Among the dozen or so games strewn about New York City's Museum of Modern Art (during last week's Kill Screen-curated "Arcade" event) two titles had their playable debuts: Eric Zimmerman and Nathalie Pozzi's "Starry Heavens" ("a physical game of power and betrayal"), as well as Matt Boch and Ryan Challinor's "Pxl Pushr" ("something akin to a full-bodied theremin blended with a puzzle game"). Considering what the two freshman entries were up against -- critically acclaimed games like Limbo, Canabalt, and Echochrome -- it was impressive that both games had lengthy lines throughout the evening.
I mean no offense when I say this, but Pxl Pusher looks like what would've happened if Kinect technology had existed in the Coleco Vision days. In the same way that your Dad's sweet 1973 Lacoste track jacket still looks totally rad, so does Pxl Pushr. The bizarre look is both a measure of the dev duo's style -- their day jobs are as designers at Harmonix -- and of the short-term development cycle. "Over the past four weeks-ish we've been messing around building this game," Boch explained.
In Pxl Pushr, one player places dots on an iPad, while another player attempts to catch as many dots as possible by using the contortions of their body (via Kinect). The player contorting their body is scored on how many pixels he/she is able to "push" versus the ones they miss. It's a simple concept for sure, but one that had many attendees smiling while making very silly poses. Not that the crowd's reaction was foreign to Boch and Challinor, two gentlemen who spend their working hours with Dance Central 2.

iMAME4all is a iOS universal app done by David Valdeita (Seleuco), port of MAME 0.37b5 emulator by Nicola Salmoria & TEAM for all jailbroken iOS devices (iPad HD, iPhone 4G , iPod touch and older) and it is based on GP2X, WIZ MAME4ALL 2.5 by Franxis.
It emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.37b5 plus some additional games from newer MAME versions.
This version emulates over 2000 different romsets.
Please, try to understand that that with that amount of games, some will run better than others and some might not even run with iMAME4all. Please, don´t email me asking for a specific game to run.
Although the performance is very good with modern devices (all games I tested on iPad run practically perfect), owners of older devices should not expect a good performance; please turn off sound because that's very helpful.
After installing, place your MAME-titled zipped roms in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all/roms folder.
Please use "clrmame.dat" file included in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in next webpage:
http://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/
I am releasing everything for free, in keeping with the licensing MAME terms, which is free for non-commercial use only. This is strictly something I made because I wanted to play with it and have the skills to make it so. That said, if you are thinking on ways to support my development I suggest you to check my other free works for the community.
Other projects from author:
http://code.google.com/p/xpectrum
Version 1.8 beta: iMAME4all 1.8.B (Added analog touch stick, stick 2/4/8-way restrictors, stereo support, sound going out of sync fixed, fixed jerky gameplay and more...)

MD.emu is a commercial port of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System/Mark III emulator Genesis Plus (GPL) for Android.
Quote:
Play all your favorite Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System/Mark III games
Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System/Mark III emulator based on Genesis Plus (GPL), designed and tested on the original Droid/Milestone and the Xoom, but works on many devices with similar specs. While not currently as fast as some other Genesis apps available (performance is similar my SNES app depending on the game), MD.emu features very accurate emulation is able to properly display graphics in many games other apps do not. Examples include Panorama Cotton, Star Control, and the VS mode in Sonic 2. My goal for future updates is to eventually provide Sega CD support.
Other features include:
Very accurate sound emulation with high quality re-sampling
SVP chip support for Virtua Racing (needs a fast device)
6-button controller and 4-player multitap support
Backup memory and save state support, auto-save and ten manual slots for save states.
Supports ROM-based games in .bin, .smd, and .sms formats, optionally in zip files
Configurable on-screen multi-touch controls in addition to keyboard controls (needs Android 2.1+ for multi-touch, up to 3 touches supported at once)
Multiplayer-capable Wiimote + Classic Controller and iControlPad support (no need to purchase a separate app, see website for full instructions)

Thought Android was killing it in the US? Try the rest of planet Earth, bud. The latest from our friends at Canalys has Google's mobile OS on 48 percent of smartphones worldwide, or nearly one out of every two sold. Mountain View's stratospheric rise came at someone's expense, and it looks like Nokia's the loser here folks, which corroborates the data from last week's IDC report. Espoo's foibles are troublesome in a market that grew 73 percent year over year, especially when Samsung shipped 421 percent more handsets than it did a year ago. As a result, the Korean company has surpassed Nokia in smartphone marketshare, just like its rival in Cupertino. Despite the rampant growth, the research firm suspects Sammy could have done better, noting that it had failed to capitalize on Nokia's "weakened state around the world" with its "global scale and channel reach." We'll see if Samsung takes Canalys' constructive criticism to heart in Q3, but while you wait, you can read the full report after the jump.

A native Skype app for the iPad has finally appeared, opening up your Apple slate for voice and video chatting with others on Macs, PCs or even TVs. It's not listed as an update to the existing iOS app, but as a separate Skype for iPad download that's only shown up in certain countries so far -- at first we couldn't find it on the US iTunes but it finally appeared after some searching. Just like Skype for iPhone, everything works over both WiFi and 3G, but one key difference is the ability to instant message during video calls. Check after the break for the full release notes and the demo video that leaked in June.
Update: So, we've just taken the app for a quick spin via a 3G to WiFi call and it's laid out very nicely -- maintaining the familiarity of its desktop client. Getting a video chat started was quick with acceptably clean audio and mostly consistent video streaming (aside from an occasional freeze-frame). Whether you're in landscape or portrait mode there's access to recent conversations, and you can even start conversations within your current chat; we'd say that the former works out better for getting around, although it does make it hard to stay in frame. Overall it feels like a souped-up version of the iPhone release, and impressions aside, the gallery down below should give you a better look at what to expect.
Update 2: Just as suddenly as it appeared, it has now been yanked from iTunes stores everywhere. A Tweet from the official account says it went live "prematurely" -- your guess is as good as ours as to when it will return.

MobileMe's impending demise just got one step closer, folks. Apple's updated iCloud.com to now sport an official login page with what we're assuming is Cupertino's rendition of a CNC-machined aluminum unibody badge. It looks like those of you rocking iOS 5 or OS X 10.7.2 and who've also created an iCloud account are probably already busy frolicking through email, editing contacts and slinging calendar events all from the comfort of your browser. Those services already existed under its predecessor, but it looks as if Cupertino has spruced 'em up with fresh paint jobs. A screenshot from MacRumors also shows the addition of an iWork section, which we'd surmise means the previously siloed iWork beta now has a new place to call home. We couldn't get past the migration step with our trusty MobileMe account (disappointing proof is after the break), but you're more than welcome to tap the more coverage link and have a go yourself.

How to get a hefty new hard drive for your Mac without making your other gadgets jealous? Iomega is offering up a solution with the fairly elegant Mac Companion Hard Drive, a two or three terabyte external drive designed with Apple computers in mind that adds a high-powered charging port for your peripherals. The drive also packs additional USB and FireWire ports (no Thunderbolt, guys?), plus a set of four LEDs, which let you know how full it is with a glance. The drives are available via Apple at $195 and $295, for 2TB and 3TB, respectively.

Mobile malware is nothing new, especially for Android users who have trained themselves to navigate the sometimes shady back alleys of the Market. The fine folks at CA Technologies came across an interesting new trojan though, that does something slightly more unnerving than max out your credit cards -- it records your conversations. There's no evidence that this has actually found its way into the wild yet, but it's entirely possible that some nefarious developer could capture your calls and upload them to a remote server. Obviously, this wouldn't hold much interest for your traditional cyber crook, but suspicious significant others and corporate spies could have a field day with such capabilities. All we can do is suggest you remain vigilant and maintain a healthy dose of paranoia about any apps on your phone.

It's perhaps no surprise given that OpenFeint faces more competition on iOS - specifically Apple's Game Center - but the company has added to 700 Android games some new social features that won't reach iOS until the autumn. The new additions are aimed at increasing player engagement, and include status updates and message walls. OpenFeint's Ethan Fassett said: "Free-to-play games require an engaged social graph to succeed. With new features like these going every couple of weeks, OpenFeint is rapidly activating its userbase for game developers.

