The ScummVM Team have released a new version of ScummVM for nearly every system released, heres the details and whats new etc:
Information about scummvm
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more.
Todays release news:
As we turned to a 6 months release cycle, here is our newest and best ScummVM version for you!
A couple of new engines were added, and besides 2 Humongous Entertainment titles, we now support The 7th Guest and Bud Tucker in Double Trouble.
Among other notable things there is a completely new vector-based GUI, which is a merged work of our last year GSoC student Vicent Marti, as well as a General Main Menu which adds a common save/load interface to most of our engines, adding the much awaited Return to Launcher feature along the way. It was the work of another successful student, Chris Page.
release notes
Notes:

General:
- Added MIDI driver for Atari ST / FreeMint.

Just like Eye-Fi promised in January, the WiFi SD card maker is adding video sharing to its repertoire. The new Explore Video and Share Video cards bring video sharing and 4GB capacities to the existing photo sharing lineup. The new cards go for $99 and $79, respectively, while the old 2GB Eye-Fi Home and Eye-Fi Share cards have been marked down to $49 and $59 each. The cards can handle uploads to YouTube and Flickr, and are built for HD uploads, and naturally the Explore card adds the hotspot service and geotagging on top of regular service. You can pre-order the cards today, and they should be shipping by the end of the month. Eye-Fi is also releasing a free iPhone app (as promised) this week, which works with your existing Eye-Fi account (yeah, you need to own a card) and allows you to upload iPhone shots to the same 25 services the SD cards work with, along with the computer syncing Eye-Fi is known for.

It's hard to call two incidents of some occurrence around the world a trend, but, when those incidents both involve an electrical device catching fire spontaneously, it creates a situation that's hard to ignore -- especially when that device is the iPhone. On Saturday, Italian blogger Tim Colbourne was charging his 3G handset and, after three hours, it sparked and caught fire at the base. Tim did a little investigation and found a case of a Swedish handset doing the same thing back in 2008, making us a little concerned that there could be more melted chargers out there. Apple replaced that earlier phone after something of a fight, and while we're hoping they'll be a little friendlier here, we're also hoping this gives Cupertino another bit of incentive to go ahead and switch over to micro-USB already. All the cool kids are doing it, and you don't see their cables catching fire -- usually.

Something else that happened during my internet outage! xGPS 1.2 which we gave you a sneak peak of back in February went live. The previous version saw 162078 downloads from our repo and at the time of this posting 121098 have downloaded version 1.2. That leaves about 40,000 of you that still need to update. Do it. The price is right (free). It's worth it I promise . Give some props to the devs!

MapIt GPS Navigation by Mojos Studios is a flexible GPS Navigation solution which enables the user to use own maps, graphics and even photos for all navigation purposes. It is a great solution for walking, biking and several more navigation and outdoor topics. MapIt offers the possibility to import photographic material (JPEG, Bitmap) from PC Computers. The import is handled using a framework concept which works similar to photo software, but works with maps.

While most of Hama's CeBIT booth consisted of random USB drives, cases and other sorts of low-rate accessories, this particular low-rate accessory grabbed our hearts and wouldn't let go. The absurdly titled Game Wheel Speed-X is evidently geared to work with Apple's latest iPod touch, though we reckon an iPhone 3G should slide right in without too much effort. Clearly, this aims to be a Wii Wheel for your favorite Apple handheld, though we have to wonder how many individuals plan on carrying this ridiculously large piece of plastic around with their touch. Actually, we don't have to wonder. Jump past the break for a couple of video demonstrations.

Roger McNamee, founding partner of the Palm-rescuing investment firm Elevation Partners, has had some interesting things to say about what to expect from the Pre. Now, though, he's really out done himself with what he has to say about the iPhone. In an interview with Bloomberg, McNamee (aka "Chubby Wombat Moonalice" when playing bass) predicted that the Pre will bring the downfall of Apple's wunder-handset, saying:
June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. Think about it -- if you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they're going to buy.
We don't know the future, but we can sure tell you what we're not buying right now. And besides, we don't know too many early adopter types that could resist the siren call of 3G halfway through their existing iPhone contract, thereby re-upping their contract for another few millenia. That should be plenty enough time for Apple to whip up something new... or at least for Roger to get a haircut.

No immediate plans to fold mobile games service into upcoming Ovi Store.
Nokia has indicated that N-Gage will not be folded into the company's Ovi app store, which is due to go live in May.
Speaking to Reuters, Nokia's VP for media Marco Argenti said Ovi Store would sell 'mass market games' (presumably Java titles), with N-Gage seperately catering for high-end devices and hard core gamers.
He said: "Our goal in the medium term is really to converge everything into a single distribution channel...
it's the [N-Gage] experience we decided to preserve, at least at this stage."
The Ovi Store will be downloadable to S40 and S60 devices from May, and will be pre-installed in the N97 from July. Nokia expects 300 million phones a year to integrate the store by 2013.
Companies such as EA, Facebook, Fox, Lonely Planet, Shazam and others are already committed.

Okay, so Metal Gear on iPhone isn't a full sneak-off, but it probably wouldn't have worked anyway. Konami looks to be making a game that suits the touch screen and it looks very nice indeed.
As you can see, Metal Gear Solid Touch is a fixed-position shooter based on the Metal Gear Solid 4 storyline.
You tap the screen to shoot various enemies in a range of environments from the PS3 game, and duck into cover to avoid enemy fire. Could make a good pastime on the Tube.

Konami has served iPhone gamers Dance Dance Revolution S, a portable version of its fancy footwork rhythm game that trades in frantic legwork and perspiration for lots and lots of touchscreen tapping.
Gameplay is as straightforward as it gets, requiring players to tap four touchscreen arrows in time as they scroll by to the beat of shrill pop music. Konami promises "innovative new gameplay modes" which we'll assume to refer to the "Shake Mode" which uses the iPhone's built-in

I'll admit it, I have a bit of a iPhone addiction. So I go through an unhealthy number of games on my phone every week. Often they lose my interest after a day or two.
But I'm quite captivated with WordFu, a blending of Yahtzee and Scrabble with a few power-ups and plenty of silly sound effects thrown in for good measure.
To play you shake your iPhone to scramble the letter dice. Once you're happy with your selection you touch play and start touching out the letters to form words. The more words you form the higher your score.
If you form enough words you start getting power ups that do things like freeze the time, let you change out a letter die or gives you a score multiplier. It's a simple concept, but quite a bit of fun.
The only downside is that there's no online support, just local multiplayer, but it's only $1, so I'll put up with that..

Lets face it. Apple does not allow many very cool apps for sale in the App Store because of their very tight (and in many cases unreasonable) restrictions. The developers of these apps (PDANet, MySMS and iBlacklist to name a few of the many) still want to earn a little revenue for their hard work and until now have been forced to come up with their own sales solutions on Cydia/Installer.
Tonight the game will start changing as Jay Freeman (Saurik) releases the Cydia Store. Just moments ago Freeman announced on Twitter that "Tonight (late) a new Cydia will come out with one package 'for sale' (more over the next week): more details will be in Cydia."

1UP points out that, according to iPhone app tracking site Mobclix, more than 6,000 iPhone / iPod Touch games are now available via Apple's iTunes App Store. The digital distribution service, which launched July 11, 2008, is home to over 20,400 apps across multiple categories, of which games comprise 23% (the largest slice). 17% of all iPhone games are in the puzzle genre.
Each week, Joystiq's newest feature, iPhone It In, takes a look at one prominent iPhone game. If you're looking for something new to play on your phone this weekend, you absolutely can't go wrong with Edge, Rolando, Zen Bound, Sway or Fieldrunners. They're swell.

