It may not extend its reach into as many rooms as some iPod sound systems, but Chestnut Hill Sound's upcoming "George" unit looks to at least one up Apple's own Hi-Fi in the functionality (and price) department. Set to come in at a cool $550 next month, George will handle both iPod playback and AM/FM radio duties, each controllable though the detachable wireless remote, which has its own LCD display and range of controls (check it out up close after the break). What's more, the system uses the ZigBee wireless protocol (good for up to 25 feet), which would seem to open up some home automation possibilities, although Chestnut Hill only goes so far as to hint at it, mentioning that George "improves and expands to fit your life." Maybe they'll be willing to spill a few more details when George makes its official debut later this month at CES.

Microsoft is being sued by French developer In-Fusio, which alleges the Redmond giant is wrongfully seeking to terminate a US $2 million (EUR 1.5m) mobile gaming deal.
In-Fusio claims Microsoft has refused to approve its game designs, leading the mobile developer to withhold the second of four US $500,000 (EUR 376,000) payments. Microsoft is citing this lack of payment as justification for ending the agreement.
Last September, In-Fusio announced a deal to bring Halo content to mobile phones, beginning with wallpapers and ringtones, with the recent lawsuit describing the services as a prelude to a full mobile game.
However, the developer now believes the Xbox manufacturer has purposefully ignored efforts to create a title, stating in the suit: "Microsoft has thwarted In-Fusio's efforts to develop Halo under the agreement."
The suit continues: "Indeed, in the last 11 months, Microsoft has approved no fully developed In-Fusio game designs; ignoring and then refusing to accept In-Fusio's game design concepts with little or no explanation and leaving In-Fusio little basis to revise its concepts to obtain Microsoft's approval."
In-Fusio is seeking damages and an injunction on Microsoft.

Sure, you could load up a flash drive with diagnostic, anti-virus, and data recovery software to fix up a sick computer, but it's kind of boring. If you've got an old iPod kicking around you might as well turn it into the hippest computer recovery tool around.
TechTool Protogo is a suite of diagnostic tools for your Mac designed to be loaded up on an iPod. I would be all about getting this on my old 10GB 2nd gen except for two small problems: I have a PC, and it's a whopping $150 for the software. Someone out there has got to be able to whip up a suite like this that's all freeware and can have the same iPod functionality. Let's see it, dudes.

Industry shows are interesting beasts to witness. Frequently, we get clues about the future of gaming simply by looking at who decides to show up. There is one big surprise listing at the 2007 CES.
According to the CES website, "It's all fun and games for AMD, Apex Digital, ATI, Dell, Logitech, Nvidia, Alienware, Microsoft, Sony and Gizmondo." This is a fairly odd sentiment given the company is now bankrupt and isn't making games anymore. Maybe the CES doesn't pay much attention to the news (or found it near-impossible to decipher) or Gizmondo pre-paid over a year ago and gets an empty booth.
Gizmondo doesn't seem to be dying a graceful death. Stories like the Bo Stefan Eriksson story keep cropping up. Maybe the empty booth at the 2007 CES will be the dénouement of this pathetic riches-to-rags story; or maybe a huge surprise with the return of Gizmondo.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Viacom -- parent company to CBS and Paramount Studios -- is set to join Disney in offering movie downloads via Apple's iTunes store. This, according to "people familiar with the situation." For the moment, the deal will only cover Paramount's back catalog of titles such as "Forrest Gump," "Mission Impossible," and "The Truman Show." The deal could be announced as early as today. No mention of any LionsGate deal which we've been expecting since August. So come on in, join us for our live coverage of Macworld and find out for yourself.

Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today in collaboration with Cingular. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen display with multi-touch support, 2 megapixel cam, 8 GB of storage, and 3G radio -- and amazingly, it somehow runs OS X. A proximity sensor disables the touchscreen when it's close to your face, while the iTunes support rocks CoverFlow. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture?

Well now we know that iTV has officially become Apple TV. It's real folks: we got 802.11 b/g AND 802.11n, USB 2.0, Ethernet, WiFi, HDMI, bunch of standard outs, plus a 40GB hard drive -- all powered by an Intel CPU. So resolution is only 720p -- looks like a few folks are gonna be out of luck, but TV manufacturers are sure gonna be happy to sell all those new sets. Not just one, two or three but five computers can connect to the Apple TV box, making a true hub for all your PCs. You can watch content stored on your rig -- movies, TV shows, photos, etc. -- and you can also pull streaming vid directly off sites like...Apple.com! Plus, the box will even grab content from PCs outside of your house -- finally, we can watch all the great swag that our rich can afford. Interested? You'll be able to grab one immediately for $299.

