It looks like Apple is on to the "account sharing" loophole with the App Store, because iPhone 3.0 firmware is going to make you go to iTunes to re-download apps you've already bought. Here's how the loophole works:
Currently, you're able to hook your friends up with free apps by logging their phone into your iTunes account. Then, when they go to buy an app you already own, iTunes lets them download it again for free. No more!
It's a mild inconvenience to have to sync your phone up with your computer to redownload apps you've already bought, but it's a move by Apple that's pretty understandable. Way to ruin it for the rest of us, unscrupulous loophole-exploiters

The IGDA (International Game Developers Association) has become embroiled in a row over board member Tim Langdell's actions around trademark usage.
Critically-acclaimed iPhone game Edge has been removed from Apple's App Store in the US and UK, with developer Mobigame confirming to website FingerGaming that it was due to "legal issues with a man named Tim Langdell".
Langdell's company owns the worldwide trademark to the word "Edge" and has apparently successfully upheld its usage in Namco title Soul Edge/Blade, as well as Edge magazine, Anthony Hopkins movie The Edge and many other properties in various media.
According to Mobigame's David Papazian, Edge is still available on the European App Store and the developer is currently "in talks" with Langdell.
The IGDA response to the issue appears on the non-profit organisation's website and states: "The IGDA cannot take a position in what is actually a legal dispute between two companies regarding an alleged trademark infringement. Whether or not a company has behaved lawfully is a matter for the courts to decide, not the IGDA board."
Writing on his own blog though, fellow IGDA board member Tom Buscaglia defended Langdell, saying: "While you or I may not agree with those laws related to trademarks, they are what they are. Moreover, the IGDA represents the individuals who make games, not the companies that make them … In any case, I do not see how Tim L vigorously enforcing his legal rights as contrary to the code of ethics in any way."

Compass and auto-focus camera on the cards if shaky, grainy pics are to be believed.
UMPCfever.com has published pictures of what it claims is the iPhone 3.0 handset that many expect Apple to unveil next week at its WWDC ahead of a July 17th launch.
The new features on show include a touch-activated auto-focus, some kind of digital compass and the ability to monitor CPU usage.

Jumping on the completely unconfirmed rumor bandwagon it seems that there have been photos leaked for the new iPhone which include things like an auto-focus camera, video capture, and a compass. The photos were originally displayed (and then quickly removed) on a Chinese forum and quickly spread to many other sites including a complete human translation on the MacRumors forum. Looks like Apple security may have to break a few more pocket protectors to keep employees in line.

Talk to iPhone games developers, and the feature they're most excited about in the new iPhone 3.0 software is the ability to do in-game micro-transactions. And while you might wonder if this is just an excuse to get iPhone gamers to dip into their wallets even more often, it's actually a hugely positive thing for several reasons. Downloadable content, virtual items, subscription billing and fast-track social advancement are some of them, so Pocket Gamer looks into a bit more depth about what you can expect on the micro-payments side once iPhone 3.0 debuts

4GB to 32GB -- that's one hell of a range, but we're hearing from a trusted source that new iPhones in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities just garnered approval by the PCS Type Review Certification Board, the standards body responsible for certificating handsets for use with some carriers (AT&T, for instance). If true, this would lend credence to the belief that Apple will be introducing at least two new models this summer -- ostensibly at WWDC, until we're told otherwise -- because it seems unlikely that the company would be looking to wrap high-end hardware around ridiculously light storage or vice versa. If this means AT&T's going to be able to sell sub-$100 iPhones, it reinforces a precedent set by devices like the E71x that consumers can (and should) expect hot smartphone hardware for shockingly little cash. We'll drink to that.

Acer's been straightforward with the fact that it's been dabbling with Android on netbooks. In fact, the entire industry seems to be. Now we've got word that Acer will in fact launch an Android-based netbook in the 3rd quarter of 2009. The move was announced by Acer's global president for IT products, Jim Wong. The Android netbooks will run Atom (sorry Tegra hopefuls) and presumably cost less than Windows XP-based netbooks that require an estimated $25 tithe to Microsoft. Acer will continue to offer Windows-based netbooks along side the Android builds. Whether Android, an OS designed for smartphones, will succeed in gaining back market share lost to Microsoft remains to be seen. But if Microsoft's boasting about consumers wanting netbooks offering the same OS experience they're used to, well, how can Android succeed where those early Linux distros failed?

Apple has released v8.2 of its desktop software in preparation for upcoming OS update.
The iTunes release comes ahead of the company's big announcements at WWDC on June 8th, at which it will launch v3.0 of its iPhone OS and probably some new versions of the device itself.
It's the latest piece in the iPhone 3.0 jigsaw, after Apple said earlier this month that it would no longer be accepting app submissions for the current version of the OS.
Apple first unveiled iPhone 3.0 back in March, with new features including copy and paste text and content subscriptions.
The new version of iTunes also irons out a few bugs.

Apple released iTunes 8.2 early this afternoon, an update to its music jukebox software and online store interface for the Mac and Windows. It's available for download through the Software Update system preference.
This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 614x523 and weights 96KB.
Apple notes that iTunes 8.2 now supports iPhones and iPod touches equipped with the iPhone 3.0 software update. Other accessibility improvements and bug fixes have also been made.
Jailbreakers beware: Apple also improved security in iTunes 8.2. According to a notice, Apple has improved bounds checking in 8.2 to prevent a stack buffer overflow problem that could lead to unexpected app termination or arbitrary code execution.

Disney supports physical product with gift card initiative
Disney is supporting retail with gift cards that will allow mobile users to download Hannah Montana content to their phones.
The first of the gift cards is available at 600 Sainsbury's stores across the UK, priced at Ł5.99. Customers who purchase the Hannah Montana cards will be able to go online to download games, screensavers and ringtones.
“Hannah Montana is a worldwide phenomena with a passionate fan base for whom mobile phones play a big part in their lives. Bringing the mobile content to retail in a tangible product is a great way for the consumer to find the content they are looking for whether they are buying for themselves or as a gift for a fan,” said Sunil Gunderia, vice president, head of mobile for Disney Interactive Studios, Europe.

Habbo research puts Finnish handset maker first, but LG, Apple and BlackBerry gain ground.
Nokia is the number one mobile phone brand according to the 112,000 teenagers who took part in the Global Habbo Youth Survey Brand Update 2009 (GHYS).
The annual poll, which was conducted by virtual world specialist Habbo in 30 countries, put Nokia top for the third year running, with 21 per cent of those surveyed favouring the brand.
That share is down, however, from 29 per cent in 2008 and Nokia only occupies the number one spot in 13 countries compared to 15 a year ago.
Number two overall is Sony Ericsson with 18 per cent of those surveyed favouring it (also down YoY, from 21 per cent in 2008).
Motorola, meanwhile, has fallen out of the global top five handset brands despite being placed third in 2008. Conversely, Samsung, LG and Apple have moved up to third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Oisin Lunny, country manager, Habbo UK, comments “The mobile phone is an important part of a teenager’s life. With the growth of smartphones, web access and content are as central to the teen mobile experience as SMS and voice once were. Mobile brands must engage with teens across these areas in order for teens to recognise them as market leaders.”

Apple with its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 software includes a feature that will allow you to share a fun game or work-productivity tool with someone else.... (that is if Apple chooses to activate it)
If activated by Apple, may let users share software with one another, according to a person familiar with the technology. Eventually, iPhone users may even get a commission when they've induced someone else to make a purchase, says Richard Doherty, director at consultant Envisioneering Group.
Would the new feature spur sales? They think that these features could dramatically increase sales of apps, music and movies for cell phones. User-to-user recommendations could make discovery of new apps and content easier. Most mobile app stores today offer top 10 lists of the most popular apps and let users post reviews. That aids navigating the more than 35,000 apps in the Apple App Store.
Some people feel it would be cool if Apple activated this so that they could share a game one of them bought but both want to play it so the other person would not have to go searching with the appstore to buy it...
Or would you loose your ability to re-download your apps over the air?

It seems that the rumor mill won't be silenced... But this one seems to be from a trusted source.
This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 600x388 and weights 48KB.
The rumor has it that PCS Type Review Certification Board, which certifies handsets for use with carriers such as AT&T has approved upcoming iPhone model and that too in FOUR capacities i.e 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB as compared to current 8GB and 16GB model. This even increases the credibility of the rumor about a $99 iPhone this summer.
This rumor game has been driving the people crazy since many weeks for now, especially as WWDC keynote gets closer. It has become hard to understand what to believe and what not!
Hope that all this chaos soon ends with the WWDC

We see tons of casemods, but the NES holds a special place in our hearts and memories, so anything in the black-redish orange-gray combo catches our eye pretty easily. The nesPod -- the fine work of flickr user recycledgamer -- is made of a gutted NES controller and an iPod mini circa 2004-2005. The back has been carefully cut out to allow access to the screen and clickwheel, and that's really all there is to it -- no intense mapping of buttons, hacking, or anything -- just a totally chill casemod. You cool with that? Because we are. There's a shot of the back after the break.

It's a truth that many open-minded observers have known for awhile now: Apple rules the roost in the portable media player market, and everyone else is just trying to keep up. Sorry, but it's true. So true, in fact, that SanDisk's own CEO has finally come forward to admit it, recently stating in a Fortune interview that "you can't out-iPod the iPod." And believe us, such a statement probably wasn't easy for Mr. Eli Harari to make. Remember, this is the same fellow that spent boatloads of dough on an "iDon't" anti-iPod campaign back in 2006. 'Course, SanDisk is still a (very distant) second place in the sector, and its flash memory is used in all manners of PMP devices. Still, it's a huge relief to finally hear the mastermind behind slotMusic confess that he doesn't actually believe such gimmicks will put it on a fast track to first place. Then again, crazier things have happened.

Let's just be totally honest with each other here: Walt Mossberg probably has a new iPhone that none of us have ever seen. In fact, he could very well have two or more, depending on exactly what Apple intends to unveil at WWDC next week. We doubt the guy's actively trying to blow Apple's cover, but he's been surprisingly candid in the past ahead of press embargoes both on the original model and the 3G, so it's anyone's guess what's really going on in that mind of his -- other than proper goatee grooming techniques, obviously -- and there's a little gem in his just-released Pre review that gives us pause:
"Whether the Pre is better than the iPhone depends on your personal preferences, though I'd note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations."
Now granted, Walt could simply be talking about all the great stuff 3.0 will bring to the platform, but we tend to think there's something a little more revealing afoot here -- the notion that the new iPhone is awesome enough to potentially tip the scale against the Pre for some cross-shoppers. Whether it's the rumored 3.2 megapixel AF camera, the integrated radio tuner, the OLED display, the faster processor, the butter pecan ice cream dispenser, or some totally unknown stuff that has him fired up, we don't know -- but we wouldn't be surprised if Palm execs were furiously refreshing our liveblog of Schiller's keynote come next Monday.
Update: Reading further into the review, Walt continues to walk the fine line between harmless speculation and thinly-veiled news leakage, saying that new iPhone hardware will be "likely available within a month." He also goes on to mention that it'll "likely" lack a physical keyboard, quashing a longstanding rumor that's gone quiet in recent months.

WWDC can't possibly come soon enough at this point, with the usual endless array of random, oft-conflicting iPhone rumors being tempered only somewhat by the impending release of its archrival, the Pre. Meanwhile, though, we're once again on cleanup duty -- and the latest batch of rumors brings us a new alleged shot of the phone (or one of them, anyway, assuming there are multiple models coming down the pike). If we had to guess, this is supposed to be a graphic you'd see on Apple's web store, and while the black border coincides with everything we believe to be true about the new gear, the "Available today" text there gives us pause -- Apple really hasn't pulled that kind of instant-inventory stunt lately and we've been led to believe from the previous two iPhone launches that it's basically impossible to make it happen with that kind of device.
Moving on, spelunking through iTunes' inner workings has yielded more evidence that suggest Apple will introduce Nike+ support -- a feature arguably long overdue on the iPhone -- and some sort of FM radio tagging, though it's not clear whether it'll be used with an integrated tuner (a rumored feature) or simply as a memory-jogger when listening to another radio. Our money is on the former. Finally, we have what appear to be some screen shots of iPhone 3.0's new parental control system for applications in action, showing exactly what happens when you try to install some sick, lewd, objectionable material from the App Store -- check out our little gallery below for that.

Walt Mossberg of the WSJ is known for getting iPhone hardware weeks ahead of time, so did he unintentionally confirm twice, in his Palm Pre review, that Apple will launch new hardware at WWDC?
Unfortunately for Palm, Apple has both a new iPhone operating system and new iPhone hardware coming, likely available within a month, that could obviate many of these advantages.
AND
I'd note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations.
It's not like everybody didn't already know that new iPhone hardware was coming soon, but for Mossberg to say it in a review, it's all but certain. One, he doesn't just make things up. Two, he has that special relationship with Apple we talked about earlier that lets him get seated at Apple events early, with the VIPs. It's safe to say he knows what he's talking about.

Room Candy Games is to bring a new casual game to Facebook, MySpace and Apple's iPod and iPod Touch that combines a playful approach to stripping with the classic paper-rock-scissor gameplay.
StripPRS lets users dress up an avatar before a tackling a head-to-head battle in which they must derobe a rival's in-game character until one of the competitors are left in their underwear. The game has been heavily promoted in E3 by the Room Candy girls (pictured).
"We had planned on creating a dress up type game, but wanted to do something a little different and more fun," explained Linny Cendana, founder and CEO of Room Candy Games.
"By combining simple paper-rock-scissors mechanics and making it so that the clothing items are an integral part of the gameplay, we believe this game will appeal to a broad base of Facebook, MySpace and iPhone users, especially female players. In addition, no one really loses in StripPRS because it’s all about the surprise underneath!"
CasualGaming.biz interviewed Cendana recently to discuss how the iPhone has provider her company with a wealth of opportunity.

Carphone Warehouse a authorized iPhone distributor in the UK is gearing up for the change. Get this! Carphone warehouse is a huge organisation which is one of Apple's official sales-partner. The screenshot below is their inventory system which shows placeholders for both 16GB and 32GB iPhones in both white and black.
Now we all don't know for sure what is coming out next and Carphone Warehouse's system should not be treated as a confirmation of new iPhones specifications. You decide for yourself! Looks pretty good to me! Looks like the first undeniable proof we have or is this speculation?
Coupled with Best Buy’s recently-released internal memorandum notifying employees of expected low inventory of the current iPhone 3G, as well as a similar advisory issued by Brightpoint, an iPhone distributor in Australia, retail signs are aligned in pointing to new iPhone disclosures early next week at Apple's annual developers conference.
How exciting! I can't wait!

Aiptek isn't dishing out a ton of details on these just yet, but the company has two fairly interesting pico projectors on display at CES, including the flask-like, USB-powered T20 model (pictured above), and the T30 (after the break), which is apparently intended for use with iPods and iPhones. About all that's known about the first of those is that it can display VGA images at sizes up to 42-inches, while the T30 can pump out a slightly larger 50-inch image, and boasts some AV-in recording capabilities -- and, presumably, some internal storage, much like the company's earlier V10 model. Incidentally, that model has also now been upgraded to the V10 Plus (which adds 4GB of memory and H.264 decoding), and Aiptek has also rolled out its new DDV-JF1 pico projector / camera, although that appears to be identical to DigiLife's model, right down to the model number.

Voice control accessories for the iPod aren't an entirely new invention, but they've often been more expensive than the iPods themselves. While it's still far from a bargain, this new $85 AITALK adapter for the iPod nano on display at Computex does seem to be one of the more affordable to date, and seemingly just as full-featured as the rest of the options out there. That includes the ability to speak artist and song names in addition to the usual player controls, and support for multiple languages (although it's not clear exactly which ones). Unfortunately, there's no word on a release 'round here just yet, but you can get a closer look at the device courtesy of our pals at Engadget Chinese by hitting up the read link below.

Ever dream of controlling a billboard with your phone? Us neither. Nevertheless, it is coming thanks to an unholy partnership between CBS Outdoor and Clusta. Using WiFi or 3G, iPhone owners (and others, apparently) can pinch, swipe, and poke at the objects on digital posters to make them zoom, spin, and change color. The idea here is simple: captive consumers buy more stuff. Perhaps, but without video or a detailed explanation describing how easy/hard it is to connect, well, we've already lost interest.

Ha, and you thought that you'd be getting away from the Microsoft tax. Sorry -- Acer chairman JT Wang says that the first Android netbooks will ship with Windows in dual-boot configurations. While your first reaction might be to call JT a Microsoft patsy, he's not, it's smart to hedge, actually, since Android is unproven as a netbook OS and Wal-mart consumers usually don't like being surprised by computers that don't work like the ol' home computer. Besides, these Android netbooks seem to be targeting carriers as resellers so you'll like get a big fat discount when you take one home on contract. Happy?

Careful analysis of a Pre's identity to its host system when connected via USB has now confirmed what's been suspected for a few days now -- the way it hooks to iTunes is very shady indeed. Turns out that the Pre identifies itself as an iPod when it's in Media Sync mode, but only on the system's mass storage interface; the root USB node still comes through as a Palm Pre, which Apple could easily tease out and block if it so chose. We're still up in the air on whether Cupertino would actively move to do that, but regardless, you've got to give a tip of the ol' hacker hat to Palm for its wild ways on this one.

Apple reported to be hiring in-house game devs
Rumours are circulating that the next-generation iPhone will feature a 3D graphics chip, which would allow the device to support far more advanced games. Next week Apple are to unveil a new edition of the iPhone at the company's annual World Wide Developers Conference, reports Kotaku. The website claims that a source has informed it that forthcoming version of the device will include a built-in 3D graphics chip, operate on a new, higher-speed network, and be hit retail in mid-July.

