The iOS version of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, which came out in Japan in December 2010, is finally coming out worldwide. Capcom gave the DS version a year to sell (or not), but the English-language version of the game has already appeared on the New Zealand App Store, typically the first sign of a worldwide release over the course of the next day.
Like the Japanese release, this version of Ghost Trick is somewhat episodic. The first two chapters of the supernatural mystery puzzle adventure game (phew) are free, with the rest of the game available as in-app purchases. We had no problem recommending a purchase of the full game on DS; it's even easier for us to command you to try it for free.

One of video gaming's earliest hits has returned as an iOS game. Sea Wolf, a 1976 arcade game by Midway, has been updated for release on the App Store by Coastal Amusements, based on its own arcade revival. In the transition, the graphics for the submarine combat simulator have been subject to obvious improvements, but the awesome periscope interface has been sacrificed to portability.
That said, the full game is only $1.99 (a lite version is also available), so if you want to go buy a toy periscope and figure out a way to attach it to your iPhone to play this, your investment is still going to be pretty low.

Software update enables app 'repackaging' for beleaguered BlackBerry tablet.
Last summer RIM confirmed its QNX tools would enable BlackBerry OS devices to run Android apps, and that the PlayBook would support the this feature as soon as a software update was released.
Now, that appears to be imminent. The PlayBook OS 2.0 upgrade will feature 'BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps', which allows developers with existing Android creations to repackage them for the PlayBook and the unreleased BlackBerry 10 OS.
James from the RIM developer relations team, blogged: "Seeing the great response for the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps at CES, developer meet-ups and conferences that we’ve attended over the last few months, we’re expecting a huge interest in the consumer space for these apps when the update is made available."
The OS update will reportedly support thousands of new apps, advanced integrated email and better tablet-to-smartphone synergy.
It's great news for the BlackBerry tablet, which hasn't had a good start. PlayBook experienced shocking sales, which declined quarter-on-quarter during its debut in 2011. Embarrassingly, the firm also had 5,000 units stolenjust before Christmas.

If you'll recall, it was April of last year when we reported on pictures from Apple.pro, which claimed to show a seventh-generation iPod Nano chassis with room for a camera. Not long after, the site posted asecond leak of the device, hinting at the omission of the Nano's famous clip in favor of optics. Fast forward to the present, and we're now looking another supposed shot of the unit, however, this time the clip is back and it's made room for the shooter. Like prior Nano-camera efforts, this prototype's loaded with a less-than-whopping 1.3-megapixels of resolution, which M.I.C Gadget claims in its non-final form, took overexposed photos. Apple's apparently also been toying with 2-megapixel prototypes, but those too were apparently deemed unsatisfactory. M.I.C. Gadget also muses the two month old prototype is nearing release, and that it could be released before the traditional fall schedule. Seeing as the Nano's long overdue for a hardware refresh, we'd file that under definitively maybe, but before believing, take copious amounts of salt as you hit the source link below for a bevy of pics.

NASA is exploring the strange new world of social and mobile gaming, with two new game apps designed to educate about math, flight, and the history of space exploration.
Sector 33 for iOS is an air traffic control simulator, in which players manage the speed and route of up to five planes coming into San Francisco from the east. Instead of the breezy gameplay of Flight Control, you have to deal with actual wind and other real-life complications.
Space Race Blast Off is a virtual game show on Facebook in which players compete to answer space-related trivia for points, in categories including "technology," "astronauts," and "math." Go learn something!

If you thought Mango was the bee's knees, just wait till you get a hold of Apollo. No, seriously, keep waiting 'cause we have no idea when that will happen. While we still can't say when Windows Phone 8 will be making its way to a handset near you, we do have quite a few new details about the mobile OS courtesy of the folks over at PocketNow. The site managed to snag a copy of a video starring Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore talking about what's coming in the next major revision. Those of you concerned with Microsoft's inability to go toe to toe with Apple and Google on specs can breathe a bit easier as new screen resolutions (four in total) and dual-core CPUs will be supported, while those clamoring for more storage will be happy to hear that microSD support has returned -- this time in anofficial capacity. Rounding out the new hardware features will be NFC support, including the Beam-like ability to share content by tapping, though, it'll have the advantage of being able to share with Windows 8 based tablets and laptops as well. And, speaking of Windows 8, its similarly numbered, phone-centric sibling won't just share a UI, it'll have many of the core components, including large chunks of the kernel, networking stack and security features -- which should make porting apps from the desktop to the handset a relatively simple affair.
Amazingly enough, the list of improvements doesn't end there. If you've been wondering when Microsoft was going to put its Skype acquisition to good use, wonder no more. A Windows Phone app for the VoIP service will debut alongside Apollo and will feature deep integration with the OS, including the ability to place calls the same as you would standard voice calls. A new live tile and app called DataSmart will make it easier for users to manage their data usage and ensure they don't end up eating insane overage fees. To milk every last bit out of that data plan Windows Phone will favor WiFi over a cellular connection and can be programmed to automatically connect to carrier-owned hotspots when they're in range. And, if that weren't enough, Microsoft plans to use proxy servers to compress web pages before feeding them to the mobile version of Internet Explorer 10, not unlike Opera Mini. Those of you who doubted that Windows Phone could actually keep pace with Android and iOS, now might be a good time to reevaluate your position. Hit up the source link for a few more details.

Offer made in attempt to reel in fresh content for launch of the tablet's 2.0 OS.
Just yesterday, we reported the new BlackBerry PlayBook OS would come with 'BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps', a platform that allows Android developers to repackage their Google OS apps for use on the tablet and BlackBerry 10.
Now, developers also have the chance to secure one free 16GB PlayBook following entry of their converted Android app to BlackBerry App World before February 13th, 2012.
While the BlackBerry Developer Blog says "further details about the promotion will be posted on our developer site as soon as possible", there are currently no terms and conditions being enforced. Although, the rules that are created will be in order to "prevent abuse of the promotion."
The offer was brought to people's attention when RIM's VP of developer relations Alec Saunders posted a tweet, saying: "Shh.... Android Devs - submit your Android app to BB AppWorld by Feb 13 and get a free Playbook --> tools here: http://bit.ly/w758Ci"
The BlackBerry App World, much like RIM, has been criticised for failing to compete with rival platforms and it's pretty obvious from this latest step that RIM has a lot riding on the team up with Android.

Next-gen version of the OS could feature NFC, pre-loaded Skype and support for porting Android/iOS apps.
Apollo is a future update for the Windows Phone OS and though it isn't expected to arrive until late 2012, PocketNow has revealed some of the features thanks to leaked info from senior VP and Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore.
The news, which was only intended for the eyes of Nokia execs, says Apollo will be developed with a focus towards Windows 8 to allow synchronisation between the platforms.
According to the report, Microsoft's $8.5 billion Skype takeover will finally be bring the VoIP client to the OS, ensuring "Skype calls behave almost identically to regular, non-VoIP telephony."
This will be welcome news to WinPho users, who have not had access to Skype even though the Microsoft/Skype deal closed in Q3.
Apollo is also expected to receive native code support to enable iOS and Android developers to adapt existing apps for Windows Phone. This follows RIM's move to allow Android app conversions to BlackBerry 10 and PlayBook OS 2.0.

Gingerbread OS is the most dominant with almost two-thirds.
Ice Cream Sandwich (or Android 4.0) is the seventh Android OS to have been launched, making its debut on the Galaxy Nexus in November 2011.
According to CultOfAndroid, ICS now occupies one per cent of Android devices and while that may sound pretty feeble, the platform is still only available for the Galaxy Nexus at present.
The results show Gingerbread (Android 2.3) is the driving force for the platform leading with 58.6 per cent of all devices, followed by Froyo (2.2) with 27.8 per cent.
However, ICS adoption should rise in the near future followingSamsung's plans to roll the OS out on Galaxy devices including the S II, Note, R and Tab this quarter.
The Samsung devices can expect to receive improved multi-tasking, notifications, wi-fi connections, NFC support and web browsing.

Apple has been ordered to stop selling the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 in Germany after Motorola alleged a violation of patent.
According to PC Advisor, the court order was issued after it was alleged that Apple had violated patent licences relating to a certain GPRS module used in the two devices. The iPhone 4S is exempt from the ban because it uses a Qualcomm version of the same module.
Apple is reported to be appealing the decision with the argument that Motorola had refused to license the patent “on acceptable terms” and that the module was declared to be an industrial patent in 2005.

Thanks to a leaked video — a video that Microsoft made for Nokia — we now have lots of details about Windows Phone 8 (WP8). From deep Windows 8, Skype, and SkyDrive integration, through to the addition of NFC 'wallet' payments and BitLocker encryption, it sounds like Windows Phone 8 will be close to iOS and Android in terms of features. The interesting stuff is under the hood, though: WP8 will have the Windows 8 kernel instead of the Windows CE kernel of its predecessors. Through the Win 8 kernel, WP8 will support native code and multi-core processors. It will also have the same network stack, security, and multimedia support as Windows 8. While Win 8 apps won't be directly compatible with Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore says developers will be able to 'reuse — by far — most of their code.'

A recent blog post has Android developers talking about Google finally scanning third party applications for malware. Oddly enough, Google claims this service (codenamed 'Bouncer') has been active for some time: 'The service has been looking for malicious apps in Market for a while now, and between the first and second halves of 2011, we saw a 40% decrease in the number of potentially-malicious downloads from Android Market. This drop occurred at the same time that companies who market and sell anti-malware and security software have been reporting that malicious applications are on the rise.' So it appears that they allow the software to be sold even before it is scanned and it also appears that no one has been bitten by a false positive from this software. Apparently Bouncer is not as oppressive as Apple's solution although given recent news its effectiveness must be questioned. Have any readers had their apps flagged or pulled by Bouncer?"

Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition on iOS and Android generated the bulk of $26m in digital revenues for Take-Two in its fiscal Q3.
Overall net revenues for the Rockstar and 2K parent stood at $236.3m for the three months ending December 31st, as reported by MCV earlier.
However, 11 per cent of this figure came from sales of downloadable games and content – equating to $25.982m. Take-Two says this was driven mainly by downloadable Grand Theft Auto content, specifically the 10th Anniversary Edition of Grand Theft Auto III. This arrived on the iPhone and iPad App Stores as well as Android devices in mid-December.
A Take-Two earnings statement read: “Digitally delivered content accounted for 11 per cent of net revenue, driven by offerings for the Grand Theft Auto franchise – particularly the Grand Theft Auto III - 10th Anniversary Edition for iOS and Android, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands and L.A. Noire.”
Take-Two reported profits of $14.2m for its fiscal Q3 – a drop of 65 per cent year-on-year. The firm expects its fiscal 2013 to be one of its ‘best years ever’, hinting at a Christmas release for Grand Theft Auto V.

HP's Enyo framework is an essential ingredient for allowing new apps to work on webOS devices with different resolutions, but due to some sort of ethnocentric hiccup, v1.0 hasn't officially reached all international webOS phones and tablets. Fortunately, WebOS Internals has prepared a nice little Preware install package that anyone, anywhere can enjoy. At this point, adding Enyo will only provide access to a few extra apps, but at least the world will be reunited in its preparedness for a glistening future, right?

How many times have you been in the middle of an intense Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies round when you've had to suddenly stop? Well, Activision has a solution in the latest update: save and load games mid-session.
It's just one of the additions in this free update, which also adds the ray gun, six different tiers of in-game point packs that players can purchase through the app, and monkey bombs -- relax, they're not real monkeys strapped with dynamite or anything. They're actually cute little toys that explode, which may actually be worse now that we think about it. We like toys!

This happens to us every time: We walk into the cell phone store, search the displays excitedly, and are immediately disappointed by the lack of small firearms for sale. Every time. Mobile games developer Metal Compass is looking to change this depressing experience with the Xappr, a gun-shaped smartphone peripheral for a selection of augmented-reality and shooting apps, including AR Invaders and Spray'Em. Xappr is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices, although no Windows games are available at the moment.
Metal Compass will be showing off the Xappr at the Nuremberg international toy fair, which runs February 1-6, and expects to begin shipping it in June. Xappr is available forpre-order now, at the lowest price you'll ever pay for a gun you didn't steal: $30 (plus $15 shipping in the US).

Operator support and a vast app selection helps Google beat Apple.
As phone manufacturers and operating systems battle for supremacy, analyst NPD says first-time smartphone buyers prefer Android compared to iOS. More than half chose the Google OS, compared to 34 per cent that elected iPhones.
Together the OSs accounted for over three-quarters of smartphones sold during Q4 2011, according to the report. Additionally, smartphones made up over 68 per cent of all mobile phones sold in the US during the same period, rising by 18 per cent year-on-year.
Ross Rubin, exec director of connected intelligence, NPD, said: "Android has been criticised for offering a more complex user experience than its competitors, but the company's wide carrier support and large app selection is appealing to new smartphone customers.
"Android's support of LTE at Verizon has also made it the exclusive choice for customers who want to take advantage of that carrier's fastest network."
However, those that chose iPhone 4S did so because of processing speeds, an improved camera and virtual assistant Siri, which helped become the best-selling device of the quarter, beating the iPhone 4 by 75 per cent.

