Reports have surface on the Web today saying that Apple is inviting certain members of the media (read: not us, probably) to a "special event for new products." What products will be shown are completely unknown, naturally, but anyone with a pulse might hazard a guess that the event could be used to launch the new, proper video iPod, while some more adventurous people might mention "iPhone" in the same breath. Hopefully, they'll have their movie store worked out by then, or soon after.
The event, which is being held somewhere in northern California and perhaps at a Legion of Doom-like headquarters, is open only to invited members of the press. Additionally, the event is scheduled to take place at the same time as the Apple Expo in Paris. As it stands, Euro journalists will get to attend a videoconference in London of Apple's secretive northern California event. In any case, don't change that dial, since information regarding the event is likely to change quite a bit before it takes place.

Some hard details regarding Apple's rumored iTunes Movie Store have crept out this morning, with word that Apple will be selling new release movies for $14.99 and back catalog movies for $9.99 perhaps as early as this month, according to reports. Of course, these movies would then be viewable on the iPod. But what use is a movie store if there's no movies?
You see, it appears that one of the big Hollywood studios, either Universal or Sony, has begin digitizing their back catalog going back to 1999 for use on a online store. While the method of compression is a closely guarded secret, it's also worth mentioning that the source of this information—a major studio digitizing its back catalog—was not able to confirm what online movie store the films will be heading to. While Apple's download service is the obvious choice, let's not forget that Amazon appears to be heading into the movie downloading business sooner rather than later.

Spout, a minimalist game by Kuni. Ported to the Zodiac from the original version by Andrew Kearns (aka Vilmos). I got annoyed with the controls when I started playing this game on my GP2X so I ported it to the Zodiac where the joystick may not be better, but I'm definitely used to it.
Thanks to testers: Charles and Mrpropre. Also thanks to Mrpropre for the snazzy icons!

The doPi iPod adapter let's you belt out Gloria Gaynor's most famous track anywhere you have an iPod. The doPi system lets you download songs from their servers in MP4 format to load onto your iPod, which then plays back the files with the lyrics appearing on the screen during the song. You know, Karaoke style. It's compatible with iTunes PC and Mac, so you're still syncing the files through your normal iTunes interface.
The doPi comes with the appropriate cables to hook up toy our ipod and Microphone. Despite this adapter being iPod dependent, it's actually not completely portable. You need to use the included AC adapter to plug in the doPi, so you're limited to places where there's an AC adapter. Dopey? Yes. Fun? Only if you really like Karaoke. And at $60, we'd recommend just getting a copy of Karaoke Revolution Party for your PlayStation 2.

Apple rumor mongering is at a fevered pitch with Apple's media event now just days away. Venerable rumor site Think Secret is citing sources calling for that 23-inch, Core 2 Duo iMac we heard about to drop along side 2nd generation iPod nanos. The new nanos, originally expected by TS in August, will be shoved out the door sporting new, multi-colored metalic cases presumably along the line of the now defunct iPod mini. But that's not enough for you is it fanboy? So TS is also calling for the launch of the highly anticipated iTunes Movie Store as well as capacity upgrades for the 5G iPod to store the new flix. No surprise on the bump in disk what with Toshiba already announcing their 40 and 80GB disks and all. Sorry folks, but that touch-screen video iPod just ain't gonna happen next week, according to TS that is.

Nokia last week kicked off its plan to build GPS-based satellite navigation technology onto its N-series "multimedia computer" handsets with the acquisition of German route-planning software developer Gate5.
Gate5 has produced route-planning software since the late 1990s and has developed software for several platforms including in-car solutions for Volkswagen and Daimler-Chrysler. However, it's the smart2go software for Symbian smart phones that sparked Nokia's interest in the company.
Nokia multimedia chief Anssi Vanjoki said the smart phone-based satellite navigation market hasn't developed as quickly as Nokia had hoped. Interestingly, Nokia pledge to continue developing solutions for other platforms besides its own Symbian-based operating systems.
Nokia said it will release a Gate5-produced navigation software update for the Nokia 770 internet tablet, although this will require the puraches of a separate GPS unit.