Publisher’s top sports producer hits out at critics ahead of FIFA 10’s upcoming release
FIFA producer David Rutter feels that it is time for the press to stop attacking EA Sports – as the firm attempts to top last year’s groundbreaking FIFA release.
Rutter is the man tasked with meeting EA Sports president Peter Moore’s ambitious targets for FIFA 2010, which include reaching an average Metacritic score of 90 and adding to the ten million current FIFA gamers from the world’s two billion football fans. And Rutter is confident that this pressure will push the team to create the best FIFA game yet.
“I am extremely proud and privileged to be doing this job,” he said.
“It does upset me that people bad-mouth EA, and I used to be one of those people. But the fact that I am allowed to spend so much money on making good gameplay, without having to do anything gimmicky, to me speaks volumes of the work Peter Moore and other people in the organisation are doing.
“And that is doing what matters most to the fans, refining the game, innovating and putting in game modes that people want.”
“The critical and commercial success of FIFA 2009 has put a lot of pressure on us for this new game, but I am fortunate that I work in an environment that lives and breathes on pressure.
“Everyone here knows what is expected of them in terms
of quality.
“It is going to be very, very hard. Our Metacritic is currently 87, and getting those extra three per cent is a really hard challenge to overcome. But I’m confident that when FIFA 10 finally comes out, it will be exactly what the gamer wants.”

So, there's good news and bad news for those of you who'd like to carry the apocalpyse in your pocket. Bethesda wants to bring the Fallout series to smaller screens ... they just haven't figured out how to pull it off yet.
"I think that the world of Fallout is unique enough that it could work on any platform. I think some of the things we do like VATS, I think that could translate to any platform, particularly the iPhone," Todd Howard told us yesterday. "We've looked into those things, we just haven't found the thing that supports the brand well. I wouldn't be surprised if it does happen one day. The iPhone versions that we've designed and said 'Ehh, we don't think we're going to do that right now,' there are ... there are a lot of them."
Could we maybe just have one?

Sure, it's Palm's big day, but that doesn't mean the Apple rumor mill is taking a break -- check out this pic of what might be the new iPhone set to drop on Monday. Yep, that's a matte black casing with no chrome border, a what looks to be a front-facing camera, and iPhone OS 3.0, so it certainly lines up with what we've heard -- but it wouldn't exactly take a Photoshop master to do this one up either. One more pic at the read link -- anyone believing this?

CrazySoft have released S60 5th Edition (5800 XM, N97, Omnia I8910 HD) version of Zeus Quest, a funny adventure game with gorgeous cartoon graphics. The humor reminds us the old classic adventures games by sierra and Lucas. You are Zeus the boss of Olympus which comes back to earth to save the planet. Everything is happening at the classical ancient Greek period (1000-300bc) but you have the chance of switching ages though a time machine...

We've yet to see Palm or Sprint confirm these numbers, but a quote from JPMorgan found in a Wall Street Journal roundup this morning asserts that "sales [of the Pre] in the first two days probably exceeded 50,000." The report continues by mentioning that said figure was "aligned with expectations, but probably fell short of the 146,000 reported first-gen iPhone sales" during its opening weekend due to "capacity constraints in manufacturing." By and large, most analysts are deeming the Pre launch a success, though it's hard to say whether the suits at Palm and Sprint agree or disagree. No matter how you slice it, 50,000 units in a single weekend ain't nothing to scoff at, but we'd say next weekend's sales could be even more telling. You know, if anything goes down today at 1:00PM ET.

We've certainly seen Apple's iPhone act as an integral part of a vehicle before, but we've yet to see one front and center on a motorbike. Hailed as the planet's first "digital superbike," the MotoCzysz E1pc packs some pretty sick technology from end-to-end. Aside from being a zero-emissions, all-electric motorcycle, it reportedly relies on Apple's darling for its instrumentation. Sadly, details about what exactly the iPhone handles are few and far between, but hopefully we'll hear more after its upcoming run in the TTXGP on June 12th. Two more looks after the break.

It's pretty much the eve of Apple's big WWDC press conference, and Daring Fireball's John Gruber is back at the eleventh hour to chime in some more on his previous (and perhaps well-informed) iPhone predictions. He sticks to his previous wagers -- twice the CPU speed, twice the RAM, a heavy emphasis on a new video camera (no word on if there's an additional front-facing one), and $199 / $299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively -- but additionally chimes in that the new device's codename is... drumroll, please... the iPhone 3GS, which he surmises is probably going to be the final product name, as well. Kind of a yawner, if you ask us, but it'd sell like gangbusters no matter what it was called. As for that lowered-tiered iPhone, he's expecting it to be the current 3G model with a price drop to $99. Also on the table is iPhone tethering, which we already know was built into OS 3.0, likely for a fee chosen by each carrier. Teasing farther into the future, he suggests "Marble," codename for an OS X visual overhaul, and the tablet are very much real projects but that there's little to no chance it'll be at WWDC. No clue what the "S" stands for (speed, perhaps?), but at this point we're pretty much counting the minutes to todays's keynote, and our clocks can't tick much faster.

Chillingo is poised to release its latest iPhone game, Defender Chronicles, which it is hoping to make available through Apple's App Store in the coming weeks.
the game is set in a fantasy mediaeval workd, and challenges players with defending their empire from an invasion of orc hordes and evil undead. The game combines classic RPG elements with the increasingly popular tower defense genre, which has been made popular by the likes of Field Runners.
With five game modes and five hand-drawn worlds, the game boasts an impressive feature-set and includes a range of difficulty settings to appeal to a range of casual and traditional gamers.

ew rumour suggests a product code-name that might well be used at retail.
Tech blog DaringFireball has ventured that one of the devices set to be unveiled by Apple at the WWDC tonight will be iPhone 3GS.
The rumour - based on tip off - says that 3GS is the code-name for the new range-topping iPhone (though what the 'S' stands for is not known) and that it could well be used as the final moniker at retail.
DaringFireball also reasserts its previous predictions of the iPhone '3GS' spec, which includes faster processors, double the RAM and twice the storage.

Bethesda's Todd Howard has told Joystiq that the developer thinks Fallout would translate well to iPhone, and has been experimenting with potential designs - but it hasn't found one that works yet.
"I think that the world of Fallout is unique enough that it could work on any platform. I think some of the things we do like VATS, I think that could translate to any platform, particularly the iPhone," Howard said.
"We've looked into those things, we just haven't found the thing that supports the brand well. I wouldn't be surprised if it does happen one day. The iPhone versions that we've designed and said, 'Ehh, we don't think we're going to do that right now', there are ... there are a lot of them."
Howard mentioned that Bethesda was working on a game for Apple's device at New York Comic Con earlier this year. Sounds as though it's Fallout after all, but work is progressing slowly. Here's hoping it strikes on a way to support the brand better soon.

Apple is launching iPhone OS version 3.0 next week, bringing with it a slew of new features, including cut and paste, undo, MMS support and more. But what about the gaming features?
We already knew that Apple would allow for in-application purchases, ushering in the era of microtransactions via add-on game packs and other downloadable types of content. iPhone OS 3.0 also adds new options for developers to tap into other new features, including new "push" notification technology, Google Maps availability in any application, peer-to-peer support for paid apps and much, much more.
Two iPhone game developers, Gameloft and ngmoco, showed off playable apps that take advantage of these new features.
Gameloft's Asphalt 5 takes advantage of peer-to-peer functionality by adding multiplayer over Bluetooth. It also lets players tap into their own music collections by accessing custom soundtracks directly from your iPod library.
ngmoco's Star Defense, just released today, will be one of the first games to take advantage of in-app purchases. iPhone owners can download new galaxies adding "hundreds of hours of gameplay." Publisher ngmoco plans for free and paid-for downloadable content packs.

via Kotaku
Apple's newest iPhone 3GS will be the most powerful yet with more robust graphics and a faster network connection when it hits on June 19 for $200 to $300, the company announced today during their annual World Wide Developers Conference.
The iPhone 3GS will hit the same week as the new game-centric 3.0 firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The 3GS will sell for $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB version. The original 3G will stay on the market for $99 with 8GB of storage.
Apple calls it "the most powerful, fastest iPhone we've ever made."
With the 3GS, launching messaging is faster, viewing Excel is faster and loading SimCity is 2.4 faster. The 3Gs will include a 3MP autofocus camera, 30FPS VGA video capturing and supports OpenGL/Es and 7.2 Mbps HSDPA. The 3GS will also include a built-in digital compass.
The device's battery life has also been improved, with the 3Gs getting nine hours of life on Wifi, compared to the 3G's six, and 30 on audio, compared to 3G's 10.
Last week sources told Kotaku that the new iPhone would sport a gaming-centric 3D graphics chip, run on a faster national network. We were also told that Apple's 3.0 firmware for their existing iPhones, which includes a bounty of new features for gaming, will hit on the same day.
This year the World Wide Developers Conference drew 5,200 developers from 54 countries. Apple also announced today that they have sold more than 40 million iPhones and iPod Touch. They've also logged more than a billion downloads and the App Store has 50,000 programs. That's quite an install base.
Apple's firmware and this new iPhone come at a time when the company is seeing huge growth in the games flooding their App Store. The company seems to be a crossroads of sorts, one that has folks like the Entertainment Software Association sort of hinting that they need to dive in with both feet.

It's been known since day one that iPhone OS 3.0 would support data tethering, and Apple took the opportunity at WWDC today to drive the point home by saying that it'd be launching the service with 22 carrier partners in 44 countries. Of course, it's easy to have assumed that AT&T wouldn't be one of those partners, but we've been told today by a company spokesman that it will be offering tethering on the device -- it just doesn't have any announcements to make at this time. Whether that means availability will be delayed (perhaps until the 7.2Mbps upgrade is built out) or they're just trying to hammer out pricing, we don't know, but it's a promising sign.

This is a bit of a wild one: some very disparate companies are (apparently) teaming up to conquer the car, Microsoft Sync style. Details are a bit slim at the moment, but Continental Auto Group has announced plans to build what they're calling "the connected car." The new hardware and software system "leverages" the Android Marketplace, and encompasses car-friendly APIs, car-specific in-vehicle apps and a touchscreen interface plugged into a system designed to pull data from the web and control internal car systems. On a sketchier front, Phandroid has done some mucking around, and seems to think Google, BMW, T-Mobile, Wind River and SVOX are all on the short list for involvement. It's hard to say exactly how likely that might be, but we're happy to dream electric dreams of an OHA-style Sync killer along with them. Another shot is after the break.

Apple's closing out the new application talk today at WWDC with a demo from Line 6 and Planet Waves, who have joined the Cupertino-based company in order to give your iPhone the ability to control your guitar and amplifier. Sadly, the wireless communication between the Line 6 Variax guitar and the iPhone on stage had some issues, though the folks assured us we could see more later on at Line 6's website. If this thing manages to function, it will also let you re-tune your six-string and change models on the fly. No word on price or availability just yet, but we'll let you know if either of those factoids appear.

Over at WWDC (you may have heard about that event, right?), Apple's just announced ScrollMotion's Iceberg in-app bookstore for the iPhone. It's going to host more than 500 bestsellers, 50 major magazines and about 170 daily papers, with a total of over a million books at launch. Sounds like Apple's ready to take on the big boys at Amazon (who, at this writing, has about 250,000 books in its Kindle store)! More details as we get them.

This one sure took awhile to go from rumor to real, but at long last, authentic TomTom navigation has arrived on the iPhone. 'Course, we would've personally preferred the Garmin touch, but at this point, we can't really find it in our hearts to kvetch. The app shown at WWDC today was surprisingly slick, and while the robot voice didn't exactly get our juices flowing, the currently unpriced TomTom car kit is definitely a boon for those looking to avoid standalone PNDs. Apple has informed us that the application will surface "this summer," though it didn't mention a price; in other words, we can't imagine this being cheap. You think TomTom wants a $19 app undercutting its $300 navigation systems? Doubtful. Video of the new setup is after the break.

We've already had a pretty good idea about what's in store for iPhone OS 3.0, but Apple naturally still had a few tricks up its sleeve, and one of the most impressive is the new "Find My iPhone" service to help you locate your lost phone. While complete details are still a bit light, the service will apparently let you login into your MobileMe account and instantly show your iPhone on a map, and even send a message to the phone and force it to play a sound whether it's in silent mode or not. As if that wasn't enough, you can also use the Remote Wipe feature to erase all the data on the iPhone from afar and restore it to the factory settings. We guess the electric shock will have to wait for for iPhone 4.0.

Buried under the considerable stack of WWDC newness is news that Apple is launching an iPhone iDisk application for MobileMe users alongside iPhone OS 3.0. It lets users browse through and view their remotely stored docs, but there doesn't seem to be an offline component to the app (at least none is mentioned in Apple's brief writeup) -- though a feature that lets you email a download link to an iDisk file is welcome. Naturally, there are plenty of apps that already access iDisk, WebDAV, Google Docs and other online storage systems, and offer added functionality like local caching to boot, but it's at least nice to have a bit of first party support when it comes to basic iDisk browsing for users who are already paying for the privilege -- we just hope it grows into so much more.

We have a hard time believing that the FCC's documentation system is efficient and well-coordinated enough to actually reveal documents at the exact date and time that filers want them to -- so who knows, maybe the feds are in bed with Apple on keeping its most prized launches under lock and key until just the right moment. We kid, we kid -- maybe -- but at any rate, you can now peruse hundreds of pages of specific absorption rate plots for GSM, UMTS / HSDPA, WiFi, and Bluetooth in both 16 and 32GB flavors of the iPhone 3G S. It's not likely going to tell you anything you didn't already know or care about, especially since there aren't any external photos or user's manuals accessible yet -- but if you get really, amazingly bored this evening, it might be worth a look-see.

It won't be available en masse until the 17th of the month, but the gold build of iPhone OS 3.0 is now available to developers -- a promising sign that apps taking advantage of a wide variety of 3.0's new features (push notifications, in-app payments, and the like) will be available by the time it's released to the general public. We've been toying around with the latest cut here and have noticed a few small changes from beta 5; nothing groundbreaking, but notable nonetheless. Most importantly, iTunes is now offering movie, TV and music video downloads directly from the phone, which has caused the bottom navigation bar to be rearranged a bit. We also noticed that the App Store's nav bar was rearranged a bit to accommodate a "More" button where you'll find Top 25 and Redeem links. The Store screen in Settings now shows a nicely-formatted account information screen -- nice, we suppose -- but unfortunately, MMS configurability is still missing, so it's unclear whether AT&T will need to push an update once it flips the switch. Dive into the gallery for a closer look.

Sure, we feign a lack of bias, but deep down in our hearts we only have one love: Symbian Foundation's robo-duckie mascot. Unfortunately for Symbian, it's going to take all the charm it can muster to win over the iPhone App Store's crop of cash-flush developers. Symbian was apparently at WWDC today, doing its best to woo, with all-day festivities involving coffee, food, a "hackathon," prizes, and free Nokia 5800 handsets for attendees. We're expecting Ovi Store to fill in with some solid €1.00 beer drinking simulators and Zippo lighter apps any second now.

Despite not yet having a UK release date, the Palm Pre yesterday made its debut in the North American market. And whilst the hype, queues and sales are all good news for Palm, the fallout that is now descending is not.
Reuters reports that Palm shares closed down six per cent on Monday trading (having at one point been 11.8 per cent down), due to supply and demand concerns for its Pre handset.
Though Sprint said it experienced record sales when it began offering the Pre on June 6th, the article points to at least one analyst who reckons Palm only managed to ship 50,000 units prior to launch compared to earlier estimates of 100,000 units.
All eyes will be on Palm now that Apple has unveiled its iPhone 3GS, which goes on sale June 19th. Nokia's much anticipated N97 goes on sale the same day.

Platform accounted for 10 per cent of mobile games market in US and Canada, says Screen Digest.
The market analyst adds that Apple's device accounted for over $100 million in revenues in the second half of 2008 (games were launched for the device in July).
Screen Digest believes that new smartphone devices will boost the mobile games industry, while the traditional on-portal Java space will slow.
It says growth in the operator distributed mobile games market, which peaked at over 50 per cent in 2004 and 2005, will drop to seven per cent in 2009.
Games for new platforms accounted for 15 per cent of mobile games revenues in the major North American and European markets in 2008.
Screen Digest asserts that Nokia’s N-Gage and Google’s Android Market have the potential to grow the market for mobile games off portal, but that Apple has the key elements to remain market leader.
Jack Kent, research analyst at Screen Digest, said: "At the moment Apple is out in front – in terms of user experience, range of content and in generating consumer and developer interest in mobile games for its devices.
"While the market for mobile games on the App Store is strong, iPhone users still only account for a tiny proportion of the market. In Q4 2008, iPhone shipments made up less than 2 per cent of total handset shipments.”

Fishlabs CEO excited by the iPhone’s OpenGL 2.0 support, cautious on financial viability
Apple’s new iPhone 3G S has the potential to outdo Sony’s PSP in terms of graphical capabilities.
That was the assessment of Michael Schade, CEO of the Germany-headquartered mobile phone developer Fishlabs.
Speaking to Pocketgamer, Schade reasons that the new iPhone’s OpenGL 2.0 support can allow developers to craft games which will “push the iPhone beyond PSP," though he does warn that such opportunities will be resisted by financial barriers.
"As graphic assets need to be designed from scratch to benefit from 2.0 shaders, it will be very hard to monetize the extra effort in the early days," he said.
"It's definitely not worth it for $0.99 apps."
Schade was not however unconcerned that developers will have more iPhone systems to optimise for. He said the catalogue of iPhones and iPod Touches will create “some fragmentation”, but he says Fishlabs can still support all devices, using “just one SKU that detects automatically what device it's running on, and switches to the best graphics automatically."

