An anonymous reader notes that Apple is being sued over claims that iOS 8 uses too much storage space on the company's devices."Ever wonder why there never is enough space on your iPhone or iPad? A lawsuit filed this week against Apple Inc. alleges that upgrades to the iOS 8 operating system are to blame, and that the company has misled customers about it. In the legal complaint filed in California, Miami residents Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara accuse Apple of "storage capacity misrepresentations and omissions" relating to Apple's 8 GB and 16GB iPhones, iPads and iPods. Orshan has two iPhone 5 and two iPads while Endara had purchased an iPhone 6. They contend the upgrades to the operating system end up taking up as much as 23 percent of the storage space on their devices."

Apple is being sued for allegedly advertising its iPad, iPod and iPhone devices as having more storage space than they actually have.
The lawsuit, filed in California by Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara, argues that iOS 8 takes up such a large chunk of memory within a device - what's left for users to store their data is far less than advertised, reports Sky News.
The complaintants say that iOS 8 can take up to 23.1 per cent of some Apple devices' memory, while upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS 8 can cause users to lose as much as 1.3GB of data.
They say this means users run out of space and then have to sign up for Apple's paid-for iCloud storage service. The pair are seeking millions of dollars in damages.
The lawsuit states: "Using these sharp business tactics, [Apple] gives less storage capacity than advertised, only to offer to sell that capacity in a desperate moment, eg when a consumer is trying to record or take photos at a child or grandchild's recital, basketball game or wedding.
"Each gigabyte of storage Apple shortchanges its customers amounts to approximately 400-500 high resolution photographs."
Apple has not commented on the lawsuit.

Razer has joined other recent comers in the Android TV arena with Forge TV, but unlike the others, its box is aimed squarely at gamers, not cord-cutters. As such, it's suitably powerful with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 CPU, Adreno 420 GPU, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage. Yes, that'll let it handle garden-variety Google Play games for up to four players and beam them onto a big-screen TV. But the Forge TV's main powers have little to do with weak-sauce Android gaming, and more to do with Razer Bluetooth peripherals and the piece de resistance called "Cortex: Stream." That tech uses WiFi to give you low-latency streaming from a source far more suitable to gaming than a dinky Android box -- namely, your PC.

Fancy a new iPhone, but don't want to be locked in with a specific carrier? Good news: Apple today started selling SIM-free versions of its iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Prior to this, you had to choose a two-year contract or buy one of them unlocked with T-Mobile. Thankfully, that's no longer a problem. The SIM-free versions start at $649 for the 16GB iPhone 6, climbing up to $949 for the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus. Apple has taken atad longer than usual to offer the unlocked versions, both online and in-store. Of course, you'll still need to sidle up with a carrier, but at least now you'll have more control over the contract you choose.

Apple has been granted a US patent for devices made almost exclusively from flexible components.
The devices will allow for force-based gesture input, meaning users may be able to squeeze the device to perform a command.
Unlike a number of other flexible devices and patents, Apple is planning to incorporate not only malleable external parts, but pliable internal components, meaning batteries, circuit boards, and other electrical components will not be negatively impacted when the device is flexed, bent and folded.
As well as being able to squeeze and manipulate the device, the patent suggests that Apple is planning to include bi-stable mechanics, meaning that certain points of the device would have stable positions that can be activated when required.
Last year Apple unveiled its latest smartphones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Shortly after the 5.5-inch 6 Plus made its way into consumer’s hands, some complained about them ending up bent out of shape after being placed in their pockets.
Maybe Apple will be able to avoid this problem with its next gen iPhone by having one that’s actually supposed to bend.

Microsoft has jumped on that hot new gold-hued phone craze with special edition models of its Lumia 830 and 930 smartphones. Yes, we're mocking Redmond a bit for being late to a nearly two-year old trend, but we'd add that the subtle gold accenting on the phones' edges actually looks great. Both are at the top of the Lumia food chain and still sport Nokia branding, which Microsoft already dropped on the Lumia 535. It no doubt introduced the new models to maintain interest and sales in its top models, since it may not introduce a new flagship anytime soon. Alas, they're limited to Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa for now, with no sign yet they'll come to North America. Prices will vary by operator, but the Nokia 830 and 930 run about $400 (€330) and $580 (€500) respectively.

