We don't know what it'll be, but Palm is teasing an announcement for later today. As stated on the official Palm blog:
"check back later today (or follow palm_inc on Twitter) for an update direct from the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco."
Palm assures us that this isn't some kind of lame April Fools. As such, we're hoping for a release date (by country) and price or at the very least a free, general release of the Mojo SDK. Whatever it is, you'll find the details here just as soon as they are announced.

We've seen some interesting ways people have tried to meld iPhone with car, but this one might top them all. Meet Jon's Mazda RX-8, controllable from anywhere in the world using an iPod touch over WiFi. As demonstrated on video, his custom web app can be used to lock and unlock the doors, start and stop the engine, and open the truck. A telemetry window provides data such as fuel level, battery voltage, RPM, speed, and temperatures. It's even got a GPS so you can track the car's wherabouts with Google Maps. All of this is accomplished with computer hidden in the trunk, hooked up to the on-board diagnostics, and equipped with a 3G modem to stay constantly connected to the interwebs. There's no indication on whether he plans to take the mod further, but if so, we can only hope it involves some well-placed cameras and a tilt-controlled steering mechanism. We pity the foolish thief who tries to steal this "haunted" ride. Check out the video demonstration after the break.

The rest of the mobile industry might be gearing up for CTIA to start, but Apple's phone elves are toiling away -- iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2's just been released to developers, along with the go-ahead to start developing for push notifications. Thankfully, beta 2 also apparently includes a number of stability and performance enhancements, which will hopefully make our tester phone tolerable again -- we've been restarting beta 1 basically every day since we sacrificed it to the hands-on gods. Devs and beta testers know what to do to snag the upgrade, let us know how it goes!

According to folks over at Android Community, Google has begun to pull tethering applications from the G1's Market. One of the contributors to the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app claims that the company is citing distribution agreements with carriers as the cause of the takedowns. In their words:
Google enters into distribution agreements with device manufacturers and Authorized Carriers to place the Market software client application for the Market on Devices. These distribution agreements may require the involuntary removal of Products in violation of the Device manufacturer's or Authorized Carrier's terms of service" Google Developer Distribution Agreement
Of course, this should come as quite a surprise, given statements T-Mobile's Cole Brodman made to us during the G1 launch last year, and Google's seemingly rampant interest in being the de facto open source mobile OS. It's not clear at this point if this is an isolated incident (possibly related to the root nature of the app), or just the beginning of a more widespread move. Google (and T-Mobile to some extent) -- we await your response.

It's finally here, and even a few minutes early. Skype for iPhone is now available in the US iTunes store, free of charge. We've heard great thing from the folks in Japan who've been fiddling with it for the last twelve hours, and so far it's sounding pretty good for us, too, with only minor hiccups. Not sure if it's a glitch, but despite what we heard earlier, we seem to be able to dial out while on 3G and not over WiFi (at least running OS 3.0 beta). Hit up the read link for quickest route to the app store page, and let us know what you think. Betcha wish you could ditch that AT&T voice plan now, huh?
Update: We're getting reports the app is crashing for jailbroken iPhones -- and possibly non-jailbroken ones as well. We just got our first denial when dialing out over 3G via a popup notification, but it only happened once and we were back to old habits one call later. We did experience a brief period where no sound was coming through, but that might have something to do with using OS 3.0 and was remedied by restarting the phone.
Update 2: So far, it looks like dialing over 3G's only working for those with OS 3.0 beta, but unfortunately all of us in that situation are now suffering from frequent crashes and loss of audio. Things seem to be going smoothly for those running the latest non-beta firmware, but the calls only work over WiFi. That said, when using the app as intended (non-beta firmware over WiFi), audio quality was surprisingly good, far better than any third party apps we've used.

The jailbreakers have managed to keep their speed record intact. Just one day after Apple releases an update to the iPhone OS 3.0 beta, QuickPwn updates its wares to support the new firmware. According to the related writeup, it should work with all iPhone / iPod touch models. After going through the jailbreaking process, you'll need to open icy and follow a few more steps to finish the job. As usual, download at your own risk, and for now, crack is for Windows users only.

Looks like all that pent-up demand for SlingPlayer for iPhone has caused the suits at Sling to go mad with greed -- the company just posted up a page saying that owners of every older SlingBox save the Slingbox PRO will have to upgrade to a Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD in order to stream to iPhones. Yes, this is totally ridiculous: we've been told that the limitation is purely money-driven and that previous builds of the iPhone client worked just fine with older Sling hardware -- hell, if a Palm Centro can stream off the original Slingbox, there's no reason at all the vastly more powerful iPhone can't hack it. Sling's offering a $50 credit to owners of older hardware, but honestly, we can't say some token coupon is going to take away from the bitter taste of a forced upgrade here -- unless Sling comes up with legitimate technical reason for crippling such highly-anticipated software like this, we'd say it's about to piss off a lot of formerly-happy Sling customers.

Well, it's not quite the release date and price you were hoping for, but it's definitely something. Today Palm -- via a short keynote at the Web 2.0 Expo -- announced that the company would begin taking names and numbers on the webOS dev site for potential developers who will receive an "early look" Mojo SDK. And that's starting right this moment... as in now. That news alone would be big, but reps we spoke with said that the SDK would be made available to developers that the company will be cherry-picking as early as tomorrow. So if you were looking to get into the Pre app game, here's your first big chance.
In addition to the SDK news, Palm is introducing a new set of "integrated cloud services" for developers (called Mojo Messaging Service) which will use a standardized publish / subscribe system to allow data to be bounced from the "cloud" to devices. Basically, it looks like this is Palm's play for some of that push buzz -- though the indication is that this service can and will be used for bigger tasks as well.
Finally, the company announced that third-party developer MotionApps will be making a Palm OS emulator available for purchase to coincide with the launch of the Pre. The application will be utilize the mass storage mode of the device to allow for drag-and-drop of PRCs, though according to the press release, the emulator "won't be able to leverage core webOS functionality," meaning that you probably can't expect pure bliss across all of your applications, particularly those with roots that go deeper into phone databases and the like. What's interesting to note about this app is that it's being built on more than just the standard webOS SDK -- an event which Palm called "unique." They went on to assure us that this was a one-off to allow for emulation, but we're thinking they might want to reconsider that policy by factoring in the clamor for serious gaming on a device like the Pre. You can check an image of the emulator after the break.
So, no pricing, no release date, but lots of movement on the developer front -- which is big news if you're a company trying to launch a completely new operating system. Still, we're getting a bit antsy with all this waiting... it might be time to throw everyone a bigger bone than that tired "first half of 2009" line, guys.

No, this isn't an April Fool's joke. President Obama met today at Buckingham Palace with the Queen, and our forward thinking commander-in-chief brought along a little tech for gifting purposes. Obama presented Elizabeth II with an iPod containing video from her 2007 visit to the States. In return, the first family received what is apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries to the Palace -- a silver-framed photo of the Queen and her husband. At a glance, it seems like Obama has a thing for gadgets (and related media); he recently handed off a set of DVDs featuring classic American films to Prime Minister Gordon Brown... who was unable to play them due to incorrect region encoding. Regardless, the Queen appears pleased with the music player, telling the President during their 25 minute tea that she "Finally has something to listen to [her] Pantera records on."

Russian hacker Vortex has released a beta version of a 3.0 Jailbreak. It is packaged in the Dev Team's windows Quickpwn software and reportedly works on the iPhone 1st gen, iPhone 3g, and iPod Touch 1st gen. It unfortunately does not install Cydia instead it only installs Icy. However you can install SSH via Icy and then install Cydia manually . On the plus side the download is only 3.2 mb because it is only packaged with Icy.
Be warned this is NOT Dev Team approved. This 3.0 Jailbreak while using the Dev Team's Windows jailbreak software and method is not using files packaged by the Dev Team.

Only a two weeks or so after iPhone 3.0 beta 1 was released Apple has seeded iPhone 3.0 beta 2 to developers registered in the iPhone Developer Program. This beta is very similar to the last one with one major addition: push! The feature that Apple promised AGES ago has finally been implemented with iPhone 3.0 beta 2 allowing developers to use the APIs to begin developing push applications. As expected this beta also has been updated for better stability and performance.

Remember the blurry blob of pixels reputed to be Samsung's entrance to the Android handset market? It was initially expected to come into focus sometime after July, but word from Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, a Samsung VP, is that the phone will see international release a month earlier, in June. He has also confirmed that two other Google-powered handsets are in development by the company, both set for US release sometime in the second half of the year. The phones are said to be "totally different" from each other and will be so at odds they'll have to go to separate networks or risk creating a hilarious feud of the type we haven't seen since TV's Perfect Strangers. Both are said to offer considerable enhancements and tweaks to Android that should distance them HTC's offerings, but will the two ever stand a chance of getting along? Don't be ridiculous!

Longtime Palm fans are gonna want to lock the doors and turn down the lights -- our friends at PhoneScoop just got the first demo of Motion App's Classic Palm OS emulator for the Palm Pre. Palm OS apps can be installed by just dragging the .prc files over the Pre in mass storage mode, and they're run as though they were on an SD card. There's no tethered HotSync, although there's a compatibility mode of some kind and apps will be able to pull data down over the air. Check the video after the break, including a demo of ePocrates, which we know a lot of potential Pre owners are interested in.

