J&R is taking pre-orders on another iPod Nano protection scheme. Instead of a case they are offering Nano’s custom painted with X2 scratch resistant liquid plastic coating. The iPods are cleaned, painted and cured under UV light to apply the coatings which come in six different color combinations. The process adds about $65 to the price of the Nano, so it comes close to what a normal case might cost.

iKey lets you skip a step or two if you want to transform analog audio onto wav or MP3 files, a convenient way to turn vinyl into digital. Plug in your left and right channel on one side, and plug in your iPod or USB key into the other, and this little box changes analog into digital without a lot of effort. Save your files in your choice 128, 192 or 256kbps bit rates on MP3, or go with uncompressed .wav files. All those old records better be worth it, though, because this little box costs $230.

Urban riders listen to music instead of the traffic sounds around them at their own peril, but if you ride somewhere safe like paths or tracks maybe you’ll be interested in the iBikeMount, which lets you attach your iPod Nano to your bike’s handlebars. It’s a little pricey for what it is at $29.99, but you can use it on exercise bikes, baby strollers and even lawnmowers if you want to.

If you’re looking for an iPod charging dock and speaker system that won’t break the bank, these iDocker iPod Speakers are only $29.90 and come with a remote control. We can’t imagine the sound quality is going to be spectacular, but if the price is right, hey. It’s not like they could possibly sound worse than speakers made out of cardboard, right?

Is there a Bluetooth-equipped iPod on the way? UK girls'n'gadgets magazine Stuff certainly thinks so, based on a conversation it's had with an unnamed British retailer. If Apple's telling retailers to prepare for such a product, it can't be far off launching the thing.
CEO Steve Jobs has, of course, been sceptical about such a device, claiming it adds one more battery - the one in the headphones - users have to remember to keep charged. Then again, he's expressed scepticism about not only Flash-based music players but also devices that play video too, and Apple has nonetheless released iPods with Flash and with video playback.
What's made a Bluetooth iPod likely is iPod chip maker PortalPlayer's announcement it plans to integrate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi circuitry into its media processors, as Reg Hardware was first to reveal, in February. The move comes courtesy of a tie-in with UK-based Bluetooth chip design pioneer CSR, aka Cambridge Silicon Radio.
A variety of accessory manufacturers already offer Bluetooth stereo audio add-ons for the iPod and other MP3 players, though all of them require a transmitter that clips onto the music machine. Bluetooth 1.2's A2DP extension handles the transmission of stereo data across the ether.
The downside is you need bulky headphones that incorporate their own battery. That's fine if you like that kind of thing, but less satisfy for listeners who prefer compact, lightweight earphones. We hope Apple doesn't cut costs by dropping the 3.5mm earphone socket.
Of course, Stuff's retail source could simply have his wires crossed, and be thinking of one of the many Bluetooth iPod accessories coming to market. We shall see..

Former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson is facing grand theft charges after Los Angeles detectives concluded that three of his luxury cars actually belong to British financial institutions.
According to the LA Times, police raided Eriksson's Bel-Air mansion on Friday night and conducted a six hour search of the property. Eriksson was later taken into custody, and his USD 1 million black Enzo was confiscated.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told the LA Times that detectives believe the car belongs to UK banks, as did Eriksson's red Enzo, which was destroyed in a crash on a Pacific highway in February, and his Mercedes SLR McLaren -which was seized last month after his wife was caught driving without a license.
Eriksson purchased all three cars in the UK, and brought them with him on moving to LA. But Whitmore said that two financial institutions claim they hold the titles to the cars, and that payments have lapsed.
"This is the beginning of the investigation," Whitmore said. "All three cars have now been confiscated."
Eriksson is being held without bail at the request of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A little info tidbit may have leaked out in an electronics market in India, where a couple of bloggers spotted a large sign calling attention to 5GB and 10GB iPod nano models.
Noticing an Apple Authorized Reseller sticker in the window, the two heard from the store’s proprietors, telling them the two larger-capacity nanos were expected by the end of May. It could happen.

Companies that develop inflight entertainment (IFE) systems for airlines have been in discussions with Apple about integrating the iPod and iTunes into IFE systems, according to several of the companies. Proposed applications include seatback-based iPod docks with USB and charging ports, allowing passengers to charge song and video purchases to frequent-flyer miles, and adding other ecommerce applications. "Our interests are wider – not just Apple, but enabling any e-commerce on the aircraft. Music is one thing in that category we are working on," said an exec with Panasonic Avionics. However, numerous obstacles stand in the way of inflight downloads, including changing Apple's licensing, so that songs downloaded directly to an iPod in the air could later be copied back to a customer's hard drive, and the issue of licensing and payment while a plane is in international airspace. Then, there's the issue of getting Apple to participate in the first place. When asked for a comment by editors at Flight International, the company issued what has to be one of our favorite "no comment" lines, especially for a technology company: "Apple never talks about the future." We'll keep that in mind.

Apple has reportedly run into trouble with its upcoming video iPod, where it can’t seem to get the display and touchscreen interface to work properly, according to Think Secret. The Apple rumors website reported that Apple had hoped to deliver the new video iPod in April, but sources said Apple engineers decided to redesign a balky touchscreen on the iPod, which allegedly includes a wide screen display spanning across the width of the device and uses a virtual trackwheel.
Think Secret also asserted that Apple may have foreseen technical problems with the new video iPod in February, and that might be the reason why it hasn’t aggressively pursued rights deals with Hollywood studios for full-length movie downloads. We think Apple also might be waiting to see what happens with other movie download sites before it jumps in to the movie downloading fray.

