Independent verification of seemingly dubious claims makes the world go 'round, which is why we're a little thankful the iPhoneSIMfree crew has deigned CNN worthy of having the second shot at verifying their iPhone SIM unlock software. We know it won't quiet all the conspiracy theorists out there, but their news wire reads as follows:
Los Angeles software consultant Brett Schulte, who is not affiliated with the developers, demonstrated the software for CNN Friday evening. An iPhone that had the new software appeared to work on the T-Mobile system just seconds after Schulte replaced the AT&T SIM card with a T-Mobile SIM card.
We followed up with Brett, and he confirmed working with the iPhoneSIMfree guys on getting his iPhone unlocked -- we also really wanted to ask about getting in touch with Ted Turner for a summer internship, but we got the vibe that it'd be a no-go. Now, if only iPhoneSIMfree would release that product of theirs to the public -- perhaps that might land along side the CNN story they're gunning for?

Dodgin' Diamond II is a Deluxe Galaga style shot'em up arcade game for one or two players. It's an 'old school' arcade game with top-down scroll action, energy based gameplay and different weapons with several levels of power. The UIQ 3 version has been ported by AnotherGuest from a PC/Linux game written by Juan J. Martinez.

kaisersoze has posted some great news and screenshots of his port of MAME to the Iphone:
CURRENT STATUS: Can definitely be made playable by choosing a suitably old version of MAME. Tested with version 0.29 since the code was simple enough back then to slap together something quickly to test performance. I am going to arbitrarily target whatever version runs the Galaga ROM I have on my arcade machine. I suppose I should start thinking about how I want to do the configurable control system. In addition to the straightforward "this area of the screen is this button/joystick/trackball/dial" controls, I'd like to support gesture based inputs as well. Imagine playing Tempest by making an actual circular motion on the touch-screen, or tapping anywhere to fire, or gesturing left-right up-down to move the joystick. You could play Pacman without any screen real estate wasted by displaying controls. I should be able to actually put some time into this over the weekend while I'm on vacation.

kaisersoze has posted some more news of his port of MAME to the Iphone:
OK looks like I can work around that by replacing that library with the actual one on the iPhone. Alright, back to working on the actual project!
Games feel faster after recompiling with new toolchain. Currently working on porting MAME 0.62.
Of course, now the compiler is crashing when trying to compile the Z80 CPU, which is only used in obscure games like Pacman and Galaga.

Nervegas has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:

NES.app uses the popular InfoNES emulation core to mimic the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing you to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES console. ROM dumps are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM dump of any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
NES.app started as a fork based on the same original code as iPhoneNES, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features such as sound, game genie, saved games, and full screen support.
RC3 [nervegas] Fixed "Can Delete ROMs" preference
Added Auto-Frameskip support / preference
Use of AudioQueue to stream audio THROUGH mediaserverd
Replaced old sound channels button with reset button
Added hooks to system volume

Sensing a small gap in existing September 5th iPod rumors, vnunet.com is joining the fray and citing an "industry insider" with word on a digital radio iPod. Apparently the device will stream iTunes songs wirelessly, with a "Buy Now" option if the mood strikes. While internet radio has been a feature of iTunes since time began, it's never really been a big thrust for Apple, and to say that we're skeptical about this "report" is a major understatement. We're also not sure Apple is ready to leave its precious digital hub and finally allow consumers to make purchasing decisions on the go, but we're certainly all for it. Let's file this one under "baseless" until tomorrow when all shall be known

ThinkSecret is tooting its own horn with a supposed confirmation they've obtained of an iPhone-sized (3.5-inch), hard drive-based, touchscreen iPod -- ThinkSecret started talking up a touchscreen iPod 20 months ago, and apparently all that blind rumoring is finally paying off. This contradicts reports of there being flash memory in the device, and is the first time we've heard anyone sound so confident about the 3.5-inch screen size -- though it seems likely that Apple will want to use the same screen as the iPhone for bulk ordering and familiar components -- but otherwise there aren't many surprises. ThinkSecret expects up to 120GB of storage on the 1.8-inch HDD, and sees WiFi as a definite possibility, but doesn't think the reports about internet radio are too on-target. And of course, the iPod nano is supposed to go QVGA, with video playback and up to 12GB or 16GB of storage. We'd make our usual assurances of all being found out tomorrow, but in reality we're just one day away from the next round of rumors beginning, so it's a small comfort.

Hinkka has ported Quake I engine to the S60 3rd Edition platform. The port is fully functional and works very fast, the only missing thing is network play. The software works only on S60 3rd Edition FP1 (Feature Pack 1) phones (e.g. the N95, E90, 6110, etc.) equipped with ARMv6 processors. The port is Open Source and uses Symbian's P.I.P.S libraries. I must say that Quake looks really impressive on E90 Communicator's huge internal screen.

The eBook viewer for the iPhone has been updated with a new release, changes are:
Global persistence works! Books.app remembers where you left off in every darn file you read.
Added "unread" indicators for easily telling where you've left off. (Only applies to files, not folders.)
Delete books from the file browser! Swipe your finger across the book (or directory thereof) and watch the magic.
Cover art available! Put a "cover.jpg" or "cover.png" file in the root level of your book's directory, and it will display in the file browser. Get your books from http://manybooks.net and choose iPhone Books.app format, and cover art comes along for free!
Officially released improved copybookdir.sh, provided by Aaron Davies. Thanks, Aaron!
Some HTML files with width tags may display better. This is a horrible kludge--don't expect miracles.