We make our own truth. That's how IDC can come up with roughly the same numbers as fellow research firm Canalys and crown Apple the king, when its rival called Android top dog -- it's all about how you slice it. See, where as Canalys bundled all Android handset makers together, IDC has broken them up, which leads to a rather interesting twist -- the largest smartphone maker in the world is now Apple. Cupertino's growth of 141.7-percent in shipments year over year was enough to push it past Nokia (which slipped to number three) and Samsung (which climbed two spots to take the silver medal), while RIM and HTC rounded out the top five. That being said, no one is running away with the lead here, and Sammy's continued stratospheric rise should keep Apple on guard. Check out the full report after the break.

Google has updated its stable channel for Chromebooks (Acer AC700, Samsung Series 5, and Cr-48). The latest version of Google chrome running on these devices is Chrome 13. The feature has added Google Cloud Print settings to Settings > Under the Hood. It now allows auto-connect using 3G, remove/forget added VPN connections and 802.1x support. The update brings the most needed feature — USB mounting of Android.

Time Warner is bringing its HBO Go video-on-demand service to consoles and smart TVs.
According to a report on Gigaom, the move was revealed by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes in an earnings call following the company's second quarter financial results.
HBO Go was launched early in 2010 as a browser-based service for films and HBO's back-catalogue of TV series, with apps for iPhone, iPad and Android following in April this year.
Time Warner claims that the apps have been downloaded 4 million times, and HBO Go users generally watch more content than those who only use the TV network.
Streaming film and television content is a significant growth area on consoles, with Netflix, in particular, enjoying great success on all three platforms.
A Nielsen study released last month indicated that 50 per cent of Netflix users accessed its content through a console. The Wii supports 1.5 million Netflix users in the U.S. every day.

It's that time of the month again, over at Apple. You know, iOS 5 beta refresh time. Just over two weeks ago, the old Apple released its latest build, and now iOS 5 beta 5 is ready for devs to download. We've yet to get the dirt on what this version will bring, but we're downloading it now, and will let you know if any juicy bits float to the top. If you've already got it going, let us know what you see in the comments below.
Update: Strangely, the beta 5 release notes mention the possibility of multiple iCloud accounts, but we're not entirely certain how that will work, or whether or not it will make it to the final release.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/06/i...ding-pleasure/

The FBI has just released its very first mobile app, aimed at helping parents deal with their worst nightmare -- a missing child. Known as Child ID, the application allows users to store their kid's photos and identifying information directly on their handsets, making it easier to provide authorities with vital data whenever the little one disappears. Parents can also use the tool to dial 911 or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with the tap of a button, and can instantly e-mail their child's details to law enforcement officials, thanks to a dedicated tab. Of course, some may feel uncomfortable with keeping such personal information stored on a smartphone, but the Bureau insists that none of the data will be collected or shared without authorization -- and they're pretty good at keeping secrets. For now, Child ID is available only for iPhone, though the FBI plans to expand it to other mobile devices in the near future. Interested iOS users can download it for themselves, at the iTunes link below.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/f...ssing-childre/

Defcon 2011 is in full hacking swing, and Itzhak Avraham -- "Zuk" for short -- and his company Zimperium have unveiled the Android Network Toolkit for easy hacking on the go. Need to find vulnerabilities on devices using nearby networks? The app, dubbed "Anti" for short, allows you to simply push a button to do things like search a WiFi network for potential targets, or even take control of a PC trojan-style. To do this, it seeks out weak spots in older software using known exploits, which means you may want to upgrade before hitting up public WiFi. According to Forbes, it's much like Firesheep, and Zuk refers to Anti as a "penetration tool for the masses." Apparently, his end-goal is to simplify "advanced" hacking and put it within pocket's reach, but he also hopes it'll be used mostly for good. Anti should be available via the Android Market this week for free, alongside a $10 "corporate upgrade." Consider yourself warned.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/android-network-toolkit-lets-you-exploit-local-machines-at-the-p/

It was all the way back in October of 2010 that a few ingenious devs jailbroke the second gen Apple TV. Since then, we've seen a weather app, web browser, and finally a port of XBMC, but there hasn't been much progress getting apps up and running. Well, today's news doesn't bring us any closer to playing Cut the Rope on Apple's "hobby" but it does show that HTML5 is a viable option for getting games on the tiny media streamer. The fairly bare-bones Blackjack game isn't going to wow anyone with its graphical prowess or stun with a deep level of interactivity, but it's certainly a worthwhile proof of concept. While you wait for internet poker and online gambling to come to the little black box, check out the video after the break.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/jailbroken-apple-tv-plays-html5-blackjack-ios-gambling-rings-ca/

Chinese smugglers turned to a rather low-tech method for getting a pile of decidedly high-tech iPads and iPhones across the border to Shenzhen, in a scheme to make money off of regional tax differences. The unsanctioned exporters fired a slingshot from a high-rise in Shenzen, dragging a zip line down to a small house just across the Sha Tau Kok river in Hong Kong. They then sent canvas bags loaded with the gadgets flying through the night sky along the projectile-placed cable -- at least until authorities spotted the gear hurtling through the air, that is. Police recovered about $46,000 worth of Apple products (and four culprits) when they discovered the end of the 300-meter line. Check out the video below for a little Chinese-language news coverage of the story and a glimpse an the simple, but ingenious, smuggling rig.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/s...-into-hong-ko/

The patent system is certainly complex, especially when it comes to smartphones. The Financial Times estimates that as many as 250,000 patents are at stake in a smartphone. Industry titans like Microsoft, Nokia, and Apple have tens of thousands of patents each, but Google's portfolio is reportedly on the low end — 'under 1,000.' Taking advantage of the opportunity, Apple has its patent strategy aimed squarely at the number one rival to its iOS mobile operating system, Android, which is now embedded in 40 percent of all U.S. smartphones compared to Apple's 26.6 percent. Apple's lawyers have been aggressively suing Android manufacturers HTC and Samsung for various technologies, from the 'look and feel' to how it connects to broadband networks. A recently published article takes a deep dive into the lawsuits' possible outcomes and their effect on end users.

Not to long ago I adopted a method created by Maister into the genplus emulator that allows for real time rewinding (think Prince of Persia or Braid). The method is somewhat like video compression P-Frames where you store the diff of the last frame. Emulators like FCEU use state saving to disk to pull this off which is very expensive. The individual state frames are often large ranging anywhere from 75Kb to 300Kb. This method of storing the diffs in memory allows us to provide almost 30 seconds of rewind (varies depending on the game). You can do the math to get a rough estimate how much space 30 seconds at 60fps worth of frames would take in its raw form. The only real performance hit is the serialization and unserialization of the state itself, this proves fairly negligible. This is really just a for fun feature it is however neat none the less.
See a video here:

The Kinect has been hacked for many purposes, but this Android implementation tutorial is the first we’ve heard of it being used on a mobile phone platform. Although not a finished product at this point, [Raymond's] tutorial is a good starting point for those wanting to experiment with fusing these two technologies.
The Kinect programming for this tutorial has been done with the Tegra Ventana development kit for Android 3.0. An Ubuntu-Linux installation is used, but this technique should be portable to any Linux system according to the author.
The procedure given is pretty straightforward, and the author even provides an example of the results in a video after the break. It’s interesting to note that, when connected, the Kinect is seen as two devices, “Xbox NUI Camera” and “Xbox NUI audio”. We look forward to new hacks to come out for this device, possibly using this set of tools