Well it is officially open. Just to test it out I decided to pick up the first paid Cydia App: Cyntact. The first thing you will notice after installing the new Cydia is Cyntact up there in changes. You'll also notice that the title and description is in the color blue instead of black like normal applications. This blue color indicated that it is a Cydia Store Application. That is the only difference you will see in the new Cydia as nothing else menu-wise has changed.
On to the buying. This process took me ages here the first time around. First I had to sign in with my google account, go through some steps to link the account, etc. Next was signing in with my amazon.com account and going through all the various steps (including remembering my password ) to buy the app. Finally I had purchased the app and was able to install it.

The AppStore has just reached 25,000 app mark but it seems that some of them might be disappearing. Though the AppStore was launched on 1st June last year, many developers signed up in March itself. According to people familiar with contact, Apple claims to give a renew option within ninety days before expiry date but it is yet to be provided, given expiry date is only a few days/ weeks away!
Contract renewal is not the only problem. Some developers even report that their contract application- deposited months ago- is yet to be approved. This is not the case for paid apps only. In fact, those developing free app, which require less of documentation are yet to get their contracts approved.

Who knew? I knew there were quite a few, but now we have a number: 6,135. Sure, thousands of them are carbon copies of one another, but there are a few gems. Rolando, anyone? For all you stats junkies, I'll also let you know that that there more than 20,400 total apps available for the iPhone and iPod touch. Meaning games take up a sizable 30% chunk of the pie. In fact, that's the biggest slice of the pie. Games, apparently, are king in the App Store. And since I still have gift cards burning a hole in my wallet, what are some of the best you've played lately?

iPhone lacks a physical keyboard. Many users have complained so far but Apple is firm about its decision on not to have one. As a result, some have come up with a mod to use iPhone with external keyboards.
Ubiqkcom has made a hack that enables use of Apple Wireless Keyboard to type on the iPhone! It is based on the Bluetooth stack developed by researchers at ETH Zurich.
It uses the device’s Bluetooth hardware to connect to the Bluetooth keyboard and does work with all the applications that use on-screen keyboard (umm.. all!). The best of all is the fact that you just need to jailbreak, no hardware mods necessary!
In the video, the iPhone is in airplane mode kept side-by-side with a wireless Apple keyboard, which confirms that the mod involves no use of the Wi-fi...

For the next 18 months poor Roney can not buy another iPhone. Why? Because Apple and AT&T suspect him of being a jailbreaker. After losing his iPhone Roney was willing to pay full price to buy a new one but was completely rejected. The new policy of one iPhone every 18 months went into effect just a couple short weeks ago around the time Apple started contending the legality of Jailbreaking.

The war between iPhone developers and app crackers continues
Ben Chatelain the developer behind the App Store app Full Screen Web Browser has taken steps to prevent piracy of his app. Just days after the initial app release on the App Store Ben received notification via a Google Alert that his app had been pirated and the cracked copy was being distributed by Appulo.
Frustrated by the events Ben went on a mission to stop cracking of Full Screen Web Browser (App Store link). He checked out informative posts about making an iPhone app crash if cracked but was hesitant to enable the measures because he didn't want the application to crash

Historically WWDC is held in mid March but if the prediction by The Baltimore Sun is correct WWDC could be moving to a date in June. This speculation is fueled by the Moscone Center events schedule which has a corporate meeting listed between June 6th and 12th.
Although completely unconfirmed it would make perfect sense that Apple would be moving to a June date. Apple has set the product cycle of the iPhone for the one year intervals and the next version has been officially announced around June for the past two years.
While we are expecting the new iPhone to be announced in June already Snow Leopard might also be coming out at WWDC. Although Snow Leopard appeared to have a release date of Quarter 1 2009

It was a nice dream. Sirius XM satellite radio on the iPhone via the App Store. Unfortunately after StarPlayr was submitted to the App Store it was never able to make it through (presumably some Sirius XM pressure was behind the denial). Now StarPlayr is officially done for good.
What have we learned? If you have something cool going on many different platforms and haven't had legal troubles from companies like Sirius XM then by all means DO NOT progress what you are doing to the iPhone. It appears that the move towards iPhone awesomeness caught a little bit too much attention (in the wrong way) from Sirius XM. StarPlayr has been enjoyed by many on their Macs and Windows Mobiles; further enjoyment by many more will never come to fruition.

Apple's just reached a whole new level of stupidity in App Store approval shenanigans: the Tweetie 1.3 update was just rejected for displaying "offensive language" in its Twitter trend search view. Right, not for offensive language in the app itself, but for offensive language on Twitter -- an insanely strict new standard that could conceivably be used to reject each and every iPhone Twitter client out there. (And if you haven't noticed, there are quite a few iPhone Twitter clients.) Hell, Apple might as well reject the next versions of Safari and Mail, since they can display dirty words too -- and let's not forget the awful things people are doing with Notes and the camera. Better lock it down.
Look, Apple -- this is a nadir. Rejecting a Twitter client for Twitter's content is simply indefensible, and it's a sign that the App Store approval "process" is broken beyond repair. It's time to drop the seemingly-random black-box approach -- which has earned nothing but well-deserved scorn -- open up, establish consistent, easy-to-understand rules with a well-defined appeals process, and actually work with innovative developers like Tweetie's Loren Brichter to push your platform forward in the face of newly-stiff competition. The massive popularity of the iPhone and the App Store may prevent a mass exodus, but the best devs are going to leave if they feel jerked around, and we doubt a store full of fart apps and misogynistic jiggle apps is really the vision you had for your platform. Think about it.

Android Dev Phone 1 owners are pretty much expected to handle their own business when it comes to firmware updates, but those of you who like to kick it official take note: El Goog's just released Android 1.1 for its totally unlocked version of the G1. Most of the fixes are to do with POP3 accounts, although paid apps are now supported with a catch: you won't be able to access any paid apps that use Android's hilariously weak-ass copy protection features, because the ADP1 comes rooted out of the box and thus able to read / write the folder protected apps are stored in. So yeah, ADP1 owners now have access to paid apps that don't have copy protection -- we're guessing that's not a large number. Honestly, we don't see the point of this: nothing's ever going to stop piracy, and pissing off the people willing to buy $400 unlocked phones that don't come with support doesn't seem like the best way to build brand loyalty. Maybe you want to reconsider, guys?

Bam, another Apple rumor vindicated. Apple just doubled the capacity of its iPod shuffle to 4GB while ditching the control wheel entirely. The new design keeps the clip and adds VoiceOver -- a new feature that gets around the lack of display by telling you which song is playing and who performs it at the touch of a button on the earbud cable. It'll also call out your playlists and let you navigate to others. Available in black or silver for $80 and your claim to what Apple calls the "world's smallest music player." Check the video tutorial after the break.
Update: VoiceOver in English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

he iPhone Dev Team hackers have been teasing their redsn0w iPod touch jailbreak for what seems like forever now, but those you tired of waiting might want to check out the just-released NitroKey Slipstream. The $15 software does its thing on the 2.2.1 firmware, and automatically installs Cydia for all that jailbroken app action you crave -- including the new paid apps store. Windows-only for now, but there's apparently a Mac version in the works -- hopefully we'll see the free redsn0w take the lead back on that front. Report back if you take the plunge, would you?

