One of the world's top suppliers of cellular infrastructure, Nokia Siemens, has dropped some juicy knowledge today that Apple's new iOS 4.2 update supports a technology called network-controlled fast dormancy that better optimizes how the phone connects to the network. The company touts that it's a win-win -- better battery life, less unnecessary network utilization -- and also points out that Nokia implemented the technique in all of its smartphones starting earlier this year. Since network-controlled fast dormancy is a feature that benefits the network itself as much as it benefits the individual user, knocking out two power players like Nokia and Apple (over half of new smartphone sales, NSN points out) should make a big dent.
Interestingly, NSN seems to have arrived at this discovery through "tests" it conducted, not by working with Apple on implementing it. Sure, we don't pretend to know all the interactions that occur between manufacturers, carriers, and suppliers during a phone's development, but it certainly seems to us that Apple would benefit by engaging infrastructure companies early and often as these baseband updates come together -- particularly as it seeks to keep a tight lid on the very congestion issues that network-controlled fast dormancy is designed to help eliminate. Either way, it's interesting to see how quick Nokia Siemens was to probe for the change this time around.

The Dev-Team is warning about a potential issue with ultrasn0w for iOS 4.2.1 on iPhones with the 06.15.00 baseband. An increasing number of users with that version of the baseband software are reportedly losing GPS functionality when they unlock their device. The blog post says they are looking for the root cause but haven't found it yet, and notes that it's not a problem for all or even most users with that baseband. Still, to be on the safe side, they're suggesting people should just not expect GPS to work if they want to unlock iPhones with the 06.15.00 baseband using ultrasn0w:

Remember how the Librarian of Congress announced that jailbreaking your phone was legal and not a violation of the DMCA? Yeah, well, tell that to Mohamad Majed, who has already spent over a year in jail and has now been pressured into pleading guilty to criminal DMCA violations for jailbreaking phones for use on other carriers.

Apple has been awarded a US patent for a display system that would allow multiple viewers to see a high-quality 3D image projected on a screen without the need for special glasses, regardless of where they are sitting. Entertainment is far from the only field in which 3D can enhance the viewing experience: others include medical diagnostics, flight simulation, air traffic control, battlefield simulation, weather diagnostics, advertising and education, according to Apple's US patent 7,843,449 for a 3D display system.

BBC.com managing director Luke Bradley-Jones has dropped some knowledge on the TV-loving world by revealing that the iPlayer's global launch will be on a "pure paid subscription model," to be followed thereafter by partnerships with advertisers on "free" areas of the British TV catchup service. The US is specifically named as one of the first new markets for the venture, which is expected to go live in the middle of next year. In addition to knowing you'll have to shell out to get your fix of Top Gear, Doctor Who and, erm, The Foods that Make Billions, you'll also be wanting to know that the first platform for the iPlayer outside the UK will be none other than Apple's iPad. What is it with Brits and the iPad?

The iPhone Dev-Team has released redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Windows and Mac with a new tweak that avoids the issues like battery-drain and overheating that plague unlocks. Rather than using redsn0w to hacktivate, this version lets users click a "Deactivate" button to remove the patches that affected battery life and push notifications, allowing @sbinger's SAM tool to do the hacktivation.
Sam (@sbinger) Binger, the developer of TetherMe, came up with what he calls Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM), which tricks iTunes and your iPhone into generating official activation tickets even though the unlocked device carries an unofficial SIM. As a result, the lockdownd patches that were required to make hacktivation work with redsn0w are no longer needed, and unlockers can use SAM to hacktivate without taking the battery life hit.

Apple is apparently sticking to its latest story that white iPhone 4s will be available in the spring: new signs revealed by 9to5Mac show Apple is advertising the model for sale once again. When the white iPhone 4 disappeared from the Apple Online Store a couple months ago, many observers interpreted that as a quiet obituary for the long-awaited model. Still, a spring launch would put it just a few months ahead of the expected iPhone 5, at a time when demand is low.
The white iPhone 4 may have been the subject of more stories than any nonexistent product in history. Apple announced it along with the black iPhone 4 at the official launch in June and immediately telegraphed that it would be delayed for a month

A software keyboard may sound anathema to Palm, with its rich history of wonderful QWERTY keyboards, but you had to feel it was coming, what with the wild consumer adoption of slate devices and, you know, the economy these days. Well, after a short history of hints in webOS 2.0's code and a longer history of hacks, a full-on Palm-developed software keyboard has been found in shipping webOS 2.0 devices. It takes a little bit of a hack and a restart, and apparently it's buggy as well, oh and you have to use the physical keyboard to enter the Opt+Sym+K command that opens the virtual keys. Still, none of these shortcomings are going to stop us from sketching out slick, slim slate phones in our diaries, translating that understated elegance of the Pre 2 into a screen-dominated form factor with our unbridled imaginations, leaving the Pre's cramped hardware keyboard in the past as we sprint into a glorious future of tangible webOS 2.0 market share and maybe a threaded email app or something. Sorry, we're done. Check out a video of the keyboard in action while we wipe the drool off our chins.

It seems that folks hoping for the Apple's Camera Connection Kit to solve all their USB-related iPad problems just can't catch a break. First the kit was nearly impossible to find, and now we're seeing a slew of user reports saying that iOS 4.2 has made the USB portion of the camera kit nearly useless for many USB devices that were previously supported. As 9 to 5 Mac reports, the problem seems to boil down to the amount of power that can be emitted from the iPad's 30-pin connector -- it used to be 100mA, but iOS 4.2 appears to have cut that down to just 20mA, presumably in an attempt to conserve battery life. The big issue there, of course, is that everything from USB keyboards to microphones and even some cameras no longer work, and there isn't much for users left to do other than to hope that Apple brings back support in a future update. Feel free to share your own tales of woe in comments, or let us know if you're having problems with the iPad camera kit.

