Google announced a new version of Android this week with some impressive new features, but it's unclear if it's done enough to solve a problem that has dogged its mobile OS: fragmentation. Even as it announced the imminent launch of Android 4.1, or Jelly Bean, the majority of users are still running Gingerbread, which is three major releases behind. According to Google's own figures, just 7 percent are running the current version, Ice Cream Sandwich, which launched last October. That means apps that tap into the latest innovations in the OS aren't available to most Android users. It also means developers, the lifeblood of the platform, are forced to test their apps across multiple devices and multiple versions of the OS. So when Google's Hugo Barra announced a Platform Developer Kit during the opening keynote at I/O this week, the news was greeted with applause. The PDK will provide Android phone makers with a preview version of upcoming Android releases, making it easier for them to get the latest software in their new phones. But is the PDK enough to secure for developers the single user experience for big numbers of Android users that developers crave? In a 'fireside chat' with the Android team, the packed house of developers had more questions about OS fragmentation than Google had answers.

Virgin Mobile is offering the iPhone to its prepaid customers as of today. The Sprint-owned subsidiary is using the event to kickstart a new retail strategy that will see the company open branded retail stores in Chicago -- with a nationwide rollout dependent upon its success. Since all carriers have to make a minimum commitment to Apple in order to receive the handset, it's interesting to see that Virgin's allocation forms part of Sprint's $15.5 billion gamble on the handset that's still yet to pay off. The handset will set users back $650 for a 16GB iPhone 4S, while plans begin at $30 for 300 voice minutes, unlimited messages and data, but only if they commit to automatic monthly payments.

The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to getSwords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google's new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it'll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

If you want the $250, 16GB version of Google and Asus' brand-spanking-newNexus 7 tablet, don't have $250 handy, but do have a pile of other touch devices and games laying around, Gamestop may be able to work with you.
The retail chain is currently taking pre-orders for the higher capacity version of the Nexus 7, which is expected to ship sometime in the next few weeks. It's also now accepting Android tablets as trade-ins, and all trade-ins applied directly towards the purchase of a Nexus 7 will have their values bolstered by an additional 30 percent. For the beginning of its production run, the Nexus 7 will include a $25 credit for use in the Google Play store and the "experience" that is Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
If $250 is a little rich for your blood, or you don't think you'll need a whole 16GB of storage, both the $200 8GB and $250 16GB models of the Nexus 7 are available for pre-order directly from Google.

A remake of 1990's Final Fantasy 3, based on the DS version, is now available on Google's Android operating system, boasting "3D visuals and story sequences only for Android," as well as improved browsing functionality for the monster bestiary and new designs for the Job Mastery cards, according to the game's listing on Google Play.
The port will set you back $15.99 and requires that your device runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) or newer. Alternatively, you could buy the iPhone version, Famicom version for about the same price, or the DS version for about $40. You could also go back in time and prevent the Wonderswan Color port from getting informally cancelled, but that might require significantly more effort/less eBay.

Manufacturers and operators line up for HTML5-based system
Support is building for Mozilla’s plans to launch a new open mobile OS based on HTML5 and carrying the Firefox brand.
Device manufacturers TCL Communication Technology (under the Alcatel One Touch brand) and ZTE have announced their intentions to produce the first Firefox devices, while operators including Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telenor and Telefónica are backing the open OS.
The Firefox OS for mobile devices is built on Mozilla’s Boot to Gecko project, which unlocks many of the limitations of web development on mobile, allowing HTML5 applications to access the underlying capabilities of a phone, previously only available to native applications.
Matthew Key, Chairman & CEO of Telefónica Digital commented, “Firefox OS will deliver a higher performance than current low cost smartphones can achieve, enabling more people to benefit from a better experience. This is crucial for us to accelerate the adoption of smartphones in developing markets.
"The breadth of support for this initiative across the industry makes it clear that there is an opportunity in the market for a new, open mobile ecosystem.”

The study from UK supermarket Asda shows that 18 per cent of phone owners use their phone while on the toilet, generating the trend known as 'throne calls', which dips slightly to 11 per cent for women.
Meanwhile, one per cent of gentlemen use the tech during 'intimate moments'.
In all, 98 per cent of Brits own a mobile phone, with one in 50 users checking their phone at least every five minutes per day, equivalent to a staggering 73,000 phone moments each year.
This is largely dominated by teens, with 60 per cent checking their phones every 15 minutes, compared to 48 per cent of over 60s that only use their phone when it rings.
41 per cent use the devices in queues and waiting rooms the most, while second-screen use is demonstrated as 37 per cent do so when watching films and TV at home.

Pays $60m to Chinese firm. Now free to develop the world's largest territory.
Apple has ended its trademark dispute with Proview Technology (Shenzhen), paying the Chinese firm $60m for the iPad trademark.
The lawsuit had caused a delay to the launch of the latest iPad and damaged sales in some Chinese provinces.
Proview Technology was also seeking an export ban on all iPads manufactured in China – a move that would have severely diminished Apple's global sales.
It began when Apple bought ownership of the iPad trademark from Proview in 2009.
However, the Chinese company argued the US firm dealt with only one unit of Proview and did not include the Chinese mainland and a Chinese court ruled that Proview Technology (Shenzhen) owned the name in China.

Apple with this October launch an iPad Mini to rival Google’s new Nexus 7, a US analyst has predicted.
The new device, Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves told CNet, will boast a 7.85 inch screen, carry 8GB of internal storage and retail for $299.
Hargreaves predicts sales of 10m in the last quarter of 2012 and 35.2m unit sales in FY 2013.
He also predicts that sales of the ‘regular’ 9.7 inch iPad would be cannibalised by around 25 per cent, with overall iPad sales growth increasing by over 25m in FY 2013 as a result of the launch.
IDC's research director of Mobile Connected Devices’s Tom Mainelli added of the rumours: "If Apple launches a sub-$300, 7-inch product into the market later this year as rumoured, we expect the company's grip on this market to become even stronger."
Google last week revealed its $199 Nexus 7 tablet, complete with seven-inch screen. It is expected to be released in July.

Ready for some hardcore smartphone market share numbers? ComScore's got 'em for the three-month period ending in May 2012, and you probably won't be terribly surprised by the outcome. First, let's tackle smartphone platforms: Apple and Google posted minor increase month-over-month at 0.5 and 0.1 percent, respectively (1.7 and 0.8 over a three-month span). Microsoft (consisting of Windows Phoneand Windows Mobile) didn't budge between April and May, though it nudged up a tenth of a percentage point since February. RIM dropped 0.2 percent over one month, but it already experienced a much more painful sting -- 2.0 percent -- during the three-month period. Symbian also went through similar concerns, going down 0.2 percent month-over-month and 0.4 percent since February.
As for specific manufacturers, Apple once again comes out on top, adding 1.5 percent to its customer base over the last three months for a total of 15 percent share. Samsung, still leading the pack in total market share at 25.7 percent, only grew by 0.1. Given the OEM's success in deploying the Galaxy S III to every major US carrier, we suspect that number will spurt up even higher over the next quarter. Among the companies losing share: LG, Motorola and HTC, losing 0.3, 0.8 and 0.2 percent, respectively.

Okay, so VLC may not be the media darling it once was, but it still has a legion of fans -- as evidenced by the (official) beta version's warm welcome over at Google Play. Despite a clear warning that the build is unstable and might "kill your kitten," users report mostly smooth multi-format video playback on a wide range of devices running Android 2.1 and up, and any jitters will no doubt be resolved over time -- the whole point is that it's open-source and ripe for improvement.

Some of the folks who worked on Dead Space and Dante's Inferno now have a mobile studio, PlaySide, and unless the above image is hiding a dark secret, its first game is a drastic departure from its violent, intense past. Catch the Ark is an endless runner starring "three lovable characters that weren't allowed on to Noah's Ark," and who are doomed to raft down raging rapids and floods to survive. Actually, that does sound pretty dark after all.
Catch the Ark is in development for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, and is set to launch in Q3 2012. PlaySide promises "console-quality" graphics, unlockable elements, multiplayer modes and social features, alongside those three adorable almost-animals doomed to drown in an ancient apocalypse. Or something less sinister, but we're banking on doom and gloom for this one.

Continuing its partnerships with interesting indies (Studio Pixel, Nifflas, etc.), developer and publisher Nicalis is bringing Sophie Houlden's vector-style racing/puzzle/maze game Swift Stitch to iOS on July 5.
It's difficult to explain the mechanics – hold a button to turn, hit certain barriers to flip horizontal or vertical direction – so instead allow us to direct you to this browser-based demo. The simple one-button controls seem perfectly matched to touchscreen devices, though maybe our brains aren't perfectly matched to the game, as our frequent and sudden meetings with walls would suggest.
The iOS version will be free to download, with ten levels available in the initial version. The full game is available as an in-app purchase for .99, or $1.99 after launch week.

European figures are equally impressive, totalling $959 million.
US consumers $1.38 billion spent on digital game content in the first quarter of 2012.
On top of the $1.5 billion spent on new physical video and PC game software, The NPD Group has found that US consumers spent a further $1.38billion on digital content.
This includes full games and add-ons, subscriptions, mobile games and social network games.
Anita Frazier (pictured), industry analyst at The NPD Group, said: “The declines in the physical market for new physical software are well documented…. While the growth in digital format sales does not yet offset the declines in physical format sales, clearly the changes occurring within the industry are reflected in the trends we are seeing in the research."
Similar research in the UK, France and Germany shows that digital format sales in those three countries generated an additional $959 million in sales during Q1 2012. Outside of new physical retail, sales totalled $300m.
Frazier said: “Relative to the spend in the US, we find that the consumer spend on mobile games is still developing in the three European countries we are covering, while the spend on full game and add-on content digital downloads and subscriptions is more highly developed.”

The ongoing patent dispute between Samsung and Apple has stepped up a level as Google has entered the fray.
Last week, the US District Court for Northern California granted Apple an injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, which appears to have been the catalyst for Google’s involvement
A Samsung insider was reported as saying: ““It’s too early to comment on our game plan [with Google] in the legal battle; but we will do our best to get more royalties from Apple, which has benefited from our technology”
Samsung is demanding Apple pay 2.4 per cent of the retail price of iPhones and iPads to use its technology. However, the Cupertino-based company claims the rate is excessive.
Apple is also seeking injunctions against Samsung’s products for copying the design of the iPhone and iPad.

Concept device is “built to be hacked”.
Start-up company Ouya has got some serious weight behind its Android-powered games console device.
While the gadget was designed by Yves Behar of Jawbone Jamboxand One Laptop Per Child fame, the project's advisors include Ed Fries of Xbox fame and IGN’s Julie Uhrman is listed as founder and CEO.
The company’s AngelList page says:
- Open, accessible game console for the biggest market in games: TV.
- Any developer can publish games, just like mobile or social games today (but like no other console game platform). Orders of magnitude less expensive to develop.
- Inexpensive enough for every consumer to buy, $99, and all the games are free to play. Every console is a dev kit; build peripherals, root the system – built to be hacked.
- Built with Android as embedded OS.

A study has found that Apple’s Siri assistant gives the wrong answer over 30 per cent of the time.
According to Digital Trends, the study was conducted by Piper Jaffray, who asked a total of 1600 questions in both a crowded Minneapolis street and a quiet room.
According to the results, Siri was capable of understanding 83 per cent of the questions on the street and 89 per cent of questions in the quiet room. However, it was with the results that the software faltered, showing just 62 per cent accuracy on the street and 68 per cent accuracy in the quiet room.
In contrast, Google’s voice assistant operated with around 86 per cent accuracy.
Apparently the discrepancy lies in the way that Siri retrieves its search results – mainly through Google but with a little extra help from the review site Yelp and the Wolfram Alpha search engine.
Overall the study awaded Apple’s voice assistant a D, while Google’s received a B+.
“In order to become a viable mobile search alternative, Siri must match or surpass Google's accuracy of B+ and move from a grade D to a B or higher,” commented Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster.

Well, it looks like there's still a few surprises left from HP's brief foray into webOS hardware. As webOS Nation has discovered, the design firm Transparent House posted a brief clip of a device described as "WindsorNot" some eight months ago, which is very clearly a touchscreen-only webOS smartphone. As the site notes, that appears to be the very same device that had previously turned up in leaked photosunder the codename "Stingray," and it estimates that the phone has the same 3.6-inch screen as the Pre 3. Details are scarce beyond that, but you can get a good look at what might have been in the video after the break -- not to mention yet another look at the unreleased TouchPad Go (a.k.a. Opal) on Transparent House's Vimeo page linked below.

Rumours of an iPad Mini have been rife for sometime, though Apple has continued to produce 9.7-inch tablets only.
Now, Bloomberg reckons Apple is gearing up to release a rival with a seven to eight-inch screen.
This would be a direct hit against the Nexus, which it seems Apple is treating with concern even though other tablets have failed to offer much of a threat.
Apple's latest iPad came sporting a Retina-display, but it's thought to be ditching that for the mini model.
Presumably the decision was made to cut costs and bring pricing in line with the high-spec low-priced models like the $199 Kindle Fire.

The exclusive Samsung Galaxy app will offer users unlimited playback of the UK's hottest tracks.
Samsung has already thrown itself into the mosh pit of mobile music streaming with the Music Hub, and it's continuing the rock star movement with the launch of The Official Top 40 Chart app.
White label mobile music solutions firm MusicQubed powers the app, which is an exclusive to Samsung's Galaxy smartphones. It will debut on the Ace II.
Users will be treated to unlimited streaming for all 40 of the songs found in the charts, as compiled by the Official Charts Company.
The memory is cached when the app isn't in use, eliminating the buffering process, while the chart is updated daily to provide the latest playlists.
A celebrity news update feature can be found on the platform too, while social network connectivity allows listeners to share and comment on their latest musical choices.

Makers of grey handsets copy popular devices like the iPhone andSamsung Galaxy, and ship products at between $60 and $120. Since their entry into the handset market in 2005, they have steadily gained traction.
Now, ARC predicts that the grey market will grow over the next two years, eventually peaking in 2013 at nearly 150 million shipments.
Part of the appeal of grey handsets is how they are often first to introduce features that legitimate phones do not have, such as dual SIM functionality, but at a greatly reduced cost.
As a result, grey handsets have considerable penetration levels, accounting for a much as 14 per cent of the overall handset market in several Asia Pacific markets and a worldwide average of seven per cent

Finnish owner threw the device to the ground in apparent fear of flaming buttocks.
17-year-old Henri Helminen was caught on CCTV throwing his iPhone to the floor, 9To5Mac reports, as the device appeared to ignite in his pocket.
The feeling is that the scenario could have been staged, given that it took place on Nokia's Finnish soil.
However, an iPhone threw a similar hissy fit last year, when the device starting glowing red and producing thick smoke.
Meanwhile, a Galaxy S III recently exploded in the user's car while charging, producing white flames.

Angry Birds Space HD Free and reading app Instapaper started crashing immediately at launch.
A number of iOS and Mac developers have reported that Apple's App Store updates are having an adverse effect on their apps, according to The Verge.
One complaint comes from Instapaper, which says its 4.2.3 update crashed instantly, even though Apple had given it the green light to be rolled out.
Maker of the app, Marco Arment, contacted fellow developers to find that they had experienced similar problems, while Apple quietly corrected the error behind the scenes without providing him with an explanation.
Angry Birds Space HD Free was also hit by the glitch, and Arment reckons the only way to resolve the issue without Apple's phantom assistance is to delete the corrupt app and install a clean version.
Meanwhile, the GoodReader app team reported the same fault for their past two updates, and claims it's an App Store error which refuses to read certain coding.

A Microsoft researcher has claimed that smartphones running Google's Android software have been hacked by an illegal botnet.
Whilst Microsoft's own operating software - Windows Phone, is a key competitor to Android, researcher Terry Zink make the claim, stating there was evidence of spam being sent from Yahoo mail servers used by Android devices.
The claims are another blow to Google and its platform which has had to deal with a number of issue recently, including a number of malware infected apps.
The software's official app store - Google Play - has suffered from a number of issues such as an influx of fake apps, which are commonly pirated versions of popular paid products including Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, which are distributed for free.
Mr Zink wrote in a blog post: "A spammer has control of a bonnet that lives on Android devices."
"These devices login to the user's Yahoo Mail account and send spam." the post continues.
When questioned by the BBC on the issue, Google stressed it was working to improve security on the Android platform.
"We are committed to providing a secure experience for consumers in Google Play, and in fact our data shows between the first and second halves of 2011, we saw a 40% decrease in the number of potentially malicious downloads from Google Play," said a spokesperson.

There is a huge amount of innovation occuring on the App Store whilst many of the top console titles have grown stagnant, claims David Darling.
In his latest blog, the Kwalee CEO and Codemasters co-founder said that whilst apps on mobile had been exploring new ideas for gameplay, console titles were increasingly offering little difference between each other.
He added that iOS and Android could also offer extra features such as GPS, touchscreens, accelerometers and mobility, stating consoles needed to adapt to stay relevant.
“There is an immense amount of innovation on the App Store compared to recent console games,” said Darling.
“Big sellers on console like FIFA and Call of Duty change very little each year, whereas many apps are exploring entirely new realms of gameplay.

For months now, rumors of an iPad with a 7.85-inch screen have been circulating through the blogosphere. And though Steve Jobs once said that 7-inch tablets are 'dead on arrival,' the relative success of the Amazon Kindle Fire and other smaller tablets suggests that consumers are more than willing to accept a smaller screen size in exchange for a cheaper buy-in point. Indeed, you might remember that Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said that Apple saw a tremendous uptick in overall iPad sales once it lowered the price of the iPad 2 down to $399. That said, a chorus of credible reports over the past few days have all claimed that Apple is currently working on a slimmed down iPad and that it may be set for release as early as this Fall.