With the new heat the iPhone will be getting from the iPod Touch, Apple decided to lower the barrier of entry to a much more palatable $399, and that's for the 8GB model, which just yesterday was rocking at $599 pricepoint. It also looks like Apple is doing away with the 4GB version, which was seriously lagging behind its big brother in sales, but there's no official word yet.

Well, what do you know. Turns out the iPod touch is a reality after all. While we initially assumed that Mr. Jobs wouldn't be so kind as to bless us all with two new full-fledged iPods in a single day, we're elated that he had other ideas. The new flagship iPod has "the same size screen as the iPhone, but it's even thinner" (eight-millimeters, for those taking notes), and it also touts the "same multi-touch interface" found on the firm's handset. Additionally, it boasts a 3.5-inch widescreen display, the ability to "flick through your photos," and you even get the "slide to unlock" feature, too. And yes, this thing actually has WiFi. Of note, the built-in wireless antenna isn't exactly attractive, but if it means that we can surf the web (YouTube included) and buy tunes on our iPod, we suppose it may be an acceptable flaw. As for battery life, the touch is said to last 22-hours when playing back audio and 5-hours when watching video, but only time will tell how draining web surfing will be. The iPod touch will be arriving in 8GB and 16GB flavors and will be priced at $299 and $399, respectively, when they ship "worldwide in a few weeks."

Apple today announced the latest in its kind-of-sort-of successful iPod line, the sixth generation iPod "classic." Like the brand new iPod nano, the flagship iPod is also sporting an all-new interface, headlined by Cover Flow. The iPod comes in 80GB and 160GB capacities, with 30 hours of battery for audio playback, 6 hours of video on the 80GB version, and 40 hours / 7 hours for the 160GB unit. In addition to the new interface, the iPod classic is getting a new all-metal shell, and is selling at $249 for the 80 gigger, $349 for 160. You can order one today, and they should be hitting stores by the weekend.

El-Jobso just dropped news that the whole iPod lineup is getting a refresh or replace -- including the nano. Apparently those "spy photos" weren't too far off, as the new nanos look almost identical to the stout, squat player we've come to know and love. The new units will include 2-inch, QVGA, 320 x 240 screens that are 65-percent brighter than previous models and have the highest pixel density the company has ever shipped (204 pixels per inch). In addition to the new screens, the extra-wide player will sport an "enhanced" UI (which looks a lot like the video we saw recently) and its own version of Cover Flow. The nano will come bundled with three games, including a circular-Arkanoid rip-off called Vortex, and apparently you'll be able to purchase more from the iTunes store. The player's battery life has also been extended, with Apple touting 24 hours of playback for audio, and 5 hours for video. The 4GB model will be selling for $149, though it's only available in silver, while the rainbow-colored 8GB will leave you $199 lighter in the wallet. Both models will be in stores "by this weekend."

You may be asking yourself where is Mail, Weather, Google Maps or Stocks in the new iPod touch. The answer: they are coming, but probably not from Apple. The iPod runs Mac OS X like the iPhone does and we have got unofficial word from inside Apple that it runs exactly the same applications. The exact quote: "they use the same damn binaries."

One of the few hundred thousand that dropped 600 bones for an 8GB iPhone instead of the moderately more palatable $399? It's alright, Nokia still hearts you, and they want to prove it. Espoo wasted no time after yesterday's announcement in taking out Google ads encouraging disheartened, empty-walleted iPhone owners to check out its new MOSH service -- a collaborative mobile media site run by the phone giant -- to "salvage" their devices. With all due respect, Nokia, no amount of free content is going to put $200 back into our pockets, but we appreciate the thought nonetheless.

El Jobso is "confident" Apple's made the right decision to lower the price of the iPhone yesterday -- and really, we can't fault them for knocking some cash off the top to attract new buyers, why is cheaper gear a bad thing all of a sudden? But even given the outcry, we definitely didn't see this one coming. In another open letter to his people, Jobs states that he's giving all iPhone owners a $100 Apple gift certificate (details to follow in the next week -- it goes without saying this will only apply to people who bought before the price drop). Well, that's mighty kind of you Steve. And definitely unprecedented in the consumer electronics industry that a company would give cash back to early adopters -- those most accustomed to buying a gadget first, asking questions later, and bottling their complaints when said gadget later drops dramatically in price.

This project will bring Microsoft Exchange email access to the iPhone without the use of IMAP (which many companies will not enable on their servers) or 3rd party websites. It uses a simple Python script that logs into Outlook Web Access and screen-scrapes the content. The screen-scraped emails are then served up to the iPhone email client via a local 'fake' POP3 server.

Now that all the RDF has worn off, a few of the hard facts about Apple's latest are coming to light, and one of the nasties has to do with video output. Apparently the new iPod classic and iPod nano don't get along too well with currently video docks and cables on the market -- that is to say, pretty much not at all. A select few products with the 'spensive Apple authentication chips built-in do allow you to turn on TV out, like Apple's Universal Dock, iPod Hi-Fi (which doesn't have video output anyways) and the $600 Zeppelin from Bowers and Wilkins, but if you've sprung for products such as the Memorex iFlip and Sonic Impact Video-55 in the past, you're out of luck for the time being. It seems logical to us that Apple has the ability to unlock this function for existing docks if it so chooses, but for now you can always drop a fifty on those new component cables from Apple -- and pray for a repeat in the "contrite open letter" department.

Well, this is a handy (and well-timed) find! User Cleverboy over at Macrumors has discovered a simple trick to get your own music onto your iPhone using the just-released iTunes 7.4, and it'll cost you precisely nothing. To get this to work, we hear you only need to rename an AAC track to .M4R, then double click it and iTunes will automagically load it into iTunes for you. Next time you plug in your iPhone to sync up, just check off the song in the Ringtones tab and voila, instant tone gratification. Thanks, Apple -- free ringtones for the songs we already own or ripped from our own CDs, this is how it should have been from the get-go. On a happy note, Macrumor's forum users are reporting the magic works via both Apple and Windows flavors of iTunes, but feel free let us know how you all get on.

