Ouya may not be the popular console out there, but it has beaten its triple A competitors to the punch by being first to include an option for streaming video games. The Android console has teamed up with streaming company Playcast Media to host a free beta program that streams games to the platform.
The two initial offerings in the Playcast beta are Lego Batman 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction."Playcast bridges the visual computation and content gap between Ouya and the consoles," said Playcast CEO Guy de Beer. "In this beta, we will be employing for the first time the power of a public cloud system, and a set of technologies that is set to overcome the limitations of streaming over the open Internet. Initial results have been very encouraging, and we hope to expand the program soon."A final launch date and price for the Playcast Ouya app have yet to be set.Playcast has been around since 2011 where it's offered monthly subscriptions and various rental models to set top boxes, microconsoles and other video-enabled connected devices in France, Portugal and Korea. The company's partners include EA, Ubisoft, Konami, Warner Bros, 2K, Namco Bandai, Square Enix, Capcom, Codemasters, Disney, Sega, Atari and more.

Vendors shipped 281.5 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2014, up 28.6 per cent from the same period last year.
Although sales were down slightly (2.8 per cent) from Q4 2013, this is an expected retrenchment from the holiday quarter shipment volumes.
"The small difference between the two quarters points to sustained strong demand, driven by emerging markets, low-cost devices, and the proliferation of 4G networks,” explained Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team.
“If this is how we start the year, then we can look forward to another record-breaking quarter at the end of the year."
Melissa Chau, senior research manager with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker adds: “The face of the smartphone market is changing rapidly to reflect the rise of its largest market, China, where a record 40 per cent of the smartphones shipped worldwide in 1Q14 were bound to Chinese consumers.”
IDC says it expects total global smartphone shipments to reach 1.2 billion in 2014.
Samsung was once again the worldwide leader in the smartphone market in Q1, shipping more devices than the next four vendors combined.
This hasn’t stopped other vendor’s plans for new smartphone launches this year though.
LG is planning to launch the G3 smartphone which is rumoured to come with a 2K display.
Amazon’s first smartphone is planned for a June launch. Rumoured specs include a 3D user interface, a 12MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera.
Motorola has also just sent out invites for the launch of a new smartphone on May 13th in London. The handset is tipped to be the Moto E, which is said to feature a 4.3-inch display, 5MP rear camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, 1900mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat.

UK studio Big Bit is developing a new mobile-exclusive entry in the long-running Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise for iOS and Android devices, publisher Activision announced this week.
Tony Hawk's Shred Session features a pair of gameplay modes that put a touchscreen-specific spin on the series' traditional skateboarding mechanics. The core Shred Sessions mode features objective-based gameplay in the vein of classic series entries, letting players compare their best scores with friends. Also included is a Survival mode, which challenges players to string together a chain of tricks and combos for as long as possible.
Tony Hawk's Shred Session will launch this summer via iTunes and Google Play.

Thankfully, no one's gone full-Charles-Bronson yet, but the NY Times reports that victims of smartphone theft are using GPS to take the law into their own hands, paying visits to thieves' homes and demanding the return of their stolen phones. "The emergence of this kind of do-it-yourself justice," writes Ian Lovett, "has stirred worries among law enforcement officials that people are putting themselves in danger, taking disproportionate risks for the sake of an easily replaced item." And while hitting "Find My iPhone" can take you to a thief's doorstep, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith urges resisting the impulse to do so. "It's just a phone," he said. "it's not worth losing your life over. Let police officers take care of it. We have backup, guns, radio, jackets — all that stuff civilians don't have.""

James B. Stewart writes in the NYT that recent revelations that Steve Jobs was the driving force in a conspiracy to prevent competitors from poaching employees raises the question: If Steve Jobs were alive today, should he be in jail? Jobs 'was a walking antitrust violation. I'm simply astounded by the risks he seemed willing to take,' says Herbert Hovenkamp, a professor at the University of Iowa College of Law and an expert in antitrust law. 'Didn't he have lawyers advising him? You see this kind of behavior sometimes in small, private or family-run companies, but almost never in large public companies like Apple.' In 2007, Jobs threatened Palm with patent litigation unless Palm agreed not to recruit Apple employees, even though Palm's then-chief executive, Edward Colligan, told him that such a plan was 'likely illegal.' That same year, Jobs wrote Eric E. Schmidt, the chief executive of Google at the time, 'I would be extremely pleased if Google would stop doing this,' referring to its efforts to recruit an Apple engineer. When Jobs learned that the Google recruiter who contacted the Apple employeewould be 'fired within the hour,' he responded with a smiley face. 'How could anyone have approved that?' says Hovenkamp. 'Any competent antitrust counsel would know that's illegal. And they had to know they'd get caught eventually.'"