Younger smartphone users identify difficult Iranian art films using their BlackBerry Curves.
Research from Dres Consulting for Odyssey Mobile revealed the extent to which smartphones are now influencing real-world purchasing behaviour.
It found, for example, that 58 per cent of these users are likely to click on a banner to watch a movie trailer they are interested in on their device, compared to the market average of 23 per cent.
It also revealed:
* 81 per cent want more film information available to view on their smartphones
* 70 per cent of users are interested in seeing trailers on their devices
* 67 per cent spend at least one hour per day surfing the web on their smartphone
* 53 per cent have used their device to follow up on a TV ad while 42 per cent have done the same for a poster ad
* A quarter of these users have downloaded a specific app for researching new movies
The study looked at smartphone users in the UK, Germany and France.

iPhone leads iPad and iPod Touch, accounting for three-quarters of failures.
App diagnostics firm Crittercism analysed the Apple and Google operating systems between December 1st and December 15th 2011 and found that iOS apps are the most unreliable, crashing more than those on Android, according to Forbes.
The report says iOS creations crashed after 0.51 per cent of launches, while Android was at just 0.15 per cent in the first quartile.
The second and third quartiles demonstrated iOS launch crashes of 1.47 and 3.66 per cent respectively, while Android had 0.73 per cent and 2.97 per cent.
Crittercism examined 23 different versions of iOS and 33 different Android versions, which showed iOS 5.0.1 was the cause of 33.93 per cent of iOS crashes, while Android Gingerbread (2.3.3) was responsible for 24.76 per cent of crashes.
The reason for the technical glitches has been put down to number of reasons with hardware, GPS, cameras and device memory among them.

24MAS has added to its growing roster of games with this iOS title, which features the former Formula One World Champion, Kimi Räikkönen. His nickname was the Ice Man, by the way.
The free app takes the player through Kimi’s racing career from carts through to rally, with four race vehicles and 16 different tracks.
Users get the chance to race head to head with the multiplayer match up mode along with the chance to race in arcade and career modes. There are also new tracks to unlock.
Räikkönen said: ”I am really excited to see the game develop from a design document and drawings into something interactive that I can play myself.
"The game is fun whilst being challenging, the mix of cars and tracks give different experiences in racing and I love to be able to race head to head with my racing friends all around the world.

But some clones reached top of App Store chart before being pulled
Apple appears to have deleted a range of App Store games that were found to be infringing on copyright law as well as unethically duplicating popular game designs.
The US App Store has removed counterfeit apps such as Plant vs Zombie, Angry Ninja Birds and Temple Jump, according to news site TechCrunch. The clones no longer appear on the UK App Store.
Apple has not explained how such titles were approved and published on its digital platform. Some of these plagiarised apps have previously sold their way to the top of the App Store chart.
Many of the clones were developed by indie coder Anton Sinelnikov. It is claimed he had published nearly 70 iOS apps. At the time of writing, Sinelnikov has just nine apps left.
The issue of App Store cloning was thrown back into the spotlight after it was alleged that Zynga had duplicated the popular free-to-play mobile game Tiny Tower.

Anna Leach reports that Siri support has been a contentious issue for owners of earlier iPhones, but a recent filing from Audience shows that Siri won't run on the iPhone 4 because the phone's chip can't handle it. Linley Gwennap of the Linley Groupcracked one of the secrets of the new iPhone's A5 chip after working out that it packs some serious audio cleaning power not available on the iPhone 4's A4 chip. Audience has developed technology that removes most or all of the background noise when someone places a cell-phone call from a restaurant, airport, or other noisy location. The iPhone 4S integrates Audience's 'EarSmart' technology directly into the A5 processor, improving its technology to handle 'far-field speech,' which means holding the device at arm's length rather than directly in front of the mouth. Apple has also licensed the Audience technology for a 'new generation of processor IP,' which may mean that the forthcoming A6 processor will appear in the iPad 3 and iPhone 5. 'Why Apple has not simply purchased Audience is unclear. An acquisition would prevent Audience's other major customer, Samsung, from using the technology to compete with Apple,' says Gwennap. 'The company may be hedging its bets, as it could switch to Qualcomm's Fluence noise-reduction technology in the future.

New details have emerged about the ongoing Apple-Motorola drama in Germany, courtesy of a court document uncovered by FOSS Patents. The two companies have been engaged in a patent battle of swelling proportion these past few months, with the most recent wrinkle unfolding on Friday, when Apple promptly removed (and returned) its 3G / UMTS-enabled iPads and iPhone 4s from its online German store, in response to a court ruling. At issue in this particular case is a Motorola patent that Apple wants to use under FRAND obligations, but Moto apparently isn't willing to license its technology for free. According to a court filing, the handset maker is asking for 2.25 percent of Apple sales in return for the license, though it remains unclear whether this pertains to sales of all products or, more likely, the 3G-enabled devices under consideration in court. Either way, though, Motorola would stand to seequite a bit of extra revenue, especially considering that Apple's iPhone sales have totaled about $93 billion since 2007. Under Motorola's request, the company would have made about $2.1 billion from these sales alone -- not to mention the payments it'd see from iPad sales, as well. Apple, meanwhile, has filed motions to access Motorola's licensing agreements with Nokia, HTC and other manufacturers, in the hopes of exposing a double standard.

According to the latest research from the NPD group, Apple has got its second wind in smartphone sales. In the same quarter that saw the iPhone 4S reinvent the wheel obey our every vocal whim, the trio of available models soaked up a total of 43 percent of the US smartphone market in Q4 2012, apparently gnawing away at Android's market share of 53 percent held during the rest of 2011. However, Google's mobile OS appears to be the debutante smartphone of choice, cornering 57 percent of new purchases, with 34 percent going for Apple. The remaining 9 percent is distributed between the smartphone also-rans, with the likes of Windows Phone and BlackBerry languishing in that anonymous grey bar at the top. The top five handsets from NPD's Mobile Phone Track service is an Apple and Samsung love-in, with iOS devices claiming the three top spots, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S II (we assume collectively) and the Galaxy S 4G. NPD's blow-by-blow commentary on this increasingly two-horse race awaits below.

Corpse Party was a pleasant surprise on PSP -- well, "pleasant" in that it was a good game. There's nothing pleasant about being trapped in an inescapable nightmare dimension of malicious ghosts and dead children. And now it's moving to iOS, at least in Japan, where it will be even more convenient to access the game's unexpectedly disturbing imagery (and random asides about hemorrhoid cream).
Publisher 5pb will release a port of the PC98/PC/PSP game Corpse Party Blood Cover Repeated Fear this Thursday, on February 9. The app will sell for the terrifyingly steep price of 2,200 yen ($29). We're inquiring with American publisher XSEED about a localized (hopefully cheaper) release.

With its crisp design-agency visuals, electro sounds and ingratiating, streetwise chatter - it will "punch your brain in the face" and is "rad", apparently - Puzzlejuice is the image of a slick, fashionable iPhone game. Underneath, however, it's just the kind of improvised, cut-and-shut piece of bedroom game-making that has been beaten out of mainstream games, but that the mobile marketplaces excel at.Developer Colaboratory clearly belongs to the A-Team school of game design. If you can make a serviceable armoured car out of a golf cart and a fridge, why not try making a new game by sticking two existing and completely unrelated concepts together? So Puzzlejuice welds a Boggle-style word game to Tetris in the most blunt manner imaginable, bolts on a few leftover components of Bejeweled, and bursts triumphantly through the suspiciously feeble locked garage door of your mind. The result is as crudely effective as you'd imagine. It's simple: slot the falling Tetrominos (though smaller three-block pieces do appear on the easier difficulty) together by rotating, dragging and dropping in the time-honoured fashion. However, once you've completed a row it doesn't disappear, but turns into letters. You then have to make words of three letters or longer out of these to clear the screen and earn points. Surprisingly for a visually simple game, when things get busy, Puzzlejuice has a tendency for slowdown on my trusty 3GS.
You're given the maximum flexibility for word-making; you can link letters in all eight directions and change course at any point mid-word. This is both a blessing and a curse, expanding your options but taxing your visual recognition to the max - the best potential words are extremely hard to spot in the alphabetic tangle. Bear in mind that you're having to divide your attention between this and slotting the falling blocks together as they rain down with increasing speed. All word games should have a Qu tile.
Thankfully, making words clears all adjacent blocks in an explosion. On the default 'hard' mode, any word does this, but on the tougher 'Euro Extreme' (which you will probably graduate to on your first play), only words of five letters and longer do. Occasionally, power-ups drop that help out when cleared by exploding, freezing dropping blocks, drilling through tiles and so on; you unlock these by clearing objectives, such as chaining 20 words of at least four letters in length. Finally, there's a match-three element, where tapping groups of three or more blocks of the same colour will turn them into letters, which can be a life-saver when you can't find a word or fill a row. There's plenty going on in Puzzlejuice, then, so much that it doesn't really need permutations - and sure enough, the 90-second Zen Mode Extreme score attack seems superfluous. The game must play beautifully on an iPad, but on a phone's screen, making words is a little fiddly; a text-editing-style "picture in picture" magnifying glass helps, but failing the game because you can't make a word you can see quickly enough is galling. It's the only way Puzzlejuice frustrates that's not intentional. It's a real mental plate-spinning exercise - you need to balance the tactical creation of scoring opportunities against time spent looking for words and the constant, nagging need to slot falling blocks and clear dangerous towers. Puzzlejuice creates challenge by making you do three or four simple things at once; as such, it's an enjoyably stern test, but one without a great deal of balance, integrity or elegance in the design. For Ł1.99, the legions of puzzle masochists won't care.

Proview Technology, which currently uses the 'iPad' name on several of its products including computer monitors, stands to win up to $1.6 billion and an apology from Apple for allegedly infringing upon Proview's trademarked name to use on its bestselling tablet. Proview International, which owns subsidiaries Proview Technology in Shenzhen and Proview Electronics in Taiwan, originally registered the name 'iPad' in Taiwan in 2000 and mainland China in 2001. Proview eventually sued Apple in 2011, and even though the Cupertino-based company retaliated with a counter-suit of its own, Apple lost the case in local Chinese courts. Depending on the court's findings, Apple could be fined anywhere from $38 million to the $1.6 billion that Proview is seeking. In addition to the money, Proview also wants Apple to apologize. 'We have prepared well for a long-term legal battle,' said one of Proview's lawyers."

Today Google announced the availability of a beta version of its Chrome browser for Android. Unfortunately, it's limited to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) devices. Google is trying to keep Chrome fast and easy to use, and part of that involved redesigning tabs so they work more naturally with touchscreens. 'You can flip or swipe between an unlimited number of tabs using intuitive gestures, as if you're holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hands, each one a new window to the web.' They've also including synchronization functionality that allows you to move from desktop browsing to phone or tablet browsing and pick up right where you left off."

Apple has issued a statement warning its developers to avoid services which "manipulate" the App Store charts, cautioning that doing so could endanger a studio's development licence.
A post on the company's developer blog makes clear that Apple expects the charts to be a reflection of legitimate downloads alone, a clear response to recent allegations that some companies are using bot services which offer app downloads in return for payment to push games into the coveted front page positions on the storefront.
"Once you build a great app, you want everyone to know about it," reads a short entry on the site. "However, when you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts.
"Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership. Get helpful tips and resources on marketing your apps the right way from the App Store Resource Center."
Yesterday, claims emerged that third-parties were promising top 25 positions for as little as $5000.
It's far from the first piece of policing that the Cupertino multinational has had to conduct on its customer curated system. Last year, Tapjoy was scolded for offering "pay-per-install" packages to developers to promote their titles - something which was at least partially responsible for changes to the Apple ranking algorithm which saw users who download with a promotional code no longer able to rate apps.
Tapjoy's CEO Mihir Shah responded angrily to those changes, claiming that they promoted stagnation, but failed to change the policy.
More recently, Apple has found itself embroiled in scandal over copycat titles, acting to remove the works of Anton Sinelnikov, a Russian indie developer whose games were judged to be direct copies of other successful apps.
Another case, brought by Triple Town developer Spry Fox against 6Waves Lolapps, is as yet unresolved.

Still baffled by the Tablet P's existence? Well, Sony's here to help! Earlier today, our brethren over at Engadget Chinese met up with Takeshi Goto, the head honcho of VAIO and mobile product producing, to learn how the Android clamshell went from several mockups (one of which was made out of a $4 wallet) right after the PDA era to the final product today. Between those two pivotal points on the timeline, Sony explored screen sizes between five to seven inches before settling on 5.5 due to hardware limitation; though the entire device ended up being about the same size as the 7-inch mockup. Later on, the manufacturer hooked up a couple of VAIO UXs to power a Nintendo DS-like dual-screen prototype -- that was when Windows and x86 were under consideration, before Sony eventually went with Android on ARM. Intrigued? Hit the link below to take a look at the aforementioned goodies.