Ok, so in addition the new iMacs Steve is expected to announce on the event-that-may-or-may-not-happen on September 12th, and the updated Nano, the official announcement of movies on iTMS, we can also expect to see a standalone dedicated movie streaming device running an "updated version" of iTunes (not Front Row). Speculated to be a new movie-enhanced version of the Airport Express (or some like device). Kind of reminds us of the iHome rumor, or the Apple HDTVs rumor, but this one somehow seems a little more subtle and plausible. We've doubted their entrance into unexpected types of consumer electronics before (see: Hi-Fi), so who knows, maybe you'll watch iTunes-downloaded movies on your video iPod (or iPod with video) as well as your TV, and without the need for a Mac mini cum media PC we've all been pining after, too.

Zenocom rolled out BluePod, a dongle that fits the iPod dock connector and suddenly gives you a couple of things every iPod is lacking: Bluetooth capability and FM radio. But don't get too excited just yet. The device stops short of greatness, because all it can do is display a Bluetooth-compatible cellphone's caller ID information on the iPod screen and lower the iPod's volume automatically when a call comes in.
Too bad it can't stream music to Bluetooth speakers or headphones. We're a little suspicious when we look at this picture of the product attached to an ancient iPod mini. No word on pricing or availability, but this better be cheap.

News from Vampent:
It is a beta version now. We test it on Nokia E60 & Nokia E61. And we hope to receive feedbacks of other S60 3rd version phones. You will be greatly appreciated for any feedback. Thanks in advance.
Because there are many limits for the programs which are not certified in S60 3rd version phones, this beta version does not have the following functions:
1. Bluetooth Multiplay
2. Automatically recognize roms which are sent by bluetooth or infrared. You must put your roms into the directory "Others\vNes" directly. You can do this by card-reader or USB.
We say sorry for that. We will try our best to seek a method to solve them.
The download link is
http://vampent.com/d.php?d=vnes_s60v3.sis
Note:
You may need to do the following steps in order to allow your phone to install vNes:
1) Open Application Manager
2) Choose Options-> Settings
3) Switch Software installation to *All* (not Certified only)
This will allow you to install non-certified applications.
Please enjoy it!

News from Vampent:
Any feedback for this beta version will be appreciated.
Because of the limits for programs which are not certified in S60 3rd version phones, we have to change the method of filling the screen. The efficiency is much lower than before So you may feel the speed a little slow when you use a full-screen option, especially for those 352*416 resolution phones. Users of those phones can set size option "double". We are currently seeking a method to solve this problem.
The following function is not supported:
***Automatically recognize roms which are sent by bluetooth or infrared. You must put your roms into the directory "Others\vBoy" directly. You can do this by card-reader or USB.
The download link is
http://www.vampent.com/d.php?d=vboy_s60v3.sis
Note:
You may need to do the following steps in order to allow your phone to install vBoy:
1) Open Application Manager
2) Choose Options-> Settings
3) Switch Software installation to *All* (not Certified only)
This will allow you to install non-certified applications.

Critical has released a new Gameboy emulator for the Gizmondo, heres his post:
Since GizVBA isn't very good, I decided to tidy up and release the port of gnuboy that I was looking at a while ago. It's pretty complete, I think, but let me know if you have any problems/requests. I might well get around to supporting zipped roms at some point. GameBoy Advance (GBA) games are NOT supported by this emulator, and never will be. If you want that, do it yourself.
README.TXT contents below:
GizBoy 0.1.0
---------------
Gizmondo port by critical of gnuboyce 0.9.13-0.7, which in turn is based on gnuboy.
It emulates Nintendo GameBoy and GameBoy Color systems, complete with sound, SRAM and savestates.
It uses 1.5x anti-aliased scaling. It is *extremely* unlikely that I will change that.
It DOES NOT emulate the GameBoy Advance, and never will.
gnuboy is licensed under GNU Generic Public License(GPL), as is GizBoy.Source is available on request to the contact address below.
The original licence files and documentation may be found in the doc directory of the zip file that this readme file came in.
Source is available on request, or at:
http://www.rxshorty.nl/gizmondo/home...rc-release.zip
Contact: criticalhippo@gmail.com
Installation
------------
Put GizBoy.exe in the root of your SD card, along with the included gx.dll if you don't already have it. If you're using firefly's launcher, put everything in
a directory called GizBoy in the root of your SD card.
Usage
-----
GameBoy and GameBoy Color roms must be in a directory called:
GizBoy
in the root of your SD Card.
The GameBoy ROMs must have the extension '.gb' and the GameBoy Color ROMs must have the extension '.gbc'.
Buttons
-------
The joypad does what you'd expect. The other buttons are:
STOP START
PLAY B
FFWD A
RWND SELECT
During emulation, the home key toggles main menu on and off, which will also pause/resume the emulator.
Load/save state has been implemented.
Press the Speaker key to load state, and the Asterisk (*) key to save state.
If there is no state to load, and you try to load state, it will say that it succeeded, but obviously it won't have.
Whilst in the main menu, the STOP key exits back to the Gizmondo system.
Up and Down on the joypad in the main menu select the ROM, PLAY starts L and R triggers will page through the ROMs 10 at a time.

