Remember that nondescript heart-rate monitoring belt we peeked back in June? Now you know the company that's tossing out purchase orders for 'em. Wahoo Fitness has just revealed that it'll soon be shipping its own branded version of the product -- dubbed BlueHR -- and at least for now, it'll work exclusively with the iPhone 4S. Why, you ask? The 4S just so happens to have Bluetooth 4.0, and this here belt happens to utilize that very protocol. In a brief demo vid (embedded after the break), the company demonstrates it beaming out vitals to a nearby iPhone, and we're told that it'll be "compatible with all the top running apps like Runkeeper [as well as with] Wahoo's own free app." We're guessing that the outfit will do everything it can to have this guy out by Christmastime, but for now, you can start pinching pennies in an effort to afford the looming $79.99 sticker.

Oh, heck yeah. We've already been delighted by the news that C-Spire (the hip carrier formerly known as Cellular South) is the lucky recipient of the iPhone 4S, but we now have a date -- and it's coming up pretty fast. Both the 4S and the 4 will be ready for your purchase on November 11th, unsurprisingly for the same exact cost as the big three national carriers: $99 for the 8GB iPhone 4 and $199-399 for the iPhone 4S, but the deal's sweetened by the offering of unlimited data (though the two lowest plans exclude streaming). If you're down with that, it's a good idea to head over to the site and get pre-registered as soon as possible. Now that the little guys officially have the iconic device, who's next? Full press release after the break.

Lookie here -- an iPad app just got miniaturized. It's not too often we see the progress work in reverse, but one of Apple's flagship iPad programs has just been converted for use on the iPhone and iPod touch. It doesn't seem as if too much is changing -- outside of the shrunken display options, of course. You can still plug your electric guitar into either of Apple's more bantam iOS devices in order to record through classic amps and stompbox effects, or record your voice or any acoustic sound using the built-in microphone. The app enables users to record and mix up to eight tracks and then share the finished product with friends or send it to your Mac to keep working on it in GarageBand (the "real one") or Logic Pro. It'll run new users $4.99, but if you already purchased the iPad build, it's a free update to get the new ports. Oh, and if you're curious, the app now runs on iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPod touch (third and fourth generation). Tap the iTunes link below to snag your own copy.

As promised, our favorite cigar smoking, wise cracking first-person protagonist has hit the Android Market, and it didn't even take 15 years. The mobile version of the classic FPS is available now for Android 1.6 and up (that's according to the Market listing -- its producers recommend 2.1 and up), courtesy of Tapjoy and Machineworks Northwest as a $0.99 download. And don't worry, there's plenty of Duke to go around.

In case you weren't aware, Apple's sold a whole lot of iPad 2s, so aside from the couple of bezel color choices or adding a Smart Cover, there's not much you can do to make your tablet stand out from the crowd. Well, now there's another option for the well-heeled gadget lover. Stuart Hughes is back with another custom gadget for the economic elites called the iPad 2 Gold History Edition. It's got a solid gold backside, an Apple logo and home button crafted from a total of 65 flawless diamonds, plus a bezel crafted from Ammolite rock and slivers of thigh bone from a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Between all that ice and prehistoric bling, there won't be a problem picking this iPad out of a lineup. What is a problem (for most of us, anyway) is the price: eight million dollars. We dig the dino look and all, but that's an awfully hefty entrance fee -- we'd rather buy a stock slate and take a few dozen trips to the final frontier instead.

Anecdotal reports have been pouring in since iOS 5 landed that battery life had suddenly dropped off on some people's iPhones. A full 15-percent of you who responded to our poll reported suffering from the issue. Now Apple has officially confirmed that several bugs are negatively affecting battery life. In a statement given to All Things D the Cupertino company acknowledged the problem and said it would "release a software update to address those [bugs] in a few weeks." In recent days the complaints in both the Apple forums and our own tips box have reached a deafening volume but, sadly, Apple isn't offering any temporary work arounds or advice for those constantly attached to a charger. So there you go folks -- Apple is working on it. You're the patient type, right?
Update: Well, iOS 5.0.1 Beta, which includes the aforementioned bug fixes, just landed for devs. So Apple isn't just working on it, they've fixed it... theoretically. Lets hope this test run is a bit shorter than expected.

Alcatel One Touch, best known for Android phones that'll give your bank balance a mere glancing blow, is purportedly going big. New Mobile managed to get its hands on the One Touch 995, which will apparently be decked out with a 1.4GHz processor and a gratifying 4.3-inch touchscreen to show off the latest version of Gingerbread. Alcatel has managed to cocoon all this, alongside a five megapixel shooter, into a shell apparently "less than a centimeter thick." What really caught our attention, however, is the apparent promise from the company that Ice Cream Sandwich will be making an appearance on the handset. We're still waiting for the official word from Alcatel, but the phone is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2012, with a very tempting €200 ($276) price tag -- a nice price for a large screen Android handset. See more of the One Touch 995 hardware at the source link below.

Why are there so many free games listed in the top 10 grossing games over in Apple's App Store? Because some feature exorbitant in-app purchase fees for virtual items. Quoting ZDNet: 'Developing "free" games aimed specifically at children, and then bundling ridiculously priced in-app purchases inside those "free" games feels scammy to me. Sure, it's not illegal, and it's not against Apple's developer terms and conditions, but Apple is a company that prides itself in protecting users from harm. Most of the game developers do make an attempt to warn users that the game "changes real money for additional in-app content" but it's a lame attempt. It's easily missed, and kids aren't going to read it anyway.

GameStop will begin selling a range of game-focused Android tablet devices online and in selected US stores on November 4.
The tablets sold in-store are the Acer Iconia 7-inch (8GB/$329.99), the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 10.1-inch (16GB/$399), and the Samsung Galaxy 10.1-inch (16GB/$499).
Each comes pre-loaded with six free games: Dead Space, Re-Load, Sonic CD, Monster Madness, Riptide and Cordy. The tablets will also come with the digital version of Game Informer magazine and the Kongregate Arcade app.
The devices will go on sale on Friday at 200 GameStop stores, before being rolled out across company's entire network.
A Bluetooth wireless controller, designed by GameStop's internal R&D department to work with the three tablets, is available for an additional $39.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in September, GameStop president Tony Bartel said the pad was intended to encourage the development of more immersive games for tablets.
"There's not a lot of tablet/Android based games for the consumer that are designed to use an external controller," he said. "Our thought is that the tablet is a great immersive gaming device so it's hard for us to envision how that tablet will really function as such without some sort of controller."
"So we've created a controller that we're testing to really allow for immersive gameplay. It's hard to imagine how to stream a game - let' say Modern Warfare 3 - onto a tablet and then play it with your finger."
GameStop is also developing a cloud-based streaming service that will work in conjunction with the tablet devices.

If you're the lucky owner of a rare 2011 TouchPad, the onus is on you to keep it clean, polished and updated. Sure, you've already got a decent Twitter client in the form Spaz HD, and you're getting extra snappy performance from webOS 3.0.4, but web chatter indicates that something even better could be on the horizon. Developers have started tweeting via 'webOS Synergy', possibly hinting that integrated Twitter could be on the way in 3.0.5. What's more, another TouchPad owner running that newfangled version has submitted an impressive score to Lithium BenchMark, suggesting it might deliver a performance bump too. The duck may be dead, but the dream lives on.

Detest checking your email constantly for the latest offer from Google? If you've got an Android 2.1+ device, the Goog itself just outed an alternative. The Google Offers app just went live in the Android Market, bringing deals near your current (select) location into an easy-to-digest piece of mobile software. No, NFC's not required, and yes, you can redeem it straight from the phone -- so long as the store you're visiting has someone with intellect and eyes. Hit the source link (or the Market on your handset) to get your download on, and feel free to chuckle as you realize that it'll remain up way longer than Gmail did for iOS.

Gary Morgenthaler, a recognized expert in artificial intelligence and a Siri board member, says that Apple now has at least a two-year advantage over Google in the war for best smartphone platform. 'What Siri has done is changed people's expectations about what's possible,' says Morgenthaler. 'Apple has crossed a threshold; people now expect that you should be able to expect to speak ordinary English — and be understood. Siri has cracked the code.' The threshold, from mere speech recognition to natural language input and understanding, is one that Google cannot cross by replicating the technology or making an acquisition adds Morgenthaler. 'There's no company out there they can go buy.' Morgenthaler's comments echo the recent article in Forbes Magazine, 'Why Siri Is a Google Killer' that says that Apple's biggest advantage over any other voice application out there today is the massive data Siri will collect in the next 2 years — all being stored in Apple's massive North Carolina data center — that will allow Siri to get better and better. 'Siri is a new interface for customers wanting to get information,' writes Eric Jackson. 'At the moment, most of us still rely on Google for getting at the info we want. But Siri has a foot in the door and it's trusting that it will win your confidence over time to do basic info gathering.'"

Frozen Synapse, the game of intense, turn-based tactical planning and sudden simultaneous execution, is coming to the iPad. Posting on developer Mode 7's blog, managing director Paul Taylor reveals that the tablet version has been "in the works for a while," having already appeared in playable form at a pub meetup. Taylor says we can expect it sometime within the first half of next year, if all goes to plan.
Also part of the plan: cross-platform play between the iPad and other versions of Frozen Synapse. Taylor adds that the focus on the capable iPad port won't detract from existing platforms -- "we're actually working right now to hire another team member so we can give it more attention and update it more efficiently."
At the moment, Mode 7 consists of three core developers and a "group of trusted freelancers." Frozen Synapse has gained a lot of indie buzz in recent months, especially after becoming the star attraction in a recent Humble Indie Bundle.

Apple will launch iPad 3 and iPhone 5 in 2012, as well as overhaul its iMac and MacBook Air lines, according to a DigiTimes report.
The publication, which covers the semiconductor, electronics and computer industries in Taiwan and China, claims to have been informed by "sources in the upstream supply chain" that Apple will finalise order volumes for key components for the next-gen iPad in December.
The company is said to be planning to order enough components to produce two million iPad 3 units by the end of 2011. It has reportedly instructed manufacturers to develop flat panel modules and LED light bars for two prototypes models, codenamed J1 and J2.
DigiTimes added that the iPhone 5 and next-generation iMac are unlikely to be revealed until the second half of next year.