Remember a couple of days ago when the internet was going all frothy-mouthed over a rumor that Apple would be releasing new EarPods with iBeacon integration and built-in heart rate sensors? Well, turns out to have been a rather poorly thought out joke -- one that just happened to jibe with past rumors. The source of the supposed leak came clean about the hoax and apologized for, well, everything. For putting it out there in the first place, for failing to correct sites that reported it as fact, for failing to reach out to people who contacted him to confirm his story -- basically for letting the entire thing spiral out of control.

Windows Phone's latest update added a lot of features that we've been waiting years for, such as a virtual assistant and notification menu, but a file manager is still notably missing. In a Reddit "Ask me Anything," Microsoft's Joe Belfiore announced that his team is working on having one ready in the Windows Phone Store hopefully by the end of the month, and even had screenshots to prove that it's pretty close to becoming final (shown below). Of course, Microsoft's OS isn't the only one that's mysteriously neglected this particular feature: iOS and stock Android don't have a dedicated file system, either (unless you count third-party apps), so this is a good opportunity for Windows Phone to set itself apart from one of its larger competitors.

We doubt that there's a horde of wearable fans jonesing for Epson's second-gen Moverio glasses -- not after Google's one-day Glass sale, anyway -- but they're at last available, several weeks behind schedule. Spend $700 and the just-shipping BT-200 headset will put a basic (and frankly decrepit) Android 4.0 interface in front of your eyes. It does have a few tricks up its sleeve that Google can't quite match, though. There's head-motion tracking, wireless video mirroring and Dolby Digital Plus surround sound; you'll also get a long-overdue camera whose LED makes it clear that you're recording. The new Moverio is far from reproducing the cachet (or social stigmas) of Google's eyepiece, but look at it this way: The money you save by skimping on trendier eyewear can be put toward nobler pursuits.

In some corners of the world, even starter smartphones like the ZTE Open are too costly; basic cellphones such as the Nokia 105 thrive in areas where whole families can only afford one device. However, ARM believes that smartphones will soon be within reach of just about anyone. While it's possible to make a $25 Firefox OS phone today, ARM now expects to see a $20 Android phone within the "next few months." It might not actually be possible to go cheaper using current manufacturing techniques, the chip designer says.

Tesco has revealed that it will launch an Android smartphone by the end of the year.
Philip Clarke, Tesco’s chief executive, told BBC Radio 5 Live that the handset will be called the Hudl smartphone and will come with pre-installed Tesco services and feature hardware comparable to the Galaxy S5. While the device will run on Google’s Android operating system, specific details about its screen size or cost are currently unknown. Clarke did reveal that the Hudl smartphone will have ‘aggressive pricing’.
The smartphone will be part of the new Hudl range, the first product of which was the Hudl tablet, which has sold half a million units since its launch last year.

Sega has launched its mobile game Dragon Coins - already out in Japan - on these shores.Dragon Coins is live now on the App Store and Google Play, where it's a free download supported by in-app purchases. You can buy a sack of coins for Ł6.99 or a bag of coins for Ł2.99.Sega says Dragon Coins "combines the deep elements of RPG battle and party management systems with the quick, pick-up-and-play appeal of arcade coin-dozer fun". It looks like a combination of those 2p machines you get in arcades and Pokémon. You place coins on the moving platform to charge up monsters for attacks. Do it properly and you trigger combos. Monsters evolve and can be fused with coins won in battle or bought with real-world money. There are hundreds of monsters to collect, Sega said.Sega Networks chief Chris Olson said: "Full of personality and flair, Dragon Coins continues our mission to bring diverse, high-quality titles to the mobile space."Players will come for the fun coin-dozer gameplay, but stay for the in-depth RPG system in this quirky and deceptively-deep title."

Apple insists that the US government doesn't have backdoor access to its data(despite signs to the contrary). So what happens when law enforcement comes knocking at the company's door, then? We have a fairly good idea as of this week. The company has published guidelines showing just what data it can provide to the authorities and the legal steps needed to get that information. As a rule, Apple can hand over anything from iCloud and its stores as long as there's a proper court order, subpoena or warrant. It can also pull call records, contacts, text messages and media from locked iOS devices sent to its headquarters in Cupertino, although calendars, email and third-party apps are off-limits.