Hi... just thought I'd draw people's attention to a new iPod release (for Nano only) on the demoscene. This one's actually nothing to do with me, but from a quick search it doesn't seem to have been mentioned around here yet...
For the uninitiated, the demoscene is a computer subculture devoted to showing off with fancy graphical and musical demonstrations, which are known as demos. They aren't demos in the sense of 'something coming soon' or 'pay me $20 for the full thing' - they're standalone programs to be enjoyed in their own right. They're generally non-interactive, and most importantly, have visuals rendered in real time. I must emphasise, this isn't a video player... what you see is generated on-the-fly.
For a long time the only iPod demo was my own effort, "Podfather", but now someone else has stepped up and produced something considerably more impressive.

While mixin' it up iPod-style has certainly been done before, MusicJam is looking to combine the simplest of mixer functions with a karaoke machine in its aptly-named iPod Mixer. Essentially, this device allows you to add your own vocals and guitar riffs to the tune currently playing on your iPod, which could definitely bring out the "one man band" in any musician. The mixer sports an iPod dock (presumably compatible with the iPod with video only), microphone / guitar inputs, volume sliders, tone / distortion controls, RCA outputs, and even attempts to replicate that on-stage allure by touting echo / sustain options for your vocs. The company also throws in a microphone, mic clamp, and cabling to get you warmed up, and includes "KaraokeVideos" software to turn any jam into an iPod-compatible karaoke vid. While the quality here is certainly questionable, it looks to be a solid addition to your Korg-infused Les Paul, and hey, getting you fully prepped for that karaoke circuit will only set you back $229.

You know that people are trying to jump on the iPod bandwagon when someone releases a breathalyzer that connects to the ubiquitous music player. Yes, David Steele Enterprises (no, not that David Steel) has just released an iBreath ($50, black or white color), a small device to plug into the dock connector of your iPod. Sticking out of the side of the device is the breathalyzer tube, and within five seconds it'll read out your blood alchohol content level, accurate to within 0.01 BAC -- oh and if that wasn't enough, it doubles as an FM transmitter for your car stereo. That just leaves us with one burning question: will Mr. Steele be sending one to recently DUIed Paris Hilton?

As expected, Apple's hot-selling iPod nano has been given a big-time update with some mini-like colors, new capacities, better displays, better batteries, and new pricing. They all sport an even-thinner aluminum case and are available in (again, mini-like) green, silver, black, blue, and pink. However, the 2GB and 8GB version are available in aluminum and black only, respectively. As for pricing, $149 for 2GB, $199 for 4GB, and $249 for the 8GB model. Apple sez: "Double the storage for the same price," and they're available today. What's more, the new packaging is 52% less volumetric than the old iPod nano, making it "environmentally friendly." Expect to see tons of these on the subway by next week.

Not quite the video iPod we were hoping for, not by a long shot, but Apple is refreshing their flagship iPod (with video) models today with a whole lotta' software love, and a couple hardware tweaks for good measure. The screen is now 60% brighter, the battery can last up to 3.5 hours during video playback, and the iPod includes new headphones, but otherwise the specs remain the same. As for software, the iPod is finally getting gapless playback, text-based search and brightness controls, along with a whole slew of games. The 'Pod has Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini Golf, Pac Man, Tetris, Texas Hold 'Em, Vortex, and Zuma bundled, and you can nab new games for $5 each off of iTunes. Maybe the best news is that Apple is dropping the prices and bumping the storage: you can get a spankin' new 60GB iPod for $250, and the new 80 gigger for $350. No word yet on availability.