Dost a company actually dare turn down the seductive wiles of the iPhone? As a matter of fact, there is at least one US carrier that has the audacity to say no to Tim Cook's face: US Cellular. During her company's quarterly earnings call, CEO Mary Dillon mentioned that the mobile provider was given the opportunity to sell the iPhone, but Apple's "terms were unacceptable" when considering the risk and profitability involved. It's bad news for anyone on US Cellular that was remotely interested in grabbing one; the good news, however, is that the fact the opportunity was even available -- paired with C-Spire's intentions of selling the devices next week -- will at least give hope to customers of the little guys. Cricket? Cincinnati Bell? Who's up next?

In a move that can be simultaneously described as puzzling and pragmatic, Microsoft has decided to bring its Bing for Mobile app to Android and iOS before launching it on its very own Windows Phone platform. The company announced the release in a blog post this week, highlighting the app's most noteworthy features, including a revamped maps module, a new deals service and real-time transit feeds. Interestingly enough, Redmond also based its app on HTML5, rather than Silverlight, in the hopes of providing greater continuity across mobile browser and app interfaces. Only at the very end of the post did Microsoft mention Windows Phone 7: "We're working to release the same consistent experience for RIM and Windows Phone 7 devices in the future, and will share more details as they become available." At first glance, this decision may seem somewhat counterintuitive, but it also makes a lot of sense, considering the fact that Android and iOS comprise the bulk of the consumer market (and, of course, the fact that Bing is already integrated within Windows Phone 7). It appears, then, that Microsoft is simply trying to get Bing out to the widest initial audience, which seems pretty logical. Android and iOS users can grab the app now, at the coverage links below.

Nick Wingfield writes in the NY Times that Apple's present pricing strategy is a big change from the 1990s, when consumers regarded Apple as a producer of overpriced tech baubles, unable to compete effectively with its Macintosh family of computers against the far cheaper Windows PCs. Now within the premium product categories where Apple is most at home, comparable devices often do no better than match or slightly undercut Apple's prices. 'They're not cheap, but I don't think they're viewed as high-priced anymore,' says Stewart Alsop. Winfield writes that Apple uses its growing manufacturing scale and logistics prowess to deliver Apple products at far more aggressive prices, which in turn gives it more power to influence pricing industrywide, and one of Apple's pricing secrets has been it's willingness to tap into its huge war chest — $82 billion in cash and marketable securities last quarter — to take big gambles by locking up supplies of parts for years

Apple's vice president of global security has reportedly stepped down, roughly two months after the surfacing of news reports that an iPhone prototype had gone missing for the second time in less than two years. John Theriault, who came to Apple from Pfizer and was a former FBI agent, has retired in the wake of controversy regarding the device's disappearance and the subsequent efforts to track it down. Apple did not return a request for comment. Nevertheless, Theriault's departure follows a public relations dustup that began when an Apple employee left the prototype at a bar in San Francisco.

It's another nail in the coffin of expensive, dirty, smelly physical cash and coins. PayPal has released the 3.0 version of its Android app and, through that, users can directly exchange money from one NFC-equipped phone to another. Just add the Request Money widget to your (probably already rather cluttered) desktop, type in an amount, then pick up your Nexus S and do a little fist bump with your best bro's celly -- assuming said bro has a similarly near field communication-equipped Android device. Of course, you can still use Bump to exchange cash if you like, but neither that nor NFC will ensure your friend will ever actually pay you back. Maybe that's something Bluetooth 4.0 can manage.

Reuters reports HP is seeking to sell WebOS, at the bidding of its financial advisers. Sounds like open sourcing it is off the table. From the article: 'HP is trying to figure out how to recoup its investment in Palm, viewed by many analysts and investors as an expensive foray into the smartphone market that has not paid off. Several technology companies have expressed an interest in buying the division, which is seen as attractive for its patents, the sources said. Amazon.com Inc, Research In Motion, IBM, Oracle Corp and Intel Corp are considered to be among the companies likely to be interested in the asset, industry sources said.

At the SysCan conference in Taiwan next week, Charlie Miller plans to present a method that exploits a flaw in Apple's restrictions on code signing on iOS devices, the security measure that allows only Apple-approved commands to run in an iPhone's or iPad's memory. Using his method, an app can phone home to a remote computer that downloads new unapproved commands onto the device and executes them at will, including stealing the user's photos, reading contacts, making the phone vibrate or play sounds, or otherwise using iOS app functions for malicious ends. Miller created a proof-of-concept app called Instastock that appears to show stock tickers but actually runs commands from his server, and even got it approved by Apple's App Store."Update: 11/08 02:54 GMT by U L : Not unexpectedly, Apple revoked Miller's developer license.

The App Store may have shaken the very foundations of the traditional games industry, but Apple isn’t blind to the growing competition it faces.
The result, Brand Republic reports, is that the company is looking to hire a digital marketing team for Europe “to lead the reinvigoration of its App Store by making it a more attractive proposition both to brands and consumers in the face of growing competition”.
It is also creating a number of new marketing roles as part of the expansion.
It is also claimed that amongst the ideas Apple is considering is the possible addition of fresh editorial, advertising and product placement options within the App Store.
Apple faces competition from all sides right now. Google’s Android OS – and with it the associated App Store – continues to gain momentum. Add to that the rapidly approaching HTML5 format, which promises feature-rich experiences on any internet-connected device, and Apple cannot afford to rest on its laurels.

Somewhere deep within the bowels of iOS 5 lurks a panoramic camera function, and hacker Conrad Kramer has unlocked it. The trick, according to Kramer (AKA Conradev), is to set the "EnableFirebreak" key to "Yes" within an iOS preference file. Alternatively, you could just grab fellow hacker Grant Paul's Firebreak tweak, which just hit the Cydia storefront this morning. Once installed on your jailbrokenphone, Firebreak will allow you to take full panoramic shots directly from the iOS interface, as pictured above in Paul's screenshot. No word yet on if or when Apple plans on flipping this function live, but in the meantime, you can check out the links below for more details.

"Consumer Reports recommends the iPhone 4S." It's only half a dozen words, but to the engineers (and marketers) at Apple, it spells "relief." After being profusely impacted by Consumer Reports' decision to recommend against buying the iPhone 4 due to those Antennagate issues, the entity has allowed all in Cupertino to breath a sigh of relief by effectively declaring the reception issue dead on the newest edition. To quote:"Apple's newest smart phone performed very well in our tests, and while it closely resembles the iPhone 4 in appearance, it doesn't suffer the reception problem we found in its predecessor in special tests in our labs. In special reception tests of the iPhone 4S that duplicated those we did on the iPhone 4, the newer phone did not display the same reception flaw, which involves a loss of signal strength when you touch a spot on the phone's lower left side while you're in an area with a weak signal. (The iPhone 4, which is still available, continues to exhibit that problem, we confirmed in tests of new samples of the phone. Because of the flaw, we continue to omit the iPhone 4 from our list of recommended models, despite its otherwise fine performance.)"
In other words, even the newer samples of the iPhone 4 (perhaps even that one for Sprint?) continue to have antenna quirks, but at least the latest and greatest seems to have addressed 'em. Hit the source link for the full report.

Well, AT&T doesn't seem too keen on keeping any secrets when it comes to its SoundStream iOS speaker dock. On its way through the FCC today, the little iOS speaker station will act as both a charger and beat blaster for you iPod or iPhone and has Bluetooth baked in. It also offers FM radio, an alarm clock, EQ and local weather information by way of the associated myDock App. So what's in the box? According to the user manual you can expect to find a set of dock adapters (allowing for just about any iPhone or iPod to fit in), the typical AC adapter, a remote control and the docking station itself. It's certainly not the hottest dock we've ever seen, but we'll hold our judgment until we see how the thing actually performs. In the meantime, a very hefty FCC filing awaits you at the source.

We heard the talk and now here's the confirmation: Flash Player for mobile devices is officially dead. Adobe is reaffirming its commitment to "aggressively contribute" to HTML5, a platform with broader support and capabilities than Flash was ever able to deliver. Adobe will of course also be pushing developers to work in its AIR platform for a more native experience, and the company will continue to work on Flash Player for desktop operating systems, but one can't help but see the platform as a whole standing on fairly shaky footing at this point.

WildTangent has launched an app service which allows users to rent or buy Android games from a tightly curated selection of the 13,000 titles available on the system.
The service takes games from many of the platform's biggest publishers and presents them in a way designed to deal with one of the biggest problems for Android developers: discoverability.
"Just like movies and music, consumers prefer to own some titles, rent some and watch some for free, and we've brought these same options to games," said Wild Tangent senior VP Sean Vanderdasson.
"With our new Android service, game developers will expose their games to the widest audience possible, using the most comprehensive business model in the games industry."
Between 75 and 100 titles will be featured on the service, VentureBeat reports. Prices, paid in the company's WildCoin virtual currency, start as low as $0.25 for a 24 hour rental.
WildTangent already runs a similar browser service which amalgamates various games into a portal, and also owns patents on the rental of games using digital currency - a move which could prove remarkably prescient should the service become a success.

Casual gaming company WildTangent has released an app that enables users to rent games for Android devices.
The WildTangent Games App is now available worldwide, and as well as offering rentals can also be used to discover and play free casual games, as well as purchase paid titles. Purchases and rentals are made using the company's virtual currency, WildCoins.
While the app is currently only available in English, it already boasts a strong catalogue of games, including Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja, and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Senior vice president Sean Venderdasson said: "Smartphones and tablets are a great fit for our service as we pride ourselves in offering the best entertainment value for game players. Just like movies and music, consumers prefer to own some titles, rent some and watch some for free, and we've brought these same options to games.
"With our new Android service, game developers will expose their games to the widest audience possible, using the most comprehensive business model in the game industry."

Get ready to fire up iTunes and plug in that iOS device, because Apple's just released iOS 5.0.1. The release notes are identical to the two beta releases, which include fixing bugs relating to battery life and document syncing, while also re-enabling app switching gestures that developers previously had access to on the original iPad. And for those down under, voice recognition has apparently been improved when dictating with an Aussie accent. Those not interested in the 790MB download from iTunes, can look for a 44.6MB delta -- including only the changes -- from their device Settings. You'll find photographic evidence of the latter after the break.

As far as assistants go, Siri can be rather demanding. In fact, she apparently requires that your iPhone 4S's proximity sensor be on whenever the handset's screen is activated. That's the conclusion iFixit arrived at, upon discovering that, unlike previous generations which flip on the sensor upon firing up a phone call or Skype conversation, the 4S kicks on the infrared detectors whenever the screen turns on. The change would allow Siri to detect just how close your face is as you speak to her without the handset pressed up against your face. More details in the video after the break.

