Not a huge surprise here, but Apple's just announced ITunes 10, complete with a brand new logo that finally ditches the CD. What is something of a surprise, however is the standout feature: Ping. That's Apple's take on a music-centered social network (think Last.fm), which will let you follow people (including artists), establish a "circle of friends," post comments, check out custom song and album charts, and even find over 17,000 concert listings. Developing....

Current iPod touch wasn't thin enough for you? Look no further than... well, the new iPod touch just announced today. Naturally, Apple has re-upped its "iPhone without the phone" to include the Retina Display from the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game Center, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it's also got a rear cam capable of HD video -- but you'll be paying a bit more than you will for that cute little nano: $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB (yep, 16GB and 128GB are both no-shows). Ships next week, pre-orders start today.

Apple has just revealed its 6th generation iPod nano, which has been outfitted with just about the boldest redesign the portable media player has experienced yet. Gone is the clickwheel, to be replaced with a touchscreen interface and a shuffle-esque square form factor. It's now 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter. Hard volume buttons on the side and a clip on the back provide the minimal hardware accouterments to that multitouch touchscreen, while the inside provides enough juice for 24 hours of audio playback. Seven total color options will be up for grabs, including a Product RED option, with prices set at $149 for 8GB of storage or $179 for 16GB and pre-orders being taken today.

During the ongoing Apple event today, Steve Jobs touted that iPod Touch outsells Nintendo's and Sony's handhelds combined and revealed a new version of the device that's on par with the iPhone 4. The new iPod Touch has all the gaming capabilities of the phone, without the AT&T contract: iOS 4.1 with Game Center is a big deal, and Apple's crammed an A4 chip into the new iPod Touch and a 3-axis gyroscope, plus upgraded the screen with Retina Display. The redesign even features a front-facing camera.
The new iPod Touch will be available next week in an 8GB model for $229, a 32 GB model for $299 and a 64GB model for $399. You can pre-order it now.

Apple's Keynote just brought news that Game Center is (finally!) coming to iPhones in iOS 4.1. It bears the new, greener look we saw back in July and, as Steve Jobs noted, has a heavy focus on multiplayer. Beyond playing games with friends, there are matchmaking and leaderboards across multiple games; it's more or less Steam for your phone.
Jobs says iOS 4.1 - and thusly, Game Center -- will be arriving "next week," though it won't be arriving on iPad until iOS 4.2 in November. We'll be getting our Canabalt scores as high as possible before next week.

Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple's redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video from your computer to your i-device over WiFi. Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print Center applet that sits in the dock and lets you manage your print jobs. It might not be sexy, but it's certainly a welcome addition to iOS. Apple will be launching iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices in November.

Apple's just announced iOS 4.1 boasting a number bug fixes and some pretty notable additions. Those fixes include remedies for the proximity sensor issue, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance, while the new features include High Dynamic Range photos, HD video uploads over WiFi, TV show rentals and, at long last, Game Center. That latter bit is pretty much what we've been seeing all along, and boasts a range of new capabilities for multiplayer gaming, including the ability to challenge friends, keep track of scores, and new ways to find games -- of which there will be some pretty interesting new ones that take advantage of the added capabilties. Look for the update to hit iTunes sometime next week as a free download for your iPhone or iPod touch.

Mobile game multiplayer tech-maker Aurora Feint has unveiled a new cross-platform service known as OpenFeint Playtime, which will allow real-time online play between users of Apple's iOS and Android-based devices.
The service, which will also feature real-time voice chat, follows hot on the heels of Apple's confirmation that its Game Center will launch alongside its new range of hardware next week.
The new system also fleshes out Aurora Feint's hints about further cross-platform development last month.
"The most successful games have one thing in common: they bring people together. Whether a simple board game or a stunning 3D console game, games are always better when shared with family or friends," said Aurora Feint CEO Jason Citron.
"Traditionally, multiplayer technology has been accessible only to top tier developers. It's just too complicated and time consuming. So we invented PlayTime, which literally takes one day to integrate into a casual game."
The PlayTime SDK promises features such as achievements, leaderboards, lobbies and matchmaking across both platforms.
On iOS, it is integrated and shares data with the new Game Center, with Aurora Feint also claiming that players who drop out of games due to service or signal loss will be replaced with an AI substitute.
The service is expected to launch later this year, when OpenFeint updates to version 3.0.

Samsung may be one of the big players that Microsoft is pinning its hopes on for Windows Phone 7, but you wouldn't know that from listening to the company at IFA. Speaking to Reuters at the show, Samsung's head of marketing for its mobile division, YH Lee, said flatly that "we are prioritizing our Android platform," adding that, "Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it." Lee further went on to note that the company will continue to focus on its own Bada platform (at least outside of North America), but seemingly downplayed Windows Phone 7 when asked about it, saying only that "there is still some professional, specialized demand there." Ouch. Oh, and in case you're wondering, Samsung also says it's "not seeing visible demand for Symbian."

[Sk3tch] rigged up a way to use an original NES controller with Android. He bought the controller and a breakout board for it at DEFCON. By combining the controller, an Arduino, and a blueSMIRF BlueTooth module the controller can be used as a keyboard on his Android device. In the video after the break he demonstrates pairing the devices and playing Super Mario Bros. 3 in an emulator.
He calls this Alpha quality but it certainly looks like it works well. In the beta version we’d love to see all of the extra electronics inside the controller case like those USB mods.

Wouldn't it be nicer if you could switch your phone to Silent profile with just a press of a button, instead of going through the menu? With SilentKey by PhonePhreak Software, you can now silence your phone by just holding down the Red key (and then return to the normal profile the same way). SilentKey preserves the standard behaviour of the Red key during normal use (short keypress) unchanged. It merely adds a new functionality for holding down the key (long keypress).

ViewSonic has unveiled a new ten-inch tablet, which it claims is the first to run dual operating systems.
The ViewPad 100 incorporates a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium, as well as Google Android 1.6, supposedly making it the only dual-boot tablet.
Users can quickly check emails or browse the web with Google’s operating system, while also enjoying some of the upsides of a Windows PC, such as USB connectivity, video output, Adobe Flash support and the ability to create presentations and word documents.
Other features of the ViewPad 100 include a 16GB SSD, an Intel Atom N455 1.66Ghz processor with 1GB DDR3 RAM, a ten-inch capacitive multi-touch LED display, wi-fi and bluetooth connections, Micro SD slot, assisted GPS and built-in webcam.
ViewSonic is also showing the ViewPad 7 for the first time in Europe at IFA. It is a seven-inch Android tablet with a slew of features including 3G and wi-fi connectivity, front and back-facing cameras and USB connectivity.

Ryan Lawler writes on GigaOm that although many have touted the availability of Flash on Android devices as a competitive advantage over Apple's mobile devices, while trying to watch videos from ABC.com, Fox.com and Metacafe using Flash 10.1 on a Nexus One over a local Wi-Fi network connected to a 25-Mbps Verizon FiOS broadband connection, mobile expert Kevin Tofel found that videos were slow to load, if they loaded at all, leading to an overall very inconsistent experience while using his Android device for video. 'While in theory Flash video might be a competitive advantage for Android users, in practice it's difficult to imagine anyone actually trying to watch non-optimized web video on an Android handset,' writes Lawler. 'All of which makes one believe that maybe Steve Jobs was right to eschew Flash in lieu of HTML5 on the iPhone and iPad.'"