We hope you're happy with 4G, because 5G's magical land of unicorns and10Gbps speeds still isn't coming until 2020 or so. However, Japanese carrier DoCoMo is still hard at work developing the tech and has now begun trials with some formidable hardware allies. Those include Samsung (who already tested1Gbps 5G hardware in Korea), along with Nokia, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, to name a few. The group aims to see if high frequency bands (greater than 6GHz) can support speeds up to 10Gbps, even if masses of devices in a small area are vying for bandwidth. The first tests will be limited to an indoor research facility in Japan, then move to outdoor field trials next year. DoCoMo hopes standardization will come in 2016, but there's a lot of hurdles to clear before the mythical 1-second wireless movie download is upon us.

If law enforcement gets hold of your locked iPhone and has some interest in its contents, Apple can pull all kinds of content from the device, including texts, contacts, photos and videos, call history and audio recordings. The company said in a new document that provides guidance for law enforcement agencies on the kinds of information Apple can provide and what methods can be used to obtain it that if served with a search warrant, officials will help law enforcement agents extract specific application-specific data from a locked iOS device. However, that data appears to be limited to information related to Apple apps, such as iMessage, the contacts and the camera. Email contents and calendar data can't be extracted, the company said in the guidelines."

Samsung has announced ‘Swarovski for Samsung’ – a collection of exclusive Swarovski crystal accessories for the Galaxy S5 and Gear Fit.
The collection includes crystal-encrusted covers for the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone and crystal charms for the Gear Fit smartwatch.
Through a “specially developed application process”, Swarovski’s fine crystal rocks have been embedded into the Galaxy S5’s back cover, with two crystal effects merged into a single motif as another design feature.
The Gear Fit charm sliders are available in a selection of colours and styles, with the option to mix-and-match. Bar colours include brown, ‘golden shadow’ and crystal, while dangle styles include ‘siam heart’, ‘light rose heart’, ‘crystal skull’, ‘anthracite skull’, ‘crystal star’, ‘blue star’ and ‘golden shadow lips’ crystals.
The collaboration follows a partnership between the two brands at the recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, and “marks the first time in over a century that Swarovski has partnered in a collaboration of this scale, fully integrating its branding into the Samsung collection,” the firm said.
“With technology and fashion so deeply intertwined, we at Samsung want to support our customers in expressing themselves through technological innovation and great partnerships,” said Simon Stanford, VP of IT and mobile for Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland.
“Collaborating with Swarovski on this stunning collection of accessories highlights our on-going commitment to providing people with devices that express their individual personalities and tastes.”
“Samsung and Swarovski share a commitment to bringing high quality, highly desired products to the consumer market, and together, we have succeeded with the Swarovski for Samsung collection,” said Christoph Kargruber, EVP of global marketing for Swarovski Professional.
The Swarovski for Samsung collection will be available to buy in the UK on Samsung’s online store from May 8th and at selected Samsung stores from May 22nd.

Mobile gaming is crystallizing around one concept: games must be free-to-play. As an industry, it seems to work — there's no shortage of players willing to drop money on microtransactions and in-app purchases. But for making compelling or unusual games, this is a problem. 'Pitch a title that isn't games-as-a-service to publishers or investors and they'll practically install new doors to slam in your face. ... Free-to-play advocates naturally think their model is dominant because "that's what mobile gamers want," explaining that in-app purchases are just the players way of saying they care. If they've entertained the more dull notion that free-to-play is popular because... well, it's free? They seem not to let on. ... Recent data shows 20 percent of mobile games get opened once and never again. 66 percent have never played beyond the first 24 hours and indeed most purchases happen in the first week of play. Amazingly only around two to three percent of gamers pay anything at all for games, and even more hair-raising is the fact that 50 percent of all revenue comes from just 0.2 percent of players. This is a statistically insignificant amount of happy gamers and nothing that gives you a basis to make claims about "what people want."'"