We all knew this day would come. It's hardly a tragedy, but some globe-trotting types out there might be a little annoyed. Starting today Sprint is pushing a SIM lock to all iPhone 4Ss on its network. As you may remember, the first batch of Apple handsets sold on bee-hued carrier were unlocked, but the company was perfectly clear that would be changing. A Sprint spokesperson told us this doesn't constitute a change in policy, "think of it as getting the device in compliance." Subscribers in "good standing" for at least 90 days can always call customer service and request the device be unlocked (again). Check out the full explanation of the locking/unlocking policy after the break.

When Adobe announced the death of Flash Player on mobile devices earlier this week, it did so while promising to issue a final version for Android devices and the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now, that promise has come to fruition, with the release of version 11.1. Like pretty much every Adobe update, this latest refresh promises to patch up a host of security flaws -- 12 "critical" ones, to be exact. More intriguing, however, are Adobe's plans for future security support. In a blog post published Wednesday, company exec Danny Winokur confirmed that Adobe will "continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations." This sentiment was echoed in a Twitter post yesterday from Brad Arkin, senior director of product security and privacy: "Adobe will continue to ship security updates for Flash Player mobile after the final feature release." But neither Winokur nor Arkin have specified how long this patch distribution will continue, and the company has yet to offer any sort of timeline for future tablet and smartphone updates. For more information on the latest release, check out the source link below, or hit up the coverage link to grab the Android version for yourself.

True, mommy may not have to drink, but as long as Toys R Us' Nabi tablet is in the house, that cabinet door will always be open. Designed to distract kids aged six years and up, this tot-sized Android slate boasts a seven-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display, 4GB of onboard storage, and a 533MHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU. These certainly aren't the most scintillating specs we've ever come across (even by kiddo tablet standards), but keep in mind that we're talking about six-year-olds, here. They don't know anything. Plus, they'll probably be distracted by the Nabi's customized UI, tailored for so-called "kiddified" browsing, reading and TV watching. If you ever get a hankering to get in on the action yourself, you can always send the beast to time out and play with the tablet yourself, thanks to a built-in "Mommy Mode" that provides a more mature Android experience. No word yet on whether Toys R Us plans to introduce a "Daddy Mode" (or, for that matter, a "Postman Mode"), but that's probably a conversation for another day. Hands-off parents can pre-order the Nabi for $200, at the source link below.

The first rule of being Siri is do not talk about being Siri -- but Jon Briggs, the voice of the iPhone helper's British version, has, fittingly, has bucked that trend. Apple's preference for mystery surrounding the matter hasn't silenced the one-time tech journalist turned voice over actor who discovered that he was the voice of the 4S's assistant upon hearing his "flat and even" readings played back on a commercial for the handset. Briggs told The Telegraph that he recorded the basis for the British Siri five or six years ago, speaking some 5,000 sentences over the course of three weeks for "a decent sum."

[DJ FileSpnR] did a number on this IDJ Live hardware to make room for an integrated iPad. Those that have seen the hardware before may not even recognize it. In stock condition the controller has two turn-table actuators with cross-fader control in between them. The iPad perches on top like a book, making it a fairly bulky setup.
In its hacked format, the device is much more mobile. The physical turntables have been removed, and the center console was moved to one side. This leaves just enough room to fit the iPad 2 (the original iPad is probably too thick for this to work). A cresent of the original turn table bezel has been retained to clamp the iPad in place, and to protect the dock connector at the same time. Now the touchscreen serves as turntable control, with physical sliders to the right which mange the cross-fading.
Check out the video after the break where the DJ explains his alterations and demonstrates the finished project.

You can't expect to see one for "one to two weeks," but those hellbent on holding out for an unlocked iPhone 4S here in the US of A can finally snag one without jetting off to Australia (among other places). Nearly five months to the day after Apple started selling the iPhone 4 in unlocked fashion in the States, the iPhone 4S is joining the club, with a 16GB model going for $649, a 32GB model for $749 and a 64GB variant for $849. Just so you're aware, the unlocked phone enables you to use any micro-SIM from any GSM carrier worldwide, but it won't play nice with CDMA carriers "such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint." And yes, both the black and white versions are up for order. Hit the source link to part ways with your chosen amount of cash.

After offering to swap out a few faulty first gen iPod nanos in Korea back in 2009, it appears Apple has finally seen fit to get them out of owner's pockets here in the US (update: worldwide) too. An email just sent to registered owners (included after the break) and notice posted on its replacement program site inform users the affected units were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. If you have one (seriously, yours still works?), stop using it right now and fill out the form at the link below to order a free replacement unit. The main inconvenience -- other than finding out you've been walking around with the possibility of a "rare case" of overheating taking place in your skinny jeans -- is an anticipated six-week lag between Apple receiving the old unit and shipping you out a replacement.
The reason given for waiting so long to replace them is that when it comes to this issue "the likelihood increases as the battery ages"; that, and it's finally too late for you to run out and get a Zune. No word yet on which models will be sent out as replacements, but if yours is personalized, then sorry -- no inscriptions available.

via http://www.scummvm.org/news/20111111/
It has been over 10 years. We are here thanks to the work of 131 developers. 49,124 commits were made just to the ScummVM tree and those turned into a massive 1,085,714 lines of code (excluding comments) and of course over 7.6 million downloads from the main site alone. I would say those were a great ten years.
The outcome is ScummVM 1.4.0 which we are releasing today, 11/11/11 11:11:11.11.
More games are supported: Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos <SMALL>(based on the same engine as Kyrandia)</SMALL>, the kids' game Blue's Birthday Adventure, and the science fiction game Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch. On top of that, practically all supported Sierra SCI games now have their Amiga versions working. Our musically inclined users will notice PC speaker support in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, CMS support in Loom, The Secret of Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, fixed MIDI in the DOS versions of the Elvira series, and even sound in Winnie the Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood!
As always, there are many more new features; you can find the full list in our release notes and the release itself on our downloads page.
Enjoy!
1.4.0 Release binaries
For a list of changes since the previous version, read the release notes.
1.4.0 is also apt-get'able from Debian unstable (sid).

[Al] at Open Gadgets just put the finishing touches on his . It’s the perfect thing to install on ex-girlfriends’ phones to prevent 2 a.m. drunk dialing.
The project started off as a talking breathalyzer connected to a computer that tweeted your BAC, gave weather and stock readouts, and functioned as a photo booth. Since the first reveal of his project, [Al] moved from the desktop world to the mobile domain.
The breathalyzer itself is contained entirely in an Altoids tin. The build is based on theIOIO board that recently got support for Bluetooth. An alcohol sensor in the project measures the alcohol content of the surrounding atmosphere and reports this back to a phone over Bluetooth. There’s no word if the Android version of [Al]‘s breathalyzer has the Twitter and photo booth functions, they would be relatively easy to add.
While a wirelesss, tweeting breathalyzer lends itself to a competition for a high score, [Al]‘s project could have a few very good implantation; a DIY auto ignition interlock would be a very useful device for some people. Check out the videos of [Al]‘s builds after the break.

A recently published app for the iOS platform uses the propagation of sound waves to measure distances of up to 25 meters in a dual device mode. The technique works through repeatedly sending a chirp signal from the master device to which the other (reflector) device synchronizes itself and then replies in a similar fashion. A novel combination of techniques has been engineered to enhance the robustness in noisy environments, such as using an optimum-autocorrelation-signal and semi-automatic frequency calibration together with an averaging over multiple cycles."

A Samsung executive revealed to Korean Newspaper The Chosun Ilbo today that it will drop its plans to pursue Apple for patent violations in Korea, instead focusing efforts on cases overseas. The anonymous exec cited performance in his company's home country, saying "we concluded that we should engage in legal battles with Apple only in the global market, but not in order to gain more market share in Korea." The move seems logical given the company's existing share, and will allow Samsung to maintain a positive image at home, where it dominates in categories ranging from televisions to refrigerators. So Apple may be in the clear in Sammyland, but the battle will likely continue beyond Korean shores for some time to come.

Look, we understand, some of you are a little timid about jailbreaking your iPhone. You've looked on in envy as your contemporaries have thrown warranties to the wind and enjoyed the convenience of turning on and off their WiFi from the homescreen. But, be jealous no longer. A crafty developer has figured out how to bring the same capabilities your iDevice with little more than a browser bookmark -- no jailbreaking required. IconSettings lets you quickly access or toggle various settings on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, provided its running iOS 5. Setting it up is as simple as saving a bookmark to your home screen. Then you just tap the links and, voilŕ, you can turn on and off Bluetooth, change brightness levels, or disengage autolock. You'll find full instructions and the appropriate bookmarks at the source links.

Samsung and HTC drive growth among consumers that crave fast speeds and large screened devices.
Market researcher Strategy Analytics says superphones are set to become the fastest growing wireless handsets this year.
It claims superphone sales will grow 200 per cent by the close of 2011 driven by devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation.
A superphone by definition is a smartphone device that has a high-grade OS, a 1GHz processor and a display of four-inches or more.
RIM recently announced it will use its BlackBerry PlayBook's QNX OS in smartphones to launch BlackBerry superphones in 2012.
Alex Spektor, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: "Superphones are a relatively new sub-category of wireless handsets that first appeared on the global market in 2009.

Yosi Yaguri, creator of Pah!, says the secret is to charge for your game, wait for the first hacks and then drop the price.
Pah! is the cult game for iPhone and Android that uses tone of voice as the controller. It's a sideways scrolling shooter that requires the player to show 'Pah' to fire bullets.
It's become a big word of mouth hit and has generated a huge number of YouTube clips of people playing it – and laughing uncontrollably.
At today's Power Of One developer event in London, Yaguri revealed that piracy has helped to propagate his game. He said: "We always wait for the hackers to hack the game and then drop the price.
"It's why 99 per cent of our pirates are in China and yet China is also the biggest market for us. And It's why I will never release a game free of charge."

Watery grave revelations comes as 86 per cent of Brits don't insure their phones.
Mobile phone comparison site www.GoodMobilePhones.co.uk reports British mobile users enjoy living on the edge as almost nine in ten haven't insured their phone prior to damaging it.
31 per cent of handset damage is liquid-based, and men appear to be the most clumsy users. Of the water damage victims 73 per cent were male while 27 per cent were women, according to the report.
The top five specific results for water damage includes:
* Dropped in toilet bowl — 47 per cent
* Dropped into/spilled drink— 21 per cent
* Dropped in bath/shower — 12 per cent
* Dropped in Washing-up bowl — seven per cent
* Put in washing machine — three per cent
The report says in addition to the 86 per cent that hadn't insured devices, nine per cent were insured against water damage to their handset and the remaining five per cent were in the dark as to whether their phone was covered for water damage.