So last night iTunes 7.4.1 came out which, among other things, blocked off the custom ringtone renaming method, which allowed users to add their own ringtones to their iPhone without buying them on iTunes. Well, as posters in our own comments have already discovered, it's back, and here's how to do it:
First, follow the steps of the original method
Create your ringtone, save it as an AAC file.
Rename the m4a extension to m4r.
Double-click to play in iTunes.
Now, if you're upgraded to 7.4.1
Go back and re-rename that m4r file back to m4a. That's it.
Plug in your iPhone and that ringtone will be added to your syncable ringtones list -- and it won't pop up the error from before.
Play your ringtones constantly for the next 10 hours until 7.4.2 comes out.

Books.app is a simple eBook reader for the iPhone. It reads HTML and text files stored in your Media/EBooks folder, and is smart enough to enter subdirectories, if, for instance, you've broken a book down by chapters.
Changes:
If a file doesn't display correctly, try a new text encoding. Text encoding is now user-overrideable in the Preferences pane.
Mark all your files as new!
Mark the current directory as new! If you're re-reading a book, mark all its chapters as new.
Many bug fixes.

After numerous delays and endless cries of "hoax!", it looks like the iPhoneSIMfree iPhone unlocking software is finally available for purchase from four online retailers around the world. Wireless Imports in the US, iPhoneWorldwideUnlock in Australia, 1digitalphone in Germany, and iPhone4arab in Saudi Arabia (currently down) have all purchased bulk licenses from the iPhoneSIMfree team and are selling individual unlocks for around $100 (Update: that price is just from the US etailer, it seems; looks like the Aussies are letting it go for under 50 bucks American.

1.1.2 [nergevas] Fixed memory reading issues breaking Toki, maybe others

Sketches 0.1 alpha already allows you to draw on the screen, select a picture from the photo album or shoot a photo to draw on top of it. It will save your work automatically, unless you clear it using the button or shaking your iPhone like an etch-a-sketch. You can draw full-screen: the UI will hide when you tap on the screen.
Future releases will include many improvements, such as the ability to select pencils and colors, a library of stationary to use for your background, geometric shapes, complex shapes (stamps), saving your work to the photo library (so that you can synchronize back to your computer), and many other ideas we will be thrilled to develop.

Now that iPhoneSIMfree is in the wild, the iPhone Dev Team folks that started all this hackery have been looking to see how the iPhoneSIMfree hack works, and seem to have landed upon the solution. Apparently the thrust of what the iPhoneSIMfree folks figured out was that it's possible to write / flash to the baseband of the iPhone -- the chip that controls the main voice and system functions of the phone. Apparently Geohot resorted to his hardware hack because it was believed this couldn't be done. Now that the Dev Team people have observed this flashing in action, they've launched into writing their very own unlocker using the same method, which will naturally be released free of charge as soon as it's ready. All signs point to the free, standalone unlocker being ready soon. On a slightly shadier note, there seems to be a parallel effort to emulate the iPhoneSIMfree server that does the unlocking magic for those currently willing to pay for the privilege. If it's to be believed, the fake server (and free network unlocking) should be ready to go in a matter of hours.

It's really an ethical dilemma for the ages. On one hand, you love your shiny new Apple toy so much, you just have to hack in new functionality, on the other hand you can't bear to think that the mighty Steve Jobs thinks ill of you and your hacker ways. Well now you can finally put those fears to rest, because Apple's Greg Joswiak has officially confirmed a "neutral" stance on the iPhone hacking issue. That is to say, Apple doesn't plan to maliciously attempt to break native, third-party applications in forthcoming firmware updates, but at the same time Apple won't go out of its way to ensure those updates don't break third-party applications accidentally, and certainly isn't offering support to the hackers of any kind. We'd say it's a step above "frenemy," but not quite to the point where Steve'll be demoing Jailbreak at his next keynote.

Another great freeware port to UIQ3 from AnotherGuest: Amoebax is a cute and addictive Tetris-like action-puzzle game. Due an awful mutation, some amoeba's species have started to multiply until they take the world if you can't stop them. Fortunately the mutation made then too unstable and lining up four or more will make them disappear.

Shocking, we know. As if the price drops on the PlayStation 3 weren't evidence enough that we all like our gizmos a bit cheaper, a new report from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster claims that iPhone sales skyrocketed shortly after the (hotly contested) price drops. According to his math, Apple needed to sell some 136,000 iPhones between September 5th (the day of the cuts) and September 9th (the day Apple claimed to have sold one million of its mobiles), which meant that 27,000 iPhones per day were getting unboxed in the five-day period. Comparatively, Munster approximated that Cupertino was unloading around 9,000 iPhones per day prior to the price cuts. 'Course, even Gene doubts that the recent sales surge will be able to hold steady, but we'd say the slashings have already had their desired effect.

Lights Off is a fun and highly addictive puzzle game made even better with iPhone's touch screen, created by Lucas Newman and Adam Betts.
The objective is to switch all of the lights out. Tapping a light toggles it, along with the four adjacent lights. Once you switch all of the lights out, you'll advance to the next level!
Changes:
All puzzles should now be solvable.
The state of the buttons is now saved when Lights Off is quit.
Button presses can now be cancelled by dragging your finger off the button before letting go.

