Edge publisher Future has launched iGamer, a monthly, interactive guide to the very best of iOS gaming that is available now on the App Store.
The publication seeks to address one of the biggest problems on the App Store: discoverability. With hundreds of new games being released every day, it's becoming increasingly hard to find the wheat among all that chaff.
Reviews are grouped by genre, with trailers, gameplay footage and screenshots available with a single click. iGamer is available for Ł1.99 per single issue, with subscriptions beginning at Ł1.49, from the source link below.

The iPad was made to do many things, but windowed multitasking wasn't one of them. Leave it to theCydia Store to provide a new app that delivers individual, rotatable, scalable, untabbed windows. Quasar, from developer Pedro Franceschi, let's you do just that across multiple apps -- without relying on home button double-taps or tricky multi-finger gestures. The video below makes it seem prettymagical, so take a look and let us know what you think.

Korean electronics giant LG has announced that it will not be making any further Windows Phone 7 handsets.
It came to the decision having claimed that “the total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure”.
Instead the company will press ahead with its future plans for Android handsets, although WPCentral does add that LG intends to “continue research and development efforts” on Microsoft’s format.
Samsung, HTC and key Microsoft partner Nokia remain as the main WP7 partners pushing forwards.

Customers told Eliminate will close on May 25th; no reason for cancellation given
Social gaming outfit Ngmoco has pulled its free-to-play iOS shooter Eliminate from the App Store after apparently generating a lack of revenue.
As uncovered by TouchArcade, customers are now greeted with a popup stating the game will be canned on May 25th, but does not give a reason for the title’s closure.
Eliminate, one of the first free-to-play titles to arrive on iOS in 2009, is a four-player first-person shooter, that enabled users to purchase energy with real money, allowing them to buy in-game armour and weapon upgrades.
Ngmoco has previously closed other online freemium games, such as several titles in its Epic Wars series, and said at the time that withdrawing support for its titles was “nothing something we do lightly”.
“We work hard maintaining and growing communities on our other games and will continue to do so,” read a statement on the cancellations.

So, you've changed your phone number to escape that stalker (look, we're sorry, we just wanted to sell you a pyramid scheme), but how do you let all 104 of your remaining friends know without manually texting 'em? The answer lies in Apple's newly granted patent, which aims to end the tedium by having your device recognize when your number switches and automatically send an updated contact entry to everyone in your address book. Of course, there's nothing in the claims to say it's discriminatory, so now we've got your number again -- have you changed your mind about that pyramid scheme?

As the poet once said, "Mo' apps, mo' problems", or something like that. The Windows Phone Marketplace continues to grow and with more eyeballs on it, Microsoft is making sure devs know the rules that will keep their apps in the store instead of on the sideline. Trademark and copyright issues headline the new areas of enforcement, followed up by making sure bulk published apps are in the right categories, packaged with tile images and branding that make it clear which one is which and what they do. Rounding out the list are keywords -- pepper your app with popular, but unrelated terms at your own peril -- and apps that currently overstep the allowed boundary "racy" content. In the end only you, the users, can report if these policies are making it easier to navigate the ever expanding amount of apps so let us know -- are things clogged up with intentionally mislabeled crapware, or is it smooth sailing?

The March smartphone market share tally for the US is in from comScore, and it paints a familiar picture that's rosy for Apple, Google and Samsung, but not so flush-cheeked for everyone else. Android is still tops and jumped almost four points to 51 percent of new American buyers. Apple's still riding high after shipping 35.1 million iPhones, however, and moved up to 30.7 percent. As is often becoming the case, it was Microsoft and RIM that took the biggest hit, with the BlackBerry dropping as much as Android gained and tumbling down to 12.3 percent.
A total of 106 million Americans had a smartphone, nine percent higher than in December, and that was mirrored in the hurt dealt out among total cellphone market share. Outside of Samsung's gangbuster runin smartphones keeping it on top at 26 percent, the only other company to move up as an individual cellphone brand was Apple, which staked out 14 percent of the US cellphone space for itself. HTC, Motorola and LG are all shedding market share, with HTC no doubt hoping that the One X and One S will turn its fortunes around pretty soon.

In 1993, we were too busy getting our chat room trolling on to play classic adventure games like The 7th Guest. Thankfully for us, modern technology lets us revisit older works via new platforms. The 7th Guest, for instance, has been available for quite some time on iOS and OS X.
But hey, maybe you – like us – have yet to purchase Trilobyte's seminal work? You'll be glad to hear, then, that the OS X and iOS versions of The 7th Guest are totally free today in celebration of May Day. We're not second-guessing it either! Free game!

Android devices set to dominate the market with 48 per cent share.
The smartphone market will continue to boom in the next five years to hit 1.7 billion shipments in 2017, according to researcher Ovum, citing a CAGR of 24.9 per cent from 2011 onwards.
Meanwhile, the overall mobile phone market – including feature phones – will rise at a CAGR of 6.3 per cent between 2011 and 2017, which will be driven by emerging markets.
However, developed markets such as North America and Western Europe will almost entirely purchase smartphones only, though feature phones will continue to play a fixture in emerging areas.
Adam Leach, principal analyst at Ovum, said: "Android will dominate the smartphone market over the next five years.
"While Apple has defined the smartphone market since it introduced the iPhone in 2007, we’re now seeing a sharp rise in the shipment volumes of Android, signaling its appeal to leading handset manufacturers."

Infographic shows Apple devices trail vehicle sales by just 13m sales.
Best Computer Science Degrees is behind the infographic, which takes a look at just how big Apple really is.
Apple has sold more than 200 million iOS-powered devices since the platform was launched in 2008, and putting that in to context, there has been 213 million cars sold worldwide since the same time across all manufacturers.
Additionally, 72 million iPhones were sold last year alone, which is almost the entire weight of the Eiffel Tower.

This week was a big one for the beleaguered Canadian OEM. It hosted its annual BlackBerry World conference in the US and used the event to unveil more details of its make-or-break OS upgrade, BB10.
The QNX-based platform was first announced last year, but in the interim RIM has endured such a nightmare - falling sales, signal outages, boardroom exits - that the new OS has assumed messianic status.
RIM CEO Thorston Heins talked it up, of course. He said: "With BlackBerry 10, we are building a core computing engine and platform and will augment that with consumer application services."
At the expo, RIM demonstrated a new user interface based on Cascade, the technology from TAT (The Astonishing Tribe), which it bought in December 2010.
This features an adaptive keyboard that adjusts to typing style, keyboard gestures and a WebOS-style card interface to swipe between apps.

Publishing giant claims notice of closure was 'sent in error'
Rock Band for iOS has not been dropped by EA despite users receiving a service cancellation message, the publisher has said.
Customers had reported that upon starting the game, they received a message stating the title was set to shut down on May 31st, and would no longer be playable.
But a statement from the company sent to Cnethas now claimed that the message was sent out in error, and the game will carry on as usual.
"Rock Band for iOS will remain live - the in-app message users received yesterday was sent in error," read the statement.
"We apologise for the confusion this caused. We're working to clarify the issue that caused the error and will share additional information as soon as possible."

We could all use a little feedback, right? Even Apple. The company has been toying around with the concept of haptic feedback for a while now, at least so far as patent applications are concerned. Another application filed in November or 2010 has surfaced. Of course, what we told you back in 2009 about the tenuous connection between an application and an actual product is as relevant as ever. Still, Apple's concept for a "tiered haptic system" which "may use one or more arrays of shape change elements to provide a wide range of tactile feedback" demonstrates that, at least as of late 2010, Cupertino was still working to rethink the way it sees touchscreens.

Research firm IDC predicted there would be a steep drop off in tablet shipments during Q1 of 2012. Following the surge of sales during the holiday season, a fall of 34 percent, while certainly staggering, is hardly surprising. But there's bad news: shipments failed to meet even those bleak predictions. Shipments fell by 38.4 percent, thanks in large part to Android slates stumbling dramatically. After a reasonably impressive holiday season, IDC expected Android would continue to make inroads in the market. Instead, the number of units moved dropped drastically, allowing Apple to not just maintain its position at the top of the heap, but assert an unquestionable dominance not seen since the early days of Honeycomb. After accounting for 54.7 percent of all tablet shipments in Q4 of 2011, the iPad opened up an impressive lead, claiming 68 percent of the market in Q1 of 2012. What's more, after catapulting to the number two spot by shipping 4.8 million units at the end of last year, Amazon fell to number three -- accounting for only 4 percent of tablets shipped, a precipitous fall from 16.8 percent last quarter. That's good news for Samsung, however, which reclaimed its place as first runner up slate wars. For more, check out the PR after the break.

While it may not be the first time we've come across such a concept, this PoP Video add-on is certainly quite different than, say, WooWee's Cinemin Swivel -- and significantly cheaper, too. The PoP Video pairs up with iPod touches (3rd / 4th generation) and iPhones (4 / 4S) via Apple's proprietary 30-pin connector, essentially turning your device into an unorthodox pico projector. According to PoP's site, the 3.5 ounce peripheral's capable of 960 x 540 video output and can give you up to two hours of "playtime" on a single charge -- achieved by way of micro-USB. It all wouldn't be worth it without the free iOS app, though, which lets folks tinker with settings and do what it's intended to do: project videos, pics as well as browsing within Safari. The $99 PoP Video is up for pre-order now, and you can get a quick glimpse of the accessory in action just past the break.

Just in case June wasn't busy enough for mobile app developers, between Apple's WWDC and Google I/O, Microsoft has thrown its hat into the ring. It's scheduling a Windows Phone Developer Summit in San Francisco for June 20th and 21st, just a week before Google's meetup. Details are scant in the notice Engadget received, although Microsoft teases us with the prospects of learning "developer opportunities and platform capabilities in Windows Phone." Whether that means Apollo or just more about Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh (Tango) is still very much a mystery. Either way, it's likely to be good news for Metro-friendly developers crestfallen after MIX was shut down.

Been itching for Facebook's iPhone-dedicated Messenger app to make its way over to the iPad? ? Maybe for the iPhone variant to finally reap the benefits of Skype video chat integration as well? Well, according to 9to5Mac, Camp Zuckerberg is testing both in-house, with the latter planned to hit iPhones this summer. According to the site, one of its trustworthy tipsters was able to grant it access to beta versions of the new apps, and it has the pictures to prove it. Unsurprisingly, the Messenger app for iPad is described as simply a sized-up port of the iPhone version, but surely the bump would be appreciated by many if it ever gets officially released. Perhaps more interesting, though, is having Skype video chat baked into the iPhone version -- tapping an arrow next to a contact initiates your video session, and9to5Mac reports that it's "smooth most of the time." Of course, it's always worth taking such leaks with a grain of salt, but hit up the source link below if you'd like to find more information and screenshots of the apps in question.

Sales are turned to ash, falling from 4.8m.
Market analyst IDC reports a dismal start to Q1 for Amazon, following an impressive debut in mid-Q4 when it became the world's number two tablet maker by securing 16.8 per cent of the market with the Kindle Fire.
The fall was likely due to its lack of international presence, as Amazon chose to release the tablet in the US only.
The drastic turnaround in sales performance allowed Samsung to overtake Amazon and push it into to third place, while Lenovo secured the fourth position, leaving Barnes & Noble in fifth.
Unsurprisingly, Apple continued to lead the market with the iPad. However, sales fell from 15.4 million in Q4 to 11.8 million, but it was still able to grow its market share from 54.7 per cent in 68 per cent as demand for Android tablets waned.
Meanwhile, total worldwide tablet shipments hit 17.4 million units in Q1, down 38.4 per cent from the record-breaking 28.2 million units in Q4.

Average American consumes nearly five hours of video a day. Oh, the humanity!
A new Nielsen Cross-Platform Report says US viewers are diversifying their viewing experience, although 98 per cent still watch on a traditional TV set.
The number of homes with an HDTV now stands at 80.2 million, which indicates that the TV screen is still the centre of the experience and that supplementary screens are used in tandem with it.
Nielsen says live and timeshifted TV remains the primary role of the TV, accounting for more than 33 hours per week.
Meanwhile game consoles can now be found in 45 percent of TV homes, an increase of three per cent over last year, and the smartphone is becoming a kind of portable TV.
The 33.5 million mobile owners that now watch video on their phones represents an increase of 35.7 per cent on last year.

RIM to offer new social app to work as 'Game Center' for BlackBerry 10 OS devices
Research in Motion has announced that they will pursue a social gaming hub for their market, with a new app to be launched on BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system devices. The new hub will serve as a gaming social platform for users to connect, interact and talk with one another. At the present time, the new app is simply known as "Games."
The new platform compares closely to Apple's Game Center, in that those people using BlackBerrys will now have a central meeting place for gaming activities. RIM has announced that the Games app will integrate with BlackBerry Messenger as well as Scoreloop's social gaming network. Further plans for multiplayer gaming capabilities are being looked into, with consideration for both turn-based and real-time gaming.
Things look to be going up for game developers on the BlackBerry platform - a platform that has long been regarded as miniscule. A wave of new mobile titles are coming to BlackBerry, and RIM is making moves to incentivize developers into working on the platform.

