One of the videogames industry's most persistent pieces of vapourware, the Phantom Game Service, is still "moving forward in development," according to the company responsible for the as-yet unseen product, Infinium Labs.
In a trading statement released yesterday, Infinium claimed that the service - described as "the first end-to-end, on-demand game service for delivery to the living room" - is being licensed to PC manufacturers at present.
However, the reassurance came even as it emerged that the often-controversial company, which has been accused of existing purely in an attempt to reap investment cash and has been investigated by the SEC over irregularities regarding the promotion of its shares, is being sued by former boss Kevin Bachus over alleged unpaid wages.
Infinium first touted the idea of the Phantom Game Service - and the Phantom console which would act as the head-end in the living room - over three years ago, and has charged headlong through ever release date it has set itself since then.
This time around, the firm is taking no chances - and the trading update gives no indication whatsoever of when the service might actually launch.
Not that this stops Infinium from missing deadlines; the company also revealed in the same update that its plan to release the Phantom Lapboard, a combination keyboard and mouse device which was originally envisaged as the controller for the Phantom, has seen the launch date slip from "mid-2006" to October.
The firm's new president and CEO, Greg Koler, remained upbeat in the statement. "We are on a fast pace crossing over the threshold of manufacturing and marketing our first product, the Phantom Lapboard," he commented. "Everything is on schedule for first arrivals of the Phantom Lapboard this October in the US market."
However, with the firm's losses now running at almost $70 million since its inception and not a single product on shelves or revenue-generating deal in the bag, it remains to be seen how much more patience the investment community will afford to Infinium - especially in the wake of the high-profile collapse of another industry albatross, Gizmondo.

UK high street retailer HMV has announced the launch of its latest initiative for delivering games, music and movies to customers - with the Txt2Buy system set to allow customers to order products from their mobile phones.
The service, which has been launched by the retail giant in cooperation with mobile CRM technology provider Digital Rum, means that customers will be able to buy products simply by texting in shortcodes found in HMV's advertising.
After texting in their shortcode, users will receive a reply with a mobile Internet link that will allow them to securely pay for purchases on credit cards. Customers will also be able to store their credit card details to avoid re-entering them.\
"By combining SMS ordering with secure credit/debit card payment via the mobile internet, HMV is able to extend the order and payment capability of its high value product portfolio across any promotional medium - print, radio and television - simply by adding an SMS short code," Digital Rum's VP of sales, Russell Tarr, told financial technology publication Finextra.
The move makes HMV into one of the first companies to leverage the mobile phone platform as a way of selling boxed games in the UK. The retailer has previously stated that it hopes to target a significantly larger share of the UK games market; although it is a market leader in music and movies, in the games sector HMV is dwarfed by specialist rival GAME.

Hi guys, as I promised more than one year ago here is Cybersaurus, a new game for the Zodiac. You can find screenshots and a working demo at http://www.darxun.com/cbs.htm.
P.S.:
The game is made for newer PalmOS devices with 400 Mhz processors, but if you tweak the options it can run on the Zodiac at 480x320 as well. Deactivate the background in the options and reduce the view depth in order to get a decent frame reate.

Microsoft reps have denied recent rumors alleging that it has partnered with a number of Japanese consumer electronics companies to develop a device to compete in Japan with Apple's iPod.
Several reports are currently making the rounds, reporting that Microsoft has collaborated with eight other companies to create a new product to compete with Apple.
"The announcement that came out of Japan this week was simply about the Japanese launch of Windows Media Player 11," said a Microsoft representative who asked not to be named. "Due to translation issues the announcement was misconstrued to sound like Microsoft was developing a rival to the iPod; that's just not the case."
According to Microsoft, the press release (which is in Japanese) actually states that Microsoft announced availability for its new WMP 11 in the Japanese market. The companies listed in the release are companies that Microsoft has partnered with in Japan to ensure a good user experience. These companies have all agreed to support Windows Digital Rights Management 10 for portable devices.
"The companies listed in the Japanese release are device partners," the representative said. "For example, in the U.S. one of our device partners is iRiver. We've partnered closely with them to ensure that their Clix [media player] device runs WMP 11 technology."
The release lists both device partners and service partners. Device partners include iRiver Japan, NTT DoCoMo, CreativeMedia, Toshiba, and Victor JVC. Service partners include The Language Channel, a subscription-based e-learning service; OCN Music Store, which is used for Portable Media Center (PMC)-optimized video downloads; and Napster Japan. Napster Japan service is slated to become available in the fall of 2006.
"The announcement was written about the WMP 11 launch in Japan," said Microsoft representative Sally Julien. "The companies listed are partners who will use the technology in their products, just as they have done with WMP 10."
Both sources at Microsoft refused to comment when asked whether the company has plans to launch its own MP3 player. In addition, Microsoft refused to confirm recent rumors regarding a portable gaming device dubbed "xplayer."
"We don't comment on speculation," Julien said. "There are a ton of rumors out there right now but we have nothing to announce at this time."
Microsoft has already unveiled its WMP 11 technology in the states. The player comes integrated with MTV's URGE digital music service. Similar to existing music download services, URGE also offers music blogs, feeds, editorial content, radio, and MTV/VH1/CMT channel hubs. URGE incorporates MusicNet's 2 million-track music library.
Microsoft reps say U.S. consumers can expect to see verified MEDIA devices rolling out to retail stores in the coming months. These devices will be interoperable with WMP 11 and URGE.