Apple is allegedly finishing up its anticipated Apple Watch, and it seems we may not have to wait much longer.
Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that the device is currently on track to ship in the US by the end of March.
The firm originally said that the Apple Watch would not ship until early 2015, while other rumours suggested it would not launch until spring.
However, 9to5Mac reports that the watch will launch in March, with Apple planning extensive testing to familairise employees with the new device in February.
The watch features a ‘Digital Crown’ and a brand new OS, plus it will also work with the iPhone 5 and 6.
Pricing starts at $349, although other models have been showcased, such as a diamond version that will cost $30,000.

If you live in Europe or Canada, you might find that some apps are now a little more expensive on your iPhone or iPad. Yesterday, Apple informed developers that it would be raising prices before the weekend to reflect changes in VAT and foreign exchange rates. Those increases are now starting to take effect, with a 10 pence rise for the cheapest premium apps in the UK, up from £0.69 to £0.79, and a new €0.99 starting price in EU countries. The minimum spend in Canada (beyond free apps, anyway) hasrisen from $0.99 to $1.19, and Norway, which uses its Norwegian krone, should see a similar rise in price. Apple is tinkering with app fees in Iceland and Russia too, so if you live in any of these countries it's probably worth opening up the App Store to assess the damage.

Apple took a big step forward when it expanded the scope of its two-step authentication last year, since it's now relatively hard to peek at someone's sensitive content unless you also have their device. However, this extra security measure still isn't the all-encompassing safety net you might expect it to be. Need proof? Just ask Dani Grant: she recently gave a friendly reminder that two-factor doesn't even enter the picture with a number of Apple's services. You only need an Apple ID's email address and password to get into FaceTime, iMessage, iTunes and the company's website. You'll need verification if you change account details, sign in to iCloud or try to buy an app, but that basic login is enough to see people's contact information, view their app download history or impersonate them on iMessage. You typically only get email alerts when someone signs into FaceTime on a new device, so it's possible for someone to misuse your account without your knowledge.

Apple probably thought it was doing everyone a favour when it introduced a two-week refund policy for iTunes and App Store purchases in Europe. But of course, as is always the way with technology, if there's an unintended flaw hidden away you can guarantee someone will find it. On this occasion it was 9to5Mac, who discovered that anyone can keep a recently purchased app on their device, even after Apple has processed the refund for it. The apps aren't removed and the user isn't locked out, so there was nothing to stop savvy iPhone and iPad owners from abusing the system. Well, it appears Apple has already taken note. If you refund too many items, you'll now be greeted with a warning message that effectively locks you out of the refund policy. It won't stop determined users from claiming a few free apps, but it should mean Apple can keep a lid on a potentially dubious practice.

Apple already lets accessory makers use the Lightning port on iOS devices for headphones. However, it's reportedly close to opening the floodgates to more devices. And if 9to5Mac's leaked specs are accurate, the company will let these peripherals do more than you might expect. Lightning lets the iPhone send power and data to everything from game controllers to speakers, but it should also let you pass through other accessories at the same time. A dock could charge and sync your iPhone while you listen to music without needing a mess of extra cables, for instance. The connector should also charge battery-powered gear faster than the standard USB cables you use today.

A man attempting to cross the Chinese border with 94 iPhones strapped to him has been detained.
The Hong Kong man was caught at the Futian crossing in Shenzhen, where custom officials were suspicious of his strange walk.
After searching through his belongings and finding nothing, officials asked the man to walk through a metal detector, which caused the alarm to go off.
According to a Chinese news report, officials discovered 94 iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S models that were strapped to his legs, torso and groin, with an estimated value of $49,000 (£32,462).
Although the phones are available for purchase in Apple stores in China, the rate for the iPhone 6 was thousands of dollars.
It is unclear where the iPhones were originally purchased from.

Ever since buying Nokia, Microsoft has made its Windows Phone ambitions clear. Instead of rapidly iterating to keep pace with the Galaxy S5s and HTC Ones of the world, it would focus on pushing the price down to compete with the low-end Android devices that make up the bulk of the smartphone market around the world. Today, it's taken another step towards making that ambition a reality with the launch of the Lumia 435, a handset that costs just €69 (roughly $80) before tax.