PC World reports that women are more likely to buy an iPhone for their next smartphone purchase, while men prefer Android devices. According to data collected in October 2010, 31 percent of women wanted to buy an Apple iOS device next, followed by 22.8 percent interested in a Google Android device while among men preferences were reversed with 32.6 percent of men interested in an Android purchase and 28.6 desired an iOS phone. 'So where is the extra appeal of Android to men coming from?' asks Tracey E. Schelmetic. 'More male-targeted commercials that emphasize cool gadgetry versus usability? More techno-macho phone brand names like "Droid"? Extra advertising on the Spike channel by phone makers using the Android platform?

Chinese manufacturing industry site the DigiTimes reported a rumour that Foxconn, manufacturers of Apple’s iPad products, have been told they will ship the iPad 2 ‘within the next 100 days’.
The DigiTimes often cites sources within Taiwanese manufacturers and it’s via these sources that the DigiTimes is reporting on the news from mainland Chinese manufacturer Foxconn. Reportedly the initial shipments of iPad 2s are forecast at the 400-600,000 unit mark.
The 100 days statement means that Foxconn has until the end of February to ship the iPad 2. DigiTimes sources claimed that production was planned for January but due to delays in testing of the firmware of the next-generation tablet, Apple had postponed final manufacturing.
Foxconn has since been diversifying manufacturing operations in part to combat the pressure cooker of Shenzhen staffing and the negative publicity surrounding a number of suicides by Shenzhen-based employees. However the new operations in Chengdu are only just gearing up so iPad 2 manufacturing will be mainly based in the Shenzhen factories, said the sources.
Interestingly, the DigiTimes also cited sources that claim that the iPad shipments have outstripped channel sales which they said was a possible indication of over stocking although, the sources said, there were no signs of production order reductions.
Shipments of first generation iPads are expected to scale down in January in order to exhaust inventory prior to the launch of the iPad 2 in April, they said.

You may not be able to get Android 2.3 loaded in any official capacity on your Nexus One yet -- or any other phone, for that matter -- but Google's 2.3 SDK is now available, which means there's an emulator attached, too. As with most development emulators, this one's a stripped-down subset of the apps and settings you'd see on an actual retail device; basically, all that's left is the bare minimum Google figures its developers are going to need to code apps. Be that as it may, we noticed a few things that stuck out:
Overall, the UI changes are extremely subtle, and generally for the better. We prefer the new looks for the status bar, keyboard, and menus over their Froyo equivalents.
We couldn't get a sense of the performance improvements -- the emulators is slow as molasses for us and really has zero bearing on how it'll perform on devices.
When you reach the end of a scrolled list, the side of the list that has reached the end glows orange briefly, presumably to make it even more obvious that you're at the end. Even the browser does this -- it's an interesting effect that we kind of liked.
The miserable default camera UI is exactly the same. Expect manufacturers to continue to replace this with wild abandon.
The Gmail app isn't included in the emulator, so fear not when you're looking at the screen shot of the unthreaded messages -- that's the "standard" email app.
The fingertip-sized markers for highlighting text work quite well, including in the browser. They seem to consistently disappear after a few seconds and automatically highlight and / or copy the text in between the markers; we're not sold on whether we like that behavior.

IndustryGamers reports on new research from Interpret, which shows that more and more people are turning to their phones for game time, leaving the DS and PSP behind. 43.8% of the phone/DS/PSP gaming market plays games on phones, which represents a significant 53.2% increase over the past year. At the same time, Interpret says that the proportion of those who play on the DS or PSP has fallen by 13%. The company notes, 'Gamers appear to be defecting from their handheld gaming devices to phones to get their gaming kicks: a full 27.2% of consumers who indicate that they play games on their phones only (and not on the DS/PSP) actually own a DS or PSP, but do not actively use the device(s).' Notable games industry analyst Michael Pachter also recently commented that handhelds continue to decline and Sony's much rumored PSP2 would be 'dead on arrival' as smartphones continue to gain steam.

News via http://0xff.akop.org/2010/12/07/spar...2-20-released/
A new version of Spark 360 is now out. I decided to rename the application, since there seems to be some confusion between the new iteration, and the former pre-OpenSpark iteration.
New features in this release:
» New parser that’s more tolerant to missing or badly formatted profile data
» Added current MS Point balance under Account Summary
» Fixed Message List sorting bug
» Fixed Message date stamp bug
» Usability improvements
» Theming improvements (GoogleTalk-ish borders for gamerpics; other minor changes)
I had considered enabling installation to SD for this release; however, based on Google’s guidelines, I decided not to do it. Running the application from SD card will create severe issues for the future notifications and widgets while at the same time offering marginal benefits.
As usual, find it at Android Market.

Matt Miller of ustwo has said that fragmentation is by far the biggest problem holding back Google's Android platform – saying that it makes developers work harder than they have to for Apple's iOS.
Speaking as part of a panel on how to be a successful mobile developer at the Evolve in London event, Miller made clear that standardisation has to be a key point on Google's agenda if it intends to attract the sort of success that Apple has with the App store.
"At the moment it's fragmentation," replied Miller, when asked what he saw as the biggest problem with Android.
"There are so many different devices for Android that you have to put so much more effort into doing it right – and if you're not going to do it right, don't bother doing it.
"Because of that fragmentation it makes it so much more of a hassle for us – it tires and drains you."
Ustwo is the studio behind mobile app MouthOff, which has sold over 100,000 copies on iPhone, whilst the Android version has only just reached 4000 sales - although Miller admitted to the Android version being marketed "less aggressively".
Also speaking on the panel were Hand Circus' Simon Oliver, Neonplay's Oli Christie and Matthew Wiggins of Wonderland Software. Wiggins was emphatic in his support of Miller's argument, calling the fragmentation a "complete nightmare" which Google must address.

