Sony intends to spread the PlayStation Suite much further than Android phones - even iOS and Windows are part of the plan, and they're made by the enemy.
The exciting potential is for PlayStation Suite games to be offered far and wide, rather than be restricted like produce for App Store and Windows Phone 7.
"There are a variety of operating systems, but we're focusing first on Android," said Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai, in a conference translated by Andriasang.
"There's also Windows, iOS and so forth, but we don't have the resources to make it compatible with everything from the start.
"We're not ruling out PSS even on products like Sony Internet TV Powered by Google (Google TV) if adoption rate increases, or if it will help push adoption greatly."
"We have a completely open stance with carriers and handset makers," he added.
To begin with, PlayStation Suite will deliver classic PSone games to Android phone users. But in the future, Sony wants the Suite to evolve into a hardware-neutral development environment where brand new games and content are made.
Through a PlayStation Certified seal of approval, Sony will pin-point which devices work properly with PlayStation Suite. And with a QA system, Sony hopes to avoid the Suite becoming a swamp of questionable quality.
Final Fantasy VII on Android would tempt.
The announcement of PlayStation Suite came at Sony's PlayStation Meeting last week. The big news there was the unveiling of Next Generation Portable (aka PSP2). Eurogamer's blanket coverage of the event has been cobbled together in one handy place.

The highly delayed and much coveted white version of the iPhone 4 should arrive in the not too distant future, according to Pocket Gamer.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has also given the first explanation for the delay – apparently the white paint was allowing too much light to leak into the camera, resulting in washed out pictures. Wozniak even admitted to buying OEM Chinese case parts online and trying the white case himself to test the results.
Retail listings suggest the white SKU could arrive at the end of the month.
The last we heard Apple had stated that the white version of the iPhone 4 would be launched some time in 2011. Prior to that the device had expected to ship alongside the debut of the black machine last June, and then at some point later in 2010.

Figures by analyst Localytics have suggested that some 26 per cent of mobile apps are used only once following their download.
The survey, covering iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7, found that the number of one-use apps had fluctuated between 22 and 28 per cent over the last year.
While this does mean a good 70 per cent of apps are used repeatedly, if accurate Localytics' figures present a new context for another recent survey which found that the average iOS device owner had downloaded some 60 apps.

Symbian is no longer the most-shipped mobile platform, with Android finally knocking Nokia's OS out of the number one position. Manufacturers shipped 32.9 million Android devices in Q4 of last year, compared to 31 million Symbian devices, according to Canalys. That gives Google a 33% share of the global mobile market, over 31% for Nokia's Symbian. 'It's gone from nowhere to number one in the space of two years, which is pretty impressive,' Canalys analyst Pete Cunningham said, predicting Android would double its growth rate this year

Google's last Android-centric event, Google I/O in the middle of last year, treated us to a pair of delectable demos that may now finally be turning into mobile realities. One was a web client for the Android Market with OTA installations -- you just browse to an app you want to install while on your desktop and choose to push it to your Android device -- and the other was a cloud-based music backup and streaming service. The latter has since picked up the moniker of Google Music in subsequent rumors, and today both are receiving some speculative support for a launch at tomorrow's Honeycomb event. Android and Me has an insider source claiming the web-based Android Market is finally ready to roll out, whereas BusinessWeek reports Andy Rubin is heading up Google's digital music team and also has software ready for release, potentially at some point this month. Given the importance of both new additions, it's highly logical for Google to at least announce and show them off once more tomorrow. Then we can get back to waiting for the next Android update.

News via http://0xff.akop.org/2011/01/31/new-...notifications/
This version brings something that’s been very frequently requested: background updates; specifically for friends and messaging; with notifications now optional. To keep things reasonable, games aren’t updated in the background (unless you have a widget on your home screen – in which case, they are).
Full list of changes:
» Smoother scrolling and faster loading for the Friend list
» Favorite friends – “star” any friend in the friend list to mark them as “favorite”
» Background updates! Spark can now perform friend and message updates in the background, with optional notifications for new messages and friends (any or favorite) coming online
» Bug fixes
» Minor visual changes
Download from Android Market
I should also mention that I realize that not everyone was happy with the new color scheme for the app. A not-so-distant future release will bring back the traditional green Xbox theme. Thanks to all of you who expressed your concern.
UPDATE: 3.02 provides a fix for the friends list not loading on new installations. Sorry for the inconvenience.

After the desktop stalwarts of Windows 7 and Mac OS, the world's third most popular platform for web browsing turns out to be Apple's iOS. The software that makes iPhones, iPod touches and iPads tick has been identified by Net Applications as responsible for over two percent of the global traffic data analyzed in the web statistician's latest report -- the first time iOS has crossed that threshold. The UK and Australia had more than five percent each, while the USA clocked in at 3.4 percent. Leaving operating systems aside, Chrome has continued its steady growth on the browser front and now stands at a 10.7 percent share, more than doubling its slice from this time last year. Internet Explorer overall has dipped to its lowest level yet, at 56 percent, however Net Applications indicates IE8 is showing nice growth. So at least it's looking like we're finally ready to bury the zombies known as IE6 and IE7, whatever other browser we choose to migrate to.

Do you believe what you're seeing? 9to5Mac along with iFixYouri repair say they've got the new iPad 2 display. Better yet, they've got the purported part number: LP097X02-SLN1, compared to the original iPad's LP097X02-SLA3 display. It's said to be lighter and more than 1-mm thinner than the original while featuring a thinner bezel as well -- right, just as the rumors and our own sources have said. Such a display would also enable some tapering of the edges in line with those milled aluminum dummies we've seen. The big mystery is still the resolution. A 9to5Mac commenter claims to have deciphered the part number to reveal its LG Phillips 9.7-inch XGA 1024 x 768 H-IPS display origins (same resolution as the current iPad, if true). Unfortunately, we have no way to confirm this. One more pic of the part number details after the break.

We've gotten a bunch of tips in the past hour or so that the Android Market is doing weird things, and we can corroborate this on our Nexus S here -- we're just not able to download stuff. Apps look like they're starting to download, then they suddenly vanish into thin air without a trace and without an error message. Our Droid 2 is still fully functional, though, so this definitely isn't consistent; really, we're just wondering if this outage might have something to do with tomorrow's Android-themed festivities at the Google campus, which -- naturally -- we'll be attending. So how is everyone faring out there tonight?

An anonymous reader writes"In a 'pray I don't alter it again' moment for eBook sellers on apple iPad and iPhone devices, Apple is now requiring third-party eBook sellers like Amazon to also make their titles available through the Apple store, wherein the empire will take an additional 30% cut. 'Apple confirmed Tuesday that it would require app developers that sell e-books outside of their iPad and iPhone apps — through a Web site, for example — to also sell the books inside those apps. And purchases that originate in the app must be made through Apple, which keeps a 30 percent cut.'"http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...ng-For-Sellers

Diving through the Motorola Xoom's sweet, sweet blend of Android 3.0, we found an interesting perk -- there's an "Encrypt Tablet" option buried in the settings page, intended to secure all your personal data with a password or PIN. While a handy Google rep couldn't tell us which cryptographic standards the OS uses, he did tell us the feature is part of Honeycomb as a whole, not a Motorola exclusive, so we're sure to see the option in other business-minded Android slates to come. Oh, and Google asks that all you sysadmins stay tuned, as the company's whipped up an API that lets you enforce policy restrictions upon your peons as far as encryption is concerned. Just make sure they remember to keep the tablet charged. See a close-up after the break.

Unless you've been away from the Internet over the last few days, you would've no doubt heard about Woz's special appearance at the Engadget Show on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, a few websites ran with some quotes that they pulled from our interview -- specifically, the highlight was Woz "confirming" that thewhite iPhone 4 was indeed delayed due to camera issues. Well, I don't think this is the case at all. In fact, I'm sure there are plenty of other good reasons for why Apple's been delaying the much anticipated flavor of its flagship smartphone, but the camera just isn't one of them. Head right past the break and all will be explained.
Update: Our man Woz has just responded in the comments:
I said plenty to make it clear that I know nothing of Apple's reasons for rejecting anything ever. I told how when I got my white iPhone 4 assembled I tested the flash photos and they did indeed have problems. I spoke of testing flash photos versus non-flash ones and comparing flash photos between my white and black iPhones. I don't recall saying that it was a 'reason' Apple rejected the parts although I had read that.
For the last part, we were referring to 0:55 in the interview video after the break, but now that Woz has spoken, it could've been a joke at the time that got misinterpreted by some websites. They tend to do that with Woz. Read on!

Google's Android Market now has a web client. Finally! And guess what else, it's already live. Hit the source link below to get exploring. It's very simple, really, you can browse the entire Market catalog on your desktop or however else you're accessing the web, you can purchase anything that takes your fancy, and then -- via the magic of over-the-air transfers -- it downloads and installs onto your Android handset. A neat My Market Account section will let you nickname your registered devices to make them more recognizable as well.
Google has also just announced that Android will soon support in-app purchases. Widespread developer interest has been cited as the major reason for doing it, so you've got those lovable coders to thank for the oncoming wave of micropayments you'll have to deal with in your Android apps. The in-app purchasing SDK is releasing to devs today and will be "live to users prior to the end of this quarter."
Update: Invalid request. Yep, that's the message we keep getting when we try and download an app. Google promises that it should be working soon...
Update 2: And now it appears to be working!