Developers can finally start cashing in on those farting and shopping apps.
Until now, all apps present on the 'store' - accessible only via the T-Mobile G1 so far - have been free.
From tomorrow developers will be able to start charging whatever they like. Users can pay via Google Checkout.
In previous reports Google has suggested that developers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France and Spain will be able to offer paid applications within the next few weeks.
At a London workshop held earlier today, T-Mobile and developers emphasised the differences between Android and iPhone - stressing the lack of editorial controls on developers, the ability to charge any cost, openness of the code and the speedy upoading process.
Other factoids divulged include:
* G1 sales are running at 70 per cent of average iPhone sales.
* 15 per cent of G1 users play with their device in the toilet.
* 20 per cent of new T-Mobile subs choose the G1.
* The devices mostly commonly migrated from are the N85 and Vario.
* G1 users spend five times more on data than the average T-Mobile sub

Nokia today announced the arrival of new Nokia Music Stores, more Comes With Music launches and three new music devices. The Nokia 5730 XpressMusic (as well as 5330 XpressMusic and 5030) bring people's music to life with features that give music lovers around the world easy access to the music they love. By expanding the music range to different price points, introducing more markets with Comes With Music service and the Nokia Music Store as well as making the integration of these elements as easy as possible, on both on the mobile device and the PC, Nokia is changing the way music is enjoyed. The digital music player that rings in your pocket is also the library, the shop and the platform to manage all your music.
"We've sold more than 425 million devices with a digital music player and more than 700 million devices with an FM radio, which clearly shows that the mobile phone is the natural device for listening to the music and carrying it with you," said Jo Harlow, Devices, Nokia. "Combining a connected digital music player like the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic with unlimited access to millions of tracks via Comes With Music means that in addition to their favourite tracks, music lovers can discover, experiment, and keep the new music they find."
Currently available in 15 markets across three continents, the Nokia Music Store lets people browse or purchase music, get recommendations or search for their favorite artists, songs or albums directly from their device. Nokia Music for PC software makes it easy to organise and transfer the music between a PC and compatible device, rip and burn CDs, as well as discover, stream and download directly from the Nokia Music Store. Today, Mexico was the latest country to launch a Nokia Music Store with additional markets such as Portugal, Norway and South Africa joining the fold in the coming months.
Comes With Music gives people unlimited music downloads from the Nokia Music Store for a year or 18 months. People can choose from millions of tracks to download and keep them, even once the year is over. Currently available in the United Kingdom and Singapore, Comes With Music will launch in Australia later this month. Additional launches, including Italy, Sweden and Mexico, are planned for the coming several months. The newest additions to the Nokia XpressMusic range - the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic and Nokia 5330 XpressMusic - will be offered as Comes With Music compatible devices in selected markets.
The Nokia 5730 XpressMusic is Nokia's first music-optimized device to offer a full QWERTY keyboard - ideal for quick messaging. The heart of this music device is the Homescreen for XpressMusic, providing access and dynamic information on music, people, games, email and calendar. The Homescreen features an improved contacts bar with up to 20 friends and family members and provides direct access to music, N-Gage and other applications, like Facebook, Photos, Ovi Contacts, Maps, messaging and more. With Ovi Contacts, people see which friends are online, chat and even view what music they are listening to. The Music shortcut offers a quick access to the music stored on the device as well as to the Nokia Music Store where they can find for information on artists, music and over-the-air downloads, directly on the device.
With the dedicated gaming keys the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic is a true N-Gage gadget. Direct access to the N-Gage Arena community and the preloaded N-Gage games invite to connect and compete and check high scores with online friends. Nokia also launched the Nokia Mobile Holder CR-110 to keep the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic firmly in place.
The Nokia 5730 XpressMusic is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2009 for an estimated retail price of 280 EUR before subsidies and taxes.

AndroidAndMe is running a bounty program for Android applications. Users can request a specific application and pledge money to be awarded to the developer who delivers the functional app. [Alec Holmes] just fulfilled the first request by creating Torrent Droid. You can use the app to scan media barcodes and then download the related torrent. It uses the phone’s camera to capture the product’s UPC barcode (similar to Compare Everywhere’s price lookup) and then searches major torrent sites like The Pirate Bay to find a copy that can be downloaded. After getting the .torrent file, the app can submit it to uTorrent’s web interface for remote downloading. The app will be released later this month and you can see a screenshot tour of it on Alec’s blog. It’s doubtful that an application like this would ever clear Apple’s App Store approval process.

Well, after weeks of speculations and false alarms, it looks like T-Mobile's officially saying the "Cupcake" Android update will hit the G1 sometime next month. That's at least the word according to the T-Mo spokeperson Pocket-lint got hold of -- who went out of his way to disclaim any connection with the upcoming launch of the HTC Magic. In any event, we're hoping all this bake time has fixed some of those bugs and lag problems, but we'll see in a few weeks.

The AppStore has been around a good while now. Cydia now has a retail aspect, which is being built out even more as you read this. And adding to the mix, Rock Your Phone, which we've been beta testing a while, is now live.
Rock Your Phone actually includes their own jailbreak (or soft unlock, as they've decided to coin it) software as part of the process - you'll notice the procedure is fairly similar to Pwnage Tool, but a little different, and branded Rock Your Phone. Some Dev Team help was actually put into building the application. Mario Ciabarra, creator of Rock Your Phone, says "Without the Dev Team's help, and the entire independent iPhone community - this wouldn't be possible - so we are very grateful for their help and dedication. We are intending to give back to the community as well."

My, my -- now isn't this something? Shortly after narrowly avoiding a dastardly collision with bankruptcy, Sirius XM is looking to connect itself with profitable enterprises in an attempt to build market share and regain interest from budget-conscience consumers. Just weeks after hearing that the sat radio company could be preparing a few Sirius / DirecTV bundles, CFO David Frear has now confirmed on a recent earnings call that the outfit is indeed developing an iPhone / iPod touch app. It's interesting to think that a satellite radio firm could be warming to delivering more content via the internet, but it's the apparent diversion from being a standalone offering that has us even more intrigued. It should be interesting to see how the pricing model works with this forthcoming app -- will users be able to get an iPhone subscription only? Will it be tossed in gratis with traditional subscriptions? So many questions, not enough patience.

A new survey from The Multimedia Research Company (TMRC) has identified the Apple iPhone as the platform that most impresses the mobile games industry, with 71 per cent of an expert panel labelling it the most successful development platform or operating system.
The panel, made up of 147 senior mobile industry executives from 136 companies in the sector, also believed that the iPhone would strengthen its position in the marketplace - although Google's Android platform is tipped to "make substantial advances in the market place over the next two years."
"We have long observed that the mobile games industry has not been short on individuals prepared to give their views on the wide range of issues challenging this space, either online, in print or at conferences," said TMRC MD Vic Whiting on the results of the inaugural survey.
"Well, the Mobile Games Industry Experts Panel is now able to give these opinions statistical solidity and reliability by measuring the industry sentiment of a large number of experts."

Apple wouldn't let you do it, but WinandMac found an app called iBluetooth for jailbroken iPhones that will allow you to send and receive files over Bluetooth. Just like a real phone!
There's really not much else to it. You can shoot files to and from Bluetooth devices, like other Bluetooth-enabled phones that aren't iPhones. If that's the one feature you've been waiting for, well, get to jailbreaking.

An Ohio mom is filing a lawsuit against Apple on behalf of her son, whose "iTouch" popped in his pocket and proceeded to torch his pants. He had to be treated for second degree burns on his leg, had a hole burnt through his pants pocket and got an underwear melting to top it all off. Also, according to the lawsuit, "He continues to suffer from both physical and mental conditions which will cause him to suffer pain, mental distress, emotional distress, and otherwise for the rest of his life." Poor kid! In addition to Apple, the lawsuit seemingly randomly names 10 Apple retail employees, and wants $150,000+ and attorney fees in damages. While we've seen a couple burnt charging cables of late, this is the first we've heard of an iPod touch "popping," and it's especially odd because the lawsuit claims the iPod was turned off at the time of the incident. Whether or not that's true, we'll be certainly keeping an eye on a trend developing here. When it comes to our children, burning pants are everyone's business.

With the promising intro of "when a shuffle kisses a Mac..." we were hoping for something a bit more exciting, but we suppose Dexim's new Shu-Lip will have to do. In completely straightforward and boring fashion, the Shu-Lip is designed to plug into the end of the new iPod shuffle and transform it from miniscule DAP to completely run-of-the-mill thumb drive, replacing that clunky audio-jack-to-USB dongle that the shuffle comes with. Naturally, with such short notice from Apple, it seems like Dexim merely has the renders and a price locked down so far -- the Shu-Lip will ship for $10 whenever it's ready.

he iPhone is a real gaming platform. Seriously. In fact, it's big enough to get its own version of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu. The debut issue covers new iPhone games: Metal Gear Solid: Touch, Resident Evil: Degeneration and Terminator Salvation. It also features a first look at Assassin's Creed.
Yes, the Apple handheld is getting its own version of Altair's adventure. According to Famitsu, the game will use an on-screen virtual pad for the controls. A video of an Assassin's Creed game for "high end phones" is available on YouTube (embedded after the break) and it looks very similar to the previously released DS game. We hope the iPhone version takes advantage of the platform's power -- maybe make it look more like a PSP game?