Criitical Posted this news/release:
Hi,
Following the recent release of sweetlilmre's SDL port for the Gizmondo, I thought I'd have a quick go at using it to port the GP2X port of chui's uae4all to the Gizmondo. It works, to a large extent (except for sound, and sundy other issues that are noted in the documentation).
I've attached release 1 of the port to this post, and will update it as I sort out the issues that still exist.
Please read the README_GIZMONDO.txt file before asking questions - if I've already provided an adequate answer in that text file I will be VERY annoyed that you didn't bother to read it before asking a question. I don't write instructions for fun.

News via real Tech News
The biggest beach or poolside risk before the iPod and other high cost electronics came along was a thief getting your beer or maybe nabbing your wallet. Unfortunately, the old hide-it-in-the-shoe method is not very effective, and with sand and sun involved, also not very practical in safeguarding delicate electronics. Enter the Yelpie - a bright yellow battery-operated electronic safe that shrieks when you tug on it.
So, what is Yelpie? It is a patented, high density plastic device that is battery powered, lightweight and portable. To operate you simply open up Yelpie, stash your gear, and arm it with a four digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). Any attempt to move the device will result in a 90 decibel alarm sounding which will attract a lot of attention. Yelpie’s clever design means that an accidental bump will not set it off. It needs repeated movements over less than a second to go into alarm. Once in alarm, it can be silenced (and unlocked) by entering your PIN. If the movement stops, for example, after the thieves have dropped Yelpie, the alarm will shut down within 30 seconds. Once the alarm has ceased, Yelpie is once more watching out for your valuables.
The Yelpie also offers a weatherproof storage place to keep sand and rain out of your expensive electronic devices.
An extra feature of Yelpie is that the shoulder strap can be threaded through handbags and other items and pulled tight. It would then be almost impossible to get the bag off without setting of the alarm..

Yep, it's the 30GB iPod (with video) as we all know and love or loathe it, but now it's back U2 Special Edition with that signature red click-wheel (unlike the "traditional" all black model). Just in case the gimmick's worn off now that the pent up demand for black iPods have been met, though, and it also has a metal posterior, and comes with a special iTunes Music Store coupon redeemable for a 30-minute video of music videos and band interviews. So let's review: red click-wheel, black metal back, "free" 30 minute U2 video -- you pay $30 more than the regular 30GB iPod ($329 as opposed to $299). What a steal. Ahem.

If it wasn't yet clear to you that the age of the DIY mashup is upon us, a new set of toys from a company called BlueBox -- which let even iPod-toting tweens "enhance" their tunes by dropping beats and sound effects -- should remove any lingering doubts. The three members of the new miJam series, which all attach to standard headpone jacks - a guitar, mixing board, and electronic drumsticks -- bear little resemblance to their non-toy counterparts, as all of the effects are triggered by buttons instead of real drumming or thrashing. Even the mixer sounds like it would be a letdown for budding DJ's, delivering canned scratches that will in no way prepare them for the beat-matching they'll being doing in a few years on their Numarks. Still, kids are pretty easily entertained, so the flashing lights and loud noises should probably hold their interest for a few minutes longer than your average gimmicky accessory. Like so many other pre-release products we bring you, we have no idea when these are coming out nor how much they'll sell for.

C2Doom is a Doom port for Nokia S60 and S80 phones. The C2Doom is based on SDL Doom by Sam Lantiga and a version developed from Doom for Nokia 9210, also called CDoom. SDL, Simple DirectMedia Layer is a cross-platform multimedia library that is also ported to S60 and S80 platforms.
The C2Doom for Nokia S60 and Nokia S80 phones offers same game playing elements as the original PC Doom. There are same episodes, maps, graphics and music than in PC version. As orginal version of Doom, also this version has has a multiplayer game - however this time implemented to be played over bluetooth. The Doom games has two separate elements: a game engine and a game data. The C2Doom is the engine and you need game data prior to play Doom.
The Doom game data, episodes, maps, graphics, music, SFXs and such are stored in the the WAD files, which are still property of Id Software. This Doom engine supports many different WAD files, very same files that you have with your PC version of Doom. The most accessible WAD is a shareware Doom 1 episode 1, that you may found from Id Software site.
WAD files should be places in a wads directory on the memory card, i.e. e:\wads\doom1.wad