Hard drives can melt down. Computers can be stolen. Music folders can be deleted by mistake. Whenever the only copy of your music exists on your iPod, you need a way to get that music off there and on to another computer. Otherwise, that iPod will be stuck with the music it has on there, and you'll never be able to add another song or playlist--unless you want to reformat the iPod within iTunes and lose all your music. Fortunately, there's another way to go. It won't cost you a dime, and it requires no software.
There are a few things to know before you get started. First, this works only for Mac iPods (or iPods that normally sync with an OS X Mac). Windows users should use this tutorial instead. Second, if you use this to transfer songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store, the computer you're copying to will need to have the same account on it in order to play those protected songs. Third, when using the information below, you should probably keep in mind the warning that Apple affixed to the iPod ("Don't steal music").
Follow these simple steps
1 Enable your iPod for use as an external drive.
In order for your computer to see the iPod's folders, where the music resides, you will need to enable it for use as an external disk drive. To do this, connect it to the computer you normally sync it to and wait for iTunes to start up. Then Ctrl-click your iPod in the left-hand menu pane and select iPod Options. You'll start out in the Music section, which is right where you want to be. Near the bottom of the screen, check the Enable Disk Use box if it isn't already.
2 Connect the iPod to the destination computer.
Using either a FireWire or USB cable (the white one that came with your iPod), connect the iPod to the computer in which you're trying to copy the music. If iTunes comes up, ignore it without clicking anything; we're going to use OS X itself to copy the music.
3 Run the Terminal application.
Open a new Finder window (double-click the hard drive icon or go to File > New Finder Window), then select Applications. Find Terminal.app. It may be located in the Utilities folder. Once you find it, double-click the Terminal application to fire it up. A window will pop up.
4 Tell OS X to view hidden files.
Type or paste this exact text into the Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Press Enter, then type:
killall Finder
Press Enter and do not close the Terminal window.
5 Find the Music folder.
You should see your iPod on the desktop--an iPod icon with your iPod's name under it. Double-click it to open it, then double-click the iPod Control folder. Within that, you'll see the Music folder.
6 Copy the music.
Drag the Music folder on to your desktop to copy the music. When it's done copying, rename the new desktop folder Transferred iPod Music or something easy for you to recognize, then drag it off the desktop and on to your hard drive.
7 Add the music to iTunes.
In iTunes, select iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Make sure the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" boxes are checked. Click OK. Leave iTunes open. In Finder, navigate to your hard drive and select the aforementioned folder where your newly transferred iPod music is stored. You'll see several subfolders with odd names such as F06. Open each subfolder individually to view the files inside--notice that these too have odd names (example: WPDQ). Select all the files inside and drag them into the iTunes window. Once the tracks are in iTunes, the ID3-tag info--album, artist, and so on--will show up. Repeat this for each subfolder.
8 Remove the extraneous music folder.
When you've finished transferring all of your music to iTunes, go to your hard drive and delete the Transferred iPod Music folder. You no longer need it since iTunes automatically copies the new tracks to the iTunes Music folder; it even creates the appropriate Artist and Album subfolders.
9 Tell OS X to put away hidden folders and files once again.
Once you've transferred all of the music files you want from the iPod to the computer, it's time to make OS X not see hidden files and folders anymore (you don't want them cluttering your view down the road). In that same Terminal window, type or paste the following exactly as it appears here into the Terminal window.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Press Enter, then type:
killall Finder
Press Enter.
You're done!

April 16th, 2006, 09:57 Posted By: wraggster
The roll-out of Apple's forthcoming video iPod has been delayed substantially after the company encountered problems with the display and touch-screen interface, Think Secret has learned. As late as early February plans were in motion for Apple to deliver the most innovative iPod to date in April, possibly a tie-in with its 30th birthday, sources said. Instead, Apple's birthday came and went without fanfare.
Think Secret disclosed in early February Apple's true video iPod intentions, which include a wide-screen display spanning the entire front of the iPod with a touch screen interface that is being billed by Apple as a "virtual track wheel." At that time Think Secret had been tracking a late March or April release.
Sources speaking on condition of anonymity say issues emerged with the technology that have sent Apple and the display's manufacturer back to the drawing board to find a solution. As such, a more definitive release date is unknown at this time, but sources say Apple expects the new iPod to be ready by calendar Q4, in enough time for the holiday buying season.
It remains unclear whether Apple is planning a smaller update to the current iPod, which was introduced six months ago, in the interim.
The larger, widescreen display will deliver an improved video viewing experience and herald the arrival of feature-length movie sales as the iTunes Music Store. In hindsight, the fact that Apple remained so far from striking a deal with two leading Hollywood movie distributors, as Think Secret reported in March, suggests the company might have been aware of technological problems facing the new iPod at that time and saw no need to aggressively push for an agreement.
Multiple sources have stressed that Apple will not launch the video iPod without a movie agreement in place, and that a movie store will not open without the video iPod. The impasse in negotiations lies in the terms of sale: Apple wants to sell movies affordably a-la-carte as it does with music, but Hollywood wants a subscription deal.
In the last month, both Cinemanow and MovieLink started selling more Hollywood titles, including brand new releases, in addition to the already established Vongo service. None of the three services are compatible with Mac OS X, however, and sources say Apple was unaware of the Cinemanow and MovieLink deals. Cinemanow bills itself as "the #1 legal movie download store" and sells movies a-la-carte, but for the same price, if not higher, in some cases, than actual DVDs, killing part of the incentive for purchasing a digital download.

One iPod thief has been caught red handed, and red faced, by staff at Apple retailer KRCS.
Adrian Smith, manager at the Nottingham-based Apple reseller, had his iPod stolen from his car last weekend.
Fortunately for Smith, the cable-less criminal walked into KRCS just days later, seeking cables for a "suspiciously familiar-looking iPod".
Smith told Macworld: "I immediately recognized it. I told the bloke I’d have to try different cables, and when I plugged the iPod into the Macintosh it came up as 'Adrian’s iPod' straight away."
A quick-thinking Smith told the 'customer' he’d have to check the iPod further, and while fellow staff-member Iain McKechnie kept the thief talking, Smith called the police, who recognized the description Adrian gave of the man and responded instantly.
An arrest was made on the spot, with Nottingham city police congratulating Adrian on his instant recognition of his own property and prompt reactions.