Like most of the rest of the tech-obsessed world, we were following along with rapt attention today as Steve Jobs revealed the iPhone to a massive MacWorld audience. Sure, it's pretty cool that you'll soon be able to make phone calls on the world's most popular MP3 player, but what we're really excited about is the gaming potential of the device. Why? Here's why:
Dual-touch: Imagine the Nintendo DS touch screen. Now stretch it out, design it for fingers instead of a stylus, and let it recognize two different inputs simultaneously. We can only imagine the gaming possibilities designers can create with this.
Accelerometer: Sure, Jobs uses it to simply switch between portrait and landscape modes, but we don't see any reason this feature can't be used for WarioWare Twisted-style games with tilt-based controls
Internet: Wi-Fi is already old news on the Nintendo DS and PSP, but since the iPhone is a cell phone, you could theoretically connect to your cell network and play online even without a Wi-Fi hot spot. The built-in web browser has the potential to allow for mobile play on thousands of free Flash games as well.
Built-in camera: This may sound a little silly, but we were really excited about the EyeToy-like functionality of the Gizmondo. Now that that's crashed and burned, the iPhone's built-in two-megapixel camera and detailed widescreen could bring the concept back.
Distribution: iTunes is already on millions of computers and has trained users to accept making micropayments for downloadable content. Oh, and it already has games. Dare we dream of downloading games-on-demand over a cell phone network?
While Jobs didn't sepcifically mention any gaming applications for the iPhone during his keynote speech, we think it's only a matter of time before some form of interactive entertainment is announced for the device. At least, we hope it's only a matter of time. Please?

The bad news: in case you haven't heard, the iPhone's still a few months off yet (boo!). The good news: Cingular is more than happy to take down your 411 right now and you'll be "among the first" -- along with virtually every Internet-enabled citizen in the world -- to hear when it hits (yay!). Contain youselves, folks, and continue to use your indoor voices, please; there's really nothing new here. Big Orange's signup page looks pretty stock, and we wouldn't be terribly surprised if it'd been cobbled together only after actually finding out yesterday just what it was it signed up to exclusively offer along with everyone else. We've also managed to score Cingular's iPhone announcement for business customers; its similarly unrevealing, though it does make note that Apple has banned Cingular from offering discounts on the most important consumer device ever iPhone to business customers. Sorry, Premier customers, but not much of a surprise there.

I was bored a couple of days ago (actually it was the day the entries for the contribution contest were due) and decided (like fxb has many times ) to port an app from Rockbox. I ported Brickmania. It works pretty well on ipod photos/videos, but there are some bugs (well...I think they are bugs, I can't really tell since I never played the game on rockbox), but I was able to make it to level 3 without any trouble.
Anyways:

Despite all of the noise about the amazing potential that a touchscreen pocket computer with all sorts of fancy sensors could have as a gaming device, the truth of the matter is that like everything Apple, the iPhone is likely not going to be very game friendly.
That is because Apple wants to keep tight control over everything that goes on to their platform. Shocker!
Water Cooler Games reports that Apple reps are already referring to the iPhone as a "closed platform" and say that there will not be any public SDJ released. The reps did say you could call up the company if you're interested, but it sounds like they are going to be pretty damn strict about not letting in on their private money-making party.
Add to that the fact that the iPhone will support first party software only and you've got a device that won't be getting anything more exciting than a vanilla Tetris in the next decade.
One more wonderful possibility shot in the foot.

Newsweek's N'Gai Croal pinged us with his take on how the iPhone will shake things up. He blogs:
The iPhone isn't a direct challenger to Sony's portable gaming ambitions--that would be the wildly popular Nintendo DS--but it most certainly is a threat to Sony's mobile media and communication ambitions. After all, the iPod has iTunes (with music, movies, TV and games); while the PSP has the Playstation Network (for PS2 games that can run on the PSP's emulator and...nothing else right now--more than two years after its launch.)
But what about the DS? Croal says:
The iPhone won't stop the DS from selling like ice on a hot summer day, but it could cause a lot of casual DS owners to put it in a sock drawer and forget about it. But for now, it looks like the only thing that's being shaken up is Apple as the company gets entangled in a legal dispute over trademark infringement. Portable gaming, for now you are safe!