It might be the hip-cool thing these days to make an iPod dock with a 7-inch screen for the iPod user that has it all, but we're not so sure this i1055 Video System from iLuv is quite legit. First off, we just saw the first of these devices -- the Sonic Impact K1 -- a week ago, and it didn't even look to be out of the prototype stage yet. The K1 was also quite bulky, yet didn't have room for a DVD drive which this i1055 claims to have. Finally, the back of this device, where they show the iPod being docked, is a total concept render, and not a very good one at that. If all this is to be believed, the $250 device has a 7-inch widescreen, S-Video out, built-in rechargeable battery, dual audio outputs, and can charge your iPod while you have the unit plugged into its own AC adapter. It seems to be available for order now, and we'd love to be proved wrong, but for now we're thinking a bit of wait-and-see might be in order.

Nokia has announced the launch of a new online retail distribution channel for N-Gage games and content, enabling consumers to access a broad catalogue of titles which can be securely purchased, saved to a memory card and installed on various compatible devices.
The new service offers a selection of popular titles for the N-Gage gaming platform, with prices ranging from EURO 19.99-29.99. Games are downloaded directly to the user's PC, and can then be transferred to a memory card and easily installed on either the N-Gage game deck or a compatible Nokia S60 or N series mobile device.
Jukka Hosio, Nokia's director of multimedia global sales, commented: "As we move forward with our next generation of mobile gaming, we continue to offer N-Gage owners easy ways to get games. By making these games available for download over the internet, we’re making it easier for N-Gage owners to find and purchase new games."
The N-Gage platform - specifically the game deck which originally launched in 2002 - has a rather chequered history, failing to inspire consumers and spectacularly missing sales targets set by Nokia, shifting just a third of the six million units projected for the three year period from launch.
Nokia says it will continue to invest heavily in the platform, pushing the focus away from a single device and ensuring that N-Gage software titles - many of which have received a positive critical reception and secured various industry awards and accolades - can be enjoyed on a range of multimedia devices and advanced mobile phone handsets.

The Aquatune waterproof case is a great addition to any summer gadget collection. The case includes 3 watt, 2 channel output speakers that are powered by replaceable batteries. The case, which is constructed of high quality polycarbonate material, will float in the pool or hot tub, protect your iPod and provide some block rockin’ beats for everyone to enjoy. The strong, protective cases will also withstand falls—you know, in case you mistakenly throw it in the empty pool sometime in the winter. Unfortunately, it is only available in Japan at the moment for $130, but this dock is a great idea and one of the powerhouse U.S. iPod accessory makers should really jump on this idea.

As yet another sign that online distribution has hit the big time, CBS adds its big name properties to iTunes. The three CSIs, Survivor and NCIS join Numb3rs on Apple’s iTunes service. Prices are $1.99 and the only shows available are from the 2005-2006 season.
We think the upcoming 2006-2007 season could be the year where online TV finally really takes off. We predict almost all the top rated shows being moved to either iTunes or some proprietary distribution so viewers can catch up on episodes they’ve missed. ABC’s done it already with their own free online streaming, and where one network goes, the other networks will surely follow.

Critical Posted this news:
Hi,
One of the things I've been messing around with using sweetlilmre's SDL port is Chui's mame4all port of Franxis' excellent MAME GP2X. So it's kind of ready to release to people (although sound is broken in exactly the same way as on uae4all)... I said I'd leave it for Otaku, but he's got a lot of stuff to do, and there didn't seem much point not releasing it since I think it's ready for prime-time.
If you like this, please donate to either Franxis or Chui via their paypal buttons, as I think they deserve your support.
The readme.txt for the Gizmondo release is included below.
The distribution zip is attached.
mame4all gizmondo 0.1.0
-----------------------
This is a Gizmondo port of Chui's MAME4ALL port of Franxis' MAME GP2X
port which is a port of MAME 0.34 by Nicola Salmoria. The MAME
license is at the end of the readme.txt document included with this release.
This port is maintained by critical (criticalhippo@gmail.com).
This release has broken sound.
This port uses the SDL libraries ported to the Gizmondo by sweetlilmre.
Installation
------------
The roms directory should be placed on your SD card like this:
SD Card Root
!
!--- mame4all
!
!----- roms
If using firefly's launcher, it's best to put mame4all.exe and the supplied dlls
into the mame4all directory, otherwise you could try putting them in the root of your SD card,
but I haven't tested that and it might not work.
Put your MAME 0.34 roms (zipped, as for any other MAME) in the mame4all\roms directory.
Controls
--------
At the main menu, use up and down to select a game, then PLAY to move to the options screen.
Press HOME to exit MAME at this point.
At the options screen, press PLAY to PLAY the game.
Whilst playing, return to the menu by pressing HOME.
Whilst playing, press * to add coins.
Whilst playing, press STOP to start the game.
Whilst playing, PLAY is button A, FFWD is button B.
Issues
------
Sound is broken.
Buttons aren't optimal yet.
Release history
---------------
20060609 - version 0.1.0 Initial release for Gizmondo from mame4all alpha 1 source.
The rest
--------
The original code I ported it from is available here:

Vilmos has released a new version of MAME the arcade emulator for the Tapwave Zodiac, heres whats new:
- Reduced memory usage. The loader can be in ram or SD card. The modules MUST be on SD card.
- Fixed Joust.
- Started to update loader. I haven't finished that yet, but you can enjoy the changes so far.
- Note: Program startup and Searching for ROMS will now just blank the screen for a bit. That's normal and for searching it can feel like a long time, just let it go.

The Golden State has always been fairly legislation-happy when it comes to keeping things green, and now they're trying to "Keep California Beautiful" with a new program to require cellphone recycling. Californians have been restricted from throwing phones into the trash since February 8, 2006, but as of July 1 all cellphone retailers in California will be required to establish a collection and recycling program. Recycling will be free, but if even that is too much of a hassle, you can visit the KCB website to get a postage paid box for sending your old phone to a happy resting place from the comfort of your own home. KCB will also provide postage-paid collection boxes to businesses for collecting from employees and customers, so the program shouldn't cause much of an inconvenience. Unless, of course, you wanted to mix a bit of arsenic and beryllium into your water supply.

As followup to that audio-only Alpine KCA-420i iPod interface from oh, about 2 years ago, it looks like Alpine has been quietly pumping out an iPod video capable KCE-415i unit in Europe for the last month. Yet a North American KCA-415i version is, at best, stil only on display on the trade show circuit. The E-variety 415i retails for about $100 and allows you to play/pause, skip, fast-forward/rewind the main 5G iPod directly from your Alipine MultiMedia station or overhead monitor with additional controls available from the Alpine head unit, remote control, or iPod itself. The interface is seen by your Alpine system as an external DVD source and not only charges your iPod's battery, but allows the iPod to be switched on/off via your car's ignition system. The unit provides composite or S-Video outs and as you'd expect works with a wide-variety of Alpine monitors. So just kick-in the autosync on your iTunes season subscriptions and you'll never suffer the lack of fresh, child numbing content on those long-haul trips again.

Nokia is suing two Chinese phone manufacturers and a number of distributors for copying its designs. Nokia also issued a cease and desist request in an attempt to stop the sale and distribution of the phones immediately.
The lawsuit was accepted on 12 June, and names manufacturers Shenzhen Telsda Mobile and Song Xun Da Zhong Ke Electronic, and distributors Beijing Tongwanbao, Beijing Xin Tongwanbao and An Wai Avenue.
Nokia says the manufacturers copied the industrial design of its art deco style 7260 phone.
After a sticky start - the Chinese authorities encouraged home grown phone manufacturers - Nokia now leads the Chinese market with 28 per cent market share. That's a little lower than Nokia's share of the global market, and considerably lower than its share of the Asian market, where it's dominated in recent years.

The Gizmondo has you know has failed as a Console but the Homebrew and emulation scene is coming along amazing and today Zodttd has released the worlds first Playstation Emulator for the Gizmondo:
Heres the release info:
Hi,
As you may or may not know, I'm a lead developer for the psx4all project. I was donated a Gizmondo by the kind people at the Spanish Gizmondo site where I will have an official release hopefully. Hopefully, because psx4giz is even slower than psx4gp2x. Meaning every game I tested is pretty slow (Buster Bros Collection only gets 31 FPS).
To install:
- Unzip the folder to the root directory of your SD card. I say use the root directory, since I'm assuming you're using a file selector of some sort.
- Copy over scph1001.bin to the root directory of the SD card. scph1001.bin (bios) has to be in the same directory as psx4all.exe.
- Copy the supported ISO formats of psx games to the psxgames folder.
The supported ISO formats are .BIN (raw), .ISO, .IMG, .Z (PocketISO 2.0 compressed BIN files).
- Run psx4all.exe.
Special Controls:
START = Giz's SOUND button.
SELECT = Giz's BRIGHTNESS button.
IN-GAME MENU = Giz's SOUND and BRIGTNESS button.
Things that don't currently work:
I didn't map a control option for L2 and R2 triggers for the Giz. If I get this emulator up to speed I will be sure to add this quick patch in the next release.
Time to continue Final Fantasy Tactics save state on the Giz.
