Google didn't just unveil a redesigned logo -- it also gave Android's Google Now a welcome refresh. Grab the updated Google app for Android and you'll see that the once colorful info cards are both subtler and organized into clearly market categories, such as upcoming events, updates (think weather) and news stories. It's considerably easier to manage if you regularly receive a flood of data. You have more options for customizing Google Now when you dismiss cards, too. If you haven't already, swing by Google Play for the upgrade -- it'll take some getting used to (those colorful Google logos aren't exactly subtle), but it's worthwhile.

Acer's at IFA in force this year, showing off a wide array of gaming PCs, laptops, tablets and now, a phone. The Predator 6 looks a lot like the company's new gaming tablet, with some super-gnarly black-and-red styling and four front-facing speakers. Details are thin on the ground at the moment, but inside is an unspecified (but probably this) MediaTek deca-core processor with 4GB of RAM and dual haptic feedback motors for rumbles. It has a 6-inch HD display; it runs Android; and around the back there's a 21-megapixel camera. We don't have pricing or a release date on this just yet, but rest assured we'll keep on poking Acer until someone gives us more info.

If you've been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the community-focused CyanogenMod firmware to both make the leap to Android 5.1 and fix that nasty Stagefright MMS exploit, you can relax. Hot on the heels of Cyanogen OS 12.1 (for devices like the OnePlus One), CyanogenMod 12.1 is arriving with both the perks from Android 5.1.1 as well as a Stagefright patch thattheoretically keeps you safe. There are also Stagefright fixes for CyanogenMod 11 and 12.0, in case you can't run the new operating system right away. There are a lot of devices to cover with this rollout, so don't be alarmed if you don't see a download right away -- if your phone or tablet is already running CyanogenMod's decidedly non-standard code, there's probably an update waiting in the wings.

Jailbreaking an iPhone gives you the freedom to run the apps and interfaces you want (rather than those allowed by Apple), but it also carries some inherent risks -- you're giving apps much more control over your phone. And unfortunately, some of these users are discovering this the hard way. Researchers have discovered a strain of iOS malware, nicknamed KeyRaider, that has stolen over 225,000 Apple IDs from jailbroken devices. The software takes advantage of Chinese app repositories that let people directly upload and share their own titles. If you happen to download the code, it'll either scoop up your Apple account data (to give rogue users "free" apps) or hold your phone for ransom.

The rumors are true: Google has officially announced that Android Wear is coming to the iPhone. But there are a few caveats. For one thing, only the latest iPhones -- those that are running iOS 8.2 and up -- are supported (that includes the iPhone 5 onwards). More importantly, this app only works with the very latest in Android Wear watches. Right now, the only watch that works with this is the new LG Watch Urbane, which is the most recent Android Wear watch to launch. We're told that the app will also work with all future Wear devices, including upcoming watches from ASUS, Motorola and Huawei.

Not for the first time Apple is said to be ready to position the next iteration of Apple TV as a living room games device.
It’s always seemed like the logical next step for the hardware, but minor revisions to the hardware have been and gone without any meaningful attempt from the company to make a grab for a share of console revenues.
Now 9to5Mac reports that “sources with knowledge of the product” say the 4th generation Apple TV will not only enjoy a games-centric hardware boost but also boast compatibility with a range of Bluetooth gaming equipment, most notably controllers.
Furthermore, it reckons the announcement will be made alongside the unveiling of the next iPhone on September 9th.
As for the specifics, Apple TV will of course have access to Apple’s vast digital games store. Games that are compatible will be playable with either the bundled remote control – which is said to include both physical buttons and a touchpad, as well as motion sensors – or via more traditional Bluetooth controllers, the site says.
The new Apple TV, which will also boast an iOS 9 inspired UI, is tipped for release in October for between $149 and $199.

Skype users have ridden a rollercoaster of different designs over the years, and the latest version promises yet more change. Version 6.0 has been completely redesigned for both iOS and Android apps, which are now in lockstep with each other. For Google's ecosystem, the new layout took a page from the Android 5 "Material" playbook with circular icons and other touches. Other features include a floating action button to start new calls or chats (ŕ la Facebook's Messenger), enhanced search and improved messaging. There are also custom ringtones, photo sharing and web link reviews to bring the app in line with rival messaging products like Google's Hangouts.

The Pokemon Company and Nintendo's free-to-play puzzle game Pokemon Shuffle is out now for iOS and Android devices.
Nintendo had made good on its promise to bring the game to mobile devices prior to the end of the year, with the title available to download on the App Store and Google Play.
Pokemon Shuffle debuted on Nintendo 3DS earlier this year through the eShop, garnering 2.5m downloads in just over a month. As one might expect with a free-to-play release, Shuffle contains microtransactions once players reach a certain stage in the game.

A few months ago Google made changes to its YouTube app and pulled it from old second-generation Apple TV boxes (as well as some other older smart TVs). Now, if you're longing for the heady days of 2007 and aren't ready to upgrade (probably a good idea, with new hardware right around the corner), there is a way to get it back. Firecore has added a YouTube plugin to its aTV Flash (black) software for jailbroken Apple TVs. If you own a third generationApple TV (on sale since early 2012, supports 1080p), then this doesn't apply to you, since you still have YouTube. But if your ATV2 is still in use, this will get it back... for a fee of $30. With Apple's big event just a few days away and a new$150 Apple TV rumored to be on the way we can see why this isn't the time to buy an upgraded model. You could buy a Chromecast plus whatever is announced on the 9th and do just as well -- or use AirPlay, if you also have iOS or Mac hardware. If you prefer the DIY route and want native YouTube playback, though, you can follow the instructions here.