If you're chomping at the bit waiting to get your hands on a nice cool piece of Android 4.0, your wait may soon be over. Pending a final go-ahead from the Android Open Source Project, you'll be able to sync the now available Ice Cream Sandwich source code. Due to the "large push" (presumably because of all the changes), the roll out is going to take some time to complete -- project members will give the final word when things are good to go. If you try to sync prematurely, be forewarned that you'll get an incomplete copy that will be useless. The available flavor is 4.0.1 which will be the version to ship on theGalaxy Nexus, the first ICS device. This release also includes "the full history of the Android Code," signaling the first time Honeycomb source has seen daylight. Can't wait for a taste? The extremely impatient can hit that coverage link below, but we prefer our frozen treats to be properly chilled before consumption.

This version primarily adds compatibility for the latest Live web interface. It also adds a couple of features, namely Game totals for the Achievement list, and improved image caching (previously, thumbnails would occasionally refuse to load).
PLEASE NOTE that depending on your provider, it may take a while until you can actually download it. Because the Market app occasionally caches old APK’s, make sure that you install the latest version (4.16) – if it happens to install an older version, uninstall, clear your Market cache, then reinstall.
Thanks for your patience.

Sweet jumpin' Jehoshaphat, it finally happened -- Google Voice for Android now supports sending text messages to multiple recipients. Being able to have a single, archived repository of texts is great, but it was always somewhat bewildering that while you could send a mass SMS from the website you were stuck sending out individual missives on the app. Today's update, version 0.4.2.38, finally gives Voice the power to spam your contacts -- a pretty basic feature that even the lowliest of feature phones enjoys. So what are you waiting for, head over to the Market to get the update now. How else are you going to let all 300 of your closest acquaintances know the next time you're DJing during happy hour?

Market researcher The NPD Group says the percentage of smartphones sold among all handsets in the US has grown from 13 per cent in Q3 2010 up to 59 per cent in this year's third quarter.
Across four quarters running smartphone prices have fallen and the average device for Q3 was priced at $135, according to the report.
The NPD's Smartphone Track service says the price cuts are happening despite consumers that are willing to pay between $200 to $250, which saw 64 per cent end up paying less than $200.
Apple continues domination followed by Android as the top five best-selling Q3 handsets includes:
1. Apple iPhone 4
2. Apple iPhone 3GS
3. HTC EVO 4G
4. Motorola Droid 3
5. Samsung Intensity II

Data protection firm Credant Technologies says that of the 2,200 devices lost in the 15 busiest US shopping malls in 2011, just half were claimed by their owners.
Lost devices weren't just smartphones either as a combination of the mobile phones and tablets accounted for 92 per cent of the missing items, according to the report.
Further results show that 60 per cent of lost devices were found in food courts while 40 per cent were found in toilets, which demonstrates just how reliant consumers have become on their mobiles.
Seán Glynn, marketing VP, Credant Technologies, says: "Unsuspecting smartphone users have become victims of identity theft and fraud crimes perpetrated by criminals and the evidence is that these devices are increasingly a target of choice.
"The vast majority of corporations, and consumers for that matter, are just now realising the inherent dangers that come with having such a plethora of sensitive information stored on these mobile devices."

Apple's long promised cloud music service iTunes Match has finally been rolled out in the US, albeit two weeks late.
iTunes Match is a key strand in Apple's cloud strategy, letting music lovers scan their libraries and then replicate them on the cloud.
The idea is that they can all be replaced by better quality ( 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free) versions or re-downloaded when the user has a device stolen or replaced.
It works for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and PC, and costs $24.99 a year.
The launch heats up a music space that already supports streaming services like Spotify and Wimp, and could have more cloud-based participants from Google and Amazon shortly.
No news on any launches outside the US.

You've already had a peek at it in the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, but it seems that redesigned user interface is going to be hitting more than just the holiday's most-talked about duo. Netflix has made official a newly redesigned user interface experience for Android tablets -- one that "makes browsing and instantly watching unlimited TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix better than ever." The new look provides multiple rows of titles with larger artwork to scroll through, with Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix, noting that the company has seen a "threefold increase in how long Netflix members are watching on their tablets." As of today, interested consumers can simply update their Netflix app in the Android Market, while iPad users are being asked to wait "a few weeks," after which the new tablet experience will be dubbed Tabster and led on Twitter by a 17-year old methamphetamine addict.

It's apparently not a done deal just yet, but Bloomberg is reporting that AT&T is currently in negotiations to offer at least one Nokia Windows Phone sometime next year. That word comes straight from the head of AT&T's tablet unit, Glenn Lurie, who reportedly said that AT&T is now working on completing the details of the agreement -- no word on any specific phones, though. In other news, Lurie also said that "you are going to see prices come down" on tablets next year, although in that case he was unsurprisingly only referring to prices on a two-year contract (tablets from Acer and Samsung were specifically mentioned as ones that would be receiving discounts).

It looks like you can put any any fears of the short-lived Gmail iOS app going the way of the BlackBerry app to rest. Google has just announced that the app has returned to Apple's App Store, and it promises that the problematic bugs that plagued the original release have been fixed. The company also says that it has "received a lot of helpful feedback and feature requests" during the app's two-week absence, and further notes that it's "just getting started" with the iOS app and plans to rapidly add a number of new features including support for multiple accounts and improved notifications.

Ice Cream Sandwich's source code has just been unleashed, which means it's time for the folks over atCyanogenMod to saddle up the horses, and get to work. In a Twitter post published on Tuesday, the Mod squad confirmed that it has already begun working on CM9, though it won't be released for another two months. CM8, in case you were wondering, was likely pegged for Android 3.0, but with Google holding tight to its Honeycomb source code, CyanogenMod may just leapfrog it altogether and jump straight to Cloud Nine. We'll all know more, come January.

According to a developer on the XDA forums, TrevE, many Android, Nokia, and BlackBerry smartphones have software called Carrier IQ that allows your carrier full access into your handset, including keylogging, which apps have been run, URLs that have been loaded in the browser, etc."Since this was submitted, a few more details have come to light. The software was designed to give carriers useful feedback on aggregate usage patterns, but the software runs as root and the privacy implications are pretty severe.

Market analyst Gartner reports worldwide mobile sales have grown by 5.6 per cent for Q3 as a result of tech-hungry consumers adopting smartphones and tablets.
The firm claims this has seen over 440.5 million devices sold globally while 115 million smartphones were sold at a 42 per cent increase compared to Q3 2010.
However, smartphone sales slowed to just seven per cent between the second and third quarter of this year. In addition the devices only grew by one per cent to 26 per cent of all mobile phone sales in the same period, according to the report.
Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "Strong smartphone growth in China and Russia helped increase overall volumes in the quarter, but demand for smartphones stalled in advanced markets such as Western Europe and the US as many users waited for new flagship devices featuring new versions of the key operating systems."
Cozza continues to point out that Q3 slowdowns also occurred in Latin American, the Middle East and Africa as consumers choose to wait for the arrival of the holiday season and new models including the iPhone 4S.

New app to recommend games and deliver targeted ads
A new social games network co-built by PapayaMobile and Tapjoy is set to be offered to Android developers in December.
The joint venture combines the services both firms offer to mobile games developers. PapayaMobile’s social gaming network has over 35 million users, while Tapjoy has a robust in-game ad network.
The amalgamated Social Marketplace app for Android will present players with a list of games based on their popularity within the Papaya social network. It will also display more relevant adverts, based on data pooled by the application itself, which in theory will drive up ad space charges.
Access to the application will be available to developers by the end of the year.
Android developers using the tech will need to integrate both the Papaya Social SDK and Tapjoy’s Publisher SDK into their apps.

So, BBM and a native email client for the BlackBerry PlayBook would be nice, but what we have today is a step in a completely different direction. DOSBox, everyone's favorite open-source x86 emulator, has been successfully ported to RIM's QNX-based tablet, bringing with it MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 support. A command-line-based OS can certainly be tiring after spending so many years with a GUI, but those ancient games of yesteryear are timeless -- Wolfenstein 3D, anyone? If you happen to live north of the border, where the Playbook just got a massive price cut, a repurposed DOS tablet could be in your future for a mere $200 -- plus a few extra bucks for a Bluetooth keyboard, which naturally you'll need to navigate DOS. Jump past the break for a tease of the action.

Here at the "These Go To Eleven" event, Google announced that Android activations thus far have surpassed 200 million devices. That's over 550,000 activations per day, which is 50,000 more thanJune's figure, and 150,000 more than the 400,000 clocked in during May. Not quite as many as Cupertino's 250 million strong, but Mountain View's getting close.

Apple has seemingly conquered the hearts and minds of US consumers this Christmas ahead of the games industry.
A new survey by Nielsen found that 44 per cent of kids aged between six and 12 years old put an iPad at the top of their Christmas wish list. That was followed by iPod Touch (30 per cent) and iPhone (27 per cent).
Nintendo’s 3DS was the sixth most sought after device with 25 per cent but was also the highest placed games console. Interestingly, fewer kids wanted a PlayStation Move than a Nintendo Wii, though PS3 won a bigger share than Xbox 360.

What's the best way to celebrate a year (plus) since Age of Zombies' release on iOS? By buying another version of Age of Zombies on iOS! Halfbrick has just released Age of Zombies Anniversary, a remastered edition of Barry Steakfries' inaugural adventure.
The new version features redone HD graphics (for iPads and iPhone 4 or 4S, of course), iCloud support, and new "Wild West content" -- a new western-themed level, in which even the dinosaurs don cowboy hats. If you want to experience this new, youthful Age of Zombies, it's on the App Store right now for a limited-time price of 99 cents.

Capsized will crash onto iPad in early January 2012 for free -- a price that seems almost alien. The game will support this exotic price point with a "robust in-game currency system," so players can make purchases and upgrades to weapons, skills and other stats.
The free action and exploration title has also been revamped for the touch-based device, and will retain more than a dozen non-linear levels. It also has the story-based campaign, along with other modes found in the for-pay versions.
Capsized is also expected to explore Xbox Live Arcade in December (for $10), along with PSN, Android and Mac platforms sometime in the first quarter of next year.

Orcs Must Die developer Robot Entertainment recently revealed to us the identity of its next opus: A two-player competitive iOS board game titled Hero Academy. It's a tactics game in which players move heroes across a staging area in an attempt to destroy their competitor's home base crystal before theirs, in turn, gets smashed. If that sounds a little too intense for your usual iOS gaming tastes, don't fret -- the action all takes place asynchronously.
Check out the screens below for a first look at the downloadable title, and keep an eye out for the debut trailer in the coming days!