Mind Candy believes that tablets are the future of gaming – and it wants to make the most of it by brining a ‘full’ Moshi Monsters app to iPad.
With over 60m registered users, the desktop version has already been joined by some spin-off iOS apps, as well as DS title Moshi Monsters: Moshlings.
But Mindy Candy’s chief executive Michael Acton-Smith wants to ensure his company is ready for the future.
"We're hopefully going to launch Pocket Moshi or Moshi-on-the-Move or whatever it's called in the next few months," he told The Guardian.
"We're going to make it free, and hopefully have millions of kids playing it. 18 months ago, we were saying like most people 'are kids really going to have mobiles? Are parents going to buy Ł500 iPads for their kids? And the answer is absolutely yes.”
"We really firmly believe at Mind Candy that the tablet device is going to be the dominant form of entertainment for kids over the next few years. If we just focused on desktop, in the next year or two we'd be a dinosaur."
The company’s tablet aspirations span wider than this, however. Acton-Smith wants to see the company evolve into a content provider for third parties, with the idea being that it would be a safe, reliable source that parents can have confidence in.
"This could be a great opportunity for promoting new apps that third parties have developed," he added. "We're almost thinking of Mind Candy as a publisher curating apps that we'd like to promote to our audience.
"Until recently, great ideas could get lucky and bubble up. We've seen Angry Birds and Talking Tom and a host great stuff, but that's getting harder and harder.
“That's where we see potential for us to come along as a publisher… We can curate new apps and say 'this is fantastic', and present it to our audience."

Earlier this morning, reports started circulating that the App Store was pushing corrupt binaries to iOS and Mac users, resulting in constant crashes of the affected apps. Marco Arment, of Instapaper fame, was one of the first to notice and very vocal -- bringing the issue to the attention of many in the media and at Apple. The list of affected apps is pretty staggering, including such high profile titles as Angry Birds Space, Yahoo! Search, Google Reader and, of course, Instapaper. The number of developers affected now tops 115, so we'd hold off on those updates. For the first several hours Apple was mum on the issue, but it has finally acknowledged the problem in the support forums and even reached out to developers via email. Suspicions seem to be that the FairPlay DRM is at the root, but until we have official word from Apple we'll refrain from laying the blame at its feet. Cupertino is working (we assume tirelessly) on a fix, which will hopefully be delivered sooner, rather than later.

In the months following its split from Ericsson, Sony has embarked on an unrelenting marketing drive by launching numerous Xperia devices.
And the firm continues to promote its flagship brand with the 'Xperia Unleashed' campaign, which invites people to hunt down 'Xperiabots' in London and Manchester to win prizes.
These can be found in both physical and print forms across train stations etc, with location clues churned up by the 'Leader Bot' on the @xperiaunleashed Twitter account and #xperiaunleashed hashtag.
By uploading alpha numeric/QR codes to the Sony Facebook page, competitors have the chance to win Xperia NXT handsets, movie premieres, DJ sessions and gig tickets.

For the first time ever, malware has successfully made its way into an available app on the iOS App Store.
Wired has reported that a Russian-language app called Find and Call contained a Trojan virus that uploaded users’ address books to a remote server. The virus also spammed all phone and email contacts with links to the app and logged the handset’s GPS coordinates.
Wired reported: "It should be noted that the app does, in a way, seek permission to access the user's address book by asking if the user wants to 'find friends in a phone book.' But when the user agrees, the app surreptitiously swipes the contact data and then uses it to send out spam to the user's contacts while making it appear that the spam is coming from the user so that it looks to the recipient like it's coming from someone he or she knows. The spam message includes a link for the recipient to download the Find and Call app.
The rogue app's theft of contact information appears to have been limited to Russian iOS users, but the issue raises serious questions about the safety of the App Store and its claims of invulnerability.
It has now been removed from the App Store.
The app was also released on the Google Play Store (no stranger to dodgy downloads), but has since been removed.

Pac Man, Final Fantasy and Ridge Racer amongst 22 titles to hit the smartphone range.
The Nokia Store has supported more than 5bn app downloads, which has been driven by 411 developers each reaching the 1m mark, while India Games, Pico Bros, and Inode have collectively accounted for more than 100 million downloads.
In an attempt to build on the figures, the Finnish OEM has partnered with games publisher Namco Bandai to offer 22 retro arcade games to users of its Symbian-powered touchscreen Asha devices.
The Asha phones were launched just last month, and are targeted towards 'urban youngsters', most of which will likely be unfamiliar with the classic titles on offer like Pac-Man, Final Fantasy, and Ridge Racer.
The games will be priced between 99c and $2.99, and will be available to over 52 countries.
James Kucera, head of mobile for Namco Bandai Games America, said: "Our partnership with Nokia perfectly illustrates the strengths of our brand's experience and leadership in the mobile games industry and fits our mutual resolve to bring games to all mobile users worldwide."

More than 70 per cent of those are iPads.
According to YouGov's latest quarterly Tablet Tracker report, in May 2012, eight per cent of the UK population owned a tablet - that's about three million owners in the UK.
The data showed that Apple's iPad is still dominant, with more than 70 per cent of tablet owners having one, and the new iPad alone has managed to capture 11 per cent of the market since its release earlier in the year.
Since the last quarter, Apple's overall share has slipped four percentage points due to the growing competition from the likes of Samsung (seven per cent share in the market).
In news that will please Samsung and Google, nearly half of current tablet owners (45 per cent) are considering switching their devices, with many citing price as the main reason.
John Gilbert, consulting director of YouGov's technology and telecoms sector, says: "While Apple continue to set the standards of tablet quality, Samsung and other manufacturers are fast approaching and exceeding Apple on price metrics.

New Yorkshire-based developer to bring franchise to iOS and handheld platforms, claims UKIE chairman
Activision Leeds is developing a new Call of Duty mobile game, claims UKIE chairman Andy Payne.
Speaking to VideoGamer, Payne said that the new Yorkshire-based studio would be responsible for all handheld and iOS games in the blockbuster franchise going forward.
He said that some of the assets used throughout the franchise by the likes of Infinity Ward and Treyarch would again be used by the Leeds team for its upcoming titles.
Payne however refused to state whether the mobile studio was working on upcoming Vita game Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified.
"Activision are like a machine," said Payne. "I have to be careful what I say about these guys because I know them so well and they'll cane me.

Remember the melted Samsung Galaxy S III that surfaced in an Irish forum a few weeks ago? Samsung said they were looking into it and, along with a third party investigation, have decided it occurred as a result of "external energy" being applied to the device, not anything from within the phone itself. The damage is apparently consistent with the phone going in the microwave. The original poster dillo2k10 has posted an update on Boards.ie, indicating it was a mistake by someone else in an attempt to recover the phone after it got wet. The Samsung Tomorrow post linked cites a report from Fire Investigations UK finding that the phone itself was not responsible for generating the heat that caused the damage, so GSIII owners (and the pockets of their skinny jeans) should be able to breathe easier.

If you've been eyeing flat surfaces with bad intent since the new Samsung Galaxy Beam projector smartphone was announced, it's now ready for your schemes -- at least in the UK. Expansys is showing the light-shooting device in stock, replete with its 4-inch WVGA screen, 1GHz dual-core Cortex A9, 768MB of RAM and 8GB storage, at a price of Ł395 ($615). The projector itself radiates 15 lumens and displays an nHD (640 x 360) image up to 50 inches across. At 12.5mm (0.5 inches), Samsung claims it to be the world's thinnest projector phone, so if you need something pocketable for those impromptu presentations -- or even to save your bacon -- check the source to snag one.

Aftermarket keyboard layouts are still relatively rare among tablets, which makes KeyPoint Technologies' new Adaptxt beta for Android tablets that much more valuable. Along with optionally splitting up the keyboard to make thumb typing that much gentler, it expands on the stock keyboard formula with aggressive word prediction and shortcuts for words or whole sentences. The wait for a tablet version has also rewarded the patient with a handwriting recognition extra, just in case they'd like to revive cursive writing as an art form. The beta is is free to use for anyone who's running at least Android 2.3 on a big-screened slate, although only for a "limited period" -- if you're willing to accept a few rough edges, we'd recommend hitting the source links before there's a price tag attached.

During his session at the Rezzed event in Brighton, 22Cans founder Peter Molyneux announced an August 22 release date for the studio's first title, Curiosity. The game will be coming to PC, Android, and iOS.
Curiosity will involve players dismantling a cube comprised of 60 million smaller cubes in order to find out what's at the center. The game supports up to a million players chipping away at the cube at one time, with additional pickaxes sold via microtransactions. The game's diamond pickaxe will cost players $50,000, a move Molyneux believes is "nothing to be ashamed of."
What at the center of the cube?

[mobile_earth_explorer] sent in an Instructable he put together documenting an Android-controlled rotating monitor stand he built.
The stand itself is three disks turned on a lathe out of a 18mm thick board. After turning these disks, [mobile_earth_explorer] hopped over to his bench grinder and made a semicircular tool to carve out the track for the ball bearings.
Once the disks could rotate freely on each other, the only thing left was to carve out a space for the servo, Arduino, a pair of pots, and the wiring. The pots control the maximum speed of the monitor stand as well as provide a manual rotation control for when your phone is across the room.
[mobile_earth_explorer] wrote the Android app so up to five of these swiveling monitors can be controlled by just one Arduino; yes, that might be overkill for home or office use, but we’re sure it would be highly useful for some sort of presentation.
You can check out a few videos going over the conception and construction of [mobile_earth_explorer]‘s monitor stands after the break.

Google is seeking $4 million from Oracle to cover the costs it incurred during this spring's epic legal battle over the Android mobile operating system, reports Caleb Garling. In a brief filed in federal court on Thursday night, Google lead counsel Robert Van Nest argued that Oracle is required to pay his company's legal costs because judge and jury ruled in favor of Google on almost every issue during the six-week trial. 'Google prevailed on a substantial part of the litigation,' read Google's brief. '[Oracle] recovered none of the relief it sought in this litigation. Accordingly, Google is the prevailing party and is entitled to recover costs.' Google has not publicly revealed an itemized list of its expenses, but the total bill included $2.9 million spent copying and organizing documents. According to the brief, the company juggled a mind-boggled 97 million documents during the case."

The sequel to smartphone hit Tiny Wings lands on July 12th - and one-man-studio Andrew Illiger has released a trailer to celebrate.
In an age of glossy CG trailers or promo footage that features actors trying to capture the feel of a triple-A game, this teaser cuts through with charm.
Scroll down to see the trailer.
Footage shows a Tiny Wings level hand drawn and run through a music box, with a puppet-like bird soaring across the game.
Illiger has revealed nothing about gameplay - indeed, the video itself seems to refer back to the first game's content.
Tiny Wings was named game of the year by Apple Europe at the end of 2011.

And just like that it's back. Following a yesterday's temporary stay of the ban on Google's HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus by Judge Koh, the soon-to-be Jelly Bean-loaded device is again up for sale at the Play store -- and a bit earlier than expected. If you'll recall, Google notes that Android 4.1 apparently mitigates the issues brought up within the dispute by Apple, which has until July 12th to issue a response on the matter. Orders are slated to ship in "two to three weeks," so we'd suggest you grab one quick while it's fresh and tasty to ensure your taste buds get the latest Android sugar fix.

Not all of the numbers are bad around RIM headquarters. The company's celebrating the big three billion -- that's the number of app downloads it's seen since the launch of App World. According to RIM, that number amounts to 2.5 million downloads a day -- certainly nothing to sneeze at. Naturally, Research in Motion is using the opportunity to do some "myth busting," regarding the perceived lack of selection for BlackBerry handsets and the PlayBook tablet. At present, there are 90,000 apps "up for sale" through the mobile app market.

In version 5.18, I added an improved cookie handler to mitigate the tons of warnings spewed out by the Apache HTTP stack as a result of Live’s usage of non-standard expiration dates. The change worked great on just about every emulator and device, but as I found out later, it failed spectacularly on all non-US devices, preventing log-ins for basically everyone outside the States.
With help, I was able to finally narrow down the problem to a localization issue, and 2 releases later, 5.21 fixes log-ins on non-US devices.
The other news is that Spark 360 is now free on Google Play; though it may be a short while until the pricing change propagates.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has declared that smartphones shipments are exceeding those of feature phones.
In a report from China’s Sina Tech (via Tech In Asia) China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed that, over the last three months, smartphones have accounted for 56.9 percent of the phones shipped to retailers in the country.
This figure is going to cause concern for phone manufacturers as feature phones continue to die out. Of the 2,099 new phone models that hit the Chinese market in the last six months, only 822 were smartphones. Of those smartphones, 801 (more than 97 percent) were Android-based.
It has been predicted by Nikko Partners that the number of active smartphones in China will pass 200 million by the end of 2012.

Remember that story about the Samsung Galaxy SIII that blew up? Well, ignore it - an investigation by Samsung has proved that it didn't happen.
The phone's owner had originally claimed on a forum that white flames shot out of the device while he was driving, damaging his car and destroying the phone. Samsung, understandably concerned, vowed to investigate, and investigate they did.
After bringing in Fire Investigations UK (FIUK) it seems that the fire was not caused by the device itself, but by an "external energy."
Investigator Peter Mansi wrote: "The heat damage does not appear to have been from an external heat flux, such as a naked flame
The investigation also stated: "The only way it was possible to produce [the] damage...was to place the device or component parts within a domestic microwave."

Developers are being asked to design apps for 1280 x 800 pixel resolution.
Rumours are circulating around the Amazon tech jungle, with talks of a ten-inch Kindle Fire, and a Kindle smartphone in the pipeline.
And now, AllThingsD reckons the next Kindle Fire will come equipped with an improved screen, a move that Apple recently made with its Retina display-enabled iPad 3.
Third-party developers are being asked to prepare apps for a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, rather than the 1024 x 600 used on the present Fire.
Additionally, the next-gen design will likely come with a camera, a must have for all tech-savvy consumers, as photo-sharing platforms like Instagram and Scalado are snapped up by giants like Facebook and Nokia.
The Fire news comes following whispers of an iPad Mini, and the unveiling of the Google Nexus 7.

The new malware has infected over 100,000 devices so far.
Last week security researchers TrustGo discovered the MMarketPay.A Trojan, which can download paid apps and contents from China Mobile’s Mobile Market.
So far, the malware has been placed in nine different third part Android app markets in China. Experts are warning users to only download Android apps from trusted app stores and recommend having a security scanner installed on devices.
Once the Trojan is downloaded onto an Android device it can automatically place orders for paid content and apps without informing the user. It has also been reported that it can even fill in CAPTCHA’s.
TrustGo has published the malware’s repackaged application names along with the current list of infected app markets, the list can be found here.

The first release from Peter Molyneux’s new indie development studio 22 Cans will be released on August 22nd.
Eurogamer reports that Curiosity will get a simultaneous release on iOS, Android and PC.
A few more details about the game were also revealed. It will see up to 1m players collectively chiselling away at a cube formed of 60m smaller cubes with the aim of attempting to reach the mysterious prize hidden at the centre.
And in typical style, Molyneux isn’t shy about hyping up the suspense.
"[It is] is so valuable, and so life-changingly important,” he insisted. "It's so amazing I think it will appear on news reports. It's not a dead cat, by the way."
The game hit the headlines in June when Molyneux revealed that amongst its DLC options will be a Ł50,000 download available only once. That gets you a diamond chisel, which has 100,000 times the power of the player’s default tool.
"It's an insane amount of money," he said of the DLC. "This is not a money-making exercise; it is a test about the psychology of monetisation."
Curiosity is Molyneux’s first title since he quit both his own studio Lionhead and its owner Microsoft back in March.

Apple has been arguably more generous when it comes to software sneak peeks than it has been with hardware, but while dues-paying developers are given the go-ahead to download operating systems ahead of their release, consumers have had to sit tight until after each iteration hits GM status. Some internet entrepreneurs have taken it upon themselves to game Apple's system, however, which until recently appeared to have been loosely guarded, with third parties selling beta access for years without intervention. iOS 6 is shaping up to be the end of the line -- Apple has reportedly begun targeting businesses selling early access, citing copyright infringement and contacting hosting providers to shut down sales sites. The operations can be quite profitable, with income approaching six figures for iOS 6 alone, so it's likely that we'll see businesses open up shop under different domains in an attempt to continue to collect. Still, if you're running such an operation of you're own, it may be worth your while to peruse Apple's non-disclosure agreement in full -- a site shut down could be but the beginning of the company's actions to control OS releases, and prevent third parties from illegally capitalizing on Cupertino's creations.

There is now yet another way for you to buy Myst. You may already have Myst on your iPhone or iPad, but now you can get an iPad version of RealMyst, the 2000 remake of the adventure game that presents the world in realtime 3D.
The new mobile version uses a new interface designed for the platform. "Instead of trying to awkwardly shoehorn a computer mouse interface or game console controller into the new touch environment - we were driven to design a simple touch interface that anyone could use." said producer Karl Johnson in the announcement. "The resulting interface allows the player to explore a 3D world with the ease of 'exploring' a 2D document on the iPad."
RealMyst is on the App Store now for iPad 2 and 3, at a promotional price of $6.99. At an unspecified future date, it'll go up to a permanent $9.99 price point.

All games in Android-based system to offer form of free play
Ouya has launched an $950,000 Kickstarter campaign in a bid to urge consumers to back the hackable console.
The $99 android-based system, which plugs into the TV, is being backed by the likes of Xbox co-creator Ed Fries, Jawbone Jambox designer Yves Behar and VP of business development at IGN Julie Uhrman.
Games on the platform will all be required to offer some sort of free play, whether that be in the form of a demo or the free-to-play model.
The console is powered by a Tegra 3 Quad core processor, and features HDMI connection at 1080p HD, 8GB on-board flash and 1GB of RAM.
The controller will feature two analogue sticks, ten buttons and a touch screen, allowing developers to create both gesture controlled and more traditional titles.