We can finally keep up with our brain age on our iPhones, thanks to Namco Bandai Networks Europe's Brain Training with Dr. Kawashima, available now at an iTunes App Store near you.
It really comes as no surprise that Dr. Kawashima's brain exercises are now available on the iPhone, with a range of new activities, built-in Sudoku (yay), and the ability to challenge up to three friends on the same iPhone or iPod Touch. The surprise lies in the fact that it took them so long to do it, a sentiment that Namco Bandai Networks Europe President Barry O'Neil echoes.
"It's not often that Apple aficionados have to play catch-up but the 27 million users of Dr. Kawashima's various brain training platforms are testament to the rise of this genre of casual gaming. We look forward to seeing how iPhone users rank against others who are already using Dr. Kawashima's approved brain training games on the move."
Oh yes, and rank will be tested, with global leader boards and the ability to compare test scores via Facebook built right in. It's the kind of iPhone application that just makes perfect sense, and it's now available for $5.99, €4.99, or Ł3.99, based on your local monetary symbol.

Some sobering words this morning from iPhone developer Rick Strom, who has two applications on the AppStore's Top 100 paid list. He mentioned that an app sitting at the #35 slot (which one of his is) is bringing in (on average) around $20 per day. Strom goes on to say that the store is a little more like a lottery, with only a few getting the real wealth, than the gold rush it's been portrayed as.
Though Strom is clearly frustrated by the experience, we don't think $20 a day sounds too bad for hobbyists ... we're just not sure we'd want to base a career around it.

Here's a cute little newly announced feature of 3.0 - Find My iPhone. Users who have the 3.0 firmware and MobileMe will be able to log in to MobileMe, see a map with their iPhone's physical location, and send a message to the iPhone instructing whoever has it to call a number.
And you can use a Remote Wipe feature to erase all data on your iPhone, and restore it to factory settings. Here's hoping Apple never decides to take over the world....

New firmware version v400.34.93 for the E90 has just appeared on Nokia servers. Those who already updated their E90s report that Flash 3 is integrated and the Maps application is "v2.0wk39 b04 open GL LM MN", i.e. newer. No further changes have been noticed so far but a 300->400 update seems to be a major one and should include some more serious changes so keep watching this thread on our E90 Discussion forum for more discoveries.

Apple's being pretty cagey with the hard specs of the iPhone 3G S, but apparently T-Mobile Netherlands didn't get the message -- it's just posted up a specs page listing 256MB of RAM and a 600MHz CPU. That's up from 128MB and 412MHz in the first-gen and the 3G, and it's basically exactly what was rumored. Of course, the 3G S also has that new PowerVR SGX graphics chip that supports OpenGL ES 2.0, so the total speed boost is probably more than just pure clock speed, but we'll find out for sure when we get our hands on one.

It's begun. Although lacking a general release of the SDK, the first homebrew apps have emerged thanks to last night's leaked WebOS root image. The first application puts a stake in the ground by displaying a simple "hello world" on the screen. Unfortunately, the code overwrote the pre-installed Sprint Nascar application... oh wait, that's probably a good thing. Devs have also started tampering with existing code to disable the shutter sound on the camera while leaving the rest of the sounds enabled. Now why would somebody want to do that?
Update: New image from an excited developer that shows scm6079's work over at PreCentral evolving with a 5-second photo timer and more. We're being told that several members of the Pre hacking team consist of old-school PalmOS hackers from the Samsung i300 days. Now if Palm can just lure back the rest of its developers smitten by Android and the lure of App Store riches then they might just make something of this fledgling smartphone platform.

When we were breaking down the meaty differences between the old-school 3G and the 3G S yesterday, we made an assumption about support for OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics APIs in the original iPhone 3G based on the fact that it had been available in the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK for several betas. Turns out, though, that the graphics processor in the 3G S -- the PowerVR SGX -- supports hardware acceleration of both OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0 while the more pedestrian PowerVR MBX found in the iPhone 3G supports 1.1 alone.
What does this mean to you? OpenGL ES is the lightweight version of OpenGL, a powerful library of real-time 3D rendering APIs; many modern phones and other handheld devices support the older 1.1 specification, but 2.0 is less common -- it kicks things up a notch by supporting more complex textures and shading operations, which basically means games written to support it look more badass. Here's the problem, though: because OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0 are completely incompatible with each other, apps need to be written to support both if they're going to be maximally compatible. A 2.0-only app can't simply run on a 1.1-only device and not look as good -- it won't work at all.
Here's where it gets interesting. The App Store has already splintered a bit with certain applications being unavailable to iPod Touch users (dialers, for example), but language in Apple's iPhone SDK documentation leads us to believe that the company eventually intends to begin allowing it to splinter even among iPhone models, maybe as soon as the 3G S is released. That is, they'll allow apps that are only compatible with the 3G S because they're written to take advantage of OpenGL ES 2.0 and don't offer a 1.1 fallback:
"When designing your OpenGL ES application, the first question you must answer is whether your application will support OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenGL ES 2.0, or both... Your application should target OpenGL ES 1.1 if you want to support all iPhones and iPod touches."
Realistically, it was bound to happen; platform aside, hardware is always improving, and it's paralyzingly difficult to require that all apps be compatible with all of a platform's devices regardless of age -- particularly when it comes to gaming. We imagine this'll be an issue with apps taking advantage of the 3G S' other specific features like the magnetic compass and video recording support, too. Question is, what'll be that must-have game (or compass, we suppose) that spurs stubborn 3G owners into shelling out a few hundred bucks they didn't intend to?

We wouldn't really say we "have it together" when it comes to remembering where we put our keys / phone / small children, so Apple's announcement of the Find My iPhone service for MobileMe users came as quite a relief. The service just went live, and with a quick toggle of a preference pane in iPhone OS 3.0 the phone is fully prepared for all sorts of lost and found scenarios -- along with acting as an incredibly intuitive (if pricey) stalking mechanism. Find My iPhone works exactly as advertised, giving us a fairly good location estimate from within our lead-lined underground fortress, and sending annoying messages to the phone complete with sound, even when the handset is switched to silent, though unfortunately the sound is a sort of sonar ping that strikes us as incredibly difficult to locate, unless of course our phone is taken by whale. The only other problem is that both the location function and the message service took a couple minutes to track down our iPhone -- not a deal breaker, but we don't know what the hangup could be. After the device is pinged, a confirmation of the event was sent to our MobileMe email address. A live, enthralling video demonstration is after the break.

Leading iPhone game publisher Ngmoco has no plans to release exclusive games for the newly announced iPhone 3GS, instead offering a more creative way to take advantage of the new model's increased graphical power.
MTV Multiplayer, the website that used to be Totilo's playground, spoke to Ngmoco co-founder Neil Young on the subject of the new, more powerful, more expensive iPhone that Apple announced on Monday. He explained that the company that brought us Rolando and Star Defense plans to continue releasing games that play across the entire iPhone family, rather than branching off to 3GS specific titles.
That doesn't mean the company won't be taking advantage of the new device's increased abilities. The solution, which the company is implementing in the upcoming iPhone first-person shooter, LiveFire, tears a page out of the PC game development handbook.
"We're scaling the imagery based on the performance of the device, so if you've got a 3GS, the game's going to look better and run at a great frame rate. And if you're on an iPhone 3G, the game will look a little bit different, but the frame rate will be the same, 'cause obviously performance and speed are actually an important part of a cool first person shooter gameplay experience."
A perfect solution to delivering a similar game play experience across platforms with different technical specifications. They are sharp, those Ngmoco folks.

So we know that AT&T is going to be behind everyone else in allowing MMS and tethering once iPhone 3.0 firmware is released. The question is why. A BoyGenius report via one of their "AT&T Ninjas" fills in the supposed details.
MMS
The reason AT&T is going to be slow on getting MMS provisioned for iPhones is laughable. To prevent MMS from working properly on iPhones AT&T has added "Opt Out MMS codes" to iPhone accounts preventing MMS. Once the codes are taken off accounts MMS will work fine on the iPhone with 3.0 firmware at no additional cost -- it is included with the standard $20 SMS/data plan required for iPhones already. The catch is AT&T has to removed these Op Out MMS codes from every iPhone account manually. Hah.
Tethering
Tethering for AT&T is a different monster. The delay is reported to be completely intentional on AT&T's part and at the launch of iPhone firmware 3.0 tethering will be disabled entirely for AT&T customers. It will become an option at a later date as soon as AT&T has managed to cobble together na unlimited data...

Dutch website accidentally displays details
T-Mobile has inadvertently given out details of the internal components of Apple’s new iPhone S on its Dutch website.
The device contains 256MB of RAM, compared to 128MB in the original, while the processor speed has been increased to 600MHz from the 412MHz offered by the first two versions.
Although Apple has kept a veil of secrecy over the new devices specifications, visitors to T-Mobile website were able to get the information before the leak was plugged and proliferate it across the internet.

Textures taken from Doom 3 will be used in the game, says id's John Carmack
A new edition to id Software’s iconic Doom series will soon be available on Apple’s iPhone.
Doom Resurrection has been in development for six months at Texan indie outfit Escalation Studios.
The game’s arrival is said will mark a turning point for the iPhone game app library, in that it will offer enhanced 3D graphics far superior to the initial batch of iPhone titles. Textures used in the game have been largely taken from the PC game Doom 3, and downsampled to fit.
id co-founder John Carmack told Venturebeat that a big challenge in designing Doom was the control system, where evaluation and new approaches were taken with shooting and aiming on the iPhone's touch screen.
Following previous reports that the iPhone 3G S’ hardware can match that of the DS and PSP’s, Carmack suggested that the hardware specs for the iPhone are deceptive.
“If you look at it in raw hardware horsepower, the iPhone should be better in performance than the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable,” he said.
“But the truth is, you can’t exploit it all because of software inefficiencies.”
Carmack also explained he will be meeting with Apple to advise the company about enhancing the iPhone’s status as a game platform.

Publisher Chillingo and developer h.grenade have released their 2D shoot-'em-up Circuit Strike. One on Apple's App Store.
The arena-based shoot-'em-up, also known as CS.One, is available now for 59p. The game captures the spirit of classic arcade sci-fi shooters, and is presented in bright neon style made popular by the likes of Geometry Wars.
"CS.One will not walk you to the bus, hold your hand, make you a heart-shaped PB&J or applaud your half-assed skills. It will however, have you begging for more abuse. Call it tough love – through gaming,” said Shay Casey, studio head of h.grenade.
"h.grenade was established to help counter the onslaught of cute happening in mobile and casual games. There are just not enough frenetic, explosive, and stylised action titles available. We want to see more games that are highly polished, original and artistic, fast paced and ideally more violent in the casual genre. Who doesn’t love destruction? Even in small doses.”
Offering what the publishers promise is the first interactive audio/visual environment mixed in real-time, on beat and in response to player actions, CS.One features three difficulty levels and 30 achievements.

Hubert at Ubergizmo walks us through how much more powerful the iPhone 3GS can be for graphics over the previous iPhones—he used to program for Nvidia—and it's potentially mindblowingly better.
It's not just that the new graphics chip is more powerful, it's the jump from a fixed-pipeline graphics architecture to an OpenGL ES 2.0 architecture that he says is "like going from Half Life to Half Life 2." That's because a whole bunch of modern graphics techniques—ones programmers use on big boy computers and consoles for games like Doom 3 and Gears of War—are suddenly available to developers, like bump mapping, shadows, and multi-textures and lightmaps.
Obviously, you shouldn't expect Xbox 360 level graphics—besides developers not wanting to unceremoniously ditch the 40 million other iPhone users out there, the iPhone 3GS is running on just a 600MHz processor with 256MB RAM and that Power-VR SGX GPU, after all. It's just that programmers can do a whole lot more with that than they could the older iPhones, so games are gonna look way better and vastly more sophisticated than they used to on the iPhone, once devs decide to leave the old hardware behind.
Which should be pretty good, since EA said last year the iPhone was more powerful than the DS Sega said it was as powerful as the Dreamcast, the second greatest console of all time.

June 11th, 2009, 17:29 Posted By: wraggster
The short answer: For the time being, yes. But in the future, you may want to upgrade. The long answer after the jump.
The new iPhone 3GS introduces OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible hardware. Its 3D chip—reportedly a PowerVR SGX GPU core integrated in a Samsung chip—is more powerful than the previous generation.
The Graphic Advantage of the 3GS
The new graphic processing unit provides the iPhone with a modern GPU core with 5th-generation shader-driven tile-based deferred rendering. The current 3D graphics unit is 4th-generation tile-based deferred rendering, compatible with OpenGL ES 1.1, but not 2.0.
Simply put, the new GPU is capable of a lot more tricks than the graphics engine in the first and second generation iPhones: Faster frame rates, more detailed and photorealistic shading and lighting, and more polygons. There are also other characteristics that make the iPhone 3GS a better game machine than the iPhone 3G, like a faster CPU and more memory, which allows for larger datasets—bigger worlds—and higher resolution textures.
In other words: The iPhone 3GS has better graphics than the current iPhone 3G, and there is no way around that.
The past vs the future
Just like with computers, this will undoubtedly affect the complexity of applications, games being the most obvious example. With better hardware, developers will create better applications that can do a lot more. Not only have better, more detailed graphics, but also having the capacity to introduce other things, like real time voice chat during games, or physics simulation engines.
This could mean an instant breach between the old iPhones and the new iPhone 3GS. Fortunately for developers and users, the new GPU includes a driver that supports OpenGL ES 1.1. This introduces three possible scenarios. All of these scenarios will happen sooner or later.
• First, developers can choose to develop a single game. That's the easier, less complex option. Games will use OpenGL ES 1.1 on both machines, and the same graphical assets—same textures, same 3D models, same sprites.
This is happening now: Existing iPhone/touch games will work without any problems in the iPhone 3GS too, looking exactly the same.
• Developers can choose to introduce a game programmed for OpenGL ES 1.1, but taking advantage of the more powerful iPhone 3GS hardware to make it look a bit better and have a faster frame rate. This requires some more effort. Ideally, however, they can also choose to make a game for OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0, building both engines in the game so it plays seamlessly for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.
This second scenario will happen soon: Companies like Ngmoco have announced that they are planning to introduce games that will run in all models of iPhone, but will look better in the 3GS.
• Finally, developers can do a 100% OpenGL ES 2.0 game, putting all their resources into this engine and making a great looking game, taking full advantage of the new GS and future hardware. This last part is important, because new hardware will be available and it will be invariably more powerful than the previous generation, allowing for more complex games and applications to appear.
This last scenario won't happen anytime soon. 40 million devices—including iPod Touch—is a market too big to ignore. But it will happen. There will be a breaking point.
The breaking point
In fact, the breaking point may be the iPhone 3GS itself. By introducing a completely new, modern, shader-based 3D API—which is extensible and will be here for many years to come—Apple has put in place the architecture that will make its iPhone OS product line grow. So whenever the new iPhone or the new iPod touch or the new iPod tablet appears, they will be using OpenGL ES 2.x, and that means that developers will be able to scale up and down their apps with ease, without having to handle both standards.
Then, in a not-so-distant future, a developer will really push the hardware envelope and create a killer app. They will drop the iPhone 2G/3G support and set the iPhone 3GS as the minimum hardware configuration. That day, the divide will happen and everybody will think is normal, just like a five-year-old computer can't run Crysis or Photoshop CS4.
Because that's the real key: iPhone OS-based machines are really tiny computers running a version of Mac OS X. So get used to it, because one day people will upgrade their iPhone OS thingie not because new Apple features, but because future killer apps and games. It's just a good thing nobody keeps the same phone for 5 years.

On June 10th, 7 days before the release of the highly anticipated OS 3.0, Apple released the second push notification test app. This time it is the AOL's AIM Developer Preview app. Developers received the following email:
Quote:
Help Test the Apple Push Notification Service
Dear Developer,

10 individuals in the UK have been arrested in connection with an online fraud gang, whereby the group created several songs, had the songs uploaded to iTunes and Amazon, then used thousands of stolen credit cards to repeatedly purchase the songs from these services. It is estimated that they charged approximately $750,000 worth of fraudulent purchases, netting the group over $300,000 in royalties payments

Considering the iPhone's reputation as champion of indie gaming and harbinger of the second coming of the bedroom coder, things have been getting a little glossy of late.
Announcements like Firemint's Real Racing point to an emerging trend for polished, finely crafted releases on Apple's device. No bad thing of course, but here at CasualGaming.biz we're always eager to uncover something a little closer to the grass roots of gaming.
Something like iShift, recently added to the App Store for a sofa's worth of loose change. Armor Games' punchy little release is a slap to the face in monochrome, with serrated edges, snarling dialogue and aloof presentation that looks down the nose at you throughout its short life.
A tidy platform-puzzler, iShift is certainly frayed at the edges, but that is its charm, like a well-behaved punk at Apple's wedding with the masses. Each of the game's levels offers a single screen littered with ledges and spikes in black and white, and a doorway that plays entrance to the next challenge.
Placed on a black platform, in front of a white background, your anonymous avatar stands out in the same colour as the floor on which he perches. He can run left and right, and jump, and that is almost the limit of his ability. His other sole talent is to 'shift', which flips the world on its horizontal axis and changes his tint. Suddenly, the faceless protagonist is as ashen as clothes in a Daz commercial, and what was once the background is now the scenery, and visa versa.
The concept is cumbersome to put into words, and to linger to much on the workings of iShift is to explain away the magic.
The fact is that Armor Games' effort is wonderfully simple in practice, and within a couple of screens you'll be shifting between its dimensions of shade without a second thought, leaping from balck to white to navigate some remarkably cunning levels.
A clock counts away through the game, adding a sense of urgency exaggerated further by strands of loose text that hover over the screen. Some goad you on, but most play tricks on your mind, whispering lies about broken save files and resetting clocks.
The game is superbly implemented for the iPhone, and perfect for missing a train stop or sitting in an increasingly cold bath. However, if you still haven't invested in Apple's device, a Flash version titled Shift is available at Armor's website, so you can make up your own mind.
Alternatively, scoop it from the shelves of the App Store for 59p.

iPhone owners who have yet to get their hands on PopCap’s all-conquering Peggle now have little reason not to do so with news that the game has seen its price slashed on iTunes.
iPhone owners who have yet to get their hands on PopCap’s all-conquering Peggle now have little reason not to do so with news that the game has seen its price slashed on iTunes.
For a limited time only Peggle will cost just 59p – a decent discount from the already very reasonable Ł2.99 price point the game has been selling for since its release on Apple’s service in May.
Peggle has taken the games world by storm in the last few months, with the hugely playable iPhone outing having been joined by versions on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and Nintendo DS.