The idea of using an iPhone or iPod touch as a universal remote has been tossed around for years, but it's always required either a finicky external dongle or an extravagantly expensive home automation rig. Instead, we've been treated to a host of single-device remote apps for everything from FiOS, DirecTV, Comcast, and Dish Network DVRs to the Apple TV to the Boxee Box to... well, you name it. A little company called Peel has a dramatically different idea, though -- it's launching the Peel Universal Control system, which is designed to take your iPhone or iPod touch head-to-head with universal remote heavyweights like Logitech's Harmony system.
The company is made up of a bunch of former Apple engineers, and their solution is extremely novel: instead of attaching a dongle to the iPhone itself, they're controlling your A/V rack using a pear-sized (and Yves Behar-designed) wireless IR blaster that's supposed to live quietly on your coffee table. The blaster (called the Peel Fruit) connects over ZigBee to a tiny network adapter (the Peel Cable, also designed by Behar) that attaches directly to an open Ethernet port on your WiFi router -- a two-part hardware setup that seems fussy, but is designed to obviate the need for software configuration during installation, and allows the IR blaster to run for nine months on a single C battery.

Flash on an iPad? No problem, and neither is QuickTime on a Samsung Galaxy Tab -- assuming you're running both from a virtualized Windows 7 PC using OnLive's new app. OnLive may have originally pitched itself as a streaming games service, but founder Steve Perlman revised his ambitions at the D: Dive into Mobile conference today, showing off a host of Windows 7 programs (including 3D modeling software Maya, above) running on the pair of ARM-based tablets. Like always, OnLive requires a nearby server and fast internet connection to function adequately, and the apps themselves would need touch controls, but Perlman said it's actually easier to deliver apps than games since they're less sensitive to lag. OnLive didn't provide a date when we can expect full cloud functionality, but you can get a sneak peek at a pared-down version right now -- the brand-new OnLive Viewer app, which lets you spectate games in progress (and will eventually let you play them) is now available for iPad.

Want a super-durable iPad case that also lets you tether your tablet with a steel cable? MacLocks calls the iPad Lock and Security Case the world's first locking iPad case. The heavy-duty plastic case both locks to protect the iPad and has a kickstand for upright viewing, as well as providing a mount point for a sturdy steel cable that can be looped around any fixed object, like a table. It's $39.95 for the case alone, or $64.95 for the case and cable together, and volume discounts are available.
The iPad's small size makes it an enticing target for thieves. Unlike MacBooks, though, the sleek design of the iPad does not allow for a K-slot or any way to lock it down. That's where the Lock and Security Case comes in.

A tweet from @MuscleNerd last night revealed a workaround he's done for an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 on the fourth-gen iPod touch. Using saved SHSH blobs from 4.2 beta 3, the method doesn't use expose any of the known holes that are used in the current set of exploits: it's a "backup plan" to the userland method that @comex is working on.

Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror, the classic point-and-click adventure sequel to equally classic point-and-click adventure Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars, is coming to iOS devices, just in time for the holidays.
Following the success of the original game - in Director's Cut guise - on Apple's mobile devices, Revolution Software is poised to unleash Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror - Remastered, continuing the adventures of George Stobbart and Nico Collard as they investigate a mysterious ancient Mayan artefact.
The Smoking Mirror - Remastered is set to get a similar makeover to its updated predecessor with new animated facial expressions, improved background and animation graphics, plus audio and visual enhancements to cut-scenes. The game also features Game Center support, a new context-sensitive hint system, an interactive digital comic, courtesy of Dave Gibbons, and Cloud saving by Dropbox. That last one means you can load and save your game across multiple devices - a feature we hope more developers introduce to their titles.
According to Revolution's official site, we can expect iPhone, iPad and iPod versions of the game "very shortly" with the remastered edition heading to PC and Mac early next year.

Looks like some Chinese manufacturers think they know what the next-generation iPad looks like -- we've seen numerous pictures today of supposed cases all with the same features: a headphone jack, a hole for a camera on the back, just one dock connector (not two), and a mysterious slit on the bottom. So, what could that be? An SD card slot seems unlikely since the cutout predominantly strips away the back of the case, not the bottom edge. Our source speculates it might be the antenna -- if all the manufacturers saw was the aluminum case design, the cutaway could've been made as a precaution, not knowing exactly what it's for. (Then again, the antenna for iPad 3G is found on the top of the device). We're thinking it might be for a revised speaker design -- the cutout is located just above and behind the location of the current iPad's speaker. Maybe we'll find out for ourselves by April, and maybe we won't -- consult your own crystal ball for that one.

It's still not an actual product just yet, but upstart Snaptick has given CNET an early look at its eponymously-named internet TV system, which it says will challenge the likes of Google TV and Apple TV. The company's hook is that it simply delivers the "full web" to your TV, which can be controlled using either your phone or a laptop. In the case of the company's iPhone app, you can actually flick content from your iPhone to the TV, and even have multiple people control the same TV with their respective iPhones. Things get a bit more complicated when it comes to the actual device, though. It seems the company still isn't sure what form it will take -- it could be a separate set-top box like the prototype above, or it could be built-in into a Blu-ray player or TV. Given that state of things, it shouldn't come as much surprise that there's no indication of a price or release date, but the company is now accepting applications for a private beta, and you can get an idea of what might be in store in the video after the break.

A German security analyst is about to unveil a new jailbreaking process that will make iPhones much more secure. Stefan Esser, a security consultant and application developer for SektionEins, has found a way to support Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) in iOS, and has developed a new jailbreak tool - to be called antid0te - to implement it, making iPhones much more resistant to malware attacks. The tool will be announced at a security conference next week and should be available soon thereafter.
ASLR works by randomly assigning data to memory to make it tougher for attackers to figure out the location of critical operating system functions, greatly increasing the difficulty of designing reliable exploits. ASLR was built into Windows Vista over three years ago, and is supported in Windows Phone 7, as well as (to a limited extent) in Mac OS X.

