Brits are willing to pay up to £50 more for better quality iPhone and iPad screens, a survey has found.
Apple device repair specialist iTechnician asked over 1,000 iPhone and iPad owners if they would be willing to invest more in better quality screens that wouldn’t break if dropped.
Almost 80 per cent of those surveyed said they would be happy to pay a higher price for the devices if Apple could provide stronger screens such as sapphire glass rather than the Gorilla Glass currently used.
Just under half (43 per cent) of those willing too pay more said they would be willing to pay as much as £50 more for an iPad or iPhone with a hardened screen.
57 per cent of those happy to up their spend said they would be willing to pay up to £20 more for a more resilient screen.
“Broken and scratched screens are a constant problem for iPhone and iPad owners with approximately 90 per cent of all Apple repairs [requiring] screen replacements,†commented Al Lijee from iTechnician.
“We know that Apple are trying to address this problem and there has been a lot of interest around a patent they have filed detailing some of the ways they might use sapphire glass.â€
“One such scenario is as a replacement for the current Gorilla Glass on their future devices such as the iPhone 6 or new iPad. Sapphire is harder than any other natural material (except diamond) and a sapphire glass screen would be three times stronger than Gorilla Glass, and roughly three times more scratch resistant. This could mean an iPhone or iPad screen that couldn’t be scratched by keys, and wouldn’t crack even if you dropped it on a concrete pavement.â€
“Sapphire glass sounds like great news, but there are potential cost implications. A Gorilla Glass display currently costs less than £2, but the damage resistant and crystal clear sapphire glass displays may cost around £20.â€
“We set out to find out if Apple users would be willing to foot the bill for a more damage resistant screen and were surprised by the number of people who said they would be happy to spend as much as £50 more for a tougher screen.â€
“This really shows that there is a genuine demand for sapphire glass or a similar premium solution and is a strong indicator that Apple will need to address the issue of fragile screens before too much longer.â€

Nick Statt reports at Cnet that at Apple's annual shareholder meeting Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook shot down the suggestion from a conservative, Washington, DC-based think tank that Apple give up on environmental initiatives that don't contribute to the company's bottom line. The National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), hasn't taken kindly to Apple's increasing reliance on green energy and said so in a statement issued to Apple ahead of the meeting. 'We object to increased government control over company products and operations, and likewise mandatory environmental standards,' said NCPPR General Counsel Justin Danhof demanding that the pledge be voted on at the meeting. 'This is something [Apple] should be actively fighting, not preparing surrender.' Cook responded that there are many things Apple does because they are right and just, and that a return on investment (ROI) was not the primary consideration on such issues. 'When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind. I don't consider the bloody ROI,' said Cook. 'We do a lot of things for reasons besides profit motive, We want to leave the world better than we found it.' Danhof's proposal was voted down and to any who found the company's environmental dedication either ideologically or economically distasteful, Cook advised 'if you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock.

The OpenNI website, home to the widely used framework for 3D sensing, will be shut down in April. When, in November 2013, Apple bought PrimeSense for $350 million, people speculated how this would affect the Capri mobile technology but no mention was made of what would happen to OpenNI, the open source SDK most often used as an alternative to Microsoft's closed SDK for the Kinect. After Apple acquired PrimeSense, its website quickly shut, but the Developers link still points to Open NI. The status of OpenNI is a not-for-profit whose framework allows developers to create middleware and applications for a range of devices, including the Asus Xtion Pro. It claims to be a widely used community with over 100,000 active 3D developers.

Of all the phone manufacturers out there, Samsung seems to have a particular talent for creating an anticlimax. Our first thought when holding the Galaxy S5 was that we'd been through all this before a year ago, with the equally underwhelming launch of the GS4. Our disappointment jibed with the reactions of other bloggers around us at Mobile World Congress and with many readers' comments on our hands-on article. Folks seemed to forget about the phone after five minutes and switch their attention to Samsung's new smartwatches, especially the delectable Gear Fit.
First impressions aren't everything, however. A phone's charm can take a while to sink in, and you only have to look at the Galaxy S3 for proof of that. (I reviewed that handset many moons ago, and must admit that I never expected it to do as well as it did.) As add-ons go, the swipe-based fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor may not be astounding now that we've had the HTC One Max and fitness gadgets like the Withings Pulse, but they might prove their utility in time. Even if they don't, the GS5 has other redeeming features, such as its 1080p AMOLED display, phase-detection autofocus and basic water resistance, and it comes at just the right time to win over GS3 owners whose contracts are coming to an end.
But the anticlimax is there nonetheless, and it most likely stems from a suspicion that Samsung's vast scale and manufacturing strength isn't being fully exploited. Like Apple, but unlike most other phone makers, Samsung has control over many different technologies that go into a smartphone, including the memory, display and -- most importantly -- the processor. It showed us glimpses of this cross-discipline expertise with the global versions of the Galaxy S2 and S3, whose in-house Exynos processors brought extra speed and graphics just when Android needed it, and it did something similar with the big-screened, stylus-equipped Galaxy Note series. But the GS5, like the GS4, seems much less distinctive, and so perhaps what we should be asking is this: Why isn't Samsung able to muster its in-house resources to create something truly different? And that, at least, is a question we can begin to answer.

There's a theory that if you make Android look enough like Windows Phone, that users will grow accustomed to the interface, and when it comes time to upgrade, seek to scratch that tile-shaped itch. That's the view Steven Elop gave us in ourrecent interview at MWC at least. There is another theory: finally Nokia Android handsets are here, and no matter how you dress it up, users want all the apps that come with it -- not Nokia's curated store. Enter xda-developers, the forum that works tirelessly to bend wonky Android interpretations back into unmodified shape. This time it's user Kashamalaga who has figured out how to make thefreshly minted Nokia X play nice with Google Apps, Google Now, and even the Play store. Could free and easy (no sideloading) access to the full gamut of Android apps actually work against Elop's "gateway drug" approach? It's hard to say. Though once again, the dev community provides an answer for those that play fast and loose with their OS loyalties.

Windows Phone owners no longer have to watch from the sidelines as their friends battle for supremacy in FIFA 14. EA has released a native version of the free-to-play soccer (aka football) title for Microsoft's platform with the same on-the-pitch action that you'd expect on Android and iOS, including options to buy both team points and special game modes like Manager or Kick Off. There's nothing specifically taking advantage of Windows Phone here, but Lumia owners wanting to dominate a virtual Premier League should be very happy.

The Android-based games platform will no longer be exclusive to the $99 Ouya hardware
Ouya has had a somewhat bumpy ride since its launch last year. With multiple revisions to the hardware, controller and internal software, things have improved, and Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman feels that the platform is on solid ground now with over 675 games available and 33,000 developers signed up. In an effort to make Ouya more ubiquitous as a platform, however, Uhrman has revealed that the company is becoming platform agnostic.
"One thing you'll start to see is Ouya on other people's devices," she said. "For us, we'll always have a minimum set of standards so the games will work well on our device as well as others. It's the hardware plus an ecosystem. If you think about the traditional game consoles, they're custom hardware and custom chips. To get those games, you have to buy a box for hundreds of dollars. We've always wanted to open that up. We started with a $99 box, but we always wanted to create a console platform that can live on other people's devices. We just knew it was going to take us a little bit of time to get it ready. Now we think the software is good enough, it's ready to be embedded in other people's devices. We actually started having some of these conversations during CES, and the takeup was so great that we're really jumping into the strategy with both feet this year."
With Apple going strong and potentially looking to Apple TV to expand its gaming horizons, and Amazon strongly rumored to be making its own console push, perhaps Ouya is feeling the pressure. Uhrman doesn't seem concerned, though.
"It wouldn't be a legitimate product category if Amazon or Apple didn't try to compete in it," she said. "We think that there is no better proof to our category that it's worth pursuing than Amazon deciding to go into it. We remain focused on being about games first, and changing the way console gaming works."

Several years ago, technology research firm Gartner predicted Apple would maintain its hold on the tablet market until 2015. A new study from the company, however, shows Android taking a decisive lead: in 2013, it boasted 62-percent market share, compared to 36 percent for iOS. Google's mobile operating system climbed to the number one position thanks to more tablet sales overall, though Gartner also credits the proliferation of cheaper, smaller-screen slates (the Nexus 7no doubt included) with establishing Android's newfound dominance.
The other winner, according to this study: Samsung, which grew by 336 percent in 2013 to a 19.1-percent share of the tablet market. That's still a much smaller piece of the pie than Apple's 36 percent, but among Android device makers the Korean company is still very much the king. Conversely, Microsoft has seen very modest growth; Windows 8 tablets accounted for just 2.1 percent of the market in 2013. Click through the source link for more stats.

Windows and Android are such good pals, they're quite literally inseparable on a number of dual-boot devices. Aside from some old community-driven projects, however, the relationship between Google's mobile OS and Windows Phone hasn't blossomed to a point where they're officially comfortable sharing a smartphone. Well, they better pencil in a bonding session, because The Times of India reportslocal manufacturer Karbonn is set to launch the first such dual-boot handset by June. With the ink now dry on a deal with Microsoft -- presumably a WP license agreed behind closed doors at MWC -- plans are to offer a range of split-personality devices with professional and tech-savvy types in mind. Perhaps they'll run Windows Phone 8.1 right off the bat, too, given the new version's broader hardware support, and show that you needn't create mutant advocates to tempt consumers one way or another.

After powering the world's most retweeted tweet, Samsung has also revealed a suite of app-based upgrades that future GS5 owners will receive, free, alongside their new smartphone. While Evernote and Linkedin's premium services only extend to three months, we have no complaints about six free months of the Wall Street Journal and year-long access to Bloomberg's Businessweek. The Galaxy S5 will also include a year of Run Keeper Premium, as well as limited-time premium services for Map My Fitness and Skimple. There's no Dropbox this time, but there is 50GB of free cloud storage -- for six months -- from Box. Also, in case you forgot about the Galaxy S5's heart-rate sensor, you'll also pick up a year's subscription to Lark's personal wellness app, which will plug into (and monitor) all your health metrics... until you're ready to pay another 36 bucks to extend the service. But then, who can put a price on good health?

Apple has officially announced CarPlay, its new in-car interface that'll be compatible with new Ferrari, Mercedes and Volvo cars unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show this week. Designed "from the ground up" to bridge the gap between your iPhone and your auto, it will offer touch and Siri-based voice navigation of your smartphone services, including contacts, voicemail, notifications, map directions and music cueing -- it will even support third-party apps like Spotify and iHeartRadio from launch. Voice controls will be activated by a button on the steering wheel, while the in-car touchscreen is populated with those familiar iOS 7 icons for easy access. The service will launch as an iOS update for Lightning-enabled iPhones (that's iPhone 5 and up), with CarPlay-compatible vehicles launching later this year. And if any of the above aren't your preferred automaker, Apple says that you can expect compatible cars from BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and several more in the near future.
Update: At first CarPlay will only allow you to connect through a Lightning cable, but WiFi should be coming in the near future -- at least from Volvo. And, in case you're wondering, the CarPlay connection is based on the H.264 video protocol, and sends user input from the touchscreen back to your iDevice. There's also a video demo/teaser that we've added after the break.

As founder and CEO of the Ouya (pronounced "OOO-yah") game company, Julie Uhrman's mission has been to lure gamers back to their living room televisions. Touch-screen gaming on a smartphone or tablet is nice, she suggests, but a big screen, coupled with the precision of a controller with buttons and analog sticks, offers the best platform for immersive, emotionally engaging experiences. Soon enough, though, you shouldn't need an Ouya console to play Ouya games. Later this week, Uhrman plans to announce 'Ouya Everywhere,' an initiative to bring Ouya games to television sets that aren't connected to Ouya hardware. As a company, Ouya remains vague about just how Ouya Everywhere will work; but in an interview with Slashdot, Uhrman provided a rough idea of what to expect: 'It could be another set-top [box],' she said. 'It could be the TV itself. There's a number of different ways that games can be played on the television, and we're actively exploring all of them.' To be clear, Ouya isn't getting out of the hardware business. The company has promised relatively frequent hardware refreshes, and already upgraded the original Ouya's controller to address early complaints. The next version of the Ouya hardware 'at a minimum will have a higher performing chipset,' she said. 'We have done a lot of work on our controller and we feel like there is even more work to do. Those are the two big things we're focused on.' But while her company builds hardware, Uhrman insists that Ouya is 'really a software company. The largest team inside Ouya is software engineers.' (Ouya has 49 employees, 19 of them engineers.) Ouya arrived with great fanfare in 2012, after a $950,000 Kickstarter campaign met its goal in just eight hours. The fundraiser ended up raising $8.6 million, and Kickstarter backers received their consoles in March 2013.

The iPhone 6 may feature a larger screen and higher quality camera, according to reports.
French mobile site NowhereElse posted pictures of the rumoured Apple device, showing a larger 4.7-inch screen in the same size front panel as the existing iPhone 5 and 5S.
Meanwhile, a post on Chinese social media site Weibo (viaGForGames) by an “Apple insider†claims to show an improved camera in the upcoming smartphone.
The camera is said to be eight-megapixel, with a larger 1/2.6-inch sensor and f/2.0 aperture size – the iPhone 5S currently features a six-megapixel camera with 1/3-inch inch sensor and f/2.2 aperture.
Other details of the Apple smartphone successor, which is likely to be due for a reveal and release around November of this year, are yet to emerge.

Hello, All!
VGB-Android, my GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, and Super GameBoy emulator, has been upgraded to version 4.0 today:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id=com.fms.vgb
The major version number change is due to MBC7 and tilt sensor emulation, and the drastic changes to interrupt handling. Kirby´s Tilt´n´Tumble game will now work with your phone´s accelerometer. Additionally, many games that failed due to interrupt handling, such as Final Fantasy Legend, should work now.
- Added MBC7 mapper emulation (Kirby´s Tilt´n´Tumble works).
- Reversed IRQ priorities, with VBlank IRQ getting top priority.
- Checking IRQs when ISWITCH/IFLAGS modified (Final Fantasy Legend runs).
- Added 93cXX serial EEPROM emulation.
- Added tilt sensor emulation.
- Optimized C code performance.

I have published VGBA-Android 4.3.5 today, a new version of my GameBoy Advance emulator:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d=com.fms.vgba
In this version, I have fixed the 16bit PUSH CPU instruction so that it can make changes to the I/O registers, as some programmers use this instruction to initiate the DMA and do other things. I have also added the "Hide Title Bar" option, requested by many users. Please note that once you hide your action bar, you can always get it back by sliding your finger down from the center of the screen. Finally, I have added cheats for a few games. See the complete list of changes below.
- Fixed THUMB PUSH instruction for cases where DMA is initiated with PUSH.
- Added "Hide Title Bar" option to hide status/action bar on startup.
- Added Egg Mania cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added Elf The Movie cheats to the Cheatopedia.
- Added ET The Extraterrestrial cheats to the Cheatopedia.

RetroArch Git (2014/02/27) is complied. RetroArch is the reference frontend for the libretro API. Popular examples of implementations for this API includes videogame system emulators and game engines, but also more generalized 3D programs. These programs are instantiated as dynamic libraries. We refer to these as "libretro cores". libretro is an API that exposes generic audio/video/input callbacks. A frontend for libretro (such as RetroArch) handles video output, audio output, input and application lifecycle. A libretro core written in portable C or C++ can run seamlessly on many platforms with very little/no porting effort.
RetroArch Git Changelog:
* Add missing TURBO_ENABLE. Avoid weird +1 offset.
* (RGUI) Make it possible to map all binds from RGUI
* Add HAVE_LAKKA to Makefile - commented out by default
* (GX) Add experimental libsicksaxis support - doesn't work properly
right now so not compiled in
* (Lakka) Change glTexParameterf to glTexParameteri
* (Lakka) Build fixes
* (Lakka) Add unfinished Lakka menu display driver
* Fix GPU screenshots with GL + threaded driver.
* (GX) Add more line-doubled resolutions
* (PSP1) Add __sceGuFinish_GU_DIRECT
* (PSP1) Add WIP psp1_video_inl.h
* (XDK) Simplify DrawVerticeFormats
* (GCMGL) Cleanups #3
* (GCMGL) Cleanups #2
* (GCMGL) Cleanups
* (GCMGL) Make rglGcmSetTransferImage part of rgl-gcm-cmds.h
* (GCMGL) Move more functions over to rgl-gcm-cmds.h

There's no point trying to hide on Xbox 360 and iOS, Clem, because A House Divided is also headed their way this week. After originally leaving the platforms in release date limbo, Telltale revealed the second episode of The Walking Dead Season 2 hits Xbox 360 on March 5 - that's tomorrow - and iOS on March 6.
The PC/Mac version is due today, as is the PS3 version in North America - as ever, PSN users in Europe have to wait until tomorrow. Also, Telltale says Season 2 is "tracking" for Vita by the end of this month, and it's set to launch with the first two episodes.