According to Apple's UK website, iOS 4.1 will hit on Wednesday, September 8th. The US website still displays the non-commital "Coming Soon" message, so we'll have to keep our eyes peeled. We're going to go ahead and guess that all those shiny new iPods will come to retail that day too... but don't hold us to that one. Like we said, it's only a guess.

While it's far from the most practical of ideas, people just can't seem to stop trying to make their iPhones more SLR-like. Joining that illustrious group is one Aniebres who, typos aside, has built one of the most impressive contraptions to date. We're still waiting to see what the end results look like, but the hardware side of things looks to be surprisingly solid, with the iPhone 4 slotting in with a satisfying click, while the entire lens mechanism has been shifted over to line up with the iPhone's camera (and make room for an Apple sticker).

Honestly, from this distance it's hard to tell what's going on, but 9 to 5 Mac says we're looking at a next-gen camera-equipped iPad fielded specifically to test video calls. As you may recall, iPhone software surfaced with a very similar menu just weeks before the iPhone 4 came out, which either means someone was inspired to create a clever 'shop, or that we just got our first real glimpse at iProd 4,1. Oh, and Mr. Extreme Closeup? He's our friend Blurrycam's old college roommate, didn't you know?

It's terribly difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary drastically depending upon whom you ask, but if you're inclined to believe that Android is mopping up Apple and RIM's declining mobile mindshare in the US, you'll find nothing but corroboration from Quantcast. The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google's OS, though it's important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don't include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here -- these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps -- and since we're on a roll with the disclaimers, let's just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company's financial success. Nokia can attest to that.

Remote-controlled helicopters are not new, but Parrot's AR.Drone Quadricopter is set to make a splash when it goes on sale on Sept. 9th. It will use an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as a controller, and give a live video feed from two different cameras to the pilot. Each model comes with two hulls, one of them for indoor use, with protective loops around the rotors. The device creates its own Wi-Fi network, which the iOS device connects to in order to control the Quadricopter.

For all the benefits of touchscreen keyboards, there are many who maintain a steadfast allegiance to the gods of tactile feedback. So how does this Mini Key case with sliding QWERTY for the iPhone 4 strike you? Unfortunately, the keys were a bit hard to press on the backlit prototype keypad handled by Engadget Spanish, and it links to the iPhone via Bluetooth, not the iPhone's dock connector (there's a cutout at the bottom for a cable to pass through). And no, all that added bulk still doesn't include an extended life battery pack. Perhaps some of this will change before it goes on sale before the end of the year for $60 / €60, we doubt it though.

Following Qualcomm, Samsung is also close to launching a new smartphone processor with two cores. Based on ARM architecture, the new Orion processor promises five times the graphics performance of current chips and to enable 1080p video recording and playback. Next year, it seems, dual-core smart phones will be all the rage. Apple, which is generally believed to have the most capable processor in the market today, may be under pressure to roll out a dual-core iPhone next year as well.

Thought that every iOS 4.1 device would be compatible with Apple's Game Center mobile and social gaming platform? We're sorry to say that's not the case. Initially it was looking like both the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch would be left out, having to take their copies of Kickety-Kick Ball Bounce Out and go home. But, Apple is now confirming that second-gen touch models will be included after all, however the iPhone 3G is still not invited, nor are first-gen iPhones and iPod touches. That means the final compatibility list includes the iPhone 3GS and 4, along with second, third, and fourth generation iPod touch models. Everybody else: you're out.

Anti-Theft from F-Secure is a freeware application that provides a great way to protect your phone if it gets lost or stolen. If you suspect your phone is missing you can remotely lock it or wipe the data so that your private text messages or pictures don't end up in the wrong hands. You can also locate your phone or the person holding it remotely.

Do you ever send sensitive data via SMS such as credit card numbers? Make it safe. SecretSMS encrypts regular text into cipher-text that can not be read without proper password. The recipient does not need to install any software on his phones, any kind of mobile can decrypt the message if the password is known.

Apple has extended an olive branch to its army of app developers by relaxing restrictions on how games are made.
The mobile devices giant says it is “relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps” – on the proviso that the resulting apps do not download any additional code.
“This should give developers the flexibility they want,” Apple said, “while preserving the security we need.”
Apple said it came to the decision to relax development restraints after “taking much feedback to heart”.
Specifics on the matter are for now unclear, though a brief statement from Apple implied that developers can build games with any tool they want – of which Flash and Android tools are suddenly possible, though surely unlikely, candidates.
Apple went one further in its developer serenade, promising to release a long-awaited App Store Review Guideline “to help developers understand how we review submitted apps”.
Said Apple: “We hope it will make us more transparent and help our developers create even more successful apps for the App Store.
“The App Store is perhaps the most important milestone in the history of mobile software. Working together with our developers, we will continue to surprise and delight our users with innovative mobile apps.”
Apple said it will specifically make changes to its Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9.

Google's mobile advertising boss says Apple's latest Developer Program Licence Agreement gives Google and AdMob the green light to continue serving ads into iOS apps.
A change to the terms earlier this year had seemed to lock AdMob out, due to being owned by a rival smartphone platform owner - Google.
Now everything's tickety-boo, according to Google's VP of product management Omar Hamoui.
"Unlike the previous version, these new terms ensure that Apple’s developers have the choice of a variety of advertising solutions (including Google’s and AdMob’s) to earn money and fund their apps," he blogs.
"This is great news for everyone in the mobile community, as we believe that a competitive environment is the best way to drive innovation and growth in mobile advertising."

Apple has released the 4.1 software update for its iPhone and iPod Touch range, bringing with it the long-awaited Game Center software.
Roughly analogous to Xbox Live, Game Center offers standardised multiplayer, matchmaking, achievements and friends lists to owners of Apple mobile hardware.
However, it is not available on iPhone 2G or 3G, or to the first generation iPod touch. Additionally, a promised iPad version is not due until an unspecified date in November.
Due to App Store approval times, few games supported Game Center at last night's launch, but there has been a slow trickle of updates – including Flight Control.
Titles planned to sport Game Center integration in the near future include perennial App Store top ten lurkers Angry Birds, Field Runners and Pac-Man.
The Game Center update prompted a rush to grab usernames, with each gamer registering and using a unique handle.

Okay, so we've given you about a day to download, install, and tear iOS 4.1 into microscopic shreds. What's the end result? We've been tipped on a handful of troublesome nuances in the update, ranging from unsolved proximity sensor woes to a sudden onslaught of voicemails -- and we're trying to get a feel for how widespread they all are. With a gold master OS, plenty of devices raring to show themselves, and a more or less obvious October launch window, it's clear that Windows Phone 7 is right around the corner. Pocket-lint is reporting today that its sources, "senior figures within the industry," are pegging October 11 as the special day, with a New York launch event to make it all official. The handsets will then be available later that month, according to one of those sources. It sounds like everybody is ready for Microsoft to start fighting back in the world of phones, the question is: are you?

So let's see, how long has iOS 4.1 been out in the open for public consumption? We make it less than 24 hours, yet already some earnest jail busters have managed to liberate it from Apple's control freak clutches. It's still a fair distance away from an easily executable jailbreak, but it's looking like it'll work on iPhone 4, the latest-gen iPod touch, and the iPad, covering all the freshest bases of Apple hardware. Now it's just a matter of waiting it out.