Stoobalou writes with an interview in Thinq with a few folks from ARM on their plans for the future of embedded graphics. From the article:"'If you're looking at the visual experience that we can deliver on a mobile, in terms of the capabilities of the devices that are on the market today, increasingly it is visually outstanding — but we need to do more maths, because we have an increasing screen resolution and we have increasing content complexity, and we have to do it all in pretty low power. So, if we look at where we were a few years ago, if you take the benchmarks of a VGA display and typical low-res content — all of a sudden, by the time you get to a 4K screen and some of the complexity of tesselated stuff you see in DX11 today, you're talking about a 500x increase in performance.' ... 'We're still maintaining that 1W power envelope within your mobile device, yet being expected to deliver 500 times the performance,' Hickman added. That's a major undertaking, but one which the next generation of Mali processors will work towards.'All of the graphics development in the embedded world is nice, but it is disheartening to see the lack of source code for all of the new mobile GPUs.http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/08...form-of-Choice

N900 owners have been able to press their Sixaxis controllers into service on their handsets for quite sometime, but Android tablets have been stubbornly stuck to a USB tether. That is, until now. Dancing Pixel Studios' Sixaxis Controller app for Android does exactly what you expect -- allows you wirelessly control games on your Google-powered device with a PS3 gamepad. It's not the simplest setup on Earth. You'll need to be rooted, and before you can pair it with your phone or tablet you'll have to connect to a PC via USB and fire up the SixaxisPairTool. The app also doesn't play nice with most HTC devices or newer Samsung ones. Thankfully, before you drop your hard-earned $1.67 on the app you can download the free Sixaxis Compatibility Checker. Don't miss the video after the break, and hit up the source links to download both now and make pulling off a hadouken that much easier.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/09/sixaxis-controller-android-app-makes-firing-off-hadoukens-easy-a/

According to Pocket Gamer, EA's taking a scattershot approach to succeeding on the iOS platform with two of its recently revealed upcoming releases. The first isBattlefield 3, which EA wasn't keen to share any details about -- though the safe bet is that the game will resemble the iOS version of the series' last installment,Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The second is Theme Park, a new version of the 1994 amusement park management sim which is absolutely nothing like Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
No release details beyond "later this year" were given to Pocket Gamer, though both titles will be playable on the show floor of Gamescom next week. We can't wait to fluidly switch between the two, heating up our blood with a round of evildoer-shooting followed by a cool-off period in the Bouncy Castle.http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/ea-bringing-theme-park-battlefield-3-to-ios/

via http://www.emucr.com/2011/08/imame4all-v180-2.html
iMAME4all v1.8.0-2 is released. iMAME4all is a iOS universal app done by David Valdeita (Seleuco), port of MAME 0.37b5 emulator by Nicola Salmoria & TEAM for all jailbroken iOS devices (iPad HD, iPhone 4G , iPod touch and older) and it is based on GP2X, WIZ MAME4ALL 2.5 by Franxis. It emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.37b5 plus some additional games from newer MAME versions.
iMAME4all v1.8.0-2 Changelog:
-> changes:
* Compiled with iOS4. Added iOS4 multitasking.
* Added a new analog touch control . Improves playability on digital games also. Lets play starwars and other roms using touch screen. Digital older one is selectable in options disabling the analog stick.
* Improves digital touch control also. keeps finger tracking and not overlap other touch controls when dragged.
* Added 8-4-2-way restrictor (selectable and saved in per game options).
A restrictor gate limits the joystick's range of motion. The most common reason to use a gate in an actual arcade setting is the retrofitting of an older machine that is not compatible with a new 8-way stick. A classic example of this is Pac-Man. The game was originally designed for a 4-way stick, and is programmed to respond only when a new input occurs. If the user is holding the stick in the down position, then suddenly makes a motion to move to the right, what often happens is that the stick first moves into the down-right diagonal, which the game does not recognize as new input since down is still being held. However, right is also now considered held, and when the user completes the motion to move right, it is also not a new input, and Pac-Man will still be moving down.
*new iPad control layout.
*bug fixes.
*changed load screens.
-> changes from Bryn Thomson
-some nice new icons
-new A SKIN
-> changes from Simon Quinn
* correct rate, stereo, fps from MAME engine are processes correctly by the AudioQueue sound functions and buffers.
* sound going out of sync fixed
* stereo support.
* multiple sound rates supported
* 44khz stereo seems to work well with most games on iPad 1.
* it seems to have fixed jerky gameplay, possibly it was the AudioUnit code causing that. Much smoother.

After just three months the OpenFeint powered gaming platform, The9 Game Zone, has published 60 games across 30 of China's app stores.
Western developers THQ, Glu Mobile, and Advanced Mobile Applications are all working with the network, a collaboration between open feint and Shanghai based The9, to distribute their games to a Chinese audience.
"The9 is an outstanding partner for game developers looking to enter the China market. With a presence in 30 app stores and a China-specific social network powered by OpenFeint, The9 Game Zone is a great platform to launch a game in China,” said AMA CEO Christian Guillemot.
The OpenFeint and The9 partnership also revealed more details of its Android Porting initiative, which funds selected developers in porting successful iOS games to Android. Those games are then localised for the Chinese market by The9.
Games selected included BulkyPix's Pix'n Love Rush and Babel Rising, and Deullo Games iSlash.
"We’re excited to work with The9 to bring two great iOS titles to Android in China. With over 60 live games already, The9 Game Zone is a proven launching pad for Western Game developers,” said BulkyPix CEO Olivier Pierre.
“With The9 Game Zone, game developers gain access to our strong China distribution network. We have strong marketing relationships with China’s three largest telecommunication service carriers, major handset manufacturers, and major third-party app distribution stores,” said Mr. Chris Shen, The9’s Vice President. “We are excited to work with these leading international game developers to introduce games to China.”
“With The9 Game Zone, game developers gain access to our strong China distribution network. We have strong marketing relationships with China’s three largest telecommunication service carriers, major handset manufacturers, and major third-party app distribution stores,” said added The9 VP Chris Shen.
Online gaming company The9 was founded in 1999 and previosuly held the license to publish World Of Warcraft in China.

Apple has won a significant victory in a series of legal cases against Samsung which is currently preventing the distribution of the company's Android-based Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe.
The action is based on an intellectual and design patent, rather than a technical or product patent, which claims that Samsung have imitated the iPad 2 to the point of illegality. Samsung is expected to appeal against the decision.
"It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," said an Apple spokesperson.
"This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas."
Apple is pursuing similar actions in the US, Asia and Australasia, but the current ruling, exempt in the Netherlands, takes immediate effect. Apple is also pursuing similar actions against other Android device manufacturers.
Generally, when such preliminary injunctions are granted, it means that the plaintiff has exhibited evidence which shows it is very likely to win a full case, reports Foss Patents.
The case could potentially have a knock-on effect for the tablet and smartphone market should the accusations of imitation gain further legal traction, but could still be settled out of court.

Well, that was anticlimactic. Viacom quickly sued Cablevision after the Optimum for iPad (now on iPhone and iPod Touch) app launched and allowed cable customers to stream the entire channel lineup on their tablets, but now they've resolved that and "an unrelated business matter". Viacom's case against Time Warner's similar offering is on hold while they also try to work out a deal, but Cablevision's stance from the start is that its approach fell within the existing agreements and they appear to have gotten their way. Just like most other channel carriage disputes, it was likely a deal on the supposedly unrelated issue that got things moving, but as long as we can keep watching Teen Mom in the kitchen, bathroom or out on the patio it doesn't really matter. Check the official statement from both companies after the break.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/cablevision-and-viacom-settle-lawsuit-over-live-tv-on-ipad/

A number of Android app developers have claimed that they are not receiving the correct amount of money for the number of apps that they have sold throught the Android Market. The common factor among the developers seems to be that all unaccounted for purchases were made through the Android Market's web store, with customers' credit cards apparently being charged through Google Checkout but the amount not making it to developers' accounts. Google responded officially via the Android Market support forum saying, "Thanks for posting and for your patience. We’re aware of the issue, and we’re working on fixing it. Once the fix goes out (soon!), orders should be moved to the correct state, which will enable disbursement amounts to be recovered. So if your July activity payouts were underpaid, you will be notified, and your September 1 payout will contain the missing amounts." At this time, no official date for a fix has been forthcoming, though Google has contacted affected developers by email