If you were holding off on buying a Pre until it had some great games, start warming up that credit card. We knew homebrewers were already at work and one of those, a bloke who goes by the name Sargun, has managed to get the iconic Doom running on the phone -- or the open-source PRDoom, anyway, which is close enough for us. Sargun re-built the game to use the DirectFB graphics library to pipe all the two-barreled action to the Pre's framebuffer, and said getting the whole thing up and running was "actually fairly trivial." Your mileage may vary depending on your compiler skills, but with any luck someone will host up some binaries to save us all the trouble

The iPhone's App Store should feature a dedicated area for higher priced 'premium' content, according to the managing director of Dynamo Games.
Such a feature would help more expensive content stand out in the busy marketplace, said the developer of Championship Manager 2009 Express, where a majority of titles sell for as a little as 59 pence.
"I am sceptical about the different price points at the moment and feel there should definitely be a premium content area so that great games aren't lost because of their higher pricing," said Brian McNicoll, in a feature published today.
"Lets face it, these type of games cost a lot more money to make so should be priced in a higher price bracket. People are willing to pay a fair amount of money for good content as has always been the case," claimed McNicoll.
Championship Manager 2009 Express currently sells for GBP 3.49 on the App Store, at the higher end of the market, but McNicoll believes separating price points for games will help the iPhone business mature in the long-term.
"If the platform is going to mature properly it cannot keep the current price points as it will not be viable for most games to make a profit with such a small price point, as it is only the lucky few that really can break through at that price range and make a lot of money."

InfoWorld's Bill Snyder questions whether AT&T's jockeying on tethering and MMS may signal coming iPhone pricing surcharges. After all, as Apple's exclusive US partner, Ma Bell should have plenty of insight into upcoming iPhone features and revenue opportunities. Yet AT&T was very conspicuous in its absence from the list of providers who will support tethering and MMS at Tuesday's launch of the new iPhone at WWDC, and by Wednesday, it was backpedaling furiously, saying it will offer both services — later in the year. Certainly, the exclusive arrangement between the companies is proving to be an ugly roadblock to Apple's iPhone vision. But Snyder thinks it may go deeper than that: 'My best guess is that we'll see horrendous pricing surcharges for tethering and MMS, on top of the already expensive data and voice charges iPhone users pay. I don't think AT&T execs wanted to stand up at WWDC and announce that.

In the madness of E3, retailer Game Crazy released a nice little app for the iPhone/iPod Touch. The impressive little program gives all the standard info we'd expect, but a nice touch is that it also gives users the current trade-in values and prices for used titles, there's even the option to view trailers.
The app is free and the only super useful function we noticed it's missing is the ability to give real-time information of titles in stock at stores. Currently, all it does is note the nearest Game Crazy location. We've contacted GameStop to find out if it has something similar in development, but knowing that corporation, we don't expect its app to give trade-in values. Actually, come to think of it, we halfway expect the GameStop app to ask if we'd want to pre-order anything before even opening.

Engineers from Apple have applied for a patent on an 'emergency' mode for cell phones that would squeeze every last drop of energy out of the batteries. The phone would recognize emergency calls when the user dialed an emergency number, such as 911 in the United States. But another number could also be stored as an 'emergency number' on the phone (a spouse, child, or parent, for example) or the user could manually put the phone in emergency mode. The process would do a variety of things. It would disable 'non-essential hardware components' and applications on the phone, reduce power to the screen and potentially reduce the phone's processor speed. It also would make it harder to disconnect the call and enable 'emergency phrase buttons' on the phone

Bad news for folks hoping a pre-order would save them from that yearly camp out in front of their local Apple Store: iPhone 3G S pre-orders have sold out, and folks who are making new pre-orders are being told that they'll have up to two weeks to get a phone. AT&T customers who do already have pre-orders in still have to line up at 7AM to nab a phone, but at least they've got a guaranteed slot if they show up, while the rest of the world will have to battle over remaining stock when Apple Stores open at 8AM and AT&T stores open to general customers at the same time. Looks like we might get a good riot or two out of this.

iPhone OS 3.0 may not be available to the masses for a couple days yet, but that's not stopping Tapulous (nor Apple's App Store overlords, apparently) from rolling out a new version of its ridiculously popular Tap Tap Revenge that's fully ready to take advantage of push notifications right here and right now. We've taken the new build for a spin, and in brief, it works as designed -- notification times ranged from near instantaneous to just under a minute. One of our editors here was testing on a cellular connection and the other was on a SIM-less iPhone 3G running just WiFi, so it looks like this setup will work pretty seamlessly regardless of what kind of connection you happen to be enjoying / tolerating / loathing at the moment. Follow the break for a quick video demo.

This video of iPhone OS 2.x running on a 24-inch multitouch monitor from Swedish design firm Dreamfield is almost certainly fake, but hey -- it's Sunday night, nothing's going on, and we were thinking about how well touch-specific systems would work on a larger screen after seeing those CrunchPad videos anyway, so we thought we'd get some conversation going. We'd be willing to bet that a future Apple tablet has more in common with the experience shown in this video than with what we currently think of as OS X, but we're not so certain we're seeing anything here that makes us want to throw our mouse or keyboard away -- or spend the entire day with gorilla arm. So -- artfully mocked-up glimpse of the future, or just a pipe dream?
Keeping with the likely-fake theme, there's also a probably-fake video of SNES and PS1 emulators running on the Pre, controlled by a Bluetooth gamepad. Yes, it's incredibly awesome -- and undoubtedly possible -- but until we see some evidence of how things are loaded up and connected with the gamepad we're sticking it in the fake category as well.

Kotaku reports that the ESRB is thinking about expanding their game ratings to include games sold on the App Store. They realize that evaluating every single game is not feasible, but they may still be underestimating the amount of work they'd be taking on, and it could negatively affect some developers. Quoting:
"'ESRB has seen increases in rating submissions each year since its founding and has always been able to keep pace,' the ESRB's Eliot Mizrachi told us. 'We have rated more than 70 mobile games to date and will undoubtedly rate more in the future as the market grows.' Seventy? Over the past, what, four or five years? It's a piddling number when you think of the hundreds of games available through the App Store. Further, many of them are mobile adjuncts to console releases, a different sort of beast from iPhone games. Not all of those need or deserve a rating; but if Apple brings in the ESRB to rate games, with the idea that it'll help parents control what their kids buy for their iPods, then unrated games are likely to be blocked by such filters. The incentive would definitely be there to get a game rated. And what of the cost? Getting a game rated isn't a free service; the ESRB levies a fee that covers the cost of looking through the code and rating the game."

Palm have "politely" warned the Pre homebrewers behind the Pre Dev Wiki not to talk about hacking the handset for internet tethering on their site ... because Sprint might complain.
The caution from Palm suggests that 'they' don't have a problem with someone figuring out a tethering solution for the easily hackable handset, but that Sprint - who don't allow tethering, even on their $99 everything plan - might.
Palm warned that if Sprint complained, they would be forced to react against the people running the site with legal action. As a result the guys at Pre Dev Wiki have pulled any tethering chat and posted an explanation as to why it has gone.
We have been politely cautioned by Palm that any discussion of tethering during the Sprint exclusivity period (and perhaps beyond-we don't know yet) will probably cause Sprint to complain to Palm, and if that happened then Palm would be forced to react against the people running the IRC channel and this wiki.
They have however, added a note stating that Sprint does not have a Pre plan which allows tethering under the Terms Of Service. It seems like everyone involved is sticking a finger up at Sprint, though not necessarily to their face.

Swift, slim and resourceful are three words that accurately describe the new Nokia E72, which was unveiled at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today. Nokia's latest S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (Symbian OS 9.3) based, full QWERTY smartphone brings a rich mobile email and instant messaging experience right out of the box, making it the ideal device for people that want to be productive in both their personal and professional lives.
Building on the formula from the hugely successful Nokia E71, Nokia's best selling QWERTY device to date, this latest arrival in Nokia's Eseries family maintains essential elements of its predecessor, whilst still improving its capabilities in a number of areas. "We included the desktop like email experience from the Nokia E75 and gave it a new optical navigation key for more intuitive scrolling through menus, emails and fast panning of images. We also upgraded the camera to 5 megapixels and added a standard 3.5 mm audio jack", said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia.
On top of these developments, for the first time, owners will be able to set up instant messaging (IM) accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the homescreen. In just a few steps, device owners will be able to connect to their favorite IM accounts such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, amongst many others. These new IM features are complimented by Nokia's range of email solutions with a lifetime license for Nokia's mobile email and IM service, Nokia Messaging, as well as onboard clients for Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler. Accessing popular accounts such as Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Ovi Mail and thousands of other email service providers is simple through improved on-device email setup, with the same easy to use UI integrating all of the owner's corporate email accounts as well.
Performance improvements are evident throughout the user experience including faster Internet up- and downlink speeds. Other notable features which should make the Nokia E72 as popular as recent Nokia Eseries introductions include A-GPS and compass with integrated Maps, including lifetime walk and 10 days of turn-by-turn navigation if activated within the first three months. Conversations are also clearer with active noise cancellation, and a torch can be activated with a single press of the spacebar key. The office capabilities have been updated with a new version of Quickoffice, which delivers Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility as well as free version upgrades when new features become available.
Features include:
* QVGA (320x240) display
* S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 (Symbian OS 9.3)
* 114x59.5x10.1 mm, 65 cc, 128 g
* Optical d-pad (5-way scrolling)
* Quadband, 3G, HSDPA, WiFi
* single-core ARM1136 (Freescale MXC300-30) processor
* Accelerometer, Magnetometer, Compass, A-GPS, Nokia Maps 3.0
* Stereo FM RDS Radio
* 5 Megapixel (2592x1944) camera, VGA (640x480) video recording @ 15 fps
* 250 MB internal storage memory, support for 16 GB microSD cards
* 128 MB RAM (operating memory)
* Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, microUSB, USB 2.0 High-speed, Nokia AV 3.5mm
* BP-4L 3.7V 1500 mAh battery, USB charging
* 16/22 (GSM/WCDMA) days of standby, 13/6 hours of talk time
* 6.4 hours of video recording and 37.5 hours of music playback
The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 350 before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia today introduced the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, a compact S60 5th Edition (Symbian OS 9.4) XpressMusic device that uses a touch interface for accessing people and content on the homescreen. The 'scrolling' Contacts Bar provides direct access to 20 people and their latest conversations and media updates. The homescreen also features touch shortcuts to content and popular social networks, like Facebook and MySpace. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic follows in the footsteps of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, expanding the touch XpressMusic phone range with a youthful device that has a solid stainless steel frame finish and comes in five vivid colors.
At the core of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is the music and entertainment experience, quick and easy access, sharing and mixing a huge selection of media. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is a great music player with 27 hours of playback time, excellent audio quality and a 4 GB memory card (expandable to 16 GB) for storing music and other media. Videos, either self made or from social media sites such as Youtube and Facebook can be enjoyed on the 2.9 inch (nHD, 640x360 pixels) widescreen display. New music can be purchased through the Nokia Music Store, either directly on the phone or through a PC. The music collection is easily managed and can be synchronized with the PC using the Nokia Music for PC application. Calls and music can be conveniently managed and listened to with the Nokia Stereo Headset WH-205 with tangle-free cable.
The innovative 'people carousel' features thumbnail images of up to 20 close friends and provides easy access to them and their communications history including emails, phone calls, photos or other social media updates. Nokia is collaborating with Boingo and offers three months of free Internet access in select markets. Boingo works with hundreds of hotspot operators around the world in familiar locations such as airports, hotels, coffee shops and restaurants. Other features include 3.2 Megapixel camera (2048 x 1536 pixels) with QCIF (176 x 220 pixels) video recording @ 15 fps, 3.5 mm jack, accelerometer, and FM radio. Its dimensions and weigth are as follows: 104x49x13 mm (68 cc), 107 g.

already-living-in-a-virtual-world writes
"On his blog, mispeled writes about a new type of game he'd like to see for the iPhone. It's interesting stuff: '... the integration of a true gaming platform with the capabilities of a phone is unique, at least for the quality of the gaming experience offered. For all intents and purposes, the iPhone is a new system. And new systems demand new gameplay mechanics are explored. For a long time I've been a fan of the MMORPG genre, and the iPhone offers several MMO-type games, especially those in the facebook, social-networking style. However, what I've yet to see is a game that takes advantage of the iPhone's location services, the GPS-like capability of the phone. Tons of applications use it, but no games, as far as I've seen. Why not? Motion sensing is all the rage on the consoles — the Wii popularized it, but now Microsoft and Sony are jumping on the bandwagon. But the iPhone, because it's portable, offers something more. And I want those offerings taken advantage of. I want to play an MMO that knows where I am and links my physical location to a virtual location. I want to create a game that gives the planet Earth a virtual overlay, interactable via a mobile (read: the iPhone) interface.'"

Two researchers have found a way to run unauthorized code on an iPhone remotely. This is different than 'jailbreaking,' which requires physical access to the device. Normally applications have to be signed cryptographically by Apple in order to run. But Charles Miller of Independent Security Evaluators and Vincenzo Iozzo from the University of Milan found more than one instance in which Apple failed to prevent unauthorized data from executing. This means that a program can be loaded into memory as a non-executable block of data, after which the attacker can essentially flip a programmatic switch and make the data executable. The trick is significant, say Miller and Iozzo, because it provides a way to do something on a device after making use of a remote exploit. Details will be presented next month at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas."
The attack was developed on version 2.0 of the iPhone software, and the researchers don't know if it will work when 3.0 is released.

The iPhone Dev Team has got us excited (and Apple worried) by announcing they have a fully-working software carrier unlock ready for the 3.0 firmware ahead of its official release.
On Tuesday evening they will do a live demo of the new yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware, just before the big Apple release. While jailbreaking is already possible on 3.0, this is good news for would-be unlockers with an iPhone 3G, though those going for the 3GS will have to wait a bit longer.

Bad luck if you missed PopCap’s limited-time 59p price promotion for recent iPhone release Peggle over the weekend – it doesn’t sound like many people did, though, as the game is currently sitting proudly at the top of the paid-for app charts.
A PopCap spokesperson told MTV Multiplayer that sales of the game, which was hovering around the 60th position prior to the sale, increased significantly with purchases across the tree days nearly matching the total sales enjoyed by the title since its release three weeks ago.
It doesn’t matter how much any individual app costs on the Apple App Store – chart success purely comes down to the number of times any app has been purchased.
So whilst a price drop of Ł2.40 means less money in the coffers for publisher PopCap, getting its game to top of the charts is arguably a more important long-term victory.
Some argue that Apple’s current store structure discourages high-quality, high-price apps in favour of low-cost downloads. Others would say that the level playing field it offers is fundamental to the store’s success and credibility.

If you are an iPhone owner on a pay-as-you-go data plan, the end is near: AT&T has announced that the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade will terminate your data service. The reason: A "technical change." Update from AT&T.
This the message that that some prepaid users got:
AT&T Free MSG: A new software upgrade for iPhone will be available on 6/17. This upgrade may affect your data service. Please visit att.com/iphone or call 800-901-9878 for a representative. If you download the software and are not on an approved iPhone data plan, your data service will be interrupted.
Meanwhile, Erica at TUAW has called AT&T and confirmed that they want pay-as-you-go users to move to a full data plan. According to the technician: "Based on your plan [official iPhone GoPhone plan], you will not receive the same quality service on your GoPhone plan, even with the same equipment. This is a technical change on AT&T's end on how we service that data plan."
Update: Apparently, Erica was misinformed, according to our contact at AT&T. This is not a change in policy at all, and the pay-as-you-go data plans were really never approved for iPhone.

Waiting days in the blistering sun for a phone that more level-headed folks (that is, not us) will be able to get by simply waltzing into a store a few days later just isn't what it used to be, is it? As iPhones make the inevitable transition from wildly-anticipated objects of lust to commodities, it seems that Apple's putting progressively less effort into carefully orchestrating and micro-managing launches -- and if you want solid proof of that, look no further than the shipping tracking numbers coming off of the online Apple Store's order status site where you'll find that some iPhone 3G S units should be in buyers' hands tomorrow. If you're counting, that'd be a full two days before the official release of this Friday -- and while we suppose the company could have some agreement in place with its carriers to hold onto the units until the official release, we're not giving UPS that much credit.

