A Nokia-sponsored blog has revealed that the next-gen N-Gage platform is set to launch this autumn, with two major publishers already committed to releasing a range of new titles.
"We expect EA Mobile and Gameloft to bring a number of top-selling, award winning titles to our platform between our launch in September and the end of 2007," a statement on the blog reads.
"They aren?t the only ones, as throughout the year we will continue to make exciting announcements of other leading publishers adding their titles to our games catalogue."
The news comes just days after reports emerged that Nokia has begun showcasing its new N-Gage technology at a secret meeting in Santa Monica. The technology will be used in a series of phones rather than a single dedicated handset.
According to Nokia's blog, the "biggest franchises and hottest mobile games" will be available to N-Gage users "by early 2008".

Now you can encase your iPod in a shell made of an old 45rpm records. Pick out your choice of 45 different sides from a variety of types of mostly very old music. Each one of the $38 cases is unique. Save that copy of "Revolution" by The Beatles for me. Definitely retro-cool.

Brace yourselves good people of New York, mother government is prepared to step in (again) and save you from yourselves. Senator Carl Kruger is reportedly set to introduce legislation that would ban the use of MP3 players, cellphones, and any other electronic device while crossing the street in New York City or other "big cities" in the state. The proposed ban follows two recent pedestrian deaths in Kruger's district where at least one is said to be the result of a person "listening to his iPod." We just gotta wonder: if police can't enforce jaywalking laws in NYC, how could they possibly enforce this?

I-play CEO David Gosen has predicted that the console gaming industry will be left with a "niche audience" to target as mobile gaming becomes ever more popular.
Speaking at the Casual Connect conference in Amsterday yesterday, Gosen quoted figures from Informa and Montgomery which state that mobile has five times the installed base of consoles.
He went on to observe that the number of mobile subscribers is forecast to reach 2.8 billion in 2008, and said mobile games sales are expected to double those of console titles within two years.
According to Gosen, the mobile industry must focus on "balancing the demands of the present with the promise of the future".
He went on to observe, "Its reach and multi-functionality positions mobile as the number one mass market entertainment device of the future, rendering console as a platform for a niche audience."
Gosen also said that casual games will drive growth in the mobile and online sectors as convergence of content becomes increasingly important.

Sorry everybody, we hate to be the bearers of bad news for you iPhone obsessives, but that iPhone FCC letter dating it at June 15th? It was a hoax. Our eagle-eyed friends over at Phone Scoop noted that the confidentiality agreement document is, in actuality, photoshopped. We looked into the original filing for that new Airport Extreme base station (FCC BCGA1143), which expired January 15th (days after the Airport device was announced), and is so far as we can tell they're wholly identical (save a bit of photo manipulation). That confidentiality agreement outlines a device for use on all the right frequencies for an 802.11a/b/g/n device (5180 - 5240MHz, 5190 - 5230MHz, 5745 - 5825MHz, 5755 - 5795MHz, 2412 - 2462MHz, 2422 - 2452MHz), too, so there's not a whole lot of doubt left. So, to everyone who thought they'd be getting their iPhone this June: sorry, we're all still in the dark on when Apple's going to launch.

Could Apple be getting ready to finally kick those hard drives to the curb and go with flash memory across its iPod lineup? At least one man seems to think so: Prudential Equity Group analyst Jesse Tortora, who compares the swap to Apple's move in 2005 from the 1-inch HDD iPod mini to the NAND flash iPod nano. "Flash memory is clearly more expensive on a $/GB basis than hard disk drives," he says. "However, the late 2005 Nano transition to flash provides a guide as to the point at which the previously mentioned non-cost advantages of flash memory outweigh the cost premium." Apple is in a position to bump its HDD capacities to 120GB thanks to recent advances in perpendicular recording, but while that's great for video capacity, the fact remains you can only get 5.5 hours of video playback out of one of the current models, making additional capacity seemingly a low priority. Tortora sees 32GB as being cost-feasible for later this year, but we'd be surprised to see Apple segment its market with low capacity flash-based video iPods and high capacity HDD-based video iPods, so perhaps they'll manage to swing a 64 gigger by then. Speaking of video iPods, Tortora also claims the next generation of iPods will include an iPhone-esque wide touchscreen, WiFi for Apple TV streaming, and GPS functionality -- something that's been hinted at in certain Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard rumors. Jesse Tortora's track record isn't the greatest, his calls on the iPhone were pretty well off the mark, but the move to flash he details sounds reasonable, and while WiFi and GPS in an iPod seems like a distant dream at the moment, we're sure we could make room in our heart for such functionality.