Capcom’s popular Devil May Cry series has made its debut on the App Store.
Devil May Cry 4: Refrain is available to download now, and is compatible with all of Apple’s mobile devices: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
Unlike the upcoming reboot DmC – currently in development at Ninja Theory – Refrain holds true to the classic Devil May Cry formula. Players control DMC4 protagonist Nero as take on hordes of demoms and epic boss fights with his Devil Bringer arm.
Controls have been simplified to suit the game’s touch screen nature, but Capcom assures fans that the series’ signature combos and red orb upgrading system are still in place. Refrain also offers Game Center functionality, including achievements.

Peers are now free to use iPads, smartphones and other internet-enabled devices while in session for a trial period of one year.
A Lords committee described the current restrictions as "incomplete, outdated and contradictory".
"Members taking part in proceedings should be able to use electronic devices to access Parliamentary papers and other documents which are clearly and closely relevant to the business before the House," the report proposes.
That means Lords will not be able to Google during debate, amid fears search engine use would disrupt debate
Lord Toby Harris, a Labour peer who sits on the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee, criticised the ban.
"I am not sure exactly how this is meant to work or even why it is a distinction worth making. Perhaps I am missing something," he said.
Limiting the use of tablets is probably a wise move. Earlier this week Italian MP Simeone di Cagno Abbrescia was caught using his iPad to browse prostitutes, rather than devoting his attention to an important vote of no confidence.
For the time being, the house of commons is still not allowed to use connected devices.

It's finally here, folks. The Chronic Dev Team has put out the latest version of greenpois0n that allows you to free your iDevice running 4.2.1. What's different about this jailbreak? Glad you asked. This time 'round, the program will let you perform an untethered jailbreak -- you can finally reboot the device without having to re-jailbreak. Be warned though -- this build was rushed out and we haven't tested any devices on our end. At the time of this writing, the software is only available for Mac. Oh, and unlockers, don't update to 4.2.1 if you plan on swapping sim cards in the future. Hit the source link to get started.

We've all heard the rumors at this point about cameras on the front and back of the next generation iPad, and we've even heard about Apple dabbling in NFC (Near Field Communications) for future iPhones and possibly the iPad 2, but now iLounge is reporting on a new set of rumors for the iPad 2.
The report states that Apple is readily developing chips that will interface with NFC capabilities built in to future iDevices, probably the iPad 2. There would be no need for any other type of connection, like bluetooth, with the development of these chips. It also seems Apple may be moving away from the current aluminum body seen on the current iPad, and may opt for a carbon fiber add-on. However, the source indicates that they are not sure carbon fiber will make it on to the final design.
Finally, the source also states that Apple is still... [Read More]

Put it in the "maybe someday, maybe never" file. A patent originally filed for by Apple in 2008 shows the company's work on a unique stylus for touchscreen devices. Although Steve Jobs has been famously dismissive of styluses, this one is pretty different: equipped with a pivoting disk on the tip, pressure sensors, and even an accelerometer, it could enable new applications in digital art and gaming.
Steve Jobs has shown down through the years that he's not afraid of totally contradicting his previous statements. Back in 2004, he said Apple would never build a handheld video player, just a year before the fifth generation iPod was released... [Read More]

It's been a painful two days, hasn't it? If you're a Windows user looking for an untethered jailbreak for your iDevice, the answer is most certainly "yes." The Chronic Dev Team has just let loose thegreenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, but unlike the build released 48 hours ago, this one's meant for Wintel boxes. The team's site seems to be down at the moment (shocker!), but there's a download mirror linked below if you just can't wait to get going. As always, we'd caution you to back up your iPad, iPod touch or iPhone before doing the deed, and since it's the first of its kind (for this version of iOS, anyway), we'd be ready to see a few bugs along the way. Minor details, we know.

In yet another clear example of the many ways in which Apple's iPad is changing the status quo in multiple facets of life, it may soon become a reality in the state of Georgia where textbooks are a thing of the past. If Georgia state legislator Tommie Williams has his way, every middle school classroom will boast one iPad per student, each loaded with the study materials and course work pertinent to their individual classes.
"Last week we met with Apple Computers," Williams told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "and they have a really promising program – for $500 per child per year, they will furnish every child with an iPad, wi-fi the system, provide all the books on the system, all the upgrades, all the teacher training – and the results they’re getting from these kids is phenomenal." The real value in making the switch from school books to iPads, however, comes over the long haul. "We’re currently spending about $40 million a year on... [Read More]

When you look at the Apple iPad's sales figures, it's not hard to see why every technology company on the planet is jumping on the tablet bandwagon, a lot of which are Android tablets. Unfortunately though, some of these Android tablets were born way too early. They are haunted with a series of problems including flimsy hardware, low-quality resistive touch screens, serious display resolution issues, and old Android versions with limited or non-existent access to apps. Even the Samsung Galaxy Tab came well before its time. Even though it's fast, well-designed, and comes with a decent Android implementation, its functionality is limited to that of an Android smartphone. So here's to hoping that Honeycomb's functionality make up for the lost ground.http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...-Born-Too-Soon

Amid the din of claims and counter-claims about the second-generation iPad, one prediction is pretty much a sure thing: it will do FaceTime. One clever modder has come up with a kludge to allow that on current iPads, though without a front-facing camera it'll only let you see, not be seen. It's an interesting bit of work, though it requires Apple frameworks and so couldn't be made into a Cydia app without violating copyright, which would be a dumb thing to do.
Someone going by the name of Intell posted a how-to over at the MacRumors forums on the process, which involves extracting some frameworks and the MobilePhone app from the iPodtouch version of iOS 4.2.1 (there have been problems reported with the iPhone 4 version) and logging in via SSH to make some modifications. What you end up with is a MobilePhone.app that appears as FaceTime.app and lets you see... [Read More]

Wi-fi required for playback, 3G connection presumed inadequate for streaming
The long-awaited iPlayer app is due for UK launch on iPad this Thursday, according to theTwitter account of a Beeb online engineer.
Owner of the account, Geoff Marshall said: “3G connection is browse only. Browse and playback requires Wi-fi.” Mobile playback might be possible on the upcoming iPad 2, if the tablet uses 4G tech.
It is unclear whether the app will allow users to download content for playback later, like the current desktop program does.
Subsequent Tweets revealed a US launch is planned for June, where the BBC will charge a subscription.
No word when iPlayer will reach the iPhone or iPod touch. Last month reports indicatedwe’d see the apps released together.
It is also rumoured that the BBC will take the on-demand service to Freeview, Freesat and Xbox 360 this year. Until now, iPlayer had only been available on the Nintendo Wii.

The iControlPad hasn't been flirting with vaporware status for quite as long as Duke Nukem Forever but certainly long enough to make us wonder if we'd ever be able to use it to kick some in-game butt before we ran out of bubblegum. We've been tantalized by this formerly iPhone-exclusive adapter since way back in 2008, when it was going to be a simple case with a dock connector that would let you control those emulators with greater ease. It's grown significantly since then, the latest version shown above -- the final version, as it happens. It's now available for order at a cost of $74.99, and we're happy to say that ditching that dock connector and going for Bluetooth has expanded support well past the iDevice crowd, including things like the Motorola Blackflip, Blackberry Touch, and the now-classic G1. However, we're told not all games and emulators will work with the thing, so your mileage may vary. First devices ship next week, so make with the clicking.

Nintendo may not be making a smartphone, but if it did, it might look a bit like the Kyocera Echo. Coming to Sprint later this year, it's being touted as the world's first "dual-touchscreen smartphone." At a preview event today, we got to see the phone running The Sims 3, optimized to take advantage of both screens. Unsurprisingly, it looked a lot like the DS version, albeit with higher-resolution graphics. The phone is set to launch with one other game, although a Sprint representative wouldn't reveal what it was.
Running on a custom Kyocera-skinned version of Android 2.2, the Echo augments the growing "fragmentation" problem that Google's mobile OS faces. Games must use Sprint's SDK to take advantage of both of the screens offered by the Echo. But, how many developers will flock to create games for a single device available on a single carrier? We're going to guess: not many. At least the phone will be able to play other Android games -- maybe even PlayStation Suite games, if the specs are up to snuff.

- Notifications for friends signing in (for all friends, or only favorite friends)
- Bug fixes
Unfortunately, PSN doesn’t support realtime status updates in the same fashion as Xbox Live, so friend notifications may be delayed by 10 minutes, or so.