For months we've all dissected patent applications while simultaneously digesting rumors pointing to the same end - plans to make future generation iPhones all about improved security and advanced user functionality. Today, further evidence suggests Apple is preparing future generations of the iPhone to be far more sophisticated than any model thus far, particularly with regard to voice commands. Our friends at Apple Insider have uncovered an Apple patent application called "Contextual Voice Commands" the goal of which, ostensibly, is to improve the voice control of an iPhone/iPod touch and, subsequently, make the device more user friendly, reliable, and efficient.

Hey, it's December, what else are you going to do but monger rumors of the next iPad? Reuters has rounded up no less than four sources from within Apple's component suppliers, all expressing their belief that the hallowed tablet will be refreshed some time in early 2011. A pair of the tipsters could only go so far as to say that production at places like Wintek and Simplo is expected to ramp up in the first quarter, while the other two were more decisive in identifying the cause for the extra activity as Apple's next tablet iteration. As to the future iPad's camera or cameras, one source says it'll feature both a back-mounted and a front-facing module, with Largan and Genius identified as having received new orders from Cupertino for churning out imagers. Notably, the latter is currently also supplying the iPhone 4's photon collector and there's no confirmation that whatever they produce will inevitably land in an iPad 2, but the tea leaves seem to be in agreement: parts are targeted for a February shipment in preparation for an April iPad refresh. Whether the new slate arrives at that time, however, will be another matter altogether.

Without explanation, Apple has disabled a jailbreak detection API in iOS, less than six months after introducing it. Device management vendors say the reasons for the decision are a mystery, but insist they can use alternatives to discover if an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad has been modified so it can load and alter applications outside of Apple's iTunes-based App Store."

And now, some news that is simultaneously awesome and depressing. Hudson is (officially) bringing Turbografx-16 games to iPhone and iPod Touch "this winter" in a free TurboGrafx Gamebox app. It'll launch with a library of $3.99 games, and will include one, the Olympic-style World Sports Competition, for free. Each day, Hudson will select one game from the library and make it available through the app for a free three-minute trial.
Hudson didn't announce the initial lineup, but we're going to go out on a limb and guess it'll include Bonk's Adventure and Military Madness. And knowing that many people missed out on the TurboGrafx-16, we're happy to see the games being brought to such a popular platform.
And there's the terrible part. Last time we checked, the iPhone continued not to have buttons. So that's $4 each for a potentially great game to be rendered totally unplayable.

Several reports have surfaced that multiple iOS gamers who downloaded a free Chinese-language role playing game called 帝國 Online (the English version of the app is still in beta) have experienced fraudulent activity in their iTunes account - specifically, unauthorized in-app purchases. According to a report from Apple Insider, Apple is now investigating the matter.
Despite relatively decent user ratings, one gamer posted the following: "BEWARE. It will tap your iTunes account $ wise down to nothing. I had $50 in my account and this app on it's own took $49.00 from my account." Apple has reportedly refunded the alleged fraudulent in-app purchases claimed by some users.

Following the runaway success of Cydia on iOS - with 10% of all iPhone users, about ten million people, having used the marketplace at least once - Jay "saurik" Freeman is planning to bring Cydia to the Mac OS X platform very soon. At the 360 MacDev conference yesterday, Jay said the new app store would be ready for the Mac "within weeks," positioning it to go head to head with the Apple Mac App Store expected sometime in January.
Jay has been evangelizing the Cydia vision for some time now, with high-profile talks at TED and elsewhere. Rather than merely an alternative to the iTunes App Store, Cydia is positioned as a resource for users to customize their devices to work in the way their owners want them to work.

Apple has quietly dropped a jailbreak detection API from the latest iOS 4.2 update. This feature was only introduced six month ago. It is somewhat puzzling that Apple would choose to remove this feature from the iOS so soon after introducing it to the platform. Apple and the jailbreak community have been playing a game of cat and mouse ever since the App Store was first introduced in 2008.
The jailbreak detection API is part of Apple’s mobile device management (MDM) API that was released back in June with the introduction of iOS 4.0. The detection API works by asking the operating system if it has been compromised in any way. Jailbreaks usually change operating system files to gain access to the iOS, so that users can install non-approved apps. Apple routinely issues updates to circumvent these exploits requiring jailbreak developers to find new ways of gaining access to the iOS.

It's no secret that Apple's been keen to monitor the lot of naughty jailbreakers, but it turns out the company has recently shelved iOS 4.0's jailbreak detection API with no explanation given. While this has little effect on the average user, Network World explains that this is bad news for enterprise IT and MDM (mobile device management) vendors, who will now have one fewer channel for checking whether a user's iOS device has been jailbroken and thus become vulnerable to attacks. That said, apparently this isn't a huge loss for the MDM vendors, anyway; but the real question is why drop the API now? Could its presence alone be a threat? We'll probably never know.
Fear not, though, as some folks have put jailbreaking to good use. The Register reports that come Tuesday, Stefan Esser of Sektion Eins will demonstrate a tool called antid0te, which reportedly adds ASLR (address space layout randomization) onto jailbroken iOS devices. In a nutshell, ASLR randomizes key memory locations to make it more difficult for certain attacks to locate their target data. According to the famed white hat hacker Charlie Miller, this technique is already present on Windows Phone 7 and desktop Windows since Vista, but Apple's only dabbled with it on OS X and not on iOS. Now, this doesn't mean that jailbroken devices will be fully safeguarded, but some protection is better than no protection, right?

Next update to Spark 360 should bring one of the most requested features – message notifications. The feature is mostly complete; currently being tested.
I’m also working on another Android app; its purpose should be fairly obvious from the following (very much alpha) screenshots.
Spark 360 should be updated some time within the next week; I don’t have a date (or a name, for that matter) for the other app.