Last month, consumers literally went wild for the iPhone 4S when it launched in China. A rabble fought in the streets of Beijing andegged the Apple Store when it refused to open to the irate crowd.
Now, Jinghua.cn reports that iPhone 4Ss operating under China Mobile SIM cards have a glitch that prevents users from turning the device on, while an additional fault prevents the phone from receiving calls even when the screen displays full signal.
Apple's customer service team have addressed the issue and are currently working on a permanent solution. In the meantime, consumers have been offered a temporary fix, which requires upgrading to a new iOS and altering the device's network settings, though it's unclear whether this will compute with all of the faulty iPhones, according to the report.
However, there's also speculation that it may be a faulty batch of China Mobile SIMs, rather than an Apple error.
The discovery marks Apple's second 4S blunder. The first, of course, was virtual assistant Siri unlocking devicesto unauthorised users.

The dev folk over at Tapbots have just unleashed a major overhaul to their famed Twitter client. Tweetbot 2.0 not only sees the addition of a few new traits and a design refresh, but it's also on the receiving end of some welcomed iPad compatibility (iOS 5 only). Though, it's worth mentioning the app isn't universal -- so you'll have to cough up three bucks for the slate variant, even if you've already got the iPhone edition. Amongst the new goodies is a renovated timeline view with pic thumbnails, an optional New Tweets bar, auto-refresh, and a one-tap system for links. If you're still rockin' the officialbirdie app, but are looking for something a bit different, then hit up the source link below to scan through the rest of the features and see if it's enough to make you fly the coop.

You may remember that during the TouchPad fire sale, a few slates slipped out with a rather primitive Froyo build on them. Well, HP doesn't seem to know how the tablets hit shelves with Android on board, but its decided to release the source code for the OS nonetheless. Devs had previously called on the company to hand over the code, but the request was refused since HP had never intended for TouchPads to ship with Android, and thus were not obligated to abide by the open-source requirements. As a gesture of goodwill to the community (and under a certain amount of pressure from it) the former purveyor of all things webOS has reversed course though, and let the TouchPad-specific kernel loose on the internet for others to repurpose as they see fit. Hit up the source link to download it now.

Allows users to wirelessly connect to their iTunes library.
While iTunes has been designed with Apple products in mind, the Airbind app gives Android users access to their iTunes media via wi-fi connection.
Users must download a software client for their PC or Mac, and additionally the app for the smartphone can be retrieved from Android Market.
One syncing is complete, users can access their entire music library from their smartphone as long as they remain connected to wi-fi.
Airbind was founded in 2010 and claims to "hit the nail right on the head" for uniting both the Apple and Android platforms.

Company 'targets San Francisco for major press conference'
Apple could launch the iPad 3 on the same week and in the same city as the Game Developers Conference, a new report claims.
John Paczkowski, the All things Digital journalist who correctly predicted the unveiling of the iPhone 4S when the rest of the tech press was fizzing with wild guesses, now claims Apple has chosen the first week of March to debut its next generation tablet computer.
“The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts [(pictured)], Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these,” Paczkowski wrote in his report.
If true it would mean Tim Cook’s company would be holding a press conference just a few hundred yards away from the Moscone Center where GDC takes place.
This would not mark the first time an Apple and GDC have been separated by just a thin stretch of San Franciscan highway. Last year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs were both addressing their respective industries in two keynotes that had aligned with each other. The chance occurrence was given an even eerier quality when Iwata spent much of his time warning developers about the threat of Apple’s digital games platform.

Following the precedent set by commercial airliners, the U.S. Air Force plans to buy up to 18,000 iPads for its Air Mobility Command (AMC), replacing heavy flight bags with light and efficient Apple iPad 2s for the crews that fly cargo aircraft. The devices will reportedly be used by the crews on the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster aircraft. There are several benefits to using electronic flight bags instead of physical versions. For one, the iPad can instantly update charts electronically, while the AMC would require flying charts get reprinted every 28 days to stay up-to-date. By cutting publication printing and distribution costs, and exchanging 70 pounds of paper for a 1.3-pound iPad, the Air Force can save some serious cash, including more than $1.2 million worth of fuel per year."

Epic Games has announced that it has secured the rights to the Fighting Fantasy series for its Unreal Engine-powered iOS development contest, Make Something Unreal.
The deal means that games made by the four teams selected to take part in Make Something Unreal Live, a game jam to be held at the Gadget Show Live 2012 in April, will be based on the beloved series of role-playing books created by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson, specifically The Warlock Of Firetop Mountain, The Citadel Of Chaos, Deathtrap Dungeon, and Armies Of Death. All four games will be released on the iOS App Store.
Ian Livingstone said: "Steve Jackson and I are delighted to see our Fighting Fantasy books being developed as iOS games by new teams of talented and enthusiastic students. It will be really interesting to see how our IP will be captured and interpreted for the iOS platform.
"The evolving game industry is constantly on the lookout for design innovation and new ways of playing. I am really looking forward to playing one of my books as a game."
The four finalists were selected last November following a game jam at the University Of Bedfordshire. The teams are working under the stewardship of mentors from Deep Red Studios, Mediatonic, Appcrowd, and Epic Games.
Make Something Unreal Live, co-sponsored by Train2Game, takes place during The Gadget Show Live 2012, which runs from April 10 to 15 at the Birmingham NEC.

Much-hyped food app makes its debut on the Microsoft OS.
The app lets pizza lovers find their nearest store, browse the menu and then place their order. They can also customise pizzas by base, size and toppings.
It's been a wild success on other formats: the iPhone app alone has generated over Ł10m in sales in the past year.
Indeed, 13 per cent of all Domino's digital sales come through a tablet or smartphone.
The Windows 7 version was developed by Vexed Digital, and is being released at a time when the OS passed 60,000 compatible apps.

Well, possibly. You never know with that shadowy Cupertino lot.

Apple will launch the next-generation iPad 3 in March at an event in San Francisco, according to a All Things D report.
A March event is firmly in the anticipated launch frame already expected by analysts and perhaps mindful of a raft of new competition expected later in the year with Windows 8 devices, rumours of the iPad 3 specifications hint at a substantial leap forward over the former device.
Among the anticipated enhancements for the new Apple tablet is a faster chip, like a quad-core 'A5', massively higher resolution 'Retina' display resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and potentially 4G mobile 'LTE' support.
If the launch event goes ahead like former events, retail availability will follow around a week after.

While 43 per cent prefer wi-fi to 3G when abroad.
We recently reported that more than half of Brits don't know what data roaming is.
Now, cloud communications firm MACH and researcher YouGov say that almost a quarter of smartphone and tablet owners don't use data roaming at all.
Meanwhile, 45 per cent have not used 3G at all while abroad and 43 per cent choose to connect to PAYG wi-fi.
Lokdeep Singh, chief technology officer, MACH, said: "These results demonstrate that wi-fi is a key access technology for mobile data when abroad.
"Operators should look today at how they can successfully market new wi-fi offerings, both to gain market share of existing wi-fi users, and to address the untapped market of smartphone and tablet owners who are currently not using data services when roaming."

For some, Valentine's Day is a sweet occasion. Happy couples the world over will be lounging back, nibbling on an array of chocolate delights before partaking in the annual somersault contest that ensues. You know, like how our parents used to do before they got all old and stuff.
For us loners, the holiday is a day of self-indulgent sobbing and darkness, but it doesn't have to be. If you're in the market for some iOS or Android games, you can snuggle up to Sonic and company through Sega's Valentine's Day sale starting today and running through the 14th.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 and Sonic CD lead the charge of discounted downloads for iOS and Android users, both half off, while iDevices also see considerable price cuts down to $.99 on Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Super Monkey Ball. Gunstar Hero, Altered Beast and Virtua Fighter 2 are also on sale for a buck each.

Well Christmas was an interesting blur of activity. 2012 is looking to be growth, growth, growth. We're currently trying to increase production in order to meet demand and we have a few ideas about how to approach this.
The interesting software news is of course Blutrol which allows you to make most iOS apps work with the iCP - just tell it where you want the inputs to go, there is a great thread about it over on the forum. There are also over a dozen new Apps which support the iCP directly to go on the compatibility list when I get 25 minutes to update it.
2012 will see the 10,000th iCP ship, this will be a major milestone and I hope the first of many - I look forward to letting you know when this happens!
-Craig

Estimated to account for up to 80 per cent of country's tablet market.
Apple's latest milestone will be a kick in the face of bitter rival Samsung, which is struggling to shift tablets in its native South Korea.
Apple's one million devices sold are a combination of iPad and iPad 2, which hold as much as 80 per cent of the country's market, according to the Korea Herald.
The iPads were launched in Korea in November 2010 and April 2011 respectively, meaning the seven-figure milestone has been reached in little over a year. Good news for Apple, as the country is still yet to truly embrace the tablet market.
The report also says the figure only accounts for iPads sold in Korea, meaning that the number of actual active devices in operation could be greater, with eager consumers buying from overseas.
Additionally, wi-fi versions of the iPad account for two-thirds of all sales.

Is Apple releasing too many products to keep consumers hooked?
Apple's incredible fourth quarter in 2011 included 37 million iPhone sales, 15.4 million iPad sales, but just five million Mac sales. That's probably what drove iOS to overtake its desktop counterpart in terms of web traffic.
Market researcher Chitika says the gap between iOS and OS X web market shares has been narrowing since August 2011. iOS has increased by almost 50 per cent, while OS X fell by 25 per cent.
This month, iOS secured 8.15 per cent of all web traffic, while Mac OS X retains just 7.96 per cent, according to the report.
While Apple is known for committed users, Chitika says it's likely users have moved to Apple's mobile devices from Mac because of the lower cost and also to cater to the growing on-the-move lifestyle that users have.
Additionally, the research firm points out that Apple's regular product releases could be the company's downfall, prompting consumers to look elsewhere for alternative items.

OEM's first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet features Face Unlock and AllShare.
The seven inch Galaxy Tab 2 is the first major upgrade to the range since the first device in 2010.
It is not a radical update in hardware terms, with 1GHz dual core processor, three-megapixel rear-facing camera, Bluetooth capabilities and HSPA+ connectivity.
So it's really all about software. The new Tab offers the various Samsung Hub range (Music, Reader and Games), and now includes the new Video Hub, which offers over 1,000 film titles for purchase or rent.
It's all accessible via an upgraded Touchwiz user interface while a new service, S Suggest, offers real-time recommendations of apps suited to customers’ tastes directly on the home screen.
But the two most eye catching additions are probably Face Unlock and All Share.

US chain Meijer strips $70 from the 16GB wi-fi version.
In December, we reported that the iPad 3 was expected to launch in the first quarter of this year.
Now, rumours are building as Apple Insider says Meijer has cut $70 from the price of the 16GB wi-fi iPad 2, now falling to $429.
A significant move, given that Apple products are famously never reduced without notable events such as Black Friday or Christmas coming up, or alternatively the release of a new device.
Presumably, Meijer's sale is in an attempt to clear stock ahead of the iPad 3's speculated March unveiling.
The tablet is predicted to run LTE and an A6 processor. Additionally, Apple is reportedly auditioning apps to demonstrate at the iPad 3 launch, just as it did last year with the iPad 2 and iMovie.

If you were expecting a radically different-looking tablet from the iPad 2, prepare for a minor letdown. In the same way Apple upgraded the iPhone 4 into the iPhone 4S, the exterior of the iPad 3 mirrors that of the iPad 2, despite completely renovated and upgraded innards. iLab Factory reportedly provided Sharp with the necessary parts to build the high-resolution iPad 3 display, and in a company blog post, various iPad 3 components are displayed alongside those of the iPad 2 for quick comparison. In addition to a new camera mount that will reportedly match or improve upon the 8-megapixel camera system in the iPhone 4S, the post also revealed that the iPad 3 will be approximately 1 mm thicker than its predecessor to house Apple's upgraded components, including a bigger battery, an improved camera, and a dual-LED lit system to make the 2048 x 1536 display even brighter.

The Fair Labor Association has responded to a request from Apple, and will begin to inspect the Foxconn manufacturing plant this week.
"We believe that workers everywhere have the right to a safe and fair work environment, which is why we've asked the FLA to independently assess the performance of our largest suppliers," said Apple CEO.
"The inspections now under way are unprecedented in the electronics industry, both in scale and scope, and we appreciate the FLA agreeing to take the unusual step of identifying the factories in their reports."
Foxconn manufactures hardware for a number of industry titans, including Apple, Sony and Microsoft. If the name is familiar it's almost certainly due to the negative press the Chinese factory has received regarding the treatment of its workers.
The inspection will include interviews with the workers and management and checks of both working and living areas, as many of the staff live in dormitory style accommodation.
Combined with inspections of Quanta and Pagatron, this will mean that over 90 per cent of Apple's manufactured products will be from an FLA checked facility.