Already bored with Cupcake, are you? If your Nokia Internet Tablet needs just one more operating system to test out, we've excellent news to pass your way. Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) is primed and ready for installation on Nokia's N8x0 family of handhelds, which obviously includes the N800 and N810. It should be noted, however, that Usplash and audio aren't working at the moment, but everything else seems to be humming along just fine. If you're looking for the step-by-step guide of hooking your handheld up with a real-deal OS, give that read link a long look.

If the iPhone platform, which is already lauded for making it easier for small developers to create and publish games, isn't democratic enough for you, Gendai Games is attempting to open up iPhone game development (as well as development for other platforms like Facebook, and, in the future, game consoles like the Wii and DS) to everyone, whether you can program or not, with its GameSalad software. The free program allows users to create games using a visual, drag-and-drop interface, and easily move them to the iPhone for testing.
I spoke with Gendai's Michael Agustin about the software, which just went into open beta, and how the development platform will develop in the future.

Innerfence recently launched an app named Infinite SMS which allowed you to send unlimited SMS for free. The service used a free service from Google currently in "Experimental" stages - according to Google. The app soon reached the Top 10 list on AppStore and that's where the trouble started.
According to Google, they had to cut them off because of the app's HUGE popularity; stating they were unable to cope with the expenses. And being an experimental service, Google was not willing to bear the extra costs, so BOOM - they blocked the developer.
The developer doesn’t have much to say but they have tried to express their grief in just a few short sentences.

A flurry of news broke out over yesterday regarding the proprietary headphones required by Apple's new iPod shuffle, and now that Monday's here and everyone's back in the office, some things are starting to get cleared up. For starters, both Macworld and Boing Boing Gadgets have confirmed with Apple and various third-party vendors that the new shuffle headphones do in fact contain a proprietary control chip, and that would-be headphone makers have to pay to license it from Apple as part of the Made for iPod program. Yep, that's bad news, confirmed -- but all hope for inexpensive accessories isn't lost, as we're told that the chip isn't encrypted or otherwise locked down in any way, so it's easily cloned by companies who'd rather not pay. Still, eschewing Made for iPod certification pretty much dooms a product to niche status in the Apple universe, so it's a pretty weak consolation -- when this all shakes out, we're guessing only Apple-taxed headphones will be widely available for the shuffle, and that makes the value proposition somewhat hard to see. Just say no, people.

Digg's Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass -- you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that's great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won't have support for background apps -- which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone "up to speed with the Palm Pre" a little suspect.

Rumours suggest Apple will let publishers and developers sell more expensive titles.
According to a report on Wired, (which echoes a PocketGamer report from earlier in the year) 'the premium section would largely be focused on games, giving game makers a channel to offer more in-depth (and pricier) titles without getting lost in the clutter of free and $1 apps'. So far the App Store has been very popular with independent developers and smaller studios, but their games have all be released at sub-Ł10 price points. This 'velvet rope' area would make the digital download site more attractive to publishers that have been otherwise reluctant to invest in iPhone games due to lower margins.

Looks like that Bluetooth chip in the iPod touch 2G we've always thought was for Nike+ suddenly got a lot more useful: Apple's Greg Joswiak said that Bluetooth can be "unlocked" on the device during the iPhone OS 3.0 Q&A session. That's two years of rumors put to rest, right there, and a solid move, seeing as three of the major 3.0 features are A2DP, wireless accessory control and peer-to-peer connections over Bluetooth. Any touch owners feeling more inclined to drop the $9.95 now?

As promised, Apple just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0. Much of the news seemed developer-centric, but there are certainly plenty of consumer implications down the road, along with long-awaited functions like copy and paste, A2DP, MMS and universal Spotlight search. Improvements include:
App and developer functionality (more here)
Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor -- or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.
General functionality
Cut, copy and paste. At last! You can shake the phone to undo and redo the action, and it works with both text and photos, allowing Mail to send multiple photos at a time. (more here)
MMS, along with forward and delete for multiple messages. (more here)
A2DP stereo Bluetooth.
Unlocked Bluetooth functionality on 2G iPod touch. (more here)
Spotlight has been added to a new home screen page to the left of existing pages, allowing for universal search on the phone. (more here)
Tethering is built into 3.0, and Apple will work with carriers on that -- who will have the last say on its implementation, most likely.
App Store will be available in 77 countries.
Parental controls for TV shows, movies and App Store apps.
Auto-login for WiFi hotspots.
Apple apps
A new app called Voice Memos which lets you record notes and reminders.
A revised Stocks app, with news stories and a landscape view.
Landscape view available for Mail, Text and Notes.
CalDAV support has been added to Calendar, along with subscriptions support in the .ics format.
Apple's major apps have all been expanded with search functionality.
Note syncing to Mac and PC.
YouTube account support.
Form auto-fill.
Phishing protection.
Shake the shuffle iPod playback.
A developer beta of OS 3.0 is available today, and the 3.0 update will be coming to consumers this summer as a free update to all iPhone 3G customers. It'll also work for 1st gen iPhone owners, though they won't receive A2DP or MMS due to hardware limitations. iPod touch owners will be able to update for $9.95, just like last time.

Apple's making a big deal out of search on iPhone OS 3.0, and it's all being wrapped up in a new Spotlight search homescreen. A flick to the left from the first screen of apps brings it up, and from there you can search contacts, mail metadata (but not message content), calendars, media, and more. Definitely nice if you've ever struggled to quickly access something on the iPhone in the past, but again, we can't help but wonder why it took so long to get here.

Apple's done a decent job of implementing features that we've all been clamoring for into its forthcoming OS 3.0, and aside from copy and paste, there's probably no one single feature add bigger than this. You heard right -- multimedia messaging (MMS) is at long last coming to the iPhone 3G (sorry, first-gen iPhone owners) after years of dealing strictly with SMS. During the keynote, Apple was pretty remarkably short with details, simply noting that MMS "support" would be added. Frankly, we don't expect anything mind-blowing; it'll probably look a lot like the current SMS setup, and it'll definitely make AT&T happy when you start firing away picture messages without first subscribing to an unlimited messaging plan.
Update: Apple's official PR on the subject has given us just a bit more to chew on. We're told that MMS will enable iPhone 3G users to "send and receive photos, contacts, audio files and locations with the Messages app," hinting that Apple may just smash MMS and SMS together into a single 'Messages' app in OS 3.0. Also of note, owners will also be able to "forward and delete multiple messages."

No surprises here: Apple just announced that iPhone OS 3.0 will support copy and paste. A double-tap auto-selects the text you want with movable "grab points," and a pop-up edit bar display buttons for cut, copy, and paste. Finally! It works in every major app, including SMS and Safari, and what's more, there's also "shake to undo," which is exactly what it sounds like: a quick shake brings up a box that allows you to undo and redo c/p actions. It's a pretty nifty implementation, sure, but it's a little silly we've had to wait this long for it, don't you think?