Apple has released its hitherto mysterious App Store approval guidelines to developers, as well relaxing its attitude to third party formats.
Despite fears that a cull might be looming, Apple will now allow games and applications created and exported with tools such as Unity and Adobe AIR. As long as the resultant Apps do not download any further code, they should in theory make it past the approval process.
While this means that developers may now use Adobe applications to export to iPhone from Flash, direct use of Flash itself on iPhone remains disallowed. It is nonetheless a significant step forward from Apple's previous, and very public, antipathy towards the format.
In similarly unexpected move from the iPhone creator, Apple has attempted to clearly spell out its thinking on the App Store approval process as a list of updated and tightened developer guidelines (available in full as a PDF here).
"Excessively objectionable or crude content" is out, as is any attempt to harvest information about users from their new Game Center IDs.
Apps must also be politically sensitive. "Enemies within the context of a game cannot solely target a specific race, culture, a real government or corporation, or any other real entity," reads the document.
Despite yesterday's release of GTA: China Town Wars HD, the depiction of realistic weapons in a context that encourages crime will also cause scowls amongst Apple's approval staff.
Perhaps most interestingly, the document suggests a clampdown on throwaway and duplicate titles. "We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn't do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be accepted."
The guide also discourages the use of the App Store as a training ground for new developers, which may limit the potential for breakout and viral hits.
"If your App looks like it was cobbled together in a few days, or you're trying to get your first practice App into the store to impress your friends, please brace yourself for rejection. We have lots of serious developers who don't want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour."
Apps labelled beta, demo and trial will be rejected, as will those with evident crash bugs or that do not offer the functionality suggested by the title.
Apple does offer a right of appeal for Apps that are deemed to contravene these tightened rules.

Android will be rivalling Symbian for smartphone market share by 2014, according to Gartner's latest predictions.
The analyst firm forecasts that in 2014, Symbian will have a 30.2% share of smartphone sales - 264.4 million units - ahead of Android's 29.6% (259.3m).
Gartner sees Apple's iOS in third place with a 14.9% market share (130.4m), followed by BlackBerry (11.7% - 102.6m) and Windows Phone (3.9% - 34.5m).
In 2014, Gartner predicts 875.6 million smartphone sales, up from 172.4 million in 2010.
This year, the company expects Symbian to take a 40.1% market share, followed by Android (17.7%), BlackBerry (17.5%), iOS (15.4%) and Windows Phone (4.7%).

Brad Linder of Liliputing posted an interesting analysis today about Google's reluctance to endorse Android for tablets. Linder argues that while there may be legitimate concern that Android just isn't polished enough for devices without phone access (because some apps need it), it would be smart for Google to segregate the apps themselves, so users can simply know which apps will work on Wi-Fi-only tablets. But from Google's perspective, he observes, "pushing a version of Android that isn't exclusively for phones could be all it takes for Chrome OS to be dead on arrival."

Back when Apple initially said it'd offer free iPhone 4 cases to assuage reception concerns, there was a September 30th deadline given for the program. After which, according to Steve and company during the post-press conference Q&A, Apple would "evaluate" the prolonged need for such an offer. Well, looks like the decision has been made. In a statement on its website, Apple has confirmed the free case program will be discontinued for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30th, and the return policy for the smartphone will return to normal, pre-antennagate rules. Evidently, said the statement, "we now know the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought." It had to end sometime, folks.

Dev tool makers are celebrating Apple's apparent about-face on the use of third party software for the creation of iPhone games.
Apple announced the relaxation of its much-criticised restrictions on middleware last night, together with new guidelines for developers seeking App Store approval.
the change means games made with the Unity engine or created in Adobe's Flash can be allowed on the mobile store, as long as they have been exported fully to iOS and do not require the downloading of any further code.
"At Unity we applaud this move by Apple," said Unity CEO David Helgason. "We are all about enabling people with the best tools imaginable so they can make awesome products.
"Apple has always been primarily focused on providing superior products to end users, and Unity games have indeed been continuously approved throughout the last months. However, we are very happy for all those devs who can now join the party."
Helgasson will go into more detail on the implications of Apple's about-face on the Unity blog later today.
Meanwhile, Adobe published a statement in response to what appears to be a ceasefire in Apple's cold war with the Flash format.
"Apple's announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe's Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring tool.
"This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases."
The legitimisation of Packager and similar conversion tools is expected to result in a new flood of submissions to the App Store -although the tightened approval rules will likely make limit the number that make it through.
"This is great news for developers and we're hearing from our developer community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App Store," added Adobe - highlighted that Apple devices would still refuse to run any Flash content that hadn't been exported to iOS format.

"The Mercury News reports that former hacker Jonathan Zdziarski has been tapped by law-enforcement agencies nationwide to teach them just how much information is stored in iPhones - and how to get it. 'These devices are people's companions today,' says Zdziarski. 'They're not mobile phones anymore. They organize people's lives. And if you're doing something criminal, something about it is probably going to go through that phone.' For example, every time an iPhone user closes out of the built-in mapping application, the phone snaps a screenshot and stores it. Savvy law-enforcement agents armed with search warrants can use those snapshots to see if a suspect is lying about whereabouts during a crime.

Time to get down and boogie if you think the Android fragmentation issue is overblown. Google has dropped its latest platform version stats and Android 2.2, aka Froyo, has managed to corner a healthy 28.7 percent of all active Googlephones (those that accessed the Market within the two weeks leading up to September 1), rapidly closing the gap on version 2.1 and nearly matching in number the handsets still stuck on the Cupcake or Donut diet. When you consider that back in May those pesky 1.5 and 1.6 versions were on a whopping 62 percent of Android mobiles, you'll probably agree that phone makers seem to be getting their act together in terms of delivering Google's latest wares in a timely fashion. Who'd have thought it, the more practice they have, the better they're getting at their jobs!

News/release from seleuco.nicator
iMAME4all is a iOS universal app done by David Valdeita (Seleuco), port of MAME 0.37b5 emulator by Nicola Salmoria & TEAM for all jailbroken iOS devices (iPad HD, iPhone 4G , iPod touch and older) and it is based on GP2X, WIZ MAME4ALL 2.5 by Franxis.
It emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.37b5 plus some additional games from newer MAME versions.
This version emulates over 2000 different romsets.
Please, try to understand that that with that amount of games, some will run better than others and some might not even run with iMAME4all. Please, don´t email me asking for a specific game to run.
Although the performance is very good with modern devices (all games I tested on iPad run practically perfect), owners of older devices should not expect a good performance; please turn off sound because that's very helpful.
After installing, place your MAME-titled zipped roms in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all/roms folder.
Please use "clrmame.dat" file included in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in next webpage:

Microsoft has already gone on record saying that Windows Phone 7 will be initially launching in just five languages, all with essentially the same easy character set -- English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish -- but they're undoubtedly champing at the bit to ramp that list up to a few more. In fact, the latest word on the street is that they're going to be cutting a bunch of corners on those additional tongues, presumably in an effort to get them on shelves sooner rather than later. Not a bad strategy, perhaps, but the rumored list of features on the chopping block is an ugly one: Xbox Live support, Zune functionality, and "limited" Windows Phone Marketplace capability, just to name a few, and only the browser and email views will actually support the native character sets; phone menus and keyboards will initially be in one of the "big five." As much as we'd like to see WP7 in as many places as possible right away, we'd have to say this is too great a sacrifice if true -- all the best stuff would be gone. Keep chugging, guys.

Palm first started telling us webOS 1.4.5 was coming "soon" back in May, but after an interminable wait it looks like Pre Pluses on Verizon and AT&T are starting to get an OTA update. The release notes page on Palm's site is currently down, but we're looking for better PDK support, some GPS fixes, and improved gaming action. We'll let you know as soon as we find out anything definite -- but for now, let us know how it's going on comments.