Electronic Arts has confirmed support for the launch of Nokia’s next-gen mobile phone games platform, with a range of titles custom-designed for Nokia S60 devices.
Through Nokia’s Content Discoverer, consumers are able to download EA games through virtual shopping malls directly to their mobile devices.
“Nokia shares our vision of making it easy for people around the world to find and play the best quality games on their mobile phones,” said Mitch Lasky, senior VP of EA
“We are looking forward to working more closely with Nokia on promoting a delivery system that propels mobile gaming forward. This relationship will bring together EA's great brands and development studios with Nokia's innovative hardware and global consumer reach,” he added.
Some of EA’s biggest franchises initially available will include The Sims 2, FIFA 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, FIFA Street 2, Doom, Tetris and Tetris Mania.
Nokia’s next-generation mobile phone gaming platform is due to launch in the first half of 2007, and continues the work already established by the company via its N-Gage gaming deck.
“The core of Nokia’s games strategy is to make it easy for people to find, buy and play great quality mobile games and we’re excited to expand our relationship with EA to help make that possible,” said Jaakko Kaidesoja, director of games and multimedia at Nokia.
“Nokia and EA have a common vision regarding the opportunities in mobile games and how to turn them into a reality.”
“When you combine Nokia’s leadership in hardware, usability and software platforms with EA’s brands and quality thresholds, the results will speak for themselves,” he added.

In an unusual turn of events, Apple has pre-announced a wireless video streaming set-top box to be released in Q1 2007 with the tag line "you can take content to your computer or iPod, but now... TV." Going by the codeword of iTV, the box looks like a flattened Mac mini -- apparently it's around half the height -- and features a built-in power supply, USB 2.0, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus regular ol' RCA stereo audio ports. Controllable by the standard Apple remote, the iTV will come with an updated version of the Front Row interface that shares Front Row's smooth 3D graphics, but differs in that it has a menu on the right side of the screen. Apparently it'll work with both iTunes on both PCs and Macs, and will sell for $299.

As if those spotlit "It's Showtime" Apple announcements weren't going to yield the iTunes Movie Store; just in time too, as CinemaNow and Movielink have been around for ages, Vongo's been kicking for months, Amazon's Unbox just hit the streets the other day, Microsoft's Zune video player is just around the corner, and Netflix's movie service is expected any time. With the iTunes Movie Store now available in Apple's new iTunes 7 you'll be able to download full res (640 x 480) movies at $9.99 apiece for most titles, $14.99 for new releases and $12.99 for pre-orders. The files are protected, of course, with FairPlay DRM; they'll play back on your iPod, but not much else, unfortunately, so if you want movies the iTunes way, be prepared to watch them in iTunes or to get yourself an iPod. Sadly, it seems the rumors were true of it being a Disney-only store: Apple so far has only managed to procure 70 movies for their launch, from the Disney-owned Walt Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, and Miramax studios. They're promising frequent updates, though, and they will be launching new movies at the same time that they're released on DVD. As for iTunes 7, there's plenty of good news to be had beyond the addition of movie downloads. Gapless playback (which is happenin' in all the new iPods) is the big winner, and iTunes 7 can go through your whole library and fix previously downloaded tracks to play gapless. The player has also gotten a substantial face lift, borrowing from WMP11 stylings for track listings, tossing in Cover Flow (a third-party OS X eyecandy favorite which Apple apparently bought), a good helping of whitespace and Apple's own design know-how.

Damn, looks like even the humble iPod shuffle is getting a bump today. After having sold 10 million of the first-gen shuffles, the new model is now reportedly the size of the iPod radio remote, comes in just a 1GB capacity, and sports a shiny new aluminum body with a clip for easy wearability. Steve's calling it the "world's smallest MP3 player" and hey, who are we to argue? It's available for preorder today and expected to ship with its itty bitty dock and ear buds sometime in October, for the bargain basement price of only $79.