Microsoft is reportedly looking to expand cross-platform functionality for its Xbox Live service onto iOS and Android platforms.
The Windows Phone maker is apparently working to ease some of the console service's certifications to potentially open up things up on rival platforms. The Verge cites sources “familiar with Microsoft's plans,†as well as a pulled job listing stating that the move would be in effort "to win back game developers.â€
How? By producing easy-to-use tools to help mobile developers integrate Xbox Live functionality into their products – no matter which mobile platform they develop for.
"We will create a modern framework that is open-source, lightweight, extensible and scalable across various platforms including Windows Store, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android," the job post reportedly read.
Microsoft has yet to comment on the report. The firm already offers the Xbox SmartGlass mobile app, and previously packed specific Xbox Live features into the iOS and Android versions of its mobile title Wordament.

Windows Phone maker planning a push to make its online gaming service easier to tie into rival platforms' games and apps
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft wants its console gaming service to go mobile. According to a report from The Verge, the Xbox One maker is looking to expand Xbox Live's cross-platform functionality to iOS and Android games and apps.
The report cites "sources familiar with Microsoft's plans," as well as a no-longer-available job posting expressing a desire "to win back game developers."
"We will create a modern framework that is open-source, lightweight, extensible and scalable across various platforms including Windows Store, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android," the posting read.
The company is reportedly planning to produce simple tools to help mobile developers integrate Xbox Live into their titles, regardless of platform. As part of that effort, Microsoft will be relaxing some of the certifications and permissions required by the Xbox Live network.
Microsoft has already taken several steps to bring Xbox Live functionality to mobile, integrating friends lists and achievements into its Wordament game on iOS and Android. Additionally, the company has released an Xbox SmartGlass app that allows users to manage their accounts, check messages, and interact with some games through mobile devices.

Version 13 of XBMC's media center software, codenamed Gotham, is now ready for your official beta-testing pleasure. The foundation -- which started the project for the Xbox and spawned apps like Plex and platforms like Boxee -- kicked off work on the update nearly a year ago. It said that many of the qualms fromversion 12 (Frodo) users have been addressed. Most notably, it now supports native hardware decoding on Android for x86 and ARM platforms, which should bring smoother playback for formats like Blu-ray. Other improvements include support for more 3D formats (with the notable exception of 3D Blu-ray), better touchscreen support, enhanced UPnP capability, "dramatic" audio engine improvements and easier setup. Though nightly versions have been available for a while, the company provided the usual caveats about beta software and the importance of backing up. If you're unperturbed by that, hit the source.

If you don't like commitment, a prepaid phone plan can be appealing -- but not if you have to predict your data needs well in advance. Verizon may offer a lot more flexibility with its new Allset plans, though. While there's only one base $45 per month plan for smartphones with unlimited calling, unlimited messages and 500MB of data, customers can tack on "bridge data" that rolls any unused megabytes over to the next month. If you pay $10 for 1GB of data or $20 for 3GB, you can hold on to any leftover capacity for up to 90 days -- a big help if you know you'll need some headroom during that summer vacation. There's a $5 pack if you only need 500MB of data for 30 days, and basic feature phone users can buy the same bridge packs. Basic feature phone owners can also use Allset, although their $35 base rate caps them at 500 minutes of voice. These aren't the cheapest prepaid plans we've seen in the US (see Virgin Mobile for a good example), but they may make sense if your internet usage varies wildly from month to month.

Don't Starve and Mark of the Ninja developer Klei Entertainment launched its first iOS game this week, Eets Munchies, for $2.99. The puzzler is considered a re-imagining of Klei's previous PC game Eets, and challenges players with guiding a hungry armless rabbit-like creature through levels filled with obstacles, eating cake and sweets along the way. Eets' iOS version was revealed in March 2012.
Eets first launched on PC in March 2006 before arriving on XBLA in the form ofEets: Chowdown in April 2007. Eets Munchies contains five worlds and dozens of preset puzzles, and also includes a built-in level editor, so players can create their own puzzles to share with friends.

Ouya Everywhere aims to put Ouya games on other company's consoles, and it's kicking off that process this spring on MOJO, the Android microconsole from Mad Catz. MOJO launched in December, and one of its highlights is the eventual ability to stream PC games. Along with the Ouya news, MOJO is getting a price drop, from $250 to $200 in the US.
Ouya currently has 680 games and 33,000 developers on board, and all of that – plus any coming content – will hit MOJO in the spring. Ouya founder Julie Uhrman announced Ouya Everywhere this week, adding that the company is thinking about building a Steam-esque PC application as well.
"Up until now, the game console experience has been locked inside a box," Uhrman says in today's press release. "Together with the hardware veterans at Mad Catz, we end that. Today's announcement signifies the inception of a truly open platform where independent developers can bring their creations to the platforms where gamers actually play: everywhere."
Or, for now: on another Android microconsole.

Flappy Bird clones reportedly rolled in to the App Store at a rate of 60 games per day over the course of four days, according to numbers crunched by Pocket Gamer. The data comes from an investigation into 300 games that were deemed rip-offs of Dong Nguyen's former tap-to-flap mobile arcade game, averaging out to 2.5 clones arriving on the App Store per hour, or one per 24 minutes.
The data was pulled from games submitted between February 28 and March 3, and due to Apple's staggered release schedule, as many as 14 "Flappy" games arrived in the span of an hour at points. Pocket Gamer defined its use of the term "clone" in this case as "any game in which you guide some character through an obstacle course of pipes (or similar objects) hanging from the ceiling and sticking out of the ground." To be sure, Flappy Bird itself wasn't a particularly novel concept, but the rise in games that mimicked its exact style appeared to be unmistakable to the data gatherers.
Nguyen announced plans to pull Flappy Bird from the Google Play and App Stores on February 8, and later rationalized the decision by deeming it an "addictive product." After Nguyen pulled the game, indie developers participated in a "Flappy Jam" development challenge, which included entries from the likes of Super Hexagon creator Terry Cavanagh as well as punk band Fall Out Boy.

Nokia’s best chance to win the UK’s hearts back is to offer full Android devices along with its Windows models, says YouGov.
The research has shown that Nokia has stabilised its position in the UK market in the last year, however its installed base is only at seven per cent of the country’s market.
52 per cent of Windows owners have said that they are loyal to the OS and are not thinking of changing when they next upgrade, although this is significantly lower than 65 per cent of Android owners and 82 per cent of iOS owners.
The main reason for 32 per cent of Windows users for thinking of moving away from the OS is their frustration surround the lack of apps on the devices.
Nokia has recently released its X platform which uses a variant of Android, meaning that it is easier for developers to port their apps onto Nokia - these devices will initially only be available in emerging markets, but Nokia has said it expects the devices to be released in Europe over time.
Nokia could seriously benefit from further embracing Android, as it would open its platform to the biggest device audience, meaning more users would be inclined to upgrade to a Nokia device, or stay loyal to the company.
Russell Feldman, technology and telecoms director at YouGov, said: “In sticking to its “Windows-only†approach, it is catering to a niche whereas offering full Android devices alongside its current models could return it to the mainstream once more. By offering a credible, mid-range, Full Android handset as well as its current Windows devices, Nokia could start to take business away from its competitors.â€

Technology that lets you read much faster than usual is looking for smartwatch, smartphone and tablet vendors to partner with.
Spritz, text streaming technology that can be integrated onto mobile devices, wearables, apps, websites and more, is compatible with Samsung's Gear 2 smartwatch and the S5 smartphone. It claims to improve reading speed up to a whopping 1,000 words per minute.
If (like us) you're a little skeptical, you can try out the tech on the Spritz website and test out speeds from 250 words per minute to 600 words per minute.
Spritz claims to work with emails, text messages, embedded media, closed captioning, digital books, smartwatches, mobile phones, e-readers and wearable head-mounted displays. It's also working on getting it ready for social media websites like Twitter and Facebook, and says it could also be used for outdoor ads in the future.
It's looking to partner with tech vendors, developers and other businesses to integrate Spritz into products in the future.
The firm says the tech could improve users' regular reading speeds, and was designed to be simple and easy to learn immediately.
"Within 5 minutes, generally, you should be able to pick it up," said the company in a statement.
So how does it work?
"Most people’s focal distance (the amount of horizontal distance on a page that people can see when reading) is right around 13 characters using standard font sizes," Spritz added.
"When your eye recognises a word longer than that, it naturally jumps to the right of those first 13 characters while processing the first part of the word as it jumps. In reality, a long word requires your eye to break it into multiple pieces and that is how your brain stores it.
"We analyse each word and break them up based on this standard and show you long words in multiple pieces, just like your brain is expecting them. It works really, really well."

Android is free and open," reiterated Google Android Chief Andy Rubin in 2010 as Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7. Rubin added, 'Competition is good for the consumer and if somebody has an idea for a feature or a piece of functionality in their platform and Android doesn't do it, great. I think it's good to have the benefit of choice, but in the end I don't think the world needs another platform.' But now, CNET and Digitimes report that Google is holding up the Asus Transformer Book Duet TD300(specs), a laptop-tablet hybrid that can instantly switch between Android and Windows 8.1. A source familiar with the Asus Duet told CNET that Google is the one that has not favored the idea, while Microsoft has not, to date, been actively opposed to the idea. 'If true,' reports Apple Insider, 'it may not be the first time Google has helped to quash such a product.' South Korean electronics giant Samsung quietly canceled plans for its hybrid Ativ Q tablet last year, and Digitimes notes that Asus may not be the only company to bow to Google's wishes.

mattydread23 writes with an opinion piece naming a few reasons Firefox OS is likely to succeed"It's geared toward low-powered hardware in a way that Google doesn't care as much about with Android, it's cheap enough for the pre-paid phones that are much more common than post-paid in developing countries, and most important, there are still 3.5 billion people in the world who have feature phones and for whom this will be an amazing upgrade."I'd push greater commitment to keeping the essential components of the system under FOSS licenses onto the head of that list.

Delta robots like this automated phone tester are awesome: high speed, accuracy, and mesmerizing to watch. [Justin Engler], a security researcher from ISEC Partners (also speaks at DEFCON on occasion) needed a robot to help with repetitive testing. He contacted the folks over at Marginally Clever to see if they could help him out, and they came up with this slick delta robot.
Normally they build these robots out of plywood, but [Justin] requested a bit more of a modern look, and although it looks blue, it’s actually clear acrylic: they haven’t removed the protective film yet. The robot is quite functional, but [Justin] plans on upgrading it in the future to increase the top speed. It currently has a built-in camera, using OpenCV to watch the log-in screen as it tries every combination as quickly as possible.

Free to Play games continue to attract the attention of regulatory bodies around the world. Last year, Japan declared the "kompu gacha" system used by many F2P games to be illegal, leaving huge Japanese F2P publishers like GREE and DeNA scrambling to replace the lucrative mechanic in their games. Last month, the Office of Fair Trading in the UK issued a set of rules for F2P designed to improve transparency for consumers and prevent companies from targeting children. Now, the European Union has turned its attention to the sector, raising the possibility of strict regulation across one of the largest and most lucrative markets on the planet.
The EU's investigation into F2P is the most interesting and potentially important intervention in this market so far, not least because the EU has a pretty admirable track record of enacting consumer-friendly legislation and regulations which individual member states' authorities, fearful of losing political donations or of being portrayed as "anti-business", lack the spine or the teeth to tackle. Moreover, the sheer size of the market for which the EU legislates means that the world's largest companies have little choice but to fall in line with EU consumer rules. This means that the European supranational decisions on F2P have the potential to be more strict than any national rules thus far, and to have a more meaningful impact on the business as a whole.
As regular readers will know, I am in favour of free to play as a business model; it is not, of course, a panacea for the industry, nor is it universally applicable across all games, genres, or audiences, but it is a useful and versatile new tool in the game creator's toolbox. It unquestionably works well for some games and allows creators to reach audiences who would never be available to them in the old paid-for business model. Moreover, when it's applied correctly (which is to say, ethically, intelligently and generously), it turns out some genuinely fun games. If the fact that it's free-to-play completely ruins your ability to enjoy something like Puzzle & Dragons, Hay Day or CSR Racing, or perhaps even League of Legends, then I'd suggest that the problem lies with your ideology, not with the game design.
"If the fact that it's free-to-play completely ruins your ability to enjoy something like Puzzle & Dragons, then I'd suggest that the problem lies with your ideology, not with the game design"
Yet either in spite of, or because of, this positive outlook on F2P, I welcome developments like Japan's banning of kompu gacha, and the OFT's intervention in the UK. Why? Because this is a new field, which many developers are still trying to figure out, and I think it's healthy to establish some common sense ground rules. Kompu gacha was a horrible, abusive and deeply misleading approach to monetisation, one founded on the same principles of casino gambling - making the consumer feel like they can win relatively easily if they only spend a little more money, while in reality the mathematical odds are stacked incredibly heavily against them. The OFT's insistence on clear communication of costs and proper customer support systems, along with its prohibition on the targeting of children and one-click purchasing, equally deal with unpleasant, misleading abuses of F2P
Rules targeting such abuses are welcomed by the majority of F2P developers, and by the games business as a whole, because abusive games and practices undermine the whole sector. Abusive games become a stick with which the entire notion of F2P can be beaten; not just by core gamers or the specialist press, who are largely outside the target market anyway, but increasingly by the mainstream media, by consumer groups and perhaps most damagingly, through word of mouth in the very markets with which F2P titles wish to engage. Good, well-enforced regulations will help on two fronts. Firstly, they will eliminate the small number of egregious offenders, while forcing the tech giants who operate channels like the App Store and Google Play to act in a more responsible manner. Secondly, much to the disappointment of F2P's relentless critics, the regulations will also demonstrate how few serious offenders there actually are - and how many of the core gamers' bête noire, like King and Zynga, are already staying within the lines of these proposed regulations.
One point which has been raised - with concern by those serious about F2P, and with glee by the legions of those who view F2P as a threat to their hobby - is that the EU's statement specifically mentions the use of the word "free" as being potentially misleading. For many of the enthusiast publications covering the EU's enquiry, the take-away from this is that the EU is about to ban the entire term "free to play".
"Herein lies the second reason why "free to play" isn't going away, as a term - because, contrary to what many of its critics seem to believe, it's actually an accurate description"
This isn't going to happen. It's not going to happen for a number of reasons. Firstly, the word "free" is already in widespread usage across a whole range of industries to describe products or services which have no up-front cost but can be augmented with paid-for extras. If the EU were to decide that "free to play" was a misleading term, would Skype also have to stop describing its basic service as "free"? How about Flickr, or any number of other web services whose main offering is free but power-user features are behind subscription walls? Plenty of newspapers and magazines let you read a certain number of articles per month without payment, then charge a subscription fee to access more - would these no longer be "free"? How about World of Warcraft's free trial, which asks for payment beyond level 20? Is that no longer free? In the real world, would a car test drive no longer be "free" since you don't get to keep the car without payment? Would coffee shops near train stations have to stop offering free small coffees to commuters, as some do, on the basis that you can also pay to buy a doughnut or a sandwich? Would theatres have to stop saying they give "free" tickets to students, on the basis that they then sell ice cream and bottled water in the auditorium?
Some of those examples may seem ridiculous, but the underlying principle is the same - if those are ridiculous, then so is the idea that a game you download and play for free isn't actually "free" because it has optional purchases. Herein lies the second reason why "free to play" isn't going away, as a term - because, contrary to what many of its critics seem to believe, it's actually an accurate description. The vast, vast majority of successful F2P games are actually free to play. Candy Crush Saga, criticised constantly for being some kind of psychologically manipulative money-printing machine that preys upon the weak of mind, extracts money from less than 30% of the players who finish the game. Over 70% of those who make it to the end do so for free. I've played plenty of F2P games in recent years, some of them for several weeks or even months, and only Puzzle & Dragons and Hay Day ever got me to pay up. I personally wouldn't want F2P games to be the mainstay of my gaming diet, but in terms of entertainment time to price paid, the value on offer is undeniable. If you can finish a game or (in the case of games which don't end, as such) play it for weeks without handing over a penny, I don't see how that's not "free to play". The costs are optional - most games make this perfectly clear. Puzzle & Dragons, the most successful F2P game on earth, actually reminds you every time you start the game that it's possible to play forever without paying.
Casting aside the notion that "free" is a misleading term, as I expect the consultation will, much of the rest of what the EU proposes is common sense and broadly in line with the OFT's rules. What I think is of particular interest is that the EU is focusing its attention on the right places. It doesn't seem interested in putting pressure on developers and game creators, but rather believes that Apple, Google and the other platform operators are ultimately responsible for consumer protection on their platforms. Indeed, my primary criticism of the OFT's regulations would be that some of the things they demand from app and game creators are actually outside their control for the most part - for example, the prohibition of one-click purchases made without the cardholder being present is a problem which needs to be solved within iOS and Android, not at the level of individual pieces of software.
"I'd like to see the EU forcing the App Store, Google Play et al into even more consumer-friendly behaviour than they are currently suggesting"
If anything, I'd like to see the EU forcing the App Store, Google Play et al into even more consumer-friendly behaviour than they are currently suggesting. I'd like to see compulsory implementation of locked accounts for children on devices, with attached "pre-pay" wallets that can be charged by parents - giving children freedom to spend, and parents absolute peace of mind regarding spending limits. I'd like to see running monthly totals showing how much I've spent in a certain billing period when I make an in-app purchase, and the ability to create alerts that trigger when monthly or weekly spending exceeds certain levels. While I think the idea of a ban on the word "free" is ludicrous, I'd certainly like to see guidelines which insist that "free means free"; that in-app purchases must be optional, not compulsory for progress.
The principle on which many developers defend F2P is that it is absolutely right and fair to allow fully informed adults to make whatever buying decisions they wish. This principle is often abused, especially by self-styled neo-liberals, who think that it means the marketplace must be a free-for-all where any business practice is justified because those participating are adults. The key term to bear in mind here is "fully informed adult"; notions of market equilibrium, price discovery and the "invisible hand" of the markets break down when the provision of information is too asymmetric, meaning that one party (usually the consumer) doesn't know the same things that the other party (usually the provider or retailer) knows. This is why kompu gacha was a nasty business practice; it gave consumers an impression which was completely misleading, hiding the mathematical reality of its enormously high odds behind cutesy exhortations to spend. Businesspeople who truly believe in markets should also believe in making information as symmetric as possible, so that those markets can function effectively. Making consumers more aware of what they're spending, when they're spending it, and of the value of the things they're purchasing (in terms of whether they're required or optional for progress in the game, for example), is how you make markets healthier and more sustainable.
Opponents of free-to-play who are revelling in the ill-conceived hope that the EU is about to deal a severe blow to the industry might be surprised to find that F2P's proponents are equally hopeful about the outcome of this latest regulatory effort - and will largely be welcoming of its results. It all comes down to a simple reality; free to play, for the most part, isn't doing anything wrong or anything underhanded. Legislators and regulators carefully considering the industry will recognise that with ease, even if core gamers' visceral reactions blind them to such conclusions. A reasonable regulatory framework for F2P games will change surprisingly little, but will be good for customers and developers alike.