We've seen a tremendous explosion in the webOS hacking scene ever since the Pre's firmware image leaked out -- between the easily-accessible restore more, Linux foundations and the directly-accessible HTML / CSS / Javascript application code, we've already seen everything from minor tweaks to full on NES emulation to Sprint activation hacks. In short, things are wide open at the moment, and people (including us) are excited by the possibilities -- but that doesn't mean Palm has to play along. In fact, two recent developments have us worried for the future of this happy little scene -- first, Palm's apparently forbidding the Pre Dev Wiki from posting any information about data tethering during the Sprint exclusivity period, and apparently threatening to have the site shut down if it happens:
We have been politely cautioned by Palm that any discussion of tethering during the Sprint exclusivity period (and perhaps beyond-we don't know yet) will probably cause Sprint to complain to Palm, and if that happened then Palm would be forced to react against the people running the IRC channel and this wiki.
Yeah, that's pretty aggro for a company that needs to court all the developer support it can. We're not sure what'll happen after Sprint's exclusivity runs out, but we can't imagine any other carriers are going to be thrilled about hacked tethering options either, so we'd say Palm's going to keep the pressure on until unlocked GSM webOS devices hit the scene -- and we can almost guarantee that tethering hacks are going to make it into the wild regardless of Palm's actions.
Even worse for hackers, Palm's taking an unusually aggressive approach to webOS system updates -- they're mandatory. According to the support docs, webOS updates are automatically downloaded in the background within two days of being available, and they're required to be installed within a week of the download -- after seven days and four install prompts, the phone will give you a ten-minute countdown and then automatically begin installing the update. Sure, we can understand why Palm would want all of its devices to be updated, and we know that a lot of webOS system foundations are in flux while the Mojo SDK is being finalized, but forced updates seem extremely heavy-handed to us -- it's one thing to try and maintain control over a platform, it's another to keep it with an iron fist. Of course, it's probable that we'll see a hack to bypass all of this extremely soon, so maybe it'll all work itself out, but we'd really like to see Palm develop an official policy friendly towards hacking and homebrew and stick to it -- the Pre and webOS have attracted a lot of talent in the past two weeks, and it'd be a shame to lose it.

Those who turned on their PC or Mac the moment they woke up this morning with the hope of upgrading their iPhone’s to the latest 3.0 firmware were disappointed, but there’s not long to wait – 6pm (BST) is now the estimated arrival time.
UPDATE: Reports are now pointing to a 3pm rollout. Which is just minutes away! Time will tell.
The OS release comes ahead of the arrival of the brand new iPhone 3GS this Friday at O2 and CarphoneWarehouse stores.
Whilst owners of the current iPhone 3G will have to get used to lacking the new device’s built-in compass, better camera, video recording facilities and all round enhanced performance, 3.0 still offers the lion’s share of new features touted for the 3GS.
Here’s a quick run down of what 3.0 includes:
* Cut, copy and paste for text
* Landscape keyboard for texting, email, notes and Safari
* MMS texting (will count as four of an O2 user’s bundled text messages)
* Enhanced spotlight search for finding content on the iPhone
* Voice memos
* Improved calendar
* Speedier performance and autofill with Safari
* Internet tethering – as long as you pay the extra to O2
* Stereo Bluetooth
* Parental controls
* YouTube logins for synchronised bookmarking
* Peer-to-peer Bluetooth multiplayer
* Microtransactions and subscriptions for games

June 17th, 2009, 17:53 Posted By: wraggster
The latest firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch and a new, more powerful iPhone both hit this week.
Gameloft CEO Michel Guillemot says that the two are the most significant changes to hit the still emerging gaming platform to date, but points out that Apple still has a ways to go before working out all of the kinks in iTunes gaming.
"I think these are very significant," he said. "Firmware 3.0 is really important because it opens the iPhone apps to the Internet world. It gives a lot of choice to users, the possibility to purchase levels, to contact your friends, to be open to the Internet."
For Gameloft the new firmware, due out today, means creating games that are more open, more customizable to users.
"You can purchase the levels you like, you can race in the cities you like, all of that is something that will make a sort of revolution," he said. "It is amazing what Apple is doing with 3GS, you are really reaching a kind of console power now. With this new model you will be able to create games that are perfect console games, give an experience to users that are second to none."
"For the first time gamers can choose to play on a dedicated console or choose to play on an iPhone, but have no compromise in the experience."
While Gameloft doesn't yet have plans to make games specifically for the 3GS iPhone, due out on June 19, Guillemot says that one day they likely will. Until then, Gameloft games will be scalable.
"I think the games will take advantage automatically of the new iPhone, to a certain extent. For the specific features in an iPhone 3Gs we will have to wait a bit. It's a little early to give you exactly which games will have what. "
While the new firmware brings with it plenty of new game-centric features and the iPhone 3GS is more capable of handling games, there are still plenty of kinks to work out in the App Store.
Prices range from free to $10 and developers regularly complain that their titles get lost in the constant stream of games adding daily to the more than 50,000 apps in the store.
Some have pointed to Gameloft as a culprit in the pricing problems on the system. Several of their games hit the store for $10, much higher than the typical iPhone price. Guillemot defended their pricing model, saying that games on the device should sell for $5 to $10.
"We feel at that price there is still a lot of value for consumers," he said. "It is the right price point in terms of value for money."
But pricing and visibility are a constant source of concern even for big developers like Gameloft.
"There are two trends right now in the App Store," he said. "One is to say we should remain in what is the logical price for a game of that quality on a device of that quality. But there is an attraction in saying that you can reach millions of people, so price isn't important.
"I think the App Store is something that has never been done before. It's a new experiment for everyone including Apple and developers. I think everyone is adapting in real time to what this eco system is."
"Gameloft is looking at all of this as well and adapting also when we can."
Pricing, though, will become less of a concern with the iPhone's latest firmware, Guillemot thinks. That's because more games will likely rely on the ability to sell content within their title to make money.
"It will open a completely new way of monetizing games," he said.
While visibility is a struggle for everyone in the increasingly crowded App Store, Guillemot has faith in Apple solving the problem and doing so without needing to create a stand alone store for games.
"I think everyone is surprised by the level of success of the App Store, getting from zero to 50,000 apps in one year is a challenge for everyone," he said. "It's a challenge for everyone to get visible when you have that many appsl, but I think Apple is working regularly to fine tune the store so the best games get the best visibility."
Guillemot doesn't want a gaming store because he thinks the open nature of the App Store is one of its greatest strengths.
"The logic of it is to be wide-open like the Internet, but to also be promoting people who make a premium experience for users," he said. "If they were to create a specific App Store for games we may lose the Internet effect of it, the openness of what the App Store has today.
"It's a delicate balance to handle," he said. "To keep the richness of apps and to still promote or put forward the apps that are really bringing a significant value or experience to users."
While Gameloft and other developers struggle with the issues inherent in a blossoming gaming platform, there is one thing that most will agree on. The iPhone and iPod Touch, with more than 40 million users, is a viable and very real platform for gaming.
"It is a real gaming device," he said. "It may have even grown the market, instead of cannibalizing it."

It didn't take long for the the iPhone's release for it to get a VNC client enabling remote desktop access. No surprise, then, that it's taken even less time for Palm's Pre to get similar functionality -- well, the beginnings of similar functionality, anyway. As the thrilling video after the break proves, it's possible to get today's hottest smartphone to connect to a VNC server, but rather sadly keyboard and mouse support aren't there yet. So, while you can watch all those wonderful command prompts and other windows majestically move across the screen, you can't touch a single one. Surely that'll be fixed soon, but will it be soon enough?

You can refresh all you want but that won't make the 3.0 update for your iPhone appear any faster. In fact, you might want to give your trigger finger a rest for a few hours -- Engadget bud, Richard Lai, noted in a tweet that Apple's Singapore site says that the iPhone OS 3.0 update will release on the 18th while Apple India says the 17th, the date announced by Apple -- the difference presumably accounting for the 2.5-hour timezone offset between the two countries. That would peg an OS 3.0 release anytime between 1700 and 1930 in London or between noon and 2:30pm in New York. But don't let a little knowledge ruin your obsessive behavior, where's the fun in that?
Update: The theory is supported by reports that carrier 3 in Hong Kong sent a network-wide SMS notifying iPhone owners that OS 3.0 will be available on June 18th, 01:00 local time. That's 1pm on the 17th in New York, 6pm in London, and 1900 in central Europe.

Just because UPS can get you your iPhone 3G S a couple days ahead of its official launch date doesn't mean Apple wants it to. We're getting a bunch of tips rolling in with updated tracking information for shipped 3G S orders folks have placed through the online Apple Store, confirming that Apple has actively coordinated with its shipper to hold on to the packages until "a future delivery date" that isn't specified. We can only assume that'd be the 19th, but our question is this: can you just march down to your local UPS branch and try to pick it up yourself in the meantime? Carriers often require that at least one delivery be attempted before you can waltz in and grab the package, but it might be worth a shot later today.

The iPhone Dev-Team (no relation) have been teasing us for a little bit now with what they've been saying is an iPhone OS 3.0-compatible version of yellowsn0w, and tonight in a video presentation they unveiled ultrasn0w, which should let you unlock any iPhone on the market, running any version of the firmware from 3.0 on down. The trick to how they're getting the jailbreak hasn't been revealed yet for fear of Apple making a fix at the eleventh hour, but if everything goes according to plan, the new hacking software should be out Friday in time for the iPhone 3G S (no guarantee it'll work on the new device). Hit up the read link to watch the magic happen right before your very own eyes.

Just in case a new iPhone model and OS 3.0 weren't enough goodies for this week, Sirius XM support team members are sending emails out announcing the company's long-awaited iPhone / iPod touch app will finally seeing the light of day and will launch this Thursday, June 18th. We just got off the phone with a customer service rep who confirmed the letters are legit, so unless there's some communication breakdown on the corporate ladder, looks like it's really, finally coming. It'll be available as a free download from the App Store, but those who subscribe to the gratis Basic Online Service will have to upgrade to the $2.99 monthly premium plan to have it on the go. We're a bit light on other details -- we can't imagine it being as full-featured as the standalone receivers -- but it's a good bet we'll have all our questions answered before the week is out.

It would make sense for Apple to expand their reach into gaming in light of the success of the iPhone and iPod Touch, Gameloft CEO Michell Guillemot told Kotaku today.
Late last month Yves Guillemot, Michel Guillemot's brother and the CEO of Ubisoft, said that he didn't think Apple's gaming success would stop with the iPhone. But Michel Guillemot says that he doesn't know anything specific about the notion from Apple.
"Everything with Apple is more about rumors than information," he said. " But I would say that there is a kind of logic there."
The success of the games on the iPhone and iPod touch have made everyone pause a bit, Guillemot said
"It would certainly make a lot sense," he said. "The question is where would you position a game devices? You have very, very successful console makers who are extremely effective at what they do. I don't think anyone would displace the three anytime soon."
But, Guiillemot says, as gaming becomes as prevalent as the Internet the notion of platform specific games should eventually go away.
"I would say gaming will be ubiquitous in two or three years time," he said. "We will have many, many platforms enabling gaming, just like we now have many, many platforms enabling Internet."
Guillemot points to how many devices people now use to watch videos as a good example of that.
"Today you watch videos on everything," he said. "You don't care much what it's being watched on. When you are mobile you use mobile. At home you can watch on your PS3 or TV, you can watch on your PC or Mac. Now video is everywhere. I would say gaming will be everyone with a good level of quality in two years time."
And that fits in well with Gameloft's mission, which is to supply games that are "compatible with this very open world where consumers have control over which device they play on and how they play it."
"That is really what Gameloft is trying to do," he said. "That's why we have games playing on every device that is Internet connected, all mobile, all smartphones, all consoles, all portables."
Gameloft's current game catalog includes 250 mobile games, 30 iPhone games, seven WiiWare games, three, DSiWare games, one game each for the Playstation Network and Xbox Live arcade, nine DS titles, and one each for the Wii and Playstation 3.
"We let the consumers decide how they want to play our games," Guillemot said.

If you're an AT&T customer that isn't eligible for a phone upgrade yet, but will be eligible in July, August or September, good news. You're eligible starting Friday, June 19.
AT&T's just loosened the restrictions in order to allow people to who are on the verge of being able to upgrade to do so now. If you're like most people who upgraded to the 3G last year at launch, you'll have to check your eligibility online to see if you qualify. If it doesn't fall within those three months, you'll have to wait until whatever date it says on your account.

Quick facts:
Apple closed the injection vector that YellowSn0w used.
Solution? New version enters called UltraSn0w.
Will unlock ANY iPhone 3g on 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband, bootloader, etc.
Same payload as YellowSn0w, injected into new hole in the baseband.
This new hole was found by an iPhone user named Orinav (no idea if i spelled that right) outside of the dev team.
Not releasing until iPhone 3.0 goes live so Apple doesn't have time to patch the hole.
Dev Team planning on releasing UltraSn0w on Friday. Could they be trying to unlock the iPhone 3G S before release too?

We're still not 100 percent clear what Apple's next move is, but we do know they're a little more than nonplussed about Pre's ad hoc iTunes syncing methods. Despite Cupertino's update to its support site last night, Palm seems unconcerned, as relayed by a spokesperson to Digital Daily. In a statement, the company said disabling the sync "will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience" and that "there are other third-party applications we could consider." In other word, it'd be Apple's loss. We're not quite sure we agree there, nor would we really think "stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre" method is really the best suggestion, but hey, we're not the multimillion dollar phone manufacturer here. We anxiously await to see if and when this cold war is turned up a few notches.

Is it simple? Yes. Risky? A bit. Legal? We'll leave that to the lawyers 'cause we know that you're aching to give tethering a spin over your newly downloaded iPhone OS 3.0 update. We've seen several guides to enable tethering ever since OS 3.0 was first released into beta (and into the wilds) oh so many days ago. However, these were always carrier/country specific and required a bit more command line tampering than the common man could stomach. Now an automated solution has come to our attention that just works, is global, and doesn't require a jailbreak. Essentially, you use your iPhone to browse to a site that you've never heard of (help.benm.at), download a file that promises to reconfigure your local carrier profile, and then switch on tethering as you would had you tithed a monthly tethering fee to your carrier. We've confirmed that it works on T-Mobile NL and on O2 UK. There's obvious risk here so be careful and backup your iPhone first before giving this a shot. And don't go nuts either -- remember, your unlimited data plan likely contains a "fair use" clause and you can bet that carriers won't be happy to see their bandwidth diminish without compensation. Now brace yourselves and hit the read link for the full procedure... ready, go!
Update: Some are reporting that this procedure could disable MMS and visual voicemail depending on your country and carrier -- a fair trade for many.
Update 2: Techradar reports that O2 UK has responded to the tethering hack saying, "we reserve the right to charge customers making modem use of their iPhone or disconnect them." This assumes O2 can identify such customers.

Millions rush to download software update, forcing ISPs and O2 to breaking point
Short of temporarily buying up all of the world’s net servers, Apple could never completely guarantee a smooth global rollout of the new iPhone 3.0 OS, but all things considered last night’s 6pm release went remarkably smoothly.
The only major hitch in the process came courtesy of mobile operator O2 which failed to keep its systems up to speed, preventing iTunes from automatically authorizing MMS capabilities on a user’s O2 account. Activations continued throughout the night with many users receiving a notification message from O2 this morning.

Augmented reality (AR) has mostly been limited to research labs and the occasional cool webcam trick, but it's slowly becoming more plausible as a means for new forms of portable games. We saw one such title -- Sony's Invizimals for PSP -- at E3 and were wowed by its insertion of CG objects into "reality" using the system's camera add-on. Now a tech demo from Georgia Tech Augmented Environments Lab and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD-Atlanta) gives us a glimpse at even more possibilities for these games on devices such as iPhone, PSP and Nintendo DSi.
Titled ARhrrr (geddit?), the game is a zombie shooter in which a flat tabletop map produces a cityscape seen on the handheld (in this case a prototype device from Nvidia). The city's populated with zombies, the handheld can be moved around at any angle and the overlayed city rotates accordingly. The idea behind the demo is that players are controlling a helicopter flying above the outbreak and can shoot zombies by tapping the screen. It's limited, but nonetheless really cool.
We've popped the demo footage after the break to rock your non-augmented reality. It's pretty impressive. So, what implimentations of AR on handhelds would you like to see?

It could be the fact that the iPhone has been available for two years, or the fact that the iPhone is available in 3000 countries to the Palm Pre's one, but Google Trends shows much more interest in Apple's device.
You do see a pretty decent spike there at the end of the graph, probably beefed up by the Pre launch. What could also explain the disparity, beyond the fact that Apple has a bigger marketing machine than Palm, is the probability that most "normal" people haven't even heard of the Pre yet.
We take that for granted, but your mom or your neighbor is an order of magnitude more likely to be aware of the latest iPhone than this new "Pre" thing.

One of the things we love to see is homebrewers using the skills they’ve honed with devkitPro toolchains to enter the commercial market. The most recent programmer to take the next step is Lacey who you might know if you visit the Blitzed dev channels on a regular basis.
His company, Tin Man Games, has just released their first iPhone/iPod Touch title so why not help him make his mark in the industry by grabbing Frootrees from the iTunes store now? It looks like a great little game and the Ł0.59/$0.99 price point is an absolute steal.
We hope to see many more homebrewers follow in Lacey’s footsteps and wish him good luck.