Believe us, by this point we're all feeling a little weary of all the mega-intense iPhone news/drama/speculation that's been going around these past few days, but we couldn't help but remark on John Markoff's comment in the New York Times yesterday that Apple could possibly add 3G to the iPhone via a software update. It's not unheard of for a firmware upgrade to unlock new features or functionality in a device, but the sources we've spoken to have made it pretty clear that Apple hasn't wedged a UMTS or HSDPA radio into this thing. Not that we wouldn't mind this being true. We're pretty bummed that the iPhone doesn't have HSDPA -- once you taste 3G, it's hard to go back to anything slower -- but it's semi-understandable that they'd want to use an EDGE radio that'd cost less and be less power hungry. Or at least that seems to be the prevailing theory, Jobsy hasn't exactly come out and said why a high-end handset that's due out in mid-2007 will be a generation behind in its wireless connectivity.

This ain't your Xbox's Rainbow Six, but Wired's GameLife was impressed by Gameloft's version of Rainbow Six Vegas for the mobile platform -- at least for the duration of a 10-minute play session. The first two stages featured some variety, including a sniper task (pictured) and then a casino assault. GameLife noted that the second stage worked particularly well because players simply control a cursor; it's essentially a point-n-click action game.
Gameloft has a lot of experience developing mobile games, including 11 previous Tom Clancy titles. Last summer, the company was named the 'Best Mobile Games Studio' at the Develop Conference & Expo.

If you're getting poor quality on calls to mobile phones at home or abroad, it's probably because of the operator's poor business strategy, not the quality of its wireless network.
That's according to Conrad Tuytte, the CEO of network testing specialist Meucci Solutions. He claimed that mobile operators across Europe could be losing call revenue worth millions - and earning themselves an undeserved reputation for poor line quality into the bargain - because they insist on setting their interconnect fees too high.
"A big part of the problem is mobile operators are charging too much for connections from other networks," he said. "They concentrate on offering cheap on-net calls instead - including free minutes, or in some countries, flat rate voice calls - so clever people use those to bypass the interconnect fees."
They do this using devices called SIM boxes, or GSM gateways - essentially two phones on different networks, rigged so that a call arriving on one is routed out again on the other. To the networks involved - which can be mobile or fixed - each call appears to start and end on its own network, so no interconnect fee is payable.
Tuytte said that Meucci detected 50,000 SIM boxes around Europe last year, and claimed that each box could represent as much as €3500 in lost interconnect revenue. On some mobile networks, calls through SIM boxes could be as much as three percent of the total traffic, he added.
These gateways are run by third-party carriers who sell their services on to mobile and fixed line operators, offering them connections to other networks for less than the usual interconnect fee.
"Most of them are poor line quality - you have a large concentration of modems and SIM cards in one location, and the networks aren't designed to handle that, plus with a SIM box you never get caller-ID," Tuytte said.
Other uses of the technology include adding a SIM box to a PBX or VOIP system to cut the cost of calling out to mobiles. This presents less of a quality issue because it's less of a concentration of lines and SIMs, Tuytte claimed.
Belgium-based Meucci detects SIM boxes using its own SIM-equipped probes which it connects to the various telcos in each country. These continually dial each other and measure the call quality to determine how the call was delivered.
It's not the only way to detect SIM boxes, though. Others on the trail include US company Sevis Systems, which analyses network usage data to detect SIM boxes via on their characteristic usage patterns.
Tuytte said that SIM boxes are legal in most (though not all) countries - they are legal in the UK for one's own use, but not for providing commercial services, for example - so they are really a business issue for the mobile operators which they can best deal with by cutting their interconnect rates to more realistic levels.
"There is potentially a business deal in this - the mobile operators need to make a deal, or call the other network and offer them a better rate," he said.

New for Ipod from Yurgle:
http://ipodlinux.org/Special:Module/mikmodule
I just finished version 1.0 of "MikModule". It's a port of LibMikMod 3.2.0 and an interface to Podzilla2. It basically will launch Music Modules or playlists from the file browser.
This basically makes the old, buggy, crashy, never-quite-worked-rightey MikModPodzilla completely obsolete at this point... rather than just abandoned.
Enjoy!