The invites haven't even been sent out and yet the frenzied speculation about what Tim Cook will whip out on stage at next month's purported announcement has begun. The Wall Street Journal believes Cupertino's planning to produce a smaller, 8-inch slate to partner its 9.7-inch flagship. Unnamed sources at the company's suppliers say it'll pack a screen with a resolution close to the 1024 x 768 display on the current model. This jibes with what we've heard about the iPad 3 toting a Retina Display -- unless the smaller unit is aimed at budget buyers. The report claims test panels are being produced by AU Optronics and LG Display and that this model might also run on LTE. It's probably fair to point out that Apple is famous for producing prototypes in a wide variety of sizes that will never see the light of day, so don't get your hopes up too soon.

Murmurs of an iPad 3 on the horizon not doing it for you? How about a new pseudo-3D interface? A patent filing has whet our appetites with the possibility (that's what it is; a possibility) of a future Appledevice capable of gauging depth and displaying a 3D environment based on the user's eye movement. On-screen content would adjust to your eye movement, expanding items where ever your eyesight falls. It would also create a "virtual 3D operating system environment," where the user would feel like the UI projects beyond the two-dimensional screen. The patent includes details on 'realistic' drop shadows for icons and other OS furniture based on the degree and angle of ambient light. The filing, from April 2010, says that the technology would use an accelerometer, GPS and 'gyrometer' to reference the placement of the device and report on its movements. Sound interesting? Those in need of more foggy details and line drawings can hit up the full patent request at the source below.

February 14th, 2012, 13:54 Posted By: wraggster

Government authorities and retailers have reportedly begun removing iPads from stores in China this morning, in apparent response to a ruling issued in December. According to China's Hebei Youth Daily, local representatives of the country's Administrations of Industry and Commerce (AIC) have started confiscating Apple's tablet from retail outlets, with some merchants are voluntarily removing the device from their storefronts as a pre-emptive measure. The scope of this operation remains unclear, thoughChina.com reports that as of 5:00 PM yesterday, authorities had seized some 45 iPad 2s. Retailers who voluntarily removed their iPads apparently did so to protect their stocks from confiscation, and are reportedly continuing to sell the tablet behind the counter. These reports come nearly two months after Apple lost a trademark lawsuit against Proview Technology, which successfully defended its ownership of the iPad name within China. We're still waiting to see whether this is part of a larger nationwide campaign and Apple has yet to comment, but we'll update this post as soon as we hear more.
Update: China's iFeng is now reporting that these seizures took place in the city of Shijiazhuang, as part of what appears to be an isolated campaign.

There's been plenty of controversy regarding the visual similarities between NimbleBit's popular Tiny Tower and Zynga's Dream Heights, but now the public can check out the full monty. Zynga announced that Dream Heights, which "surely isn't the first of many great games already in this category" according to the publisher, is now widely available. Zynga describes Dream Heights as the "most social" game of its kind, allowing players to invite their Facebook friends to the mobile title.
As of this writing there are two polar reviews:
1 star: "Simply awful and shameful attempt to capitalize on the success of Tiny Tower."
5 stars: "Dream Heights is beautiful, fun and polished. Another must-play from Zynga."
Check out Dream Heights and let us know what you think.

Since Apple introduced Siri on the iPhone 4S, mobile assistants seems to keep appearing and Speaktoit is the latest one to do so.
The voice-controlled iOS app allows users to call people, update social networks, play music and make notes.
Additionally, Speaktoit claims to be able to rival Siri by searching maps outside of the US, offering regular updates and compatibility with iPhones 3GS and 4. Users are also able to customise the appearance of their assistant.
The app was originally developed for Android, boasting 1.4 million downloads and receiving a 'Top Ten Android App of 2011' title from the New York Times.
It's priced at $1.99 on the Apple App Store, but the first 100,000 downloads today (Valentine's Day) will receive the app for free.

A new survey has revealed the top ten most memorable logos voted for by UK start-ups and small business owners. Unsurprisingly, Apple takes the crown.
Small Business Logos polled businesses online to find out what makes well-known logos effective. It was also hoping to uncover trends and tips to help businesses when it comes to creating their own logos.
Participants were able to select from a range of well-known and iconic brands across a variety of sectors such as technology, retail, business products and services, consumers brands and more.
And the winners, along with a bit of analysis from Small Business Logos, are:
Apple: Clean, modern and extremely easy to reproduce
BBC: Simple, memorable and works well on TV, online and in-print
Nike: Suggestive of movement, ideal for a sports brand, and works well on the side of a trainer
Amazon: Embodying the company’s philosophy: everything from A to Z, delivered with a smile
Google: Strong primary colours, enhanced by ‘Google doodles’
London Underground: The capital’s most instantly recognised logo, the shape recalling the tube’s tunnels
UPS: Brown is symbolic of parcel paper, with the shield suggesting security
American Express: Squares and block lettering indicate strength and trust
Sky: A versatile logo that supports brand extension: SkyNews, SkyHD, SkyMovies etc
HSBC: The only logo in the top ten to use a very traditional serif font, more commonly associated with business and finance, suggesting authority
Lucy Smith, marketing and e-commerce director for Small Business Logos, said: “Logos are a crucial part of a business’ identity, and, as our winners prove, over time they become important entities in their own right, instantly conjuring up the values and key messages of a particular brand.
“We’ve taken a close look at what made our top ten to help businesses make informed choices when it comes to their own branding. Simplicity and the ability to reproduce in a range of different sizes, media and on products, is key. Think about how colour, symbols and shapes might represent what you do or the sector you operate in – Apple’s silver is widely associated with technology. If you have a growth plan factor this in to your thinking when briefing the initial logo; consider how versatile it is if your business develops?
“Creating a strong, memorable logo can really enhance the success of your business. Use the clues provided by the UK’s market leaders to make your company’s branding relevant, clear and on-target. And if I can give you one piece of advice, keep it simple.”

Shares in world's most valuable company surpass $500
Entertainment giant Apple is edging closer to an unprecedented $500 billion valuation as its shares breach the $500 dollar mark for the first time.
Apple stock is currently trading at $503 at the time of going to press, marking the first time the company has surpassed the half-thousand-dollar threshold. As of Monday its valuation was calculated at $469 billion.
Five years ago Apple was trading at $53 dollars per share, but the trailblazing success of the iPad, iPhone Mac, iPod and App Store has rocketed shares skywards.
The company, now valued the biggest in the world, is worth more than Google, Goldman Sachs, General Motors, Ford, Starbucks and Boeing combined.
Strong increases in iPhone, iPad and Mac sales helped Apple generate record sales and profit for the final three months of 2011.
The show-stopping success comes amid rumours that Apple will reveal its next device, the iPad 3, at a San Francisco press conference in March.

67 per cent for iPhone and 33 per cent for iPad.
A new report by European advertising network madvertise and app guide AppZapp said 255,922 apps launched on the UK App Store in 2011 – that's around 21,326 apps per month, spiking in December to reach 28,992 apps, ahead of Christmas.
iPhone secured two-thirds of apps, with lifestyle, education and games sectors experiencing respective growth rates of 106 per cent, 99 per cent and 94 per cent.
Meanwhile, the third of apps that were developed for iPad were dominated by educational ones, experiencing a growth rate of 205 per cent.
Books proved to be the least popular app market across both platforms, but Apple will look to change that with its iBooks initiative, which sold 350,000 textbooks, in three days.

80 per cent of African, Indian, and Chinese smartphone users will have one.
New NPD In-Stat research says the low-cost Android smartphone segment is comprised primarily of Android 2.2 or 2.3 devices, using EDGE and housing processors running at 600MHz or lower.
Devices cost $150 or less, with early competitors in the market including Huawei, MicroMax, Motorola, Samsung, Spice, and ZTE.
It reckons a single-core EDGE chip sells for under $10, although some manufacturers will purchase from the grey market where they don't pay licensing fees, royalties, or taxes for the products they produce.
NPD believes unit shipments for low-cost Android smartphones will approach 340 million worldwide in 2015. We can assume the 80 per cent figure for emerging markets refers only to the smartphone sector, rather than all mobile devices.
Allen Nogee, research director at NPD In-Stat, reckons there will be some competition despite the momentum of Android. he said: “Samsung has bada, and Nokia is developing Meltemi. In addition, Microsoft has stated that it wants to sell Windows Phone in these developing regions as well and could aggressively lower prices to gain market share.

In the wake of news that the iPhone app Path uploads users' entire contact lists without permission, Forbes dug up a study from a group of researchers at the University of California at Santa Barbara and the International Security Systems Lab that aimed to analyze how and where iPhone apps transmit users' private data. Not only did the researchers find that one in five of the free apps in Apple's app store upload private data back to the apps' creators that could potentially identify users and allow profiles to be built of their activities; they also discovered that programs in Cydia, the most popular platform for unauthorized apps that run only on 'jailbroken' iPhones, tend to leak private data far less frequently than Apple's approved apps. The researchers ran their analysis on 1,407 free apps (PDF) on the two platforms. Of those tested apps, 21 percent of official App Store apps uploaded the user's Unique Device Identifier, for instance, compared with only four percent of unauthorized apps

Companies and schools that have bought into the whole iPadthing need a place to store and charge their tablets without running miles of extension cords and power strips. Dukane clearly sees an untapped market here, and has launched the MCCD1 and MCC1. Both are caster-mounted, fire and drill resistent cabinets designed to dock and lock piles of iPads. The MCCD1 has space for up to 32 of the iOS tablets and can both charge and sync them while keeping them organized and safe. The MCC1 holds just 30 and can't sync the slates, but it will keep them juiced and locked down between uses. The MCCD1 is available starting at $2,250 while the MCC1 is a slightly more affordable $1,260. Looking for more info? Hit up the source to download PDF fact sheets.

New devices will be rolled to portion of 17,000 employees.
RIM is currently trying to revive its shelf life, with development on BlackBerry 10 and a new Android app platform, which allows conversion to BlackBerry.
However, it isn't soon enough as US federal government body, the General Services Administration, is watering down use of RIM's smartphones, with the introduction of iPhones and Android-powered devices, according to Reuters.
In an interview, Casey Coleman, chief information officer, GSA, said: "We actively seek to be progressive in our adoption of new technologies so that we can learn the lessons which will inform our client and customer agencies as they seek to go down a similar path."
Initially, RIM was selected a secure means of mobile communications, but rival devices have managed to match BlackBerrys for security, leading to the arrival of direction to Apple and Google phones.
Additionally, the firm's four-day power outage last year, can't have won RIM any favours.

Accounts for almost one-third of all mobile device sales.
The near half billion smartphone units sold in 2011, is up by 58 per cent from 2010, according to researcher Gartner.
Meanwhile, Q4 smartphone sales reached 149 million devices, which is a 47 per cent growth on Q4 2010.
As we reported, Apple became the top smartphone manufacturer in Q4 thanks to the iPhone 4S. However, it was Chinese low-end manufacturer ZTE that experienced the fastest growing adoption behind high-end Apple, shipping 18.9 million units to rise by 71 per cent on the previous year.
The boost for sales to ZTE and fellow China-based firm Huawei, came as they rolled out into new markets and improved their user experience.
Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "Western Europe and North America led most of the smartphone growth for Apple during the fourth quarter of 2011. In Western Europe the spike in iPhone sales in the fourth quarter saved the overall smartphone market after two consecutive quarters of slow sales."

While malware across all platforms grows by 155 per cent.
Mobile phone attacks are showing no signs of slowing, as mobile malware has more than doubled, according to mobile security analyst Juniper Networks.
The firm examined more than 790,000 apps, across all mobile OSs to discover Android was the key victim, which received a malware attack rise of 3,325 per cent, across the last seven months of 2011.
Spyware and SMS Trojans made up most of the malware, withe 63 per cent and 36 per cent respectively. The attacks are growing in number, as hackers try to find new ways to profit from gaining access to mobile devices.
While Google's OS seems to offer free entry, Apple's iOS remains difficult to penetrate, though researchers managed to infiltrate the App Store with an unapproved app.
Additionally, 'fake installers', is the growing malware type, charging users for a pirated app, which should be cost-free, while lost phones also present easy access for crooks, according to the report.

Attempts to race Windows 8 to the finish line.
Thus far, Android's newest OS - Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) - has only been introduced on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, providing it with one per cent installation across all Android devices.
Now, despite ICS only arriving in Q4 2011, Digitimes claims Google may launch Android 'Jelly Bean' (5.0) in Q2, in order to fend off competition from Microsoft tablets, which will receive Windows 8 in Q3.
The report claims Google plans to integrate Jelly Bean with its Chrome netbook OS to allow dual OS designs.
This will enable suppliers to create Android Jelly Bean-only devices, but additionally, Windows 8 tablets that can access the Android OS seamlessly.
Of course, the codename Jelly Bean is just speculation, Google has yet to officially announce what dessert its next OS will be named after.