One of the biggest things keeping cell phone games from being anything more than a nice distraction while you're on the can at work is the fact that those button layouts flat-out suck for gaming. I once excitedly downloaded Mega Man to my V710 (note to self: get a new phone) only to discover it was basically unplayable and I had just tossed another $5 into the bottomless, ravenous maw of Verizon Wireless.
This concept design looks to make phones a little more game-friendly. By popping the center button out into an analogue joystick, it makes your phone much more capable at controlling games, if stopping substantially short of making it full-out game comfortable. Will we see this design on phones in the future? Who knows (it's tough to trust any design website with a .ru extension), but it certainly looks better than most phone's game controls out there now.

Someone has ported Open Transport Tycoon to the UIQ 3 range of phones:
Hi!
You can download a first release
here
http://anotherguest.k0.se/open_trans...eluxe_uiq3.zip
Min heap allocation is 9mb, read instructions.txt in the zip file.
I know that it might crash sometimes at startup, mostly if you have the music files there. Try to start again or reboot the phone to solve it.
This version is based on the Pocket PC version by http://www.esoftinteractive.com which is based on the RC3 0.50 version.
Visit www.openttd.org for more information about what Open Transport Tycood Deluxe is all about.
It also is based on ESDL by Hannu V. with platform improvements and bugfixes by me, and of course lib sdl.
Enjoy!

The legal hammer strikes unpredictably: that's the lesson to be learnt from the case of "iPod Monday," a weekly event at The Lift in Des Moines, Iowa where patrons bring brought along their iPods to play 15 minute playlists based around different themes. Unfortunately, the event's host and creator, Clint Curtis, is bringing the event to a close on its second anniversary (tomorrow) after receiving a cease and desist email from Apple. As the dispute is limited to Clint's use of the trademarked word "iPod," Clint could presumably have kept the event running under a different name. However, a quick read of his email correspondance with Apple reveals the reasoning for closing the event. As Clint points out, he sent several emails to Apple before starting the website and specifically asked for permission to use the term "iPod Monday," he's had visits by Apple employees, a mention on Apple.com, and has praise heaped upon him everytime he visits the local Apple Store, and he is also a loyal Apple customer and claims to have generated a lot of publicity for the company despite receiving no compensation. Unfortunately, that means nothing to Apple, who are still requesting that he cease using the name despite his pleadings. This all begs the question: why now? Why, after two years, many emails, and much publicity, is Apple cranking it up a gear? As is often the case with these kind of David and Goliath legal scenarios, Clint has only two possible choices: resign to his fate and accept the demands, or start a lengthly legal battle against a company he likes, for an event that probably isn't worth the financial cost to defend.

We really had no idea how many iPod-using readers would be so stoked to finally be able to add such a simple thing -- backgrounds -- to their portable audio player. A new hack that claims to add a background to your 1st or 2nd gen nano (at the expense of dropping it down to the 1.1.1 firmware) have added customizable backgrounds with modder software iPodWizard. As usual, we do not vouch for the use of this software and wish you the best of luck in not bricking your precious iPod.