Tap Tap Revolution is an iPhone game in the style of Dance Dance Revolution, but you wouldn't want to stamp on your iPhone so instead you must tap the screen
Two days' work and my game is finally releasable. Download songs from my online collection (contact me to get your own music on there) and tap to the beat when the lights hit the bottom line.
TTR has an online update feature (under "New Tracks") where new tracks will be added (by indie artists). You can download and play them over your Wi-fi connection (downloading not recommended over EDGE but it will work).

A new homebrew game has been out for a week but we missed the releases and has since been updated a few times. 5dice is an iPhone version of the classic dice game Yahtzee.
Think Yahtzee! Fun, and easy to play. Great game for killing a time since it will hold your place. Play whenever you wnat. The iPhone is a great platform for a native version of this game. Enjoy! Have Fun!
The main playable game is more or less complete. Still tweaking a few things here and there, but it is a great way to enjoy a few moments on your iPhone.
What's New
.2.8b Modified some scoring behavior for the first yahtzee. Also tweaked some new game and game over behaviors.
.2.6b Fixed Yahtzee bonus persistence problem.
.2.5b Added score card animation. Fixed small bug with the turn counter. In some cases you couldn't play your last turn. :-(
.2b Game persistence. Suspend the game, and return where you left off. Remember folks, this is beta software. Seems to be working well in my testing. Nice to be able to return to your regularly scheduled fun right where you were. New icon. I thought this looked a little cleaner. At least on my SpringBoard. Some other minor tweaks.
Visit the homepage at http://code.google.com/p/5dice/ for more information and the downloads.

If you are sure to have the v1.02 iPhone Firmware on your baby, then you can UNLOCK it easily without hardware modification. Just follow the instruction on the linked page. Of course everything at your own personal risk.
The software itself is LEGAL and considering that there are no commercial iPhone games yet, it will just enable you to try out homebrew stuff. We believe there is no economical damage at this time of posting.

Books.app is a simple eBook reader for the iPhone. It reads HTML and text files stored in your Media/EBooks folder, and is smart enough to enter subdirectories, if, for instance, you've broken a book down by chapters.
Changes:
Bug fixes! Books.app is now completely bug-free, and all features requested by users have been implemented. In addition, world peace has been achieved, Apple has announced that it's open-sourcing the iPhone, and my children got A's on their last report cards. Well, okay, that last one was an exaggeration.

Wake the kids, phone the neighbors, the graphical version (we think it has a GUI, it's unclear at the moment) of the iPhone unlocking software is now out, official, automatic (or as much as it can be) and free. Developed by the iPhoneDev team, the new software makes opening up your iPhone to any GSM carrier simple as pie. According to the Dev Team, "This new version needs only be copied over to the phone and executed, it's full automatic. No more needs for fls or extract bin files out of the nordump. It should also cut the time down to max. 3-5 minutes."
We'll bring you more just as soon as we get hands-on with the new wares (eh hem, all our iPhones seem to be unlocked at the moment) and as long as Apple doesn't drop the hammer with a new iPhone firmware release. We know it's coming, and chances are it will wreak havoc with the unlock.

With the launch of the iPod touch and the iTunes WiFi Music Store this week, it's pretty obvious that the iPhone is due for an update soon -- Apple can't leave all those iPhone users wondering what song is playing in Starbucks, after all -- but what's not certain is how much of an update we're going to see. The eagle-eyed posters at HowardForums might have spotted a clue, though -- the iPhone early-adopter $100 credit signup page clearly shows an iPhone running firmware v1.1.1, with a couple interesting additions: a setting for "Home Button," and another marked "International." The Home Button setting will likely bring the iPod touch's nifty double-tap music controller to the iPhone, but we have no idea what the International menu is for -- maybe for reducing some of those crazy roaming bills? Either way, we should know soon.

Apple has already seen fit to give the new iPod Classics a firmware update, which according to the company does nothing but fix bugs. Members of iLounge's forum know otherwise, with members reporting that it improves previously sluggish menu and CoverFlow performance: one of the few gripes with the updated iPod. Notice anything else? Let loose in the comments.

No rest for the weary on the Apple LCD front -- hot the heels of reports that the 20-inch iMac's screen is less than impressive, word on the street (and Apple's support forums) is the iPod touch is having trouble displaying blacks correctly. Posters have described is everything from a "negative black effect" to "shimmering" to simply "washed-out." We're hearing that simply bringing a defective unit back to an Apple Store will result in an immediate swap, but it certainly looks like Steve was glossing over a detail or two when he said the touch had the "same screen" as the iPhone, eh?

Apple might be neutral towards third-party iPhone software development, but it's apparently downright hostile when it comes to DIY ringtones -- just 10 days after releasing iTunes 7.4.1, which killed off an easy way of getting your own ringtones on the iPhone, the company has dropped iTunes 7.4.2, which obsoletes the latest ways of getting your own sounds on the phone, including popular apps MakeiPhoneRingtones and iToner. DIY ringtones still make it into iTunes' ringtones folder, but aren't copied over to the iPhone -- a problem we're certain hackers will get around sooner rather than later. C'mon Apple, we know you're smarter than to play these cat-and-mouse games.

VNsea is a graphical VNC client for the iPhone and presumably the iPod touch, based on Chicken of the VNC for Mac OS X.
Please note that server passwords are currently stored in plaintext in the preferences file and shown unprotected on screen. This will be fixed as soon as the client is mostly functional. Right now, functionality takes precedence over local security.
Changes:
Vnsea now has very basic mouse control. Scrolling is now done with two fingers, while a single finger controls the mouse.
Support for all encoding formats supported by CotVNC, including JPEG.
You can control the desired pixel depth from the server settings to cut down on bandwidth.
Better error reporting (i.e. no crash) if a connection cannot be made.
Shimmer is included so future updates can be performed automatically.