Sales of smartphones surged ahead in the final quarter of 2011, up 47 per cent according to a new report from market analysts Gartner.
149 million smartphones shipped in the last three months of 2011 with nearly half a billion for the full year. Apple managed to overtake LG to become the third largest maker of mobile phones worldwide and the top single manufacturer of smartphones with 19 per cent of the market.
Google's Android OS continued a bull run in popularity worldwide with just over half of all smartphones shipping with the open source mobile OS. Microsoft managed just 1.9 per cent, down from 3.4 per cent a year earlier.
"Western Europe and North America led most of the smartphone growth for Apple during the fourth quarter of 2011," said Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza.
"In Western Europe the spike in iPhone sales in the fourth quarter saved the overall smartphone market after two consecutive quarters of slow sales."
Chinese Android upstarts ZTE and Huawei were, after Apple, the fastest growing phone makers. Perhaps surprisingly, South Korean LG bucked the Android trend and slipped substantially, down to 4.9 per cent of the market from the heights of 7.1 per cent a year before.
LG's market share collapse was more dramatic than that of RIM and the Blackberry which only slipped from 3.1 to 2.9 per cent in a year.
Gartner noted that Nokia's launch of the Lumia 710 and 800 Windows Phone devices did not realise the sales that would have arrested Microsoft's fall in smartphone market share. Something they'll doubtless be trying to address in 2012.

Mac OS X will support Apple's gaming social network with the release of 10.8 Mountain Lion, a paid update that will be released in summer. Like Game Center on iOS, which was launched in 2010, its Mac incarnation will include support for achievements, scoreboards, online play, game invites and matchmaking, and add cross-platform play and in-game voice chat.
Mountain Lion follows the release of Lion in July 2011 and brings many iOS features closer to Apple's Mac OS. Accordingly, Game Center will allow interoperability between games for iOS and for Mac. Apple claims that Game Center boasts 100 million registered users, and that the App Store features over 20,000 Game Center-enabled games.
This means that it'll be possible for play between Macs and iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, presenting a challenge for game designers to marry mouse-based and touch-based play, but one that would reap massive reward. Apple demoed a racing game being played across iPhone to Mac which reportedly "works very well". Odds that Firemint's Real Racing series will be one of Mac Game Center's first exemplars seem, to us, high.
Mac developers will have access to a developer build of the new OS from today, allowing them to update games and apps to take advantage of its new features.

156m iOS devices sold in 2011, compared to 122m Macs in 28 years.
We know Apple experienced a great fourth quarter last year, with its highest sales to date. Now, the firm's place in the market appears to be so strong that it's leaving its own products behind to eat dust.
In an interview with Fortune, Apple CEO Tim Cook unleashed a stack of stats to show the firm has sold 55 million iPads to date, along with 175 million iPhones and iPod Touch devices has pushed total iOS sales to 316 million in total.
Meanwhile, Macs which have been on the market for almost three decades have only sold 122 million devices in total. That means iOS devices have outpaced Mac sales in almost a tenth of the time.
Of course, this is a winning situation for Apple to be in, especially as Macs experienced the best ever sales in Q4 2011, selling almost five million units.
The iPad 3 is rumoured to be released next month, which is only likely to add even more millions to iOS sales.

The world's starving must be full of sympathy.
New research from security specialist SecurEnvoy says nomophobia – the fear of being without their phone – afflicts 66 per cent of UK consumers.
It also revealed that 41 of people have two phones or more to mitigate against their dread.
Women worry about losing their phones more than men – 70 per cent versus 61 per cent, even though it's men that are more likely to have two phones – scoring 47 per cent and 36 per cent respectively.
Unsurprisingly the 18 to 24s are the most nomophobic at 77 per cent.
SecurEnvoy added that the condition is one the rise, as the first study into nomophobia, conducted four years ago, revealed that 53 per cent of people suffered from it.

Campaign to allow communications via voice, video and GPS.
Smartphones and tablets continue to revolutionise industries, as payment, health, advertising and gaming among just some of the platforms that have been tampered with.
Now, ahead of comms specialists and armed forces gathering in London for the 2012 Tactical Communications conference, a US Army key speaker announced plans to rollout Android tablets and smartphones by March.
The devices will allow users to share live video, GPS coordinates and voice communications to collectively create an "accurate integrated picture of the battlefield."
Michael McCarthy, director of operations for the US Army's Brigade Modernisation Command, said: "It's not just to give them another shiny thing to hang on their equipment carriers."
Additionally, the army is also is continuing to work on producing its own app store to enable soldiers with access to foreign language translation and location-based services.

The team behind indie start up Hutch Games have shared the decision making process that saw its gang of five developers leave Sony to develop iOS titles independently.
"We had had a project cancellation," art director Whill Whitaker told Eurogamer.
"It was an inciting incident. It was just very exciting for us to realise we could do something on Unity. The App Store allowing you to self-publish is a very democratising situation. We were all motivated to take accountability for our own destiny. It was a very exciting thing to try out."
The team was keen to point out that the break from Sony's London studio was enitrely amicable, but explained that they were ready for a more accelerated form of development.
"It didn't happen at a fast enough pace for us," said technical director Sean Turner.
"We would get behind an idea and you didn't have the control to continue or thrust ideas forwards as much as we'd like. So possibly that lack of control was the impeding thing, not lack of creativity."
It was a sentiment that Whitaker backed.
"Console games, which cost upwards of 10 million bucks to make, these companies, like Sony and Microsoft, they can't take quite so many risks with them because there's so much money involved," he added.
"One of the things that attracted me was, let's just do something that's innovative and quick to make and we can just get on and do it and there's a lot less bureaucracy and money men behind it. It's liberating."
Hutch Games formed in June 2011, and just released its iOS racing title, Smash Cops. It is also working with Microsoft Soho Productions on Sesame Street Kinect, providing full time production consulting.

So, have you been following the iPad dispute in China? Wondering exactly who or what this Proviewcompany is and what they're doing with a trademark on the iPad name? Well, wonder no more friends. The company actually stylized the name as iPAD, and it stood for Internet Personal Access Device. They hit the market way back in 1998 and weren't tablets, but all-in-one PCs that looked an awful lot like another machine that debuted that year -- the iMac. Over the course of a decade Proview produced between 10,000 and 20,000 of he 15-inch CRT desktops, before collapsing in 2010 and abandoning its Shenzhen plant, thanks in part to the economic crisis engulfing the globe. Most of its assets, including the iPAD trademark are now the property of eight different banks and its debts exceed $1 billion, which probably explains why the company is demanding so much money from Apple. For more details about the original iPAD and a photo tour of the deserted factory hit up the source links.

Feature phone minority losers.
New data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that smartphones contributed 71.4 per cent of mobile phone sales in the 12 weeks ending January 22nd.
This stunning growth pushed smartphone ownership past 50 per cent.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, said: “For the first time ever, you are now in the minority if you don’t own a smartphone.
"With more people jumping on the bandwagon, there is huge opportunity for both retailers and manufacturers."
The stats also reflected the fightback by iOS after a period of Android creep. Kantar said that Apple its share of the British market from 21.7 per cent a year ago to 29.1 per cent now.

Amazon looks to extinguish the glory of well hung 9.7-inch iPad 2.
The current Kindle Fire measures at seven-inches, but that hasn't stopped it from shipping four million units in under two months.
Now, Amazon plans on moving to bigger and better things by creating a ten-inch Kindle Fire, according to the China Times, citing that Foxconn may receive samples by March.
This would put it in direct competition with premium tablet, the iPad 2, which measures at 9.7-inches.
Additionally, BGR claims the report came after an analyst said Amazon was concentrating on a upgraded seven-inch tablet and a nine-inch tablet for release halfway through the year.
Last week, we reported Apple may be working on a smaller screened iPad, so it seems Amazon may have taken heed of the news.

PowerTrekk solution uses water, fuel cell and battery pack to charge device.
Fuel cell tech developer myFC has created PowerTrekk, a water-based phone charging option that makes using an electrical power source unnecessary.
Of course, that doesn't mean you can charge your phone using H20 alone.
Instead, PowerTrekk comprises a portable battery pack and fuel cell or 'puck'. After adding approximately a tablespoon of water, and connecting a USB-A lead to the PowerTrekk unit and phone, 'instant power' is generated.
The solution has been designed for outdoors enthusiasts and emerging markets, where electricity may be in short supply. It also charges cameras and GPS devices too.
Björn Westerholm, CEO at myFC, said: "From now on, you do not have to rely on having an electricity grid nearby. PowerTrekk water charger gives your mobile phone power anywhere at any time.

Apple's contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry aka Foxconn has reportedly increased the wages paid to factory workers by up to 25 per cent.
What looks like the result of increasing public awareness and media coverage of working conditions at Apple's Chinese factories, a Reuters report says that an entry level position earns 1,800 yuan a month, up from 900 three years ago.
A statement by the company pointed out that wagers were already far higher than the local minimum wage and said that in addition to the wage increase the company would "provide more training opportunities and learning time" in order to "set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry."
It's quite likely that a number of stakeholders have taken part in the move including Apple and the Chinese authorities given that Foxconn is something of a darling of the local industry, manufacturing as it does one of the world's most iconic hardware products in Apple devices.

Developed by Daniel Burford, without permission from Nintendo or the Pokemon company, the description details fabricated press reviews rating the game at five stars.

"A lawyer representing Proview International on Monday announced that the Intermediate People's Court in Huizhou, a city in southern China, ruled that distributors should stop selling iPads in China. From the article: 'The ruling, which was also reported widely in China's state media, may not have a far-reaching effect. In its battle with Apple, Proview is utilizing lawsuits in several places and also requesting commercial authorities in 40 cities to block iPad sales. Apple Inc. said in a statement Monday that its case is still pending in mainland China. The company has appealed to Guangdong's High Court against an earlier ruling in Proview's favor.'"

"Researchers at Georgia Tech university have built a prototype app for touch-screen mobile devices that is vying to be a complete solution for texting without the need to look at a mobile gadget's screen. In theory, it should greatly help the blind interact with mobile phones, but it could help just about anyone looking for a more efficient way to interact. Research has shown that gesture-based texting is a viable solution for eyes-free written communication in the future, making obsolete the need for users to look at their devices while inputting text. The free open-source app, called BrailleTouch, incorporates the Braille writing system used by the visually impaired. Early studies with visually impaired participants proficient in Braille typing have demonstrated that users can input up to 32 words per minute with 92 percent accuracy with the prototype app for the iPhone.

Well, if it looks real, sounds real and is halfway logical, we probably should distrust it all the more. Yes, it's the time when all the rumors, photoshops and general hysteria around Apple's next slab reaches its apex. The photo above was grabbed by the steady hand of sas126, a blurrycam snapper in name only, and posted to Chinese site Weiphone, purporting to be the logic board for the iPad 3. The big news (if true) is the "A5X" silicon, suggesting we'll see an incremental enhancement rather than the wholesale revolutions evident in the A4 and A5 chips that accompanied its predecessors. The SoC (with the Apple logo, to the right of the two Hynix memory modules) carries a date-stamp of 1146, suggesting it was produced in the 46th week of last year. Of course, now that we're getting so close to the actual event, whatever Tim Cook whips out on stage will never match whatever we'd conjured up on our own hearts: so try to dampen down that rampant excitement because we've still got 17 days left to wait.

Extraordinary numbers, but that's what the research says.
Antenna Software's Mobile Business Forecast 2012 polled 1,000 CIOs and business unit leaders in the UK and US.
It revealed that 43 per cent of them are currently working on a mobile app for their customers – while 42 per cent are making one for their employees and 45 per cent are building a mobile website.
Amazing stats, which you have to assume reflect a pretty tech-centric sample.
Anyhow, for all their industriousness, there appears to be much frustration with mobile development.
Antenna found that 45 per cent of IT and business decision makers are dissatisfied with the speed at which the mobile projects they commission get to market.

Fake game splurge on Android Market.
The problem of rogue apps seems to get worse by the week, and threatens to de-rail the progress of the Android platform in particular.
These products pose as real, well-known games, and once installed re-direct the user to ads or – worse – set up diallers that sap credit from the user's account.
They can also post ratings and share themselves on social networks for further propagation.
Malware specialist Trend notified Google of the rogue apps, which removed them soon after.
Tend analyst Kervin Alintanahin blogged: “Quite obviously, this trend of apps being equipped with aggressive advertising methods — especially those related to search monetization — will be seen for quite a while. Thus, users are advised to be extra careful when installing apps.”

EA's Bernard Kim said: "We want this to be one of the biggest titles this year. We've invested a lot. It's absolutely a top-tier development priority for us. Hardcore Simpsons fans will get a lot out of it."
The game will be a free download, supported by microtransactions, with players able to buy doughtnuts the in-game currency. No firm release date has been announced, but Tapped Out is expected on the App Store in the next few weeks, with an Android version to follow a few months later.