Almost a year ago, Apple put a Retina display inside its 27-inch desktop. A report from 9to5Mac says we could see a high-res panel on the smaller 21.5-inch model soon as well. The word comes from Mark Gurman, who has a solid track record for news like this, of the new iMac initially tipped by clues inside the upcoming OS X El Capitan. Despite the larger all-in-one getting a 5K Retina panel last fall, the report claims that the 21.5-inch version will come equipped with a 4K display and resolution of 4,096 x 2,304 (up from the current 1,920 x 1,080). While Apple has an iPhone-focused event scheduled for next week, Gurman says the new iMac won't be announced until next month. If you're not too thrilled about paying a premium for a higher-resolution display, chances are the current model will remain available. Even after the 27-inch Retina model arrived, the 1440p option stuck around.

Apple's big iPad Pro came with a big surprise -- an optional stylus. It's easy to dismiss the accessory -- named Apple Pencil -- as a reaction to Microsoft's Surface and Samsung's Galaxy Note series. Whatever the motive, though, the Pencil pushes the iPad and iOS in a new direction, away from regular consumers and toward Apple's bread and butter: designers and creatives. We spoke with over a dozen professional artists, illustrators and designers to gauge the reaction to the accessory. Many use styli in their everyday workflows through options including dedicated Wacom graphic tablets, all-in-one solutions like the Surface series or capacitive options like FiftyThree's Pencil for iPad -- and they've got a lot to say about Apple's entry into the market.

Apple's latest desktop OS upgrade, dubbed "El Capitan," is scheduled to launch on September 30th, Apple announced today. El Capitan is like an update within an update: It's named after a landmark inside of Yosemite (the name of the previous OS version) and it features a series of minor, yet useful, tweaks. El Capitan offers a new split-screen view, changes to email and app management, drag-and-drop options for Notes, and updates to Safari and Maps, among other improvements. We got our hands on the developer build back in June and concluded it was a nice upgrade, if not revolutionary: "There simply is no killer feature this time around. But as minor as some of them may seem, they're all at the very least nice to have, and in many cases genuinely useful."

If there's one company that has experience building iPad keyboards, it's Logitech. The accessory maker has made countless typing tools for Apple's tablets, so unsurprisingly, it's also working on one for the iPad Pro. It's called the Create Keyboard Case and, like Apple's own Smart Keyboard, connects through the new three-pronged Smart Connector. That means there's no need to pair or charge the attachment, because it draws all of its power and data directly from the tablet. Logitech says it was developed closely with Apple -- the first teaser image (above) hints at a full QWERTY layout and an exterior covered in a "tightly-woven premium fabric." Why choose the Create over the Smart Keyboard? For one, the Create has plastic keys -- rather than the fabric covered set found on Apple's offering -- and if you've seen the Smart Keyboard folded up, well, it doesn't look all that attractive. Logitech says it'll be available in the US and select parts of Europe and Asia when the iPad Pro goes on sale in November -- there's no word on pricing just yet, however.

Microsoft's giving its Office apps for Apple's devices a huge boost, enabling it to take better advantage of iOS 9's, WatchOS 2's and the iPad Pro's new features and capabilities. To start with, the company's making it easier to multitask on the iPad -- especially on the upcoming supersized Pro tablet -- once the latest iOS version drops. You can slide over to a second screen to access another app, use two Office apps at the same time side-by-side and even edit a Word, an Excel or a PowerPoint file attached to an email while it's open on Outlook via split screen.

Last year's Apple TVs were a lot of things. Streaming boxes. Keynote-watching tools. Must-haves for Airbnb hosts. Most importantly, though, they were Trojan horses for Apple's content, means for Cupertino to worm its way into the heart of your living room. While the Apple TVs of the past were more or less content to take on the Rokus of the world, today's newer, faster, more capable model is gearing up to battle your Xbox. And you know what? It's got a pretty good shot.

Apple may have finally embraced larger phones last year, but this year's announcement of the 6s Plus doesn't mean we're going to see a 6-inch iPhone any time soon. We're still looking at the same 5.5-inch screen size, though with faster internals and some snazzy new features like 3D Touch. But, with larger displays becoming the norm, users now have to think about more than just the screen size. We've matched up the iPhone 6s Plus against some leading handsets to make it easier to decide which big-screen phone has what it takes to be your next device.

Today at its annual iPhone press event, Apple didn't just unveil two new handsets, but also a refreshed Apple TV and the long-rumored iPad Pro. As the name would suggest (and as leaks already told us), this is a supersized tablet meant, with a 12.9-inch screen, an optional pen (excuse me: Pencil) and a click-in keyboard. Though the pen and some forthcoming Adobe apps underscore how this might be useful for creative pros, the split-screen view and added processing power might also make it a good fit for other kinds of workers, running the gamut from spreadsheet monkeys to engineers to people in medical fields. I had a chance today to play with the new Pro and its accessories for a few minutes, and while it's too soon to tell how this stacks up next to, say, the Microsoft Surface Pro or even a similarly priced touchscreen laptop, it's definitely not too early to share some first impressions.