T-Mobile has finally confirmed what the FCC (and its own computers) already told us: the BlackBerry-Bold-inspired HTC Snap, a 3G, Windows Mobile 6.1 QWERTY+trackball followup to the original Dash, is arriving on T-Mobile as a successor to the original Dash.
Since we've played with the Snap (and liked it—warning, April Fools link), and the handset is rumored to be unusually cheap, the two items of interest here are pricing and date of availability. Despite this, T-Mobile neglected to include either of these things in their release, so we'll have to wait, or take the previously leaked July 1st date as fact.

Nokia's Ovi Store duplicates one of N-Gage's main lots in life -- to serve as an over-the-air distribution channel of paid and trial apps -- and in the long term, it certainly seems to make sense that Espoo would be looking to merge the two initiatives into one. The company hasn't announced anything to the effect just yet (and even if it did, it'd have to find some creative way to duplicate N-Gage's social aspect), but it's now taken one small step by porting game trials over to the Ovi Store. If you want the full game you'll still need to buy it using the N-Gage app, so the maddening duality of Nokia's software strategy still basically continues as-is for the time being -- let's just hope this is a promising sign of things to come.

Well that was fast. Orange Boutique in Paris, France did a midnight release of the iPhone 3G S, and the gang at Rapid Repair were there to pick one up and subsequently rip their new toy to shreds. There isn't much here in terms of analysis of parts yet, it's more so just a quick and dirty job to get it out to the world, but hey, if you're into watching someone rip apart brand new, expensive gadgetry, we've got just the gallery for you.
Update: They've identified the chipset as the SoC S5PC100 from Samsung and thus confirm an ARM Cortex A8 running at 600 MHz (operates at up to 833MHz though) and the ability to record 720p video and handle real-time video conferencing should Apple choose to go in that direction (iPhone 3G S records VGA only). PowerVR SGX graphics and 256MB of RAM too as expected. S5PC100 block diagram after the break.

What a difference 18 months makes, eh? The relative short line for today's iPhone 3G S launch at Apple's flagship Regent Street store in London could be attributed to any number of factors: the economy, the steep cost of upgrade for iPhone 3G owners, or the fact that Apple allowed for advanced iPhone 3G S orders with home delivery. Or maybe people just aren't willing to wait in line for a bump in speed, improved graphics, and video recording. We wouldn't call it apathy but the iPhone halo doesn't seem as shiny beneath a spotlight now shared with Android and the new Pre. Regardless, the iPhone 3G S is now on sale in the UK and a few more European countries with North America up next after a few degrees of the Earth's rotation.
Update: According to O2, sales for the 3G S have already surpassed numbers for the iPhone 3G during last year's launch. So it's possible that the pre-orders were in full effect here. However, you have to remember that Europe and O2 in the UK in particular had very serious problems meeting demand at the time of the iPhone 3G launch last year. So this statement likely says more about inventory management than it does the demand of the 3G S vs the 3G.

Such has been the success of the Firemint’s chart-topping iPhone app Flight Control that clones were an inevitability – fortunately Imangi’s new Harbor Master looks to be a lot more than just a by-the-numbers copy.
Available now for 59p, Harbor Control takes many of the aspects that made Flight Control such a huge success but wraps it all up in a nautical setting.
We’ve already had a quick chance to take a look at Imangi’s title and at first glance it appears to be a very polished alternative to Firemint’s classic.
Though the gameplay, and indeed the visuals, are fundamentally the same, subtle differences lead to a quite different game experience. As well as docking boats, players must also leave time for them to unload their cargo and then direct them to safety before other ships can dock at port.
As with its rival, Harbor Master also allows users to create an online profile, upload scores and net in-game achievements.
It looks great though, and for 59p it’s hard to see this one going wrong.

70 per cent of UK consumers would entertain it, if the terms were right, says study.
The finding was released at the Camerjam conference in association with EverySingleOfOneUs, which held its inaugural Mobile Campaign of the Year award at the event. AKQA and Nike won the top award for the PhotoiD campaign. Jonathan MacDonald, CEO of EverySingleOneOfUs, said: "Akqa won the award due to their close attention to user experience, in terms of a highly relevant and transparent offering that was easy to interact with, whilst showing a clear incentive of value."
The conference also quoted figures from an IAB-backed study that said the mobile ad market is worth nerarly Ł30m in the UK.
Not bad, but still a mere 0.16 per cent of the total ad market.

The queues may have seemed smaller than this time last year, but mobile operator O2 has stated that the new Apple iPhone 3GS is way ahead of where its predecessor was at the same stage in its first day on sale.
Some stores have already sold out of the device, though O2 states that fresh stock will be rolled out to it network tomorrow.
“The iPhone 3GS has got off to an incredible start with news reaching us that by lunchtime we'd sold more iPhone 3GS handsets than we sold iPhone 3G devices on launch day last year,” an O2 spokesperson told Pocket Lint.
“Sales are still going strong and we expect to have sold 50 per cent more iPhone 3GS handsets than last year's launch by the close of business today.”
Footfall at O2 shops is apparently ten times above the normal level, and traffic on its website has seen a 150 per cent increase.
It was also revealed that the black iPhone 3GS SKU is outselling its white cousin by a ratio of 3:1.

We knew this was coming, but it's good to know that hackers can still get into the iPhone OS so easily: PwnageTool for Mac OS X is now available for iPhone OS 3.0. Here are the details. [Updated]
• If you already have your iPhone jailbroken and unlocked, don't try to update your smartypanties phone to iPhone OS 3.0. PwnageTool won't unlock your iPhone. You have to wait until Ultrasnow is available for this.
• If you don't need the unlock but want to upgrade to iPhone OS 3.0, go ahead. After upgrading, jailbreak your iPhone with PwnageTool 3.0, and keep using Cydia and your non-official iPhone apps.
• If you have an iPhone 3GS, this won't work for you, so don't even try it.
And like always, use it at your own risk. Update: I downloaded and tried it. It works.

Palm just posted an update on their developer blog telling developers—all of whom are anxious to make apps for the Pre and start making money—that the SDK won't be out until late summer.
On the one hand, it's good news that they're going to get an SDK available in three or four months from launch. The iPhone took an entire year to get an SDK available. The bad news is you have to wait three or four months to get Palm Pre apps that aren't from people with closer relationships to Palm.
But, they're going to "accelerate" their early access program, letting in more developers into their inner circle. That's good news, since it means an increasing amount of apps between now and the general release of the SDK.

With the iPhone 3.0 firmware, Apple upped the max number of app pages on the iPhone from 9 to 11. Theoretically, that increased the number of apps the iPhone could support to 180. Theoretically.
iPhone site appadvice has both rationalized and confirmed that even though you can't see more than 180 apps in the iPhone's menus, the iPhone can support as many apps as it can store. How? Spotlight. It's common sense when you think about it. You can search basically everything on the phone with Spotlight, even content not on the menu. So of course you can search additional apps.
Though let us be the first to say it: If you have more than 180 apps on your iPhone, it's time to do some housecleaning.

Undeniably, Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch have become major players in the mobile gaming market. It seems like every developer under the sun is working on iPhone / iPod game of some kind. There are lots of games out there, and a rising number of them are pretty good, but the iPhone / iPod has thus far been devoid of another major aspect of the game industry: Third-party peripherals. Until now, that is. With the release of iPhone 3.0 firmware, Apple now mentions "Third-party Game Accessories" on the iPod Touch software update page.
The iPod and iPhone already have a huge accessories market, and we're sure that there are plenty of companies looking to carve a new niche with gaming accessories. There are no details regarding what sorts of accessories are on the way, but we'd say some more traditional input devices are a pretty safe bet.
We'll tell you one thing, we can't wait to see what Nyko has cooking.

So, you want to be a webOS developer, huh? That's great kid, we're excited for you, but there's a catch: Palm won't be handing out an actual SDK to most people until the end of Summer. In a post just published on the Palm Developer Network Blog, reps from the company say that although they've been cranking away on getting their full SDK in shipshape (the version given out to current devs is apparently pretty rough), they won't have anything for a broader audience anytime soon. In their words:
With the Pre now in customers' hands and reports of webOS hacks in the news, we know that you are more anxious than ever to get access to the SDK and start developing for webOS.
We've been working very hard on the SDK and are eager to open access on a wider scale, but the software and the developer services to support it just aren't ready yet.
This should come as a bit of a blow to developers hoping to get cracking on Pre software, and will unquestionably turn those who can't bear the wait towards the fully stocked iPhone or Android platforms. However, Palm does say that they'll be opening the program up a bit wider, stating in the post that they plan to crank the number of devs with the early SDK in their hands up from "hundreds to thousands" over the next few weeks. Apparently, that's part of process the company is beginning to ration out access, building to a full release.
Another bit of puzzling wordsmithing in this post comes in the form of the company's stance on homebrew and DIY "experiments" (their words) which have come to light in the past couple of weeks. So says Palm:
As on any popular platform, we recognize that some developers will experiment in ways that cross official boundaries, but we believe that our formal offerings – and community efforts built around those offerings – will provide the best experience for the vast majority of webOS developers and users.
So while it's not exactly a keep-off-the-grass statement, it certainly reads vaguely as to whether or not the company will lock out jailbreakers hoping to dive deeper into webOS. Further confusing the matter? Palm has just released the Linux source code used to compile the Pre's firmware, making the possibility of cooked / custom ROMs a very serious reality, and obviously opening the floor to a lot of said experimentation. Mixed messages? Yes. Our word to Palm right now? Put every effort into getting that SDK out, or you're at risk of quickly burning through all the good will you've just engendered.
Update: We've added some info above which reflects Palm's statement that it will be considerably widening its pool of developers over the next few weeks with access to the early SDK.

There's been talk the last couple days about the fact that there really isn't anywhere in the States to take advantage of the blazing 7.2Mbps downlink connection supported by the iPhone 3G S -- except for one great hope, one diamond in the rough that could become a shining destination for 3G S owners the world over. That destination would be Chicago, where AT&T fired up 7.2Mbps trials late last year, and the hope was that they might be letting lay folk (like us) in on the action in time for the 3G S release. Well, we've been running side-by-side tests today, and the short answer is that we're clearly not accessing 7.2 -- granted, the 3G S is getting marginally faster speeds both up and down, but we figure this can easily be attributed to the new model's faster processor because a doubling of the downlink pipe simply doesn't account for a 100kbps bump in speed (latency was all over the map on both phones, for the record). If you're holding out on upgrading from a 3G to a 3G S, go ahead and crack a smile -- because for now, anyway, this is one spec bump that means precisely zilch in the real world.

That iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak we saw the iPhone Dev-Team pull off earlier this week? It's out now, or at least, part of it is. Pwnage Tool is now flooding torrents, but there's lots of caveats here. Most importantly, this isn't Ultrasn0w, which means if you're wanting to use your toy on T-Mobile or another unofficial carrier, be patient -- it's also worth noting that the jailbreak doesn't jibe with yellowsn0w, so those who rely on it should stay away for the time being. No compatibility with the 3G S, or at least, it probably hasn't been tested... we wouldn't recommend anyone setting the precedent here. You'll need Mac OS X to run it, with QuickPwn for Mac and Windows coming further down the line. Ultrasn0w is also due out at some indeterminate future, so that all said, if you're just needing right now a jailbroken device with spotlight functionality, hit up the read link for all the pertinent details. It should goes without saying, but they're might a few negative side effects to it, and one of the big ones we heard is that YouTube might be fubar'd at the moment.

There may not be a ton of Pre apps available just yet, but it looks like there's enough to accumulate an impressive 666,511 downloads as of June 17th, which likely means that we're close to or past the 700,000 mark by now. As you can see above in graph form courtesy of Medialets, things have been rising steadily as more and more apps became available, and there's no noticeable sign of a drop-off even as apps remained around the 30 mark after the end of the first week. Of course, it's obviously still a little early to draw any firm conclusions, and there's no telling how things could shake out once the long-awaited PreFart and PreBeer apps make their debut.

Today people were shocked to discover that the first turn-by-turn navi iPhone app to hit the iTunes App Store cost $9.99—per month. Well, get used to it, because there are a lot more subscription apps coming.
Think about it: Carriers like Sprint, Verizon and AT&T regularly charge between $8 and $10 per month for GPS apps. Gokivo is just a made-for-iPhone version of Verizon's not-so-great VZ Navigator. Why did you expect an updated and hopefully improved version of that would cost less?
TomTom, TeleNav and Navigon are all expected to be launching their own turn-by-turn navi apps for iPhone before the year is out, and it would be a shock to me if they went any less than $10-per-month.
The question is, are they worth it?
Because we're talking turn-by-turn navi apps, the numbers are easy to break down. Not only do we know what carriers charge already, but we know, for instance, that TomTom still lists its PDA software (supports Dell Axim, Sony Clie and Palm Zire, among other extinct devices) for $99.95—without free map updates. At the same time, we know that even the cheapest decent portable navigators, like the Garmin Nuvi 250, cost $128 on sale—also without free map updates.
These apps, by definition, don't come with maps loaded into the phone—they download the most recent ones from a server which the software maker pays for the right to use on an ongoing basis. So add to that the cost of licensing instantly up-to-date (Nokia-owned) Navteq or (TomTom-owned) Tele Atlas map databases, and you see why no navi can just be a $15 one-time app. As Gokivo's creators, Networks In Motion, say on their blog:
It takes a lot of work and money to deliver all these features and functionality that's included in a turn-by-turn navigation app; and unlike product with maps on the device, we are updating maps and search indexes constantly.
This is just one category, but there are many that will need higher pricing or persistent subscription fees to keep them going. This isn't about The Man—Apple or AT&T or "Macho Man" Randy Savage. It's about developers, and it's rough for them when they want to distribute flagship software over a platform that's used to distributing 99-cent iFarts. The transition must come. I hate to say it, but the iTunes App Store needs more advanced software, and if that means higher costs then, for the sake of the iPhone OS's continued growth and viability, I say we get behind it.
This isn't to say Networks In Motion unveiled the pricing strategy in the most graceful way. But what they did to was make the first move. I think everybody in the navigation category was hoping someone else would go first, and Gokivo drew the short straw.
Now come the next questions, like how many devices you can load the software onto. After all, if the download is $100, and you put it on two iPhones, isn't it more like $50 each?

14-yo Sophie Frost was trying to find shelter from a thunder storm when she dropped unconscious and fried like a bag of chips. The culprit: A lightning bolt. Thankfully, this one didn't die thanks to her iPod.
It's not the first time that this happens. Apparently iPods have a tendency to save people from lightning strikes. Like other times before, instead of killing her the bolt killed the audio player, which acted as an electricity conductor taking most of the damage for her. The British teenager was only burnt on her neck, chest, and leg. She is now being treated at Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, wherever that is. Don't know, don't care, she's safe, I'm headed to Atlantic City. Bye

Hey all,
in case you're all interested, we ported an emulator to the iPhone and submitted it to Apple for approval; however, it was rejected. Any support you show would be greatly appreciated!

Heres the newspost from Link above
iPhone developer Manomio has been secretly working on a major App Store project for the past year that has just been completed, but may never see the light of day in its current form. Readers may remember Manomio as the developer behind the iPhone version of classic game Flashback. Manomio's slogan is "In Retro We Trust" and their mission statement is to bring classic game titles to the leading handheld devices such as the iPhone.
What Manomio has done is to create a fully licensed Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone that can play classic games and even run Commodore 64 BASIC. The full list of features are as follows:
Full speed, Commodore 64 emulator
SID sound emulation
Auto-save, to continue exactly where you left off
Realistic joystick and beautifully crafted C64 keyboard
Portrait and Landscape play
Vertical and Fullscreen gaming (auto rotate for iPod users)
Did I mention it was legally licensed?
Despite some initial work on the project last year, Manomio had originally decided to abandon the project due two main reasons. 1) a lack of licensing rights for the Commodore 64 and 2) the question of whether or not an emulator would be allowed in the App Store.
Manomio, however, ended up connecting with Kiloo Aps who happens to own the license for the Commodore 64 and ultimately managed to sign the proper deals with both Kiloo and Commodore Gaming.
Manomio then contacted Apple Europe in the UK and detailed what they were planning to accomplish and according to Manomio's CEO Brian Lyscarz, "Apple seemed really excited" and so he felt safe that they would sanction the final app. With that assurance in hand, Manomio proceeded to secure the necessary licensing from individual publishers and finalize work on this major project.
It all came to a head last week, however, when Manomio confidently submitted C64 for iPhone along with 3 individual gamepacks (officially licensed) to use along with the emulator. All seemed fine until Manomio received the dreaded App Store rejection email:
Thank you for submitting C64 1.0 to the App Store. We've reviewed C64 1.0 and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because it violates the iPhone SDK Agreement; "3.3.2 An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple's Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s)."
As originally feared, Apple had rejected their app based on the SDK clause specifically prohibiting interpreted or executable code.
Even aside from Apple Europe's early assurance, Lyscarz pointed out to us that there are a number of apps in the App Store that do exactly the same thing from CHIP-8 emulator, programmable calculators and, of course, Frotz, a Z-machine interpreter. Lyscarz is understandably frustrated with the process after having spent so much of his company's time and money into the project. Lyscarz continues to hope that C64 might still be approved.
Here's a video of the game in action. Not all the games shown would be included in the initial launch, but Manomio hopes to eventually obtain licensing for these games as well.

This guide shows you how to jailbreak your iPod Touch (1G or 2G) using the DevTeam's redsn0w tool.
First you'll need to do two things:
Backup and Restore your iPod Touch. Just connect to iTunes and sync. If you have any Cydia apps from a previous firmware, they will be deleted when we restore. Here's a few places you may want to back up manually if you're worried about it... I didn't.