February 22nd, 2012, 00:42 Posted By: wraggster
The continuing value of the App Store to developers was under scrutiny at the BAFTA-hosted Games Question Time event last night.
An expert panel composed of UKIE head Jo Twist, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard, Frontier Developments' David Braben and Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley debated the likely effects of the increasing demand for high production values on iOS devices.
Jason Kingsley agreed that the emphasis for a product to be "as polished as possible" was greater than ever, but that the investment necessary for that standard of execution can still be offset in a way that's impossible on consoles.
"Instead of making 20 hours worth of gameplay, you can make an hour's worth of gameplay, see how people react," he said. "The acid test is what people do with it... That's brilliant feedback for us; actually what people do when they play the game."
However, Mark Gerhard stated that the problem Kingsley desrcibed - of producing what is, "effectively a gold master" - already exists on the iOS platform, and that the "next wave of iterations" of Apple hardware could unbalance the economics of development and "kill the App Store."
"Everything's moving online," Gerhard said. "This is controversial, but the mobile bubble will burst this year and the social bubble will burst, too."
I think that, bar a handful of winners, nobody makes money on Apple's platform. It's great for consumers, not good for developers, and that's going to be the death of it
Mark Gerhard, CEO, Jagex
"There just isn't the money there. The only people that are winning right now are Apple and consumers. Everyone's rushing to make games for the new iPhone, and in that Apple makes a lot of money, but it's a race to zero."
Gerhard noted that Jagex has had four number one games on the App Store, but none made more than Ł3,000 to Ł4,000 a month profit. The amount of revenue versus the necessary resources is "a problem" for independent developers, and Gerhard believes that the same is true of all "walled-garden" services.
"I think any closed platform, be it Microsoft, be it PlayStation Vita, XBLA, PSN, the App Store, ultimately are taking such a big chunk that people just aren't making money. Facebook, too."
"I think that fundamentally, bar a handful of winners that Apple is keeping, nobody makes money on their platform. It's great for consumers, not good for developers, and that's going to be the death of it."
Gerhard addressed the widely held belief that the App Store is "the next frontier" for game developers. Like all closed platforms, he argued, the App Store is subject to "lethargy" in the form of approval processes and the need to adhere to guidelines.
Jagex has found a huge amount of success on the open web, and Gerhard believes that improvements in browser technology over the next 12 to 24 months will make it possible to create immersive 3D games.
As a result, the browser will emerge as a "new platform" that offers developers a greater share of revenue and greater control over their products.
"I would say as a survival strategy you want to leapfrog that," he said. "You want to go purely straight to browser."
"Online we can launch and we can iterate hourly. We can use data to kind of tone and shape the content experience. We can be that agile. We don't have to release, see what happens, make some changes, and re-release weeks later."
However, David Braben argued that the biggest problem facing developers is the "route to market," or actually getting the product into the hands of the audience. The App Store may not be ideal in this regard, but it has clear advantages over the open web.
Gerhard had already stated his belief that "new channels" would emerge to aid discovery of browser games on the open web, but Braben countered that any such entities would also be closed systems.
"The advantage of The App Store is that it's a place that focuses you; you're seeing what's coming out," Braben said.
"With the internet it's a lot, lot harder. I think you're right that there will be routes to the internet that will essentially do what you're talking about, but they will again be closed."
"There will be a gatekeeper otherwise there isn't value to it, in a bizarre way."

What the Atrix 4G first promised, it looks like the folks at Canonical may deliver. Think back to CES 2011, when Motorola showed us a future where our phone was the only computing device we would need -- only to leave us wanting when its webtop app didn't deliver the requisite functionality for such a future. Well, it turns out Ubuntu now runs on multi-core Android devices and your handset can grant a full desktop experience when docked with a display and a keyboard. It's a customized version of Ubuntu that plays nice with Android, the two OS's sharing data and services while running simultaneously. So, you can still access telephony and texts from the Ubuntu environment while enjoying all the computing capabilities it has to offer, including: Ubuntu TV, virtualization tools for running Windows applications, desktop web browsers, and Ubuntu apps built for ARM. It isn't clear exactly what hardware you'll need to run Ubuntu on a handset, but Canonical has said it works on multi-core devices with HDMI and USB connections. We'll get more info next week when it's shown off at MWC, but until then you'll have to settle for the source below and PR after the break.

The last time the iPhone dallied into eager Chinese hands there was more than a spot of bother. Hopefully, China Telecom's announcement that it'll be getting the 4S on March 9th will give retail stores enough time to prepare. It'll be up for pre-order online from March 2nd, starting from free on contract, and available in the usual 16GB, 32GB and 64GB varieties. The news came via the China Telecom website yesterday, with CEO Wang Xiaochu confirming in a press release this morning (Chinese time). So if Nokia thought it would have the network's biggest release in March, it might have to think again.

Well, this is definitely the craziest thing to happen in wrestling games in quite some time -- and wrestling is a sport built entirely on human insanity. WWF WrestleFest, the classic arcade game by Technos, has been updated for release on iOS by THQ. The new "WWE Wrestlefest" has smoother graphics and an updated roster of wrestlers (a rostler, if you will) including John Cena and Randy Orton, alongside old-school wrestlers like the late "Macho Man" Randy Savage. It's also been modernized with "an extensive downloadable content program."
The app is available in a free "Lite" version and a $2.99 "Premium" version for iPhone, and both "Lite" and paid for iPad.
THQ also plans to release this new WrestleFest on XBLA, PSN, Android, and PC, sometime in 2012. So we hope the new version is good.

Choose your tribe and defend against the enemy using tactics and strategy.
Mobile games developer Gamevil is behind the role-playing app, which invites players to use their wits and strategise their attacks against enemies.
The story is based around three tribes that are locked in battle in the land of Drusilla.
Players can choose to dive into war as any of the Elven, Hume or Beast tribes on offer to secure control of the region.
Kyu Lee, VP and head of Gamevil USA, says: "We are extremely excited to present another free title to the Android Market that possesses the in-game depth and quality of our other RPG products.
"We hope that with Arel Wars, our hardcore fans as well as new users will be able to enjoy the challenges of this game through its unique and simple RPG style."

Up from 20.1 per cent in January 2011.
Google's Android OS appears to be the people's choice, securing over a third of Britain's active mobile phones as of January 2012, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech via the Guardian.
The result enabled Android to climb from third place and overtake former leader Apple, which had shares fall to 28.5 per cent from 29.2 per cent in January 2011.
Meanwhile, RIM climbed into third place from fourth despite losing 0.6 per cent of users and the BlackBerry firm can thank Nokia for the climb.
The Finnish firm's near obsolete Symbian OS halved its 26.7 per cent of users to 13.1 per cent as Nokia chose Windows Phone to power future smartphones.
That said, both Nokia and Microsoft have a lot of work to do, managing to secure just 2.2 per cent of the market.

While one-third use the devices at dinner, presumably for texting and not talking.
Research from Lloyds TSB shows the handbook of phone manners has been thrown out of the window. Over half of UK phone users talk on the device when in bed, while 34 per cent use their phones at dinner.
Mobiles even seem too irresistible during calls of nature with 24 per cent admitting they've used their phone in a public toilet.
Additionally, three-quarters use their phone in the street, 63 per cent use them on public transport, while 12 per cent have used their phone in a meeting or during a presentation.
Results also show 11 per cent have used their phone at a theatre, cinema or concert, which rises to 29 per cent for under-25 year olds. Nine per cent have even used their phone during a wedding or christening.
However, all isn't lost as 70 per cent still consider it unacceptable to use a phone at the theatre, cinema or concert hall. Worryingly, that figure falls to 51 per cent for people considering it inappropriate during dinner at a restaurant, falling further still to 21 per cent against use in a public toilet.

Microsoft has denied rumours that the firm's eponymous Office suite is destined for Apple's iPad, saying that leaked images of an iOS Office were "not Microsoft's software".
Murdoch-owned iPad Newspaper The Daily claimed that an iPad Office was set to be submitted to Apple for approval "soon" and detailed a "hands-on" with a "working prototype".
However the New York Times reported that a Microsoft spokesperson said: "The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumours and speculation", but wouldn't be drawn further on the matter.
Notably the statement did not say that Microsoft had no plans for an iOS office. The Daily is standing by the story, saying that a Microsoft employee showed them the application.
It is possible, of course, that the issue is subject to Microsoft's infamous internal politics. One imagines that at least one part of Microsoft would be unhappy with releasing the software on arch-rival iOS ahead of the rumoured bundling of Office with the upcoming "Windows on ARM" version of Windows 8.

Having released Battlefield 3 on the Apple App Store earlier this month, EA has now pulled the game from sale.
IGN reports that the decision was made after an influx of negative reviews regarding both its controls and its network stability. The game is free to play thanks to sponsorship from Act of Valor, but included only one map and four weapons.
At the time of removal the game had a 2.5 star user rating on the App Store.
"EA Mobile is committed to delivering mobile entertainment experiences that are on par with the content and quality users have come to expect from their favorite EA gaming brands,” a statement from the publisher reads.
“To this end, we have decided to remove Battlefield 3: Aftershock from the App Store and are currently re-evaluating the app in response to the consumer feedback we've received. We thank all the fans who have downloaded the game to date."
An expanded and improved version of the game will be released later this year.

With the coming of Android 3.1 you finally have the option of using the device as a USB host. This may be through a USB OTG (On-the-Go) adaptor, but nonetheless it’s a feature which was sorely missed until now. [Manuel] put together a guide on using Android as a USB host. As you can see, his example hardware is an Arduino board but this is applicable with just about any device.
The tutorial implements a test app for the Android device where a slider will set the brightness of the Arduino’s on-board LED. The Arduino sketch is nothing special, it just reads data received on the UART. This means that it doesn’t care if it’s connected to an Android, PC, OSX, or Linux system, it goes about its business until the RX interrupt updates the data variable.
This will greatly simplify a lot of projects we’ve seen, such as this message scrolling belt buckle. That used extra hardware to make the Arduino the host, a step that is now necessary.

The legal tussle between Apple and Proview over the iPad has swung in Cupertino's direction. According to Ximin News, a Shanghai court has rebuffed Proview's demand for an injunction halting the sale of the Apple tablet due to licensing issues. The Pudong New Area People's Court made the decision yesterday, stating that there wasn't enough evidence to support Proview's claim of a trademark violation. There wasn't enough to substantiate Proview's claims that it still held rights to the trademark in China. Its Taiwan branch registered the trademark in several countries, with the Shenzhen branch registering it in China. Apple then bought worldwide rights from Proview Taiwan, which would have included China. Proview Shenzhen is now saying that they never authorized its Taiwan counterpart to do so, but Apple is says that it has Proview Shenzhen's signatures on the paperwork. It looks like it's going to get easier to grab that iPad in China. An iPhone 4S, on the other hand...

Harris makes the tough tech you'd expect to see census takers (leave it), NFL stadiums and public busestoting around. It's introducing a new 7-inch Android tablet that's so hard-as-nails it would make a Galaxy Tab go home and call its mother. The Harris RF-3590 packs a 1024 x 600 multitouch display, a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM, 2 and 8-megapixel front and rear-facing cameras and comes running Honeycomb. There's plenty of connection options with the usual WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth supplanted by a cellular connection, Ethernet, HDMI, SD and USB holes. It'll come with a 64GB SSD as standard but you can upgrade it to 128GB if you've got the moolah. Designed for soldiers in the battlefield, when stealth isn't necessary you can even activate voice control and bark your orders into the pair of microphones included. There's no word on pricing or availability, presumably because if you want to pick one of these up, you probably need to be called "General," and not just because you're good at Starcraft.

If LG failed to impress so far with the Android 2.3 phones it's shown off in the run up to MWC 2012, perhaps the Optimus 4X HD can turn things around. This 4.7-inch beast will hit Europe in the second quarter and is its first to feature a 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 as its benchmark destroying CPU, a 4.7-inch True HD IPS LCD (1280x720) plus what appears to be a lightly customized version of Ice Cream Sandwich. Perhaps the only logical followup to its Optimus 2X that kicked off all the dual-core madness, it also includes a 2,150mAh battery, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Despite that huge screen, at a depth of 8.9mm it's only slightly thicker than the superwide 4x3 Optimus Vu. Just like the Fujitsu prototype we spent some time with at CES, the Tegra 3 features a 4+1 "Companion Core" design, with a fifth low power unit available to take care of more mundane tasks without draining the battery. This is all pretty close to the leaked "X3" specs we'd heard, however there's no mention of NFC or HSPA+ just yet, only DLNA and MHL. Check out the full press release after the break for a few more specs.

OnLive has already given Microsoft loving iPad owners a hefty, gratis helping of Windows 7, but that doesn't mean they haven't been building a paywall. What's behind the freshly dried brick and mortar? OnLive Desktop Plus, an optional, subscription based upgrade that touts new features for users who are willing to pay a fee. Five dollars a month buys you a cloud-accelerated web browser (that would be Internet Explorer 9, complete with fully functioning Adobe Flash and Acrobat plug-ins) and priority access to the OnLive Desktop service -- freeloading "standard" subscribers can only access the service on an as-available basis. OnLive says that the cloud powered browser's full Windows experience finally gives the iPad full Flash compatibility, giving you the chance to feed your nostalgic need to watch cartoons check their email. We got an early look at the app, read on for a quick hands-on and OnLive's official press release.