Archos' new Arnova 9 G2 tablet looks to be the very definition of a mixed bag. It's part of the company's budget-minded Arnova line, so it will likely be relatively inexpensive (there's still no official word on a price), and it packs some specs that range from decent to high-end, including a 1GHz ARM A8 processor and a 9.7-inch IPS display with a 1,024 x 768 resolution (the same as the iPad). But it also runs the smartphone-minded Android 2.3 OS on that decidedly tablet-sized display and, as with other inexpensive Android tablets, you'll have to make do without official access to the Android Market (Archos offers the Appslib application store instead). Still curious? Details on everything but a price and release date can be found at the source link below.

Of the 100 million registered ICQ accounts, we really must wonder how many of them remain active. Still, the vintage instant messaging platform remains quite viable in some regions, and we're happy to report that the software's new owner is treating both it, and Windows Phone, with the respect they deserve. That's right, the Mail.ru Group has announced the upcoming version of "I seek you" for Microsoft's mobile platform, and from what we can tell, things look mighty fine. Of course, whether we actually choose to install the software onto our Titans and Radars is another matter entirely. Maybe one day, when we're feeling wistful for the past...

Xperia Play, Schmaschmeria Play -- who needs it? Fructel's got an Android add-on that does away withSony Ericsson's slider niche. The folks over at Pocket Gamer recently got hands-on time with this category-quashing controller, dubbed Gametel, that connects to handsets using clamps and a rubberized grip, no matter your mobile manufacturer of choice. Unfortunately, there's no analogue pad here, so it's not quite on par with its PlayStation Certified competition, but it will hold hands over Bluetooth with any Googlefied phones running Froyo and up. The unreleased peripheral includes a 250mAh battery, letting you bash away with those sore thumbs for up to nine hours at a time, your phone's charge willing. There's no official word on just when you can expect this game pad to make its market debut, but if you're really eager, head on over to the source to sign up for launch notifications.

Taiwanese news site Digitimes says these four 'old-school' PC makers have recognised they can't compete with OEMs that combine a hardware build with a tightly integrated software offer – namely Apple, Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
These end-to-end devices don't just offer a more compelling proposition to users, they're also cheaper. Amazon is offering its Kindle Fire at $199 and Barnes & Noble's Nook Simple Touch is $99. They may even end up free one day.
The Guardian surmises that the four exiting OEMs may be waiting for a WinPho tablet option as this would prove more attractive to the vast Microsoft-addicted enterprise market.
Although it does point out that margins are tight in Microsoft world, with Hewlett-Packard making an average profit of just $40 on each $800 PC it sells.
And there's some serious catching up to do even in this space, with Good Technology revealing last month that 19 out of 20 enterprise tablets are iPads.

Swedes are the most playful users, downloading over five apps per month.
The US mobile market is the worldwide frontrunner when it comes to total Android app downloads but Europe takes the gold based on total app downloads per user, according to mobile analyst research2guidance.
The firm says Sweden is the leader with users downloading more than five apps per month, which doubles the average US user who downloads fewer than 2.5 apps each.
Other markets to beat the US for monthly app downloads include the UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal and South Korea.
The US may be down on the monthly scale but it's not out. Overall the market is responsible for over 50 per cent of total Android Market app downloads, which is equivalent to 3.5 billion installs, according to the report.
This leaves South Korea in second with nine per cent followed by the UK, Germany and France, while Russia, Japan and China are among the most inactive app downloaders.

43 per cent are jealous of other smartphone users.
Is the Apple halo slipping? Although the firm sold 4m units of the iPhone 4S in its opening weekend, there is evidence of some disenchantment with its devices.
Mobile phone comparison site www.GoodMobilePhones.co.uk claims 22 per cent of UK iPhone users wish they had chosen a different device.
The report says of those regretting the purchase, 73 per cent were male while 27 per cent were female.
Almost half of iPhone users at 43 per cent say they are jealous of users that own other smartphones, while 25 per cent as unhappy with the phone's battery life, according to the report.
Further results show 13 per cent were unsatisfied with the lack of buttons, eight per cent had difficulty using emails and five per cent were disappointed with its functionality.

Apple has removed Texas Hold'em - the only iOS game developed by Apple itself - from the App Store.
The game, released in late 2006 for non-iOS iPods, was significantly updated and given prominence on the App Store when it debuted in 2008, but has not been updated since September of that year.
Mac Rumors suggests that Apple's early interest in developing its own games stemmed from the fear that it would struggle to attract thirdparties to its system. That, of course, is no longer a cause for concern.

Android takes another step closer to iOS's arguably superior gaming offering, adopting cult low-fi sim Tiny Tower. Froyo is the minimum requirement for the game run, but given thevery dominant status of Android 2.0 and up, most won't find it an issue. This management sim lets you create a mix of businesses and attractions to draw Bitizens (the pixelated chaps you see above) to come live, work and play in your property. There looks to be some kind of smartphone game exchange going on, with this not-so-tiny timesink transfer following the recent appearance of Minecraft on iOS. Those willing to write off the rest of the weekend can download it now at the source below.

From 'smart' pens to a smarter Siri, Apple's always attempting to find new ways to improve the iPhone, and the company's latest patent application wants to keep its crack-prone glass blemish free. Aptly named a "shock mounting cover glass in consumer electronic devices," the invention claims a tunable shock mount sandwiched between the phone's glass and other hardware. There's also plans for a sensor that can distinguish a "drop event" from normal phone movements and an actuator to prepare the shock mount for impact. Given that it's only at the application stage, we won't be seeing bombproof iPhone displays any time soon, but here's hoping it'll become a product reality someday. Mostly so we can see just how much of a beating it can take.

Every third Thursday, the team at California based SignalSnowboards like to spice things up some and make something a little more outside the box. This time around the team decided on creating a fitting tribute to Steve Jobs -- a custom ride complete with built-in iPad -- and thus the iShred was born. By no means a cut-and-shut affair, the team take inspiration from the simple, yet creative, design principles that led to ideas like the iPad Smart Cover. A layer of ABS with a cut out for the screen sits atop an all aluminum base, sandwiching an Apple-esque illuminated Signal logo -- presumably so you know when your WiFi is on while heading off-piste. Power is cleverly supplied only when contact is provided by the presence of a rider. If you think this is all just for show, think again, as they final product gets taken out on the slopes and put through its paces, complete with a bit of aprčs-ski Facetime.

[Shazin] had some free time on his hands, so he settled in to do something he had been meaning to for a while – learn Android programming. He went an indirect route, and ended up using the Scripting Layer for Android (SL4A), which gave him a head start on the process. Sitting in between the Android API and scripting languages such as Python, SL4A allowed him the ability to apply something he was already familiar with to the Android environment.
He thought it would be cool to try building a door entry system which relied on voice commands to lock and unlock. Using the Google Voice API for Android and an Arduino, he built a small Python application that allows him to toggle a servo simply by talking into his phone.
The application on his phone communicates with an Arduino over WiFi, once Google Voice has decoded the command [Shazin] is giving. The Arduino controls a servo, which in theory could control the locking mechanism on a door.
After a bit of tweaking and some added security, his proof of concept could definitely come in handy.
Check out the short video below to see [Shazin’s] voice-controlled servo in action.

Windows Phone continues to shore up its app and game selection, hitting 40,000 apps in just over a year since its inception. Granted, there's still plenty of catching up to do before Microsoft's third way can go toe-to-toe with Android and iOS, but it's another (substantial) step in the right direction. According to All About Windows Phone, new content is now being added at the heady rate of around 165 apps per day, although it notes that a chunk of previously released apps are now non-existent, subtracting around 5,000 from the scores we have here. However, app devs have cranked it up a gear, adding around the same amount of new apps in only the last month -- presumably galvanized by Nokia's much-publicized WinPho debut and other Mango-powered delights arriving in stores. Will it crack the 50k mark by the end of the year? We're sure Mr. Ballmer won't be betting against it.

Those of you lucky enough to get your mitts on a Galaxy Nexus may have noticed something odd -- no flash in the champagne room Android Market. Turns out the latest edition of Adobe's multimedia plug-in isn't compatible with the newest version of Google's mobile OS. Don't panic just yet though, while the end is nigh for mobile Flash, it's still got one more release left in it and that will deliver ICS compatibility. Adobe told the folks over at Pocket-lint, "[it] will release one more version of the Flash Player for mobile browsing, which will provide support for Android 4.0." Or, if you're a glass half-empty type, ICS will be your last chance to browse the "full" web on Android. The final release of the mobile plug-in will also be accompanied by one last version of the Linux Porting Kit -- after that, you better hope HTML5 really hits its stride.

comScore's MobiLens study found that social media usage on mobile across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK is so rife that 23.5 per cent of all mobile users are at it.
Nearly half of this audience – 46.8 per cent – access social networking sites on a daily basis. Indeed, daily use is growing faster than mobile social networking as a whole as a whole (67 per cent v 44 per cent).
Interestingly, access via a browser a (31.3m) is greater than access from an app (24.2m).
Needless to say Facebook is the top dog here, with 39 million mobile users or 71 percent of the EU5 mobile social networking audience access it from a phone.
That's an increase of 54 per cent in the past year.

With analysts continuing to release stats and predictions for e-commerce this holiday season, a stream of retailers are exploring a number of routes to embrace mobile into its plans, according toReuters.
The adoption will see companies use smartphones as research devices to check product info, make price comparisons and make purchases.
Home furniture and appliance retailers Lowe's has launched a major attack by issuing 42,000 iPhones to its staff across more than 1,700 stores. This will reportedly allow staff to check product supplies both in-store and at neighbouring branches.
Gihad Jawhar, VP, Lowes.com, said: "The shopping experience is in the consumer's hands and you can't fight where they're going. Retailers can either hop on the bus or get left behind. We are choosing the first option."
The report says Best Buy has 63 "connected stores" where staff members are being encouraged to use company smartphones to support shoppers in their search for items.

[Pete] has an iPhone 4s and loves Siri, but he wishes she had some more baked-in capabilities. While the application is technically still in beta and will likely be updated in the near future, [Pete] wanted more functionality now.
Since Apple isn’t known for their open architecture, he had to get creative. Knowing how Siri’s commands are relayed to Apple thanks to the folks at Applidium, he put together a proxy server that allows him to intercept and work with the data.
The hack is pretty slick, and doesn’t even require a jailbreak. A bit of DNS and SSL trickery is used to direct Siri’s WiFi traffic through his server, which then relays the commands to Apple’s servers for processing. On the return trip, his server interprets the data, looking for custom commands he has defined.
In the video below, he gives a brief overview of the system, then spends some time showing how he can use Siri to control his WiFi enabled thermostat. While the process only works while Siri is connected to his home network via WiFi, it’s still pretty awesome.