Besides lying to police about his involvement as a passenger, the 27-year old German playboy also fled to Ireland before sneaking back into US the through the Mexican border in search of some tasty bud and cool waves. The sentence? 30 days, which roughly translates to a punishment of tickling by virgins until the onset of bellyache by the time the appeals process is through.

NES.app is a Nintendo emulator for Apple's iPhone. NES.app uses a modified version of the popular InfoNES emulation core to mimic the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing you to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES console. ROM dumps are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM dump of any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
NES.app started as a fork of iPhoneNES v0.01, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features including full sound, game genie codes, saved games, battery-saved ram support, and full screen support.
Changes since v1.2.0:
*Fixed scanline processing
*Should notice improvement in speed and sound sync

The rumors are true: iPhone exclusively on T-Mobile Germany starting November 9th just like in the UK. The 8GB model will go for €399 [or £279] (including V.A.T and 2-year T-Mobile tariff) and will be sold through Telekom Shops of Deutsche Telekom and the T-Mobile web shop. Yes, you still get access to the WiFi iTunes Store, Visual Voicemail, and, for better or worse, EDGE data. In fact, "by the end of 2007," T-Mobile will be the only provider in Germany to offer EDGE throughout its GSM network. Whoopee. Sorry, no mention of unlimited data or free WiFi hotspots but we'll update you as soon as we know.

When you open up 15, you will see 15 tiles numbered 1-15. The board will jumble itself up (40 times!) and your job is to get it back in order. Here's where the twist comes in - you don't drag the pieces, you tilt your iPhone and let gravity do the work for you!

Think Yahtzee! Fun, and easy to play. Great game for killing a time since it will hold your place. Play whenever you want. The iPhone is a great platform for a native version of this game. Enjoy!
Release notes:
Prior to .8b this was very much a proof of concept. The last time I wrote a Yahtzee game was nearly 17 years ago, in HyperCard. After getting an iPhone I found myself missing having Yahtzee on my cell phone. I was also looking for projects to get a little more familiar with the current iPhone development. Once the game was playable and released, I branched off at .2.8b, and rewrote large portions of the code. These changes have made the game more stable, faster, and most importantly more fun to play.

This is the moment you've been waiting for, Kingdom Hearts fans! Tokyo Game Show is underway, and guess what? We now know the names of the three new Kingdom Hearts games! The Square Enix Conference is going on as we type! And believe it or not, this is official stuff! Thanks to 1up, which gives us the official information, we now know the new titles of the games along with some descriptions.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days for Nintendo DS
-appears to star Roxas from Kingdom Hearts II
-looks like there is four-player simultaneous play using members of Organization XIII.
-It will be in full 3D. Kingdom Hearts: Coded for Mobile Game:
-Looks like it's for Japanese cell phones.
-It stars the main characters. (Sora and Co.)
-Seems to be set between the first and second PlayStation 2 titles. [Bits like this are speculation from the presentation of course]
and also mentioned was :
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for PSP:
-Looks like a singleplayer game similar to the Playstation 2 games.
-This is not Kingdom Hearts III.
-1UP is guessing the protagonist of this game is a young man that looks a lot like Zack from Final Fantasy 7. KHInsider is guessing they mean Terra from the Famitsu scans today.

It looks like those complaining of problems with the iPod touch's screen weren't seeing things, as Apple has now reportedly confirmed that at least some early units did indeed ship with defective screens. That bit of news comes at the tail end of a review of the player by none other than Walt Mossberg, who reports that Apple says the problem affected a "small number of units" and that it is "being remedied." Exactly what that remedy entails, however, is unclear, as is the exact number of units affected. In related news, there's also been a few unconfirmed reports cropping up of similarly dim screens on newer iPhones, with the problem seemingly traced to units released after the now infamous price cut. No word from Apple on that, but if your new iPhone's display looks a little off, feel free to let us know.

Would you like to jot down notes on your iPhone's gorgeous touch screen? Are you missing a way to sketch a simple diagram as a quick reminder? Will your children like to draw on your iPhone, maybe on top of a picture you shoot with the camera? Sketches is a native iPhone application that will allow you to do all that. Scribble your thoughts quickly, select a picture from your photo album to draw notes on top, or shoot a photo of your friend just for the sake of putting a moustache on her face You can even erase your drawing by shaking your iPhone, as if it were an etch-a-sketch!
Release notes:
Sketches 0.2 alpha already allows you to draw on the screen, select a picture from the photo album or shoot a photo to draw on top of it.

A version of Navizon Virtual GPS is now available for the iPhone.
For those of you who are not familiar with this stuff, Navizon is a positioning system that triangulates signals from Wifi access points and Cellular towers. It is based on a collaborative database where users who have a GPS device can contribute data on Cell towers and Wifi APs locations that will let other members of the community simulate a Virtual GPS on their phone.
The best way to install Navizon is through Installer.app (if you have it installed on your iPhone already). You can also download the zip file directly.
This application will be fully functional for 15 days. If you like it, you can purchase it for $24.99. But for those of you who of you who may wonder what this money is used for, it isn't going in the authors pocket. It is used to pay the ones who do the hard work of collecting the data without whom this service wouldn't be possible.
PDRoms Note: This software isn't exactly 100% free, but as the author doesnt make money from it and the money is used to improve the given service, it made it on the main page.

