The stock Nexus 7 peaks at a 1.3GHz clock speed when it's at full burn. That's certainly good enough for the $199 price tag, but eager adopters have just hit a new record in trying to wring out even more of a bang for the buck. Courtesy of a custom Elite kernel from XDA-Developers' Clemsyn, the Tegra 3 in the mini tablet will scale all the way to a heady 2GHz. You'd be right in suspecting that it leads to some dramatic speed boosts: the Nexus 7 at this pace can put a Transformer Prime to shame in common benchmarks, let alone most smartphones. Reaching the loftier heights of performance does require nerves of steel, however. The Elite kernel is very much a rough build that the creator doesn't yet trust with the public, and NVIDIA's processor is already known to get toasty under significantly added stress. There's hope a refined kernel will make for a safer venture into unknown territory. If you can't wait to throw at least some caution (and the warranty) to the wind, though, hit the second source link for code that will reach a slightly less melt-prone 1.8GHz.

On August 24, a California court ruled in favor of Apple in its patent-infringement case against Samsung, hitting the latter with a $1.05 billion fine. Tech pundits spent the weekend chattering about the possible repercussions of the decision, which Samsung will surely appeal. One of the biggest issues under discussion: how Apple's victory will affect Google Android, the operating system that powers the majority of Samsung's mobile devices, and itself a player in the patent-infringement actions shaking the tech world. For its part, Google made every effort to create some distance between Android and the smoking ruins of Samsung's case. 'The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims' the company wrote in a widely circulated statement. 'Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office.' Google didn't end there. 'The mobile industry is moving fast and all players—including newcomers—are building upon ideas that have been around for decades,' the statement continued. 'We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that.

Capcom's masssively successful (in Japan) Monster Hunter series is returning to the massively successful (in Japan) GREE platform this year, for an iOS/Android social game called Monster Hunter: Massive Hunting.
Similar to Capcom's previous iOS Monster Hunter, you fight giant beasts using touch controls, including "tap and flick" gestures. Players can also pick up materials to make new equipment, and use a "friend hunting" system, which adds a currently undefined social element. Presumably it doesn't involve hunting and killing your real life friends.

After refreshing its computer range, Apple's gearing up for two events for its new phone and tablet hardware, according to sources at AllThingsD. Given the excitement welling up behind its next iPhone, many have noted (including Daring Fireball's John Gruber) that it would make a whole lot of sense to furnish both the phone and the heavily rumored smaller tablet with individual events -- and that is, apparently, what's going to happen. Unfortunately, the anonymous sources weren't revealing anything further -- Apple's yet to confirm that posited September 12th event date, let alone any secondary event. But when it does, be assured that we'll be there to cover both of them.

There's a lot of talk of a new iPhone coming soon, and the Chinese know it. IDC researchers estimate that Apple's share of smartphones in the country was sliced almost in half during the second quarter, to 10 percent, as expectations and rumors led the local population to wait for the big update. Better competition also played a part in denting iPhone shipments, although it's not Apple's chief rival Samsung who's responsible. Rather, it's China's own Lenovo that had the most impact. It broke into the double digits with a second-place 11 percent share thanks to recently started indirect sales of its Android-dominated lineup, while Samsung saw its own share dip slightly to 19 percent. Chinese companies ZTEand Huawei bracketed Apple at third and fifth. We wouldn't be surprised if the balance of power shifts inabout a month, but the impacts to Apple and Samsung alike show just how tough it can be to stay on top in one of the fastest-growing markets on Earth -- especially one with so many local brands.

It has never been shy of charging top dollar for its iOS games, but Square Enix is to try and push the boat out further still.
The publisher has finally confirmed an August 31st Western release date for its episodic Final Fantasy mobile title Final Fantasy Dimensions, which was first released in the Japanese market some two years ago.
It has also confirmed the pricing. The first of the game’s four chapters can be downloaded for £1.99, but chapters two to four will cost £6.99 apiece. Or the four can be bought in a single £19.99 purchase.
That makes the game the most expensive that Square Enix has yet put out on iOS and one of (if not the?) most expensive games ever to hit the platform. What the price does suggest, however, is that the company has enjoyed success with its previous premium priced offerings.
Not wanting to undersell what is still a rich IP, Square has been careful never to devalue the Final Fantasy brand in its move from consoles to mobile.
The standard version of Final Fantasy currently costs £10.99 to download, with the HD iPad version costing £12.99 and Final Fantasy III for iPad costs £11.99. Even non-FF brands have followed similar strategy, with Chaos Rings II costing £12.99 to download.
And unlike companies like EA who will frequently cut the price of its catalogue titles to 69p for a weekend, Square Enix has stuck by its prices.
What makes this particularly interesting is the prevalence of free-to-play titles on smartphones. With the barriers to entry lower than ever before, key IP can still clearly compete in a space dominated by free games.
And you can bet that rival publishers haven’t let this go unnoticed.

And they hate slow glitch-riddled offerings – take note, developers.
The latest report from Strategy Analytics' Wireless Media Lab warns developers that they have certain expectations to meet if they want to secure customer loyalty, and make a popular app, while app stores should make the content easy to find.
Consumers want stable, useful, and easy to use apps, and are irked by apps are that send spam and run too many ads, as well as ones that are slow and glitchy.
But they shouldn't be too choosy, considering that they pay for less than ten per cent of the apps on their phone, meaning more than 80 per cent are free.
Of course, that doesn't guarantee a premium app is going to meet the standards they demand, and the data is a wake-up call to all.
Taryn Tulay, analyst, Strategy Analytics Wireless Media Lab, said: "For apps to hold any monetary value to the consumer, apps must be unique, of good quality and used by the consumer on a daily basis – providing them with a service or feature that they cannot get anywhere else."