Having decided that there still aren't enough platforms upon which to playFinal Fantasy, Square Enix recently launched its own marketplace on the Japanese Android app store. The splintered-off storefront allows users to purchase downloadable Square Enix titles like Chaos Ring, Crystal Defendersand the iOS remake of Final Fantasy. The store will be updated with each new mobile release from the publisher, like the upcoming Chrono Trigger re-release.
The store will go live in Japan for KDDI users on December 1, while subscribers of DoCoMo and other cell networks will have to wait an unspecified amount of time. Considering how ubiquitous these games already are, we can't imagine they'll be forced to wait too long.

Chances are, the battery on your iOS or Android device won't even last through one "round" of Desert Bus, but don't let that stop you from picking up Penn & Teller's infamous "verisimulator," which tasks players with driving a bus from Tuscon, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada ... in real time.
The game has made a name for itself over the last few years, largely in thanks to Loading Ready Run's annual Desert Bus for Hope event (going on now!), in which its members are forced to play in exchange for Child's Play donations. It's only appropriate then, that all proceeds from the iOS and Android versions of Desert Bus will also be heading to Desert Bus for Hope and, thus, Child's Play. You can grab it now from iTunes or the Android Market for a buck.

Epic has confirmed that Infinity Blade 2 will cost $6.99 when it lands on the iOS App Store on December 1.
That's considerably more than the typically throw-away price tags of typical iPhone games, but given this game's visual splendor and the quality of its predecessor, we'd say it'll be worth it.
According to developer Chair (Shadow Complex), the follow-up will "build upon the addictive gameplay and breathtaking visuals of the original game" and include dozens of areas in an "evolving world."
Chair says the new game will include "new fighting styles and weapon classes with deep role-playing elements."

Apple looks set to kick off iPad 3 production in January 2012, according to a DigiTimes report.
The publication, which covers the semiconductor, electronics and computer industries in Taiwan and China, claims to have been informed by industry sources that Samsung, LG and Sharp will have shipped millions of high-resolution flat panel units for next-generation iPads to Apple by the end of the year.Touch module makers TPK Holding and Wintek are also expected to begin shipping their products to Apple between now and December, suggesting the platform holder's contract manufacturer Foxconn will start assembling the new tablets in January.
DigiTimes also says Apple is testing samples of a new 7.85-inch iPad display delivered by AU Optronics and LG. The iPad 2 has a 9.7 inch display.
The site reported earlier this month that Apple plans to launch iPad 3 and iPhone 5 next year, as well as overhaul its iMac and MacBook Air lines.

Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray made his projection earlier this week, and also said that he believes Android Market has generated a miserly seven per cent of the amount Apple's App Store has grossed in its lifetime.
He also claims that about $330 million has been generated on the Android Market, and that only 1.3 per cent of the apps on it are paid.
Munster doesn't see Android making up too much ground in revenues despite the gains its making in overall usage.
He said: "While Google has closed the gap in terms of app dollars spent over the last year and we continue to believe Android will grow smartphone share faster than Apple, we believe Apple is likely to maintain 70 per cent+ share of mobile app dollars spent over the next three to four years."
The issue is clearly the tiny proportion of app downloads that are paid – something Google maybe isn't too fussed about given its commitment to the advertising model.

Security provider McAfee's Threats Report for Q3 2011 found almost 75 million samples of malware are in circulation, beating previous estimates of 70 million.
And they're encroaching into mobile now that open source platforms are dominating the market.
Thus, Android is the OS that's under the most threat with a 37 per cent growth of mobile malware in the third quarter of 2011, according to the report.
Vincent Weafer, senior VP of McAfee Labs, said: "This has been a very steady quarter in terms of threats, as both general and mobile malware are more prevalent than ever.
"So far this year, we’ve seen many interesting yet challenging trends that are affecting the threat landscape, including heightened levels of sophistication and high-profile hacktivist attacks."

Adobe will cease Flash support for the next major version of the Android operating system, the company has said.
Android 5.0, colloquially known as ‘Jelly Bean’, has no firm release date though is expected to be unveiled next year. There will be a final Flash update to Android 4.0 next month, Adobe said, but thereafter support will be reduced to a handful of possible bug fixes.
Adobe rocked the interactive entertainment industries earlier this month by announcing it will cease support for Flash on mobile browsers.
And in what appears to be an indication of further action, Adobe said “with the growth and continued improved browser support of HTML5, the role of Flash will change”.
“For the foreseeable future, Flash offers advantages in delivering premium video with content protection, as well as providing a high performance, feature-rich and graphically advanced gaming platform,” the company told Pocket Lint.

An anonymous reader writes"After many years I am finally considering entering the smartphone era. Within the mainstream, there seem to be four OS choices: Windows, Android, Blackberry, or iOS: Android comes out as clear winner to me. However, all of the choices in one way or another require sharing a lot of personal information in the Cloud run by their respective corporations. Let alone Blackberry's centralized mail servers; there is no way to have an Android smartphone working decently without sharing all of your contacts, calendar appointments, and other stuff with Google. While Android is less intrusive than iOS, the lack of privacy remains quite annoying no matter how comfortable it is to have your own calendar and contacts centralized. In 2011 is there any option, other than living in a cave, to keep one's own life private while enjoying the wonders of modern smartphone apps?"

Of all the enhancements to discover in Apple's iOS 5 upgrade, it seems that an unforeseen monster may have snuck its way into the release. We're now reading through a handful of user complaints about losing WiFi after taking the plunge, with most replies mentioning intermittent connectivity and / or a significant loss in signal strength. The issue remains unconfirmed by Apple, but it appears to span across a number of devices, including the iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, along with the iPad (and possibly, the iPod Touch). By troubleshooting, one user was able to resolve the problem by reverting to iOS 4.3, then cause it to manifest -- once again -- by upgrading to iOS 5. The recent iOS 5.0.1 update certainly hasn't fixed the matter, either. Could these reports be an unfortunate series of unrelated events, or is there something larger at play? Sound off about your experience with WiFi and iOS 5 in the comments below.

Forget DLNA, that pesky setup requires all of your electronic kit to match up with the same certification. If you want full HDMI-mirroring without the fuss, your go-to's going to be an innocuous little dongle from Dream Chip Technologies. The plain, white xBounds stick links up to your smartphone over WiFi using the outfit's xBeam encoder, transmitting mobile content via HDMI to an HDTV set or external monitor. Games and videos streamed to the big screen will also enjoy output in a higher resolution thanks to the company's xBounds ReMatch tech. But all of this ease of use comes at a price, as the RemoteGPU device is purported to cost €99 (about $134), with the full-on dev kit (which includes a Nexus S) ringing in at €998 (about $1,350). There's no word yet on an official release, so you'll just have to make due with the video after the break.

Singes consumer desire for the iPad to 49 per cent.
Digital researcher Parks Associates says in the Christmas tablet battle, Amazon's Kindle Fire and Apple's iPad 2 are almost neck and neck for product preference.
The report says of the 16 per cent of US broadband homes planning on a buying a tablet in the holiday period, 51 per cent would choose the Fire, which leaves the iPad sitting on 49 per cent.
It's likely device cost will play a key difference in making the choice between the two, as the Kindle Fire retails for $199 against the $499 iPad.
Results show those aged 45+ prefer the Fire compared to those with higher incomes and a higher education, which prefer the iPad.
Tricia Parks, CEO, Parks Associates, said: "Having already established itself as the leading brand in e-readers, Amazon's entrance into the adjacent tablet space will disrupt the market.

Country ships almost 24m units in Q3 and pushes the US into second place.
Market researcher Strategy Analytics claims the US shipped 23.3 million units in the three-month period but was beaten by China, which shipped an additional 600,000 devices.
Linda Sui, analyst, Strategy Analytics, said: "Smartphone shipments grew 58 per cent sequentially to reach a record 23.9 million units in China during Q3 2011.
"In contrast, smartphone shipments fell seven per cent sequentially to reach 23.3 million units in the United States. China has overtaken the United States for the first time to become the world's largest smartphone market by volume."
The firm claims this result is down to the Chinese market's low-cost Android models such as ZTE and Huawei, although it's Nokia that leads the market with 28 per cent.
Neil Mawston, executive director, Strategy Analytics, said: "The US remains the world's largest smartphone market by revenue, but China has overtaken the United States in terms of volume.

Big Fish offering OnLive-like service for $6.99 per month; iPad only
Apple has launched a new iPad games service where users don’t pay for individual games, but instead buy a subscription of a range of titles.
Washington developer Big Fish Games is providing an ‘all-you-can-eat’ service – where subscribers can access dozens of its titles – for $6.99 a month.
Users won’t be able to download the games as part of the service. Apple is allowing Big Fish to stream game data to the user in a manner similar to cloud gaming. The nature of the streaming means that Big Fish can shut off the service as soon as subscriptions end, whereas games would be far more difficult to remotely delete or block if already downloaded.
Yet the streaming means that the iPad will need to be persistently connected to Wi-Fi.
Paul Thelen, founder of Big Fish, told Bloomberg that “this is the first time that the technology has matched the business model”.

Weekly updates to the best selling iPhone and iPad games
Apple UK has today started publishing weekly charts detailing the most popular apps on its iOS platforms.
It is producing four weekly charts: iPhone paid apps, iPhone free apps, iPad paid apps and iPad free apps.
Each chart is a top ten, published every Wednesday - it names the app and its publisher (which can either be the original developer or its publisher, depending on who has the direct relationship with Apple).
Although the charts are for all apps, games feature heavily in each due to their popularity and cost on these platforms.
Apple is still publishing the up to the minute region and genre charts in iTunes.

As hinted at yesterday, ‘80s British games icon Dizzy is set to return.
His modern arrival comes in the form of an iOS remake of 1991 title Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk for iPhone and iPad, as well as for Google’s Android platform.
Furthermore, the release is nearly upon us – it will arrive on Friday December 9th.
“It always astounds us what a loyal fan base Dizzy still has,” Dizzy co-creator Philip Oliver stated. “Even after all these years people remember Dizzy fondly and it’s great to see him return for his older fans and introduce him to a new generation of gamers.”
Brother Andrew Oliver added: “Dizzy Prince of the Yolkfolk was one of the most popular Dizzy titles and it’s exciting to see him making his debut iOS and Android for the holidays.”
This new version is being developed by DNA Interactive, with original project director Paul Ranson saying: “20 years on and Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk remains one of the most memorable games in the series for its puzzles and humour and it’s an absolute pleasure to return to the director’s role for this HD edition.
“For once, this is a retro classic that doesn’t require rose-tinted glasses to appreciate its design and gameplay – Dizzy: Prince of the Yolk is simply a great puzzle-solving romp that’s been brought up-to-date with glorious visuals.”