They're back; Google has restored the tethering applications pulled from the Android Market earlier this week. What, can't you see them? That's because you live in the US. In a statement sent to affected developers, Google says:
We inadvertently unpublished your application for all mobile providers; if you like, we can restore your app so that all Android Market users outside the T-Mobile US network will have access to your application.
Thanks so much T-Mobile US, Google.

While there's been no shortage of fresh Gizmondo rumors over the past year or so, we haven't heard much of anything about former bigwig Stefan Eriksson, who's known as much for a little car crash as he is for the company he helped bring into infamy. That looks to have changed in a big way this week, however, as Herr Eriksson has now landed back in jail in Sweden, where he's facing a whole slew of new, very serious charges, including extortion, aggravated assault, grand theft, embezzlement, and a firearms violation. No word on a new trial date or anything just yet, but it looks like Eriksson won't be resting easy anytime soon, as a district judge has granted a request to keep him in jail pending an investigation.

There's certainly no shortage of means to customize your Android experience, but there's few tweaks as innovative as this new Eyes-Free shell developed by Charles Chen and T.V. Raman., which makes the handset more accessible to the blind, or anyone simply looking to make a call without having to divert their attention. As those following Android development may be aware, the underlying code for the shell has actually been available for some time, but it's only just now been made available to general G1-toting public on Android Marketplace. One of the stand-out components is the brilliantly simple dialer, which automatically brings up a 5 no matter where you touch the screen, from which you can then simply slide your finger to dial the rest of the numbers, with an audible click providing some added assurance as you move over the numbers. Things don't stop there, of course, with the shell also able to provide things like single-touch access for the current date and time, audible notifications of battery life and signal strength, and even a mini app that draws on the phone's GPS capabilities to announce your present location. Head on past the break for a quick video of dialer, and dive into the read link below for a more thorough overview.

Would-be iPhone developers struggling to make their apps do more than fart and crash take note: Apple and Stanford have partnered to offer videos and course materials from Stanford's undergraduate iPhone app development course through iTunes. The course is being taught by two Apple engineers, and it sounds like videos will go up regularly -- the first is scheduled to post on Friday. Alright, let's all practice together: "Yeah, I took a class at Stanford." Sounds good, doesn't it?

We've always had a soft spot for the OpenMoko FreeRunner open-source phone, but it looks like quirky and charming weren't enough -- the company's discontinued work on handset's planned successor and laid off 50 percent of its staff in an effort to stay afloat. CEO Sean Moss-Pulz says that work will continue on a new-non-smartphone he's calling "Plan B," with plans to work on a new phone in the future -- we're guessing Android might figure prominently into that plan, since it's already been ported to the hardware and the rumor mill was already churning. We'll see.
P.S.- Along with the Dash Express, that's now two different FIC-built Linux devices that have met an untimely demise, and not for lack of effort or enthusiasm -- the beginnings of a trend, or merely a coincidence?
Update: OpenMoko pinged us to say that the current FreeRunner will still be produced and components will still be available for devs -- but it won't be succeeded by the planned next-gen model. Check a video statement from marketing VP Steve Mosher after the break.

According to documents obtained by the New York Times, T-Mobile's set to release a home phone early next year, and a tablet PC after that, both of which are said to be powered by Android. We're a bit light on details, but we do know the phone itself has a docking station and will come with another device for synchronization. That device's supposed resemble a small, keyboard-less laptop with a 7-inch touchscreen and could check the mail and manage data for devices across the house. Here's hoping T-Mo's been taking notes watching its AT&T HomeManager / Verizon Hub predecessors.

Many gamers were underwhelmed by the replica Pip-Boy 3000 digital clock that was included in the Amazon-exclusive Fallout 3 Survival Edition. Fortunately, a clever modder by the name of Otaku Joe had the presence of mind to rip out the gadget's chronometric guts and replace them with an iPod Touch, bringing us one step closer to a fully realized wrist-mounted health tracker, inventory manager, quest chronicler and, of course, old-timey radio. You can check it out in a hilariously awkward video preview after the break.

After talks of bringing the iPhone to China via the carrier China Mobile failed Apple and China Unicom started talking. Things appeared to be going along just fine and the iPhone had even shown up for display on the China Unicom wbesite.
Maybe some love between China carriers and Apple just isn't meant to be. Once again talks of iPhone in China have come to a grinding halt as reported by Trading Markets.

Over the weekend some folks digging in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta 2 firmware build discovered some references to the possible wifi chip for the next generation iPhone due in June. The chip reference is the letter/number code BCM4329 which can be assumes to be in reference to a chip manufactured by Broadcom.
Obvious features of this new chip include 802.11n support to handle those new speedy 5 GHz wifi networks that the iPhone 3g doesn't support. While faster internet on the phone is all well and good, 9 to 5 Mac noticed some interesting details while digging into more specs about the chip.

iTunes 8.1.1 is out via software update. The major improvements include better speed and stability while browsing your library, visiting the store, and SYNCING your iPod and iPhone. Another feature that many will be interested in is the ability to rent movies in HD, a feature that was previously Apple TV only. Also those folks with 3rd gen iPod Shuffles can celebrate with iTunes support.
We have received no reports about this iTunes update causing any unusual issues for jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches -- if you have issues please tell us!

If you've been losing sleep in eager anticipation of the new Gmail for mobile, rest assured that you'll sleep soundly tonight. With support for both Android phones and iPhone / iPod Touch OS 2.2.1, the gang over at the Google mobile blog are justifiably proud of the new app. Expect nothing less than a more robust cache that utilizes Gears (for Android) and SQLite databases (for iPhones / touches) to allow you to compose messages and access recently read messages without a network connection, an improved look and feel, and the all new "floaty bar" (their name, not ours) that keeps popular menu commands from scrolling off screen, as this bad boy rolls out progressively over the course of the day. Most interestingly, using the new Gmail on your devices doesn't require any tweaks or installs -- it's utilizing HTML5 (and its offline storage APIs) already present in the browser. Google is just turning on the juice behind the scenes. And for those of you who are resistant to change, fear not -- the previous version is still available

Users are playing games on the iPhone for the same amount of time as on traditional handheld devices such as Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP.
That's according to the findings of ng:moco, the specialist iPhone publisher carving out a niche on Apple's handset, and proof for CEO Neil Young that the iPhone is a serious new-generation console.
While traditional mobile games are played for around six minutes at a time, ng:moco's own analytics show that titles such as the recently released Rolando are engaging consumers for far longer.
"You look at the other end of the spectrum with Rolando and the average play session is 22 minutes. The average player is playing the game ten times. That's a very different type of behaviour," said Young in an interview published today.
"That's the type of behaviour you'd expect to see from a DS or PSP or a traditional console gameplay experience. Why do I believe this is different? Because I believe people are playing the games differently. And that's enabled by what the device is able to do."
The iPhone is also a format that enables developers to approach game design differently, with those working with ng:moco able to assess user experience and tweak gameplay accordingly.
"We can see that people are stuck in Topple on world four, for example, and so we can change the level so players get to see world's five, six and seven," detailed Young. "We make little tweaks and tunes when we see people get stuck or a drop off in usage."
Before founding ng:moco, Young had been with Electronic Arts for 11 years, but has found that himself and other more traditional videogame makers are adapting to the iPhone format quickly.
"The biggest thing with the device is that it's got a unique set of functionalities and interface. The first place people go to is 'let's put some buttons on the screen.' We're always trying to encourage ourselves and others we work with to not think that way," said Young.
"I don't think Nintendo would go that way. They would think about making a Zelda game that entirely uses touch. We have to think the same way if we want the games to truly take advantage of the iPhone."

At this point there's little doubt that a new iPhone model (possibly two) will at least be announced in June. Now the Commercial Times have chimed in with a report saying that components from Taiwan-based suppliers have begun shipments as Apple (or its China-based assemblers, rather) readies for a "June launch" pegged by said suppliers to reach about 2-3 million units per quarter. A phone that looks to be fitted with a 3.2 megapixel still / video CMOS camera, digital compass (magnetometer), possibly 802.11n WiFi, more storage, and all the MMS, copy/paste, and push-notifications you can shake a gesticulating finger at. Assuming all the firmware sleuthing and rumors are true, of course.

"Microsoft Corp. expects several phones on the U.S. market to be powered by its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system after it launches in the fall of 2009, according to a company executive. "We will have over 10 phones available in the U.S. alone. We expect to see that grow," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division said during his keynote speech at the CTIA wireless technology showcase

We don't get iPhone game sales figures with our NPD numbers. Thankfully, we do get them with our periodic comScore App Store sales numbers!
The market research firm have released a list of the top 25-selling iPhone apps (well...the 25 most-downloaded, since free apps are included) since the handset store launched last year, and of that 25, 12 are games, including #1. Which is Tap Tap Revenge. Amazingly, comScore reckon the game has been downloaded by 32% of iPhone owners, which is one hell of an attach rate.
Other games scoring highly on the sales charts are Touch Hockey, Pac-Man, iBowl and Labyrinth, though sadly, there's no room for either of our faves, SimCity or Space Deadbeef.