Epic Games is now set to add iOS support for its highly acclaimed Unreal Development Kit. Epic Citadel, a tech demo, has now been downloaded over a million times and demonstrates just what this development kit is capable of. Epic Games announced at the Korean Games Conference that independent iPhone developers will now be able to generate iOS applications using the Unreal Development Kit.
Apple recently announced that it would “relax” some of the restrictions that have made developing advanced games like Unreal overly difficult for some app developers. Proprietary API’s, like the one Epic Games has just announced, would have been automatically rejected by Apple’s App Store before now. Now that these restrictions have been lifted, developers will be able to more easily create advanced and visually-engrossing experiences for iOS devices.

Over the weekend, my colleague and fellow MMi staff writer Wiley John Wright covered the forthcoming conclusion of Apple's free iPhone 4 case program. As we've known for some time, the program in question will draw to a close in two weeks on September 30th. Understandably, however, all are not pleased with the decision by Apple to halt the case program.
In particular, the folks at Consumer Reports (who first ripped Apple to shreds in the wake of "Antennagate") are taking yet another strong stand against Apple and reiterating the publication's refusal to recommend the iPhone 4. Yesterday on its official blog, Consumer Reports once again condemned Apple's "less consumer-friendly" actions. That is, "Putting the onus on any owners of a product to obtain a remedy to a design flaw is not acceptable to us,

The number of gamers who enjoy mobile video games on their iOS device is skyrocketing, according to the findings of a new report. The International Gamers Survey from NewZoo indicates that better than half of the nearly 80 million Americans who play mobile games in the U.S. are now engaging in those mobile gaming activities on an iOS device.
In other words, there may be approximately 40 million iDevice mobile gamers lurking among us today. The data, which was collected from roughly 10,000 respondents in June, is probably now on the light side. Given that the iPhone 4 was just released this summer and has since sold like gangbusters around the world, the number of mobile iOS gamers is likely far higher than this survey suggests. Still, according to the findings presented, Nintendo DS and DSi gamers only total 41 million.

Electronic Arts is positioning its mobile business on the belief that Google’s Android format could rise above the competition. Speaking last night at the Deutsche Bank 2010 Technology Conference, EA CFO Eric Brown said “there's a lot to happen in the future” for the Android OS.
“We’re trying to position our mobile business to take advantage of that trend,” he continued, as quoted by Gamasutra.
“I think the next big positive wave to push better growth in mobile will be the deployment of an App Store equivalent for the Android operating system."
At the event Brown cited a paper from analyst group IDC, which claims that Android could own a 25 per cent of the mobile OS market within three years, compared to 11 per cent for Apple devices.
Electronic Arts has a reputation for being one of the first ‘traditional’ publishers to fully embrace the mobile games space, with a regular presence on Apple’s App Store.
According to reports, Brown also said his firm annually turns over $200 million from the mobile space.

First things first -- before you jump on past the break and mash play, mute your speakers. Mute. As in, off. Alrighty, now that you're prepared, you've got two minutes and 14 seconds of teasing just a click away, as some sure-to-be-yelled-at developer has leaked a sneak peak into the wide, mysterious world of webOS 2.0. Not that we haven't seen a cornucopia of screenshots already, but at least this emulation vid gives you a better idea of how things will actually flow once it gets released to end users. Oh, and as for those DropBox and MobileMe integration rumors? Looks like that's just QuickOffice being QuickOffice.

If you're an iOS developer (or good friends with one), today is going to be totally awesome. Apple has just let loose the official iOS 4.2 beta builds for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch -- meaning that someone somewhere is going to be experiencing multitasking on the 'pad (sans jailbreaking, of course). Additionally, Apple has decided to bestow a name upon its new printing experience (the direct-to-printer tech the company showed off at its fall event). And that name? AirPrint. In a piece of PR just issued by Apple (available to read after the break), it's noted that owners of HP products with ePrint tech will be the first to take advantage of the new tool -- so that's something.
Of course, all that news should be lost in a cloud of excitement over 4.2. As usual, we're going to take the OS for a spin on our developer iPad here and see what's what, and then report back to you cats and kittens about whatever nuggets of joy we find. Stay tuned

Apple announced the release of the first iOS 4.2 beta for iPhone, the iPad and the iPod touch today. The update - the first version of iOS 4 that can be run on all devices -includes the AirPrint wireless printing framework that was introduced at the 4G iPod touch rollout earlier this month. AirPrint, which lets iOS devices print over WiFi to compatible printers, will be available to all iOS devices when 4.2 is released in November. Apple also says that the upgrade will be free for all devices.
AirPrint, according to Apple's press release, "automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software." The framework requires printer manufacturers to build AirPrint support into their printers,.

That's right, its here folks. iOS 4.2 Beta has been released to Developers in the Apple center. This is great news for iPad owners, however it may also delay jailbreaking a little further, assuming that iOS 4.2 is right around the corner.
The new iOS update is expected to include a number of new features, including multitasking, folders, along with printing and the ability to use AirPlay via itunes with your iPad, juts like the Airport Express.
The update is currently available at developer.apple.com. I would imagine there are a ton more features that have yet to be uncovered, but it's great to see iOS 4 coming to the iPad. Stay tuned for updates
The official 4.2 update is slated for November. 2 months away

Coming this holiday season to a Windows Phone 7 phone near you: Twitter, Netflix, Flixster, OpenTable, and Travelocity apps. The adroit coders behind those slices of software have managed to put together enough eye candy for Microsoft to highlight them as part of its announcement that the WP7 developer tools have been finalized. It doesn't sound like anything dramatic has changed from the beta -- which seems fitting given how close to the actual launch we now are -- but a new Bing Maps Control SDK has been issued, allowing access to a cornucopia of map-related coding opportunities. We're sure you're just over the moon about that.

Talk about a buzz kill.
Effectively squeezing all the air out of Apple's mobile marketing lungs, Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz doesn't have high hopes for Apple - at least not in terms of the iAd platform. What's the reason for her belief that it will eventually fail miserably?
It's all about the control say's the Yahoo chief. And Apple's relentless desire for "control" will prove a big turn-off to advertisers. In other words, Bartz says Apple will bring down iAds itself. In an interview covered by Reuters, she reportedly said of iAds: "That's going to fall apart for them. Advertisers are not going to have that type of control over them. Apple wants total control over those ads."
Bartz concurs with the complaints that have surfaced elsewhere from advertisers who have worked with Apple on mobile advertising.

If you weren't already convinced that Apple is seriously easing back on some of its more annoying App Store restrictions with the appearance of titles like GV Voice (a Google Voice client), this news might help. After a wild ride of ping-pong approvals and pulls, Manomio's C64 emulator has reappeared in the Store with its BASIC interpreter fully intact, and available for your coding pleasure. We've tested the software and can confirm that you will indeed be able to revisit your youth (provided your youth took place in the early 80's) via the newsest version of the software. Of course, it's not super fun to program using the tiny, virtual C64 keyboard provided onscreen, but couple this with a Bluetooth keyboard of your choosing, and you can pretty much go wild. The emulator is available right this moment for $4.99, and obviously it's a free upgrade for those who've already bought in.

