter offers connectivity on higher-speed Category 4 networks (up to 150 Mbps down/50 Mbps up). The two share a lot of similarities, but there are a couple key differences as well: As you might expect, the LTE+ model is the more specced-out of the pair and offers a hexa-core processor consisting of two 1.7GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 cores. The 3G (HSPA+ 21 Mbps) version, on the other hand, will enjoy a quad-core 1.6GHz processor of unknown make.
So what's important about the new Neos? Both versions of the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean device feature a 5.5-inch 720p Super AMOLED panel with full S Pen capability, which means you'll be able to take advantage of Air Command, S Note, Multi-Window and other pen-related functions; in other words, it'll be a less-expensive version of the Note 3 for those who want the functionality without the absolute top-of-the-line features. It even comes with the same leatherlike back cover as its flagship counterpart (shown below).
The 162.5g Neo is 8.6mm thick, is compatible with Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch and comes with a pretty decent array of specs: You're looking at a 3,100mAh battery, 8MP rear camera/2MP front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, IR, NFC, WiFi 802.11a/ac/b/g/n, 16GB internal storage and microSDXC capacity up to 64GB. Not too shabby for a "Note 3 mini" of sorts, although we're not sure what the price is at present time. Samsung says we should expect a global rollout next month (except the US and the UK, if the company hasn't changed its mind) in our choice of black, white or green.

50 per cent increase in shipments compared to 2012.
Worldwide tablet shipments reached 217.1 million units in 2013, up from 144.2 million shipped the year before, 50.6 per cent year-on-year growth.
Q4 tablet sales grew to an impressive 76.9 million units representing 62.4 per cent growth compared to the previous quarter, and 28.2 per cent up form the year before, according to the IDC.
Apple’s iPad led the way, shipping 26 million units in the fourth quarter, up from 14.1 million in Q3 and 22.9 million in Q412. However the 13.5 per cent year-on-year growth was considerably lower than the industry average.
Tom Mainelli, research director, at IDC, said: “It’s becoming increasingly clear that markets such as the US are reaching high levels of consumer saturation and while emerging markets continue to show strong growth this has not been enough to sustain the dramatic worldwide growth rates of years past.”
Samsung stayed in second place with a 18.8 per cent global share in the tablet market, this is however down from 18.9 per cent from the previous quarter, but up a whopping 13 per cent from the same quarter a year before.
Mainelli continued: “We expect commercial purchases of tablets to continue to accelerate in mature markets, but softness in the consumer segment – brought about by high penetration rates and increased competition for the consumer dollar – point to a more challenging environment for tablets in 2014 and beyond.”
CCS Insight reported that UK tablet sales dropped three million from 2013, and that smaller tablets will dominate the future market.