It truly is the end of an era. In just under two weeks, Microsoft will follow through with its plan to shutter the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace for good. In a cautionary email, Redmond asked that those still using a WM device "install any available updates in advance of the [...] shut-down," scheduled for May 17th. Not all hope is lost for the antiquated mobile operating system, though, as the announcement reminds technology holdouts that application updates can be acquired directly from developers (good luck with that). If you're out on the town this evening having a few drinks with friends, remember to pour one out for Windows Mobile, a true OG smartphone operating system.

It's always refreshing to hear the head of a major corporation cop to past mistakes -- particularly in front of a large crowd of on-lookers. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson admitted some misgivings about the way the carrier handled iPhone data, telling a crowd at the Milken Institute's Global Conference in Los Angeles, "My only regret was how we introduced pricing in the beginning, because how did we introduce pricing? Thirty dollars and you get all you can eat." Stephenson drove the point home by adding, "Every additional megabyte you use in this network, I have to invest capital."
And, for the record, that certainly wasn't the only thing about the iPhone that kept the exec up at night. Stephenson again,You lie awake at night worrying about what is that which will disrupt your business model," he said. "Apple iMessage is a classic example. If you're using iMessage, you're not using one of our messaging services, right?
No one ahead said it was easy being the chief.

Would it be ironic if Android developers did an end-run around Microsoft patents by using Microsoft's own C#? Or if Google kiboshed its Oracle brouhaha with the aid of none other than Redmond? We're asking because Xamarin, the wacky open source implementer of .NET, has ported Android to Microsoft's C# with its XobotOS project. Although just an experiment and unlikely to solve Google'sissues, the team showed that running the robot on C# instead of Java gave fewer coding limitations, better battery life and direct graphics access. Additionally, Xamarin reports "massive" speed gains on its HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia when running the side-project port -- no surprise given C#'s machine heritage. Sure, it's pure speculation that Mountain View and its developers would ever change their Java MO, but a little patent relief and faster Android devices in one kill shot? That's a sweet idea.

Not all iPads are made equal, even if they're all packaged and branded identically. There's a major new mutation within the 2nd generation tablet and it brings significantly better battery life. Specifically, the fourth and latest production model of the iPad 2 (known as iPad2,4) has not only a lower price tag ($399) but also a new 32nm processor, which is significantly smaller and more efficient than those in previous iPad 2s (which had 45nm chips and an older transistor design). According to AnandTech, this results in an overall 16 percent increase in battery life during web browsing and as much as a 30 percent boost when playing games. Obviously that's worth having, but how can you tell if a boxed-up iPad 2 has the new processor before taking it to the checkout? Here's the downer: you can't. Until retailers' inventories naturally flood with the updated type, the only way to tell is by switching the slate on and running a utility like GeekBench -- and perhaps there'll be circumstances where you can give that a go on the shop floor. Alternatively, if third-party sellers discover that their stock is the iPad2,4, they could pull off a Darwinian win-win by marketing that fact to buyers.

Apple's not gonna like this one, but news of the perpetual cat-and-mouse game between it and the hacking community continues with the announcement of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1, which is now alive and kicking on the iPhone 4. The good news went out in the form of a tweet from pod2g, and while the naughty bit of software isn't yet available for public download, we can only hope that it'll soon be ready for mass consumption. As you'll recall, we last saw hints of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iPad (also iOS 5.1), which similarly remains elusive to the public. At any rate, we welcome the progress -- now bring on the exploits.

"Sascha Segan writes that although Verizon adamantly denies steering customers away from Apple's iPhones in favor of 4G LTE-enabled Android devices, he is convinced that Verizon has a strong reason to push buyers away from the iPhone. 'Here's the problem,' writes Segan. 'Verizon has spent millions of dollars rolling out its massive LTE network' but the carrier can't easily add capacity on its old 3G network. Since the iPhone isn't a 4G, phone sales of Verizon iPhones just crowd up their already busy 3G network while their 4G network has plenty of space. 'The iPhone is a great device. But it's making a crowded network more crowded. Until the LTE iPhone comes along, to rebalance its network, Verizon may quietly push Android phones.

No, that's not a QWERTY feature phone you're looking at -- it's Google's earliest Android development device, the Sooner. While the HTC-sourced phone itself hasn't been a secret, the build of Android on this particular specimen, obtained by Steven Troughton-Smith, is something few eyes outside of Mountain View have seen. As Mr. Smith notes, this isn't the first public build of Android that was detailed in November 2007 (M3), but rather an earlier version from May of that same year. The non-touch UI is almost totally unlike what eventually shipped with the touch-friendly HTC Dream, aside from obviously housing Android's basic framework and apps including G Talk and the like. We won't spoil it for you, though, so hit up the source link below to see Smith's full walkthrough and analysis of the device that once served as the initial development vehicle for Android.

Sam and Max may have gone beyond the boundaries of time and space in their latest series of episodic adventures, but does that mean they must also travel beyond the boundaries of your budget?
Nay, says Telltale Games, and to prove it the developer has made the first episode of Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space on iOS totes free, and discounted the other four episodes to $2.99 a piece. These aren't permanent pricing changes, of course, so anyone looking to get their adventuring feet wet with something a little more family friendly than the alternative should take note.

Plugged your iDevice into an iTunes-equipped machine lately? You should. Apple has just let loose iOS 5.1.1, a seemingly minor point update that actually promises to fix quite a few (potentially) substantial quirks. Coming two months to the day after the iOS 5.1 software update, the extra 0.0.1 is said to improve reliability of the HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut, address bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks and solve a few issues that were affecting AirPlay video playback "in some circumstances." There's also improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List, and Apple has purportedly fixed an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase. Sucked the update down yourself? Let us know how it goes in comments below, and peek the full changelog just after the break.
Update: Looks like iOS 5.1.1 has already been jailbroken. Huzzah!

Juniper Research claims TV streaming and catch-up services appeal to consumers because they like being able to take charge of their viewing schedules, while smartphones give users additional control, allowing them to 'placeshift' the content by watching it on the move.
Real-time viewing is also important to the rise of mobile TV, as content such as sports and news can be watched live via smartphones, allowing viewers to stay connected wherever they are.
Charlotte Miller, report author, Juniper, said: "The smartphone really allows the consumer to transport the TV experience out of the home, allowing them to view live and on-demand content while on the move.
"The ubiquity of free wi-fi also allows users of these services to access content without the threat of billshock – driving take up of streamed mobile TV services across all wi-fi-enabled mobile devices."
Further results show almost ten per cent of mobile TV revenues will be generated by tablets by 2016, while subscriptions will make up the majority of revs.

Google’s Android marketplace has surpassed 15bn app downloads since its launch in October of 2008.
A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that the figure was passed for the newly-branded Google Play Store ‘a few weeks ago.’
TechCrunch proposed that Google tabs around 1bn app downloads per month, while Apple still leads with 1.25bn app downloads. Google Play currently offers around 100,000 apps behind Apple's estimated total of 600,000.
In comparison, Apple recently announced their App Store had blown by the 25bn mark.

When summer starts to creep up, so does that dreadful jumble of terms like "swimsuit season," "beach body" and "crippling insecurity." But these crapgadgets would like you to stop being so dang selfish and think about your tech's appearance for a change. After all, what you lack in muscle you can always make up for in accessories that inspire, intrigue and lead others to speculate about your financial standing.
Read - All that darting around corners and covert memo-recording just makes you look creepy, but it could make you look as cool as this . Japanese retailer Strapya World would have you know that its radio transceiver for the iPhone is "made for the everyday awesome person."
Read - Those Swarovski crystals decking out your smartphone? They might as well be lumps of coal. The discerning consumer knows that it's diamonds or nothing, and this $11 million diamond laptop sleeve -- complete with sable fur trim -- is certainly something.
Read - Just as you wouldn't ride a bike without a helmet, you wouldn't be caught dead holding your phone without a ring to secure the device to your finger. Don't you care about safety at all?
Read - Maybe you're one to buck all this flashy materialism, but still want to be recognized for the unique soul that you are. No one will accuse you of gadget snobbery if you stick to a soup can for all your telephony needs.

Those of us who've been eying the Kingston Wi-Drive but have been disappointed with the iOS-first emphasis can rejoice, as a new firmware update is expanding access in a big way. At a minimum, anyone with a web browser can now stream music, photos and videos to their heart's content once they're linked to the drive over WiFi. And if you'd rather use a native app, any Android 2.2 or later device is now an option instead of having to turn to one of Apple's gadgets or the Amazon Kindle Fire. Future Wi-Drives should have the firmware loaded from the get-go. The apps as always remain free, although you'll need to spend a minimum of $50 to join the club with a drive of your own.

For many, one of the biggest causes of jealousy after the Samsung Galaxy S III launch event wasn't that 4.8-inch screen, or the new Exynos innards, it was that beautiful looking Android version of Flipboard. Alas, the Korean mobile giant had enough cunning to secure the popular glossy social network and feed reader all for itself -- for the time being. That is, unless, you're a naughty little xda-developer visitor, perhaps called Valcho, who had the foresight / lack of restraint at the event to nab the .apk from one of the demo phones. He's made it available for all and sundry (well, those with Android phones at least). If you want to see how it looks on your phone, point it at the source link, or be a good spirit, and wait for the official outing.

Sony's announced its first two LTE-capable phones for its Japanese customers -- and there's two of 'em. The Xperia GX is up first, with a 720p 4.6-inch display squeezed in alongside a new 13-megapixel camera -- a first for Sony's mobile family, and presumably its new CMOS sensor. A 1.5 GHz dual-core processor ensures it should all tick along nicely, while the hardware design follows the curves of last year's Xperia Arc, this time with a matte finish. The camera upgrade and huge screen makes a good case for this to be Sony's new flagship device -- mere months since the Xperia S debuted in Europe -- and before the Xperia Ion has even had chance to launch in the US.
It's joined by the Xperia XS, which Sony claims is the world's lightest LTE capable handset, weighing in at just under 100g. It packs a smaller 3.7-inch screen with the same Mobile Bravia engine found on its bigger brother -- and the rest of Sony's recent handsets. It's joined by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (although there's no specifics on what type just yet), a more standard 8-megapixel camera and it wouldn't be a Japanese phone without infrared connectivity, mobile wallet and a mobile TV -- they're all built-in. Both phones will launch in black and white, and Android fans can rest easy, as they'll both arrive with Android 4.0 installed when they hit stores in Japan this summer.

The corners of the Earth that don't have a new iPad have been quickly shrinking, and Apple's tablet is about to get nigh-on inescapable as of this weekend. A round of 23 more countries is getting the 2012 refresh on May 11, most of it being South American countries such as Foxconn's new manufacturing hub, Brazil. Parts of Africa and southeast Asia will be served as well, such as the home of our favoriteunofficial hands-on sessions, Vietnam. Seven Persian Gulf countries will get their Retina Display fix one day later. By the time the weekend is up, the iPad will be available in nearly 90 countries on this planet, which makes it highly likely that anyone reading this article can find the slate in a local retail store.

Apple and Nokia agree that a smaller SIM card will aid them in their quest to create better phones for us all, but the two disagree about what that new SIM should look like. You see,Nokia claims that Cupertino's proposed card violates ETSI's -- the standards body that'll make the final call on the one nano-SIM to rule them all -- requirement that the nano-SIM design preclude people from fitting it into a microSD slot. Well, that complaint didn't fall upon deaf ears, as Apple apparently put SIM maker Giesecke & Devrient to work making a new version that solves the problem with some additional plastic in all the right places. Of course, this new design doesn't address Nokia's claims that its design is technically superior, so it's unlikely to win approval from its Finnish opponents. While Apple's new nano-SIM seems to eliminate one hurdle in its way, RIM's accusation that Apple's attempt to rig ETSI's decision in its favor has yet to be dealt with. That means it'll be a bit before we know if Cupertino's plan for nano-SIM domination will succeed. Stay tuned.

Apple already made clear that it was expanding iOS 5-like notifications to the desktop with OS X Mountain Lion, but it now looks as though that's extending to your web browser, too. Some visitors toiCloud.com have reported seeing notifications show at the top of the page that were both based on iOS' look and which were clearly not ready for prime time -- not unless Default Title for English is a newiCloud feature, at least. There's no indication of how advanced notifications might become in Apple's web portal, or if they'll transition from development cocoon to public butterfly at all. In the meantime, though, keep an eye on the top of your browser and let us know if you see anything leap out in the near future.

Microsoft's "Smoked by Windows Phone" challenge has been long on claims that Windows Phone can outrace your smartphone platform of choice in day-to-day tasks, but it's been short on hard numbers. Until now, that is. Company Evangelist Ben Rudolph claims that over 50,000 smartphones -- or 98 percent of all contenders -- have been beaten in the challenges since the company started running them back at CES, with just 638 people having proved their devices faster at a trade show or a Microsoft Store. That's good news for advocates, although it doesn't come without its share of controversies over fairness and whether or not the challenges overlook the advantages of your Android phone, BlackBerry or iPhone. Ultimately, the real challenge for Microsoft may be translating those successes into real improvements for its so-so market share.

Having become a staple for 35 million life-observing extroverts already, Twitpic has suddenly decided to launch itself into the world of iOS apps. You may justifiably question the point of yet another platform for sharing photos and videos over Twitter, given how well the official app, Instagram and others now handle such things. But then you'd be missing out on a community that has been steadily growing since even before mobile photography took off, and whose visual ramblings are actually much funnier and more amazing than even the brightest shots of the Dutch skyline.