In what increasingly appears to be a case of mistaken identity, a Dutch developer has threatened to release the source code of the SHAtter exploit, depriving the jailbreak community of a valuable tool. After the developer of TwitPanic, @iHaz3, had his site brought down apparently by a DDOS attack, he threatened to release the SHAtter source as some kind of revenge, but has since held off on carrying out the threat.
The story can be traced following @iHaz3's Twitter feed. TwitPanic.com was crashed by what the developer believed was a DDOS attack set up by @ih8sn0w after he and @iHaz3 had "issues." @iHaz3 then tweeted "TwitPanic.com is attacked by a organized DOSS hit......next week SHATTer will be posted on twitter."

To understand POWDER, you should first understand roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:
Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)
Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.
Random games. A roguelike is a dungeon crawler where no two games are the same. The maps are different, the items are different, there are no guaranteed win paths.
Permadeath. You die, that is it. No restoring a savegame. Good roguelikes delete your save game after loading them. This is compensated by the replayability of the game.
Complex interactions of properties. While the commands for a roguelike are simple, the potential interactions are not. My favourite example is equipping a silver ring as a weapon in order to damage a creature vulnerable to silver, but not one's other weapons. [Editor: This matches the Hack branch of the roguelike tree, not the Angband branch]
Steam rolling monsters. If a critter is in your way, and weak, you shouldn't even notice it is there.
For more information about roguelikes there is the Rogue Basin, a Wiki documenting this genre, and the Temple of the Roguelike, a newsite tracking developments in the field.
Having defined Roguelike, POWDER is easy to describe: A Roguelike designed for the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS and Now Apple Iphone
Just in time for the new, high res, iPhones, POWDER's tiles have caught up to the previous, low res, iPhones. The 12x12 Akoi Meexx tiles have been hand smoothed for a better landscape experience.
My old file server died. Fortunately, I was already in the process of migrating to a new one, so it really couldn't have been better timing. Unfortunately, my attempt to restart the PSP toolchain failed. I'll have to give this another try later, but this release is way too delayed already.
Note the iPhone version, as usual, won't show up right away. First, because even with immediate submission there is a delay for approval. Second, because one reason this release kept being delayed was a real frustrating bug where the keyboard wasn't showing up half the time. I think I fixed it, hence this release, but I want to do some more testing on my commute.
When the iPhone version does hit the light of day, I hope players on that platform will appreciate that you can now email your character dumps. This provides a way to get a record of your win without resorting to pen and pencil.
The delete key should work on Macs. (Konstantin Stupnik)
Typos in the animate forest description fixed. (Paul Nguyen, Kender)
You can no longer petrify or stone to flesh quest items. (Lorenzo Batallones)
Items that fall in a hole will not be revealed up on the next level's map. (Kender)
Zapping a wand of invisibility at yourself when you are already invisible from a permament source no longer reports "You are invisible." (Kender)
No longer falsely get system shock if a creature you possessed, but released when it was polymorphed, is finally slain. (Mental Mouse)
The Regenerate spell now works for creatures with No Regeneration, as was intended. (Mental Mouse)
Flesh golems can once more regenerate. (They lost this in the no-regen sweep) (Mental Mouse)
Giant Spiders have defences better fitting their explevel. (Mental Mouse)
The earth hammer is now made from stone as you'd expect. (Kender)
The spell Summon Daemon now spells Daemon like the rest of POWDER. (Mental Mouse)
Typo fixed in Golden Tridude description. (Mental Mouse)
Clarify cave troll description. (Metnal Mouse)
s/byte/sting/ for scorpion description. (Mental Mouse)
Clarify butcher skill description. (Mental Mouse)
Water elementals no longer leave corpse.
Eaten intrinsicly poisonous corpses now has a significantly shorter timeout. (Kender)
Attacks which deal multiple types of damage in the same hit will have damage reduction applied to each of the types, rather than only to the first type. (Mental Mouse)
Vampire bats will no longer chase players which they aren't interested in. (Kender)
Option to email character dumps on the iPhone to get them out of the black box.
Searching due to intrinsics will put Searching on the status line, and multiple manual searches will report Seached x10.
Improved the Akoi Meexx 12x12 tiles, for less ugly pixels when in landscape mode on the iPhone.
Makefiles for Linux have $(LDFLAGS) added.
The torches in the Lomaka tiles have been fixed to show up in the correct hand. (Martin Rittweger)
The Wish command now includes the ability to take on a monster's form and stats, so you can play as a monster if you wish. (Robert Barber)
On level up, the number of Piety points you have in each class is displayed beside the class name so you can better judge which class to pick. (Matthew Wyatt)

Android Emulator is a Android Emulator available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
Quote:
Android Emulator v1.5 is released. Android Emulator is a QEMU-based application that provides a virtual ARM mobile device on which you can run your Android applications. It runs a full Android system stack, down to the kernel level, that includes a set of preinstalled applications (such as the dialer) that you can access from your applications. You can choose what version of the Android system you want to run in the emulator by configuring AVDs, and you can also customize the mobile device skin and key mappings. When launching the emulator and at runtime, you can use a variety of commands and options to control the its behaviors.
The Android emulator mimics all of the hardware and software features of a typical mobile device, except that it can not receive or place actual phone calls. It provides a variety of navigation and control keys, which you can "press" using your mouse or keyboard to generate events for your application. It also provides a screen in which your application is displayed, together with any other Android applications running.
To let you model and test your application more easily, the emulator supports Android Virtual Device (AVD) configurations. AVDs let you specify the Android platform that you want to run on the emulator, as well as the hardware options and emulator skin files tht you want to use. Once your application is running on the emulator, it can use the services of the Android platform to invoke other applications, access the network, play audio and video, store and retrieve data, notify the user, and render graphical transitions and themes.
The emulator also includes a variety of debug capabilities, such as a console from which you can log kernel output, simulate application interrupts (such as arriving SMS messages or phone calls), and simulate latency effects and dropouts on the data channel.