For the better part of a year, rumors have run amok that Apple was getting into games. In May, GameSpot was told by a tech-sector recruiter that former LucasArts developer Mike Lampell was heading up a group inside Apple's storied iTunes division, which was recruiting "C/C++ coders with a 'gaming background.'"
Today at a "special event" held by Apple in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple finally made it official. As of today, games will be available for download on the company's popular iTunes service. The cost per game will be $4.99, the same price as many Xbox Live Arcade games.
Ironically, many of the iPod games Apple is offering are already available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Foremost among them are Namco Bandai's arcade classic Pac-Man and the puzzlers Bejeweled and Zuma, both from PopCap Games. Other available titles are Texas Hold 'Em, Mahjong, Vortex, Mini Golf, and the mother of all puzzle games, Tetris. "Each game plays perfectly on your iPod using the intuitive click wheel as a controller," according to Apple.
Unfortunately for owners of older models, all Apple games are playable only on fifth-generation video iPods, which were released last year in 30GB and 60GB versions, and the new models announced today, which will be on store shelves in 30GB and 80GB flavors in October. The new iPods will retail for $249 and $349, respectively, will be 30 percent thinner than their predecessors, and will sport screens that are 60 percent brighter and have higher resolution. iTunes will soon offer movie downloads as well.

Griffin just slipped three new iPod accessories into the Apple Expo showroom: the iKaraoke, iTalk Pro, and TuneCenter. The iKaraoke allows you to fade-out the vocals from your favorite songs and replace 'em them with your very own self-stylings over the included mic. The results can then be pumped out your stereo over the wire or wirelessly via the embedded FM transmitter. Three levels of reverb are available to improve your vocals for, well you know, when the sake just ain't enough. The new iTalk Pro boasts not just one, but two built-in mics for 16-bit stereo or 8-bit mono audio recordings. But you'll need to drop an external mic into that 1/8-inch jack, jack, if you need greater stereo separation. Last, and certainly least, is the TuneCenter -- another of those iPod media docks with remote controls. Only this dock sports a "full-slate" of Internet Radio stations -- bonus! No pricing has been announced, or availability, but we've got some bigger snaps after the break and that's gotta count for something.

At some time around 10:22AM Pacific Time, by our estimations, Steve Jobs introduced to the world iTunes 7, Apple's latest and greatest hardware / software / service glue for their best-selling online media initiative. Everyone cheered its album art functions, enhanced video resolution, and movie downloads; a few of us, though, silently winced on behalf of QTFairUse / myFairTunes6 users everywhere, who'd been successfully stripping the DRM off their Apple FairPlay protected files for a few weeks now. Then, at 6:23PM PST, QTFairUse version 2.3 came out, which added (beta) iTunes 7 support. By our approximation that means it took Igor (no, not Iger) about 8 hours and 1 minute to crack the latest major iTunes update. Not bad, but we were hoping for something in the 4-6 hour range; it would seem to us the anti-DRM community is resting on its laurels. Don't make us crack the whip, guys!

EA, PopCap, Namco to provide content
Apple has finally announced a range of games for its iPod media player.
Downloadable directly through the iTunes store, titles will cost US$ 4.99 (4 euros) and be playable on fifth generation iPods.
The full list of titles includes familiar names, with Pac-Man, Tetris, Mahjong, Bejeweled, Zuma, Cubis 2, Texas Hold 'em, Mini Golf and Vortex all now available.
With Namco, Electronic Arts, PopCap, FreshGames and Apple itself supplying content, the move has been instantly seen as a confident stride into the casual games market, a view fuelled by the fact that iPod is already ubiquitous with mobile entertainment.
Although some third-party coders have ported popular games in the past, the move from Apple confirms a commitment to the games market, as rumoured back in May of this year.

Vivendi Games has announced the acquisition of mobile games developer Centerscore in a deal which covers the studio's back catalogue as well as titles currently in development.
Centerscore, whose previous titles include Spin Blocks 360, Alone: The Horror Begins and Amy's Hangman, will continue to be based in San Mateo, California. CEO Oliver Miao will remain in his role, reporting to Vivendi Games Mobile president Paul Maglione.
Vivendi Games' chief strategy and marketing officer, Cindy Cook, described the acquisition as "another step in our plan to be among the top mobile publishers in the industry".
Maglione added: "Centerscore's imaginative games have consistently been top sellers, and the diverse lineup of titles, particularly their excellent range of casual games, is a welcome addition to our existing portfolio."
"What we found most exceptional about Centerscore is the company's ability to successfully build a team of designers, artists, developers and testers from the ground up, and to execute the creation and distribution of great games from under one roof."
The news follows the publication of Vivendi Games' latest financial report, which revealed a profit increase of more than 12 per cent during the second quarter of 2006. Financial terms of the deal will not disclosed.