We aren't saying that this is a widespread issue just yet, but a (rightfully) annoyed tipster has informed and shown us that his "refurbished" 8GB iPhone seems to have the same "negative black issue" that some iPod touch owners are currently grumbling about. Granted, he admits that the photo makes things look a little worse than they do in person, but the problem is still apparent. So, dear readers, are any of you experiencing iPod touch-like display issues on your iPhone?

We don't foresee Apple chasing folks down that have modified their iPhone or anything, but at least one case has proven that you may want to return your handset to stock before attempting to have it serviced. According to a recent report, a handset running "some third-party apps" and operating on T-Mobile was flat out rejected when it entered an Apple store for service. More specifically, the employee reportedly said that "the warranty was voided," and added that the mobile was "blacklisted" against future service or return. 'Course, the owner did manage to coerce the Apple store manager to allow a return (albeit with a 10-percent restocking fee added on), but we'd highly recommend reverting your iPhone to AT&T mode before begging for service just in case.

ApolloIM is an instant messaging client for iPhone's.
Changes:
Added support for DotMac, ICQ, MSN in addition to AIM. Through libpurple.
Buddylist notification of open conversation
Multiple account sign on - I've been on 8 accounts at once, although, I wouldn't recommend more than 2-3 active accounts on edge, otherwise it gets slow real quick
Sectioned buddy list by accounts
Away / Unaway via the pretty green dot in the upper right. Tap it, turns red, you're away. Tap it again, turns green, you're back.
Support for Alias'd buddy names.
Support for Status Messages - shows up in the buddy list
Time Stamps in conversation windows
Removed Buddyinfo, for now
Preparing to add a pane to "Settings" - eliminates need for "Prefs" button for us, will allow extended user options
Completely brand new UI.
Entire application is brand new, recoded from the bottom up. Stability should be amazingly enhanced.
Wifi Keepalive still requires summerboard.

Mark/Space has announced The Missing Sync for iPhone, a new synchronization tool for iPhone users. It’s coming in the fourth calendar quarter of 2007 for $39.95.
The latest installment of Mark/Space’s The Missing Sync family of sync products, The Missing Sync for iPhone provides users with the ability to migrate data like contacts, tasks, events and photos from Palm OS, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones. The software will also let you archive, browse and search iPhone call logs, SMS text messages and notes.
Missing Sync for iPhone keeps a record of incoming and outgoing text messages exchanged with the iPhone. Once they’ve been transferred to the Mac, users can search and sort the messages in an iChat-style threaded view.
The Call Log app lets users look up recent calls and track calls for time tracking or billing. You can export the logs to other applications like Excel or FileMaker Pro. The iPhone notes also can be transferred to other applications, such as Yojimbo, Entourage or Mark/Space Notebook, which is included with the software.
System requirements will call for Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later.

It was rumored last week, and Apple has now confirmed it:
'Apple said today that a firmware update to the iPhone due to be released later this week "will likely result" in SIM-unlocked iPhones turning into very expensive bricks...
So what are users of SIM-unlocked iPhones to do? Not run the latest software update, that's for sure. Users can instead pray to the hacking deities — the famed iPhone Dev Team that released the free software unlock, and iPhoneSIMfree, which released a commercial software unlock — to write applications that will undo the unlocks, as it were, if those users want to run the latest iPhone software.'

Apple's recent decision to void warranties for folks that unlocked their iPhones may wind them up in legal hot water.
The site Phone News points out that Apple appears to have broken a key warranty law relevant to SIM unlocks. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a law decades old, would seem to prevent Apple from voiding warranties in the way it is threatening to do with the iPhone, or so the site argues.
'The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that Apple cannot void a warranty for a product with third-party enhancements or modifications to their product. The only exception to this rule is if Apple can determine that the modification or enhancement is responsible [for] damaging the product in question ...
The legal [questions are]: Is the SIM Unlock process that has become mainstream doing damage to iPhone? And, also, is Apple designing future software updates to do damage to iPhone when said SIM Unlock code is present?

Erica Sadun is giving an important tip to iPhone users... but read on:
Apple has your unlocked iPhone in their crosshairs. What do you do? This method in no way guarantees that your iPhone will survive the update after being unlocked. If you're risk adverse, you may want to wait a day or two for these instructions to get debugged. And be aware there may be a lock/unlock limit set by hardware...

If you were considering picking up one of Apple's capacious new iPod classics whilst casually snickering at those poor saps dealing with faulty screens on the iPod touch, you could be in for problems of your own. According to a number of reports around the web, users are experience a myriad issues with the new player, including high processor utilization, excruciatingly long connect / disconnect times, and random crashes that seemed to occur when the device attempted to "display preview images taken from album cover art." Some users are also reporting that iTunes will actually "freeze up and stop responding" after the classic is plugged in, and attempts to install firmware updates have apparently not remedied the issues. So, dear readers, how's your iPod classic faring? Are these quibbles legit, or is the intarweb working itself into an unsubstantiated frenzy?

Shortly after Apple released a brief statement yesterday regarding iPhone modifications and their impacts on warranties, the firm's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing has stepped up to clarify a few issues. In a recent interview, Phil Schiller was quoted as saying that the upcoming software update "has nothing to do with proactively disabling a phone that is unlocked or hacked." Furthermore, he added that it was "unfortunate that some programs have caused damage to the iPhone software," but he noted that "Apple could not be responsible for... those consequences." All in all, it doesn't sound like Apple is changing its stance, but it seems safe to say that Cupertino won't be listening to any crying should subsequent updates render your hacked iPhone useless.