We've got very few details at the moment, but Sundar Pichai is preparing to lead the Android charge into the wearable space. He announced that the company will launch a new wearable SDK for Android at SXSW Interactive. The tools will be available to download in roughly two weeks time and will expand the efforts to put Google's mobile OS on smart watches or fitness bands. Pichai definitely didn't limit Android to those two particular implementations, however. He focused heavily on expanding developers' ability to harvest data from sensors of any kind... so long as they're mounted on your body. He even suggested a future where your jacket is loaded with sensors and powered by Android.

Samsung already made it clear that the Galaxy S5 would reach AT&T when it launched globally in April. Still, it's nice to know the flagship is on track for an on-time arrival, right? The 5.1-inch phone just surfaced in a fresh set of FCC documents, which show a GS5 variant with AT&T-friendly LTE bands (2, 4, 5 and 17) and support for ANT+ sensors (handy for wireless heart-rate monitors and the like). Predictably, the phone also includes GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS, for when you can't manage a 4G signal. That still leaves lots of questions -- how much will it cost? How good is this thing? -- but we suppose we'll just have to wait until April 11th to find out.

There have been leaks showing the front of the Nokia Lumia 630 (aka Moneypenny), but a complete view of the Windows Phone 8.1 hardware has been elusive... until now. Frequent tipster @evleaks has posted an apparent press shot revealing the back of the bright-hued device, and it suggests that the 630 will represent a sharp break from the designs of the Lumia 620 and 625. There's no camera key or flash, for a start -- mobile photography fans may want to give this phone a pass. We also see hints of a flatter, more X-like body. There aren't any fresh clues as to when the 630 might launch, although we're not expecting to see it until sometime after the official unveiling of Windows Phone 8.1, which may take place in April.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. We've known for a while that Verizon would carryan LTE-capable Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, but the carrier has just put the massive tablet up for sale without any fanfare. Not that it's exactly an impulse buy. Samsung's cellular-equipped slate costs a hefty $850 at full price, and you'll only save $100 if you sign up for a two-year contract. If you're determined to stay online while you draw your latest masterpiece, though, you can order the Note Pro today.

After pushing out several betas, Apple's finally ready to roll out its latest firmware update to the masses. iOS 7.1 is now available as a free download, and as expected, it adds a few new features to the mix. The new update should be heading your direction if you own an iPhone 4 or newer, iPad 2 or newer, either iPad mini or a fifth-generation iPod touch. Among the usual smattering of tweaks to the iOS UI and bug fixes, the most notable feature improvement is the inclusion of CarPlay support and fixes for the random reboot problem many iOS 7 users have been experiencing.

Fable creator Peter Molyneux has warned that “brutal†and “greedy†free-to-play mechanics are inviting government legislation, something he believes will be detrimental to the industry.
Speaking to MCV's sister month Develop, the veteran developer once again discussed his disappointment at the “brutality†of the free-to-play mechanics in the new Dungeon Keeper, a reboot of one of Molyneux’s past projects.
“We cannot continue to be obsessively greedy with our consumers, grooming children for hundreds of pounds from their parents’ accounts,†he said.
“I hate the term ‘free-to-play’, and I hate the way the model is burning through our consumers and the tender shoots of new gamers. I think the world is ready for a new way to approach that whole angle. What we’re doing with Godus is ‘invest-to-play’. When players spend money, whatever they receive must feel like an investment not a cheat – that feels like a more responsible way of monetising free games.â€

GBA.emu v1.5.19 is released. Emulate the classic Gameboy Advance (GBA) hand-held on your Android device. Gameboy Advance emulator based on VBA-M r1097 (GPL), designed and tested on the Xoom, Galaxy S2, and Xperia Play, but works on many devices with similar specs. I have made a number of custom optimizations to increase speed while maintaining VBA-M's excellent compatibility and audio quality. You should have at least a 1GHz CPU for best results.
GBA.emu Features include:

* Backup memory and save state support, auto-save and ten manual slots for save states. State files are interchangeable with the PC version of VBA-M.
* Supports games in .gba format, optionally in .zip files
* Configurable on-screen multi-touch controls & keyboard support (up to 4 touches supported at once), and an Xperia Play optimized button layout
* Wiimote + Classic Controller, iControlPad, and Zeemote JS1 support (no need to purchase a separate app, see website for full instructions)
* Portrait/Landscape auto-orientation support
GBA.emu v1.5.19 Changelog:
- Fixed incorrect screen layout on Android 4.0 when the status bar is shown
- Compatibility fixes and minor optimizations to hq2x shader (still more to come), now reports if shader fails to load in the case of an older GPU that cannot support it

RetroArch Git (2014/03/05) is complied.
* (XDK1) Use faster SwitchTexture after the first SetTexture call - should change a texture in ten x86 instructions
* (XDK1) Applies soft filtering and flicker filtering correctly now
* (XDK1) Set default_libretro_path and default_libretro_info_path
* (Xbox 1) Move SetFlickerFilter/SetSoftDisplayFilter to render_pass
* (360) Fixup core info/core dir defaults
* Ifdef libretro_free_system_info with HAVE_DYNAMIC
* (Xbox 360) Set default libretro info path and default core path
* (XUI) Fix SD menu layout
* (core_info) Add back hack for RARCH_CONSOLE
* (Menu) Show Core Directory path
* (RARCH_CONSOLE) Bake in 'Core Directory' in Path Settings
* (RARCH_CONSOLE) Take out 'DEFAULT_EXE_EXT'

HP has claimed that there is no room for retailer profit margins on tablets.
Speaking to TrustedReviews, Pascal Bourgat, HP’s VP of Consumer Personal Systems said: “If you ask Dixons ‘Are you making money on tablets?’ they will tell you immediately ‘My friend I will tell you I am making no money on tablets’.â€
Bourget said that there are low margins on tablets and their accessories should be a vital part of retailers’ business models.
“A small (tablet) jacket probably costs a few dollars to make but can retail for £25 so there’s decent margin for retailers and for us,†he said.

Having been defeated by Apple in more or less aspect of its business, Blackberry has decided to mock its rival over the iPhone’s battery life.
Yahoo reports that chief executive John Chen told conference attendees that he “calls [iPhone owners] wall huggers†due to their need to stay near a wall socket to charge their phones at the end of the day.
Chen has since assuming duties at Blackberry in November overseen a 50 per cent rise in the company’s share price and outsourced handset manufacturing to Foxconn to reduce inventory risks.
He recently found himself engulfed in a war of words with T-Mobile boss John Legere after the mobile operator emailed its Blackberry-owning customers with a trade-in offer to switch brands.
The Blackberry boss said it was a “clearly inappropriate and ill-conceived marketing promotionâ€. Legere responded by saying that 94 per cent of customers who participated in the deal swapped to a rival mobile platform.

Spike Chunsoft's visual novel Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (aka 999), is getting ported to iOS on 17th March, sort of.Published by Aksys Games, this mobile rendition of the cult DS hit, simply titled 999: The Novel, will eschew all the puzzles from the original game, so it can focus entirely on the plot and player decisions. Additionally, the art has been redone in a higher resolution and conversations have been reformatted so they're told via comic book-style dialogue bubbles rather than boxes of text ala an Ace Attorney game.Excitingly, a flow chart is being added, so players can keep track of which narrative paths they've gone down. This should make it a lot easier to experiment with the story's numerous branching possibilities.According to Gemastu, this release will cost $4.99 (about £3).For the uninitiated, 999's high-concept premise follows a series of characters trapped in a sadistic experiment where they need to solve riddles lest they be exploded by their tormentor. It sounds pretty silly, but those who've played the game tend to have nice things to say about its twisted, labyrinthine plot. EG-contributor Chris Schilling was fond of the horror story and noted in his 999 review that "the puzzles aren't the focus; they're merely a sporadic diversion from the branching plot," suggesting their omission here could be a good thing. The original Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors was succeeded by a 3DS and Vita sequel entitled Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward - a game that our Martin Robinson called "strange, frustrating and incredibly smart" in his review.

Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick has released a new puzzle game called Bears vs. Art.
Described as "a puzzling postmodern expression of the fight against subtext", gameplay revolves around strategically destroying artwork against the clock.
According to the official blurb: "Greedy millionaires have opened abstract art galleries to display and admire their latest work. Now Rory the bear is ready to fight back against the pointless pieces invading his home."
Bears vs. Art is currently available for free on the Canadian and Australian app stores. It is expected to launch worldwide soon, but Halfbrick has yet to confirm a specific date.

Breakout viral hit Flappy Birds may one day make a return to smartphone app stores, says its creator Dong Nguyen.
Flappy Birds shot to fame earlier this year when the game inexplicably went viral, topping iOS and Android app stores with millions of downloads before Nguyen pulled the game down, explaining that it "ruins my simple life", and that the game had become too addictive for its players.
But speaking with Rolling Stone in a recent interview, the Vietnamese indie developer said the game, or a follow-up to it, may make a return.
"I'm considering it," he said when asked if Flappy Birds may come back.
While Nguyen said he's not currently working on a new version of the game, he did reveal that, should a follow-up materialize, it will come with a "warning" for players similar to that of many modern Nintendo games: "Please take a break."
Elsewhere in the interview, Nguyen revealed he's working on three new games, an unnamed 'cowboy-themed shooter', a 'vertical flying game called Kitty Jetpack' and an "action chess game" called Checkonaut. One, he said, will be released this month.

Given the vast number of leaks about HTC's all new One, its upcoming flagship launching March 25th, it's almost surprising that it was this long before we saw a retail unit sold on eBay. But hey, it's finally happened, although we must say we're a bit puzzled as to why the sale only netted $500. Naturally, the final retail price will be a bit higher than that. Regardless of price, the fact that it comes in its packaging is more important because it has most of the specs listed on it.

Sure, Apple's legal scuffle over in-app purchases made by misbehaving youngstershas ended, but the firm's added a precautionary measure to avoid additional costly mishaps. Among other changes included in iOS 7.1, Cook and Co. snuck in an alert after micro-transactions that tells users similar payments can be made for the next 15 minutes without entering their password. Of course, the notice also directs the wielder of the iOS device to adjust the restriction if it's not to their liking. The 15-minute policy is far from new, but the message is likely a welcome -- albeit tiny -- addition for parents with shopping spree-prone offspring.

At some point several years ago Apple decided to offer a much more generous return policy for the iPhone than it did for other products, bumping it from 14 days to 30 days. Over the last couple of years, however, the carriers have begun shifting to a 14 day return period. Obviously this caused some confusion among consumers who faced different terms depending on where they purchased their handset. Now Apple is (re)joining them by returning to the more restrictive two week policy. The move brings all parties in line with each other, which should reduce confusion and avoid surprise charges -- it was possible before to be hit with an early cancellation fee from your carrier if you returned your iPhone to an Apple store. Though, clearly we wish everyone had settled on 30 days.

We often tease Samsung about the seemingly arbitrary way it divvies up its tablet offerings -- not content with round numbers, it's released tablets that are 10.1inches wide instead of 10, 8.9 instead of 9, 7.7 instead of 8, and so on. And so too is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, whose extra 0.4 inch seems unnecessarily tacked on. Yet, this results in a 16:9 aspect ratio that makes it well-suited for watching movies, which makes us willing to forgive its silliness. Plus, even if that weren't enough to sway us, there's so much else to like about Tab Pro 8.4 that the odd screen size is but a minor detail. Indeed, while Samsung released its latest Galaxy Tab Pro line of tablets in both 10.1 and 12.1 inches, it's the 8.4-inch model that's likely to win the hearts of most.
Why do I say that? Simple: Portability. Just like the iPad mini with Retina display, the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 offers a sharp tablet in a travel-friendly form factor. Except, of course, the Tab Pro 8.4 runs Android, and is thus an alternative for those who'd like a premium 8-inch tablet without having to lock themselves into iOS. And that's not all that the tiniest Tab Pro has going for it: The display is pin-sharp; the design is handsome; and the quad-core processor is not to be sneezed at. But at $400, it's not exactly cheap and it's also got some serious competition.

Those fancy 2048×1536 pixel resolution displays found in the iPad 3 and 4 can be used for much more than high def Candy Crush and Netflix viewing. [Freddie] over in Southampton, UK built his own adapter to connect these high-resolution LCD panels to anything with a DisplayPort connection. It’s called OSCAR, and it’s the open source way to add a whole lot of pixels in a second (or third, or fourth….) monitor.
The LCD panels found in the iPad 3 and 4 don’t use the usual LVDS connection found in just about every other LCD panel ever made. It uses an extension of the DisplayPort protocol, meaning any graphics card with one of these ports already does the heavy lifting for this panel. The only other thing that’s needed is an adapter to control the power and backlight, which is easily handled by an ATMega32U4. This makes OSCAR Arduino compatible, making it easy to add sensors and USB playthings.
OSCAR is available on Kickstarter for £65 (~$100 USD) for the board itself. Adding to that, you’ll need to grab an iPad retina display through the usual channels for about $65. Not exactly cheap, but try finding another better-than-1080p display for that price.

"Apple and Samsung couldn't agree on a patent cross-license even though their CEOs met recently. What could be the reason (or one of the reasons) is that Apple is asking for obscenely high patent royalties. At the March 31 trial an Apple-hired expert will present to a California jury (already the third jury trial in this dispute) a damages claim of $40 per device (phone or tablet) for just a handful of software patents. The patents are related to, but don't cover all aspects and elements of, functionalities like slide-to-unlock, autocorrect, data synchronization, unified search and the famous tap-on-phone-number-to-dial feature. Google says there are 250,000 patentable inventions in a smartphone. On average, Apple wants $8 per patent per device. That would add a patent licensing bill of $2 million to each gadget. So Apple and Samsung will be back to court again later this month.