Earlier this month, we discuss the possibility of iPod Classics getting new hard drives that almost double or triple the original capacity they have once been limited to. AppleBitch reports that the iPod classic supplies are drying up at Target, Amazon (2), Best Buy and even Apple is giving a 1-3 days before shipping. Even with no real big firmware updates in some time, the Classic does remain to sell decent.
Now the question is, with these dwindling supplies, does this show signs of potentially being discontinued, or will these new hard drives prove to be a worthy update for the product line? Currently the supply shortage only seems to be affecting the silver colored model.
The iPod classic has not been in over a year. What do you think?

Capcom has kicked off its own insane iPhone/iPad games sale, slashing the price of 10 games down to a measly $.99 (US).

Top of the list is Street Fighter IV, which is not only surprisingly good on the small-screen device, but also usually $10. For $.99 it's almost like stealing.
But there are plenty of other excellent titles on the list, including Phoenix Wright, Mega Man II and Resident Evil 4. The full list is below (courtesy of Kotaku):
*Street Fighter 4
* CAPCOM Arcade (in-app purchase game machines)
* Dead Rising Mobile
* Devil May Cry 4 refrain
* Phoenix Wright
* Resident Evil 4
* Resident Evil 4 iPad edition
* KENKEN Pro
* Mega Man II
* Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2011

Indie puzzle game World of Goo amassed 125,000 sales on iPad during its first month of release, developer 2D Boy has revealed.
The reworking of the two year old game for Apple's tablet has already outperformed its Wii and PC versions.
Claimed 2D Boy (aka Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler) last night, "in comparison to the iPad version, World of Goo's best 31 day period on WiiWare was 68k copies (thanks to a mass mailing by Nintendo), and on Steam it was 97k copies (thanks to two promotions at discounted prices).
"What makes this even more amazing is that this is a two year old game released on a platform that is less than a year old. The iPad doesn't have the benefit of an install base built up over several years."
Having enjoyed buoyant sales (and a leap from #21 to #2 in the iPad App store chart) when halving the game's price to $5, 2D Boy was resistant to claims by other game companies (including Nintendo) that declining App Store prices was bad news for revenues.
"If a game earns 50% more revenue at a lower price point, it's a pure win situation as the developer makes more money and more people get to enjoy the game. And if those two things are true, does it really matter what the sale price is?"
However, lowering the price late in the day does not seem to have prevented long-term decline, the developer claims, and feels that "if we end up releasing an iPhone version we would need to sell it at a very low price point if we want it to be a top seller in the long run."
World of Goo's success may also have stemmed from an oversight by Apple that saw games promoted in iTunes during the week of December 16 stay prominent for twice as long, due to a Christmas content freeze. Getting featured in the first place was key.
"The only thing we could think of to increase the chances of getting featured was to build awareness of the upcoming release within Apple. We emailed the one person we knew there and were fortunate that the news was received with excitement. We sent them a pre-release build, got some great feedback, and continued to work closely and seek advice up until release."
While Gabler and Carmel agreed that App Store success remained a "lottery," they did "wonder whether, in the long run, it even matters who wins the PSN / WiiWare / XBLA race."

Another games platform, now apple wants to take over home consoles too :P
news via modmyi
While commonly thought of as little more than a "hobby" to Apple, the living room is becoming an increasingly important target for Cupertino's product development aims. Given the explosion in popularity of the Apple TV and rampant speculation about Apple entering the connect-flatscreen TV business, it seems as though Apple is gearing up for an even bigger push into the living room than anyone had previously thought possible.
According to the folks at Engadget, who were on the receiving end of an anonymous provider of iOS 4.3 beta 3 code snippets, Apple may be planning to launch an Apple TV gaming platform in the near future. In particular, two strings of code, "com.apple.appletv.play.live.thunder" and "com.apple.appletv.play.archive.thunder" suggest that Cupertino is getting serious about gaming. As a result, if video game support comes to the Apple TV, it could prove a game changer for the video gaming industry as we presently know it.

German researchers have come froward with a public warning: If someone steals your iPhone and jailbreaks it, they may be able to retrieve your sensitive passwords. As a result, the "Fraunhofer Institute Secure Information Technology" team has released a new video showcasing the perceived "security threats" posed by jailbreaking, a situation in which an "attacker can retrieve passwords in 6 minutes."
The video demonstrates a password-locked iPhone tethered to a computer via USB. Following a snappy jailbreak, the hoodlum taps into the device's filesystem and nefariously copies a keychain access script. When executed, the script enables all the passwords stored on the iPhone to be viewed after extraction. This "flawed security design" - which affects all iPhone and iPad devices containing the latest firmware - makes all of the above possible without the need... [Read More]

Talk about the iPad 2 (like the iPad 2 itself) is so boring that people are now starting to speculate about the iPad 3. Those rumors got a big shot in the arm yesterday as two prominent pundits - John Gruber of Daring Fireball and MG Siegler of TechCrunch - predicted that Apple will release a third-generation iPad in the fall. While Gruber made it clear that his guess was pure speculation, Siegler quotes a "very good" anonymous source as saying that Apple is planning a "big fall surprise" relating to the iPad 3, and asserts that this is "not a guess."
John Gruber, who has a wealth of insider contacts at Apple, wrote that he wasn't relying on any of those sources when he predicted that Apple would switch to a late-fall... [Read More]

Konami has launched PES 2011 for Android phone users.
It's available to download now from the Android Market for Ł4.23.
It utilises a control system called True Flow, which streamlines the beautiful game so simple phone controls or touch-screen joypads can be used.
In a press release today Konami boasted that PES 2011 for Android is the only game to feature all UEFA Club Competitions, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup Final awaiting the winners of both.

The dedicated hardcore gamer is under-served in the mobile market, as developers assume handsets are purely for casual gaming experiences, according to EA.
Setting out to bust a number of myths about mobile gaming, Travis Boatman, vice president of Worldwide Studios at Electronic Arts also told the DICE Summit today that although handsets are an item users carry at all times, almost 50 per cent of players experience games when at home, not on the move.
"Dead Space 2 targeted the core gamer and that surprised a lot of people," he said of the recent hit release. "And if you're targeting the at home player you can have a bigger file size."
The myth that mobile players are experiencing games "on the run" is wrong, said Boatman. 47 per cent play when at home, 14 per cent at work and only 12 per cent whilst commuting.
The idea that mobile is only for casual gamers is wrong said Boatman. "There's a hungry market looking for different games experiences. It's not just casual, core gamers are under-served in mobile market."
He also said that porting content between devices was important, and developers shouldn't just focus on one system such as Apple's iOS.
Using the Kindle as an example, Boatman said his company's Scrabble game for the system was a massive success, outselling all books and other content for the device.
"It has a great digital distribution method. Most [developers] think they can't push the technology, but the experience on a Kindle is awesome.
" It's a unique and fascinating experience to sit in direct sunlight and play Scrabble. When we put the game out it outsold everything. Everyone wants to play games. Is it important to port games to other devices? Yes."
The final myth - that current technology is offering the best games experience on mobile, is also wrong, said Boatman.
"Is this is as good as it gets? I don't think it ends here. We're in a place where there's a lot more room to go. I don't think the industry stops here. The young developers of today grew up with this stuff. Think about how they are attacking the space."
"We're on the cusp of something great. In three years you won't be able to recognise the state of the mobile games industry," he concluded.

In some ways i actually agree with this, theres nothing better than to have a good long shi*e, and many a time ive played football manager whilst getting on with buisness, heres the article from eurogamer :P
Here's something to bear in mind next time you ask a mate if you can borrow their grubby, smeary iPhone to make a quick call. Seven per cent of all mobile gaming time is enjoyed while the user is perched on the porcelain throne, so says a top EA exec.
During an address at the annual DICE gaming summit in Las Vegas, as reported by VentureBeat, EA Mobile VP Travis Boatman outlined five of the biggest mobile gaming myths. First on his list was the perception that people only play while on the move.
According to unattributed research, 47 per cent of the time people are playing at home, 12 per cent of the time it's during a commute, 14 per cent while at work, seven per cent while in the restroom, three per cent during school hours and one per cent at the airport. 'Miscellaneous' made up the rest of the pie chart.
Boatman's other four myths, should you be interested, were as follows:- Myth: The top mobile games are all casual: He insisted that 'core' gamers were under-served on mobile platforms but Epic's Infinity Blade and EA's Dead Space, both of which topped the App Store charts, were proof of high demand for more substantial software.
- Myth: One size game fits all platforms: Not so. The splintering of the Android market means developers have to make multiple versions of their games.
- Myth: Brands don't matter: Oh yes they do, Boatman insisted, citing the fact that eight of the top 25 iPhone games were brands.
- Myth: This is as good as it gets: According to Boatman, the mobile game industry will have come on in leaps and bounds in three years time.