Mozilla today released Firefox OS version 1.3 to its partners for implementing in their smartphones. There are many new features for both users and developers, and the first phone to feature them is the ZTE Open C, which is available for sale as of today on eBay. First and foremost, Firefox OS users can expect dual-SIM dual-standby (DSDS) support, which gives you two lines on compatible phones, a popular feature in emerging markets. DSDS lets dual-SIM devices individually manage two different SIMs for calling, texting, or data through the 'SIM Manager' interface

Remember the Tizen operating system? It's not a household name, but it did make an appearance on the second wave of Samsung Galaxy Gear devices. We're still waiting for a full-fledged phone running the open-source OS, though, and we may just see one this year. According to sources who spoke with the Wall Street Journal, Samsung will launch a Tizen handset in Russia "in the coming weeks," and a Tizen device will reach India soon after. While that's about it in terms of details, one thing is clear: Samsung will look outside the US and Europe to get the fledgling operating system off the ground and into phones.

Samsung has already launched a cavalcade of new Android tablets this year, but it looks like the company isn't quite done yet. SamMobile claims to have the first photos of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, a recently rumored Android design that would mark Samsung's return to slates with OLED displays. As the name suggests, it would have a 10.5-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 AMOLED panel that promises higher contrast and bolder colors than an LCD; there's reportedly an 8.4-inch equivalent in the works, too.

The two companies revealed in a joint announcement that both Half-Life 2 and Portal can now be purchased from Google's store for Nvidia's handheld.

The iPhone 6 is rumoured to launch a month earlier than expected and with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
According to BrightWire, Apple will incorporate an NFC payment function in the next gen iPhone'.
In March, PCR reported that sources indicated the iPhone 6 would launch in September, which would be in keeping with the launch of the iPhone 5 (September 2012) and the iPhone 5S (September 2013).
But according to the Economic Daily News (via Reuters), it appears that Apple will unveil its next iPhone in August.
A larger 5.5-inch or 5.6-inch version of the iPhone 6 is planned for release in September 2014.
The sources said that together 80 million iPhone 6 smartphones would be produced this year.
The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is rumoured to come with 10MP camera and humidity, pressure and temperature sensors.
The 5.5/5.6-inch device is rumoured to not feature Gorilla Glass, like previous models, but insteadwill have a sapphire screen.

Tomi Ahonen's newly released 2014 Almanac reveals such current mobile phone industry data gems as: 'The mobile subscription rate is at or very very nearly at 100%. Although Windows 8.1's store has a healthy stock of apps, actually finding those apps has been a pain at times. Much of the store's interface has been hidden, and it hasn't always been clear where to go if you're just getting started. Starting today, it's considerably easier to get around: Microsoft is pushing out a Windows Store update that puts more content front and center. The navigation bar is now a permanent fixture on the screen, and points you to popular areas like the categories and top app charts. You'll also see themed collections (such as music apps) and multiple featured selections right on the first store page.

Running apps from one mobile platform on another is theoretically great for boosting your app selection, but it's not a trivial task -- even BlackBerry's Android support is rough. However, some Columbia University students have managed the daunting feat of running iOS apps on Android with their Cider compatibility layer. This isn't a regular emulator or virtual machine, like you might expect. Instead, it simply tricks apps into believing that they're in a native environment: they adapt code on the fly to make it work with Android's kernel and programming libraries. Even 3D benchmarks run properly.