Samsung has insisted that the recent fire at a manufacturing plant will not impact the Galaxy S5’s rollout.
The fire at DAP Corporation in South Korea was detected on Sunday morning and caused around $1 billion in damage. 287 firefighters and 81 vehicles battled the blaze for six hours.
"We will do our utmost to help stabilise DAP Corporation's operations," Samsung said in a statement.
"In the meantime, we do not expect any production delays of the Galaxy S5, as we rely on multiple contractors."
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S5 at this year's Mobile World Congress.
The new flagship smartphone features a fingerprint scanner that can be used to authorise PayPal transactions online.

Surgeon Simulator will launch on iPad tonight, providing the game follows the common trend for UK and US iOS app releases that hit the same day as New Zealand. The game is out now for New Zealanders, and has players guiding the shaky hands of returning surgeon-of-sorts Nigel Burke through operations on "the world's unluckiest patient, Bob."
The game includes a multiplayer mode, the heart and double-kidney transplants from the bloody PC version of the game as well as new teeth and eye transplant objectives. Given the game's new touch controls, developer Bossa Studios opted to hack away Nigel's left arm, so it no longer floats around the operating room in the iPad version. Those with iPad 4 devices or better can also record and upload their surgeries for the amusement of others. Surgeon Simulator will cost $5.99 for US players and £3.99 for wannabe doctors in the UK, according to Pocket Gamer.

Rhythmic auto-platformer Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is a million-seller for Gaijin Games, and the Californian studio is celebrating the fact with a limited-time price cut. The game is $5 on all platforms - it launched at $15 - while iOS adaptation Bit.Trip Run is down from $4 to just 99 cents.
Runner 2 continues the Bit.Trip Runner mix of excellent music and challenging 2D levels to jump and slide your way through, but it swaps out the first game's retro soundtrack and look for more modern stylings. It also features the narration of Mario voice actor Charles Martinet, and that probably alone makes it worth the $5.

Nokia X 'Porting Bus' will park up in Paddington to offer workshops, food and beer.
Nokia recently proved the rumours to be true at Mobile World Congress, moving beyond its Windows Phone-only border to enter Android country with the Nokia X line.
The Finnish firm is keen to get developers on-board the Google OS mission and will be helping the free porting process in London next week on Friday, March 28th.
In fact, the company is so eager to drive adoption, it will park the Nokia X 'Porting Bus' outside its office in Paddington to offer technical workshops, consultations, food and beer.
Those taking part on the day will receive DVLUP points for each app they port, translating into rewards for app promotions and so on.
The London push comes following data that suggests Android will make Nokia a success in the UK.
Interested? Registration details can be found on Nokia's Eventbrite page.

Flappy Birds developer Dong Nguyen reveals why he took one of the most talked about apps of all time offline.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Nguyen said that he was bombarded with messages from parents, teachers and players complaining that his game was damaging their lives.
One message was from a woman saying Nguyen was "distracting the children of the worldâ€, another complained that "13 kids at my school broke their phones because of your game, and they still play it cause it's addicting like crack."
Other messages were from workers saying they had lost their jobs because of playing the game.
Nguyen told the publication that he realised that people were hurting themselves playing the game. That coupled with the constant attention from the media led to the developer deciding to take the game offline.
Flappy Birds was released on the iOS App Store on May 24th and went viral eight months later, where it was downloaded more than 50 million times, earning Nguyen an estimated $50,000 a day.

According to a new report by Omnico Group, 50 per cent of 55-59 year olds use their smartphones to compare prices in store.
This is compared to on 37 per cent of 18-24 year olds.
The younger generation are also much keener on loyalty programmes such as vouchers or mobile loyalty schemes, with 29 per cent of 18-24 years old claiming that such schemes make them more likely to give their custom to a retailer.
“Some people may be surprised to see Generation Y – the smartphone generation – as less savvy than their parents and grandparents when it comes to shopping for offers whilst on the go,†commented Steve Thomas CTO of Omnico Group.
“Instead, we’re seeing younger people being drawn in by mobile loyalty schemes, rather than offers. This gives brands a golden opportunity to target Generation Y with mobile marketing and intuitive mobile apps and offers, in order to secure brand ambassadors and sustainable customer loyalty in the future.â€

A picture of the controller for Asus’ as-yet announced Android gaming console, the Game Box, has surfaced.
According to previous reports, the Asus Game Box will feature an Nvidia Tegra 4 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage capacity, and will run on Android 4.3 ‘Jelly Bean’.
The controller for the box was leaked via the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, which certifies devices with Bluetooth connectivity.
The form of the peripheral resembles that of a PlayStation controller, but has face buttons more like of an Xbox controller, labelled A, B, X and Y.
Further details of both the Game Box and controller are yet to surface, but the Bluetooth SIG post describes the Box as an “Android system for gaming markets that also added [sic] mouse mold [sic] for controlling on smart TV. 10 meters wireless bluetooth control, 430mAH for up to 12 hours playing time.â€

March 13th, 2014, 22:37 Posted By: wraggster
For years, Microsoft remained adamant about its licensing fees for Windows Phone: if a smartphone manufacturer wanted to include the software on its devices, it would need to pay Microsoft a certain amount per unit. That was a logical strategy for Microsoft, which became a very big company thanks to licensing fees for Windows and other platforms. Unlike some of those other products, however, Windows Phone has struggled for adoption in its marketplace, which is dominated by Apple and Google. In response, suggests the Times of India, Microsoft may have dumped licensing fees for two Indian smartphone makers, Karbonn and Lava (Xolo). Microsoft's biggest rival, Google, gives its Android mobile operating system away for free, a maneuver that helped it gain spectacular market-share in a relatively short amount of time. If Microsoft pursues a similar strategy in different markets, it could encourage more smartphone manufacturers to produce Windows Phone devices, which could increase the platform's market-share—but there are no guarantees that scenario will actually play out. The smartphone market is increasingly saturated, and Microsoft's opponents have no intention of allowing Windows Phone to gain any ground.

March 13th, 2014, 23:11 Posted By: wraggster
In January 2012, we suggested 50 iOS games that deserved your time. These 20 represent the progress of the past two years, and span from cult curios to the big names that spawn clones. You can read our latest in-depth report on the state of iOS gaming here. [h=1]Rayman Jungle Run
PastaGames, Ubisoft[/h]Of iOS’s copious auto-runners, PastaGames’ reduction of all that’s good about Rayman sits at the top. With none of the microtransaction contrivances that forced Fiesta Run’s spoilsport level design, Jungle Run feels like a complete platform game even without a D-pad. [h=1]Rymdkapsel
Grapefrukt[/h]Swedish one-man studio Grapefrukt’s game distils the tower defence and strategy genres to their essence, tasking players with constructing a space base from a random selection of tetrominoes. Build, gather and defend to stave off your inevitable death for as long as possible. [h=1]Year Walk
Simogo[/h]In this disquieting small-screen experience, Swedish studio Simogo combines local folklore with
a series of touchscreen-tuned puzzles. It’s a haunting, and macabre, adventure. A cleverly integrated companion app and a breathless endgame complete one of the App Store’s most intriguing prospects. [h=1]Ridiculous Fishing
Vlambeer[/h]Tilt to avoid schools of fish as your line sinks, grab as many as you can
as it rises, then shoot them to bits as they arc into the sky. Ridiculous Fishing’s simple conceit masks an upgrade system of surprising depth, and proves that few understand rhythm and feel quite like Vlambeer. [h=1]Angry Birds Star Wars
Rovio[/h]The most complete – and humorous – of Rovio’s series, Angry Birds Star Wars blends classic bombardment, Space’s gravity-based levels and a brand that’s almost as well known as its own. Who isn’t tempted by the thought of pelting AT-ATs with birds? [h=1]Beat Sneak Bandit
Simogo[/h]Even without the catchiest tunes this side of the Mushroom Kingdom, Simogo’s twist on stealth would be unmissable. Your thief can only move with taps on the beat, which infuses the game’s jiving puzzle-box rooms with finger-tapping rhythm to match. Add in a colourful sense of style and the result is a brain-teaser with soul. [h=1]Clash Of Clans
Supercell[/h]Clans’ immovable place at the top of the iOS charts has made it the figurehead for all that’s wrong with the App Store, but its evil is overstated. It’s hard to begrudge Supercell a few microtransactions when the core base-building and tower-defence mechanics are executed so well. [h=1]The Room
Fireproof[/h]Fireproof makes the strongest case for touchscreen controls with its beautiful and intricate locked boxes and puzzle tables built to be explored by observation and touch. Apple’s iPad was born for those knobs, buttons, switches and sliders, and mouse control would be a poor substitute for hands-on interaction. [h=1]868-Hack
Michael Brough[/h]In a world saturated by roguelikes, 868-Hack manages to stand apart thanks to its striking retro computer aesthetic and unflinching difficulty. Risk and reward have rarely been so closely pitched as they are here, with every pickup adding to your hacking abilities but generating yet more unrelenting enemies. [h=1]Puzzle & Dragons
GungHo[/h]‘Bejeweled meets Pokémon’ is a fine enough pitch, but it’s too simplistic a description for this staggeringly deep game. There’s always something to do – feeding your team to power them up, hunting specific materials to evolve them further, or ranking up to increase your stats. What starts as a bus stop distraction quickly becomes an obsession that eats entire evenings. [h=1]Super Hexagon
Terry Cavanagh[/h]This is a test of reactions in which you guide a triangle through the gaps in various shapes as they collapse towards the centre of the screen. It starts off hard and tops out near inhuman, but every failure is simply a chance to have another go.
Spaceteam
Henry SmithFew games let you ride the catastrophe curve like Spaceteam. Your crew of local co-op friends is trapped on a stricken craft, and you need to call out failing systems for others to fix on their instrument panel while everyone else does the same. It’s a frantic, raucous recreation
of sci-fi’s tensest moments. [h=1]Device 6
Simogo[/h]Simogo puts a new spin – literally – on the concept of the text adventure, with players rotating their iOS display to keep up with text that shifts orientation as its amnesiac protagonist explores the environment. It’s remarkable – no wonder it’s a strong contender for IGF domination. New Star Soccer
New Star GamesAn intoxicating blend of Flick Kick Football’s controls and Football Manager’s stat management, New Star Soccer’s iOS release transformed Simon Read’s decade-long hobbyist PC project into a global success. It’s even been championed by the very pro sportsmen whose lives, both on and off the pitch, it seeks to recreate. [h=1]Pandemic: The Board Game
F2Z Digital Media[/h]Casting you and up to three friends as CDC agents, Pandemic is an intense co-operative game of global infection control. This iPad conversion is beautifully presented, and some of the most social fun you can have with a single Apple device. [h=1]Skulls Of The Shogun
17-Bit[/h]Analogue strategy could have been messy on a touchscreen, but 17-Bit has summoned a superb control scheme for this port. Wickedly irreverent and tactically rich, Skulls’ turn-based journey suits snatched moments, and crossplatform play keeps this a vital install long after you’ve finished the 24 story levels. Tilt To Live
One Man Left StudiosGeometry Wars for the iOS generation, this accelerometer-controlled survival game simply asks you to avoid the red dots while collecting automatically deployed weapons such as black holes and homing missiles. With no sticks, let alone virtual controls, this is one of the purest shooters out there. Frozen Synapse
Mode 7The immediacy of mobile devices has turned sitting down at a PC for anything less than work or a lengthy gaming session into an inconvenience, so Mode 7 responded with a port of its phase-based strategy game. Now a two-minute turn is never more than a reach into the pocket away. [h=1]Zombies, Run
Six To Start[/h]Those who find repetitive electronic beats aren’t quite incentive enough to keep up a fitness routine will find much to like in Six To Start’s mission-based audio adventure. Start running and within minutes you’ll hear the shuffling undead hordes at your back; keep going to gather supplies to improve your home base. XCOM
2KXCOM has become the face of premium gaming on iOS, with its premium presentation and premium pricetag, but it’s an experiment that worked for 2K. It also prepared the ground for the brilliant Panzer Corps at £14/$20 and a new generation of ‘high’-price, high-quality PC ports.

March 13th, 2014, 23:13 Posted By: wraggster
Much has changed in the two years since we called Apple “the hottest property in handheld gaming†and said that the company had “changed the videogame industry irrevocablyâ€. Between E236 and today, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has passed away, iPhone 5 has launched and bifurcated, Game Center’s poker-table felt has been torn off in favour of a spartan interface, and a wave of licensed iOS controllers has reached the market, drawing iPhones and iPads closer to the traditional world of videogame hardware. In other respects, though, nothing is different – Apple seems no closer to infiltrating the home console business through its set-top box, for example. But crucially – at least for the people who have seen iOS platforms become integral parts of their gaming lives – it feels like the potential we saw in Apple’s devices to become a disruptive force has dissipated. Where we once saw a promising new marketplace of fresh ideas, unrestricted creativity, and daring new ways to play, the App Store of 2014 is swamped with cash-guzzling junk, shameless knockoffs and predictable sequels. Games worth discovering still exist, but they mostly dwell on the fringes and in the shadows, while endless horror stories suggest that paid-for games are simply no longer profitable and are dying out. What happened to the iOS gaming revolution? The App Store is still turning over an extraordinary amount of money – the marketplace attracted spending in the region of $1bn in December 2013 alone – but the lion’s share of the profits is going to an elite cabal of developers making free-to-play games. The App Store’s Top Grossing chart, which remains the most prominent method of getting games in front of players, has effectively frozen. “All of the top-ten-grossing apps in 2013 were over a year old,†says free-to-play design consultant Nicholas Lovell. “There is no other entertainment industry where month on month it’s the same things at the top of the charts – not for books, not for DVDs, not for movies.â€This chart has become a self-sustaining cycle, acting as a billboard for games such as King’s Candy Crush Saga the whole year round, which in turn keeps them at the top. And while the most egregious ways to game the rankings have been stamped out by Apple, “people are definitely buying their way to chart positionsâ€, according to Lovell. “There’s no doubt about that.†The App Store’s Top Grossing chart remains largely static, acting as a year-round banner advertisement for hugely successful games like Candy Crush Saga.
“I think the Top Grossing charts should be removed from the stores,†says Barry Meade of The Room developer Fireproof Games. “It’s entirely unreflective of what is actually for sale and teaches users nothing about the exciting new stuff that’s out there on their devices.â€But no matter how much the stagnant chart positions have played a role in free-to-play’s uprising, it’s not surprising that the model would become dominant on iOS and Android. These platforms have always been skewed towards those looking to fill snatched moments here and there, and they’re markets where straightforward, inexpensive games such as Angry Birds have long ruled the roost. But dropping up-front pricetags has smashed even the perceived barrier to entry, massively broadening the player pool.In itself, free-to-play isn’t an evil phrase or business model. Even self-identifying ‘hardcore’ gamers have flocked to free PC games such as Dota 2 and PlanetSide 2, after all. And there are certainly cases on iOS where the model supports, rather than undermines, an enjoyable game design, most notably in GungHo’s Puzzle & Dragons. But there’s still a problem. “With seemingly everybody in mobile development hearing the call of the cash, free-to-play mechanics are skewing investment into an ever-narrowing field of game types,†Meade warns.Successful free-to-play games tend to be endless runners, match-three puzzlers, lightweight city builders and strategy games, with few exceptions. Attempts to adopt the model beyond this narrow band have not been positively received: hyped FPS The Drowning was critically panned, while even a big-name, well-promoted title such as PopCap’s Plants Vs Zombies 2 dropped out of the top 100 in many countries’ Top Grossing charts in a matter of months.

Though it's not likely that we'll see a Hideo Kojima game on mobile devices in the near future, it is a possibility that the Metal Gear Solid creator has put some thought into.
In a interview broadcast via Twitch, Kojima sat down with Geoff Keighley to field questions from the public. When asked if he'd ever develop a game for the mobile platform, Kojima stated that he has no desire to create the short, replayable diversions that constitute most mobile games. Instead, he cites indie hit Papers, Please as a personal favorite and claims that he would eventually like to develop "a practical, easy to play adventure game that is quite deep."
"[I have] no idea when I'll be able to do this, but I'll ask," Kojima added via translator. "[H]opefully someday in the future I will be able to develop one of those, but unfortunately, right now, my full time is devoted to The Phantom Pain."
A later question centered on the future of Snatcher, Kojima's cult classic adventure game that, while highly regarded, has been overshadowed by Metal Gear Solid. While Kojima would like to see Snatcher return, he has no time to develop a sequel himself, but wouldn't be opposed to someone else reviving the sci fi epic. "If someone wants to adapt those games ... I would definitely support that person, I would help out that person, but I don't think there are too many people like that."