Oh Apple, what are you up to? Just like we saw right around this time last year in preparation for Apple's new iPhone 3G and updated iPod touch, Apple is placing huge orders of NAND chips thereby threatening the supply in demand by other tier-one vendors. This time we've got DigiTimes confirming earlier reports that Apple is cornering the market on flash memory -- specifically, the Taiwanese rumor rag is reporting orders of "100 million 8Gb (8 gigabit, not gigabyte) NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics." That's twice the size of the order reported last year. The tiny memory chips are then recombined during manufacturing into the larger 16GB, 32GB, and so on capacities we expect to find in our handheld consumer electronics. Anyone still doubting new Apple handhelds in June?

Apple's going all out in anticipation of a landmark for the company -- the downloading of one billion apps in the App store. Not bad for nine months of work, if you think about it: over 110 million a month, in fact. About 27 million a week... well, you get the idea. Oh yeah, they're giving away a bunch of stuff too, so be sure to check that out if the mood strikes you.

Qualcomm's fledgling FLO TV service might be on to something this time. President Bill Stone's announced plans to offer mobile broadcast to phones via add-on peripherals, including an iPhone 3.0-compatible antenna /chip accessory that's currently in the works, although without an estimated release window (Business Insider suggests it'll be ready sometime next year). The company's also looking into accessorizing Windows Mobile phones, either with a plug-in or some device that connects over Wi-Fi / Bluetooth. Seeing as the latest comScore statistics say less than one percent of all phone users watch mobile broadcast TV, which at the moment has to come built-in, this could prove to be a boon for the service -- assuming Q or the carriers can do something about those excessive pricing plans or fierce competition from Sling.

A month or so ago, the Dev Team released the patch codenamed redsn0w to fully jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G with its new processor. Within a week, we saw apps like untetherizer and quickfreedom to simplify the process of utilizing the patch. The Dev Team has now released a beta version of their very own app to jailbreak the iPod, but unlike the old QuickPwn and Pwnage Tool - they have released versions for Windows and OS X at the same time, and for the first time for Linux as well!

Google yesterday doled out some major upgrades to their Mobile software suite, specifically Gmail. An entire new look greets Gmail users on their iPhone now, with some huge improvements.
Accessing email is much faster now, and the data is cached as well so if your network drops, the emails still load (assuming you've been on long enough to load a few). You can select multiple emails once, and there is a sexy little floating tool bar which scrolls with you, allowing you to do all sorts of common tasks - Mark as Read, Archive, Delete, Mark as Unread, Add Star, etc. They call it a floaty bar,...

You know what really gets on our nerves? When we're listening to Van der Graaf Generator (look it up!) on our newfangled iPod Shuffle and it pronounces the band's name wrong. Seriously, this is an important function. Without it working flawlessly, how are we going to know the names of the tracks we purchased on the iTunes store and placed on the device ourselves? Thankfully, someone at Apple has heard our prayers, and as of today the VoiceOver Kit 1.0.1 is available via Mac OS X software update (we're assuming that it'll pop up on the company's website at some point). The 17MB download corrects pronunciations for several artist names, as well as correcting a few "minor bugs." What bugs? Apple hasn't said. They also haven't said which names will now be pronounced correctly in that cold, robotic voice, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that Klaatu is among them. Remember Klaatu? They were pretty sweet.

Another freeware & classic port from AnotherGuest: Liero is a DOS based game (first released by Finnish programmer Joosa Riekkinen in 1998) between two worms armed with heavy weapons of all kinds battling in underground caves. In Liero, two worms fight each other to death for score (or frags) using a choice of five weapons from a total of 40 in a two-dimensional map. Most of the terrain, except for indestructible rocks, may be dug or destroyed by explosions. In addition to the weaponry, each player has a ninja rope which can be used to move faster through the map. This SDL port is based on Gliptics' Open Liero.

News/release from Zodttd
Things have progressed quickly for gpSPhone lately. This is due to my push to improve my emulator’s frameworks for the iPhone & iPod Touch. By focusing on one emulator I have had time to fix some major bugs along the way and even add some new features. My goal is to soon update all my emulator projects to this current framework.
So what’s new in this vastly improved version of gpSPhone? Version 5.0.0 brings extremely smooth playback along with increased performance, and pretty awesome sound too!
I spent a long time hunting down the issue I was having with multitouch slowing my emulators down much more than it should. I have now figured out why, and fixed it in v5.0.0. For those wondering what was wrong, it came down to thread priorities, the AudioToolbox run loop, and the newly used sched_yield function. Then mix in iPhone firmware 2.2 frameworks. Whew!
Here’s a nice list of new features in v5.0.0 since the v4 series:
Improved performance due to better thread scheduling.
Improved performance due to the addition of the use of the R9 register.
Very smooth playback with a refresh rate of 60 FPS.
No more slowdown from multitouch.
Added a nice cheat menu and brought back cheats. Add a “rom-name”.cht file compatible with gpSP where “rom-name” is the name of the ROM minus the extension. Place the .cht file in the same location as the ROM (/var/mobile/Media/ROMs/GBA).
Improved menu system. Along with the cheat menu is in-game saves without the need to restart the game!
New controller skin feature and new artwork by k.nitsua added. Now the last variable of the controller skin txt file controls the opacity. With 0-100, 0 being transparent, and 100 being opaque, you can now have opaque/solid landscape skins. The old landscape skin is still in place as Skin #2 with Scaling turned on.
A bunch of minor bug fixes.
KEEP IN MIND THIS: Save states from previous public releases of gpSPhone (prior to v5.0.0) are NOT compatible with this version and most likely never will be again. This is due to the addition of a new save state data element, the use of R9. Battery saves/cart saves will still work fine in v5.0.0. But old save states from pre-v5.0.0 WILL CRASH gpSPhone! Sorry, it just had to be done
THIS VERSION USES iPhone v2.2 FRAMEWORKS…So make sure you use iPhone firmware 2.2 or later!
Regardless of these two points, this release is bound to make many people very happy! Feedback is welcome as usual.

Would you look at this. Those folks at Elan Microelectronics might seem a bit slow on the lawsuit front, but they certainly look to have the tech to back up their claims of Apple multitouch patent infringement. They're showing off what they call "eFinger Transparent Touchpad" technology, running on top of Android, and it's looking pretty slick -- we could really get used to this sort of smooth interactivity in Android, lawsuit or no. Check out the video after the break.

When we're not too busy trouncing Halo 3-developer Bungie in "humpday challenges," we fancy ourselves quite the career builders. And so it was with shock that we found ourselves colliding directly with the enormously popular franchise on CareerBuilder.com, albeit under the auspices of Halo license-owner Microsoft. Apparently the company is seeking folks who not only love Halo but also love "building scalable online infrastructure and websites for large and passionate audiences."
What does that mean, exactly? The listing doesn't go into as much details as we'd like, but it does say the job will blend, "console, web, and mobile to create an immersive Halo world that follows the dedicated Halo fan wherever they go." Our thoughts first went to iPhone integration of Bungie.net and future Halo community endeavors but then we realized that Microsoft may want to keep whatever mobile application it may be creating on Windows Mobile-based phones. We're hoping for our future-phone having selves that this isn't the case.

Zodttd has today announnced on his site a new game that was shown to me earlier this week, heres his newspost:
For those keeping up with me here at ZodTTD.com, I have been fairly quiet as of late. That usually means I’m working on some new projects, and this time is no different! Today I bring you the announcement of a new AppStore title I am working on. The game is titled “Wizzley Presto and the Mysterious Time Machine”. It’s a very slick looking action platformer game with some slight RPG elements. Wizzley Presto is rather like the Dizzy series of games you’ve loved in the past.
This development team is kept small, consisting of Craig from the OpenPandora gaming handheld project who will be programming, Ruckage our awesome artist, and me (ZodTTD) to bring in some iPhone experience and get the game programmed as well.
A cool element of this project is the blog. We are doing this game in 30 days, from an idea to a finished product for AppStore. Best of all we’re showing all of what is involved along the way. Expect lots of interesting posts for all those who wonder what it’s like programming a game on the iPhone & iPod Touch!
So be sure to check out Wizzley Presto’s progress on it’s official launch page and be sure to read about the $1000 prize for the first person to beat the game: http://www.30daygame.com
Leave a comment and show your support by spreading the word of Wizzley Presto and it’s 30DayGame project on your favorite sites such as TouchArcade!
In the meantime here’s a video made in the first few days of Wizzley Presto’s progress from the 30DayGame blog:

The shady iPhone component news chatter is starting to heat up as WWDC inches closer -- today we've got China Times saying that Apple's already placed an order for four million new iPhones to be delivered by the end of Q2. That's a whisper that lines up nicely with those earlier reports suggesting Cupertino's trying to lock down 100 million 8Gb flash chips from Samsung and placing orders for other components in preparation for a June launch, but we're a little skeptical of this one, since it claims that a new EDGE model is in the works along with a 3G version and a China-only variant potentially running on TD-SCDMA. Not moves we'd ordinarily expect Apple to make, but anything's possible -- we'll be keeping our eyes peeled.