Becky Stern at Adafruit has created a guide on how to create an open source NFC ringor other wearable to mod and unlock your Android phone. From the tutorial: 'Unlock your phone by just picking it up! No more pesky password or gesture PIN, just scan an NFC tag! This guide covers creating an NFC ring, putting an NFC tag in your nail polish, modding your Android installation to read tags from the lockscreen, and creating an automation toolchain to unlock the phone when the desired tag is scanned.' But it will use the iPhone to prove to shops that you are really you.
Funny to see the Apple NFC rumours re-surface again this week.
Apparently, Cupertino has done a deal with a Chinese bank to support an NFC-enabled Passbook app that can make payments. And it’s gearing up to include NFC in iPhone 6.
It’s only served to amplify the noise around the firm’s mooted move into mobile payments, which has chugged on for years now.
Now, I don’t have any insider info on this (does anyone when it comes to Apple?), but I have read loads and loads of technical payment papers to try to get my head around what might happen next. And nothing yet has changed the contention I have always held:
Apple will not do payments. Apple will do authentication.
To explain why, let’s just go back to the kind of moronic analysis that I’m comfortable with. This will take the form of a conversation with myself.
(Any payment geeks can shoot me down. In fact, I’d encourage it. It’s the only way to learn).
From a consumer point of view, are payments ‘broken’?
No. Cash or cards take seconds to use. And they’re universally accepted (in developed marketed)
From a merchant point of view, are payments broken?
Sort of. Cash is expensive and dirty. Card machines cost a lot (hence the success of Square et al), and commissions are expensive.
From a merchant point of view, is consumer insight broken?
God yes. Online retailers know everything about their customers; physical stores next to nothing.
So how can high street retailers acquire this info?
By getting people to shop from their phones, where there’s an opportunity to gather and aggregate data.
But we know that customers don’t think payment is broken
I know, so you offer them something else
Ah, so it all comes back to offers and loyalty and discounts etc
Yes. But also a more personalised service, the chance to make payments anywhere in store, and end to queuing, maybe even get personalised pricing based on your previous spending.
How does Apple make this happen?
I don’t know for sure. No one does. But here’s a guess. Apple introduces some kind of payment API for apps. It means that apps or Passbook products can ask ‘do you want this app to store your card info?’ and one click retrieves the details from your iTunes account.
So now, when you’re shopping in store with that retailer, the app will appear on your home screen (GPS enabled) you’ll be able to activate all kinds of offers and then check out instantly with a TouchID fingerprint.
So doesn’t that move Apple into payments?
No. Apple is not moving any money around. It’s not taking a fee. I believe any move in direction of payment processing would be suicide for Apple. Have you seen the grief that PayPal gets? No, this is providing speedy access to stored payment details, and a reliable form of user authentication. Most important it's helping retailers make more sales.
What’s in it for Cupertino?
First and most important, it keeps iPhones at the centre of users’ lives. Apple makes 40 per cent margin on $600 phones. This is the primary business it has to protect and sustain.
What else?
It gives Apple access to transactional data. It can use this serve up insights and new ad services to brands – and charge for them. If you think about it, this stuff is gold dust – and it’s never been deployed by Visa or MasterCard.
How will Apple-authenticated transactions take place in store?
I think Apple is agnostic about this. All it cares about is being able to exercise control. That’s why it didn’t ever fancy using NFC when it was all about operators putting wallets in the SIM.
Now that HCE lets you put a wallet in the cloud, Apple is free to consider NFC again. Hence those rumours. It can happily use NFC along with Beacons and other ideas.
Would Apple authenticated payments be safe?
Well, this is where I struggle. Essentially, the key to answering this lies with a full understanding of tokenisation. An understanding I just don’t have.
But broadly, tokens represent a way to make ‘card not present’ payments very safe. They do this by generating a random token to make a transaction, which is useless to anyone that intercepts it.
This token can only be generated by an trusted device (like a phone). How can a bank trust this device? Well, that’s where Apple wins – thanks to a combo biometrics and credit records.
Last year, Visa and MasterCard confirmed they will move towards tokenisation and as I understand it, Apple is devising a system to incorporate it.
The above might all be bollocks. The raving of someone who talks to himself. In print, for God's sake.
Like I said, I don’t have a hotline to Tim Cook, despite sharing a similarly boring two syllable name.
Maybe we'll know what the plans are in a few months' time at the next big Apple launch event. But then it's equally possible that the 'one more thing' might not be 'we're going to revolutionise retail' but 'the iPad now comes in black."

Samsung is rebranding Heathrow Terminal 5 as ‘Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5’.
The campaign, in conjunction with JCDecaux Airport, is to raise awareness of Samsung’s flagship mobile and is the first time Heathrow has permitted a brand takeover at T5.
The two-week rebranding kicks off on May 19th and sees Samsung take over the signage, wayfinding, website and every single digital screen at the terminal.
Russell Taylor, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, at Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said: “We are always looking for ways to maximise brand impact and this activity is testament to that. The partnership with Heathrow Airport and JCDecaux Airport was a one-off opportunity to push the boundaries like no other brand has been allowed to do before.”
So, whether you’re a Samsung fan or not, if you’re planning to do any travelling from Heathrow T5 this month you won’t be able to escape the smartphone.
The Galaxy S5 launched in April along side Samsung’s new range of wearable tech devices.
The smartphone comes with a 16MP camera with 4K video capabilities, 5.1-inch display, 2.5GHz Quad-Core processor, 2GB of RAM and a batter that can last 20 per cent longer than the Galaxy S4’s.
While the device may be one of most popular handsets on the market, just a few weeks after its launch a number of owners complained about a major flaw with the device’s camera.
Just last week Samsung announced a collection of exclusive Swarovski crystal accessories for the Galaxy S5 and Gear Fit activity tracker band.