The smart money was right. Nokia has jumped into bed with Microsoft and will produce phones running Windows Phone 7. The cynics would say that, here, we have two lumbering dinosaurs of the technology world clinging to each other hoping that the other gives them a future. Optimists would point to two companies that need each other, both bringing vital components to the alliance. The big winner is Microsoft. Windows Phone 7, while reasonably well received by commentators, has not set the world on fire. An alliance with Nokia gives it access to the world's largest phone maker and its huge mindshare — in many developing nations a mobile phone is known as a Nokia. The biggest loser is MeeGo, the ugly, unloved step-child of operating systems."Nokia wrote to developers, "Qt will continue to be the development framework for Symbian and Nokia will use Symbian for further devices; continuing to develop strategic applications in Qt for Symbian platform and encouraging application developers to do the same.

You know what they say about payback. Apparently, Sony's feelings are still hurt about Apple rejecting the Sony e-reader application from the App Store because it would have effectively bypassed Apple's system for buying content. As a result of Apple "cracking down" and "tightening control" even further than usual, Sony may now be gearing up to reject Apple - at least in terms of the music it currently makes available through iTunes.
Quote:
SONY has signaled it may withdraw its artists from Apple's iTunes store and withhold its games from the iPhone in a sign the two companies are on the brink of all-out war.

Apple is said to be working on a new smaller, less expensive version of the iPhone, according to a new report from Bloomberg today. This new model would be in the $200 range and be about a third smaller than the current iPhone4. With a lower price point, cellular providers could then give customers the choice of either paying for the phone at full price without a contract or give the phone away for free with a two-year contract.
Currently, Apple has 16 percent of the global mobile market share, while rival Google’s market share has more than tripled to 32.9 percent in the fourth quarter. With a new low-cost iPhone, Apple hopes to increase its overall market share worldwide and surpass Google in the process.
Apple is said to be developing an iPhone that can access multiple wireless networks. This dual-mode iPhone would be compatible with... [Read More]

News via http://www.dingux.com/2011/02/update...-for-a330.html
It's been way too long since the last entry. First I delayed it a bit just to have something actually substantial to write, and then then stretched it a bit longer, and well, here we are.
After coming back from China I had a list of tasks I had agreed with the ChinaChip management and engineers to get dingux up and running on the A330 in the near term. There was also the possibility of they sponsoring the development. To make a long story short, I was willing to anything between working on my spare time for free and being hired full time, and I was expecting something in between: I'm way too expensive for full time dedication (plus it's probably too soon for that) and while I'd be happy to work in my spare time, that would of course come with no commitment to any schedule or even to completion.
Since then, there's been some kind of priority rearrangement in ChinaChip and the "dingux on the A330" project as been put on hold. That means that the engineers that would do their part (mostly adapting their firmware to allow comfortable dingux installation in the internal flash) aren't available at the moment to work on it. And delivery of the required information to get a kernel port to the CC1800 running has been... well... slow. I got the most important part a couple of weeks ago. And no sponsoring. So I'll do my best but again, don't hold your breath, since as of now my job and my family allow only for a very limited amount of spare time.
The partial CC1800 programmer's manual I've got is 38 pages long. And consists of a couple of paragraphs describing each peripheral and tables of registers. Only the names of the registers and the bit fields. All in Chinese. The Texas Instruments OMAP3503 programmer's manual is +3000 pages. Go figure.
Not that I'm really complaining, since I truly believe that's what they have from the people that actually designed the CC1800. The cheese is in the BSP, which is code, which means if something is not properly done or downright broken you can't fix it, since you don't have a reference programmer's manual.
I wanted to end this post with some tech details about the A330 boot process and memory map, but I have to leave now, so it'll go in the next post.

Opera's been working its Norwegian charms on the iPhone since last Spring, and it's been flirting with tablets since CES, but up until now the browsers yet to put the moves on the iPad. Considering how much it gets around, we're surprised it didn't happen sooner, but Opera announced yesterday that it would show off a new version of Opera Mini on a number of platforms at MWC this year, including Android, iPhone, J2ME, BlackBerry, Symbian, and yes -- the iPad. There's no word on what the iPad version will bring -- or when, for that matter -- but we're guessing it will probably sport the same smooth zoom and multiple-page grid we saw previewed on Opera for tablets. For more on the world's most promiscuous browser, check out the full PR after the jump.

Palm's always been pretty cozy with the homebrew community, and now, with a donation to WebOS Internals, HP's showing that they've got love for hackers, too. Just in time for the lover's holiday, HP announced plans to donate a ProLiant DL385 server to the independent developer's resource -- a gift worth $10,000 and packing 32GB of RAM and 8TB disk space. Considering all the new devices we saw at the webOS event this week, the added capacity comes at just the right time. We always thought diamonds were a nice gesture, but we suppose, in this case anyway, nothing says I love you like an HP ProLiant.

Microsoft had a sit down with the first people to jailbreak their Windows Phone 7. Seems like good progress was made. This seems like a good approach to me. It would be great if Sony, Apple, Microsoft, and several Android phone makers would implement a simple development switch in their phones — these would obviously void the warranty, but it would give hackers the opportunity to actually own their devices without fear of having to jailbreak all over again whenever an update arriveshttp://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/02...7-Jailbreakers

Installing nitoTV on your Apple TV used to involve a mildly difficult SSH process, and for those folks who are turned off by running Terminal and punching in lines of code, the newest version of greenpois0n(RC6) might pique your jailbreak interests. It'll perform an untethered jailbreak (meaning, you can reboot your iProduct without the need to re-JB), freeing your device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) running 4.2.1 and allow you to fulfill all of your out-of-jail needs. Bundled in this new release is a loader that'll inject nitoTV right onto your little black Apple box. This new greenpois0n is said to fix emulation problems (zodttd's emulators were having issues) and can be applied right over your device that's been freed with RC5. But proceed with caution -- we're seeing a bunch of jailbreakers on Twitter claiming have ran into issues (WiFi, booting) with RC6. Hit the source link to grab either the Mac or Windows version.

The Korea Herald is reporting that Samsung is in talks with Apple to supply Super-PLS displays for the iPad. Samsung's patented technology, which it previewed last November, allows brighter screens at lower cost. However, mass production has not yet begun on S-PLS screens, raising questions about whether these displays would be for the iPad 2 or a future model.
Samsung's Mobile Display division says that their Super-PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) technology offers a number of improvements to the IPS (In-Plane Switching) displays used on the current iPad. For instance, they claim that S-PLS offers 100% better viewing angles with S-PLS over today’s IPS technology. Given that the iPad has a viewing angle of 178 degrees, it's hard to know what that could mean, but presumably it refers to improved graphics quality at lower angles. Additionally, they claim S-PLS will be 10%... [Read More]

Even before Apple debuts its second-generation iPad this year, some are predicting tablet sales to be so heavily dominated by the Cupertino iDevice maker that competitors will have an almost impossible challenge trying to catch up. On Friday, Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes said Apple's tablet is "running far ahead of its tablet competition and its their game to lose," noting that Apple will likely sell a record number of iPads in 2011.
According to coverage provided by Barron's, Apple is effectively running away with the ball in this game, despite having not even set up an enterprise salesforce yet. But Apple is “listening to enterprise customers.” As a result, Reitzes concluded in his conference call with a research analyst at Forrester Research that Apple is the clear “winner in the consumerization of IT,” adding that Forrester’s work "supports the view more and more corporate users are buying devices and bringing them into work.”
Reitzes, who maintains... [Read More]

The Wall Street Journal has weighed in on rumors of Apple's smaller iPhone, and citing "people familiar with the matter" the publication says that the rumors are likely true. One such familiar person reportedly saw a device half the size of the iPhone 4, bearing the codename "N97," and said that the handset will be only about half the size of the original, and at only around half the price too. Amazingly, those anonymous sources continued to divulge information, expressing the idea that Apple could finally make its MobileMe cloud service suite free, and that it just might be the platform from which Apple could finally launch a streaming music platform and lessen the need for all those gigabytes of flash storage in your pocket. We'll let you know if or when any of that happens, okay?

Well, MWC is in full swing, where folks like LG, Samsung, Sony, and Nokia are pouring their souls out in front of us in device form. So, naturally, the rumors are swirling about... the iPhone nano. In a followup to the Wall Street Journal's big story, Cult of Mac is claiming some additional inside info from a source with a "great track record." The main idea is that the iPhone nano would rely on the cloud to such an extent that the device wouldn't really have any local storage to speak of, outside of a streaming buffer. This would of course go hand in hand with a MobileMe / Lala-powered streaming music service, and result in significant component cost savings (flash memory is still pretty spendy). While this sounds like a beautiful dream, it doesn't make much sense in 2011. Streaming all your music and other media over a capped 3G connection doesn't sound very consumer-friendly, and there are still plenty of situations where having a nice offline stash of music is a lifesaver. But there's a bigger problem: where do you put your apps without local storage? Android's historic shortage of app storage really bit it in the ass, and we doubt Apple wants to go down that route. Sure, we can see a 4GB or so ultracheap device, with a heavy reliance on streaming media (many people get most of their music from Pandora these days, anyways), but a memory-free iPhone just doesn't sound feasible at this point in time.