While certainly not the most expensive iPod we've ever seen, the limited edition Prince Opus iPod touch is definitely amongst the priciest. Sold only as part of an ultra rare kit that includes a luxurious book of Prince photographs from Kraken Opus, this touch (of unknown capacity) comes preloaded with 40 minutes of "exclusive" footage along with a live soundtrack from Indigo Nights. Of course, it's also doused in purple and splashed with Prince's symbol 'round back, but even with only 950 kits available, we still say the $2,100 price tag is far too lofty. Hate to break it to ya, Opus, but those hedge funds are no longer partying like it's 1999.

When iSuppli recently reported that the parts and packaging of the iPod Shuffle 3G cost only $21.77, a mere twenty-eight percent of the unit's retail price, PMP Today asked a most reasonable question: Where are the new Shuffle KIRFs? According to Business Week, Samsung is making a killing on these things, supplying not only the unit's ARM-based processor ($5.98), but the storage ($6) on at least a few of the units as well. The lithium ion battery, described by iSuppli as "the smallest we've ever seen," has an asking price of $1.20. As for things like capacitors and resistors, they're being described as "about the size of a grain of salt" and cost fractions of a penny each. Of course, none of this takes into account things like paying engineers and designers, and royalties paid to patents owned by other companies. Not that the KIRFsters of Shenzhen worry about these sorts of things. Maybe the wherewithal required to produce a phony Shuffle is (for the time being) beyond the capabilities of the pirates? Or maybe they're just having too much fun cranking out NOKLAs.

It isn't as crazy as it sounds. According to a report by the Commercial Times apple will be launching three iPhones in June. First a 2.75g (edge like the original iPhone), an updated 3g, and a Chinese targeted CDMA version. The updated 3g phone is no surprise as we have already been expecting it for months.
The CDMA version is a direction Apple will have to go eventually if they want to put the iPhone on every network worldwide. If released possibly some hacking could put that CDMA phone on carriers like Verizon (who refused the iPhone originally).
The new edge version if it really is real would most likely be very similar to the original iPhone.

We've known that Cupcake has been floating around in dev circles for months now, but it's been clear as mud how the Open Handset Alliance plans to incorporate all of the lovely features it brings into Android's trunk, how Android will be versioned going forward, and in general, how the group plans to present a unified front to developers, manufacturers, and end users. That all gets a little clearer today with the official unveiling of Android 1.5 that fully incorporates the Cupcake branch, and -- perhaps much more importantly -- a home screen framework for developing widgets and populating live folders with whatever content you can dream up. There's no word on exactly how 1.5 will come to existing Android handsets in the field, but as far as we can tell, there's nothing listed in the changelog that would prevent current hardware from taking full advantage -- and the OHA is going to be releasing a series of articles about new-to-1.5 features in the coming weeks to help devs "prepare your applications for the release of Android 1.5 on phones." Sounds encouraging, doesn't it?

As part of a promotional celebration for its one-billionth App Store download, Apple has revealed the twenty most downloaded iPhone and iPod Touch applications in both the free and paid categories.
Games represent 30 per cent of the free and 70 per cent of the paid apps listed, and the data appears to represent total install base numbers from the App Store's debut in July of last year to present.
The most downloaded paid app is Activision's Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, a racing game that was among the first applications available during the App Store's launch over nine months ago. At USD 5.99, this game - along with Sega's Super Monkey Ball - is also the most costly app on the list.
Other popular titles on the list are Pangea's Enigmo, PopCap's Bejeweled 2, Freeverse's Moto Chaser and Flick Fishing, and Electronic Arts' Tetris, among others.
The most downloaded game in the free category is Tapulous' Tap Tap Revenge which, like Crash Bandicoot, has been available since the App Store's launch. The title is the fourth most popular free app overall, behind Facebook, Google Earth and Pandora Radio.
Among the other games on the free list are Namco's Pac-Man Lite, FlipSide5's Touch Hockey: FS5, Codify AB's Labyrinth Lite Edition, and SGN's iBowl.
Apple's list differs in some ways from a similar list released by comScore last week, which claims that Tap Tap Revenge is the most popular overall app.
When contacted for comments, comScore vice president of corporate communications Jaimee Steele told GamesIndustry.biz two possible reasons for discrepancies - first that comScore looks at overall install base as opposed to download numbers, and second that comScore's data extends only through February of this year.
"We count people, not the number of applications," said Steele."[Apple] might count something twice if there's an update, for example. We might only see that once."

Sony and Nintendo are "freaking out" over the success of the iPhone as a gaming platform, according to Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts.
Speaking to VentureBeat about the success his current company, Digital Chocolate, has had with iPhone games, Hawkins explained how the popularity of the platform took the industry by surprise.
"The iPhone for us was a spectacularly pleasant surprise," he explained. "We had no idea it was going to be as good for us as it turned out to be...
"It's by far our most effective platform. We make as much money with these games on one device as we do putting a game on 100 different cell phone platforms."
He added: "Between the iPod Touch and the iPhone, I think the platform is freaking out Sony and Nintendo. Apple has sold 30 million units so far and it has created tremendous awareness. It has taken ground all over the world. But it has only penetrated one half of one percent of its total market."
Hawkins recognised that other mobile phone manufacturers hoped to build on iPhone's success with similar designs but insisted that Digital Chocolate's focus remained on Apple's device.
"The clones are coming," he said. "Device makers, chip companies, software companies and others are getting into the act. We may experiment with putting games on those new app stores, but the urgency now is to put games on the iPhone."
Digital Chocolate has produced four titles for the iPhone that were best sellers, with 10 million downloads in less than 100 days.

Skype has updated to version 1.0.2 on the App Store (iTunes link). The update mostly includes basic bug fixes but also includes a very interesting warning. iClarified reader (and jailbreaker) Francois noticed this new little warning when he launched his updated copy of Skype.
"This version of Skype is only supported on unmodified iPhone OS 2.2"
While the warning appears to be threatening he was able to continue to use the app normally. The warning is most likely intended to notice jailbreakers that Skype may have incompatibilities with jailbroken apps that do not use MobileSubstrate (you can read all about it in Cydia) and that Skype does not support issues that may arise because of that.

It's a little silly just how hush-hush this whole iPhone-AT&T exclusivity agreement has been, but now it sounds like it just might be next century before any of you CDMA loyalists are able to indulge in the App Store. According to a fresh report in The Wall Street Journal, people "familiar with the matter" have suggested that AT&T is feverishly working to extend its exclusive agreement to carry the iPhone in America until 2011. Last we heard, the deal was stretched out through 2010, and considering just how many new subscribers are flocking over solely for this phone, can you really blame the guy for wanting another dozen months of bliss? Not surprisingly, an Apple spokeswoman had more to say about her personal life than on these rumors, but if you were really banking on snapping up a Verizon-branded iPhone at the end of next year, you should probably ask someone to blast you with a giant fire hose of reality.

No details on what's new just yet, but iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 has just hit Apple's servers for registered, card-carrying members of the Dev Center -- a nice release cadence since the new platform was first announced. More as we flesh it out!
Update: Alright, well, we've played with it -- as many of you have -- and the update seems cosmetically identical to beta 2. We'd argue that things generally feel smoother and snappier, but the difference is almost imperceptible; go ahead and upgrade if you're chilling on beta 2, but don't expect sunshine and moonbeams with this release.

Users love the abundance of low-cost content on the App Store; many publishers would argue that prices are generally too low on the service – EA clearly doesn’t agree, however, having just released an established casual favourite for free for the iPhone.
Lemonade Tycoon arrived on the App Store this afternoon having already enjoyed success on PC and mobile.
However, whilst some portals are still charging as much as $14.99 for the game, EA’s iPhone version is free to download. Instead, the title includes “tastefully integrated sponsor messages”.
TouchArcade reports that the game offers the same popular gameplay seen in previous incarnations, requiring players to manage their own business, including inventory, supplies, marketing and advertising.

Companies and enterprising individuals have been dabbling with the tantalizing concept of slapping Android on a cheap netbook for months now, and seeing how Android and Symbian could end up locked in a heated battle for the hearts and minds of the open-source mobile platform world, it stands to reason that the boys and girls at the Foundation would want to counter the OHA's every move. Some good people in the S60 On Symbian Customer Operations group (try fitting that on a business card) have managed to compile and run an S60-skinned Symbian build on one of Intel's Atom reference boards, showing a stock S60 screen and an OpenGL demo -- which, as you might imagine, runs circles around the performance of a garden-variety S60 handset. To quote the Foundation's boss, "I was most impressed with the responsiveness of the UI and upper application layers" -- the only question left to be answered is whether there's a place in the world for a Symbian-powered netbook.

Well hey -- it looks like Windows Mobile 6.5 will arrive a little earlier than expected. A post on the WinMo team blog says that the update to Redmond's smartphone platform will officially launch on May 11, the first day of the Tech Ed conference. We're figuring that could mean we'll see the gold build demoed for the very first time, seeing how the version showed off at the glamorous MWC launch was described as an "alpha" cut. Of course, after that it's all up to the carriers and handset manufacturers as to when we'll actually see the OS loaded onto devices, but we're sure the hacking community will find a way to satiate the impatient until then -- or until Windows Mobile 7 comes out.