Approves Big Fish Games service, realises what it's done, bans it.
According to Bloomberg, Big Fish would have been the first on iPad to offer users access to dozens of games for $4.99 to $6.99 a month.
The firm says it's baffled by the reversal.
“We were notified that the app was removed,” said Paul Thelen, founder of Big Fish. “We’re trying to follow up with Apple to try to figure out what happened.”
One can assume that Apple would have taken 30 per cent of any recurring revenue from the service – a strategy that has annoyed companies behind other subscription services.
If Big Fish was cool with this, you wonder what the problem was.

"Black Friday has touched off a three-way price war between Apple, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. Kobo readers dropped their price to just $99 to compete with the Nook, only to discover that Barnes and Noble was lowering the price on their touchscreen Nooks to $79, to compete with the new $79 Kindle from Amazon. And meanwhile, Apple has announced aggressive pricing on all Apple products for Black Friday, reportedly including$100 off on MacBook and iMac products, and a $61 discount on the iPad 2.

Apple has just launched its annual Black Friday online sale, and, as you may expect, there isn't a whole lot to write home about. The company has slashed the prices of its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac by a modest $100 for this year's 24-hour event, with the iPad 2 seeing a $41 reduction, and the iPod Touch getting slashed by a measly $21. Not exactly the kind of discounts you'd wait an entire year for, but they're there at the source link, nonetheless.

As many will be aware, most attempts to use a touchscreen with gloves on will fail and with 700 million touchscreen phones to ship in 2016, that's a lot of naked mitts in use.
Prior to the development of iPrints, costly special touchscreen compatible gloves were required but iPrints have been designed to prevent that problem and fill the market gap.
iPrints are adhesive strips that attach directly to the glove finger allowing the wearer to operate touchscreen devices as they would do without wearing gloves.
Phil Mundy, inventor of iPrints, said: "I used to find it really annoying when I wore gloves and had to keep taking them off to use my smartphone.
"I searched around for an answer to use a touchscreen without taking my gloves off, but only found expensive, touchscreen-friendly gloves. I wanted a cost-effective alternative that allowed me to use my smartphone while still wearing whichever gloves I wanted.”

Research firm GfK says Apple is leading the charge with customer loyalty ahead of rival phone makers as 84 per cent of iPhone users said they would choose iPhone again when they replace their current device.
Android is second with 60 per cent of consumers saying they would return to Google's OS, while just 48 per cent of RIM's BlackBerry customers would stay true and return.
That's no surprise given the inconsistent service RIM has given customers over the past couple of months. At the time of the October power outage, many customers took to social networks to voice their anger at the lack of communication from the firm.
The report says that on 63 per cent on average will stick with the phone they have, which means brands will have to work hard or fail miserably in order to command change in the market.
Ryan Garner, analyst at GfK, said: "Apple is clearly ahead of the game, but developments next year will challenge that."

A new report Pyramid Research says that by 2016, 90.8 per cent of all handsets sold in the UK will be smartphones.
It adds that this surge will increase mobile data service revenue to Ł7.7bn. That's a huge windfall for operators, but also a potential headache in terms of making enough network capacity available to keep customers happy.
The rise of the smartphone appears to be fuelling another spike in overall phone ownership. Pyramid reckons mobile penetration in the UK is expected to reach 152.8 per cent by 2016, which is around 98m subscriptions.
Olena Kaplan, Pyramid Research's associate analyst, said: "The growing demand for simultaneous data access by multiple devices, which will be met by 4G technology following the 4G licence auction in 2012, will result in mobile data service revenue reaching Ł7.7 billion by 2016."

ChuChu Rocket, one of the most frantic puzzle games around (and a genuine classic), is now available for Android. The game has players guiding their adorable mice (Chuchus), leading them away from evil cats (Kapukapus) and into handy escape rockets. Go ahead and read that last sentence again, we promise it's accurate.
You can grab the game now from Android Market for $0.99. Unfortunately, if you're looking for some games for your fancy new Kindle Fire, the game doesn't appear to be on Amazon's Android Appstore. Of course, it's still available for iOS (at $2.99), if that's your thing.

While Americans plow through their cash and cards, lapping up the litany of Black Friday specials -- and readying themselves for the inevitable Cyber Monday second wave -- it looks like our trans-Atlantic cousins will also get a taste of discount joy. After a brief 18-month stint, Best Buy UK is packing its bags, and it wants to travel light. Both the online and physical stores will see prices snipped by between 10 and 30 percent, though we don't know whether this will extend to Best Buy's full product line or simply less desirable devices. Either way, the brick-and-mortar stores have been closed over the weekend in preparation. Bargain-hunting Brits should be able to grab some some cut-price Christmas treats when the eleven stores reopen on Monday.

There seems to be a bit of confusion about Nokia Drive's future in the Windows Phone Marketplace. News of its impending arrival -- for a price -- was originally tweeted by a third-party and then re-tweetedby Nokia India. Sadly, we're told this was all just a mistake. We originally reached out to Espoo's finest to confirm the story, and well, we met a giant brick wall in the process. According to the company's media relations department, "Nokia Drive comes pre-installed on our Nokia Lumia range and there are currently no plans to make it available for Windows Phone based devices from other OEMs." It's a heartbreaker, indeed, but the crew at Navigon can certainly breathe a sigh of relief -- for the time being.

Want that 70″ LCD television in your living room to be an Android device? This little guy can make it happen. With an HDMI port on one end, and a USB plug on the other for power, just plug in FXI Technologies’ Cotton Candy dongle to create a 1080p Androidtelevision. The price isn’t set for the device, but it’s expected to be available at less than $200. Considering what’s inside that’s pretty reasonable. There’s a dual-core 1.2 GHz ARM processor, 1 gig of RAM, 64 gigs of storage, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a microSD card slot. Wow!So is it hackable? Absolutely. Well, kind of? The company doesn’t intend to bring Cotton Candy to the retail market. Instead, they will sell the device to developers who may do what they wish. From there, said developers have the option to license the technology for their own products. This begs the question, will the development kit come in under $200? Hard to say.Check out the video after the break to hear an interview with the company’s CEO. It certainly sounds fascinating, and like the Chumby NeTV, we can’t wait to see what comes of this. Sega has ported the first Sonic game on Game Boy Advance over to Android.
Sonic Advance has just released on the Android Market in Japan for 415 Yen (about Ł3.50/$5.30) in all its colourful glory.
GBA-owning Sonic fans will remember Sonic Adventure as a breath of fresh air during the early years of the mascot's seeming downturn since his crossover to 3D in 1999.
It was one of the first games since his 3D debut in which Sega revisited his old-school 2D mechanics and reminded us why we all loved him in the first place.
There's currently no word on an Android release outside of Japan, but we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for its arrival soon.

MAME4droid is a version of iMAME4all (iPhone, iPad) for Android, developed also by David Valdeita (Seleuco).
They emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.37b5 plus some additional games from newer MAME versions.
This version emulates over 2000 different romsets.
Please, try to understand that that with that amount of games, some will run better than others and some might not even run with iMAME4all. Please, don´t email me asking for a specific game to run.
Although the performance is very good with modern devices (all games I tested on iPad run practically perfect), owners of older devices should not expect a good performance; please turn off sound because that's very helpful.
After installing, place your MAME-titled zipped roms in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all/roms (iMAME4all) or /sdcard/ROMs/MAME4all/roms (MAME4droid) folder.
MAME4droid & iMAME4all uses only '0.37b5', 'GP2X, WIZ 0.37b11 mame romset'. Use "clrmame.dat" file included in '/var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all' or /sdcard '/ROMs/MAME4all/' to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in next webpage:
MAME4droid 1.4.1 added local multiplayer (using external IME app as Wiimote Controller or equivalent), added option to change default rom path, fixed thread being suspended when emulator paused.

iPhone 4S spike gives it 42.8 per cent of UK smartphone sales, against 35 per cent for Android.
Despite a lukewarm reception from the press, iPhone 4S was clearly a huge hit with consumers.
It caused a huge leap in sales for Apple in October and, according to market analyst Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, this boosted figures for the quarter too.
In the latest 12 weeks of sales in the UK, Apple's market share grow to 27 per cent.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director, said: "With nearly a year and a half between iPhone launches there has been huge pent up demand for a new Apple device.
"We have previously seen that Apple customers tend to be very loyal to the brand. However, it is still astonishing that 75 per cent of new iPhone 4S owners previously owned an iPhone."

Wherever you are, Little Fockers can be with you.
Sky always stresses that the purpose of Sky Go is to give existing subscribers wider access to the content they already pay for at no extra cost
The latest step is adding movies for those who access Sky Go on their iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. Android is promised for next year.
So, they will now be able to stream movies when they are on wi-fi, with 3G expected by the end of the year. That should make the operator data tariff managers gulp.
Previously, the mobile service had offered 'linear' movies only, with on-demand available to computer users.
The first tranche of films includes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Little Fockers, Black Swan, Gulliver's Travels and Limitless.

Siri can make appointments, tell you the weather, but now she can start your car as well!
After we showed you how Siri could be hacked to use a custom proxy and execute custom commands, we knew it wouldn’t be long before additional hacks would start rolling in. [Brandon Fiquett] thought it would be great if Siri could remotely control his car, so he built this functionality into Siri using [Pete’s] proxy software.
The hack relies on the Viper remote start system he had installed in his car, along with a few modules loaded into his proxy server. His proxy server tweaks allow Siri to interpret a preset list of commands such as “Vehicle Start” and “Vehicle Arm/Disarm”, relaying the commands to the Viper SmartStart module.
We imagine that the back-end functionality is not unlike the existing SmartStart iOS app, but it looks like [Brandon] beat Viper to the game since Siri has not been made available to 3rd party developers as of yet.
Check out the video below to see Siri in action, then be sure to swing by his web site for additional videos as well as the code that makes this possible.

On an airline that's actually serving the great country of Australia these days, an iPhone 4 decided enough was enough. Shortly after Regional Express flight ZL319 landed in Sydney from Lismore, "a passenger's mobile phone started emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow." What happened next is a bit of an Aussie mystery, but it seems at some point that the glow was "extinguished successfully." No one onboard was harmed, and the handset in question has been handed over to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau for "analysis." It suffered only mild reception issuesprior to its final collapse, and if faced with a similar situation, Siri reportedly stated that it would consult a therapist before discharging hot fury.