A proposed $99 console built on Google's Android operating system has hit its $950,000 fund-raising target in just eight hours on crowd-funding site Kickstarter.
The campaign went live earlier today and has so far attracted around 8,000 financial pledges.
The Ouya console – which carries a proposed release date of March 2013 – will run free-to-play software that any developer is free to upload. Furthermore, buyers will be provided with software that enables the 'hacking' of the console.
Backers include former Xbox exec Ed Fries and One Laptop Per Child designer Yves Behar.
UPDATE: Shortly after publication Ouya had attracted $1,015,652 with a total of 8,155 backers.

The user interface middleware will be available for mobile game development
[h=3]Autodesk[/h]Autodesk, Inc., is the world's leading supplier of advanced 2D and 3D design, digital content creation,...
www.autodesk.com
Autodesk announced today that its Scaleform UI middleware is being extended to mobile game development. New versions of the middleware will offer an Adobe Flash-based gaming and application platform, as well as a new Unity game engine plug-in.
There are three methods in all to develop mobile games and apps with the new releases of Scaleform. One leverages the Unity Game Engine and enables Unity developers to create triple-A quality game UI and menu screens using Flash. A second is the Scaleform software development kit (SDK), which can be easily integrated into a variety of third-party and proprietary mobile engines. And the third is a Standalone Development Platform, using Scaleform middleware's cross-platform, optimized Flash playback capabilities.
"These new versions of Scaleform were created to address growing interest from outside of the triple-A games market. Inspired by innovative use cases of the technology, we first expanded the middleware's mobile game toolsets and tutorials, and are now making Scaleform accessible to more developers," said Marc Petit, Autodesk senior vice president, Media & Entertainment.

As promised way back in late-June at I/O, Google+ now has has its very own fully iPad-supported app. Available now via iTunes, the app offers up some tablet-centric features, like the ability to drag posts from your stream for sharing, streaming Hangouts to a TV via AirPlay and expanding posts with a pinch to add comments. The updated Google+ iPhone app, meanwhile, lets users create and manage Google+ Events. The app can be downloaded now in the source link below.

Apple is about to complete an important part of the puzzle for the new iPad's world rollout: it just confirmed that its Retina display-packing tablet will reach mainland China on July 20th. The company isn't specific about local pricing, but it's promising both WiFi and cellular versions at its own stores and through resellers. The company is keen to avoid some of the mobs and scalping it's seen in the past and will open reservations for pickup starting on July 19th -- although the company is unusually limiting the reservation window to just three hours each day, between 9AM and noon. No matter how it shakes out, the official Chinese expansion is likely to keep the number of slingshot-delivered imports to a minimum.
Update: As some commenters have noted, the Chinese launch is helped mostly by the truce with Proview. The current iPad design has been certified since March; Apple isn't about to mention Proview by name in the release, but it likely wasn't keen on risking another store ban when it could just avoid the battle altogether.

Android Open Source Project technical lead Jean-Baptiste Queru has announced the source for the newest version of the OS, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (relive the releases for ICS, Gingerbread and Froyo), will be made available today. Currently, binaries are available for the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus, with Nexus S and Motorola Xoom versions promised soon. As usual, this gets the countdown started for more manufacturers to work on builds for their devices and means third party coders like CyanogenMod can dive in as well. One other thing we should be used to by now is a warning that it still may take some time for things to go live as the code is replicated. Hit the source link for all of the information on the latest build or hit the AOSP site for more information what exactly this is and how to get it.

Market share is as high as 84 per cent in Spain.
Android has, for the first time, taken at least half of all smartphone sales across Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and the US.
The sales were recorded over the last 12 weeks that ended June 10.
In Australia, 56.9 per cent of smartphone sales were of Android devices, while in Spain, that figure was a huge 84.1 per cent.
The data published by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says that the figures are largely driven by first-time smartphone buyers flocking to Android because of the platform's accessibility and relative affordability of devices.
Dominic Sunnebo, consumer insight director, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “We are seeing much of the Android sales growth being driven by consumers trading up from feature phones to smartphones. Android handsets currently offer an easier platform to enable these consumers to upgrade, as many first time smartphone consumers state ‘price of handset’ and ‘multimedia capabilities’ as their main reason for choosing an Android device.

Gets the all clear following trademark battle over the 'iPad' name.
Apple has received the green light to launch the new iPad in China, four months after it was revealed to the rest of the world.
It follows a $60m lawsuit with Chinese firm Proview Technology, which retained the rights to the 'iPad' name in its home country when Apple originally sought ownership of the trademark in 2009.
But now, the Retina display-enabled quad-core device will hit the world's largest mobile phone market on Friday, July 20th.
It's a move that will likely reinvigorate sales, given that the Chinese love Apple products.
Beijing-based shoppers went feral when the iPhone 4S was released in January, taking to streets to riot and egg stores when Apple staff refused to sell the phones for fear of overcrowding.

Android coders can make modifications to OS for Nexus devices.
Google unveiled its new Jelly Bean Android update last month. This prompted Carphone Warehouse to claim the OS would be anexclusive Nexus 7 property until November, which isn't entirely true.
Jean-Baptiste Queru, Android software engineer at Google, saysJelly Bean binaries are now available for third party developers, allowing them to modify apps and the like for Nexus devices.
This will immediately include the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus, while code for the Nexus S and Xoom is set to tie in with Jelly Bean's 'consumer release' in the next couple of weeks.
Improvements have been made to the OS around voice search, keyboard UI, Android Beam and more.

The new Apple TV slated for release at the end of the year is rumoured to be controlled by a new ultra-thin iPad mini.
A source in Asia has reportedly told SmartHouse that the new tablet device will be half the size of the regular iPad and will allow users to access TV programs, music and movies through a number of included applications, as well as manage their own content.
It will also incorporate Apple's app store, meaning users will be able to use the device to watch videos and play games, as well as read their favourite books and publications.
Described as wafer thin, the device was recently rumoured to measure in at just 7.2mm by Japanese blog Macotakara - making the device slimmer than both Amazon's Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7 tablets.

Glyn Moody writes at The H that Google's Nexus 7 tablet seems to be in a good position to shake up the market and pave the way for serious Android competition to the iPad. That said, he's worried about the potential downsides to a market full of mostly 'open' devices: 'Such customised systems are likely to be as locked down as they can be – the last thing either manufacturers or companies want is for users to start fiddling with the settings or installing their own software. As a result, the apps that run on such systems are likely to be closed source, since that's the way vertical markets tend to work. Such systems will also expose a persistent problem with the open source development methodology. While big and general projects find it relatively easy to attract interested developers, smaller, more targeted solutions tend not to thrive as free software.'

For the first time ever, Android has accounted for over half of the overall smartphone sales in key global markets over a 12 week period.
Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says that Android’s OS accounted for over 50 per cent of the sector in Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, US and Australia.
In some regions the win was by an even greater margin – in Spain it claimed 84.1 per cent, in Germany it was 68.5 per cent and in Britain 57.2 per cent.
“We are seeing much of the Android sales growth being driven by consumers trading up from feature phones to smartphones,” Kantar’s consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo stated.
“Android handsets currently offer an easier platform to enable these consumers to upgrade, as many first time smartphone consumers state ‘price of handset’ and ‘multimedia capabilities’ as their main reason for choosing an Android device.
“Our data shows that Android has a higher share of those consumers spending under Ł50 on buying their handset across the vast majority of countries we cover.
“Smartphone consumers are much more loyal to their brand of handset and carrier than feature phone consumers, highlighting the importance of capturing feature phone owners when they are starting to look to change their handset.
“It’s also interesting to note that although Android’s share is high in the USA market, it has decreased by 6.8% points over the year. This trend contrasts Apple’s growth, which is a reflection of a successful iPhone 4S release and the first time availability of the iPhone 4 and 4S on Sprint.”

Slide over, Twitter -- after this fall, you won't be the only social network in town with OS-level integration on the iPod touch, iPad and iPhone. As announced back at WWDC in June, Facebook will be on a level playing fieldwith the launch of iOS 6, and the outfit's new SDK 3.0 Beta is exactly what developers need to get there. Among other things, the new code promises superior user session management, ready-to-use native UI views, bolstered Facebook API support and an iOS Developer Center to get folks grounded on "key concepts." After iOS 6 launches en masse, this SDK will "automatically use the native Facebook Login in iOS 6 when available," providing a similar experience to Twitter in terms of seamless logins. Console newcomer Ouya is possibly just hours away from passing the $4,000,000 funding mark on Kickstarter.
At the time of writing the project has attracted $3,934,714 in pledges from 30,542 backers.
Interestingly, in the process of writing this story (which took about 15 minutes) the project attracted 54 backers contributing $66,595 between them. That equates to an average of $1,233 each.
Those who back the project to the tune of $10 or more are promised the chance to reserve their Ouya username ahead of the machine’s launch in 2013. Pledge $25 and you’ll get a Founder Emblem permanently attached to your user name.
Step up to $95 and you’ll get a free console and controller when the console finally arrives, subject to availability. $99 will guarantee you a pre-launch machine.
$225 gets a console and two controllers with your name etched on them while the $699 offer is more developer focused with early SDK access and free promotion of any game uploaded to the service for one year.
$1,337 adds a direct email hotline the console’s developers and an invite to the launch party and for $5,000 you’ll get a free day trip to San Francisco to hang out with creator Yves Behar.
The top tier of $10,000 will see your username and backer number engraved onto the entire first production run of the machine.

Industry veteran Mark Friedler sees the console business being "unleashed and democratized"
A freight train plowed into the console games business on July 11th, forever changing the console games landscape, unleashing user democracy and elevating Kickstarter to the new kingmaker of the games business. Of course, I'm talking about Yves Behar'sOuya Android-powered game console which has raised over $4 million in the first 48 hours.
I was blown away by the conversation with Behar during the GamesBeat/MobileBeat conference in San Francisco where he said the game console will be rebooted.
I believe this announcement will go down in history as something as big as the launch of the iPhone five years ago. The amazing outpouring of 25,000 pre-orders of the console in 24 hours shows gamers want the TV experience to be democratized.

I spoke with Brian Fargo of InXile (who raised $900,000 for Wasteland 2 on Kickstarter in March) and he believes customers are frustrated with traditional game publishers and are demanding more creative products instead of the endless sequels released by the leaders. In 48 hours, the console business has been turned on its head by a sub $100 open console whose mission is to make games less expensive and free to play. It is the Apple 1984 commercial equivalent to the games business () - their revolutionary sounding Kickstarter description is below.
"The immediate loser in this battle will be Nintendo that has failed to create a meaningful online business"
Mark Friedler
Let's open this sucker up! It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen. Let's make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy. With all our technological advancements, shouldn't costs be going down? Gaming could be cheaper!
We're handing the reins over to the developer with only one condition: at least some gameplay has to be free. We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town, and many others. Developers can offer a free demo with a full-game upgrade, in-game items or powers, or ask you to subscribe.
The Ouya can be seen as a descendant of the Sega Dreamcast and much malignedPhantom console whose vision of a download only game console was debuted at E3 in 2004 - I was a member of the advisory board of the company whose vision was accurate to where the industry was going but failed to execute on delivering the product.
Ouya has taken advantage of the perfect storm of excellent design, a stable and free Android OS, a shift of developers from console to mobile and tablet development and the winning business model of freemium and free-to-play gaming.

Smaller iOS developers fear being pushed out of a crowded market
At a panel at VentureBeat's GamesBeat 2012 moderated by GamesIndustry International's Steve Peterson, iOS developers shared their woes in marketing their games in a crowded app store. User acquisition costs are rising to the point that many free-to-play titles will spend more on marketing than they'll make in lifetime revenue. The panel was attended by SkyVu Entertainment founder Ben Vu, Machine Zone chief executive officer Gabe Leydon, mobile consultant A.J. Yeakel, and W3i cofounder Rob Weber.
Vu explained that cross-promoting other developers' games via services like Chartboost was his primary method of reaching users, but the rising costs are a big problem.
"This mismatch is insane," Vu said. "You have to pay attention to this, down to the hour or the minute."
Leydon cited costs as high as $7 for acquiring users, up from 50 cents a year ago. He sees a number of "billionaries" coming into the market with large brands to sell, with Asian mobile developers close behind. Weber backed up Leydon's claims, explaining that it's difficult to find the top-end of user acquisition costs.
"The pressure on prices will shoot upward and not slow down until more ad inventory comes online," Leydon said. "There's billionaires in the market who want to win. They are willing to spend $7 a download. This is going to be a long, tough fight."
"You can't predict how the bigger companies will spend," said Weber. "But it's about finding the right volume and the right level of profitability for a game and doing it on a large scale. It's a huge, full-time job."
Great content pushes games through word-of-mouth, but social networks like Twitter and Facebook also helps keep acquisition costs lower according to Leydon. Vu said he was also looking to improve the branding on his Battle Bears game by licensing the IP for a possible toyline and television show.
"We are working on the core product and the core brand and making it freakin' awesome," Vu said.
While Apple App Store is the most lucrative mobile market, that is beginning to come with its own set of issues, many of which don't exist on the Android-based Google Play Store and Amazon AppStore. Microsoft will also be entering the race with its Windows Store this morning. Unfortunately, on the Apple App Store itself, there seems to be no cure-all in sight.
"That's just more things to worry about," Vu said. "I'm pulling my hair out."

Remember that tall, mostly aluminum 2012 iPhone shell that appeared to have leaked? It's back. This time, KitGuru has unearthed what it claims is a "test sample" with the glass front panel roughly intact. We've seen the darker steel sides, aluminum back and new dock connector before, but the front gives us a much better sense of how the finished product (if real) will turn out. Sitting next to an iPhone 4S, it's suggested that the new model would stuff in that bigger screen more through a better use of the available area -- there's much less blank space than on the iPhones we've known since 2007. While we still don't know for sure if the design shown here is close to what will go hand-in-hand with iOS 6 in the fall, we're starting to see enough smoke that there's bound to be a fire nearby.

An anonymous reader tips news that a Russian developer has posted a video showing how in-app purchases for some iOS software can be acquired without payment. The hack does't require the device to be jailbroken, and can be accomplished even by users who aren't technically proficient. The method involves three steps: "The installation of CA certificate, the installation of in-appstore.com certificate, and the changing of DNS record in Wi-Fi settings. After the quick process, users are presented with the message pictured above when installing in-app purchases, opposed to Apple’s usual purchase confirmation dialog." 9to5mac notes that this doesn't affect all apps, since some of them make use of Apple's method for validating receipts.

Probably dribbling over topless footage of Ryan Gosling.
New data from mobile video service Vuclip shows that 78 per cent of US women reckon they're spending more and more time viewing mobile content.
In fact, 55 per cent spend more than 30 minutes a day viewing mobile videos, while 60 per cent use the tech primarily for entertainment.
Specifically, 50 per cent are watching movie clips, the most popular form of content ahead of news, sports and celebrity gossip.
Judith Coley, VP of marketing, Vuclip, said: "Today's woman is busy, engaged and full of life. She wants to make the most of every moment and when she takes a break, she's increasingly turning to her mobile phone for entertainment."
In comparison, 70 per cent of men turn to entertainment, with movies and sports at the top of the mind.

New submitter TheUni writes with news that XBMC has been announced for Android. Quoting:"Not a remote, not a thin client; the real deal. No root or jailbreak required. XBMC can be launched as an application on your set-top-box, tablet, phone, or wherever else Android may be found. The feature-set on Android is the same that you have come to expect from XBMC, no different from its cousin on the desktop. Running your favorite media-center software on small, cheap, embedded hardware is about to become a hassle-free reality. And as Android-based set-top-boxes are becoming more and more ubiquitous, it couldn't be a better time. ... We will begin releasing apks for interested beta testers in the coming weeks. But for those who are up to the task, as you would expect from XBMC, the source code is available. We have decided not to push to Google Play until we are satisfied that users with all kinds of devices get the same great XBMC experience."

So you need to debug a circuit and you don’t have an oscilloscope. That’s not a problem thanks to [retronics] $0 Android oscilloscope, made with parts he just happened to have lying around.
The heart of every modern oscilloscope is the ADC – the chip that takes analog input and outputs a digital signal. Every Android device has one of these converters connected to the microphone port. All [retronics] needed to do was solder up a 3mm headphone jack, wire in a few resistors, and attach a pair of alligator clips. After installing an oscilloscope app, [retronics] had a half decent ‘scope.
Yes, this is truly a poor man’s oscilloscope, and [retronics] probably won’t be debugging high frequency RF circuits with his Android microphone jack anytime soon. Low frequency stuff such as audio is where this ‘scope really excels; even more so if a small preamp is thrown into the mix.
You can check out [retronics]‘ build after the break. Sure, it’s not something for precise and calibrated measurement, but sometimes you only need a tool that will do the job.

Veteran journalist Chris Morris tackles the major reasons why Ouya could be a revolution or a mere footnote
Any time a start-up makes $4.5 million in four days through crowdsourcing, it's bound to raise a few eyebrows. And Ouya has certainly done that.
Enthusiasts are dreaming of a dark horse console that will bring gaming back to its roots, ending the cycle of sequel-itis and injecting some fresh new game mechanics into the industry. Skeptics, meanwhile, say those Kickstarter supporters could be throwing their money away on a product that will never find a significant audience.
Ironically, they could both be right.
Ouya will be a case study in marketing and PR in the years to come. The campaign has been orchestrated to perfection, with opinion maker- and mass media coverage of the system hitting the day the Kickstarter launched. It preached to the choir on Reddit. And it had a number of respected industry names lending their support (though some a bit less enthusiastically than it initially appeared).
It's a system that currently straddles the lines of potential greatness and historical footnote. And which way it will go is anyone's guess. Here are a few arguments for both sides:
Why Ouya could work
Magical price point: Price matters - especially when it comes to gaming systems. (Don't believe me? Ask Nintendo to tell you the story of the 3DS.) And when it comes to the sweet spot with consumers, you can't do much better than $99.
"Wii U hasn't energized the base yet... Ouya's plans to launch in the first quarter of 2013 give it a pretty clear field for at least six months"
Sub-$100 is a level where the mainstream is willing to take a chance, even if a system is unproven. If Ouya can hit its goal of a $99 console - especially one with a robust series of offerings (including the standard Netflix, Hulu, etc. applications), it could rope in people from the mainstream world, which would go a long way to achieving sustainability.
Indie love: Independent game makers rarely seek the spotlight, but that doesn't mean they don't want their work to be recognized. Ouya might be a perfect showcase for their games - and there's a growing contingent of gamers who are eager to check those titles out.
Indie games are typically niche products - and would never stand a chance when pitted against major franchises. There have, of course, been exceptions (and Ouya's eager to get them on board), but you don't have to look too far beyond Xbox Live sales numbers to see that most smaller games don't make a mint.