Card Hunter, the RPG and collectible card game hybrid that launched last year, was one of the first "real" games we've seen for browsers, but even at the time it was obvious it would be best as a mobile experience. We weren't alone in that thinking: Newly-founded DropForge Games will be handling mobile porting duties.
"The number one request from the Card Hunter community has been 'when will this be on my tablet?'" said developer Blue Manchu CEO Jon Chey. "The game's design screams out for a tablet experience."
The mobile version announcement this morning didn't put its cards on the table about platforms or a release window. We followed up with DropForge VP Joe McDonagh who told us, "No release date confirmed. We're working on the plan right now but at a minimum we're going to release some new adventures for it. We're also going change the UI to optimize for tablet."

Sega announced Crazy Taxi: City Rush this morning, a new free-to-play entry that's being developed exclusively for mobiles. Kenji Kanno, the man who created the original 1999 arcade game, is back as an exec producer on the series' first new entry in seven years.
The dev behind the steering wheel is Hardlight Studios, the mobile specialist team that recently delivered Sonic Dash. Hardlight is going with one-touch controls like swiping to switch between lanes, but the aim of City Rush remains the same: grab some unsuspecting passenger and deliver them to their destination as quickly and recklessly as possible.
Looking at the nitty-gritty features, in City Rush you can cab Facebook friends around the city, and there's support for both portrait and landscape play. Most important of all, you select your own music to drive to; we've already got the four Offspring and Bad Religion songs we need lined up and ready to cycle endlessly.
Also, Sega is marking today's announcement by making the original Crazy Taxifree on iOS and Android for a limited time. Meanwhile, City Rush is due to screech onto our sidewalks later this year.

The giant, stompy robots and diminutive, squishy pilots of Titanfall may find a new battlefield on Apple's OS X.
Vince Zampella, CEO and co-founder of Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment, was asked point-blank if the hit shooter would appear on Macs. "We are talking to Aspyr," Zampella tweeted, adding, "they should do it." Aspyr is a company that specializes in porting PC games to the Mac. Its most recent efforts include BioShock Infinite and Borderlands 2.
Mac gamers should be pleased by this news, but shouldn't get their hopes up just yet. Zampella's tweet is far from a confirmation that the game is coming to Mac, and even if things pan out that way, it will take a while for Aspyr to bringTitanfall to Apple's hardware. Aspyr's Borderlands 2 port appeared four months after its PC incarnation, while BioShock Infinite lagged behind its counterpart by half a year.

Samsung has unveiled a new case for its Galaxy Core Advance smartphone that aims to improve accessibility for people with sight difficulties.
The Ultrasonic Cover sends vibration or Text-to-Speech alerts whenever an object comes within two meters of the front of the case.
The idea is that visually impaired users can hold their phone in front of themselves and navigate around rooms.
As well as the cover, Samsung unveiled a stand that works with the galaxy Core Advance to allow for automatic reading of written material, along with an NFC-based Voice Label, which allows users to easily record notes.
Samsung said it developed the tools after conducting in-depth interviews with disabled and visually impaired people.

Details and images of the Samsung S Band have been leaked.
Originally announced alongside the Samsung Galaxy S4, the health tracking band is similar in function to a FitBit or Jawbone Up device.
SamMobile revealed a series of supposedly leaked slides showing the wearable tech and highlighting some of its features.
Worn on a wrist like a watch, the S Band has no display and is available in a selection of colours. Like a FitBit, the electronic hub of the device can be detached and swapped into a different strap, or clipped onto a belt.
The slides describe some of the S Band’s features, including the ability to track steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned and sleep quality.
No prices or release date details were revealed.

"The laptop has undergone many changes over the past decade. At various times, netbooks, ultrabooks, and Chromebooks have been en vogue. Over the past several months, we've seen signs of the next step in the laptop's evolution: Android/Windows dual-boot laptops. Several companies have built these machines already, including Asus and its upcoming Transformer Book Duet TD300. However, neither Google nor Microsoft seem to want such an unholy marriage of operating systems, and they've both pressured Asus to kill off the dual-boot product lines. Asus has now complied. 'Google has little incentive to approve dual-OS models, since that could help Microsoft move into mobile devices where Android is dominant. ... Microsoft has its own reasons for not wanting to share space on computers with Google, particularly on business-oriented desktop and laptop PCs that could give the Internet giant an entry point into a Microsoft stronghold. Computer makers that make dual-OS machines risk jeopardizing a flow of marketing funds from Microsoft that are an important economic force in the low-margin PC business.'"

A revamped early random number generator in iOS 7 is weaker than its vulnerable predecessor and generates predictable outcomes. A researcher today at CanSecWest said an attacker could brute force the Early Random PRNG used by Apple in its mobile operating system to bypass a number of kernel exploit mitigations native to iOS. 'The Early Random PRNG in iOS 7 is surprisingly weak,' said Tarjei Mandt senior security researcher at Azimuth Security. 'The one in iOS 6 is better because this one is deterministic and trivial to brute force.' The Early Random PRNG is important to securing the mitigations used by the iOS kernel. 'All the mitigations deployed by the iOS kernel essentially depend on the robustness of the Early Random PRNG,' Mandt said. 'It must provide sufficient entropy and non-predictable output.'

Masatoshi Son, SoftBank CEO, remembers the early days when he tried to cut a deal with Steve Jobs in order to be the first to offer the not-even-named-iPhone-yet- 'new phone' from Apple, back in 2005. At the time, Son didn't even own a mobile carrier. He then purchased Vodafone, and was indeed the first to sell the iPhone in 2008 (then Au-Kddi in 2011, and DoCoMo in 2013). Today, 75% of smartphones sold in Japan are iPhones."

The moddable, Android-based Ouya hasn't won over all developers with strong sales from its userbase, but the open-source console still gets the occasionalexclusive release. According to Ouya's announced plans for GDC, that trend is going to continue. Six titles planned to launch exclusively on the Ouya will be present at the show, with Whispering Willows and Neverending Nightmaresjoining the selection in console-exclusive releases. This pair of games will also reach PC, Mac and Linux.
Among Ouya's GDC lineup is Glitchnap's LAZA KNITEZ!!, the multiplayer jousting competition in space that's shown in the above trailer. Toto Temple Deluxe also pits up to four players against each other, demanding an answer to the question: "Who can hold this goat the longest?" Players propel themselves into each other to knock the goat loose before sprinting away with it to boost their own score.
Reagan Gorbachev might be the oddest of the bunch, though - in the game's universe, ninjas attack a summit between the US and Russia during the Cold War, instigating an unlikely partnership between President Reagan and Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev. Reagan Gorbachev's recent trailerresembles the top-down action of Hotline Miami, albeit with a bit less neon and blood geysers.
If any of the involved games interest you but you're without an Ouya, keep in mind that you'll soon be able to find Ouya games elsewhere, starting with Mad Cat's MOJO microconsole in the spring.

Wikipad 7, the Android gaming tablet with attachable controller, now costs $200 in the US, down from its $250 launch price. So far, Best Buy offers the updated price, and other retailers are expected to follow suit soon, along with stores in other regions around the world.
Wikipad 7 includes the Android Jelly Bean OS, 16GB memory with a slot to add 32GB more, and more than 250 games in the store (no, Wikipedia is not one of them). See a list of controller-supported games here.
Wikipad launched in the US in June 2013, after a delay from October 2012. In February 2013, the Wikipad team dropped plans for a $500, 10-inch tablet to make the cheaper, 7-inch model on the market now.

Samsung's upcoming Windows 8.1 smartphone for Verizon, the ATIV SE, passed through the FCC last month, and now we're getting a look at the actual device. The leaked press photos above show a phone that strongly resembles the Windows Phone-powered ATIV S, with a physical home button. The alleged ATIV SE appears to share design elements with Samsung's Galaxy handsets as well, from the rounded edges to the textured finishes on the back and front. It's still unclear when the ATIV SE will launch on Verizon, but we know it'll arrive some time this year following the debut of the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system. Expect a 5-inch, 1080p display and LTE capability when the SE hits store shelves.

March 16th, 2014, 20:57 Posted By: wraggster

At Mobile World Congress in 2012, Samsung announced a pico projector smartphone known as the Galaxy Beam. Although it was a cool concept, the phone's downfall was its middling specs, aging OS and large chassis. Two years later, it appears that Samsung's working on a successor to the Beam called the SM-G3858, according to China's government database. The Tenaa entry even comes with a few pictures, most of which offer an indication of a projector: there's clearly a bump on the upper back which opens up to a wide lens on the top, and we also saw an extra button that models after the original Beam -- in fact, the icon above the button looks eerily like the one seen here. Curiously, Samsung has shed the sporty misshapen look in favor of a sleek metal build, which certainly seems a better fit for professionals.
The database also gives us a glimpse at its specs, some of which are an improvement over the original Beam; the China Mobile-branded phone reportedly packs a 4.66-inch WVGA (800x480) display, Android 4.2.2, a quad-core 1.2GHz chipset with 1GB of RAM, microSD slot with up to 32GB external storage, as well as TD-SCDMA and GSM connectivity (no LTE on this model, although there's a chance this is simply a 3G-only variant of a global model). It's also 11.6mm thick, which is much thicker than most Samsung smartphones but still is nearly a full millimeter thinner than the original. It's still too early to determine whether this is going to be exclusive to China Mobile or available to a global market, but at least we know the phone exists for now; Samsung, we're hopeful, will provide us with the rest of the story at some point down the road.

Just a few weeks after WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum hinted that his Facebook-owned service will integrate voice communication features (VoIP, specifically) into its apps by this summer, we're finally seeing alleged screenshots that show off what it'll look like on iOS. The shots, which were leaked by iPhoneItalia, show an interface that looks awfully similar to the iOS 7.1 phone UI -- complete with circular buttons, blurred background and even a similar keyboard (is the shift key on or off?), albeit with a camera button on top. We're hearing that you'll be able to make calls for free over WiFi or cellular, which will help WhatsApp compete against the litany of other VoIP apps and services available on the market.

Sprint has slapped a fresh coat of paint on its prepaid mobile by rebranding Sprint As You Go to Sprint Prepaid and launching all-new plans. The carrier has more attractive pricing too, though there's a caveat. The Smart Plus LTE data plan is $10 less at $60, but the previously unlimited data is now throttled after 2.5GB like plans on Sprint's Virgin and Boost Mobile brands. If you don't need network data, the basic Smart Plan is $45 for unlimited calls and texts (plus WiFi data), a $5 drop over last year. You'll also be able to pick any device you want, as long as it's an LTE Samsung Galaxy S3, LTE Galaxy S4 mini, 3G Moto G or pre-owned Apple iPhone 4s. With T-Mobile having just doubled down on data, we're not sure how tempting that sounds -- but if Softbank gets its merger, it may soon not matter.

The focus right now might be on Samsung's Pro tablets, but the South Korean company also has a little something called the Note 10.1 2014 Edition. Introduced back last summer, this LTE-ready slate is available on Verizon starting today, featuring a sharp 10.1-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 display, 32GB of internal storage (up to 64GB via microSD), a 8,220mAh battery and Android 4.3. Naturally, you can also expect to see a lot of TouchWiz, with features like Multi Window and My Magazine -- hey, gotta use that S Pen sometime, right? Just be prepared for your wallet to take a hit: Verizon is selling the Note 10.1 2014 Edition at $600 with a two-year contract. And if you're not interested in signing on the dotted line, then you'll have to pay $700 if you wanna take home the tablet, no strings attached.

Apple's next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 8, looks an awful lot like the iOS you've already got on your iDevice. At least that's according to screens leaked on Chinese microblog site Weibo and lent credence by veritable Apple site9to5Mac, which show what is supposedly iOS 8 in action. Yes, square icons with rounded edges are back, but that design is wrapped around some new entrants in the app world: TextEdit, Preview and Tips. It's easy to guess what the first one might be (a potential replacement for the Notes app), but Preview? Given the icon's distinct resemblance to the application of the same name in OS X, we're guessing this serves a similar function: viewing documents and PDFs. As for Tips? Well, that's probably just a solution for introducing new users.

Twitch has announced the first title to use its mobile video game streaming tech is Gameloft's Asphalt 8: Airborne for iOS.Asphalt 8 is a mobile arcade racing game where players race against the AI or real world players while doing stunts. It's had more than 48m installs. The Twitch mobile integration lets you stream your voice and image using your iOS device's microphone and front-facing camera, and monitor chat from people viewing your stream. You can then archive your streams and share them.Twitch marketing boss Matthew DiPietro said: "Live broadcasting represents one of the most important shifts in the way people play games."Twitch has quickly found a home on consoles, so by partnering with Gameloft to launch the first streaming-enabled mobile game brings us one step closer to being everywhere that gamers are. Also, being integrated into Asphalt 8: Airborne, one of the highest rated mobile games, should ensure it resonates with our community."Twitch functionality is currently optimised for iPhone 5S, iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display, and will be live as part of the game's third update.

If you've been waiting to give LINE's Call service a try, now's your chance -- so long as you live in the right country, anyway. Those using LINE's Android app in Colombia, Japan, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand and the US can dial most any phone number at rates that might well beat what their carriers would offer. Americans get one of the best deals: their calls start at 2 cents per minute using prepaid credit, and they can pay 70 cents per month for an hour's worth of talk time. The Chinese will get a similar bargain when Call reaches them in the near future, and LINE-to-LINE conversations are always free. There's no iOS support yet, but we wouldn't be shocked if the corresponding app update arrives relatively soon.

Apple doesn't talk about how many iPhone 5c devices it sells, but the rumors are that it's not doing as well as its two siblings. According to leaked documents from O2 Germany, Cupertino is looking to boost its middle child by launching an 8GB version that'll retail for 60 euros less than the current 16GB model. What does this spell for the "bottom tier" iPhone 4S, which is currently offered to customers for free on two-year deals? We couldn't possibly speculate, but if this trimmed-down hardware is appearing in Germany, it's probably going to launch everywhere else in the world, too.

The annual Game Developers Conference descends on San Francisco this week, and Google's wasting no time in sharing its news. For gamers, Mountain View's said it'll be launching a "game gifts" service for sending in-game swag to other players, and increasing the number of game categories in the Play store to 18 in the hope you'll stumble upon titles you might like easier. More important, however, is what devs can do with the new features of Google Play game services, a back-end tool for managing leaderboards, achievements and more in Android, iOS or web games. Multiplayer support has been added for iOS games, and via an update to the Unity plug-in, cross-platform multiplayer between Android and iOS devices is now possible. These features have to be implemented by developers, of course, but next time you see that friend who's always arguing the merits of one mobile OS over another, you might just be able to settle the discussion in-game instead.

After receiving reports of VGB-Android 4.1 not being able to restore saved states, I have found a bug, accidentally introduced when adding MMM01 mapper support, that affected state restore process. I have just released the bugfixed VGB-Android 4.1.1:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.vgb
If you are a VGB user, please, upgrade as soon as the new version becomes available from the Google Play Store. If you are still unable to restore from a previously saved state, reset emulation by selecting "Reset" from the menu. Sorry for the trouble: these things happen now and then.

Multi system emulator for Windows/Wii/GC/PS3/XBOX/XBOX360/Android has been updated. Changes:
Cores:
- Mupen64 – W coordinate for vertices now properly set according to per-game depth bias. Should fix most of the texture wobbling issues in games.
- Mupen64 – Fixed ‘No Controller connected’ issue in Banjo-Tooie.
- Mupen64 – Uses refactored audio RSP plugin, includes numerous fixes such as improved MusyX support, etc.
- Mupen64 – Glide64 refactoring - Optimized dither noise code – is now done on the GPU entirely.
- Mupen64 – Glide64 refactoring – codebase has been cleaned up significantly, code duplication cut down on.
- Mupen64 – (Non-mobile versions) – Three-point filtering option instead of just bilinear filtering. The N64 used an inferior form of bilinear filtering called 3-sample (or 3-point) filtering. Textures were made with this in mind so many look a lot better with point filtering vs. bilinear.
- Screenshot comparison here: http://imgur.com/a/M9nRP
- Genesis Plus GX – Aspect ratio changes are now applied correctly.
- Genesis Plus GX – Other changes.
- Mednafen VB – Added Core Options for Virtual Boy – Anaglyph/Palette.
- Mednafen (All) – Should correctly save SRAM to save directory now.
- SNES9x – Memory leak fixes and some other improvements.
- Nestopia – Core updates.
3DEngine – New core. A combination of all other 3D tech demos so far along with advanced libretro features like camera support, GPS/location services, etc. Can also be used to display still pictures (JPEG/PNG). JPEG support is buggy right now.
- VBA-M – Adds Code Breaker/Game Shark support (by using cheat files).
FBA core – No more hardcoded 1024×1024 frame buffer – is now set dynamically. Should in most cases free up around 3MB of system RAM.
RetroArch PlayStation3:
- Analog input works now – cores that support RETRO_ANALOG (such as TyrQuake) should now have working DualShock controls.
- Analog mapping to D-pad works now for all cores.
- Optimized slimmed down GL driver implementation some more, resulting in even lower video latency.
- All the changes made to RGUI since the last release (Core Information, reorganized Settings, possible to map frontend actions to gamepad buttons/analog axes, etc)
RetroArch Xbox 360:
- Threaded Auto SRAM save should be available now.
- Reimplemented the menu – now uses the common menu code.
- XUI GUI no longer is bound to the game’s viewport – so it should no longer cut off when using certain aspect ratios.
- It’s now possible to go back a directory level in the file browser.
- It’s now possible to change path options.
- Analog input works now – cores that support RETRO_ANALOG (such as TyrQuake) should now have working DualShock controls.