It's been barely a month since Google Docs on Android got offline support, but here comes Mountain View with another equally impressive update. Those upgrading today are treated to collaborative editing, much in the vein of their desktop counterparts. That means you can now watch edits happen in real time from your Android tablet or smartphone. In addition, there's a bevy of interface tweaks too, including a new pinch-to-zoom gesture and rich text formatting. Feel good video demoing all awaits after the break.

[Lewis] wanted to control MIDI devices with the huge touch screen that is his Android phone. After he couldn’t find a simple hardware implementation of MIDI out, he turned to an IOIO board to send MIDI notes to just about any imaginable musical hardware. It’s a clean build and fills a gap in the abilities of the Android platform.
Because of the woeful support of MIDI in Android, [Lewis] couldn’t find a good way to push MIDI notes from his phone to other devices. While there are a few high-overhead options like MIDI over wi-fi or a Bluetooth connection, there wasn’t much in the way of a straight-up hardware connection to other MIDI devices. [Lewis] got around this limitation by using an IOIO board and the right software to send MIDI notes though a DIN-5 connector.
Although the project works as intended, [Lewis]‘ build could be made more permanent by building one of these MIDI interfaces and wiring that to the IOIO. All the Android code is up and available, along with a neat demo of [Lewis] controlling the delay time of an effects unit in his guitar rig. You can check that video out after the break.

Midway -- well, Warner Bros. since there's no Midway anymore -- joins the group of publishers releasing iOS compilations of classic games. The 99-cent Midway Arcade app includes emulated versions of Spy Hunter, Rampage, Joust,Root Beer Tapper, Defender, and Arch Rivals, along with "Air Hockey, Arcade Basketball, Pool, and Roll Ball" -- 3D recreations of arcade attractions.
You know more games are available as in-app purchases. Currently, two "Game Packs" are available, one including NARC, Total Carnage, and APB, and another containing, Wizard of Wor and the two Gauntlets. We're looking very critically at these to see which of them are likely to be tolerable with touch controls. We're probably going to find out for ourselves.

Top 100 paid-for apps cost 2.5 times more on Android Market than on Apple App Store.
Researcher Canalys says the top 100 paid-for Android apps would gross at $374.37, averaging at $3.74 per app, while the top 100 paid-for iPhone apps would cost $147, averaging at $1.47 per app.
This was true for all five of the countries examined, which included the UK, the US, Germany, India and Singapore.
Rachel Lashford, MD of mobile and APAC at Canalys, said: "That developers can apparently charge more for their apps on Android and make it into the top paid list is clearly a positive.
"But the reality is that with fewer people willing to purchase apps on Android than on iOS today, there is more of a necessity to do so. Developers and publishers need to balance the iOS volume opportunity with a potentially greater value per download opportunity on Android, where more apps command higher price points.
"Selling more apps at higher prices is the Holy Grail for developers, but achieving big volumes of paid apps on Android is no small challenge. More aggressive price competition around Android apps would help to encourage more consumers to make their first app purchases, drive greater download volumes, and ultimately be good for the vibrancy of the app ecosystem."

Slim white creation with curvaceous rear.
Italian designer Federico Ciccarese was bored of waiting for theofficial iPhone 5, so he created his own.
It's a bit of a throwback to the iPhone 3, but slimmer, with round edges and an oblong-like shape, while the Apple logo on the back lights up when in use, like that of a MacBook laptop.
He made it in the ice white colour which usually follows the standard black option.
Additionally, Ciccarese has also designed his vision of the rumoured iPad Mini, which is thought to measure at around eight-inches.
All utterly pointless, of course.

Orange, T-Mobile, Virgin and Three could launch 4G mobile services by the end of the year if Orange and T-Mobile owner Everything Everywhere is granted regulatory approval to launch a next-generation mobile network.
Everything Everywhere has requested approval to use some of the firm's 1800MHz radio spectrum for 4G services and if granted this will allow the firm's own brands as well as other networks that use the Everything Everywhere network to finally offer 4G in the UK.
The company has a transitional plan to rapidly roll out fancier versions of 3G in the form of HSPA+ 21 and HSPA+ 42, boosting download speeds on the existing network. Meanwhile a further trials in almost-4G LTE, will kick off in April on the 1800MHz band.
Everything Everywhere is to spend Ł1.5 billion on the LTE upgrade. "I am also very proud to announce that, subject to regulatory approval by the spring, Everything Everywhere will be in a position to begin the roll out of 4G before the end of the year," said Everything Everywhere boss Olaf Swantee.
"There is a great opportunity for the UK to have the 21st Century network that it so deserves, putting the nation on a level playing field with other parts of Europe, the USA and Asia," he added.

"Fraunhofer IIS has chosen Mobile World Congress as the place to present the world's first Full-HD Voice mobile phone calls over an LTE network. Verizon Wireless has toyed with VoLTE (Voice over LTE) before, but this particular method enables mobile phone calls to sound as clear as talking to another person in the same room. Full-HD Voice is already established in several VoIP, video telephony and conferencing systems. However, this will mark the first time Fraunhofer's Full-HD Voice codec AAC-ELD has been integrated into a mobile communications system. Currently, the majority of phone calls are limited to the 3.5 kHz range, whereas humans are able to perceive audio signals up to 20 kHz. The Full-HD Voice codec AAC-ELD gives access to the full audible audio spectrum."

AP reports that last week during a question-and-answer session at the company's annual shareholders' meeting CEO Tim Cook said he believes Apple has more money than it needs and his next challenge is to figure out whether Apple should break from the cash-hoarding ways of his predecessor, the late Steve Jobs, and dip into its $98 billion bank account to pay shareholders a dividend this year. "Frankly speaking, it's more than we need to run the company." The question of how to handle Apple's cash stockpile is a touchy one, partly because company co-founder Jobs had steadfastly brushed aside suggestions that the company restore its quarterly dividend which Jobs suspended in 1995 when it was in such deep trouble that it needed to hold on to every cent to keep from going bankrupt. Marketwatch analyst Mark Hulbert writes that a compelling case can be made that a huge cash hoard actually represents grave danger for Apple. That's because too much cash often burns a hole in managers' pockets, and they end up doing a poor job of investing that cash—engaging instead in foolish pursuits like empire building. Hulbert adds that a good strategy for ensuring that Apple remains a hungry, growth-oriented entrepreneurial company might be for it to distribute much of its cash to shareholders

Reports are circulating that Apple has acquired the app search and discovery platform Chomp, founded in 2009, adding fuel to the fire of speculation that the company's expertise will be used to fine tune a forthcoming App Store redesign.
The deal was first uncovered by TechCrunch, although no terms of the deal have yet been confirmed.
Chomp operates a search service for both iOS and Android apps and games, and has a deal in place with Verizon to power all of its marketplace searches. That deal, along with all of Chomp's other business not directly related to the Apple App Store, is likely to end once the acquisition and transition are completed.
The company's entire twenty-plus workforce is expected to be at least offered positions with the new owner, with 9-5 Mac reporting that Chomp CEO and co-founder Ben Keighran has become part of the iTunes marketing team, with CTO Kathy Edwards becoming a senior iTunes engineer.
Whether this indicates a focus on that side of Apple's business for the team and its tech remains to be seen, but the obvious application would be a revamp of the App Store itself.
Acquiring such a team could prove invaluable as Apple continues to combat its biggest problem: that of discoverability. With over half a million apps now available via the storefront, Apple has become something of a victim of its own success.
Since it began clamping down on app promotion services and paid-for drone download businesses Apple has been repositioning itself in a familiarly controlling stance over App Store rankings and the all-important front page places, but most believe that the issue cannot simply be ignored.

Getjar has launched a new payments system for Android devices, Getjar Gold. The virtual currency is supported by advertising, rather than customers buying it with real world dollars.
"The virtual nature of the currency and its linking to the global advertising spend solve two major problems that the traditional billing platforms have struggled with - low conversions due to the complicated user experience and the lack of access to global markets," said GetJar CEO Ilja Laurs.
"Our early results are showing significant increases in both revenue and conversion, and we expect developers will experience an increase of up to 10X for participating."
It shouldn't be a daunting move for the company, which already has Getjar Gold, which rewards gamers with virtual goods. Getjar Gold will take that to the next level, and allow gamers to earn currency that can then be used across the Getjar portfolio for items and to upgrade to premium versions of apps.
Getjar calls itself the largest independent app store, and boasts 350,000 apps which have netted 2 billion downloads. It works with around 395,000 developers.

Warner Bros. has busted out an iOS flavored compilation of Midway's classic arcade games. For 99 cents you can re-live the experience of pumping coin after coin in the cabinets of your childhood. The app comes with emulated versions of Spy Hunter, Rampage, Joust, Root Beer Tapper, Defender, Arch Rivals, Air Hockey, Arcade Basketball, Pool and Roll Ball. Once you've finished reacquiring your square-eyes from all that gaming action, two expansions are available as an in-app purchase. One includes NARC, Total Carnage and APB, whilst the other packs both Gauntlet games and Wizard of War. All the company needs to do now is make sure it works in perfect harmony with the iCade and we may never leave the house again.

While those lucky beta testers managed to get a healthy lump of extra Dropbox storage for their efforts, the mobile app's new auto-upload feature has officially arrived. The update is now available on Android devices and we're promised that the Apple-flavored update will appear very soon. We've been playing with the beta for the last few weeks, and it's pretty simple stuff, maintaining the file size of your mobile shots and delivering them to Dropbox's storage in the sky. You can toggle the auto-upload feature, or assign it for use only when there's an available WiFi connection. For anyone that hasn't got into the free cloud storage race game just yet, you can hit up the Android Market link below.

Waking Mars, the IGF finalist formerly known as Lost Mars, has been approved for human consumption and will be available on Apple's App Store come March 1, according to developer Tiger Style's Twitter account. The action-gardening platformer will set you back a solid $4.99, is both iPhone and iPad compatible, and as we discovered last September, looks "stunning."
The game's name change was a preemptive precaution inspired by Mojang's legal trouble over Scrolls: "We were paying attention to the silliness surrounding 'Scrolls' and 'Elder Scrolls' and we talked to our lawyer and decided that it was best to go with a name we absolutely can own," said Tiger Style's Dave Kalina in a statement on the developer's blog. As that old, interplanetary gardener's saying goes, it's better to plant stuff on Mars than to get planted by Martians. Or, something.

Selected Nokia, HTC and Samsung devices offer best performance.
It has been a long time coming, but Microsoft has finally made use of its $8.5 billion Skype takeover, which closed in Q3 2011, and developed a beta app for Windows Phone.
Skype for WinPho Beta supports all of the usual Skype functions and has been integrated with a "clean and simple" Metro user interface.
Users can make video calls over 3G, 4G and wi-fi connections, and Skype says its "tested and certified devices for best performances" include:
* Nokia Lumia 710
* Nokia Lumia 800
* HTC Titan
* HTC Radar
* Samsung Focus S
* Samsung Focus Flash
The beta version is available from the Windows Phone Marketplace, while the 'gold version' is set for an April launch.

51 per cent of smartphone users say they would be lost without texts.
Although instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp and BBM are hugely popular, mobile messaging firm Acision says 95 per cent of UK consumers actively use SMS messaging, while 93 per cent of smartphone users with access to IM services still send texts.
74 per cent of smartphone owners say they 'need' SMS, while 51 per cent of that number went as far as to say they would be lost without it.
Additionally, Facebook Chat, Skype, Twitter, BBM and WhatsApp are the five most popular IM platforms on the market.
42 per cent of smartphone users claim they prefer SMS because of its reach, another 42 per cent cited reliability, 38 per cent said price, while 37 per cent said speed of delivery, according to the report.
In comparison, just four per cent of smartphone users said IM is more reliable than text messaging.

Nokia unveiled a camera with an astonishingly high resolution camera sensor at MCW 2012 with the Nokia PureView 808 boasting a 41-megapixel camera.
Quite why you'd want to take an insanely high resolution photo on a phone is another matter but that hasn't deterred the Finnish phonemaker. The PureView 808 is apparently the product of some years of development which explains why the device is still running the aging Symbian OS rather than Windows Phone.
Nokia had to come up with a new fancy image compression scheme to get the 41-megapixel images down to a mere 10MB in size. Not really the sort of images one might upload to Facebook. That said the point seems to be to take wide angle images of such quality it's possible to massively zoom in to crop out a section of the image later.
This is probably like the phone equivalent of those implausible crime shows where a savvy chin-scratching investigator asks that their resident boffin zoom up on some detail and 'enhance', revealing the identity of the murderer in the reflection of a name badge from several kilometres away.
To be fair, Nokia is rather sensibly using the massive pixels of the 1/1.2-inch oversized sensor to create better quality standard resolution shots, including the ability to deliver superior low light performance. Even so, the PureView 808 is fitted with both a LED 'flash' for video recording and a Xenon flash for still photos.
Pricing is said to be under the Ł300 mark ex contract when the device appears in the second quarter. It doesn't seem much of a stretch to suggest that Nokia will port the fancy Symbian camera app to Windows Phone and ship the overachieving image sensor in a Microsoft based phone later in the year.