Finnish experts develop device that sits between the phone and the network.
This network proxy works as a passageway for smartphones to connect to the internet and handle most of the data transfer.
This, will in turn save up to 74 per cent of battery power consumption, according to Physorg.
Developing countries have been slow in adopting mobile internet due to the large energy requirements but the researchers behind the device look to change this.
Professor Jukka Manner from Aalto University, said: "This new solution is particularly valuable in developing countries because it provides significantly more effective Internet access to a much larger number of people.
"At the moment, only a small percent can access the Internet from a wired connection, but 90 per cent of the African population lives in areas with mobile phone network coverage. Mobile phone usage is increasing rapidly, however the use of mobile Internet services is hindered by users not having access to the power grid to recharge their phones."

It wasn't long ago that Samsung modified its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to get it back on the German market, and it didn't take long for Apple to respond. Apparently, Cupertino didn't take kindly to Sammy's sneaky workaround, and has filed for an injunction to stop the 10.1N from showing up on store shelves in Germany. The slate's fate will be determined on December 22nd, so we'll have to wait and see whether itjoins its siblings on the sidelines, or is around to deliver some Honeycomb delights to those in Deutschland come Christmas morn.

Sure, it's leaps and bounds away from all the parlor tricks that Siri is able to perform, but now, jailbroken iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch devices -- that have been upgraded to iOS 5 -- may access the dictation portion of Siri's prowess. Thanks to Siri0us, the free app available through Cydia, users will gain the option to speak messages and search queries rather than type them, which could be a huge time saver -- unless there's a series of mistakes, anyway. Rather than accessing Apple's own system, the app works by tapping into Nuance's Dragon Go servers for speech recognition. Rather subversive, don't you think? If you'd like to get in on the fun (before Nuance breaks up the party), just check the video following the break.
Update: Well, who didn't see this one coming? Nuance has pulled the rug out from under Siri0us, and the app has been yanked from Cydia while the developer searches for another speech recognition server. Happy hunting, dude.

Still tempted by the fruit of another? If you're looking Microsoft's way, but aren't quite ready to toss your adoration for iOS or Android aside, the coders in Redmond are giving you an alternative to quitting cold turkey. By visiting http://aka.ms/wpdemo on one's iOS or Android browser, you'll be immediately tunneled into a emulation of Windows Phone 7. We gave it a test run here at Engadget HQ, and it seems that every tile and swipe save for Apps runs properly. Can't say the fonts and such looked as smooth on our Galaxy S II as they do on the Radar, but it's a solid effort that'll definitely serve you well if you're considering the switch. Just don't try to flip the demo horizontally -- that's clearly a no-no.

Google's already put its stamp on the great outdoors, what with its Street View fleet chronicling the well-trodden ways of our world for Maps. Which is precisely why Mountain View's turning its attention inward for that next, great navigation innovation, as it attempts to chart a course through the wilds ofindoor spaces. Hitting the Android Market in the U.S. and Japan today, the company's ever-popular app gets a full version bump to 6.0, bringing with it the inclusion of retail and airport floor plans.
The newly added indoor maps don't quite offer the turn-by-turn navigation you've come to know and depend upon (that's outside-only for now), but the provided layouts should help usher you along to the nearest bathroom, clothing shop or elevator. There's no fancy equipment at use, either. All of your positioning information is culled from the same set of data (including GPS) used for "My Location,"although here it's been optimized to detect movement along the z-axis. What does that mean for you, dear end user? Try a nifty feature called "Automatic Floor Detection" that'll keep track of your progress as you move about from escalator to escalator. Google's also endeavoring to extend its indoor reach, opening up its mapping inventory with a self-service tool (currently in beta) that'll allow business owners to upload floor plans directly to Maps.
If you're itching to test the tech out, you'll want to find yourself at one of the dozen-plus airport partners scattered across the country, in addition to transit hubs and major retail outlets both stateside and in Japan. Familiar commercial forces like Macy's and Takashimaya have opted-in to the indoor location service, but your best bet's going to be IKEA -- which has agreed to roll the feature out to all of its stores nationwide. So, whether you're rocking Android 2.1 or the forward-facing 4.0, prepare to let your Googlefied smartphone almost always be your guide. Follow past the break for additional shots and a video demo of the indoor geo-location in action.

Anyone else feel like that pig-slaying pack of temperamental birdies has finally jumped the shark? Yeah, us too. Which makes World of Goo's official bow on Android especially timely. Gaming addicts have long had the option to build with blobs of these living globs on Mac, PC, Wii, and iOS, but now the architecturally-focused fun is ready to make nice with Google's legion of mobile mitts. You can snag the puzzler on the Android market now, so long as your handset's sporting FroYo and up. Unfortunately, this good time pastime doesn't come gratis, so you'll have to fork over three dolla dolla bills, y'all. Of course, you can always get your digits dirty (and prime that budding addiction) with a demo and live in the über-frugal land of forever level one.

Oh no, it isn't just about the 5-inch tabletphone today. Announced at the same event in Beijing just now are a couple of larger tablets from Lenovo: the LePad S2007 and the LePad S2010. Interestingly, the latter 10.1-inch device isn't quite the same as what we saw in our exclusive scoop from two weeks ago: it's 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core rather than 1.6GHz NVIDIA quad-core, 1GB RAM instead of 2GB, no funky fingerprint scanner on the back, and it's launching with Android 3.2 instead of Ice Cream Sandwich. But fret not, as we've been informed that its international counterpart -- aka the IdeaTab K2 in our scoop -- will launch with the latest Android OS; so we're just waiting for a release date.
Both of these Honeycomb tablets share many similarities: Qualcomm's dual-core 1.5GHz chip, 1GB RAM, 1,280 x 800 IPS display (pretty nice on a 7-inch form factor, with 216ppi density), eight megapixel main camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, dual-mode 3G (China Telecom's EV-DO plus China Unicom's WCDMA) for data plus voice calls, and plans to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich in the future. Aside from the obvious physical differences, these tablets also come with different battery capacities: the 360g-heavy, 9.7mm-thick S2007 comes with 3,780mAh that can last up to eight hours on WiFi; whereas the 670g-heavy (almost the same as the original WiFi iPad, uh-oh), 9.9mm-thick S2010 has a generous 7,560mAh that can push it to 11 hours. Like the S2005 tabletphone, both tablets will be available in China next month; so for now, stay tuned for some hands-on photos from our folks over at Engadget Chinese.
Update: It turns out that there was a slight misunderstanding regarding the voice call feature -- the Chinese press release meant using Skype-like software to enable this. Pah.

Providing it can elude the somewhat over-active reach of Bethesda’s lawyers, a Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim app is heading to iOS.
Called Dragon Shout, the download contains a fully interactive Skyrim map that allows gamers to set their own markers, complete with annotations. This can be used for marking down the location of key artefacts such as dragon bones or loot if your inventory is currently full.
Crucially this functionality isn’t offered in the full Skyrim game.
Later updates to the app will also add some social networking features, TouchArcade reports.
The app is currently undergoing Apple’s submissions process and could be out within a matter of days.

Presumably launched to snatch users from rivals.
Microsoft's partnership with Nokia has seen the birth of a new line in Windows Phones, which both companies hope will succeed in the crowded smartphone market.
In a bid to attract new customers, Microsoft has developed a mobile browser-based emulator for the WinPho OS, which is available for use on Apple and Android devices.
The aim behind the new platform – with its tiles, big typeface and horizontal scrolling – is to showcase the OS to smartphone users demonstrating its capabilities.
It's likely the secondary aim is to reel in customers from rival operating systems to strengthen its ranks in the battle for domination.
Microsoft will have the most difficulty persuading Apple lovers to climb aboard of course as we recently reported that iPhone owners are the most loyal.

Extreme discounts on the App Store by large publishers are prompting smaller companies to move to freemium models rather than compete with cheap paid apps and their huge marketing budgets.
Last Christmas Electronic Arts dropped prices for a majority of its branded games on iOS platforms, flooding the top slots in the charts and saturated marketing channels on the App Store.
The practice was criticised by rival publisher Gameloft, but companies like Canadian publisher Fuse Powered saw it as an opportunity to change its entire approach to the mobile games business.
"That's one of the things that motivated us to transition our business model," said CEO Jon Walsh in an interview published today. "That idea that a big publisher can drop prices, take a hit and fill up all those top slots."
"That said two things: paid games are always going to have that risk. The big publisher is basically selling at an extremely low cost to gain market share and if it works for them they are going to continue to do it. So we can either complain about it or make sure our business model works around it. That's where the freemium model works for us."
For Fuse Powered, which has so far published titles such as Dawn of the Dead and Jaws Revenge, the company hopes to build a dedicated network of players by releasing multiple titles on a regular basis. It can then cross-promote its games within its own network. With six titles planned for the next three months, the company hopes to have 24 games out by the end of 2012.
"It also said to us that we need to go towards a publishing model where we have a base of really avid players that are enjoying our games so that when we bring out more stuff we don't need to get into those top 25 positions in the App Store, we can deliver directly to the existing player base," offered Walsh.
"That will be a continued risk for people selling 99 cent games."

Token_Internet_Girl writes with a followup to last week's news about Android developer Trevor Eckhart, who was researching software from CarrierIQ, installed on millions of cellphones, that secretly logged a variety of user information — from button presses to text message contents to browsing data. CarrierIQ tried to silence Eckhart, but later backtracked. Now, Eckhart has posted a video demonstration of CarrierIQ's logging software. From the article:"The company denies its software logs keystrokes. Eckhart’s 17-minute video clearly undercuts that claim. ... The video shows the software logging Eckhart's online search of 'hello world.' That's despite Eckhart using the HTTPS version of Google, which is supposed to hide searches from those who would want to spy by intercepting the traffic between a user and Google. ...the video shows the software logging each number as Eckhart fingers the dialer. 'Every button you press in the dialer before you call,' he says on the video, 'it already gets sent off to the IQ application.'"

Activision has announced a sequel to its first attempt at Zombies on iOS, available on December 1 for $6.99: Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies. That's, uh, tomorrow.
Black Ops Zombies aims to offer the same features and gameplay elements found in the Zombies mode on consoles. It'll be available as a universal app for both the iPad and iPhone, optimized for third generation devices, and launches with the Kino der Toten map and the unlockable Dead Ops Arcade mini-game found in the console installment. There is also multiplayer support for up to four players and full voice chat.