Security changes could lead to other smartphone platforms being allowed.
Until now BlackBerry has been the only smartphone allowed to be used in government in the UK because of its unparalleled security. However, that might be about to change.
According to Computer Weekly: "Currently, Blackberry is the only smartphone device with impact level 3 (IL3) accreditation for information deemed sensitive to the working of government.
"However, under the new Government Protective Marking System (GPMS) the IL1-IL3 categories will be loosely classified together as Tier 1 (T1), which is intended to open the government market to a greater number of smartphone providers."
What this boils down to is, security will be mediated using third party clients running on other platforms, giving government staff and officials the ability to move away from RIM's device and into the arms of… say… iPhone and Android?

Social giant knows its Android app sucks so is eating its own dog food.
A report in Business Insider says that Facebook is encouraging (and in some cases ordering) its staff to give up their iPhones for Android devices.
However, this is not because of a Facebook/Apple dispute, rather it's because the social media monster knows how bad its Android app is, so is making its developers live with it as an incentive to make improvements.
This process, known as dogfooding, is common in the tech industry.
The last update to the iOS Facebook app made it a native iOS experience rather than using the HTML5 from the website, so maybe we're going to see a native Android experience as well.
While using HTML5 has worked quite well in some respects, it has led to inconsistencies between browser and app accessibility, particularly since Facebook rolled out Timeline.

Judge rules that Samsung and Apple have infringed IP and blocks sales of handsets and tablets.
Apple and Samsung have both been ordered to stop selling some smartphones and tablet computers in South Korea and pay damages after a court ruled they infringed each other's patents.
Although Samsung did not copy the design of the iPhone, the court ruled that it did infringe on an Apple patent related to the bounceback touchscreen feature that shows when a user has reached the end of a page.
Samsung was fined 25 million won ($22,000) and will be unable to sell its Galaxy SI and SII phones or the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets.
Meanwhile, the court decided that Apple violated two Samsung wireless technology patents. Apple was ordered to pay Samsung 40 million won ($35,400) and has been banned from selling iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and both iPad and iPad 2 tablets in the country.
While this court ruling is important, it is small fry compared to the situation in the US, where Apple is demanding more than $2.5 billion in damages and an order to permanently ban Samsung from selling patent-infringing products.
Samsung argues Apple owes $422 million for violating a clutch of its patents.

Web domains were seized after distributing dodgy apps.
It's probably unlikely RIM is a practitioner of the dark arts (given its own misfortune), but reports of illegal Android malware, hacks andviruses have rocketed ever since the BlackBerry maker called the Google OS a cesspool.
So perhaps unsurprisingly, the US District of Justice has revealed the capture of three pirate Android app websites as part of an FBI, and international law enforcement operation with the French and the Dutch.
Applanet.net, appbucket.net and snappzmarket.com are all now in the hands of the government, while visitors will find the sites closed, decorated in a banner that warns against copyright fraud.
Breuer, assistant attorney general, said: "Cracking down on piracy of copyrighted works – including popular apps – is a top priority of the Criminal Division.
"Software apps have become an increasingly essential part of our nation’s economy and creative culture, and the Criminal Division is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to protect the creators of these apps and other forms of intellectual property from those who seek to steal it."

Jury return verdict in Apple vs Samsung patent dispute.
A jury in California has ruled that Samsung should pay Apple $1.05bn (£665m) in damages in the intellectual property lawsuit that has the tech world on the edge of its seat.
The jury said that several of Samsung's devices had infringed Apple's software and design patents. It also rejected Samsung's claims that several of its patents had been breached and awarded it no damages.
Apple may now seek an import ban of some of its rival's products, blocking them from the US market.

There's no visual overhaul as it just did yesterday with Facebook Messages, but Facebook has now announced an update for its iOS app that promises some fairly big improvements of its own. According to the company, the app was "rebuilt from the ground up," and is now twice as fast as the previous version. That includes a faster opening of the app itself, smoother and faster scrolling, and photos that are said to load "instantly" -- changes that are largely due to a switch from the old HTML5 code to iOS' native programming language. Unfortunately, we're not able to test those claims ourselves just yet, but Facebook says that the update (version 5.0) will be available later today.
Update: The app is now available to download from the App Store, and it does indeed appear to be quite a bit speedier.

As reported earlier today by PCR, a video has surfaced that reveals a whole bunch of components that are reportedly taken from the latest iPhone.
One of the items in particular is a logic board, which was exposed to show off more of the device's components.
The importance of this would be the presence of an A5X chip, which is commonly found within Apple's latest iPad.
Whilst this may sound impressive off the bat, the chip itself is only a dual-core offering - something that would trail behind the power of chips within the device's closest competitors such as the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3 and LG Optimus 4X.

Worrying news if you're a big spender on Google Play.
Mobile security is always a big consumer fear, and following reports of Android malware rising by 300 per cent in Q2, app security provider Arxan Technologies claims 100 per cent of the top 100 paid Android apps have been hacked.
But don't feel so smug if you're on Apple, as data says 92 per cent of the top 100 paid iOS apps have also been invaded, alongside the top 15 free apps on iOS and Android.
In total, 40 per cent of popular free iOS apps have been hacked, doubling to 80 per cent for Android, spanning across genres including games, business, finance, social media, health, and more, demonstrating that no app will remain unturned.
The foreign penetration looks to achieve a series of goals such as disabling security, unlocking features, running illegal malware, and stealing codes and IP.
Jukka Alanen, VP at Arxan, said: "We envision a thriving app economy with freedom and confidence to innovate and distribute new apps. However, this potential is being threatened by hackers, and most enterprises, security teams, and app developers are not prepared for these attacks.