April 16th, 2006, 09:59 Posted By: wraggster
Apple Computer recently held a meeting to discuss changes to its corporate policy after the company sent an upsetting legalese reply to a third-grade girl who had hand-written a letter to chief executive Steve Jobs with her thoughts on improving the iPod.
When 9-year-old Shea O'Gorman and her third-grade class began learning about writing business and formal letters, she thought who better to write to than the chief executive of the company that makes her iPod nano.
In her letter to Mr. Jobs, little Shea offered her ideas on how the company could improve on its iPod digital music players, such as adding song lyrics so listeners can sing along to their tunes.
After waiting nearly three months, Shea finally received a reply from Apple's Cupertino, Calif.-based headquarters, and the entire family gathered around to read it.
To the dismay of Shea and her family, the letter wasn't from Mr. Jobs. It was from Mark Aaker, Senior Council of the company's Law Department, telling the third-grader that Apple doesnt accept unsolicited ideas, so she should not send them her suggestions and if she wants to know why, she could read their legal policy posted on the Internet.
"She was very upset, and kinda threw the letter up in the air and ran in her room and slammed her door," the girl's mother told CBS 5 News.
Of course, Apple's policy was instated to protect the company -- and anyone who submits ideas to the company -- from ending up in a costly legal spat if similar ideas are ever adopted into future Apple products. However, you'd think the handwriting of a 9-year-old may have drawn company's lighter side.
Apple reportedly decline to comment on the mishap, but the company's General Council placed a personal call to Shea to apologize following a CBS 5 News inquiry.
It was also reported that Apple held a meeting this past Wednesday in which it discussed ways that it could amend its corporate policy when dealing with children.

As the full-sized iPod version of the company's previously released and positively reviewed TuneFM for iPod nano (iLounge rating: A-), TuneFM for iPod boasts the same improved FM transmitter technology, on-iPod screen tuning, and an included car charging cable. The cable attaches to a mini-USB port on TuneFM's bottom. Now there's also a detachable plastic spacer in the package, which can be removed to let the transmitter work while your iPod's inside many (but not all) open-bottomed cases.
In addition to two up/down tuning buttons, four station preset buttons let you save good FM channels for later use, and when pressed together toggle between U.S. and Japanese tuning ranges, monaural and stereo broadcasting modes, or five different volume levels appropriate to different iPod models’ Dock Connectors. The on-screen display isn’t pretty on a big iPod, but it works.

Are you jacked into your iPod 24 hours a day? How about when your cell phone rings?... you know the drill. Pull out one earbud while trying to jam your cellphone headset into the same ear and then pick up the call before it goes to voicemail. It's damn inconvenient and a process no self-respecting geek should ever go through. Now your cellphone and iPod can live together in happy harmony.
The Skullcandy Cellphone/iPod Headset eliminates this cumbersome gadget switching process and replaces both your iPod earbuds and your phone's handsfree headset with one integrated device. When a call comes in simply touch the controls on the cord to silence your iPod or reduce the volume. A built in microphone ensures your calls sound crystal clear, and you get the bonus of better quality audio on your end. You can even continue to listen to your music privately while you chat on the phone. Frankly it's amazing to us how you've managed without these handy headphones till now.
The Skullcandy Cellphone/iPod Headset comes in your choice of an earbud format or behind the ear style headphones.

Prosecutors say there was no Dietrich; Eriksson now faces charges of grand theft, embezzlement, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
When former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson was arrested and held without bail last week pending charges of grand theft, a police spokeman told The Los Angeles Times the investigation into Eriksson's highly publicized crash that destroyed a rare 2003 Ferarri was just beginning.
The latest report from The Times doesn't say if that investigation is over now, but it does point out that the charges against Eriksson have multiplied. Today he was officially charged with grand theft and embezzlement in connection with the wrecked Ferrari (and the rest of his exotic car collection, allegedly leased from British owners and illegally imported to the US), and possession of a gun by a convicted felon.
The Times cites court papers in saying Eriksson was convicted of counterfeiting and drug crimes in Sweden, and says detectives found a gun at his home in Bel-Air, California.
If convicted, Eriksson could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.

Yeah, this thing may lack all of the extras like speakers, easy docking, remotes, etc. But this dock was built from the heart, with love for Apple. It was crafted out of steel, shaped like the traditional Apple logo and will conveniently hold the iPod video. There is enough room on the bottom to plug in the docking adapter. Nice work.

In order to expand its content and advertising presence online, ABC has announced that it will offer its hit television shows to users via ABC.com. Bob Iger, President and Chief Executive Office of the Walt Disney Company outlined the network’s plans at the Bear Sterns Media 2006 Conference in Palm Beach, Florida. My ABC, which has not been launched yet, will offer users the ability to download shows for free.
According to Adage, Iger announced at the Bear Sterns Conference this week, “Mike Shaw [ABC’s president ad sales and marketing] announced today we are going to take a product to market in May. Viewers will have the ability to access shows such as ‘Lost,’ ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on ABC.com. They will be ad supported, free to the consumer.” The advertisements that run with the videos, however, may not be the same ads that appear with the shows’ TV broadcasts.
ABC, like NBC, already sells shows through Apple’s iTunes store for $1.99 each. CBS has a deal to offer user shows through Comcast’s video-on-demand platform.

The beauty of the Homebrew Computer Club, one of the first formal computer clubs in the country, if not the world, was that it kind of broke new ground. The state goal was to bring computing to the masses. The Homebrew Mobile Phone club, however, seems to have missed the boat. Phones are here and locked down tight. I’m sure Verizon et al won’t enjoy a bunch of haxors modding their smartphones. If they were tooling around with homemade cellphones back in 1985, then maybe we’d give them some props.
Anyway, if you want to figure out how to upgrade your phone, go to their meeting out in California on May 4.

April 19th, 2006, 01:59 Posted By: wraggster
A report in the British newspaper the Mail On Sunday has alleged that Kevin Maxwell, the son of the late media tycoon Robert Maxwell, was involved in a failed bid to rescue collapsed mobile gaming company Gizmondo.
According to the paper, Maxwell held a meeting with top executives at Gizmondo last year and discussed a deal which would have seen him providing funding to keep the firm afloat in exchange for a stake in Gizmondo's US parent company, Tiger Telematics.
The deal fell apart, however, when Maxwell failed to produce the funding. Along with his brother Ian, Kevin Maxwell had previously been declared bankrupt with debts of over GBP 400 million - a figure which even dwarfs the debts with which Gizmondo finally sank.
Although Maxwell was acquitted of charges of fraud in the wake of the collapse of the Maxwell media empire in the early nineties, after the suspicious death of controversial media tycoon Robert Maxwell, the actions of the Maxwell brothers and their father were described by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry as "inexcusable."
In a related story, disgraced former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson - who left the company prior to its collapse after it emerged that he had been convicted for his involvement with mafia organisations in Sweden - has been charged on a number of counts after his arrest in the USA last week.
Eriksson, who hit the headlines after his Ferarri Enzo crashed into a pole on a Californian highway at 162mph a few weeks ago, has been charged with embezzlement, grand theft and being a felon in possession of a gun, as well as two counts of drunk driving.
The embezzlement charge relates to taking three cars, including the Enzo, worth a combined amount of over US$ 3 million out of Great Britain despite being prohibited from doing so by lease agreements, while the gun possession charge is due to a gun being found in his home in Los Angeles in contravention of a law preventing convicted felons from possessing firearms. Eriksson has a felony conviction for counterfeiting dating from the early nineties.