Reached the figure "weeks ago", but strangely decided not announce it.
On Sunday, The Independent said Google Play is on course to pass 15 billion app downloads, though Google told TechCrunch the milestone is old news.
In December, Google Play reached ten billion app downloads, which means the extra five billion downloads could have arrived within Q1, depending on Google's definition of "weeks".
Apple's App Store leads the market with 600,000 apps, while Google Play has around 500,000 apps, leaving BlackBerry App World behind on 70,000 and Windows Phone Marketplace on 50,000, a lot of which are porn-based.
Additionally, the Apple App Store hit 25 billion app downloads in March and awarded a $10,000 iTunes card to the person that hit the milestone.

At Chicago's Billy Goat Tavern, construction workers found physical threats an effective way to discourage smart-ass Whitney Young High School students from playing annoying jukebox songs over and over again. But with Google's newly-patented technology for the Collaborative Rejection of Media for Physical Establishments, you no longer need to resort to violence to prevent Elton John Songs from being played on jukeboxes in bars. Its invention, boasts Google, 'enables customers of an establishment to collaboratively reject a media file that is currently playing and/or pending to be played within that establishment by entering data into a personal wireless portable computing device on their person, for example a cellular telephone.' But don't get your hopes up too high, kids. Much like Google's dual-tier stock plan, the patent calls for 'customer status levels including a premium status and a standard status,' so a premium customer will be able to veto attempts by lowly standard customers to kill his requests to play MC Hammer's 'Can't Touch This'. The patent comes from a quirky Outland Research IP portfolio acquired by Google; its inventor is Louis B. Rosenberg, a Stanford PhD and professional film maker.

Mystery, solved. That SGH-i667 'Mandel' Windows Phone that cropped up earlier in the month (and is shown above on the left)? Word on the street at that point was that it had been nixed from AT&T's lineup, but somehow, that same device actually made the trip to New Orleans. Sure enough, it debuted at CTIA as the Focus 2, a mid-range followup phone that's destined to tempt smartphone buyers to the WP7 side with a rock-bottom $50-on-contract price point. Hard to say if Samsung and AT&T mutually decided to carry through with launch plans after initially spiking 'em (or if that intel was just wrong to begin with), but we can think of it least one recently-canned phone that's hoping it's the former.

Despite their occasional protests to the contrary, both Nintendo and Sony have seen the pervasive mobile market take chunks of the portable gaming industry. The mobile app space burgeoned as game developers undercut each other constantly, in a race toward 99 cents that set a buck as the de facto price point for the new marketplace. This, in turn, made a massive price disparity between mobile games and their handheld competition, which tends to retail for much more. Why buy a $30 DS game, when you can buy 30 games for the same price? However, we're now seeing yet another race all the way to the bottom: free. Even as the PC space is largely adopting a free-to-play, microtransaction-driven business model, the shift is similarly occurring in the mobile market. Recent F2P hits have started a run of similar titles, with some paid apps adopting a free-to-play option. The change began subtly. Rovio's breakout hit Angry Birds may have stuck near the top of the Top Paid Apps charts, but the Top Grossing arena was ruled by little blue men early last year. Smurfs Village spent months as the Top Grossing app, no doubt bolstered by co-marketing for the then-upcoming film. Still, the free app had an inviting price point, and even a few 99 cent purchases per user would easily push it above the revenue for a one-time dollar fee. Then, Tiny Tower became the talk of the iOS App Store blogosphere, using a similar model inspired by social gaming on Facebook, even garnering recognition as Apple's official Game of the Year.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/po...-race-to-zero/

Seeing as how Google Play will soon require applications to disclose their privacy policy, one is now available for Spark 360 (it should be linked from the official Google Play site eventually). I don’t have one for Trophies yet, but it will be essentially the same – your account information is never sent to third parties, and is only stored on your device.
If you’ve noticed that your account has recently been locked, it’s possibly due to the Hotmail 0-day flaw that has already been patched. I received a handful of emails starting around Friday about locked accounts and users being unable to log in or update information in Spark 360. Around Sunday, there had been another spike in accusations of hacking in Google Play comments, and as of this writing (May 2), one or two still appear per day. This suggests to me that not everyone has yet noticed their locked accounts – this is probably exacerbated by the fact that Spark 360 isn’t very vocal about login errors due to an omission that will be corrected in the next release (specifically, the Android version of Spark 360 may not always display an error dialog, so it may be a while before the user learns of any issues).
I’ve written about this at length already, but please note that I take security very seriously, and take precautions to avoid putting anyone’s data at risk. I hope the new Privacy Policy will make this a little more clear and explicit.

A look at how the citizens of the world's largest phone market use their devices.
Last week, we reported that China has became the biggest smartphone market in the world, knocking the US from the top spot, thanks to a 45 per cent year-on-year increase.
Chinese mobile ad firm Guohe is behind the infographic, revealing that 47 per cent of iPhone users have over 50 apps, compared to just 16 per cent for Android.
Meanwhile, 62 per cent of iPhone users have paid for premium apps, falling to just 23 per cent for Android users.

Increasing intricacy could rapidly see making mobile games mimic the triple-A console space, predicts Total War Battles lead
The man leading the Total War Battles team at The Creative Assembly has predicted that mobile developers could soon find themselves facing the same challenges currently prevalent in the sphere of triple-A console games making.
Speaking in a feature in the new edition of Develop, The Creative Assembly's Renaud Charpentier, who lead the internal division that created Total War Battles: Shogun for iOS, stated a belief that as mobile game development tools, team sizes and techniques increase in scope and complexity, studios making mobile titles will soon mimic those making big budget console games.
Initially reflecting on his pleasure at moving from working on the likes of The Creative Assembly's infamously intricate PC games to a small mobile team and a smaller team, Charpentier spoke fondly of the efficiency, creativity and energy he experienced in building an iOS title, drawing comparisons with the console development space in the mid-to-late-ninties.
"It sounds perfect," Charpentier stated. "But it is going to change quickly, because those [mobile] devices are getting more powerful all the time. As that happens, surely we will need more people. It's the same as the change in the console space from PlayStation 1 to Playstation 3. Perhaps the 'iPad 4' will probably be more powerful than a PS3, and you will have big players wanting to do triple-A on the device.
"I don't see how they will avoid having at least 30 or 40 people on the game. That is even already the case at some places making triple-A games for mobile. It's almost going full cirle. A console complexity is starting to be seem when making mobile games."

It's deemed likely that Apple had the top-selling cellphone in Japan this past fall, but how did it do in all of 2011? Quite well, if you go by MMRI's estimates. The iPhone had 30 percent (almost 7.3 million) of the Land of the Rising Sun's 24.2 million sales among individual smartphone labels, or nearly double Sharp's 17.5 percent. Don't think that Android-powered smartphones like the Aquos SH-12C didn't make an impact, though: virtually every other smartphone in Japan, 69 percent, was running some flavor of Google's mobile OS. Apple managed to shake up a sometimes insular overall keitai market as well, having come just short of Fujitsu for the top spot in all cellphones. Researchers are expecting the smartphone space in Japan to grow by a healthy 15 percent in 2012, although it's still a wildcard as to whether or notKDDI's iPhone support will keep Apple riding high for another year.

Remember the 2005 lawsuit over Apple's effort to keep RealNetworks' Harmony DRM off of the iPod, calling the countermeasures an abuse that locked customers into Apple's FairPlay copy protection and the iTunes Store? You're forgiven if you don't -- the complaint was filed in 2005. Even with iTunes having gone primarily DRM-free over three years ago, though, owners of iPods bought between September 12th, 2006 and March 31st, 2009 are just now getting notices that they qualify for a slice of any damages if they register and Rhapsody's former owner the class action group wins in court. Of course, there's no guarantee that RealNetworks former Rhapsody users will win and get you music money to feed your iPod, iPod classic, iPod nano or iPod touch, but unless you're planning to sue Apple yourself, there's no penalty for a legitimate claim.
Update: RealNetworks has chipped in to let us know that it's "not involved in any way" with the lawsuit, which is actually an independent complaint centered around the Rhapsody users themselves. RealNetworks hasn't embroiled itself in a legal fight with Apple to date.

Remember when Nokia said that overwhelming demand had postponed the UK launch of the Lumia 900? Forget it, Phones4U let us know that it received an early shipment of the Finnish flagship and will offer them to customers today instead of next Monday. It's available on Vodafone, Orange and O2 and will set you back between Ł20 and Ł40 each month depending on your plan, either in both Black orWhite, the latter exclusive to the independent seller.

Mame4droid Reloaded v1.2 is released. MAME4droid Reloaded emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.134u4. This MAME4droid version is targeted to Dual-Core devices (1GHz and 512MB RAM minimum), because it is based on a high specs 2009 PC MAME build. Anyway don't expect arcade games of the 90 to work at full speed. With some games that are really bad optimized (like outrun or mk series) you will need at least a 1.5 ghz dual-core device. This is related to MAME build used, since it is targeted to high specs PC's as i said before. This version doesn't have an uml back end ARM dynamic recompiler, which means drivers based on high specs arcade CPUs won't be playable (it has not sense since this games will be slow in any case).
Mame4droid Reloaded Features:
- Save States
- Support for 2.1 and upper Android devices.
- Native support for Android Honeycomb tablets.
- Autorotate.
- HW Keys remapping.
- Touch Controller can be shown/hidden.
- Smooth image.
- Overlay Filters, scalines, CRT..
- Digital or Analog touch selectable.
- Animated touch stick or DPAD.
- Button Layout customizable control.
- iON's iCade and iCP (as iCade mode) external controllers supported.
- Wiimote support using WiiCrotroller Market app.
- Tilt Sensor as left/right.
- 1 to 6 buttons optionally shown.
- Options for video aspect ratio, scaling, rotate.
Mame4droid Reloaded v1.2 Changelog:
(Added local multiplayer, Added true analog input, Fixed Taito X system, Added P4,P3,P3 as P1 input)

[Andy] is taking the complexity of a smartphone-controlled garage door down a notch with this project. He’s not interested in checking on the state of the door (open or closed) using a video feed, or in controlling the thing from anywhere in the world. He just wants to use his Android as the remote control and we say amen to that.
The circuitry in the garage is pretty simple. A relay is used to simulate a button press on the in-garage wired opener. This relay is driven by an Arduino which uses a Bluetooth shield for connectivity. Since his Android phone has a Bluetooth modem the rest of the project is just app development. As you can see in the video, the app automatically connects to the Arduino when it is launched, then waits for the button press to send the electronic equivalent of ‘Open Sesame”.
The project covers a series of posts so if you want to see how he got the app up and running make sure to browse through his archives. The next iteration for this app needs to be a background widget that enables Bluetooth, connects to the Arduino, and send s the open command all with one press.

Despite the obvious use of a lot of wire, this project is actually a wireless charging system. [Jared] built it as a way to explore the concepts behind transferring power inductively. Alternating current on one of the white coils induces current on the other. This is then rectified, and regulated for use as a 5V charger. In this case it powers his iPod, but any USB device should work with the setup.
The transmitter uses the power supply from an old laptop as a source. Some filtering and a couple of MOSFETS are responsible for generating the AC current on the transmitting coil. The receiving coil feeds the bridge rectifier. In the writeup that voltage is fed to a 7805 regulator to provide a stable 5V output. However, in the video demo after the break [Jared] shows off the boost converter that he uses on his improved circuit. This way if the voltage drops due to poor alignment of the coils it will still be able to provide a steady output.
We’ve seen the same coil concept used to add wireless charging to cellphones too.

Will be "much cleaner, faster and reliable."
Google's Maps service is a flagship product used across the globe, which even mobile rival Apple can't avoid using as a native app on its iOS devices.
However, 9to5mac claims Apple will launch its own maps app that runs across iOS 6-powered iPhones, iPads and iPods in order to sever ties with Google and apply increased pressure to Android.
Sources claim the app will be similar to Google Maps, but provide a 'much cleaner, faster and more reliable experience' with an unveiling taking place at the Apple Developers Conference in June.

Networking hub to connect Android game players in one location.
Apple's 'Game Centre' is a native app that connects players across a number of iOS games, recording scores into leaderboards and achievements. Now, Business Insider reckons Google plans to copy Apple and launch a version for Android.
An industry source, said: "They are starting to really understand all of the needs and wants to make a game really successful. As recently as even a year ago, that really wasn't part of their institutional DNA, But I think they're getting there."
The Google software is set to include 'social achievements', offering similar awards and points like the Apple Game Centre inspiration.
Mobile gaming and apps are of key importance to most smartphone users, and most new releases are compatible across iOS and Android.
Seemingly, Google plans to up the ante against its Apple rival by positioning itself as a more gamified platform. This, of course, was one of the reasons that the firm renamed the Android Market app store as Google Play earlier this year.