Books.app is a simple eBook reader for the iPhone. It reads HTML and text files stored in your Media/EBooks folder, and is smart enough to enter subdirectories, if, for instance, you've broken a book down by chapters.
Changes:
New as of version 1.1
PalmDOC and Plucker support, thanks to Zachary Bedell (all the best hackers are named Zachary). Support is somewhat rudimentary at the moment. I hope to implement auto-splitting for these files in particular--at the moment large PDB books are impractical.
Added GIF support to the image-viewing functionality.
Bug fixes.
Rumor has it a new iPhone Software Update will arrive this week. Please don't forget that Books.app is at Apple's mercy, and it's very possible that after this update, Books.app (and all other third-party programs) will no longer work. (After all, no one's jailbreaked the iPod Touch yet.) So if you're thinking of donating, thank you!--but it's better to wait 'til after the update comes down the pike, in case you're never able to run the program again.

Are you ready to have your brain go flying out of the back of your skull? If you said yes, be prepared to lose your mind... repeatedly. One of the Holy Grails / Seven Wonders of the iPhone World has been loosed upon the Earth today, namely: VoIP. According to a company called Truphone, they have unlocked the secret of IP telephony on the iPhone, and demonstrated said ability today at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego. Executing commands via the Terminal (i.e., on a phone which had been Jailbreak-ed), Truphone CEO James Tagg was able to call another mobile phone using only an IP connection -- all without breaking the SIM lock. According to the company, the software is still in beta, but they soon plan to have a version which will simplify activation, and allow seamless switching between WiFi and SIM use. Clearly, an exciting development for iPhone users, but a cringe-inducing situation for AT&T.

1.5.0 [nervegas] Fixed navbar so buttons update when in landscape mode
Use fclose() instead of close() in LoadROM
Added "Sensory Pad" preference option, good for RPGs I guess
Cleaned up controller selection code and filenames
Enlarged "A & B" hot spot in portrait mode
Tweaked color palette for optimal display on iPhone
Stabilized frame skip, less jerkiness, fewer changes
Added color palette preferences option (old palette = C)
[jordan] Optimized scanline rendering routine

It looks like the iPhone's not the only touchscreen-based Apple device getting an update today, with the iPod touch now also moving on up to version 1.1.1. While it's yet to be confirmed, some users at the MacRumors forums are reporting that the update (which clocks in at a hefty 150MB) actually fixes some of the screen problems that users have been experiencing on the device -- still no calendar editing though. For its part, Apple only describes the update as containing "bug fixes," although touch users needn't go very far to see exactly what that entails, with the update now available though iTunes.

So as the first iPhone owners update their phones to firmware 1.1.1, we're getting reports in that not only do third-party applications no longer work, but a post-update reactivation requires a genuine AT&T SIM. In other words, it looks like Apple may have just disabled thousands of unlocked phones around the world. Stay tuned for more as we test this ourselves...

Changes:
Version 0.3 brings many improvements, such as the ability to select pencils and colors, a library of stationery to use for your background, saving your work to the photo library (so that you can synchronize back to your computer), send to mail and undo. For the future we shall add geometric shapes, complex shapes (stamps) and many other ideas we will be thrilled to develop.

This iPhone application adds a small envelope icon in the taskbar when you have an unread email message and a small speech bubble when you have an unread SMS message. It is useful for reminding you from anywhere within the iPhone user interface that you have an unread message, even if you have previously pressed the "Ignore" button. This includes the lock screen.
Yes! You can finally check your email from the lock screen (assuming you have your email set to auto check)
After the initial blue popup when an SMS message is received, the only place in the UI in which you are reminded of the unread message is the home screen, which as we all know is not where you spend the majority of your time!
This application is possibly even more useful for email because you're never actually notified of these anywhere other than the home screen.
Changes:
taskbar-notifier 0.7 (Now only checks your inbox :-) once again, slightly polished icons)

MobileNuker is a windows RPC Nuke Attack Client for iPhone. This application is only intended for use on your own network targeting your own specially set-up Windows PCs. It will only work against Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT 4 (pre SP6), Windows XP (pre SP1). Targeted at said operating systems this application will crash the network stack and thus cause a BSOD or activate the shutdown dialogue (XP).
You need to compile the binary on your own! The code is in the SVN.

This is an native iPhone application that use the language packs that created by glen.tw and allow user to change the language setting on the iPhone itself.
The finaly PXL will hopefully included all the language packs and let people install it from the Installer.app, so no need to transfer the language separately.

Field experience has confirmed that if you have a hacked iPhone, it will become an iBrick if you use Software Update to install the latest update on your iPhone. The BBC reports:
'[Apple's] warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update. Apple requires iPhone owners to take out a lengthy contract with AT&T in the United States but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.'
The only 'solution' is to unhack your iPhone."

Well before the iPhone became anything more than a pipe dream, folks were clamoring for a truly updated iPod -- one that featured more pixels, a widescreen display and wireless capabilities at the very least. As the iPhone finally came to fruition, hopes were yet again dashed as Apple forced anyone desperate for the aforementioned PMP to also purchase a new cellphone, not to mention live with merely 8GB of storage at the high-end. Thankfully for us all, Cupertino finally saw fit to release the phoneless iPhone, which seemed to combine all of our previous wishes into one very sleek -- save for that black notch in the rear -- device. Shortly thereafter, users began kvetching over seemingly widespread display issues, the inability to natively use it in Disk Mode and the 16GB cap on capacity. Furthermore, who could forget the way our dreams were crushed when the Bluetooth caper ended with inconclusive results? And yes, we're still wondering why we can't add calendar appointments on this thing.
That being said, here's your chance to rip, rag on or reiterate your love for Apple's long-awaited iPod touch. How would you have done things differently? What features would have been added and what hardware changes would've been made? Oh, and why isn't this thing available in iPod whiteâ„¢?