Mitch Lasky, senior vice president of Electronic Arts Mobile, has revealed that the company is currently in negotiations to produce games for the new Apple iPhone.
The device was first unveiled at Macworld Expo last month, with Apple boss Steve Jobs predicting that it will "revolutionise" the mobile industry.
Measuring 11.6mm thick, the iPhone comes with a built-in 2-megapixel camera and can be used to download music and videos.
So far little has been revealed of any potential gaming capabilities, but at least one publisher is keen to get involved - EA has already produced five games for the iPod and now looks set to offer support for Apple's next product.
Speaking to Business Week, Lasky said, "We have been talking to Apple about games on [the iPhone].
"We see a lot of the technology that we've utilised on the iPod side being incorporated into the iPhone."
Lasky became president of EA Mobile last year when the company acquired Jamdat, where he was previously CEO. EA Mobile sales during 2006 totalled US$ 118 million (EUR 91 million) - accounting for 4 per cent of the publisher's overall revenue.
Other companies likely to take an interest in the iPhone's gaming capabilities include PopCap Games, which already produces casual titles for the iPod plus the web and Xbox 360.

Glu Mobile has signed a deal with Britsoft publisher Codemasters to bring more PC and console brands to mobile phones.
Hit franchises TOCA Race Driver, LMA Manager, Operation Flashpoint and Colin McRae Rally will all appear on handsets, following the two companies' recent toe-in-the-water deal which saw them partner on the release of Brian Lara International Cricket 2007.
"This relationship with Codemasters brings an exciting set of franchises to our growing portfolio," commented Kristian Segerstrale, managing director of EMEA at Glu.
The mobile publisher has already forged strong relationships with traditional videogame publishers to bring a string of hit brands to handsets including Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Monkey Ball, plus Bizarre Creations's Project Gotham Racing.
"As part of Codemasters? strategic drive across all platforms of digital entertainment, Glu's momentum in the market was key for us in creating this alliance," said Matt Davies, director of Codemasters mobile.
"As technology advances, Codemasters will focus its development expertise in embracing wireless as the functionality between formats to add to the overall gaming experience."
The first mobile title to be released under the new deal will be LMA Manager 2008, which is due out this Autumn.

It was essentially inevitible that Nintendo's Wiimote was destined to become a weapon of mass destruction, and while we've seen folks jailed and even killed over an iPod, even we're a bit hesitant to call the blunt object a "criminal tool." Still, that's precisely what a former Clay High School junior was purportedly using when he "hacked into school personnel and student files" and transferred sensitive information to his dubious Pod. After threatening to "open up a credit card in someone's name and ruin their credit," school officials began to investigate the situation, and were quite relieved when they discovered the breach before any of the data was used with ill intentions. Currently, no court date has been set for the youngster's criminal case, but considering all the grief being endured in order to keep those files from leaving school grounds, one just has to wonder what secrets could possibly be held in those potentially steamy "personnel files."

The collaboration of Electronic Arts and Apple on games for the iPod has been described as "a marriage made in heaven" by Javier Ferreira, vice president of publishing for EA Mobile.
The publisher has enjoyed success with titles such as Mahjong, Tetris and Mini Golf on the market-leading entertainment player, with future projects on the highly-anticipated iPhone expected to be announced shortly.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at 3GSM in Barcelona, Ferreira said, "As the iPhone comes to the mobile space it's an exciting opportunity for us. It's a marriage made in heaven.
"For us, fundamentally, we love new platforms, we love new ways of playing and new ways growing the market."
Although Ferreira would not disclose specific sales figures for EA games sold through iTunes, he did reveal that the titles have been a success - and confirmed that the two companies are working together on new projects.
"I'm not going to comment on the sales figures, but it's been tremendously exciting," he said. "We always welcome innovation on platforms - and the iPod is a very interesting platform from a gaming perspective."
"It's great news for us, we've worked with them and we'll continue to work with them," he added.
With EA's Mitch Lasky recently revealing the company is in talks to develop games for the iPhone, the publisher clearly sees another opportunity to expand its gaming reach. And although titles deemed 'casual' are only currently available for the iPod, it won't be long until some of EA's key brands appear on Apple's hardware.
"The more devices that people can play on, the better. You'll see people play The Sims on the Xbox, the PC, their iPod and then the mobile phone," Ferreira said.
"We don't see these platforms as competing against each other, we see them ultimately expanding and augmenting the gaming category – and as the market leader in the gaming space, that's fantastic news for us."