Apple has confirmed that it will be introducing a subscription package program for content-based apps such as magazines and video services, but will be taking 30 per cent of all subscription fees in return.
The move is presumably intended to encourage more bespoke content apps for the iPhone and iPad, mimicking The Daily, an iPad specific newspaper which launched earlier this year. Subscription fees will be paid via the same App Store account as any app purchase.
Different packages have been planned, according to length of commitment. Publishers will be entitled to offer subscriptions to the app externally, and keep 100 per cent of the revenue, but the same offer or better has to be available to purchase from the app itself too.
"Our philosophy is simple," said on-leave Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "When Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing"
"All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app. We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers."
It's not known at this time whether the offer could be extended to any future iPad specific MMO's or subscription based titles.

Adobe believes over 200 million smartphones and tablets will support AIR-based applications by the end of this year.
Runtime environment AIR allows, amongst other features, the operation of Flash-based apps and games on a broad range of mobile devices. Currently, Android is the primary platform for this.
It is the cornerstone of Adobe's cold war against Apple, with the latter famously refusing to support Flash on its iOS devices. However, it has recently relented – now at least allowing exported versions of apps that originated in Flash/AIR.
Adobe's senior vice president David Wadhwani told VentureBeat that over 20 million smartphones with Flash 10.1 were shipped last year, with the platform itself having been downloaded some 7 million times from the Android Market.
Of the 200 million device projection, Adobe believes 132 million will be smartphones, with tablets constituting a large portion of the leftover.
In addition, developers had created some 1500 AIR-based Apps during the first two months of its availability for Android.

Major developers have offered their thoughts on gaming's slow move towards digital distribution.
While it has been argued in many quarters that smaller, casual games for mobile and social networks are the industry's future, Gaikai boss David Perry claimed in an episode of GameTheory (published onGamesIndustry.biz today) that "I see a lot of little teams trying to make simple games, and I'm a little worried... that's not sustainable.
"People who making Kleenex games – ones that you can blow your nose on and throw away – that's not necessarily a safe place to be betting your money. If your game design is two pages, unless you've found the next Tetris, I would start to worry."
Conversely, Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin worried that medium-scale projects may be the most risky. "There are some traps in the industry now for developers – one is to grow into the size that makes middle games on console, bigger than $15 million, but smaller than $30 million.
"That middle gap seems to right now be a financial weak point, and a lot of games in that budget aren't big enough to compete with the Call of Dutys out there, but there's also not small enough to recoup with lower sales."
The general sentiment was that the industry has become much riskier in recent times – as evidenced by Activision's dramatic cull of multiple studios and franchises last week.
Claimed Epic president Mike Capps, "Chris Taylor and I have had successful independent game companies running for a decade or more. But neither of us would start one now – it's just so hard to get moving and really do something you're excited about. I don't know how to do it anymore.
"There's a reason FarmVille and Zynga's games are so successful – it's advertising dollars. Not because FarmVille's design is particularly brilliant or they put a massive investment into it – it's advertising dollars, followed by metrics, and watching what their users are doing. So we're all playing bigger gambles and that's getting scary – for a studio like Epic, I can't have a lot of failures at the $15 million level and continue."
Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne, meanwhile reasoned that "You're only as good as your last game... but now the stakes are even higher, and the failures are more visible." Remedy's last title, Alan Wake, was last year revealed to have sold less than 200,000 copies in its first month of release.
Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder co-creator Jon Hare, now working on mobile titles as Tower Studios, felt that the division between large and small companies was only growing. "Boxed product is only alive if you are EA or Ubisoft... everyone's been so marginalised from retail that there's nothing in it for us anymore.
"The other 90% of the industry has looked to online and now there's so many options that nobody wants to turn back."

In case you weren't aware, Apple's newly launched App Store subscriptions aren't sitting so well with everybody. While the functionality could of course be a boon to services that have struggled getting paying customers, folks who have already been doing just fine, thank you very much, are balking at the new restrictions Apple has imposed. Rhapsody has issued a statement, which says that it's not going to play ball and even levels a bit of a threat: "We will be collaborating with our market peers in determining an appropriate legal and business response to this latest development." The big trouble stems from the fact that Apple requires anybody offering a subscription service to offer that service for the same price or less through Apple. That means you can still sign up folks through your own methods and get all the cash, but if anybody signs up through your app, Apple gets a 30 percent cut. In addition, Apple is no longer allowing applications to include a link to an external site for purchasing, which means vendors will have trouble getting new users to pay them directly instead of using Apple's simple but heavily-taxed option. Rhapsody claims that it can't offer its services at existing prices with Apple grabbing that much of the revenue, and it sounds like Rhapsody will be leaving the App Store soon if an agreement isn't struck.
Of course, this is just the shiny surface of the dirt Apple's new policies have scuffed up, and we might even have an antitrust case on our hands, according to the Wall Street Journal. Check out the more coverage link for more on that, and follow after the break for Rhapsody's statement in full.

Building on its Airsync feature that lets users wirelessly keep their media (pictures, music, movies) library synced between computer and mobile device, DoubleTwist's new AirTwist feature lets your Android powered phone stream them to any Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Assuming you've already paid for the $4.99 AirSync add-on, all users need to do is get the most recent version of the app from the Android market, join the same network as one of the consoles wirelessly and authorize it within the app. While PS3 and Xbox 360 are the only devices officially listed, we didn't have any problem pulling in a few songs on a connected Google TV device since it's built on DLNA and should work with any device using the standard. Of course, Skifta does pretty much the same thing (with the exception of streaming to the Xbox 360) and it's free, so choose carefully.

Thus far we still know surprisingly little about the next generation iPhone (or iPhone 5 for lack of a better name) expected this summer in keeping with Apple's traditional launch cycle. We've heard that the completely redesigned handset will boast a next generation A5 processor and Qualcomm chipset that will unify the CDMA / GSM / UMTS radios. Others have heard that it'll also feature NFC integration along with the possibility of a "universal SIM." But what about the display? How will it size-up to the existing iPhone 4's rather puny 3.5-inch display and the smaller and lighter iPhone model that the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg say is in the works? Well, ifDigiTimes and its chatty "upstream component suppliers" are to be believed then the next generation iPhone will be sporting a 4-inch display. While DigiTimescan, at times, be a suspect source for Apple information, the idea of a larger 4-inch iPhone flagship to help differentiate itself from a smaller iPhone nano and legacy iPhone 4 (that becomes the budget model) does make some sense.

The iPhone Dev Team has released PwnageTool 4.2, which is now untethered thanks to the help of the Chronic Dev Team. With their permission, the Dev Team has included this exploit in PwnageTool 4.2.
What is the difference between PwnageTool and GreenPois0n? By using PwntageTool, unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW firmware and still retain the current baseband and unlock.
By the sounds of things, pod2g and the chronic team will probably add this same support that PwnageTool includes.
Supported Devices include: (Mac OS X Only)

PwnageTool also includes two very recent improvements to the 4.2.1 JB: iBooks was just fixed by @comex and @pushfix last night so that it works as intended on DRMed books, and the wifi problem on AppleTV 2G was fixed by @nitotv, @DHowett, and @saurik. Both of these fixes will also

A Taiwanese website that has a had a decent track record of verified iPhone leaks is claiming today that Apple is evaluating 3 different hardware prototypes of the iPhone 5, one of them including a slide-out keyboard. The Google translation of the report on tw.Apple.pro is pretty hard to understand, but seems to indicate that in addition to the slide-out model, there will also be an updated "traditional" iPhone with minor under-the-hood improvements compared to the iPhone4.
It's not clear from the googletrans what the phrase "sliding cover" refers to, but it may suggest a physical keyboard that slides out from the case. In addition to this model,... [Read More]

CEO Eric Schmidt reveals Nokia were close to Android agreement
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Schmidt said the search giant held "confidential negotiations with Nokia that were extensive” before the Finnish vendor opted for the Windows Phone 7 platform.
The soon-to-leave CEO left the door open for Nokia should they want to renege on the Microsoft deal.
"We would like them to adopt Android at some point in the future and that offer remains open. We think Android was a good choice for Nokia. We are sorry they made a different choice” he said.
That may well be a possibility, after an anonymous group of Nokia shareholders announced plans to dislodge Stephen Elop and rethink the use of the WP7 platform.
During his speech, Schmidt revealed that Android is gaining 300,000 new users each day. At that rate, its no surprise ad revenues of the mobile OS are forecast to surpass $1 billion dollars by 2012.

Google has launched a new payment system that allows users to subscribe to online content for a 10% commission fee.
The move comes after rival Apple was criticised over its payment system which takes 30% of the sale price.
One Pass will work on tablets and smartphones, as well as Google-related websites.
One Pass will launch initially in the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The announcement came just one day after Apple announced new rules for publishers selling subscriptions on its iOS platform.
Apple says companies must now offer users the option to buy directly through an iTunes account, handing 30% of the price to Apple.
Previously, vendors were allowed to simply direct customers to an external website, keeping all of the profits.
On a Google blog posting, Lee Shirani, the company's director of business product management wrote: "Publishers can customise how and when they charge for content while experimenting with different models to see what works best for them."