Apple has announced that it has added over 1,000 new API functions to the iPhone SDK in version 3.0 -- peer-to-peer connectivity and Bonjour support, among other goodies -- in addition to a subscription sales model and in-app purchases (great for optional content like game levels and city guides, we'd imagine). Devs will also be able to interface hardware accessories and Google Maps directly to their applications, which should be a big win for location-based stuff. What's more, the long, long overdue push notification functionality will finally be ready to roll, though it seems like there isn't much (if any) change from what was supposed to launch last year. App authors still have a lot more to read up on, though, because they've also added access to the device's iPod library, streaming media calls, and in-game voice -- another huge step toward making the iPhone a world-class gaming platform. One thing Apple's notable holding the line on is background apps; they're saying the same thing about battery life issues that they've said before, but at least we'll still be getting some push out of the deal. We're also going to be seeing support for in-app email access and text selection -- don't see a lot of that on an iPhone these days, now do you? A beta version of the updated firmware and SDK will be available to members of Apple's iPhone Developer program starting today, which should give 'em a nice head start on taking advantage of the new features.

As soon as Apple rolled out its preview of iPhone OS 3.0, the comparisons to existing (and forthcoming) mobile OSs started flying. While the major update isn't exactly a done deal, it's pretty far along, and we've been able to glean quite a bit from our time with the developer beta we've been checking out. iPhone OS, Android, webOS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, S60; if you're in the market for a new smartphone, your choices have been getting exponentially more complicated lately, and 3.0 won't make the selection any easier. Luckily for you, Engadget is here to make sense of a frightening and uncertain landscape. Read on for an in-depth look at the similarities -- and differences -- between modern mobile operating systems.

Remember that Android handset from Samsung (pictured) apparently leaked on Tuesday? Well, according to DigiTimes' "market sources," we won't be seeing hide nor fuzzy hair from any Android handset touting Samsung DNA prior to July. DigiTimes goes on to say that Samsung will be the first of the "top-five handset makers" to rollout Android -- a reference to Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson's efforts, presumably. Interesting since we had expected LG's first Android device in June and Moto's first effort as early as Q2. Guess it's your game for the taking HTC.

SwitchEasy's ThumbTacks are far from being the first third-party microphones designed to function nicely with Apple's iPod nano 4G and second-generation iPod touch, but we'll be darned if they aren't the cutest. Clearly designed to mimic the iconic thumb tack, these itty-bitty microphones function with all third-party voice applications and can be selected in black, white or red. Not too shabby for $15.99 shipped, wouldn't you say?

Apple touted quite a few new iPhone features at yesterday's OS 3.0 event, but now that the beta build is trickling out, there's been a bevy of unearthed discoveries to further pique our interests. First up, the gang at Boy Genius Report found an option to enable the "Find My iPhone" service in the MobileMe settings. Unfortunately, that's all we've got, but we wouldn't put it past Cupertino to build some me.com-linked location tracker that'd be the envy of Orwell himself -- hey, that'd be pretty useful if you accidentally left the mobile in a taxi. Also in the MobileMe section, it now says Publish Video when you go to publish an image. It's an odd typo, to be sure, and while video recording has been near the top of our wishlist for some time, we're not about to get our hopes up. Finally, Mac Rumors is reporting that a hacker has dug up and successfully activated the USB tethering capabilities. Apple's Scott Forstall had mentioned the devs were building it in, but were still in talks with the carriers. As to whether any or all of these functions will actually end up in the final OS 3.0 build, your guess is a good as ours. For now, check out more pics of the MobileMe additions after the break.

For existing AT&T subscribers looking to get a new handset for a few months before they make that inevitable Pre / iPhone 3.0 / Gizmondo decision this summer -- or folks who just despise contracts in general -- it looks like AT&T will be offering unsubsidized iPhone 3Gs at last. According to some training slides obtained by The Boy Genius, the "no-commit" price will only be available to existing customers, and will run them $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB. Sounds like somebody's looking to flush a bit of stock, or perhaps they've finally decided to almost treat the phone like pretty much every single other device on the market -- wild times we're living in, folks. The no-commit option should be available as of March 26th.

Apple has previewed the iPhone's latest operating system, which will allow the device to support in-game downloadable content and greater multiplayer functions.
The in-app commerce support will allow users to buy major content updates from within an application already installed on their phone, rather than having to buy a separate app for significant modifications.
In addition, the iPhone will now support peer-to-peer connections, allowing for greater multiplayer capabilities, and a new 'push' function, which lets applications deliver alerts to users. The alerts, similar to SMS, would allow multiplayer invitations and an option to start the app directly from the push message.
"The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike. It will keep us years ahead of the competition," commented Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
The beta version of the new software and SDK is available for registered developers to download. iPhone customers will receive the update for free upon its release later this summer, while iPod touch users will have to purchase the update for USD 9.95.
Apple's share price hit USD 99.66, up 4.44 per cent from the previous close at USD 95.42.

Casual game network questions value of 'hits driven' store.
Sidney Mock, the CCO of the world’s leading casual games network SPIL Games, has stated that whilst the world and its dog if clamouring to get its content onto the Apple App Store, SPIL doesn’t necessarily see it as the right space for its content.
“Like everyone, we are looking iPhone and the App store,” Mock stated in Part Two of ME sister site CasualGaming’biz’s three-part interview. “The App Store is a great success, but it’s increasingly built on hits, and I’m not sure if we want to be in a hits driven marketplace.
“There are companies who are very good at leveraging this method, but we’re good at other things. I like the iPhone, and iPhone users are over-performing on mobile internet use. The majority of phones have poor internet browsers, and we want to target the mass market, so we need to tackle that.”

While many happy iPhone developers are eager to tout Apple's device as the hot ticket in video games, one Sony executive isn't worried. Peter Dille, Senior VP of Marketing, told GameDaily BIZ that he believes that the iPhone gaming market is "a separate business" from traditional handheld gaming.
"Consumers that want to carry a PSP are primarily gamers and I think there's a big difference in the types of games you can play on a PSP versus an iPhone," Dille said. "The iPhone games and apps are largely diversionary, whereas we're a gaming company and we make games for people who want to carry a gaming device and play a game that offers a satisfying 20+ hours of gameplay."
Dille also noted the PSP's reduced reliance on digital distribution, noting that the PSP is "a wi-fi device, not an always connected device. So there's going to be limitations based on the current technology in the PSP." He then added, " ... but you never say never, and as we roll out new products in the future we'll keep an eye on consumer trends as we always do," suggesting that one of the features that he had just mentioned as separating the two systems could go away.

It's certainly not the experience Metal Gear Solid fans are probably expecting, but Metal Gear Solid Touch released today on the iTunes App Store for $7.99 on iPhone and iPod Touch. MGS Touch covers the events of MGS4, with players assuming the role of Solid Old Snake, in what amounts to a screen-tapping shooting gallery.
The game features 20 levels and has the cloned protagonist fighting all the characters you've come to know from MGS4 -- minus the 45-minute cutscenes. We should have our review of the app up soon

In middle of all the adding features that should have been available day-one, Apple announced something really interesting for the hardware hacking community. The new iPhone 3.0 OS will support application communication over bluetooth or through the dock connector using standard or custom protocols. From Engadget’s coverage:
10:19AM “They talk over the dock, and wirelessly over Bluetooth. Things like playing and pausing music, getting artwork — or you can build your own custom protocols.”
10:19AM “Now here’s a class that we think will be really interesting — medical devices.” Scott’s showing off a blood pressure reader that interfaces with the iPhone — wild.
10:18AM “Here’s an example — an FM transmitter. With 3.0, the dev can build a custom app that pairs up with it, and automatically finds the right station and tunes it in.”
10:18AM “With 3.0, we’re going to enable accessory developers to build custom apps that talk directly to that hardware.”
No solid connection specification has been published yet. We’re excited about the prospect of developing our own accessory hardware, but we wonder what sort of hoops you’ll have to jump through. Apple doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to approvals. Just this week they denied MSA Remote client App Store entry; it’s a multitouch client that uses the standard TUIO protocol. Prepare for similar roadblocks in the future.