Just when people got used to good smartphones costing $200 with a 2-year contract, they also started to realize that those 2-year contracts were bad news. Still, it's often more palatable than fronting $600 for good, new hardware. But that's starting to change. Cell phone internals are getting cheap enough that prices for capable devices have been creeping downward below $200 without a contract. We ran into something similar with the PC industry some years back — previous-gen chips had no trouble running next-gen software (excluding games with bleeding-edge graphics), and so the impetus to keep getting the latest-and-greatest hardware disappeared for a lot of people. That revolution is underway now for smartphones, and it's going to shake things up for everybody, including Apple and Samsung. But the biggest effects will be felt in the developing world: '[F]or a vast number of people in a vast number of countries, the cheap handset will be the first screen, and the only screen. Their primary interface with the world. A way of connecting to the Internet where there are no telephone lines or coaxial cables or even electricity. In nations without subsidized cell phone contracts or access to consumer credit, the $50-and-you-own-it handset is going to be transformative

Ouya, the Kickstarted, Android-based gaming console, had a much easier time selling people the idea of a mini-console than selling people on the console itself. Once people got over the excitement of seeing an indie console break into the market, they asked, 'Wait, why would I want to play Android games on my living room TV?' Almost a year has passed, and we're finally seeing an answer to that question: party gaming.

The Galaxy S5 was widely tipped to launch with iris-scanning capabilities. When the crunch time came, Samsung played safe with only fingerprint sensor support.According to the Wall Street Journal, the eye-centric tech is still on the company's radar and could soon debut in new high- and low-end phones alike. "We're looking at various types of biometric [mechanisms] and one of things that everybody is looking at is iris detection," Samsung executive Rhee In-jong admitted today, adding that it would likely be included in flagship smartphones first. Like fingerprint recognition, iris scanning would likely form another link inSamsung's Knox platform, putting it in good stead with big organizations like the US government. Samsung's desire to "follow the market trend" often causes it to beat rivals to market with features that customers rarely use. Iris scanning could well be the next example.

When a $600 smartphone isn't considered "premium," then we're all in deep, deep trouble. That's the problem facing Samsung's Galaxy S5, however, with scores of people hoping that an even more expensive version of the flagship is lurking just around the corner. The folks over at PhoneArena are showing off an image of what purports to be the "Galaxy S5 Prime," apparently packing a QHD display and some spec bumps to ensure it remains a few Snapdragon model numbers ahead of itsimmediate rivals. The other big alleged difference is that the handset will come with an aluminum body, in the hope of luring back any customers who are drawn towards the HTC One's shinier chassis. Naturally, there's no proof that such a device actually exists, but the images do show some subtle differences compared to the regular GS5 we know today: The optical blood pressure monitor appears to sit behind the same glass panel as the camera sensor, and there's no speaker grille on the lower-left quarter of the rear case. All in all, we're going to file this in the "we'll believe it when we see it" box, since even Samsung wouldn't be crazy enough to replace its flagship just months after launch, would it?

Smartphones with screens over 5-inches are on the rise, according to the latest research from Canalys.
A third of the 279.4 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2014 were ‘phablets’.
In Europe alone, 27 per cent of all shipments were phablet-sized.
Jessica Kwee, an analyst at Canalys, said: "The trend is unmistakably towards larger-screen handsets at the high end of the market. Consumers now expect high-end devices to have large displays, and Apple's absence in this market will clearly not last long."
Apple is expected to launch a 5.5-inch smartphone this year, along with a 4.7-inch iPhone 6.
Phablets are not the only products on the rise. Curry’s/PC World have revealed that a wide range of electrical goods have seen a sales increase in the lead up to summer.
Fans are up 59 per cent week-on-week, ice cream makers have seen a 25 per cent increase and air-conditioning products are up 175 per cent.

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatches now make up 70 percent of the market, outperforming rival models from Pebble and Motorola.
A report on wearable technology published by analyst Strategy Analytics also revealed that global smartwatch shipments grew by 250 per cent in Q1 2014.
Over half a million Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatches have been sold into the channel, making one in seven smartwatches sold a Samsung device.
Strategy Analytics’ research observed products available during the first three months of 2014, meaning that Samsung’s newer Gear 2, Gear Neo and Gear Fit – which were announced at CES in January – didn’t count towards the numbers.
The rest of the smartwatch market is split between firms such as Intel, Motorola, Sony and smaller independent vendors such as Kickstarter success Pebble.
Samsung rival Apple has long been rumoured to be developing a smartwatch of its own, but how such a device could impact sales of Samsung’s multi-generation wearable technology offering remains to be seen.