There's a mild chance that Sony Ericsson CEO Hideki Komiyama has been hitting the sauce just a wee bit too hard of late, but we're guessing it's mostly just an inability to comprehend his own company's situation. As SE pushes out awful report after awful report, the company's head honcho has just revealed that it'll be some time yet before it hops on the Android bandwagon -- as if it really has time on its side. In an interview with Reuters, he stated: "[Going Android] does require a lot of evaluation, as well as a lot of testing, a lot of acceptance from a consumer viewpoint, and there is still some time to go." He did confess that "looking ahead," he viewed it as an "important operating system," but he definitely gave no indication that we'd see an Android-based SE handset in the near future. Which is strange, really, considering that we'd already heard it would produce one during this calender year...

New documents suggest motion tech could be at the heart of the upcoming new model.
Mac Rumours reports on two Apple patent applications that indicate the tech giant has been wrestling with the problem of gesture control in a portable device, and specifically, the issues involved in gesturing to a handheld when the user itself is moving.
One patent outlines an idea where the iPhone can detect when a user is moving and automatically enlarge the UI accordingly, reducing the scope for error.
More interestingly, however, the patent diagrams seem to show a front camera on the iPhone/iPod Touch – something that isn’t present on either of the existing models.
Such a development would, in telephony terms, pave the way for video calling. But from a games perspective it could add a whole new dynamic to the current touch screen and accelerometer functions.

Very similar to the previous jailbreak for the 3.0 beta firmware this Jailbreak fresh out from Russia allows you to install Icy on your iPhone, iPhone 3g, or iPod Touch 1st gen running 3.0 Beta 3 firmware that was released the other day. As with the previous beta 3.0 jailbreak Cydia has not yet been prepared for iPhone 3.0 leaving the option of Icy which isn't nearly as awesome but it is something. Once again this is not a dev team release -- it is independently compiled files packaged inside of the dev teams QuickPwn software.

It seems like forever since SlingBox announced that they had submitted their SlingPlayer application (which we checked out at MacWorld) to the App Store. Weeks later we are left here wondering where is SlingPlayer at?
If Fudzilla's sources are to be believed we may not get the pleasure of streaming our home TV connection to the iPhone. The sources say that the reason it has been rejected is because AT&T has requested that it not be allowed into the App Store. Why? Because AT&T is afraid of how much bandwidth the app will take up.

There are some nice options iPhone owners to track their phones via GPS. AT&T has decided the join in on the game of phone tracking and has launched their FamilyMap service. The service basically allows the tracking of any number on your plan. This tracking isn't done by just cell tower triangulation, the plan actually accesses the phone's internal GPS to provide pin-point accuracy.
There is no visual notice on the phone besides the initial text message that the service is active so if you want to spy on your family just make sure to have the phone in hand to delete the txt really quick when you activate the service Every day personal privacy becomes harder to hold on to here in the US and AT&T has put another tool in the hands of the public to make privacy violation nice and easy.

rubens' New Employers Made This Game With The PSP's "Rubbish" SDK.
Just to clarify before you read the rest of this article: SDK means Software Development Kit. It’s ok if you didn’t know, we Googled it too!
Moving on, Sebastien Rubens, a former SCEE employee, has spoken out about the PSP’s SDK. Speaking with Edge-Online, he asked Sony to give more support to developers. He claimed that Apple’s own iPhone SDK is flat-out “better” and that SCEE is “slow to move” during the submission process.
Rubens currently works for Anozor, who made the marginally ok No Gravity: Plague Of The Mind.

While the British military has had a love-hate relationship with Apple's darling, the US armed forces are reportedly warming up quite well to the iPod touch. A fresh Newsweek report asserts that the touch is increasingly replacing far more expensive dedicated devices in the field, noting that it is being used to spearhead the future of "networked warfare." Equipped with a rugged shell and software developed by language translation firms (among others), the device is being used to aid communications and acquire information from databases. In fact, the US Department of Defense is "developing military software for iPods that enables soldiers to display aerial video from drones and have teleconferences with intelligence agents halfway across the globe," and snipers are already utilizing a ballistics calculator to add precision to shots. And hey, it's not like easy access to Tap Tap Revenge is really bad for morale, either.

The man behind the hugely popular Rolando game on the iPhone platform, Simon Oliver, believes that one of the reasons for the Apple product's success is the "phenomenally good" distribution system - the App Store.
Talking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, the indie developer revealed that he'd thought about working on other platforms previously - including XBLA, but that the iPhone made life that much easier.
"Well, XNA was good, and this was before the whole community games thing," he said. "At the time, you could develop games, but there was no way of getting them out there. That was probably the primary reason at the time that I discounted it as a platform to work on.
"The thing about the iPhone is that the distribution is phenomenally good as well - the cut that Apple takes is great, and is so streamlined. You compare it to WiiWare, or even XBLA, it's such a streamlined process. You can do it via computer, via your phone, it's very easy and the automatic updating system is just fantastic."
Oliver continued that he felt that Apple had taken a significant market lead as a result, and that while more traditional gaming companies like Sony and Nintendo were working on or evolving digital distribution systems, they were some distance behind.
"Nowadays, I think there's a certain amount of response from guys like Sony and Nintendo to this, and there are rumours of what's going to be on PSP 2 in terms of digital downloads, plus there's the DSi and DSWare, WiiWare, etc," he said.
"But I think Apple's placed so far ahead, there's going to have to be a rapid reaction from the others - just in terms of the sheer amount of the content that's produced. Obviously there's not the same level of quality control that you get on XBLA or WiiWare, but I think you'll get so many more interesting games on the iPhone because the barrier to entry is so unbelievably low.
"All these people with ideas, people that have been wanting to make games for years - like me - they can finally realise that idea and get it out there."
The full interview with Simon Oliver, in which explains the background to the development of Rolando, as well as his thoughts on the sheer number of applications deluging the App Store, is available now.
Oliver will also be a panellist at the forthcoming BAFTA Presents: Digital Distribution event, in association with the GamesIndustry.biz Network, taking place in London next week. Tickets are available for the event from the BAFTA website.

Remember the $49 Apple Composite AV Cable and the $49 Apple Component AV Cable? That let you currently output 480i and 480p video to your TV from your iPhone and iPod Touch (respectively)? Well Apple is telling all Apple Authorized Retailers to clear those out of inventory.
Why?
The guys at PhoneNews have "confirmed" (rumor alert) Apple will be releasing a new cable - the Apple AV Cable. The cable will support both component and composite output, so folks can easily plug in to their HD and SD TV's without having to buy separate cables.
But that's not the best part - supposedly, the reason behind this is the new iPhone and iPod Touch models

Orange has been named the number one mobile gaming operator in 2008, with a market share of 23 per cent for downloads and 25 per cent for revenues, according to figures released by ELSPA and Chart-Track.
Sonic the Hedgehog and Monopoly were the most popular titles, while over 30 per cent of Orange's gaming revenues came from consumer purchases of pre-installed demos on its phones.
"We're delighted with taking the top spot for mobile gaming in 2008 and are already making great strides to make sure we stay there in 2009," commented Neil Holroyd, head of games and gambling at Orange UK.
"We're making more enhancements to our embedded games, and giving our Orange World gaming channel a new look and feel - customers can look forward to a slicker experience and improved graphics."

According to sources that contacted Ars iPhone firmware 3.0 will have voice control and feedback in addition to the tons of other new features previously reported. Codenamed "Jibbler" the iPhone voice system will include both voice recognition to allow you to control the iPhone by speaking and voice synthesis similar to the latest iPod Shuffle which can "read" track titles etc to you.
"Jibbler" will probably be an enhancement to the iPhone's spingboard somehow -- the details aren't clear. It also reportedly supports spotlight. Support for the Jibbler report are references to classes in the iPhone firmware including VSSpeechSynthesizer, VSRecognitionSession, SBVoiceControlDisableHandlerActions, SBSensitiveJibblerEnabled

Completely useless but funny as hell :-) Trick all your friends with this amazing "fake" mobile shaver. Turn Nshaver from Jackson Productions on and your phone will start to vibrate and produce a shaving sound. With the Camera On/Off modus selected, simply move the phone over your hair and Nshaver will automatically start and stop. Have you ever wanted to shave off your friends hair? Want to know someones reaction, when he thinks his hair is shaved off? This is your chance :-)

The economy might be in a dumpster, but Apple keeps selling iPods, iPhones and Macs -- the company just reported a $1.21b profit on revenues of $8.16b, which is yet another record quarter. In fact, if you do away with that pesky subscription accounting that the company uses for the iPhone and Apple TV, the numbers are even higher: $1.66b profit on $9.06b of revenue. Mac sales did fall three percent compared to a year ago, but that was offset by a three-percent increase in iPod sales (particularly of the iPod touch) and a 123-percent jump in iPhone sales. So, now that the numbers are out of the way, let's let Tim Cook take some shots at netbooks, shall we?
When I'm looking at what's sold in the Netbook market, I see cramped keyboards, junky hardware, very small screens, bad software. Not a consumer experience that we would put the Mac brand on. As it exists today, we're not interested in it nor would it be something customers would be interested in the long term. We are looking at the space. For those who want a small computer that does browsing/email, they might want an iPhone or iPod Touch. If we find a way to deliver an innovative product that really makes a contribution, we'll do that.
Slamming the door while simultaneously leaving it open -- how very Jobs-like. Speaking of which, Cook wouldn't say anything beyond the usual "We look forward to Steve's return in June" line, so no updates there -- but were you really expecting any? We're still listening to the call, we'll update if we hear anything good.