The Judge presiding over the Oracle vs Google court case has refused to rule on the issue of 'fair use' over Google's use of Java APIs in the Android OS, further suggesting that damages could be so low that the damages phase of the trial may not be necessary.
In what looks at this stage like a substantial victory for Google, Judge William Alsup said "it wouldn't be right" for him to rule on the issue of "fair use", the point that a jury had failed to decide in their protracted deliberations.
Alsup criticised Oracle's counsel given that the lawyers had first insisted on a trial by jury and now apparently were asking Alsup to rule on the issue of fair use as a "point of law."
So far Google has only been found to have infringed the copyright on a handful of lines of Java code which ultimately can only result in statutory damages up to US$150,000, trivial given the wealth of the companies involved and the cost of the trial itself.
The next phase of the trial will decide if Google infringed on two of Oracle's acquired Java patents.
Alsup's ruling also leaves the door open for him to grant Google's motion for a mistrial. Given that Alsup has refused to rule on fair use, limiting Google's liability to pocket change, Google may be happy with the result as it stands.
For now, the issue of whether software APIs constitute "fair use" seems to be an open question.

Per usual, the Dev-Team whiz-kids have been hard at work trying to make your jailbroken iOS life a tad bit easier. This time around, MuscleNerd & Co. have outed their latest revision of RedSn0w (0.9.11b1), allowing folks using the new iPad, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S to downgrade to lower firmwares for jailbreaking purposes -- a feature others have been enjoying for some time now. As expected, you'd still need those saved SHSH blobs from the previous firmware in order to do so, and if your device depends on an unofficial unlock, it's recommended (with a few exceptions) to steer clear since this method will upgrade your baseband. Speaking of, the Dev-Team also notes you should stick with an earlier version of Redsn0w unless you must have the new tidbits. Those of you eager to give it a try can head over to the Dev-Tem Blog to grab yourself a copy.

Rumours suggest Apple will release a smaller iPad this Autumn at a lower price point.
Dubbed the iPad Mini, the new device will reportedly boast a 7-inch Retina Display, according to iMore (via Stuff). It will initially only be available as an 8GB model.
Sources also claim it will retail for between $200 and $250 – the equivalent of Ł125 to Ł155.
Apparently the iPad mini will be identical to the current 9.7-inch iPad, meaning the tablet's 2048x1536 resolution will be delivered at 365ppi.
Naturally, nothing official has emerged from Apple yet be we'll be sure to let you know if and when it does.

You might remember Le Pan's tablets from CES this year, of which only one was truly ready at the time. The company is now ready to hit the US in earnest, but you'll have to forget the company name along with the earlier designs: it's now Matsunichi, and it's planning to kick off its US-ready makeover through the MarquisPad MP977. The tablet shares the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display of the Le Pan II, but it's now running a slightly speedier dual-core, 1.2GHz TI chip (likely the same OMAP 4430 as in the Droid Xyboard), ships with Android 4.0 out of the gate and comes in a sleeker -- not to mention browner -- shell. Storage is being cut in half over the Le Pan II to just 4GB between the internal memory and a bundled microSD card, though, and the battery is good for a very modest five hours. Nonetheless, the $249 sticker and a May release will put the MP977 in the running with the slower but more capaciousGalaxy Tab 2 7.0.
Matsunichi also teased us with a roadmap for a pair of future tablets in the process. The 10.1-inch MP1010 will keep the resolution, but it'll run on a quicker 1.5GHz TI processor and carry a total of 10GB of space when it appears sometime between June and August. If those 0.4 inches of extra glass are just too much to bear, an MP979 will bring all the extra storage and speed of the MP1010 to a 9.7-inch screen sometime between August and September.

A successor to the Facebook games sensation Farmville appears to be at the final stages of development.
Publisher Zynga appears to be trialling the game’s sequel in the Philippines, though the title is given the assumed working title “Big Harvest”.
The game appears to have undergone a graphical overhaul, with improved definition, animations and detail.
No official release date has been set for the game.
“We don’t comment on what we may or may not be working on,” Zynga told TechCrunchin a statement.

Tattoo artist Jersey from Dynasty Tattoo (in New Jersey) implanted sub-dermal magnets in his arm to wear his iPod touch like a watch. From the article: '“Those magnets are actually called micro-dermal anchors, and in body piercing they are very common. The tops are actually just 5 millimetre magnetic tops,” he said. “I took the ends of magnets and actually adhered them to the back of the iPod, and that’s how they click into my skin.” He added: “I can go for a run and it won’t come off. I’ve already taken it to the gym and jogged with it on.”'"

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple plans to announce an update to its iCloud service at the WWDC in June. The revamp will include new photo-sharing features that will also allow users to comment on images -- bringing a little social flavor to the data syncing service. The personal media syncing is also going to expand to support videos, allowing you to quickly upload clips from your phone and have them appear on your computer. If that weren't enough, the same sources also claim that Apple is building out a syncing service for Notes and Reminders, which will debut alongside iOS 6, as previous leaks have indicated. Obviously none of this is concrete, but it certainly sounds as if Apple is planning to put some serious effort into making iCloud succeed where MobileMe failed. Such a dramatic upgrade might also help explain the trickle of tips we've been receiving this morning that iCloud's email service is down.

It's hard to imagine a job with more creative freedom than working on games like Rez and Child of Eden, but some former Q? Entertainment staffers have found it, breaking off to form their own indie developer.
Monstars Inc., a company founded by Rez programmer, Lumines designer, andChild of Eden programming lead Osamu Kodera, just released its first game,Kotomon for iOS. Despite breaking with Q?, Kotomon shows that Kodera and co. haven't broken with everything they know – Kotomon promises "Dancing! Monsters! Shooting! Action!" as you slide to collect monsters and then fire them at enemies, with each attack creating new beats in the music.
Kotomon is out today at a promotional $2.99 price; it'll go up to $3.99 after May 31.

Just seen this over at ebay UK for a great deal:

Sharper, smarter, and better, the Bluetooth-enabled 3rd Generation Apple iPad is nothing short of a technological breakthrough. The Retina display of The new iPad, with 2048-by-1536 resolution (that’s four times the number of pixels in iPad 2 and a million more than an 1080P HDTV) and 44 percent greater color saturation, yields amazingly detailed and sharp images. Featuring a 5 MP iSight camera with a backside illumination sensor, this Apple iPad will delight you with its exceptionally rich photos and the ability to take 1080p HD videos. The built-in Apple A5X chip with quad-core graphics powers the 3.1 million pixels contained in the 9.7-inch display and generates an unfaltering response for all sorts of operations on this Apple iPad. Your voice will be its command - the Dictation feature in the 3rd Generation Apple iPad types as you speak, be it e-mails or status updates on social networking sites. What’s more, the AirPlay feature in The new iPad lets you wirelessly stream your favorite stuff to your speakers or an HDTV.

Smartphone and computer giant has made $112m offer, reports suggest
Apple is poised to take control of Loewe AG, a publicly-listed manufacturer of large-screen LCD TVs priced above EUR 1,500.
It is speculated that Apple will assume control of the company as part of a wider plan to extend its dominance into the TV business. The offer on the table is believed to be about $112 million.
Apple already has significant market shares in MP3 Players, mobile phones and tablet computers. It has been speculated for months that the company will develop a full-size television that adheres to Apple’s recognisable design and software principals.
In a manner that echoes Apple’s abject policy on media handling, Loewe AG representatives cut off phone calls on several separate occasions when approached by Develop.
The company is expected to announce its equity sale to Apple by Friday.

Hand firmly grasping hat? Good. The Wall Street Journal is reporting on quite the bombshell today, noting that Google is about to cause its carrier partners in the States all sorts of grief -- indirectly, of course. Just weeks after placing its heralded Galaxy Nexus on sale for $399 unlocked, the report states that said move is only the beginning of a new initiative. Likely to be formally revealed at Google I/O, the mega-corp is planning to partner with a variety of OEMs (rather than just one at a time) in order to have up to five Pure Google (read: Nexus) devices available at once. Better still, the whole stable will ship with Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean) and will be sold directly from Google in unlocked form to consumers in America, Europe and Asia.
The move is significant in a myriad ways. For one, more unlocked Nexus devices means more choice when it comes to carrier selection. Furthermore, the move is likely to quell fears that certain partners may have about Google making Motorola Mobility its favorite after a $12 billion acquisition. Not surprisingly, Google's not commenting on the matter, but sources "close" to the situation say that the company's hoping to have the 5.0 cadre on sale by Thanksgiving -- you know, just in time for Black Friday and the looming holiday shopping season. We're all guessing that this will address the growing "app situation" head-on; by making a push to eliminate carrier-infused bloatware (while also providing early Android OS access to more partners), we're hoping that the whole "skinning" dilemma is addressed, too.

Developers will be able to build voice features into apps using the Google platform.
Twilio currently offers its API for iOS and the web, and claims to have 90,000 registered developer accounts.
Now, its Android APIs will let let developers incorporate VoIP features directly into apps without the need to launch any discrete services.
Other features in the SDK include real-time presence and app backgrounding so that users can receive voice calls even if the app is not being used.
Twilio is hoping that embracing Android will kickstart all manner of new cross-platform voice services via apps.
Thomas Schiavone, director of product management for Twilio, said: “With this many developers and our proven success on iOS, we know we’ll see some incredible and innovative cross-platform communication apps in the months to come.”

Infographic demonstrates the effect the tech will have on the app space.
Analyst IDC has released an infographic on HTML5 that says one billion mobile web browsers will be compatible with the tech next year.
Meanwhile, HTML5 web developers will hit two million as 79 per cent of mobile app developers look to use the platform this year.
This will push more than 80 per cent of mobile apps to incorporate the tech by 2015.
The Financial Times has been a key mover in the space, launching a HTML5 web app after become enraged by Apple's App Store charges, which now has two million users.

Google is set to alter the market strategy for the Android operating system according to a Wall Street Journal report, providing early access to the latest Android OS builds to more handset makers.
Traditionally Google has partnered with one handset manufacturer (and one type of SoC processor) for each generation of Google-branded 'Nexus' phone. The scheme is intended to provide a benchmark reference Android phone that grounds third-party versions and hopefully avoids extensive delays in upgrades and excessive mobile operator meddling with OS features.Arguably that hasn't worked out too well with massive delays in Android OS upgrades still plaguing many of the world's smartphones, even those sold as recently as last year. The Journal claims that Google is set to provide early code to many more manufacturers.
Google will now work with up to five handset makers, suggesting a raft of Nexus-branded phones rather than one 'hero' device. In addition the devices are going to be sold directly by Google, off contract. The initiative is also aimed at reviving the flagging fortunes of Android tablets which have so far failed to make much of an impact against the rampaging sales of Apple's iPad.
Google is gambling that there's a good deal of punters that will fork out hundreds extra to buy unlocked, off-contract devices. That seems a reasonable bet for tablets, since much of the market isn't convinced by cellular data-equipped tablets with their monthly charges. However it remains to be seen if it will make much of an impact in the smartphone market where most customers buy phones for very little up front in order at the expensive of being locked into contracts.
Even if most punters continue to buy phones from the carriers, Google's Nexus-branded phones have been fairly popular handsets sold by the carriers anyway. With more devices, more differentiation will be possible - raising the possibility of a Nexus-branded phone that might actually fit in the hand of the fairer sex, for example, or dare-we-say it, a Nexus phone with a battery good for more than a day?
Google is widely expected to launch at least one Nexus-branded Android tablet at the internet giant's Google IO conference in San Francisco at the end of June.
Rumours of Nexus tablets have been fairly thick on the ground with the most frequent one suggesting that a budget 7-inch Asus-made Android 4.0 tablet could cost as little as US$200 to $250. More recently another tablet has come to light based on notes in recent check-ins to the open source Android OS.
The Samsung tablet would be based on a new Exynos 5250 SoC with the latest A15 ARM CPUs and a faster Mali T-604 graphics part. These specifications hint at a high-performance Android tablet that might be seen as a more direct competitor to the iPad.
So perhaps Google IO will be the launch point for Google's multiple-Nexus strategy with a cheap 7-inch tablet made by Asus and a beefier, larger model made by Samsung? We'll have to see.