Few projects have seized the Kickstarter zeitgeist as effectively as Ouya - but it's destined to disappoint
This time last week, nobody had heard of Ouya; we might have guessed that it was an approximation of the sound of a polite grandmother dropping a hammer on her toe, or the carnal grunt of an Old Etonian. Seven days later, it's soared past its funding target on Kickstarter and has become one of the hottest topics in the industry. Yet it's been fascinating to speak to a variety of different people about the proposed console and gauge the reasons for their support, because doing so has revealed vast fractures in terms of what people actually expect from this console.
For most - especially those at the lower end of the pledging scale, I expect - their support is a reflection of pent-up demand for a smart TV device. An all-digital console with the same development philosophy as mobile and tablet games is seen as filling the gap which has been created, conspicuously, by years of talking about a Google, Apple or even Valve led Smart TV revolution which has thus far failed to materialise. Ouya hitches a lift on a variety of related trends in a pretty overt way - the rise of indie (and of the superstar indie developer - witness the quotes from the likes of Mojang and Jenova Chen on the Kickstarter page), the rise of crowdfunding, the sense of inevitability about mobile and tablet gaming making an impact on the TV screen.
"Ouya hitches a lift on a variety of related trends - the rise of indie, the rise of crowdfunding, the sense of inevitability about mobile and tablets making an impact on the TV screen"
Then there's the controller - a conventional joypad. No touch screen, no movement controls. Among the traditional gamers who have voiced hatred of such things for years, not a dry eye in the house. Could it be? Could this be the device that's going to reclaim these brave new worlds of gaming - F2P, mobile, tablet, digital - from the hordes of arm-waving, song-singing, touchscreen-molesting not-proper-gamers who have infested them? Shut up and take my money!
If you're detecting a hint of cynicism here - well, I think that's natural. Here we have a device which clambers atop a rickety tower of trends and waves its arms for attention. Think about it - it's an open platform, for indie developers, crowdfunded, all-digital, "disruptive" (maybe), hacker-friendly, free-to-play... It's painfully hip, like a console built after a brainstorming session consisting exclusively of words cut out from the headlines of Boing Boing posts. This console wears heavy non-prescription glasses and patterned cardigans, has a dreadful beard, drinks chai lattes outside pop-up cafes in Shoreditch and listens to the latest unreleased music demos on an old tape walkman "ironically". It couldn't have been more guaranteed the Kickstarter success it has ultimately achieved.
I don't begrudge it that. It has played to a crowd beautifully - perhaps even unconsciously - and indeed, it's a thing of beauty in many ways. Like the trends which have birthed it, the Ouya is a lovely idea. Cheap, open, hackable, filled with content from talented indie developers. It's a beautiful idea and in fact, it has the potential to become a beautiful little community - a creative incubator filled with new ideas being tested and trialled, welcoming fledgling developers to dip in and show what they can do, while giving more established developers a platform on which to trial new ideas. (Of course, PC advocates might point out that Windows and indeed OSX have been doing exactly that for years, but while there's substance to that argument, the point remains that console gaming and hence console development is intrinsically more attractive for some players, so there is theoretically room for an "open console" of sorts.)
The real problem is one of expectation. Ouya's creators asked for $950,000 and at the time that I'm writing this, they're hovering around the $4 million mark. Exceeding their target by such a margin has created immense excitement around the platform, and that's led to a lot of the fractures in terms of expectation that I alluded to earlier. Some people (outspoken Android advocates, mostly, which can't be an easy position to take and thus deserves our sympathy) view this as a final piece of the puzzle for Android, completing a platform comprising mobile, tablet and now console offerings and thus ushering in an era of dominance for their chosen OS. Others, more sanely but equally questionably, view it as a full-scale introduction of F2P mechanisms to the console space which will prove disruptive to the console business at large.
"What we've seen so far is a sliver of a fraction of a niche, not a workable market and not an indication of guaranteed success"
Those two are marginal viewpoints, certainly - but they can be found easily enough within many discussions around Ouya this week. Much more common is the viewpoint that this has just become a major battleground between "open" and "closed". Consoles are, unquestionably, "closed" - it's insanely expensive to develop a title for the Xbox 360 or the PS3 and you need permission from a platform holder, probably via an equally restrictive publisher, to do so. At the other end of the spectrum, Ouya is open; buy one, build something, release it. (In the middle, you get all manner of things being labelled "open" or "closed" based on rhetorical convenience rather than any truly useful definition - witness iOS and WP7 being labelled "closed" despite occupying a space at the "open" end of the spectrum so close to Android's own policies that most consumers couldn't make a meaningful distinction between them.)
So poor Ouya, now, is going to be a stalking horse for the hopes and dreams of the "open" crowd. This beautiful, well-intentioned, achingly hip piece of technology is going to go out into the world with the expectation of actually winning over a meaningful audience of consumers who will knowingly choose an "open" platform over the "closed" ones currently on offer - who will buy into the Ouya vision of a future where entertainment exists without gatekeepers or curators.
Let's put this in a little bit of perspective. First, hard numbers. Ouya, as I write, has raised $4 million from around 31,000 people. That's a big number of consumers to some people. If I wrote a book on Kindle and sold it to 31,000 people for a fiver each, I'd be very happy. For a console with an F2P business model, though, it's barely even a test market, let alone a viable consumer base. Remember that even the most successful console games rarely sell to 10% of the console installed base (misfits like Wii Fit aside) - even if we assume that F2P ensures a wider group will sample the game, remember that only around 1 in 20 people who play F2P games actually pay (the figures fluctuate and are tough to pin down, but that's not a bad ballpark). Now, Ouya will hopefully sell to a lot more than the 31,000 people who backed it, but the point remains - what we've seen so far is a sliver of a fraction of a niche, not a workable market and not an indication of guaranteed success.
Secondly, a brief exploration of why consumers buy consoles. One word - games. Consumers buy consoles because those consoles have games they want to play. A handful buy consoles due to platform loyalty, and go on to make a lot of noise about them on the internet, but they're not an important market overall (even Nintendo's consoles sell, ultimately, because of Nintendo's games, not because of the Nintendo name itself). I doubt that any human being in history has ever walked into a games store and bought a console because they like the market philosophy behind it ("an Xbox 360 and a copy of Atlas Shrugged if you would please, shopkeep!"), although if someone has, I'm sure they'll pop up in the comments below to prove both my wrongness and their own loneliness in the world. On mobile, a handful of noisy Internet types choose Android specifically because of the open/closed debate, but again, they're not a particularly important market segment - one of Android's greatest problems is that most people who choose Android phones do so simply because they're cheap, and go on to spend no money whatsoever in the Google Play store.
"Those creating huge expectations for the console are going to be disappointed; the internet opinion machine will take that disappointment and turn it into failure"
This is the reality facing Ouya. You convince consumers to buy a console by having top-flight software available for it. You convince developers to create top-flight software by either paying them (first party), or by convincing them that there are going to be tons of consumers around to buy their software at launch. The way you achieve the latter is by injecting enormous amounts of money into both first party software and launch marketing. Ouya, which is launching a console on a budget less than that of most console software releases, let alone hardware launches, cannot afford to do that - and all the Boing Boing posts and Kickstarter magic dust in the world doesn't change that.
To me, the saddest thing about this situation is that Ouya is brilliant. It's a great idea, and I think it's going to do something really interesting in terms of creating a community that's very small, very rough and tumble but utterly buzzing with creativity. I've backed it (not least because in a week when people seem to have decided that throwing money at an existing, profitable publication through Kickstarter is a reasonable use of the site, giving some money to an actually innovative, creative project seemed like the best riposte) and I'll buy one, and I'm intrigued to see what comes of it. But it's sad, because Ouya is going to be judged a failure. Those creating huge expectations for the console are going to be disappointed; the internet opinion machine will take that disappointment and turn it into failure. Ouya will do some great stuff, but it's not going to disrupt the console business (which is already pretty disrupted already) or initiate a revolution against closed platforms. I fear that the hype will make it impossible to enjoy the platform for what it is - an idea that's simply too lovely to survive in the real world.

Verizon Wireless has launched Exent's GameTanium, an exclusive subscription service for Android-powered devices on Verizon's network. The service will provide 100 smartphone titles and 50 tablet-enabled games, including Fruit Ninja and World of Goo, for a $5.99 fee per month.

The creator of the Pandora explains why the Ouya could fall on its face
As the Ouya Kickstarter passes $4.2 million, people are beginning to express doubts about how revolutionary the console will truly be. Pandora co-founder Craig Rothwell has dealt with a launch when his team released their portable in 2010, four years after the initial announcement. Rothwell casts doubt on whether Ouya's creators can hit their ambitious targets.
"You simply cannot make a quality console and controller for $99, no matter how low you go in China," Rothwell told PocketGamer UK. "Even a Chinese semi-slave production line won't hit $99 at that spec, as the big name parts they are talking about are a set cost. "
"My feelings are that at that price - and remember you have to take off the Kickstarter fees, which brings the console and touchpad-equipped controller in at less than $99 - they will be making a loss on each unit sold."
The Pandora ran into a ton of delays before finally launching and Rothwell believes the same could happen to the Ouya if their numbers aren't solid.
"We worked out all costs and had quotes which we went public with, and even then everything which could go wrong did go wrong. We survived by the skin of our teeth and via some very, very kind customers and developers," said Rothwell.
"Now we have been though that baptism of fire, and know everything that is involved, it's clear that a race to the lowest possible price isn't how you succeed. That's generally how things can go majorly wrong; when trying to come to market with a rock bottom price, one error, one contractor messing up, and it's curtains," he added.
"Because Ouya is already being sold at that rock bottom price before going to production, there is no way for them to adjust for error. I hope they have a big secret pile of cash they can call on if they need it."
Rothwell expects the Ouya team to turn to alternate methods other than console sales to pull in revenue. He also wonders if developers will want to create games for another fork of Android with a small userbase.
"My guess is that you will have to pay some kind of subscription to use the console, and that is where they plan to claw back some money," he began. "What's the point in doing all that work for their comparatively tiny audience when you can get a better deal releasing on iOS or 'normal' Android via Google's popular Play Store?"
"When all the hype dies down, this machine could well be DOA, and Ouya could be looking at a giant black hole of losses."

We've certainly delved into Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's new features, but Google itself is just now giving us a full exploration of its update's sugar-laden heart through an official changelog. While Google Now, the updated camera app and other core components easily get their due, the checklist also has a decidedly more buttery feel than one would think -- key individual apps like Calendar now have more elegant transitions to go with the leaps and bounds in Android's overall speed. The breakdown even goes into corners that Google scarcely illuminated during the Google I/O keynote, such as accessibility and the finer nuances of the new keyboard. If you're the sort whose Jelly Bean fever has you checking for thatGalaxy Nexus upgrade so often that you're nearly punching a hole in the screen, Google has your (no doubt temporary) placebo.

While Apple is content to keep the price of its iPad range reasonably high, the open nature of Google's Android operating system has resulted in a deluge of low-cost slates from the technological sweat shops of the Far East. It would be easy to dismiss such devices as cheap and nasty, but with many selling for less than your average pay-as-you-go mobile phone, this is surely a sector of the market which demands further investigation. Three weeks ago, pricing reached a new all-time low: a capacitive screen tablet, running Android 4.0, was available for just Ł50 - and we just had to find out what kind of experience you got for the money.Shopping in this area is a minefield, largely due to the anonymous nature of the products themselves; it's not uncommon to find the exact same tablet branded with several different monikers and retailed by multiple distributors - just like the Scroll Extreme slate we reviewed back in April. However, in general, most of the 7-inch variants tend to share a common bond in the fact that they utilise the ARM-based "AllWinner" chipset, a low-cost alternative to the more expensive offerings from the likes of NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Our test model was no different. Our tablet is known as the NATPC M009S RTB - although it comes in generic box with generic instructions, and features no branding whatsoever - and it's available from Amazon supplier Wendy Lou, who supplied us with a review unit. Other variants - each with slightly different specifications - exist at higher RRPs, and it may pay to shop around. The review unit that actually turned up is closer to the Ł70 model. This is identical to what was then the Ł50 offering, with the additional bonus of a 25 per cent larger battery, more RAM and HDMI output. However, the CPU runs with lower clocks.Clearly the market value of these tablets is influenced by the ebb and flow of production, with specs seemingly changing with the tides. The price of the base model has risen since we received our review unit, but keep a look out on the bargain forums and they'll be sure to drop again.

Claims to have developed practical use for much vaunted tech.
While visible light data transmission has been available for some time, there hasn't yet been a widespread real world use for it.
Japanese firm Outstanding Technology is aiming to change that with the Commulight system, which uses visible light communications to send info to smartphones and tablets via a receiver.
The device can be plugged in using a USB or (as many gadgets do not have full-size sockets) there's another version that plugs into the 3.5mm jack.
Both operate in the same way, however; collecting information from an overhead data-transmitting LED.
Outstanding Technology thinks Commulight is ideal for guiding users around galleries and museums, offering new information at each exhibit.

Steam's Android app has added a selection of new non-gaming categories, according to Engadget.
There are ten additional categories, all of which are currently empty.
The new categories include Accounting, Animation & Modelling and Design & Illustration.
Having just released the beta of Source Filmmaker it seems likely that Valve could move into distributing illustration and animation software. Valve already offers books and movies through its online store, so what's to stop Steam becoming a real App Store contender and releasing content for pretty much everything?
With Valve already allowing its community to vote which games it should distribute through Steam Greenlight, consumer may get a say in what other kinds of apps they would like to purchase through the site.
Steam's summer sale began last week and runs until July 22nd. Many fans are hoping that Valve's generous discounts will eventually extend to software…95 per cent off Photoshop perhaps? That would be lovely.

First major work-around of in-app purchasing system sees over 30,000 purchases made for free.
9to5mac first revealed that Russian hacker Alexey V. Borodin created an online service called In-Appstore.com to facilitate free transitions. The system isn't strictly speaking a hack, but a method for bypassing Apple’s authentication servers.
It works by re-directing requests to Borodin’s service, which then fools the app into thinking that it has ‘purchased’ the content by delivering back a single legitimate purchase receipt, which was donated by Borodin himself.
This makes the breach pretty insidious because it cannot be prevented by simply validating App Store receipts.
There are two possible fixes for Apple: making each purchase receipt unique using a securely encrypted receipt, or ensuring that the verification process is talking directly to Apple and not some third party server.
Apparently Borodin has now ceded control of his site to a third party to avoid further trouble.

Google-powered device owners now able to make calls and play audio via Bluetooth when driving.
Traditionally, in-car entertainment (ICE) manufacturers power their services with Linux or Windows.
But that's all change, as UK-based product innovator Plextek integrates the Android OS into its series of head-units.
This is set to offer seamless connectivity with those running on Google-based smartphones and tablets, allowing wireless calls, data access and audio playback while driving.
However, Plextek found the 30 second plus load time of an Android device posed a threat to the drain of a vehicle's battery, which was overcome by re-ordering loading tasks, and minimising standby times.
Nicholas Hill, project manager, Plextek, said: "Android is the most popular mobile OS in the world, and with so much talk about the ‘connected car’ many of its features are ideally suited for automotive applications.

BlackBerry maker hits back at reports that app makers are deserting the platform.
RIM's next-gen OS BlackBerry 10 reeks of false starts. It was forced to unceremoniously ditch the BBX name following a trademark battle, while the platform remains something of a myth due to continued delays.
And last week, Baird Equity Research stirred the pot by reporting developers are losing faith in BB10.
The negative press prompted RIM's head of developer relations Alec Saunders to slay the claims in a blog.
He says he was "shocked by the findings" because the numbers don't correlate with what RIM is seeing and hearing in the real world from its developer community.
"I have been receiving a lot of feedback from developers personally and I can tell you that I am hearing again and again that [almost 5,000] developers are amazed by how easy it is to work with the BlackBerry 10 tools," he said.

Kantar data shows that Android took 57.2 per cent of the smartphone market in the UK during a 12 week sampling period.
The latest data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that Android's share ranges from 49.6 per cent to 84.1 per cent in various countries around the world.
Android beat iOS, RIM and all other smartphone Operating Systems in every country that featured in the sampling period, which spanned 12 weeks ending on June 10th 2012. it took at least half of smartphone sales in Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, US and Australia.
Android saw an increase in market share in every country, apart from the US, compared to the same period in 2011. Although there was a decrease, Android still beat Apple's iOS to the top spot with 50.2 per cent of the market.
Dominic Sunnebo, consumer insight director, explains: “We are seeing much of the Android sales growth being driven by consumers trading up from feature phones to smartphones. Android handsets currently offer an easier platform to enable these consumers to upgrade, as many first time smartphone consumers state ‘price of handset’ and ‘multimedia capabilities’ as their main reason for choosing an Android device.
"Our data shows that Android has a higher share of those consumers spending under Ł50 on buying their handset across the vast majority of countries we cover.”
The time of the sampling period meant that the report captured some of the Samsung Galaxy S3 surge along with the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Y, both of which are aimed at first-time smartphone owners.
Although iOS was second in every country, Android's figures dwarfed Apple's OS market share.