We're guessing not, but El Reg has a piece up squarely accusing Apple of another swipe, this time of the term "Visual Voicemail" to describe the iPhone's voicemail UI. Visual Voicemail, which is owned by Citrix and originally developed by Net6, has been around for years and may (or may not) be what's powering Apple and Cingular's solution for the common problem of having to wait through all the voicemail you don't want just to hear the voicemail you do. And "Visual Voicemail" is, in fact, capitalized on Apple's site, meaning if legit usage of the term or licensed software isn't in the cards, Apple could soon find itself in two simultaneous pots of hot water.

News/release from doodles
Bholland and I have made two small changes to iBoy 0.7.5 and released it as version 0.7.5.1.
Download it here:
http://ipodlinux.org/Image:Iboy0751.zip
The two changes are:
1) Support for iPod Mini 2G. Sound works!
2) Support for diagonal directions controlled via iboy.cfg
--> For example if you want a touchpad button to mimic pressing -both- up and right at the same time, you can set it up like so:
kb_t1=PAD_RIGHT_UP
This is useful for games like Link's Awakening.
Please check the wiki for up-to-date information regarding iBoy, particularly installation info. The wiki should be a good, clear source of information.
http://ipodlinux.org/Iboy
If you have success installing iBoy, please post on this forum and then the wiki can be updated. It would be good to know which iPods this version works on.
Testing results:
Mini 1G: unconfirmed
Mini 2G: works
3G: unconfirmed
4G (Grayscale): unconfirmed
4G (Color): unconfirmed
5G/5.5G: unconfirmed
Nano 1G: unconfirmed

The iPhone's feature set is too limited to appeal to business users and normal people will quickly find out that the iPhone isn't quite the Jesus Phone as some (hell, us) have proclaimed it to be. That's the opinion of a Current Analysis analyst, who predicts a "backlash" as soon as people find out just what the iPhone does and does not do. (Current Analysis helps companies "effectively anticipate and counter competitive threats, and win more business.") Apple may also find itself in hot water with the early adopters who are expected to buy the cellphone for one reason: people like real buttons and not touchscreens.

The iPhone's famous interface is already (illegally) available on Windows Mobile and Palm-based smartphones as skins. The iPone skins don't add any real functionality, but they do completely rip off Apple's trademarks left and right, something that has upset Jobs & Co. As such, Apple has demanded the removal of the files from the messageboards (Brighthand and xda developers) where they were first posted. You're probably better off just waiting for the real thing.

Apple's iPhone is unlikely to become a gateway device for mobile malware, Symantec says.
The handset will run an operating system based on Mac OS X, thus opening the possibility that the small number of viruse targeting the platform might be re-purposed to infect iPhone.
However, Concerns about possible mobile infestation of iPhones are "premature" at worst according to Eric Chien, an anti-virus researcher at Symantec.
For one thing the iPhone will be locked down so that consumers will be able to install only selected third party applications. While not dismissing the possibility that iPhone-specific malware could be created, Chien reckons it won't reach the levels currently seen with smart phones running Symbian OS. Nonetheless, vulnerabilities in Mac OS X could create future problems, he warns.
"The likely vectors of infection will be via any vulnerabilities on the device that allow code to execute. Unfortunately, just a single malware writer taking advantage of a single vulnerability could cause havoc, but for the most part such attacks will be limited," he writes.
"If the iPhone remains a closed device with not even Java applications or widgets let alone native code, the risk of infection becomes orders of magnitude lower."
Even though the iPhone is "locked down", interest in the technology is likely to spur the creation of home-brew hacks. The motives of these users is simply to run their own code on the phone, but the techniques pioneered by tech enthusiasts might be re-purposed for more malign purposes.
"Once they install and execute unknown code on their device, there is always a chance of executing malicious code. This scenario happened in the past with the Sony PSP and PSPBrick Trojan," Chien notes.
A mono-culture of devices running the same OS, knowledge among hackers about how software on the device works have been factors driving the creation of numerous items of malware on Windows PCs and the reason why mobile malware, despite considerable hype from some quarters, has been mercifully rare. Chien concludes that this is unlikely to change much with the arrival of iPhones later this year.