Apple may be hard at work creating the one phone to rule them all (around the world), if this latestpatent application is any indication. The filing, first submitted in April of last year, describes a software-based method of determining carrier rankings, allowing owners to browse through a database of network-specific features, such as voice and data, to determine their best fit and sign-up for service. Ideally, this future iPhone set-up would come courtesy of a truly global phone, packing all the necessary radios and software to surf along the globe's wireless frequencies sans extra SIM cards. Rumors of anopen handset have been circling Cupertino for a bit, much to the dismay of operators who fear the move would diminish their function as the industry's gatekeeper, shifting power to consumers. Certainly, Jobs and co. have a high hurdle to overcome if this purported world phone is to ever become a reality. In the meantime, why not just snag an unlocked device?http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/11/apples-carrier-ranking-patent-application-hints-at-global-iphon/

In an industry obsessed with polygon counts and frame rates, Nintendo's Wii console and DS handheld were the proverbial knives at a gunfight. They were grossly underpowered compared to the competition, meaning Nintendo could sell them at a profit from day one. Their innovative control methods ensured they still sold like hotcakes. An animated GIF of Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata holding a DS that printed money became the go to picture to run alongside quarterly announcements of Nintendo's gargantuan profits. If a disheveled man emerged from a time-traveling Delorian with tales of a near-future Nintendo struggling to sell its latest handheld, I'd have been more surprised about the Nintendo thing. Sowhat on earth happened?

A fake iPhone 5, inspired by the leaked images of the device, has been discovered to be on sale in China. The quality of the hiPhone 5 varies with the price, with the most premium version of the device being available for 800 yuan or Ł76. The device reportedly comes in red and pink. Chinese media is reporting that the fake iPhone 5 is thinner than the iPhone 4 and comes with round edges. Other reports are claiming that the device is extremely light and almost feels like that one is holding a plastic toy. The reports are likely based on some images that were leaked by the supply chain."Since they're going to the trouble of building counterfeit stores, the knock-off phones shouldn't surprise anyone.

August 12th, 2011, 00:17 Posted By: wraggster
A number of Japanese analysts have claimed Nintendo's failure to embrace the smartphone market illustrates "how behind the times they are".
Masamitsu Ohki, a fund manager at Tokyo-based Stats Investment Management, told Bloomberg: "Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry. Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new."
Nintendo affiliate the Pokemon Co. announced plans to release an official Pokemon game for iOS and Android devices back in July, boosting the platform holder's shares the most in almost four months, but the gains were soon surrendered when Nintendo said its strategy of developing software only for its own hardware "hasn't changed and won't change".
That led MF Global FXA Securities to say: "They just don't get it. Sell the stock, because a management once feted for creative out-of-box thinking have just shown how behind the times they are."
Following Nintendo's poor first quarter financial results, investors are also calling on the company to make better use of the over $10 billion in cash reserves it holds.
"Nintendo should aggressively make acquisitions or increase returns to its shareholders," said Tetsuro Ii, president of Tokyo-based Commons Asset Management, which held 2,200 Nintendo shares as of February. "It's management's task to consider how to make use of the cash."
Nintendo's last acquisition was the May 2007 purchase of Xenoblade developer Monolith Software.
Speaking last month, Nintendo's Iwata also dismissed the possibility of granting licenses for the company's intellectual property to outside firms. "It might be true that we could increase our short-term profit by granting licenses for our popular software assets in various ways. But what would happen to Nintendo's future if these assets were fully depleted by licensees?
"I could make such decisions if I were responsible only for our profits for this fiscal year. But, as I am also responsible for Nintendo's mid-to-long-term vision, we have to create special content which will not be easily depleted and preserve the value of such content to keep our business competitive."http://www.computerandvideogames.com/315046/nintendo-should-expand-to-mobiles-analysts/

Wow, has it really been a year a year since we first witnessed the arrival of SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a? It seems like only yesterday when everyone was first scrambling to describe the text message manipulating bit of Android malware. We've come along way and seen plenty of malicious bits of software since August 2010. Remember the porn-bundled SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.b trojan from October? Or how about the bible-packing Android.Smspacem? Relive all of the handset hijacking memories in the source link below.

If you like flying unicorns, you probably love giant flying unicorns, right? Well, the white iPhone 4 has officially gone from myth to reality, but it seems some folks are still chasing the dream in a BIG way. Case in point: iTableous, an outsized tabletop bearing a striking resemblance to the long-awaited iOS handset. Unlike previous iPhone tables we've seen, this one doesn't support multi-touch -- a wireless keyboard and mouse hold the keys to navigating this behemoth -- but it does offer 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 500GB of internal storage, a 5.7 megapixel camera, 720p video recording, as well USB, HDMI and a good old 30-pin connector for hooking up the real-deal. What's more, this iPhone's a dual-booter, capable of running Mac OSX 10.6.7 (via Hackintosh) and Windows 7 Professional. If you're living at the tip of a beanstalk and need to shake that tired old 3GS, check out the video of iTableous in action after the break.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/11/itableous-is-a-white-iphone-4-fit-for-a-giant-video/

The Lodsys saga continues; reader WyzrdX writes with this excerpt from Wired:"Google has intervened in an ongoing intellectual property dispute between smartphone application developers and a patent-holding firm, Wired.com has learned, marking the Mountain View company's first public move to defend Android coders from a patent troll lawsuit that's cast a pall on the community. The company says it filed a request with the United States Patent and Trademark office Friday for reexamination of two patents asserted by East Texas-based patent firm Lodsys. Google's request calls for the USPTO to assess whether or not the patents' claims are valid."

Don't want to pay Apple $199 to repair the cracked screen of the $199 iPhone you dropped? Neither, apparently, does Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. A patent application made public Thursday lists Bezos as an inventor of 'a system and method for protecting devices from impact damage,' which proposes using airbags, springs, and even a jet propulsion system to keep your iPhones, iPads, and other portable devices safe and out of the clutches of the Genius Bar. Let's hope there's an API — those gas cartridges could be a game-changer for fart apps!"