Apple says its Game Center is more than just a social gaming network for iOS users - it's an increasingly powerful game discovery tool.
The service offers connected features including leaderboards and achievements. However, with tens of thousands of games available on the App Store, Game Center is emerging as a way for people to discover the good ones.
"Game Center is on everybody's device, and so many games are integrating it now. It's a great way for people to see what their friends are playing, and discover new games that way," says Apple's VP of product marketing Greg Joswiak.
He was talking to ME at a London briefing this week, showcasing the latest crop of iOS games.
In September, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that more than 1.5 billion games and entertainment apps had been downloaded from the App Store, showing how games have become an important focus for the company.
Games showed off this week included LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, Jenga, Cut The Rope, Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner and Rage HD, along with upcoming title Gears.
The selection reinforced the point that Apple is keen to highlight games that make use of key iOS hardware features, including the gyroscope, camera and A4 processor.
Joswiak also said value remains important to iOS users. Rage HD currently costs Ł1.19 on the App Store, compared to the Ł25-Ł30 RRP for PSP and DS titles.
However, this week has also shown that iOS gamers aren't just looking for cheap deals: $5.99 title Infinity Blade grossed more than $1.6 million on the store in a matter of days.

Football Manager 2011 has arrived on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
It costs Ł6.99 - almost quadruple the (lowered) price of Championship Manager 2011 for iPhone.
But Football Manager 2011 has "unrivalled realism" and is, according to the blurb, "the most in-depth football management game in the App Store".
Features of note are three active countries per season; customisable player roles; more formations; in-game tutorial and a built-in real-world stadium finder.
Sports Interactive also claims to have paid special attention to the quirks of Apple's machinery to tailor its game accordingly, i.e., the same thing rival Beautiful Game Studios said about Championship Manager 2011.
But which is better?

Never underestimate the power of Dreamcast to live on long past its intended expiration date (which, if you ask Sega, would have been around September 2007). The final flagship console from the Haus of Sonic is survived by a multitude of emulators propagating across a multitude of platforms... and well, here's another. Drk||Raziel has posted some videos showcasing the work in progress of nullDCe for Android (on what we make out to be a AT&T Samsung Captivate). The footage ranges from buggy (Soul Calibur) to pretty smooth (Crazy Taxi), but again, no one's calling this a finished product.

Don't worry, nothing to be concerned about if you have a jailbroken iDevice. Your should be safe to connect and sync if you please, just don't update your firmware by "Accident". There has been no word of any issues blocking DFU mode restores, at this point in time.
Apple has released iTunes 10.1.1, an updated to iTunes 10.1 which was released in mid-November, of which now includes some bug fixes for the NVIDIA GeForce 9400 and 9600 video card on macs, not to mention a fix for those that were having issues syncing music videos.

Future US soldiers may have government-issue iPhones to go with their boots and rifles. If a new modernization plan is successful, soldiers will have their phones and service plans paid for by the Army, allowing them to communicate securely and use military apps for training as well as live intelligence data. However, securing these phones is a challenge, and Apple and Google so far have been unwilling to open up API access to their security functions.
Lieutenant General Michael Vane, the director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) suggests that the Army would issue smartphones just like any other piece of equipment a soldier receives.

The Wall Street Journal has come out with an article where they examine 101 popular smartphone apps and show that 56 of them transmit various types of information including unique phone IDs, age, gender, postal codes, and location to ad companies. The article also including responses from infringing app makers and talks about the pressure that some developers feel to share even more information, like Max Binshtok, creator of the DailyHoroscope for Android, who has been encouraged by ad-network executives to transmit users' locations.

Microsoft offer free console hit to help boost sales for new mobile platform.
US consumers who purchase any new Windows Phone 7 will receive a free Xbox 360 game.
Microsoft launched the promotion to help drive sales for its new mobile operating system, which launched last month. So far, sales have been slow.
As part of the deal, gamers can choose from one of four titles: Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, Fable III or Halo: Reach.
The offer is available with any Windows Phone 7 device, with Microsoft’s official webpage highlighting the Samsung Focus and HTC HD7.
It also points US consumers towards the Buy One Get One Free promotions currently running at AT&T and T-Mobile.

It's oftentimes hard to gauge the proliferation of electronic devices into everyday life while looking at them from our little bubble of early adopter enthusiasm. A much better vantage point for these things can be provided from the arms of government, among the most change-resistant places on any planet, and American legislators are letting us know that tablets, not the children, are our future. Texas Representative Henry Cuellar recently took the House of Representatives floor with an iPad in tow, which broke with the chamber's etiquette if not its rules. He's not alone, however, in hoping that the House dispenses with its Omega Man-style prejudice against electronics and permits their widespread use by Representatives. If nothing else, distributing bills of law electronically should make a nice dent in the "multimillion" dollar budget currently set aside annually for printing. Let's make it happen, guys.

Apps are sending your personal data to online trackers in violation of Apple's privacy rules. That's the conclusion of a Wall Street Journal investigation, which determined that a number of popular apps - such as Pandora and MySpace - transmit device and demographic data to advertisers without first asking the user for permission.
The Wall Street Journal tested 101 apps for iPhone and Android and found that 56 of them transmitted unique device identifiers (UDIDs) to a flock of advertisers without asking or even informing the app user. 47 of the evaluated apps send location data and five (including Pandora) transmit your personal details such as age and gender. Apple says that they vet apps before approving them on the App Store, but the Journal found that at least one - Pumpkin Maker - had managed to skirt the rules.

There has been some news about the 4.2.1 jailbreak lately, but the unlock has been missing in action for some time. However, we got a little ray of light about ultrasn0w on Twitter from Egyptian baseband hacker Sherif Hashim, who worked on the 3.1.3 unlock. He's still keeping it on the down low - English-only speakers would have missed it - but he's indicated the unlock should be ready in about a month.
Sherif Hashim found an exploitable baseband crash that could bring an unlock for basebands 05.14.02 and 02.10.04 back in November. Very little has been heard since then, and nothing definitive as to the timing on a new ultrasn0w for iOS 4.1 and 4.2. One impatient unlocker sent Hashim a tweet in Arabic, saying he was going away for military service on January 16 and asking if the unlock would be ready by then.