Apple announced an alternative to paying your carrier for new iPhones at its press event today. Dubbed the iPhone Upgrade Program, the new system will allow customers to get a new phone every year while upgrading to the new flagship device annually. The 24-month installment plan starts at about $32 a month for the 16GB iPhone 6s. As the Apple website explains, "After 12 installments, you can get a new iPhone and start a new iPhone Upgrade Program. No more waiting for your carrier contract to end. Just trade in your current iPhone for a new one, and your new program begins." This is similar to installment plans offered by the major carriers, albeit for an unlocked device that also includes Apple Care. The program launches at 12:01 AM on September 12th alongside the 6s pre-orders.

An official announcement of new iPhones usually means a release date for the latest version of Cupertino's mobile operating system as well. Today was no different as Apple announced that iOS 9 would be available as a free download September 16th. When it arrives next week, you'll be privy to new features likea new and improved Siri, system-level security settings and split-screen multitasking on the iPad (hello, iPad Pro). Native apps like Maps (now with transit info), Notes and others have also been refreshed, so if you haven't been adventurous enough to test-drive the public beta, there will be a load of new stuff for you to try. And there's that brand-new News app too, serving up personalized content to your devices for reading on the go.

Apple has completely overhauled the camera on the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, giving it much higher resolution and 4K video. The new iSight camera now has a 12-megapixel sensor, 50 percent more than the iPhone 6's shooter. The new iPhones will also be Apple's first to go beyond 1080p video with Ultra HD 4K. Apple hasn't touched the pixel count on its last three iPhone models, which stayed at eight megapixels, despite other improvements. However, it clearly felt the need to counter rivals like Samsung's Galaxy S6, which has an excellent 16-megapixel camera.

Last year, Apple bet big with the launch of the iPhone 6 Plus, finally giving Apple fans the phablet they never knew they wanted. While its size might not be everyone's cup of tea, it seems that Apple hasn't tired of the large screen, because it's decided to do another one: Say hello to the iPhone 6s Plus. Like with the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus will also come in a new rose gold aluminum finish, plus the usual gold, silver and space gray. The display is purportedly made out of a stronger kind of glass and it has the same 5.5-inch size as it had before. But the most interesting feature here is a new kind of technology called 3D Touch, which adds pressure-sensitive Force Touch to the phone's display.

Apple's iPad line has typically been the star of its own October event in years past, but the company is changing things up and including iPad updates in its big iPhone event today. The big news is the new iPad Pro, but Apple is also releasing the new iPad mini 4, the first substantial update to Apple's smaller iPad in almost two years. As the rumors predicted, Apple's 7.9-inch tablet has had its internals updated to be a near match for last year's iPad Air 2. That means Apple's A8 processor is on board, a substantial upgrade from the A7 the iPad mini has sported for the last two years. That extra processing power is particularly important, because it means the iPad mini should be able to run all of iOS 9's fancy new multitasking features.

The new Apple TV is here, just unveiled at today's big event. Speculation about Apple's plans for the living room has circled for years, and this represents its most powerful assault on the space so far. A hardware refresh in 2012 added 1080p support, but not much else, so we're more than due for an upgrade, and exec Eddy Cue appropriately called today "a big day for the big screen." Tim Cook called it "the future of television," promising a new tvOS, App Store and showing off features including deep Siri integration with a new remote.
That Siri Remote has a touchpad, mic and Wii-like motion controls built in, necessary for Siri to search across "multiple content options" (iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, with more to come) on a single screen. Universal search is a feature already offered by competitors like Roku, Samsung, Amazon and Xbox that makes it easy to find a show or movie without having to know which service or app it's in first, and now it's on Apple TV too. There will be two versions of the new Apple TV: a 32GB model for $149, and 64GB model for $199, shipping in October to over 80 countries.

New iOS devices usually mean new processors, and sure enough, Apple hastaken the wraps off of some fresh silicon. The A9X in the iPad Pro is a doozy, packing up to 80 percent better performance than the A8X from the iPad Air 2. It's a champ beyond raw computational power, too, with twice the graphics and storage performance as well as double the memory bandwidth. Supposedly, the A9X is more powerful than 80 percent of portable PCs released in the past year -- that's a bold claim that we'll want to verify for ourselves, but it's certainly promising.

If you own an Android device, find four similarly outfitted friends and line up, shoulder-to-shoulder. Look to your left. Look to your right. Chances are, one of you has Lollipop, the latest Android mobile operating system. Twenty-one percent of Android devices use Lollipop, according to the company's own breakdown. This figure is up significantly from May, when Android reportedjust nine percent of its devices used the new OS. The largest share of the Android OS pie goes to Kit Kat, with 39 percent, followed by Jelly Bean with 32 percent. http://www.engadget.com/2015/09/08/a...rcent-install/

With more than 400 million desktop installations in its pocket, it was only a matter of time until Adblock Plus became available on mobile devices. Eyeo, the company behind the extension, first tested the water back in 2013, but when Google pulled the app, it decided that incorporating its filters intoAdblock Browser was the best way to go. After months of testing, the app has finally launched on iOS and Android devices, promising to let users "browse fast, safe and free of annoying ads" on their smartphone or tablet.