Crestron is a name synonymous with two things in the world of home automation: cost and quality. So it's always good to the see the company shed its proprietary nature and embrace an off-the-shelf consumer product. Take its new iPanel for example. Instead of dropping a few thousand dollars on a Crestron touch-panel that does just one thing, you can purchase this $500ish snap-on case with thirteen dedicated buttons for home, lights, guide, and info functions. In other words, for the half the price of a typical touchscreen Crestron touchscreen controller you also get a WiFi-connected iPad. Sounds like a winning combination to us. Look for the iPanel to get official at CEDIA next week.

Remember the mysterious reference to iProd 2,1 that appeared in the iPad's code? We thought it might be a new CDMA or camera-equipped iPad, but it just might have been the new iOS-based Apple TV instead. Diving through the iOS 4.2 beta, a TUAW tipster allegedly uncovered the above key, which hints that we might have been right about the device's app potential all along. Though Apple may rely on a simpler media streaming UI for the home theater to enhance accessibility and ease of use, there's always the chance the community might jailbreak the $99 set-top box to do far greater things.

It would seem the latest iPod nano models have a secret diagnostic screen dubbed “iTerm.” This screen allows users to test various features of the iPod nano, such as: the power, audio, remote, TV Out, LCD, IO, FM receiver, memory, the touch panel and accelerometer. You navigate this screen using the Sleep/Wake and Volume buttons.
There is also a Disk Mode that when activated allows the nano to appear as an external USB disk when connected to a computer. You’ll know you are in Disk Mode when the nano’s screen turns from its usual color to a retro-looking black and white screen reminiscent of earlier-model iPods.

It's a rather unfortunate piece of news for AppStore developers, as a group of hackers have discovered an exploit that will allow a user to install cracked apps without the use of a "rooted" iDevice.
The group, iModZone, has created an App which goes by the name of IPA God, and claims that they have successfully been able to install these "cracked/beta" apps via their program. This potentially leads to a large amount of loss in sales for developers that work extremely hard to produce quality apps, which is a huge discouragement for any developer.
The hackers posted a video that demonstrates the process, but it's not really 100%, as we have no idea what Firmware they are running except for their claims. I'm also a little confused as to how they even got the installer on the iPad.

Now that Apple is able to keep up with demand for the iPad, they are offering Certified Refurbished models at the Apple Online Store. This is the first time iPads have been made available at a discounted price. Apple’s supply of iPads has increased dramatically of late, as new orders now ship within 24 hours. Also, Best Buy is set to expand iPad sales to all of their stores by September 26. As I recently reported, Target stores are also rumored to be carrying the iPad in the near future.
Apple is currently offering the Wi-Fi models at a $50 discount. The 16GB now sells for $449, the 32GB model for $549, and the 64 GB model for $649. All Apple certified refurbished products are covered by a 1-year warranty and include a new battery and outer shell.

Apple is working on a 'digital newsstand' to sell electronic magazines and newspapers to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users, according to a Bloomberg report.
It claims that iPad would be the focus for the new store, which would do for newspapers and magazines what iBooks has done for books.
What's more, the report suggests that the new store will tie into subscriptions for these publications - plans for which were rumoured last week.
While it could launch this year, Bloomberg thinks Apple may delay the launch of such a store until its second-generation iPad is announced early next year.
Publishers aren't spilling details of the new store or commenting on the speculation, for now.
Many newspapers and magazines are already available for iOS devices, either through standalone apps on Apple's App Store, or via third-party services like Zinio.
An Apple digital newsstand would certainly be bad news for the latter company.

The Daily Mail has published an article claiming professional gangs of traders are buying up vast quantaties of the UK's iPhone 4 stock and shipping it abroad.
The tabloid claims this is "depriving ordinary customers of getting their hands on them."
Apparently, these hoards of 'runners' are paid around Ł70 for each un-contracted device they get their hands on, which they pay between Ł499 and Ł599 for.
It's tough to see how anyone is making much money on such a scheme by the time the devices are shipped to Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia – but The Mail claims international shortages will mean customers will pay Ł400 over the retail price.
Directly asserting that this supposed practice has caused the iPhone 4 shortage, the Mail goes on to explain the chaos as 'genuine' customers become frustrated they cannot buy one.
"Fights have been known to break out and some stores open much earlier than their advertised time of 9am in an attempt to reduce any crowd trouble."

In a pile of new Apple patent applications released today, one surprise stood out: Apple is working on an external transceiver that would turn an iPod touch - or any mobile device, from a media player to a game console - into a full-featured cellular phone. The patent, called "Accessory Transceiver for Mobile Devices," was highlighted by Patently Apple today. In addition to giving calling services to an iPod, the patent also details how the transceiver could be used to connect an iPhone to a different cellular network, specifically referencing a CDMA network like the one used by Verizon in the US.

The jailbreak community is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the latest iOS 4.1 jailbreak. Many are wondering, when will this software be ready, and is greenpois0n really helping things along? Chronic Dev-Team, the primary developers of jailbreaking software, have issued this statement regarding their progress:
“Many people in the comments are asking for a progress update. Any kind of update that we could actually give would be too technical for anyone to understand anyway, not to mention potentially reveal the exploit. Just know that things are going swimmingly and we are working as hard as we can.”
So there you have it. They’re working as hard as they can and it will be ready, when it’s ready. I for one would rather Chronic Dev-Team take their time and get all the bugs out before they release this beast into the wild.

Google's recent addition of ocean layer content and ocean bathymetry (which, we were shocked to discover, had nothing to do with bathing) meant that Android users finally got access to underwater locales on the Google Earth. No need to feel left out anymore, iOS users -- Google Earth 3.1 for iPod Touch, iPad and the iPhone is finally yours as well, with over a hundred pictures and videos and native support for the Retina display. Check out the App Store to get started

You've been asking and imploring, so Anssi Vanjoki -- straight shooter, that he is -- now has an answer. Why doesn't Nokia switch to Android? Because Google's software represents only a short-term solution that will lead to bigger quandaries down the line, says he. Anssi was even graceful enough to illustrate this point with a vivid example, saying that mobile manufacturers who go the Android route are doing no better than Finnish boys who "pee in their pants" for warmth in the winter. Yeah. We don't know where to go from here either. To be honest, there's a legitimate point behind this trash talk, as the FT notes some analysts agree with Anssi that relying on Android as the universal OS may lead to "permanently low profitability" with users failing to distinguish between different brands if they all offer the same experience. Then again, tell that to HTC.

The Dev-Team has just released a fresh beta version of redsn0w, version 0.9.6b1, which allows users to jailbreak the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.1 or 4.0.
The tool uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve all been using with redsn0w since the 2.x days. There is nothing new for Apple to patch from this update, it's simply still compatible.
For those that are getting excited, settle down: this does not include the SHAtter exploit that has been on everyones mind lately.
Quote:
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possible forever).
Currently redsn0w 0.9.6b1 is only available for Mac OSX, but a little birdie tells me that iH8sn0w may have the same thing up his sleeve for the same situation, but for Windows users.
Quote:
Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)
Learn more about the specifics at the Dev-Team's Official Blog. Also check out the Wiki if its not overloaded with traffic http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:rsbeta

Please use "clrmame.dat" file included in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in next webpage:
http://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/
Version 1.5: Added new retina skin and control layout (selectable). Added touch deadzone selector. Added Wii classic stick deadzone value selector (upper 4 controller going crazy). Added 8/16/auto color depth selector (8/auto bpp fix some games with missing sprites).