CWmike writes with news of a significant change in Google's strategy for Android. According to a Wall Street Journal report, "Google plans to give multiple mobile-device makers early access to new releases of Android and to sell those devices directly to consumers, said people familiar with the matter. That is a shift from Google's previous practice, when it joined with only one hardware maker at a time to produce 'lead devices,' before releasing the software to other device makers. Those lead devices were then sold to consumers through wireless carriers or retailers." JR Raphael adds, "Signs of something big have been brewing in AndroidLand for some time now: First, we've had the increasingly loud buzz about Google's top-secret mission to build an inexpensive Nexus-like tablet. Then, last month, Google opened the door to selling unlocked Nexus devices directly to consumers, eliminating the need for carrier meddling and contract commitments. Now, at long last, we're getting a glimpse at what's likely the final piece of the puzzle

[Rob Morris] has been hard at working improving his guitar augmentation techniques. Here he’s demonstrating . This builds on the work he shared a few years ago where he strapped a Wii remote to the body of his ax.
Just like the Wii remote, the iPhone includes an accelerometer. As you would expect the best parts of the older hack made it into this one, but the inclusion of the touch screen adds a lot more. In the clip after the break he starts by showing off the screen controlling a whammy bar functionality. But we really love the octave offset feature that comes next. This kind of sound manipulation simply can’t be done using a purely physical method (like the whammy bar can). But he’s not done yet. The demo finishes with a Theremin feature. You’ll notice he plucks a string but no sound comes out until he starts touching the screen. This turns it into an entirely different type of instrument.
The only info we have about putting this together is the list of packages he’s using: TouchOSC, Max/Msp, and GuitarRig

The creator of Dragon Shout, a free iOS app containing a hand-drawn map for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has been sent a copyright infringement notice by ZeniMax Media, parent company of publisher Bethesda.
The move follows ZeniMax's threat of legal action against Mojang, developer of Minecraft, last year. Touch Arcade reports that the app creator, known only as Blalock, has not been ordered by Apple to remove his work from the App Store because "ZeniMax didn't specify what the app is specifically violating.
"I did my best to ensure the app was not violating anything," he said. "I looked up US trademarks and copyrights for 'Dragon Shout' and at the time there [weren't] any. I had the map hand-drawn.
"I intentionally didn't use any graphics or wording that would possibly be owned by Bethesda. So, I'm still not sure what they say the app violates."
It sounds harsh, but ZeniMax is known for protecting its brands. Its chief complaint against Mojang's upcoming card game, Scrolls, was that customers would confuse it with The Elder Scrolls, and given that Dragon Shout is solely focused on Skyrim, the same logic could be applied: users might naturally assume that the app is the work of the game's creators. It should be noted, too, that the app's full title is given on iTunes as Dragon Shout For Skyrim, drawing a clear line between it and Bethesda's sprawling RPG.
Last month ZeniMax filed a number of trademarks in a bid to shore up its ownership of Skryim's signature dragon shout, 'Fus Ro Dah', presumably with the intent of cracking down on the array of unofficial Skyrim merchandise available on the internet, much of which riffs on the phrase.

It's seldom the case that we get to look at world smartphone market share on a national level, but Kantar WorldPanel has given a rare peek that might give Windows Phone fans some good news to crow about. Even though things haven't always gone well for the Microsoft camp, Nokia phones like the Lumia 800sparked a minor Renaissance in some countries in the three months leading up to mid-April: Windows Phone was up to between three and four percent in France, Italy, the UK and the US. The Metro interface must also be sehr gut for Germans, which nearly doubled Windows Phone's local share to six percent in that short space of time.
Kantar is eager to point out that it's still mostly a tale of Android and iOS successes, though. Google took extra ground in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US, while Apple was on a tear both on its native soil and in the UK. HTC's upbeat predictions may have played a significant part in Android's continued rise -- the One X cracked the British top 10 list despite having only been in shops for a few days. About the only underdog story not going well in early spring was RIM's, where the BlackBerry's share of the US was cut to a third of its year-ago glory at three percent.

Broadcasters resolve legal differences for the sake of Jersey Shore fans.
Viacom – parent network of MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon – and Time Warner Cable have ended their ongoing lawsuits, which begun over a year ago.
The differences arose when TWC planned to introduce Viacom TV shows to subscribers via its iPad app to allow streaming on the move, similar to the UK's Sky Go service.
Now, the broadcasters have released a joint statement to say: "All of Viacom’s programming will now be available to Time Warner Cable subscribers for in-home viewing via internet protocol-enabled devices such as iPads."
Additionally, the pair claim to have resolved other issues to their mutual satisfaction.

Ten times the current amount. Should put a strain on central London's 2.5 networks.
New stats from Informa Telecoms & Media estimates the value of the whole mobile biz will go from from $325.8 billion to $627.5 billion between 2011 and 2016. There will be a rise of 23 per cent in phone ownership overall.
And its data that's driving the rise, with traffic up from 3.89 trillion megabytes to 39.75 trillion megabytes.
The main uses of data will be web, P2P messaging and apps. Video streaming will consume one third of all bandwidth but only deliver one per cent of revs. Bit worrying.
Average users will consume 6.5 times as much video, over eight times as much music and social media, and nearly ten times as many games as in 2011.
Informa reckons the average number of text messages sent in a month will go from 118 now to 146 in four years.

Now that iPhone 4Ss are in the hands of Apple fans across the globe, speculation has turned to what we can expect from the iPhone 5.
Both The Wall Street Journal and Reuters are reporting that Apple plans to use a larger screen on the next model of the popular smartphone.
Sources are claiming that the new screens will be four inches diagonally, compared to 3.5-inches now.
The firm is likely responding to competition that may not have quite the market presence of Apple, but do have significantly bigger screens – such as Samsung’s Galaxy line. Whilst many are waiting to see when Apple will lose its grip on the market, this move shows it is not complacent about current successes.
LG Display Co Ltd, Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc are likely to produce the new screens, and rumours suggest the next iPhone could begin production as soon as this summer.

A poll of 30 banks and brokerages by Reuters revealed the cost of Nokia's debt rising, and that the firm is tearing through reserves at a rate that will wipe out its 4.9 billion euros reserves in a couple years.
Nokia has two bond issues outstanding: 1.25 billion euros of 5.5 per cent bonds maturing in 2014 and 500 million of 6.75 percent notes due in 2019.
They're are both junk-rated by Fitch and Standard & Poor's.
The article reflects a mixed attitude to Nokia's fortunes, with some analysts maintaining its reserves are large enough to see it through, while others are spooked by its burn rate.
"In our opinion, the company's ability to repay even its shorter-term 2014 bond could be an issue," said Societe General credit analyst Juliano Torii.

The original Amazon's Kindle Fire was unveiled to great acclaim last Autumn and was widely hailed as the first viable competitor for iPad.
At first all looked good, with Q4 sales at an estimated 4.8m, but thenQ1 delivered just 700,000.
The tablet has still to be launched outside the US.
Now Reuters reports the Kindle Fire 2 is being readied for a Q4 launch in the US, and will sport an 8.9-inch screen, outmeasuring the original seven-inch Kindle Fire, while bringing it closer to the best-selling 9.7-inch iPad.

Apple has rebutted a legal complaint about its Siri personal assistant by telling the plaintiffs that they should have returned their phones.
An American customer, who alleges that the advertisements for the service are misleading and deceptive, filed a lawsuit in March this year.
The complaint says that the ads, which show people making appointments, finding restaurants, looking up points of social etiquette and finding text messages are “contrary to the actual operating results and performance of Siri.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, a motion to dismiss the case was filed by Apple’s attorneys, which reads:
“They offer only general descriptions of Apple’s advertisements, incomplete summaries of Apple’s website materials, and vague descriptions of their alleged – and highly individualized – disappointment with Siri. Tellingly, although Plaintiffs claim they became dissatisfied with Siri’s performance ‘soon after’ purchasing their iPhones, they made no attempt to avail themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty – which remains in effect.”

[Buddhra] wanted to use a set of ear buds that also had a controller built into the wire. The headset he chose to go with is meant for use with iPod, but he figured it should be possible to make it work with Android too. He was right, and managed to alter the controller for Android use and still fit it into the original case.
He had already made a custom control module that has fast forward and rewind features and play/pause events. The signals used for the controls are based on resistive dividers. The play/pause button on the iLuv headset already worked, so he cracked the controller open to see why the forward and back buttons didn’t work. It turns out all he needed to do was add the right resistors to those buttons. Here you can almost see the 0603 surface mount packages he used to add a 220 Ohm resistor to the back button, and a 600 Ohm resistor to the forward switch.

"The malware business growing around Google Android — now the leading smartphone operating system — is still in its infancy. Today, many of the apps built to steal money from Android users originate from Russia and China, so criminal gangs there have become cyber-trailblazers. Sophos and Symantec on Wednesday released their latest Android malware discoveries written in Russian. While the language narrows the number of potential victims, the social-engineering tactics used to get Android users to install the malware is universal. The gang tracked by Sophos is using fake antivirus scanners, while Symantec is tracking cybercriminals using mobile websites to offer bogus versions of popular games. Sophos says the criminals are like other entrepreneurs launching startups. They're starting in Russia, but have far greater ambitions. 'I don't think we can say that they're necessarily using it as a testing ground — think of it more as a local business that as it grows may gain multinational ambitions,' Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said in an email interview on Wednesday. The cyber scam tracked by Sophos was reported this week by GFI Lab, which discovered links to the bogus antivirus software on Twitter. Sophos dug deeper and found that the .ru domains pointed to the same Internet protocol address hosted in Ukraine."

Unless you're lucky enough to live in Scandinavia, you'll have to wait till the end of summer to get yourCotton Candy fix. Aching to nab yourself a computer-on-a-stick before then? If you're willing to step down in specs, the Chinese-made MK802 could be the PC in your pocket. For $74 (versus $199 for the Cotton Candy), this 7-ounce device gives you a 1.5-GHz Allwinner A10 CPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and, like the Cotton Candy, Android 4.0. FXI's version, on the other hand, packs a dual-core 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos processor, and while the MK802 offers an HDMI port, the Cotton Candy includes an HDMI connector. The MK802 is slightly bulkier than its sweetly named competitor (3.5 inches vs. 3.1), but that Android logo on the front does wonders for its design cred. AliExpress.com is currently selling the MK802 with free shipping to the US -- click the source link for a gander.

After banning the word 'jailbreak' from its app store and music library, Apple [Friday] reversed course and again permits the term — slang for hacking into a device to download unauthorized content — to appear on iTunes and its App Store. On Thursday bloggers noticed Apple had censored the word, using the Thin Lizzy album 'Jailbreak' as an example. For awhile, the title was listed as 'J******k' in Apple's music library, at least its U.S. version. In other instances, digital content continued to bear the full name Jailbreak

Going by Microsoft's Greater China COO Michel van der Bel, the launch of Windows Phone in China is off to an auspicious start -- enough to give Apple the shakes. He claims that devices like the Nokia Lumia 800c have helped Windows Phone reach seven percent of the Chinese market, or just enough to get past the six points of the iPhone. We're waiting on hard data before we take van der Bel's word: the top smartphone makers worldwide aren't depending much or at all on Windows Phone, and the iPhone has athriving gray market in China that masks some of its real numbers. Having said this, we've seen signs of Windows Phone enjoying a bit of a surge even in an iOS- and Android-loving Europe, so we'll be watching to see if there's an uptick in the number of buyers saying ni hao to Microsoft in the near future.

There’s no question that Apple has their industrial design down pat; comparing a cell phone charger made by Blackberry or Motorola to the tiny 1-inch-cube Apple charger just underscores this fact. [Ken Shirriff] posted a great teardown of the Apple iPhone charger that goes through the hardware that makes this charger so impressive.
Like most cell phone chargers and power supplies these days, Apple’s charger is a switching power supply giving it a much better efficiency than a simple ‘transformer, rectifier, regulator’ linear power supply. Inside the charger, mains power is converted to DC, chopped up by a control IC, fed into a flyback transformer and converted into AC, and finally changed back into DC, and finally filtered and sent out through a USB port.
The quality of the charger is apparent; there’s really no way this small 1-inch cube could be made any smaller. In fact, if it weren’t for the microscopic 0402 SMD components, it’s doubtful this charger could be made at all.
Comparing the $30 iPhone charger of a cheap (and fake) iPhone charger, the budget charger still uses a flyback transformer but there are serious compromises of the safety and quality. The fake charger doesn’t use a power supply controller IC and replaces the four bridge diodes for a single diode to rectify the AC; a very efficient cost-cutting measure, but it does lead to a noisier power supply.
There’s also the issue of safety; on the Apple charger, there is a (relatively) huge physical separation of ~340 VDC and your phone. With the off-brand charger, these circuits are separated by less than a millimeter – not very safe, and certainly wouldn’t be UL approved.
It’s worth pointing out that [Ken] compares a similar $7 Samsung charger favorably to the $30 Apple charger. Both are functionally identical, but Apple also has their marketing down pat, to say the least.
Tip ‘o the hat to [George] for sending this in.
EDIT: In case a 1-inch cube wasn’t impressive enough, check out the euro version of the iPhone/iPad charger. It supplies 1A @ 5V, and isn’t much thicker than the USB port itself. Thanks [Andreas] for bringing this to our attention. If anyone wants to do a teardown of the euro version, send it in on the tip line.

Those dying to play Diablo 3 online don't need to sit by their PCs to see if the servers are up and running anymore. A Diablo 3 server-checking app, aptly named "Diablo 3 Server Checker," is now available for free (ad-supported) on Google Play for Android devices.
Developed by Eluamous, creator of other server-checking apps for games likeWorld of Warcraft, the app pulls status messages from US.Battle.net to view updates from Diablo 3 servers in the US, Europe, and Asia. The app also includes a widget for use on the home screen of Android devices.
The app is in obvious response to the recent server issues Blizzard has been dealing with.

When we first caught word of the gTar, it was a bit of a mystery, with an online presence amounting to little more than a low-res press shot, an enigmatic YouTube teaser and assorted specs coming out of South By Southwest and various investor sites. This week, however, brings TechCrunch Disrupt to town -- and Incident Technologies has braved some unseasonable New York City storms to come along for the ride. We managed to snag some time with the iPhone-docking instrument ahead of its debut on stage this afternoon.
Details are still a little scarce -- but here's what we know: the company is looking for a summer release for the educational instrument. In the meantime, Incident has thrown up a Kickstarter page, so you can get in on the action. A limited number of investors can get their hands on a unit for the low, low donation price of $350, once it goes into production. That's $100 off the estimated $450 retail price point -- not cheap, sure, but there are a couple of things to note here. First, we played with the gTar for a bit and we can say, definitively, that this isn't just some cheap, plasticky toy -- this feels like a real, amateur-level electric guitar. Also, for whatever it's worth, that price also includes a backpack carrying case -- so that's something, right?