That's right, that little green blob in the upper left hand corner of that built-in touchscreen is indeed theAndroid logo, and that display does indeed belong to a tablet of unknown origin, currently riding around on the back of a headrest on a bus somewhere in India. We're not entirely sure who's funding this project or which bus line the tablets can be found on, but the login screen you see here does give us a little bit of insight: "As per government policy, we need to record details of the person using the Internet on this device." The service is apparently free and unlimited, and if this is a government program, it would be right in line with India's democratic outlook on technology. Sure, Indian college students are still awaiting the storied $35 tablets, but we suppose if they have enough scratch to ride the bus all day, these headrest slates could do in a pinch. For a look at what Android tablets look like on public transit, check out the video after the jump.

Cloning the core concepts of a game for an App Store title is one (profitable) thing, but stealing a game's name, assets and even code -- and reaping the profits -- is just a tadillegal. Ars Technica has such tales of woe from a couple companies. One example is a small dev called Halfbot that was planning to port its Flash-based game The Blocks Comethto the iPhone. Only, the two-man team soon found out it'd been beaten to the punch by someone who had essentially copied and pasted the game onto the App Store.
The Halfbot team scrambled to rectify the situation and got the app pulled, but only after the title was featured on the "new and noteworthy" section of the App Store, eventually breaking into the top 100 as a $0.99 app. Developer Derek Laufman told Ars, "If we don't make it into the top 100 games when our version is released then we'll know it definitely [affected] our game in a negative way."
The full Ars piece is a solid read to get an idea of how, in this world of small-scale development, with relatively hands-off platforms like the App Store and Android Marketplace, this could become a serious issue -- well, more serious than it already is.

Last Friday, on the heels of Sony's hurt feelings over Apple's rejection of the Sony e-reader application, speculation rose that Sony may withdraw the music it currently makes available through iTunes. Michael Ephraim, Chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, stated in an interview that all options were on the tablet with regard to the future of Sony music and possibly pulling it from iTunes.
Less than one week after Ephraim's controversial statements, Sony is officially sidestepping those comments and reiterating its cooperative aims with Apple. "Sony Music as I understand it has no intention of withdrawing from iTunes," said Sony Network Entertainment Chief Operating Officer Shawn Layden. According to Silicon Alley Insider, Layden considers Apple "one of our biggest partners in the digital domain." Regarding Ephraim's harsh words last week, Layden added, "I think those words were either taken out of context or the person who spoke them was unclear... [Read More]

It seems like Apple is may be hoping to implement OLED Displays in its future products, such as the iPhone and iPad. This comes according to a job listing sent privately to employees of companies that 'specialize in display technologies.' 9to5Mac notes that this report is similar to a private job listing posted in 2008, as Apple was working on the iPhone and early prototype iPads.
The listing states that these employees would be a "focal point" for developing advanced displays for future products. Apple adds in the listing that job candidates should have "hands-on experience" in the flat-panel industry. This seems to be the first job-listing for OLED displays for Apple, and it seems like this is what Apple needs to implement their next great line of products.
Below is a listing of what Apple is looking for in their job ad:

We've been hearing about various Android malware spreading through the chinese markets. Well here's another one to look out for, meet ADRD (aka Trojan:Android/Adrd.A) which is expert in sucking your bandwidth. The malware downloads a list of search URLs and then performs those searches at random in the background, which as the screen shots [in the linked article] show leads to excessive data charges. Similar to other Android malwares this too is distributed through wallpapers which are infected repackaged versions of legit wallpapers."Adds reader Trailrunner7:"Lookout, a mobile security vendor, said it has identified 14 instances of the malware repackaging itself in various wallpaper apps and specifically in the popular game, RoboDefense, made available in alternative application markets. The trojan works by duping an infected app into sending encrypted data containing the device’s IMEI and IMSI to a remote host. HongTouTou then receives a set of search engine target URIs and search keywords to send as queries. It then uses these keywords to emulate search processes, creating searches in the search engine yielding the top results for those keywords and clicking on specific results. To the search engine, the searches appear to be coming from a mobile user using a mobile web browser with User-Agent corresponding to the UCWeb browser.http://search.slashdot.org/story/11/...-Fake-Searches

Mobile gaming social network OpenFeint has introduced a raft of major cross-platform features to its service.
OpenFeint-enabled games available on Android, iOS and more can share leaderboards, user accounts, friends lists and more across multiple platforms.
Commented OpenFeint CEO Jason Citron: "We believe games should connect people, regardless of what device or mobile OS they own. With the release of OpenFeint Connect, we give game developers the flexibility they need to take their games and game data to players everywhere."
The new service is known as OpenFeint Connect, and is API- rather than client-based - which means it can in theory be adopted by games on other platforms with relative ease.
Already confirmed as being newly-supported are Windows Phone 7 and the Mac App Store.
More details on OpenFeint Connect are available here.

Android users can now stream mobile content, such as playlists, photos and videos, to their televisions – through PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
DoubleTwist has just upgraded its sync application to enable the functionality, according to a report from the Mobile World Congress event by Pocket-Lint.
"The last thing we added ... was the ability to beam directly content from your Android phone to your TV through an Xbox or PS3. It was kind of the last piece of the puzzle for us," co-founder and president Monique Farantzos told the website.
The new service is known as AirTwist, which comes as part of the paid-for version of the DoubleTwist app. Existing customers get the feature for free.
The recent update enables wireless syncing OTA with your PC or Mac and now wireless sharing with your games consoles over your home network.
The DoubleTwist Player is available as a free app for wired syncing. DoubleTwist AirSync, however, is Ł3.11 and offers the wireless syncing and new PS3 and Xbox beaming.

Take one dose of improper generalization, mix it in with a heaping of condescension, and then add a pinch of good old sexism. What do you get? This quote, coming from Frank Meehan, CEO of the Android handset-making INQ:
"If you go to a nightclub in any city in the world, the pretty girl has an iPhone or a BlackBerry. She doesn't have an Android phone. She has no emotional attachment to an Android phone. It's too complicated. It's a geek device, it's all wrong."
Now, before you go emailing him photos of the Android tattoo girl, there is undeniably some smidgen of truth to the man's words. Android is a geek's dream ecosystem and it's not necessarily the most accessible platform in the world, but to completely write it off for the nightclub-going lady demographic doesn't strike us -- or Justin Timberlake, or Chad Ochocinco -- as the most astute idea in the world.

It looks like the iControlPad may be getting some real competition, real fast. Game-Gripper is a new concept for adding real gaming controls to smartphones via a universal clamp-on hardware game pad. To ensure compatibility with as many devices as possible, the Game-Gripper attaches to your phone via a spring-loaded clamp to hold the device in place, and it relies on Bluetooth connectivity rather than physical I/O ports so there's no need to worry about which phone you have. The website flaunts a number of Android phones, apparently already compatible with the device, as it relies on industry-standard Bluetooth HID profiles to remain friendly with just about any phone. iPhone compatibility is mentioned here-and-there, but no solid claims are made, as compatibility with individual games and emulators relies solely on the developer's willingness to implement support for it.

The New York Times said today that they have information that points to Apple not releasing an iPhone nano. In the report they reference "people who have been briefed on Apple's plans," just the next generation iPhone, expected to launch this summer.
The Times points to the fact that this 'nano' phone would not necessarily be any cheaper to produce or sell, and that a smaller screen size would make porting apps difficult. The same report also mentions something we've heard a bunch of times before, that MobileMe will be overhauled, possibly be free, and may introduce cloud syncing.
If you're unfamiliar with the many rumors regarding the presumed iPhone nano (which the Times says will never come to fruition), check out the article from a few days ago that rounds up a majority of the rumors. I've got to to side with the NY Times on this. I really don't think... [Read More]

Despite Steve Jobs's repeated avowals to the contrary, reports persist of a smaller form-factor tablet. The latest spate of rumors take a new tack on the idea, however: rather than being a small iPad, the new 5- to 7-inch device might in fact be a large iPhone, sized to compete with not only small tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the BlackBerry PlayBook, but also larger smartphones like the Dell Streak.
Ming-Chi Kuo, the Concord Securities analyst formerly with the Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, told AppleInsider that Apple is looking into a mid-sized iOS device that it would bring to market possibly as soon as fall 2011. With a screen somewhere in between 5 and 7 inches, Kuo said he was "not sure" if the new device would released as a small iPad or a large iPhone/iPod touch. A separate report by a ... [Read More]

A new mystery data connection, rumoured to be included on the iPad 2 and an unannounced new MacBook Pro, will be capable of ultra fast transfers exceeding 10Gbps.
Named ‘Light Peak’ and developed in co-operatively between Apple and Intel, the new tech will transfer data at twice the speed of the fledgling USB3 connection, which tops out at 4.8Gbps
Although the touted speeds seem excessive, it would reduce the lengthy time required to sync iPods and iPhones with home computers. With syncing a key element in Apple’s mobile devices strategy, such a high-speed port would be a worthwhile investment.
A new MacBook Pro carrying Light Peak is rumoured to be shipping this week. Apple have halted all current orders for the laptop until new models arrive this Thursday, Geek.com reports.
Apple has made no announcement regarding either Light Peak or potential new products.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson has revealed that he is to bring the building and survival indie game to iPhone and iPad.
GamaSutra obtained confirmation of the new version, with Persson claiming that mobile Minecraft will only contain features and updates which "make sense" for touch-based controls.
The digitally-distributed game has sold over 1 million copies since its soft launch in 2009, and currently remains at beta stage.
One-man creator Persson was able to found his own studio, Mojang Specifications, as a result of Minecraft's initial success - achieved entirely without advertising or a publisher.