Rumours claim latest Apple smartphone to feature 4-inch retina display with a 16:9 aspect ratio
Reports suggest the iPhone 5 could be with us within weeks.
knowyourmobile.com has reported that a 'reliable industry source' has revealed to the site that Apple will launch the iPhone 5 via a keynote speech on August 7th.
This comes after numerous reports from Asia that the new phone is already in production, with Japanese
blog Macotakara posting photos claiming to be the iPhone 5's back panel, showing it to be made up of both aluminium and glass.
It is widely reported that the iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch retina display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. If true, this will be 0.5-inches bigger than previous models.

Goes from $99 to $49 with a two year contract on AT&T.
The Finnish phone maker claims the drop is not unusual for a phone that is now over three months into its lifecycle. But inevitably, many will see this as a further indication of Nokia's failure to meet the challenge presented by rivals like iPhone, Galaxy S, HTC One et al.
As of April, Lumia has sold just over two million units since its launch last December.
The move comes a few days ahead of Nokia's 2Q results, which are expected to show more dramatic losses.
Last month, Nokia said it would cut 10,000 jobs to reduce costs and address its dwindling revenues. This followed a 1Q loss of €1.34 billion operating loss.

Developers of iOS apps have been blessed with another update to iOS 6 around 21 days after an update of the iOS 5 successor was doled out and it contains quite a few new features. The 3rd update, dubbed iOS 6 Beta 3, can now be applied to the existing iOS on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and full downloads are available from Apple's developer portal. MacRumours notes that this update doesn't come with any change list and developers seeing the over the air update get the message that iOS 6 Beta 3 contains some 'bug fixes and improvement.' The latest build contains new options under the Settings application for Apple's latest Maps software. The beta allows developers to customize certain aspects like the volume of turn-by-turn navigation, and whether to measure distances in miles or kilometers, notes Apple Insider."

The folks behind Ouya got millions of dollars, courtesy of a slew of very kind folks on Kickstarter -- and now the hard part begins: actually bringing a product to market. Thankfully, it's not wasting any time. In a note posted to its Kickstarter page, the team let it be know that it's working with NVIDIA on the project, meeting with the chipmaker on Thursday to "maximize the performance" of the Tegra 3 it'll be packing. Ouya may also help game developers get a jumpstart on the action, noting that it "might consider" a reward to let devs get early access to the raw circuit board and software.

New service allows iOS users to bypass Apple servers for premium content, reports huge popularity in first 24 hours
A Russian hacker has launched a service that allows users to access premium iOS content for free.
According to a report on Ars Technica, the service re-directs payment requests for in-app purchases away from Apple's servers to one operated by the hacker, Alexey V. Borodin, with no need for jail-breaking.
Ars Technica notes that use of the service grants Borodin access to Apple IDs, passwords and other sensitive data, though the hacker responded that he doesn't use, log or monitor that information.
Borodin claims that the service hosted more than 400,000 transactions in the 24 hours following the launch of In-Appstore.com, and the security crackdown appears to have started already. In its first day, two IP addresses used by the replacement DNS server were blocked, though Borodin claims to be unsure whether Apple is responsible.

And if it's thinner, it could also be larger.
The Wall Street Journal has added to the iPhone 5 rumour mill by reporting that Apple is expected to use in-cell touch display technology for the new device.
Using in-cell will reduce the thickness of the device while ensuring it remains lightweight - perhaps paving the way for an increased screen size.
The technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, making it unnecessary to have a separate touch-screen layer. The absence of the layer, usually about half a millimetre thick, not only makes the whole screen thinner, but the quality of displayed images would improve.
For Apple, the new technology would also simplify the supply chain and help cut costs as it would no longer have to buy touch panels and LCD panels from separate suppliers.

It's a victory for Motorola as a German court has ruled that the Xoom tablet doesn't infringe on Apple's patented design for the iPad.
Apple filed the lawsuit last summer and requested that the Xoom be banned throughout the European Union.
This comes after a previous defeat for Apple in the courtroom earlier this month, in which it accused Motorola of a similar patent infringement in the US.
The Motorola Xoom has hardly made an impact on iPad sales since its launch last year, but this may have just been an attempt at payback after Motorola successfully sued Apple back in 2012 for alleged infringement on a range of wireless communication parts.

New submitter SternisheFan tips this quote from an article at Ars:"The latest release of Google's Android mobile operating system has finally been properly fortified with an industry-standard defense. It's designed to protect end users against hack attacks that install malware on handsets. In an analysis published Monday, security researcher Jon Oberheide said Android version 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, is the first version of the Google-developed OS to properly implement a protection known as address space layout randomization. ASLR, as it's more often referred to, randomizes the memory locations for the library, stack, heap, and most other OS data structures. As a result, hackers who exploit memory corruption bugs that inevitably crop up in complex pieces of code are unable to know in advance where their malicious payloads will be loaded. When combined with a separate defense known as data execution prevention, ASLR can effectively neutralize such attacks."

July 17th, 2012, 23:54 Posted By: wraggster
High-profile console startup Ouya has once again denied that it is seeking funding from venture capitalists in conjunction with its Kickstarter campaign.
This latest development comes almost precisely as Ouya prepares to pass the $5m funding goal on Kickstarter.
MCV reported yesterday that founder Julie Uhrman said in an interview with Develop that the company was “looking for additional funds of money but wanted to take it to Kickstarter regardless”.
These comments were then denied in a separate interview.
Now the company has issued a new statement that further outlines its position.
"Let me be clear, Ouya is not seeking additional funding outside of Kickstarter,” a statement from the company issued to MCV and Develop reads. “Our priority now is to continue to focus on building a great game console while engaging in our ongoing Kickstarter campaign.
"Our intent in going to Kickstarter was to raise money that would take us from functional prototype to product on the market."
"With respect to our funding, we have been candid in disclosing an early round raised through friends and family that included backing from investors like Digg founder Jay Adelson, Flixster founder Joe Greenstein, and Jawbone founder Hosain Rahman.
"We do not intend to engage in any conversations related to funding while we are on Kickstarter. And, it's not like we are going to start speed dialing VCs as soon as the Kickstarter campaign ends. Once our Kickstarter campaign closes funding our priority will be getting Ouya to market, and delivering the best game experience possible. Fundraising will not be top of the list.
"Unfortunately, I think this rumor sprung from a misunderstood answer during an interview and we are trying to contact the reporter to clarify."
The reporter in question is sitting just across the room from this author right now, with his dictaphone in hand. Ouya made successful contact regarding the issue last night. Having listened to the answer given it’s hard to understand from where the “misunderstanding” arose.
It becomes even harder to grasp when the PR representative sitting in on the interview chips in with “tell them about your conversations with venture capitalists”, although this could conceivably be referencing discussions that took place prior to Kickstarter funding.
UPDATE: Ouya has contacted MCV to say that the VC discussions mentioned did indeed take place prior to Ouya's listing on Kickstarter.

Anyone who's been scanning to see who gets what in iOS 6 has noticed that the iPhone 3GS is the red-headed stepchild of the family -- some features that really don't need a cutting-edge phone have been left on the chopping block. Apple is showing those owners some TLC, after all, by officially flicking on support for Shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail lists through the entire iOS 6-ready device list. With the exception of Safari's Offline Reading List, the only features now left out for iPhone 3GS owners are the ones you'd expect to be excluded from a 3-year-old phone, such as FaceTime, Siri and those 3D-heavy map flyovers. While the iPhone 4S is still the darling of the lot, 3GS owners can now cling to their agingveteran phones a little more securely for at least another year.

CEO responds to criticisms that crowd-funded console will be an open invitation to pirates
Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman has responded to criticisms that the crowd-funded Android-based console will be an open invitation too pirates.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Uhrman claimed that Ouya - which has been sold as an open, hackable platform - will be at least as secure as any existing Android device.
"In fact, because all the paid content will require authentication with Ouya's servers, we have an added layer of security," she said. "Hacking and openness are about getting what you want to do with the hardware. Rooting the device won't give you any more access to the software."
Ouya was brought to public attention through its Kickstarter campaign, which breezed past its $950,000 target in a matter of hours. Currently, the campaign has raised almost $5 million for the product's development, and there are still 22 days to go.
"We've raised enough to build a great product, just as we planned," Uhrman continued. "More certainly helps, though: the more we raise, the more we can create a great service for game developers, with better tools, and more gamers for them to reach with their games. More game developers means more, better games - and that's better for gamers."
However, the abundant interest in the concept hasn't prevented industry commentators finding fault, with both Rob Fahey and Chris Morris posting sceptical articles on GamesIndustry International.

Sega has announced details of the first premium DLC in Football Manager's history.
Introduced with the latest update for Football Manager Handheld 2012, the DLC comes in the form of two optional Challenges: 'Austerity Measures' and 'You Can't Win Anything With Kids'. The update is out now on Android and soon to be released on iOS.Football Manager Handheld's Challenge Mode debuted in the 2012 release, and presents users with a series of Challenges in addition to the ongoing management simulation. The two newly announced Challenges are priced at 69p each and are accessible through a new 'Store' button on the game's home screen.
"Since the introduction of the Challenge Mode, we've had a lot of positive feedback from players, many of whom asked for more of the same," said Miles Jacobson, studio director of developer Sports Interactive. "The introduction of these extra Challenges allows us not only to address this demand but also to gauge our customers' appetite for extra, optional content of this type."
To coincide with today's news, Football Manager 2012 is currently available at reduced prices until July 23 - the PC and Mac edition is available via Steam at a reduction of 40 percent, while both versions of FM Handheld are currently priced at Ł2.99 (down from Ł6.99).
Last month Jacobson spoke publicly for the first time about the events which led to the Championship Manager team defecting to Sega and establishing its eminent rival, Football Manager.

Huge leaps in Europe push Google OS to top of worldwide charts.
Android overtakes iOS to become most popular platform for mobile advertisers.
Advertising network Adfonic has revealed that in Q2 of 2012, Android's share of global mobile ad impressions overtook iOS. Android increased its share from 38 per cent in Q1 to 46 per cent in Q2, while iOS dropped from 45 per cent in Q1 to 34 per cent in Q2.
Android had already surpassed iOS in North America, but now leads Europe for the first time, accounting for 43 per cent of mobile ad impressions in Q2 across the continent.
The Google OS also strengthened its hold in North America where its share was up significantly - from 46 per cent in Q1 to 63 poet cent in Q2.

Vendor could be on course to reach its target of 6m for the year.
Taiwan-based OEM Asus is poised to bag a lucrative Q3, according to Digitimes, as the firm's tablet shipments are set to cross the 2.5 million mark.
H1 device shipments only hit 1.2 million, but the sudden spike in interest is due to Google's Galaxy Nexus 7.
The search giant made Asus the chosen one to produce its Google-coated tablet, a $199 effort that runs on the new Android Jelly Bean OS.
Google tentatively ordered 600,000 units to be shipped in June, but the likes of Wal-Mart have been selling out and increasing their stock to reach demand, meaning Asus may hit its target of six million tablets moved in 2012.

angry tapir writes with news on Android getting support for a third architecture. From the article:"ARM rival MIPS is continuing its push to make a mark in low-cost tablets and quickly trying to bring Android 4.1 (Jellybean) to its processors. 'We are working aggressively on bringing Jelly Bean to MIPS, and expect that it will be available to our licensees very soon,' said Jen Bernier-Santarini, director of corporation communications at MIPS, in an email. Tablets with MIPS processors are largely low-cost and have found buyers mostly in developing countries. MIPS last week said a new tablet called Miumiu W1 from Chinese company Ramos would become available in a few months in India, Latin America and Europe. The tablet has a 7-inch screen, a MIPS processor running at 1GHz, front camera and a microSD slot for expandable storage."

Early builds of CyanogenMod 10 have sprung up to enable users to get that buttery-smooth Jelly Beanexperience onto your Samsung Galaxy S III. Work is further along on the international edition of the quad-core CPU, while the US variants are still in need of some work. That said, if you're determined to free yourself from the watery shackles of Nature UX, you can get started right away -- but it might not be all that polished just yet.

Teams with Extent to give customers more than 75 titles at launch.
Smartphone game users in Korea are set to rise from 10.2m in 2011 to 33.1m in 2015 – a CAGR of 34 per cent – according to researcher Nomura.
The data is likely just the type that encouraged Korean network, KT, to partner with on-demand games provider, Extent, for a new monthly subscription-based mobile games service.
KT's Android-based platform is the 'first of its kind' to hit the country, offering customers unlimited play of 75+ premium games, which are all ad-free.
The 'Olleh GameTanium' service will also include ratings, reviews, and game trailers, offering developers a chance of extra promotion.
Peter von Schlossberg, president of Exent, said: "With one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the world and mobile game play among Koreans poised to continue its steep growth curve, we are excited to partner with KT to introduce GameTanium in one of the most connected cultures in the world."

Lumia sales now stand at four million as Nokia losses widen.
Shares actually rose in the stricken handset firm, which announced its Q2 results today. Why? Because the figures weren't as abysmal as some thought.
The firm's second-quarter net loss widened to 1.41 billion euros from 368 million euros in Q1, although sales actually increased a tiny amount to 7.5 billion euros, up from 7.4 billion euros.
But the core handset operation is still stuck in a rut. Lumia volumes increased but Nokia has still only sold 4m of them - a blip compared to sales of iPhone and Galaxy for example.
Interestingly, Nokia's feature phone business rose by 2.4 per cent to 73.5 million units while smartphone sales fell 39 per cent to 10.2 million units.
Of course, Nokia and its CEO Stephen Elop are in the midst of a re-structuring programme to deal with the rut. The firm has made thousands redundant and sold off subsidiaries such as Nokia Money and Vertu.

Google browser is a legitimate competitor for Safari.
After being announced last month, the Chrome web browser for iOS already has a 1.5 per cent share of the iOS browser market.
Little surprise seeing how, just hours after release, it became the most popular free app in Apple's iOS App Store.
According to online advertising network Chitika, while Chrome is making strides Safari continues to dominate the market.
The firm also found that almost 14.5% of iOS users surf the web using other apps - though not from dedicated third-party browsers, but instead from in app-browsing through programs like Facebook.
The pie chart pictured shows shares of browser usage on iOS 5 and represents data on July 17, 2012.

Android 4.0 device has full access to Google Play.
Sony have announced a new line of Walkmans (Walkmen? Walkmi?) with the flagship device being the Android-powered F800.
Available with 8GB, 16GB and 32GB memory storage, the Sony F800 Walkman has a 3.5 inch touchscreen display, is Bluetooth compatible and can download apps Google Play via wifi.
Music can be added by downloading tracks with Music Unlimited from Sony Entertainment Network, and iTunes content (as long as it’s not DRM) can also be dragged and dropped onto the Walkman’s media player; a smart move if the Japanese firm plan to take on the iPod.
This isn't Sony's first Android-powered Walkman - the mediocre Walkman Z was released earlier this year - but early indications are the F800 will be received more warmly.
It is expected to launch in Europe priced at around Ł210 ($279).

Back in May of this year, Internet security firm Bitdefender launched 'Clueful,' an iOS App that helps identify potentially intrusive applications and show users what they do behind their back, and giving users an inside look at all the information app developers can gather about a user. Seems legit, right? Apple doesn't think so. Or at least they have an issue with something behind the App that sparked them to pull it from the App Store. After initially reviewing and approving the App that was released on May 22, Apple has had a change of heart and has just removed the App from the AppStore. It's unclear [why it was yanked], and Bitdefender told SecurityWeek that the company is under NDA as far as explanations for the removal. Interestingly, Bitdefender did share some data that they gathered based on Clueful's analysis of more than 65,000 iOS apps so far, including the fact that 41.4 percent of apps were shown to track a user's location unbeknownst to them."

Industry rumors usually come with a heaping helping of salt, unless they're being issued from a trusted source. In this case, it's Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet spilling some beans regarding Microsoft's release roadmap. Though we've already caught wind that Windows Phone 8 devices would be arriving sometime this fall with nearly all major carrier support, Foley's source is now pegging the RTM build of that mobile OS for September, with the finalized consumer version and accompanying hardware hitting the marketplace in November. Given that timing and an impending October 26th bow for Windows 8 also on the horizon, any plans Redmond might've had for a dual platform launch will have to be shelved. That's all she wrote for now, folks -- we'll surely find out more concrete details in the coming months. So, take this gossamer morsel for what it's worth.

After all the excitement from the Yves Behar-designed OUYA console's massive Kickstarter campaignfades away, like every other console it will be judged on the quality of its games we finally have the name of one. Robotoki president Robert Bowling -- best known as @fourzerotwo on Twitter and formerly as a producer from Infinity Ward for the Call of Duty series -- has announced plans to bring an "episodic prequel" to the company's first game Human Element exclusively to OUYA. While not much is known about Human Element yet other than that it's a survival game set in a zombie apocalypse scheduled for release in 2015, although Bowling is promising OUYA backers will get exclusive access to updates during development. He can also be counted among that group, cheerfully noting in a video along with the announcement that he's contributed $10,000 to the cause. That's one project on the list -- any bets on which developer will be next to hitch their game to the bandwagon?

eCPM for iPhone is $2.85, followed by Android at $2.10.
Opera Software's State of Mobile Advertising report mined info from a global network of 35 billion+ ad impressions, which delivered more than $400 million to mobile publishers in 2012.
The browser firm bought premium ad network 4th Screen earlier this yearn, which helped it collate the stats.
The key findings are:
* The average eCPM on iPhone is Ł1.82 ($2.85), followed by Android at Ł1.34 ($2.10); Windows Phone is last at Ł13p ($0.20) eCPM
* Business & Finance is the top revenue category
* Performance varies significantly over very short periods of time, so publishers and advertisers should use multiple networks

Aryden writes with news of a recent court decision in which a judge ruled it was acceptable for police to impersonate the owner of a cell phone they had seized, in order to extract information from the owner's friends. The ruling stems from an incident in 2009 when police officers seized the iPhone of a suspected drug dealer, then used text messages to set up a meeting with another person seeking drugs."'There is no long history and tradition of strict legislative protection of a text message sent to, displayed, and received from its intended destination, another person's iPhone,' Penoyar wrote in his decision. He pointed to a 1990 case in which the police seized a suspected drug dealer's pager as an example. The officers observed which phone numbers appeared on the pager, called those numbers back, and arranged fake drug purchases with the people on the other end of the line. A federal appeals court held that the pager owner's Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure were not violated because the pager is 'nothing more than a contemporary receptacle for telephone numbers,' akin to an address book. The court also held that someone who sends his phone number to a pager has no reasonable expectation of privacy because he can't be sure that the pager will be in the hands of its owner. Judge Penoyar said that the same reasoning applies to text messages sent to an iPhone. While text messages may be legally protected in transit, he argued that they lose privacy protections once they have been delivered to a target device in the hands of the police."