Burst.com, the same company that sued Microsoft in 2002 and to which Redmond paid a $60 million license fee in 2005, claims Apple infringes upon several of its patents relating to music and video downloading. As such, it recently demanded that the U.S. District Court in San Francisco shut down a range of Apple services, including iTunes, Quicktime streaming and sales of the company’s flagship product, the iPod. Of course, Apple responded with what amounts to “make me,” filing a counter-suit demanding the rescinding of Burst’s patents in question. First it’s France demanding Apple open its iPod and now Burst demanding back royalties. Maybe Apple should hire a better image consultant.

The iPod AV, what would be Apple's sixth-generation iPod, would be quite a dramatic departure from the previous iPods.
Approximately the same size as the 5G iPod, the iPod AV is composed entirely of a large, touch-sensitive screen. Apple's Click Wheel, found on every previous iPod, now exists only in a digital sense, as a moving part of the iPod AV's touchscreen.
It stands a good chance, however, that these images are fake; MacShrine has posted purported iPod AV pictures before, and they've been proven to be fakes . However, these images are very, very convincing, so only time will tell as to what Apple has in store for the world next.

Omnipresent heiress is teaming up with French publisher for her own line of cell phone games.
See it »
Screenshot Index » Love her or hate her, there's no denying that Paris Hilton just won't leave the public eye. Besides her omnipresence in supermarket tabloids, the heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune has also appeared in films, co-written two books, and is currently putting the final touches on her debut CD. On a more prurient note, she was also the star of a widely circulated XXX-rated video, One Night in Paris.
Hilton has also made her presence felt in games, albeit tangentially. She was among the celebrities invited to help shill the Nintendo DS at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, and was also on-hand at the Xbox 360 launch party last May.
Now, it appears Hilton is getting her own game. Today, Paris-headquartered mobile publisher Gameloft announced has a deal with the 25-year-old starlet/spokesmodel/amateur adult actress to "develop and produce a series of mobile games featuring Paris Hilton and her likeness." According to a statement issued by the publisher, the first game to feature the Simple Life star "will be geared to tweens/teens." Later games will be aimed at gamers of other ages and sexes.
"I'm excited to collaborate with Gameloft to bring the Paris Hilton brand and the glamour of young Hollywood to the cell phones of all my fans around the world," said Hilton in a statement. "My phone has become an all in one entertainment device and mobile games are an integral part of that. Mobile gaming is really hot right now and I'm excited to be part of this project."

Muff recently launched the first three styles in their new Designer Muffs series, limited edition iPod covers created by up-and-coming Australian designers. Each one is handmade in Australia from printed polyester canvas outside with polar fleece and foam inside to keep your 5G iPod or Nano safe and sound. $17 + $6.50 shipping from Down Under. We think the Ghosties design by Seb Godfrey of Drunk Park is the smartest of the three currently available, but your mileage may vary.

File these under the heading “Ummm… Duh?” iPodGear has some shots of real and counterfeit iPod shuffles and Nanos. While they wouldn’t fool anyone who has actually seen a Nano or Shuffle in their lives, it seems that someone has put a load of effort into making sure they are ripping of the ignorant with just the right amount of panache.
While the fake Nano, shown above, won’t fool anyone, the Shuffle box is pretty convincing.

Chip vendor PortalPlayer has been dealt a severe blow by Apple, as the computer company has apparently decided not to use PortalPlayer's media processor in some next-generation iPod models. PortalPlayer has been working on a successor to its PP5021 chip, but the company says Apple will not be using it in new high-end and midrange flash models. However, PortalPlayer expects (or is that hopes?) that Apple will continue using the PP5021 in other models. There's no word yet on whose chips Apple will be using in the next iPods, though we expect rumors to start flying furiously very soon. Meanwhile, in an indication of the power of the iPod ecosystem, PortalPlayer's stock plummeted over 40% in about 10 minutes of trading today -- not a major surprise, perhaps, given that the iPod accounts for a whopping 90% of the company's revenues. But, hey it's not all bad news: PortalPlayer has plans to provide chips for auxiliary displays on Windows Vista-based computers. Which should provide some relief in about two or three years, once such computers actually start shipping.

Did you know you can now download first aid advice in mp3 format to store on your iPod (or any mp3) player? They are copyright free and have been professionally recorded so they will always be crystal clear when ever you need them.
They cover all the situations where giving the correct first aid may mean the difference between life and death.
All the advice provided is up to date and complies with Resuscitation Council guidelines. Of course, we realise that everyone hopes that they are never confronted with these situations. But unfortunately, the facts are otherwise. What is more, the chances are the victim will be somebody close to you.
So visit our audio centre and get downloading!

Apple has long boasted of its culture of innovation, and how this led to such products as the original Mac and the iPod. However, it turns out that, at least in the case of the iPod, Apple had a hidden ally: the US government. During a speech at Tuskegee University, President (and iPod user) George W. Bush told his audience, "the government funded research in microdrive storage, electrochemistry and signal compression. They did so for one reason: It turned out that those were the key ingredients for the development of the iPod." While we have to gratefully acknowledge the efforts of government agencies such as DARPA in some of the fields mentioned by the President, we also feel obligated to point out the accomplishments of private companies in the US and abroad, including IBM, Hitachi and Toshiba -- not to mention the Fraunhofer Institute, which developed the original MP3 codec, and codeveloped (with Sony, AT&T and others) the AAC format used by Apple in the iPod. Still, we have to bow down before his Steveness; we knew he was well-connected, but until now we had no idea of his level of influence in the area of government research. Hey, Steve, while you're at it, why not get the government to resolve the display problems plaguing the next-gen video iPod? We're sure they'll get their best minds on it and fix it in no time.