If you haven't already bitten the bullet and taken your unlocked iPhone down that scariest of paths, the 1.1.1 update, we're here to sort out a bit of the hearsay from the actual and fairly inconvenient truth. Even if you have already updated, or never even unlocked or jailbroke your iPhone to begin with, there's still a lot to learn, so let's dive in, shall we?
Most people with a jailbroken iPhone will end up with a "factory-fresh" iPhone after the 1.1.1 firmware update. Your mileage may vary, and isolated incidents of bricking have occurred, but most people are just going to have a 3rd party-free, AT&T-only iPhone in their pocket when the day is through, and bricking seems to be just as common for a virgin iPhones as for jailbroken ones. As for when we'll have full use of the iPhone again is unclear, but TUAW's Erica Sadun says "don't expect a jailbreak anytime soon," which doesn't seem promising. Apparently the security is going to be a whole lot harder to crack this time around.
As for unlocked iPhones, you should probably hold off for the time being. The most serious problems we're hearing so far relate to iPhone Dev Team's anySIM unlock, which has left some iPhones "bricked" with an "Incorrect SIM" error message (seen above). That's not to say a workaround won't be found in the future, but for now anySIM users should certainly stay away from 1.1.1. SuperSIM and TurboSIM users are also advised not to update, but we have less solid info about that. iPhoneSIMfree users seem to be in fine shape as long as they're rocking an AT&T SIM card -- though that does seem to defeat the purpose of an unlocked iPhone in the first place. Please let us know about your personal experience with the update on an unlocked phone so we can get a clearer picture of the exact damage, but it's probably best for you to restore your phone to to a factory state before 1.1.1 rather than risking it all for our benefit.
Still, there are still plenty of ways you can stick it to the man. For starters, don't upgrade to 1.1.1! There's no telling when the iPhone will be re-hacked at all, and if you're interested in running 3rd party apps or using a non-AT&T SIM then 1.0.2 is where it's at for the time being. If you do feel like sending your pre-1.1.1 iPhone back to a "virgin" 1.0.2 state, there are methods for doing so that will give you a fresh iPhone with all sorts of unlocking and jailbreaking potential, along with providing the "safest" state for your iPhone to be in before a 1.1.1 update if do you choose to perform one. If you are staying away from 1.1.1, naturally be careful to reject any of iTunes' friendly offers to update your phone, and it can't hurt to disable "Check for updates automatically" in iTunes preferences. Apple won't be "pushing" the update on you, so if you do run it and break something, it's your own dang warranty-voiding fault -- though jailbreaking doesn't actually modify anything beyond your software, so you shouldn't have much to worry about as long as Apple doesn't decide to get nasty.
However, should you happen to ignore all these dire warnings and brick your phone in the process, there are reports of Apple Geniuses unbricking iPhones at Apple Stores, despite warnings posted to the contrary, as long as that phone hasn't been unlocked. Even if you have unlocked, it can't hurt to ask, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best!
There are also still ways to add your own homebrew (read: free) ringtones to your 1.0.2 iPhone, even when running iTunes 7.4.2. Just pick your poison: iPhone RingToneMaker (Windows), Ringtonator Studio (Mac), or iToner (Mac). Sadly, iToner developer Ambrosia Software says that 1.1.1 breaks this hack, but they're working on a workaround.
Before we go, we'd be lying to you if we said there aren't some legitimate reasons to upgrade, so we'll run them by you real fast -- just in case you needed any more reasons to be conflicted about updating your iPhone.
iTunes WiFi Music Store (the true promise of a WiFi DAP finally achieved)
Louder speakerphone and receiver volume (it's about time, we only hope it's loud enough)
Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls (just like the iPod touch)
Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space (BlackBerry-style)
Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape (another one struck off the "duh" list)
Stocks and cities in Stock and Weather can be re-ordered (ditto)
Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar (but it's still a ripoff)
Support for TV Out (and the joy of paying through the nose for new cables)
Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
New Passcode lock time intervals
Adjustable alert volume

The iPhone 1.1.1 update has a hidden little surprise for y'all: Bluetooth audio streaming is now available off of your iPhone for whatever you darn please, meaning you can finally listen to music from the phone wirelessly. Oddly enough, this "function" has been unleashed by a Visual Voicemail bug that leaves Bluetooth audio on even after you've left the Voicemail interface. Of course, it's only mono audio, and the audio keeps playing out of your built-in speaker -- if you plug in headphones to cut off the speaker you'll lose Bluetooth streaming as well -- but it's nice to see Apple forking over some "should have been there in the first place" functionality accidentally to go along with all that stuff of the same ilk 1.1.1 took away from us.

Well would you look at that, instructions are now available for downgrading your iPhone from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2. It won't downgrade your baseband, meaning so far you can't re-unlock an iPhone that's been 1.1.1-ified, but it's still 1.0.2 in all its third-party application glory. The iPhone Dev Team folks are working on a way to downgrade the new firmware to let people unlock their phones again, but for now AT&T users sitting pretty, and non-AT&T folks can at least do the WiFi thing.

I have no idea what Oblique Strategy cards are so here is the description from the homepage.
This is a deck of cards for the musically inclined. They can be used to solve problems with rather "oblique" answers.
This project was inspired by the Dashboard widget of the same name. This project was created in order to experiment with the coverflow style flip animation as well as device orientation. I had a hard time figuring this stuff out so I thought I would post the source code for others.
- Tap the card to flip over
- You can swipe thru cards at random by swiping the display only when the card back is showing.
Try swiping in every direction.
Visit the homepage at http://code.google.com/p/iphone-oblique/ for the downloads.