The biggest threat to gaming on the iPhone is a lazy publishing attitude that could see company's throw franchises on the platform without any thought for the unique possibilities of the device
That's according to Neil Young, founder of Dr Awesome, Rolando and WordFu publisher ngmoco, who said that he doesn't want to see a repeat of a practice that harmed Sony's PlayStation Portable as soon as it launched on the market.
Young believes that the current freedom for publishers to charge low prices for games is right for the iPhone, and acts as a deterrent to those looking to make a quick profit.
"What I don't want to see happen is a 'Premium App Store'. What that would do would encourage publishers to be lazy which is the biggest risk that the device faces," he said in an exclusive interview published today.
"When the PSP came out, and one of the reason I actually think the PSP didn't succeed in the same way the DS did, is because publishers just ported their original PlayStation games. So the PSP had more software at launch that any other gaming system had in history, but it got off to a really slow start because it didn't offer gamers anything different.
"I don't want to see that happen here. I don't want to see a premium space where a successful franchise is just inserted onto the device."
Nintendo's attitude to product, where it creates games specifically tailored to a device such as the DS or Wii, is the right attitude to adopt when looking at iPhone titles, said Young.
"I'd like to see it more like Nintendo's world where there's a reason Nintendo dominates the top 20 on the DS. Because they're the people that make the best games for it and they've been really thoughtful about it. I tend to want to encourage things that to keep the level of innovation there."
Young believes that in-application commerce will flip the pricing structure of iPhone games when the feature is introduced in the iPhone OS 3.0, due later this year.
But, he warned, developers and publishers should be careful about how they implement micro-transactions, and be careful not to prioritise "greed over gameplay".
"I think a big, big change is going to be in-app commerce. What's going to happen initially with in-app commerce is everything will trend towards 99 cents as the entry price for a game and gamers are going to start getting really wary about that they are and aren't buying. Because they're going to feel like they've stepping into a money trap."
"It's going to be difficult. We have to be really careful not to prioritise greed over gameplay. There's going to be a bit of a rough period as that works through the system. We're not going to charge 99 cents for a rocket launcher. That would be a really bad idea from a gameplay point and it would be the fastest way to piss off your consumer."

It seems that AT&T is now successful to secure the iPhone exclusivity deal for a longer period. AT&T’s service has always been an issue with most of the iPhone users but Apple seems to be quite content with the service. That’s why, when Tim Cook (and Peter Oppenheimer) were asked that whether Apple will continue with AT&T or not, he seemed quite positive about the deal with AT&T.

The long awaited Quickoffice has finally hit the App Store (itunes link $19.99). The iPhone has been lacking a solid package of applications to easily view and edit Office documents and Quickoffice fills that spot nicely except for a few major flaws.
The Good
Quickword is nice and full-featured allowing you to create and edit word documents with the features you'd expect like copy/paste (even between documents) along with formatting options (font sizes, styles, etc.).
Quicksheet while a little laggy renders Excel worksheets well and includes a whopping 125 functions and formulas to handle most of your spreadsheeting needs.
Quickoffice File is just excellent when integrated with MobileMe. Simply drag files to your iDisk and bam they are editable on the iPhone.
The Bad
Where did predictive txt go? The iPhone keyboard can be difficult to type on and the built-in predictive text feature really should be working in Quickoffice.
Copy/Paste is missing from Quicksheet.

AT&T is firing up to point out all the ways the iPhone wins against the Pre if this leaked internal document is any indication. Good old competition. While there are many things on the list above that can be disputed some of them seem to be fact. The pre won't work in the rest of the world as it is being released on Sprint (sad), the screen is smaller, 3d graphics limitations, and other various things.
Surprisingly the document actually lists some (well only one) of the Pre's advantages: a full QWERTY keyboard. What? Did you think AT&T was going to publish reasons the Pre might be better than the iPhone?
edit: ppl have asked "why the bogus comparison"
a) This is an internal AT&T document. AT&T is not going to publish a document saying that the Palm Pre on Sprint is better than the iPhone on AT&T. Duh.
b) Why don't you educate everyone else

Konami and Kojima Productions have released the "complete version" of Metal Gear Solid Touch for iPhone / iPod Touch. The game originally launched ahead of schedule on March 18 but was basically unfinished. It only covered the events of Metal Gear Solid 4 up to a certain point (we won't spoil it) before abruptly ending, leaving some to question their $7.99 investment. Today's update, which is free for anyone who already owns the game, fills out the rest of the story in addition to bringing more unlockable iPhone wallpapers and numerous bug fixes.
MGS Touch is a fine shooting gallery with plenty of polish; we just hope iPhone will, at some point, get a proper -- much more interactive -- MGS title like other phones have.

When the MSAFluids Remote multitouch App was rejected, a developer found a way to get virtually the same effect using a safari App. They’re using the TUIO protocol to get the desired remote control. This opens up the door to extending Applications through the browser as well. While this probably wouldn’t allow you to utilize the other sensor inputs from your device, like accelerometer data, it will allow for fast prototyping of applications that don’t need that.

Apple has announced the financial results for its second quarter, ended March 28, with iPod and iPhone sales offsetting a three per cent decline in Mac sales.
The company saw revenue hit USD 8.16 billion, compared to USD 7.51 billion year-on-year, with a profit of USD 1.21 billion, compared to USD 1.05 billion. This translates to USD 1.33 per diluted share, compared to USD 1.16 for the same period the previous year.
Apple sold 2.22 million Mac computers during the quarter, down three per cent, at the same time more than 11 million iPods were sold, representing a growth of three per cent. Meanwhile, the iPhone sold 3.79 million units, a 123 per cent unit growth year-on-year.
"We are extremely pleased to report the best non-holiday quarter revenue and earnings in our history," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Apple's financial condition remains very robust, with almost USD 29 billion in cash and marketable securities on our balance sheet.
"Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter of 2009, we expect revenue in the range of about USD 7.7 billion to USD 7.9 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about USD 0.95 to USD 1.00."
Apple's stock is currently trading for USD 121.51, a drop in 0.21 per cent from the previous closing price.

We don't know why T-Mobile isn't trumpeting this, but Deutsche Telekom's Q1 results are out, and the multinational carrier says that over one million G1s have been sold in the US, making up a majority of the 1.5 million 3G devices currently active on T-Mo's network. That's quite an accomplishment in just six months, considering the Android handset launched without nationwide 3G coverage -- it's better now, but we're talking just 21 cities back in October.
Of course, a million's just a drop in the bucked compared to the number of Blackberrys, iPhones, and Windows Mobile devices out there, but we've got enough of a soft spot for Android to overlook it -- now let's get some more devices out the door and really boost that marketshare number, shall we?

Apple has apologised for a "deeply offensive" iPhone application called Baby Shaker, which made a game of quieting crying babies by shaking them.
It removed the $0.99 (Ł0.59) game from its iTunes Store on Wednesday, two days after it went on sale.
It sparked outrage from children's groups and brain injury foundations.
The aim of the game was to quieten babies by shaking the iPhone until a pair of thick red Xs appeared over each eye of a baby drawn in black and white.
"This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store," Apple said in a statement.
"We sincerely apologise for this mistake and thank our customers for bringing this to our attention."
But an Apple spokeswoman would not comment on why the program - developed by a company called Sikalosoft - was approved for sale in the first place, nor how many people had downloaded it.
The iTunes description included the line: "See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down!"
It also included a disclaimer: "Never shake a baby."
Officials from Sikalosoft were not available for comment.
US-based organisations which seek to prevent brain injuries from Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) - including the National Centre on Shaken Baby Syndrome and the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation - condemned Apple for approving the game's sale.
Jetta Bernier, executive director of Massachusetts Citizens for Children, said: "I am disheartened that with this new application Apple is encouraging frustrated adults to shake infants, not only to end their crying, but to end their lives.
"There are many effective infant soothing strategies that adults can use to calm their fussy, crying babies. Shaking is not one of them," the Daily Telegraph reported her as saying.
The outrage over Baby Shaker came as Apple celebrated the one billionth download from its App Store, which launched nine months ago.
"The speed with which the App Store has ramped up is impressive and has really set the bar high for everyone else," analyst Van Baker of Gartner told the BBC.
"Everyone from Nokia to Palm and from RIM (BlackBerry) to Google with Android are trying to follow suit. The question remains as to how good a job they will do."
There are more than 35,000 applications in the store. Some are free and the most expensive are $9.99 (Ł6.82).
Apple has highlighted the most popular applications.
At time of writing a game called Catcha Mouse is top of the free download category with more than one million downloads. In the paid section, the top spot is taken by a game called StickWars.
Apple is rewarding the downloader of the one billionth app with a prize that will total over $13,000. The gift will include a 17" MacBook Pro, iPod Touch, a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate and an Apple Time Capsule.