A high school student was threatened and robbed by a group of teenagers while walking home Tuesday, said Sergeant Tom Guenther of the Evanston Police Department.
Three teenagers approached the Evanston Township High School student on the north alley of the 1500 block of Dempster Street, Guenther said. One of them said, “Give me your iPod or get beat up.” The other demanded the student’s money, while the third remained silent.
The student gave the teenagers his Apple iPod and $8, Guenther said. As the student walked out of the alley, he met “Jim,” an acquaintance, and told him about the incident. “Jim” tracked down the teens and retrieved the iPod before police arrived.
Police searched for the teens but did not find them and did not retrieve the victim’s money, Guenther said.

Hi,
I bought a couple of Gizmondos a few weeks ago, but haven't had much time to do anything much with them until now.
I took the PocketNester source and beat it into submission until it ran on the Gizmondo. The buttons are mapped, sound works, and all that jazz.
I'm including the text of the readme.txt file from my distribution below. Please read it in full before asking any questions about how to get it running and so on.
GizNester 0.1.0
------------------
Gizmondo port by critical of PocketNester 0.7, which in turn is based on nester.
It emulates a Nintendo Entertainment System console, complete with sound.
PocketNester is licensed under GNU Generic Public License(GPL), as is GizNester.
The original licence files and documentation may be found in the doc directory of
the zip file that this readme file came in.
Contact: criticalhippo@gmail.com
Installation
------------
Put GizNester.exe in the root of your SD card, along with the included gx.dll
if you don't already have it.
Usage
-----
Currently only one NES ROM is supported (there's no file chooser). The file must
be put in the root directory of your SD card, and be named:
ROM.NES
Buttons
-------
The joypad does what you'd expect. The other buttons are:
<< SELECT
[] START
|> A
>> B
There is currently no elegant way to exit the emulator.
The system may be reset by holding down Home and Power for a few seconds as usual.
Tests
-----
I've tried it with Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, and they seem to work fine.
TODO
----
ROM selector
Quit
Feel free to mirror it anywhere, provided its origin is not misrepresented.
------------------------
So there you have it, the first NES emulator for the Gizmondo. No flaming needed please. Also, the full thread can be found here: Gizmondo Forums

The growth of the mobile games industry has been stalled by a widespread failure to invest in customer satisfaction, Digital Chocolate marketing VP Jason Spero has told MobileIndustry.biz in an exclusive interview.
Spero believes that the mobile industry has hit a wall in terms of customer penetration not because of too few consumers trialling products, as is the conventional wisdom, but because many of those who do are being disappointed.
"My view is that we're churning users," he explained. "My view is that we're not satisfying end users; my view is that we've got plenty of trial. So many people in the industry are focused on trying to bring more users into the tent - and I'm happy that people are spending effort on trial, we are as well, but the industry as a whole has under-invested in customer satisfaction."
Although he wouldn't name any of the products in question, Spero claimed that Digital Chocolate has identified a "Dirty Dozen" titles which are regularly trialled by users and whose quality is so poor that those users are then lost to the mobile content market.
"There are a lot of them in the racing category, and there are a lot of them in the movies category - and every time a user shows up and downloads one of these, that user is going to be lost to the mobile ecosystem for quite some time," he accused.
"Every time we promote and feature something that is of low quality, and deliver a bad user experience, we've then taken $5.99 or $6.99 from that user, and lost them forever to the ecosystem," he concluded.

The iPod, a study in non-repairable design, is apparently actually a good friend to the environment. According to apple, the iPod complies with the Californian and European Reduction of Hazardous Substances directives, meaning it doesn’t contain much nasty stuff like lead. Those iPod chargers are also Energy Star complaint and the iPod Nano is made of biodegradable starch and the fur of non-endangered field mice. So nice.
Apple also wants you to send them your old computer. From now on, when you buy a new Mac, they’ll offer you free return shipping and recycling for your old PC. In addition, according to the Sierra Club, Apple is a “Forward Green Leader,” which means it gets to fly with Luke during the final Death Star run.

[VCS] Changed: Rendering code now well-organized; now it can run on low-res devices!
[ALL] Added: Configurable ROMs path for each system, accessible in the "Other" panel
[ALL] Added: Per-game settings (click the "Config" button while in "Game Mode")
[ALL] Added: Screen flipping! Just enable "flipping" in the GFX config screen.
- Currently not implemented in all modules due to the coder's (me) laziness
- Just for testing for now, available in NES only (I think..)
[LAUNCHER] Changed: Now there are two "button groups". The first button on the left indicates if you're in
"System Mode" (do stuff console-related) or "Game Mode". Click it to toggle between "System" and "Game".
You'll notice the buttons below change. This way, for each game you have the option of
deleting/accessing its custom configuration (see below).
[LAUNCHER] REMOVED: Categories (was causing too much instability on launcher)
[LAUNCHER] Fixed: A lot of bugs. Launcher should be a lot more stable.
[ALL.GUI] Changed: Hiding buttons in the GFX config menu for features not used on your device (less confusion)
[ZODIAC] Added: 4:3 screen mode
[ZODIAC] Changed: fullscreen launcher
[ZODIAC] Changed: fullscreen buttons in in-game GUI</blockquote>

Mark Ryan has released a new game for the Symbian Series 60 mobile phones, heres the info:
Blockeroo is a free, multiplayer puzzle game for Series 60 mobile phones. It differs from other similar puzzle games in three ways:
Blockeroo is primarily a multiplayer game. You can play in single player or practice mode, but the multiplayer game is much more fun.
Blockeroo allows you to compete against 3 human opponents over Bluetooth. In fact, the game allows you to select 7 human opponents but due to the limitations of bluetooth you are likely to experience considerable network lag if you challenge more than 3 humans simultaneously.
Blockeroo contains some cunning artificial intelligence that allows you to play against bots (algorithms that play Blockeroo without human intervention). Consequently, the multiplayer game can still be enjoyed even if you have no friends with Series 60 devices or indeed no friends.