Activision has inked a deal with InfoSpace allowing the mobile firm to develop titles based on its Tony Hawk and Gun franchises.
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, Tony Hawk's Project 8, Gun and a selection of retro titles are all set to appear on mobile handsets soon.
"There's no denying the market penetration of cell phones, which makes mobile games a great way to extend our console brands," said David Anderson, senior director of business development for Activision.
"InfoSpace is a leading mobile content, distribution and delivery company, and we look forward to building a successful relationship that puts some of our top titles in the hands of mobile gamers," he said.
The move comes just days after EA announced a similar deal with Nokia, and VU games acquired mobile developer Centerscore.
"As mobile technology continues to evolve and with the increasing availability of 3G handsets, mobile gaming now enables more powerful and dynamic gameplay experiences," added Stephen Davis, president of mobile and online media for InfoSpace.
"We're excited to work with Activision to develop the coveted Tony Hawk brand for mobile as well as their most popular sport and adventure titles, offering fans the chance to test their skills and enjoy their favourite games while on the go," said Davis.

When we were deep inside Maestro Jobs' reality distortion field on Tuesday, all these new additions to iTunes 7 seemed like significant improvements over its previous version. But not quite 48 hours later, all is not quiet on the iTunes front. Specifically, users on Apple's web forums and our own tipsters are reporting that some new nanos aren't being recognized in Windows iTunes 7, music being played through iTunes 7 sounds "scratchy" at times, CoverFlip doesn't always entirely download properly, and there are allegations that iTunes 7 has become, slow, bloated, and a resource hog. Some of us here at Engadget who have installed iTunes 7 haven't noticed any bad playback or other slowdowns, but have been dissappointed that very few of the albums on our machines have successfully downloaded album art. Furthermore, The Sydney Morning Herald called iTunes 7 a "lemon" yesterday and went on to report that: "Both Mac and PC users appear to be affected by the glitches being reported, and numerous different threads on the Apple discussion forum have described a range of technical issues." If Apple doesn't do something about this pretty soon, people might start calling it iCan't -- as in: "I can't play my music anymore."

Apple's recent annoucement of iPod games has visions of Doom and sugarplums dancing in our heads. I mean, we know you can already technically do Doom on the iPod. But we're looking for a solution that doesn't require us to install some godawful Linux OS.
Unfortunately, it looks like the iPod's game SDK is extremely closed... homebrew at this point looks like a virtual impossibility on a stock iPod:
Modifying the games is difficult at best, if not impossible, because of the checksumming of every file in the bundle, and then the certificate against the manifest.
Game resource files, particularly audio, aren't obfuscated and can be extracted successfully.
Homebrew is probably an impossibility at this point because of the expectation of a signed cert from Apple.
The fact that there are platform identifiers in the plists makes me wonder what Apple's future plans entail. Maybe this would just be for later iPod revisions, or maybe they're just looking forward. Still, quite interesting.
Cathode Tan, where we snagged this from, points out how absurd it is that while Microsoft releases an SDK for the 360 and Sony updates their PSP firmware, Apple won't even acknowledge the homebrew community one way or another. Then again, Apple has never made any attempt to capture gamers — that's why every Apple Intel Mac owner has Boot Camp installed.

Microsoft has announced that its Zune digital music player will be released in the US in time for Christmas.
Unveiling more details of the player, which it hopes will rival Apple's iPod, Microsoft said the Zune will come in three colours - black, white and brown.
To be manufactured for the US giant by Japan's Toshiba, it will come with a three-inch (7.6cm) colour screen.
The Zune will also have wireless connectivity, allowing nearby users to exchange songs and photos.
'Competitively priced'
Microsoft hopes the Zune, which will also be able to play videos and includes a radio, will eat into the iPod's more than 75% share of the digital music player market in the US.
The Washington-based software giant said it will also introduce a competitor to Apple's iTunes music library and online store called Zune Marketplace.
This online store will allow users to choose to buy songs individually, or alternatively sign up to a subscription service to download a certain number of songs for a flat fee.
The initial Zune will have a 30-gigabyte memory, but Microsoft said it could not yet provide an exact release date or price for the product, only that it would be priced "competitively" with rivals.
"The digital music entertainment revolution is just beginning," said J Allard, a Microsoft vice president of design and development, who is in charge of the Zune line of products.