Worried that Apple might not be doing so well? Concerned the company will have to start breaking open the collective piggy banks to keep the lights on? Well rest easy, friends, as the folks in Cupertino have just issued a compelling piece of PR that will surely put your mind at ease -- one stating it managed to move a million iPhone 3G S units over the weekend. That's right, in a fashion not completely dissimilar to last year's iPhone 3G launch (though with far less hiccups), bucketloads of happy buyers flooded Apple's coffers with sweet, delicious cash money for the new smartphone. The buying frenzy was apparently even exciting enough to rouse recovering CEO Steve Jobs from his convalescent state. The seemingly-now-returned honcho is quoted (for the first time in months) in the press release as saying "Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning." Winning indeed Steve... and welcome back.

There have been no shortage of custom apps hitting the Pre already, including a number of old favorites, but all have required a little bit of roto-rooting ahead of time to lay the groundwork for such non-authorized code. That might change in the very near future thanks to the work of a trio of dedicated deviant coders going by the handles xorg, simplyflipflops, and Shaya Potter. Over the span of just a few days they managed to figure out how to package and sign custom apps in such a way that anything can be installed on a completely stock phone -- the only catch is they're waiting to see what Palm has to say about it before they release a full how-to. Since the company has its own plans of making most developers wait at least a few months before setting them free we can't imagine the response is going to be: "This is totally awesome, please tell the world our secrets." But, we'd be happy to be wrong.

As we said following the Pre launch, no new gadget is immune to growing pains -- especially when it's tied to a manufacturing and distribution campaign on the scale of the iPhone 3G S. Statistically, it's just not possible to walk away from an opening weekend without a few hiccups when you're pushing this many units of anything; the best manufacturers can realistically hope for is to keep problems minor, respond to issues quickly, and spin the crap out of anything that comes up.
To that end, here's what we're tracking on the 3G S from the first three full days of sales:
Apple is awarding $30 iTunes store credits to individuals affected by lengthy activation times on their new phones. Regular activations shouldn't take more than an hour or two (ours were basically instantaneous) and ports from other carriers should take a maximum of 48 hours, but some unlucky individuals are still waiting to come online. We probably would've destroyed the phone with a hammer or a direct impact with a wall by now, so our respect goes out to those of you who are still waiting and haven't destroyed anything of value.
It seems that some users are getting the error message pictured above when attempting to hack tethering support onto their AT&T iPhones using mobile config files available online, though repeatedly deleting and re-adding the configuration seems to help in some cases. Of course, AT&T isn't supporting tethering on the phone at this point anyway, so we wouldn't expect a shoulder to cry on if you call in to customer service with this one.
Boy Genius Report is reporting that sounds played by the phone are immediately followed by some sort of extremely high-frequency tone -- the kind little kids and the next door neighbor's dogs hear, but you may not.
Anything else going on out there in the field? Perhaps more importantly, anyone being driven batty by shrieking blasts of ultrasound they couldn't identify?

Sprint requires your Social Security number in order to run a credit check before they will allow you to open an account, according to a store manager in Silver Spring, MD. Since Sprint is the exclusive carrier for the Palm Pre, if you are not willing to provide an SSN, you can't buy this product. I believe a full credit check for this level of consumer purchase is a clear example of overkill. I have supplied an SSN when buying a house and renting an apartment, but never for any other consumer purchase. I have purchased my cars with cash so far, so I don't have first-hand experience, but a car loan also seems to be an appropriate place to require an SSN for a credit check. At the very least, Sprint should have an alternative for people who don't want to give out their SSN. I also found the entire experience a powerful argument against exclusive license agreements

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has reportedly returned to work following six months of medical leave.
Mr Jobs, 54, who is reported to have had a liver transplant, was expected back at his desk at the end of June.
Apple has refused to comment on the matter but did quote Mr Jobs in a press release on first weekend sales figures for the next generation of iPhones.
The blogosphere has noted several sightings of Apple's co-founder around its campus in Silicon Valley.
"Jobs is in the house!" declared CNBC's Jim Goldman, who is regarded as having close ties to Apple.
"Confirmed! Steve Jobs did report for work today, according to employees who have seen him on campus," wrote Mr Goldman in his TechCheck column.
Reuters news agency quoted sources saying Mr Jobs "was seen leaving the main Apple building in Cupertino and getting into a black car alone that was driven off by men in black suits with ear-pieces."
Revelations
In 2004, Mr Jobs was treated for pancreatic cancer.
Last year there were fears that the cancer had returned when he appeared at a major Apple event looking thin and gaunt.
Months of rumour ensued and the company's share price rose and fell as a result.
In January, Mr Jobs revealed that he was being treated for a "hormone imbalance".
Over a week later he sent an e-mail to employees and told them that his medical problems were more complex than first thought and he would take six months off work to concentrate on his health.
The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that Mr Jobs underwent a liver transplant over two months ago, but Apple remained tight-lipped on the subject.
Analysts have predicted that Mr Jobs will stay on as chief executive officer on a part-time basis with a view to moving on to become chairman of the company.

EA has released one of the highest profile console crossovers on Apple’s iPhone and iPod Tough to date – colourful sci-fi outing Mass Effect Galaxy.
The headline inclusions for fans of the franchise are a narrative that spans the events of the popular first console outing and the story told in the upcoming console and PC sequel due out next year and an insight into some of the brand’s characters.
The gameplay itself is fairly hands-off, with much of the action taking care of itself leaving the player to move their character, select enemies to target and to cycle between available weapons.
Much of the title comprises cut scenes and dialogue intended to expand on the game’s universe and lore, thought Galaxy mirrors the branching conversational choices of the first title.
Mass Effect Galaxy is available to download now for Ł2.99.

It's been a while since we've heard a peep about Adobe's Flash 10 for smartphone initiative, but according to a slide from its Q2 Fiscal Year 2009 earnings presentation, the platform's on track for a beta release this October at the company's MAX conference. Prime mobile OS candidates for the beta include those from Adobe's Open Screen Project, which at last count included Nokia, Palm, Google, and Microsoft -- and unless there's been some behind closed doors meetings, the two glaring omissions on that list are still gonna be bugging you come this Halloween.

The Palm Pre can't shoot video. But what if it could shoot something better than video, natively? You know, like stop motion animation?
By holding the Pre's spacebar, you can take about one photo per second—that's pretty fast for a mobile. Continue holding and these photos just keep shooting. Stitch the shots together in an editing program and there you go, the Palm Pre can shoot stop motion (video) clips.
And while the example video is by no means remarkable in its execution, there are surely a few Pre owners out there who could figure out an entertaining use for the undisclosed function.

Companies forge alliance to create next generation of portable internet devices
Intel and Nokia have announced a wide-ranging partnership intended to revolutionise mobile computing.
Encompassing design, hardware, software and complementary technologies, the deal will culminate in devices that will eventually replace the mobile phone, netbook and laptop.
The end result will be a new class of Intel-based mobile devices and chipsets designed for the next generation of devices, according to the firms. Much of this will focus on the agreement between the companies for Intel to licence and integrate Nokia's HSPA/3G modem technologies into the chipsets.
The two companies are also working with the Linux foundation to develop a new version of its Moblin OS – which currently powers Nokia's high end handsets such as the N810 internet tablet – for the new devices.
"This Intel and Nokia collaboration unites and focuses many of the brightest computing and communications minds in the world, and will ultimately deliver open and standards-based technology, which history shows drive rapid innovation, adoption and consumer choice," explained Intel's senior vice president and general manager for the Ultra Mobility Group, Anand Chandrasekher.
"With the convergence of the internet and mobility as the team's only barrier, I can only imagine the innovation that will come out of our unique relationship with Nokia. The possibilities are endless."
Nokia was keen to stress that this deal wasn't simply a talking shop and would lead to new products. "Today's announcement represents a significant commitment to work together on the future of mobile computing, and we plan to turn our joint research into action," commented executive vice president for devices at Nokia, Kai Öistämö.
"We will explore new ideas in designs, materials and displays that will go far beyond devices and services on the market today. This collaboration will be compelling not only for our companies, but also for our industries, our partners and of course, for consumers."

UK mobile operator T-Mobile has confirmed that its second and the UK’s third Google Android enabled mobile phone is on the way – though the debate rages as to what handset it will actually be.
T-Mobile was the first telecoms firm to offer an Android device in the UK in the form of the HTC Dream, or T-Mobile G1 as it was known in the UK. This launch was followed in April this year by Vodafone’s HTC Magic – the QWERTY-less successor to the Dream.
Whilst T-Mobile has confirmed the name of its next handset – the T-Mobile G1 Touch – it’s still not known what handset it will actually be.
The logical answer is the HTC Magic, but with Vodafone currently believed to be enjoying an exclusivity period on that device attentions have turned elsewhere. PCWorld speculates that the G1 Touch could be the little known Huawei U8230 (pictured) but it’s all just speculation at the moment.
Other sources have suggested that HTC is lining up a brand new version of the Dream for T-Mobile that boasts a better touch screen and no QWERTY keyboard.

If you're anything at all like us, you were just a tad disappointed by the color "options" of Apple's newest foray into the world of mobile phones, the iPhone 3GS. After all, who wants to be limited to just black and white these days? Not us, that's for sure -- and ColorWare's just announced a fix for all that. Pricing for these customs jobs runs $150 for the back of the handset, $20 a piece for the bezel frame and button, and $15 the SIM holder. They'll also do up your earbuds for an additional $15. A small price to pay for beauty, no? Another shot of a different color combo after the break.

You know, we might be inclined to disbelieve this exciting tale of derring-do if it weren't for the highly improbably heroics and ingenuity displayed by its three protagonists -- you just can't make this stuff up. Probably. Kevin, Ryan and Mark were in Chicago minding their own nerdness out at Brickworld when Kevin left his iPhone behind at a dive bar. When they went back for it just minutes later the phone was gone, and instead of calling the cops like a bunch of suckers, Kevin and co. did the right thing and pulled out a Sprint 3G dongle and a MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, Find My iPhone couldn't get a lock on his phone at all -- it was either off or out of data range. The next day at lunch he finally got a delivery confirmation message from me.com, which kicked off a wild, dangerous chase into the wilds of Chicago. We won't spoil the ending for you (he finds the iPhone), but Kevin does raise a couple good points about the service functionality: you need to pull up MobileMe on laptop to use the service (instead of perhaps another iPhone), movement updates aren't pushed, ringer volume impacts alert volume whether the phone is on vibrate or not, and there should be an option for controlling the phone in more nefarious ways like taking pictures. We're glad it all ended up well, but those moments of Lego bliss that Kevin and his friends missed out on are gone forever.

Here's an extremely easy way to enable tethering on your iPhone 3G and 3GS (even on AT&T!) by just visiting a site on your iPhone's Safari. No jailbreaking needed. Here's where you go:
http://help.benm.at/help.php
Then scroll down to the Tethering & Internet Settings, then choosing your country and provider. This works for both AT&T and T-Mobile, and will let you install the appropriate configuration.
Now go to your settings and enable tethering. Check the video walkthrough above to help you configure tethering.
We've been testing this for about a day and it's been working quite well. Just be careful though, that AT&T doesn't officially sponsor this and might charge you extra for using tethering while you're not supposed to. So, keep an eye out so you're not shafted at the end of the month.
And if this disables visual voicemail on your phone, just go and reset your network settings, and it should be fixed.

Most iPhone games don't necessarily benefit from the speed boost granted by the 3GS outside of load times, because they were designed to run well on a 3G. That means that the most noticeable changes are found in games that run poorly on a 3G, like Namco Bandai's portable Katamari game, i Love Katamari. The difference is significant enough that Namco might as well have launched the first 3GS-only game six months before the release of the 3GS.
1UP's Jeremy Parish offers some hard numbers about the improvement in speed in the first part of his 3GS review, comparing the speed of the in-game clock on a 3G to one running on a 3GS. The clock still doesn't run in exactly real time, so this is a bit confusing, but for four minutes of game time on a 3G, over nine minutes elapsed. The same segment of the game passed in under six.
For another, less mathy comparison, check out the (slightly shaky) video after the break, which shows the game running on both phones.

In a recent blog post by GeoHotz, he has put up an image of what seems to be a new "exploit" he just discovered for the iPhone 3GS (yeah, 3GS!).
Clearly depicted in the pic is a modified version of iBoot, which means he has somehow bypassed the sig check on the iBoot 596.24, which is the new one for the 3GS. The project he seems to be working on is what he calls "Purplera1n" or "purple rain" instead. He's even put up the site for it at http://purplera1n.com/ though all it sports is a pic of him with the phone, getting wet in purple rain . . .

So in the last few days I have received countless messages of people asking why their downloaded .ispw doesn't work. I have also seen the same question asked on the forums in many many threads. The vast majority of the time it is because they used Safari to download the .ispw and Safari decided to go ahead and extract it.
If you are using Safari and want to download a .ispw follow this guide to change a setting and everything will be good.

The NY Times has a story on the culture of secrecy at Apple (registration possibly required). Secrecy is not just the prevailing communications strategy; it is baked into the corporate culture that had its origin in the release of the first Macintosh. 'It really started around trying to keep the surprise aspect to product launches, which can have a lot of power,' says marketing veteran Regis McKenna who advised Apple in its early days. Today few companies are more secretive than Apple, or as punitive to those who dare violate the company's rules on keeping tight control over information. Employees have been fired for leaking news tidbits to outsiders, and the company has been known to spread disinformation about product plans to its own workers and sue bloggers who cover the company. Apple's decision to severely limit communication with the news media, shareholders, and the public is at odds with the approach taken by many other companies, and many experts agree that the secrecy that adds surprise and excitement to Apple product announcements is not serving the company well in corporate governance. Some say that recent reports that Steve Jobs may have had a liver transplant, still not confirmed by the company, now makes one of Apple's assertions from January — that Jobs was suffering only from a hormonal imbalance — seem like a deliberate untruth.

The last time we heard from Ivan Seidenberg, he was letting Sprint know precisely what he thought of it. This go 'round, in a new 'Charlie Rose' interview, the Verizon chief is being entirely more coy. In speaking to recent political happenings, he mentions that the communication coming from the citizens of Iran is "a great thing," and he also notes that attempts to block internet use "can't work long term" as the "power of the people will override that without any question." Sort of comical given VZW's prior persistence to cripple phones in spite of consumer backlash, but we digress. He also dodged (with great skill, might we add) questions on whether Verizon Wireless would carry the iPhone, noting that it was "Apple's decision" on whether it would build one to support the company's forthcoming LTE network. As for Android? He did confess that recent reports of a Motorola handset coming its way "might be true," which is CEO speak for "oh, that's absolutely happening." Hop on past the break for a video of the whole shakedown.

We reported on Monday that popular (and brilliant) Firemint title Flight Control had passed the 1m download mark on the Apple App Store – impressive enough, but it seems that the game wasn’t actually the first to reach the seven-figure milestone.
Developer Freeverse is claiming that its title Flick Fishing was the first paid-for app to reach the 1m sales mark – most likely doing so just hours ahead of its aeronautical rival.
Flick Fishing has recently received a 3.0 update that allows gamers to connect with friends on a peer-to-peer network and also allows for a number of new digital items to be bought in-game.
“We couldn’t be happier that so many people decided to put on their virtual fishing cap and give Flick Fishing a try,” Freeverse president and co-founder Ian Lynch Smith stated.
“We’re very proud that over one million players have discovered that Flick Fishing is a great way to enjoy summer fun on your iPhone without the pesky flies and mosquitoes.”

So says iSuppli, which has completed a teardown of Apple's device.
The entry-level 16GB version of theiPhone 3G S carries a Bill Of Materials (BOM) cost of $172.46 and a manufacturing expense of $6.50, for a total of $178.96.
That's slightly higher than iSuppli’s estimate of $174.33 for the original low-end 8GB iPhone 3G, based on pricing in July 2008.
Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst, teardown services at iSuppli, said: “Although the retail price of the 16GB iPhone 3G S is $199, the same as for the 8GB version of the original iPhone 3G, the actual price of the phone paid by the service provider is considerably higher, reflecting the common wireless industry practice of subsidising the upfront cost of a mobile phone and then making a profit on subscriptions.
“From a component and design perspective, there’s also a great deal of similarity between the 3G and the 3G S. By leveraging this commonality to optimise materials costs, and taking advantage of price erosion in the electronic component marketplace, Apple can provide a higher-performing product with more memory and features at only a slightly higher materials and manufacturing cost.”

News from Zodttd:
For those who have an iPhone 3GS, you’re probably aware of how much faster this model runs over all previous Apple handheld devices. This is evident in my YouTube video posted in my previous newsbit of gpSPhone running on the 3GS.
I now have psx4iphone running very speedy on the 3GS. It’s at the point where Final Fantasy 7 is fullspeed at very least without sound. The build is rough around the edges, as you can’t switch games without restarting the emulator, and only memory card saves are currently working, no save states just yet. Both these issues are being worked on.
So how would you like to run psx4iphone on your 3GS right now, even without a jailbreak? Well you can! I can make a build for a limited number of people. In order to run this build you will need a tool like DiskAid for PC & Mac to place games & bios, that you must supply yourself, in a publicly writable directory. It’s simple drag & drop.
Still up for it? Since I have only a limited number of slots to fill to send out this build, it will currently cost $10 and you must email me your 40 character device ID (UUID/UDID) as provided within iTunes. Send the email with your UUID to zodttd@zodttd.com and I will respond as quickly as possible with instructions for payment. Then I will send you instructions to download and run psx4iphone on your iPhone 3GS.
Remember, email me first with your UUID and I will send you payment instructions, and keep in mind I do NOT supply games or the bios.
For those too timid to jump into that or just want to see it in action, I will be making some YouTube videos of psx4iphone on the iPhone 3GS today. Keep posted!
This is definitely awesome. Thanks.
ZodTTD
EDIT:
The first in a series of videos. This was quickly made so the production quality is low.