Engine02 is a script-driven, multiplatform 2D game engine with builds for DOS, Windows, Linux, Intel/PPC MacOSX, PSP, Wii, and GP2X Wiz.
Complete documentation for creating games is downloadable from within the interface in PC and Mac builds, and is also available on the website. A generic template from which to build new games is also available from the in-program downloads list, as well as an open example of fully-featured gameplay.
Games created or hosted by the author and his team are directly downloadable from inside the program. Updates for the program, or any installed game, can also be downloaded from the same interface when they become available.
What's New (v11.08.11)
View complete "What's New" document
Features
A new build is now available for the GP2X Wiz
New Script Commands (1440-1472, see index in "Functions" doc)
Manual opening/creation of and reading from or writing to data files, making possible demo recording/playback, game progress saving, custom data editing, etc
Load new Player Character data into any existing Player Character slot at any time during gameplay to allow many Character types in a single game without having to expend the RAM to store them all at once
Load a new set of Global Palette Colors from a PCX/TGA image file at any time during gameplay
(Re-)Obtain a Tile Map for a Tiled Level Object from anywhere on any existing Tile Plane at any time during gameplay
Save standard Level Layout and/or Tile Data to the files that were last loaded, or a new location specified by Script Text
The _SaveObjects Command now accepts a "Register" for the Text ID parameter
Modify or retrieve (for value testing) the contents of Game Text Strings, enabling visible entry and use of names, passwords, etc
The Tile Editor has been rearranged to make better use of available screen space, and updated for functionality
The tiny, hard-to-click arrows have been removed; click options are now activated by left- or right-clicking the option label or its displayed value
The entire 256-color palette is now available all at once
An option is now available to place a smaller, less-featured version of either the Tile Selector or Level Editor in the lower-right corner for more quickly selecting tiles from the list or the level layout, drawing to the level layout, and instantly viewing changes to the overall layout image while editing a tile
Palette entries can now be swapped within the editor for easily organizing colors in preparation for Palette Animation, or any other purpose
An "Alias" system has been added so that more-easily-memorizeable names can be used for Commands, Variables, settings, etc. in scripts instead of their internal ID numbers. Aliases for standard IDs are included and listed/used in the documentation, and users can modify them and/or add their own for game-specific IDs
Tile Animations can now be set up more quickly and easily by means of the new automatic Tile Animation frame insertion, which uses the Level Editor's Tile Plane section selection/copy feature
Shortcuts have been added to both the Tile Editor and Level Editor for filling either an entire Tile or all non-transparent pixels of a Tile with any of the four solidity types
Sprite Editor "Dumps" of Player Character Sprites will now save these changes directly to the selected Character's Character Def File by default. The external "frames.txt" dump is still available, and can be performed by instead holding Ctrl while pressing Enter
Sprite Editor "Dumps" of Object Sprites will now save these changes directly to the appropriate Object Def File by default (depending on which set the currently-selected sprite set resides in). The external "frames.txt" dump is still available, and can be performed by instead holding Ctrl while pressing Enter
When viewing Object Sprites in the Sprite Editor, the Status element that displays the currently-selected set number will now display the set's ID relative to the Object Def that loaded it, rather than its E02-internal ID (Ex: If there are 28 Game-global Object Sprite Sets, the final set's ID will be shown as "27G", while the first "Zone" set's ID will be shown as "0Z" rather than "28"). The same principle has also been applied to the "Ani ID" element
When viewing Player Character Sprites in the Sprite Editor, the Status element that displays the currently-selected "Animation Function" will now display the set's ID relative to the "Player Character Common Functions" list or the selected Player Character's "Character Specific Functions" list, rather than its E02-internal ID (Ex: If there are 33 Player Character Common Functions, the final Function will be shown as "32C", while the first Player Character's first "Character-Specific" Function ID will be shown as "0P" rather than "33"). Also, the selection will default to the Player Character's first "Character-Specific" Function, and "Character-Specific" Functions belonging to Player Characters other than the one that is currently selected will not be accessible
A new error message has been added to report when Sprite width and/or height are defined as 0 (or less) for both Player Character and Object Sprites, eliminating crashes due to such settings. Please use a 1x1 sprite that loads a single transparent pixel for "invisible" Sprites or Sprite Frames
Further optimizations have been made to level collision testing for both Players and Objects
Message system messages have been made easier to read; each string is now drawn with a background color rather than allowing the game/editor/interface screen to show through
On program startup, there is now a three-second delay on updates testing that provides time to cancel the connection attempt. Also, when pressing F8 to return to the main menu, the menu comes up immediately instead of again testing for updates first
The current FPS has been removed from the Level Editor's Status display, since the display toggled by F10 makes it redundant
Bugfixes
_???=TileInfo(???) commands were treating incoming position values as unsigned rather than signed, which caused negative values to read as extremely high positive values and fail to wrap around the level or looping section boundaries correctly, causing crashes due to out-of-bounds reads. This has been corrected; passing variables containing negative X and/or Y position values will now cause the position to be wrapped properly, eliminating the crash and returning the correct tile data
Sprite Editor "Dumps" would fail without displaying an error/warning if the "dump" folder didn't already exist in the currently-loaded game's Game Folder. These features now automatically create this folder when appropriate
"F" for vertically flipping a single Tile Frame in the Tile Editor wasn't working at all, and "M" for horizontally mirroring the current Tile Frame was only functioning on Frame 0 rather than the currently-selected Frame. Also, these features were not functioning correctly in the DOS build with a "vmode" setting greater than 2 (default is 3). These features now function the way they were intended
All TGA image dumps were output with a single incorrect byte setting in the header, causing them not to load properly or at all in the majority of image editors (except, conveniently, the one that was used for testing). This has been corrected, and TGA image dumps for screen shots, level maps, sprite editor dumps, etc. should now open properly in all editors that support 8bit indexed-color RLE-compressed TGA images

App developer Broken Thumbs has settled with the Federal Trade Commission in the US for breaking child privacy laws.
The developer of Emily's Girl World and related titles will now pay $50,000 for collecting "tens of thousands" of email addresses from children under the age of 13 without notifying their parents.
"The FTC’s COPPA Rule requires parental notice and consent before collecting children’s personal information online, whether through a website or a mobile app," said Chairman Jon Leibowitz. "Companies must give parents the opportunity to make smart choices when it comes to their children's sharing of information on smartphones."
The FTC also alleges that Broken Thumbs also allowed children to share personal information on message boards, again breaking the COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ) rule. Broken Thumbs will not be allowed to violate the rule again and all personal information is to be deleted.
Earlier this year Disney's Playdom social business settled with the FTC for a similar violation for $3 million.

iOS developer Future Games of London believes that a Freemium model can generate more revenue than paid apps.
The studio released its Hungry Shark series of games for free during a promotional period called "Shark Week", and reported a significant increase in profits.
"The success of the Freemium model leads us to believe that we will be moving away from paid apps completely," said managing director Ian Harper in a statement.
"By switching business model on Part 3 during Shark Week, we've traded 1000 downloads a day at $1 for 250,000 Daily Active Users that we can monetise through in-app purchases of optional upgrades."
The average in-app transaction on Hungry Shark is worth $3.26, making it one of the 50 highest grossing IPs in the App Store.
"Our revenue is also now correlated with DAU not daily downloads, which is great as DAU falls off much slower after a sales spike. We've also been able to give the whole game away for free and reach an audience 100 times larger, who we can also promote other products too."

Earlier this year, the Chinese firm Huawei unveiled IDEOS through Kenya's telecom titan, Safaricom. So far, this $80 smartphone has found its way into the hands of 350,000+ Kenyans, an impressive sales number in a country where 40% of the population lives on less than two dollars a day. The smartphone is the exemplar of a truly liberating device, and thanks to Android and Huawei, it has the potential to reach virtually untapped markets.

The injunction preventing Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 devices from being sold in Europe has been restricted to Germany, Bloomberg reports.
Apple was awarded an injunction against Samsung last week, on the grounds that its Galaxy tablet device infringed on an intellectual and design patent.
"It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," said Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huget at the time.
Initially, the injunction applied across Europe - except for the Netherlands - but the German court hasdecided to introduce limits on its "enforceability."
"There are doubts whether a German court has so a wide a jurisdiction over a company based in Korea," said German court spokesman Peter Schuetz.
Apple has engaged in patent disputes with several smartphone manufacturers that use Google's Android operating system, including HTC and Motorola.
Google's recent $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola was motivated by the company's extensive library of patents. Shortly after the deal was announced, Google CEO Larry Page published a blog post that accused Apple of "anti-competitive patent attacks."
Both the original injunction and the partial reprieve are temporary measures. The Dusseldorf Regional Court has scheduled a full hearing for 25 August, with a final decision expected within three weeks of that date.

Last year DirecTV started offering NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go access even to those who couldn't / wouldn't get their satellite packages, and it's upping the ante this year by bringing its slate of football games to the PlayStation 3. NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go is still a $50 add-on that adds HD streaming access on PCs and mobile devices, however this year there's also an app for the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Android tablets. PS3 owners can get in on the action either by adding the To-Go option or paying a flat $339.95 without DirecTV service. Of course, it's still interested in enticing people to switch to the dish by offering Sunday Ticket at no additional charge for new subscribers -- just ask fairy Deion Sanders after the break. No word on any apps for Boxee, Roku and the rest, but other new additions for the 2011 season (now that the lockout is resolved and it's actually happening) include a new four channel mix with larger cells for those late afternoon games, and integration with NFL.com Fantasy Football that lets viewers keep up with their scores and players right on the TV.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/17/directv-brings-nfl-sunday-ticket-to-android-tablets-and-the-ps3/

It popped up in private beta earlier this summer, but Slide's Photovine is now open to the public, available as a free download on Apple's iOS App Store. Surprisingly there's no Android app yet -- a curious move considering Google (Slide's parent company) isn't known to exclude its own mobile platform with new product rollouts. Huff Post went hands-on with the app, summing it up as "Instagram meets Piictu," also noting the bizarre exclusion of an option to add your Gmail contacts -- though youcan import your friends from Twitter and Facebook. It's probably safe to say that an Android app will be coming soon -- or perhaps some other indication that Google and Slide do in fact share the same roof -- but for now, iPhone owners can slide on down to the source link to get their photo sharing fix.