Nokia swears up and down that it's not returning to smartphones, but don't tell that to CNMO. It claims to have leaked images of the C1, Nokia's first-ever Android smartphone and its first phone of any kind since Microsoft bought its original phone business. From all indications, it's a tiny version of the N1 tablet's design -- this is the same minimalist look, just translated to a 5-inch, 1080p display. Accordingly, you'd find budget-class hardware under the hood. The C1 supposedly packs an Atom chip and 2GB of RAM, and its only standout feature so far is its use of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As it stands, you'll have to wait a while to try this device (if it's indeed real). Nokia's agreement with Microsoft prevents it from competing in the phone space until 2016, so this is more of a sneak peek at the company's future than a preview of an imminent product.

The gaming credentials of the new Apple TV appear to be somewhat less potent than rumours had led us to believe.
In the run-up to last night’s reveal the new device had been rumoured to represent Apple’s long-expected foray into the world of living room gaming. However, it has transpired that apps for the device have for some reason been limited to a maximum size of 200MB.
This seems absurdly restrictive, locking out a number of titles from the platform including the likes of Hearthstone (868MB), Her Story (1.7GB), Infinity Blade III (1.93GB), Don’t Starve (288MB), Fallout Shelter (205MB), DoDonPachi Resurrection HD (425MB) and many, many more.
In addition, Apple TV doesn’t offer any local storage for apps, meaning all titles must access data from Apple’s iCloud. In theory apps larger than 200MB are permitted, but any files over the allocation will need to be accessed remotely each time.
It’s not like the Apple TV’s default memory size is particularly restrictive, either, with both the 32GB and 64GB SKUs offering quite a bit in terms of storage space.
That’s not to say that there haven’t been any concessions towards the games market with the new machine, however. As was correctly predicted, a touch and motion controller will be included in the box, and compatibility with Bluetooth game controllers is also included.

You can use Microsoft's Cortana voice assistant on Android right now, but it's not really integrated with Android. There's only so much the developers can do when they don't control the operating system. If Cyanogen has its way, though, you'll soon see what Cortana can do when the gloves are off. The company hasrevealed that it's working with Microsoft to integrate Cortana into Cyanogen's custom version of Android, kicking Google's own voice control to the curb. It's not clear exactly how this will compare to the assistant on other platforms, but Cyanogen hints that it could offer better control over third-party apps than rivals like Google or Apple's Siri. You could tell Spotify to play specific songs or playlists, for instance. The software should show up in the "next version" ofCyanogen OS, so you won't have to wait long to find out how well this tie-in works.

If you live in the UK and want to play with an Apple Watch, you have two options at the moment: Walk into an Apple Store, or find someone that already owns one. For many, the latter isn't an option, and the former can be an unpleasant experience after a couple of new iPhones have gone on sale. Luckily, you'll soon have an alternative in the form of John Lewis. A "curated selection" will be available in 37 of its 44 department stores from September 18th -- a further four shops will be added before the end of the year, the company claims. Apple offers a wide variety of Watch combinations, so while the limited choice might sound a little disappointing, it's also not surprising. John Lewis will presumably focus on the more popular configurations -- so if you want something unusual, you'll still need to order online or walk into an Apple Store. Currys and PC World will also be offering the smartwatch soon, but there's an advantage to shopping with John Lewis -- the company will give you a two-year guarantee, which is double Apple's standard UK warranty.

It's that magical time of year where adults sit awake at their computers in the middle of the night (or with an iDevice and the Apple Store app open) in an effort to snag the latest iPhones. Pre-orders have gone live for Cupertino's latest handsets, the 6s and 6s Plus, and if you're hoping to get one for that first-wave September 25th availability date you'd better act fast. After all, 3D Touch isn't going to wait around for everyone. So! Best to head over to Apple's website or the aforementioned mobile app and get to punching in your credit card info. The questions now are big or small; space grey, gold or rose gold and if you're going to go for Apple's Upgrade Program or not. Better make your mind up rather quick-like -- Fallout fans, at least, have one less decision to make.

Graphics expert Nvidia has via an (extremely polite yet also quite cutting) blog post questioned the gaming appeal of the new Apple TV box.
“If you’re already an Apple TV user, we don’t necessarily expect you to run out and buy the new Apple TV,” it said. “While many of the features are impressive, the basic offerings may not justify the $200 price-tag over what you already own.
“There’s a more important question however. Do you really want to be locked into that walled garden?
“Deciding between Shield and the new Apple TV can be boiled down to one key question: Are you already deeply invested in one ecosystem over the other? If you already own an iPhone, Macbook, and an iPad you’re, probably a committed iOS user. But Android TV is inclusive and to that end, Shield also supports streaming from your current iOS devices.
“But what if your technological tendencies are less about adhering to one ecosystem over the other? Instead, you find yourself leaning toward the most powerful, capable, and flexible device available at the time? In that case you’ll definitely want to consider Shield.”
Nvidia even made an infographic and everything. Although it doesn’t mention Shield’s recent fire hazard recall scare.
It will be interesting to see how sales of the Nvidia Shield and Apple TV compare.

Sony seems determined on confusing its customers by giving very conflicting advice about its Xperia smartphones. If you're familiar with the range, you'll no doubt be aware of the advertising material that appears to show users taking photos in the rain and even (seemingly) underwater at the pool. Take a look at the picture above and you'd probably assume that a) it depicts someone shooting a video or taking a photo in a swimming pool, and b) you can do the same with your phone. But you'd be wrong (at least on b) because Sony has changed its mind about what waterproof means. Or it doesn't know. It really depends on where you look on the Sony website.