Android and PlayStation Vita owners have felt the Music Unlimited love on their respective devices for quite some time now, but the Spotify / MOG / Rdio competitor has finally made its way to the App Store, bringing with it yet another option for streaming music on iOS. The free app appears to be optimized for iPhone and iPod touch (though it's also compatible with iPad), and will enable on-the-go jammin' with a $4-per-month Basic subscription over 3G, 4G or WiFi connections. You can pull in tunes from the millions of tracks in Sony's collection, or access songs on your PC using the Music Sync service. The app is currently only available in the New Zealand App Store, but it's expected to hit other Music Unlimited countries soon. For now, you can hit up the source link for the Kiwi App Store preview, or head over to the Music Unlimited site to sign up.

Ben Heck is always thinking up gadgets that make life easier, from completely hands-free luggage to asensor system for improved cycling safety. His latest mod is meant for those of us who have burnt Ramen a few too many times. His so-called Ben-Stur Remote Control Android app works with a pot-stirring device, freeing users to stray from the kitchen while their meal is cooking. The app works via Bluetooth, and the pot-stirrer consists of an actuator arm, a chip clip, a timing belt and, of course, a wooden spoon. Heck used a Google ADK and an Arduino Uno for the control mechanism that communicates between the app and the stirrer. In the tablet app, users can check their food's temperature and control the speed of the the spoon's stirring. If that whets your appetite, click the source link for more info -- and check out our Maker Faire interview with Mr. Heckendorn himself.

We've been twiddling our thumbs waiting patiently for the littlest of Sony's new-look smartphone lineup, the Xperia U, to arrive in earnest. It's a bit of a relief then to see the Android 2.3 phone go on sale atThree UK. You'll be getting what we saw back in Barcelona, including Sony's Timescape interface and the trick color light-up strip. We're guessing that most will see the cheap-as-chips price as the real selling point: the Xperia U costs Ł170 ($269) without a plan, and it's free as in beer on a two-year contract forŁ23 ($36) per month. O2, Orange and T-Mobile will expand UK carrier choices soon, but if you're looking for a fresh entry point into Android, Three can take care of you today.

Still rockin' Windows Phone 6.x? Time to check all your apps for updates one last time. Microsoft has issued a final reminder that, beginning today, the Marketplace for 6.x devices will no longer be available. This means you won't be able to browse, buy or download apps from your phone via the service. Everything you already have will, of course, work just fine, but if you needed to reinstall something -- now is the time to do it. Unless it's available direct from third party sites, in which case you'll have a little breathing space. Still, better safe than sorry.

Fruit Ninja might not really need updating – it's pretty feature-complete if there is fruit for you to slice, and you can slice it – but Halfbrick is adding content to the mobile game anyway in honor of its two-year anniversary. The new update will be live May 24.
Gutsu and Truffles join the cast (in other words, Sensei), bringing with them a shop where you can purchase powerups that add time, deflect bombs, or explode, in exchange for Starfruit, a new currency that you earn in-game.
Speaking of currency, Halfbrick is handing out the iPhone game at no cost right now on its anniversary website. The offer is limited, but we'd be surprised if this Starfruit update weren't leading into an optional microtransaction-based system like that in Jetpack Joyride.

Carphone Warehouse claims 'thousands' of customers reserved a device within 24 hours of its unveiling.
Last week, Samsung claimed nine million Galaxy S III pre-orders ahead of the release next week. It took the Galaxy S II five months to reach ten million sales.
Now, Europe's largest phone retailer Carphone Warehouse reckons demand for the S III has been off the charts, with thousands of customers handing their requests in to over 800 stores.
Graham Stapleton, chief commercial officer, Carphone Warehouse, said: "Pre-order demand for the new Galaxy S III has surpassed expectations since the handset was first unveiled two weeks ago. The first 24 hours alone saw thousands placing their pre-order at Carphone Warehouse.
"The Galaxy S III is without a doubt the fastest selling pre-order of 2012 so far. We're gearing up for an exceptionally busy launch day at the end of the month as the handset lands on shelves at our stores across the UK."
Pre-order customers can receive the device on May 29th, with general release taking place on the 30th.

Boys are among rising users, presumably texting girls that aren't replying.
Data from Pew Research shows the figure is up from 50 texts per day in 2009, while 75 per cent of all teens – between 12 and 17 – now text.
This spikes for 14-17 year olds that now sent around 100 messages per day in 2011, up from 60 in 2009, while boys send an average of 50 texts, up from 30, and African Americans increased from 60 to 80.
63 per cent of teens send text messages daily, compared to 39 per cent making calls, 35 per cent that meet face-to-face, 29 per cent messaging on social networks and 22 per cent using IMs. Email is the least popular means of communication with just six per cent.
The number of users making calls is declining, but 69 per cent of the heaviest texters – over 100 sent a day – also make calls everyday, compared to 43 per cent of light texters – those sending 0-20 texts per day.
Meanwhile, 23 per cent of 12-17 year-olds now own a smartphone, rising to 31 per cent for 14-17 year-olds.

Online sales of electrical goods grew by 26 per cent in April, boosted by the lauch of the iPad 3.
According to data from IMRG, cited by ERT Online, the sales were the strongest seen in 18 months with UK shoppers spending a total of Ł5.7 billion online.
The figures represent a ten per cent year-on-year increase, which fell short of predictions, but it was noted that last April also saw strong sales.
Along with this, mobile sales saw year-on-year growth of over 353 per cent, credited to the increase in the number of retailers offering mobile optimised websites.

Announced today and running on an 800 MHz VIA core, the 170 x 85mm 'APC' is expected to ship this July. It has 2GB of flash storage and 512MB of DDR3 memory. 'A modified version of Google Android 2.3 uses up most of that 2GB of flash storage, but there are external storage options. On the back I/O is a microSD slot, and of course you could hook in an external USB 2.0 drive. VIA spent a lot of time customizing Android to enable keyboard and mouse support which natively it does not support. ... On the I/O panel you get VGA output, HDMI output (up to 720p playback with hardware acceleration), four USB 2.0 ports, gigabit LAN and audio out and microphone in.' With a 'Neo ITX' form factor, VIA touts the single-board computer as a 'bicycle for your mind.

Ustwo's newest title has been accused of being a clone of Johann Sebastian Joust
Ustwo's latest game, Papa Quash, has been accused of being an iOS copy of the PlayStation Move title Johann Sebastian Joust, developed by Die Gute Fabrik. The original is a music-based Move title, where players attempt to move their opponent's Move controller out of the allowable threshold without doing so themselves. Papa Quash is the same style of play, but with players trying to knock an opponent's iPhone or iPod.
Ustwo marketing director Steve Bittan told Gamasutra that the studio developed the title for Sam Pepper, a former Big Brother UK contestant. He insisted that the title was not created in-house.
"Papa Quash was a concept from Sam Pepper. We made the app for Sam Pepper. It's his app. Not ours," Bittan told Gamasutra. "It's not an Ustwo app. It's a Sam Pepper app."
"Sam has a typical fan base. Young and into social media. We asked him to reach out to J. S. Joust and explain his concept which he did. We had assurance everything was ok," he continued. "We told him about J. S. Joust and he emailed them to OK it. After we got that assurance we did service work on it."
There game was launched through Ustwo's App Store account, but bittan says that's because of issue's with Pepper's account.
"He wanted to launch it and we had issues with his account so went with ours so he could reach out to his fans. He is a ex-Big Bro contestant in UK and has a big Twitter and YouTube following. We're in process of getting his account set up," Bittan said.
"We're not into cloning. We genuinely care about what we do and out reputation in the indie community. We're upset about how it's been perceived."
According to the blog Functional Autonomy, Sam Pepper backed up Bittan's claims when asked about the game on Facebook. Die Gute Fabrik has yet to make a full statement on the matter, but it has released a few messages on Twitter.
"Just to be clear, we have never and would never approve, give permission, or encourage anyone to clone of any of our games," said one tweet.
"Sorry for the delayed response, folks. We're working hard to formulate the right words. We'll do everything we can to comment [tomorrow]," they later added.

Having already made headway into the digital frontier last year, video game subscription service GameFly is now ready to expand its sphere of influence into the world of mobile. The company's aspiring for greatness, announcing this morning that it plans to begin publishing iOS and Android titles as early as this summer. And that's not all, folks: we can expect to see the GameFly GameStore, a gaming-oriented competitor to the Play Store and Amazon AppStore, sometime this fall. In addition to its goal of being the biggest and baddest kid on the block, GameFly intends to don the role of philanthropist, setting aside a fund to assist struggling devs who might just need a few extra bucks to finish the next mobile masterpiece. If you fall in this category, the company's already accepting submissions, so read through the press release below to get all the necessary details.

Google gave its official search app an iPad remake late last year, and now it's smaller iPhone and iPod touch devices getting the new UI's treatment. As of Google Search App 2.0, the smaller iOS devices see a big emphasis on full-screen navigation, with an automatic full-screen mode and a dedicated full-screen photo search making the most of the limited display real estate. You can now swipe back to search results like you could with the iPad, and it's overall much faster in the app to hop between different search types as well as web apps like Calendar or Gmail. There's still something in it for you if you've already been deep into the iPad port's interface, as the tablet and the iPhone alike can now save photos directly to the iOS camera roll. You'll need at least iOS 4.2 to live in Google's non-Android mobile universe, but those that measure up can leap in through the source link.

It's been a long, long time since Apple undertook a significant redesign of the iPod touch, which hasn't been looked at since 2010 and received just a splash of white last year. A possible front panel part leak we've just seen could overturn all that -- and hint at the 2012 iPhone's direction in the process. If we go by the claims of MacRumors' supplier friends, the media player would be growing up, but not out, with a taller 4.1-inch screen. We're skeptical, as the white part (black on the inside) seems almost too good to be true -- we haven't seen anything similar elsewhere in the unofficial parts market. Still, having heard murmurs of larger iPhone screens and knowing Apple's own tendency to base the iPod touch on whatever iPhone flavor is new this year, we could be looking at iPhones and iPods growing for the first time since 2007. There's also some as yet unconfirmed next-gen iPhone parts included by the source, although we'd hesitate to call them smoking guns unless they're put together in Apple-like form later in the year.

A hardcore 11 per cent play for more than two hours a day.
New stats from Lightspeed Research confirm the ongoing rise of the mobile as a games platform.
It reports that 36 per cent of 25-34 year olds, 29 per cent of 35-44 year olds, 18 per cent of 45-54 year olds and 14 per cent of 55-64 year olds say their smartphone is the device they game on most often.
Mind you, for all the mainstream popularity of mobile gaming, it's still the fixed console that's the most popular way to play, with 60 per cent playing these in the past six months.
The figure for smartphones is 47 per cent.
Meanwhile the data showed 52 per cent of respondents have tried social gaming and Facebook remains the dominant platform, particularly for women (49 per cent compared to men at 37 per cent ).

Yahoo has launched Axis, a search engine service featuring swipeable webpage previews rather than a page full of links.
Axis will be available on iPad and iPhone in the form of an app. It will also be available on web browsers via a plug-in and will have the ability to sync with iOS devices, meaning users can start a search on their iPad and carry on where they left off on their desktop.
Focusing on a more visual way to display content, Yahoo’s Axis enables users to swipe through previews when using a touch screen and also quickly access the information they need just from the auto-completed preview results.
The app is initially only available in the US, but will become available in the UK by the end of the year.

The Oakland Tribune reports that when Berkeley police Chief Michael Meehan's son's cell phone was stolen from a school locker in January, ten police officers were sent to track down the stolen iPhone, with some working overtime at taxpayer expense. 'If your cell phone was stolen or my cell phone was stolen, I don't think any officer would be investigating it,' says Michael Sherman, vice chairman of the Berkeley Police Review Commission, a city watchdog group. 'They have more important things to do. We have crime in the streets.' But the kicker is that even with all those cops swarming around, looking for an iPhone equipped with the Find My iPhone tracking software, police were not able to locate the phone. 'If 10 cops who know a neighborhood can't find an iPhone that's broadcasting its location, that shouldn't give you a lot of confidence in your own vigilante recovery of a stolen iProduct,' writes Alexis Madrigal. 'Just saying. Consider this a PSA: just buy a new phone

Some have called Microsoft's Facebook app for Windows Phone a red-headed stepchild to the Androidand iOS darlings, but it's making up for lost time in good fashion with a 2.5 update. Those who live a Metro life now get full Facebook conversation threads with group support, so they're not left out of the loop when a friend mentions the pub he wanted to visit two days ago. Along with this more conversational addition, it's now possible to tag a friend or a place in a post using plain "with" and "at" statements, and the seemingly inescapable Like button has reached comments for Windows Phone owners. There's more control over posts and active post links in the mix as well, so you'll find a surfeit of social mingling when you update at the Windows Phone Marketplace link below.