A final iPhone 3GS jailbreak hasn't been released yet, but that isn't stopping enterprising hackers from trying to get at all that extra horsepower, and one of the first notable hacks we've seen are these PlayStation 1 and Game Boy Advance emulator ports. The revved up hardware in Apple's latest is apparently capable of running either of these at 150 - 225fps with zero frameskipping, which is pretty impressive. Of course, we'll be way more impressed when the Dev Team releases a 3GS jailbreak and we can hit these up ourselves, but in the meantime there are plenty of videos to with which to while away the time at the read link.

A million downloads, impressive. Even more so when you consider that fewer than 30 applications were available for download from the App Catalog to a single device (the Pre) available only on the number 3 carrier (Sprint) in the US. Unfortunately, Palm's not offering any official numbers -- the figure comes via industry analysts who suggest 150,000 Pre devices shipped since the June 6th retail introduction for an average of about seven apps downloaded per phone. Imagine the numbers had Palm's SDK been ready prior to launch.

You might be confused as to why we just posted a YouTube clip from the 2007 PSN hit flOw at the top of this very story. See, friends, that's not actually flOw -- it's an iPhone game from developer Ketara Software titled Aquatica: The Underwater Adventure, and it's the biggest ripoff we've seen since the harrowing 2007 adventure title (and Game of the Year contender) Limbo of the Lost.
Thatgamecompany's Jenova Chen, who released the code for the Flash version of flOw shortly after its release, responded to the app by tweeting, "I released flOw source for people to learn. I didn't expect to see it on iphone without quoting the creator." In the comments on the YouTube clip above, Ketara responded to Chen's claims by explaining, "actually, all the source code is completely, 100% written from scratch," informing him that, "in general, most games within each class are practically the same, just different graphics." (Psst -- your graphics aren't different, Ketara!)
As more and more commenters harangued the small developer for apparently copying the PSN title, Ketara began damage control -- first by apologizing to Chen and the gaming community, by adding attribution to the video and app description, then ultimately by pulling the game off the App Store altogether. Ketara promises that "nothing like this" will happen again, so we probably won't be seeing Petals: The Flying Floral Adventure any time soon

If there's one thing we can decisively say about iPhone users -- and everyone else, for that matter -- it's that they shouldn't see naked people, even if they want to. Ever. Apple agrees, and it turns out that they were responsible for the removal of the Hottest Girls app after all, contrary to a statement by its developer that the app had tapped out his server which supposedly forced him to ask Apple to pull it while he ramped up capacity. Apple released a statement today confirming this, but here's where it gets interesting: the company says that "the developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed" -- in other words, the guy pulled a bait-and-switch on Apple by serving different content to his app after it had been approved using more PG-rated content. Look, we're all for filling our iPhones with gigabytes upon gigabytes of stuff that would make us especially anxious to trigger the Remote Wipe feature if we were to misplace it, but we've got to admit -- the dude went about it the wrong way here, Apple caught him, the world keeps turning. Come on, it's not like you don't have thousands of naughty pics in a folder cleverly named "recipes" that you can just sync anyway

At least since the advent of the first camera phones, people have been wondering whether the cell phone would limit the opportunity for all kinds of other products, particularly portable electronics. Even the more pedestrian features of basic cell phones have been blamed for the declines in (or at least limiting the market for) pagers, Family Radio Service (FRS) radios, and even watches. And beyond portable electronics, cordless phones have also been in a state of decline for years as more consumers cut the cord.
But the iPhone 3GS has renewed the old debate for a number of reasons, including data that shows that iPhone users are disproportionately inclined to use their phone's advanced features and changes in the hardware and software that improve the digital camera, add video capture, and open the door to in-vehicle turn-by-turn navigation. TomTom, which has returrned to its roots by demonstrating navigation software for the third-party hardware of the original iPhone 3G, can now offer that software through Apple's App Store. So, will the iPhone shutter Canon, run Garmin off the road, or make Flip flop? Thankfully, for the sake of all wishing to avoid reading headlines containing these atrocious puns, not for the foreseeable future, at least in the U.S.

Palm had its quarterly results conference call yesterday and although CEO Jon Rubinstein and CFO Doug Jeffries kept a pretty tight lid on the future product talk, they did say that licensing webOS to third parties isn't "a religious issue for us." That's pretty vague, sure, but we can't help but immediately think back to the golden age of Palm OS, when licensees like Sony put out amazing devices like the Clie PEG-NZ90 that we've lovingly mocked up with a webOS screenshot above -- we're sure Palm's upcoming handsets will be interesting in their own right, but we'd love to see a manufacturer like HTC riff on webOS the way it's tweaking Android. Of course, Jeffries also said Palm has "no plans at this time to even talk about" licensing, so this is all just a pipe dream for now, but let's not ruin the moment, okay? Hit the read link for the full call transcript.

For that $700 price quoted above you were probably hoping for some sort of impossibly small and stylish pico projector, able to consume your iPhone, beam its contents onto the nearest flat surface, and make everyone nearby say "Ooh." Sadly the truth is not quite so charming, with Lancer Corporation's iJector looking to be smallish but not particularly svelte -- or stylish, for that matter. It sports the ubiquitous iPod dock on top that will accept a suite of Apple devices ranging from Gen 1 iPod nanos to iPhones running OS 3.0, and also has video input and output so that it can work with non-Apple devices, beaming a maximum 50-inch image at a disappointing 557 x 234 resolution. Did we mention that, at Ą64,800, it's nearly $700? It is, and it's shipping to Japan next month if for some reason you're still interested.

nd so it continues. Geohot has returned with some help from hacking buddies chronic, posixninja, and pod2g with news that the same "24kpwn" exploit used to cracked open the iPod touch 2G will work on the iPhone 3GS. That means a jailbreak and unlock can be launched just as soon as the existing tools are updated for the iPhone 3GS (which won't be long). As George Hotz laments,
On a personal note, I'm sad. Apple, it took me a week to break through your new defenses. And to let us reuse an exploit like that; 24kpwn was so 5 months ago. Although I imagine it must have been painful watching the devices roll by on the assembly line, knowing they all had a hole in them and you couldn't fix it.
Oh George.

Java-based development within a specialized, optimized virtual machine is one of the founding principles of the platform that makes Android what it is -- but sometimes, you need a little more oomph and you've got to bend the rules to make that happen. Google's totally cool with that, it turns out, and today they've released the Android 1.5 Native Development Kit (NDK) that allows developers to generate C and C++ libraries that run directly on the platform rather than being routed through Dalvik. The Android team pulls no punches that devs should be careful when going native, saying "your application will be more complicated, have reduced compatibility, have no access to framework APIs, and be harder to debug" -- but as they note, there'll be times when the improved performance and deeper access to hardware will be a boon. As with HTC's Sense, it'll be interesting to see how this affects the platform going forward.

Right after its launch, we noted the sundry problems reported by new iPhone 3GS owners, but this is the first time we've heard tell of this specific one... and it seems like a doozy. It's unclear exactly what caused this, but what is apparent is an unattractive discoloration on the above handset. The user claims it was caused by overheating during a period of using the GPS and 3G of the phone. Either way, it looks pretty crummy now, doesn't it? What about the rest of you with new, white iPhones? Anything to report? One more shot of this looker after the break.

Dead or Alive developer Tecmo has announced the launch of three new iPhone and iPod Touch games: Annie's Wild Shot, Rio BlackJack and Girls of DOA BlackJack: The Kasumi version.
Annie's Wild Shot is a 2D on-rails shooter set in the Wild West. You are "tomboy" heroine Annie and those dusty streets need cleaning. Annie's Wild Shot costs 59 pence until 9th July, after which the price settles at GBP 2.39. Looks fun.
Rio BlackJack and Girls of DOA BlackJack: The Kasumi Version are gambling card-games with girls in. Girls with not many items of clothing on, who are lounging languidly on beaches dressed in school clothes and other provocative ensembles.
Rio BlackJack and Girls of DOA BlackJack: The Kasumi version cost GBP 2.39 each.

Palm has done its darnedest to keep the riffraff away from webOS development while it finishes up its Mojo SDK for webOS development, but the floodgates have finally opened with an opportune leak of Mojo to Torrent-vill. Naturally, Palm will still be locking out unapproved developers from releasing their creations to the App Catalog for the time being, but this should hopefully give the everyman a chance to hone apps in anticipation of a day of approval -- and should really beef up the homebrew community in the meantime. The other good news is that Palm is actually adding developers to its "early access program" at a fairly rapid pace, announcing that it doubled its membership this week, and plans to double it again next week. It's all coming together.

From the release page:
Fudroyd is a Gameboy emulator written in C for Android devices. It's a port of an emulator I originally wrote for Windows but never released (a SEGA 32X version exists, though it was rewritten entirely in SuperH assembly language).
The main difference between this port and the Windows version is that the Android version uses SDL, whereas the Windows version used GDI.

BT Broadband customers and O2 iPhone owners, rejoice -- some 2,500 ATM machines near you will soon be converted to serve as free WiFi hotspots, courtesy of BT Openzone and Cashbox, perhaps the most mismatched pair of commercial metaphors ever put together. The initial rollout starts with 10 machines this week and numbers are expected to steadily increase. Non-BT users and iPhone heretics wanting to join in the fun will have to shell out Ł5.88 ($10) for 90 minutes or a more reasonable Ł9.79 ($16) for 24 hours.

Though the jailbroken iPhones does NOT need Push notification, it can still be pretty much useful (and fancy!) in some cases and maybe will even bring new kind of apps on Cydia soon.
KennyTM (the same guy who created GRiP, Growl for iPhone) has developed a small extension to MobileSubstrate - called FakePushNotification - that lets developers add push notification to their apps using some simple code. To install the extension, simply get it off the googlecode page and the files in following directories using SSH.

NES v3 emulates the hardware in a Nintendo entertainment system, allowing you to play ROM images on your iPhone. NES v3 was a complete rewrite of this popular emulator for iPhoneOS v3.0 (although it should also run on v2.x). There are many public domain, home-brew games available which have been written for the Nintendo platform, and depending on your country of origin, you may be entitled to play images of commercial games which you rightfully own.
The author does not condone the illegal piracy of copyrighted Nintendo games, and provides no support in obtaining or using pirated images.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of games written for the Nintendo Entertainment System platform. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge, or compiled code from a public domain / home-brew game. In some cases, and based on your location, you may be legally entitled to posess a ROM image of a game that you presently own. *
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Light Gun "Tap": Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
Landscape and Portrait Modes: Just tilt the iPhone
... and many more

If you're one of the hapless folks out there still having trouble tracking down a new iPhone 3GS, Apple is making things a little bit easier on you with an online tool to check up on stock at Apple retail stores. There's a full breakdown of color and capacity, which might seem like overkill to some, but given the fact that stores with stock in all four current models are a bit of an exception (outside of NYC, anyways), we'd have to say that this is just the sort of overkill we need.

If you want to get an idea of just how fast technology moves, a brilliant piece from the BBC should help light the way. The setup is simple enough: 13-year-old Scott Campbell is given a Walkman and told by his dad that it was "the iPod of his day" -- and that's when the fun begins. Having never used or even seen the device, the young man proceeds to experience the kind of equilibrium-destroying confusion which we can only imagine the elderly first felt when attempting to set a VCR timer (you do remember what VCRs are, right?). We've collected a few of the choicest bits from the teen's observations, but we highly suggest you read the full article... you won't be sorry. Our favorite picks (direct quotes):
When I wore it walking down the street or going into shops, I got strange looks, a mixture of surprise and curiosity, that made me a little embarrassed.
It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette.
I managed to create an impromptu shuffle feature simply by holding down "rewind" and releasing it randomly - effective, if a little laboured.
When playing, it is clearly evident that the music sounds significantly different than when played on an MP3 player, mainly because of the hissy backtrack and odd warbly noises on the Walkman.

The European Commission is confident that all major cellphone companies have reached an agreement on a standard cellphone charger for consumers within the EU. 'People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone,' said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen. Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments have all signed the agreement.

Way back in the heady days of 2007, there was an iPhone without 3G data (hard to believe, we know, but trust us -- we were there). This iPhone, though revolutionary in some ways, was marred by the love-hate relationship its users suffered for missing out on some very basic features that they'd grown used to on mobiles of yore. One of those missing features, of course, was MMS -- and now, some two years later, here we are with a truly integrated MMS experience courtesy of the all-powerful hacking community. Granted, there have been MMS apps available for ages, but there's a difference: this is the same action 3G and 3GS owners are getting in conjunction with OS 3.0, which Apple curiously decided to hold back from original iPhone owners. As you might imagine, getting this going on your own phone is marginally more complicated than downloading from the App Store, so here's the question, you non-upgraders: just how badly do you want it?

Trials developer RedLynx has released iPhone and iPod Touch game DrawRace, which costs only 59 pence on the App Store.
It's a racing game, but not one that requires steering. Rather, a race-line is drawn onto a course map that a car follows in real time, going faster or slower depending on the line.
There's online multiplayer, hot-seat multiplayer and uploaded scores to beat - either in global or national leagues.

If there's one thing that's less mysterious than actual prestidigitation, it's prestidigitation that requires the use of an iPhone. But street magician and extreme thing doer David Blaine is hoping you'll forget that for long enough to drop $1.99 on his new iPhone collaboration with Partners 1993, which let's your replicate his "See A Card" trick.
Perhaps Blaine is thinking that his name and the promise of being like him will be enough to move digital units. See, through years of intense training, Blaine has managed to exceed human limitations in many areas, such as holding one's breath or deluding one's self.

The 1.0.4 update for the Palm Pre just got released, but along with patching some security holes, kills the homebrew ability that made everyone so excited.
Why, Palm, when your SDK isn't available until late summer, would you go and patch the homebrew? At the very least, developers have the leaked SDK to work off of, even if it's not final.

Of all the potential challengers to Apple's phenomenally popular iPhone, perhaps the one with the best prospects is Google's Android, which is not a mobile phone per se, but rather an open-source platform that the company encourages phone manufacturers to deploy in their own products. Similarly, Google encourages computer programmers to develop applications for the Android environment. But learning how to create such applications is daunting to the uninitiated, particularly for developers who have never before worked with the user interface controls, Web services, and other resources involved. A recently published book, Unlocking Android, is designed to help such developers.

Having the Palm Pre on Sprint might be good for Americans driving their pick 'em up trucks down the CDMA data highway, but it doesn't do Europeans (or Palm's bottom line) any good over in the Old World. Now we've got video and images of a GSM-loving Palm Pre on the loose in Vietnam. Why 'Nam? Easy, as workers gain more rights and higher wages in China, manufacturers of all our fancy consumer electronics are heading further south in search of cheap labor. While this doesn't mean a damn thing regarding launch, it's still good to see a functioning GSM Pre in the wild on the way to launch sometime before the end of the year, possibly sooner. Video after the break, as the saying goes.

We'll see plenty of "Pre sells X units in Y amount of time; not as many as iPhone" stories in the next year—in fact, we already have. That may be the wrong way to look at it.
Charter Equity Research is now saying that Palm has pushed over 300k Pres into sales channels in June alone, setting them on a pace to sell a million units in the first quarter. Set in the context of the iPhone 3G and 3GS's million-in-a-weekend sales pace, this doesn't sound like a ton. Set in the more meaningful context of Palm's sales last quarter, it's huge. As John Paczkowski points out, the company sold just 351,000 phones total in the quarter preceding the launch of the Pre.
Palm may be waiting to release official numbers until supply issues are sorted out and they can claim a more flattering number, but this right here? Pretty impressive. If there was any lingering doubt that a single phone could salvage this ailing company (and assuming these numbers are right), it's gone now.

Pocket web gadget said to be slightly larger than Apple's iPhone, but without the cellular connectivity.
The Wall Street Journal says computing giant Dell is working on an Android-powered mobile web device that could go on sale later this year.
The article cites sources familiar with the project, who also point out that the device may also never see the light of day.
It's about as vague a rumour as you can get really.
The device is described as being slightly larger than the iPhone and built around ARM chip designs, though it does not have cellular connectivity.

Publisher ngmoco has reversed its decision to remove Rolando from the iTunes App Store so that Rolando 2 could launch without any competition from the original.
"We did not intend to deprive you of the ability to re-download or update our games," the company told Offworld in a statement. "Rather, we had wanted to learn how well Rolando 2 would do at launch without the competition generated by its predecessor."
"The App Store is an entirely new animal, and we're always learning what it takes to deliver what you want."
Rolando 2: The Quest for the Golden Orchid will be a whole new game with four worlds, 36 levels and other unspecified additions. A third instalment will arrive in November, followed by some free downloadable extras.
We mention this as Rolando is brilliant, although initially rather similar to LocoRoco. Our Rolando review tells all.

Since Apple released it's first iPod, they've been using a 30 Pin Dock Connector to manage charging and syncing options on devices such as iPods and even iPhones. Due to a recent agreement made, they might soon have a Micro-USB Port on the iPhone in place of or in addition to the traditional dock connector!
According to a latest report, Apple along with 10 other mobile phone companies agreed to make smartphone devices supporting Micro-USB for the European market. The main cause for this agreement was the need to reduce multiple number of cables being used by European customers for their electronic devices, mainly smartphones
The companies involved in the agreement account for around 90% market share in the smartphone market. These include Motorola, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments along with Apple to name a few.