Mobile and social game publisher Gameloft has sold over 20 million of its paid-for titles on Apple's App Store since the service began in July 2008.
Of the company's 47 games, 42 of them made it into the top 5 selling list at some point, 25 of them reaching number one.
Big sellers for the publisher have included Let's Golf 1 and 2, Iron Man 2 and N.O.V.A., which launched exclusively for iPhone 4. Gameloft hopes to add another 15 games to its App Store catalogue by the end of the year, including adaptations of NFL, Assassin's Creed and Spider-Man.
"The first half of 2010 marks a new step for us on the App Store," said Gameloft president Michel Guillemot.
"The launch of the iPad and iPhone 4 has opened new horizons for developers and allowed us once again to transform our consumers gaming experience. 20 million paid downloads is proof that our games meet the expectations of our players and we will continue to satisfy them."
Recently, Gameloft announced that increased App Store sales had helped the company to increase its profits by 15 per cent, posting second quarter sales of €33.6 million (Ł28.5m).

News from Evil Dragon
We just got the update that testing results won't be there before Monday.
They have not enough testing cycles yet.
For me, this sounds good - as it means the current nubs haven't failed testing yet.
Don't take my word for that, we'll know for sure next week. However, if they had failed the test already, they wouldn't need more cycles
Fingers crossed

Looks like it's not just Apple fanboys that are going wild for the iPad: in Australia, virtually every state education department is trialling the tablet in schools — and some schools are even trialling it without the official support of their department. One university in Adelaide has even abolished textbooks for first year science students and is allocating free iPads to first year students instead. It will be interesting to see what happens when the inevitable wave of Android tablets hits over the next six months.

According to Jeffrey Fidacaro, an analyst with Susquehanna Financial Group, individuals within Apple's overseas supply chain report that the company will begin assembling its first round of CDMA iPhones in December. The suppliers in question tell Fidacaro that Apple could build as many as three million CDMA iPhones before January 1, 2011.
If such ambitious plans materialize, Apple Insider notes that total GSM and CDMA iPhone production for the quarter would come in at around 22 million. Fidacaro, however, predicts that Apple will sell just under 12 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal 2010. "We expect the September 25 launch of iPhone in China and Apple's target of making the iPhone available in 88 countries by month end to aid results in 4QFY10," he noted. "Our checks show that Apple is still struggling with yields on the mass production of the white iPhone 4."

Slashdotters have read extensively about the iPad pilot programs at colleges and universities: Australian schools are iPad crazy, we read yesterday, and thanks to the iPad's success, 2011 will be the year of the tablet. But on US college campuses almost half a year after the iPad's launch, it's a whole different story — at least so far this year. FoxNews.com reports that high-profile schools like Duke and Stanford are far more cautious about the device than has previously been reported. 'It definitely facilitates studying and recall because you don't get bogged down by all the paper,' noted first-year Stanford med student Ryan Flynn. But it's still a work in progress. 'The iPad isn't the best input device. Some people have gone back to paper and pencil.

That picture above is no joke -- that's where I ended up last night trying to revive my Droid X review unit. It was fun, in a hacky mad-scientist sort of way, but it's also really sad -- a testament to how Google approves Android device hacking with a wink and a nod, but doesn't provide any safety nets for its most passionate users.
Let's back up, though. How did I end up in such dire straits? It started when I had the nerve to update this Droid X to the leaked Android 2.2 build -- a simple process that involved installing the file on a microSD card and restarting. Unfortunately, since Motorola refuses to provide a sanctioned upgrade path from the leaked build to the official 2.2 build released earlier this week, I was forced to downgrade back to 2.1 to get back on track. Based on how easy the update was, this would be a piece of cake, right?

In a new patent, Apple has revealed plans for new devices without any buttons at all: using technologies like capacitive sensing, resistive sensing, and surface acoustic wave sensing, the device's case would respond to touch and hand gestures. "The touch sensing devices may for example be selected from touch panels, touch screens or touch sensitive housings," according to the patent, entitled "Hand held electronic device with multiple touch sensing devices". You'd be able to control an iPhone with the same hand you hold it in, and secure it to your unique hand print.

The newest member of the PS3 jailbreaking tool crowd is the iPod family. More specifically, iPods running the open source media firmware Rockbox. Even better news, theoretically it should be possible to use this same method on any MP3 player running the Rockbox software. Right now the exploit package only works on select generations of the iPod Nano and iPod Classic line, but if the trend set by the PSX-scene forums continues, it would be worth checking back in the near future if your device is not already supported. Thanks to [shuffle2] for providing the hack, and [DanAdamKOF] for the heads up.

Yesterday Nokia and AT&T announced a mobile software coding contest worth $10 million in prize money. The move is intended to help Symbian compete with Android and iOS. The day before this announcement, Sony Ericsson said it would not be making any new Symbian devices and is instead focusing on Android. That left Nokia pretty much alone with Symbian, and now it wants to find new coding 'friends' to keep the platform alive. Natural selection seems to be slowly eroding Symbian's future. Is this contest too late?"

It seems like Apple's legal team is constantly embroiled in a pitched battle of some sort, but this weekend they might get to relax -- citing recent iPhone policy changes, the European Commission's decided to stop breathing down their necks. Though the EU originally joined the US Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission in investigating why Cupertino chose to block third-party dev tools and ads earlier this year, the fact that Apple recently relaxed both restrictions (and created a repair program for iPhones purchased abroad) satisfied European regulators. "The Commission intends to close the investigations into these matters," it wrote earlier today. There's no guarantee that the US powers-that-be will exercise similar leniency, of course, but we wouldn't be surprised -- even inside Apple, the DoJ's got other fish to fry.

You could probably fill a book with Apple patent applications that never amounted to anything, but here's one that's at least been granted -- a "handheld device" that uses capacitive sensors to recognize your identity just by the way you hold it, and subsequently personalize the device's buttons and settings to your hand based on your user profile. That's all that's actually been patented here, but the general idea is a little more grand -- you could theoretically grip a handheld with either hand, and it would automatically generate "button zones" under each finger using sensors (or disappearing buttons, perhaps) baked right into the chassis, making cries of "you're holding it wrong" hopefully fade into obscurity. Still, it's not the first time we've seen Cupertino reaching for digit recognition and we're sure it won't be the last, so we'll just file away our enthusiasm until or unless Jobs announces it on stage.

Sure, iPod nano watch straps may be the hot new accessory these days, but the folks at Rampant Gear aren't leaving the 5th generation iPod nano behind just yet -- the company's just introduced its new Ramant View contraption that turns your nano into a head cam. Is it the best head-mounted camera option around? Probably not, but it is cheap at just $35, and it's not very hard to find a deal on a previous-gen nano either if you don't have one already.

The fabulous NumptyPhysics game by Tim Edmonds for Linux and Internet Tablets. It was also one of my favo0rite games on N810, and now it’s ported to your Symbian^1 phones
Numpty Physics is a drawing puzzle game in the spirit (and style?) of Crayon Physics using the same excellent Box2D engine.
Keys:
•stylus/finger - draw a new stroke
•tap proximity sensor – undo last stroke

The iPhone 4 went on sale today in China, with large crowds gathering outside Apple Stores in Beijing and Shanghai. The only authorized carrier in the country, China Unicom, said they received 200,000 pre-orders before sales began, and the phone apparently did brisk business at China Unicom retail outlets and Suning Appliance stores throughout the People's Republic. China Unicom requires a contract, though, and the carrier-unlocked phones available at the four Apple Stores in China are proving popular.
Most Chinese mobile phone customers pay month-to-month, rather than signing a contract. In addition, many just want to keep their existing phone number; the Chinese market does not aoffer portability. In an online survey by portal 163.com, over 70 percent of the more than 7,000 people surveyed said they would rather buy an iPhone 4 from Apple instead of China Unicom.