It's just one more screen shot, but it gives us a bit of a better look at the upcoming wifi-enabled, multiplayer iPhone shooter coming from ngmoco.
The game is also playable over 3G networks and will feature global game servers, according to the publisher. Touch anywhere controls let you use the left side of the screen to move around. You can tap the center of the screen to zoom and shake to jump.
The game also includes a feature called Call to Help, which allows you to bring up a friend's list in game and send a push notification to join the server.
As mentioned before, the game will also include an in-game store which allows you to purchase weapons while playing for real cash. The example shown during the demo was a rocket launcher for $.99. Please tell me they won't be selling single weapons for a buck. That's sort of insane.
No word yet on when LiveFire will be coming out.
You can see the game in action if you check out the full Apple presentation. Skip to 54 minutes in to check it out.

oking for a weekend DIY project? Using a 26-key ButtonShield keyboard module and salvaging parts from his Open Source GameBoy project, Liquidware Antipasto blogger intheblitz has created the OpenBerry, a Arduino-based mobile messenger that's maybe one-half part BlackBerry and seven parts great icebreaker at parties (the kind of parties we go to, at least). Right now the functionality is minimal -- it sends and receives messages synced to your laptop via a XBee module. The interface is also lacking, but a GUI is in apparently the works. See the device for yourself in the video after the break.

Is there a better way to ring in the first day of spring than with another lawsuit aimed at Apple and AT&T? Probably, but apparently not for Damone Dickerson, who has filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey that again takes aim at the pair over allegedly misleading claims about 3G speeds. According to Dickerson, he has only be able to connect to the 3G network a "fraction of the time," and when he was able to connect it did not provide "full and continual service." As a result, he's leveled a whole host of charges against the two companies, which he hopes will result in them changing their advertising and, of course, allow him to "recover compensatory, statutory and punitive damages." No word from Apple or AT&T, naturally, but Apple has recently asked that a similar case in New York be dismissed.

Hot off word that Apple's Mac and iPod sales for February took a 16 percent hit compared to last year, Steve Ballmer says the "tide has really turned" after recent Apple market share gains: "Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction. The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." Of course, PC sales have been hit as well, but the numbers do point to Apple's market share slipping of late. Of course, he's not exactly complementing the masses when he says that people were paying $500 more a fruit logo. Maybe, just maybe design and software had something to do with it? Just something to think about, while you roll around in piles of cash and a dominant market share, Steve.

We'd already heard that evidence of a new iPhone model was found buried in newer firmwares, but how about two new iPhone models -- along with a couple new iPod touches thrown in for good measure? It seems that a careful deconstruction of the beta 3.0 build provided to developers this week has uncovered the same product code "iPhone2,1" found before in addition to an even newer, awesomer "iPhone3,0." For the record, the iPhone 3G is identified as "iPhone1,2," so these alleged new models would be the first in the iPhone line to be blessed with major version number increments. Turning our attention to the iPod touch, the current model carries the "iPod2,1" designation, but models "iPod2,2" and "iPod3,1" have both been rooted out of the binary. June is widely speculated as the time that we'd be seeing new iPhone models -- right about the time that 3.0 is released to the general public -- so we don't have terribly long to wait to get this sorted out.

Even after iPhone 3G was launched, internet speeds still remained an issue for many. Silicon Alley Insider claims that the next iPhone will have a "significantly faster Internet connection". It's unclear whether the statement refers to Wi-fi or 3G network.
At least we're quite sure that iPhone wont be shifting to 4G as even the current 3G network is far from perfect. Based on the statement, they have made some wild guesses.
Quote:
* This can't be referring to AT&T's 4G (LTE) network, because that won't be ready for a year or more.
* This might be referring to faster wifi, and not faster 3G access? (802.11n vs. its current 802.11g/b.)
* AT&T has repeatedly vowed to speed up its

Apple's procedure for the AppStore approval has always been cumbersome. Many great apps have been rejected for useless reasons, many useless apps got accepted as well and many were totally ignored. The current procedure has left many good companies gaping. FreedomVoice is no exception!
The story of FreedomVoice urges me to wonder if Apple is actually approving apps by trial and error? The company submitted an app named newber about half a year ago but it is yet to be approved! According to them, all Apple guidelines were followed while making the app- leaving no errors. The app transfers an on-going call to another phone with out dropping the call.

An Australian Magazine reports that Apple has entered into a multi-billion dollar deal with LG to supply OLED screens for future use.

It’s also believed that a new iPhone and iPod Touch due later this year will include an OLED screen made by LG who last year scored a multibillion dollar deal to manufacture display screens for Apple.
Apple currently uses the LED screen which sucks a lot of battery as well compared to OLED which requires no backlight. This would be a really nice move to counter the iPhone 3G battery issues. It would also help with the new 3.0 battery consuming features such as PUSH notification.

For whatever reason, Apple's iPod ends up in the middle of quite a few crimes. The latest story, however, is even more extreme than usual. Nicholas Arthur Woodhams, a 23 year old from Kalamazoo, Michigan, was recently slapped upside the gord with federal charges of fraud and money laundering after he managed to con Apple into shipping him around 9,000 iPod shuffles. As the story goes, he managed to somehow correctly guess thousands of valid shuffle serial numbers and have replacements shipped to him; once they arrived, he sold them for less than MSRP to excited buyers, all while giving Apple a prepaid VISA number that would reject the charges after he failed to send back the nonexistent "original" shuffle. It's rather amazing to us that he was able to pull this off for so long without being noticed, but even if it works for awhile, we've learned yet again that crime doesn't pay. In fact, the feds have already seized a half million bucks from one brokerage account, some real estate and a trio of vehicles. Tragic, yeah?

Mali-400 processors offer Xbox 360 style graphics in the palm of your hand, says graphics product manager of ARM
Cor. I remember when playing colour Solitaire on my phone was cutting edge, but if you believe the words of Remi Pederson, a graphics product manager at ARM, we could be enjoying Xbox 360 style visuals from our mobile screens by the end of 2009.
Given that Xbox 360s are prone to overheating and dying a horrible death (mine shuffled off its mortal coil for a second time this weekend), does this mean we're all going to be heading to the burn ward after an extended commute? Probably not. You see, although the visuals will look similar to the 360's, they'll actually be closer to original Xbox in output.
This amazing technological feat will be accomplished via the new range of Mali chips. The first generation Mali is already in use in LG's Renoir phone, which runs Flash without shader capabilities, and should be able to use up to 16x anti-aliasing. It runs OpenGL ES - the same as the iPhone to give you some perspective.
In a few months time, we'll see Mali-200 processors emerging, which will support OpenGL ES 2.0. That 2.0 at the end makes a huge difference: it's completely shader based, removes cluttered code while keeping vertex and pixel shaders. It'll run 16 million triangles per second and 275 million pixels per second.
Then at the end of the year, we'll see the Mali-400 which is similar, but multicore scalable, all the way from a single core 100Mhz to quad-core 300Mhz. It can even produce resolutions of 1080p.
If you've managed to sit through all that number crunching technical talk, here's your reward. Penderson goes on to say that at the Game Developers' Conference in San Francisco, you'll be able to see a port of the original Xbox Project Gotham Racer running in OpenGL ES. I'll leave him with the final word, and you can judge for yourself how realistic this is: "Performance-wise, it runs like the original Xbox, but feature-wise it looks like an Xbox 360 title."

If Apple is ever looking for a cheerleader for the iPhone, it needs to hire Neil Young, stat. In addition to having the same name as a rocker, he's extremely pumped about the gaming possibilities of the portable platform. He jumped ship from EA last year, and is now at ngmoco and loving all things iPhone.
He announced the two upcoming sequels for Rolando, coming later this year (along with free updates and new worlds/levels). All told, by November 2009, ngmoco will have released three Rolandos, with "12 worlds, 148 levels, and 40 hours of gameplay." He also touted the fact that the company has raised $10 million dollars in new venture capital funding, showed off some video from the upcoming iPhone tower defense game, Star Defense, and waxed poetic about the rise of gaming on everyones favorite finger-smudge magnet. Check out the highlights, along with the video, after the break.