Belgian teenager has been murdered after he refused to hand over his iPod to two youths attempting to rob him.
Joe Van Holsbeeck, 17, was stabbed several times in the ticket hall of Brussels' central station in the middle of the afternoon and died several hours later.
The Belgian prime minister, Guy Verhofstadt, said that catching the two perpetrators is 'an absolute priority' for the police. He sent his condolences to the man's family.
The head of the catholic church in Belgium, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, blamed today's society for the crime.
'Where were the watchers and guardians, where were we?,' he asked during his easter sermon in Brussels' cathedral.

Just another Gizmondo post, sorry . Anyways, a user by the name of "Xchip" ported the popular Id software FPS, Quake to the Gizmondo. The framerate is poor but playable. It's not likely that anymore releases are coming, but if they do, I'll keep you posted. The only instructions are to plop the *.zip file's contents onto an sd, and put your trial or commercial wads into the corresponding directory (see readme).
<blockquote>hello!
I just took Pocket Quake from http://quake.pocketmatrix.com/ and I ported it to the gizmondo.
It uses software to rasterize and it is a bit slow, but it's still playable, I played the first 3 levels and all went ok
****VERY IMPORTANT****
The executable and the gxx.dll NEED TO BE SIGNED, they wont work as they are.
Unfortunately I'm not allowed to release signed stuff, so somebody else will have to do it :-) any voluntaries?
==How to make it work:
1) look for somebody to sign the gxx.dll and the autorun.exe.
2) copy the contents to you sd card's root directory respecting the directory structure of the zip file.
3) get a pak0.pak.gz, you can find one in here: http://quake.pocketmatrix.com/pak0.pak.zip and copy it into /quake/ID1/
4) then put the sd card in your gizmondo and when its ask you whether to run the contents of the sd card say yes
5) enjoy!!!
==Greetings:
The gizmondo port wouldn't have been possible without the previous work from the Pocket Quake guys
Dan East: Port of the original ID Software source code to Pocket PC,
Fixed point optimizations, Pocket PC gui / gfx modes
999: Skins, Alpha Testing
Jacco Bikker: A 3D engine optimization
Carpediem: MIPS processor-specific debugging
Lucas Alonso (Yoda): SH3 processor-specific debugging
Jay Mattis: Additional SH3 work
==More details on the original Pocket Quake port:
http://quake.pocketmatrix.com/
Source code:
I'll release it as soon as I make it look a bit nicer :-)

Gizmondo port by critical of PocketVBA, a port of VisualBoyAdvance to PPC, which in turn is based on Snes9x.
It emulates Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance consoles.
PocketVBA is licensed under GNU Generic Public License(GPL), as is GizVBA.
Source is available on request to the contact address below.
The original licence files and documentation may be found in the doc directory of
the zip file that this readme file came in.
Contact: criticalhippo@gmail.com
Installation
------------
Put GizVBA.exe in the root of your SD card, along with the included gx.dll
if you don't already have it.
Usage
-----
ROMs must be in a directory called:
GizVBA
in the root of your SD Card.
Buttons
-------
The joypad does what you'd expect. The other buttons are:
<< SELECT
[] START
|> B
>> A
L L
R R
During emulation, the home key followed by the stop key should quit it.
Up and Down on the joypad in the main menu select the ROM, |> starts
Unfortunately the currently-selected ROM name display is not updating at
present, so you'll have to pretend that it has, and count the number of
times you hit down on the pad to scroll through. Play will start the game.
TODO
----
Lots.
GB/GBC support sound, GBA doesn't.
Scaling needs doing quite soon too.
GBA performance isn't wonderful.
GBA sound has been disabled due to performing woefully.
------------------------------------------
Be looking forward to more Gizmondo related posts. There may eventually be enough to start its own section :P

Those of you with cars, you’ll be glad to know Griffin’s finally gotten around to redesigning and updating their PowerJolt iPod Auto Charger. Not only is it not completely butt ugly now, but they include a second cable, for connecting to the iTrip or another mini-USB port device.
The new and imrpoved PowerJolt works with the 5G iPod (video), Nano, Shuffle, iPod Photo, and 4th Gen iPod (click wheel); MSRP is $19.99.