For those of you eagerly awaiting the result of the the iPhone trademark dispute today... well, you'll have to keep waiting. Cisco extended the time for Apple's response to its iPhone lawsuit until Wednesday, February 21st. In a statement released this morning, Cisco states that they are "fully committed to using the extra time to reach a mutually beneficial resolution." With these favored children of Silicon Valley separated by just a few miles drive, you'd think they could have hammered out an agreement over a few beers by now. But with the discussion dealing not only with trademark rights, but also with "interoperability," the settlement is likely to include more than just a one-off cash settlement.

Everything we've been told with regard to the iPhone's pricing structure has suggested that the 4GB would hit at $499 and the 8GB at $599, and that this would be an on-contract price -- expensive, yes, but likely still in the right range to keep sales brisk. New advertising allegedly leaked out of a consumer survey suggests that the 2-year contract price could come in a full two hundie lower, though: $299 for 4GB, $399 for 8GB. This would sorta jibe with a Cingular exec's comment regarding the availability of units to folks outside coverage areas at a contract-free price, but perhaps more importantly, it's fabulous news for folks who will be able to take advantage of a contract re-upping. Of course, this is all coming out of a survey -- perhaps gauging reaction to pricing -- so we need to wait for some more clarification from the powers that be before declaring our wallets a little less burdened come June.

Hudson Entertainment, the North American publishing arm for Hudson Soft, today announced that they are bringing the classic puzzle game Chew Man Fu to both the Wii Virtual Console and mobile phones. Both versions of the game remain true to the original, combining colorful graphics with clever gameplay, and are expected to launch within the next month.
In Chew Man Fu, players must roll 4 magic spheres onto tiles that match the each sphere’s respective color, while avoiding enemies, in order to complete each level. Each sphere has unique properties to discover, which add another element of puzzle solving to the game; for example, one ball is better at breaking walls than the others. It is up to the player to free the Egg Roll Kingdom from the curse of the evil wizard, Chew Man Fu!
"Chew Man Fu represents an era of gameplay during which Hudson established itself as a creator of fun games that were easy to pick up and play, and also appealed to a wide range of gamers," said John Greiner, president of Hudson Entertainment. "With such a fantastic catalog of games released over the last 30 years, Hudson is in a great position to bring back some of these classics to a whole new generation of gamers."

Sports Interactive has managed to squeeze the pub-classic, Football Manager Quiz, onto mobile phones, and is rolling it out across major networks now.
It's a mass market venture for the previously PC and Xbox 360 restricted developer, something to help ease new users into to the world of football simulation.
The aim of the game is to score a goal by answering a string of correct questions, which advances you towards the opponents penalty area on a grid-like pitch. Get a question wrong and the opposing team will gain posession, keep answering correctly and you'll score. Simple.
All the top teams from Europe are included, and you can play through League, Quickfire and Quizzmaster modes. There are over 1,000 questions for each top Euro championship, so you shouldn't run out of trivia any time soon.
"FM Quiz was too much fun to just have it restricted to being played on a pub quiz machine, hence the move to mobile," Miles Jacobson, managing director of Sports Interactive told Eurogamer. "It's our first mobile phone release, and we're really happy with the results - it's just plain old fun!"
Perhaps this will lay the foundations for a fully-fledged Football Manager Mobile title. We can but hope.

Customers in Finland are already testing Nokia's next-gen mobile gaming technology in a live pilot running until mid-March.
Communications specialist and Nokia partner Elisa Corporation is combining its technology with the new N-Gage platform in a live trial to test quality, access to games and performance.
"The core of the Nokia games strategy is to make it easy for people to find, buy and play great quality mobile games and we're excited to expand our relationship with Elisa to help make this possible," commented Jaako Kaidesoja, director of games at Nokia.
"This pilot will help us to further refine the N-Gage experience for our commercial launch later this year," he added.
Nokia is expected to officially unveil the new platform at GDC next week, with the intention to launch in the second half of 2007.
"Our goal is to give our customers a new and unique experience they cannot get anywhere else," said Mikko Mattinen, head of consumer products at Elisa.
"People who enjoy mobile games are often the same customers who enjoy experimenting with new mobile services and content. Elisa can provide a wide range of content and services to meet their needs."