In the spirit of its titular character, Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles has sneaked onto the App Store and ... well, it hasn't stabbed anyone, but we're sure the (approximately) seven-hour adventure has cut a few purse strings with its $9.99 price tag.
It's at the upper end of the price range for iPhone games, and since we haven't laid our mitts on it, we can't give you any guidance as to whether or not it's worth it. If you give it a whirl, let us know what you think in the comments below.

We dig Android set rumors, even more so when they're mumbling about Samsung's first foray into the land of the Android OS. We'd initially heard Samsung's S8000 Cubic might well be the first Android set launched, but the::unwired's reporting that the Samsung I7500 will be the one to watch. While still all rumor and speculation, the I7500 has a mind numbing pile of features, all of which would guarantee us picking this up no matter what OS it's sporting. Starting with quad-band EDGE, dual-band HSDPA, 8GB of internal storage, a 3.2-inch capacitive OLED display (can we get a wahoo?) 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, and even GPS. The I7500 is scheduled rumored to be exclusive on O2 as early as June this year for €300. That, mes amis, is some seriously tasty rumor magic, here's hoping it pans out.

Guangzhou Skytone Transmission Technologies Company, which we will absolutely never call by its full name again, has just dropped a juicy nugget about its forthcoming netbook. If you'll recall, we recently caught wind of the ARM-based, Android-powered rig (the Alpha 680), which is expected to be a stripped down portable useful for web surfing and light duty Office use. Nixon Wu, Skytone's co-founder, recently confessed that it's aiming to sell the machine for around $250, and if all goes well, it should have prototypes ready by June and final products ready for consumption a month or two after that. Call us crazy (or just greedy, really), but we were totally hoping for this to ring up at $199 or less.

We've been down this path countless times, but rumors are once again heating up that Apple and Verizon are actively discussing the possibility of creating an iPhone to work on Big Red's airwaves, according to USA Today's infamous "people familiar with the situation." The juicy gossip claims that discussions kicked off a few months ago when Steve was still running the day-to-day show out in Cupertino, but that the conversation has continued in his absence -- and they'd like to get a product on the shelves next year, likely much to AT&T's chagrin. The article claims that this would be a CDMA product, but given that Verizon boss Ivan Seidenberg himself ruled out a CDMA iPhone and opened the door for an LTE one, we're inclined to believe that the carrier would like to see this product help inaugurate the first slivers of its commercial 4G network in 2010. Since AT&T (along with the rest of the world) is moving toward LTE, an LTE-powered iPhone is a forgone conclusion -- it's really just a question of when Apple will make it happen and whether Verizon will be able to seal the deal.

While mere mortals will most likely have to wait until May to get at Cupcake (probably even stooping so low as to refer to it as Android 1.5, those commoners), the proud, good-looking possessors of Android Dev Phones can get at the update right this instant from HTC's website.
Naturally, we'd assume somebody's going to figure out how to get these images onto rooted G1s before long, but we wouldn't want to over estimate the intelligence or temerity of the proletariat.

It's crazy, we know. Just hours after hearing shockingly believable whispers that Apple's white-hot iPhone 3G could be sashaying over to Verizon Wireless, in flies a Wall Street Journal report asserting that the suits in Redmond are (also?) in talks with America's largest carrier. 'Course, we've heard rumors that Microsoft was banging out a smartphone behind closed doors for centuries now, but much to our chagrin, there's no mention of "Zune" in "Project Pink." Instead, we're told that said handset in a touchscreen-based multimedia phone that will aim to extend the Windows Mobile OS while "adding new software capabilities." Not surprisingly, we're told that Windows Marketplace would be front and center on the phone, and potentially most interesting is this tidbit: "a third-party is expected to make the device." Hey HTC -- seen any strange calls originating from the 425?

You might think that everything that could possibly be said or done with USB missile launchers had already been said and done, but you'd be wrong -- dead wrong. The next (final?) frontier for these staples of modern cube warfare has arrived in the form of an iPhone app, iLauncher, that'll allow you to control your PC-connected arsenal from afar over WiFi. It's the coolest use of a phone as a deadly weapon since James Bond ghost rode a Bimmer in Tomorrow Never Dies using some crazy one-off Ericsson, but air / ground supremacy doesn't come cheap: expect to spend $2.99 to nab this off the App Store.

Back in November we reported about Apple shutting down discussion on how to reverse engineer iTunes to make syncing of iPhones and iPods work with applications other than iTunes along with unsupported operating systems like Linux. Back then we thought the whole thing was a bit ridiculous. IF you want to sync on Linux or without iTunes you should be able to right?
At the time Apple claimed that the discussions were in violation of the DMCA Act because this reverse engineering could possibly lead to copyright violations.
Some months later the folks behind the site that Apple insisted discussions be removed from, Bluwiki.com, have filed a lawsuit against Apple in order to establish their right to restore the previously removed discussions. They claim that reverse-engineering to create a new product is perfectly acceptable under the DMCA Act and that the discussions were only about reverse engineering iTunes in order to use Apple devices with other software and iTunes on linux which in no way violate any of the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions or Apple's

New market research data from analyst Flurry claims that Apple’s iPhone accounted for 56 per cent of mobile app usage in April; add to that the 28 per cent share won by the iPod Touch and that gives Apple an 84 per cent slice of the market.
Venturebeat reports that Google Android, in contrast, secured 16 per cent of the market. However, this is hugely up on the seven per cent it claimed in March, and is all the more impressive when it is considered that right now there is only one Android phone on the market – the T-Mobile G1.
Flurry adds that 53 per cent of iPhone owners will use their apps on a wi-fi network, with 37 per cent doing so on a private connection and 16 per cent on a public connection. App usage using mobile network connections account for 35 per cent of total use.
Typically, users are likely to keep on accessing apps for around three months, with peak usage occurring between the sixth and eighth week.

Playora brings Spot the Difference to iPhone
Apr 28th 2009 at 17:30 by Ben Parfitt

The ‘Spot the Difference’ genre has hit the iPhone as of today following the release of Dreams by Matt Spall’s newly formed mobile games publisher Playora.
The game has already gained a strong following on DifferenceGames.com where it has been either played online or downloaded a total of 12m times.
The visually striking game is played much like the traditional activity book-style spot the difference games – two variants of the same picture are shown, and using the iPhone’s zooming and panning controls, users must pick the inconsistencies.
The game selects six differences from a possible pool of 15 on each play, adding a little longevity to the title.
“Dreams is a stunningly beautiful game and we’re really pleased to be able to extend the property outside of its online and download origins on DifferenceGames.com,” Playora GM Matt Spall stated.
Dreams is Playora’s second iPhone release, following in the footsteps of Balloon Headed Boy earlier this month.

A video posted over at Pocketgamer seems to show off a very early build of Worms for the iPhone. The video is pretty brief, though it still manages to impress us through some slick visuals and competent controls. Whether or not this is real, know that we want it to be real.
We've put in word to both Team17 and EA's mobile division (which was rumored to have acquired the license). EA got back to us to say that the company "does not comment on rumor and speculation." While we wait on Team17, you can head past the break and watch poor Harlequin catch a rocket to the face.

The ScummVM Team have released a new version of scummvm, heres the details:
It was not that long since our previous release, and now here is a new bugfix release hot off the press!
The list of fixed bugs is quite long, and you could read all of it in the release notes, but here is a summary for those of you who are too lazy to follow the links and eager to play the games better.
SAGA: Inherit the Earth is completable again; AGOS, Groovie, Sword2: fixed many sound-related issues; Parallaction: fixed a bug in one of the puzzles; squashed a number of bugs in the GUI. Also iPhone, Symbian, WinCE ports are much improved and NDS and PS2 ports are back again since 0.11.0.
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.

Motorola needed to release an Android set about six months ago, but we know these things take time -- and if it's any consolation, it sounds like the first fruits of the labor could be pretty awesome. Boy Genius Report now claims that the rumored landscape QWERTY slider Calgary will be the first Android-powered Moto device to go commercial, though it's not clear when (or where) it'll hit shelves; given the device's seemingly unusual appearance and the possibility (foolish hope?) that they'll be infusing some customizations into the UI, they might just have an angle to attack offerings from HTC and others. That's not all for the Android department, though -- it looks like there might also be a portrait QWERTY slider in the works for the third quarter codenamed "Ironman," pictured, which will pack 3G, WiFi, and some sort of high-res camera. In other words, a solidly high-end device. Bring it on, guys.
Moving on, it seems the lovely full touchscreen Flash has been canned, along with the Krave's successor, the Inferno -- possibly further confirmation that Moto's throwing virtually all its weight into the Android camp at this point. Finally, rumor has it that a device codenamed "Rolex" is in the labs -- and as you might've guessed, it uses the Aura's astonishingly awesome ultra-high-res circular display. Odds are this is another luxury phone given its aspirational name and the screen being used, but a poor guy can dream.