Qantas just upped the ante for its Australian counterparts Jetstar and Virgin in the airline tablet wars. Following an earlier trial, the transporter plans to hand out free iPads to all of its passengers -- not just the high-flyers in business-class, like with Jetstar's iPads or Virgin's Galaxy Tabs -- on every Boeing 767aircraft in the fleet. The rollout, which starts in the last quarter of the year, will let those bored in the back seats watch an equally free 200 hours' worth of QStreaming audio and video. Don't confuse the gesture with a sudden bout of altruism on Qantas' part, however. The pound-and-a-half weight of acurrent iPad sheds the tremendous amount of weight that would normally be needed for a conventional in-flight entertainment system built into the headrest, which on a typical 375-seat 767 could see the iPads pay for themselves within years, if not sooner. The option will give many Aussies something to look forward to for their domestic summer vacations. In the meantime, hop past the break for a Qantas video explaining how QStreaming worked during the original trial run.

We just received a "save the date" email from a Samsung US representative that revealed a new Galaxy device will be seeing the light of day on August 15th. We didn't receive any details on what it could be, though this is most likely a US-bound device -- the email says "please join Samsung Electronics America for a major announcement and unveiling of the newest Galaxy device." With that tidbit in mind, we have a couple ideas: first, it may be the Galaxy S Blaze Q, since internal docs pin the phone's release on same exact day. With that being a T-Mobile exclusive for now, however, we're unsure that it'll be the recipient of so much pomp and circumstance. There's also a possibility that we'll see the Galaxy Note 10.1, which was announced at MWC in February and previewed in March. While we'd love to see the Galaxy Note 2, the odds of it being the mystery device are incredibly slim since the phablet is rumored to launch on the worldwide stage at IFA 2012 later in the month. Gotta love the guessing games that leave us in suspense and keep us on our toes, right?

There's only so much kit you can cram into a sub-$200 tablet without pushing past the price ceiling. And for Google's Jelly Bean-blessed Nexus 7, corners were definitely cut, leaving users without a handy microSD slot for expansion and rear-facing camera. But where there's a will, there's the XDA and its community of developers to remedy the situation. As you can glimpse from the photo above, an enterprising forum member by the handle of c0m47053 devised an interesting workaround for the slate's lack of expandable storage and then some. Using the StickMount app available on the Play store, which allows users to mount/dismount mass storage devices, he was able to connect the ASUS-made tab to a USB hub and hook it up to a keyboard, mouse and, most amusingly of all, a floppy drive -- to playUltima on DOSbox, of course. It goes without saying that a feat of this kind requires root access, but thankfully that's what Mountain View made the Nexuses for.

We're rather big fans of the Nexus 7 here at Engadget HQ -- it's just hard not to like a $200 tablet with aTegra 3 SoC and 7-inch glass-bonded IPS display running pure Jelly Bean. Of the few missing features, there's one we're bemoaning more than the lack of rear camera, and that's the absence of any kind of HDMI or MHL video output. So far, watching movies with the Nexus 7's been relegated to using a Nexus Q and streaming content from Google Play or YouTube.
Enter Wi-Fi Media, an app available for free on Google Play that lets most Android devices like the Nexus 7 play movies, music and stills on any screen via any Cavium PureVu-compatible streamer, such as HTC's $90 Media Link HD. We tested Wi-Fi Media with our Nexus 7 and Media Link HD and found it to work pretty much as advertised except for some caveats. First the app doesn't mirror your screen -- you're limited to playing content stored on the tablet or on the network via DLNA, which means no YouTube, Netflix or games. Second, the app doesn't handle some common file types -- like AVI, for example.
While it supports watching movies, listening to music and looking at pictures, keep in mind that Wi-Fi Media is not a particularly polished app. In addition to playing local and remote DLNA content, you're able to login to Facebook and Picasa and stream images directly from these accounts, but that's pretty much it in terms of functionality. There's also no way to configure the Media Link HD, so you'll need a sanctioned HTC handset to setup the multimedia streamer before using it with a Nexus 7. Want to know more? Peek at our screenshot gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.

FreakZone Games will deliver retro adventure game MANOS: The Hands of Fateto iOS devices on July 26. Based on the awful 1966 cult movie of the same name, the game has players controlling Mike through locales inspired by the film, as well as settings from other movies.
According to FreakZone's site, "MANOS honours bad movies and games and borrows a lot of conventions from famous badness of the past, while at the same time bringing them all together to create something good." The game contains references to multiple films and games such as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, along with Easter eggs dedicated specifically to Mystery Science Theater 3000.
The development team plans to release the NES-inspired game on Android devices, including the Kindle Fire, later this year.

Analysts believe forecasts will be missed as neophile consumers delay spending till October.
Apple consumers are the most loyal breed on the mobile market, but increasingly hot chatter of an iPhone 5 is slowing demand.
The next fiscals are due this week, and Wall Street is not getting too excited. Reuters reports that iPhone sales figures are set to drop in Q3 across Europe and China, the firm's two largest markets beyond its native US.
Apple is expected to report fiscal third-quarter earnings of $10.35 a share on revenue of $37.2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. And the analyst thinks Apple may miss the average sales forecast by about 0.2 per cent
It would be a case of history repeating itself, as iPhone sales dipped 17.1 per cent in Q3 2011 (ahead of the October 4S release) opening the door for Samsung to become the world's biggest smartphone maker.
However, WSJ analysts predict a bumper Q4 for Apple, should rumours of the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini prove to be true.

The firm's fastest-selling S smartphone debut to date.
Samsung's president of mobile, Shin Jong-kyun, has declared the Galaxy S III has smashed past the ten million sales milestone since its May 29th release.
It's a huge achievement for the Korean OEM, as the device becomes its fastest-selling model thus far.
It beats fellow flagship devices, the S and S II, which reached the 10m mark in seven and five months respectively.
This pushes the cumulative sales of Samsung's Galaxy S series past 60 million, with the original two reaching the 50m milestone at the start of June.

6.9 million in the first three quarters compared to 3.7 million iPhones and 1.3 million for Samsung's flagship.
New data from Strategy Analytics suggests the Nokia Lumia is off to a good start, but it should be noted that the world of mobile has changed hugely since 2007 and 2009, and smartphones have become ever more prevalent.
The iPhone was new and strange back in 2007. It was also expensive and its availability was limited to selected exclusive operator partners.
Now, the market is very different. And it's worth mentioning that the 6.9 million in nine month figure for Lumia compares with iPhone 4S's4m in a weekend and Galaxy S III's 10m in under two months.
Neil Mawston, executive director, Strategy Analytics, said: "Based on historical shipment benchmarks, Nokia's new Lumia portfolio is performing reasonably well. Some of the pessimism surrounding Nokia and Microsoft's emerging partnership so far may be misplaced.
"However, Nokia and Microsoft are clearly not out of the woods yet. With a new Apple iPhone 5 expected on the horizon, and Samsung's Galaxy S3 selling in huge quantities, Nokia will need to pull something impressive out of the bag for the next-generation Windows Phone 8 launch later this year to sustain its tentative early momentum."

But the antivirus software provider remains clueless as to why it was chopped.
Antivirus software provider Bitdefender launched Clueful in May. The former ME App Of The Day is designed to detect the apps that source your location, kill your battery, read your address books, and assault you with ads.
Sounds pretty useful, right?
Seemingly Apple thought so too as the app was enrolled in its App Store, but Bitdefender has been told its baby is no longer welcome – though without a clear reason why.
The boot happens to coincide with Bitdefender's latest report that found 41 per cent of iPhone apps can access a user's location, while one in five can access address books.
More worryingly still, just 57.5 per cent of apps encrypt the data, meaning that more than a third of details are at risk of fraud.

Reuters has reported that Apple’s next gen iPhone will have a 19-pin dock connector instead of the current 30-pin one.
Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that the smaller connector would make room for the earphone socket moving to the bottom of the device.
Apple has used the 30-pin port as standard in its mobile devices since the third gen iPod. The new port could be similar to the MacBook’s smaller Thunderbolt port.
Some Chinese vendors are already offering iPhone 5 cases with a smaller charging port cut out and earphone socket on the bottom.

Following last year's launch of its potent, price-savvy Android smartphone, Xiaomi is already purportedly crafting its even more powerful successor. Alongside a bundle of blurry cam images, leaks from within factories making the next iteration say that it'll pack a 720p screen, one of Qualcomm'squad-core processors and a dual-flash setup alongside the camera. There's still the curious absence of a front-facing camera, but this should to help ensure the phone lands with a price tag just as attractive asXiaomi's last device. While rival manufacturer Meizu priced its latest quad-core phone at around $480, the Foxconn-based moles reckon this next-generation (likely MIUI-powered) slab could land at just over of $300. If all these rumors (and that price) have piqued your interest, you can head on the source for a handful of extra images.

Ouya designer aims at portability for new device
The new Android-powered Ouya console will not be as big as Xbox 360 or PS3; rather, it will be quite small, designer Yves Béhar has said. He's noted that the device won't measure more than a few inches wide. Many put the new console at about the size of a Rubik's Cube, which measures 2.2 inches.
With the smaller form factor Béhar still has considerations to make, as the console is expected to run a rather meaty NVidia Tegra 3 quad-core ARM processor as well as 1GB of memory and another 8GB of flash storage. That kind of power is going to generate a lot of heat that has to be allowed to exit the console.
"Our console is quite small, around the size of a Rubik's cube, and so it will easily fit anywhere in a room, or be easy to throw in a backpack," said Béhar during a live Q&A posted to Kotaku.
"We intend to give the Tegra chipset room to breathe, as obviously it does get warm. Airflow is important here."
The console is still being developed, with no final word on just what the device will look like. All we have so far is the rendered image posted to the project's Kickstarter, which may or may not be completely reflective of the final design. The console has now generated well over $5.4 million in funding from over 42,000 people.

According to mobile developer Madfinger Games, piracy rates on the Android platform are "unbelievably high".
In a statement issued via Facebook, the dev says that the rate at which Android users were ripping off its neat-looking FPS zombie shooter, Dead Trigger, were so high that it's forced them to make the $0.99 game completely free."[The] piracy rate on Android devices was unbelievably high," said a rep regarding the odd choice to go free. "At first we intend to make this game available [to] as many people as possible - that's why it [cost] as little as a buck much less than the $8 for SHADOWGUN.
The firm said it had no intention of going free-to-play due to its lack of experience with the business model, but adds the the "piracy rate was so giant" that it decided to try it out.
Madfinger Games notes that the game contains no in-app purchases, and its truly free in its entirety.

Apple is offering a temporary fix for a hack that allows iPhone and iPad users to obtain in-app purchases for free.
The hack involves a few configuration changes and the installation of some fake certification files on devices that fool apps into thinking they're communicating with Apple when they're actually connected to a hoax server. In response, Apple has given developers access to its private APIs on iOS for the first time, and is urging them to make use of its receipt validation system that cross-checks purchases made inside applications with the company's own records.
Once the fix is implemented in an app, faked purchases will effectively be wiped, but only as long as users upgrade the app in question, the Guardian reports.
Over 100 games have been affected by the hack, including Plants vs. Zombies, Infinity Blade,FIFA 12 and Angry Birds. Apple plans to introduce a permanent fix later this year with iOS 6.

It's the most inclusive Olympics ever… as long as you don't want to use the internet.
DRUGS! GUNS! KNIVES! 3G!
Which one of these is not the same?
3G devices appear on the list of items prohibited from this year's Olympics. which classes mobile base stations alongside illicit substances and weapons.
And don't try to sneak one in either, because the site warns “there are no storage facilities available and if you surrender an item, you won’t be able to get it back.”
This weird, draconian rule has presumably been invented to ensure visitors have to pay for access to one of the wifi hotspots Olympic sponsor BT have installed around the Olympic venues.
Tomas Mendoza, managing director of Tep Wireless which offers smartphones and pocket WiFi rental services, said: “We’re just two days away from the start of the first ever Olympic Games in the modern, digital era, but unfortunately the organisers clearly don’t appreciate the advantages technology is offering – and what the public expect as a result.
“These are the people who’ve had to go to the considerable trouble – and expense – of buying tickets, booking flights and finding affordable accommodation in one of the world’s most expensive cities. Their next priority is to have reliable and affordable mobile internet connectivity for all their devices so they can share their once in a lifetime experience with family and friends.”

Profits rose 21 per cent to $8.8 billion. That's either "thrilling" or "disappointing", depending on who you listen to.
Apple third quarter results rose 21 per cent to $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per share, on revenue of $35 billion, up 22 per cent from a year earlier.
However, these results were less than analysts had expected and as such, shares fell in after-hours trading by $34 - almost six per cent.
Previous estimates had suggested Apple would post earnings per share of $10.36 on revenue of $37.2 billion.
Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said the company was "thrilled" with its record sales of iPads in the June quarter. But then he would say that.
Apple reported that it sold 26 million iPhones in the quarter, representing a 28 per cent increase on the same quarter a year ago. Apple also sold 17 million iPads during the quarter, an 84 per cent unit increase.

Survey says there is an "unprecedented level of demand" for the next Apple phone.
Are you saving your money for the new iPhone yet? Why not? Isn't our incessant rumour-mongering making your credit card twitch?
Research conducted by ChangeWave has found not only “an uptick” in planned consumer smartphone purchases this quarter, but an “unprecedented level of advance demand” for the iPhone 5.
The survey of 4,042 consumers (88 per cent of whom were in the US) asked participants how likely they are to purchase the next iPhone.
The key thing here, though, it to compare the 2012 results with a similar one deducted in October 2011 before the release of the iPhone 4S.

The company has disabled the device's advanced search feature following its patent dispute with Apple.
Once the newly updated version of the software is installed on the Galaxy S3, its function that searches contacts, apps and other on-device material, is no longer available.
The news was first reported by news site Android Central, who added that users of the device were not notified that the update would disable the search feature.
Whilst this change was applied to international versions of the Galaxy S3, it echoes a similar move made within the US.
It is claimed by Apple that the function of the device infringes its patent of the single search interface used by its iPhone and the Siri feature, which it uses when collating search results from a number of sources.
Apple had already succeeded in their attempt to place a temporary sales ban on a different Samsung device, the Galaxy Nexus, after that too was found to be in breach of Apple's patent.

The new iPhone 5 from Apple will ship on September 21st, according to sources close to the company.
A Chinese source first leaked the information yesterday to French site App4Phone, providing the specific release date, which it states was received directly from Apple.
As expected, the source also confirmed that the addition of the new 19-pin connector on the base of the device, which will render older accessories for the device obsolete unless used with a separate adapter.
Without an official announcement, the device is widely known as the iPhone 5 - however, Apple may well adopt the same approach it did with the latest iPad, which is simply known as 'the new iPad'.
Other major changes to the latest model of the iPhone include an upgraded screen, which will now measure 3.75 inches rather than the previous 3.5 inches used on its predecessors.
It has been reported that the aim of the new connection port on the base of the device, is to save space so that the headphone jack, which is currently located on the top of the device, can be moved to its base as well.
After an extended legal battle between the two company's, Apple will be weary of Samsung and its recent success with its latest smartphone - the Samsung Galaxy S3, which has already sold over 10 million units during its first two months of release.
The September release date surprised most analysts who predicted the device would be released in October, as was the previous iPhone 4S.
If true, it is widely believed that Apple's decision to go with an earlier release date would be to compete directly with Samsung and its smartphone devices.

Publisher's licensing deal with Harmonix expires after July 31st
Rock Band for iOS has officially been dropped by EA despite previoulsy denying the game was set to be canned.
In May customers had been sent a message in-game stating the game would be shut down by the end of the month, which the publisher later claimed to have been sent in error.
EA stated that the title would remain live, and apologised for any confusion caused.
Two months later however, the publisher has now confirmed Rock Band will no longer be available on the App Store, as its licensing agreement with creator Harmonix is set to end.
Rock Band and Rock Band Reloaded will be discontinued from the store after July 31st.

[Cmonaco3's] girlfriend wanted a better way to control her iPod when driving. She didn’t want to take her eyes of the road and asked him if he could help. He ended upbuilding a heads up display which reads out track information and offers a few simple buttons for control.
The display includes controls for track forward, track back, and play/pause. Those buttons, along with the LCD screen, mount on the windshield using a suction cup. This way the driver doesn’t have to completely remove focus from the road to control the iPod which is sitting in the passenger’s seat.
To accomplish this [Cmonaco] used a dock connector breakout board for communication between an Arduino and the iPod. The Arduino pulls song information to be displayed on the graphic LCD screen, and sends commands to the iPod when it detects a button push. See a quick demo of the setup after the break.