In case you missed the story this past week, a big victory was delivered to the jailbreak community in Spain. While the news has nothing to directly do with Apple or its products, the news stills serves to advance jailbreaking overall - a reality most in our community would celebrate regardless. In this particular instance, however, a court in Barcelona ruled that - despite the best arguments to the contrary by Sony - owners of the PlayStation 3 should not be prohibited from jailbreaking their consoles.
Quote:
Part of the reason the court ruled against Sony, according various Spanish language blogs, is because Sony disabled the “OtherOS” functionality earlier this year. As many readers are likely aware, the “OtherOS” feature allowed you

Microsoft has decided to finally dish out some sales figures for its new Windows Phone 7 platform, but alas, these are not the sales figures we are looking for. Instead of giving us the juicy number of actual devices sold to end users, the Redmond crew has provided a neatly rounded figure of 1.5 million sales to mobile operators and retailers. That tells us that the mobile industry is cautiously buying into Microsoft's new OS, and it'd be foolish not to, but it doesn't really educate us on the relative success of the platform's launch -- 1.5 million units is a tiny, tiny number when you consider the platform launched on 10 devices on over 60 carriers in over 30 countries. All that Microsoft's Achim Berg would say is that early sales have been "in line" with expectations.

News via http://www.scummvm.org/news/20101219/
The last ScummVM release in this year just has been released. This is a maintenance release and is aimed to fix several important bugs since 1.2.0.
Particularly we added Hungarian and Brazilian translations of the GUI, and made bugfixes to the Cruise, Groovie and Lure engines.
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, ...), many of Sierra's AGI and SCI games (such as King's Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, ...), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment's children's SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.
You can find a full list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often. Among the systems on which you can play those games are Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Dreamcast, PocketPC, PalmOS, AmigaOS, BeOS, OS/2, PSP, PS2, SymbianOS and many more...
For a more comprehensive changelog for the latest experimental SVN code, see:
http://scummvm.svn.sourceforge.net/v...mmvm/?view=log
1.2.1 (2010-12-19)
General
- Add Hungarian translation.
- Add Brazilian Portuguese translation.
Cruise:
- Fixed a problem with Raoul appearing when examining the Book
Groovie:
- Fixed a regression that made the Russian version of T7G crash.
Lure:

Football management games have always been about the great players of the present - the Ronaldos, Rooneys and Messis of this world.
Now, that's all changed. Championship Manager developer Beautiful Game Studios has created a football management game set in the seventies, introducing great players of the past - the Brookings, Keegans and Bradys of this world.
iPhone, iPod touch and iPad game Championship Manager Legends: 1970's is available to download now from the Apple app store. It costs Ł1.79, and screenshots are below.
"Filled with nostalgia and history, you take on managing a team back when football was all about Spangles and sheepskin jackets," reads the official blurb. "A sporting decade that produced some memorable names, which for the first time in Champ Man history you can control and bring to life.
"The 1970's was an era of fantastic footballers including Johan Cruyff, Kenny Dalglish and Luis Arconada. Now for the first time in Championship Manager you can manage these legendary players and their classic teams," said BGS boss Roy Meredith.
"We've also packed the game with authentic news stories from the decade so you feel fully immersed as you play through from 1970/71 – 1979/80."
The launch of Championship Manager Legends is yet another result of Beautiful Game Studios' commitment to iPhone and online development.
In October it launched its first specialised iPhone and iPod touch Championship Manager game, ChampMan 11.

Nothing says truthiness quite like anonymous Chinese sources telling next generation iPad secrets to a Japanese blog lacking any notable successes on the professional rumor mongering circuit. Nevertheless, the Apple rumor sites have jumped all over the story like a Bay Area cop on prototype thief. So here's the dirt, which certainly seems plausible in its specificity: a 3-mm reduction in bezel width, same 9.7-inch display size, and flattening of the back allowing it to rest wobble-free on a desktop. Mac Otakara also explains that there's a "wide-range speaker" covered with "metal mesh" (that's their render above) occupying the cut-out we saw at the bottom of those supposed next-generation iPad cases. The overall unit is said to measure 239 x 186 mm compared to the current iPad's 242.8 x 189.7 mm footprint. Suspiciously, the site was unable to reliably confirm the existence of front of rear facing cameras but does claim that the new iPads will begin shipping from factories in January -- timing that aligns nicely with previous rumors. After the break you'll find another purported iPad 2 case with yet another render of the speaker grill design.

We reported a couple weeks ago about an investigation showing that apps transmit personal data to advertisers despite Apple's rules against doing so. Now Apple has been hit with a lawsuit that accuses them, along with the developers of some popular apps, of revealing users' information without their consent. If the suit is granted class action status, millions of people could receive money from the companies.

Although the second generation iPad isn't likely to debut for several more months, a steady stream of reports about the iPad 2 continues to keep the forthcoming Apple tablet refresh in the forefront of tech news. On Tuesday, word broke that the iPad 2 will join Wi-Fi-only and UMTS models with a new (Verizon-compatible) CDMA version.
From DigiTimes:
Quote:
Apple is expected to release three versions of iPad 2, supporting either or a combination of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA, for 2011 with mass production to start as early as the later half of January. Apple will ship about 500,000-530,000 units to channels in January with shipment ratio of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA models at 3:4:3

The sixth generation iPod nano has been hacked by developer and hacker James Whelton. James was able to hack the nano by bypassing its cache comparison and installing a Springboard hack. For now, this only allows you to delete one of the pre-installed apps and create a blank spot. This may not seem like much, but it does demonstrate that the nano can be altered. James is quick to point out, however, that the nano has not been jailbroken, “I do not have root access over the device. I did not “install” an app. I figured out how to remove them and insert a blank space into the springboard.”
Mr. Whelton also found references to possible additions to the nano: “Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calendar events and so on

Apple has supposedly elevated its 1st quarter iPhone shipment goals by a substantial margin according to reports surfacing Monday morning. Initial estimates for 1st quarter 2011 iPhone shipments fell into the range of 19 million units. That already-teeming number has allegedly been upped by Apple to approximately 21 million.
Naturally, this situation begs the obvious question: What could possibly be driving the ballooning shipment goals of Apple for its popular iPhone, especially since the "newness" of the iPhone 4 has already worn thin? According to DigiTimes, the raised estimate reportedly includes somewhere between five and six million CDMA iPhones, fueling a long-standing rumor that need not be addressed further without any concrete evidence yet again.