Marking a renewed push at newspaper and magazine publishers.
The move comes a year after Android first began offering in-app payments, which has since become a mainstay of the app publishing universe.
In fact, Google says 23 of the 24 top-grossing apps in Google Play use in-app billing, and the total revenue generated from in-app purchases exceeds revenue from traditional app purchases.
Now, developers can sell auto-renewing monthly or annual subs from inside of their apps. They just set the price and billing interval and Google Play manages the purchase transactions for them.
After the transaction, users are informed of new charges by email at each renewal, and they can visit My Apps in the Play Store app to view their accounts.
The obvious target here is journals and magazines, but entertainment providers can also take advantage to sell game levels, music tracks and so on.

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker said Android contributed 59 per cent and iOS 23 per cent of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped in 1Q12.
That's 82 per cent – a big rise on the combined share of 54.4 per cent they had in 1Q11. And miserable news for the once mighty RIM/Symbian and the wannabe WinPho.
Symbian slipped from 26.4m shipments to 10.4m, while RIM went from 13.9m to 9.6m. For all its efforts WinPho could only rise from 2.2m to 3.3m. Interestingly, at 3.5m, more Linux devices shipped than WinPho.
"The popularity of Android and iOS stems from a combination of factors that the competition has struggled to keep up with," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends program.
"Neither Android nor iOS were the first to market with some of these features, but the way they made the smartphone experience intuitive and seamless has quickly earned a massive following."

With Apple’s annual WWDC conference coming this June, there have been plenty of ideas flying around the internet as to what new features the iPhone 5 will have.
Here’s a round up of some of features that Apple fans are hoping for:
Bigger Screen – What with the increase in screen size from a number of Apple’s competitors, it seems everyone from The Daily Mail to Tech Crunch are pretty certain that the newest iPhone will feature a larger screen. Rumoured sizes range from 4-4.3 inches.
Apple A6 chip – There have been rumours of an A6 chip dating all the way back to 2011, could we be seeing it finally put into an iPhone this year?
NFC technology – Near Field Communication technology enables users to make payments via a scanner with their smartphone. There is already an Android device with NFC technology so surely Apple can’t be far behind.
Better camera – Nokia’s latest smartphone features a 12mp camera, a step up from the iPhone 4S’ 8mp. One rumour is that we could be in store for a 3D camera and display for Apple’s newest offering.
These are just a few ideas that we’ve come across, have you heard any that you think are likely to appear on the new device? If so let us know in the comments section below.

To skin or not to skin? That's hardly ever a question for Android OEMs. And, in the case of some Chinese manufacturers, that mark of software differentiation comes in the form of three dimensions. We've already seen Huawei trot out its (optional) 3D UX for the Ascend P line, and now it appears ZTE'sready to follow suit with a custom interface powered by Rightware. The Kanzi UI, as it's called, will come pre-loaded on all of the company's smartphones currently shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich, treating users to a 3D homescreen experience and giving developers a unified platform to port their designs. It's good news if you're a fan of that overlaid visual gimmickry, but we much prefer our Google desserts vanilla and without any toppings. Hit up the break to check out the official presser.

Have we finally found a tablet match for the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note? ViewSonic sent around a teaser for its "Touch and Connect" series prototypes, including a 22-inch "smart business tablet monitor," powered by what appears to be Ice Cream Sandwich. The giant touch-enabled device will be joined by a Windows 8 multi-touch display, new cloud computing solutions, high-end laser projectors and some interactive electronic billboards -- all set to make their debut on June 5th at Computex. More details will no-doubt be forthcoming in Taipei, so do stay tuned. And you may want to hold off on those giant tabletacquisitions in the meantime -- we have less than two weeks to wait for what could just be the largest mainstream tablet to date.

Absinthe's "so-easy-your-grandma-could-do-it" jailbreak tool just got an update to version 2.0, enabling support for a handful of Apple portables running iOS 5.1.1. Absinthe 2.0, which was developed by the "Jailbreak Dream Team" (Chronic-Dev and iPhone Dev) joins Redsn0w's tool, and will support all iPhone and iPad versions, with the exception of iPad2,4 -- the most recent iPad 2 variant, shipping with a 32nm A5 chip. The jailbreak tool can also be installed on iPod3,1 and 4,1 models. Assuming your iOS device is up and running with firmware 5.1.1, you can hit up the source link after the break to get your download on. AppleTV (second gen) users can get in on the fun too, with the latest version of Seas0npass for 5.0.1.

Android developers are all too familiar with not-so-hot emulator performance, so it's a relief that there's now an system image in a native x86 for testing. While you'll still likely want to test on ARM, the x86 image will both help ferret out bugs specific to Intel's architecture as well as provide a much faster experience debugging apps now that the ARM-to-Intel translation isn't needed on top of running a whole second operating system. It's not perfectly up to date, running on Android 4.0.3, but it's close enough that the environment will mimic much of what users see -- and a big help if you're jumping into writing specifically for Intel devices. If speed is of the essence, or you're not keen on importing a Lava Xolo X900, you just need to update the SDK Manager to start testing with an Intel-flavored green robot.

We've been jonesing for a more international look at smartphone market share for the start of 2012, andIDC is now more than willing to oblige. In case you'd thought Android's relentless march upwards was just an American fling, Google's OS has jumped from 36.1 percent of the world's share a year ago to exactly 59 percent in the first quarter of this year. That's nearly two thirds of all smartphones, folks. As we've seen in the past, Android is siphoning off legacy users looking for something fresher: Symbian and the BlackBerry have both lost more than half of their share in one year's time, while Linux (led mostly byBada) and Windows Mobile / Phone together lost small pieces of the pie despite raw shipment numbers going up. As for Apple? Even with all the heat in the kitchen, the iPhone's share grew to 23 percent, leading to a staggering 82 percent of smartphone buyers siding with either the Cupertino or Mountain View camps.

So you've decided that it's time to make a tablet part of your life, but a lack of star-spangled slabs has prompted you to defer the purchase. Malaysians now face no such dilemma, due in no small part to the 1Malasyia Pad -- the country's first branded tab. The 1Mpad will reportedly soon be marketed to students (1.4 million of them, in fact), but 5,000 of the 7-inch Gingerbread devices are now being offered up to deep-pocketed locals, priced online at a rather-ambitious 999 Malaysian ringgits (about $315). Manufactured by MalTechPro Sdn Bhd, the 1Mpad will be offered to students at a to-be-determined discounted rate, making it the first such device to be available using a student discount card. At its current high list price, the tablet doesn't appear to be a fantastic deal, shipping with 3G broadband and the 1Malaysia Messenger application, which will serve as an IM service of sorts for sending text, pictures, video and voice recording to other 1Mpad owners. Still, if you have the cash to spare for an early taste of what Malaysian students may some day be using to surf the web, you can hit up the source link after the break for a bit more info.

It looks like that clandestine photo of a Gamestop computer replete with entries for Android devices has proven to be accurate, at least as far as tablets are concerned. Rather than stocking Samsung products exclusively, however, 1,600 Gamestops now carry Android tablets from Acer, Asus and Samsung; specifically the Asus Transformer and Transformer Prime, the Acer Iconia (both 7 and 10.1 versions), and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Each tablet comes pre-loaded with "a hand-picked selection of free games, likeSonic CD and Riptide, the Kongregate Arcade gaming app and a free issue of Game Informer Digital," according to the PR available after the break. Naturally, trade-in credit can be applied towards the purchase of one of these devices. Find out if one of your several dozen local Gamestops is a member of that 1,600-store collective by entering your zip-code here, and don't forget to do your research before plopping down several hundred clams on an iPad alternative.

Mame4droid Reloaded v1.2 (MIPS test build) is released.
Mame4droid Reloaded v1.2 (MIPS test build) Changelog:
MAME4droid Reloaded 1.2.MIPS test build.

If the HTC Status' dedicated Facebook button fell shy of satisfying your obsessive social networking needs, sit tight: the house of Zuckerberg may be building a slab of tech just for you. According to theNew York Times Bits blog, those old Facebook phone rumors are making a comeback. A handful of Facebook employees and engineers familiar with the matter reportedly say that the firm is collecting former Apple engineers, specifically, ones that worked on the iPhone and iPad. Like Zuckerberg said, mobile is the company's top focus, and one employee says the man at the top is afraid of getting overlooked in a sea of apps. "Mark is worried that if he doesn't create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms." Facebook has focused on deep integration with other devices for some time, but a dedicated handset could take the freshly publiccompany in new directions. Reports suggest that the rumored device is still in its infancy, and there's no word on form factor or OS, of course. Up for some speculation? Check out the source link below for Bits' full take.

LG has unveiled a new smartphone, which the firm claims has the world’s first Full HD smartphone screen.
Featuring a display with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and a 440ppi pixel density, LG’s newest offering includes a display based on Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching technology. LG claims it’s this AH-IPS technology that provides high colour fidelity, wide viewing angles and rapid response speed.
“As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5-inch Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market,” commented Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and executive vice president of LG Display.
The introduction of Full HD will put the new smartphone ahead of the iPhone 4S in terms of pixel density, but with Apple looking set to announce the iPhone 5 at its WWDC conference in June, we wonder for how long.

The New York Times reports that Facebook has resumed its stealthy efforts to create a smartphone, apparently to assert its position in an Internet increasingly accessed via mobile devices, and to counter products and moves made by major competitors Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon. The Times reports that Mark Zuckerberg has gotten personally involved in the project, which has recently landed several iPhone/iPad engineers from Apple. Wired ran a similar story a month ago, reporting that Facebook has ramped up its "Buffy" code-named collaboration with HTCon a phone which will probably be Android-based, support HTML5 and include a large touchscreen and high-quality camera (for Instagram). Facebook won't confirm or deny these reports.http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/12/...n-a-smartphone

We're very used to Apple prototypes showing up on eBay. It's not often that we see unreleased iPads get the auction treatment, however, which makes a new listing that much more interesting. A 16GB WiFi version of the original iPad has popped up sporting a second dock connector on its side, a feature that we'd previously only spotted in Apple design patents. The advantage, of course, would be to keep the iPad powered and synced while it's playing a favorite movie in landscape mode. While we don't know how one aaps69 managed to get hands on the tablet, there's some clear signs that the seller didn't just carve an extra hole in the aluminum for kicks: the slate is running the familiar SwitchBoard tool that Apple uses for in-house diagnostics, and there's a raft of old and incomplete part details that suggest this particular iPad was never meant for store shelves. We'll likely never know why Apple left us in a land of solo dock connectors, but we'd take a peek at the source link before it's gone, as more recent Apple prototypes at auction tend to return to the source quickly.

973,086 iOS devices were jailbroken in a single weekend thanks to Absinthe 2.0, which was released on Friday. Chronic-Dev, one half of the Jailbreak Dream Team tweeted the announcement yesterday, adding that 211,401 of those freed were third-generation iPads. If you want to loosen your own Apple-branded handheld from the clutches of Cupertino's control, then the warranty-worrying software is still available -- with the promise that it's so easy, your grandma could do it.

We've see BBC iPlayer reach many devices over time, but it's been conspicuously absent on Windows Phone. Nokia has stepped into give us some relief, and it's now promising that a port of the TV catch-up service will be ready for your Lumia 800 "in weeks." Good news no doubt, although Nokia's encyclopedic knowledge of British TV streaming is also dashing hopes of using the Sky Go mobile app on Windows Phone anytime soon: the same Nokia rep doesn't see Sky being ready for a "good few months" at the earliest. As such, you'll have no problems keeping up with Doctor Who and Sherlock when they're airing, but we wouldn't count on watching live football matches for awhile.
Update: Pocket-lint is reporting that it quizzed the BBC over this issue and got a firm denial about a Windows Phone version, which suggests that The Inquirer's report, or its Nokia source, may have made an illogical deduction.

Customers could have to wait as long as four weeks.
In the past two weeks, demand for the Samsung Galaxy S III has been incredible, with over nine million pre-orders – something the S and S II failed to achieve – while Carphone Warehouse called it 'the most pre-ordered phone of 2012'.
Now, Vodafone has told Pocket-lint that its customers may not receive the device for between two-four weeks, with the official launch penciled in for tomorrow – May 30th.
The S III comes in two colours, but eager beavers that pre-ordered the 32GB marble white and 16GB or 32GB pebble blue versions can expect the shipping delays, though the 16GB white model is expected to arrive on time.
A Vodafone spokesperson, said: "We’re working closely with Samsung to ensure devices reach our customers as soon as possible and will be contacting them directly to advise them on their order’s progress.
"The Galaxy SIII has already become the most pre-ordered device to join our line-up and we’re as keen as our customers are to get it into their hands as soon as possible."

15 per cent of all programme requests come from phones and tablets.
The Beeb's on-demand streaming service – BBC iPlayer – experienced a 94 per cent year-on-year increase via mobile phones and tablets in April 2012, while 15 per cent of all views came from the devices in the same month.
This has enabled iPlayer to become UK's top free iPad app of all time, while total programme requests average at approximately 190 million per month, up 24 per cent on 2011.
Connected devices – Smart TVs, game consoles, blu-ray players – are also pulling their weight, with use rising by 57 per cent year-on-year, accounting for 11 per cent of requests in April.