Rumor has it that AT&T's gearing up for yet another door-busting, riot-inducing summer filled with new iPhone hardware, which would certainly jibe with everything we've heard in the past few months (never mind the fact that June is officially Apple's iPhone release cycle these days, and indeed, AT&T's apparently saying that the June cycle is becoming "a tradition"). That's not terribly interesting at this point -- what is interesting, though, is how AT&T plans to play it. Apparently, the carrier wants to ramp up its -- ah, how should we put this in a politically correct way -- "integration" with Apple's hardware, including a U-verse app that we're guessing will approximate the functionality to be offered by Verizon's FiOS. What really has us worried is not so much the U-verse app specifically, but the possibility that AT&T's sick and tired of having its crapware left out of its highest-profile device, leading to non-removable garbage like Cellular Video on a future iPhone's home screen. It's still a bit early to sound the alarm there, but you know, we're paranoid types around here. It's said the new device will be faster, though the exact meaning of that is a little unclear; the iPhone 3G's chipset is already 7.2Mbps-capable, so we're not sure if the carrier is simply referring to its ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Finally, it's said that a $99 netbook running something other than Windows (don't suppose that'd be Linux?) will be launching this summer, following on the 3G-enabled Aspire One that hit Radio Shack late last year. Heads up, though, AT&T: give us an iPhone with your Mobile Email app on the home screen, and let's just say we can't be held accountable for our actions afterwards. We know you wouldn't do that, but just sayin'.

You may have seen some reports today about a new app from Ripdev called InstallerApp, which some people have mistakenly been covering as a desktop client that lets you install Cydia and Installer apps without having to jailbreak your iPhone using something like PwnageTool. Just to set the record straight, here's the deal: InstallerApp is a kind of jailbreaking tool (let's call it "jailbreaking lite") coupled with a separate application management client for your computer. From what we can tell, the first thing it does is jailbreak your device (or, if you're already jailbroken, installs some additional software so it can talk to your phone). In no way is it allowing you to install non-Apple-approved apps onto a non-jailbroken phone: it's tweaking your underlying system to allow for those apps to run, and giving you an iTunes replacement to add and delete programs on your device. Keep in mind, RipDev is charging $7 for this, which isn't a bundle, but not free either... unlike PwnageTool and QuickPwn, which essentially do the same thing (minus the desktop client). We're not saying it's not a useful app -- it might be to some -- it just isn't the "get out of jail free" solution that you may have heard it is. And now you know... which is half the battle.

f you've ever thought that the iPhone might be a lawsuit magnet, we now have even more proof for you. It looks like a company called MONEC Holding Ltd., based in Berne, is suing Apple for patent infringement, unfair trade practices, monopolization, and tortious interference (whatever that means). MONEC's January, 2002 patent (No. 6,335,678 -- titled "Electronic device, preferably an electronic book") describes a light-weight, touchscreen electronic device that has the "dimensions such that [...] approximately one page of a book can be illustrated at normal size, this display being integrated in a flat, frame-like housing." Doesn't sound like every handheld device out there, does it? We'll keep you posted.

Publisher EA has seemingly nailed its flag to the iPhone mast with the news that a number of its key gaming franchises are heading to the platform this year.
Edge reports that snowboarding franchise SSX, the return of which was hinted at in the in-game commentary of 2008 racer Burnout Paradise, will be leading the charge. Other titles on the way to the platform include Command & Conquer: Red Alert, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live, The Sims, Need for Speed and Spore.
All titles are expected to be released in 2009.

600,000 mobile gamers have signed up since October.
The N-Gage Arena mobile games community now has one million members, up from 400,000 in October.
Reuters reports on the landmark, which Nokia attributes to the fact it has been embedding the N-Gage service in new handsets, thus boosting end-user uptake.
Yesterday Nokia said it won't be making its N-Gage games service available to owners of its popular N73 handset.
And earlier this month the company intimated it would be keeping N-Gage service separate from its Ovi app store for the foreseeable future.

For many aging (sorry folks, it’s true) PC gamers, Wolfenstein 3D was one of the first truly compelling computer action games. Doom also fits into the same category, but Wolf3D was the grand daddy of it first-person shooters.
ZoomNow, 18 years since its release on 286 computers in 1991, Wolfenstein 3D has been ported to the iPhone by its original creator John Carmack.
Carmack has made it no secret that he wanted to have an iPhone game for launch of the 3G model and 2.0 firmware in July 2008. Due to time constraints, that never happened, but Carmack never stopped looking at the Apple device as a viable gaming platform. Of course, it also helps that he owns an iPhone.
“I had been frustrated for over a year with the fact that we didn't have any iPhone development projects going internally at Id. I love my iPhone, and I think the App Store is an extremely important model for the software business,” he said.
Electronic Arts was set to bring mobile game Wolfenstein RPG to the iPhone, but Carmack explained that he was unhappy with the software renderer that an EA team came up with.
“Using the iPhone's hardware 3D acceleration was a requirement, and it should be easy,” Carmack explained, and later continued, “The developers came back and said it would take two months and exceed their budget.”
“Rather than having a big confrontation over the issue, I told them to just send the project to me and I would do it myself,” said Carmack, going on to prove that he’s more than just a cut above the rest. “Cass Everitt had been doing some personal work on the iPhone, so he helped me get everything set up for local iPhone development here, which is a lot more tortuous than you would expect from an Apple product. As usual, my off the cuff estimate of ‘Two days!’ was optimistic, but I did get it done in four, and the game is definitely more pleasant at 8x the frame rate. And I had fun doing it.”
The id Software lead programmer then went on to apply his work to Wolf3D Redux, an upgraded “true 3D” version of his original built off the source code. The result we have today is an ‘official’ port of Wolfenstein 3D done by the series’ original creator, made for the iPhone.
You won’t find the it on the Apple App Store, however, as Carmack released it as a simple package for jailbroken iPhones. Also included is the source code, and Carmack encourages other able programmers to see if they can improve upon his work.
While the Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone is very faithful to the original of 18 years ago, there have been several changes -- not only to stay better in tune with modern gamers, but also for reasons surrounding the radically different hardware and input method. For one, the “open door” button has been done away with in favor of automatic doors. Ah, technology. The UI has been tweaked for the iPhone screen as well as the addition of an auto map, so that new players wouldn’t feel as if they were lost in a maze. Both lives and scores were also taken out, now replaced with “achievements” for 100 percent kills, 100 percent secrets and 100 percent treasures.
Check out Voodoo Extreme for the full 5,100 word release document from John Carmack detailing almost everything you could imagine. Download the iPhone port and source here, though it’s reserved for those who are knowledgeable about poking around an jailbroken iPhone.
Perhaps the best news of all is that this won’t be a one-off thing. Carmack said that if there is enough interest in this port, he shall make available the entire Spear of Destiny expansion. And even better, we’ll be getting Doom.
Carmack said in closing, “I'm going back to Rage for a while, but I do expect Classic Doom to come fairly soon for the iPhone.”

The fine folks at BSQUARE have announced that they'll be porting Adobe Flash to Google's Android on behalf of a "global Tier 1 carrier." Whether or not that implies this "global Tier 1 carrier" will have exclusive access to Flash out of the gate remains to be seen. Details are otherwise very scarce, and it's unclear how this relates to the demo of Flash Andy Rubin showed off at Adobe MAX last year. However, BSQUARE bought NEC's Adobe® Flash® Technology Consulting and Distribution business 12 months ago, and has done Android work for other customers, so the expertise should certainly be there -- and naturally we wouldn't expect them to go shouting about this if they didn't have Adobe and Google's blessing in one form or another.

