We should supposedly be on the lookout for fifth-generation iPods to roll out this month according to, you know, “sources.” They should be sporting new Apple-designed click-wheels, plus an overall reduction in size and volume. It’s believed that Toshiba’s new perpendicular drives will be found inside, and we know they’ve announced an 80GB version so, you know, astute mathematicians could put 2 and 2 together and get an 80GB iPod (we did do well in math, we swear). Will it do video? God Steve Jobs only knows. Also, because stock is running so low on Apple’s high-end models (Power Mac G5s and Powerbook G4s, natch), sources expect we may get an announcement of new pro Macs, including potentially dual-core Power Mac G5s and some sort of bump in the Powerbook line. So keep your eyes peeled for those product leaks we know and love, mmmkay?

So we already know that Apple has an announcment planned for next week (you can also try scrolling down a couple of posts), but the big question on everyone’s minds is whether or not Apple is finally going to get around to introducing that video iPod we’ve been hearing rumors about for, well, about as long as there’s been a non-video iPod. AppleInsider thinks it’s a go, they’re reporting that Apple has begun production of a video-capable iPod which could (emphasis on the “could”) be unveiled as early as next week. Supposedly the device is slightly thinner than a 60GB iPod and has a small, nano-like click wheel and a large, high-res color display. We’ve gotten false alarms about this one before, but if it’s not a video iPod, what else could merit such a massive media event?

The U.S. isn’t the only place where the iPod nano is shaking up the market for flash-based audio players. In Korea, the home market of many leading audio-player manufacturers, the introduction of the nano has set off a price war. With the 2GB nano priced at W230,000 (about $220), companies like Cowon have been forced to slash prices by as much as 30%. But not all Korean companies are willing to cede the homefront. Samsung has kept the price of its 2GB flash player at W380,000 (about $365) — though the company has reduced the cost of a 4GB hard-disc player to W360,000 ($346). Sony, as a foreign brand with less to lose, has also cut prices, reducing the price of the 20GB Network Walkman by 30% (of course, at this point, Sony needs to do anything it can to goose its sales, so it might have done this even without the nano).

We have to admit that, over the past several decades we’ve been waiting for it, our enthusiasm for the Gizmondo has seriously cooled. So forgive us if we don’t foam at the mouth over Tiger Telematics’ announcement that the handheld gaming console will finally be released in the U.S. on October 22. Sure, we’d still like to take it for a spin. But let’s just say that the launch is unlikely to result in PSP-style pandemonium.

Florida-based Tiger Telematics Inc (other OTC, TGTL) has confirmed its USA release date of October 22, 2005 for Gizmondo and announces further retailers carrying the product in the United Kingdom.
Carl Freer, co-founder and Chairman, Tiger Telematics, says: "Contrary to rumours in the marketplace we are not delaying the scheduled USA launch, we are committed to the October 22, 2005 release date, and the product will be available in all 50 states well in advance of the Christmas retail season."
The extensive list of UK retailers continues to grow following the demand generated by the new Satellite Navigation package. Previously announced retailers like Comet (a leading UK electrical supplier with 264 stores), Argos (the UK's #1 catalogue-based highstreet retailer), Carphone Warehouse, HMV, Virtual Games, Harrods, Amazon and the top-10 destination John Lewis stores, are joined by Play.com and Maplin.
Play.com is one of the fastest-growing online retailers of DVD, music, books, games and consumer electronics, whilst Maplin features over 75 stores across the UK, a catalogue carrying over 15,000 products, and a high-traffic online presence.

Awwww. Well, it was good while it lasted, but the anticipation is now apparently squashed. We should expect no video iPod action on October 12, alas, but we should look forward to seeing some sort of update to the regular ol’ full-size iPod, along with the updates to the Pro Mac line. We should be looking at an 80GB iPod of slightly smaller form factor than current models — and potentially even a new color other than iconic white or Bono black. In the Powerbook department we should look forward to higher resolution displays — but no widescreen iBook yet, though sources expect all portable Macs will be sporting widescreens by next year. Both the updated Powerbooks and Power Macs will be using DDR2 memory, delivering additional performance gains beyond the processor speed bumps.