We won't lie: we did feel a little put out when our pal Jon Rubinstein told us that webOS 2.0 wouldn't be coming to the Palm Pre Plus -- something about the older hardware not having the necessary "oomph" to handle the new OS. But perhaps all hope is not lost! According to a rep from O2 Germany (as espied on the company's support forums) HP will make with the new operating system at some point in the near future -- just not as an over-the-air update. When the time comes (indeed, if the time comes) you'll need to download it from HP's website not your computer and install it via USB. And maybe that will be the point when we discover the joys of running a new OS on an underpowered handset for ourselves!

When your tablet needs a windowed UI, has it crossed some undrawn, implied boundary that makes it too complex for the kinds of casual tasks you'd want to accomplish on a tablet? Hard to say, but the mobile developers at Ixonos took to MWC last week to showcase a windowed build of Android on top of a tablet developed by Aava -- so at the very least, we know it's possible. The system is built atop Froyo and allows apps to continue running in the background -- they don't suspend, which means you can, say, play a video while you're off composing messages. The company also demonstrated the software on a dual-screen 7-inch tablet, allowing apps to be launched on either screen and transferred between them -- all seemingly without any customizations needed to individual apps, which is going to be key for a system like this to gain any market traction.

This year's Mobile World Congress was the stage for dozens of new tablets. Unfortunately, Android Honeycomb tablets lacked presence; amongst the top Android tablets demonstrated at the show, only the Motorola Xoom was running Honeycomb, whereas others were running either Android 2.3 or older versions. Moreover, most of the top apps announced for the OS were not new, just reworked. Gigaom may believethat Honeycomb tablets will be iPad's true competition, but progress has been slow, in my opinion. Honeycomb was born too early, primarily out pressure from the iPad getting a one year headstart in the tablet market.http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...Born-Too-Early

In the wake of Nokia's announcement that it will be cheerfully throwing its existing developer community under a bus by not offering Qt for Windows Phone, a project to implement Qt on Android has announced its initial alpha release. Necessitas project lead Bogdan Vatra writes, 'I had a dream that one day, I'll be able to deploy existing Qt software on any Android platform. I had a dream that one day, all Qt applications will use system wide shared Qt libraries. I had a dream that one day, all Qt applications once compiled and deployed to one android platform, will run on any other newer android platform and will last for years without any recompilation. I had a dream that one day, I'll be able to create, manage, compile debug and deploy Qt apps using a first class citizen IDE. Now, those dreams become reality.' The Necessitas wiki offers some documentation on Qt for Android. A is also available."http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...droid-Released

You've heard that it was en route, and you've seen the preview. Now, it's time to enter the wild, wacky world of Android 3.0 for yourself. Honeycomb's SDK is now available for all developers to download, with the API's being deemed final and able to withstand new apps that will target the fresh platform. We'd bother spilling the beans on the added features, but we know you've already torn your left click button off in a frantic race to the source link. Simmer down, son -- the URL ain't going anywhere.

We found out yesterday that Motorola's Xoom would be shippingsans Flash support on Verizon Wireless, and while Big Red claimed that an update would be doled out this spring, the folks at Adobe are pointing to a far more specific time frame. In a new post over at the Flash Platform Blog, Adobe has confirmed that "Flash Player 10.2 [will be] pre-installed on some tablets and as an OTA download on others within a few weeks of Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) devices becoming available, the first of which is expected to be the Motorola Xoom." We're guessing that the company's going public with a statement like this to fend off fears that the Xoom may be waiting an eternity for Flash, in essence removing a bit of fear from hesitant early adopters. Either way, it's excellent news for those eying a Honeycomb tablet of any flavor, and we're going to take the liberty of taking "a few weeks" to mean "a fortnight." Cool, Adobe?

We didn't have much luck using the oStylus as a paint brush, but even the creator confessed that it was never intended for such chores. Thankfully, the Nomad Brush was concocted specifically for those chores. What you're looking at above is a paint brush that's designed for use with capacitive screens, and it could very well spark a modern day renaissance... or something of the sort. The brush is topped with capacitive fibers that the iPhone, Galaxy Tab and iPad (among other tablets and phones) can recognize, enabling you artsy folk to express yourselves even when it's impractical to tote around a suitcase full of watercolors. Head on past the break for an (admittedly impressive) video, and pop the source link to hand over $24 in exchange for a shipping label. Just promise us you'll keep it away from any actual paint buckets, okay?

It's the perfect rumor: the officially delayed and frequently tattled white iPhone 4 has reemerged as the white iPhone 5 riding a horned stallion through virgin rumor fields. According to the Economic Daily News, the previously unheard of white iPhone 5 will feature a touch panel supplied exclusively by Wintek. If true, then the white iPhone 4, officially scheduled for a spring 2011 launch, should be available just prior to the launch of the next generation white iPhone 5, anticipated for a summer launch in keeping with Apple's typical launch cycle. Not exactly ideal, but hey, it's only the first of many related rumors to come.

Citing supplier checks, a Taiwanese research firm is claiming that the iPad 2 launch may be delayed to June due to production problems. Bloomberg is quoting Yuanta Securities analysts as saying that design changes that Apple requested are leading to issues in manufacturing at Foxconn, which saw its parent company's stock drop to its lowest price since December after the report.
According to other reports out of the Asian supply chain, production of the new iPad began at the start of 2011 and was halted for the Chinese New Year holiday this month. Analysts Vincent Chen and Allison Chen told Bloomberg that Apple... [Read More]

9to5 Mac has gotten their hands on what is purported to be a case for the long awaited iPad 2. The dimensions of the case indicate that the next iPad will be incredibly thin. This silicon case has most of the design features that have been rumored for some time now, but also leaves room for a mystery or two. If this new case design proves to be accurate, then it could point to something entirely new for the Apple tablet.
This new case has room for all the standard features on the current iPad model and a has room for few more as well. The 30-pin dock connector is right where it should be, as is the headphone jack and power button. The volume buttons are also in their normal place, but that’s where the similarities end.
At the bottom of the case there’s a large cutout for what’s assumed to be the speaker. It’s widely believed that Apple wants to improve the quality of the... [Read More]

RUMOUR WATCH: Claims that the second coming of Apple tabletry is at hand
One online news source has claimed that Apple will reveal its iPad 2 in just one week's time.
All Things Digital says it has confirmation from "multiple sources" that the US tech form is preparing a March 2nd gathering in San Francisco.
There's even talk that Steve Jobs himself will be at hand, despite currently being on a leave of absence due to health issues.
As for the device itself, it's all a guessing game for now but the safe bets point to integrated front and rear cameras and some sort of improved display, though many reckon Apple has abandoned plans to incorporate an iPhone 4 style retina display into the machine.
There's also been plenty of talk about the possible ditching of the front facing 'Home' button, with Apple said to be keen on ditching all physical controls for its future iOS product ranges.

No word on whether Steve Jobs will present the new tablet
The official iPad 2 unveiling will take place on March 2, it has been confirmed.
There is good evidence to suggest the iPad 2 will be lighter and thinner, with a front-facing camera and a Qualcomm chip.
Thanks to Apple fanatics around the globe we know about host of features which iPad 2 mighthave, ranging from retina display to an ultra-fast ‘thunderbolt’ data transfer port.
A Reuters source has also rubbished claims the forthcoming tablet was experiencing production problems. The Apple insider told the media agency that the Taiwanese research company was wrong. The iPad 2 is expected to reach retail by April.
Apple have released a teaser image with date and the tagline “come see what 2011 will be the year of” – an upfront response to industry theory that the new iPad will lose sales to other tablets due for launch this year.
Apple have sold around 15 million iPads to date.
The launch will take place at the Yerba Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10:00am Pacific time.