Reuters reports that Apple shed more than five percent of its stock price value in after-hours trading after the company reported its second quarterly miss on results in less than a year, highlighting how the Apple brand is becoming less resistant to the economic and product cycles that have plagued rivals. 'Clearly it was a disappointment,' says Channing Smith, Co-Manager of Capital Advisors Growth Fund. 'We expected a lot of consumers will probably delay their upgrade and their purchases until the iPhone 5 comes out. We saw a similar trend occur last year with the iPhone 4S.' Executives acknowledged buyers were refraining from purchases because of 'rumors and speculation' around the iPhone 5, which sources have said will ship in September with a thinner and larger screen. 'The iPhone 5 is already the most hyped device and for it to exceed expectations is going to be really hard,' says BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. This is one of many reasons Apple is so notoriously secretive. With the levels of hype that Apple product launches garner, it would undoubtedly crush its own sales if it announced products even months in advance. Instead, Apple slowly and silently draws down inventory in distribution channels, and then the upgraded product is available immediately (or nearly immediately) after it's announced. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, 'there is an incredible anticipation out there or for future products and as you would expect given what we've been able to deliver in the past.'"

Following news this week of a game developer who turned the Android version of a game free because of piracy concerns, software developer Matt Gemmell has written a lengthy post explaining why he thinks Android apps are laboring under a broken business model. "People have to get paid. There has to be a revenue stream. You can’t reliably have that revenue stream if the platform itself and the damaged philosophy behind it actively sabotages commerce. If you want a platform to be commercially viable for third-party software developers, you have to lock it down. Just like in real life, closing the door and locking it helps make sure that your money remains yours. Bad behaviour has to be more difficult than good behaviour - and good behaviour means paying for your software." He also has some harsh arguments about some of the assumptions and philosophies underpinning the an industry built on an open platform. "Nerds like to say that people care about choice at that level. Nerds are wrong. Nerds care about choice, and nerds are such a tiny minority of people that nobody else much cares what the hell they think. Android is designed with far too much nerd philosophy, and open is gravy to those people because it’s synonymous with customization. ... Open is broken as a money-making platform model, unless you’re making the OS or the handsets. Most of us aren't doing that."

While we've been fussing over the Xperia GX (aka the LT29i), it seems Sony's been working on something one integer higher. Mobile-review has published a run-down of a device it claims is called the LT30p -- aka the Mint we first heard of back in January -- which also appears to possess many of the specs we'd want from a high-end phone. The front side hosts a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch LCD, while the rear boasts the same 13-megapixel camera as the GX, and there's a microSD slot on the side too. Internally,Mobile-review says ICS is running off a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, which all sounds healthy enough -- but since the build quality looks a bit suspect and we don't know for sure that this is a final production handset, we'll wait for IFA fever to paint a fuller picture.
Update: Although Mobile-review says it has a 4.3-inch screen, a side-by-side photo with the GS III after the break suggests the Mint's panel may be slightly larger than that.

BlackBerry users who routinely feel left out while friends share retro pictures of coffee and pastries onInstagram will soon have their own BB alternative. Slides released by N4BB reveal that aScalado-powered photo editing app has been baked into BB10, which is due early next year. The software will let you tweak and enhance your casual snaps, but also offer a carousel of aged filters you can drag onto shots of your own taste-appropriate snack goods. The Apple iPad may as well be called the Teflon Tablet for now, since challengers can't quite stick. Thanks to those 17 million iPads shipped in the second quarter, Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple held on to the 68 percent of tablet market share that IDC credited to the company in the previous season. That may not sound like a change in the status quo, but it's a significant jump from the 62 percent Apple had a year ago -- and not very good news for anyone else. Android is still holding on at 29.3 percent, although that's slightly underwhelming given the surge of extra devices in that time frame. The real hurt was dished out to Windows 7 tablets and "others" like RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, both of whom were cut down to just 1.2 points of share each in the spring. We'll see if the newer crowd moves the needle for Android in the summer, although the well-received Nexus 7's current scarcity won't help its chances -- and both Microsoft as well as RIM are in holding patterns for the next several months.

IronMonkey is probably best known for adapting popular EA titles to mobile, like Dead Space and Mass Effect Infiltrator, while Firemint has produced a number of its own popular games, including Flight Control, Real Racing, and SPY Mouse.
Together, the two firms are responsible for more than 85 million downloads from Apple's App Store.
Firemonkeys will work out of EA’s Australian headquarters in Melbourne, where the teams will create new, original titles, while expanding on their existing catalogues.
Last month, EA said it plans to shift its business away from premium mobile game sales to focus on the freemium model, calling free-to-play titles "the norm" moving forward.
Furthermore, big acquisitions of Playfish and PopCap have made it obvious that the company sees its future in mobile and social.
As for the new Firemonkeys, IronMonkey general manager Tony Lay told GameSpot that it wants to “sit shoulder to shoulder with EA studios, like DICE and Criterion.”

An insane $0.8 trillion of a $2.1 trillion market.
Bugger the recession, Gartner reckons spend on consumer tech will rise $114 billion in 2012 compared with 2011, and will reach a staggering $2.7 trillion by the end of 2016.
The market broadly constitutes devices based around mobile, computing, media and entertainment, plus all the services that make them useful.
Mobile alone will hit $1 trillion by 2016, with devices accounting for ten per cent of the spend. That's $222 billion this year and $300 billion by 2016.
Gartner predicts that consumer spending on mobile apps stores and content will rise from $18 billion in 2012 to $61 billion by 2016.
And the other great growth area will be digital books, news and magazines – up from $5 billion in 2012 to $16 billion by 2016.

Android smartphone activations on the rise, but iOS is still the dominant smartphone platform.
A report from Good Technology has revealed that the majority their customers' device activations are on the iOS platform.
The breakdown of smartphone activations shows that on average, the two newest iPads and iPhones drove most activations between April and July this year. The iPhone 4S was the top device with nearly twice as many activations as any other smartphone..
However, while iOS devices still account for more than twice the number of Android activations, corporate use of Android smartphones and tablets grew by ten per cent quarter over quarter.

Korean OEM steams ahead of its US rival with fresh support from Galaxy S III.
New data from Juniper shows that Samsung has shot off into the smartphone shipping horizon, distributing 52.1 million units in Q2, more than doubling Apple's 26 million iPhones.
However, it should be noted that Samsung has a veritable army of smartphones on the market, which only continues to grow. Comparably, Apple has only released five iPhones, and it's thenewest models that buyers are clamouring over.
That said, the Korean firm's lead is still impressive, and its Galaxy S III supported its growth by selling more than ten million units in under two months.
Meanwhile, RIM shipped just 7.4 million smartphones in Q2, trailing Nokia which hit 10.2 million as it waits to see whether the switch from Symbian to Windows Phone will pay off, while HTC reached 11.6 million.
Daniel Ashdown, research analyst, Juniper Research, said: "Sony should be doing better: it, like Samsung, has a global name and the Xperia brand is well-established but its marketing and products have been disappointing so far."

Last year a rumour surfaced that Facebook was working on a mobile phone with HTC, and those whispers haven't gone away.
New rumours have surfaced that seem to give weight to the idea that the Taiwanese manufacturer is working with the social media giant.
According to a reporter at Bloomberg, the device – codenamed Buffy – will be released mid 2013. It's expected that the phone will run on Android and that Facebook has recruited a team of former Apple engineers to build it.
Shortly after these new rumours broke, a Facebook spokesperson told The Next Web: "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."
If this story turns out to be true, then it could positively change the fortunes of HTC, who are losing users to rival Android manufacturers such as Samsung.

But the device could be riddled with malware, as 52 per cent are in the dark about smartphone security.
Mobile management firm Kaspersky Labs teamed with YouGov to find 93 per cent of Brits own a smartphone, compared to 64 per cent that own a desktop PC.
The turn in the tide has made a huge impact, with 78 per cent using a smartphone as their first web browsing method, falling to 57 per cent for desktop users.
Meanwhile, Brits are the most lax Europeans for adopting smartphone security, with 52 per cent oblivious that such software even exists, while just 19 per cent have adopted anti-virus tech.

King.com, Swedish developer and publisher of social games, today released their popular Bubble Witch Saga for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch).
The game is one of the most popular Facebook games, with over four million daily users. The mobile version means that players can connect and synch their accounts so that all their results and achievements are stored on both formats simultaneously. “Since both consumers and the industry overall are focusing more and more on mobile gaming, the launch of our platform independent Facebook game has been a top priority for King.com,” says Riccardo Zacconi, CEO of King.com.
“We are very pleased to be pioneers and making this game available for our players already. You no longer have to be logged in to play, which makes it possible to experience the excitement of Bubble Witch Saga whenever and wherever you like, without losing your progress in the game,” Zacconi says.
Bubble Witch Saga is a game where the player helps three witches make a brew by shooting bubbles. An Android version is planned for later this year, along with further mobile versions of the popular Saga series. You can find the iOS version on the AppStore now.

New controller from Apple similar to DualShock, will work with Apple TV
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
www.apple.com
Apple's move into gaming, however unpronounced, has taken a tiny step forward with a new patent. Apple's new patent filing shows a gaming controller that could very well give core gamers an alternative to touch-screen gaming and open the doors to developers to bring more sophisticated games to iOS.
The patent, which was published today after being filed in March, will link various devices such as iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs and other Apple owned hardware. The patent shows "a schematic of a video game controller for the standalone media player of [an Apple TV] or a video game system." The controller will use Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and NFC tags to connect to the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
The move shows that Apple is increasingly working on a way to break into the gaming industry at large, perhaps without bursting into the console market. This new controller could be seen as a competitor to the rising idea of platform-agnostic games, where developers hope that games will be the driving factor in getting gamers attached, not the platform itself.
Of course, this controller is by no means a reality, and like other patents, it's entirely possible that an actual product will never be borne from it.

Apple's latest patent includes a futuristic interface
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
www.apple.com
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent that allows users to interface with computers far beyond our current mice, keyboards, or motion controllers. According to Patently Apple, the patent was acquired from Canadian inventor Timothy Pryor and covers "electro-optical determination of temporary surface distortion caused by the physical input signal."
The patent is dubbed "5D" in that force-vector direction and magnitude of force is added to touch. The technology does not require special touchscreen to work, so the input device or screen can be made of any material. The patent also includes tactile feedback, 3D sensing capability, and the ability to detect complex figures.
The technology focuses on television-related applications and the patent includes optional stereoscopic 3D glasses. All told, Apple's patent could allow for 3D motion controls far surpassing the information that Microsoft's Kinect can currently. Could Apple upend gaming and television interfaces like it did the mobile market?
The full patent documentation can be found here.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says both product lines will get refreshed in September
[h=3]Apple Inc[/h]
The entire world knows that Apple is preparing a new iPhone and iPad - it's just a matter of when we'll actually see the new hardware. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is now planning to release iPhone 5 in early September and the iPad Mini shortly thereafter.
Although this should be considered a rumor for now, it's worth noting that Kuo's record is good; he correctly predicted that Apple would kill off the 17-inch MacBook Pro, and he was one of the first to report on Apple using new in-cell technology to make the next iPhone thinner.
Kuo believes not only that Apple will introduce the iPad Mini in September, but also an updated model of the third generation iPad - one that would address the tablet's heating problems.
Kuo is forecasting huge iPhone and iPad sales for the fourth quarter of 2012, once the new models have the full quarter to build up sales. iPhone sales are pegged to hit 55 million and iPad sales are predicted to reach nearly 24 million during the quarter.
Apple will be releasing earnings later today, so we should have the most up-to-date sales figures for last quarter at that point.

[Jake von Slatt] is at it again; putting his own artistic spin on ordinary items. This time around it’s the glass on the back of an iPhone. It kept breaking and after a few replacements he wanted to try to replace the glass with a piece of etched brass. But part way through that experiment, he figured out how to use toner transfer to develop these stunning custom iPhone glass back plates.
The first step is to source the correct replacement back for your phone. These are made of two parts, the glass and a plastic backer. By carefully heating and wedging the two parts with some popsicle sticks he was able to separate the pieces. Next, he cleans and buffs the glass, preparing it for the artwork he is about to apply. Toner transfer paper, just like that used for PCB resist, is used to print and adhere a design to the underside of the glass. From there he hand paints over the black outline to achieve the results seen above.
It takes time and patience, but shouldn’t be any harder than etching a circuit board.

The design group working on the new Ouya home console has published a trio of new concept images of the device and its controller.
Ouya, the Android-based games console that sparked an investment craze on Kickstarter, is believed will be as small as a Rubik's Cube when the product is finalised.
So far the project has accumulated $5.5 million with more than 43,000 people backing the project.
The new controller image, shown below, is described as a "work in progress".
"We're still deciding on the buttons. For now, we've stuck with the colour circles as placeholders," read a statement on the official Kickstarter page.
One image of the console appears to be a concept design of it being opened with a screwdriver - Ouya is billed as a 'hackable' console that owners can root for themselves without invalidating their licence.
The system, built by Fuseproject, is expected to pack a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core ARM processor, as well as 1GB of memory, 8 GB of flash storage and two USB ports.

OnLive has confirmed its cloud gaming service will be available at launch on the crowd-sourced Android console Ouya.
Confirming a CVG story that first reported theOnLive Ouya deal, an OnLive statement said Ouya can extend and build on its commitment to "make the best games available to everyone, everywhere."The statement reads: "When OnLive first heard about Ouya, we were excited to see console gaming becoming more available and open. Like Ouya, we came to gaming with a new vision for making top-quality gaming accessible to more people, and we continue to look for ways to expand on that vision.
"Ouya is rethinking the console business, making waves by using standard technology to make gaming for your living room accessible, affordable and more innovative than ever. In OnLive's case, we pioneered a groundbreaking, cloud-based system that instantly delivers games to any device on demand.
"We are pleased to announce that OnLive will be available on Ouya at launch, extending and building on our commitment to make the best games available to everyone, everywhere."
For OUYA backers, OnLive added, the deal means thus:
- OnLive will deliver "hundreds" of games from more than 80 publishers to the Ouya console for play on demand.
- Ouya owners will be able to play any of these games both at home on their Ouya console, and on the go on PCs, Macs, tablets and phones.
- Instant demos will be available, allowing customers up to 30 minutes of free game time before deciding on whether to buy the tech.
OnLive UK boss Bruce Grove told CVG of the startup console yesterday: "If Ouya comes along and connects to your TV and suddenly puts games in front of people in an easy way and makes it low friction, that's going to attract a new market.
"The industry has exploded and now there are far more people out there who are playing games than we might consider to be gamers. Give someone a $99 box, tell them to plug it into their TV, give them a whole load of games, at $99 [Ouya] are going to do pretty well."

Some interesting news has come out of Apple's filings against Samsung. First, Google warned Samsung that their 'P1' (Galaxy Tab) and 'P3' (Galaxy Tab 10.1) tablets were 'too similar' to the iPad. In addition, Samsung's own Product Design Group note it was 'regrettable' that the Galaxy S 'looks similar' to the iPhone. Finally, how designers at a Samsung-sponsored evaluation noted the Galaxy S 'copied the iPhone too much' and 'innovation is needed.' Of course, Samsung has some ammunition of its own, including how Apple copied Sony's designs. In unrelated news, Judge Grewal has sanctioned Samsung for not preserving emails from automatic deletion, even after litigation has begun."

Apple announced during WWDC 2012 that it is going to ditch Google maps and bring out its own under iOS 6. So, Google started working and in fact raced ahead of Apple in providing 3D maps for iOS. Through a blog post, Google announced that it has now made 3D imagery available on its Google Earth for iOS app. Users of iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or new iPad, while using Google Earth for iOS app, will feel that they are virtually flying over cities. The feature, as of now, works only for 12 regions. Cities for which the 3D imagery is provided are from US with an expectation of a city in Rome. The U.S. cities include: Boulder, Colo., Boston, Charlotte, N.C., Lawrence, Kan., Long Beach, Calif., Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., San Diego, Santa Cruz, Calif., Tampa, Fla., Tucson, Ariz., and San Francisco, plus its East Bay and Peninsula neighbors, notes the blog post."

Mobile device to be used as virtual gamepad in Apple TV system
Apple has filed a patent that may end the first-world plague of hunting for your remote.
The system described is similar to the recently unveiled Microsoft SmartGlass, or even Apple's own Apple TV AirPlay tech, and allows a user to take control of a myriad of electronic devices through another device.
Though many possibilities were named such as laptops and tablets, the iPhone was singled out as the focus of the patent.
The system seems to be based on software rather than hardware, and works by detecting the frequency at which communications take place between a device and its controller. With that established, the system allows the chosen device to act as a proxy controller.
In other words, no more worry about which remote is for the TV, and which for cable.

Analysts reckon 62 per cent of the $5.9B Q2 profit comes from mobile business.
It's all going so right for Samsung at the moment. While Nokia, RIM and HTC flounder, and Apple fails to live up to the insane expectations of Wall Street, the Korean firm just keeps powering on.
Its operating profit shot up 79 per cent to 6.7 trillion won ($5.9 billion) in second quarter, up from 3.8 trillion won a year ago.
The firm makes all manner of consumer tech and also chips and panels for third parties, but it's mobile that's making all the running. Samsung sold 49m smartphones in the quarter including 7m Galaxy S III sales alone (the device has since passed 10m sales).

The company has announced it has agreed to acquire security technology firm AuthenTec for $356 million.
AuthenTec deals with data and content protection, producing a number of products including fingerprint scanner technology, contactless payment systems and identity protection software.
The company has previously worked with a number of big name hardware producers, including Samsung, Lenovo, LG, Nokia and Motorola.
The move would indicate that Apple is looking to increase it's mobile protection and security measures, just weeks after it wasreported that the company silently removed a statement from its website that claimed Macs were immune to PC viruses.
As part of its 'Why you'll love a Mac' section of its site, a statement from the company previously read "It doesn't get PC viruses."
However, this was silently changed to "It's built to be safe".
It's no surprise that the company is looking to increase its presence within the mobile security sector, with the number of mobile malware, viruses and other threats currently in circulation, matched with the popularity of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.