With an iPod in hand, you’re ready to jump aboard a cross-country flight. Yet you’re stuck in the cheap seats, so you don’t have a power outlet, as the passengers at the front of the plane do. How can you keep your iPod continuously pumping out tunes, or help it last through enough video that you can avoid the in-flight movie? Charge ahead with these power-saving and battery-enhancement tips.
Preserving power
You can’t fight physics. All batteries eventually lose their charge. However, there are things you can do to squeeze the most minutes of play time from your iPod.
Put It on Hold Accidentally activating your iPod is easy if the play button rubs against something while it’s inside your pocket or bag. Unless you plan to use your iPod right away, engage the Hold switch so it doesn’t play when you’re not listening.
Switch Off Nonessentials Your iPod’s backlighting, equalizer, and Sound Check features all consume power. You can’t avoid using backlighting when viewing pictures or video, but you don’t need it for listening to music. The equalizer (the tone controls built into the iPod) and Sound Check (a feature that attempts to make all music files play back at the same volume) also accelerate battery drain, though not to the same degree as backlighting.
If you’ve added equalizer effects to songs in iTunes (by clicking on the Equalizer button at the bottom of the window and applying one of the settings), it’s easy to undo them on your iPod. Just navigate to Settings: EQ and choose Flat. This tells the iPod to ignore any equalizer settings your tracks might contain. While you’re in the Settings menu, make sure that Sound Check and Backlight Timer are both set to Off.
Avoid Large Audio Files All iPods except the shuffle and the nano store files on a hard drive. To preserve battery life, the iPod spins up that drive, loads data into a 32MB SDRAM chip (the 60GB fifth-generation iPod is the only one with a 64MB chip), and then spins down the drive. With larger files—for instance, those encoded in the AIFF, WAV, or Apple Lossless format—the hard drive has to spin up more frequently, thus draining the battery more quickly.
That’s why Apple recommends that you stick to playing files that are under 9MB. To create slim files, use iTunes’ AAC or MP3 encoder to rip CDs or convert uncompressed audio files. You can adjust these settings by going to iTunes: Preferences: Advanced: Importing and choosing an encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu.
If you want to play long tracks—endless podcasts, for example—consider using an audio editor such as Apple’s GarageBand to split files into shorter segments. To do that, drag the track into GarageBand to import it and then move the playhead to the spot where you’d like to split it. Choose Edit: Split, select the second half of the track, and press Command-X to cut it. Select Share: Send Song To iTunes, which will save the remaining segment as an AIFF file in iTunes. (Later on, you can open iTunes and convert the files you created in GarageBand to AAC or MP3 format.) Next, delete the first part of the track (the one you just exported). Press Command-V to paste in the second part of your track, and export this as well.
Bulked-Up Battery A higher-capacity replacement battery can add hours of music playing to an older iPod.
Keep It Warm iPods run on lithium-ion batteries, which operate best at around room temperature. These batteries become less efficient when the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, so your iPod won’t play as long in those conditions. Cold weather won’t permanently damage the battery, though. Once it warms up, it should revert back to its usual performance.
The same doesn’t hold true for an iPod in a hot climate. If you use or charge an iPod for an extended period at a temperature that exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit, you could permanently damage the battery and reduce the amount of time your iPod is able to play per charge.
Keep It Charged Lithium-ion batteries perform better if you bump their little electrons around every so often. So even if you’ve purchased a newer iPod, you should still charge your older iPod once a month to keep its battery in good shape. You can also keep it stored in its cradle—there’s no danger of overcharging it.
Use the Latest iPod Software Apple continues to work on increasing battery efficiency. As it finds ways to better battery life, it rolls those tweaks into its iPod software updates. By keeping your player up-to-date with the latest software, you could give your iPod a performance boost.
Power Booster Though slightly bulky, an external lithium-ion battery pack will help your iPod power througßh the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on a single charge.
Pumping up the ’Pod
If you follow the first set of tips, your iPod’s battery life should closely match Apple’s specifications. But a transcontinental trip filled with music and video is likely to drain even the most robust iPod’s battery before you ever touch ground. What then?
Add a Battery Pack On a nonstop flight from San Francisco to New York, you’ll find that your video-playing fifth-generation iPod gives up the ghost somewhere over Indianapolis. The easiest way to add hours to your iPod’s charge is to bring along an external battery pack.
These packs plug into an iPod’s dock connector port and charge its internal battery. The most powerful ones feature rechargeable lithium-ion batteries of their own. The $99 iCel 201, from Lithium House, provides around 50 hours of music or 10 hours of video playback on a fifth-generation iPod. BatteryGeek claims that its $150 GeekPod 100 lets your iPod play music for more than 100 hours, or play video for 12 hours, on a single charge.
You can also purchase less-expensive packs that run on standard batteries (and therefore provide fewer hours of play). The $20 TuneJuice, from Griffin Technology, provides an additional 8 hours of music on a 9-volt battery, and the $50 Battery Pack for iPod with Dock Connector, from (Belkin), adds 15 hours on four AA batteries.
Replace the Battery If you have an iPod that’s out of warranty, consider installing a higher-capacity battery. The capacity of a battery is measured in milliamps (mAh). Companies such as Newer Technology and Sonnet Technologies sell replacements that have higher mAh ratings than the original iPod batteries. Get one of these, and you’ll up your iPod’s play time.
How much? I replaced the 1,200mAh battery in my first-generation 5GB iPod with a $20 2,100mAh battery from Newer Technology. According to Apple, the original battery should last up to 10 hours per charge. With the Newer battery on board, my iPod played music continuously for 21 hours and 25 minutes.
If you’re mechanically inclined, it’s fairly easy to replace the battery in a first- or second-generation iPod. But newer models are tougher nuts to crack. For instance, the iPod mini is particularly difficult to open. And the third-generation iPod includes a thin cable that’s attached to both the motherboard and a connector on the back plate; open this model the wrong way, and you could break the cable, which will destroy your iPod. For this reason, it’s safest to have a professional install your new battery. iPodResQ offers a battery-replacement service for $64, and Other World Computing (eshop.macsales.com) will install a Newer Technology battery for the price of the part plus a $39 service charge.
Hard charging
Even if you follow our tips, you may find that your iPod’s battery behaves in unexpected ways. At that point, there may be little you can do. Here are a couple of common issues.
Inaccurate Readout If your iPod’s battery meter goes from full to nearly empty in a short period of time, bear in mind that it’s providing an approximation. If you suddenly tax your iPod’s battery by, say, playing an episode of Lost, the meter will reflect how much battery life it thinks you have left based on your current usage.
Fast Rundown If your iPod runs out of juice much quicker than it should, you probably have an ailing battery. The battery could be defective (you happened to get a bad one) or damaged (perhaps from being exposed to too much heat). Or it might be nearing the end of its life (iPod batteries should last for around 400 to 450 full charges). If your iPod is under warranty, take it to an Apple Store or visit the iPod Service Request site (depot.info.apple.com/ ipod)—the battery may be defective. If your iPod is out of warranty, Apple will replace the battery for $59. Other companies, such as Small Dog Electronics or the ones we mentioned earlier, can also replace the battery, sometimes for less money.

Squidge released a PC Engine Emulator for the Gizmondo, heres the info:
<blockquote>Ok, here's a very much *alpha* release of SquidgeNgine, just so you know I'm not pretending to do stuff like this...
If you want to try it, you MUST extract this to your root directory of your sd card. That means it should not be in a directory (ie. if your card reader is drive F:, you extract to F:\)
You need to copy roms into the roms directory. The filenames must be in the formal romname.pce. For now, there must be at least two roms, and don't choose the first or it'll crash. I may get around to fixing these bugs later.
No, you can't play the games, as I've only done the input for the menu system so far.
Now the bad news, it currently runs at about half the speed of the gp2x version. This is with full optimisation selected on the compiler.
Skin I've pinched from SquidgeSNES. </blockquote>

According to internet websites, Apple has been asking movie studios to include iPod video content on Blu-ray discs. With the first discs expected to ship next month, Apple apparently wants to make sure there will be a "sufficient library of playable content already available for customers to watch" when the next generation iPod video is released. The Blu-ray discs will be able to hold over 50gb of content, so to include an iPod/computer version of the film on the same disc as the movie should pose no problem.
If this news is in fact true, this would be great news for consumers. Traditionally, the model for this would require consumers to buy an additional version of a movie in a different format (see UMD). And this would be very generous of Apple, considering it could probably make a fortune selling movies on iTunes.