It won't give you as many retro-gaming options as the GP2X, but if you're satisfied with a little classic NES action as a break from your daily grind, Odna's upcoming VX737 PMP looks like it should suit you just fine. Of course in addition to emulating that massive library of 8-bit goodness, the PMP will also handle MP3, OGG, FLAC, and WAV audio, as well as AVI, MPEG-4 SP, XviD, and DivX video, which you can view on the player's 2.5-inch QVGA screen. What's more, it appears that Odna's "inspiration" knows no bounds, with the VX737 sporting a curiously familiar menu system so you'll feel right at home (check after the break). On the storage tip, you'll get 512MB built-in, though there's no mention of an SD slot or other means of expansion; there's also no word on pricing or availability, but as with oh so many of these foreign products, it seems safe to assume that we won't be seeing this reaching our shores anytime soon, lest they get their asses sued by a tag team of Sony and Nintendo.

Richard Bannister has released news today of an update to 26 of his Emulators, heres the release news/info:
Updates are now available for twenty six of my emulators. The major change in this update is improved file handling code, which at long last allows those wonderful people in Japan to use Kanji in their file names. I spent three weeks in Japan last year and immediately fell in love with the country; hopefully I'll be able to get back there in a few years.
As always, there are a number of fixes that affect all the different emulators:
Fixed several endian bugs; of particular note, screenshots and audio recordings now work correctly on Intel Macs.
File extensions are now included by default when saving screenshots or audio recordings.
Worked around issue preventing keyboard from working in full screen mode in Arnold and Frodo.
Resolved a number of situations where keyboard input would be registered even though the emulator window was not active.
(Enhancer) Resolved a visual glitch in the Preferences->Filter dialog.
(Enhancer) Updated eSellerate engine to prevent dead items being left in trash every reboot.
(Enhancer) Fixed issue where occasionally serial numbers might be rejected.
(Enhancer) Fixed endian bug preventing network play from working between PowerPC and Intel.
There are also some updates to individual emulators:
BSNES: In sync with the latest release for PC.
fMSX: Added support for RAM expansions. The English version of Snatcher now runs.
Handy: Ported to Xcode and recompiled as Universal Binary.
Horizon: Added option not to remap colon key.
Nestopia: Added file filtering to the open dialog.
Nestopia: Added sound sample support for assorted Japanese games. Nestopia will prompt you for the files if you choose one.
Nestopia: Added support for drag & drop with NSF files.
Nestopia: Added support for muting the five main sound channels independently.
Nestopia: In sync with the latest release for Windows.
SMS Plus: Resolved an error with the keyboard labelling.
That's all for now. Enjoy.

OS News suggests 10 classic titles that could work well with Apple's scroll wheel interface on the newly announced iPod games format. Their picks are as follows:
Lunar Lander
Puzzle Bobble
Tempest
Marble Madness & Neverball
Asteroids
Gyruss and Tube Panic
Chess
Video Poker
Bomberman
Any driving game (It's a WHEEL for crying out loud!)
Tempest and Marble Madness would be nice, but no Street Fighter II? Maybe Apple could add a six button controller like Sega did for the Genesis version of the game...

If Nike has its way, we'll have to start working physically for our in-game rewards, today's issue of G2 from The Guardian reports. The sportswear giant has filed a patent for a "game-pod" that would sit in the shoes of gamers and, via a pedometer, pressure sensors and/or GPS, would measure the amount of exercise they undergo. Then, via a detachable chip, it would communicate that to your console or PC, bumping up character attributes or abilities, or unlocking bonus items as long as you haven't been slobbing around.
According to the patent, the game-pod could be configured to measure heart rate or even blood oxygen content, thereby foiling potential dodges such as driving your trainers around in a car.
At present, the system - whose appearance will be timely, given that "experts" have recently been all over the newspapers asserting that games are contributing to the obesity epidemic - exists only as a patent, and Nike is not yet commenting on any tie-ups with games companies. It did, however, hook up with Sony to create Eye Toy Kinetic. But then again, playing games like Tennis on the Nintendo Wii involves an awful lot more physical activity than anything you can play using a conventional joypad.

