Our kissing cousin over at Kotaku found some news and we love him for it. Basically, Gizmondo has closed its UK office and is moving everything over the US where, presumably, those folks will also be fired in the next month or so.
Just got some interesting news from a source, Gizmondo has just given their UK staff at their studios in Cheadle 28 days notice. The company has decided to relocate their development studio to the U.S. and just sack the UK studio staff, including not a few recently hired Uni grads.
Not to late to return your Gizmondos, folks.

EHeretic is a port of the Raven/Id first person shooter game Heretic. It incorporates pieces of heavily modified code from several of Peter van Sebille projects. This port has been verified to work on A920 phones, but is expected to work on A925, A1000, P800, P900, & P910 phones as well.
EHeretic has working 8 channel sound, games can be saved and loaded, the screen can be configured for landscape right or left mode, and many of the phones buttons are configurable and usable in the game.
Heretic WAD files should be placed in "\Media files\document\heretic" folder.

GoBoy SE is a Gameboy emulator for the Sony Ericsson Pxxx mobile phone series. It is based on the GoBoy800 done by AnotherGuest and DanVan, and GoBoy for Series 60 done by Wildpalm. The emulation core is based on GNUBOY by Laguna and Gilgamesh. It features full gaming experience in several modes to take full advantage of the mobile phone capabilities.
Features:
Direct video buffer implementation at emulator core.
Scaled video size to enjoy the big screen size available in Pxxx.
Auto adjust on video mode changes, H/V or Flip open/Flip closed (some improvements to be done, synch fails)
Horizontal screen and Vertical screen game modes (this allows the usage of the Pxxx like a game pad due to its shape)
Sound on/off options at menu. Turning the sound off will save cpu cycles.
Keypad with diagonals (this was previously done by DanVan, but been unable to locate the source code, so had to do it from scratch).
To do:
SOUND SOUND SOUND, due to reasons i have not explored, sound fails badly under load, this is probably due to inneficient code or lack of cpu power.
Work needs to be done in order to synch video mode changes and the video output, this will prevent the dirty stuff on the screen at some times.
Customizable keys.
Maybe Gameboy Advance support some day?
Any comments or ideas will be very welcome.

Following the release of financial results from its second fiscal quarter, PortalPlayer hinted at a few of its forthcoming music player technologies and release dates to analysts and the media.
For its June quarter, iPod chip supplier PortalPlayer announced a profit of $6.3 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, on revenues of $44.6 million. The results rose sharply from its year-ago quarter, in which the company reported a $880,000 loss. In its announcement, the company hinted at a few plans for the second half of the year.
"We have completed the design win activity for our customers' exciting new models intended to ship in the second half of 2005. In addition, we worked with the supply chain to prepare our operations for significant demand in the second half of the year," said Gary Johnson, president and chief executive officer of PortalPlayer. "During the second quarter, we also accelerated our investment in innovative wireless technologies that we believe will help fuel our growth in 2006 and beyond."
Johnson went on to say that revenues for PortalPlayer's third quarter of 2005 are likely to benefit from new flash-based chip designs. The company currently supplies Apple with controller chips for its hard disk drive (HDD)-based players, while Sigmatel is responsible for the chips inside the flash-based iPod shuffle

Thought Out.biz has recently decided to change names of their popular iPed dock to simply Ped. The company says that:
“The best interest of the long-term success of the now-named Ped product line is recognition away from the coincident relationship of iPed to the iPod. This new recognition of Ped branding will show the true value of our products. Our products work with many other devices on the market as the designs are intended to achieve greatest result with iPods but not limited to them only.”

Jeff Hurst, 24, and Gianni Lee, 19, love their music so much they listen to it on their iPods for hours - maybe too many hours.
Hearing experts wonder whether the frequent use of these devices, particularly with the inserts that sit within the ear, are contributing to noise-induced hearing loss.
"The incidence of hearing loss is underappreciated," said Thomas Willcox, associate professor in otolaryngology at Thomas Jefferson University. "We're going to have a boom of this population because of the increased exposures that previous generations haven't had." About 12 percent of children and teens in the country - more than 5 million - have noise-induced hearing loss. Hearing loss in general has doubled in the United States in the last 30 years.

Howard Sherman is hoping to convince people that their iPods and cell phones aren't just for music or phone calls. Instead, he'd like you to use yours to fight dragons and solve murder mysteries.
A lifelong computer-game player, Sherman spends his professional life talking up the nostalgic charm of old-fashioned text-based games. His company, Malinche Entertainment, has produced several titles similar to old Infocom text games such as the legendary Zork. While the company has found a niche market selling these retro games for computers, Sherman is hoping to exploit new devices to reinvigorate the genre.