Apple and music labels are reportedly in discussions to raise the audio quality of of the songs they sell to 24-bit. The move could see digital downloads that surpass CD quality, which is recorded at 16 bits at a sample rate of 44.1kHz. It would also provide Apple and the music labels with an opportunity to 'upgrade' people's music collections, raising extra revenue in the process. The big question is whether anyone would even notice the difference between 16-bit and 24-bit files on a portable player, especially with the low-quality earbuds supplied by Apple and other manufacturers. Labels such as Linn Records already sell 'studio master' versions of albums in 24-bit FLAC format, but these are targeted at high-end audio buffs with equipment of a high enough caliber to accentuate the improvement in quality."http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...usic-Downloads

There's not exactly any shortage of ways to mount your iPhone or iPod touch to your bike, but there's decidedly fewer options that actually turn your iOS device into a full-fledged cycling computer that's able to replace those from the likes of Garmin. This new iBike Dash device promises to do just that, though. It not only houses your device is a protective, waterproof shell, but it includes an ANT+ speed sensor and is compatible with other ANT+ devices so you can measure heart rate and cadence. It also has room for an extra rechargeable battery to extend your run time, and it naturally makes use of a free app that takes advantage of your iPhone's GPS capabilities (no built-in GPS here to help out iPod touch users). Of course, all that means this one also costs considerably more than a simple bike mount -- look for the basic model to set you back $199, while the deluxe package (including cadence and HR monitors along with an extra battery and charger) runs $329.

Do you ever wish for an easier way to show your uninitiated friends what you mean when you say Android is growing? Well, here's the video for you: a Google-produced map of the world that throbs with Android activations over time, highlighted by some truly eye-opening flourishes in the immediate aftermath of marquee handset launches. The Google guys have even given us handy countdown timers -- "Droid launch in 3, 2, 1..." -- and broken things down by continent for easier viewing. Only thing missing is a soundtrack, so just have your Tron: Legacy OST loaded up and ready before jumping past the break.

The Apple rumors game can be a volatile thing. Just as we'd heard about last minute alterations to the Apple TV before it hit the market, we've gotten word from sources that the iPad 2 slated to be announced next Wednesday will be sans a few of the features we'd previously reported. Notably, that SD card slot and higher resolution display won't make it into the new model (the latter we'd been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague "engineering issues" which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour. It's worth noting once again that these sources have been dead right on specific Apple plans and specifications for unannounced products in the past, and we have no reason to believe these changes are due to anything more than legitimate engineering decisions made close to launch.
So what will we see on March 2nd? We're hearing it's most likely a thinner, spec-bumped variation of the original iPad with a screen size and resolution identical to the current model. More RAM (512MB) and a more powerful CPU (the A5) are expected as well. It's also a pretty safe bet the tablet will be sporting at least one camera up front -- though if some of those case mockups we've seen tell us anything, expect a shooter around back too. It's also almost guaranteed that we'll see the next version of iOS (number 5 in all likelihood, along with its SDK for devs), and an expansion of Apple's cloud services (that part is a little... foggy right now). Of course, that will perfectly set up Apple's announcement of the iPhone 5 in June, which is when iPad owners can likely expect to be using the new software. Regardless, we'll have the goods come next week, so stay tuned!

A runaway rumor being taken as reality by some today is that the iPad 2 will sport a carbon fiber body shell instead of an aluminum encasing in an effort by Apple to make the tablet lighter and sleeker. But as John Gruber of Daring Fireball cautions, there is no concrete evidence to chalk this feature up as a given in the same way we can assuredly expect a front-facing camera for FaceTime chats on the 2nd-gen iPad.
John Gruber only mentioned in a footnote - yes, in a footnote - that he is “half-sure” about the iPad 2 getting a carbon fiber shell, a persistent suspicion that has lingered practically since the iPad was released one year ago. The actual blog post that started the carbon fiber discussion wasn't even about the removal of the iPad's aluminum shell. Rather, Gruber was aiming to address Engadget's report about there being no retina display on the iPad 2.
In speaking one set of iPad 2 rumors, it appears that another sprouted new legs. But.

Following a report that iPad 2 production was backlogged, pushing the ship date of the refreshed tablet into the summer, we're now hearing indications that they'll be in stores as early as next week. AppleInsider is quoting the well-known "people familiar with the matter" as saying that at least some iPad 2s "will be in transit to retail outlets" during next Wednesday's announcement.
Last week, Taiwanese research firm Yuanta said that there had been production problems with the second-generation iPad that would delay the release by as much as two months. Though ...

Speculation about the next iPhone model has vacillated between the device being either much larger or very much smaller. Apple may choose to release both a larger version and a smaller, cheaper model at the same time, however. On the larger front, a new image has just surfaced that shows what is purported to be an iPhone 5 front panel. If this image is an authentic, then Apple may indeed be increasing the size of the iPhone 5’s screen. This would make the next iPhone model more competitive with other manufactures handsets, many of which already include a 4-inch screen.
Apple is believed to be redesigning the next iPhone model and may include a 4-inch screen with a smaller bezel. It’s difficult to get any measurements from this image without an object to reference it with. If this does turn out to be a genuine Apple component, then they may in fact be releasing the iPhone 5 with a thinner bezel and an edge-to edge screen. I would love to see this component sitting next to an iPhone 4...

T-Mobile cares about you. It cares so much that it's spending all its advertising dollars lately making sure you know full well that the iPhone 4 can't do "4G" the way its own phones can. The latest salvo in thiscrusade of enlightenment includes the above graphs showing just how much faster and further your money can go if you ride along on the Magenta network. It conveniently ignores the fact that AT&T and Verizon offer other phones besides Apple's iPhone, some of which can handle speeds above the 3G threshold, but such is the price you pay when you want to have a really pretty and eye-catching chart. Hit the source link to soak up more of T-Mobile's priceless wisdom.

A new photo leaked from Shenzen allegedly reveals that we may see a white iPad 2 at Wednesday's event. The photo shows a front bezel of what we believe to be the iPad 2, except this time it's in white. We all know the saga about the white iPhone 4, which was delayed over and over again by Apple, but maybe Apple finally got their problems worked out for the iPad, and plan to unveil both colors at the March 2 media event. At this point it seems the white iPhone 4 will never happened, but that doesn't mean we couldn't see it on an iPad first.
Apple is wildly expected to announce the iPad 2 at its event Wednesday, which is scheduled for 10 AM Pacific Time. The new iPad is expected to be thinner, with a faster processor, and improved graphics.

The wait for an iPhone4 unlock for iPhone 4s newer basebands has dragged on and on. Six weeks ago, MuscleNerd released the " official iPhone unlock statement," which is that the unlock won't be released until iOS 4.3 is out of beta. There's been very little news since then, but with 4.3 apparently on the verge of its official release, @MuscleNerd and Egyptian baseband superhacker @Sherif_Hashim have given encouraging signs that the unlock will be available by the deadline, with Sherif working on an exploit that unlocks both the 3.10.01 and 2.10.04 basebands and MuscleNerd targeting the newer 4.10.01 baseband for 4.3 beta 3.
The Dev-Team has been keeping a low profile as 4.3 works its way through beta,

On Monday, a new photo of a supposed iPhone 5 part surfaced, sparking further speculation about what phsyical attributes Apple's fifth generation iPhone will sport. The image in question puts the spotlight on a 30-pin dock connector cable (part designated 821-1300-02 HF/c1.) that is rumored to be an integral part of the iPhone 5. Originating overseas, the pic first surfaced on apple.pro.
Additional details speak to the recently suspected sliding screen cover that could very well indicate the iPhone's adoption of a physical keyboard for the first time in the device's life. According to the Chinese report, other recent photos that have surfaced (specifically, of the larger edge-to-edge screen) are, in fact, fake. Of course, at this stage in the game it's impossible to decipher reality from rumors. But the apple.pro revelation suggests that Apple will take a completely different direction with the...

ngmoco's push onto Android platforms is being challenged by multiple hardware and software choices, a lack of analytics feedback and problems with discoverability on the mobile store.
That's according to Caryl Shaw, executive producer for ngmoco, who said today at GDC that working on Android systems was akin to PC game development, compared to iOS's console-like ease.
"We're still spending a lot of time looking at how we develop games. Really the next thing for us is thinking about how we're going to bring the energy to Android products. We're really starting to work in earnest on Android now with ngCore, which is our new game engine that we're working on," she told attendees.
"The things that we find is device compatibility is really challenging on Android. Mostly I feel like we're actually going back to doing PC development because there's so many different types of hardware, there's so many different software operating systems on all the different Android devices that our testing matrix is crazy-huge. I feel like I went to console development when I went to iOS with iPhone and iPad both running the same iOS. Android much more challenging that way.
"Every time I pick up a different Android device they all use the back button differently, I'm very confused by it. So that's been more complex, definitely more challenging. It's something we should be getting educated about now," she said.
While ngmoco has been able to carve a lucrative path on iOS devices by releasing freemium games, it's now looking to Android to continue growth in mobile.
Shaw detailed the scale of which it uses analytics to improve games once they have gone live, turning data in the first updates for titles within a couple of days of release and pushing out new content based on consumer habits two or three times a week.
But this is proving tricky for the company on Android, with Shaw also highlighting the problem of users discovering a game on a crowded app store.
"Discoverability on the Android store is really tough, that's something that's going to be evolving. I'd imagine that's like the App Store was a couple of years ago. It's a very, very young, immature market right now.
"And getting analytics is more challenging," she added. "We have a lot of analytics that we build into our games - there doesn't seem to be a lot that I get out of Google's dev portal. That's definitely still a quite challenging area for us. There's a lot of learning that's still to be done."