The Apple TV took center stage at the company's recent press event. It's getting its own operating system, better support for watching movies and listening to music, and full integration with Siri. All to be expected. But Apple is also pushing for the device to become a hub connecting mobile gaming with your TV. This article questions whether Apple has the chops to become a serious contender in living room gaming. Quoting: "[T]he subtext was clear: Apple thinks it can take on Nintendo for third place in the console market. The problem is, even while it's parading game developers on stage, it's still not clear if Apple actually wants to take on the console market. The inconsistency within the company when it comes to games is painful to see, and shows no sign of abating any time soon. ... The iPhone is the largest games store on the planet, and it's managed by a company whose attitude to the medium is 'go write a book.' That hasn't stopped magnificent art being made for Apple's platforms, but it has stopped some, such as Sweatshop HD, which was pulled from the app store in 2013."

As promised, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system is now available for download. iOS 9 is yours for the taking, and with it comes an improved Siri, split-screen multitasking on the iPad, those newfangled Live Photos, transit info in Maps, News app and more. All of which will be welcome additions for folks who who didn't get an early peek during the public beta. If the update hasn't already hit your device, you can take a gander at our initial impressions while you wait.

Apple's iOS devices have long included apps that you're unlikely to use (do youreally need a stock tracker?), and that list only seems to be getting longer. That's potentially a big problem, especially when the company is still shipping16GB flagship iPhones where every megabyte counts. However, there might be some relief in sight. In a chat with BuzzFeed News, CEO Tim Cook says that his company will eventually "figure out a way" for you to remove some of those apps. You won't get to yank all of them (that "might cause issues" with some device features, Cook says), but this could spare you from creating a folder for the bundled apps that would otherwise gather virtual dust.

Plex isn't the only one bringing a fan-favorite media app to the new Apple TV. Jean-Baptiste Kempf has quietly revealed that VLC, VideoLAN's signature media player, will reach Apple's latest set-top box. It's still early, but this could open up your playback options for music and video -- you may have more choices for formats and sources than you get out of the box. While you aren't going to get total freedom (you certainly won't be playing DVDs on an Apple TV), this beats having to rely primarily on streaming services.

Apple's long-running court battle over manipulating the pricing of e-books is getting even more dramatic. Next stop, the Supreme Court, Fortune reports. Back in June, Apple failed to get a Manhattan appeals court to overturn a 2014 ruling that would have it pay $450 million dollar settlement over the scandal. So Apple basically has no choice but to go to a higher authority if it wants to fight the case. A quick recap: The company was found guilty of fixing e-book pricing with publishers for the launch of iBooks on the original iPad, a move meant to raise prices from the low standard set by Amazon. Apple has argued that it didn't do anything wrong, and indeed it maintains in a filing today that "dynamic, disruptive entry into new or stagnant markets -- the lifeblood of American economic growth -- often requires the very type of" behavior it exhibited. Apple obviously can afford to pay the settlement, but at this point the legal battle seems to be more about principles than anything else.

Split-screen multitasking on the iPad is one of the standout additions in iOS 9, but not everyone has an iPad Air 2 (or soon, iPad Pro) to take advantage of it. Instead, the feature that most iPad users are likely to benefit from is picture-in-picture -- the ability to slide a video into the corner while you do something else on your tablet. BBC iPlayer is one of the first apps to adopt the new functionality, meaning you can watch Bake Off while reading some recipes, or keep BBC News in the background while you scan the headlines in Flipboard. The feature works on the iPad mini 2 and 3, iPad Air and Air 2, and the upcoming iPad Pro -- just press the home button during video playback to activate it.

We knew it was coming, and now it's here. Before the new wave of iPhonesmake their way to your hands, Cuperino's app that'll help you switch from Android is now available at Google Play. The "Move to iOS" app will transfer images, messages, contacts, calendars, mail accounts and more to one of Apple's devices. That new iPhone or iPad will create a private WiFi connection with your Android device (4.0 and later) to handle the transfer, promising to put all of the gathered content "in the right places." We'll be curious to see how well it actually works. Oh yeah, when you're all finished, Apple even offers to recycle your old phone at any Apple Store.

Game streaming is about to go mobile.
YouTube has announced that it is to introduce game streaming to its Android app at some as-of-yet unspecified point in the near future.
The feature, which was announced at The Tokyo Game Show, is being pitched in part as an effort to appeal to the mobile-heavy Japanese market, which is to be the first outside of US and the UK to receive the YouTube Gaming app.
"Japan's mobile games define its gaming culture, far more so than in other countries," YouTube's global gaming head Ryan Wyatt said. "This trend shows there's a real need for gamers to easily share what's on their screen with the gaming community, as it happens."
YouTube Gaming launched late last month. It is designed to square off directly with the highly popular Twitch service.
The ability to stream games is still conspicuously absent from iOS, except for those willing to jump through a considerable number of hoops.

The ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 is a well-designed Android tablet based on an Intel X86 platform that boasts better specs than the iPad mini 3 in many areas and is also less expensive. As configured, the ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA has an MSRP of $299, which is $99 less than the 16GB iPad mini 3, and $199 less than 64GB model. However, it's based on a quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and modern amenities like 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a USB Type-C port and a 2048X1536 IPS display. A 2GB RAM and 32GB variant can be found for $199 as well. In the benchmarks, the ZenPad S 8.0 handles pretty well, offering middle-of-the-pack performance in both standard CPU tests as well as gaming, in addition to running the latest version of Android Lollipop.