Apps, apps, apps! Everywhere you look, more apps. Both Android and Windows Phone 7 have reportedly crossed a couple of round number milestones recently, giving us a decent idea of the maturity gap between the two. Microsoft's brand new OS with an old OS' name has rounded the 5,000 available apps corner -- that's according to two sources keeping track of what's on offer in the Marketplace -- while AndroLib's latest data indicates Android's crossed the 200,000 threshold when it comes to apps and games taken together. We're cautious on taking either of these numbers as hard truth, particularly since AndroLib was reporting 100,000 Android apps when there were only 70,000 -- but they do provide rough estimates as to where each platform is in terms of quantity, if not quality. Now, where do you think each will be this time in 2011?

Not only is Eldar Murtazin the venerable editor-in-chief of the Mobile Review blog, he is also widely regarded as a reliable fountain of insider knowledge in the tech world. Given his reputation, many are taking his latest report as a confirmation of Apple's plans for the iPad 2 - at least with regard to one particular new feature. According to Murtazin, the second generation iPad is definitely getting a USB port.
Quote:
Talked with colleague which working with some ODM vendors connected with Apple. He is research guy. According to his sources iPad2 will have usb port.
The present lack of a USB port has been an habitual thorn in the side of many gadget gurus and tablet aficionados.

Apple is looking for a few good iOS developers to help expand the company's cloud-based offerings. This much can be derived from the two new job postings on Apple's website. The first posting says Apple "is hiring outstanding operations engineers to deliver and manage the next generation of hosted infrastructure serving Apple products and services." The other opening indicates that Apple needs "experienced software engineers to work on distributed computing for data with non-trivial properties, and efficient online services for data access."
Similar to past job postings at Apple that vaguely suggested the possibility of future products (like the iPad) and new services, there are, indeed, times when job listings effectively point to the mysterious projects and other top-secret efforts underway in the tech labs of Cupertino. Naturally, these latest postings (which quietly went live just before the Christmas holiday and are finally getting noticed)...

[Steven Troughton-Smith] figured out how to push signed firmware through to the iPod Nano 6g. This is accomplished by modifying iRecovery to recognize the device on the USB after forcing a recovery mode reboot. So no, this doesn’t mean that it has been cracked since it checks the firmware you push and reboots if it’s not approved. But if you can figure out how to craft a custom image that passes the check you can call yourself a jailbreak author.

We'll openly admit we never knew what African Blackwood was until Gresso started applying the stuff to its line of extremely luxurious cellphone mods, but now we can't imagine a new product from the Russian company without the 200-year old timber making an appearance. And sure enough, the Gresso iPad's rear is composed almost entirely of Dalbergia melanoxylon, broken up only by the insertion of an 18-karat gold Apple logo. Strangely, in spite of its extravagant constituent materials, this design is a very restrained, dare we say, classy, affair. It goes on sale on New Year's Eve at an unannounced price, but you know what they say: if you have to ask or you have to work for a living, you probably can't afford it.

Sooner or later, George Hotz - the hacker known in our circles as Geohot - will release another jailbreak for iOS devices. While there's little else to report on Geohot's jailbreak front, there is growing talk about what it will be called. And it may very well be Geohot himself who indirectly spilled the beans.
Eric Calouro, editor and CEO of Erictric Media, reported Wednesday evening that Rubyra1n may the name of Geohot's next release. Why the speculation? Well, it turns out that the domain "rubyra1n.com’ was registered with the same information found on the WHOIS page as Geohot’s other well-known domains. So could the name brought us the blackra1n and limera1n jailbreak methods be readying Rubyra1n? That's the buzz at the moment.
The prospective arrival of "Rubyra1n" would have likely remained the most talked about news in our community today if not for the Twitter update earlier on Thursday... [

Skype has updated its iPhone app to include video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G. With Skype 3.0 you can make two-way video calls to other iPhone 4 and 4th gen iPod Touch users. iOS users without front-facing cameras can still receive video, but they can only transmit audio for obvious reasons. You can also use Skype in landscape mode as well as portrait mode with this version.
Making video calls to Mac and PC desktop users is now possible with this updated version as well. You can now stay connected in a more personal way even if you are at either end of the country. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that data charges...

Seems it didn't take long to hack the Windows Phone 7 marketplace. Quoting WPCentral: 'For developers, the weakness in Microsoft's DRM for Windows Phone 7 applications has been well known for quite some time, and there have been calls for Microsoft to address these concerns ... Since then, a "white hat" developer has provided WPCentral with a proof-of-concept program that can successfully pull any application from the Marketplace, remove the security and deploy to an unlocked Windows Phone with literally a push of a button. Alternatively, you could just save the cracked XAP file to your hard drive. Neither the app nor the methodology is public, and it will NOT be released ... It is important to note that this was all done within six hours by one developer.

Joe Mailer wanted to download an iTunes movie recently and his Apple TV told him it would take two hours. When he switched his DNS resolver settings, the download time dropped to less than 20 seconds. Apparently, iTunes content is served by Akamai which uses geolocation based on the IP address of the DNS request to determine which server should provide his content. When you use Google or Open DNS to resolve the Apple domain name, all the requests to Akamai appear to be coming from the same location and they're all directed to the same server pool, overloading that pool and causing the slow downloads. The solution: Be wary of using Google or Open DNS when downloading iTunes files or similar large files. Use your own ISP's DNS servers instead or run your own resolving DNS server.