Okay, now we get it -- the flood of Android phones we were expecting at MWC and CTIA this year are actually arriving a month or two late. Nice. Anywho, with Samsung just recently dishing out official dirt on its Google-fied I7500 and HTC pushing out its Magic overseas, Acer is making darn sure it's not left out as the bandwagon cruises by. During the firm's Q1 investor's conference today, Gianfranco Lanci (President and CEO) noted that "the entire industry is looking at Android," and that his company "is testing Android on a lot of different solutions." Specifically, he stated that it was "working on an Android solution for the smartphone, but it's too early to say if [Acer] is going to [put the OS] on a netbook in the near future." 'Course, he could be spitting out positive vibes to just make sure we don't forget about 'em, but here's hoping Mr. Lanci takes him own quotes seriously. We'll be watching -- like Rockwell, minus the catchy chorus.

The latest Grand Theft Auto clone to hit the iPhone, TAG Games’ Car Jack Streets, may have proved popular with the critics but sadly it seems that the game has also been a hit with pirates too.
Developer TAG Games said on its Twitter feed: “SHOCKING! Looks like sales of Car Jack Streets are less than a THIRD of total users. That is a massive proportion of piracy.”
The extent of piracy on iPhone is currently unclear, despite a couple of high-profile incidents involving a handful of titles.
However, the homebrew scene is certainly rife on iPhone, with all manner of online communities forming in the name of making the most of their ‘jailbroken’ handsets.

The answer? Free iPhone apps are accessed an average of 19.9 times over their lifecycle before being discarded by users, according to stats from Greystripe's mobile ad network, with an average engagement of 9.6 minutes per session.
The stats are based on data gleaned from the 600 free iPhone apps and games in its ad network.
Overall, the US accounts for 74.8 per cent of Greystripe's iPhone ad traffic, followed by the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico and Germany.
Michael Chang, CEO at Greystripe, said: "The biggest question about iPhone applications for brands and publishers centers around market size, revenue and usage. We are right in the middle of all three questions and we believe our Insights Report brings more light to this booming business."

Although we've been sworn to secrecy about its finer points (shhh, PopCap nailed it), Joystiq can excitedly confirm that Peggle for iPhone / iPod Touch will be released onto the App Store on Tuesday, May 12. PopCap is still considering an appropriate price, but we can assume Peggle is not going to be tossed in the 99-cent free-for-all pile and will probably fit into a more "premium" price range between $5-6. Though, if any game's worth the ceiling price of $10, Peggle is (just, you know, don't actually price it that high, PopCap, cool?).
Rest assured, the "delay" -- heightened by our agonizing jonesing for a Peggle fix ever since the App Store launched -- has been used to design a quality experience. This is no half-baked port. Peggle has long been likened to "crack," but let's be more accurate: It's one of those highly-addictive pharmaceutical concoctions, created by professionals in tidy laboratories and tailored through extensive QA trials. Can you tell? We're hooked.

When Mass Effect 2 was announced, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello said it would going multi-platform. Some took that to mean that it might eventually appear on the PlayStation 3, but it looks like another system has beaten it to the punch -- the iPhone.
A recent survey has revealed an iPhone app titled Mass Effect: Jacob's Story. Billed as a prologue to the upcoming Mass Effect 2, the story will star the "biotic-powered super-soldier" Jacob Taylor, who "stumbles across a plot to terrorize civilization's greatest beacon of hope."
Instead of an RPG, it looks like Jacob's Story will be a shooter. The graphics will utilize a top-down perspective, and will sport a "stylized, cartoonish look."

With the economy in the tank (still) and the heat on, cost and profit margins are more important than ever to companies hoping to stave off the inevitable, apocalyptic doom of recession. Well, iSuppli's released an estimated report of how much its costing Palm to cobble together the Pre -- about $138, as it turns out.
iSuppli has positively identified just two of the Pre's suppliers thus far -- that Texas Instruments OMAP chip, which runs Palm $11, and Qualcomm's wireless chip -- but they've formed a general picture of what's under the hood for the estimate. That price is about 46 percent of the $300 iSuppli suggests Palm will be charging Sprint for the Pre (a number that's completely unconfirmed at this point).
To put it in perspective, the BlackBerry Storm costs about $203 to make and was sold for $199 initially, the G1 clocked in at $144, while the iPhone 3G costs Apple an estimated $174.33. Of course, we have no way of assessing the accuracy of the estimate yet, but if it's in the neighborhood of correct, Palm's profit margin should be pretty healthy.

iPhone app developers are being invited to join social games firm SGN’s in-app advertising network.
Those who sign up to SGN’s network will see their games promoted across the company’s own catalogue of iPhone games.
The firm promises to add incentives for downloading advertised games by also offering in-game rewards to users.
While there is no initial fee for joining, SGN will take a cut of download revenues for promoted games.
SGN claims that its own portfolio of titles – including Agency Wars and Mafia: Respect & Retaliation – have been downloaded over 12 million times, offering a platform for heightened exposure against the swamp of games released on the iPhone.
“With the anticipated launch of the iPhone OS 3.0 and one billion applications downloaded to date, the rush of new applications will be tremendous and it will get harder and harder to stand out of the crowd,” said SGN CEO Shervin Pishevar.
Punch Entertainment and Smallmedium are the first developers to sign up for the network, with Pishevar stating the two groups will now be able to reach a broader audience and will get a boost in downloads by joining our cross-promotional network.
"We have seen the benefits of this approach through the trials we have undertaken with our current games and through the gaming hub on Facebook,” Pishevar added.

Publisher EA has outlined its online vision for the third iteration of The Sims ahead of its global release on PC, Mac, iPhone and iPod Touch on June 2nd.
Right from the off users are going to be able to download a second town for use in the game and will also be able to access The Sims 3 Store – a virtual storefront for buying in-game items.
$10 worth of virtual credit is included with the game itself. After that additional bundles of SimPoints will be available to buy via PayPal or credit card.
In addition, all game uploading, downloading and updating will be handled by the new Game Launcher software.
“With such a vibrant and active community as The Sims has, we wanted to build even further on the already immense offline experience, by offering players additional functionality, content and tools available online through the game,” The Sims 3’s executive producer Ben Bell stated.
“One example of the many online tools we’ve added to the game is the Create a Movie tool. Within the game, players can easily set up the camera angle they want, capture in-game footage, play director and producer and then post their movies online to show off to the world.”

Rumour has it that a second device based on webOS will see the light of day before Christmas.
TechCrunch reports that Palm is working on a second, smaller handset as a follow-up to its highly-anticipated Pre.
According to sources, the 'Mini Pre' will address a different market segment to its bigger brother and is perhaps intended to head off any threat from another rumoured device - the iPhone Nano.
So there you have it - an as yet unconfirmed handset is set to go head-to-head in a battle to the death with another as yet unconfirmed handset.
The name at least should give the Palm marketing department some comedy ammo though.

59p may not sound a lot when compared to a full priced console game, but when development costs are low and games are selling in their hundreds of thousands, it still equals a lot of money.
FireMintGames has released some interesting stats about its leading iPhone and iPod Touch title Flight Control, which reveal that since its release on March 6th the game has sold over 700,000 copies. That amounts to over Ł400,000 in revenue.
More detailed stats are available for the period of March 6th to April 27th, where 587,485 copies were downloaded. At its peak the game sold 35,000 on one day (March 28th).
The USA has been the biggest purchaser of the game, accounting for 57 per cent of all sales, with the UK coming in second place with 96,978 copies purchased – 17 per cent of total sales.
A PDF of the report can be downloaded here.

Ready for some totally prototypical corporate non-answers regarding the alleged release of Android 1.5 on T-Mobile USA's G1s? Good. Here you go:
"T-Mobile USA will confirm details of Android 1.5 availability for our T-Mobile G1 customers in the near future."
Doesn't mean much to us -- and it's hard to tell from that alone whether 1.5's actually begun over-the-air distribution -- but at any rate, it seems like they're not ready to talk about it yet. Don't keep us waiting long, guys.

Pacific Islanders are expressing outrage over a popular iPhone game which they say encourages the torture and killing of characters who resemble them.
The Brisbane Times reports that the Pacific Women's Information Network has targeted Pocket God, which puts the player in a deity-like position of power over "primitive islanders." Group spokesperson Elaine Howard - who lives in the United States - told the newspaper:
How do you think people would react if you created a game where you were God and you could create and kill as many Mexicans as you wanted? Or Asians? People would be outraged.
I hope you don't decide to advertise your application in New Zealand or Australia because you will get a backlash of the same intensity.
Dr. Malakai Koloamatangi of New Zealand's Canterbury University added:
To claim [the characters] are not Pacific islanders is ridiculous. Everything about them is Polynesian. How can they justify encouraging the torture of a race in this way? It's disgusting.
I'm not saying let's bring in the thought police but there needs to be limits on what is acceptable, and this surpasses those.
Bolt Creative, which developed the 99-cent app, denied that it intended to depict any actual ethnic group in the game.