RetroArch GX – Gamecube/Wii:
- More screen resolutions.
- Overlay support.
- Faster blitting – inlined lots of GX functions.
RetroArch Xbox 1:
- Threaded Auto SRAM save should be available now.
- Core Detection should work properly now.
- Aspect ratio options are fixed.
- Integer scaling should work correctly now.
- Soft filter/flicker filtering should work correctly now.
- Analog input works now – cores that support RETRO_ANALOG (such as TyrQuake) should now have working DualShock controls.
- Analog mapping to D-pad works now for all cores.
- All the changes made to RGUI since the last release (Core Information, reorganized Settings, possible to map frontend actions to gamepad buttons/analog axes, etc)
RetroArch OSX:
- Joypads should work now.
- Analog mapping to D-pad works now for all cores.

RetroArch Android:
- Should fix App Not Responding issue that happened with overlays and threaded video.
- All the changes made to RGUI since the last release (Core Information, reorganized Settings, possible to map frontend actions to gamepad buttons/analog axes, etc).

Ryan Payton's earnest story of Republique's formative days – roughly 600 of them – has a surprising villain. "When you have a vision, sometimes things just don't work out," said Payton, a co-founder of developer Camouflaj. For its first 500 nights of life, Republique, the one-touch stealth game for tablets and phones, just wasn't coming together.
Speaking to attendees at the Game Developers Conference, Payton described a frustrating time in which his team of 25 game makers struggled to reach their publicized (and Kickstarted) vision of Republique. It was to be a tense but accessible game, hinged on players guiding a woman out of a cell and away from an intrusive, spying regime. Its forced simplicity led to complications, however, putting its mechanics in conflict with everything from level design to lazy touchscreen swipes. But conflict also helped Republique find its footing.
"We decided that we were just going to become the game's worst enemy," Payton said. "We started to bash the game really hardcore." The team got serious about playtesting, and carefully monitored how people were naturally inclined to interact with the game, rather than how Camouflaj decreed in its one-touch vision. "We watched how players were playing the game, and we met them halfway," Payton said. And lazy, misread screen swipes? Camouflaj created its own version of aim assist, but for fingers.

Apple has announced changes to its iPhone and iPad ranges.
The firm has launched an 8GB version of the iPhone 5C while simultaneously bringing back the previously discontinued 16GB iPad 4 and officially retiring the three-year-old iPad 2.
The 8GB iPhone 5C is currently being sold in Apple’s European online stores for £429, making it £40 cheaper than the 16GB model. It is expected to become available in the US at some point today.
The 16GB iPad 4 has relaunched worldwide after being removed from the range after the release of the iPad Air in October.
The iPad 2 has been available since then, but it seems Apple has decided to bump up its entry level iPad to a device featuring more memory and the firm’s A6X chip.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 6 this year. Rumours for the device include a 4.7-inch display with 1600x900 resolution and atmospheric pressure, temperature and humidity sensors.

The iOS version of Microsoft Office is ready to release, it has been claimed.
Reuters, citing “people close to the companyâ€, reported that a full iPhone and iPad version of the productivity suite is ready for launch, with its launch only requiring the approval of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
The development of the software for mobile platforms had been intensified by Microsoft in response to a growing number of competitor apps, the sources added.
"We have some pretty exciting plans," said Office marketing executive John Case regarding the launch.
"Certainly, interest in Office on the iPad is extreme. When [customers] want to do real work, they are going to want to use Office."
"Office is being disenfranchised on the hottest growth platforms," commented analyst Rick Sherlund of Nomura.
"Maybe it is time to focus on Office independent of Windows."
"Look at the applications that are on the rise to support mobile. It is not Microsoft OneNote or Word. It's Dropbox, or Evernote," added Ted Schadler, an analyst at research firm Forrester, on the growing rivals Microsoft's aging software is facing.
"It's really about being everywhere. That's an important, immediate decision that Satya's going to have to drive."

There's less than a month to go before Samsung launches its new flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone worldwide on 11 April, and the new device has still not gone into mass production due to camera module manufacturing problems. The 16 megapixel camera module consists of six plastic pieces, one more piece than in the existing 13 megapixel camera modules in the Galaxy S4. The problem that Samsung is having is that even though the number of plastic pieces has gone up, the thickness of each piece has remained the same, so in order to fit the new camera module into the Galaxy S5, the lens makers will likely have to develop new technology to make thinner lenses. Not only that, joining six pieces together instead of five for the 13 megapixel camera modules increases the risk of optical faults surfacing at the lens manufacturers' plants dramatically.

A new word puzzle game made by lone Irish dev Shane McCafferty is currently topping the word game charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
Word Forward, which is free-to-play and published by AppyNation, was released last Thursday as is currently ranked No.1 in its category in both the UK and US, as well as in ten other countries.
As of yesterday (March 17th) users had played over 700,000 games in the single player mode as well as “thousands†in multiplayer.
McCafferty, now based in Canada, has previously worked on hits such as Jetpack Journey and also been involved in projects for consumer games sites like Eurogamer, VG247 and Videogamer.
“What I want is to keep doing what I love and have loved since childhood – making games. My expectations are just that. Keep a roof over our heads and get to make the next game. Simples,†he told MCV.
“There'll be an update to Word Forward soon to address some minor launch issues. The usual post-launch tidy. Beyond that we'll see how the game continues to do.
McCafferty is currently working on an upcoming baseball title in conjunction with US baseball player Dirk Hayhurst.

An 8GB version of the supposedly ‘budget’ iPhone 5C is now available.
The SKU this morning appeared on Apple and mobile operator websites and is priced at £429 standalone. The existing 16GB (£469) and 32GB (£549) models are still available.
Apple has never published official sales date for the 5C but the belief is that it has fallen short of expectations and consistently lagged behind the numbers enjoyed by the ‘full-fat’ iPhone 5S.
The most common criticism is that the 5C, which from the beginning has been pitched as the budget iPhone option, remains too expensive, particularly as it is technically almost identical to the aging iPhone 5.

Sure, a few eager Amazon shoppers might have been enjoying the Chromecast on the other side of the pond, more or less straight after it launched in the US. However, those Europeans waiting for an official retail channel, (as suspected) your time has finally come. Google just announced that its popular media streaming TV accessory will be available for customers in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland starting today and will cost £30. Naturally you can purchase via the Play store, but Amazon will be stocking also. If you prefer things a little more bricks and mortar, and live in the UK, they're also coming to Curry's -- if you hadn't already heard -- and PC World. With the official release in new territories of course comes region specific apps, led by the BBC's ubiquitous iPlayer which will now play nice with the HDMI dongle. All these new customers, just in time for the inevitable wave of apps, too. It's almost like they plan these things...

Google's Sundar Pichai said that Chromecast would be available in many more countries this month, and it now appears that this worldwide launch could be close at hand. Engadget reader Martin has noticed that big UK retail chain Currys is already listing the TV media stick, with nary an official announcement in sight. The company says it's out of stock, but there's a plausible £30 ($50) price tag in place. While the entry doesn't give any clues as to when the Chromecast would reach the country, Google has less than two weeks to make good on its word -- we'd reckon that the device arrives sooner rather than later.

Activision's library of downloadable song DLC for Guitar Hero, DJ Hero and Band Hero will be taken offline at the end of this month, the publisher has announced.
The Guitar Hero mobile game will also be removed from sale on 31st March.Servers for the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 games will stay online, however, and any tracks you have already purchased will of course be unaffected."We want to thank all of you for supporting Guitar Hero over the last nine years," Activision wrote in a statement posted to the official Guitar Hero Facebook page."To celebrate this great community, selected songs and tracks will be available for as much as a 50 per cent discount on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii from now until the end of the month. For more information, please visit the store on your console."Guitar Hero and its spin-off franchises remain in limbo, with no new games on the horizon. Activision previously admitted not treating the franchise with the right amount of "nurturing and care" needed to sustain long-term sales. The long-since-cancelled Guitar Hero 7 would have removed the franchise's band support and instead focused on a new six-string guitar peripheral. The project was canned before ever seeing the light of day.

The first game in the Shin Megami Tensei series has been released on the iOS App Store.
Originally released in October 1992, Shin Megami Tensei was a SNES RPG that was never officially sold outside of Japan.
This iOS version, therefore, marks the first time the game has ever been officially translated and sold in the western world.
To celebrate its launch, publisher Atlus is offering the game at a reduced price for a limited time, making it available for £3.99 / €5.49 / $5.99 until March 31, at which point the price will be increased.
The original Shin Megami Tensei is set in the year 199X and begins with a horde of demons coming to Earth. The Japanese leader decides to use these demons as a military weapon, causing America to retaliate.
The player, who is nameless, has the ability to speak to demons and recruit them to battle for him. The choice, then, is whether to create an army of demons and take over the world, or an army of angels to stop them.
The series continues to grow in popularity 22 years after the first game's release, with over 30 titles and spin-offs based on the Megami Tensei universe.
These include the Persona and Devil Summoner series, which have been particularly popular in the west.
Last year Nintendo announced Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, a crossover game coming to 3DS as the result of a collaboration between Atlus and Intelligent Systems.

The verdict on virtual reality seems to be in: the future of the technology is in fully immersive, face bound ski-goggles that block out your physical perceptions in favor of digitally created wonderlands. Well, unless you're looking at Seebright's AR/VR head-mounted display prototype. The company brought an early version of its developing headgear to GDC and it's.. well, very different. Unlike the hardware we've seen from Sony, Oculus and GameFace, Seebright's headgear leaves the user's peripheral wide-open by suspending a smartphone above their field of view and reflecting it in front of them with a low-hanging mirror. To be honest, it's a little bizarre.

Google's Android Studio is a development tool for Android based on the IntelliJ IDEA platform, one that managed to attract a lot of hype when it rolled out in mid-2013. Roughly a year later, the platform is still in 'early access preview,' and work on it is ongoing. Eclipse, on the other hand, is the granddaddy of IDEs; although it doesn't offer native Android support, it does have some nice tools to help you build Android applications—one such tool is the Google Plugin for Eclipse, made by Google.Developer and editor Jeff Cogswell compares Eclipse and its Google-made Google Plugin with Google's own Android Studio, developed with the help of the people who make IntelliJ IDEA. His verdict? Eclipse is beginning to show its age, especially when it comes to Android development, while Android Studio offers some noted benefits. 'Android Studio is still in preview mode, without an official release, even if that preview is in pretty fine shape—its status certainly shouldn't prevent you from using it, at least in my opinion,' he writes. Do you agree?"

That update for the company’s SDK lets iOS developers bring their games to over one billion additional devices worldwide.
Marmalade Juice – the company’s cross-platform technology has been added to its SDK, meaning iOS developers can now port their games to the vast Android market.
Juice will be included in all Marmalade licenses and from now, for a limited time the annual community license is free.
The release is good news to developers who find themselves locked into developing for just the iOS ecosystem, being unable to increase their market reach cross-platform.
Harvey Elliott, CEO Marmalade Technologies Ltd, said: Adding Marmalade Juice to our powerful SDK means that at last developers have an easy way to extend from iOS to the now dominant Android market, using technology from a company that has grown up with mobile gaming.â€
Developers who use the platform will benefit from working within the cross-platform SDK, such as maintaining a single codebase and the option to target other platforms in the future.
Elliott continued: “The release of Marmalade Juice underlines the long established aims of Marmalade in ensuring that operating across platforms can be a sustainable strategy for the developer and the industry as a whole.â€

Armello spent eight months as a paper prototype, and the team at Australian studio League of Geeks did its best to throw the appeal of a board game onto the screen – including the dice. Armello is a turn-based, strategy RPG complete with skill cards and four playable clans: rabbit, rat, bear and wolf. It's in development for PC and mobile.
Armello has a rich fantasy backstory and matching 3D art: The king, a lion, has a disease called "rot" and he's going mad, locked inside of his castle and protected by minions, high walls and his own skills. The game supports solo and multiplayer modes, online and local (with multiple devices), and it has a day-night cycle that transforms the battlefield from deep greens to dark purples throughout players' turns.

Mojang, development studio behind the wildly-successfulMinecraft, has continued its five-year trend of increased profitability. Mojang revenue topped$237 million in 2012, while a Wall Street Journal article reports that number to have hit $326 million for 2013, which in turn translates to almost $128 million in profit.
Roughly 93 percent of the company's money was made from Minecraft, split fairly even across platforms: 38 percent from the PC version, 30 percent from console versions and 25 percent from mobile versions.
Minecraft creator Marcus "Notch" Persson, who still owns the rights to the Minecraft IP, was the single-largest expense for Mojang; the company paid out approximately $129 million in license fees to Persson last year.

GDC 2014: Extreme Reality also releases design tool SuperPose to ease integration of new poses
Full body motion control SDK Extreme Motion has been released on Android.
The tech is designed to enable players to use the camera on their phone to track their body movements, with gestures acting as a control input, somewhat similar to how Microsoft's Kinect peripheral works.
Extreme Motion is already available on Windows and iOS. The tool can be licenced through a revenue share agreement.
Games that have previously harnessed the motion tracking tech include Sega's Go Dance, Side-Kick's Top Smash Tennis and Indie Hero's ShadowBoxer.
Creator Extreme Reality has also released a new design tool called SuperPose to make the process of designing and integrating new poses and motions into a game faster.
“With this release of the Android SDK, Extreme Motion is now available to all of the major operating systems, including iOS, Android and Windows, and the hundreds of different devices on these platforms,†said Extreme Reality CEO Sarit Firon.
“Motion games and apps can now reach almost anyone using a tablet, smartphone or PC, as well as Android consoles and smart TVs.â€

Mobile sensation Flappy Bird is to return to the App Store, says the game's creator.
When asked by a fan on Twitter whether the hit title would be available for download again one day, Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen said "Yes. But not soon".
He later clarified that the new Flappy Bird would not be the same as the original, but "a better one".
The hugely popular mobile title was pulled from the App Store and Google Play last month despite topping the App Store downloads chart following intense scrutiny of the title.
Nguyen claimed he did not pull the game due to legal reasons.
"I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore," he tweeted.
He added: "It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore. I also don't sell 'Flappy Bird', please don't ask. And I still make games."

Battery-saving software on a phone tends to have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer -- it either waits until you're low on power to do anything, or limits functionality at all times. Apple may eventually take a smarter approach, if a newly published patent application is any indication. The technique would optimize your mobile device's power consumption based on both your daily activities and charging patterns. If your iPhone doesn't get much use during working hours, for instance, it could automatically throttle down for that period. The technology also adjusts power for specific events; check into a long flight and your phone will conserve battery while you're in the air. We don't know if Apple will ever use this energy-saving technology, but the patent is grounded more firmly in reality thanothers we've seen.

Looks like the embargo is officially up on Samsung Galaxy S5 pricing. After AT&Trevealed earlier today that it'll sell the new flagship phone for $200 on-contract, T-Mobile chimed in to say it will offer the device for no money down, with pre-orders beginning next week, on March 24th. Of course, anyone who knows anything about T-Mobile's UnCarrier pricing plans knows that doesn't mean "free" -- it means you're committing to 24 subsequent monthly payments. So, if you're already sweet on the GS5's Band-Aid-like stylings, and know you prefer T-Mo, you'll want to sign up first thing on Monday.