A day after Google publicized a flaw in Windows 8.1 before Microsoft could do anything about it, news broke about a security vulnerability in Android that the Mountain View company, well, won't fix at all. Rafay Baloch, an independent researcher, and Joe Vennix, an engineer at Rapid7 (a security and data analytics firm)found a serious bug in the WebView component of Android 4.3 and below. It's an older bit of software that lets apps view webpages without launching a separate app, and the bug in question potentially opens up affected phones to malicious hackers. Android 4.4 and 5.0 are unaffected by the bug, but as 60 percent of Android users -- that's close to a billion people -- still use Android 4.3 or lower, it still affects a lot of people. Unfortunately, as Tod Beardsley, a Rapid7 analyst, found out, there's no easy way for Google to fix it.

If you're a Lumia phone owner, you no longer have to get lucky (or install a preview release) just to get all of the latest Windows Phone features. Microsoft is about to startthe wider rollout of Lumia Denim, a Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 upgrade that packs a lot of improvements to both imaging and Cortana voice commands. It's not saying exactly who's a candidate in this next wave, but many countries and devices will start seeing Denim later this month -- depending on how quickly the carriers finish testing, of course. Verizon already brought Denim to the US through the 822 and 928 back in December, but the broader deployment suggests that other American Lumias are due relatively soon.

Apple is allegedly considering its own stylus for its upcoming ‘iPad Pro’.
The rumous have come from Min-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, who was also responsible for revealing other secrets including the Apple Watch release.
Kuo has revealed that Apple has a number of stylus-related patents, which suggest the company will launch a stylus in Q2 this year.
Apple Insider reports that Apple will launch the device as an optional add-on for its rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
According to Apple Insider, Kuo wrote: “Given that it's more precise than a person's fingers, a stylus can be more convenient to use than the combination of keyboard and mouse in some cases.
"Therefore, we believe Apple's stylus will improve the user experience of 12.9-inch iPad."
This news comes after rumours alleged that the Apple will launch its upcoming Apple Watch in March.
The device will cost $349 and will feature its own OS.

Microsoft recently made the surprising decision to partner with Dropbox, meaning its walled Windows garden would no longer be limited to OneDrive. Now we're seeing the fruit of that relationship with the arrival of an official Windows Phone client. That means you can now tap into your Dropbox account from any Windows device, be it a phone, tablet or laptop. Heck, it even works on Windows RT. All your favorite features are in tow, including automatic photo backups and the ability to "favorite" s file for offline access. Plus, Dropbox already has tight ties with Office, where you can edit documents directly in the former, or access Dropbox files from the latter. If you haven't already swallowed the OneDrive Kool-Aid you can go download the Windows Phone version of Dropbox now.

In case you haven't noticed, team Engadget has spent a lot of time today coveringWindows 10, Microsoft's next-gen operating system. Over the course of the company's three-hour keynote, we heard quite a bit more about its so-called universal apps, which will run on all manner of Windows devices, whether they be desktops, tablets, phones or even 84-inch pen displays. That said, there were a couple tidbits the company left out of its presentation. For one thing, we only just learned for sure that the Lumia Camera app -- the one included in the recent "Denim" update -- will actually be the default camera app on all Windows 10 devices. That means even if you're using a Windows device made by Samsung or HTC, you'll get the same photography experience as on a proper Lumia, at least as far as software and image editing go (actual image quality is a different story).

Microsoft isn't the only big tech firm grappling with surprise security flaw disclosuresthese days. Google's Project Zero security unit revealed at least two unpatchedvulnerabilities in OS X (Yosemite appears to have mitigated a third) that theoretically help attackers take control of your Mac. The search company says it privately notified Apple about the holes back in October, but automatically published the details after Project Zero's usual 90-day cutoff period. Apple's usual policy is to decline comment on exploits like this until it has a solution. However, relief is at least relatively close --iMore reports that an upcoming Yosemite update (10.10.2) is expected to tackle these flaws. The main question is whether or not Apple can deliver its fix before malware writers find a way to use those bugs for sinister purposes.