Tiger Telematics has confirmed that the Gizmondo will go on sale in US stores on October 22, dismissing rumours that the launch could be put back once again.
"Contrary to rumours in the marketplace we are not delaying the scheduled USA launch," said Gizmondo chairman Carl Freer.
"We are committed to the October 22 release date, and the product will be available in all 50 states well in advance of the Christmas retail season."
The Gizmondo was originally down for a Q1 2005 release, and was later set to launch on August 11. The date slipped to October just a week before, with the company blaming delays to two key titles and the fact that August is traditionally a slow month for retail.
Gizmondo has also announced that online entertainment retailer Play.com will be stocking the handheld following the launch of the new Satellite Navigation package. In addition, electronics chain Maplin will carry the Gizmondo on its website and in 75 stores across the UK. Play.com and Maplin join a list of Gizmondo retailers which already includes Argos, Comet, HMV and Amazon.
And finally, Tiger Telematics CEO Michael Carrender has hinted that there could be a new business deal on the cards for the company. "Tiger Telematics is strategically well positioned in a rapidly growing mobile gaming industry," he said in a statement.
"This has generated discussions that may or may not lead to a substantial corporate action or strategic opportunity."
It's not yet known what kind of deal Carrender could be hinting at, or which other companies might be involved - there have been no reports of any potential mergers or acquisitions involving Gizmondo of late.

A new version of the Amiga emulator for Palms and Tapwave Zodiacs etc, heres the info:

1. Introduction
After a long break, I decided to continue working on PalmUAE, although there is
already a new amiga emulator available called MyUAE. I was not able to try it though,
since it requires a 32MB device. That's one of the reasons why I decided to continue
working on PalmUAE. The another is hardfile support. Guess what? I added hardfile
support, some 2 months ago, but was unable to polish it in order to make it usable
for everyone. I also wanted to make as many features as possible, but I realised that
this process will never end. There will always be something new to implement.
O.K. here are the release notes:
Version 0.5:
- Started to track versions. There is no much previous versions info.
- Compact. Meaning that there is no external binary file needed. Everything is stored
in one file (except, of course, kickstart).
- added run-time menu. You access it by tapping the menu icon at the bottom-right.
- hardfile support. You can mount one hardfile to act like hard disk.
- on-screen keyboard at the bottom of the screen.
- custom-defined keys. You can save defaults, and have different key assignment for
different configuration.
- two floppy drives available. If you are using only hard drive, disable them to save
storage RAM. That way you will have more available for hard disk file
- mouse sensitivity control. Amiga programs use different mouse sensitivity, so you
can scale it from 1 to 8. Default is 4, which matches Workbench 1.3 default.

The Playstation emulator for Palms and the Tapwave Zodiac has been updated to v0.69, heres whats new from zodttd:
Ok all, here's a new release of PPSX version 0.69 (no chuckling!).
The big differences in this version since the last ones are:
-- Automatic frameskip removed. Replaced with a more (or soon to be) functional frameskip solution.
Press down on the analog stick and press the Left Trigger: Lower Frameskip By One after release of button
Press down on the analog stick and press the Right Trigger: Raise Frameskip By One after release of button
Press down on the analog stick and press the Top Hard Button: Displays Framerate
Press down on the analog stick and press the Top Hard Button: Displays Frameskip
NOTE: Theres a design flaw currently that makes the frameskip not display if it's at 0. Hope ya don't mind. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
-- During the intro/load screen theres a checkbox for USE HLE.
Try games with and without this enabled and see if the framerate/compatability is better for you.
Then let me know in the Compatbility Thread!
Hopefully this release will help me get a feel for the 5000 or so available games out there and how they perform speed and compatbility wise with certain options. And it may even help get your fav game running better.
Oh yeah, I get a constant 13 for framerate during Buster Bros gameplay, and 20 in some other titles like Front Mission 3 at times. So there are games that will run around the 15 mark. 15 just isn't as fast as it needs to be, or even sounds.