When the Kindle Fire HDX landed last fall, it hit with a handful of new features, strong hardware upgrades and, unfortunately, a $20 price hike over the previous model. If you waited, your patience paid off: Best Buy is currently knocking $30 off the total, making up for the increased MSRP and then some. The 7-inch Fire has actually flirted with this price a few times this year, but if you're money's burning a hole in your pocket, it's flaunting its steepest discount right now

Sprint's getting the Galaxy S5, too. And like fellow underdog T-Mobile, the carrier plans to offer Samsung's flagship handset for no dinero upfront on its Easy Pay plan. Which means, you still have to pay, but just in 24 monthly increments. Those pre-orders begin today for folks visiting Sprint's retail stores -- that is if you can still find one that isn't shuttered -- and begin shipping on April 11th. And to sweeten the pot a little for those that aren't entirely sold on the GS5, Sprint's even tossing in zippy 4G LTE for subs that live in Spark markets, as well as a "free" Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 for qualifying Framily (ugh, that word!) members. Though note you'll have to open a separate two-year agreement to get it.
But there's even more Samsung gadgetry on the way. On the same day the GS5 becomes available, Sprint will also add Samsung's new line of Gear smartwatches -- the Gear 2/Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit -- to its portfolio. As a relatively low-end impulse buy, you'll be able to get the Neo and Fit for $200, while the more "luxe" Gear 2 will go for $300.

At Sony Mobile's HQ in Tokyo, Kichiro Kurozumi is itching to go into detail about the new flagship Xperia Z2. The VP says it's "all in the details." We really hope so, because it's getting increasingly hard to tell Sony's recent smartphone iterations apart, especially when it comes to the Xperia Z2 and Z1. Kurozumi emphatically states that it's all the work done behind the scenes (reengineered frame, a 20.7-megapixel camera that records in 4K) that makes the Z2 stand out. "2014 is about premium smartphones, tablets and the smartwear experience but we... Sony has to do it differently."
Take the Xperia Z2's 4K-recording camera sensor. Sony's certainly not the onlysmartphone maker with a device capable of recording video in Ultra HD, but Kurozumi reckons the company's software-based "SteadyShot" stabilization keeps the Xperia Z2 ahead of the pack. Because of the relatively large camera sensor, it can compensate for more movement than its rivals -- up to 21 percent. He offers up a professional-level clip and his own real-world sample from a few weeks earlier in Barcelona, and (courtesy of a 4K Sony TV in the room) the level of detail is noticeably beyond that of 1080p video, but won't the lack of 4K screens (UHD TVs are still pretty rare) limit the usefulness? We asked Kurozumi exactly that.

Currently, any game on the Android-powered Ouya microconsole must be free in some way, shape or form, be it a free demo or free to play business model. That situation is set to change next month, when the Little Console That Coulddrops its free-to-try requirement.
Polygon reports that Ouya head of developer relations Kellee Santiago announced the shift at this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. "In response to developer feedback, in order to give more flexibility to game-makers to decide what content they want to make on Ouya, starting April we're making the free-to-try component optional," Santiago said.
The Ouya team also announced that games "exclusive" to the Ouya can launch concurrently on PC as well, thanks to changes made in developer agreement deals. This follows the company's recent branching out, which will allow Ouya content on devices that are not an Ouya console.

CD Projekt, developers of The Witcher series and upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, are working on an unannounced mobile game. A company management report obtained and translated by Eurogamer states that the game is being developed in conjunction with an external partner, and is planned to launch this year.
It's not clear whether this mobile-focused project will be tied to the upcomingThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Witcher series as a whole, Cyberpunk 2077, or if it will be something else entirely. Eurogamer was told that an official announcement was coming "very soon," and that said announcement would also coincide with a beta launch.

Terraria, Re-Logic's 2D sandbox adventure game, surpassed a combined 1.3 million full-game downloads on iOS and Android. The game first arrived on iOS in August 2013 and on Android in September. Additionally, publisher 505 Games announced that Terraria recently achieved one million downloads in total across Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita, the latter of which arrived in December.
Andrew Spinks, the creator of Terraria, first divulged plans for the game's sequel in October, but was careful to note that it wasn't in development at the time. Spinks later said he'd like to code Terraria 2 in a more portable language so he can bring the game to multiple platforms closer to its PC launch, though Nintendo's 3DS is likely not in the cards for the sequel.

Oppo Electronics has taken off the wraps on its first LTE phone, and it packs more technology than most if not all laptops. The Find 7 is a 5.5" phone and is the first to support 2560 x 1440 resolution [538 PPI] (by comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has 441 PPI). 'Another striking and unique feature of the phone is its 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor,' writes blogger Andy Patrizio. 'This is Qualcomm's first chip to feature its Gobi True 4G LTE World Mode, supporting LTE FDD, LTE TDD, WCDMA, CDMA1x, EV-DO, TD-SCDMA and GSM4. Translation: this phone will work on LTE all over the world.'"

Konami has dived head-first into the mobile gaming waters with Chain of Souls, an iOS game that blends elements of the puzzle and card battle genres. Using the touchscreen, players must link together three or more runes of the same color to form a chain and attack their opponent; the more runes you link, the more damaging the attack.
Simple, right? That's where Chain of Souls' cards come into play.
Should you manage to form three or more chains, you can play a card. These cards have a variety of effects, such as reducing the damage you take or increasing the damage you deal. Your cards can also have relationships with other cards in your deck, which can boost their power even further.
The game is free to play, and available now via iTunes.

The first deep look into the security of the Android patch installation process, specifically its Package Management Service (PMS), has revealed a weakness that puts potentially every Android device at risk for privilege escalation attacks. Researchers from Indiana University and Microsoft published a paper that describes a new set of Android vulnerabilities they call Pileup flaws, and also introduces a new scanner called SecUP that detects malicious apps already on a device lying in wait for elevated privileges. The vulnerability occurs in the way PMS handles updates to the myriad flavors of Android in circulation today. The researchers say PMS improperly vets apps on lower versions of Android that request OS or app privileges that may not exist on the older Android version, but are granted automatically once the system is updated.
The researchers said they found a half-dozen different Pileup flaws within Android's Package Management Service, and confirmed those vulnerabilities are present in all Android Open Source Project versions and more than 3,500 customized versions of Android developed by handset makers and carriers; more than one billion Android devices are likely impacted, they said."Handily enough, the original paper is not paywalled.

Ouya head of developer relations, Kellee Santiago, has confirmed that Ouya will be removing its requirement for devs to include a free demo for all titles on the console come April. Broken Age is already out on Steam, but its console launch will remain loyal to Ouya for six months.
The announcement came during a GDC panel attended by Eurogamer. When asked if this was a highly demanded feature, Santiago told us that it was and that certain genres don't lend themselves well to demos. "The requests were coming from them that it was restrictive for certain kinds of content that they were interested in bringing to Ouya," she told us in an interview. "Not every genre lends itself to having a demo or a tracked section or microtransactions."For example, she said that the console manufacturer would be bringing text-based Twine games to the platform and was in talks with prolific indie developer Anna Anthropy about porting some of her more controversial works.Santiago further confirmed that Broken Age is coming to the platform with six month console exclusivity. When asked when this would happen, she said the first episode would be out around the time the second episode hits Steam, while the second episode will follow at an unannounced time. When asked about Ouya's advantage over the competition now that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo also allow self-publishing, Santiago noted that Ouya is a more "iterative" platform than its competitors and lends itself to a more experimental development philosophy."We're serving an audience that wants a more iterative platform," she said. "That's evolved into incorporating players into their alphas and betas. And Ouya is a great platform to support that, because it's so easy to publish on and so easy to update. So you can quickly put up new versions and get feedback on it in a way that you can't really do on consoles.""There are so many indie developers that want to make a lot of money, get very famous, make a living, but also developers that want to experiment with new ideas, that want to create art outside of a commercial paradigm. That want to just make games, because the activity of making games is an extension of their hobby of playing games. Ouya's perfect for that because I can have an idea today, I could prototype it tonight, then I could have it on Ouya tomorrow. There's really no other way to do that."

The budget didn't bring tax breaks, and it may also bring about the end of the 69p game - and cheaper online purchases - by closing a sneaky tax loophole. The new budget means games and entertainment will be taxed according to the laws of the country they're bought in. So if you're buying something from the UK on the App Store or from Amazon then you'll pay 20 per cent VAT, reported the Guardian. As MCV calculated, a 69p app will creep up to 79p; a £6.99 Steam game will rise to £8; and a £34.99 full-priced release will be £40.It should level the playing field between bricks and mortar shops and places like Amazon, and it'll also mean £300m earned for our government. The changes will take effect at the start of the new year.

"Canonical is producing a version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution specifically for smartphones, but Richard Tynan, writing for PrivacyInternational.org, recently pointed out that the baseband in Ubuntu-powered phones will remain proprietary. ... Some have criticized Canonical for missing an opportunity to push for a fully Open Source smartphone, but in order to fix this problem (and open up the code for this super-critical bit of software), we need companies that have a large amount of clout, in the smartphone market, to make it a priority. Canonical (with Ubuntu) just doesn't have that clout yet. They're just now dipping their toes into the smartphone waters. But you know who does have that clout? Google.
Google has made a point of touting Open Source (at least sometimes), and they are the undisputed king of the smartphone operating system world. And yet I hear no big moves by Google to encourage phone manufacturers to utilize Open Source baseband firmware, such as OsmocomBB. So has Canonical missed an opportunity? No. Not yet. If (some may say 'when') Ubuntu gains a critical amount of market share in the phone world, that will be their chance to pressure manufacturers to produce a truly Open Source phone. Until then, Canonical needs to continue to work within the world we have today."

Android however dominate in 67 of the 101 countries where data is tracked.
Apple devices significantly dominate web browsing in many countries, attracting 65.26 per cent of traffic in the UK alone, with just seven phone models, reports dotMobi.
Of the 101 countries across the world where data is tracked iOS lead in 34, where as Android comes out on top in 67 nations.
Central Europe has proved to be a strong hold for Android with Germany Austria, Hungary and Switzerland showing noticeably higher Android usage.
Eileen O’Sullivan, COO at dotMobi, said: “Although Apple has a stronghold across major markets across the globe, its dominance is not guaranteed. Apple is undoubtedly an aspirational brand, which delivers great products, however the cost of its devices may mean it loses market shared in the long tail.â€
Apple does remain strong, even with a smaller range of handsets, however it remains behind other manufacturers such as Samsung, who have the hold on other major mobile markets such as the US, Brazil and China.
O’Sullivan concluded: “Consumers may prefer to purchase a cheaper and trusted local brand that can deliver a similar user experience and functionality – but without the hefty price tag. If so, Apple’s future position as market leader may be at risk.â€

High-flying iOS motorcycle stunt sim Joe Danger: Infinity offers a new daily challenge mode in its latest update, developer Hello Games told Joystiq today.
Similar to the daily challenge modes featured in games like Spelunky andOlliOlli, Joe Danger: Infinity's once-a-day challenges pit all players against unique multifaceted level layouts every 24 hours. Scores are tracked both cumulatively and for individual levels -- committed players will rack up larger amounts of coins with every session, giving extra incentive to return to the mode on a daily basis.
Hello Games additionally notes that Joe has crashed a total of 2,268,112 times across all Joe Danger: Infinity play sessions, as of earlier today. If you want to know what dying feels like, you should ask Joe -- he's suffered roughly 1,700 deaths every hour since the game's launch in January.

Human Element, the first-personal survival game from Robert Bowling's studio, Robotoki, will launch in November 2015 on PC, Bowling confirmed on Twitter. He added that the Ouya-bound prequel to the game was canceled "early on" as the developer shifted its focus to the CryEngine-based PS4 and Xbox One versions of the open-world game, which don't currently have a release date.
Bowling left Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward in April 2012 to open Robotoki and announced Human Element in June 2012. The Ouya prequel was revealed soon after in July, at which point Bowling donated $10,000 to the microconsole manufacturer. The Human Element prequel was also slated to be the first console exclusive game for Ouya.

Trials Frontier, one of the two upcoming games in the motorcycle-flipping series from developer RedLynx, will launch April 10 on iOS. The mobile entry in the series will roll to Android at a later, undisclosed date.
Being the first Trials game on iOS and Android isn't Frontier's only departure for RedLynx, as the game is also set in a futuristic wild-west environment "after the fall of the Trials Fusion universe." Players unlock small villages that are all that remain of civilization in Frontier as well as new motorcycles, characters and upgrades for their bikes. Those that connect the game with Trials Fusionwill receive bonus gear as well.

Florida men plead guilty to distributing 1 million Android apps worth more than $700,000
The US Department of Justice today announced its first convictions for pirating mobile apps with the guilty pleas of two Florida men accused of running the unauthorized Android marketplace Appbucket. According to the government, the two distributed "more than one million copies of copyrighted apps with a total retail value of more than $700,000."
The two men, 26-year-old Nicholas Anthony Narbone of Orlando and 21-year-old Thomas Allen Dye of Jacksonville, each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement. Dye is set for sentencing June 12, with Carbone's sentencing to follow on July 8.
"The Criminal Division has made fighting intellectual property crime a top priority, and these convictions demonstrate our determination to prosecute those who undermine the innovations of others in new technologies," Acting Assistant Attorney General David A. O'Neil said in a statement.
According to the Department of Justice, Appbucket operated from August of 2010 to August of 2012. The group's Twitter account has been dormant since May of 2012, when it said it was rebuilding its server and would be online again in a couple weeks. Earlier that year, the group said it was "working on our sources of legit Android apps."

Yep, if you have a HTC One Mini, you'll likely get your Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC Senses 5.5 update starting today if this post by carrier AT&T is to be believed. The update will bring a number of improvements, like an enhanced dialer app, new navigation bars, a full-screen immersive mode, a new BlinkFeed app and more. So go on, head into Settings and download the latest System Update to get with the times. That is, if you're not tempted to get a whole new phone altogether.

Android has a lot of market share, but it doesn't have a big footprint in the corporate world; outside of special efforts like Samsung's Knox, the OS isn't well-suited to business demands. All that may change in the near future, though, asThe Information's sources claim that the next major Android release will place a much stronger emphasis on office-grade security. The new OS will reportedly allow apps that require their own authentication (including biometrics), as well as data storage on secure chips. It should also offer better remote management controls. If the rumor is accurate, we may not have long to wait to see these suit-and-tie features -- Google could unveil them at its I/O conference in late June.

Offering a rare interview in the run-up to another legal fray between Samsung and Apple, the senior engineer behind the iPhone has explained where it all started, part of Apple's plan to communicate how groundbreaking the original iPhone was.Talking to the WSJ, Greg Christie explained how the secret project, Purple, brought the iPhone to life. At some point, the former Apple boss told him straight: the team had two weeks, or he would assign the project elsewhere. "Steve had pretty much had it... He wanted bigger ideas and bigger concepts." In the end, the "shockingly small" team had outlined a touchscreen phone with swipe-to-unlock, no physical keyboard and all the music-playing features of the company's iPod series. They ran early software tests on a plastic touchscreen, hooked up to a dated desktop Mac [seen above] -- an effort to emulate a low-powered mobile processor.

Although mobile gaming still only accounts for 28 per cent of the total market, it is the fastest growing segment, increasing by 17 per cent in the last five years.
This is compared to online gaming that increased from 21 per cent to 31 per cent, and disc-based gaming which experience a decline from 68 per cent to 41 per cent, repots Strategy Analytics.
Eric Smith, analyst at Stratedy Analytics, commented: “We anticipate a large and sustainable market globally for some years yet, particularly in North America and Western Europe where they remain the bedrock of games spending – accounting for over twice the market share than in Asia.
“Console manufacturers, however, must continue to offer a differentiated and higher quality experience than is available on other devices such as handsets or tablets.â€
The number of people playing mobile games is expected to grow 14 per cent this year to 1.7 billion, and should pass the two billion mark by 2016.
Gartner predicted last year that mobile game revenue would actually double to $22 billion by 2015.
Smith continued: “While there are some structural concerns around the oversupply of cheap to free games – particularly on smartphones and tablets – the games industry ins in rude health.
“Humans have always played games, it’s up to the industry to provide the outlets which best match contemporary habits.â€

Popular first-person puzzle-shooter Portal is coming to Nvidia's Android-based handheld system, Shield. Nvidia is handling the adaptation, said to be a full port of the PC version of the game, with the blessing of Valve.
The Nvidia Shield launched in late July 2013 and our review of the system deemed it an "expensive novelty." Nvidia upped the system's PC streaming functions to 1080p and added button-mapping options in December.
While it is unclear whether Portal will make its way to the Google Play store for use on more Android devices, all signs point to its exclusivity on the Nvidia Shield. We've contacted Nvidia to clarify that point, and will update as we learn more.
Update: Nvidia informed Joystiq that Portal is a "native Android game," and will be sold on the Google Play store for use on other Android devices.