Well, the other shoe has dropped. A week after PortalPlayer revealed the crushing news that the company wouldn't be providing chips for the next version of the iPod nano, Samsung has revealed that it has won the business from Apple. said Jon Kang, a Samsung exec, gloated that “I knew PortalPlayer would take a dive, adding, modestly, “I knew that we would win this design." According to Samsung -- which already provides flash memory for the nano -- the deal represents the company's largest LSI chip deal so far. “It’s a huge win for us," said Kang. Meanwhile, Apple has yet to comment on plans for the next-gen nanos, which are expected to offer increased capacity, and may be less prone to at-home engraving than current models.

Providing protective printed skins for iPods isn’t exactly a new business model, and we’ve so far been immune to their charms as far as our own device is concerned, but we might just break down when it comes to these two particular skins from GelaSkins. Should our Nano be touched by His Noodly Appendage or covered in The Garden of Earthly Delight? Oh, the pain of an impossible choice.
$14.95 for a skin for the iPod Video, Nano, Mini or iPod 4th Gen. They have currently have thirty designs to choose from and are always looking for more, if you feel like submitting.

Camcorder accessory manufacturer Bella has just announced a new device that will let you toss those MiniDV cassettes straight out of your bag and replace them with your iPod or nearly any other USB 2.0-compliant storage system. The Catapult, as its known, is an paperback-sized digital encoder that plugs into any standard or HD camcorder with a FireWire port and processes the video as you're recording, eliminating the need to convert your footage later on. Besides saving time and offering access to higher storage capacities, the Catapult also enables your cam with a number of features not available out of the box, such as time-lapse recording, remote trigger capabilities, and both pre- and post-recording ability. Pre-recording is an especially attractive option, as it seems to buffer whatever your CCD is capturing for a preset timeframe, allowing you to essentially "turn back the clock" and preserve events that already happened once you hit the record button. Bella tells us to expect their new product sometime during the second half of the year, for some amount of money less than $300.

Officially authorised manufacturers of iPod accessories such as Belkin and Griffin have been told that Apple is set to take action against several vendors who are not part of an authorised "Made for Apple" program but are selling products into retailers at considerable lower prices than authorised partners.
Currently Apple gets a 17 pin licence fee from vendors participating in authorised programs and with some vendors such as Hi Fi manufacturers who are manufacturing attached sound systems the licence fee is as much as 10% of the retail sell in price.
In recent weeks several global retailers have found themselves left with racks full of iPod accessories that they purchased from non Apple approved organisations with many such as Harvey Norman in Australia now moving back to the likes of Belkin and Griffin. While iPod product sales increased by up to 400% iPod accessories only increased by 30% leaving retailers with a mass of unsold stock.
Currently the 4 top selling iPod accessories are Cases, Card Chargers, FM transmitters, and attached sound systems. Mr Kannyn MacRae Product Marketing Director of Belkin Australia said "The iPod accessories sell through that retailers were expecting over the holiday period did not happen. Every retailer knew that iPods would be big sellers over the Xmas holiday period so they stocked up on both players and accessories. However many retailers purchased stock that has not sold through and they are now coming back to authorised Apple accessory partners. Basically they bought stock from anybody and no it is still on the shelves as consumers want good quality accessories from branded manufacturers like Belkin, Griffin and others who are manufacturing the high quality accessories".
He added "Apple are getting tough on the non authorised guys and this is good as they intend to enforce the Made For Apple program via the authorised partners".

Belgian police have estimated that 80,000 people joined a silent march through the country's capital on Sunday to commemorate the 17-year-old man who was murdered for his iPod last week.
Joe Van Holsbeeck died from stab wounds after refusing to give up his music player to two men. An impromptu shrine has grown up around the spot where he was attacked in Brussels' central station.
Organisers of the march, which was led by Joe's family, said that they wanted to show that Belgians will not tolerate random acts of violence. The murder occured in broad daylight in the busy main concourse of the station, but no apparent attempt was made to apprehend the killers who have yet to be found. Belgian police have released video footage of them in the station as part of an international appeal to identify them.
The prime minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, promised new measures to tackle hold-ups after Joe's father said on television that more needs to be done to control inner city violence.

Christopher over at Playlist Mag has devised a method of booting those fancy new Intel Macs from an iPod. Power PC-based macs could be booted off Firewire compatible iPods with no problem, but apparently Intel-based macs would tell you it isn’t a valid target.
Christopher’s solution involves cloning a working startup volume onto the iPod, and then booting from there. Take a gander at his walkthrough in order to get your boot on.
One caveat still remains, older Power PC-based macs still can’t boot off of USB based iPods. Good thing we couldn’t afford upgrading!

Sony senior vice president Takao Yuhara met with reporters yesterday to announce that the company is working on -- drum roll, please -- a new digital audio player, software and download service to take on Apple's iPod. Yuhara didn't provide a whole lot of details, though he did say the player would be "typically Sony," by which we assume he meant it would be hobbled by intrusive DRM, poor support for formats other than ATRAC and prices that will make it completely uncompetitive in a market where you can get a decent 512MB flash player for well under $100. Still, we wish Sony luck. We really would like to see the company come up with an audio player that could return this pioneer to its early Walkman-era glory (we have an idea: hand the division over to the team that designs the Walkman phones). But we fear that what we'll be seeing will instead be this year's answer to the Bean.

This program will allow you to transfer your songs of your iPod to a PC. iDump does come wrapped in a installer but you can simply drop the .exe in the root directory on your iPod and run it from there. Connect you iPod and run iDump and you'll have access to all your songs, select the songs you want to transfer then pick a destination directory and how you would like your songs to be named. And then sit back and transfer all the selected songs to the PC.
Version 1.1.1 updated the German translation, changed the selection of songs to a single click, selected items are now also shown in bold text, added the songs Bit Rate to the list.

Eager to relive the Hypercolor T-Shirt days of your youth? Pick up the color changing iPod Nano cases and flash back to the days of Saved By The Bell, Jordan before a championship, and Reebok pump sneakers — all while keeping your Nano free of scratches.
With the Nano getting a size upgrade this summer, now’s the time to be picking out cases.