HTC has unveiled a batch of new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona including the flagship HTC One X armed with Nvidia's Tegra 3 chipset.
The new handsets are the first since the mobile giant's stated shift in strategy to focus on fewer 'hero' products rather than the confusing array of phones the company has produced over the last couple of years.
The HTC One X follows the recent trend of massive 4.7-inch phones, opting for the same resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels but using Sony's SLCD rather than Samsung's OLED.
Armed with the quad-core plus 'companion core' Tegra 3 and 8 megapixel camera, the HTC One X has virtually identical specifications with the recently announced LG Optimus 4X HD. Spec watchers will, however, take note that HTC is going with a smaller 1,800mAH battery compared to the LG's heftier 2,150mAH cell.
The mid-range HTC One S opts for more sane but still large 4.3-inch screen, this time opting for AMOLED, and the last generation dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 1.5GHz processor.
The lowest end of HTC's One range is the 3.7-inch HTC One V with a 1GHz processor and 5 megapixel camera. Despite the lower spec, the One V will still ship with the latest Android 4.0.
The HTC One X will cost a shade under Ł600 bought outright, the One S about Ł100 less and the no pricing was announced for the One V yet. Like all HTC phones, the new Android 4.0 devices ship with an updated HTC Sense OS customisation. HTC have also saved one last party trick for the One X and S with a planned 'Media Link' wireless HDMI dongle that will teleport the screen onto any HDMI-equipped display. Nifty.

Chinese budget Android phonemaker ZTE is the latest to launch a high-end smartphone based on Nvidia's Tegra 3 chipset but the ZTE Era opts for a smaller 4.3-inch display.
While the rest of the market has stampeded towards massive 4.7-inch and up phones with 1280 x 720 pixels, ZTE's new Era opts for 4.3-inchs with 970 x 640 pixels. The quad-core Tegra 3 mated with Android 4.0 and an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video, as is in vogue with the latest crop of Android announcements at MWC 2012.
ZTE has a little more pedigree than fellow China mainland rival Huawei in higher end Android phones, typically making phones rebranded for carriers. However both manufacturers have since declared for the high-end with announcements of large quad core Android 4.0 phones destined for the world market.
The ZTE Era, being slightly smaller, slightly lower resolution and with a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 versus the 1.5GHz of top-shelf rivals, will very likely come with some aggressive pricing to boot. Nevertheless it still manages a positively svelte 7.8mm-thick profile.
It looks like ZTE is also dipping their toes into software development with an Android 4.0 customised front-end called Miflavor although this wasn't demonstrated at the show. Demo models were running Gingerbread.
There's no clue on pricing but the device is scheduled to appear somewhat later than other rivals, some time during the third quarter.

Apple looks set to give a thorough overhaul to the App Store to improve discoverability following the acquisition of Chomp.
Chomp's search engine, available as a standalone app on iOS and Android, enables users to search not just by title - which, obviously, requires that users know what they're looking for - but by type.
The deal makes sense for Apple as the App Store closes in on its 25 billionth download. With over half a billion apps on the store already, and hundreds more being added every day, discovery is already hamstrung by the App Store's rudimentary search function, a situation that will only worsen over time.
TechCrunch reports that Apple will also use the technology to power a new recommendations system. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Apple has moved swiftly to get the Chomp team on its books: 9 to 5 Mac reports that CEO Ben Keighran has joined the iTunes marketing team, with CTO Cathy Edwards now a senior iTunes engineer.

If Apple's usual release schedule is to be believed (as it usually is), we're just about due for another iPad. Naturally, the rumor mill has amped up accordingly -- in fact, given the amount of news we've seen hit the wire regarding the phantom product, the only thing that would genuinely surprise us would be if Cupertino just opted to pull out of the tablet space altogether. Given the sort of sales figures the company has been seeing as of late, its seems a pretty safe bet that the company is confident that the old slate's still got a little bit of steam left in her.
Yep, the one thing we feel pretty confident in saying at the moment is that Apple most likely has a new iPad in the works and it's most likely coming fairly soon. It also seems like a pretty safe bet that the company goes with the iPad 3 name -- but hey, we've been burned there before. If the rumors flooding in from the likes of Digitimes and The Wall Street Journal are to be believed, the slate will bring with it faster internals, a higher res screen, a tapered back and a general smattering of Apple's customary pixie dust. So, what can we expect from the third iteration of the company's crazy popular slate? Not evenSamsung knows for sure, but we're breaking down the fire hose of rumors after the break.

Sony and RealVNC have announced a partnership that aims to liberate your smartphone's applications and content, bringing the wares to your car's dashboard. Once a VNC-enabled vehicle and Android handset are paired, users can access and manipulate the device's applications, music library and stream web content directly to the car's infotainment system. In order to preserve public safety, and meet "regulatory requirements," the system can detect vehicle velocity and will revoke the proverbial keys to your mobile kingdom while you're in motion. The RealVNC code will be bundled with "all new 2012 Xperia handsets" and the accompanying VNC Automotive software has -- according to the press release, anyway -- "been widely adopted by the automotive industry." What's more, the VNC goodies will allow Sony support specialists to troubleshoot your Xperia handset remotely, should you request such assistance. Mosey on past the break for a look at the full announcement.

If you hadn't noticed, it's Mobile World Congress this week and Google's showing off its enormous booth packed to the gills with smiling green Androids. Andy Rubin insouciantly added that the Android Marketplace has reached its latest milestone: there are now 450,000 apps available for the platform. Other pertinent stats are that over a billion apps are downloaded every month and that 850,000 Android devices are activated each day -- meaning that there's more than 300 million of them worldwide. Of course, that's not the real story here at MWC, it's that the company have brought along a bedazzling booth for guests to glue as many false jewels to their Galaxy Nexus back-plate as their self-respect can handle.

Apple expected to unveil whizzy LTE tablet.
The iPad 3 rumours are heating up amid iPad 2 price cuts and miscellaneous reports, the latest of which claims Apple has dished out invites for the reveal of the next generation tablet.
Following CNBC's tweet, which declared Apple was unleashing a quad-core powered 4G iPad 3 in New York next week, we can confirm that a device will be revealed on March 7th in San Francisco.
It seems MWC isn't of consequence to Apple, simply choosing to send out a press release during the hectic mobile week to plug its own event instead.
The Apple showcase will be held next Wednesday at 10AM PST at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Avaiable to tablet makers now.
The products has been made by Yandex's recently acquired SPB, which made its name for its 3D interface, which it sold direct to the public and made for third party OEMs.
But that was a simulated 3D that let the user rotate a cube-type menu through three dimensions.
Yandex Shell 3D Tablet Edition creates 'real' 3D, without glasses, using auto-stereoscopic technology.
The tablet UI home screen features an carousel design which allows users to see panels of all of their apps and widgets in three dimensions, as they swipe from panel to panel.
Each panel is customisable, giving users an opportunity to create the right combination of apps, widgets and folders.

Reckons it's the only social gaming service to support all major native OSs.
The PlayPhone Social Gaming Network, like its well-known competitors Gree, DeNA, Papaya et al, offers a platform through which games can enjoy community features like virtual goods, synchronous multiplayer gaming and deep social integration.
However, the network is more of a destination in itself than a platform that operates via third party games. It has 35m registered users.
The firm has just announced that it's adding WinPho to Android, iOS, HTML5, Adobe AIR and Unity – and says it's the first to do so.
The PlayPhone SGN SDK is free and is available now to developers.
“Microsoft and its partners have put extensive resources toward the rapid adoption of the Windows Phone 7 platform worldwide” said Anders Evju, SVP and GM, PlayPhone.

Apple announced an invitation only event on the 7th of March in San Francisco where the iPhone maker is widely expected to announce the iPad 3.
The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco is the same location used to announce the previous two iterations of the iPad and the press invitation featured a partial image of an iPad.
"We have something you really have to see. And touch," said the invitation.
The key advances of the third generation iPad are expected to include a faster processor, much sharper resolution display and the inclusion of the 4G mobile phone technology LTE.
Earlier in the week arch rival Google's head of Android, Andy Rubin, revealed that the internet giant would "double down" efforts to compete with Apple's tablet. While the Google OS has been something of a star-of-show at the Mobile World Conference in the smartphone space, the company seems hungrier than ever to get a slide of Apple's tablet pie.

More than 300 million Android devices have been sold worldwide, Google has confirmed.
The news comes from a post on the Google Mobile blog to coincide with the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which began yesterday. Google also claims that 850,000 Android devices are activated every single day, representing growth year on year of over 250 per cent.
At last year's MWC, Google said there were 150,000 apps on theAndroid Market; a year later that has tripled to more than 450,000, and the marketplace now hosts a billion app downloads every month.
Naturally, Google's mobile OS has a significant presence at MWC, with 100 devices on show at the Android stand. The company is showing off Android Beam, which enables sharing of web pages, videos, directions and apps by touching two Android phones back to back.

Sony's odd, dual-screened, folding Tablet P is finally getting a "4G" version here the US, courtesy of AT&T. In this case, those 4G speeds are being "delivered" by an HSPA+ radio, a fact that carrier managed to bury in the PR. The Honeycomb device will be bringing its unique set of 5.5-inch screens to Ma Bell starting March 4th for the rather steep price of $400 with a two year contract. If you don't want to sign your soul over you can pick one up unsubsidized for $550, which is still quite a bit less than the cost of importing one of its Ł500 UK siblings. Check out the complete announcement after the break.

APK Downloader is a Chrome extension that does exactly what its name advertises -- download APKs from the Android Market site. Getting the tool up and running takes quite a bit more work than your average browser add-on, requiring you to edit the Chrome shortcut to disable SSL error warnings, but it's hardly rocket science. This should make sideloading apps much easier and give you a chance to try software yourself, even if a developer seems to think its app wont work with your device. There is, of course, room for abuse and it does violate the Market's ToS -- so try it at your own risk. If you're unfazed, hit up the source link for complete instructions.

If Google can get its strategy correct.
Talking at the MWC, Google chief Eric Schmidt revealed that despite the firm's desirable position, around five billion people around the world still haven't completed a Google search.
Additionally, he said that Android phones will reach feature phone prices next year as part of the "universal smartphone revolution".
Schmidt, claims: "A mobile experience at least at the level of today will be available to almost everybody, at a fraction of the price. In 12 years, handsets are going to be 20 times faster, which means phones that cost $400 now will be available for $20. If Google gets this right, there will be an Android in every pocket. At our current growth rate, this is possible.”
He also went on to say that future plans will bring its Chrome browser and the Android OS closer together.
This week's MWC coverage is kindly sponsored by Neomobile, the leader in mobile commerce services. Neomobile is active in 70 geographies from 12 offices in Europe, LatAm and India. It offers a variety of mobile payment services via its Onebip mobile payment solution, featuring frictionless one-click mobile flow.

UK classifieds website rolls onto iOS.
Gumtree is an outlet to give almost anything exposure, with cars, jobs, and properties among the things promoted on the website by businesses and consumers alike.
The firm claims to have over one million ads live at any one time and decided the next step to further its business was via mobile, iOS in particular.
Users will be able to search for items, contact sellers and create favourites via the app, which is free for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Additionally, the app has received more than 300,000 downloads in the first two weeks since its launch.
Hamish Stone, Gumtree.com, said: "With so many of us living our lives on-the-go, the Gumtree.com app allows iPhone users to view, contact, and buy at the click of a button - no matter where they are.

And over 1bn downloads from the Android Market each month.
Google's Android OS is seemingly going from strength to strength, securing 550,000 activations per day in summer 2011, which was up to 700,000 at the end of the year.
Now, Google's mobile SVP Andy Rubin says Android is receiving over 850,000 mobile activations each day.
It's an enormous leap in the space of two months, showing the speedy adoption rate of the operating system, given that it took half a year to achieve the same results in 2011.
Additionally, Rubin went on to reveal the Android Market has 450,000 apps, which up from 150,000 this time last year. The app store is also receiving more than one billion monthly downloads.
Last month, we reported that Google's mobile ad revenues are set to hit $4 billion this year, though it looks like that figure will be significantly beaten if Android can keep up its current pace.

Share prices rise to new high after tech giant teases iPad 3 announcement
Apple’s valuation has risen to half a trillion dollars, making it the highest valued business in the world.
Share prices surged to $535.41 yesterday after the tech giant teased a potential iPad 3 reveal at a press conference set for next week on March 7th .
Data from Bloomberg shows that Apple currently has a market capitalisation of $499.2 billion.
Just two weeks ago shares in the firm had broken the $500 mark, with its valuation then calculated at $469 billion.
This came a month after Apple reported revenues of $45 billion for the 14 weeks ending December 31st, more than four times Google’s earnings for the same quarter.