Seven months after it began letting customers trade in their iPhones at its retail stores, Apple's expanded its Reuse and Recycle programme to include iPads. From today, anyone with an iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini can walk into an Apple Store, hand over their tablet and receive credit towards a new iOS device. However, the company will not accept current-generation devices like the iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina display. As with its iPhone programme, Apple will assess the condition of devices before providing a trade-in value, so don't expect a huge return if your iPad has seen better days.

It’s worse than PC in some ways,' claims Testronic's Chris Rowley
The continued fragmentation of the Android market is an absolute nightmare for game developers and testing firms, QA experts have told Develop.
Speaking as part of a roundtable looking at the state of QA and localisation in games, Testronic operations director Chris Rowley said the issue of differing mobile devices was accelerating, and believes the problem won’t be fixed anytime soon.
“The fragmentation around Android is an absolute nightmare, and it’s actually accelerating,” he said.
“We’ve always tried to focus on the top 20 or so of the most popular platforms, but that isn’t consistent across different territories. It’s worse than PC in some ways. And there’s no interest from manufacturers to standardise across devices.”
Stuart Pratt, delivery manager at online poker firm PKR, also spoke out against the increasing fragmentation of the market, and claimed 139 new Android devices had been released this year alone.
He stated there was “no way” companies like his could buy every single device and test against them.
“And we can’t just concentrate on the big companies like Samsung – now there are tablets from supermarkets, too," said Pratt.
"The Hudl from Tesco sold out over Christmas, so we couldn’t get one and didn’t know if our game worked or not until later. But what are we meant to do?”
You can read our full QA and localisation roundtable in which experts discuss the biggest issues currently facing the sector here.
Are you experiencing issues with Android fragmentation?

Apple says it's fixed a server bug that was affecting "some" former iMessage users who had tried to switch to Android or another OS. However, it admits there's another problem with its messaging platform that it still hasn't managed to address. According to Re/code, the first bug was making it difficult for Apple staff to keep track of which phone numbers are currently associated with an iPhone -- information that is essential for the proper running of the iMessage. Without an accurate database, ex-iPhone users could find that some of their SMS messages are mistakenly treated as iMessages and sucked into the bowels of an Apple's datacenter, from whence they may never return. As for the remaining flaws, and iMessage's broader dependence on up-to-the-minute record-keeping, Apple says it's working on a fuller solution that will come in a "future software update." In the meantime, the best advice for any iPhone leaver is still to manually disable iMessage and return to regular SMS before they power down for the final time.

Bloomberg reports that after Apple's patent victory in court last week over smart-phone rival Samsung, Apple is seeking a sales ban on several specific phones from Samsung; none of them are currently flagship devices. "The nine devices targeted by Cupertino, California-based Apple for a U.S. sales ban include the Admire, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S3 and Stratosphere."Getting the competition blocked from the marketplace over patent claims is something that Apple's tried before in connection with its beef with Samsung, and the company has had mixedresults, depending on jurisdiction. Last week's decision in favor of Apple hints that the jury didn't think the company deserved the entire $2.2 billion it was seeking, awarding (a mere) $120 million, instead.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google may be planning to commoditze 3-D scanning by building the tech of its Project Tango project (essentially, thus far, a phone-sized handheld with 3-D sensing capabilities) into tablets. The Register speculates: "Given that Google has already announced the Project Tango smartphone, it seems likely that it would extend the technology to tablets, and the seven-inch form factor would tie in nicely with the existing Nexus 7 design. ...Google is hoping that developers can build applications to use the scanning capabilities of the Tango hardware. Suggested topics include providing guides for visually impaired people, building gaming maps based on actual rooms, and possibly augmenting Google Maps with interior details – Street View becoming Home View perhaps?" Setting aside what brand it might bear, how would you employ a portable 3-D scanner?