September 17th, 2015, 21:14 Posted By: wraggster
Matthew Yglesias writes at Vox that Apple's recent announcement of an entry level iPhone 6S is a serious strategic mistake because it contains just 16GB of storage — an amount that was arguably too low even a couple of years back. According to Yglesias, the user experience of an under-equipped iPhone can be quite bad, and the iPhone 6S comes with features — like the ability to shoot ultra-HD video — that are going to fill up a 16GB phone in the blink of an eye. "It's not too hard to figure out what Apple is up to here," writes Yglesias. "Leaving the entry-level unit at 16GB of storage rather than 32GB drives higher profit margins in two ways. One, it reduces the cost of manufacturing the $649 phone, which increases profit margins on sales of the lowest-end model. Second, and arguably more important, itpushes a lot of people who might be happy with a 32GB phone to shell out $749 for the 64GB model."
But this raises the question of what purpose is served by Apple amassing more money anyhow. Apple pays out large (and growing) sums of cash to existing shareholders in the form of dividends and buybacks, but its enormous cash stockpile keeps remorselessly marching up toward $200 billion. "Killing the 16GB phone and replacing it with a 32GB model at the low end would obtain things money can't buy — satisfied customers, positive press coverage, goodwill, a reputation for true commitment to excellence, and a demonstrated focus on the long term. A company in Apple's enviable position ought to be pushing the envelop forward on what's considered an acceptable baseline for outfitting a modern digital device, not squeezing extra pennies out of customers for no real reason."

We've seen a few snapshots of the upcoming Nexus phones and now we may have an idea what they'll be called. Droid Life reports that the pair of Google phones, one made by LG and the other by Huawei, will carry the labels of Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P (yes, six pee), respectively. The LG device is said to house a 5.2-inch display while the Huawei handset is rumored to carry a 5.7-inch inch screen, hence the 5 and 6 designations. We won't have to wait too long to find out, though, as reports indicate that Google is hosting event onSeptember 29th where the duo is expected to be revealed alongside a new Chromecast. And, of course, a look at the latest version of Android Marshmallow. Hopefully we'll also find out what Huawei has tucked under that camera hump, too.

When Microsoft first announced the Surface Pro back in 2012, many Apple fans snickered. Here was Microsoft, releasing a somewhat thick and heavy tablet that not only had a kickstand, but also an odd cover that doubled as a keyboard. And to top things off, the device made use of a stylus. Steve Jobs famously said in 2010, "If you see a stylus, they blew it." But Microsoft forged ahead with the Surface Pro 2, and later with the Surface Pro 3. Not only were customers becoming more aware of the Surface but competitors were also taking note. We've seen Lenovo introduce the ideapad MIIX 700, which incorporates its own kickstand and an Intel Skylake-based Core m7 processor. And most recently, we've seen Apple pull a literal 180 on this design and platform approach, announcing the iPad Pro — a device that features a fabric keyboard cover similar in concept to the Surface Pro and a stylus. Dell and ASUS have also brought compelling offerings to the table as well. However, the big head-to-head competition will no doubt be between the Surface Pro 4, which is set to be unveiled early next month and Apple's iPad Pro when it finally goes on sale.

Details have been rather scarce on Apple's rumored electric car project, but there's some new info today. Wall Street Journal reports that Cupertino is "accelerating" the codenamed Project Titan effort, internally calling it a "committed project." What's more, WSJ's sources indicate Apple is aiming to ship the first vehicle in 2019. Yes, that means you'll have to wait a while to get behind the wheel, but we should be hearing more detailed info soon enough, especially when the company begins testing on public roads. Perhaps what's more interesting, though, is the report says the first car won't be fully autonomous, despite that type of system being part of the long-term plan.

It's arriving a few days later than originally anticipated, but the first big Apple Watch software upgrade is here. As we heard during the big iPhone event a couple of weeks ago, watchOS 2 lets third-party developers create apps that run directly on the device itself, without relying on a connected phone. That means they have access to sensors embedded within the Watch itself, and they should be faster and easier to interact with. Some have compared this change to the introduction of the App Store on iOS in 2008, but we'll have to see what developers use it for first. Other changes include new customizable Watch faces with Photo, Photo Album and Time-Lapse, plus upgraded Apple Pay and Siri integration. It also has Activation Lock, so if someone steals your Watch they can't just reset it or easily access your data. One thing you'll still need your iPhone for is to actually get the update -- owners can check Software Update under the Watch app to start the download now.

Apple may have taken a long while to get users upgrading to iOS 8, but it isn't having any such trouble with iOS 9. The iPhone maker has revealed that more than half of all iOS devices are already running the new software less than a week after it launched. That's the fastest adoption rate yet for the platform, if you ask the folks in Cupertino. That's certainly better than on Android, where just 21 percent of users are running Lollipop, but it's not really that surprising when you realize that Apple has bent over backwards to put iOS 9 on as many devices as possible.