The rumors won’t stop flying about smaller Apple products coming out before the end of the year. First, the rumor of an 11.6-inch MacBook Air surfaced, now it would seem Apple is readying a 7-inch iPad. It is said to resemble the current iPhone 4 more than the current iPad model. It’s unclear if this new iOS device will carry the iPad or iPod brand name, but it may just end up being an oversized iPod Touch. Apple is also said to be working on the second-generation iPad, but it is not expected until next year.

Recently released Apple industrial designs registered in China show a new iPad design with dual dock connectors and what appears to be a front-facing camera. Jack Purcher at Patently Apple, who spends a lot of time combing through the databases for new stuff, turned up those designs along with a drawing of an iPad with what appears to be a front-facing camera. There's some debate over whether the drawing just shows the iPad's light sensor, but Purcher is confident that it's a camera. Also, when I looked at the Hong Kong site, I found a drawing for a MagSafe connector that makes a right angle, so the cable won't always be sticking out. Pretty mundane, but handy.

The name of certification firm TÜV Rheinland may not ring a bell, so allow us to jog your memory: these are the guys that outed the GSM versions of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus prior to their announcement earlier this year. Hence, the interwebs are paying pretty close attention this evening now that we've found US and Canadian certifications for Palm models P102UNA and P102EWW (first unearthed by homebrew hub WebOS Internals), which -- following Palm's typical model numbering convention -- would correspond to North American GSM and CDMA versions of some new device, respectively. To put things in perspective, the P101UNA was unearthed in the certification database on January 23rd and announced for AT&T on March 22nd, so we could reasonably still have a couple months' wait on these... or a couple days. No way of knowing yet how Palm plans to play this. There's also a listing for a new "inductive battery charger," which would certainly imply a new Touchstone -- which may or may not still bear the Touchstone name.
On a related note, we've received a slew of new webOS 2.0 screen shots -- and while some of them look familiar, our eyes were drawn to the sexy new "classic" and flip-style digital clocks. Important? Not necessarily, but sometimes it's the little touches that count.

This module is a sensor package for monitoring the electrical activity of the heart. It is the product of an effort to create a Wireless Body Sensor Network node that is dependable while consuming very little electricity, which means a longer battery life. To accomplish this, the microcontroller in charge of the node compresses the data (not usually done with wireless ECG hardware) so that the radio transmissions are as short and infrequent as possible.
[Igor] sent us this tip and had a short question and answer session with one of the developers. It seems they are working with the MSP430 chips right now because of their low power consumption. Unfortunately those chips still draw a high load when transmitting so future revisions will utilize an alternative.
Oh, and why the iPhone? The device that displays the data makes little difference. In this case they’re transmitting via Bluetooth for a real-time display (seen in the video after the break). This could be used for a wide variety of devices, or monitored remotely via the Internet.

Research in Motion has unveiled its Blackberry PlayBook - a tablet device that has been aimed squarely at the iPad - which will launch in early 2011 in the US, with subsequent international roll-out in the second quarter of the year.
Among the key features are full Flash support - the lack of which has caused significant disruption for web video viewing on Apple devices - as well as HTML-5 integration.
The PlayBook will also include two cameras, a 3MP one on the front and a 5MP one on the back, with 1080p video recording capability built-in.
The PlayBook is RIM's answer to the iPad - and Flash support is likely to prove popular.
"RIM set out to engineer the best professional-grade tablet in the industry with cutting-edge hardware features and one of the world's most robust and flexible operating systems," said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry PlayBook solidly hits the mark with industry leading power, true multitasking, uncompromised web browsing and high performance multimedia."
The PlayBook will also feature the ability to tether to other Blackberry devices via Bluetooth, and while the company added that it intends to release 3G and 4G versions at a later date.

The Shatter exploit that was discovered for iOS 4.1 devices has, predictably enough, been found to function on the latest Apple TV as well. Though a jailbreak fit for distribution is still brewing for all of Apple's iOS wares, this will be welcome news to folks interested in trying to add a little extra functionality to Apple's hockey puck of a media streamer. Then again, even the best of apps might not make up for it being a 720p media device in a 1080p world.

Apple is getting more media attention right now than any other technology company, including Google. Microsoft, meanwhile, is languishing in the shadows like Cinderella on the night of the ball. That's the upshot of a study released Monday by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, which found that Apple was the focus of 15.1 percent of media coverage between June 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Google received 11.4 percent of media coverage during the period, while Microsoft garnered just 3 percent.

A majority of mobile app developers see Android as the smart bet over the long run even as they vote for Apple's iOS in the short term, according to a survey conducted jointly by Appcelerator and IDC. The survey polled more than 2,300 developers who use Appcelerator's Titanium cross-platform compiler to produce iOS and Android native apps. Of the 2,300 polled, 59% said that Android had the 'best long-term outlook,' compared with just 35% who pegged Apple's iOS with that label. But three out of four said that iOS offers the best 'near-term' outlook, with 76% tagging Apple's operating system as the best revenue opportunity.

Nokia was working on an internet-ready touch-screen phone prototype back in 2004 - pre iPhone - but abandoned the project due to prohibitive production costs, a former employee of the firm has said.
A New York Times article, which quotes ex-Nokia worker Ari Hakkarainen, suggests the firm passed up opportunities to innovate in the mid-noughties, only to see others pick up where it left off.
In addition to the touchscreen concept, another ex-employee claims Nokia also rejected designs for an online app store and a 3D user interface.

Sony Ericsson has launched a 'micro display' for Android phones, which can be worn around the wrist like a watch.
LiveView lets use wirelessly pair up to a compatible handset and then read text messages, see incoming calls and keep up to date with social network alerts. It can also control music and calendar functions.
SE wants third parties to ake their apps work with the concept. And to find LiveView enabled applications, it has developed the LiveWare Manager app, which scans Android Market and presents compatible apps to the user.
Mikael Henriksson, head of creation and offering planning at Sony Ericsson Extras, said: "LiveView is the first Sony Ericsson accessory to be compatible with the open Android platform which gives developers an opportunity to be creative and develop the next must-have innovative application."
LiveView will be available in stores from Q4, 2010.

It's supposedly already headed into production, but it looks like the iControlPad is still undergoing a few last minute changes. The group behind the iPhone game controller peripheral has just announced that the device will actually use Bluetooth instead of an Apple dock connector -- a change that's apparently being done in part due to Apple's recent litigation with Hypermac, and to avoid any actual licensing issues. As you might expect from such a small project, that's also put the the team in something of a bind, and they're now looking for help from folks experienced with using Bluetooth in iOS. Of course, while the device is being pitched as an iPhone peripheral to start, there's also been support for other phones promised, and it's now been officially confirmed that those other phones will include Android phones with Bluetooth.

As the iPods get smaller and smaller, so too - apparently - does the cost of the device's ever shrinking components. According to the latest findings from our tear-down pals at iSuppli, the 8GB sixth-generation iPod nano roughly costs $43 to construct. iSuppli recalls that the fourth generation nano was only slightly less expensive to produce at around $41.
“Instead of piling on features, as so many brands do with their latest products, Apple with the sixth-generation iPod has maintained or even removed some attributes in order to fit the form factor and function desired,” said Andrew Rassweiler, teardown services manager, for iSuppli. “This has enabled Apple to offer the smallest iPod including a touch screen, while keeping component costs to a strict budget.”