Most of the Apple fan base is busy chatting about the latest iPod releases, the possibility of laptop spec bumps, and the when-the-hell-is-it-coming-already iPhone, but not all is well and good in Macland, as certain folks have been experiencing all sorts of problems with the just-released iTunes 7. Issues range from broken podcasts to unrecognized hardware to crappy-sounding audio, and although some of the bugs have seen successfully troubleshooting from crafty consumers, everyone is still waiting on word from Cupertino as to how it's going to address the multitude of problems. Well for those of you who've been forced to listen to your old transistor radio for the last few days, AppleInsider has some potentially good news, claiming that people with "ties to Apple" say that the company is well aware of the many glitches (as well as the public outcry) and are "toiling feverishly" on an update -- as in, both Mac and Windows users can expect version 7.0.x ASAP. We bring you this news not only to buoy your spirits in these times of despair, but also as a heads up to certain individuals in the programming community; after all, since QTFairUse struck back so quickly at iTunes 7, don't think that Steve and friends aren't spending at least some of their time trying to break that annoying little piracy-enabling patch for good.

Perhaps those rumors of Microsoft re-jiggering their Zune pricetag after catching wind of the iPod price drop are true after all. Zune team member David Caulton has come out with a word on his Zune blog stating that "Zune won't be undercut on price by iPod," in response to a commenter who stated they'd heard the Zune was going to be pricier than the iPod. It's not exactly explicit, but we're not quite sure how much more strongly he could hint at a $249-or-less Zune price without ripping his NDA to shreds. In fact, David's straight-up statement might be its biggest detractor -- we'd be surprised someone with full-on insider info could actually manage to get out a word like this without a few men in black suites taking him down.

After Apple launched the not-exactly-6G iPod at the "It's Showtime" event, we had plenty of fun dissecting the new nano and handling the appropriately dubbed 5.5G iPod, but we couldn't help but notice how the dear ole U2 iPod was apparently uninvited to the refresh party. Apple has finally got around to bringing the long-standing "special edition" 'Pod to 5.5G specs, as it now sports the "brighter display," extended battery life, and a new model number (MA664LL/A) to boot. Aside from getting the 5.5G goodies (and a coupon for an "exclusive" half hour U2 video download), the real news is the price drop; while the engraved signatures of Bono and friends (and that blaze red click wheel) still demand a premium, the coinage required to pick up a 30GB U2 iPod sank from $329 to $279 -- a whole $50 -- to fall more in line with its standard $249 sibling. For a second there, we just figured the U2-branded 'Pod was stuck in a moment it couldn't get out of.

You probably remember our post this past weekend citing a Wired Listening Post story which claimed that Apple was trying to claim ownership of the word "podcast"; we even got -- OMG -- Slashdotted. Well, Wired Listening Post has now printed Apple's letter to the company in question, Podcast Ready, and it seems that the real situation is a bit murkier than our original post might have led you to believe. While Steve and friends are definitely gung-ho about Podcast Ready abandoning the use of "myPodder" for its automation software (claiming that it is "very similar phonetically to Apple's iPod mark and appears to have been chosen intentionally to capitalize on the fame and goodwill of Apple's marks"), the letter goes on to say that "Apple, of course, has no general objection to proper use of the descriptive term 'podcast' as part of a trademark for goods and services offered in the podcasting field." What it basically comes down to is this: Apple objects to "Podcast Ready" trademark applications which cover "portable listening devices" and "software to manage digital content for portable media players," but is fine with an application for that branding which only refers to podcasting in general. It's still confusing as hell, since it's not entirely obvious where one would draw the line between "podcasting in general" and podcasting as it relates to portable listening devices and software for managing podcasts for portable media devices, but either way what is very clear is that Apple is determined to protect its turf and prevent anyone from using the words "pod" and "podcast" in any manner they believe might possibly infringe on its trademarks.