Sure, LG's KE850 Prada handset will set users back a cool $778, and the Google Switch just might pop in to make things a bit more interesting, but a recent research report has unveiled that Apple's sure-to-be-sold-out iPhone is a lean, mean, profit-generating machine nonetheless. While Apple's well-known for selling its iPods (and to a lesser extent, its Macs) for much, much more than it cost to manufacture, even we're a bit taken aback at how hard those corporate buyers must be workin' those suppliers on this one. According to iSuppli (no affiliation with Apple, of course), the 4GB iPhone will yield a "49.3 percent profit margin on each unit sold at the $499 retail price," while the 8GB rendition will kick back a 46.9-percent margin. You heard right, they're supposing the $499 mobile only costs Apple $245.83 to produce, while the 8GB flavor demands just $264.85. Of course, this isn't the first time a hot-selling product has been broken down by the numbers to prove just how ripped off we're all getting (if these numbers are to be trusted, that is) -- but hey, unless you've got the means to buy capacitors and LCD touchscreens by the boatload, you're probably stuck paying exactly what they ask. Plus if all this sudden competition gets a bit too heated, don't think Apple doesn't have any room to introduce a (highly desired) price drop.

This mod takes away a key feature of the iPod—being small—but makes up for it with a coolness factor. A Gameboy was hacked apart to accommodate an iPod video. It even includes an internal dock connector and the buttons on the Gameboy were wired up to control the iPod. Check out the entire Flickr set below to see more of this mod.

Apple doesn't seem to have given much weight to Norway's threats of repercussions for the continued iPod + iTunes + FairPlay lockdown, but even if the Norwegians decided to actually get nasty about it, Apple could always pull iPods from Norway shelves and take its business elsewhere. However, Apple might have to start paying attention now that other EU members are hopping aboard, with France and Germany leading the charge. Norway, which had originally set a June '06 date for an Apple response, which then got bumped to August, has a fresh September date for Apple to respond to, and the members of this new anti-DRM coalition are promising increased pressure as that date looms near. No telling how this will end up playing out, but we're sure Apple isn't going to give up its little cash-cow ecosystem without a fight. All of this is in addition to a law that went into effect in France last August which allows regulators to force Apple to open up the iPod and iTunes, but we haven't heard a peep out of that one so far.

Gonzague de Vallois, vice president of publishing at Gameloft, has warned that mobile gaming companies must find new ways of communicating with consumers if the industry is to expand.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the Osney Media Mobile Gaming Forum in London this morning, de Vallois said, "The biggest challenge for the industry is to drive people to the portal so they know they can download games and have a good experience... The only way is to educate."
Fellow panelist Anders Hakfelt of Hands-On Mobile said that it is also important to ensure that consumers aren't disappointed by their experiences with mobile gaming. "I think we have to look at game quality... Managing people's expectations is a challenge in retail because you have limited time and limited space to do it," he said.
"It's very important to be honest with the consumer in terms of what they should expect."
Other challenges for the industry, according to de Vallois, include the need to create new distribution systems. "SMS is not the perfect way. If you have to send three SMSes and receive three SMSes before you can download a game, there is no way we're going to grow this business," he argued.
"If we want to have new distribution channels which can help grow the business, there also need to be the right billing methods."

We're known to drop an f-bomb or two on occasion on these pages, just for, you know, dramatic effect. Sometimes that drama even includes an s-bomb and a d-bomb, and although we've yet to drop the c-bomb, we've pretty much used every other four-lettered expletive we can think of. But unlike CNN.com, we've never used the r-bomb before. The r-bomb? Yes, the r-bomb -- as in "ripshit." Some of you may be asking yourself, "Self, WTF is ripshit?" Others of you are asking "Self, since they've never used ripshit before, can we go and get a cookie?" Both groups are perfectly fine in asking said questions -- but for the group not rummaging about for a cookie, according to the grand source of all things full of truthiness, Wikipedia, "ripshit [is] another synonym for bullshit." Hmm, sounds semi-naughty to us -- but we've also heard it used to mean "extremely angry...or insane." Either way, we think it fits the intended use by the Business 2.0 side of CNN.com in describing number 93 on the list of 101 dumbest business moments of 2006 as being "like a totally ripshit videogame..." That's right, they're talking about former Gizmondo exec and member of the Swedish mafia, Stefan Eriksson, over his Enzo-busting exploits (gallery reminder for those who've forgotten below) that were so brilliantly stupid, a t-shirt was designed in order to raise awareness. Guess we'll have to give some props to CNN for calling a spade a spade -- or one ripshit ****er, a ripshit ****er.