Cleverly titled Google Handwrite, the feature allows users to write search terms onto Google's homepage using their fingers.
Google software engineer Rui Ueyama said: "We designed Handwrite to complement rather than replace typing; with the feature enabled, you can still use the keyboard at any time by tapping on the search box."
The feature is available in 27 languages and works on Apple devices running IOS 5 and higher, smartphones running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and higher, and tablets running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher.
To get the feature up and running in your mobile browser, tap on Settings at the bottom of the screen and enableHandwrite.
It's still in beta, so to avoid mistakes, Google recommends writing search queries in block capitals.

New subscription service offers monthly fee for unlimited gaming on Android tablets
Exent's offering for a monthly 'all-you-can-eat' subscription service has just been released, bringing numerous games to Android tablets. The new model will aim to offer many popular games with all content for a modest fee each month through the GameTanium Mobile platform, something Exent says is unlike anything currently available.
"The GameTanium tablet offering is yet another step in our anytime, anywhere gameplay vision," says Zvi Levgoren, CEO at Exent. "We now offer our world-leading Games on Demand service across all of the platforms necessary to enable games to be played wherever, whenever and however consumers want to play them.
"As a result, the service represents a great opportunity for carriers to engage their customers on a more meaningful and ultimately, more profitable level and for game publishers to drive their games more deeply into players' lives."
Exent hopes to bring together premium titles to help consumers weed out "the overwhelming population of game demos, spam, broken apps and just plain boring games offered in the Android Market."

Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Beanquestions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an updgrade, no?

The Windows Phone 8 SDK has escaped to the wild, and some sifting through the device emulator has dug up elements that Microsoft either skipped or only touched on lightly during the big unveiling in June. The most important addition may be the one customers see the least: backup. A WP7.hu search has the new OS replicating apps, settings and SMS messages in the cloud to prevent disaster, and that new SD card support will let WP8 owners shuffle photos from internal storage to the removable kind for safekeeping. There's also more work on Internet Explorer than we saw before, with MobileTechWorldnoticing that DataSense provides an option for Opera-like remote compression to save that precious cellular bandwidth.
Media fans might have the most to gain. If we go by The Verge, both the Music/Video and Xbox hubs are getting fresh coats of paint -- both to integrate new ventures like Xbox Music as well as to jive more closely with the SmartGlass visual theme. Shutterbugs will like the long-awaited options to crop and rotate their work, pick multiple photos, and unify third-party camera apps under a Lenses concept. There's even more clever features in store, such as a Maps update that finds nearby WiFi hotspots, so head on over to the sources to get a full sense of where Microsoft will be going.

Some happy news for the many who've already plunked down their hard earned cash on OUYA -- the Android-based gaming console will be getting streaming gaming courtesy of the folks at OnLive. The prospective console maker broke the news on its Kickstarter page, noting that the experience will also include 30 minute free demos of "nearly every game" in its library, including Ravaged and Darksiders II. Also, some news for those wondering if the other side of the console's controller was a radical departure [see above]. Check out a press release detailing the OnLive partnership after the break. Oh, and for those of you keeping track: the Kickstarter page is currently at a whopping $5.5 million pledged, with a dozen days left.

Snes9x EX v1.4.31 is released. Snes9x EX is an SNES/Super Famicom emulator written in C++ for Android, iOS, WebOS. It uses the emulation backend from Snes9x and is built on top of the Imagine engine.
Features:
* Accurate emulation and similar compatibility to Snes9x 1.43 on the PC
* Full quality 44KHz stereo sound
* Supports games in .smc, .sfc, .fig, and .1 formats, optionally in .zip files
* Super Scope support, touch screen to fire, touch off-screen to push Cursor button
* Mouse Support, see Snes9x EX section on website for instructions
* Configurable on-screen multi-touch controls & keyboard support (needs Android 2.1+ for multi-touch, up to 3 touches supported at once)
* Multiplayer-capable Wiimote + Classic Controller and iControlPad support (no need to purchase a separate app)
* Backup memory and save state support, auto-save and ten manual slots for save states. State files from Snes9x 1.43 should work on Snes9x EX and vice-versa.
* Portrait/Landscape auto-orientation support
Snes9x EX v1.4.31 Changelog:
* Fixed a bug when using auto-frameskip that could cause a game to pause itself until toggling the menu
* Fixed visual glitch in boolean menu options causing on/off text to appear instead of the real values (Language switch in NGP.emu, Unibios mode switch in NEO.emu, etc.)
* Added sound buffer size option to control worst case audio latency. Lower values decrease sound lag but increase chance of audio skipping. Especially useful for making music/rhythm games more precise. Supported on Android 2.3+, iOS, & WebOS.
* MD: Fixed SMS input broken in 1.4.28
* GBA: Fixed missing iCade support in some builds
* GBA: Fixed graphics issues in Camelot games (Golden Sun, etc.) on Android & WebOS (seems to be a bad compile or undefined behavior in GBA-arm.cpp if -fexpensive-optimizations is used)
* GBA: Minor speed optimizations
* iOS: Enabled automatic file write permission fixing on GBA.emu as supported by the other systems
* iOS: Lowered average audio latency to 6-8 frames (about a 2x improvement)
* iOS & Android: Added a Hide Status Bar option to control if the top status bar on most non-tablet devices is visible, it can also be hidden only while in-game
* Android: Improved window calculation code to account for top toolbars bars like those on the Kindle Fire and prevent visual/input artifacts
* Android: Added a Java-based Bluetooth back-end as a fallback in case the native C one fails, allows devices that previously needed to use Bluez IME to work with the in-app Bluetooth support
* Android: Prompt user to enable Bluetooth automatically
* Android: Disabled OES_texture_npot on HTC Desire HD due to faulty OpenGL driver causing blank font rendering
* Android: Added an OpenSL ES audio back-end for improved performance and latency
* Android: Changed Android text input (for cheats in NES.emu) to use a native text widget for better compatibility with different input methods

Ready for another supposed look at the next-gen Apple iPhone? Matching up with previous leaks we'vereported on, the elongated iPhone body with a miniaturized docking port and brushed metal back has appeared again, this time courtesy of iLab Factory. While many of its parts look astoundingly similar to what we've already seen, this is the first time we've gotten a solid look at it fully assembled from all angles -- well, aside from the missing SIM card holder. While most of its all-important innards are clearly absent, this assembly does come complete with what appears to be the locking ribbons for the screen and home button. As always, grab the obligatory spoonful of sodium chloride, then check it out for yourself at the gallery and links below.

We know it didn't take much time for the Tenth iteration of that CM greatness to reach Google's popularNexus 7 and Samsung's most colossal Galaxy handset on the block, but one other Android big shot was still yet to join the "preview build" bash. The marvelous news is Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners can now also take part in the early adoption process, as CyanogenMod's Brint Kriebel has said via Mountain View's social network that CM10 for Big Red's GNex is out and up for grabs. That said, he's let it be known the goods aren't exactly fully baked, though he has been rockin' it as his "daily driver" for about two weeks -- which, needless to say, is quite a good sign. Those interested in going a step further can hit up bekit's Google+ page, where you'll find the rest of the underlying details.

While we found many features worth noting in our review of Windows Phone 7.5, one that was missing (and near to our hearts as people who review phones) was the ability to easily take screenshots on the devices. Thankfully, that issue appears to be resolved in Windows Phone 8, as WP7App.de has dug deep into the emulator (video evidence after the break) and confirmed the feature exists, enabled by clicking the Start and Camera button at the same time. That should make our lives easier and, for most, let them share snaps of their phone of choice's tile setup and inevitable autocorrect mistakes.

The modernised update of the first Final Fantasy game has finally made its way to Android.
The remake originally arrive on PSP with new visuals and improved gameplay, before being ported to iOS and later Windows Phone 7. Now Android bots can get in on the action. If you're a huge FF nut and looking for some good stuff on your phone, we recommend having a look at Final Fantasy Tactics on iOS- a turn-based strategy battle game that draws influence from Nintendo's brilliant Advance Wars series.
Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy and more recently The Last Story on Wii, has turned his attention to iOS development, confirming earlier this year that he's working on "three new games on iOS".

More than 115bn pages viewed on Opera Mini in June alone.
Norway-based Opera passed over 200 million mobile users of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile in June, with just 17m supplied by the latter platform.
Meanwhile, Mini users led the charge with over 115 billion page view in June 2012, a 55 per cent rise year-on-year.
The browser also served more than two billion megabytes of data, which would have translated into more than 20 petabytes if not for Mini's data compression tech.
Opera notes that developing market African mobile owners now use their devices as the most common means of web access.
36 countries across the continent doubled Opera Mini usage across one year, while use in Côte d’Ivoire rose 600 per cent year-on-year, with page views spiking 744 per cent, and data growing 760 per cent.

Speculation grows – and could push the mini-blog's value past $10bn.
The New York Times believes Apple execs are in talks to invest in Twitter – a social network that still loses money, despite more than 150m users.
Twitter was valued as $8.4 billion last year, and the sources reckon funding from Apple could drive the valuation past $10bn.
Observers suggest Apple needs to do more in social, noting that CEO Tim Cook recently said: "Apple doesn’t have to own a social network. But does Apple need to be social? Yes."
Of course, Apple does own a social network in the form of Ping.
However, the music-focused portal on iTunes has failed to make much of a dent in the domination of Facebook and Twitter.

Mountain Lion is the most successful OS X release in Apple’s history.
“Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
The price tag proved appealing to consumers, especially those looking to upgrade. Users with Lion or Snow Leopard can upgrade to Mountain Lion by downloading it through the Mac App Store for just $19.99.
Mountain Lion boasts over 200 new features including iCloud integration, AirPlay Mirroring, system-wide sharing, and eventually Facebook Integration – which will become available in an upcoming update to the software

Freemium model will force changes to conventional games in future, says David McCarthy
Mobile developers must embrace free-to-play to succeed, according to Japanese mobile gaming service Gree.
The publisher's head of EMEA developer relations, David McCarthy, made the assertion at a UKIE-backed event last week.
“It requires a very, very different mind-set and business model to conventional boxed product gaming. The decision on whether to go free-to-play, certainly on mobile, is dead,” he said.
“There’s no argument – free-to-play is the model that the industry is moving towards. If you look at the [games in the] top grossing charts the vast majority of them are free-to-play, and it’s very few people who can make pay-per-download work as well for them as free-to-play in the mobile space.”
Gree now has over 23m users in its home country of Japan, and since its acquisition of mobile social platform OpenFeint it now claims to reach over 200m users worldwide.

Instead of rock-hard bubble gum that loses its flavor after 2 minutes, this gumball machine delivers apps and games directly to your smartphone.
The communications protocol used by this app-delivering gumball machine isn’t bluetooth or WiFi but near field communication. This protocol allows for a point-to-point network between the app dispenser and a phone to deliver games, music, videos, and ebooks to any compatible portable device.
The hardware for the gumball machine is a Galaxy Tab, an Adafruit NFC shield, two Arduinos, and a few switches and other components stuffed into an old gumball machine. To get purchase an app, just put a quarter or two in the machine, turn the crank, and put your phone up against the dispenser. Through the magic of near field communications, you phone or tablet receives whatever media you purchased.
Near field communication has been a standard for a while, but hasn’t been available in most phones. With oracles of Apple speculating the upcoming iPhone will have NFC capability other phone manufacturers are sure to pick up the tech. Very cool project, and we can’t wait to see some truly home-brew versions of this build.

Fans of Samsung's Duos phones wanting 2012 updates have had to make do with last year's looks so far. From what's surfacing through multiple Indian sites, though, Samsung must want to spread some of theGalaxy S III's modern, nature-influenced style to the Duos' twin-SIM audience. The Galaxy S Duos S7562 won't make its bigger sibling jealous with a 4-inch WVGA display, a 1GHz SnapdragonMSM7227A chip or 512MB of RAM, but they're not the point. As always, the highlight is that pair of SIM slots for carrying both home and work phone lines -- or simply mixing and matching prepaid plans. The rest of the hardware falls in line with what's likely to be a much less expensive smartphone, including a 5-megapixel back camera, a VGA front camera and 4GB of storage. Buyers will be glad to know that Android 4.0 should still be coming along for the ride in addition to that stone-inspired look. We've asked Samsung for more official details; there's talk of an Indian launch before the end of the summer, which (if true) could give the crowds in Bangalore and Mumbai more to look forward to in the fall than just cooler temperatures.

Its brief, mandatory appearance at the FCC a couple of weeks ago certainly let us know it'd be ready to take anyone's cash sooner rather than later, and surely enough, the 97 Carbon's now making itself available to all. Just as we'd heard, Archos is pricing the Ice Cream Sandwich slate at $250, though the company's currently running a deal where it's parting ways with the Elements slab for $20 less than MSRP -- naturally, this is a "limited time only" offer, and thus it could change at any given moment. Either way, that amount of greenbacks snags you an eye-pleasing 9.7-inch, IPS display with a run-of-the-mill 1GHz, single-core CPU and 16GB of built-in storage. Obviously the spotlight's still shining high onGoogle's Nexus 7, so we're interested to find out how many of you think this is enough to make you look past the Jelly Bean sweets -- do let us know in the comments below.

Apple's plans for its next iPhone refresh may be getting very tangible, very quickly. It all started wheniMore heard that Apple was preparing to hold an event unveiling the new hardware on September 12th, with a launch the following week on September 21st. Although the relative newcomer to the iPhone release date rumor game is still building its track record, that claim may have just gotten some extra meat: AllThingsD is joining in the chorus and touts its own sources pointing to an event in the same timeframe. While it's almost a month earlier in the year than Apple's iPhone 4S event was in 2011, it's supported by an Apple filing with the SEC showing a sharp uptick in supply purchasing during the spring, which it would need to start production for the fall. All of it is still rumor, of course, but past experience suggests that iOS fans may want to plan any September camping trips for the Apple Store line late in the month, not Labor Day weekend.
Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, who's well-known for his accurate one-word confirmations and denials of rumors, just posted his trademark "yep."

If you thought the Apple and Samsung legal tussles weren't getting interesting enough, another filing has revealed that the father of all smartphones Galaxy has at least two Windows Phone 8 devices in the pipeline. According to the filing that's been unearthed by The Verge, both are running on a dual-core 1.5Ghz Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset -- which is currently Samsung's chip of choice for LTE regions. The Odyssey looks set to be Samsung's high-end Windows Phone, with a 4.65-inch high-definition Super AMOLED display and NFC ready for Microsoft's own mobile payment plans. Meanwhile, the Marco will apparently forego the near-field delights and house a humbler 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen, for a presumably gentler price. According to the legal documents, both devices are gearing up to launch in Q4 of this year -- after we've seen Windows Phone 8 in its entirety.

Second quarter data shows Google OS losing momentum in shipments and market-share
The analyst firm Strategy Analytics believes that Google's Android mobile OS is nearing the "peak" of its popularity.
New data for the US market in the second quarter of 2012 - reported by TechCrunch - shows Android slipping in both millions of units shipped and overall market-share.
Android phones shipped 13.4 million units in the US in the second-quarter, significantly down from the 15.3 million shipped in the same quarter last year. As a result, Android's market-share fell from 60.6 per cent to 56.3 per cent.
Google's OS, which is supported by a wide range of mobile devices, still has the controlling share of the US market, but while its hold appears to be slipping Apple's iOS is on the rise: shipments of iOS devices increased from 5.9 million to 7.9 million, and its market-share grew from 23.2 per cent to 33.2 per cent.
The problem for Google is that, while companies like Samsung are producing very popular Android devices, Apple is apparently poised to launch a new iPhone in the near future. The resulting increase in demand for iOS devices could prove decisive.
"Android's...market share is approaching a peak and Apple iOS has been gaining ground," said Strategy Analytics' executive director Neil Mawston said in a statement. "Apple is rumoured to be launching a new iPhone in the coming weeks, and that event, if it takes place, is going to heap even more pressure on Android in its home market."

Will the new Ouya game console have at least one shmup? Oh, yeah. Indiana-based developer Rapture Game Studios plans to put its first game, the horizontal scrolling shooter Gunblitz, on the diminutive Android console in March.
Before that console is finally Kickstarted into existence, Rapture plans to putGunblitz on regular-sized PCs in September. Rapture has already released ademo of this PC version – thereby anticipating the pseudo-free-to-play model of the Ouya, and letting you try the game out.

Naturally, both the 'Odyssey' and 'Marco' devices will cross the firm's token four-inch 'superphone' screen size.
Huggy Bear once said, "I lay it out for y'all to play it out." That's exactly what a Californian court has been charged with doing for the ongoing patent war between Apple and Samsung.
The new lawsuit, which started yesterday, has already yielded news that Samsung is working on a 11.8-inch retina display tablet.
Seemingly, the Korean OEM is unsatisfied with its Android dominance, and yearns for a Microsoft OS stronghold, as The Vergeclaims Samsung is also working on at least two Windows Phone 8 smartphones.
The Qualcomm-powered devices, codenamed 'Odyssey' and 'Marco', will sport dual-core processors and LTE capabilities.
Meanwhile, the former will come with a 4.65-inch AMOLED HD display, an 8MP rear camera and NFC functionality, while the latter will boast a more modest four-inch screen, with a 5MP rear camera.

Rumours indicate that the iPhone 5 and possibly the iPad Mini will be released on September 21st.
iMore has reported that sources have confirmed the date for the iPhone’s release, with the announcement taking place nine days before on September 12th.
This site also states that, although a date isn’t confirmed for its announcement, the iPad Mini will also see a September 21st release.
Although there has been no official announcement from Apple, other sites including The Loop, and a Wall Street Journalpublication AllThingsD have confirmed that they have received the same information on the release dates.
The iPhone 5 is rumoured to have a 4-inch retina display screen, a smaller charging port and a repositioned earphone port.
According to the rumours, the iPad Mini will feature a 7.85-inch screen with the same retina display as the New iPad. Another rumour is that the iPad Mini will come with a stylus pen. I personally can’t see this happening with an Apple product. Ever.
If the September 21st date is correct, we will see the iPhone 5 launch just 11 months after Apple’s last smartphone, the iPhone 4S.