“PortalPlayer, whose chip powers the iPod, offered a bullish forecast on Monday, suggesting music player sales could remain strong for the second half of the year.
The San Jose, Calif.-based company forecast that its sales could rise to between $50 million and $60 million for the quarter that runs through September. That's greater than some analysts had been forecasting.
"We are excited about the momentum that is building for the second half for both existing and new customers," CEO Gary Johnson said during a conference call with investors.
For the past quarter, which ended June 30, PortalPlayer reported it earned $6.3 million, or 25 cents per share, on revenue of $44.6 million. The company had a loss of $880,000, or 64 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.
However, PortalPlayer shares dropped more than 1 percent in after-hours trading, changing hands at $26.30, down 35 cents from the close of regular trading. Ahead of its earnings report, PortalPlayer had ended regular trading at $26.65, a drop of 41 cents, or 1.5 percent.”

Ok well it’s not really called the iCupholder, but it’s pretty much what it is. Apple has recently patented a device similar to Belkin’s TuneDok Car Holder for iPod, in which Apple described it as being:
An “apparatus that can secure an electronic device and be inserted into a conventional cup holder. The cup holder, for example, is inside of an automobile."
Similar to Belkin's (US)$30 TuneDok, the Apple iPod dock employs adapting sleeves that fit around the base of the apparatus and can be used to adapt the device holder to cup holders of different sizes and shapes.
The base of the unit -- the part which gets inserted into the cup-holder -- includes a winding spool for managing the cable used to connect the iPod to an automobile's audio system. By contrast, the TuneDok uses a "desecrate cable-management clip.”

For those of you who might not be aware, Linux has been made available for installation on the iPod. Using Linux on your iPod allows for a vast number of expandability and customization, while still allowing the iPod to be used as it was intended. If you are running Linux on your iPod, there are tons of games, emulators, and applications that you can run on your iPod.
The project is currently focused at porting the uClinux kernel to the iPod, but also includes a GUI version named Podzilla. If you are not sure if iPod Linux is for you, you can check out the FAQ table at iPodLinux.org. Here is a quick quote from iPodLinux.org on the current compatability of their project.
Our bootloader allows for you to choose between either iPodLinux or Apple's firmware each time you turn on your iPod. iPodLinux is currently safe to install on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods. We are currently accepting Donations towards the purchase of a fourth generation iPod for us to test with. The fourth generation click wheel, mini, U2, Photo, and Shuffle iPods are NOT currently supported. For the latest information on 4th gen development, read the Fourth Generation Project Status.
Are you ready to give it a try? Head on over to our Installation section. We currently have user-friendly installers/uninstallers for both Mac OSX and Windows. If you're lucky enough to be running Linux, you will find our Documentation full of invaluable resources for experimenting with your iPod.

Motorola and Apple are set to debut the much-anticipated iTunes phone next month at UK's "V Festival," an event sponsored by Virgin Mobile, which will be one of the first mobile carriers to offer the phone. Citing an analyst report, TheStreet.com reports that the "iPod-inspired music phone -- which Motorola twice pulled from introductions earlier this year, apparently under orders from Apple chief Steve Jobs -- will debut in the U.K. next month." Quoting American Technology Research analyst Albert Lin, the report says that the planned venue is a four-stage Virgin Mobile-sponsored "V Festival" concert, which takes place from Aug. 20-21. Earlier this week, Motorola told analysts that the phone would be unveiled at a separate music event within the next 66 days and would be available in the third quarter.

A Welsh psychiatrist has claimed that some iPod users are experiencing what he calls "musical hallucinations".
Dr Victor Aziz said that the effect can occur when people spend many hours listening to the same songs. The hallucinations are characterised by a song " playing" constantly in the head, according to the psychiatrist, and the effect has caused sleeping problems for some of his patients.
"People find they can't sleep and can't think properly," he told the Evening Standard. "Having a song in your head every now and then is quite normal, but musical hallucinations can be quite distressing."

Man, we’re not sure what prompted this one, but the rumblings over at HP of late between Carly leaving, internal restructuring, and 14,000 layoffs has resulted in yet another casualty: the HP iPod is no more. Finally. From the sound of it, HP took the initiative to exit their relationship with Apple, which seems a little silly to us since if they did work out that price cut issue from before, really all HP had to do was slap their name on someone else’s product, maybe share some distribution channels, and watch the bling roll in—OEMing the iPod, what could be more perfect? Well, goodbye HP iPod, we’ll miss you. Eh.

IPOD fans can now play Gameboy games on their IPOD via the Ipod Linux and a cool alpha release of a Gameboy Emulator:
Heres some details:
Only works on 4g ipods
Speed is now at about 70%.
Controls work by touching the wheel at different positions. This makes pressing two buttons (areas of the wheel) at the same time a problem.
The screen is cropped, meaning pixels are lost around the edges.

Microsoft may be battling the iPod on the digital music front, but on the gaming side Redmond has embraced its Apple rival. The Xbox 360 will enable users to connect a portable music player, including an iPod, to the system and browse or play back music through the console's interface while watching 50 visualizations.
"We see the Xbox 360 as replacing your CD player in your entertainment center, but also as the best digital media amplifier available," said Xbox 360 product manager Barry Steinglass. "Your PC is a great place to manage your music, but it's not always the best place to enjoy it. With Xbox 360 you've got one central place to listen to all your music on the best sound system in the house."