We'll admit, we definitely admired Belkin's prototype version a lot better, but Sakar is doing something with its iPod-engulfing PVP that Belkin currently isn't -- bringing it to market. The iView player mimics a portable DVD player in just about every major aspect, including the seven-inch widescreen display, built-in stereo speakers, thin frame, AV output, and rechargeable battery, but instead of letting users load up their favorite disc, it sports a sunk-in socket for one's iPod video along with a dock connector to seat your Apple and keep it well hidden while in use. While we're not positive about when Sakar plans on rolling this thing out, nor if it'll come in a white color scheme to compliment the black, it'll run you $150 when it finally lands.

The Sony-Ericsson SO703i--the 'smell'O'phone'--will be released in Japan preloaded with a mobile version of LocoRoco, the quirky 2D platformer currently only available on the PlayStation Portable.
LocoRoco... on a mobile? LocoRoco was developed by Sony, and released in 2006. In the game, players tilt the on-screen environment to guide the cartoony LocoRoco characters to the end of each level.
The new phone also boasts a series of interchangeable, fragranced 'aroma sheet' face plates, which smell when the user opens up the phone. The display utilises some of the same technology that exists in Sony's Bravia televisions, and the telephone will be available on the NTT Docomo network.
The release date of the new handset in Japan is "tentatively" February--as of press time, a Sony spokesperson hadn't responded to a request for information on whether Europe and America would also see LocoRoco coming to mobiles.

This morning, a reputable investment site made mention that AT&T plans to give away 18 months of service for free with every iPhone. It's not important who said this cough*thestreet.com*cough, but a Cingular rep just told me that the rumors are simply not true:
The report is nonsense. We've always said the only way you can get the iPhone is with a Cingular rate plan.
We're all for salivating over rumors when labeled as fantasy, but this one is so...
unbelievable that it doesn't even get us half-hard. OK, take the world's most anticipated phone, sell it exclusively. Sounds like a money machine. So, why give away the minutes and data for 18 months, leaving 6 months of paid service on the 2-year contract? Bunk...unless that 50% margin on the totally unsubsidized phone is going into Cingular's pockets. That could rewrite the way phones are sold...Yes! UGH, no. Must...resist...rumors.
Let's get the word out that this isn't true.

Another Guest has ported Duke Nukem 3D for the S60 3rd Edition, heres the release info:
Hi!
Here is a quick build of Duke3d for the S60v3 using SDL backend.
Files goes into memorycard\DUKE3d
You need to create a working config file for it to work using the original duke. I.e Install duke3d.. shareware for example. configure it.. Then copy the files to your memorycard under \Duke3d
I have n't tested this.. And.. SDL keys works. 0+ to reconfigure.. 1.. input mode.. Joystick not tested.. Configure keys should work..
2.. Screen mode...3.. more screen mode.. 4.. stretch the screen
Download test at
http://anotherguest.k0.se/duke3ds60v3.sis
Does it even start?
And yes its pretty complicated.. But on the S60v3.. worth it I guess.
Hi! I now tested it on a Nokia N80 and it works but SDL need some tweaking for 256 colours to work properly in stretch mode, and for controls to work, such as enter, esc etc.
Download the SIS with the shareware data files here
http://anotherguest.k0.se/duke3d_shareware.zip
unzip on root of the memorycard (Will create memorycard:\duke3d\ and the sis file in the root of the memorycard).
Install SiS and launch it.