There have been many attempts at bringing classic gaming to smartphones, but they all lack the most visceral part of the experience: the satisfying ka-chunk of plugging a cartridge into your console. You might get that vibe back if Japanese startup Beatrobo has its way. It's launching the Pico Cassette, a game cartridge that you plug into your phone's headphone jack. Unlike the vintage carts of yore, though, these don't actually hold games -- instead, they transmit an inaudible tone that unlocks content you've downloaded. No, it's not just a nostalgic approach to anti-piracy measures. The technology also enables saved games that sync across multiple devices, so the cartridge will feel more like your unique copy than a mere dongle.

Last week we reported how a number of malware-ridden apps were found on the Chinese version of Apple's App Store. The iPhone-maker has since confirmed the offending apps have been removed. The malicious apps were reportedly created using a bogus version of Xcode (the developer tool for iOS apps) that snuck hidden, malicious features into genuine apps with a program called "XcodeGhost". Curiously, a tactic also considered by the CIA at one point. Exactly how many apps were affected is unclear, but popular titles in the country like WeChat, and car-hailing app Didi Kuaidione are reported to be on the list. Security firm Qihoo360 Technology is reporting at least 344 were removed from the store.

If you’ve been having trouble accessing Apple’s App Store it’s because the tech giant has faced a series of major attacks.
The firm has revealed it is cleaning up its iOS App Store to help remove malicious iPhone and iPad programs as part of the first large scale attack on the tech vendor.
Apple identified the malware after various cyber security companies found a malicious program dubbed XcodeGhost, which was embedded in hundreds of legitimate apps.
The attackers created a counterfeit version of the Apple’s iOS software that builds apps, which they convinced developers to download.
When apps are designed using this phony tool, hackers are able to steal data about users and send it to their servers.
This hack is no doubt very concerning for Apple customers, for example cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks reviewed the malware and found that these hackers could also send fake alerts to infected devices, which could trick users into revealing personal data.
David Emm, principle security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, said: "While the majority of mobile malware targets victims running Android, this incident highlights the fact that iOS isn’t immune to malware.
"Apple’s ‘walled garden’ approach does make it harder for cybercriminals to compromise apps, but if something does slip through the net, as in this case, there’s no protection available because Apple doesn’t provide third-party developers with the means to develop anti-malware protection for iOS."
Some of the apps that have been affected include WeChat, NetEase’s music downloading app and an app similar to taxi service Uber called Didi Kuaidi.
Apple has since revealed that all apps created using the software have been removed from the App Store. In addition, Palo Alto Networks also revealed that the malware was unable to uncover any data, but this certainly proves that developers are a huge target.
This breach will of course make many customers feel uneasy, especially with the new iPhone 6S launch around the corner.
Similarly, Amazon has been suffering from a tech malfunction with its Amazon Web Services this week.
A server issue in Virginia is reportedly affecting products and services for consumers, including Netflix, Product Hunt, Medium, Pcoket, Viber Amazon Echo and more.
This glitch also affected some customers using smart home products through Amazon Web Services; while others were not able to watch their favourite episode of Breaking Bad on Netflix.
Most services have returned to normal, but it may take some before everything is running normally again.

Pokemon Go marks Nintendo's biggest move into mobile yet: the augmented reality mobile game makes use of your location as well as your phone's camera to let you interact with pocket monsters in the real world. It's an audacious idea — with an accompanying trailer — but as one writer points out it will have to nail a lot of different systems to build up an active community in the same that developer Niantic has done for its previous game, Ingress. The author looks at Ingress to see where Nintendo and Niantic may draw inspiration, pointing out that the game's portal modding system could prove a great mechanism for allowing Pokemon evolutions. Expect plenty more Pokemonamiibo to interact with the upcoming wristband, too.

iOS 9 is deceptive. When Apple first publicly trotted out the update at WWDC a few months back, it seemed happy to hang its hat on just a few new features: Apple News, better Maps and an improved Notes app. After using the betas for months and putting in still more time with the final, ready-for-everyone build, though, it's clear that what Apple built is far more nuanced than it might have let on. (And there I was, thinking I'd have an easy review to write. Silly me.) Instead, what we've got here is in some ways a continuation of a philosophy that seemed to start in earnest in the Apple Watch. iOS 9 is less about new, whizbang features and more about getting the stuff we do everyday done just a little quicker, a little more efficiently. And you know what? That's more valuable than you might think.

It's practically a cliché to say that Apple's products are difficult to repairyourself, but that isn't universally true. The crew at iFixit has managed to tear down the new Apple TV before it even ships, and the biggest surprise is simply that it's easy to pry apart. This is a very modular set-top box, and it'd be relatively trivial to replace components like the motherboard or power supply. Even the remote, despite being sealed by adhesive, isn't that hard to dissect. iFixit's only major gripe is that the most crucial parts are integrated on the main board, which could lead to a costly fix if you're just trying to replace a damaged port.

The public perception of the black-hat hacker is of a lone person sitting in a dark room creating malware and unleashing it on the world and reaping the profits of their exploit. The reality is a bit more complicated and far more financially lucrative. Nothing shines a light on this more than the Zerodium publicity stunt of offering $1 million for iOS 9 zero-day exploits. Founder Chaouki Bekrar has a history of selling exploits to the highest bidder instead of disclosing the issue to the maker of the compromised product. It flies in the face of responsible disclosure of exploits by security researchers and means that anyone with enough cash will have the ammunition to ruin the digital life of anyone with an iPhone.