Microsoft promised Windows Phone users a free upgrade to Windows 10 at its event earlier this week, but it turns out not all phones will be getting the update. Through itsLumia Conversations blog, the company clarifies "not every phone will upgrade or support all possible Windows 10 features," adding that its goal is for "the majority of the Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8 and 8.1" to be upgraded. That's at odds with what the company's Twitter account has said in the past.

You might not be happy that Google isn't fixing a web security flaw in your older Android phone, but the search giant now says that it has some good reasons for holding off. As the company's Adrian Ludwig explains, it's no longer viable to "safely" patch vulnerable, pre-Android 4.4 versions of WebView (a framework that lets apps show websites without a separate browser) to prevent remote attacks. The sheer amount of necessary code changes would create legions of problems, he claims, especially since developers are introducing "thousands" of tweaks to the open source software every month.

Free stuff is always great, especially if people actually want what's on offer. Apple now has a special section called "Free on iTunes" where you can find TV shows and music freebies if you've already blown through your monthly entertainment budget. It features TV episodes from 12 Monkeys, Eye Candy and others, as well as music from bands like Purity Ring and Houndmouth. As 9to5 Mac points out, Apple offered a similar service before, but this time, the focus seems to be less on hits and more on material that's still looking for an audience.

Consumers can now get a refund on any digital purchase made from Apple, no questions asked.
Apple last month quietly altered its European iTunes terms and conditions to allow for the return of any digital purchase from iTunes or the App Store within 14 days of purchase.
Until now all refund requests were dealt with on a case-by-case basis, with Apple making the final call as it saw fit. This remains the case in the US.
The change is to comply with new European digital retail rules that give consumers the right to a refund on all purchases, even if they are digital.
Legally a company is not required to issue a refund if a ‘performance’ of the product has taken place – i.e. an album has been listed to or a video watched. But Apple appears to have applied the rules in a broader sense.

If you're running Android 4.3 or earlier, you're pretty much out of luck when it comes to a baked-in defense against a WebView vulnerability that was discovered earlier this month by security analyst Tod Beardsley. The vulnerability leaves millions of users open to attack from hackers that choose to exploit the security hole. WebView is a core component of the Android operating system that renders web pages. The good news is that the version of WebView included in Android 4.4 KitKat and Android 5.0 Lollipop is based on Chromium and is not affected by the vulnerability. The bad news is that those running Android 4.3 and earlier are wide open, which means that 60 percent of Android users (or nearly one billion customers) are affected. What's most interesting is that Google has no trouble tossing grenades at the feet of Microsoft and Apple courtesy of its Project Zero program, but doesn't seem to have the resources to fix a vulnerability that affects a substantial portion of the Android user base.

Now here's something we've never expected to write: Microsoft is investing in Android -- well, sort of. The software giant is reportedly planning to become a minority investor in Cyanogen, best known for its customized version of Android, according to the Wall Street Journal. Neither company is talking about the deal, naturally, and we still don't know how big Microsoft's investment may be. Bloomberg reports that the two companies are in negotiations to create a version of Cyanogen's image that features Microsoft's services (similar to what Nokia did with its X series, whichMicrosoft killed off). The report comes only a few months after Cyanogen refused a Google buyout offer, supposedly because it wants to keep the dream of a truly open version of Android alive. The more likely reason? Cyanogen will probably end up being worth a lot more after additional investments than what Google was willing to pay.

When people talk about Apple and Samsung, the lazy narrative is to say that Apple makes the most money, but Samsung makes the most devices. According to Strategy Analytics, however, that story may no longer actually be the case. In its latest look at the state of the industry, Apple and Samsung both shipped an estimated 74.5 million devices in the last three months of 2014, making them joint first in the shipments race. Of course, this was the first period where both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were made available, but even still, those are some hefty numbers.

It's only been a few weeks since Microsoft released the preview versions of Office for Android, but the software giant is finally ready to bring the final version of those apps to Google Play. Starting some time Thursday morning -- we're hearing from around 10 a.m. ET onwards -- you'll be able to download the finished versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint to your Android tablet. As before, the requirements for downloading said apps include having a tablet that's 7-inches or larger that's also running Android 4.4 KitKat or newer. They also have to have an ARM-based processor and 1GB of RAM or above.