InfoWorld's Bob Lewis argues that while the iPad may be opening IT's eyes to a new way to encourage end-users to innovate new solutions for their organizations, that work will better be undertaken on the PC. 'When the subject is PCs, the answer is to lock 'em down and run everything in the data center. When the subject is iPads, the answer is that there's an app for that,' Lewis writes. 'Before you decide the iPad is your platform, though, consider the factors that favor the PC. First, it's a sunk cost. Second, it's more capable. And third, your end-users are already familiar with it. Which brings us to what's particularly sad about the end-user innovation situation: Until the iPad resurrected the subject, most IT organizations have actively discouraged it. It goes beyond locking down the devices so that end-users can't install software they might find helpful in their day-to-day work or might increase efficiency in their departments.'"

WebOS, where did things go wrong? One moment you're worth a "double-down" investment by HP valued at $1.2 billion, and the OS of choice for future tablets, computers and even printers; the next, you're discarded like yesterday's crusty old oatmeal. Today, HP announced -- among other things -- that it's chosen to discontinue operations for its webOS lineup, and that the company "will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward." So what does this all mean for the future of webOS? Have we seen the last of webOS? Join us past the break for our thoughts.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/editorial-engadget-on-hps-denial-of-webos-operations/

Since that whole Revue thing didn't go over so swimmingly, it looks like Logitech's going back to its accessory roots, with a manic hope that tablet add-ons are the future. The company just announced a fold-out keyboard for the iPad 2 that's pretty much what it sounds like: a keyboard split in two whose halves flip out and connect to form a full QWERTY. As you can see in those shots below, you can still use your magical, candy-colored Smart Cover when your iPad is docked. At $129.99, it's hardly a cheap doo-dad and frankly, we would have hoped for higher quality. In our brief hands-on, the keys felt unstable and stiff -- an ideal combination for anyone who thought their iPad needed more chintz. Pre-order it at the source link if you must, though you might do just as well gawking at our pics below.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/logitech-announces-130-fold-out-keyboard-for-the-ipad-we-go-ha/

Well, the Wall Street Journal's headline certainly isn't going to surprise you -- Apple Developing New iPad -- that has been a safe assumption since the iPad 2 was announced. Rumors are circulating though (some, for quite a while) that are painting an increasingly convincing picture of a Retina Display-equipped slate shipping in early 2012. Reports are in that suppliers have already received Q4 orders for parts that may eventually find their way into Apple's next tablet. Can we say for certain that the iPad 3will hit shelves in Q1 of next year sporting a 2048 x 1536 screen? No, but it's starting to look more and more likely.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/retina-display-equipped-ipad-3-looking-more-and-more-likely-for/

Well, it's been less than two weeks, and Apple's already pumping out another iOS 5 beta build. Those of you holding Apple developer credentials can now mosey on over to the source link below, and get your hands on iOS 5 beta 6. As you might expect, this slice of Apple pie brings with it new betas for iTunes, XCode, and Apple TV. As per usual, we'll keep our eyes out for anything noteworthy, but if you've already got the new build going, give us a holler in the comments below.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/ios-5-beta-6-fresh-out-of-the-oven-for-your-downloading-pleasure/

iPad 3 will reportedly launch early next year.
The Wall Street Journal (via Gizmodo) says the third iteration of the tablet will come with a high-res, 9.7 inch screen with a 2048x1536 display, a significant upgrade from the current model's 1024x768 resolution.
This is just a rumour at the moment, but it does line up with reports back in June that said both Samsung and LG were battling for the opportunity to produce a full HD screen for the iPad 3.http://www.computerandvideogames.com/316250/ipad-3-release-date-early-2012/

Following the devastation wrought by the recent Japanese earthquake, Apple has hooked the country's early warning system into iOS 5. The tectonically-volatile nation has the most sophisticated alarm in the world, delivering life-saving warnings seconds or minutes before disaster strikes. iOS users already had access to this functionality via apps like Yurekuru, but iOS 5 will bring it directly into the operating system. The service can be activated in the Notification Center settings pane, accompanied by a warning that the constant connection will deplete your battery faster -- a fair exchange if it saves your life.

Four months after unveiling the relatively bare bones W8, Sony Ericsson has now taken the wraps off yet another Walkman phone, known as the Live with Walkman. Powered by a 1GHz processor, this Android handset features a 3.2 inch, capacitive touchscreen (with somewhat disappointing HVGA resolution), a five megapixel AF shooter with 8x digital zoom, and a front-facing VGA camera capable of capturing HD video in 720p. The petite, Gingerbread-equipped device also packs a lackluster 320MB of RAM, provides up to 32GB of microSD storage, and offers either tri-band 3G support (HSPA+) at 850, 1900 and 2100MHZ, or dual-band 3G at 900 and 2100MHz, depending on the model. And, as you'd expect, Sony Ericsson has placed a special emphasis on the music phone's media capabilities, beefing it up with enhanced audio and Qriocity integration. The specs may not sound earth shattering, but we'll wait until we get pricing information before casting judgment. The Live with Walkman is slated to hit "selected markets" by Q4 of this year, but you can find more information in the full PR, after the break.

If you spent your weekend outside and away from the Internet, you might have missed the massive liquidation of HP TouchPads on Amazon, woot.com, WalMart, and the HP online store. Normally a $100 fully featured tablet is nothing to scoff at, but there is a catch: The HP TouchPad runs WebOS. WebOS is a fine operating system for a tablet, but it’s not Android. The folks at HacknMod.com posted a bounty for the first person to port Android to the HP TouchPad.
HacknMod is offering up $450 for a basic Android port and is looking for sponsors for the WiFi, Audio, Camera, and MultiTouch bounties. There’s a lot of discussion about the port on the XDA Developers and the RootsWiki forums if you’d like to get a bearing on how far along the project is. The TouchPad has already been rooted so there’s your starting point.
We’d like to throw our hat into the ring, but we missed out on the TouchPad fire sale. If anyone knows of an online shop where they’re still available, leave a message in the comments.

Here’s an Android headphone add-on so clean that most people won’t know you built it yourself. [Will Robertson] was unsatisfied with the stock headphones that came with his HTC phone, but didn’t want to lose the control interface when upgrading. He built this add-on that lets him control the Android music player.
He was inspired to do this after reading about the control interface in one of our previous features. That hack detailed how to add control based on the 4-conductor headphone jack, but didn’t see us through to a clean finished product. [Will] picked up where it left off by designing a sleek surface mount board that hosts a headphone jack and three tactile switches. A patch cable is soldered opposite the jack, making this work as a pass-through device. The icing on the cake is the shrink tubing that masks the fact that this is a diy dongle.
If you want to follow his lead, [Will] posted his EagleCAD design files and footprints for the components he used in the post linked at the top.

Gameloft believes all mobile platforms are created equally (as long as they work 14 hours a day, including weekends) and is putting a stop to iOS release segregation, according to Pocket Gamer. Gameloft plans to release all iOS titles universally, without special HD versions for iPad that can come out months after iPhone installments. In some cases Gameloft is bound by licensing to release a separate iPad version, but overall it will continue to release all games at the same time on both devices, a policy it began with April's Order and Chaos Online.
Gameloft's universal release policy could very well become the norm as developers tweak the finer aspects of iPad HD development, a prospect that makes our game-organization compulsions extremely pleased.

Apparently, the iOS hacking community is not working for the weekend, judging by the two days it took to crack Apple's latest beta wide open. Available as of this morning, the Sn0wbreeze 2.8 Beta 6 unlock tool can now give those of you with developer credentials jailbreak access to iOS 5 beta 6. From the looks of this release, the hack works on most iOS devices with the sole exception of the iPad 2. Already itching to get that custom firmware on your Ive-designed iSlabs? Then hit the source link below, and let us know how things turn out.