The video iPod won’t disappoint. It feels slim and easy to hold even after two weeks spent with my nano. Video playback is solid. They’re not kidding about 30 fps without sputtering. You can’t fast forward, but you can scroll back and forth on a progress bar—just as you do with music—to jump forward and back in the video. Oh, and the black model is going to be hot. Without the U2 model’s red wheel it’s less of an acquired taste.
The iMac hasn’t changed much. It’s a wee bit thinner and there’s a camera eye / IR detector at the top. The eye is the one thing that doesn’t live up to Apple’s usual panache. It seems an odd black dot in the middle of the iMac’s white forehead.
The remote control, which uses IR is very stylish. It has an iPod Shuffle look and feel and a set of controls set in a circle that resemble the first iPods, but are marked differently. The on-screen menus for Front Row are also iPod-like. One nice touch is the way Front Row blurs out the menu screen on a DVD (You know: “Operation not permitted”) and puts a standardized iPod-like menu over it. My one gripe is that it’s not always clear which button to push on the remote: plus or minus, fast forward or rewind, or something else? The Apple rep told me to press Menu to select the video player from the main Front Row menu. Whoops - you have to press Play (>). Yes, even six buttons can be confusing at first—unusual for Apple.
TV shows on the iMac are a grainy 320 x 240 that looks better in a small window than full screen. It’s not a TiVo replacement, let’s be clear. It’s more like the BitTorrent copies of The Daily Show - a way to catch shows you’d have to miss otherwise, and definitely more reliable than streaming. It’ll be a good alternative to needing to plop in front of the boob tube once more shows become available. The iTunes interface is a lot more consumer friendly than finding and downloading torrents. What it needs most are more shows!
The underrated announcement of the day is iTunes gifting. Those of us who are always evangelizing new bands or you-gotta-hear-this songs to each other now have an easy way to push tracks on our friends and vice versa. Good thing the recipient has to accept the gift, or I’d be jamming everyone’s libraries with Goldfrapp already.

As expected, Apple used its “One More Thing..” keynote today to announce video capable iPods. The new iPod features a 2.5 inch 4:3 screen capable of playing H.264 and MPEG-4 video at 30fps. A little bit of digging on the Apple site shows that the new iPod has a 2-3 hour battery life whilst playing video, depending on whether you pick the 30GB or 60GB model.
Apple has also released iTunes 6, which features a new video content section. Currently there are 2,000 music videos available for download, as well as five TV series (including Lost and Desperate Housewives) from ABC and Disney. Music videos and TV episodes cost $1.99 each.
So what does this all mean for the PSP and the burgeoning popularity of its UMD movie format? Was our prediction that the Sony PSP was about to get pwnt by a video capable iPod correct? It’s early days yet, but it looks like Apple is trying to do the same thing for video as what it did for the music industry: by marketing, distributing and selling movies, TV episodes and music videos online.
There’s also the issue of users putting their own content onto their iPod/PSP. The PSP requires expensive Memory Stick Duo cards as well as a confusing array of software for getting videos in the right format for PSP playback. The hard drive in the new iPod means users won’t need to pay extra to store more videos, with iTunes 6 providing a simple method for users to store and organize their movies.
Whilst there aren’t actually any full length movies available for purchase in the new iTunes, it’s only a matter of time before Apple sorts out contracts with the popular studios. When that happens, the UMD will be like what the CD is to the iTunes Music Store; unnecessarily physical. With a video iPod on one side and a completely games focused Nintendo DS on the other, the Sony PSP is looking increasingly cornered.
[Update: Apple has posted a 7 stage process for getting your videos onto the new iPod with Quicktime 7 Pro. That’s a bit easier than the complete lack of instructions with the PSP now ain’t it?]