Of all the mysteries still surrounding the Apple Watch, its long-awaited launch window was easily the most debated. Well, not any more. Apple CEO Tim Cook just confirmed during the company's quarterly earnings call that the company's oft-hyped Watch should ship in April 2015 -- not March like many of us suspected/hoped.
"The creativity and software innovation going on around Apple Watch is incredibly exciting," Cook said after diving into Apple Pay's progress. "We cant wait for our customers to experience them when Apple Watch becomes available."

Developers utilizing Unreal Engine 4 can now make games specifically for Ouya, the microconsole company has announced.
The Unreal Engine blog hosts an announcement from the Ouya team, which explains devs will need an Unreal Engine subscription as well as their Unreal account linked via GitHub to download the Ouya fork of the engine.
"The fork of the Unreal Editor has built-in support for the Ouya SDK from Blueprints making Ouya Everywhere and Ouya In-App Purchases available to coders and non-coders.â€

Five years ago, Steve Jobs introduced the iPad and insisted that it would do many things better than either a laptop or a smartphone. Will Oremus writes at Future Tense that by most standards, the iPad has been a success, and the tablet has indeed emerged as a third category of computing device. But there's another way of looking at the iPad. According to Oremus, Jobs was right to leave out the productivity features and go big on the simple tactile pleasure of holding the Internet in your hands.
But for all its popularity and appeal, the iPad never has quite cleared the bar Jobs set for it, which was to be "far better" at some key tasks than a laptop or a smartphone. The iPad may have been "far better" when it was first released, but smartphones have come a long way. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and their Android equivalents are now convenient enough for most mobile computing tasks that there's no need to carry around a tablet as well. That helps explainwhy iPad sales have plateaued, rather than continuing to ascend to the stratospheric levels of the iPhone. "The iPad remains an impressive machine. But it also remains a luxury item rather than a necessity," concludes Oremus. "Again, by most standards, it is a major success. Just not by the high standards that Jobs himself set for it five years ago."

Microconsole maker Ouya has reportedly struck a $10m investment deal with Chinese internet firm Alibaba.
The Wall Street Journal indicates that Alibaba's investment is part of a push into China's budding console market. According to “people familiar with the matter,†the two businesses have agreed on a deal that will integrate Ouya's interface and its library of more than 1,000 titles into Alibaba's set-top box.
Speaking with Games Beat, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman explained the move from the hardware company's perspective.
"Sometimes a new market, like China for game consoles, can leapfrog an established one. China's advantage is that it lacks the baggage of the US console market."
Alibaba itself just recently put $215m into mobile-messaging startup Tango – the most notable of several major investments the firm has made toward various tech and game development studio's in 2014.

James B. Stewart writes in the NYT that in 1998 Bill Gates said in an interview that he "couldn't imagine a situation in which Apple would ever be bigger and more profitable than Microsoft" but less than two decades later, Apple, with a market capitalization more than double Microsoft's, has won. The most successful companies need a vision, and both Apple and Microsoft have one. But according to Stewart, Apple's vision was more radical and, as it turns out, more farsighted. Where Microsoft foresaw a computer on every person's desk, Apple went a big step further: Its vision was a computer in every pocket. "Apple has been very visionary in creating and expanding significant new consumer electronics categories," says Toni Sacconaghi. "Unique, disruptive innovation is really hard to do. Doing it multiple times, as Apple has, is extremely difficult." According to Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson, Microsoft seemed to have the better business for a long time. "But in the end, it didn't create products of ethereal beauty. Steve believed you had to control every brush stroke from beginning to end. Not because he was a control freak, but because he had a passion for perfection." Can Apple continue to live by Jobs's disruptive creed now that the company is as successful as Microsoft once was? According to Robert Cihra it was one thing for Apple to cannibalize its iPod or Mac businesses, but quite another to risk its iPhone juggernaut. "The question investors have is, what's the next iPhone? There's no obvious answer. It's almost impossible to think of anything that will create a $140 billion business out of nothing."