Right, as you may have noticed we have a new universal holder now - we decided to do this as the number of phones now appearing is too many to make custom clamps for them all.
In other news sales are still going crazy and we're planning ahead for Christmas already with 6000 extra units planned on top of the normal production!
We're also considering a coding competition for the iCP - see here: http://boards.openpandora.org/index....231#entry85231

The NPD Group has published research showing that Android continues to lead the mobile OS market in America.
The data indicates that Android phones represented 52 per cent of units sold in the second quarter of 2011. This shows significant growth over the 36 per cent first quarter market share indicated in a report by Gartner in May.
Apple's iOS grew marginally to 29 per cent, while Blackberry tumbled to 11 per cent, and Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile and webOS remained stagnant with 5 per cent each.
Ross Rubin, NPD's executive director of industry analysis, claims that Google's recent $12.5 billionacquisition of Motorola has "shifted the balance of power" in the patent battle currently playing out in the mobile OS market.
"Android's momentum has made for a large pie that is attractive to Motorola's Android rivals, even if they must compete with their operating system developer," he said.
"Much as it did in the feature phone market in the RAZR era, Motorola is experiencing increased competition from Samsung and LG in the smartphone market. Closer ties to the heart of Android can help inspire new paths to differentiation."
The report also suggests the burgeoning pre-paid smartphone market as a possible area for Android to grow even further.
"This was once a key segment for Motorola that the company has an opportunity to reclaim as prepaid carriers build their smartphone portfolios," Rubin said.

With the market flush with hot-selling tablet computers, it shouldn't bowl anyone over to learn that many users are taking the plunge and bringing their devices to the bathroom. According to a new survey published by Staples Advantage, the business-to-business division of Staples Inc., 35% of tablet users copped to using their iPad or other tablets while in the bathroom, while a whopping 78% of tablet users said they used their tablets while lying in bed. And in a data point sure to further damage techies' reputation for social skills, Staples Advantage also reported that 30% of tablet users said they used their tablets while at restaurants.

It is what it sounds like, kids. Logitech, clearly on a tablet accessories tear, just trotted out another toy for the iPad. This time, it's a suction cup joystick that sits on the screen, inviting people to gawk at you while you play Pac Man in Starbucks. As you can see in the photos, this isn't a ball-capped joystick so much as a laptop-style pointing stick masquerading as a retro controller. That nub has a flat, slick surface, and without much of an indentation or textured grip, it's easy for your finger to slip off. It'll go on sale next month for $19.99, an appropriate price for what will most likely be an impulse buy. For now, we've got video of it in action after the break.

Watch out AT&T and Verizon, it looks like there's an iPhone 5 hat-trick coming this fall. WSJ is reporting that the Apple smartphone will hit Sprint at the same time as those other two networks, bringing a well-needed boost to the carrier's shares in afternoon trading. We've heard mixed reports about an expected release date, but Wall Street Journal sources "familiar with the matter" are claiming that the phone will ship in mid-October. One source also stated that Sprint will begin carrying the iPhone 4 at the same time -- presumably with a price drop in tow. Adding Sprint's 52 million subscribers to the mix could bring the iPhone within reach of customers currently locked into contracts, family plans or corporate agreements with Sprint, making the move a huge win for both companies.

You could run entire websites based around nothing but Apple rumours. Indeed, folk actually do.
Picking the wheat from the chaff is a tough task when it comes to Apple, but now global news agency Reuters has come out with what it claims is reliable information about Apple’s 2011 plans for iPhone.
And as has been claimed elsewhere, it looks as if Apple is in fact preparing to launch two new iPhones before the year is out.
The most strategically interesting is the low-cost, 8GB version of the iPhone 4 that Apple will use to try and crack into emerging markets where more traditional manufacturers such as Nokia still dominate.
Apple is believed to already be in talks with Chinese carriers China Mobile and China Telecom about deals to get the handset into the hands of the public in that region.
The device is already at the manufacturing stage in South Korea
It is expected to arrive in September or October alongside its fully-fledged successor, the iPhone 5.
Reuters dismisses reports of a brand new design for the high-spec device, a move that many had claimed due to the rough start iPhone 4 had in its first few weeks on the market.
Instead it says that the handset may actually be an IPhone 4S, as aesthetically it is almost identical to the current model. The only differences are said to be a slightly larger screen and a modified antenna.
A low-price iPhone does indeed represent a change of tack for Apple, which is a company that has always shied away from budget. The biggest company in the world has proved that the public lust for premium is insatiable.
But with developed markets having embraced the iPhone so feverishly, it makes sense for Apple to target emerging markets going forwards.

The iOS version of Telltale's forthcoming Jurassic Park tie-in will be iPad 2 only, a spokesperson for the developer has confirmed to Eurogamer.
While its last release, Back to the Future, squeezed onto the original iPad, you'll need the latest iteration of Apple's tablet to enjoy its next effort.
The developer is "targeting" a 15th November launch for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. The iPad take will follow on a little later and, unlike its big screen counterparts, be an episodic release.
Jurassic Park is the second iOS game this week to be announced as iPad 2-only, following news thatthe forthcoming port of PC puzzler Machinarium won't run on older tech.http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...is-ipad-2-only

Mobile gaming network OpenFeint is launching a single sign-on system for social developers on iOS.
OpenFeint's OFUID is intended to replace Apple's UDID, which the company intends to phase out with the introduction of iOS5.
UDID afforded developers a range of benefits, like accessing a user's history, tracking their behaviour, and offering cross promotions. OFUID will carry similar benefits, and remove the need to create proprietary solutions.
"With the deprecation of UDID, social game developers need access to a universal method for identifying and delivering services to their users," said OpenFeint founder and CEO Jason Citron.
"Available to 115 million gamers at launch, OFUID will offer that reach and improve on it by giving users a way to share information with game developers, if they so choose."
OpenFeint will also introduce a supplementary programme that guarantees participating developers 1.5 new installs for every install of Game Channel - an app required for users who wish to enjoy the benefits of the single sign-on.
"Sign-on with OFUID is incredibly flexible and has been designed to reduce sign up friction for games," said added senior vice president of product Ethan Fassett.
"Developers will be able to make sign-on optional at first launch and can display it later if they choose. Game developers will also be able to incentivise the sign-on process, offering users rewards for signing in or setting up accounts."

Steve Jobs has stepped down from the position of CEO of Apple.
The decision was announced yesterday in an open letter released to the "Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community."
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," Jobs writes. "Unfortunately, that day has come."
Jobs named current COO Tim Cook as his successor, and requested that he be allowed to remain, "Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee."
Cook joined Apple in 1998, and was appointed to COO in 2005. He has been influential in streamlining the company's production processes and supply chain, closing factories and warehouses worldwide to significantly increase its profit margins.
"I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role," Jobs continues.
"I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you."
Since Jobs' return to Apple in 1998 he has been instrumental in its rapid growth, presiding over innovations like the iPod, the iPhone and the App Store, and kick-starting the burgeoning tablet market with the iPad.
Earlier this month, Apple briefly overtook Exxon as the most valuable company in the world. In May, it was named the world's biggest brand.