In 2001, Electronic Arts' PC game Majestic used real-life phone calls, e-mails, instant messages, faxes, and Web sites to immerse players further into the game's world. It got plenty of mainstream publicity for its innovative ideas, but it just didn't take off, and the game was soon canceled. With multifunctional gadgets emerging in droves these days, it was only a matter of time before somebody revisited the idea with a single machine's combined feature set.
It seems Nokia is doing just that, as the company today announced the development of Shadow-Born, a new game that incorporates the company's smartphone functionalities into the game world. Characters in the game will leave players text messages, schedule appointments, set alarms, and more with the goal of creating a more immersive game. In the game, players step in to the role of a Shadown-Born, a person with the ability to see the hidden supernatural side of a modern urban landscape, where vampires control corporations and werewolf gangs own the streets.
Shadow-Born is being developed by Backbone Entertainment. Formed in 2003 from the merger of Digital Eclipse and ImaginEngine, Backbone Entertainment developed Death Jr. for the PSP. The company also made Rifts: Promise of Power for the N-Gage.

I am new to ipod (just got my first) and started searchinh the web and typed in www.ipodgames.com and came across a site which tells about new ipod games about to be launched. It also mentions that for the first 1000 people to register then the ipod games, when launched, will be totally free of charge..
Don't know how old it is or if the first 1000 has been surpassed but maybe worth a look...I registered just in case.

In a BBC TV interview last week, Sony Chief Executive Producer Phil Harrison put on a brave face and announced that Sony isn’t concerned about Apple’s new video iPod. Quote: “No, we’re not worried.”
If it weren’t just necessary bravado (executives aren’t allowed to admit to being afraid or needing their comfy blankies), we might be inclined to believe him. As it stands, though, the new iPod could put a serious crimp in Sony’s plans to sell the PSP as anything other than a portable gaming device.
Here’s a quick comparison of the two products from the video playback angle only:
Resolution: iPod 320x240; PSP 480x272 (advantage: PSP)
Storage: iPod 30GB and 60GB; PSP memory sticks up to 4GB (advantage: iPod)
Commerce: iPod video store uses familiar iTunes interface; PSP lacks video store or central video clearinghouse of any sort (advantage: iPod)
Usability: getting video onto iPod is part of the product design; PSP requires third-party compression software and technical know-how (advantage: iPod)
Portability: iPod weighs 4.8 and 5.5 ounces; PSP weighs 9.17 ounces (advantage: iPod)
Operation: iPod is made for one-hand operation; PSP requires two hands (advantage: iPod)
What we’re really hoping is that the iPod creates within Sony an urgency that will allow the PSP’s product designers to ditch technologies that are holding the console back and push through changes that have been shot down in the past for political reasons. The good folks at Sony know what’s required for the PSP to compete with the iPod, but political considerations and warring internal factions can result in compromises that cripple product popularity.

Tiger Telematics has announced plans to launch a range of Gizmondo satellite navigation packages when the handheld goes on sale in the States later this month.
Gizmondo Navigator 2006, which comes on SD card, was developed with ALK Technology and is powered by CoPilot. It's designed to let users navigate their way to a specific street, zip code, point of interest or even house number via 3D or 2D maps and step-by-step voice instructions.
The Gizmondo unit will be priced at USD 229 and the Gizmondo Navigator 2006 will be available for four separate regions - East Coast, Mid-West, West Coast and South West - for USD 169. The USA-wide Gizmondo Navigator will carry a price tag of USD 249.
Tiger Telematics will also offer a "complete system bundle", including software and a Smart ADDs-enabled Gizmondo, for USD 399. A dashboard cradle will be available separately.

Tiger has previously announced that the US version of Gizmondo will come with an upgraded battery, doubling game playing time to six hours on a single charge. The Gizmondo is due to launch in the US on October 22 - and even though that's just days away, Electronics Boutique's online store is still posting a street date of January 31, 2006. Tiger Telematics is adamant that the October 22 date will be met, however, and issued a statement confirming the launch date earlier this month.

Gizmondo USA Inc. subsidiary of Jacksonville, Florida-based Tiger Telematics Inc (other OTC, TGTL) today announced an action-packed games line-up for the North American launch, which kicks off from 22nd October 2005.