ID Software released the ever popular Wolfenstein 3D Classic for iPhone on the App Store on the 23rd of March for the price tag of $5. Now just two short days later Zodttd has released the exact same game on Cydia for $0. Yes when I say exact same game I really mean it is the SAME game.
The game is published by ID Software under a General Public License (GPL). If you check out the ID Software's Wolfenstein site you can grab the source for download in the bottom right corner. Zodttd simply downloaded the source, compiled, and published to Cydia

via Eurogamer
Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi revealed that he's working on an iPhone extension of his PSN game Noby Noby Boy at his Game Developers Conference talk today.
He showed the game running on his own phone, holding it up to a camera so the audience could see. It features a multi-touch control scheme, with the player manipulating each end of the stretchy BOY character - represented in 2D - with a different finger.
He moved the BOY around, displacing floating letters of the game's name as he did so.
"We just started doing this a week ago," he told the audience, and said that it might be a free application.
He hopes to be able to plug the game into the PSN version. In Noby Noby Boy, the cumulative stretching done by all players contributes to the length of GIRL as she tries to reach all the planets in the solar system.
The problem is that, if GIRL keeps growing at the current rate, it will take 820 years for her to span the solar system, due to Noby Noby Boy's poor sales.
"I thought it would be neat if we can use the BOY from the iPhone and communicate to the girl, maybe that would make the girl reach the solar system in 400 years instead of 820," Takahashi joked.
Takahashi also showed the forthcoming multiplayer update to Noby Noby Boy, which he hopes to release "probably in the latter part of April". He let members of the audience play it on screens while he talked.
It's an offline mode that allows up to four players to control BOYs simulataneously. If two BOYs break in two, they can then combine to create a BOY where each end is controlled by a different player.
Takahashi charmed and confused the pants off the audience at his typically off-the-wall GDC talk. We'll publish more from the eccentric creator later.

f you're a fan of TealOS (you know, that fairly striking webOS-aping launcher for Palm devices), you're in for some bad news. According to a post on the company's TealTalk support forum, a rep tells users that Palm has issued a takedown of the lookalike. In their words:
I'm sorry to say that at Palm's request, as of this upcoming Monday, March 30, we will no longer be selling or distributing TealOS.
While we can certainly understand the motivations on Palm's part behind wanting to scuttle this copycat, we do find it a little odd. When we met with a Palm rep to retrieve the Pre earlier in the month, he actually had the software installed on his phone and seemed pretty excited about its existence. Our money here is actually on Palm's legal department being a bit hair-trigger, though we hardly think TealOS is posing a threat to the company's bottom line. Bottom line? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

At long last folks with a contract phobia or just a general penchant for lawlessness can pay exorbitant amounts of money to get an iPhone 3G contract-free. As promised, 8GB models for $599 and 16GB ones for $699 are now available from AT&T and Apple stores, with AT&T requiring buyers to be existing AT&T customers, limited at one per, while Apple stores will sell the handsets to anyone wandering in off the street -- rebellious demeanor preferred.

Mythic's creative director, Paul Barnett, believes that new digital platforms, including the iPhone, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare and Flash-based products, have enabled the games industry to break free from the restrictions brought about by an obsession with hardware.
Speaking in a session at GDC, Barnett praised the breadth of possibilities, hailing it as the start of a new "golden age" that promoted game design above all else.
"What happened was robbing people of keyboards," he said, according to Gamasutra. "What happened was the loss of homebrew games. Games suddenly required huge teams, a long time to percolate.
"For the longest time, we've been gripped by this love of hardware. It didn't really matter what the games were; hardware was king. We lost our love affair with making things wondrous.
"A miracle has happened, it really has. And it's a wondrous, wondrous miracle. When no one was looking... We got free of these chains.
"We have the iPhone. We have mobile phones. We have WiiWare. We have Flash games. We have Java. We have XBLA. For the first time ever, two people in a bedroom can change their lives doing nothing more than just using design.
"Audiosurf, World of Goo, Braid - all these things have become possible and it's because when no one was looking and against all the odds, we found another golden age."
He also praised new digital distribution platforms, noting that it made simpler games more acceptable.
"There's no uncanny valley in chess. Tetris does not need to be 3D. Games can once again shake up the world."
Barnett has had a lead role in the development of EA's Warhammer Online MMO, which was launched last year.

Uh oh Apple -- it looks like even your attorneys are dirty, thieving jailbreakers. Tipster a|e§ was poring through that iPhone biometric security patent application we posted earlier and noticed that the images show a jailbroken phone, complete with Installer.app, SMBPrefs, and the iWood Realize theme from the iSpazio repository. We're guessing the fine folks at Kramer, Levin Naftalis & Frankel are going to have some 'splainin to do on Monday morning -- but at least they get to run apps in the background.

Recent patent fillings by Apple that AppleInsider has dug up point to the company adding several new methods of insuring the security of its devices for users. The new filings cite biometric authentication methods that would excite Ethan Hunt -- including installation of a hidden sensor behind the screen that would recognize the user's fingerprint when touched, and / or a front-facing camera for retinal recognition. The filing also suggests further possibilities, such as the device being capable of recognizing the user's voice, or collecting DNA samples for recognition via genetic code. We've heard plenty of semi-speculative tech tales in the past, so we always take this stuff with a grain of salt, but Apple seems to be moving forward at least into the research phase of such endeavors. To the future we go! There's one more fantastic scribble after the break, hit the read link for more details.

AT&T recently started selling contract free iPhone at their stores country-wide. Now, it seems that Apple has joined them as well! The prices for unsubsidized iPhones are $599 for 8GB model and $699 for 16GB model, the best part being no quantity limits like the AT&T store (and a better staff)!
This also means no in-store activation. Though the phone is still technically locked to AT&T, it can be unlocked (think yellowsn0w ).
This move by Apple and AT&T seems to be a great move to clear the inventories and make space for the expected new iPhone models that might be announced at the upcoming WWDC,

Back at MacWorld, we chatted with the guys over at SlingMedia about their upcoming plans for an iPhone release of their SlingPlayer.
They've just announced they've submitted the app to the AppStore, and we're all now just waiting for approval. We've learned by now that Apple's approval process is about as predictable as the next episode of LOST, but here's hoping the app will be approved within the week or so.
I know I've been excited about shredding through some 3G network to catch up on 24 while I'm away from home.
For those of you who don't know - SlingMedia retails the SlingBox, a device which lets you watch your DVR and cable TV from any browser on supported platforms (including OS X and Windows, sure) and many smart phones as well.

You know what'll be awesome? Actual end products resulting from this presumably nonstop research on piezoelectric nanowires. Yet again we're hearing of a new group of researchers that have figured out a way to harness electricity from life's simplest things: walking, a heart beating or even the flowing of blood. Put simply, the gurus have discovered how to use zinc oxide nanowires in order to generate an electric current when "subjected to mechanical stress." The difference here, however, is that these critters could actually be implanted under the skin, though the scientists have made quite clear that there isn't a timetable for commercial production. In other words: yawn.

When they said "Tuesday," they meant it. Not long ago, the clock struck midnight in the Land of the Rising Sun, and sure enough, the bona fide Skype application (v1.0.0.63) for Apple's iPhone has gone live. It's absolutely free to download, and early reports from Japan have been pretty stellar in regard to sound quality. We're fully expecting it to roll out elsewhere as Tuesday (March 31st) arrives in various time zones, so make sure you (and at least one Skype buddy) stay up late to try 'er out.

Nokia's N-Gage has been labelled a "fading star" by a panel of 147 senior mobile games executives, who said that a number of mobile platforms would have to move fast to avoid obsolescence against Apple's iPhone and Google's Android.
Approximately 48 per cent of the panel, brought together by the Multimedia Research Consultancy, voted the N-Gage negatively, with a further 22 per cent voting that Java is "unlikely to be around in five years time", while only 15 per cent thought that the Palm was "here to stay".
"Some of the scores attained by individual developer platforms and operating systems were nothing short of dismal and will raise alarm bells amongst their management teams," commented Vic Whiting, MD of the Multimedia Research Consultancy.
"We acknowledge that these results represent industry sentiment at a particular point in time and we do not expect rival developer platforms and operating systems to simply lie down and die," he said.
"However, they will all have to raise their games quickly and forcefully if they are to counter the momentum and impact being achieved by the likes of Apple's iPhone and Google's Android."