Christopher Williams writes that the success of HP's fire sale in unloading hundreds of thousands of TouchPads at heavily discounted prices may provide clues to other Apple competitors hoping to loosen the iPad's stranglehold on the tablet computing market. The main Google Android tablets, made by Samsung and Motorola, are pitched at around the same price point as the iPad but, put together with all the other Android tablets, it's estimated the iPad outsells them eight to one so 'the problem becomes circular: the user base is too small for app developers to invest in,' writes Williams, 'so users buy an iPad because there are more apps and the user base gets even smaller relative to Apple's.' According to Williams, Android tablet makers must find a way of breaking the cycle to avoid the TouchPad's fate. 'No doubt acutely aware of this is Amazon, which is rumored to be preparing to release an Android tablet this autumn,' writes Williams, adding that Amazon must price their 'iPad killer' at break-even or a loss to succeed. 'Its online retail empire and the Kindle brand mean Amazon has the marketing clout to take on the iPad, but on the evidence of HP's successful TouchPad sell off, the question is whether it has the courage to put its money on the line. '"

Allow us to extend our congratulations to Nicholas Allegra. He's more popularly known as Comex, the party responsible for crafting the infamous JailbreakMe and Spirittools that's given Apple so many headaches recently. Starting the week after next, he'll be officially wandering around 1 Infinite Loop as a bona fide intern. We're not terribly surprised, since the skill level needed to give iOS engineers a run for their money can be a highly valuable asset to the company; hiring someone with the know-how to spot vulnerabilities in Apple's OS would only serve to make the platform more secure. It wasn't mentioned how Allegra's talents will be utilized by Apple, but -- given the programmer's extensive history -- we can make a few educated guesses.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/jailbreakme-creator-comex-joins-apple-as-an-intern/

As we approach the rumored September or October launch date for the next batch of iPhones, the web's been spiced up with photos of alleged parts for an "N94" iPhone prototype. We've been rather skeptical about them until the above photos landed in our inbox, courtesy of our friends from uBreakiFix. A little while back we'd already heard from our other sources that the N94 is set to be a cheaper version of the current iPhone 4 (probably the 8GB iPhone 4 mentioned by Reuters last week), which would explain why all these components and cables look super familiar. The only notable difference here is the funny dot right next to the sensor location above the earpiece -- the dotted pattern is very much like that used by the microphone and the webcam LED indicator on Mac computers, but obviously the latter is more likely the case here.
That said, do bear in mind that according to the mark along the bottom of this part, we're apparently looking at an "EVT1" (Engineering Verification Test) piece from March 3rd 2011 (making it about three months older than the white N94 back covers that made the rounds last week, assuming they're legit). Additionally, when our sources last checked around June and July, the N94 had yet to hit the DVT stage, so it's hard to determine whether these parts will remain the same in the final design, or whether the N94 will even make it to the production line at all.
On the other hand, our sources pointed out that an elusive N97 device -- previously reported by the Wall Street Journal as a tiny iPhone -- had already reached "DVT" (Design Verification Test) stage back in June, though there's little information about it other than that it's been tested with various cellular technologies (though plagued by some bugs related to switching between specific frequencies back then), plus it may sport a camera module supplied by Sony, which was semi-confirmed by Howard Stringerhimself back in April. Whatever the N97 ends up being, hopefully we'll have something at least as slim as our little souvenir from Beijing.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/iphone-n94-prototypes-front-assembly-leaked-set-to-be-an-iphon/

[KaRMaN] sent us a piece from his blog on what to do with a busted iPhone (google translate). As many iPhone owners have found out, it does not take that much of a fall to render your shiny hand-held command center into a pile of shattered glass. Replacement parts and insurance are available so life goes on, but what else can you do?
One thing you could do if your screen split apart like [KaRMaN]‘s is remove the white LED back light strip from the device and reuse it. Once he removed the LED he had to repair a couple of traces but that is no big deal. Then the strip is probed to see how the individual LED’s are situated, in this case is 6 in series. The strip is hooked up to a 12v power source and now you have a small, but bright light for some midnight hacking.

Nokia temporarily closed its developer network after it was hacked and user information compromised. The company said members' personal information including dates of birth, email and Skype addresses may have been stolen, but that no credit card details were taken. "A database table containing developer forum members' email addresses has been accessed, by exploiting a vulnerability in the bulletin board software that allowed an SQL Injection attack," the company said. "Initially we believed that only a small number of these forum member records had been accessed, but further investigation has identified that the number is significantly larger.

[Evan Flint] and his wife use a lot of online recipes in the kitchen. Rather than printing them out, they bought an iPad as a cooking companion. But in their cramped kitchen he needed to find a place for the high-end hardware that is out-of-the-way yet accessible. Some head scratching and parts bin diving led to this under-cabinet iPod dock.
The dock itself is a cradle made out of sheet aluminum. After cutting to shape, [Evan] bent up the sides and bottom to center the iPad. Since this is not a permanent fixture he needed to make the cradle collapsible. He used a CAD program to design the base tray to let the cradle lay flat, while giving several options to the angle when it is in use. Once the cooking is done just fold it up and the drawer slides make for easy under-cabinet storage.
Because he doesn’t own the house he didn’t want to make permanent alterations to the cabinet. But he does lament the unfinished look of the drawer slides. We’d just grab some pre-finished oak crown molding from the home store and wrap the entire thing. The left-edge of molding could slide out with the cradle when in use.

Sure, Elgato already has an app that lets you stream TV to your iPad -- but that's only if they're being broadcast online. To pull in live TV over the air you'd need a TV-tuner, something that has, until now, been unavailable for Apple's popular slate. By the end of September that lack of broadcast television will become just a distant memory with the release of EyeTV Mobile, a Ł100 (about $163) dongle that connects to the iPad's proprietary port. The tuner will be able to pull in MPEG 2 streams over DVB-T, but won't work with DVB-T2 broadcasts like Freeview HD. Check out the source for more details.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/elgato-eyetv-mobile-dongle-brings-live-tv-to-the-ipad-2/

Enrolled in the iOS developer program and interested in iTunes Match? Better point that browser towards Apple's dev portal, as Cupertino's just flipped the switch for its upcoming music laundering service. There you'll find iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 with iTunes Match which'll let you sign up for a yearly $24.99 fee. Hopping on the bandwagon early has extra rewards too -- early birds get three months (on top of their yearly sub) for free. A tipster also provided us with a screencap (after the break) of his iPod touch running the current iOS beta, which now magically has a toggle for the service under the Music section of the Settings app. Taking the plunge? Let us know how you fare in the comments.
[Thanks, Matt]
Update: Looks like the initial signups have stopped, but Apple plans to expand the number of testers "over the next days." So, keep compulsively checking iTunes if you want in on the next round.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/itunes-match-goes-live-for-ios-developers/

Mobile game publisher Gameloft has announced a new subscription model for Android phones.
Gameloft Club will charge Ł0.99 per week in return for one game from Gameloft's back catalogue - a saving of 66 per cent on the publisher's normal prices.
The service is being tested in the UK, and is currently limited to Android HD+ devices. Gameloft is offering early subscribers one free game as an incentive.
In the past, Gameloft has been vocal about the difficulty of making money with Android, predicting in November 2009 that publishers would begin to cut investment in the platform.
However, Android has grown rapidly since then, with a recent NPD Group report suggesting that it now represents 52 per cent of the US mobile market.

Even back when it was just a sketch we were suitably intrigued by Sony's Tablet S. Then it was the "S1," a name that, indistinct as it was, still had more character and mystery than the unfortunately generic moniker it will ship with. Still, a dull name can't obscure the most distinctive design we've yet seen in an Android Honeycomb slate, an aerofoil-like shape inspired not by a flying machine, but a rather more pedestrian folded magazine.
But, the result is a tablet that's considerably thicker than the current king of the Android hill, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (not to mention the iPad 2), a chunky design that isn't always as hand-friendly as it looks. Is this the glossy, perfectly-paginated future of tablet design, or is it just a misshapen slate with a broken crease and shattered dreams? Read on to find out.

Compared to the S1 tablet -- make that the Tablet S -- Sony's dual-screen tab remains something of an enigma. AT&T hasn't said how much it'll cost on contract, nor do we know when it'll finally go on sale. Still, the tablet just get one step closer to becoming a real, shipping product, with Sony renaming it the Tablet P, as rumored, and clarifying the full range of specs -- namely, that it weighs in at 0.82 pounds and runs a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 SoC with twin 5.5-inch (1024 x 800) displays, dual 5MP and VGA cameras, an HSPA+ radio, a 3,080mAh battery, a full-sized SD card slot, 4GB of internal memory, a micro-USB socket and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those displays use the same TruBlack technology found in Sony's Bravia TVs, promising blacker blacks and whiter whites. What's more, Sony is opening up about the software, a topic it pointedly ignored when we first handled the hardware, then codenamed the S2. For starters, by the time it ships, it'll join the ranks of a growing number of tablets (most of them 7-inchers) running Android 3.2. And guess what? We recently sat down with the Tablet P a second time for a preview of how the outfit's optimized Honeycomb for those dual displays.