The always excellent Game Over feature on CNN reports on the upcoming launch of the Gizmondo portable console, and what a colossally bad idea it is. From the article: "Assuming you do want to play one of those games, it's going to be a frustrating affair. The system's D-pad controller doesn't lend itself to accurate aiming, particularly in fast-paced games. Of course, you have to turn on the Gizmondo to play games or take advantage of any of its offerings. This is not a quick task. In fact, it takes 48 seconds. (Compare that to less than five seconds on the Nintendo DS.) "

Tiger Telematics has announced the full list of software titles due to launch alongside the Gizmondo when the handheld his North American stores this weekend.
Topping the bill are snowboarding game SSX 3 and FIFA Soccer, both from Electronic Arts, followed by SCI's Richard Burns Rally and arcade puzzler Sticky Balls from Gizmondo Studios.

Despite CNN’s bashing of the Gizmondo’s US launch, European managing director Carl Freer believes his company is in a great position. In his words:
”...we have a number of other models in development to complement the current device, the game portfolio is growing week-by-week, and the satellite navigation package is creating huge demand that, frankly, is over and above our original projections.”
Freer feels that Gizmondo only needs to represent a “small slice of [of the games industry] to be successful.” The NGage, by comparison, is still around, despite its niche audience. Have we been too harsh on this up-and-coming contender in the portable market?

We’re a bit surprised we didn’t get a liveblog-like stream of emailed press releases from Tiger Telematics this morning because today’s their big day in North America. That’s right, the Gizmondo is officially on sale for $229 with fourteen launch titles. They did roll deep by buying a full-page ad in USA Today with Verne Troyer (aka Mini Me) shilling the Gizmondo, but we’re not so sure a launch with some weak hype, obvious insecurity with their press presence, abysmal sales abroad, and a third of a billion in mounting debt is reason enough for Tiger’s EU managing director Carl Freer to be “extremely proud of what [they’ve] achieved.”

When Apple unveiled the iPod with video and new iMac a couple of weeks ago, the company also showed off a couple of new accessories, including the iPod Universal Dock and the shuffle-esque Apple Remote (which also works with the new iMac). Paired, the two turn the iPod into a home-entertainment hub, with easy connections for audio and video output, and quick access via the Remote. Of course, third-party accessories have offered similar capabilities for some time but the two devices mark a big move by Apple in terms of making the iPod more capable as a stationary, non-portable, device (and we’re sure some of the companies making competing accessories aren’t exactly thrilled that Apple has muscled in on “their” turf). iLounge took a look at both accessories, and found that, while not exactly best of breed, they get the job done when it comes to operating an iPod in the living room. In particular, they found it to be more limited than Kensington’s Stereo Dock, which includes a power charger and audio cables, and found that the range of the IR remote was limited (not surprising, since it is IR). They were also disappointed to see that the accessories only come in white, given that Apple has been busily pumping out lots of black iPods lately.

Tiger Telematics is reporting that its October 22 launch of the Gizmondo handheld went off as planned by "receiving an enthusiastic reception from US consumers."
The console went on sale Saturday through the company's official Web site, as well as at a dozen mall kiosk locations nationwide. The company is supporting the launch with a $30 million marketing campaign kicked off last week with a full-page ad in USA Today featuring Verne Troyer.
Tiger Telematics CEO Mike Carrender issued a statement saying the company was "delighted" with the launch and labeling it an important milestone. "From here we intend to escalate our launch activities and look forward to making further announcements as we roll out through retail," Carrender added.
The company plans to roll out another 38 mall kiosk locations in the near future and also looks to have the Gizmondo carried in major retail chains. Currently there are 14 games available for the American Gizmondo, though six of those (SSX 3, FIFA Soccer 2005, Fathammer Classics, Hockey Rage 2005, Interstellar Flames 2, and Pocket Ping Pong 2005) were sold out on the site.
Despite announcements of multiple packages available at launch, the Gizmondo system itself is currently available only in a stand-lone package for $229. The announced $399 edition that's bundled with the Gizmondo Navigator 2006 GPS software is not yet available. What's more, the Gizmondo Web site doesn't even offer that package for preorder, instead giving customers the option of a $499 package that includes the system, the Navigator software ($249 on its own), and a car cradle ($59.99 when purchased separately). It's still a price break of about $40 over buying the items separately, but it doesn't quite match the $80 savings of the previously announced $399 package.