Sure, you may have an idea of what high-end Windows 10 phones will be like, but what about the cheap-and-cheerful models that people are more likely to buy? You might not have to wonder any longer. Both OneTile andWMPoweruser claim to have images and details of the Lumia 550, Microsoft's first entry-level Windows 10 handset. The looks are nothing special (surprise, it's a basic phone!), but it reportedly packs a little more punch than many starter devices between its 4.7-inch 720p screen and speedy LTE data. The rumored Snapdragon 210 processor, 8GB of expandable storage, 5-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front cam are par for the course, but you'd also shell out just $120 -- a bargain when Motorola's Moto E has a less impressive 960 x 540 screen and a mediocre 0.3-megapixel front shooter. As such, you may have something to look forward to at Microsoft's October 6th event if you're more interested in value for money than raw performance.

BlackBerry's upcoming Android phone has been called "Venice" for quite some time, but that's apparently nothing but a moniker meant to be shed and replaced by its real model name. According to Evleaks and N4BB, it will be released as the BlackBerry Priv, presumably due to its privacy features. Evleaks also revealed a new stock photo of the phone, which you can see below the fold. Don't expect to see anything new, though: it's still a QWERTY slider with a curved screen and an 18-megapixel camera. Hopefully, we'll find out more about it and its release date soon. If the device turns out to have killer features, then it doesn't matter what it's called: after all, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

The launch of iOS 9 was supposed to be a joyous occasion if you own an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, but it didn't always work out that way. A bug left some stuck on the "slide to upgrade" screen, preventing them from using their gear unless they rolled back to iOS 8 or started fresh. If you're one of those glitch victims, you'll be glad to hear that relief is in sight: Apple has released an iOS 9.0.1 update that (you guessed it) makes sure you get past that upgrade screen. It also tackles a few other hiccups that could sour your initial experience, including one that prevented some alarms and timers from playing. As such, you'll probably want to check for the update right away. And if it's too late to avoid the worst, Apple's support site (linked above) has a guide to getting your device back to normal.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen may be immensely proud of his company's upcoming Android-powered Priv smartphone, but he still has a few things to learn about using it. In an on-camera demo of the Priv for BNN, it's apparent that the exec hasn't used Android much -- he talks about how it "runs Google," and has trouble launching basics like Chrome. Not exactly putting your best foot forward, BlackBerry. It's hard not to sympathize a bit with Chen, since he's likely been using BlackBerry 10 devices for a while. With that said, SlashGearraises a valid concern about what this goof-ridden clip means for long-time users. Moving to Android is a big help for newcomers and people who'd left BlackBerry for greener pastures, but it might alienate loyal fans who've never tried another company's platform.

Apple's iPhone 6s is the company's new sales champ, with 13 million units sold just three days after launch. "Sales... (blew) past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple's history," said CEO Tim Cook in a statement. The new handset easily beat the iPhone 6, which was in 10 million consumer's hands by the same three-day period a year ago. So how did Apple manage to sell around $10 billion worth of phones in such a short time-frame? Good press on the devices didn't hurt, but for the first time, the iPhone 6s launched in China at the same time that it debuted in the US and Europe.

Apple has just rolled out iOS 9.0.1, and it unfortunately has a flaw in tow that gives nosy techies a way to bypass your lock screen -- yet again. YouTube user videosdebarraquito posted a of how the hack is carried out, as you can see below the fold. Similar to previous bypass techniques (and there wereseveral), the latest one is also quite tough to execute: the hacker has to be fast enough to launch Siri after typing in five incorrect passcodes and before the device locks him out. The timing has to be perfect or else it wouldn't work, but if it does, then he can jump into the clock app from Siri, then into Messages, Contacts and Photos.

Ads pay the bills for a lot of sites (including this one). But they can also be intrusive and with some of the tracking abilities available out there, a bit creepy. To combat some of that and to speed up page loads Apple introduced a Content Blocker feature for mobile Safari that allows third-party developers to create extensions that are "a fast and efficient way to block cookies, images, resources, pop-ups, and other content." Apparently people really hate advertisements on the internet because ad blockers have rocketed to the top of the paid app section of the App Store. But the side effect of at least a few of these apps is that it screws up shopping on the online versions of Sears and Walmart. Fortune talked to the developer of Crystal, an app that's messing with some shopping sites. After they informed him about what was happening, he said he would remove the sites from a blacklist. But, during our test, we were still unable to get to some product pages on Walmart.com to load. So, we decided to test some more online shops to how much commerce is being thwarted by a hatred of ads.

Underneath the hood of Apple's new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models is a new custom designed System-on-Chip (SoC) that Apple has dubbed its A9 processor. It's a 64-bit chip that, according to Apple, is the most advanced ever built for any smartphone, and that's just one of many claims coming out of Cupertino. Apple is also claiming a level of gaming performance on par with dedicated game consoles and with a graphics engine that's 90 percent faster than the previous generation. For compute chores, Apple says the A9 chip improves overall CPU performance by up to 70 percent. These performance promises come without divulging too much about the physical makeup of the A9, though in testing its dual-core SoC does seem to compete well with the likes of Samsung's octal-core Exynos chips found in the Galaxy S6 line. Further, in intial graphics benchmark testing, the A9 also leads the pack in mosts tests, sometimes by a healthy margin, even besting Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 in tests like 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited.