While Cingular (er, AT&T, but you know what we mean) couldn't seem prouder of its iPhone exclusivity, apparently Apple's first choice was Verizon, but the two companies couldn't agree on a deal that worked for both companies. "We said no." Said Jim Gerace, a VZW VP. "We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial." Talks began as far back as two years ago, but Apple's demands were steep. They also give us an idea of what exactly is behind the Apple / Cingular agreement: Apple wanted a percentage of monthly service fees, control over distribution that would limit iPhone sales to Apple and Verizon stores, and even some control over service and support for iPhone customers. "They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat ... on hardware and service support," say Gerace. Cingular doesn't quite see it that way, so perhaps Apple changed its conditions a bit when it started courting Cingy. Says Mark Siegel, a Cingular spokesman, "I don't want to leave the impression that these (iPhone) customers are not ours. They are." Mark also mentioned that Cingular would field calls related to wireless service, and that "We think this is a win for Apple, and it is a win for Cingular." Whether consumers -- who would have presumably had a fair shot at an EV-DO iPhone with Verizon as a service provider -- will win in the end is yet to be seen.

Well hello new iPod shuffles. Breaking free from their bleak battleship-grey origins, the $79 iPod shuffle now hits in your choice of pink, green, blue, and even a new tasty orange flavor. Still 1GB, still 12 hours of battery, and yes... available with free laser engraving just in time for Valentines Day.
You might remember the (minor) public outcry at Apple's failure to include those snazzy new iPod headphones with its 2G shuffle, especially considering the fact that the first time we got our hands on one, Apple was showing it off with the new headphones in tow. Well now it looks like Apple has finally gotten with the program and is including the new headphones with the 2G shuffle.

Mobile games publisher Gameloft has released its Q4 financial report, revealing sales of EUR 21.8 million - up 41 per cent from the same period last year.
During the course of 2005, sales of Gameloft's mobile titles rose by more than 50 per cent. There was a significant rise in the popularity of downloadable games, which now account for 91 per cent of the company's sales.
Just 1 per cent of Gameloft's revenues came from jeuxvideo.com, which was sold last June for EUR 22.9 million.
Quarter four saw a healthy rise of sales in Europe for Gameloft, but overall the market split evened out over the course of 2006. North America is catching up with 41 per cent of sales, while Europe is still just ahead with 43 per cent. The remainder is divided amongst other territories, mainly in Asia and Latin America.
Full year sales were up by 46 per cent compared to 2005 to reach EUR 68.4 million. As a result, Gameloft has slightly exceeded the EUR 68 million target set last September.
The company claims to be the leading mobile gaming business in Europe and the second largest player in North America. It launched 45 games in 2006, with best-sellers including Platinum Sudoku, Deal or No Deal, 2006 Real Football and Mission Impossible III.
Gameloft expects 2007 sales to reach between EUR 90 million and EUR 100 million, with an increase in the operating margin of more than 10 per cent. More than 50 games are due for a release during the course of the year, including Lost, Desperate Housewives and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon.

It seems the next-generation Nokia N-Gage caused quite a stir when it was shown behind closed doors in Santa Monica last week, boasting an impressive amount of interest from top-notch and supposedly top-secret developers and publishers.
SEGA, Sony Online Entertainment, EA Mobile, Vivendi, Square Enix, Capcom, THQ Wireless, Tecmo, Namco, Disney, Universal and Glu Mobile were all reportedly there, according to PocketGamer, though it isn't clear if they're all definitely developing for the platform or just making their minds up.
New features such as a swanky new "N-Gage activation code system" plus "track and manage" game sharing abilities will try to win the big-shot votes, with the software development kit also making its first appearance at the event.
The next-generation of N-Gage was announced back at E3 2005 to appear within Nokia's multimedia handsets, with a few of the proposed games being flashed about at last year's show.
European companies will have a chance to get a look at this flashy little beast next week in Madrid.

Nokia's latest N-Gage handheld was showcased behind closed doors in Santa Monica, California last week, supposedly bartering an impressive level of interest from top-tier third party publishers.
The next-gen portable was originally announced at last year's E3 show (RIP), where it was revealed to be heading to a number of Nokia' multimedia handsets and several games were showcased - along with the '06 shows finest (and sadly, only) booth babes.
This is all according to PocketGamer, who claims that publishers Sega, Vivendi, Square Enix, EA, Capcom, Namco among others were in the audience. The secret unveiling supposedly showcased the handheld's "activation code system" plus "track and manage" game sharing abilities.
With Nintendo's DS doing phenomenally well around the world and Sony shifting a respectable amount of PSPs, is there really room in the handheld market for Nokia? Looking at how it performed last time against the GBA, we're allowed to be a bit cynical - but perhaps Nokia will surprise us when its new portable enters the public eye.