A senior executive at handheld console firm Gizmondo who resigned last week along with former boss Carl Freer had a number of convictions for involvement in a Swedish mafia group, as did two other Gizmondo staff.
Stefan Eriksson was an executive officer of Gizmondo Europe, and earned over $3 million in salary and bonuses from the company (along with a generous $100,000 vehicle allowance) before his resignation on October 20th.
However, Swedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet has revealed that in two trials in 1993 and 1994, Eriksson was convicted of a number of mobster-related charges, including financial fraud related to counterfeit money and an attempted $3m scam on a financial institution, and sentenced to over ten years in prison.
Eriksson was at the time considered to be the brains behind an operation referred to in the media as the Uppsala Mafia after the large town in Sweden where the group operated, and where, interestingly, Gizmondo now operates its Swedish office.
Two other Gizmondo staff members - who are also believed to have resigned last week - also had convictions for their involvement in this group, including Johan Enander, described as the Uppsala Mafia's "Torpedo", who was a debt collector for the group and was convicted of blackmail and assault. He was latterly employed as Gizmondo's "head of security".
Eriksson's connections to Gizmondo don't stop at his own employment for the firm, however; he is also a co-owner of Northern Lights, a development company which was paid $3.5 million by Gizmondo for its assistance in developing software titles Chicane and Colours - titles which were officially developed by Indie Studios and Warthog.
The other co-owner of Northern Lights is Carl Freer, the Gizmondo Europe managing director who also resigned his position on October 20th (but like Eriksson, retains stock in the company), claiming that it's now past the start-up position where his entrepreneurial skills can be of use. Both he and Eriksson claim that they will now pursue new entrepreneurial ventures.
At the end of last month, Freer paid $3.5 million back to Gizmondo, stating that it was a temporary move to "avoid any appearance of impropriety"; however, the company's 10-K regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission suggests that over $21 million is owed by the company to Freer and Eriksson, on the basis that the executives loaned this cash to the firm on a short-term basis.
The day before Freer repaid the $3.5 million sum, the 10-K form reveals, the board of Gizmondo formed an independent committee to look into a number of transactions approved by Freer and Eriksson in which they may have had a personal interest.
In the wake of their departure, Michael Carrender - who is now CEO, CFO and chairman of the board of Gizmondo - told Aftonbladet that he was not aware of Eriksson's connections with the mafia, and claimed that an independent counsel will now be appointed to look into any possible irregularities in the company's transactions.
The Gizmondo console launched in the United States last weekend, to what the company claims was an "enthusiastic reception" from US consumers. Twelve shopping mall kiosks around the country are selling the console, along with the official website, and a further 38 kiosks are planned for the coming weeks.
Tiger Telematics, Gizmondo's parent company, plans to begin trading its stock on the NASDAQ exchange in the near future. The firm reported an loss of $99.29 million in the year leading up to the launch of the Gizmondo, and expects an operating loss of $210 million in the first six months of 2005.

The N-Gage had a very rough launch (it’s already earned a place in many net compilations of product flops) and it has kind of languished in limbo since then: gamers don’t buy consoles that don’t have strong game lineups, and developers don’t develop for platforms that gamers don’t own.
So we’re not sure if these glowing reviews for the new fighter One indicates that the N-Gage has finally emerged from its cocoon or is emitting its final swan song. What we do know is that we love the thinking behind One’s multiplayer element: the goal of the game is to climb a worldwide multiplayer ladder to become—you guessed it—the One. What’s that work out to given the N-Gage’s sales? Like five other people you gotta beat?
Low blow, we know. But seriously: the game looks good and supposedly plays well too. Here two reviews:
Gamespot: “ONE’s gameplay is nothing short of stunning, even in a nascent stage of development…. ONE constitutes nothing short of a quantum leap for the N-Gage, graphically speaking.”
All About Symbian: “It pushes the N-Gage in terms of graphics, connectivity, scope and gives the gaming public a type of challenge that hasn’t really been seen before. Take away all the frills and novelty factors around the game and you still have an exceptional handheld beat-em-up game that can stand alongside the genre favourites.”