Ubisoft's mobile companion app for Watch Dogs is now available on Androidand iOS, and gives players the opportunity to interact with others in the game's online sections. Though the word "companion" doesn't have the same ring to it in the "ctOS Mobile" app, as players use it to mess with others' surroundings in an attempt to thwart their attempts to reach the finish line in both race and free ride modes.
For instance, players within the ctOS Mobile app can control a Chicago PD helicopter and go on the hunt for their rivals, controlling ctOS devices within the helicopter's range like road blockers and traffic lights to halt other players. Mobile players will also dispatch Chicago police units like squad cars and SWAT teams and upgrade their effectiveness. As app users complete challenges, they earn experience and skill points, with which they can enhance their police arsenal as well as their own abilities.
The app is free to download and doesn't require that players own the console game. Ubisoft has a list of its compatible devices on its blog. Our review ofWatch Dogs, now available today, notes that the game is "a more fluid and modern power fantasy than we're used to," likening players in the game to being a wizard.

"Could Eddy's [Cue] team have built a subscription service? Of course." That's what Apple CEO Tim Cook told the New York Times today following the announcement that it had acquired Beats Electronics. But the fact of the matter remains, the company didn't. Instead it went out and purchased a pre-existing service. As the digital music industry shifted away from paying for individual tracks and albums towards an all-you-can-eat model, iTunes stuck to its guns. That's left Cupertino in the slightly odd position of not being at the forefront of innovation in the industry. Observers have been suggesting that Apple would launch it's own Spotify killer any day now, but Tim Cook seems to believe the company's resources would be better used else where. "We could've built those 27 other things ourselves, too," referencing the 27 other companies acquired over the last year, "you don't build everything yourself." That's especially true if you think that you're buying the "first subscription service that really got it right," as he told Re/code.

Apple is making things official: Dr. Dre's Beats Electronics belongs to Cupertino, and it cost them $3 billion. Rumors had circulated that CEO Tim Cook was interested in nabbing up the audio accessory and music-streaming outfit, corroborated by a beer-drenched video in which Dre himself declared that he had become "the first billionaire in hip-hop." And now, after Financial Times had already let the cat out of the bag, we have Apple's side of the story. As expected, co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre (Andre Young) will join Cook and VP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue, but their exact job titles haven't been revealed just yet.

AT&T promised back in January that it would launch ASUS' PadFone X hybrid, but the device has been stuck in limbo ever since -- the carrier hasn't given out much more than specs for the phone-and-tablet combo. Today, though, there's finally a date to mark on your calendar. The PadFone X should be available on June 6th for $199 on a two-year contract, or $23 per month if you buy it on an 18-month Next payment plan.

Your Dragon Quest 8 has begun on iOS and Android, marking the first of the RPG series' mobile ports to reach the West. You can take the PS2 adventure on the go for $20 stateside, or Ł14/18 Euros across the ocean.
The port promises "streamlined" touchscreen controls with freely positional d-pads and reworked combat that allows for both one-tap standoffs and more strategic approaches. Going by footage published by it doesn't seem to feature the voice acting found in the PS2 game. We suspect that means it's based on the Japanese original, since that was a feature added later to Western versions.
Square Enix announced last year it was bringing Dragon Quest 1-8 to smartphones, and it's re-released 1, 4 and 8 so far. The first two of those were limited to Japan, and it's unknown what the publisher's plans are for bringing other entries West.

When Samsung debuted its new line of Tizen-powered wearables, it looked like the original Galaxy Gear had been put on notice. Instead of leaving early adopters in the cold, the Korean smartphone maker has decided to make good on its promise to bring the wearable up to date -- by switching it from Android over to its own OS. The update includes improvements to performance and battery life, a new standalone music player, customizable shortcuts, and voice-controlled camera commands. By installing the update, which at the moment is available as amanual download or via Samsung's Kies software, you will lose any third-party tweaks or unsupported Android features that you've previously installed. However, you will gain many of the features present on the Gear 2 (except those dependent on additional sensors). Samsung hasn't pushed an over-the-air update out yet, but that may not be a bad thing. It means some that may have accepted the update out of hand are less likely to make a decision they might regret later.

We knew it existed but now it's finally crawled out of some jungle (or beach vacation) to go official. Samsung's Galaxy S5 Active is available today on AT&T and while ruggedized phones typically lack.. something compared to flagship devices, this time it looks like no notable corners were cut. The Galaxy S5 Active has the same full-HD AMOLED 5.1-inch screen, while the 16-megapixel camera and fingerprint sensor are also lodged into the rugged smartphone. That said, water-resistance is now part of the original GS5's bag of tricks, which makes it less of selling point here. Regardless, there's the shock-resistant dust-proof shell and a burlier look: even if it's dreamy rendered view we're seeing here, the metallic details and finish could well win over Galaxy fans that aren't pro-plastic -- we're a little intrigued to see it IRL.