A flash survey of 968 people by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found 32 per cent of Brits would upgrade to a Facebook Smartphone if the device launches.
In all 73 per cent said the rumoured device was a ‘good idea’, and here are the reasons why:
1. Facebook chat accessibility – 62%
2. Cheaper alternative to an iPhone – 57%
3. Constant access to Facebook – 55%
4. Simple functionality – 49%
5. Keep up with new tech trends – 48%
One has to be a little dubious about the findings. After all users have had the chance to switch to Facebook-configured phones before - from INQ and HTC - and have never gone for it.
Also, loyalty to iPhone and Galaxy et al is pretty strong. Too strong, one would think, for widespread switching.

Apple has confirmed the keynote and talk schedule for this year’s WWDC, taking place in San Francisco between june 11th and 15th.
The keynote will take place on June 11th at 10am Pacific Time, and although Apple have not yet confirmed who will be speaking, it seems a safe bet to assume that it will be Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Apple are keeping tight-lipped about any new product launches obviously, but what we do know is that there will be six technical tracks and more than 100 sessions and labs, all exploring the latest technologies in iOS and OS X.
The conference tracks are as follows:
- Essentials
- App Services
- Developer Tools
- Graphics, Media and Games
- Safari and Web
- Core OS
Open hour labs will be available all day, every day for general questions, and will provide a chance to work one-to-one with Apple experts to get advice on everything from development to distribution.
This year’s event will also feature The Apple Design Awards, Lunchtime Speakers and the WWDC Bash, which will provide a chance to relax, eat food and ‘rock the night away’.
Apple are still taking submissions for the Apple Design Awards, you can submit your nomination here.
PCR will be reporting on the details of the WWDC event in June.

A prototype iPad with two docks sold on eBay last night for for $10,200 (or approximately Ł6,500).
It was a first generation, 16GB device, which saw 23 bids in the run up to the auction’s end (link here - warning, lots of hi-res images so it can be very slow to load).
The most interesting feature of the device are the two docks, apparently fully functional – one positioned so that users could dock iPads while in landscape mode. The eBay seller commented: “Apple prototyped these iPads to have this connector late in the process and at the last minute decided to remove them.”
The iPad also came with Apple’s software testing suite, Switchboard and was running the beta version of iOS 3.2.
The seller also noted that as prototypes like this are deliberately disabled, he had done his best to refurbish it, but had not been able to fix the touchscreen – that little fact didn’t seem to stop the bidding, however.

When it rains, it pours -- after a tiny drizzle of tall iPod touch leaks, we're suddenly faced with a deluge of photos of what might just be the next iPhone's back plating. If that's what we're looking at through photos supplied by a historically reliable uBreakiFix, talk of bigger iPhone screens might just pan out, as it looks decidedly taller than the iPhone 4S we use today. Apple may likewise be going all old-school iPhone on us, with a modern twist: we could be reverting to an aluminum back with more receptive materials (likely glass) at the ends, just in a much thinner form that keeps the steel antenna band. Perhaps the most intriguing bit is at the bottom, where rumors of a much smaller dock connector may have been validated along with a shift of place for the headphone jack. There's still a chance we're looking at an elaborate KIRF or an early engineering prototype that could change, but given that 9to5 Mac just got very similar images with black trim, there's a real possibility that we've just been given a sneak peek of what to expect from Apple later this year.
Update: A handful of extra photos have surfaced at 9to5 that show a bit of the front, as well as better views of the back. It's looking like the new model won't quite be as skinny as some photos suggest, and we're digging the different-hued, two-tone design a bit more now that it's not being subjected to Mr. Blurrycam. We've included the more choice shots in the gallery.

Scalado's latest 99 cent app for iOS only does one little thing, but it does it well. Its singular mission is to let you share an image from your Camera Roll to any web-connected display in front of you, without having to navigate through a more sophisticated file-sharing platform or use extra hardware on the receiving device. That recipient can be anything -- a smart TV, tablet, PC, Mac, games console, whatever -- so long as it has a browser pointed at the Photobeamer homepage. That page displays a QR code, which provides all the clever linkage you need: you simply load up the app on your mobile, pick the image you want to share, and then point the rear camera at the QR code to beam the image across via the web.
Having given it a quick test, we'd say it's definitely up to regular domestic challenges where you just want to display a few photos rather than perhaps videos or presentation slides, and where there's no need toprint or store shared images. You can swipe left and right between different pictures in your gallery, and also choose whether you want those images to be fitted to the recipient display or resized to fill it. There's a video after the break to help you decide if that's worth a dollar, while the Photobeamer app itself waits patiently at the iTunes link below.

Futulele has come a long way since we saw it in March; it's now on the App Store and has put on a lot of sheen in return for slipping past the original April release target. Along with a few more flowers to reinforce the Hawaiian vibe, Amidio's definitive ukelele app has since gained the requisite support for the new iPad's graphics and a fully automatic mode, just in case you're not yet a virtual Jake Shimabukuro. If your ambitions do involve playing for yourself, you still have access to the promised maximum 132 chords (12 per set) with the flexibility to adjust chorus, delay, EQ and reverb in addition to recording those plucky creations. We're still waiting on the Futulele Remote app (and matching case) to choose chords more like we would on the real deal, but you can do it all on the iPad for now if you're willing to spend a fiver at the App Store. A flower necklace and an impressionable young lover are optional.

The survey from comparison site GoodMobilePhones.co.uk shows app developers will need to work harder in order to secure consumer loyalty, as 63 per cent of Brits delete smartphone apps after one use.
Almost three-quarters have used apps just once, with gaming apps accounting for 61 per cent of apps that become neglected.
Meanwhile, 56 per cent use less than ten per cent of the apps on their device, while the average smartphone owner spends three hours per week using apps.
73 per cent use social networking apps Facebook and Twitter the most, with news apps securing 69 per cent popularity, though just seven per cent regularly revisit novelty apps.
Word of mouth and cost were contributing factors for downloading a new app, influencing 48 per cent and 32 per cent respectively.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has poured cold water on continuing rumours that the company is plotting an entry into the console gaming market, saying he is "not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming."
Speaking during the D: All Things Digital conference, Cook was asked if, following Apple's huge role in the rapid growth of mobile gaming, he wanted the company to repeat that success on big living-room screens.
"I view that we are in gaming now in a fairly big way," Cook said in response. "One of the reasons people buy an iPod Touch is gaming [but] I realise that is not the big screen you are talking about. Most people play on portable devices. Where we might go in the future, we'll see. Customers love games.
"I'm not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today, and things in the future will only make that bigger."
Cook chose his words carefully, of course, and clearly left the door open for expansion into the living room in future. Given his responses to other questions - where he was far less equivocal, either giving a full, honest answer or batting the question away without comment - it's easy to infer that Apple is, at the very least, contemplating taking on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo head-on.
Yet it would only do so on its own terms. It's hard to see Apple launching a loss-making games console, running around doing exclusivity deals with big developers and publishers as Microsoft did to forcibly gain a foothold in the market. Any move into big-screen gaming appears some way off, with the rumour currently focused on Apple entering the TV market - though an Apple TV, with an integrated App Store, would provide the company with a stealth route into living room gaming.

The first plausible pictures of what will likely be called the iPhone 5 have appeared online.
9To5Mac claims to have obtained the snaps from smartphone repair company uBreakiFix.
The main star is the larger screen that stretches from one side of the device to the other without a border. The rear case is also redesigned and is now constructed of both metal and glass.
Also note the new dock connector and, for the first time, a headphone jack mounted on the underside of the device. This, of course, means that any existing iPhone docking device will be incompatible.
BGR adds that “it’s entirely possible these parts are for a non-final version of the handset, but they do perfectly match up with what has been reported about the new iPhone”.

Oh, we know you've been waiting for this one. Earlier today, Archos announced its kid-friendly Child Pad tablet is finally up for grabs -- which was bound to happen after having passed the FCC's meticulous inspection. In case your brain needs a quick refresh, those $129.99 get your little ones a 7-inch, 800 x 480 screen, Android 4.0, an unpretentious 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of built-in storage (expandable by way of microSD). Obviously, kids are unlikely to focus on the specs side of things, so Archos has done a decent job of including pre-loaded tidbits such as apps, games and "exclusive" Alvin and the Chipmunk 3 content in order to keep them entertained. If you're feeling like this is the one for your child, then hit the source link below to get your order in.

Norwegian browser firm Opera has expanded its mobile web offerings again, this time with the release of the Opera Mini 7 browser for feature phones, which sports a social dashboard dubbed the 'Smart Page'.
The Smart Page summarises updates from the user's Facebook and Twitter feeds, as well as news site recommendations, while users can also add the feeds of their most-viewed sites.
Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software, said: "I’ve spent hours typing web addresses on my mobile phone, but now there’s a super smart way to get most of your content at a glance.
"With Smart Page, you just open the browser, and the content is right beside your Speed Dial shortcuts in the start screen for you to skim through — super practical, super time-saving and super smart. I guess that’s why the product team called it Smart Page."
While the Smart Page is the flagship side of the browser, Mini 7 users can also perform more conventional tasks such as actual web browsing.

Four in ten continue to burn cash, claiming they can't be bothered to switch to more appropriate price plans.
Price comparison site uSwitch is behind the data, which says 17 million mobile phone users are throwing burning their cash by not making the most of their tariffs.
48 per cent of Brits use just 50 per cent of their monthly minute and text bundles, while a quarter use less than one-fifth of their texts each month and 20 per cent use less than one-fifth of their minutes.
40 per cent have never switched operators to achieve savings, and 41 per cent can't be bothered to make a switch, despite an average Ł11 monthly saving amounting to Ł273 over a two-year contract – fast becoming the UK norm.
Two-thirds say the switching process needs to be simplified, while a third claim networks deliberately make it confusing to try and leave, and 27 per cent say operators are too pushy to achieve customer retention.
46 per cent of users move networks to make a saving, while 23 per cent cite poor coverage and 17 per cent say poor customer service.

San Diego Android device will be pitched directly at the mid-range market, priced Ł199.
It's a pretty significant day for Intel, which has been trying to break into a mobile space dominated by ARM for many years.
The firm's Atom Z2460 processor is the key to this breakthrough. It's been specially designed for use in smartphones, and both Orange and Intel are at pains tp stress its advantages in terms of performance and - most importantly - battery life.
The San Diego, launched next week, features HD Voice, HD Video, 8MP camera with ‘burst’ capture mode, 4.03” capacitive display, A-GPS and Bluetooth 2.1.
It's been built by Asian OEM Gigabyte and continues Orange's commitment to own brand devices. Orange has certainly been the most successful of the UK operators in this regard, claiming around 20 per cent of its phones are now badged Orange.
In terms of UI, the San Diego is a pretty vanilla Android set-up, although it does come with pre-loaded Orange apps such as Orange Wednesdays....

Cricket Wireless, the prepaid subsidiary of Leap, has just announced the availability of the iPhone 4 and 4S on its network. When they go on sale June 22nd, a 16GB 4S will set you back $500, while an 8GB 4 clocks in at a slightly more affordable $400. Both are available with Cricket's $55 "unlimited" everything plan, which includes all you can eat talk, text, and data -- provided your idea of "unlimited" data falls within its fair usage policies (in this case, 2.3GB of data). Cricket is hardly alone among America's smaller carriers in offering the iPhone, C-Spire as well as a number of regional carriers all stock Apple's wares. What makes this offering unique, is that Cricket is the first completely prepaid carrier to sell the handset. So, if you want an iPhone, but don't want the contract or the post-paid, usage-based fees? Well then, Cricket might just be your new best friend. Check out the PR after the break and hit up the source for more info.

It's on Apple's iPhone and iPad, but this is the ITV Player, not the rumored iTV supposedly under development in Cupertino. After initially launching last summer (along with an Android version) offering streaming video on-demand, the UK channel's iOS app has been updated to version 2.0 to offer a live streaming feed of its two channels. Other than just ITV1 and ITV2 over WiFi or 3G, if there's a live event being broadcast that isn't on either, you'll still be able to tune in via the app. Other new features includeAirPlay Mirroring, easier switching between content, improved location detection (to determine what channels are available) and Retina Display quality graphics on the iPad. Unfortunately, The Digital Lifestyle points out catch-up access is still unavailable over 3G, but those with access should grab the new app from iTunes.

We've potentially seen a lot of the next iPhone's exterior; it may be the interior's time for a shakedown, as an unusually detailed rumor out of 9to5 Mac has claimed scads more about the processor and iOS 6. Going by the tips, the 2012 design would use an S5L8950X, a processor with unknown specs but likely a step ahead of what we've seen in the iPhone 4S (8940X) and new iPad (8945X). There would likewise be a new spin on the PowerVR SGX543 graphics from the iPad as well as 1GB of RAM -- which doesn't sound like much next to a 2GB Galaxy S III, but stands to produce a similar speed boost for a lightweight platform like iOS. As for iOS 6 itself, the software is supposedly using underlying code newer than recentOS X Mountain Lion builds and is dumping Google Maps, as some have claimed ever since iPhoto for iOS made that step in the spring. The new Maps app (possibly pictured here) is said to be rough, but the OS as a whole could be coming along so swimmingly that Apple might have no trouble shipping on time.
As always, we're skeptical when so much detail is in flux. The rumor still jives with much more tangible behavior from Apple, such as its experimentation with 32-nanometer processors and a tendency for Apple to refine the chip from the current year's iPad for the iPhone months later. We may know the accuracy soon enough: more leaks are promised in the next two weeks, including an "entirely new iOS app."