Another day, another lawsuit for Apple.
According to the latest litigation hurled at the folks in Cupertino, a New Jersey based company called Multi-Format Inc. says that the way in which Apple delivers digital content (movies, TV shows, and any video segments) through iTunes directly violates a patent held by the people at Multi-Format Inc.
More specifically, the East Coast company in question secured ownership of a patent some seven years ago - "Multi-format audio/video production system" - and, based on the language of the lawsuit filed, the iTunes store and any device that secures digital video content from it, are in direct violation of close to two dozen claims within the aforementioned patent.

What is this madness we see before us? Hexxeh, he who provides your nightly Chromium builds, has dropped a small but perfectly formed bombshell by revealing that he's managed to install Google's nascent OS onto Apple's hotcake of a tablet, the iPad. He's evidenced this feat by tweeting from the liberated slate, though one of his outgoing missives includes the dire warning that he'll "dash your hopes later, there are a few catches." Well, at least that gives us a little time to fantasize about Appoogle synergies before those dream-destroying details are revealed in full.

Hey, would you look at that: if you're a developer, you can download iOS 4.2 beta 2. We're installing it right now, and we'll let you know as soon as we see what's new -- but we're hoping it fixes some of the nasty bugs we grappled with in beta 1.
Update: We've only used beta 2 for a couple minutes, but it's already so much less buggy than beta 1 we're weeping with joy.

A whitepaper published by UK research group Juniper has claimed that the North American app market will be worth around $10 billion by 2015, an increase of $4 billion from its 2009 valuation.
Chief among the reasons for the increase is the market shift toward the use of smartphones, although improving coverage and uptake of 4G networks is also seen to be an important factor.
"Carriers are at last recognising what developers want: the ability to publish their application across a wide variety of platforms while making those applications far more accessible to the end users," said report author Daniel Ashdown.
Whilst the change in phone capabilities has lead to a sharp decline in the mobile ringtone market, other areas have improved to increase the sector's overall revenue. Mobile gambling and adult applications were seen as the two biggest new areas, although established content genres such as games and entertainment had increased also.

Apple will launch a second-generation iPad in early 2011, featuring upgraded specs and a slightly smaller screen size, reports suggest.
According to Bloomberg, sources told analysts at Goldman Sachs that the new device will be launched in spring.
It will feature a 9.7-inch display, a built-in camera and mini USB port, and will probably be thinner and lighter, analysts Henry King and Kevin Lu said. They added that Hon Hai Precision Industry Co will likely be the supplier.
Despite rumours in the Taiwanese press, a smaller, seven-inch version of the iPad has not been finalised, King and Lu claimed.
Apple has declined to comment on the reports.

Pirating Android apps is a longstanding problem. But it seems to be getting worse, even as Google begins to respond much more aggressively. The dilemma: protecting developers' investments, and revenue stream, while keeping an open platform. Some have argued that piracy is rampant in those countries where the online Android Market is not yet available. But a recent KeyesLabs research project suggests that may not be true: 'Over the course of 90 days, the [KeyesLabs] app was installed a total of 8,659 times. Of those installations only 2,831 were legitimate purchases, representing an overall piracy rate of over 67%.... The largest contributor to piracy, by far, is the United States providing 4,054 or about 70% of all pirated installations...'"

"Of course the new Apple TV gets a teardown, silly," is what we would tell you should you have the audacity to question its inevitability. But alas, we're too busy analyzing every photo of iFixit's gallery to even dignify your raised eyebrow with an unprovoked response. The site gives it 8 out of 10 in its metric of repairability, opining it might be "the most eco-friendly set-top box of all time." With that sad, here are the big takeaways we're seeing so far: 8GB of storage provided care of a Samsung K9LCG08U1M NAND Flash chip, and the same one found in the iPad. Speaking of which, there's also the exact same markings on its Apple A4 processor as the iPad and new iPod touch, K4X2G643GE (not the same as the iPhone 4, as it turns out), the exact same Broadcom BCM4329XKUBG 802.11n WiFi / Bluetooth / FM chip as the iPad, and at 256MB, the same amount of RAM. Also interesting and of note are the solder pads near the side of the logic board, which look to be a perfect fit for an Apple dock connector. At any rate, with all that's under the hood, we expect the jailbreak community to have an absolute field day.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has been willing to admit some of the company's missteps in the past, and he's just done so again in addressing the now infamous Kin. Speaking with The Seattle Times, Ballmer said that the "No. 1 message from Kin is a message of focus," and that ultimately, "it just defocused activity from Windows Phone." Not exactly a huge surprise by any means, but it's still pretty notable to hear straight from the top, especially considering how much it cost Microsoft to learn that message. As for the rest of the interview, Ballmer didn't make a ton of news, but he did say that we'll be seeing additional Windows 7 tablet form factors starting this Christmas, and he revealed that he does in fact have a Facebook page, but he won't say which of the many Steve Ballmer pages is the real one. Hit up the source link below to read the whole thing.

After developing and using TaintDroid, several universities found that of 30 popular free Android apps, half were sharing GPS data and phone numbers with advertisers and remote servers. A few months ago, one app was sending phone numbers to a remote server in China but today the situation looks a lot more pervasive. In their paper (PDF), the researchers blasted Google saying 'Android's coarse grained access control provides insufficient protection against third-party applications seeking to collect sensitive data.' Google's response: 'Android has taken steps to inform users of this trust relationship and to limit the amount of trust a user must grant to any given application developer. We also provide developers with best practices about how to handle user data. We consistently advise users to only install apps they trust.'

Look, BMW -- we appreciate that you were the first automaker to provide seamless iPod integration way back when, but seriously, did anyone on the design squad look at this abomination before shipping it off to France? As the story goes, the aforesaid automaker has demonstrated the first "official" iPad-vehicle integration setup at this year's Paris Auto Show, and to be frank, it's heinous. The idea here is to provide world-class rear-seat entertainment, while apparently destroying aesthetics in one fell swoop. It's just about too hideous to be true, but the iconic "BMW" logo on the mounting brackets all but confirms the authenticity. Perhaps you folks should consult with any number of the skilled DIYers out there before shooting for the stars with version 2.0?

A developer in Europe has found the first indication that iPads running iOS 4.2 will be able to tether. Another user in the UK also sees the "Internet Tethering" configuration option in the Cellular Data Settings pane, but the option is still unavailable on iPads running the 4.2 beta in the US. In all likelihood, the feature will support wired tethering, rather than mobile-to-mobile "hotspot" tethering ŕ la MyWi.
Acording to 9to5Mac, a dev in Sweden who was running iOS 4.2 beta 2 on the 3 Sverige network noticed an "Internet Tethering" section of the APN Settings pane under Settings: Cellular Data. The section asks for the APN, username and password separate from the cellular carrier data network access credentials.

A new report from the Asian supply chain indicates that Apple has chosen Qualcomm to produce the baseband chips for the next-generation iPhone and iPad. Qualcomm, which originally developed the CDMA protocol used on Verizon's network is also working on a dual-mode chip that would allow the same device to work on multiple networks. However, the story in the Economic Daily News did not specifically say Apple would be using such a chip in future devices.
Apple has always used Infineon as the baseband chip manufacturer for its mobile devices. However, Infineon's wireless unit was sold to Intel for $1.4 billion dollars, and while Intel's CEO claims that Steve Jobs is "very happy" about the deal, there has been tension between the two companies since Intel started working with Google on its Google Tv product.