With many companies pursuingmobilecounterparts for established series, even monstrously-long JRPGs like Final Fantasy 6, we asked Animal Crossing series creator Katsuya Eguchi, through a translator, if there was any hesitation to do the same for Animal Crossing. After all, the relaxed nature of checking in with villagers and tending a town feels well-suited for a mobile device, especially in comparison to braving a 15-minute JRPG boss battle.
Eguchi reaffirmed the series' home on Nintendo hardware, pointing out that while some may enjoy Animal Crossing in short spurts, there are many that spend the time to meticulously organize their towns, down to the location of each and every flower. He also feels that the 3DS' inputs lend themselves to that style of gameplay better than the existing options on smartphones.
With that said, Eguchi did express interest in leveraging mobile devices in a way that could bring fans back to their primary Animal Crossing experience. He offered examples of hypothetical apps that would let you create clothing designs on the go, or serve as reminders of appointments made to hang out with the villagers in their town. Eguchi seems open to the idea of working with mobile devices, provided it's something that would inspire players to return to the central Animal Crossing experience more often.

Mobile developer Supercell will release a follow-up to its free-to-play hit, Clash of Clans, exclusively for iOS tomorrow, Apple announced.
Boom Beach expands on Clash of Clans' premise, challenging players to build a shoreline outpost and fortify it from enemy attacks. Like Clash of Clans, players can level up in Boom Beach by attacking other players' settlements, robbing them of gathered resources while advancing in the leaderboard ranks.
Developer Supercell announced last month that Clash of Clans earns over $650,000 in microtransaction revenue daily. Clash of Clans currently ranks as North America's single highest-grossing mobile app across all categories on both iTunes and Google Play.

Nvidia's Android-based handheld game system, Shield, will receive a temporary price drop for April, cutting the system by $50 to $199 for the month. The price cut is accompanied by new features arriving in a software update for the system next week, including a new user interface for the Shield's button-mapping feature. The addition lets players use the Shield's physical buttons for touch-based games on the Google Play store.
The hardware company will also add a beta version of its away-from-home game streaming support feature. Players will be able to remotely play PC games on their Shield, waking up and logging in to locked PCs while on the go. Additionally, the update will add bluetooth keyboard and mouse support for those that want to hook their Shields up to a TV to play on a bigger screen. Lastly, the Nvidia Shield will receive the latest version of the Android operating system, nicknamed KitKat (version 4.4.2).
Nvidia also recently revealed that Valve's popular first-person puzzler Portalwill receive a full PC port on Android with full Shield support.

Images of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 tablet have appeared online via the @evleaks Twitter account.
Everyone’s favourite tipster has posted two photos of the device. While no more information other than the name and the colour variants was revealed, looking at the images you can see the usual features – front facing camera, volume controls, microSD card sot, and sleep/wake button.
The screen says ‘swipe to unlock’, suggesting that the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 will not have a fingerprint sensor.
There is also a time and date on the screen – Thursday April 24th, 12.45pm – which may be a hint as to when the launch date is.
Other spec rumours include Android 4.4 KitKat, 1.2GHz quad-core processor and a 1280x800 WXGA TFT display.
Of course there's a chance the images are fake, but @evleaks has a pretty good track record. Previous image and render leaks that have turned out to be correct include Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Nokia’s Lumia 2520 tablet.

At an event in San Francisco today, Microsoft Office General Manager Julia White unveiled Office for iPad, featuring Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The new suite, which supports viewing but not editing for free, will go live in Apple's App Store at 11:00AM PDT (2:00PM EST). Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for iPad feature a ribbon interface just like the one featured in Office for Windows and OS X. The trio of apps are much more powerful on the tablet than the smartphone, but naturally aren't comparable to the desktop versions.

Today's Office news isn't all about the iPad. Microsoft now lets you use Office Mobile completely for free on both Android and the iPhone; if you're a home customer, you can both edit and read documents without paying for an Office 365 subscription. The gratis apps are ultimately meant to encourage use of the desktop and iPad clients, where you do need to pay for full access. Even so, it's hard to object to having another free tool for tweaking company reports while on the move.

Threes developer Sirvo LLC worked hard on its puzzle game phenomenon and it's non too happy about a series of clones popping up on the marketplace. To counter this worrying trend, the developer wrote an over 42K word blog post detailing the game's year-and-a-half development, explaining why a seemingly simple game like Threes is actually a ton of work to get the balance just right.
The developer noted that it first started seeing Threes clones 21 days after its 27th February release. It began with a game called 1024, while another game called 2048 followed suit with minimal changes to the formula. This was followed by the probably Mitchell & Webb copyright infringing Numberwang 2048. Things really came to a head when CNBC reported on the success of 2048, a game made in a weekend by the then 19 year old creator Gabriele Cirulli. The writer of said article failed to mention Threes, its clear inspiration."It's all in good fun, at least we'd like to think so, but try as our logical brains might, we still got the same 'cloning feeling'", the developer stated in its mammoth blog post that must have taken longer to write than 2048 took to make. "Especially when people called Threes, a game we poured over for nearly a year and a half, a clone of 2048. Others rifled off that they thought 2048 was a better game than Threes. That all stung pretty bad. We know Threes is a better game, we spent over a year on it. And obviously, Threes is the reason 2048 exists."Sirvo further explained that 2048 is an imbalanced game that's too easy to "break," whereas Threes' more intricate mechanics give it a lot more lasting value."We worked really hard to create a simple game system with interesting complexity that you can play forever. You know, 'simple to learn, impossible to master'. That old chess-nut."The Threes developer expressed frustration that most people, at a glance, won't be able to pick up on the subtle nuances that make Threes a better game - hence the 42K word blog post. "We want to celebrate iteration on our ideas and ideas in general. It's great. 2048 is a simpler, easier form of Threes that is worth investigation, but piling on top of us right when the majority of Threes players haven't had time to understand all we've done with our game's system and why we took 14 months to make it, well... that makes us sad.""We do believe imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but ideally the imitation happens after we've had time to descend slowly from the peak - not the moment we plant the flag," Sirvo added."Making these tiny games is littered with hard and painful times that are full of uncertainty and self-doubt. You never know if something is really going to work. It's not easy. But cloning or ripping off a design in a week, that's a bit different isn't it?" the developer concluded.Eurogamer contributor Mark Sorrells gave Threes top honours. "Threes is at once nicotine and soul food, magnificent and deadly, a machine for playing," he wrote in his Threes review. "It is flawed and broken and perfect and you must start playing it today."

FTL: Faster Than Light, the critically acclaimed spaceship management sim, will be available on iPad from April 3, developer Subset Games has revealed.
The $10 game is promised to match the same standards as the PC version (released in 2012) but will come with new content such as additional weapons, enemies, items and sectors.
This additional content will be added to the PC version for free via an "Advanced Edition" update.
"We are proud to say that the iPad version is a true equivalent to the PC in the experience it provides, which is why we are price matching to the PC version," Subset Games said.
FTL is also available on Mac and Linux. UK pricing was not announced.
The Advanced Edition additional features are outlined below:
- "Mind Control System: Temporarily turn enemies into allies. Force a boarder to repair the damage they just did, or have the enemy pilot sabotage their own helm."
- "Hacking System: Lockdown and disrupt enemy systems. Unique effects for each system, ranging from forcing a teleporter remove boarders to making the medbay damage instead of heal."
- "New Sector and Events: Our writer Tom Jubert has returned along with special guest writer Chris Avellone (of Planescape fame), who managed to find some time for us between his work on Project Eternity and Wasteland 2. They've been helping us add a new sector and scatter new events throughout the rest of the game."
- "New Weapons and Effects: Many new weapons that take advantage of new mechanics: overcharging to increase the number of volleys, stun effects to freeze crew, and area effect targeting, to name a few."
- "And more systems, drones, augments, enemy ships, enemy layouts, and hostile environments.

If you've wanted to know what Nokia's entry-level Lumia 630 looks like in real life, today is your lucky day. Both a Coolxap video (below) and a handful of photosfrom @Umit have shown off the smartphone in all its Windows Phone 8.1-based glory, including the on-screen navigation, Action Center and the updated camera interface. Previous rumors have suggested that the 630 will be relatively powerful for a low-end device with a 4.5-inch (albeit 800 x 480) display, a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM. Don't get too attached to the way the phone looks in these images, though. The 630 in the still pictures is likely using a protective case or prototype shell, and we wouldn't count on the video reflecting the final design, either. With that said, the new media may represent our best clue yet as to what Nokia might reveal at its event next week.

In commercial terms, BlackBerry's much-hyped BB10 phones barely made a dent. The manufacturer's financial health has actually been propped up this whole time by sales of its older classics, Bolds and Curves running on BB7. It's pretty incredible how long those models have lasted, but BlackBerry's latest earnings report reminds us that nothing lasts forever: BB7 sales have fallen 50 percent year-over-year to 2.3 million units, which is double BlackBerry 10 sales, but not nearly enough to help the company stay in the black. Of course, the collapse of legacy hardware isn't news to the CEO, John Chen, who has promised to support BB7 devices "for as long as there's demand," but who has also set about rebuilding BlackBerry as fast as he possibly can.

Smartphone games now account for 50 per cent of entire games market
The market for smartphone games in Japan almost doubled in size last year, reaching $5.4 billion in total sales.
According to data released by the Japanese internet firm CyberAgent, the domestic smartphone game market generated ¥546.8 billion ($5.4 billion) in 2013, an increase of 178 per cent over the ¥307.2 billion earned in the prior year.
And the smartphone market now represents a more significant percentage of the software market as a whole. In 2013, the entire Japanese software market was worth ¥1103.6 billion ($10.8 billion), so smartphone games accounted for around 50 per cent of the whole. In 2012, it was only 30 per cent.

However, this rate of growth is expect to slow over the next few years, rising to around $6.5 billion in value in 2014, $7.4 billion in 2015, and $8.2 billion in 2016.

If you've ever argued that your new smartphone is more reliable than what you're replacing, you now have some evidence to back up your claims. Crittercism hasposted a study showing that apps running in newer versions of Android and iOS (such as KitKat and iOS 7.1) are considerably less likely to crash; you're practically inviting headaches if you stick with a phone running Gingerbread or iOS 6. The research also suggests that the Galaxy S 4 and iPhone 5 are the most trustworthy devices, while tablets of all kinds are relatively crash-happy. The findings aren't shocking when both Apple and Google have both spent years fixing bugs, and it's notable that the study only covers crashes with third-party apps -- they don't address first-party software glitches. Still, this data is as good an excuse as any to upgrade an aging handset stuck on an old platform.

Although the Office for iPad suite is relatively full-featured, it won't print hard copies. That's a glaring omission even in this increasingly paperless era, we'd say. Not to worry, though: Microsoft tells PCWorld that printing support is coming as part of future app updates. The company hasn't said just when those upgrades are due, but Office general manager Julia White promises to "iterate very fast" on the fledgling productivity software. In the meantime, don't toss out your conventional PC -- you may need it to print out that next contract or term paper.

Apple has filed a patent for a new tablet smart cover that also features a keyboard, reminiscent of Microsoft's Surface tablets.
However, Apple's keyboard has multi-touch gesture support which can turn the whole cover into a trackpad - a 'smooth surface that overlays the plurality of keys'.
There is also part of the cover that can fold up to stand an iPad up, like Apple's current smart covers which are already on the market. Like the existing cover, the new one would also use embedded magnets to click into place at certain points.
Initial patent drawings show how the cover can fold up to protect both sides of an iPad or potentially other tablets.
So the smart cover's keyboard can communicate with the iPad wirelessly, meaning the user can control the iPad using its own touch-screen or the keyboard itself.
Apple's patent states that a gesture may involve the user pinching, sliding, swiping, rotating, flexing, dragging, tapping, pushing and releasing the keyboard, or doing other motion using their fingers or other object.

After spending a month in the lanes of Early Access, Warhammer 40k: Storm of Vengeance is lining up on iOS and PC users' Steam for an April 3 launch. Details for initial DLC packs have also been shared, outlining three additional unit types for developer Eutechnyx's lane defender.
The Ork Stormboy will supply aerial support, made possible by the "rokkit" strapped to its back. The Deathwing Terminator and the Dark Angel Dreadnought will also be available, the latter of which will contribute a "serious extra punch to the Dark Angels arsenal," according to a press release. Ork Clan Skins are also coming, expanding the Oak Warboss' selection of clans to include the Bad Moons and Death Skulls.
Each unit will be available at launch for both the iOS and PC versions, but prices have not been offered.

The Galaxy S5: powerhouse smartphone, fitness guru... baby monitor? Yes, you read that right. SoyaCincau has learned that Samsung's jack-of-all-trades Android flagship includes a "baby crying detector" mode that uses the phone as a listening station. If your child is upset, the GS5 sends a vibrating alert to your Gear watch(needed for the feature) that urges you to come to Junior's aid. You probably wouldn't want to lean on the detector too often -- Samsung certainly doesn't think it's a wise idea, as you can see from the massive legal disclaimer pictured here. Still, it could come in handy if you don't have a dedicated monitor and occasionally want to keep tabs on your tyke while you run around the home.

Google has issued revised rules for Google Play apps in its continuing effort to stayone step ahead of nefarious developers. This time, the primary target is apps with pop-up ads that spoof a system, service or app notification and trick you into clicking where you shouldn't. It's also cracking down on "promotion or install tactics" that cause downloads or Play store redirects without your say-so, along with apps that send unsolicited SMS ads. Finally, it's forbidding any the use of "erotic content" to promote pornography and forcing advertisers to clarify when and how they use in-app purchases. Google will allow developers a 15-day grace period before it drops the ban hammer -- by which point the bad guys will have likely found workarounds.

* Include sceKernelThread.h in less headers.
* Reduce some includes under GPU/.
* Fix performance issue in BlockCache due to an instance of std::vector in every block:
Avoid creating the vector when not necessary.
This was especially noticeable in debug mode.

Update some flags in GLES_GPU
* Update some flags in GLES_GPU.
It's useful to know if we need to have a correct PC value or downcount.

Shader ID optimizations and alpha test optimization
* Optimize ComputeVertexShaderID() a bit.
This is only like 1%. Along the way found and fixed an overlap of bits.
* Optimize ComputeFragmentShaderID() a bit.
I've seen it decently high on some profiles (1-2%). This cuts it down by
12.5% when used in a tight loop. The temporary was 8%, the ifs were the
other 4.5%.
* Optimize > and != 0 alpha tests.
There's no need to do rounding in this case. These are very common.
Also, if the test was !=, convert it to >, which may work better on
PowerVR.
* Merge pull request #5745 from sum2012/scempegbase-2

No matter how much we hope and pray, the legal wrangling between Apple and Samsung never seems to end. The latest court battle has Apple seeking up to $2 billion in damages from the Korean manufacturer for infringing on five patents, including tap to search and slide to unlock. This time around though, Samsung is looking to drag Google engineers into the courtroom to testify about the creation of Android -- including, potentially, Andy Rubin. The hope is that their testimony and the evidence they provide would prove once and for all that the mobile operating system was developed independently of iOS and put to bed the back and forth over patent battles.
While Mountain View has successfully stayed above the fray for the most part, it makes sense for Seoul to drag the company into this particular battle. Apple is seeking up to $40 per device sold in royalties -- far more than it ever has before. As part of its counter offensive Samsung is countersuing, claiming that Cupertino stole two of its technologies for use in the iPhone and iPad. Like other cases in the war, this will probably take some time to settle. And jury selection starts this week.

Apple’s reputation as offering the most stable operating system around may not be accurate.
TechRadar reports that data from Crittercism says that the average app crash rate on iOS 7.1 is 1.6 per cent. In comparison, the rate on Android versions 4.0 and upwards is just 0.7 per cent.
That’s according to numbers compiled from monitoring usage of over a billion apps.
This of course means that for every crash on Android iOS users will experience more than two.

Creighton University professor William Duckworth has released a report finding that kill-switch technology that remotely makes a stolen smartphone useless could save American consumers up to $2.6 billion per year — mostly from reduced insurance premiums. Duckworth estimated that Americans currently spend around $580 million replacing stolen phones each year and $4.8 billion paying for handset insurance. If a kill-switch led to a sharp reduction in theft of phones, most of the $580 million spent on replacing stolen phones would be saved. And a further $2 billion in savings could be realized by switching to cheaper insurance plans that don't cover theft."

A new report suggests that Apple's next flagship smartphone will be released in September.
According to Japanese publication Nikkei Asian Review, display panel contractors of Apple are now ramping up production to meet the iPhone 6’s target of a September launch, which would be in keeping with launch of the iPhone 5 (September 2012) and the iPhone 5S (September 2013).
The report claims that the new device will likely be offered in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.
Manufacturers have allegedly begun making fingerprint sensors and chips for liquid-crystal drivers.
Previous rumours suggest that the iPhone 6 will only come in a 4.7-inch version, and a 5.6-inch smartphone will be unveiled alongside it, but will not carry the brand name.
Other spec rumours include a 10MP camera, 1600x900 resolution display, and humidity, pressure and temperature sensors.
